3. STRAWBERRIES

Dr. Christopher Calapai DO, an antiaging and stem cell expert and long time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team, tells us how to fight post-flight dehydration with foods!

5 Foods to Defy the Post-Flight ‘Dehydration Face’ Fhighourth of July weekend in front of us means it’s officially summer and most people are gearing up for their vacations. For many, that will include air travel, and possibly a long haul flight. You know the drill: they give you some peanuts, the drink cart makes a couple of rounds, they bring you your sad little tray of airplane food and then before you know it, it’s wheels down. Your flight attendant hands you a moist towlette and you hope it’ll revive your dried skin and make you look a little less haggard but it does neither, and you chastise yourself for not downing more little cups of water. But drinking water on a plane is a double-edged sword; if you don’t your entire epidermis dries up; if you do, your lower body retains the liquid. So what’s a non-ankleswell-enthusiast to do? 1. WATERMELON

2. CUCUMBERS

“Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods there are,” says Dr. Calapai “I’s a great alternative to plane snacks which have large amounts of sodium, which in turn make you more dehydrated.” Pack big thick slices in a large plastic baggie and take them in your handbag, they won’t be taken away at TSA and will help you avoid the salty peanuts.

“Cucumbers are about 96 percent water,” says Calapai “They also contain no saturated fat or cholesterol and are high in Vitamin B6 which helps in the production of serotonin which is the brain chemical that controls mood.” You can slice them or cube them and also bring them along in a baggie or small container. Try making small cucumber-watermelon bites, they are pretty delicious!

www.drcalapai.net

When the airplane cookies come around say ‘no thanks’ and reach for some strawberries instead! “Strawberries have the highest water content of any berry, 92 percent to be exact,” shares Calapai “You can enjoy the tartsweet flavor without consuming too much sugar.” 4. SOUP If you’re the type of person that needs an actual meal to feel satisfied bring along a Ramen Cup of Noodles in your favorite flavor, it’s not TSA restricted. When you’re over the snacks and are ready to have lunch/dinner ask the flight attendant for hot water and voila! Soup! 5. COCONUT WATER Ok, so you can’t totally avoid drinking liquids! “Coconut water is low in calories and high in naturally occurring hydration replenishing electrolytes, which regular water does not contain. It’s a better option than sports drinks which have artificial flavors and more calories,” advises Dr. Calapai. After you’re past security grab a bottle of coconut water from any of the airport mini-marts.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE BEST BIKINI SKIN ZONE. The quest for a perfect bikini zone is for many women, an epic process of trial and error. The goal of course is to achieve a perfect, bump-free, babysmooth bikini area. With so many hair removal options available it can take forever to find a routine that works. For many women laser hair removal has become the be all end all option to permanently remove unwanted bikini area hair, however it’s important to get the facts and find someone reputable to do it.

JENYA TITOVA, INSTRUCTOR TO ASTHETIC MENTORS AND PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT TO BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, DR. LEONARD HOCHSTEIN OF HOCHSTEIN MEDSPA IN MIAMI, FLORIDA DISHES OUT THE DOS AND DON'TS FOR PERFECT BIKINI ZONE SKIN, WHETHER YOU SHAVE, WAX OR LASER. CHOOSE WHAT'S RIGHT

Shaving · Do keep the razor sharp and new! Replace your razor every two to three weeks. · Do go slow! Ingrowns and irritation comes with quick motion. You want to go slower around the bikini area given angles and harder to reach areas. Slide the razor slowly and irritation will lessen. · “Pay attention to how you skin reacts when shaving. Do you get bumps and redness? If so you need an exfoliating and moisturizing routine,” suggests Jenya Titova. Laser Hair Removal · “You really want to shave the day before,” advises Jenya Titova whose skincare expertise spans over a decade. “The laser can locate the follicles easier when shaved. It’s very important to use a clean, new razor to avoid having any lingering bacteria that could cause contact dermatitis (a delayed allergic reaction) after your laser treatment,”

she adds. · Avoid coffee. Or anything with caffeine, really, it has been said to increase sensitivity. · Be rested and hydrated. Your pain receptors will be higher if you're fatigued and dehydrated. · Ask your technician to try different paces. Each technician has his or her own technique. Some perform in quick bursts, while others use a slow, continuous pace. One technique may feel better on your skin than the next. · Avoid tanning. Both tanning beds and the sun can be harmful after exposing your skin to laser, avoid both and put on SPF! “In warm weather climates, this is always a concern because women are always outside at the beach or pool. If you’re getting laser hair removal avoid the sun entirely for at least 3 days before your laser treatment,” cautions Ms. Titova.

