Lest we forget. October 12, 2012 was a date that changed Bali forever and will be remembered by so many people affected by the two blasts that night at the original Paddy’s and Sari Club in the centre of Kuta that fateful Saturday evening. Two hundred and two innocent people from many countries around the globe including Indonesia, lost their lives while simply enjoying a night out on the town, and the tragedy has touched thousands of people’s lives in Bali and from all over the world for years since. I had just arrived in Jakarta from Bali that evening when I received a call on my mobile from downtown Kuta which informed that there had been a bomb in the centre of town minutes before. At first I was wondering what kind of bomb it could be; a gas bottle explosion, a bomb like the earlier Christmas bombings, or what exactly. Over the crackling line it didn’t sound too good. There was a new shop grand opening that night not far from and opposite Sari Club and my then girlfriend (and sales person) and one of our beat writers, dear Eva, had just arrived five minutes before. Lucky for them they found a parking spot on the road just before the Sandpiper shop or they would have been right in the firing line parking at the Panin Bank right in front of Sari Club. Lucky I was in Jakarta too or I would have been parking there at that time as well. It was supposed to have been a normal Saturday night out but what happened next changed our lives and Bali forever. According to them there was a humming sound first, then a blinding flash, and the glass windows of the shop front and the ceiling came crashing in. The power went off and flames were engulfing the street. There was mayhem everywhere with people running in all directions. “I just remember the happy smiling, young people out the front of Sari Club when we were parking the car,” Silvia told me when I arrived back the next day. Everybody in town was in a state of shock for days and weeks. Kuta was like a ghost town. Someone had tried to place a sinister advert in The Beat in the edition released before that night, which we vetoed thankfully, but from the next day we became involved in the investigation with high-ranking officials and being kept in a safehouse with all witnesses of the event by the Indonesian Intel for about four nights after the bomb. That led on to weeks of intrigue and little conclusion. It was much like a John Le Carre novel and maybe one day it will be part of my own novel, but for now that’s just another story and definitely weird days in a weird place. Everybody who was here at that time was affected by that tragic night and there are many stories to be told. But that was now ten years ago and we’ve all moved on. A new Bali was built from that night—it had lost its innocence in a dramatic way and the carefree days of ‘before the bomb’ have long gone. I think that night we all discovered that Bali, while appearing to be removed from the rest of the world’s problems, was actually on the front line where East meets West. It was such a grave lesson to learn and now we know how tenuous that line is. May those many lives lost on that terrible night rest in peace.

MxPx boshe | sunday 14 oct
Roots
The band formed in Siverdale, Washington in 1992 and was a high school band influenced by Southern California skate punk calling themselves Magnified Plaid. The name was too long to fit on their posters so they abbreviated it to M.P. Due to one of the band member’s habit of writing a period as tiny “x”’s, the posters looked like they said “MxPx” and the name stuck. Their current line-up consists of Mike Hererra, Yuri Riley and Andy Husted who was eventually replaced by Tom Wisniewski. They were signed to Tooth & Nail Records after playing for the label at Herera’s parent’s backyard and released their first major album, Pokinatcha while still in high school and released two more albums with the label.
Sound
Pop punk, skate punk.
Where you might have heard of them
www.beatmag.com
The band really got big when they signed a major distribution deal with A&M Records in 1997 and moved from a hardcore punk sound to a slightly more pop punk style. They released three albums from 1997 to 2004, Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo in 1998, The Ever Passing Moment in 2000, and Before Everything & After in 2003. The band then signed with SideOneDummy in 2005 and released Panic in 2005 before resigning with Tooth & Nail in 2007. They released a Christmas album entitled Punk Rawk Christmas in 2009 and toured Japan and Southeast Asia (including a stop in Bandung) that same year. Their newest album, Plan Within Plans was released last April.
Why see them
If you’re into the skate punk scene, you’d know these guys are legends that can make the kookiest of squares head bang until their cerebellum hemorrhages. Catch them at Boshe and don’t be a wuss, enter the mosh pit.

