Fashion/BODY TYPE GUIDE

FASHION GUIDE FOR YOUR BODY TYPE

RECTANGLE A boyish shape with shoulders the same width as the hips and an undefined waist, we recommend that rectangle’s get curvy — wear clothing that simulates an hourglass shape by emphasizing your shoulders and hips. Look for jackets that have strong or wide shoulders that make your waist appear smaller, or a peasant blouse that creates shape and interest on top. Rely on belts to pull the eye inward — wide, skinny or anywhere in between.

4

THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

HOURGLASS Naturally well-proportioned shoulders and hips with a small and defined waist. Hourglass shapes should seek out clothes that follow that basic frame and keep the shoulders and hips balanced. For instance, V-necks, sweetheart and scoop necklines that square off the shoulders will flatter a diamond’s collarbone and neck. Opt for fitted blazers instead of boxy, as well as full, pleated, A-line or pencil skirts with a wide waistband.

Thanks to the fashion industry’s

obsession with young, waif-thin models, real women all over the country are saddled with guilt as they struggle to squeeze into that elusive size 0. But when it comes to women’s clothing, the key to feeling beautiful

is choosing pieces that are not only fashionable but comfortable, too. Knowing your body type and choosing the right clothes that complement your body are the next steps to this process. Follow these fashion tips based on your unique body shape:

PEAR STRAWBERRY A swimmer’s body; broad shoulders and narrow hips. Our advice is to wear clothes that de-emphasize your shoulders and add contour to your bottom half to balance your figure. Jackets that cinch at the waist, and then flare out, create the illusion of curvy hips. Choose darker colors on top to narrow your silhouette, paired with low-rise pants with side pocket detailing or full, printed skirts.

Like it’s name, a pear-shaped body with narrow shoulders, a defined waist and a fuller bottom and hips. Add balance by creating wider shoulders, highlighting your waist and playing down your bottom half. Wear texture on top to create volume and interest, along with dark colors below the waistline. Bootcut pants make hips look slender by balancing hip width to hem width. Most importantly, think vertical: Knee-length pencil skirts will hold curves in.

How to develop character in young children

I

FAMILY FEATURES

n a typical day, it’s possible for children to spend more time engaging with technology than interacting with their peers faceto-face. As a result, the “selfie culture” is on the minds of today’s parents, who worry about how they can make sure their children grow into kind and selfless adults. However, a national survey revealed that parents don’t fully realize the power they have when it comes to developing good character in their children. The online survey, commissioned by national high-quality preschool provider Primrose Schools®, profiled hundreds of U.S. parents whose children attend, will attend or have previously attended an early education program between the ages of 3-5. In today’s social media-focused world, 92 percent of parents agree that nurturing positive character traits in children is more important than it used to be. Yet nearly 50 percent of parents are unaware of just how early they can and should start helping their children develop these traits.

When Character-Building Should Begin

The foundational skills for good character start emerging in the first year of life. Children as young as 6 months old can demonstrate outward signs of budding empathy skills. Character and emotional intelligence continue to develop throughout the early years and are significantly influenced by young children’s interactions with their parents and caregivers. Yet almost 50 percent of parents believe preschool is too early for children to start learning socialemotional skills, and could be missing critical opportunities to support their child’s development.

“We now know that IQ no longer represents an accurate predictor of school readiness, much less future life success,” said Dr. Laura Jana, a pediatrician and nationally acclaimed parenting and children’s book author. “It’s not just about learning the ‘3 Rs’ of reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic anymore. It’s the addition of a fourth ‘R’ that represents relationships and the importance of reading other people, which sets children up for success in today’s world.”

Finding Child Care that Nurtures Good Character

In addition to parents, child care providers play a key role in helping children develop a strong foundation. However, more than half of parents surveyed feel their child did not or will not acquire honesty, generosity and compassion (54, 54 and 62 percent, respectively) during their early education experience. Parents seeking early education and care for their children should look for providers that emphasize character development. In these nurturing environments, children have opportunities to learn and practice social-emotional skills every day through games, puppet play, books, music, art projects and more. At Primrose Schools, their Balanced

Learning® approach also includes hands-on experiences to help children apply concepts like generosity in reallife situations. For example, each year thousands of children at more than 325 Primrose schools across the country take part in the annual Caring and Giving Food Drive. The preschoolers earn money to purchase canned goods through chores at home. They practice perspective taking, learning about the importance of giving through stories, songs, art projects and more. They even take field trips to grocery stores to shop for food items, which are then donated to local charities. At the end of the experience, the children feel a sense of accomplishment and have practiced skills like empathy, generosity and compassion. “We believe who children become is as important as what they know,” said Gloria Julius, Ed.D., vice president of education and professional development for Primrose Schools. “That’s why nurturing children’s social-emotional development and building character has been an integral part of our approach for more than 30 years.” For additional information, tips and resources on how to nurture good character in children, visit PrimroseSchools.com/characterresources.

