LETTER FROM THE EDITOR N ew Year, new Magazine! I couldn't be more excited to share all the hard work our incredible team has done to create the NEW and improved Beauty Battalion magazine.

This past year has been full of wonderful memories as well as some hard, but much needed changes. The mission of The Beauty Battalion remains stronger than ever and with our newly refined team I am thrilled to welcome 2017! When envisioning this idea of The Beauty Battalion almost 5 years ago now, I was filled with such purpose and a burning desire to utilize the talents of our team on a much bigger and much more fulfilling endeavor. We are not just a team of professionals who specialize in creating impactful and beautiful photos. We LOVE what we do and are passionate about sharing our craft.

It's time for change. It's like Gandhi said, "BE the change that you wish to see in the world." Our team is ready! We are taking a new approach to Beauty & Fashion and we invite you all to be part of this movement. Refuse to conform to what society perceives as beauty. Embrace your uniqueness. Reveal your authentic self. Define your own beauty. #JoinTheRebellion

Our magazine features REAL people with REAL stories who empower and inspire us. We believe in spotlighting individuals who we look up to and respect. (NO Kardashians on our covers!) Our message is clear: WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL. I am grateful to my team and their incredible talents they altruistically share to make our True Beauty Award Winners feel like stars during their magazine cover shoot.

Professionals in the industry understand the efforts, work, and yes, even photoshop Thank you from the bottom of my heart, that it takes to create those perfectly polished cover photos. xoxo, But what about the target audiance for those distributed images? Do they see the work? Do they know it's all smoke and mirrors? How many of us are guilty of judging ourselves based on a false and totally fabricated photo being plastered in the media or fashion magazines? I have, even though I KNOW it's not real!

TRIP & TIPS BY Shannon Bird of

here to stay: I recommend staying at The Grand Hotel, it is attached to California Adventure and super close to the entrance of Disney, sometimes you can purchase The Grand hotel package at Costco. If you are going in the winter I would not stay at the Disney Hotel (this is different than The Grand) , it is fairly far away to the park entrance, same distance as if you were to stay at the Marriott on the other side of the park to walk to. If you are going in the spring or summer, stay at the Disneyland Hotel they have way fun pools, and is worth it. We stayed at the Marriott directly across the street from the park entrance this time, because we had a last min. change of plans. We were going to be spending this coming up weekend at Disney, but Hudson begged not to miss his gymnastics comp. so we changed our travel dates and by the time we rescheduled room rates were sky high. * Due to the Disney Candlelight Choir that was on Saturday and Sunday* The Candlelight Choir was so powerful and emotional. Sunday was our last day at the park, after the most magical day of all! As we walked out of the park, the biggest choir I have ever seen and the most beautiful nativity story I have ever heard was triamphantly booming throughout the park. The Christmas spirit was strong and I couldn’t stop the tears. It was powerful! The whole time Dallin kept saying his mom would have loved to of seen this. And talking about how Walt himself was probably conducting the choir.

On Sunday we also did the Bippity-Boppity Boutique where Holland was turned into a real princess and Hudson was knighted a knight. You have to do this if you have littles. Here is the phone number if you want to schedule *it’s fairly hard to find online* 1 (714) 781-7895 book in advance as it fills up quickly! Our young family does not do the hopper pass. We buy the three day park pass and spend 2 days in Disneyland and 1 day in California Adventure. I recommend this to all families, and play it by ear. You can always add more days to your pass at the discounted rate. For instance we almost went into the park for a 4th day and it would have only been an additional $25 a ticket. You can add more days to your pass within a 13 day window. You don’t have to commit up front to the full 5 day pass if you don’t wish to. If you have early birds like me, I recommend starting your day at the park at 8 am or 9 am, taking a nap break, and then coming back to the park after naps so that the kids can see the fireworks. I am a hypocryte on this one. We ran the kids both morning and afternoon, so they fell asleep at 7:30pm every night. I would take the two littles

www.BirdalaMode.com

home, and I would watch fireworks from my balcony, while Hudson and Dallin went on big rides. It worked out great, but I would have preferred all staying together and watching the fireworks as a family.

So many beautiful memories were made and a trip I want to remember forever. If you have a child that is tall enough to ride rides along with smaller children who can’t, make sure to get the switch rider pass. Ask for this when you are about to enter onto a ride. That way your child can ride the ride twice in a row, once with each parent. This is our first time having a child who was tall enough and this alone made our trip. Dallin and I were able to ride rides. Which is so fun for Dallin especially because he didn’t grow up going to Disneyland, being from NJ, so a lot of the rides were his and Hudson’s first time on them. The best thing that we did this trip was take a “vacation from our vacation” a little “Disney Detox” if you will. We are staying in Newport for a few days and relaxing as a famiy, enjoying mid 60 degree weather before we go back to 8 degree weather…..brrrr…..

GOAL-S

By son il W i all

K

I

t happens every January. With the start of a new year, fueled with fresh ambition, New Year’s Resolutions are etched and the passion to achieve new heights in health, love, finances and life peaks. Give it a week or two and many well-intentioned achievers toss their goals aside and slip back into their comfortable lives. Sound familiar? Perhaps the failure comes from the result of a sub-par goal mindset. Ready for upgrade? Then read on. What if 2017 could be different? What if you allowed space for your beautiful soul to help you create a rich life? Let’s connect your heart, mind and soul and infuse the new year and the new chapter of your life with passion, love, and commitment. Follow these simple steps to creating a beautiful, authentic, soul-inspired life.

