SIMPLE, HEALTHY SUMMER SNACKS (Family Features) As temperatures climb and summer sets in, a slight change in diet can help maintain energy without overfilling on hot days. Vegan and vegetarian diets are becoming a popular trend, but many people are also opting to be semivegetarians, also known as the flexitarian diet. A flexitarian diet means you don’t have to eliminate meat from your diet but can still reap the health benefits associated with plant-based diets. Plant-based proteins like beans, peas, nuts, seeds, soy and lentils are chock-full of nutritional benefits from disease-fighting phytonutrients to cholesterol-lowering fiber. They’re also an excellent way to add low-sodium and lowcholesterol protein to your diet that can leave you feeling satisfied but not

3 TIPS TO STOP MOSQUITOES FROM RUINING SUMMER FUN Minimizing mosquito threats in your yard is of primary importance during summer months, but your outdoor decor and landscaping actually may be attracting mosquitoes. Dr. Mark Beavers, Orkin entomologist, recommends these tips for keeping mosquitoes at bay this summer. MINIMZE STANDING WATER Mosquitoes only need a thimble-sized amount of stagnant water to reproduce. To reduce mosquito breeding areas, Beavers recommends checking backyards for stagnant water in bird baths, under potted plants and even in your pet's water bowls. By refreshing water often or eliminating standing water sources, you can reduce the number of places mosquitoes can reproduce, according to Beavers. If a backyard pond is part of your decor, make sure the water is circulating properly. PLANT SMART Backyards are often filled with places a mosquito can hide, reproduce or feed. Planting smart and keeping vegetation growth in check can cut down on the number of mosquitoes in your yard. Be sure to trim, prune, weed and mow often to keep vegetation under control because mosquitoes love to hide in damp, dark places. Think carefully about where you place flowers and plants in your backyard so they don't attract mosquitoes to the places you sit or entertain. Flowering plants can offer a delicious meal for female mosquitoes that need to feed on flower nectar between blood meals. Plants like Bromeliads that trap water in their leaves can also be a prime place for mosquitoes to breed. 10

TURN ON THE FANS According to Beavers, another trick is to use mosquitoes' weaknesses against them. Most mosquitoes are poor flyers, so a simple deterrent is to make it difficult for them to fly. Consider installing a fan on your deck or patio, or even bring a portable fan outdoors.

Also remember your backyard basics: clothing and repellents. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, so keep your summer wardrobe light and breezy. Loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants are typically your best bet. Mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting clothes made of materials like spandex. Keep your scented body sprays and perfumes to a minimum, as mosquitoes can be attracted to strong smells. When you're heading outdoors, don't forget to apply a topical repellent spray approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. By taking these simple steps this summer, you can minimize mosquito populations in your backyard and stop mosquitoes from meddling in your summer fun. Visit Orkin.com for more pest prevention tips or to bring in a professional to assess your pest protection needs. (Family Features)

Summer is here and warm weather beckons people into backyards across the country. Unfortunately, unwelcome guests like pesky mosquitoes often want to join the festivities. Not only can mosquitoes be a biting nuisance, but they can also cause allergic reactions in some people and pets. Certain species can spread dangerous illnesses such as dengue fever, West Nile virus and Zika virus.

JUSTIN PECK #49 IS A RACE CAR DRIVER WHO’S OBSTACLES HAVE HELPED HIM WIN THE GAME OF LIFE BOTH ON AND OFF THE TRACK By Kimberly Jesika CONTRIBUTOR FOR THE HUFFINGTON POST

I

had the greatest opportunity to interview Justin Peck, about a subject that is dear to my heart. Justin is what I call an “Overcomer” “Victorious”. A Hero. A down to earth real good solid guy, that is beautifully honest and speaks from the truthful core of his being. Thank you Justin! Check out the interview!

KJ: I saw in your story where you put a gun to your head. What were you going through at the time that brought you to that place? JP: I had a pretty rough few months before the gun. I had

just come off of a tremendously manic phase in which I created another new company and was going nonstop. I felt the depressive state coming and tried super hard to fight it, but as it always does, it got the best of me. I remember waking up that morning like I typically did, kissing my wife and kids before I left for the day. I was reeling inside with despair, but I had no one to communicate that with. I knew that this was the beginning of a phase that I didn’t want to fight again, and when I saw the opportunity to end it, I tried.

KJ: I had an aunt with Bipolar disorder growing up, sadly she did not get over hers and died at 32 after turning the corner trying to get her life back. How did you know you had Bipolar? JP: I knew I had some disorder from the age of 13, but back then, there was little known about Bipolar disorder. It really wasn’t until I tried to take my life that I realized I needed help from a professional because I knew that it would only be in time before I tried again. After I pulled the trigger, the rush of adrenaline and emotion immediately pulled me out of the despair (for the moment) and it was then I realized that there is always a way out. If I could control my adrenaline or get more of it, then I could escape the despair. Now, that works to a point, and I have fought extremely hard my entire life to find that perfect balance. I still contend, but things have got substantially better. KJ: Being Bullied seems like a common theme. I remember being bullied as the smallest and loudest girl in school. How were you able to turn all that fear into fearlessness and become the great success you are? JP: Being bullied is probably one of the most destructive things that can happen to any kid in their growing years. It literally took me until I was 22 or 23 before I realized that my opinion matters and that I had the power over myself vs. others over me. I learned that once I had the control over my emotions and feelings, the constant “being picked on” moments started to vanish. I am not quite sure how I made it through my school 18

years, to be honest with you. Even to this day, when I walk into a school for my own children, I get this sick gut feeling that gives me a splash of anxiousness, but I still go back to knowing that I am the master of my mind, and I’m back at ease. I think that once I built confidence within myself, I was able to reset my timid personality into one that demands respect. I do this by showing love and respect for others, and I have found that if you carry confidence, others feed off you differently.

people those who are unlike them. The advice I would give would be this— Know just because you are different, you are still an amazing person! Know that because you have faults and that you may not be popular, you still have the human right to be happy and free of fear. You are perfect just the way you are! KJ: How have you been able to live with Bipolar disorder? Would you say it gets easier?

