If you haven’t noticed, getting to the airport from Seminyak, or from anywhere from around town for that matter, is now a total nightmare just about any time of the day. This morning I took off to drop a friend at the airport with plenty of time to spare. It was a normal day, low season, and no school holidays to think about. We hit the first traffic jam on Sunset; cars packed in for a kilometre before the Nakula lights. I tried to go the back way thru Imon Bonjol and Tuban, but that was totally collapsed, then I turned around and tried through the centre of Kuta and it was total gridlock. Phew, too late. My friend had to buy a new ticket to Jakarta at an inflated price and it was a total mess from start to finish. And let’s not talk about trying to find a parking spot at the airport. The airlines must be laughing all the way to the bank with this situation. How many people are missing flights nowadays and having to buy tickets again? The mind boggles. And who is to blame? Maybe it’s me not allowing three hours to make the normal 20 minute journey. Maybe it’s the government and their inability to create a normal working field for us to enjoy life. Maybe it’s all the stars lining up in the wrong trajectory causing no end of grief. Who can say? But one thing for sure, and what we have to live with for the moment, is that a three hour journey to our beloved international airport is now the norm. Bring on the underpass ASAP. So this week we have Halloween arriving in all its glory, and it looks like we have the longest Halloween on record this year. It’s going for a whole week at many different venues around town so get your costumes on and make sure you keep them clean ‘cause you gonna need them more than once if you are up for it. All the information inside in the Main Stage section.

Going into its second year Boshe VVIP Club pushes further forward by installing the biggest kinetic 3D LED lighting system in Indonesia which consists of 210 square meters of LED tubes of different sizes on the ceiling and 30 square meters of LED screen, combined with a total of 20 Clay Paky Sharpy moving beams. The illuminations are controlled and moved with Madrix software from Germany that completely synchronizes the lights with every note in the music without any delay. The addition makes Boshe one of only three venues in the world that employ Madrix technology for their lighting system.

Bali reefs to receive government funds The Bali Government has allocated funds amounting to Rp. 250 million to support the rehabilitation of coral reefs in key coastal areas around the island in 2012. Villages that will receive funds include; Tejakula village in Buleleng, Melaya in Jembrana, Tanjung Benoa in Badung, Tulamben in Karangasem, and Toya Pakeh, Nusa Penida in Klungkung. Each will receive an equal share of Rp. 50 million. The government said that the money is to be directly used by these coastal communities to improve the sustainability of coral reefs.

Bali to host

U17 World Football Championships? Bali hopes to be able to host the Under 17 Football World Championship in 2017, but first needs to build a stadium with a capacity for 40,000 spectators. “This is a good opportunity for Bali to host the U17 Soccer World Championship,” stated the Bali Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) I Gusti Gede Putra Wirasana. According to him, if the island managed to become a World Championship venue, it would attract many international football fans. If the government approves construction of the stadium, the necessary accommodation in Bali for the athletes and the fans is already sufficient,” added Wirasana.

Government-owned airline PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines will launch scheduled seaplane services in order to access remote areas where runway infrastructure does not exist. The company is in talks with German aircraft maker, Dornier, to purchase 20 amphibious aircraft in a contract worth approximately $120 million US dollars. The Indonesian government plans to finance the construction of 15 new airports in 2013, but relies on billions in private funds for infrastructure. Progress in attracting financing is much slower, making Merpati’s plan in acquiring seaplanes worthwhile.

Chantelle Delaney hard rock hotel| friday 26 oct & monday 29 oct

Roots

Picking up the guitar and beginning to perform on stage at the age of six, Chantelle was practically destined to become a musician. At the age of 12, she toured with Australian super star Slim Dusty who was impressed with her talent and had a few encouraging words to young Delaney. Delaney then continued her musical training by enrolling at the prestigious Trinity College at London Academy.

Sound

Pop, country

Where you might have heard of her

www.beatmag.com

Chantelle Delaney always wants to spread her love of music and the joy that music brings to others to wider audience. She appeared in ABC hit documentary “Doesn’t Everyone Want a Golden Guitar” at the age of 10 and later in her teens took part in a team that taught and promoted music to children. At such a young age her contribution to the Australian music industry has awarded her a medal of honor from the Order of Australia for Outstanding Achievement in Music. Her talent brought Delaney on Olivia NewtonJohn’s the Great Walk to Beijing, a charity effort by the superstar that included Sir Cliff Richard, Joan Rivers and Danni Minogue as its participants. She soared even higher last year in a performance with legendary producer David Foster at a pre-Oscar show in LA, and like Slim Dusty a few years back, Foster was in awe of her ability.