1. Before writing a “to-do” list for 2017, purify your intentions and first write down how you really want to feel. How do you want to feel when you wake up every morning? How do you want to feel when you look in the mirror? How do you want to feel in your relationships? Do you want to feel beautiful, connected, healthy, strong, confident, and centered? Write these core, desired feeling down first. I recommend first person, present tense. For example, “I feel 10 THE BEAUTY BATTALION

gorgeous, fulfilled, abundant, grateful and blessed.” It doesn’t matter if they are true in your life yet. Just write them down.

2.

Allowing space for those new thoughts and feelings to nest in, ponder and choose 2-5 main experiences (A.K.A. goals or resolutions) that will help you to sustain those feelings. Focus on abundance in the wording you choose. For instance, consider replacing “Go on a diet and lose 15lbs.” with, “Throw out junk food and fuel my body with healthy, clean, well deserved nourishment.”

3.

Post these new statements where you can read them, with love and passion, aloud morning and night. I recommend the bathroom mirror. Attach this new habit to an old habit, such as reading it right after you brush your teeth.

4.

Toss the internal criticism that says, “But this is not you. You can’t change. Good things only happen to other people. I told you so.” You don’t have to be perfect to play. Create room in your life to help these new thoughts and habit transpire and release thoughts of failure and defeat. These may come, but if you acknowledge them and let them pass, they do not need to stay and hijack your future.

UPGRADE YOUR SETTING MINDSET “This one step – choosing a goal and sticking to it – changes everything.” ~ Scott Reed

For 2017, hold your energy high and allow your new desired thoughts and feelings to permeate your actions and new results. Daily nurture your core desired feelings. Growth may be subtle at first, but change will come and the transformation will feel amazing. This is where life gets good. All my love,

ou have a personal trainer, but do you have a personal aesthetician? They certainly have their similarities. For instance, you’ll need to visit more than just once to see serious improvements—but the results are more than worth it. Different from a dermatologist, an aesthetician’s passions combine both the science of skin with the love for a beautiful complexion.

#2 You’ll realize how little you know about your own skin. You may think you know your skin but could be completely surprised after making a visit to a professional aesthetician. Most women have misdiagnosed their skin type, resulting in shelves full of products that could be useless or even detrimental to their skin health.

FABULOUS WINTER The weather changes associated with chillier seasons can wreak havoc on hair. As the frost bites and the flakes begin to fall, there's no need to worry about fly-aways, dry strands and lifeless locks. These five simple tips from Pureza Salon & Spa Top Hairstylist, Lani Sherman, will help you keep your hair looking like a million bucks throughout winter with KĂŠrastase luxury hair care products.

Trim Split Ends After the holiday parties and fun, your locks are probably due for a cut. Schedule a quick trim to get rid of split ends for a fresh, clean look heading into the coldest months of winter.

Heal with Moisture Help repair yesterday's damage while protecting it against weather woes with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner treatment. The trick is to use products that enrich hair without weighing it down. Lani recommends KĂŠrastase RESISTANCE BAIN FORCE ARCHITECTE Repairing Reconstructing Shampoo for Damaged Hair. Each fiber is reconstructed, revitalized, shiny, and smooth. Hair is soft, firm to the touch and protected. Rebuilds and strengthens the hair fiber from roots to ends. Helps prevent breakage and split ends. Enriched with Pro-Keratin: a protein which mimics the function of keratin and rebuilds the hair.

R HAIR IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS Block Breakage Chilly weather and additional styling steps can stress the hair's cuticle and put locks at risk of breakage. To protect strands, add a nutrientdense serum to your hair-care routine. Lani recommends KĂŠrastase RESISTANCE FIBRE ARCHITECTE Reconstructive serum that repairs and delivers long-lasting style memory for damaged, split ends. Delivers long lasting styling results. Gives a non-greasy, fresh haircut feel. Smoothes the surface and adds shine. Infused with Intra-Cylane which recreates a holding structure around each breakage point. Pro-Keratin fills in the gaps in the cortex while Ceramides build external cohesion and smooth the surface.

Style with Volume Hair-styling routines come full force in the winter, meaning you're probably reaching for your dryer and curling iron daily. This is the ideal time to switch to products that protect hair without adding extra weight. KĂŠrastase MOUSSE BOUFFANTE is a Volumizing Mousse for Buildable Volume and Body. This formula envelops the fiber to thicken strands for all-over volume. Adds fullness and structure without weight. Not stiff, flexible movement. UV and heat protection.

Now, crisp days and chilly nights don't mean sacrificing fabulous hair. To learn more visit: www.facebook.com/purezaspa or www.purezaspa. com/ To book your next hair appointment with Lani Sherman, call: 801.616.3042

NICOLE ROUNDY By Amy Donaldson@adonsports Courtesy of DeseretNews.com

“I was 16, and I just wanted to be independent. I wanted to do everything by myself. I saw snowboarding, and I thought, ‘I should be able to do that.’” But when she asked about it, she was told it would be impossible for her. Roundy lost her right leg above the knee when she was 8 years old in a battle against bone cancer (osteogenic sarcoma). “I can remember certain things,” she said of her fight with cancer. “I remember most of the positive, happy things. My mom and siblings remember the hard stuff.” The youngest of six children, Roundy wanted anything other than being babied. Without a knee, prosthetics only allowed her about a 20-degree bend in her leg. She tried basketball, volleyball and other adaptive sports when she was young. “I tried to be involved as best I could, but I was always too slow,” she said. “I always got tired before everyone else. So I was the benched athlete or the water girl. I tried, but I just couldn’t keep up." Which makes it a bit ironic that she’ll compete in one of the fastest, most exciting racing sports on snow — snowboard cross. But just getting a shot at snowboarding took a special kind of determination. “They said, ‘Oh, you’re missing your knee, and you’ll never be able to do that,'” she said of the response she got when she asked about snowboarding the first time. “Or, if you do it, you’ll never be good at it. I actually had to wait for two years. We were waiting for somebody to give me a chance. There weren’t any prosthetics you could use at the time for snowboarding.”