JP: Have I been able to manage having bipolar? However; I live by a personal saying where I pump up myself to stay motivated and in tune with my rational mind. Does it get easier? Not Really. What does get easier is the ability to limit the down moments through proper medication, diet, exercise, and positive thinking. The down moments still suck and are hard to pull out of, but I now know that I can overcome anything. KJ: If you could do one thing over in life what would that be? JP: Oh geez….That’s another hard question. Typically people want a redo because they think they failed horribly, but I have a different perspective on failure. Failure is what gives us the tools to succeed and without seeing what failure feels like, we have nothing to compare our successes to. So, I embrace these low moments and learn from every bad experience. Because of that, I think that I can be a better person not.

only for myself but others as well. I can talk about my failures in life openly with anyone and hopefully I can give others hope that even though they are struggling, there is always a way out. Let’s be honest, if I can do it, anyone can do it. Right?

KJ: Tell us about your book “Bulletproof For Life?” JP: The book started out as something I wanted to give my children. Something that could recount the life of their dad and hopefully shows them that when life gets hard,

those are the best times to learn about who you really are. After writing it for a few years and adding stories here and there, I let a friend read it, and the reaction was one that I didn’t expect. She said “I have a brother that acts just like this. Can you please talk to him and help him through his current struggle because I know you understand”. When I realized that I could share my experience with others and possibly help other people that live with mental illness, I knew this would be my path. I want to tell my goofy stories and share my many life experiences to those who want to hear them. I have found that I get asked by the spouses of someone with Bipolar more times than the person suffering from it. They want to know what they can do to help the person they love. I may not have all the answers, but I can shed light from a different perspective that I believe can help others. I want to bring awareness to mental disorders and and eliminate the “crazy” stereotype that’s associated. We are just like everyone else in most cases and strive to be happy like the rest of the world. KJ: What advice do you give your kids when they are having a bad day? Is there anything else you would like to share? 20

JP: Advice on bad days go far beyond kids. I feel that the older we get, the bad days are harder to handle for most of us. Kids are pretty damn tough and resilient, too. We all have horrible days, but we also have incredible ones as well. If we can focus on the positive things that make us happy, then the challenges seem not so bad. The other thing that I have always told people is this… What life struggle did you have exactly one year ago? Was is consuming, overwhelming, and did you think that life couldn’t go on because your struggles were so intense? Now, think about today, one year later. Are those same struggles still the same fight for you? Most of the time, they are not! We find a way to overcome our current problems and then move onto the next. So, whatever struggle you are having right at this exact moment in life, please know that one year from now, it will be nothing. There is always light at the end of the tunnel as long as we believe there is. Adapt and Overcome!!!! M

ay 12th, 2009 was a turning point in the life of Justin Peck. That was the day his dream of becoming a professional race team owner came true as he created RacePro Technologies, LLC. Since 1992 Justin had always been the driver/rider in the various motorsports disciplines he had competed in, but on that day… MAY 12th, he was officially a team owner. RacePro Technologies (RacePro Tech) provides race car fabrication, design, and prep services. The team competes in short course competition in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series and drives a Spec Trophy Truck in the Best In The Desert Series. Team drivers Justin Peck and Ray Griffith are both multi-time desert racing champions; Griffith in the Jeepspeed series and Peck who won four USRA series championships in addition to national wins in The Challenge of America’s series. Peck is also a successful business owner with a creative mind and a bold vision for RacePro Tech’s future. RacePro Tech is headquartered in Sandy, UT near Salt Lake City and the Utah Motorsports Campus. Since the creation of RacePro Tech, the growth and steady progression has propelled the team into becoming one of the super teams in the Lucas Oil Off Road Series and is always a huge threat to the other competitors in the Best In The Desert Series. The team currently runs 3 professional races cars, 5 regional race cars, and one national junior race car.

fter having read Justin's book you have a better understanding for the incredible feats this man has overcome. You understand his "tough" exterior, and his ability to walk away from insane crashes and explosions of fireballs. The man seems almost, well, pardon the pun, but bulletproof.

Having witnessed the many years of highs and lows of severe bipolar disorder, I have a very different opinion of the "disease." While many are quick to lump bipolars into a category of illness, I genuinely feel they are misunderstood. That bipolar disorder simply means, to me, a mental enigma.

Throughout the photoshoot with our team at The Beauty Battalion, Justin shared his genuine kindness. The tough-as-nails tatted up race dude was actually as sweet as they come. Full of gratitude and appreciation. He had a very calm demeanor, not typical of a diagnosed stage I bipolar, right? I should know, having grown up with my brother who had the same diagnosis.