Why Nurturing Good Character Early is Important Intentionally nurturing social-emotional skills starting at birth is an important and often overlooked opportunity as these skills have been shown to be key predictors of future health, academic and life success. Early brain and child development research now shows more clearly that the first five years of life are critical for building the foundation for traits such as honesty, generosity, compassion and kindness, which will impact children for a lifetime.

DEVELOPING CHARACTER AT HOME Take an active approach to helping children develop a solid foundation in good character with these tips: n Help

children recognize their feelings. Help little ones recognize and understand their feelings by giving them vocabulary words to express themselves.

n Lead

by example. Children learn a lot by watching the interactions of adults. Model social-emotional skills by listening to others, apologizing when you hurt someone’s feelings, being respectful of others, etc.

n Help

children identify other perspectives. Point out differences in other people’s thoughts and feelings. When reading with children, ask what they think the characters are feeling or narrate the emotions and exaggerate facial expressions for young children.

n Talk

about your own decisions in terms of right and wrong. As children’s abilities and understanding grows, discuss your

values and take advantage of everyday situations to describe and demonstrate good citizenship and desirable behavior. n Let

kindness and respect rule the day. Set household guidelines grounded in showing kindness and respect, and help children learn to follow them. When they break the rules, calmly explain how or why their behavior was unkind and how they could have better handled the situation.

MAY APR BLOOM seems to make an even larger impact. I am creating a respectful and safe environment in school which is how it should be. The simple gesture of holding the door open, complimenting someone or inviting someone to sit with you and your friends can make learning even that much better! Kindness is contagious and before you know it, your one act started a ripple effect throughout the entire school. Start a new practice today and do one random act of kindness monthly (or more often, if you would like). You have the power to change someone’s life for the better by practicing random acts of kindness. The best part of kindness is that you bring YOURSELF even more love Spring not just for the blooming joy!

flowers and warming weather, but my mom’s Spring cleaning. Yes, you heard me right…Spring cleaning. Spring is the best time for a fresh start. This is when I take the time to rewrite my affirmations, set new goals and even start something new. One of my favorite things to do is Random Acts of Kindness which I have been doing for a few years now. Whether the act is big or small, it can make a huge difference in someone’s day. Not only does it put a smile on their face, but it makes me smile. Mostly, because the kindness surprises people! That’s right people are shocked that I am doing something for them JUST BECAUSE. There are many things that you can do to spread kindness. Here are some examples of things I have done: Given the crossing guards hot cocoa on a cold winter day. Donated socks to the homeless shelter. Shoveled snow for my mom & neighbor (without being asked). Placed “Take a Compliment” flyers in the break rooms at people’s work. Went around a parking lot leaving a flower tied with a ribbon and note on door handles. 8

f you’re one of the 57 percent of women who believes having an organized closet would make finding what you want easier and faster, there’s no time like the present to stop dreaming about having a beautiful and organized closet. Take charge and start the project now. Having a disorganized closet is a problem for at least one in four women, according a recent ClosetMaid survey. Some women (1 in 10) are even depressed when they open their closet doors. What’s more, some research suggests the average American wastes as much as 55 minutes a day (roughly 12 days a year) searching for things they can’t find. Introducing some organization is a simple way to alleviate these worries. Whether you reside in an apartment in the city or a home in the suburbs, your best starting point is to create a plan of attack. Professional organizer Barbara Reich of Resourceful Consultants offers these tips for getting started: Assess your needs. Ask questions like: Do you have a walk-in closet or a reach-in? Need to create one within a room? Do you prefer more shelves over hanging space? Is shoe storage important? Do you prefer a flexible system, like wire, that can adapt to your changing needs or do you prefer something with a designer look?

Are you a DIYer or do you require professional assistance? Define your taste and style. Do you prefer modern or traditional? Or are you more eclectic? Identify the product that works best for your needs and your budget. One option to consider is ClosetMaid SpaceCreations, a designer-inspired, DIY-acquired option that provides customizable storage inside and outside of closets. Available in Classic White or Premier Dark Java, it’s easy to install and is extremely versatile with different accessories and options like shoe shelves, drawers and acrylic dividers to provide a completely personalized look. As an added bonus, this storage option can be adapted for a nursery, mudroom or pantry. A handy online design tool or a complimentary professional designer can assist you with the layout and design. Let the organizing fun begin. Before you restock your new closet, scrutinize your wardrobe and accessories, and get rid of items you won’t ever wear or use again. Once you’ve got everything neatly in place, enjoy your newfound organization, but be vigilant about keeping your closet in order. Dedicate 15 minutes each week to keep it looking as good as new. 7 Ways to Add Functional Style to Your Closet Shine the light. A trendy light fixture can add fun and bling while providing adequate lighting to illuminate all the treasures your closet has to offer. Diffused lighting is a good way to chase away shadows and ensure none of your favorite garments and accessories get left in the dark. Organize by color. When you’re ready to hang clothes in your newly designed space, sort garments by style; group dressy tops, casual pants and so on. Then take your organization another step further by hanging like colors together. The streamlined color palette is pleasing to the eye, but it also makes it easier to select the right combinations and avoid overlooking any options. Hang clothes with care. Give your clothes some TLC and make the switch to high-quality hangers. Not only do uniform hangers make your closet appear more organized, they help keep your wardrobe in tip-top shape by preventing stretching. Slim velvet hangers are optimal for saving space, but if you have the room, a heavier wooden version is even better. Add some special flair. It’s not just the structure that affects the overall mood of your closet. One easy way to add some personal charm is with colorful and patterned fabric drawers. They provide a home to hide and