Larkin shared stages with the likes of Oscar Patterson, George Sharinn, Herby Hancock, Ester Phillips and Carmen McCray.

Roots
Stan Kolev was bornin on August 31, 1971 in the city of Sofia, Bulgaria. He moved from Eastern Europe to the sunny shores of Miami in 1991 and started his career in the world of hip clubs, fast beats and even faster women in 1996. It wasn’t until 2003 when things really started to take off for Kolev, he released a track called “De Moma De” under the Casa Flavor pseudonym. The track eventually made its way up to the top spot on the UK Top 40 Dance Chart.
Sound
House and progressive
Where you might have heard of him
www.beatmag.com
Mr. Kolev has had two number one hits including “Breakout” on Baroque Records which reached the number one spot on the Tech House chart and his remix of Joeski’s “Calibre Electro” which reached the same place on the Deep House chart. No DJ’s resume would be complete without being hailed by a few top DJs and Kolev’s name has been on the lips of Paul Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo, Chus & David Pen,and David Morales. No big deal. He’s appears on labels such as: Global Underground Unreleased Digital, Baroque, Plastic Fantastic, Outta Limits, Dutchie, Ready Mix, Rise and has done remixes for Ministry of Sound, Unreleased Digital, Soma, Outta Limits, Atlantic, Dutchie, Ready Mix… phew, that’s a mouthful. He’s released two albums, Emotional Content and Grace Light.

posso woo bar | sunday 21 oct
Roots
Childhood friends Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini are DJs and designers with the “I Can” attitude that prompted them to come up with the name Posso for their ventures. Hailing from Sonoma, California, Pels was trained in classical piano for ten years since she was seven while young Giovacchini was into singing and had her poems published at 19. They admit to have been major fans of Led Zeppelin and Chicago while growing up.
Sound
Disco, tech house, funk
Where you might have heard them
The duo is as much a team of designers as they are DJs as Posso is a vehicle for them to bridge art, fashion, and music. In the process Pels and Giovacchini has performed as DJs at international festivals and events including Hard Festival’s Holy Ship Cruise, Orange County’s Pacific Festival, CMJ Music Festival, Hellow Music Festival, and summer Sonic Music Festival . Pels and Giovacchini also singing and DJing alongside the likes of Calvin Harris, Fred Falke, Treasure Fingers, Zedd, Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Chromeo, Yelle, Drop The Lime, Juan Maclean, Aeroplane, and Classixx.
www.beatmag.com
Why see them
Posso admit that their style of music is piano house, blues, and electronic music with passion. That statement alone could of won us over. They played at Cocoon last year and we had only great things to say about their unique sound and thumping beats.

Vicky Shu district | friDAY 26 oct
Roots
Vicky Veranita Yudhasoka, or Vicky Shu to her fans, isn’t just another good looking broad in the music industry. In truly stereotypical Asian form, her parents made her take classical piano lessons in third grade which contributed to her growing interest in music. Non stereotypically, she also learned to play the guitar and drums along the way. Shu became passionate about music after watching The Wizard of Oz. To this day “Somewhere over the Rainbow” is still her favorite song. In college Vicky Shu sang back up vocals for a number of top singers before eventually going out on her own.
Sound Pop
Where you might have heard her
Before getting serious with her singing career Shu tried everything that came her way. She was a finalist in 2007 Miss Indonesia pageant. After completing her studies, Shu started her own high end shoe brand Syu Shu which enjoyed success. Later on Shu had even wider exposure when she played Cleopatra in a TV show called Mahakarya. Yet amidst her tight schedule, Shu has stuck with her true love, music. In 2011 Vicky Shu launched her debut album Drink Me after spending a year in the recording studio. It immediately received a lot of air time throughout the country. Shu is now busy touring the country to promote Drink Me while keeping up with her growing online shoe business.
www.beatmag.com
Why see her
In just a short period of time after the release of her album, Shu the singer had shot to the top. During her promo tour, more fans are getting to see the beautiful face behind the Shus.