Why see her

The talented young Australian musician has matured into an upcoming global star since relocating to the US. She works with top writers and producers in preparation for her debut album which is geared to be, in her own words, positive, warm, and spontaneous. So get a taste of Chantelle Delaney at her shows at Hard Rock Hotel Bali.

sayan S

ayan Gulino has a passion for being behind the decks and a very urban yet tropical vibe in his sets. The Beat has had the pleasure of interrogating him and we must admit that his responses were quite witty. Catch him playing the Halloween gig at Poco Loco and make sure you wear a costume.

poco loco | wednesDAY 31 OCT

www.beatmag.com

Q

A

1. Hello Mr. Gulino, let’s get started with some very typical questions. Where are you from? What are you all about?

Multicultural musical enthusiast, environmental activist, business minded yet creatively crazy, misplaced but never displaced, friendly sarcastic abstract human being that looks at the upside of down and never the downside of up. I’m from America.

2. Suppose you were on a boat. On this boat was a dragon. The only thing that keeps the dragon from eating you is music. You have your laptop, what are your first three songs?

Puff the magic dragon? Noo. Songs that would slay away this dragon.. Shuffle from my five/four star ratings on ipod read: 1. Buena Vista Social Club – Candela; 2. Rick Ross – Hustlin’; 3. Spookier – Dusty Springfield After I defeat the dragon do I get to save some princess? It’s not like defeating a dragon is enough…

3. Hey, I ask the questions here. Look at your 25 most played playlist in itunes on your laptop, what is in position 3, 13, and 21? Don’t lie; we’ll know if you’re lying.

3. Hollie Cook – “That Very Night” 13. Miss Chang Ft Taiwan – “Chinese Man” 21. Back to the Future Mashup 5

4.You used to go by the Sayerr G-Funk moniker, please explain the story behind this.

When playing music, I’m no longer a son, a friend or a collogue, I’m an instrument to make people dance. Therefore I should be detached from my legal name and association. The “Sayerr” part was given to me by one of my close friends I like the ring to it... And the G funk... G is the first letter of my last name and Funk is for funky.. And funky is defined as (in a musical term): having or using a strong dance rhythm, in particular that of funk: “some excellent funky beats”.

6. What are your deep thoughts on Halloween?

Never understood the pumpkin as a fear factor.. Like the provocative female “scary” costumes, and the trick or treat thing happens on a regular basis when I get candy from a store that has no change.

7. You’re going to play at Poco Loco on the October 31, what kind of spooky beats you planning on putting on and what are you dressing up as?

Sticky with the theme, I will play music that affects emotional memory, a sound that registers as “scary”, ingrained since childhood, perhaps Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, some dark Disney sound clips and of course beats to make even Frankenstein look like a hip moving salsa beast…. My costume will be a surprise!

8. Look to the left of your computer screen. How would you use the first object you see to fight off Michael Jackson and his zombies from Thriller?

I was given a bottle of Lambanog distilled coconut wine, it looks potent and dangerous for all species... Dead or alive...

9. How do you feel about both US presidential candidates take on American exceptionalism in regard to hegemonic stability theory?

The main question we should ask; is the US still a hegemon? And more importantly can we discuss this whole binder thing… To end with a quote/lyric: If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood Who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters!)

h e r e n o w

What a tough question. Considering I have a billion dollars to spend freely without the need of any financial returns. I would hire Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet, Li, Ving Rhames, Ade Rai and Verne Toyer in charge of security. The PR girls would be the Victoria Secret angels. I will be in charge of this section as well as the music section. PSY (Gangnam Style master), Ricky Gervais, Mos Def, Tina Fey and Obama as the MC team. Pixar would be in charge of all graphics/visual effects. They will also consult the lighting aspects. People will be given special 3D glasses and see Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac and Aaliyah amongst the crowd. They are only there when the glasses are on a la hologram style. In charge of costume would be Prince and his runner/ assistant would be Lady Gaga (she will also be handing out flyers for future billion dollar concerts). Apple and Samsung will be in charge of customizing and creating the best speaker system that has ever existed. (I might be going over budget here). Shakira will recruit the dancers and train them accordingly. Everyone will get a free Michael Jackson glove as they enter to the most spectacular event ever. If people get tired, there will be legends from the reflexology world to massage the dancing feet. Also the mist fans will be spraying Evian water so people chill out. The event will start at 6pm and finish at 6pm, here are a few acts to consider: U2, Kanye West, Jay-Z & Nas, Red Hot Chili peppers, Fort Knox Five, All the Marley’s, Aloe Blacc, Cee-Lo, Mad Professor, Deadmau5, Tape Five, The Heptones, The Killers, Knife Party, Diplo… Not to mention supporting acts from the streets of Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Jamaica…

Omar Lye Fook woo bar | friday 2 nov Roots

Omar Christopher Lye-Fook was born in Canterbury on October 14, 1968. Lye-Fook’s early musical influence came from his father who played in a band and later founded Kongo Records. He was trained in trumpet, piano, percussion and was schooled in music at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and the Guildhall School of Music in London.