consolidate more personal belongings and add pops of color and style to your shelves. Make creative use of wall space. If you have some unused wall space, this is the perfect place for a dream board. A simple cork surface is all you need. Add pictures of your favorite outfits so you can remember pairings that made you feel great. You can also use the space for inspiration and add wish list items from magazines or photos of looks you’d like to try. Dedicate a container for capturing rejects. Avoid hanging on to unwanted items by designating a container to capture clothing destined for donation. When the bin is full, transfer to a cardboard box and drop off at a local charitable organization. A similar approach can be used for items that need repair; when a few items have accumulated, either haul out the sewing machine or head to the nearest seamstress for professional assistance. Don’t forget the floor. While much is made about the wall space, the floor is an important element of your closet, too. For carpeted rooms a rug may be more ornamental, but if you have hardwood floors, an area rug can be a safety feature that keeps you from slipping in your hurry to get dressed and out the door.

Prepare

YOUR PET FOR SUMMER Photo courtesy of Getty Images

F

FAMILY FEATURES

rom making plans to buying new clothes to filling your time with exhilarating (or relaxing) hobbies, gearing up for summer can be a fun and exciting exercise. With hotter months ahead, don’t forget that your pets need certain preparation in advance of summer also. With increased dangers like infectious bugs, poisonous plants and more time around water, plus the threat of heat itself, summer is an important time to make sure your pets are ready. Start with a few simple tips that can help ensure safety throughout the summer months. Keep them hydrated. Dehydration and heatstroke can be fatal to pets, so access to a clean water bowl both inside and outside is critical during summertime. While you’re on the go, be sure to bring water for your pet in a suitable drinking container. Protect against bugs. Ticks and other pesky bugs can cause headaches when the weather warms and you and your furry friends spend more time outside. Help keep those bugs away with preventative treatments, and be sure to check your pets closely for ticks after you’ve spent time outdoors.

Groom regularly. One of the best ways to keep a dog’s coat healthy and help prevent matting and summertime skin irritation is regular grooming. The right grooming tool can dramatically reduce shedding by removing the undercoat and loose hair without sacrificing the healthy top coat. Provide skin protection. Just like humans, dogs can experience sunburn and even skin cancer. To prevent sunburn, apply a sunscreen where hair is thin and skin lacks pigment (nose, ears and sensitive areas) every time your dog is outside. Clean the yard. Before letting dogs, cats or other pets out into the yard to play, check for hazards that can be removed or prevented. Search the yard for poisonous plants, ensure that fences are sturdy and whole, watch the area for possible predators if you own smaller pets and monitor your pet’s outdoor activity. Check screens. When the temperature is just right, many people love to throw open doors and windows to allow fresh air to rush through screen doors. However, those screens should be checked to ensure that pets can’t push them out or squeeze through a small hole. Add ID. Whether your pets play outside often or not, it’s a smart invest ment to add an identification tag to their collars. If they were to ever make a dash for an open gate or find a way outside without attention, an ID can help significantly increase the chances they are returned home safely. Teach them to swim. Many people increase their time around water dur ing the summer, whether it’s a neighborhood pool, a local pond or a lake. If you plan to bring along a pet, make sure that he or she is comfortable around water and able to swim before partaking in an activity that could potentially frighten your pet. Make a vacation checklist. Before hitting the road for a fun family get away, add important pet items to your checklist. Remember that while on a trip, your pet will need food and water, of course, but also may require specific bedding, toys, treats and more. Summer can provide a great opportunity to spend ample time bonding with pets, but preparing in advance for some of the pitfalls of all of the excitement can ensure that your pet enjoys it just as much as you do. 3 Tips to Help Pets in Need F or pet owners, their dogs, cats and other pets play an important role in bringing added happiness to their lives. As not every dog and cat is as fortunate, you may be looking for ways to help pets in need. As many as 6-8 million pets enter shelters every year across North America, according to The Humane Society of the United States. There are numerous ways you can help pets in need, starting with these tips.