ummer at Potato Head is over. It was good while it lasted. Foster the People and Mssl Cmmnd joined Fatboy Slim, Justice, and Kid Cudi in the Potato Head summer class of 2012 and like their superstar predecessors, they did not disappoint. The crowd was huge, people partied (hard), fireworks burnt through the skies and it was another epic night at that coliseum of shutters. Foster the People played a perfect set, those guys are just about as good of performers as anything we’ve seen and their catchy tracks most definitely resonated with the crowd. M
aster violin player German Dmitriev got JP’s Warung Club down with his 3-piece ensemble that included drums and electronic bass in a thrilling gothic-infused show. His black metal influence was palpable in most of the songs, and made them sound like battle anthems of the Vikings in an ice-cold Nordic islands. Dmitriev’s performance helped cool down the unbearably hot Bali nights of late.

Pena came to the island and drove punters in Mint into a sort of dancing frenzy with his beats. As usual, the excellent DJs Mamsa and Wisdy fluffed up the crowd before the headliner took to the stage. Pena immediately took it up a few notches when he hit the decks. The party never let up until the show came to a close at 3am.

It was like a place with two distinct worlds in a single location. Those who weren’t equipped with headphones are left in an eerie silence amidst a throng of partyheads who were dancing frenetically. But for those who had their headphones on the party was complete raging in their headphones until 2am.

There should’ve been, at minimum, three bands to explode from Bali: Superman Is Dead, Navicula and Kaimsasikun. The last one had sophisticated skills, a cool-and-controlled performance style, and their songs are even ‘poppier’ sounding than the other two bands (meaning it would be easier to penetrate the Indonesian market). They even have the looks. Ian Stevenson, the frontman, is without doubt one of the greatest young musicians that Bali ever produced. He shares what went wrong with his almost-famous group and a bit about his personal life in the post-Kaimsasikun era.
Homegrown & Well Known:
IAN STEVENSON www.beatmag.com
Interview By Rudolf Dethu
I loved your band so much. I think they were one of a very few excellent bands from Bali, who could’ve gone massive nationally. But things seemed to not work out as planned. What happened? When Kaimsasikun was formed in 1999, we basically started out as just friends who liked to get together, learn our favourite songs, and play in the rehearsal studio. Eventually, we decided to start writing originals, and apparently a producer in Jakarta became interested in our music and offered us a contract. Very cliché, but it was really that simple. It all started out as something that we just did for fun. Our first contract was with Pro Sound records, for only one year. Then my mother passed away, and I had to go home to Bali. The other guys followed
shortly after. We were all back together in Bali, and we were compelled to keep making music. So a friend offered to help us make an EP album, which was later released independently, titled Solas. Loss of hope, is that the reason why Kaimsasikun ended up disbanding? Kaimsasikun didn’t lose hope, ever. The reason we disbanded was due to the difference of frequencies amongst the members of the band. That lack of spirit and energy amongst us is probably what made us decide to call it quits, and Kaimsasikun was left on hold for two years or so. But even though we broke up as a band, we still remained friends and remained in contact.
around 10 songs. All the songs have different styles. And that is the concept of Project 11, it is just a place for us to pour out our own ideas. If one day we compile the songs onto an album we would have to re-arrange the music to match our band’s style, so we could play live as Kaimsasikun. I think more people need to see Kaimsasikun playing live. You guys are brilliant on stage; skillful, tight—as tight as Navicula, plus performing gives more solid power to your original songs. We have had plans to gig again. But they always seem to get postponed. Everyone is still living in different areas and even countries. One of us is in Malaysia, a few of us are in Jakarta, and I live mostly in Bali. Even so, I have still managed to play a few gigs by myself. I also made a project not too long ago called Dialog Dini Hari. And I am also sometimes called to get up on stage to sing Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” with Navicula. Hahaha. But it’s been a while since I have actually performed a proper show. Almost two years probably! Let’s get personal, name three of your all-time favourite albums and why. OK Computer by Radiohead. This album is brilliant. The production is genius. From music arrangement, the mood that each songs creates, the notation/melodies and lyrics. It’s perfect! In Utero by Nirvana. Almost anyone who grew up and lived through the 90s probably knows this album. To me this is the best album from Nirvana. Around the Fur by Deftones. This is one of my favourite Deftones albums. I’ve been listening to this album since high school, I guess it’s just stuck with me ever since. Any last nagging words? Don’t ask what music has given to you, but ask what you have given to music!
www.beatmag.com
We moved on, I started producing, Sanny and Pandu were also producing, Mark did late night gigs as a drummer at a local cafe. But we knew deep inside that we really missed being together and working as a band, so in November 2011 me and Sanny hung out, and had this urge to call up the other guys. We decided to get together and make some music which we could release for free over the internet. And we did. Project 11 was born, we decided on this name because on every 11th of every month each of us (or sometimes all of us together) upload our new music. We don’t know where this project will go, but to me this project is a place where I can put my musical inspirations, and I am pretty sure the others think the same way. Yeah, we’ll see what the future brings. You built a little studio at your house. Was that just about killing time after Kaimsasikun broke up? During the time after Kaimsasikun had broken up, I needed to do something for myself. So with the money I had at the time, I built a home recording studio and bought recording equipment, even though I had zero knowledge about audio engineering. So, I took a short course over the internet, learned the basics and began experimenting on my own in my studio. And before you know it I became an audio recording geek, almost in no time at all! With all the knowledge I had, I started producing pop music for artists from Jakarta. For these projects I had to set aside my so called “idealism”, which was very hard at first, because it was just so different from what I normally do. But it was interesting, because I had to learn to listen to a song, or music, with very different perspective, and be open to other genres of music. Behind all that there’s a lesson for me, which is to enjoy limitless exploration of my musical abilities. Are you guys planning on making a new come back? Oh that time will come. Haha. I am sure Kaimsasikun will start gigging again but I’m just not sure when. For now me and the other guys are busy with work and our own activities. But Project 11 is home for us, and ever since the November 11, 2011 each of us have uploaded