Sound

Neo soul, soul.

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of him

His first album was released by his father’s label, Kongo Records, titled There’s Nothing Like This in 1990. It broke through the UK Album Chart without much promotion and reached number 54. Upon reissuance by a new label There’s Nothing Like This shot to number 19 in the British charts. A year later Lye-Fook’s second album, Music was considered less successful than his previous attempt, still reaching number 37 in the UK. He started getting more recognition when he signed to RCA which saw him collaborating with celebrated musicians including Lamont Dozier of Motown fame and Stevie Wonder. Wonder invited Lye-Fook to LA to write music with him that resulted in For Pleasure in 1994. With more exposure, Omar Lye-Fook grew to the artist that influenced a later crop of soul and RnB musicians and collaborators like D’Angelo, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and India Arie. Earlier this year, after 21 years in music and six excellent albums, Omar Lye-Fook received an MBE for his services to British music.

Why see him

Lye-Fook is widely considered as the father of British neo soul. Such is his global stature. In case you need more convincing, listen to this, Stevie Wonder is a collaborator and fan of his and probably gave him the biggest complement by saying, “when I grow up I wanna be like Omar”.

green velvet pyramid | saturday 3 nov Roots

Growing up in Chicago and dreaming to become a doctor, Curtis Alan Jones didn’t get into music full time until he was working on his graduate degree in chemical engineering at UC Berkeley. Prior to that, music was a mere hobby that resulted from his tinkering with cheap keyboard, four tracks, and a drum machine he put together in college. He played saxophone at school and later, keyboard but never picked up a real interest in the instrument. He did however absorb the early sound of house music in the Windy City during the 80s. He was also influenced by his childhood passion in sci-fi movies, time travel TV shows, and video games. Somehow everything clicked and Jones found his true calling as singer and musician with the release of a 1991 EP called “Underground Goodies”.

Sound House

Where you might have heard of him

www.beatmag.com

Jones began his career with the Cajmere moniker in Underground Goodies EP and a year later he hit big with the song, “Coffee Pot (It’s Time for the Percolator)”. He climbed up the charts with his next effort “Brighter Days”, a collaborative work with singer Dajae, which reached number two on Billboard Hot Dance Music/ Club Play. Next came “Flash” in 1995 which was number one US dance hit that year. Jones’ first album, Constant Chaos, was released in 1999, around the time he adopted another moniker, Green Velvet. During the next decade Jones, as Green Velvet went back and forth from house to a more punkish sound in his 2001 Whatever, as reflected in his biggest single to date “La La Land” and back again to house in 2005’s Walk In Love.

Why see him

For a guy who began late in music, Jones, or Green Velvet as he is known nowadays, shows depth and versatility. Jones has become club and festival favorite in Europe with numerous relentless productions. Amidst the evolution, experimentation, and growing up, Jones remains a true ambassador of his hometown’s brand of house music.

Leah Mencel hu’u bar | friday 9 nov

Roots

Leah Mencel might be unique amongst DJs as she was almost completely unknown until her win in the 2011 “She Can DJ” competition. The Adelade DJ won a second time in 2012 and secured a global recording contract with EMI as a result of beating her opponents in the completion. Before these huge successes, she was your average Joe DJ vying to make it big playing five to seven sets a week.

Sound

A bit of everything with a slant towards dub, but also delving into house and tech.

Where you might have heard of her

Like any DJ worth their salt in motivating huge crowds to dance, she’s spun in all the major festivals Down Under including Parklife, Stereosonic, Summadayze, Big Day Out, Future Music Festival, and Planet Cream. She also will be featured in a weekly mix on 2DayFM Party People which attracts over 600,000 weekly listeners. She also has one of the best quotes we’ve heard in a long time: “I love music as much as Kanye loves Kanye.”

www.beatmag.com

Why see her

With her giant win, Mencel seems to be on the up and up and just might be one of those giant names in the business. This is your chance to see her at Hu’u now and tell your friends you got to see Leah Mencel before she was cool. If you’re into the mashup style of DJing with strong dubstep overtones, this is the party to attend.

