Save Your Natural Tooth!
I
Has your dentist told you that you need root canal treatment? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Watch our videos at southtexasendo.com to learn more!
nside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. We also provide nitrous, oral and IV sedation for the anxious patient.
If you are given a choice between root canal treatment
or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge or implant that looks, feels and functions as well as a natural tooth. Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist. Never choose extraction because you think it will be cheaper! When a natural tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with an artificial tooth to prevent other teeth from shifting, and to prevent future dental problems. The cost of a denture, bridge or implant, plus the extraction, often is higher than the cost of an endodontic procedure that would save the tooth for years to come. Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment.
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages such as: • Efficient chewing • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain • Natural appearance • Normal biting force and sensation so you can continue to eat your favorite foods • Limits the need for costlier, ongoing dental work

On the Cover: When it came to this month’s cover, we essentially had 50 different options to choose from. We wanted to create a scene that not only every local could relate to, but one that would draw people in and make them wonder what the other 49 items on the list are. With those two things in mind, we decided upon Gates Donuts as our location; because, after all, what’s more local than that? (Photo by: Rachel Benavides) 12 The Bend

five years ago.
y wife, Kaley, was born and raised in the Coastal Bend. I am coming up on six years in the region. This unique perspective has served us well since launching the magazine
Almost all of the things you will find in our “50 Things Every Coastal Bend Local Must Do” feature, starting on page 36, were both new and exciting aspects of the Coastal Bend when I first moved here. I had never driven down a road as beautiful as Ocean Drive. I had never had a donut as good as a Gates’ donut, and my eyes were finally opened to the way a breakfast taco should taste. One of my earliest memories was sitting at the bar inside Water Street Oyster Bar staring down at a dozen raw oysters perfectly arranged
Three Takeaways:
1. January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month and New Life Refuge Ministries will hold their biggest fundraiser of the year on January 26th. 2. MDR’s new headquarters resides in the old Nixon Building – the original high-rise built in Corpus Christi in 1927. 3. The two cute little girls on the cover happen to be my daughters and I plan to make more time for our special daddy-daughter donut dates in 2019.
As I look over the list, I wanted to put out a small disclaimer. I don’t believe completing every item on the list is a requirement for reaching local status. In fact, it is the complete opposite. If anyone does consider themselves a local or is looking for the local experience, this list is here to help readers navigate the intricate details that make life in the Coastal Bend special. It’s these unique factors that formed the heart of the list. I am already making plans to run in Beach to Bay, #23, this year and walk the Harbor Bridge, #20, before it’s too late! One more thing. We added a new section this year titled “What’s Online” on page 24. Check it out each month to stay up to date on all things digital from thebendmag.com and tag @thebendmag in all your favorite Instagram posts for a chance to get your photos featured in our newsletter or the magazine. he time has come to bid adieu to the wintry muted tones, because the spring season is bringing out bold arrays of paintbox brights to play with. With the tone shift in fashion, it’s no suprise that designers are drawing inspiration from the most elementary of color palettes: primary colors. For those of you not familiar with the color wheel, this means red, yellow, and blue. Despite the inherent simplicity of the color palette, it's tough to find a more eye-catching combination. There’s just something so fresh and playful about wearing a true, bold hue loud and proud. Strutting the streets in a flashy primary color celebrates fashion’s power to generate confidence, and the effects are irresistable. Some people opt for a color-blocked look, while others decide to incorporate the hues into complex prints. Either way, this is the kind of "basic" we can get behind when it comes to fashion.

Time for Tea While three cups of tea are consumed worldwide for every cup of coffee, it’s only recent that your everyday coffee drinkers are dramatically flocking towards the other brew. Now, of course drinking tea is by no means a trend, after all it’s the most consumed drink on the planet next to water; but the humble cup is making major strides to change consumer perceptions of the timeless delight. With a rise in the desire for local craft, people are beginning to think of tea with the same reverence as coffee due to its vast varieties, flavor combinations, and health benefits.