"I always hope that the people I meet go back to their lives and their families feeling empowered."

Roundy was introduced to skiing and snowboarding through a camp at Shriners Hospital. While she enjoyed three-track skiing, she wanted something that she could do on her own, something that didn’t require her to take off her prosthetic. She saw snowboarding as that opportunity, but it took her time — and the determined innovation of someone else before she could even try snowboarding. Jarem Frye, who grew up in Utah and now lives in Oregon, also lost a leg to childhood cancer, and he also got his start on three-track skiing. But because of his desire to try other sports, like telemark skiing, he started trying to modify his own prosthetic with automotive valves and shock absorbers. Finally, with the help of a machining student at BYU, he developed a prototype in 2000 that allowed him enough mobility to turn almost as if he had two legs. Once he moved to Oregon in 2006, he started a company called Symbiotechs USA, which is when Roundy found his creation. When she finally got her chance in 2006, she didn’t look back. She also didn’t have to worry about being compared to anyone else. Roundy became the first above-the-knee amputee to compete in snowboarding. “The great thing about snowboarding was that there was nobody else doing it,” she said. “So whether I was good or not, it didn’t matter. I think it was kind of exciting to be the first person to take something and actually compete.” Her first moments on a snowboard, she admits, were promising to no one but her. “I had a lot of bruises everywhere,” she laughed. “I just kept getting back up and doing it again because it was so fun. It comes with a little bit of adrenaline, and you need an inner sense of determination.”

R

oundy said the freedom of being on her own and unhindered by anything except her own fear was a turning point in her life. She started competing in local races against able-bodied athletes. It wasn’t until 2009 that she started to consider Paralympic dreams. “That was the first time I took it seriously,” she said. “I went to New Zealand and did a World Cup, and it was at that point that I said, “Yeah, I really want to be able to go to the Paralympics. I want to see this sport succeed.’” At the time, snowboarding wasn’t included in the Paralympic program. She said that until the sport was embraced by the Paralympic movement, finding financial support was extremely difficult. “Until you reach that Paralympic level, the support and the funding just really isn’t there,” she said. “There’s been a lot of people come and gone and who didn’t make it to this point,” she said of making the 2014 U.S. team. “There’s been injuries, life changes, people getting married and moving on with their lives.” “The biggest thing we get (out of being included) is that we get people excited about the sport,” she said. “It would push it to where we haven’t been able to on our own. We want people to see there are no limitations.”

Nicole Roundy I think when people meet me, they are curious but they don't associate me to my resume. It's interesting to watch the transformation when they discover who I am and what I do. Up to that point, I'm just another face in the room. I don't think people really remember what we did or said, they remember how we made them feel. I always hope that the people I meet go back to their lives and their families feeling empowered. I met Missy on a photoshoot over the summer and immediately felt a connection to her. This was a woman who is beautiful and powerful, ever more than she knows. There are so many people in this world screaming for help. Drowning under the weight of “perfection.” After hearing about her vision for the Beauty Battalion, I know it was something I wanted to be involved with. Working with the Beauty Battalion was extraordinary because it reminded me that while I have physical beauty, I also have an honest, giving heart, and so much left to give the world. My trials and failures have transformed my life, but they only define me in the way I allow them too. Life can bring out our worst or it can empower us to become stronger individuals. The choice is always ours. --Nicole

s a child, Nicole was ambitious, energetic and outgoing. She spent much of her childhood outdoors kicking soccer balls and exploring the outdoors with her two older brothers. Then at 8 years old, she was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Later that year she lost her right leg above-the-knee and continued aggressive chemo therapy treatment. As any individual touched by cancer, Nicole’s life took a dramatic turn. Following the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic games, Nicole stepped onto a ski slope for the first time. The beauty, adrenaline and excitement of three-track skiing captivated her, but something was missing. Deemed “impossible” due to a lack of prosthetic knee technology, Nicole found her passion in snowboarding.

In 2006 she became the first above-knee amputee, male or female, to compete in adaptive snowboarding. Her accomplishments spearheaded global demand for prosthetic knee technology and played a fundamental role in the introduction of snowboarding to the Paralympic roster. Nicole represented the United States in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games and is an 8X World Cup Medalist. She is consistently ranked as one of the best adaptive snowboarders in the world. Not only is Nicole an amazing athlete, but she is an accomplished motivational speaker and holds a degree in business management. F ASHION STYLE MUFFIN TOPS AND VPLS BE GONE

WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION FAUX-PAS, MUFFIN TOPS ARE THE MOST COMMON, AS WELL AS MISBEHAVING CLEAVAGES AND VISIBLE PANTYLINES. HERE'S SOME ADVICE ON GETTING THE BASICS RIGHT:

C

ELEBRITIES MAY LEAD THE WAY IN BIG FASHION BLUNDERS, BUT EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE A GHASTLY OUTFIT ON THEY TEND TO STICK TO THE GOLDEN RULES OF STYLE, SUCH AS NOT HAVING A VISIBLE PANTY LINE (VPL) OR SHOWING OFF MUFFIN TOPS IN ALL THEIR GLORY. This might not stop them from getting wasted and showing off their panties to all and sundry, but at least they start off by sticking to the rules. Muffin tops are bottom of the class: If you squeeze your belly, however bulgy or small it might be, into a

pair of trousers or a skirt that's too small, your belly has no other option but to overspill. The result is an ugly muffin top, which you can make out of the smallest of bellies if you wear the wrong size. Whenever anything cuts into your belly or even feels snug, it's too small. When trying things on, sit down to see what happens to your belly, as muffin tops are at their plumpest then. Cleavage in all the wrong places: In a similar situation, if you wear a bra that's too small, your boobs will spill over into your armpits, which isn't the kind of

cleavage that blokes go for. You will also probably get ugly muffins in your back too. If you've been wearing the same bra size for years and your weight has crept up, you're probably wearing the wrong bra size. The key is to make sure your bra is the correct size around your back and that you adjust the straps to allow for more room in the cups.