Dine and Wine Bali
S.B. You are smiling there, you want to try that again? L.P. Yes, 30, ageless, single parent with two children, boy and girl, ages nine and 13. Parents come from Java, moved to Germany where I was born and raised until 30 years of age. S.B. Some background on that if you please. L.P. Basic, public school and high school, but my basic training actually was more in banking. Did you expect that? S.B. Not really, working where and what in that field? L.P. The stock exchange for many years. S.B. At what point did Bali come into the picture? L.P. That was in 1997, on a trip to visit my grand parents as I did for many years before as a teenager. S.B. Did you speak Indonesian then? L.P. At that time, no. Now I speak three languages. My first is German, then English and Bahasa Indonesia, and a bit of French taught in school. When I came here I wanted to leave the banking business sector and start a consulting service in hospitality and event management. I started in catering projects for Mercedes Racings as a project coordinating manager in Europe, on the events side of backstage work, P.R. and such. Seven different stages of musicians in the stadium, also the restaurants business, which was more of kick than behind the desk life. So eventually I became a consultant, with my own company called “Dine & Wine Bali”. My family moved back to Jakarta and so there I was before I came to Bali to pursue my endeavors. S.B. When was the actual Bali arrival? L.P. 2004 to 2008, it took a while of course. Bali is different from Jakarta with Bali being an international area and booming. I started my first job at J.P.’s club on Dhyana Pura in Seminyak
and followed up with villa’s, then on to Naughty Nuri’s Warung on Batubelig, and here I am at the Cubana Bar & Grill on Jalan Petitenget. S.B. So you can say you started with J.P.’s in the infant stage? L.P. Yes, learning the very colorful attributes of Bali. It’s interesting being one part Indonesian and having this unique color of culture with the knowledge of European society. It took me a few years to cope, but it’s good to be a bridging part of it. On one side, Bali being an international destination of wants and needs, on the other side, what we can provide as Indonesian Balinese Culture. Of course in the hotel and restaurant business is quite challenging. So I’m happy to bridge both parts to a happy conclusion. S.B. We’re now at Cubana Bar & Grill, what are your future plans and events? L.P. I think Cubana is a very interesting concept in itself, it has a beautiful outdoor garden for dining, a great bar layout, specializing in international cocktails, and Yos our mix master and part-owner does a great job. Mojito’s for instance are only mixed with sugarcane juice. Cubana can be Latin, jazz and we’re focusing on more live music by giving new platforms for all the musicians, and in that respect it can be world music, blues, reggae, it’s not only Cuban, it’s the whole genre of Latin American, Brazilian, Colombian, the all the Caribbean, all of which goes with the food and drinks. Events with special quests coming our way, which are on Tuesdays and Saturday’s, our regular house, Ito Jazz Trio, Thursdays are Salsa night and of course, Wild Women’s night on Wednesday’s, complimentary cocktails for the ladies. You better check that one out. Also for those who don’t know, Cubana is famous for their great selection of Cuban cigars. S.B. Your philosophy? L.P. Thoughts become things; keep believing in your dreams. S.B. I like that, signed sealed and delivered, been a pleasure. Chow mein, Salvador Bali.