Educate. Partner. Refuge. Non-profit organization focuses on education for prevention and awareness of child sex trafficking By: Jacqueline Gonzalez
H
uman trafficking is a serious deal in the Coastal Bend. Without proper education, the idea that “it can’t happen to my kids” is prevalent. New Life Refuge Ministries focuses on educating the community and implementing new programs to eradicate the trafficking problem in the Coastal Bend. Minta Moore, Executive Director, talks to us about the many great things New Life Refuge Ministries has implemented for our youth, along with future projects.
26 The Bend
Moore explains, “Our educational component has been a driving force for combating the issue. The more support the organization has, the more attention we can draw to helping out.” After receiving a grant to provide free training for law enforcement and counselors at Del Mar College, the round table group has now grown into a thriving task force. With the help of these partnering organizations, New Life Refuge Ministries can provide the safe space for these children to recover. The task force, which includes
CCPD, Homeland Security, DPS, the hotel industry, non-profit pregnancy centers, Texas A&M University, and Driscoll Children’s Hospital, extends across 11 counties from Corpus Christi to Laredo.
positive healing process going. They are currently collaborating with the Harbor Playhouse to incorporate a drama therapy program and also hope to implement music and art therapy.
New Life Refuge Ministries has also been working diligently with school districts, including school nurses, administration, faculty, and student body to educate them about the ways sex traffickers manipulate victims. Knowledge in this area makes spotting the warning signs easier and hopefully allows for all involved to combat the issue before it escalates.
A grant from Valero for an outdoor classroom will allow these kids to revel in nature. “Our houses are in a beautiful area,” says Moore. “To be able to capitalize on that is therapeutic.” Equine therapy has been phenomenal and can expedite the healing process. They’re also looking forward to adding a farming component complete with local livestock shows to help the kids learn and grow through responsibility.
The education component isn’t restricted to the community. Members of the New Life Refuge Ministries learn new information with every moment spent helping our youth. While visiting Juvenile Detention Centers, Moore realized how much trafficking affects boys in the community. “We didn’t realize the prevalence of it until the boys mentioned the lack of education on this subject when they were growing up. They had no idea what was happening to them was wrong.” The board members have now reworked their master plan for housing accommodations to include homes for boys as well. Currently, Florida is the only state with housing accommodations for male victims of trafficking. New Life Refuge Ministries hopes to have two houses for boys available sometime this year. Rehabilitation and healing is a major component of the rescue’s mission. Moore states, “Providing a life of normalcy is our objective.” In the past, the kids have taken part in art programs at K Space, The YWCA has provided memberships for exercise, and the local food bank has provided nutrition and cooking classes. Kathryn Andreas From dark chocolate absinthe flavored macarons to unicorn tattoos, the mastermind behind Moonlight Macarons is a force to be reckoned with By: Kylie Kinnett Photos by: Rachel Benavides
What is the craziest flavor combination you’ve ever created? Dark Chocolate Absinthe was definitely unusual! And more recently I made a Maple Bacon macaron, with a whiskey infused maple bacon jam in the middle. If you could be a macaron, what kind would you be? I would want to be one of my unicorn macarons! Cute, magical, glittery, sweet. I definitely have a thing for unicorns; I even got one tattooed on my arm. We’ve heard about your crazy sleep (or lack thereof) schedule. How do you get everything done in a day that you need to? The short answer is: I don’t! I work almost every day and still don’t finish. I insist on adding those special, extra touches to my macarons, and it makes the lack of sleep all worth it to see happy customers, especially the kids. I’m so happy to get to be a part of their special days.

“Macarons are famously hard to make. Up until I tried baking them, I thought I could make almost anything. I had been baking for most of my life. But macarons really challenged me, and I had to practice many times to finally perfect them.”