Waxing The key to successful waxing is skin prep a week before the waxing is scheduled. Exfoliation and moisturizing are essential. “You want the skin to be supple and not dry. It’s much less painful to wax skin that is moist as opposed to dry,” explains Ms. Titova. Find the right wax. Hard wax is usually a honey color and is peeled by the technician using her hand, as opposed to the paper strips used to remove soft wax. It is commonly said that hard wax is less painful and better for skin. There is also sugar wax, and many other varieties that boast different benefits. Make sure your hair is long enough. “This is often a downside to waxing. Hair should be at least ¼ of an inch long for wax to catch it. Many women never allow hair to grow this long making waxing a more difficult option especially if hair is coarse,” advises Ms. Titova. Don’t shave in between sessions. eart-healthy foods can play a role in healthy aging. Whether you enjoy them by the handful as a refreshing snack or use them to add color, crunch and a touch of sweetness to a meal, grapes are a heart-healthy option that make eating better easy. Grapes of all colors – red, green and black – are a natural source of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols. At just 90 calories per serving, they also contain no fat, no cholesterol and virtually no sodium. With a juicy burst of flavor, grapes show how simple it can be to make good-for-youdishes that also taste great. Even though California grapes are a snacking staple in most kitchens, you may not realize how versatile they can be for cooking. Grapes and Brain Health

A grape-enriched diet helped protect against metabolic brain decline in Alzheimer’s-related areas of the brain, according to research from the University of California-Los Angeles. The pilot study, funded by the California Table Grape Commission, was conducted among people with early memory decline and showed that subjects who didn’t consume grapes exhibited significant metabolic decline in these critical regions. Additionally, those consuming the grape-enriched diet showed beneficial changes in regional brain metabolism that correlated to improvements in cognition and working memory performance, according to a report published by Experimental Gerontology.

or most homes, there’s one room that serves as the hub of all activity. From preparing mouthwatering meals to entertaining a house full of guests to grabbing a few minutes to relax with a mug of steaming coffee, the kitchen is the place where it all happens. That’s why such careful planning is necessary when you set out to redesign this essential living space.

26 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

Layout

Arguably the most important decision is the overall layout of the kitchen, defining which appliances will go where and what architectural details – such as windows and doors – need to be integrated into the plans. Determining how many and what kind of cabinets you need can be even more complex, and contemporary design can help open up plenty of options. In the past, cabinetry was fairly straightforward. Lower cabinets were topped with a counter, then a backsplash and a matching set of cabinets above. These days, design is far less predictable, and introducing variety through the cabinetry is a savvy designer’s trick to grab attention. The comprehensive product lines from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. make it easy to mix diverse finishes, door styles and wood species to blend different design techniques while achieving an eclectic but cohesive feel. For example, you could pair complementary styles and colors for the upper and lower cabinets, or create some contrast between the perimeter and island to capture an on-trend, eye-catching look that is anything but boring. You can also rely on varying heights and sizes to create more visual variety.

A more eclectic kitchen style brings plenty of character on its own, so a color palette that lets the architectural and structural details really shine is more appropriate than bold splashes of vibrant color. That said, there’s still plenty of room to create visual interest and integrate multiple hues to give the room extra depth and charm. Subtle shades of gray may be just the ticket. Gray cabinetry has grown in popularity in recent years. In fact, more than two-thirds of designers believe gray is the fastest growing color trend in cabinetry, according to data from RICKI Research. The Nature Collection from Wellborn Cabinet is one way to achieve this look. The line of gray paints and stains is available in one stain option and two paint options, allowing for nearly endless possibilities, especially when you consider integrating a standout color to make a feature like an island countertop really pop.

Function

While the exterior of the cabinets is what you (and your guests) will appreciate when they first enter the room, it’s what lies hidden behind doors that makes a good kitchen truly great. After spending so much time creating the perfect look, your kitchen demands the right tools and enhancements to make it functional. The trick is to look for unexpected ways to add practical performance. For example, a shallow drawer is an ideal location for kitchen knives so you can free up counter space from a bulky butcher

block. A slotted wood knife drawer is the perfect solution to securely hold each of your knives and help prevent dull blades and cut fingers. If you’re stuck with an awkward space, look for creative ways to make it work for you. For example, a narrow gap could be closed with a unique pull-out cabinet, such as Wellborn Cabinet’s Base Canister Organizer Pullout Cabinet, which holds three small, one medium and three large containers. The quart containers are included with this canister organizer when ordered direct from the company.