hat’s the saying? You had to be there. Well it’s a lonely Tuesday night and basically nothing is happening, (WRONG). Cubana Bar & Grill on Jl. Petitinget is a pippin’ and bursting with energy, good vibes, as loose as a goose fun with every musician around as well, with Toby’s conga playing wild African beats, to jazz, with Rio’s trumpet Marina singing and the list goes on and then some. Been a long time since I was so surprised on a Tuesday night with an all around party atmosphere. Laughs all around, dancing, hugs and kisses with strangers. (Sounds like quite a night. Ed) Was I in Bali or maybe a transcendental trip to a Cuban state of mind? Who’s responsible for all this? Bali’sAngels
hile our thoughts are turned to the tragic events of ten years ago as we mark the anniversary of the Bali bombing with ceremonies and tributes, it is also a time to pay respect to those who acted generously and heroically at that time.
As the fires raged at the two neighbouring locations of the bombs, Sari Club and Paddy’s, many victims ignored their own injuries to help others escape the flames. With little thought for their own safety, they stayed to help those more injured, in some cases saving the unsaveable. Make shift areas were set up like the Bounty Hotel nearby, where the lobby was converted to help the injured until they could be taken to the hospital.
www.beatmag.com
Doctors and nurses on holiday or living here rushed to the scene and to Sanglah Hospital to help, saving countless victims and in some cases insisting that the critical injured be evacuated. Some of those deemed hopeless did survive their injuries and are alive today to tell their stories. Many did not. In the days that followed more volunteers, both foreign and local, arrived at the hospital; to hold the hands of victims, to soothe with words of comfort when no anaesthetics were available; to do the jobs no one wanted to do in the morgue and to help families searching for their loved ones, alive or dead.
The Australian Consul at the time took on a major role and helped families and victims from all over the world. Twenty four hours a day many of the volunteers worked to make whatever difference they could during that most painful time. They are the unsung heroes of the catastrophe caused by terrorists who came and wreaked carnage on our island. The memory of those that were lost, from all nations including our own, will be honoured on October 12, along with the survivors who, many of whom are making the trip back to Bali, some for the first time since. Besides the medals that were given to those who acted selflessly at that time, many of the volunteers, the people who gave comfort and in some cases saved lives, have slipped back into their lives unnoticed. It is up to each of us to honour them and the tireless work that they did. They are Bali’s angels and for anyone who lived here during that time and came into contact with them, we know the work they did and what it cost to be strong for others, to do jobs they would never consider in peaceful times. Those are the heroes of the Bali bombing and this is their time too. [Sarah D]