Volunteer at Your Local Animal Welfare Organization

Almost every community has at least one animal shel ter or rescue group that needs help. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at shelters and rescue organi zations, from office duties and community outreach and education to training, feeding and socializing, so people with every skillset are often able to lend a hand.

Donate Supplies

While pets await adoption, they need access to food, making pet food a significant operating expense for animal welfare organizations. Through PetSmart’s Buy a Bag, Give a Meal program, for every bag of dog or cat food purchased online and at its more than 1,500

stores across North America through the end of the year, the leading pet specialty retailer will donate a meal to a pet in need served by animal welfare organ izations and food banks. “To celebrate 30 years of commitment to helping pets in need, and as a trusted partner to pet parents every where, we want to celebrate by giving back even more,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer at PetSmart. “Throughout 2017, every time pet parents purchase any bag of dog or cat food in our stores or online, they can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too.”

Foster or Adopt a Pet

As many animal welfare organizations have dogs or cats not suited for living in a shelter atmosphere, fostering a pet in your home is a simple way to give back without the long-term commitment of pet ownership. Of course, adopting from a rescue or shelter can not only save that pet, but also open a spot in the facility and potentially save another animal as well. Find more ways to get involved at your local shelter or rescue group, and learn more about the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal program at Petsmart.com/giveameal.

HAVING A BABY?

There's more to being prepared than just diapers and fluffy blankets. Here are 5 things you should know before bringing that bundle of joy home. By Scott Reidenbach If you or someone you love has welcomed a baby recently, you know that there are countless things to think about when you’re adjusting to life as a parent. All too often, selecting strollers, getting feeding schedules established, and finding time to SLEEP can be all consuming – and bigger picture priorities can be pushed aside. Whether it’s in your last months of pregnancy or the first weeks of your baby’s life, below are five crucial items that should sit at the top of every new parent’s to-do list. Remember, your new baby needs you to care for them and think ahead – it’s part of responsible parenting and none of these tasks require more than an hour of two of your time.

Face it, you are going to need some help when you have young children. Babysitters, handymen, night nurses and perhaps even someone to help with meals, laundry and cooking. Unless they are family members, run background checks, get a copy of their driver’s license and have an interview process and job application form. It may sound like overkill, but there is nothing more important than your and your children’s safety. Online services abound for forms and background checks – use them.

PLAN FOR THE INEVITABLE

NEIGHBORHOOD AWARENESS

It’s an uncomfortable thought for most people, and many younger couples put it off for years because it’s the last thing on their minds in their 20s or 30s. Get Wills, Living Wills and Power of Attorney documents drafted by a lawyer. It’s quick and inexpensive – often less than $1,000 to have husband and wife documents completed. If you fail to establish a Will, state law governs how your estate gets distributed and the guardianship of your minor children.

LIFE INSURANCE A term life insurance policy is very inexpensive when you are young and healthy, especially for non-smokers. The annual premium for a 20-year term policy with $1 million dollars of coverage is typically less than a few hundred dollars per year. Name your children as beneficiaries, and the proceeds can even be directed for education, healthcare or other essential expenses.

START SAVING With college tuition continually on the rise, you need to start saving as early as possible – possibly even before your child is born! A 529 College Savings Plan is a great way to start socking away money. The money grows tax-free, and it’s not taxed when taken out for college. Most plans are very hands off; you can set up automatic monthly contributions and the funds can be used for all qualifying educational expenses. You can adjust your contribution amounts, and even grandparents can gift money to the account at any time. A terrific answer to “what does Johnny need for his birthday?” when your playroom is bursting at the seams!

IN-HOME CARE PROTOCOL

THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

You may think you know everyone in your neighborhood, but it doesn’t hurt to use the public databases available today to confirm there’s no one questionable near your home. For peace of mind that there are no registered sex offenders living in your neighborhood, coaching your children or giving your children music lessons, conduct a quick and simple online search for registered offenders in your community. Some of the websites are free, others require payment. Run a search every few months – it’s an easy investment toward your most precious assets!

Fun, Festive Ideas to Sweeten Easter Celebrations

S

pring is here, which means it’s time for throwing memorable celebrations for friends and family. Whether you are hosting an Easter brunch or attending a spring picnic, you can make these occasions unforgettable with a few fun and festive additions.

EGG HUNT No Easter celebration is complete without an egg decorating station for children and the young at heart. Stock up on a variety of paints, glitter, dye, stencils, and textured fabric, and let imaginations run wild. Plan for your Easter egg hunt to take place outdoors, but have an indoor back-up in case the weather does not cooperate. Make sure to take all the ages of participants into account when deciding where to hide eggs!