Storage

Keeping what’s inside your cabinets organized only adds to a newly redesigned kitchen’s enhanced function. One oftenoverlooked solution is using drawers for pots and pans. The ability to store each pot with its corresponding lid eliminates the jumbled stacks and hard-to-reach pieces common in many kitchens. Extra-deep drawers, paired with drawer storage options provide sectioned, adjustable options depending upon size of pots and pans. Another option: an adjustable wood board peg system that lets you customize the peg locations to fit your pots and pans just right. Find more inspiration and planning tools to create the contemporary kitchen of your dreams at wellborn.com.

GOING GRAY Gray may be neutral, but today’s designers know that the subtle hue is anything but dull. Follow these tips to help make the most of this versatile shade. 1. Although a sleek and modern design may be the first look you envision with gray, you can also create warm, cozy spaces by using materials like wood and rich tones such as red, yellow and orange. 2. Avoid overdoing bold accent colors, which can overpower the gray and make a room seem busy. Rely on lighting and white accents, such as countertops and backsplashes, to add some brightness to the room. 3. If the idea of going all gray is overwhelming, opt instead to do a statement piece in gray, such as an island or other feature element you want to showcase.

FIREWORKS & TREATS FOR YOUR DOG THIS SUMMER

#

FIRST TIME FUR MOM

Like many across the country, you may be planning to have a festive Fourth of July. Along with barbeques, and a day at the beach/pool with our fur kids, no July holiday celebration would be complete without enjoying the fireworks that celebrate the birth of our nation. If you are considering staying at home, or planning a get-together with friends and family, you may want to go check out your local professional fireworks display, but don’t forget to plan for your pets safety. Did you know that the 4th of July is the date with the highest number of runaways each year of pets. This holiday is a fun celebration of independence for humans; however, it's not as enjoyable for our canine family members. Over 1/3 of dogs in the United States have some sort of noise aversion. The bright lights, parties, and loud noises can be overwhelming and frightening for them. Pets are terrified of fireworks, and often panic at the loud whizzes and bangs they produce and will run away to find shelter. How do you keep your pet safe? Have a plan…in my area many pet facilities, veterinary clinics off sleep overs, where they will be surrounded by other fur friends and be watched over closely. You can also bring over to family and friends that may be staying in to watch fireworks on TV that can keep a close eye on them, or look into products like the Snuggle Puppy or Kitten if you are going to leave them home so they don’t feel alone. Also, don’t leave your pet in the car! Not only is July one of the hottest months of the year, pets will want to run and seek shelter and being confined in the car can cause not only heat stroke, but severe trauma. My fur kid Josie will be with me again this year. Although I am truly lucky that many loud noises don’t frighten Lastly, I am a huge fan of http://iheartdogs.com and they have a I hearts website for cats, horses etc too! If you are not familiar with this site-check it out and I think you will find a ton of great information, not to mention some great gift ideas to show your love for your pet.

Since it is the Summer-I found this article on “12 Seasonal Fruits & Veggies to share with your dog this summer”. Being a #FirstTimeFurMom, I had no idea you could give your pet some of these great foods. I hope you find it as helpful as I did. Let me know your thoughts or anything they should have added to the list!

The best part, these images are from the Instagram accounts of There are celebrities who seem these gorgeous ladies so the to get better with age and photos are current and in many maintain their looks while cases, unretouched. Let’s begin. others seem to be at war with aging. From lip injections and fillers that make faces look oddly Salma Hayek, age 50. distorted; to full face lifts that Latin women with olive lead to slanted eyes and an complexions age very well and expression-less appearance, we Salma certainly fits into this can’t help to notice when category. from falling and to keep eyebrows in their natural position,” he adds. “You want to maintain your natural features and knowing the right moisturizer, make-up, plus sticking to a healthy diet, helps to maintain a youthful glow from the inside out. To achieve a look like Salma’s, most women would have to go the route of a mini face lift in their 40’s which offers a more natural look for 6-10 years without the distortion of excessive fillers,” he adds.

2. Kris Jenner, age 61.

While the Power “Momager” admits to having cosmetic procedures, she’s transformed herself into an elegant, age appropriate grandmother. Kris Jenner is on record saying she’s had a facelift, uses fillers yet, her look is sophisticated and not at all scary.