Some characters just love kicking ass and taking names, and two of our protagonists this issue do just that. And when it comes to romance, be gentle, just like a pianist playing a lovely melody to express his love. Such is the duality of man. Check www.21cineplex.com or your local DVD shop.
Taken 2 Action, Crime, Drama. Director: Olivier Megaton. Writers: Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen. Cast: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Luke Grimes. You don’t mess with a father’s love in doing whatever it takes to save his daughter from bad guys, especially when said father was a CIA field agent. The four-year-old prequel illustrated this. The sequel directed by renowned action-film director, Olivier Megaton, and the same writers, Luc Besson and Robert Kamen. The sequel puts in a revenge plot from the mobster from the first film. Expect the same gripping actions, brutal bashing, stabbing, shooting, but this time, everything takes place in Istanbul. So if you want to take revenge on an ex CIA agent, think twice, because even though he doesn’t know who you are, he will find you and he will kill you.
Dredd 3D Action, Sci-Fi. Director: Pete Travis. Writers: Alex Garland, Carlos Ezquerra, John Wagner. Cast: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Langley Kirkwood, Lena Headey. In 1995, fanboys rejoiced when legendary comic hero Judge Dredd hit cinemas, but they were sorely disappointed. Now in 2012, he’s back, to be the judge, jury and executioner... in 3D. Director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and writer Alex Garland (The Beach) team up in this reboot starring Karl Urban. This looks like a winning formula that fans can actually get behind. We all hope the ultra violence of the original comic will live on and if so you can bet it’ll be worth checking this movie out for sure.

So, for guys, do bring your girls for a lovely movie treat and don’t forget to put the hole in the popcorn.

estling within the lush mangrove forests of Benoa Harbour, you’ll find Warung Akame just on the left after you pass through the ticketing windows on the way towards Bali’s main port. Despite being just a few hundred metres off the Sanur bypass, the setting here is as tranquil and serene as can be, with various pavillions and private gazebos surrounding a calm natural inlet, giving a lakeside feeling. All around chirping birdsong coupled with the unique mangrove ecosystem provides the perfect backdrop to the extensive menu of Chinese Indonesian style seafood fare. But before you get stuck into the menu it’s also worth noting that the six- hectare lake is a haven for all sorts of fish, so if you fancy your luck at reeling in a barramundi, snapper, grouper or even a lobster you’re in luck – all fishing equipment is supplied on request from the guys at Akame. They’ll even show you the basics and help you to get started if you’re a novice angler – who knows, you may even end up catching your own supper! Open from 10am – 10pm every day, Warung Akame is the perfect spot for a chilled out lunch, but the best time to be around has to late afternoon when you can enjoy a different perspective of the famous

Undoubtedly their biggest draw, the fishing pond at Akame is hours of fun and if you’re a descent fisherman, possibly only minutes.Akame charges you for every fish you land, so if you’ve got the right tackle, you can rack up a few hundred thousand worth of fish in very few casts. The rental equipment are your typical spinning reels and live bait that consists of prawns, but this is far from ideal if you’re really into it and may see you casting many times before landing a fish. Our advice is to bring either a surface or bottom swimming lure and bait cast. The barramundi will aggressively attack and you’ll get at least a bite on every cast. This is when diners and other rookie fisherman will begin to eye and envy your superior angling skills. Commandeering one of the furthest gazebos from the main pavilion my friend and I go for a spot of healthy refreshment with a couple of homemade juices from the extensive beverage menu. The thirst quenching “Green Peace” (25k) is a sweet mix of healthy green veggies, and the new “Wakame” (25k) is composed chiefly of highly nourishing seaweed, which is, I’m reliably informed, excellent for a sore throat. A host of other signature juices and favourites sit alongside the usual list of beers, soft drinks, teas and coffees.