SWEET TREATS Anyone with a sweet tooth knows that Easter and delicious treats go hand in hand, so pay extra attention to this essential element of your party. A candy buffet invites guests to try an assortment of treats. To satisfy everyone’s taste buds, offer milk and dark chocolates, lollypops, springtime truffles and sour bunnies. Stick with go-to candy makers like See’s Candies, which uses highquality ingredients and is one of the few remaining candy makers that ages its chocolate -- a process that imparts a smoother, mellower flavor and elevates the overall taste experience, making it a great option for Easter entertaining.

SPRUCE UP Take an opportunity to spring clean your home before your gathering. A new season and knowing guests will be coming

over can be great motivators for sprucing up your home. For décor, gather flowers to create colorful centerpieces, including tulips and Easter lilies. Use brightly colored tablecloths and runners, scattering confetti and small sweet treats on tables for a special touch.

EASTER BASKET Whether crafting Easter baskets or looking for a gift to take to your host, candy is always a great choice. No matter what your basket or gift budget is, treats can be found in a variety of sizes and price ranges -- from handdecorated Rocky Road Eggs to chocolate bunnies and Strawberry Cream Lollypops. For more Easter inspiration, visit Sees.com or their Instagram page. With a few sweet twists, you can spring into Easter with flair this year. Courtesy of StatePoint 15

ARE YOU DATING A NARCISSIST? 7WRed Flags Not to Miss

By Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD

ith more and more people turning to dating apps and websites to meet people, we see a relatable pattern. You see someone’s photo. You’re attracted. You read their profile or brief description of who they claim to be. You reach out. You exchange emails. You text. Maybe you’ll speak briefly and then, you meet. You’re hitting it off. Things seem great. However, it seems almost too good to be true. Is it?

According to Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, narcissists are everywhere and in varying degrees. She explains that the current “swipe right” dating culture only feeds their agenda, it’s important to understand who they are and how to spot them. 16

WHAT IS NARCISSISM? Many mental health specialists agree that narcissism is basically an individual who has an excessive interest or admiration of a false self they created to cope with early hurts as children. “Narcissists are disconnected from their true selves and are constantly working to appear better than others. They have an idealized self-image and are in love with that image which hides their true wounded self,” says Hafeez. Dr. Hafeez shares some “red flag” characteristics of narcissists along with tips and insights that can spare many people the heartache and mental anguish that comes

1

NARCISSISTS ARE OFF THE CHARTS CHARMING. They are incredibly upbeat and bombard you with compliments. Immediately you are captivated by them and their focus on you. They have quick wit, can read people and know what to say to make them feel good. “Narcissists are great at building rapport quickly; however, they are doing so to serve themselves first and foremost. In other words, they feed off the attention, admiration and validation of others so they charm with an agenda,” cautions Dr. Hafeez.

reating one-of-a-kind desserts doesn’t have to take hours in the kitchen or even exceptional baking skills. With a little imagination and the right tools, you can whip up surprisingly delicious sweets that will surprise and delight your friends and family. Focus on flavor If your baking repertoire typically consists of white cake and chocolate frosting, spice things up a bit by experimenting with new fillings and flavor combinations. Opt for complementary or contrasting tastes for a truly delectable dessert. For example, pair fudgy chocolate cake with tangy berries, or see how a bold flavor like lemon adds a new dimension to a mild vanilla. Add a special touch Infusing new flavors into your favorite cake or brownie recipe is surprisingly easy when you use bakeware made for the purpose. Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware helps home bakers easily create “treat-filled” desserts. Each bakeware set comes with two pans: One pan creates the bottom half of the cake and forms indentations in the cake you can fill with fruit, puddings, candy and more, while the second pan creates the top half of the cake, which hides the surprise fillings. Shape it up Artfully applied frosting and other decorations can instantly dress up a basic cake, but another option is upgrading the shape of the cake itself. In addition to traditional square, round and sheet cake pans, the Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware collection includes mini heart cakes, fluted cakes, mini loaf cakes and a cake cones pan. These special shapes make it easy to create enviable desserts out of classic recipes. Find more surprisingly easy dessert ideas at FillablesbyBakersAdvantage.com.

MY FEET ARE KILLING ME

There's not a woman on the planet that has never uttered the words "my feet are killing me" at the end of a high-heeled night on the tiles. So how can we achieve the look, still wear our dream shoes and avoid walking home in stocking feet? Gloria Dunlop, lecturer in podiatry at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, says: "We are bombarded with images of celebrities strutting their stuff down the red carpet in heels that make them look like they have legs up to their armpits. The fashion magazines are full of them. It's therefore little wonder that we nearly all fall into the trap of succumbing to the latest fashion trends.

KILLER HEELS

"We've all experienced the discomfort and burning sensation associated with wearing party shoes. But despite the pain, we still persevere." So, how can we keep dancing into the wee small hours and still avoid falling off our platform shoes and spraining our ankles? Dunlop has some top tips for keeping our toes in good shape. 1 . DON'T WEAR THE SAME SHOES REPEATEDLY Have a selection of shoes of different shapes, different heel heights and definitely a pair of trainers in your wardrobe. 2. CHEAP SHOES DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN BAD SHOES There is nothing wrong with wearing a less expensive shoe.