FASHION STYLE 31

V

PLs and knickers up your bum: Many women compare G-strings to cheese cutters, which is not a bad comparison if you're not used to having material wedges up there all day. If you can't bear the intrusion and love your big pants, choose a brief that completely covers your bottom if you want to avoid a VPL.

The most common mistake is wearing a white bra because you're wearing a white or light coloured top. Light fabrics are naturally a little see-through, which means your underwear will shine through. This applies to knickers as well. If you're wearing light colours, put on nude underwear. If you are very dark skinned, you should wear black underwear.

Boys' short-style briefs and hipster briefs are best. These also avoid the unpleasant but necessary situation of pulling your knickers out of your bottom when walking down the street. As a bonus, they also stop a bit of wobble too.

Tripping over your trousers: You can lengthen your legs to rival those of a supermodel's if you wear slightly too long trousers with killer heels. However, if you wear long trousers with flats, it will look as if you're wearing the wrong trousers and your legs will look shrunken.

If you can wear a G-string without wincing, don't flash them off above your jeans unless you like the trailer park trash look. Get yourself some low-rise strings that stay private even when you bend down.

As a rule, the hem of your trousers should fall 2cm down your heel, but this does cause a bit of a problem when you want to wear the same pair of trousers with both flats and heels. There's no easy answer for this other than buying two different lengths or not going from one heel extreme to another.

Having them all on show: Even if you're wearing the right bra and knickers, you're not quite home free yet. Pay attention to the colour of your underwear and your clothes.

I'm a journalist and blogger from Colombia, with a special passion for fashion, culture and entertainment. My experience comes from a really long background in journalism and content writing. Fashion is not only my job, is what I breathe, think and dress everyday. Trying to live my life to the

Every year has its own thing. 2016 is definitely a year to forget when it comes to the world situation, and there’s more than one of us wishing this few days go away really quickly so we can put all that behind. And it happens the same way in the fashion industry, of course.

T

hese last seasons we’ve been seeing trends that seem not to go away anytime soon even though we’ve had enough of them. That is the case for off the shoulders and the 'sport chic' vibe that took our closets by storm. Keep them for 2017, but remember to use them carefully. However, there are new additions to your style that you might want to check out. Bonorum et Malorum"

spring, becoming the main feature in some of our favorite pieces: tops, skirts, even pants, and jackets. Like with the stripes, here is better to go big or go home. However, one of the best tips when it comes to wearing ruffles is to pay attention to the size of these. If you’re short, try small ones. If you’re tall, the big ones are for you. This is all so you don’t look like the fabric is swallowing you.

BOLD STRIPES Stripes are classic, but not always a trend. And as much as you may have some striped pieces in your closet, it’s always good to take a look at this trend because trust me, we haven’t seen stripes like these in a long, long time. This new trend comes with big bold stripes that will take over your wardrobe, which is the reason why you should choose simple accessories to pair them with. Go for the big kick: a colorful dress or a skirt, maybe with your favorite sneakers.

METALLICS WE’VE BEEN ALWAYS IN LOVE WITH GOLD, REACHING THE POINT WHERE WE WOULD LOVE TO WEAR IT HEAD TO TOE. BUT METALLIC FOR THE NEXT YEAR IS DIFFERENT. STARTING IN FALL 2016, OUR FAVORITE COLORS STARTED TO TURN INTO THE METALLIC SO THEY COULD BECOME MORE JEWELRY LIKE. THAT’S HOW WE HAVE RUBY, EMERALD, SAPPHIRE AND MORE. OF COURSE, GOLD AND SILVER ARE STILL GOING TO BE EVERYONE’S FAVORITES, BUT THESE OTHER OPTIONS ARE EXCELLENT FOR THE ONES WHO’D LIKE TO KEEP THING INTERESTING AND LOOK LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS WITH JUST PUTTING ON A TOP OR SKIRT. OH! AND ONE MORE THING: THIS TREND WILL HELP US DEFEAT A CLICHE: JUST WEAR BRIGHT ITEMS AT NIGHT. TRY TO INCORPORATE THESE PIECES AND COLORS INTO YOUR EVERYDAY WARDROBE, THE WORLD WILL NOTICE AND YOU WILL FEEL LIKE YOU’RE PART OF THE ROYALTY.

RUFFLES ALL THE WAYI told you, some of the last seasons’ trends will still be a big deal in 2017. Ruffles are one of those trends, but they seem to multiply for the

PLEATS Stop it right there if you think I’m suggesting a comeback of your old catholic school uniform. I lived that age in my life (for 10 years, to be exact) and I would never do such a thing ever again. In fact, I feel sorry for all the poor girls who still have to pull that off every day to go to classes. What I’m suggesting is a more chic, elegant and pretty way to wear pleated, that is becoming a huge trend since last fall and will conquer your closet next year. This pleated will not only come on skirts, designers have been experimenting with this texture on tops, dresses, and even pants, to make them into flirty fun pieces that you can wear separately or with easy accessories (like sneakers with a midi skirt). If you’re thinking ahead, an amazing option would be a pleated dress in a jewel color, which will make your next party so much more interesting.