Knowing how society judges and perceives mental disorders, made it all the more impressive that Justin opened up and shared his experiences in his book, Bulletproof. While on set, our photographer requested a shot of Justin with an ice-cream cone. It had a fun, youthful feel to it and in a way showcased the "kid at heart". There was a sweet little puppy named Mocha, who happened upon our shoot with her owner and we knew we had to capture the moment. Justin was quick to share his ice cream with the cute pup, and as you can see from the photos, Mocha had found true love in the strong arms of a stranger. It was one of the highlights of the day!

liced or diced, grilled or blended, there are countless ways to prepare watermelon. With some fruits, half or more is wasted when you throw away the seeds and peel, but you may be surprised to learn that you can use an entire watermelon, including the rind, to make delicious and refreshing dishes. Most people think of watermelon as a sweet, juicy snack perfect for hot summer days, but with its high water content (92 percent), the fruit is more than just tasty. It’s also an ideal way to keep your body hydrated. What’s more, the ability to use the entire fruit makes watermelon one of the most versatile and value-conscious options in the produce department. An average watermelon consists of about 70 percent fruit and 30 percent rind. Hollowed out, the rind is an attractive way to serve any number of recipes, but the rind is actually edible, too, and can be stir-fried, stewed or pickled, or even enjoyed raw. This yummy slaw gets its distinctive crunch from the watermelon rind, which is packed with citrulline and arginine, two compounds that may aid in healthy blood flow. Watermelon is also a flavorful substitute for tomatoes, as shown in this traditional Italian appetizer, and contains higher levels of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable per serving, according to award-winning nutrition author and registered dietitian Elizabeth Somer. Additionally, it lends some sweetness to a spicy salsa and a refreshing twist on a summery salad. You can also try blending watermelon with other fresh fruits for a super smoothie or mixing it up with some adult libations (and don’t forget, you can transform the rind into a mini-keg in minutes; just add a pour spout). Find more ideas for using every bite of fruit, juice and rind at watermelon.org.

FAMILY FEATURES

ntertaining is one thing, but dazzling your guests with an outdoor party sensation is another. Summer can be the best time of year for outdoor parties. From twinkling lights to patterned tablecloths, every detail counts when it comes to impressing family and friends. It may feel like a lot of pressure to live up to expectations, but your party can be both simple and elegant with a few easy tips.

Start early

Early is never early enough when it comes to planning a rock-star summer gath ering. Check to see if you have enough utensils, make sure everything is in place and that there is enough food for your guests. Prepare weeks in advance, if possible, to make sure you have all the materials necessary to throw your dream outdoor party.

Spice up the invitations

The perfect invitations can do three things. First is tell the basics: what, when and where. They can also tell guests what to bring along with them. Of course, invitations should also be appealing to the eye. This is your time to get a little creative and catch guests’ attention before the big event.

Show your style

You want your guests to be as comfortable as possible. Make sure to dress tables and chairs with cushions and tablecloths. Mix it up and show off some of your personal flair with bright colors or fancy patterns. It’s easy to celebrate summer with styles that bring summer vibes to life.

Light up the party

Brighten up the big day or night with some candles, lanterns or sparkling lights. In case of wind or weather, try to purchase covered candles to increase the chances the flame will stay lit. Make sure everyone can see the hard work you have put into the party.

Less mess meals

No one likes messy meals, especially at a summer party. Put together a menu that isn’t stressful on the cook or stressful on your guests to eat. Dropping sauce on a white summer top is a party no-no.

Rain, rain, go away

Always prepare for the worst. If clouds roll in on party day, make sure you’re ready. You can simply move the party indoors at the drop of a hat. Tents can also help keep the party going outdoors in case of precipitation.

Brighten it up

It’s finally summer and that usually means flowers everywhere. Pick out an arrangement and make it the focal point of each table. The bright colors can draw your guests in and make them want to appreciate the beautiful nature around them.

Make your own games

Give the kids something to do and make it fun. While the adults visit, the little ones need something to keep themselves busy. Whether it’s bubbles or water play in the heat, something to mix it up can help keep them occupied.

Jam it out

Keep the music low and cool. There is no need to blast your speakers across the entire yard. Play your favorite jams, but nothing too crazy. The music can really set the mood of the entire party and make or break the atmosphere.

Cool it down

The summer heat is blazing and sometimes being outside can be miserable. Make sure your guests stay comfortable, even in the heat. Lay out handheld fans, lots of water and even some towels. Your guests will want to stay hydrated so they can party on. Find more summer party tips at eLivingToday.com.

W

ith warmer temperatures and sun-filled days arriving, there are few better ways to celebrate the summer season than by firing up the grill. Whether preparing a simple dinner at home or a backyard bash for a crowd, grilling is an easy way to add sear and flavor to your favorite meats and vegetables. The perfect party, regardless of the number of guests, requires proper preparation, attention to detail and a few handy tricks around the grill to serve up delicious options for all in attendance. However, hosting a great get-together doesn’t have to be complicated. To up your grilling game this summer, try these tips from Chef Rick Bayless of Macy’s Culinary Council, a national culinary authority featuring some of the nation’s leading chefs.

Use the Right Tools Aside from fuel, there are several cooking tools that are essential for grilling, including a meat thermometer, long-handled spatula and tongs, grill mitts and a grill brush. Bayless’s go-to gadgets are a basket to prepare whole fish and a cast-iron grill grate to achieve marks and depth of flavor.

Get to Know the Fire When grilling for a party, planning ahead is key, ac cording to Bayless. It can be helpful to know the hot spots of the grill and the distance from grates to flame. Start early if roasting a larger piece of meat, while thinner cuts can be thrown on the grill after the party begins and your guests arrive.

Keep it Simple Bayless recommends a simple menu that features tried and true flavor profiles nearly everyone loves. For appetizers, he suggests grilling vegetables and adding them to guacamole with bacon. Pair with wedges of grilled pita for dipping, which is an unexpected alternative to typical chips. For a main entree, Bayless suggests making meat the star and serving up ribeye steaks marinated in garlic, chilies and fresh lime juice. To cap off the meal, his go-to dessert is grilled cornmeal pound cake, served warm and topped with ice cream, berries or whipped cream. Royal Migration The annual monarch butterfly journey Every year, monarch butterflies embark on a 3,000-mile migration across North America. This feat of endurance lasts eight months, spans three countries and captivates people worldwide. These graceful pollinators rely on milkweed for feeding and reproduction, but over the last decade, a reduction of milkweed habitats has occurred along the butterflies' flight path. The decline of any species can be a threat to natural diversity.