20

THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

Expensive shoes are not a guarantee of problem-free feet. 3. CHANGE YOUR SHOES DAILY Sometimes we wear shoes that cramp our toes because they're too tight. Continually wearing high heels can result in painful leg muscles. Changing your shoes daily will prevent a foot or leg problem occurring. 4. AVOID WEARING SLING BACKS ON A REGULAR BASIS Repeatedly wearing sling backs can quickly lead to the development of a large hard bump at the back of the heel, commonly known as a haglands bump. This is irreversible, so avoid at all costs. It becomes very difficult to wear any closed-in shoe once you have developed a haglands bump.

5. WEAR PADDING ON THE BALLS OF YOUR FEET IF PARTYING IN HIGH HEELS Use foot felts and foams. Foot specialist Scholl provides a range, including ballof-foot cushions and pressure-point foam padding that can be bought in shops such as New Look, River Island, Oasis, Topshop and most supermarkets and chemists. These products have an adhesive backing that sticks to your feet, avoiding slippage and therefore blisters.

8. AVOID SPRAINS AND STRAINS Sprains, strains and muscle soreness can happen to anyone, but are more likely if you are walking on an uneven surface or a very high narrow heel. Avoid cobbled streets and best get a taxi home after the party.

9. USE ICE ON PAINFUL SPRAINS AND STRAINS Ice does work - it reduces swelling. If you suffer a sprain or strain, use ice as soon as possible or within the first four 6. NEVER BURST A BLISTER hours. Home/GARDENING TIPS

CREATIVE GARDENING TIPS FOR THE SPRING

SEASON

Gardeners often focus on the science of their hobby: how much water and sunlight their plants need and how to improve soil quality and keep pests at bay. But there can be a lot of artistry behind the craft as well -- from how you harvest and enjoy flowers to how you convert unused spaces of your home into a viable indoor edible garden. Put your creativity to good use this spring season by gardening with style.

INDOOR GARDENING For those who don’t have an outdoor garden or yard, the dream of enjoying your own freshly picked fruits and vegetables may seem out of reach. However, the nooks and crannies of your home

can

productive growing zones. And experts say that nearly all homes can support indoor gardening. “Whatever the size of your home, there will be a selection of edible plants you can grow indoors, as long as you have some natural daylight filtering in,” says Zia Allaway, author of “Indoor Edible Garden: Creative Ways to Grow Herbs, Fruit and Vegetables in Your Home.” “The areas where plants will grow can be windowsills, beneath a skylight or even in a dark, unlit area if you install grow lights.” 30

THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

In “Indoor Edible Garden,” a highly visual guide full of practical tips and stylish ideas, Allaway offers stepby-step directions for everything from creating suspended shelves and hanging jars for growing herbs to mounting edible orchids onto bark and displaying them on walls. She points out that those embarking on indoor gardening should first evaluate the level of time they can commit. “Just remember that unlike other projects in the home, such as decorating and cooking, all gardening projects require some aftercare. So, if you have a busy schedule, choose crops that will tolerate less watering and feeding.”

FLOWER ARRANGING While your flower garden is likely a beautiful work of art in and of itself, you can spread the joy by harvesting your flora and bringing the beauty indoors. Floral arrangements add vitality to any interior space. “For me, every arrangement starts with the container. Think about what mood or style you want to evoke, and remember, anything can be a container as long as it can be made watertight,” says Rachel Siegfried,” author of “The Flower Book: Natural Flower Arrangements for Your Home,” which explores 60 flowers, bloom-by-bloom in portraiture, including quick-reference profiles and tips.

Siegfried recommends that, when selecting flowers for your arrangement, pay attention to shapes, textures and colors to achieve good balance. Start with a primary focal flower and build out with a couple of secondary focals, a final flourish, and foliage. For her part, she relies on instinct. “I get a ‘buzz’ when I find a good combination,” she says. FAMILY FEATURES

pring is a time of renewal and revitalization, but it’s hard to appreciate all the invigorating aspects of spring when your home still bears months of winter dust and dirt. Tackle your living space room-by-room for a spring clean that will leave you and your home refreshed and ready for a new season.

Kitchen

Although the kitchen is likely the room that gets the most cleaning attention, there are probably still areas for spring improvements. Cabinets and countertops make the biggest impression in your kitchen, so give them a thorough wipe-down, adding polish to the woodwork and natural stone, and repair any chips or damaged spots. Make your appliances look new again by wiping down and scrubbing hard-toreach and heavy-use areas like the top of the refrigerator and the stovetop. They may not be immediately visible, but don’t overlook the inside of your cupboards. Discard expired food, damaged items and wayward pieces, such as lids with no matching container and vice versa. Finish off the kitchen with sweeping and mopping for squeaky clean floors.