Not entirely sure ourselves, we ask one of the friendly wait staff who directs us to the newly introduced Soto Bibir Ikan Ginger Sauce (60k), quite the speciality apparently, and also the Chilli Crab Saus Cabe (35k/oz) with fried bread and veggies, which is massive, messy and amazing – everything good seafood should be. So next time you fancy somewhere a little different and off the beaten track, get on down to Warung Akame for a seafood treat that is hard to beat. Dan Ashcroft

Mumford & Sons
Babel
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
T
hree years on from the runaway success of Mumford & Sons’ debut hoedown Sigh no More and it seems that the old mantra: ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is the blueprint for new LP, Babel from the West London nu-folkies.
While no one expected them to release an experimental dubstep album or a collection of Dolly Parton covers, it would have been nice to see something more than what essentially is “Sigh no More Part 2” – their trademark roots-rocking, technology-spurning sound now responsible for having musically painted themselves into a corner. On a more positive note, there’s no doubting that as role models for tweeny bopper music fans, their hearts are in the right place, and in a climate full of tabloid headlines of music stars behaving badly, it’s refreshing to see a group of guys who look like they work in a family-owned village hardware store circa 1962. Delivered in frontman Marcus Mumford’s moody vocal style, the title track and album opener “Babel” brims with energy, and “Broken Crown” brings lively desperation to the proceedings with more foot-stomping grit and racy use of the f-word. “For Those Below” is a lovely little Simon & Garfunkel esque busker’s ditty that preceeds a cover of the aforementioned pair’s 60’s classic “The Boxer”, and closers “Below My Feet” and “Not With Haste” touch on motifs of dreams and freedom. In comparison, the expletive-laced anthem “Little Lion Man” and the catchy “Thistle and Weeds” were tracks that gave them more of a sense of urgency and passion, which is sadly lacking on Babel – much of the biblical lyrics and finger pickin’ stings ringing inexplicably hollow. Perhaps it’s the formulaic quiet/loud/quiet/loud dynamic of most of the tunes, but the standout tracks are pretty few and far between. That said, none of this is likely to bother die-hard M&S fans or next year’s summer festival goers who will lap up their rustic pop like cider at a harvest festival. Dan Ashcroft

ip Curl’s premiere all girls fun day out “Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day” took place over last weekend the 29th of September on the beautiful white sand beach of Kata Beach in Phuket, Thailand in what locals described as perfect conditions. Over 80 girls from all over South East Asia including Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia joined local Thai girls in Rip Curls Global Learn to Surf program.

Before the weekend’s activities kicked off, Rip Curl Asia retail winners and numerous media from all over South East Asia spent a whole day on board the beautiful 120-foot sailing yacht ‘Infinity’. On a 5-hour journey sailing through the Gulf of Thailand, passing through some of the region’s most well-known and spectacular Islands, the on board entertainment was ripe with pounding beats and an all day top deck dance party, before reaching land at one of Thailand most prestigious and beautiful resorts, “Sri Panwa” located at Cape Panwa on the South East tip of Phuket. The guests were treated to an awe-inspiring sunset and dinner perched on top of the resort roof top bar and restaurant, all hosted by the resorts gracious staff and CEO/Owner Mr Plawan. The following days activities kicked off at 10am with girls hitting the beach for a warm-up stretch and surf lessons from Rip Curl School of Surf’s very own Jonni Deaker. The waves were perfect for learning how to surf, so the girls were unstoppable and couldn’t get enough of
catching waves under the clear and sunny sky. Malaysian celebrity “Pear” was one of the girls that managed to stand up easily on her first try even though she had never even surfed before. Once the girls had mastered the waves, the fun continued with art classes, hula-hoop, tug of war battles and numerous attempts at setting a new world record with the “Wobaba” sling shot challenge; where girls teamed up and launched the amazing “Wobaba” water bouncing ball some 180 meters across the water. The event not only attracted wannabe surfer girls but also some of the biggest media from the region including presenters from Channel [V] Thailand, 8-Style Malaysia, Cosmo Girl, Juice Magazine, Cheeze, Sister and Seventeen, who were all given the opportunity to try the sport of surfing for the first time. Awards were given that evening for Best Wipe out, going to “Maya” of Indonesia’s Juice Magazine, as well as most stylish surfing going to “Pipo” of Thailand’s Cheeze Magazine. Following the awards the evening’s entertainment kicked of with reggae bands and fire dancing from the local beach boys and kids. The party continued on in true Thai style with girls crowding the dance floor and fireworks lighting up the skyline. A special thanks goes out to all the Kata beach crew and lifeguards, whom without their support and generosity this truly amazing event would not have been possible.