100 Years of Scouting CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA By: Kirby Tello Photos courtesey of: Boy Scouts of America
32 The Bend
“If more people followed the Boy Scout creed, things like trustworthiness, loyalty, courtesy, and kindness, then today’s society could be more tolerant of each other’s differences. We don’t need to be in total agreement with all of our differences, but just be kind and courteous.”
S
ince 1910, the Boy Scouts of America have provided a positive impact on young people and their families by introducing life, relationship, and problem-solving skills into the lives of participants.
The very earliest scouting groups in Corpus Christi can be dated back to 1910-1911. It all began when a local mother saw an article in the newspaper and thought it would be a great program for her son and his friend. This local mother was the catalyst for organizing the first Boy Scouts program in Corpus Christi. Nine years after the inception of the Boy Scouts of America on a national level, the Corpus Christi Council was formed. As the local organization grew, more counties were added and the name changed several times. Now known as the South Texas Council, this group will celebrate 100 years of scouting in 2019. This year, thousands of South Texas scouts and their families will be celebrating their Centennial with a year-long celebration. Preliminary planning for the celebration began almost two years ago. The activities include Centennial related programs and events, a Centennial camporee expo, and a Centennial logo and patch design. Later in the year, the organization will host a Centennial Gala. In addition, a digital website showcasing the history of the Boy Scouts of America is being made. A Centennial coffee table book will be the hallmark centerpiece, capturing many of the memories, history, documents, and photos of the people, places, and events that have defined South Texas scouting over the past 100 years. Some say you don’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been. Marty Sepulveda, Scout Executive and CEO of the South Texas Council for Boy Scouts of America, says, “The foundation of the Boy Scouts program is still relevant even more so today than ever before.” The core tenants of the program, found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law, have helped build the future leaders in our community and will continue to shape future scouts and influence productive progress in the Coastal Bend.
“We want to make sure young people have healthy lifestyles and understand the importance of healthy living,” says Sepulveda. “If more people followed the Boy Scout creed, things like trustworthiness, loyalty, courtesy, and kindness, then today’s society could be more tolerant of each other’s differences. We don’t need to be in total agreement with all of our differences, but just be kind and courteous.” To finalize this message, Sepulveda states, “Scouting can truly change the world we live in.” There has certainly been a community buzz about gender-related changes happening in the Boy Scouts’ program. However, while the South Texas Council gears up to celebrate its 100-year legacy, it is important to shine a light on how this legacy has always been co-ed. Last fall, the entire executive board and directors made a decision to allow Boy Scouts of America’s Chartered Organizational Programs

“Our programs are evolving with the times,” says Sepulveda, “and we make sure to put all of the safeguards in place to keep our children protected.” This way, the organization can stay at the forefront of allowing progressive change to happen within their programs, which ultimately is a positive impact on our community. (i.e., churches, schools, and civic groups that sponsor Boy Scouts) the option to register female youngsters into the Cub Scouts (elementary age) program, as well as the Boy Scouts (middle school and high school age) program. These are two programs that have not traditionally had girls in them. The change ultimately came about because more and more millennial families were expressing their diverse needs in our ever-evolving world. To be clear, while the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts programs are offered to all genders, they are not co-ed. Each den or group of children meets separately and is lead by a den leader (a parent) of the same gender. Boy Scouts of America still believes that the development of youth at those early stages continues to be beneficial when the genders are separate. That said, all dens do come together once a month for meetings, field trips, or camping trips. This is a time for all of the children and parents to intermingle because the organization also recognizes and supports the development of healthy co-ed relationships. There is a misconception that the Boy Scouts of America has been male only up until recent changes. However, the older age group programs, which include the Exploring Program and Sea Scouts, have been serving both males and females for well over 40 years. “So, we have had an experience with female members in our programs, and we are a better organization because of that,” explains Sepulveda. The organization understands that while the societal structure of what a family looks like changes and will continue to change, they must adjust their programs to meet those needs to serve their youth members and their families in the best way possible.
In fact, Scouting is one of the most influential youth organizations in the Coastal Bend. The organization has over 4,500 youth members and over 1,900 adult volunteers. As of December 31, 2017, the Boy Scouts of America South Texas performed 25,000 hours of community service. This is the legacy of service that the Boy Scouts will be celebrating throughout 2019. It is important for the organization to continue to show their relevance in providing the opportunity for youth to experience problem solving, general life skills like discipline and responsibility, and leadership development. These tenants are the foundation for helping our youth grow into individuals who will tackle community, national, and worldwide issues. Today, the South Texas Council aims to keep the local program vital by marketing the brand as relevant and teaching kids fundamental skills while allowing them to have fun. The goal is to provide an environment where the youth are excited to grow in the program and develop a personal acumen that they can build on throughout their lives. Throughout the year-long Centennial celebration, the South Texas Council of Boy Scouts of America will continue to develop an organization that is pertinent to the development of Coastal Bend youth and inclusive of all families regardless of dynamic, socioeconomic conditions and the communities in which they live. This year, take the time to support the Boy Scouts of America as they commemorate and preserve their long-time history of service in the Coastal Bend.