Living Areas

Throughout the house, your biggest chore may be removing clutter. Finding storage solutions or new homes for accumulated items can make rooms seem instantly brighter and more welcoming. Dusting the blinds, lighting fixtures and fans can add a fresh touch, and clean baseboards make for a top-to-bottom clean. Vacuum cushions as well as under and behind all furniture, and if necessary, consider shampooing the carpets. Dust all the nooks and crannies, including any decorative items and accessories.

Bedrooms

The closet is a good starting point in the bedroom. Sort your clothes and discard any you haven’t worn in the past year; these can be donated. Also check for any items that need repair and set them aside to mend when you take a cleaning break. This is also a good time to put away winter clothing and bring out your spring and summer attire. Additionally, you may find it helpful to add organization and storage containers to help control items like shoes, handbags and other accessories. As temperatures rise, your bedding needs will change, as well. Wash and put away blankets you won’t need until the weather turns cool again. Flip and rotate your mattress for longer wear before you add fresh, lightweight sheets. While the mattress is raised, you can take advantage of access under the bed to run the vacuum. A fresh new pillow will add the final refreshing touch to your spring-ready bed. Before you leave the bedroom, don’t forget to pull dressers and other furniture away from the walls to vacuum, dust each item thoroughly and wipe down baseboards and blinds or shutters. Once all your cleaning is complete, take a few extra steps to make your home feel extra fresh and clean. On a warm day, throw open the windows to let the fresh breeze chase away stale winter air and add lightly scented candles throughout the house for a home that smells as inviting as it looks. Don’t Lose Your Natural Stone’s Luster

D

urability is one reason homeowners choose natural stone for their kitchens and bathrooms, but the greatest appeal is often the sheer beauty of the material. Maintaining that luster and shine requires a bit of effort, but the ability to enjoy the unique character of natural stone makes it all worthwhile. It’s important to understand the shine on granite and other natural stone is not from applying a wax, but a natural shine that reflects a rigorous process. After being quarried from the earth’s surface, these stone blocks are taken to a factory for processing. The next step is a polishing line. It’s this factory finish that enhances the inherent characteristics of natural stone – the veins, swirls and crystals. From there the slabs are bundled and shipped to local stone manufacturers and installers to be cut to a homeowner’s specifications. Once installed, you can maintain that luxurious factory finish with these tips from the experts at Granite Gold. Clean often. Even miniscule particles could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. However, it’s important to avoid common cleaners and abrasives as they can break down the protective seal and dull the natural finish, and result in expensive repairs. Also avoid using an abrasive scrubbing pad, which may leave

unsightly scratches. Rely on scrubbing pads designed specifically for natural stone or look for “non-scratch” on the packaging. Seal frequently. Frequently sealing natural stone surfaces maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil buildup. It’s easy to test when to reseal. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if a dark mark or ring is created by the water, it is time to reseal. Be sure to repair any etching or stains before the sealant is applied. Polish regularly. Polishing not only brings out the stone’s natural beauty, it reinforces the protective seal and provides ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. One time-saving but effective solution after sealing is Granite Gold Clean & Shine, which provides the cleaning power of the line’s Daily Cleaner and the luster from the Polish in one easy-to-use formula. You can find the products nationwide at Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond and Amazon; check the store locator at GraniteGold.com.

HEALTH-Sometimes it's OK to be you (JUST LOOK AFTER YOU) Did you hear about the financial trader who managed to lose half his body fat and get an eight pack in just 12 weeks? Did you even know there was such a thing as an eight pack?

Don't worry, you're in good company. The miraculous story was reported in UK newspapers in October 2016, and understandably caught many people's attention, and captured imaginations. What if you could do the same? How much hard work would it take? Could you pull it off?

The answer is quite simply 'Of course you could'. Whether you want to or not is another question. Dropping from 14stone to 12 is admirable if that's the healthy thing to do. But perhaps you're taller or bigger built. Realistically there's no perfect size or shape, providing one vital rule is always adhered to- look after yourself properly.

Do this and yourself will take care of the rest. So eat well, exercise regularly, and most of all don't ignore the niggles that can get

worse with time. That might not be anything you consider 'medical', either. Forget about funny rashes and bumps, then, we're talking about backs, joints, limbs- all the bits that move, and, if not treated as they should be, can stop you moving in the long run. It's amazing how many normal, day-to-day activities are actually really quite bad for us. Driving, train-ing, Tube-ing, desk-ing, even just sitting down has been linked to premature death. Let's just run that by you again- premature death. From sitting down.