“She looks great at 61. Her skin is radiant, her face has expression, there’s great symmetry and her features are soft. She is an excellent example of someone who has embraced surgery to improve her eyelids with blephorplasty, her face with a facelift, and fillers in a very conservative fashion to get a nice, natural, ageless look.” explains Dr. Brandow.

3. Cindy Crawford, age 51.

Cindy Crawford’s look is iconic. She knows this and makes sure she keeps things as authentic as possible. “With Cindy, it’s all about those classic eyebrows and lips. Both have been beautifully maintained. Her eyebrows aren’t freakishly high. They look the same as they did in the 90’s. Her lips aren’t any different either. A lot of women over inject their lips distorting their shape and lose their uniqueness. The idea is to preserve, not change,” suggests Dr. Brandow. “Again, women often go too far with fillers leading to a puffy look when they can achieve a more natural look with a mini facelift which lessens the need for the fillers making the mini facelift a more costeffective option over time,” he adds.

4. Jennifer Lopez, age 47.

Jennifer Lopez is another Latina who looks at father time and gives him a wink. Her body is amazing and you can tell she has a healthy lifestyle. “I have patients in their 30’s saying they hope they look like J-Lo when they reach their late 40’s which is why they are getting procedures now. Jennifer Lopez is truly the hardest working woman in show biz who looks like she sleeps full 8 hours every night a very important part of the anti-aging regimen,” Dr. Brandow advises. It is possible that she does minimal things such as Botox or fillers, but in a very conservative way.”

4 women age they lose volume in their lips. So, it is important to keep lip injections subtle and factor the overall shape of the mouth,” advises Dr. Brandow.

5. Jennifer Anniston, age 48.

When you see re-runs of the hit 90’s TV show Friend’s, you can easily compare a 26-year-old Anniston in her role as Rachel Greene, to how she looks two decades later. You immediately can see how Jennifer Anniston has aged with grace. “She is another laid-back celebrity who ages with elegance. Her body is toned and strong and her face looks fresh and natural. As

Time-Saving Tips to Get Up and Get Glowing (Family Features) If you wish you had more time to get ready in the morning, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are plenty of shortcuts you can take during your morning routine that can give you more time to sleep, eat or just make it to work on time without having to sacrifice looking anything but your best.

Leading beauty and lifestyle personality Laura Lee, who has more than 4 million followers across her social media platforms, provides these time-saving tips to improve your morning ritual. With Lee’s recommendations, you’ll be out the door and glowing faster than you think. Get everything together the night before. Get yourself prepared for the day ahead by laying out everything you’ll need the night before. Picking out your clothing, laying out makeup, gathering your car keys and any other essentials, packing your lunch and charging your cellphone before you go to sleep can save you time when you get in a morning crunch MULTITASK IN THE SHOWER. Turn the tedious, time-consuming tasks of applying sunless tanner and moisturizing into something quick, seamless and simple by incorporating it into your daily shower routine. The easiest way, according to Lee, is to use a product like Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin Moisturizer, which is available in in fair-tomedium and medium-to-tan shades and made to be applied to wet skin right after you shower to lock in moisture and gradually build natural-looking color. After showering, simply turn off the water and apply the moisturizer to wet skin then towel off as usual. Natural-looking color gradually develops in 3-5 days.

”As someone who is constantly on social media, one of the first questions I always get asked is ‘How do I get my signature glow?’” Lee said. “A great look doesn’t end with your makeup, it goes beyond highlighting and contouring the face. To get a head-to-toe flawless look, I use Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin Moisturizer. It’s so easy to use and saves me a ton of time.” For more information, find Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin Moisturizers at mass retailers and drugstores nationwide or visit Jergens.com

STOMP OUT BULLYING THIS

By Miah Green

Summer is the perfect time to learn how you can be an anti-bullying crusader. Bullying doesn’t just happen during the school year, but all year long. Bullying has not only affected me personally, but little brother and millions of other kids. What is Bullying? Bullying is defined as “intentionally aggressive, usually repeated” verbal, social, or physical behavior aimed at a specific person or group of people. The majority of bullying still takes place at school. Did you know? Each day in the US 160,000 kids stay home from school to avoid being bullied. To put it in perspective that would fill up the top two NFL stadiums, Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, 1 in 10 teens drop out of school due to repeated bullying.