When the weather starts to warm each year, monarchs make their way north from Mexico to begin breeding. Upon arriving in Texas, the butterflies begin to lay eggs on milkweed. Milkweed is the sole food source for monarch larvae, more commonly known as caterpillars. As milkweed plantings have diminished, so has the monarch population.

Beef on Steak Salt

ust ask any dad, he’s sure to agree: a perfectly seasoned steak flame-kissed to perfection is one of the great pleasures of summer grilling. This Father’s Day, you may be able to teach dad a few tricks of your own. Start by selecting a premium-quality steak like those from Omaha Steaks, which are aged at least 21 days to reach the peak of tenderness then flash frozen to stay that way. Then take that guaranteed quality to the grill and try a new method, such as slow, steady smoking, for an ultimate flavor experience. Find tips to make your summer grilling great at omahasteaks.com.

7 Steps to Great Steak Achieve steakhouse-worthy results at home with these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef Grant Hon. 1. Proper preparation. Clean and heat your grill to high. Make sure to oil grates after cleaning. 2. Prepare your steaks. Pat steaks dry and season food before grilling. Use sea salt and freshly cracked pepper or a complete steak seasoning or rub. 3. Searing. Sear steaks over high heat and avoid moving them before they’re fully seared on all sides to protect flavor and juiciness.

Beef on Steak Salt Total time: 1 hour, 20 minutes 1 Omaha Steaks T-Bone (30 ounces) 1 package (3 ounces) Omaha Steaks Original Beef Jerky 3 tablespoons kosher salt Thaw steak 24-48 hours in refrigerator. Using box grater finely shred enough beef jerky to yield 2 tablespoons; mix with kosher salt. Pat steak dry on both sides and season with 1-1 1/2 tablespoons jerky salt. Allow seasoned steak to sit 45 minutes-1 hour, uncovered, at room temperature. Heat gas or charcoal grill to 450 F and oil grates to prevent sticking. Grill to desired doneness based on thickness of steak. Let steak rest 5 minutes. Garnish steak with remaining jerky salt.

GRILLING

THICKNESS

4. Handling steaks on the grill. Use tongs or a spatula to turn meat on the grill; poking with a fork can damage the meat. 5. Controlling your cook. Close grill cover as much as possible while cooking to maintain a temperature around 450 F. This helps lock in flavor and prevent flare-ups. After determining the amount of time you’ll need to reach your desired doneness, use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill 60 percent on the first side then 40 percent after you turn the steak over for an even cook. 6. Juiciness. After grilling, allow steaks to rest tented with foil for 5 minutes between cooking and serving. This lets juices redistribute for the best-tasting and juiciest steak. 7. Finish and enjoy. Garnish steak and serve with style. Add colors, textures and flavors to make perfectly grilled steak even more memorable.

1 Omaha Steaks King Cut T-Bone (48 ounces) 1 tablespoon Omaha Steaks Steak Seasoning 2 tablespoons kosher salt Thaw steak in refrigerator 48-72 hours. Remove steak from vacuum packaging. Prepare dry brine by combining steak seasoning and salt and rubbing into meat on both sides. Place meat on wire rack uncovered; refrigerate 18-24 hours or overnight. Tip: If time doesn’t allow for overnight brining, let rubbed steak sit on wire rack at room temperature at least 1 hour. Cook to desired doneness with preferred indirect grilling method, placing food next to, instead of directly over, the fire. Gas or Charcoal Grill For gas grill, ignite one burner and leave others off. Adjust side burner until thermometer in grill lid reads 400 F. Place smoking box or foil pouch of wood chips over ignited burner. Place steak on grate over burners that are off. Keep grill covered and maintain temperature at 400 F. For charcoal grill, arrange hot coals evenly on one side of charcoal grate. Add wood chunks to coals and allow to smoke 10 minutes. Place drip pan with water in center of grate to keep drippings from burning. Place cooking grate over coals and place steak on grate, centered over drip pan. Place lid on grill. Adjust air vents to bring temperature to 400 F. Face side with filet mignon away from hottest portion of grill; larger side should be facing heat source. Smoke 40-55 minutes for medium-rare 48ounce T-bone steak. Flip steak one time, halfway through cooking time. Verify temperature using kitchen thermometer before removing from grill. If desired, finish exterior of smoked steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes per side once it reaches desired temperature. Allow steak to rest 15 minutes before cutting and serving. Kettle or Bullet Smoker Arrange hot coals evenly on one bottom of smoker grate. Add wood chunks to coals and allow to smoke 10 minutes. Place drip pan with water under rack. Place cooking grate over coals and place steak on cooking grate centered over drip pan. Place lid on smoker. Adjust air vents to maintain 250 F. A medium-rare 48-ounce T-bone steak rested at room temperature for 1 hour prior to cooking should require 1 hour-1 hour and 15 minutes to reach proper temperature, which can be verified with a kitchen thermometer. If desired, finish exterior of smoked steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes per side once it reaches desired temperature. Allow steak to rest 15 minutes before cutting and serving.

Time-Savers for Busy Teens

(Family Features) A break from the regular school routine may be a welcome change, but for many teens, summer is just as busy as the school year. Jobs, athletic activities and social events can keep that so-called “break” jam-packed with action.

T

ime management is essential, but there are some other easy steps teens can take to save time and make sure there’s at least a little room left to kick back and enjoy all that summer has to offer.

1

Get Organized.

Precious minutes tick away while searching for lost keys or phones, or finding the perfect shirt for a night out with friends. Taking a little time to get organized will pay off in the long run. Create a specific place, such as a shelf or basket, to hold items that get used every day so you always know where to look. Also take time to put away laundry and hang clothes, and skip the wasteful rummaging that results from an untidy room and closet.