Crazy as it may sound it's the truth according to some experts, and whilst we're not advocating jumping on the good (or bad?) ship health hysteria, the point is that you should always keep an eye on how the old body is running, and never be afraid or too embarrassed to look for help when needed. From chiropractors to GPs, you'll thanks us for this advice in the end. Courtesy of freefeatures.com

You need soap and water. The exception: exfoliating wipes, which remove more grime with acids, says Jeannette Graf a dermatologist in Great Neck, New York. They're too harsh to use every night, so save them for days when you're beyond tired.

Oil cleansers. They remove oil-soluble dirt and makeup along with the pollution that's stuck to it—and a creamy cleanser finishes the job. Smooth an oil, like Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi SkinRefining Cleansing Oil or Garnier Clean+ Nourishing Cleansing Oil, over dry skin, rinse, then follow with a creamy face wash and water.

Cleansing masks. Charcoal is absorbent enough to pull all the gunk you don't want, like pollution and dirt, out of pores. Soft clay masks work the same way and are better for dry or sensitive skin than charcoal, which soaks up more oil. (Try Tammy Fender Purifying Luculent Masque and Charlotte Tilbury Goddess-Skin Clay Mask.)

The 5 Ingredients You Need to Detox Your Skin Think of these ingredients as a ginger-lemon detox tea—for your face. SEA SALT Salt scrubs and soaks claim to detox skin with minerals (an unsubstantiated claim), but their real benefits may come from salt's moisturizing effects. In a study at the University of Kiel in Germany, participants with chronic dry skin soaked in sea salt for 15 minutes and found their skin's moisture barrier was significantly stronger for a full six weeks. SOFT CLAY We can all learn a few things from Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon—like, mermaid hair is sexy, and covering yourself in mud is a good idea. Soft clay masks are a new version of the old familiar clay masks. They work the same way as charcoal, by drawing dirt out of skin, with an added benefit: The clay is mixed with moisturizing botanical oils (like lavender, sweet almond, and safflower) to hydrate. ALGAE Algae, like seaweed, can protect skin. It stimulates blood flow in the skin enough to make you glow. It's not as cleansing as charcoal or clay, but it is often mixed with one or both in face masks.Algae is a good antioxidant, and it's rich in detoxifying minerals. ANTIOXIDANTS They don't totally protect your skin from pollution, but they do play a big role in detoxing. Antioxidants decrease the damage caused by pollution, including pigment formation and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Look for serums with vitamin C, idebenone, niacinamide, or multiple botanical antioxidants, like pomegranate, mangosteen, and berry extracts. CHARCOAL This works like a vacuum. "Charcoal is absorbent enough to pull all the gunk you don't want, like pollution and dirt, out of pores," says Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist. It comes in face washes and konjac sponges, but in order for it to work, charcoal has to sit on skin for a full minute. For that reason, either leave the cleanser on skin for that time or choose a charcoal mask. 37

#FirstTimeFurMom By Dawn McCarthy of Dawnscorner.com Can you believe it, with all this crazy weather the winter has brought!? March is finally here and the start to “Spring”. I personally love springtime as the weather is still not as hot as the summer, and the perfect temperature to be out at the park, go on walks and hikes, while not having to be all bundled up. It’s important to me to walk my dog (Josie) twice a day as she is a “Premium Blend” (my preferred moniker over “Mutt”) with a few mixes of Terrier, English Cocker, including some Jack Russell and Catahoula. How do I know all of this? Yes .. I bought the DNA testing kit for dogs. That’s what you do when you rescue right!? I must disclose, the test also said my dog has Newfoundland in her. But she is all of but 16 pounds, the owner of a Newfoundland at a dog park and I got a real good laugh when she asked me what kind of dog I had, and I said she is a “Newfie”, too. Not too sure how precise this test is, but the many other breeds that came up fit her to a tee! Exercise is not only good for us, but our fur kids. As long as my dog gets out once or twice a day for some run time, a hike, walk or to socialize at the park, life is good. As I said last month, she has really helped me find some balance and getting out and taking that break away from my desk. She is also just a little under 2 ½ years old and still has lots of energy. I love having a whole new set of friends as well from taking her out and about. With the many connections I have, surprisingly, I even found my web designer who takes care of my website while out walking with my dog. I am telling you, Josie has opened many new doors for me which I never would have imagined. Just like moms meet new moms at school and on play dates…this happens with our dogs too!

I have also learned dogs, likes kids, have their favorite friends, good and bad days, and daily exercise is important to their health. I am lucky to live by hiking trails, parks and some open green spaces. My dog is obsessed with the ball, even over food and nothing makes her happier than just getting out to play fetch. I am also fortunate that I have close family who watches Josie and takes her on hikes while I travel with "Ms. Bingley", their friendly Labrador (also known as Josie's Mom). I will talk about that canine relationship later. This month, treat yourself, your kids and the fur ones in the family to some kind of outdoor activity. And lastly, “Spring cleaning” is a time-honored tradition in many households, but be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Almost all cleaning products, even all natural ones, contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. Here are some products from the ASPCA you should be careful about using..