Verbal and social bullying are the most common types of bullying. According to www.stopbullying.gov 70.6 percent of all kids are being bullied verbally or socially in some way or another. Verbal bullying includes things like spreading rumors or being mean about one’s race, gender, religion, etc. while social bullying includes leaving someone out on purpose, hurting someone’s reputation or relationship. Boys tend to be physically aggressive and impulsive when bullying. They attack those kids that show weakness and enjoy the status a fight brings them. While girls bully indirectly by using verbal assaults, gossiping and are overall “Mean Girl” behavior. Girls disguise their bullying and act in more passive aggressive ways, which makes girl-on-Begirl bullying harder to detect. Approximately 30 percent of young people admit to bullying others. I have been an Anti-Bullying Ambassador for Crown C.A. R.E.S. (Creating A Respectful Environment in School) in Utah for two years. I speak in classrooms, do projects about hurtful words, and teach how kind acts and compliments can make a positive impact on someone’s day. From inviting a new student to eat lunch with you to picking up someone’s dropped pencils and anything between will help others follow your example and start the path to creating a kind atmosphere in and out of your school.

Start today and play with a new kid in your neighborhood or a simple wave and “hello” to your neighbor as your ride your bike. At school, students learn by watching just as they learn by doing. Observing the actions of others influences hoe they respond. Think about what message your behavior communicates. Be a role model TODAY and EVERYDAY!

FAMILY FEATURES

n engagement is a moment to cherish and celebrate, for sure, but it also signals the beginning of a whirlwind of activity leading up to your big day. While the task list is long, if you tackle your wedding planning one step at a time, you can create the wedding of your dreams with the flair of a professional.

Set a budget Although looking at something as practical as numbers can feel like a jolt from the euphoria of celebrating your engagement, starting your planning from a realistic vantage point will pay off in the long run. You’ll be able to avoid disappointment by simply skipping over venues or caterers you can’t afford, and knowing how you stand financially can ease some of the stress that goes along with planning. As you create your budget, be sure to take into account the big elements (venue, dress, cake, photographer, etc.) and the smaller details, too (guest book, bridal party gifts, flower girl basket, etc.). As you allocate your budget across the categories, think about the features that matter most – the aspects of your wedding that make you most excited. It may be a to-die-for dress or an amazing meal to share with your guests – it’s your wedding, so it’s all up to you (and your beloved, of course).

Explore your style Whether you’ve dreamed of your big day since you were a little girl or you’re newly contemplating your dream wedding, this is your chance to create an event that captures your personality and style. Today’s weddings are far less traditional than decades and generations past, so the sky is nearly the limit for orchestrating a day that reflects your own version of wedding bliss. You’ll need begin with some basics, such as how big the event will be (25 guests or 300?) and where you want to be married (your hometown, his or someplace else entirely?). Then think about whether you want a casual or formal affair, and what style best reflects you (modern or classic, rustic or retro?). If you don’t know for sure, there are plenty of magazines and online resources to lend inspiration and ideas.

Determine a timeline Lots of details need to come together before you can set a firm date, but knowing approximately when you want to hold your wedding is a good starting point for most couples. This gives you some flexibility to work around venue availability, conflicts for those you want in your wedding party and so on. Determine a season or even a month and then start honing in on the exact date. Once you have a final date set and confirm the location, you can work backward to determine milestones such as mailing invitations, providing menu selections and confirming your floral order.

Dive into the details Once you have your preliminary homework done, it’s time to dive into the real fun. Extend formal invites to your wedding party, consider their attire, register for gifts, and interview and hire vendors. Look for ways to make each moment special, such as planning a girls’ day out with your bridal party and loved ones while you shop for a dress. Also remember essential steps like insuring your ring and applying for a passport if you’ll need one for the honeymoon.

WEDDING PLANNING 101

F

irst comes the proposal then comes the wedding planning. There are dozens of decisions that need to be made before it’s time to walk down the aisle, which can be overwhelming for brides and grooms. To help make it less stressful, these tips from Macy’s can help couples through the entire weddingplanning process, from on-trend apparel and accessories for the entire wedding party to all the essentials to create a perfect registry.

Dressing the Ladies When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, the mix-andmatch approach is trending in popularity. Start by deciding on a color palette, such as lilac, champagne and petal pink. Then have each bridesmaid choose her favorite style within that range of hues. Bring it all together by choosing a uniform look for makeup, shoes and accessories. There is no better time to thank the ladies than the morning of the big day. A few thoughtful gifts can go a long way, such as matching robes, tumblers to stay hydrated throughout the day and cosmetic cases to stow makeup essentials.