2

Be Prepared. Even when you’re on the go, taking care of yourself is important. Create a portable pack, whether you’re headed out for a day at the beach or an impromptu camping trip, because pimples are unpredictable and can appear at a moment’s notice. Make sure your skin stays clean and clear by including an easyto-use, mess-free OXY On-The-Go Acne Stick, which is conveniently packaged in a slim, solid form and clinically proven to kill acne-causing bacteria so you

4

Keep a Schedule. Flitting from one spot to the next all summer long can make it tough to keep track of where you’re supposed to be and when. Writing down details like your work schedule and game times can help ensure you never miss a beat. You can also use your schedule to keep track of to-dos like registering for fall classes or chores around the house.

3

Use Screen Time Wisely

Use screen time wisely. It’s easy to get sucked into hours of catching up on social media or pulled into a game where you’re trying to conquer just one more achievement. Avoid getting yourself into a time crunch by simply setting down your phone or controller when you have other obligations. Save the screen time for a break or treat it as a reward for accomplishing a task.

5

Make Time for Meals. Skipping meals isn’t only unhealthy, it’s likely to slow

you down when you get hungry and have to stop for a snack at an inconvenient time. Look for healthy on-thego foods that you can eat in transit, or dedicate a little time one day a week to prepare snacks and meals for the week ahead so you can still stay nourished when you’re in a time crunch.

SUN DOCTOR’S ORDERS: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER

(StatePoint) The summer can really take a toll on skin, when more of it is exposed to sun, bugs and poisonous plants. To keep skin cool, comfortable and irritationfree no matter what conditions you encounter, use these tips from NYCbased dermatologist, Dr. Angela Lamb of Mt. Sinai

STAY HYDRATED

provide temporary relief.

Proper hydration is crucial when you’re busy and active outdoors. It’s also essential for skin health. So be sure to drink plenty of water and eat hydrating fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Lamb suggests treating discomfort right away with a dermatologist-recommended solution that stops the itch and heals the skin. One easy to apply steroidfree treatment to consider is The Itch Eraser, which contains soothing aloe, vitamin E and tea tree oil to calm, nourish and moisturize the skin while reducing redness and inflammation. Available as a gel, spray or cream, it can be used to treat every kind of skin itch, (formulas vary). Find a retailer near you at TheItchEraser.com.

TREAT THE ITCH The itch, hives, rash, redness and irritation associated with insect bites, poison ivy, oak and sumac, and sunburns can be agonizing. However, it’s important not to scratch the affected area and create an open wound susceptible to infection, even though it does

40

DRESS FOR SUCCESS Whether it’s your blanket on the beach or your sundress, fabrics should be well-chosen for the warm weather. For maximum comfort, stick with cotton, linen and other breathable choices. Working out? Look for moisture wicking materials that will dry quickly. Also, be sure to protect your scalp from sunburn with a wide-brimmed hat.

USE COMMON SENSE Avoid burns and itches to begin with by applying plenty of sunscreen and bug spray, and by taking precautions in wooded areas to avoid poison ivy, oak and sumac. While preparation may not always be top of mind when you’re headed outdoors for a day of fun and adventure, being sidelined by these issues is even more of a downer.

KEEP IT COOL

For a happier summer, treat your skin right from head to toe.

Hot water is never great for skin, but after too much sun exposure, it can be particularly irritating. Luckily, it’s easy to turn down the heat on your shower in summer. Use the hot weather as an opportunity to give skin a break and refresh with cooler water in the shower or bath.

And because it offers a range of tools that can be used independent of your smartphone, including an altimeter, barometer, thermometer and compass, it frees up users to fully enjoy their adventures. Other features include a Location Memory app, which enables you to customize maps with markers and text so you can revisit otherwise unmarked spots, such as a great viewpoint or fishing spot. Be Prepared It’s hard to be at one with nature when nature itself is making you miserable. So be prepared for all kinds of weather and climate conditions. If you are camping, patch or replace tents that are worn or torn and bring a tarp for extra protection. Check the weather report for temperature, precipitation and other factors and pack the proper clothing and sleeping bag accordingly. Make sure socks and shoes or hiking boots are in good shape so that long hikes don’t cause you any undue pain. And of course, don’t leave civilization without a first aid kit, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. With a bit of extra preparation, you can take your outdoor adventures higher and farther than ever before.

DRIVE SMART! (StatePoint) Warm weather means more young drivers on the road as they head to summer jobs, parties and embark on road trips. Often, young drivers feel invincible, but they shouldn’t take their safety for granted.

SAFE SUMMER DRIVING TIPS FOR TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS Many experts say driver safety begins with tires, as they are the only thing connecting a car to the road. To help teens and young adults stay safe on the roads this summer and all year long, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) offer these tire safety tips. Check tire condition. Damaged tires can shorten tire life and even cause tire failure. Visually check tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges. If any of these conditions are spotted, or if there are any doubts about the condition of the tires, have them professionally inspected. • Check tire pressure. Proper air pressure improves fuel consumption and helps prevent uneven wear of tires. It also offers drivers better control, which is important for those with less experience behind the wheel. More than 50 percent of American vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association survey.