Technasia mint | saturday 10 nov

Roots

Technasia started life as a DJ duo in 1996 and consisted of two men by the name of Charles Siegling and Amil Khan. The duo subsequently had an amicable split in 2010 when Khan decided to focus on his young family and Siegling took over the reins and transforming it into a one man show. Siegling, who is originally French, was raised on Depeche Mode, Jimi Hendrix, Legendary Pink Dots and Einstuerzende Neubauten. His father introduced him to the rave music scene and he matured with the Paris club sound He met Khan in Hong Kong where Technasia was born.

Sound

Techno

Where you might have heard of him

Technasia’s most well known anthems are “Force”, “Oxide” and “Evergreen”. They’ve released two albums as a duo, Future Mix and Popsoda, which some regard as modern classics. He was also instrumental in the careers of formerly unknown artists such as Joris Voorn, Renato Cohen, Steve Rachmad and young Catalan producer Dosem. As a solo artist, Technasia’s third LP, Central proved a hit with fans and he has played in just about every city that matters including dance music’s golden mecca, Ibiza.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

This guy can be considered to be a DJ god and requires three turntables to mix his set often including cutting and scratching. He might add some other unconventional additives during his sets including keyboards, percussion, acoustic instruments, and sometimes even his voice. Check out how fresh he is at Mint.

They all went even crazier when Miyavi closed the show with his latest single “Day 1”. Immediately after he completed the song the crowd let Miyavi know that they wanted more from him. The Japanese star was happy to oblige and launched an explosive guitar solo that served as a fitting closure to such a high energy show.

Then it was the popular Helga Sedli’s turn to get the crowd moving with its acoustic by request set. A speech by the head of Banjar Kuta officially closed the festivities before the night’s star performers, The Hydrant, sent everybody jumping and shouting rockabilly style.

As

a self confessed couch potato who rarely strays far from home unless circumstances deem it essential, I have been reminded yet again of how beautiful Bali is if you get out and see it.

and the rubbish, half an hour away and idyllic paradise can be found. In some areas of Bali where tourism is a world away, life hasn’t really changed that much and it is here that you find the Bali that early travellers fell in love with.

My most recent trip has taken me to the little known area around the surf beach of Keramas. Black as pitch sand and deep blue water wash on to the shore of quaint traditional villages. Local families take their sunset strolls and splash in the water. The views across the water to Nusa Penida are stunning.

Perhaps you won’t find pizza on every corner and the coffee probably won’t come with steamed milk but you can usually find a grilled chicken dish with some savoury rice, fresh fish cooked on the coals, cold Bintang is everywhere and the local coffee is rather exotic.

www.beatmag.com

The thing about Bali, even though it is quite small is that almost anywhere you go outside of the urbanized southern part you encounter the Bali you thought was lost. Mountains and rivers, rain forests and vibrant valleys, ancient temples and traditional villages are just some of the things you will see. Even the coastline changes from place to place, from busy surf beaches to quiet reef lined bays to stunning white sand swimming beaches with turquoise water, it has it all. While we sit in Seminyak or Legian, Canggu, Candidasa or any of the other populated centres and moan about the traffic and the crowds

The island is much more than a tourist destination, it is home to a thriving culture, some magnificent landscapes, quiet coastal towns and mountain towns where you may even need a blanket at night. There is so much to see and do that is often ignored that we often simply forget about. To see and experience Bali as it once was, you don’t have to go far but you will have to take your spirit of adventure, your sense of humour and possibly your own milk with you. More than just an island, Bali is an experience, and more than anything that is the reason so many people have been visiting for so long – it is out there, you simply have to go. [Sarah Dee]

So

here I am at the Cubana Bar & Grill checking out the Helga Fusion Band. I’ve seen and heard Helga playing and jamming with her violin on many occasions, sometimes I really enjoyed her and sometimes not, that is according to whom she was playing with, and so my curiosity got the better of me. Right off the bat I was impressed, Helga’s presence as a band leader was dominating, vivacious and commanding with a definite professional aura, then came the surprise, this gal can sing as well and with a sleek sexy tonality with the moves to match. No doubt about it, this is talent in the making, I had to interview her.

S.B. Begin the begin. H.S. Helga Sedli, 32 years old, born in Hungry, Budapest and single. S.B. You said that with a smile, ready for the marriage? H.S. Yeah, it’s coming. S.B. What kind of musical training did you have? H.S. I had a normal schooling, but it was parallel with musical training, meaning at the same time I went to school and throughout my schooling which was morning till afternoon then went to music school. I started that at the age of eight.

most of the groups I played with, now I have my own group where I can mix folk with jazz. Also with my background, I love to sing Hungarian folk music, but now I’m getting more open with jazz.