Think outside the box and look for that special piece whose pleated make you feel original and comfy.

ROMANTIC LACE Valentino has been doing it for a few runway shows now: taking the lace to a whole new level and use it beyond our intimates. Think dresses, tops, skirts, whatever you want, you can now add lace to it to make it romantic and cute. If you want to try this trend, look for different texture which creates a balanced look: go for a sexy lace top with jeans or a leather jacket. The trick here is not to overdose because you don’t want to look like your hitting the streets in your pajamas.

I

have always had a passion for fashion. While growing up in the Midwest I nourished my love for clothes by taking sewing classes and studying fashion magazines to try and create the couture and runway looks that I would see from my style icons. While I will always have a sentimental nostalgia for my local mall back home (my childhood stomping grounds where I honed my shopping and buying expertise), it was difficult to find those unique and designer pieces that I had so ardently envisioned. After moving to Los Angeles, one of the meccas for fashion and design, I discovered an entire world of incredible artist and designers I had never had access to before, or at least at an affordable price.

Here at Kelli Couture we have worked hard to find and partner with some of these amazing designers to bring you trendy and unique fashions that we wear and love. Please have fun shopping our store and wear your heart on your sleeve...and your dress ...on those awesome pants...and that great purse too!

emperatures have dropped to pretty unbearable levels in most parts of the country, which means many of us begrudgingly have to temporarily shelve cute outfits in favor of boring fleece and clunky winter boots. But guess what? Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean we have to collectively resign ourselves to giving up on style, it just means we all have to think a bit more creatively when getting dressed in the morning. depths of winter—is very possible. Here, a few of our top tips and tricks. And seriously, stay warm out there.

BECOME A LAYERING PRO. There is a reason layering is such a big trend this season: it’s a massively practical way to dress when it’s really cold. So don’t be afraid to pile on the layers. A turtleneck, under a sweater, under a jacket, under a coat, for instance, will definitely keep you warm. So will a dress or skirt over a pair of pants (much warmer than a pair of tights).

Great winter style really boils down to a great pair of boots. Got a great pair of over-the-knee boots? Show them off pairing them with a short dress. Have killer ankle boots you want to make sure the world gets to see? Pair them with cuffed jeans or a dress. And if it’s snowing and you are forced to wear less than fashionable snow boots? Use them as a jumping off point to put together a great new inventive outfit, rather than just throwing them on with just anything.

T

he deceitful depths to which women stoop to conceal their spending from their partners have been laid bare in a new study. Excuses, secretly stashing away purchases and downright lies are a regular ritual for a shocking amount of women throughout the UK. Researchers quizzed 2,000 women and found two thirds of them relied on excuses to feel better about spending money on themselves. "I haven't bought anything for ages" and "I deserve this" are the most popular pleas trotted out by women after a shopping spree, while a third use a pre-prepared list to justify their spending to their partners - "It's a bargain", "I need this to cheer me up" and "It was on sale" completing the top five. The research, commissioned by money-saving website LoveFashionSales.com, found "I'll get my money's worth'" or "I really need this" were regularly used, while many are convinced they have nothing to wear.

42

"I've wanted one for ages" and "I'll wear it all the time" rounded off the top 10 excuses for shoppers a third of whom admitted to reciting their justifications aloud to themselves, ready for a grilling on their purchases. The researchers also found that half the women questioned confessed to hiding their buys and on average have stashed three big purchases in the last six months to avoid being caught out on their spending habits. The bottom of the wardrobe was the most popular hiding place, although four in 10 use a drawer they know their partner will never look in. A fifth of shopaholics stash their guilty buys under the bed, while kitchen cupboards and the bathroom were also popular spots.

More than a quarter of women admit to lying to their partner's face about their bills, while the fibs stretch to parents, friends and other family for a sneaky 30%.

Company founder Rob Gorton says: "It's amusing to think of women hiding their purchases and the lengths they will go to avoid being confronted on their spending. "Finding something at a bargain price while still getting that new purchase feeling is the best way to ensure women get the treats they work hard to afford, without having to break the bank.

a g n i n i Sh t on ligh en's m o w ping p s o h s t e r sec

"Many women pride themselves on their ability to know a bargain when they see one and in these tougher financial times it's more important than ever to know where to look." A bare-faced one in five said they've worn a brand new item and pretended it was old while 20% buy clothes and accessories in the supermarket because they know their partners will think the cash was spent on food. And a manipulative one in 10 make sure they buy their partner a present when shopping, purely to soften him up so they can spend more on themselves.

Three quarters genuinely believe in the power of retail therapy, with the buzz of a bargain proving the strongest high - 70% say they love saving money on new clothes, while half feel justified buying something if they can get it at a discount.

Almost 50% say internet shopping, with payment taken at the touch of a button, doesn't feel like spending. A third told researchers they don't feel as guilty about shopping online and find it the best way to bag a bargain. Interestingly the research revealed that when it comes to indulging themselves, women prefer to spend money on clothes, shoes and handbags instead of holidays, spa treatments, hair appointments or food.

HOW I LEARNED SELF-LOVE IN JUST ONE AFTERNOON…SORT OF. by rachel slawson

S

ix months ago, if you had asked me if I loved myself, the answer would’ve been no.

begging for her to move us. I was only eight years old at the time. Some might say I was a very… passionate… eight year old.