50

To test pressure, wait until tires are cool -- a minimum of three hours after driving. Then, remove the tire’s valve cap and press the top of a tire pressure gauge firmly on the valve stem. A reading will pop up on the gauge. If the reading is lower than the recommended level, add air and check again. Once the recommended pressure is reached, replace the valve cap. Check tire tread. Proper tread depth helps maintain traction, improves handling of the vehicle and prevents hydroplaning. To check it, insert the edge of a penny into the most worn groove of the tire tread, with Lincoln’s head down and facing the driver. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there is at least a minimum acceptable amount of tread. If the top of his head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace the tire. •Make it a habit. Technology can prepare young drivers for safer driving. For example, the free Tread Wisely app from Cooper Tire and NOYS, informs users how to check their tires using helpful videos and allows them to set automatic monthly reminders to perform tire checks. Other videos on the app instruct young drivers how to change a flat tire, what to do if they are in an accident, and how to handle other issues on the road. The app also includes a unique “I got there” feature, which reminds young drivers to let parents or friends know after they make it to their destination safely, using preloaded text messages. More tire tips and information about the Tread Wisely app can be found at TreadWisely.org. “As a parent, you can’t help but worry,” says race car driver Johnny Unser, whose teen daughter Loni uses the Tread Wisely app. “However, you can give your kids the tools and information they need to succeed out there on the road.”

First Time Fur Mom By Dawn McCarthy

Depending on the type of person you are when the word domestic pet comes up the first thing usually thought of is dog. Dogs are loyal animals that if treated properly love their owners unconditionally. But why do we consider them “Man’s Best Friend” when they’re just animals? PBS states that the heritage of dogs traces directly to that of the gray wolf, meaning that many of the biological behaviors exhibited in wolfs are transferred directly to dogs, for example wolfs are primarily pack animals meaning they hunt in packs and are extremely loyal to each other. They use their numbers to survive in the wild and are very feral because it is necessary for their survival, however dogs are also pack animals that have been domesticated, so while

they do not have a need for that kill or be killed instinct that is so common in wolves they are still fiercely loyal to those they consider part of their pack i.e. humans. So, since “Man’s Best Friend “is considered the dog, and it’s Father’s Day, let me introduce you too, my fur kids dog Dad , Tim. As you know from my past articles, Josie was a rescue, and it was Tim’s brother Mike who was out late night working who found the box of puppies in the trash. Just like any animal, dogs have their special people that are part of their pack, that they just react to differently when they come home or they just see them coming.

When Josie hears Tim, or maybe it’s his smell, the tail starts to wag, she lets out a little wine and can’t wait for him to pick her up if she has not already jumped into his car to greet him. Tim has always loved dogs and Yes, he is this big guy as you can see by the photos , holding and loving a little 17lbs “premium blend”. He and his family have always had dogs, and Josie holds a special place in his heart. She has him wrapped around her little paw, you could say. They have a special bond, you can see and feel. He like me, has no children yet, so like manythe fur kids become like your kids. Josie is such a lucky little dog that you can find her by his side shopping at the Nike outlet stores, to just going for rides in the car. Her favorite past time is at the park playing ball, and he can throw the ball the farthest so she always loves when he stops by to play.

52

Any relationship with an animal that a female or male shares with their pet is always special to watch and see they type of person they can be…good or bad. Seeing a guy, who loves his dog, is good to them, cares for them, is something special, and has shown me a lot about my best friend and Josie’s Dad. So, a very happy Fathers’ Day to all the Dads out there and the Dog Dad’s too who help, love and support the fur members in the family. xoxo,

Dawn

HEALTH7 signs you're not as healthy as

you think Let's face it, we all feel tired and worn down by the trials and tribulations of life itself. But there are some red flags that many people write off as simply part and parcel of the human experience, when they could be something more serious. Take a note of the following, then, and if you see warning lights we recommend seeing a doctor. Poor sleep pattern Sleep is about getting all-round rest, and is vital if you're going to fend of illness. Often if we're having difficulty nodding off it's due to the amount of the hormone cortisol in our body, so basically try to destress before bed to combat this. Apple-shape Many people are carrying a few extra pounds around with them, but did you know one type of overweight is more dangerous than the other. Those with apple curves- more fat around their waist and belly- are at a higher risk of heart disease. Constant exhaustion This is particularly difficult to pin-point in the modern world because everything is so intense it's any wonder we have any energy left, ever. However, if tiredness is becoming chronic then it might be worth checking it out- from thyroids to burnt out adrenal glands it could be a problem that needs to be addressed.

54

Dark urine throughout the day A heavy night's boozing will lead to some pretty nasty toilet trips, but your urine should really be as clear as possible, particularly later in the day. The darker it is the more dehydrated you are, so start by guzzling water, and if that doesn't work look into it further. Snoring Sleep apnea has gone from little-known condition to all-overthe-papers in the last couple of years, and the evidence isn't up for discussion. Although snoring is usually benign, it can be the sign of this sleep disorder which could lead to hypertension and heart failure. Incessant itching Rashes and skin irritations are par for the course of doing many things in many situations, however it could be another important warning sign. Liver disease is incredibly hard to detect until it's often too late, but excessive itching does occur in some sufferers.

Cheilitis, or cracked lips, could mean you have a deficiency in B vitamins, with the lack of B12 a culprit in particular. Cracked lips and corners of the mouth Cheilitis, or cracked lips, could mean you have a deficiency in B vitamins, with the lack of B12 a culprit in particular. This is pretty easy to rectify with supplements or a change of diet, including the use of more nutritional yeast where possible.

7 Tips for Summer Gardening Success

Photos courtesy of Getty Images

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen temperatures peak and the summer sun shines for long hours throughout the day, it can put a burden on your garden and the plants growing in it. Some steps may be easier to take than others, but there are ways to keep your greenery thriving even in relentlessly scorching heat. Of course, having the right tools and a personal commitment to gardening are a couple of the first and most important rules, but these tips can serve as simple, helpful ways to keep your garden growing strong.