S.B. I presume you studied mainly classical? H.S. Yes, but after training I started to open my mind and eyes, and traveling and learning other styles. All my schoolmates went to symphony orchestras and stayed in that classical box, then I decided, it was not for me.

S.B. What brought you to Bali? H.S. Traveling and following and after graduation, I got confused. What to do? My whole life I studied music right up to the high level of university in Hungary, there’s not many positions or opportunities and not much money. Before that, I was a mathematical and music school teacher in high school, all my co-workers encouraged me to leave, telling me if I stayed you would be stuck, your talented and special, so there I was in Jakarta and my contract ran out. I met a Greek man who represented artists and he had an opening for me in Bali, what to do? I didn’t want to go back to Hungry and be in the same situation, so I came to Bali. After one year of playing around, I started to know the local musicians, they called me and we would play together, hence, I can now stand on my own two feet. I made a decision to be here and its working

S.B. At what point did you become a professional? H.S. I don’t know the answer to this, I just played. S.B Put it this way, when did you start making money with your music? H.S. That was here in Bali. S.B. That’s an eyebrow raiser! H.S. Actually my first paying job was in Jakarta at the hotel Mulia Seraya with a string quartet that was in 2009, four Hungarian girls playing in the lobby every day, classical music. S.B. How did that come about? H.S. The girls were already there, but one of the girls decided to go home, emails went around looking for a replacement and at that time I was stagnant and looking for something new, so I applied and got the job. S.B. Were your parents musically inclined? H.S. No, my mother was an elementary school teacher, she never studied music, but had a nice clear voice; my father is an artist/painter. No brother’s or sisters, I’m an only child, boo hoo. S.B. How about the traveling you mentioned? H.S. I was traveling with a school orchestra, doing concerts, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and many other places, then I joined with a professional voice choir that did chamber music. I did competitions with that as well and won first and second places, loved that, so yes, at 16 I was a professional singer S.B. Your singing is something very few people know about, nobody has heard you sing, and they’re in for a big surprise. H.S. Well for me, my voice is not fitting with

S.B. Now you have your own group, Helga Fusion, what’s that about? H.S. Also a new story which started a couple of months ago, I’m also playing with the Saharaja band, Rio approached me and I’m very happy with them, I saw them play two years ago before they stopped and I was thinking, how could I be in a band like that. S.B. So dreams come true? H.S. Yes. Dreams come true. S.B. Do you have future plans? H.S. I’m happy in Bali, I think I’m going to live here, that’s how I feel, and with the band, it’s like my baby. I’ve never done that before where I’m creating music, arranging and composing, of course with the boys and I want to do recordings hopefully this year. S.B. Well you’ve certainly got the credentials to do just that, long time coming. What’s your philosophy? H.S. Happiness, health and music, that’s everything. S.B. And for your would be fan club? H.S.I wish for them the same. S.B. Thanks Helga, for sure you’re going to do it to it. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

www.beatmag.com

S.B. What were your influences in music then? H.S. Well at that time the Polka, which is from Holland, a Hungarian style dance called the Czardas and Gypsy music. So a lot of my schoolmates were Gypsies.

087

f e a t u r e

S.B. So you’ve been playing violin for 24 years, do you play other instruments? H.S. I play basic piano, I’m also a vocalist and I sang Hungarian folk songs. In University I studied classical voice and won many competitions.

Interview By Rudolf Dethu

www.beatmag.com

Being passionate about the environment and doing something about it are two completely different things. Suarnatha embodies both aspects and is in the process of making an all-in-one spot for environmentalists and like-minded people. You have run Wisnu Foundation for decades and mainly focused on eco issues. But now, with Wisnu Open Space, it seems like you want to expand. Seems like a big development is underway? True. That’s how both friends and the general public perceive us. Mainly due to not really knowing what Wisnu Foundation is about, exactly. Wisnu has always been a non-governmental organization focused on managing community resources. One of the most solid programs we have run so far, yes, was eco related. I guess that’s why people think that we are all about ecology and environmental issues. But actually we also do other “eco” things in the context

of facilitating economic growth that is based on community cooperation: after evaluating community opinion. Something big is going to happen? Indeed. We will formally launch Wisnu Open Space very soon. We will have a coffee rendezvous, a community gallery, a public library, and a big organic garden, in one place. So Wisnu Open Space will be the new creative hub of Denpasar? You can say so. After years of meeting and talking with lots of different and interesting

people, including many who are smart, talented and relatively young—or young at heart, I came to the conclusion that it’s really time to build a place… well, more like a media to connect all the dots, a venue so all those inspiring people can interact, can communicate with each other. Where Wisnu Foundation has been located from the start, there is some empty space, so I just thought that rather than waiting for someone else to facilitate the media to connect all the dots, I should create it myself. That’s how Wisnu Open Space started: from thought to action.