Jenny Ashby describes herself as a humanist artist who produces contemporary and conceptual work, responds to social, humanitarian and environmental issues. She strongly believes that as an artist, art can have an effective impact on others as a visual narrative to encourage contemplation and discussion. In 2010, Jenny moved to Bali after completing her masters at Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga, Australia to further her artistic boundaries and study contemporary Indonesian art. Over the last year, she has concentrated on putting together a body of work for a solo exhibition which responds to issues she has responded to through her artworks. This time, Jenny’s latest exhibition titled “Response” features selected images which come together in the form of a sensory sculptural installation, combining mixed media drawings, monotype prints, found objects, sculptural objects, sound and shadow projections.

In his latest exhibition titled “Cinta Bali: The Spirit of Oneness”, Ra’zal presents both universal energies in one spirit between man and woman, the sanctum of Godness in the oneness of spirit. W H O S E CANVA S
Not
too many local female painters can make a living in the world of fine art these days, and to reach widespread acclaim is much rarer. But this generality does not apply to Ni Nyoman Sani, one of the few Balinese female artists who has succeeded and achieved an international profile.
Sani’s beauty of paintings lies in the composition of her paintings, transverse linear, soft pastel colors, and brush strokes impression. Female figures are mostly placed on the outskirts of the canvas, the objects of posing women along with clothing choices, fused, and splitting the composition of the canvas.
Born in Sanur on August 10, 1975, Ni Nyoman Sani enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age. She also developed a passion for designing clothes in junior high school. Graduating from the STSI Art University, Sani creates sensual, uplifting images of the female figure, with vibrant colors. There is a sense of understanding and a sense of humor in her work.
You will discover more of Sani’s artworks in her latest solo exhibition titled “Enigma”, which is currently being held at Gaya Art Space. Through this exhibition, Ni Nyoman Sani is given an opportunity to present her ideas in measuring the future puzzle of historical art figures.

Taman Wana Seminyak
T
aman Wana Seminyak is the place to enjoy a quiet and pleasant vacation in an authentic rural Balinese atmosphere.
Location
Taman Wana is hidden in the back of Batu Belig, a growing tourist area in north of Seminyak. It boasts easy access to Batu Belig beach, Canggu Club, and the affluent Seminyak area with its eateries and clubs. Despite its close proximity to the livelier destinations, Taman Wana stands in seclusion at the end of a narrow road, in a fertile plantation-like property.
Look
The 5000 square meter property is what you’d imagine a tropical hideout would be like. It’s designed in traditional ethnic style with fashionable natural colors that perfectly blend in with bountiful of vegetations and coconut trees within the property.
www.beatmag.com
Atmosphere
The whole property was named Taman Wana, which means forest park, for a good reason. The name refers to the rich vegetations and big trees that dominate the complex. It even feels like there’s a huge umbrella of foliages above sheltering the whole property from the heat. Taman Wana’s claim about offering an authentic and natural Bali atmosphere is certainly not a misrepresentation.
Features
Taman Wana has five large villas: Lamu, Tioman, Silba, Sumba, and Moyo. Each villa provides a mid-size garden swimming pool and all the modern conveniences that will make for a pleasant vacation. A personal chef is available to prepare international and traditional Balinese cuisines at the privacy of your own villa. Guests will also receive complimentary membership at Canggu club during their stay.