Luckily nobody asked. Six months later, everything has changed. This transformation began the day I decided to spend the summer in Los Angeles. It had been my dream to move here since I was a child. I used to wake my mom up in the middle of the night in tears

T

I had just flown back from LA from a call-back for a reality TV show, and I had caught the LA fever. The moment I decided it was time to make the big leap, I jumped.

But I was absolutely terrified. Every single day I called my family saying “I’m so scared… I’m so scared.”

hat very day, I quit my job, sold most of my belongings, and packed up my car to the brim with everything that was left.. I drove the entire 9 hours praying that I wouldn’t ram into another car at 70 mph as I switched lanes. (This is one of those “Do not try this at home kids” kind of stories). Thankfully I made it to the city of my dreams in one piece. But I was absolutely terrified. Every single day I called my family saying “I’m so scared… I’m so scared.” Few things in life are as scary as

46

One morning in May, I woke up and decided it was time to see if I could make it in the “City of Angels.”

starting over with nothing. I had a temporary place to live, a job that promised pay… eventually… and no friends or support. I was hopeful for all the opportunities that were ahead, but everything was uncertain. The first 24 hours after I arrived, I was locked out of my new home, and ended up sleeping on the porch until I eventually decided to go to a hotel. When I returned half of my belongings were stolen. I’ll never forget that. But I will also never forget the miraculous recovery of my belongings from a dumpster.

47

T-

hat night I spent dancing instead of worrying, trusting that everything was going to be okay. The next morning, I woke up at a hotel to find a prominent health convention happening below. I met Dave Asprey that day, founder of Bulletproof and a notable voice in the health community. That meeting initiated a butterfly effect that led to major lifestyle changes in my diet that would cure me of health issues I’ve had for years. It also led to meeting some of the best friends I have made in LA. Friends that taught me in just one afternoon the lesson I was trying to find in the first place: how to love myself. ---Continue

But I’ll get to that in a moment. For now, I ask you to follow me through a very specific chain of events.

Made it into a comedy showcase through my acting school, which led to a meeting with a huge management agency. Didn’t get signed.

The next three months were a whirlwind of wins and disappointments. They went something like this: Moved into a beautiful apartment on the Marina. Fell in love. Got into the best acting studio in LA. Got offered a job working for Justin Timberlake’s tech company, only to have it revoked when the man running the hiring process realized I would not sleep with him. Applied to 100 other jobs. Never heard back. Fell deeper in love. Got my heart broken. Lost my place of living the same day. Found a married couple on Craigslist I moved in with. Almost didn’t make rent. Woke up every day in fear. Got a few miracle freelance gigs just as I thought I wouldn’t be able to make it. Started waitressing at night for extra money. Got discovered at my waitressing gig by an incredible director Worked as his assistant for a month. Got booked for a reality TV show pilot and quit. Almost didn’t make rent. Caught myself saying, “I’m so scared,” out loud, when a friend asked me, “What did you just say?” I didn’t even realize my thoughts were so overpowering that I was starting to unconsciously speak them.

48

Almost moved back to Utah. Got an offer to do marketing for an Industrial Design Studio, from a random woman I had met by the pool when I had first arrived. Found the perfect job, realizing finally I would be able to stay in LA. Peace at last, at least for now.

UP AND DOWN, UP AND DOWN. EVERYTHING FALLING APART JUST TO FALL TOGETHER PERFECTLY FOR THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY. BUT PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHAIN OF EVENTS WAS THIS: The very first day when I got locked out and lost half of my things, stayed in a hotel and ended up at a health convention the next morning, I had no idea the chain of events it would set off. Meeting Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof, led to my (now ex) boyfriend trying to help me get a job at their company, which led to a dinner with a guy named Jordan who worked for Bulletproof, which led to an invitation to a bungee jumping retreat, which leads me to the day I learned in just one afternoon, precisely how to love myself. It was a regular Friday, and I was supposed to go camping and bungee jumping with my new friends. Bungee jumping was the one thing I said I would never do. I’d gone skydiving, backpacking in third world countries, hiking in flash floods. However bungee jumping was a fat no. “I’m not throwing my body off a bridge,” I thought.

I took my promise to my mother very seriously. You know, the one where you promise that you wouldn’t jump off a bridge even if all your friends were doing it. Perhaps that was a hasty promise. Regardless, I told everyone on the camping trip that I wouldn’t jump. We hiked up to the Bridge to Nowhere, a five mile hike through the San Gabriel Mountains. And the whole hike up I was very confident in my decision not to jump. No one pressured me on the climb up, not even once. They just expressed gratitude for my willingness to come along and watch. But then I got there.

S As I watched the jumpers climb over the wall, I completely trusted that they would not die. I trusted that if I jumped I would not die, no one had ever died on that bridge. So then why was I so afraid to just… jump? Because jumping meant finally having the courage to get out of my own way. To do the incredible things I had always longed to do, but never believed I would be brave enough to try. For the reason I had promised myself I would never bungee jump was not because I didn’t want to, but because I was afraid I couldn’t. I was the last person to pay that day. I was the last person harnessed up. As I was about to back out, my instructor asked me something that changed everything. “I can’t talk you into wanting to do this, do you want to do it? If you want to, when I count to five, you’ll jump.” I examined the flag on the other side of the canyon, the one that we were

Watching everyone face their fears and return in a state of pure joy sparked an insatiable curiosity in me.