www.beatmag.com

So far we have a few exciting components, already running, or just about ready to go. First is Kedai Kopi Kultur, a coffee hang out place already open, where you can drink our authentic, premium, local coffee produced by local farmers; and also learn about coffee—we hold weekly “Cupping is Believing” sessions where our coffee experts explain about a different coffee each time and you can also have a taste. Like a wine tasting session. Second is a community-based art gallery where we exhibit creative products from talented—mostly junior—artists (picked by our inhouse curator team). Third is a radio station named Radio Rebel Indonesia which operates as a community radio. We are presently in contact with local celebs-cum-activists, and socioenvironmental movers and shakers, sharing perspectives and planning RRI. Fourth is, out the back, we have a big block of land, where we’ll commence urban, organic farming, for the food supply for Kopi Kultur. We will also sell some of this produce at Kopi Kultur. Fifth is a public library where people can do serious stuff like doing research or relaxing stuff like reading books (while enjoying their coffee). Among all these entities, Wisnu Foundation remains as a backbone. Each entity will empower the others. I’m interested in this Radio Rebel Indonesia, interesting name... and the library. How will it differ from regular radio and what’s so special about the library? First I have to thank Jerinx form Superman is Dead for contributing the explosive RRI name. As I said, this radio is more like a community project. We are thinking of letting local celebscum-activists and socio-environmental movers and shakers produce their own radio programs (under supervision of our program director, of course). We will also play music that you rarely

hear on commercial radios. Hopefully on 12-1212 RRI will commence broadcasting. While with the library, the main principals of Wisnu Open Space can be found inside the library: books about coffee, urban farming, youth culture, rock rebellion, environmental revolution, responsible designs, whatever properly reflects the ideals of the Wisnu Open Space. To tell you the truth, we don’t have all the books yet but we are slowly compiling. Some friends also promised to donate some related books. I’ve seen a lot of these so-called “creative hubs”. I used to even run one myself. The problem is always the maintenance, how to remain sustainable (obviously, without counting on any government support, as you never can). What makes you so sure Wisnu Open Space will be glorious and last forever—or longer than attempts that preceded it? Even though I’m moving slow, I’m pretty sure about what I’m doing. We are planting strong grass roots foundations, a solid bond with the creative community, as they are our main constituents. They have their products (skills and creativity) and we facilitate them, we build a creative hub for them; as you may know, they don’t really have any other “playground” anymore. So we are offering a playground, offering a partnership, to work together, hand in hand, a mutually beneficial relationship. The other significant point here is, we also back up Wisnu Open Space with good, professional governance in order to shape a strong management team. For Wisnu Open Space, are you working with the local government at all? Don’t you think the involvement of the government would help you grow, make you stronger and sustainable? Not directly, not yet. But it’s already in our grand design to involve local government, other parts of the private sector, academics, journalists, the mass-media, NGOs, and for sure the community at large. Any last nagging words? It’s been almost 10 years since I first dreamt about this Wisnu Open Space concept and finally it’s happening. But I realize there’s still a very long way to go. Let’s just step up, right or left foot first, it doesn’t matter. I believe that good things come to those who wait.

Time travel, a hen’s night, and life after children.

By: @JohanJT

Boys night out? Take your crew to witness some thrilling sci-fi action involving lots of guns and a time machine. Girls wanna have fun? Do a bachelorette party with these four crazy women. Need serious quality time with your partner? Why not learn what family life means watching these three couples! Check out your local DVD store or www.21cineplex.com if you’re feeling lucky.

Looper Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Writer & Director: Rian Johnson. Cast: Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt. In Looper, critically-acclaimed writer-director Rian Johnson puts together time travel, assassination, and drama in one roller coaster ride of a movie. In 2072, time travel is illegal yet being used discreetly by organized crime to send their enemies 30 years back to be assassinated by a hired gun called a “Looper”. However, the new boss in the future decides to “close the loop”– sending back a time assassin to kill himself. When Joe is tasked with killing his future self, what he doesn’t know is that his future self is fighting to change history as well. Sit back, put on your thinking cap, and get ready to travel though time!