Check equipment. Before getting carried away with digging, tilling or watering, be sure that all of the tools for these jobs and others are ready for use. Inspect hoses and spigots for leaks and holes, ensure that hand tools are sturdy and monitor your inventory of important items like soil to make sure you have enough for the tasks ahead.

Know what to grow. Instead of gardening on a hunch and wasting water or other precious resources on plants that simply don’t grow well or bloom in the sum mer, research which flowers, plants and bushes will succeed. Local experts who sell seeds and bulbs can likely help guide you while you shop for your next plant.

Water early. By watering in the morning, you can achieve multiple objectives. First, you won’t be stuck sweating it out when the sun is directly overhead during the day while trying to hydrate your plants. Second, soaking the soil early can help plants stay hydrated throughout the hottest parts of the day, rather than allowing them to dry out in the heat and attempting to rehydrate them later.

Mix nutrients with water. Adding fertilizer to water can help balance out deficiencies in certain minerals, depending on the quality of your soil, especially if you aren’t able to water frequently.

Keep potted plants cool. When sitting in the sun, certain types of pots may absorb heat, some times causing the plants within to dry out and become overheated. Lightly mulching the pots can help, as can placing the pot in a saucer full of moist sand.

Add shade. Another way to keep potted plants, and all other plants for that matter, cool is to set up a canopy or shade cloth. Especially if your garden is subject to nearly all-day sunlight, it’s helpful to give it some shade at the hottest parts of the day with a canopy directly above.

Protect against pests. While it can be difficult, keeping pests and insects out of your garden can help keep both you and your plants healthy. Repellants are an obvious option, but some may negatively affect the growth of plants. Instead, practice habits like maintaining healthy soil and getting rid of standing water (which can attract mosquitoes) to actively deter insects. By staying committed and following these tips among others, you can keep your garden lush and growing even during the summer’s hottest days. The Annual Monarch Butterfly Journey

E

very year, monarch butterflies embark on a 3,000-mile migration across North America. This feat of endurance lasts eight months, spans three countries and captivates people worldwide. These graceful pollinators rely on milkweed for feeding and reproduction, but over the last decade, a reduction of milkweed habitats has occurred along the butterflies’ flight path. Environmentalists and butterfly lovers have taken notice of the monarchs’ dwindling numbers. BASF, a company that serves farmers and agricultural customers, launched Living Acres in 2015. Living Acres is a research initiative designed to help farmers establish milkweed beds in noncropland areas. Farmers and landowners can play an important role in helping increase monarch populations simply by starting a milkweed garden. With employee-tended monarch gardens, BASF is also sustaining butterflies at its manufacturing sites.

As summer approaches, caterpillars begin their metamor phoses, hatching and transforming into vivid orange and black butterflies. Once mature, the monarchs continue their journey north ward, passing over cool valleys and prairieland. Monarchs look for resting places in open plains, often settling in beds of milkweed alongside cornfields, gardens, playgrounds and rural roadsides. Some of the most popular flight paths include the Corn Belt and Interstate 35, a corridor that runs from Texas to Minnesota. Legislators implemented a federal plan to create habitable space along highways for monarchs by planting milkweed in ditches. This initiative offers food and shelter for weary butterflies and provides nursery sites for monarch eggs. Monarchs then begin winging their way south to the oyamel fir forests of Mexico. They spend their winters there, crowded together on the tree branches for warmth, which can appear to transform the trees into blazing orange clouds. When warm weather returns the following year, monarchs resume their migration northward and continue the cycle of breeding the next monarch generation. Establishing your own milkweed habitat is a great way to get involved and make an impact on the continued reign of the monarch butterfly. For planting tips, visit Living Acres at Facebook.com/BASFLivingAcres.

How 6 Rock-Climbing Techniques Can Be Your Secret Weapon In Life There are times when desire and commitment drive us out of any comfort zone we could possibly imagine. Manley Feinberg II thought about that fact one day as he stared at a wall of rock in front of him in the Aksu Valley, one of the last frontiers of big-wall rock climbing, located in the country of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Feinberg, a business leader, motivational speaker and author of Reaching Your Next Summit (www.VerticalLessons.com), was about to take on one of the greatest challenges in this adventure sport. But before he could do it, he had to put faith in a Russian colleague named Dima who suffered a seizure only hours before the climb. Dima served as Feinberg’s belayer, the one who uses a small metal device known as a belay to 58

control the friction of a climber’s rope and save him if he begins to fall. "The belay allows climbers to safely accomplish what seems impossible," Feinberg says. "The same belay principle can be your secret weapon in life where someone can help you stretch your own comfort zone and reach toward higher summits while encouraging you and saving you from the falls you will inevitably encounter." Feinberg says the business leaders he often advises and anyone else looking to accomplish lofty goals can use their own belay system and reach beyond their comfort zone. He offers these six tips for doing just that:

Get a safety system in place. Climbers, like anyone looking to accomplish big things, expect to fall on the way to reaching their summit and that’s why they use a belayer. "Before beginning the climb to your new goal, you should have processes in place to allow for your inevitable mistakes." Feinberg says. "Your own personal belayer that provides a safety system for when you fall." Be sure to have just enough rope. A belayer must feed a climber just enough rope to allow him to move in a desired direction. You’ll want partners in business, and in life, who give you enough rope to climb and room to grow. Avoid too much rope. A partner also shouldn’t give you too much slack because when you fall, the impact is going to be even greater for both of you. Don’t let your belayer hold you

back. A belayer must feed you just enough rope as you move along. However, they can hold you up if they aren’t giving you enough slack to move. Identifying a belayer who is holding you back in life and disconnecting from him or her can be one of the most courageous and productive actions you will ever take. Find a partner whose actions are immediate. When you fall, which you will if you try to accomplish goals beyond your comfort zone, your partners must be fully present for you, just as a belayer must lock off the rope right away when a climber begins to fall. Focus on reassurance after the fall. A good partner will help you recover and get back at your endeavor as soon as possible. "When executed consistently, the belay lesson will have a

dramatic impact on your life," says Feinberg, who recommends those looking to accomplish bigger goals should start their day with two questions: "Who do I need on belay today?" In other words, who can support me to help me accomplish my goals? And, "Who will I belay today?" What individual needs my support the most today?