Dressing the Gents Similar to bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen attire can be dependent on the venue and overall event aesthetic. While a suit can fit the bill for a country club wedding, a city affair may call for the sleek finishes of a tux. Tuxedo accessories, such as cuff links or bow ties,

make great groomsmen gifts and are classic pieces they can use time and time again.

Creating the Perfect Registry When building a registry, it’s never too early to start. People want to give gifts as soon as they know a couple is engaged. Start by taking inventory of what you already have, what you need and what you want to upgrade. It’s also recommended to update the registry regularly so there are enough gifts to choose from, especially if there is an engagement party and bridal shower coming up. To get started, some popular registry items include stand mixers, craft beer glasses, Dutch ovens, bath towels and vacuums. For extra guidance, couples can speak to advisors who can help with the full registry building process at Macy’s stores. 10 back-to-school tips that save time and money 38 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

B

FAMILY FEATURES

ack-to-school season means it’s time to get back to the business of learning. This year you can ace your backto-school shopping excursion with these time- and money-saving steps that can make getting the whole family ready for a new school year a breeze. Start with a list. Walking into the store without a list is an open invitation for impulse buys and forgotten items that end up costing you more time and money with a return trip. Create a thorough list by categorizing all the items you’ll shop for, such as supplies, electronics and clothing. If you want to take an extraorganized approach, try color coding items by the section of the store where you would expect to find them. Set a budget. Knowing what you can afford to spend ahead of time can save regret and returns after you shop. Calculate how much you’ll need to cover all the items your students truly need, then tack on some room for wants. One must-have is a high-quality backpack, like the High Sierra Access Backpack, which includes a dedicated storage area for your child’s laptop, among other features. If your total budgeted expenses exceed your available funds, consider browsing weekly circulars to keep your budget in check. Explore your inventory. It may be buried under a summer’s worth of knick-knacks, but digging out the supplies your child cast aside at the end of the last school year may be worth the effort. Items like scissors, rulers and protractors may not need to be replaced every year if they’re still in working condition. Assess what items you have that can be reused and those that need to be replaced for the new school year. Cut extra stops. Dashing all over town to find all the items on your supply list is not only time-consuming, it’s unnecessary. At stores like Office Depot and OfficeMax, you can find all the academic tools and supplies your student needs to head back to the classroom. What’s more, a store that specializes in school supplies will have a broad selection and ample stock of the essentials. Try online shopping. When you know exactly what you need, shopping online is a great time-saving solution. Online shopping makes it incredibly simple to keep tabs on your budget before you make purchases and easily keep track

of the items in your shopping cart. If you need to hand-select a few items in person, you can always take advantage of a “buy online, pick-up in store” option. This service lets you do your shopping from home with just a quick stop in-store to pick-up your purchases. Buy in bulk. It may seem counterintuitive when you’re trying to trim your spending, but if you can swing it, go ahead and buy extra items that you’ll likely need to replace mid-year. The sale prices during the back-to-school season aren’t likely to repeat during the school year, so in the long run you’ll save money and avoid a last-minute shopping trip on a busy school night in the future. Items like Stellar fashion notebooks, which give note-taking a fashionable twist, are great to have on hand throughout the school year. Research specials and promotions. For many stores, the back-to-school shopping season is second only to the holidays. This means you can expect widespread sales, promotions and special deals, such as “deals as low as a penny.” Some states also offer tax-free holidays near the beginning of the school year, which are honored at multiple retailers and generally restricted to school-related purchases like clothing, supplies and some technology.

Weigh quality vs. quantity. When you have a lengthy list of items to purchase for each child, it can be tempting to cut corners and skimp on spending. In some cases, being cost-efficient is smart, but do your research beforehand to avoid selecting items based solely on price. Value and quality don’t always go handin-hand and if you buy an item that falls apart or breaks down quickly, you may end up spending more to replace the items later. While it may be simpler for students to use printers and other machines at school, an all-in-one Epson Expression EcoTank Wireless Printer at home can be a convenient solution when late-night homework is bearing down. Make dollars do double duty. While most families expect to spend a sizable amount on back-to-school purchases (nearly $700, according to a 2016 survey by the National Retail Federation), making that money go a little further can soften the blow. You can help improve education in your community by shopping at stores that give a percentage of proceeds back to local schools. Programs vary; in some cases, you can even designate proceeds to the school district of your choice. Take more notes on smart back-toschool shopping ideas and deals at officedepot.com.