Bachelorette Comedy. Writer & Director: Leslye Headland. Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Adam Scott. This chick-flick debut from writer-director Leslye Headland is for girls (and boys) who just want to have fun laughing. The film is about the hilarious mishaps between four friends and a wedding dress on the night of a bachelorette party and the lead up to a wedding. Think the Hangover, but with a bunch of chicks instead and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the shenanigans in this flick.

Friends with Kids

www.beatmag.com

Drama, Comedy. Writer & Director: Jennifer Westfeldt. Cast: Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, John Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd. The tagline for this film is “Love. Happiness. Kids. Pick Two”, and for those of you who have entered family life, you might consider the statement to be very accurate. In fact, its a story about a close-knit circle of friends having their lives, romances and friendships changed after giving birth to offspring. Audiences and some critics praise it because it portrays modern family-life and friendships very closely. Think carefully about which two you want to bring along: friends, kids, or maybe just a lover.

T

he culinary diversity of Bali is a wonderful thing, with most cuisines from around the world represented in some way or another around town. However, while French, Italian and Japanese eateries are a dime a dozen, decent Middle Eastern places are preciously few and far between.

www.beatmag.com

Flying the flag for serious Lebanese cuisine, Legian’s Layali restaurant provides friendly service, hearty exotic food and sumptuous décor that resembles a desert caravanserai so convincing that I wouldn’t have been surprised to see T. E. Lawrence dining at the next table. The menu screams Arabian authenticity, and the native Lebanese chef ensures that if it’s a greasy doner you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place. Layali serves up the freshest and finest authentic Lebanese Mediterranean food this side of Beirut for lunch and dinner, with a selection of meze tasters sitting alongside both vegetarian and carnivorous mains – not to mention devilish desserts and traditional fruity beverage concoctions.

LAYALI Jl. LegianKaja #445 +62 361 889 0445

103

f o o d

White drapes throughout give way to rich red and gold furnishings, strewn with ornate cushions and oriental rugs that conjure up dreams of romantic Arabian nights. There are normal tables, but that’s no fun – much better to recline and dine at floor level around the low-slung tables surrounded by comfy cushions and adorned with elaborate hookahs – all the while Lebanese Arabic tunes subtly wailing out of the speakers. Stopping by Layali with a couple of workmates, the three of us get settled in around one of the lower tables and get stuck into the menu, eventually all agreeing that the shared Meze Platter (130k) is absolutely the way to go. The decision is not regretted, with everyone greedily tucking into the bowls of zesty hoummus, tabouleh and babaganous using the warm flat bread to scoop up the dips. I could quite easily graze on this kind of food all day, but it’s time for the main event, which comes in the form of a Lamb Biryani (65k) and the house special Assorted Grilled Skewer Platter (215k for three people/285k for four). The biryani is simply excellent - the fragrant rice, tender lamb chunks and minty yoghurt adding up to make a dish that is every bit the sum of its parts.

If you are looking for a taste of the Middle East then you won’t be disappointed with Layali pronounced La-ya-li, and put simply: An oasis of deliciousness right bang in the middle of Jalan Legian. Dan Ashcroft

www.beatmag.com

Meanwhile, the assorted skewer platter consists of four different kinds of kebab (shish tawook, lamb/beef kofta, and lamb shish) with a pile of thick cut chips and grilled veggies on the side. Coupled with the biryani it’s a feast that would easily feed 40 thieves, and we’re so full afterwards that the chef suggests firing up the hookah with a slab of mint flavoured tobacco to puff away on to help the banquet go down. A number of other flavours are available but the minty taste is clearly a winner, and with a fresh mouthpiece provided we spend the next hour puffing away on the sweet and exotic aroma.