49

As I watched my friends, I remembered the book I was reading at the time: “Love is Letting Go of Fear.” And it clicked. The opposite of love is not hatred, not even indifference. The opposite of love is fear. Love is letting go of fear. If I wanted to love myself, I had to face my biggest fear. A fear bigger than moving. Bigger than heartbreak. Bigger than spiders, terrorism, or even death. For I have never feared death. What I have feared is jumping.

supposed to jump towards instead of looking down. I examined the wall holding me back. And I looked down at my shaking hands that were clenched nervously to my harness.

Not tears of fear, but tears of joy.

In an instant, my thoughts became clear.

In having the courage to dive into my fear, I realized that was where my self-love had lived all along. Just behind the walls I had built inside myself. Walls of fear.

I wouldn’t have hiked five miles, paid, harnessed up, and walked to the edge of this bridge if I didn’t want to know what would happen on the other side. I wanted to know. I wanted to jump. And when you want something, the only person who can stop you from getting it is yourself. The wall of the bridge became the divide between my comfort zone and self-doubt. The wall of fear. The flag on the other side of the canyon transformed into everything I had ever wanted but had been too afraid to believe I could have. I nodded at my instructor. Climbed right over the fence, and flung my body off a bridge without a second thought.

Tears of love. Self-love.

And in climbing over, I climbed over the walls that had stopped me from loving myself. In facing my greatest fear, in losing myself to it, I found myself. A love I would never have found if I hadn’t woken up one day, packed up my car, lost half of my belongings and ended up with messy hair and barefoot in a hotel lobby meeting Dave Asprey. A love I would never have found if I hadn’t packed up my car, harnessed up, and JUMPED.

And I cried the whole way down.

GOAL SETTING TECHNIQUES THAT WORK BY LISA MILLER-MECHAM

I

t's a New Year, a new better you right? We love the fresh start a new year can bring and the endless opportunities and optimism I always feel surrounding this time of year. We seem to start our year off with an intense motivation to create our best selves. We sign up for gym memberships, skip the sugar, stock up on nicotine patches, and declare to ourselves that this time will be different. Sadly, by February, most of us won't have ever opened our foreign language audio books or stuck with our 5am Pilates classes. So what went wrong? What makes reaching our goals so hard? Today, I've compiled a

few key practices that successful, goaloriented people use to reach their goals, stay on track, and create their best selves in record time. Bring on 2017!

Create A Vision Board No matter what your resolution is, creating a vision board is a great, creative practice to help visualize exactly what you are working towards. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a vision board is a collection of images that remind you of your end goal. They can be messy, detailed, perfectly symmetrical, or anything in between. The only rule in using a vision board is that you need to display it somewhere that you will see it every day. Hiding it in a binder or the back of your closet isn't going to cut it. When you see it every day, your subconscious (and conscious mind) are reminded of everything you are working towards. The visual reminder helps keep you motivated, on track, and successful.

Meditate/ Visualize There have been countless studies done on the benefits of mediation. Besides it being an incredible stress-reliever, immune booster, and anxiety-reducer, meditation has been known to help people reach their goals as well. By quieting the mind and focusing on your breathing for 10-15 minutes a day, you'll find that you're better at problem-solving, more creative, and sleep easier. Depending on what feels right to you, spend some time visualizing your resolution before/ after/ or during your meditation session. Imagine what it will feel like to have accomplished your goal and visualize yourself already achieving it. Take 10-15 minutes every day to discover new motivation you never knew you had. 50 THE BEAUTY BATTALION | JANUARY 2017

“A goal properly set is halfway reached. ~ Zig Ziglar Keep A Gratitude Journal I know you may be thinking this is painfully unrelated, but bear with me. Gratitude has an amazing ability to bring even more gratitude and positivity to nearly any situation. There will undoubtedly be times this year when your goal feels out of reach and the day is out of your control. These are the moments in particular that if you can shift your mindset and remain positive, you can keep pushing forward with your resolutions and what matters most. Gratitude journals are an incredibly effective way to do this. Especially at the end of a bad day, writing down 5 things that you are grateful for can truly shift your mindset and bring about more positive change. By starting the simple daily practice of noticing the good and being grateful for it, you'll begin to notice more and more things to be

Write Your Goals Each Morning This year, set a legal pad or beautiful notebook next to your coffee maker to start your day off right. Most of us will go through an entire year and only write our resolutions down once or twice while the extremely successful write their goals every single day. That's right. Every. Single. Day. By writing your resolutions down as if they have already happened, you are better able to visualize completing them. Start each day off on the right foot and you'll never go a day without thinking about your goal again. The process of physically writing them down helps your brain process your goal differently and remembers them throughout the day better. By writing them down first thing in the morning, you'll be reminded of your goal all day and more likely take steps to achieve it.

Don't Negotiate When sheer will and stubbornness are failing and the cookie on your best friend's counter looks too good, don't negotiate. Not because it becomes a downward slippery slope or for fear that you'll completely fall off the wagon, but because you will be too steadfast in your goal that it is not up for discussion. Decide once your goal is made that you will not negotiate under any circumstances. This may seem a lot easier than said than done, but is crucial in your progress. By writing your daily goals and visualizing them as completed, it will be easier to envision yourself overcoming the temptation of slacking off on your resolutions. One practice helps the other and your motivation will only build on itself. 51

CONFIDENCE-BOOSTING TIPS FOR FITNESS CLASS FIRST-TIMERS You've joined a health club and now you're curious about fitness classes. You're almost ready to sign up for an indoor cycle, yoga or strength-training class, but something stops you. You feel nervous and uncomfortable and decide to wait.

Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to exercise because you're guided by an expert, plus the energy of the group keeps you motivated. However, because it's something new that puts people outside their comfort zone, it's 53

common to feel apprehensive in the beginning. To help you gain confidence to try any type of group exercise class, consider these tips from three health club members. Comfort over style. "Trust me, no one cares what you're wearing," says Deb Kampe, a member at Life Time, which operates 122 destinations across the United States and in Canada. "If you want to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, do it. Head-to-toe athleisure? Do it. A tutu? Do it. Just make sure you're comfortable and safe. Don't spend a fortune on the latest fitness clothing trends or labels. Expensive does not equal better."

Keep an open mind. "Group fitness classes are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. You may be unfamiliar with the equipment you'll use or how hard it might be, but I guarantee you will feel the burn," Mezzenga says. Listen to your body. "You know your body best," says Meriwether. "If something doesn't feel right or if you know you have problems with something, modify the workout correspondingly. People do that all the time and many instructors are good about suggesting such modifications." Give it 100 percent. "You get out what you put in," Meriwether says. "If you put in minimal effort, you can expect minimal results. But if you give it your all, you can expect some pretty fantastic fitness changes."

Don't be self-conscious. "It's easy to assume everyone in class is fit, knows all the moves and is judging you. No one cares," Kampe says. "Once the music starts and the instructor begins, all eyes are up front taking direction and being lifted into Bring water. BURNING OFF BELLY FAT

By Robert Ferguson

For years it has been the advice of Diet Free Life that circuit training [a combination of cardio and resistance training, which includes lifting weights and strength building exercises] is how you exercise to burn belly fat. If it’s not circuit training, the other recommended method is high intensity interval training with your cardio. In a NEW study, researchers assigned roughly 150 overweight, sedentary, middle-aged men and women with high LDL (“bad”) or low HDL (“good”) cholesterol to aerobic training, resistance training, or both. The cardio sessions meant doing the equivalent of about 12 miles a week at a vigorous pace on treadmills, elliptical trainers, or stationary bicycles. For resistance training, participants performed three sets of each of eight exercises, with eight to 12 repetitions per set, three days a week. > Get your Diet Free Life Program and get FREE Shipping After eight months, those who did just resistance training lost only subcutaneous (below-the-skin) abdominal fat. In contrast, those who did cardio—with or without resistance training—lost deep belly fat, subcutaneous belly fat, and fat from around the liver. What’s more, they were less insulin resistant—that is, their insulin was more effective at admitting blood sugar into their cells. What to do: Begin exercising where you are with the goal of combining cardio (to lose the most fat and curb insulin resistance) with resistance training (to minimize the loss of muscle that occurs as you age). I like to design products that will take me out into the world with a sense of purpose, style, and spirit. I want them to make you feel that way too. I launched Reclaimed Wreckage in 2008 to create a supplemental income that granted me the flexibility to balance motherhood, school, and everything I love. Our growth since then has been life-changing and I couldn't be more grateful. My inspiration is my own interpretation of leatherwork, current trends, and personal taste. I only use sustainable or repurposed materials in my work and my team handcrafts everything right here in the USA. Today, my work has been featured in Haute Nature, Time Out New York Magazine, Slug Magazine, Trendwatcher Magazine, Salt Lake City Weekly, IN This Week, Sessions Magazine and various blogs. We are so lucky to have the best customers and thank you so much for all of our support and love.

MEET O SHANNON BIRD

DAWN MCCARTHY

As a beauty and lifestyle expert, I've featured over 1,000 products in television, print, and in magazines. So far in 2016, I featured over 240 products on my site with just over 200 products on television. Useful information from "What is Best for Your Pet" to "What the Celebrities are Receiving at the Oscars/Emmys" and everything in between, such as travel, beauty, fashion, food, fitness, baby and tech gadgets. After being named "I am the girl in the know" for all types of products for any occasion and seen on every major network (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and the CW), I am inspired to keep you updated on products and trends for a healthy, simple lifestyle. What makes me different than other “experts” is that every year I physically attend industry events, shows, and product events. I just don’t only cover what you see in the news or everyday commercials. I have always been at the forefront of what's in and now, and love connecting with business owners, public relation firms, budding entrepreneurs, and that stay-at-home mom that just created the ultimate product that makes you think…”Why didn’t I think of that?”. I only work with products that I would personally use or recommend, so always feel free to reach out as I make sure to physically test and try each one.

My name is Shannon Bird from SLC, UT. I am a fashionable mommy who blogs. I love fashion and take much pride in dressing myself children and husband. I am passionate about fashion and making it work for me. As a mother of two very small children, 3-month-old daughter and a 2-yearold son, I still feel like it is extremely important to always take care of myself in a functional way. I feel that when I dress well I make better choices throughout the day. I eat better, feel better, and am more confident. Let’s be honest, as a mom you need all the confidence you can get. My hope when you visit my blog is that you feel inspired and motivated and feel like I am relatable.

RACHEL SLAWSON

m a native California girl, but I've called many places home. I picked up my laid back hipster vibes from Washington state, my love for travel from living overseas in Beijing China, my passion for God from my time spent in Utah, and friends from all walks of life from my years spent traveling. First and foremost, I'm a writer. I'm on a quest to infuse my life with beauty, and document light and goodness. I also am passionate about humanitarian aid, public speaking, modeling, and acting. And perhaps most importantly, I am a strong supporter of celebrating "Taco Tuesday" every day. "Salty Rachel" has been blossoming since 2012. Today it is a space where readers come to find relatable truths about God, love, and emotional health. I also sprinkle in inspiration about travel, beauty, music, and social good. This blog is a reminder that all difficult things can be endured, and bright hope is always ahead.