About the Author: Manley Finberg II (www.VerticalLessons.com) is an awardwinning international keynote speaker, business leader and author. During his career, he helped Build-a-Bear Workshop grow from 40 stores to more than 400 stores worldwide, while growing sales to more than $474 million, and landing the company on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® List four years in a row. In his book, Reaching Your Next Summit, Feinberg applies leadership lessons learned in business and adventures to life’s daily challenges.

MIAH'S MESSAGE "HUMBLE AND KIND" THIS MONTH'S MESSAGE IS INSPIRED BY MY MOM'S RING BACK TONE. Now anyone who knows my mom would think that her tone would be a TLC, WHAM! or Go-Go’s hit, SURPRISE…it is “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw. My mom received a phone call last week and the caller asked her what song was playing. The caller said that she was having a bad day and that song lifted her heart. The definition of the words Humble and Kind are: Humble- Having or showing a modest or low estimate of one's own importance. Kind- Having or showing a friendly, generous, and considerate nature.

NO MATTER WHERE I GO or who I encounter, being HUMBLE and KIND to all has made my experiences just that much better. In May, I was in Paris, France with my family (PS…best birthday present EVER!!), before I left, I researched the French culture and learned phrases that I knew would be helpful so I could communicate. I must say, that I was a little nervous because everyone here in the states said that the French don’t like Americans. UNTRUE…

60

While in France I noticed that if I respected their customs, lifestyles and was kind then they returned the kindness tenfold. I walked into a lot of shops, museums, cafes and patisseries (my little brother’s favorite food is now the croissant) and upon entering with a smile and Bonjour, it started a friendly dialogue. People were more willing to speak English and help me. I wanted to share some things I love with the people over there.

My mom did some research and found that peanut butter and honey are commodities that are expensive in France. Of course, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups was an easy choice and being from the Beehive state why not share honey sticks. I had so much fun handing out Reese’s Cups to the kids over there. They tore into them eating the paper on the cups and all! Everyone was excited with a grateful, Merci beaucoup!!!

While, in Amsterdam we were waiting for the train. A worker was singing to herself while we waited for the next train. Royal, my little brother, whispered to me, “she is a good singer.” I told him to tell her and he did just that. He walked right up to her and told her she was a really good singer. An immediate smile came to her face, she put her hand over her heart, said thank you and started to cry. The smallest gestures make the biggest impact on others. My mom has always taught me that when someone asks me a question and I don’t understand it or can’t hear them, I am to say Excuse Me, I am NEVER allowed to say WHAT?

To some people they may think that is crazy, but I can immediately hear in their voice the mutual respect that I have just gained. My little brother will hold the door open for 100 people if we let him. What is the moral of my message this month? I know that sometimes it is hard to be humble and kind to someone who is not being nice to you or even when you are not in a good mood. But, please take the time to stay grounded, be kind to all you meet and stay humble, as everyone is important and valuable!

CAN YOU DIE FROM TOO MUCH CAFFEINE? Too much caffeine caused the death of a 16-year-old high school student from South Carolina who collapsed during class last month, according to the county coroner. Davis Allen Cripe died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia. During an arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body, and lack of blood flow affects the brain, heart and other organs. The teen consumed three caffeine-laced drinks -- a cafe latte, large Diet Mountain Dew and an energy drink -- in a two-hour period before collapsing in his classroom at Spring Hill High School on April 26, Watts said. (Source: CNN) So where does this tragic news leave adult java lovers?

How much caffeine can I drink a day? "Most people can safely take in about 400 milligrams of caffeine daily or about 4 cups of coffee," says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O., a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine. He adds that, “the limit varies from person to person.” It’s difficult to assign an exact amount for everyone because people can have different sensitivities or reactions to caffeine based on age, medical history, and tolerance. However, there is enough research available to make a recommendation based on an individual’s weight.

daily dose of 400 mg. To see what this means for you, check out the caffeine in some of these common drinks: Starbucks Coffee (16 fl oz): 320 mg caffeine 5-hour energy (1.93 fl oz): 207 mg caffeine Dunkin Donuts regular (16 fl oz): 203 mg caffeine Starbucks Latte (16 fl oz): 150 mg caffeine Coffee, brewed (8 fl oz): 133 mg caffeine Red Bull Energy Shot (2 fl oz): 80 mg caffeine Red Bull (8 fl oz): 80 mg caffeine Tea (8 fl oz): 53 mg caffeine But how, exactly, can the world's most popular drug kill? Like other stimulants, caffeine raises blood pressure, boosts heart rate and temporarily shrinks blood vessels. Dr. Calapai explains that, “In excess, the effects can be deadly by causing a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular-related problem. Researchers think daily caffeine intake can increase the risk of coronary heart disease, but the results so far have been inconclusive.” It’s also important to realize that medical conditions can affect sensitivity to caffeine. “If you have anxiety, panic disorder, heart arrhythmia, high blood pressure, diabetes, take medication or have any sort of medical condition, then you may tolerate less caffeine and should speak to a doctor,” says Dr. Calapai. There are “caffeine overdose symptoms” that are important to watch for. These include: Jitters, Restlessness, and Nervousness Increased heartbeat Nausea Anxiety Heart palpitations (cardiac arrhythmia) Insomnia Sweating Dizziness Vomiting Cardiac arrest