David Byrne & St. Vincent

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

W

Love This Giant

hen brass-driven ska/punk music disappeared up its own trombone in the mid 90s, everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief and was able to get on with their lives again and agreed that things like saxophones have no relevant place in the world except perhaps in orchestras or attached to Bill Clinton’s face during a charity concert. So what the hell were erstwhile Talking Head David Byrne and art-pop vixen Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) thinking when they decided to make an album chiefly performed using instruments nicked from the local marching band? In fact how did they even end up deciding to collaborate together in the first place? The universe certainly works in mysterious ways, but out of such odd pairings, great things are bound to happen, and so is the case with Love This Giant. Hiring afrobeat ensemble Antibalas and funk legends The Dap Kings to blow life into the brass arrangements has also done them no harm. This is no smooth jazz though, so frenetic are the horns on tracks like “Ice Age” and “The One Who Broke Your Heart”, that it would appear Byrne and Clark have got the rest of the band hooked up by their ears to a lorry battery, evilly zapping them in time to the beat. Indeed, as “Lazarus” wheezes into life towards the end of the album, you can almost hear them collapsed in the corner, gasping for breath. Elsewhere, wonky, funky, sultry horns parp away to disco beats and sporadic guitars à la Prince, and that’s just the beginning of opener “Now”, which sounds not unlike a sax having a fight with a turntable. “Weekend in the Dust” and “I am an Ape” continue in a similar vein, the killer “I Should Watch TV” finds the now silver-haired Byrne at his groovy 80’s best, and Clark more than holds her own on tracks like the trip hoppy “Lightning”. Enormous fun at every turn, Love This Giant has to be one of the most surprisingly enjoyable albums this year. Dan Ashcroft

ack Freestone (AUS) took out the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali over Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau (HAW) in a battle of the in-form surfers of the event. With the swell dropping and unfavourable winds, the surfers were forced of unleash their aerial attacks in the two to three foot punchy surf at Keramas on Tuesday. Freestone who also won the ASP World Junior Title in 2010 joins current ASP WCT No.1 Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Pablo Paulino (BRA) in an elite club of three surfers to have claimed multiple men’s ASP World Junior Titles. This year’s ASP World Junior Champion was decided at a standalone event, the Oakley ASP World Junior Championship Bali as opposed to a series of events. Freestone is truly a deserving winner after battling through a stellar field of the world’s best junior surfers and an array of conditions ranging from shifty beachbreaks at Canggu, big Keramas tubes and windy, rampy Keramas on the Final day. Lau, the powerful Hawaiian surfer impressed all who watched throughout the event, but fell short in the last heat of the event. The Final was a chess match, going back and forth with the lead changing and the two surfers with similar powerful and progressive styles battling for the title.

www.beatmag.com

Andrew Doheny (USA) was elininated by Lau in Semifinal 1, finishing equal 3rd, one spot short of his runner-up finish at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships last year. Doheny was one of the most exciting surfers to watch for the duration of the event, using his unpredictable style to constantly blow onlookers away. Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) fell victim to a rampaging Freestone in Semifinal 2, finishing the heat with just 2.17 (out of a possible 20) to Freestone’s 19.53. Boukhiam was the last goofy-footed surfer remaining in the draw and he really struggled in the difficult conditions today. Freestone went on a frenzy in that heat, posting multiple scores in the excellent range, with Head Judge Glen Elliot describing the heat as - “one of the best displays of technical aerial surfing in

one heat in ASP history. Jack (freestone) landed two stalefish grabs, a slob grab and full rotation Kerrupt grab air-reverse. People will be talking about that heat for a long time.”

This is the alternating hot or cold therapy system that lets users select their preferred temperature, then maintains it for the duration of the treatment session. Unlike bulky gel-filled wraps that cannot be heated or cooled with precision and quickly deviate from their starting temperature, this system continuously circulates warm or cold water through a compression wrap (sold separately below) to deliver consistent, targeted relief. Ideal for soothing chronic conditions like arthritis and tendinitis and speeding recovery from injuries or surgery, the control unit adjusts the temperature from 40° F to 105° F with the turn of the dial. Maroon5

www.beatmag.com

Puncaknya, ketika satu hits berjudul ‘Move Like Jagger’ dimainkan, seolah menjadi klimaks konser tersebut. Fantastis! After the success of last year’s concert, Maroon 5, a Californian band consisting of Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, James Valentine, and Matt Flynn was back to rock Jakarta. Promoted by Java Musikindo, the band was scheduled to perform for two days and took place in a larger location, Istora Senayan Jakarta. Maroon 5 also brought a new band called The Cab which opened the concert. When Adam appeared on stage, the crowd basicly went nuts in the whole venue and all sang along to all their hits. When their song “Move like Jagger” was performed, the crowd frenzied like it was the only song left in a world without music.

David Guetta

S

etelah David Guetta menduduki posisi nomer satu dunia versi DJ Mag, ditambah dengan larisnya berbagai hitsnya, membuat publik ingin menyaksikan penampilannya.

Since David Guetta was placed in the number one position by DJ Mag last year everyone in the world wanted a piece of him. And Jakarta got to see David Guetta’s performance. He performed his signature style in front of thousands at Ancol Eco Park Jakarta. His house, mash ups, and electro music seemed to resonate through the slack jawed crowd of fans and ravers alike.