50 Things
Every Coastal Bend
Local
Must
DO By: Kylie Kinnett Photos by: Rachel Benavides & Brynn Osborn
What does it mean to be a local through and through? To us, it means sharing a boundary-transcending bond with one another – a bond that when you come across it, you know. It’s a shared experience with other Coastal Bend locals. It’s an inside joke that only someone from Corpus would understand. We took the idea of that bond and turned it into a list of 50 things every local should do, know, or experience. How many have you done? Who knows, you just might find out something about the Coastal Bend you’ve never known before.

TAKE YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING TO THE DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET
The next time you’re on the hunt for fresh produce and goods, wait until Wednesday, and then head to the Downtown Farmers’ Market. Stop by any of the vendor booths and you’ll find a bounty of squash, carrots, tomatoes, peaches, local honey, fresh bread, and so much more. Bring your reusable bags and stock your kitchen with local goodness.
ACTUALLY WAKE UP AT THE CRACK OF DAWN FOR THE SEA TURTLE RELEASE
The sea turtle release is one of those things almost every Coastal Bend local talks about, but few have actually participated it. During this event, newly hatched sea turtles slowly make their way to the water. While the releases do not occur on a regular schedule, they typically happen between the months of June and August. You might not be too happy when you’re alarm goes off, but watching baby turtles return to their true home will definitely be worth it.
3
EXPLORE DOWNTOWN ON FOOT
With all the one-way streets downtown, it can be fairly easy to become accustomed to the surroundings you see when driving, that you might not even know about some of the things you’re driving by every day. Explore Downtown on foot and you’ll discover murals, cool architecture, sides of buildings with more character than you could ever imagine, and optimum photo opportunities.
4
GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AT SWANTNER PARK AND SIT BY THE WATER
Regardless of what part of town you might have grown up in, Swantner Park probably has some type of special place in your heart. Whether you went on a “first date” there or brought breakfast tacos at sunrise, getting out of your car and sitting by the water is a sure-fire way to enjoy a peaceful moment in the city. Plus, there is a killer view of the downtown skyline from here!
5
ATTEND A PERFORMANCE OF ROCKY HORROR AT AURORA ARTS THEATRE
Janet! Dr. Scott! Janet! Brad! ROCKY! Any true Coastal Bend local absolutely will have attended a performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Aurora Arts Theatre. Not for the faint of heart, this annual production gets better year after year and is unlike any other theatre performance. From the prop bags to the call outs, you’ll most definitely leave this show a whole new person.
6
TAKE A FERRY RIDE TO SAN JOE’S ISLAND AND WATCH THE DOLPHINS ALONG THE WAY
The chance to immerse yourself in unruffled Texas nature is just a ferry ride away from Port Aransas. This privately owned island is a hub for birding, fishing, shell searching, and beach lounging. Plus, there is a pretty solid chance you’ll spot a dolphin or two on your commute!
7
TIME TRAVEL WITH DOC MCGREGOR

ic buildings with photos from Doc McGregor. Once you download the app, it will give you directions to where each tour begins and provide you with interesting tidbits and super cool photos of what each spot looked like between the 30s and 70s.
8
HAVE A COCKTAIL AT GRANDVIEW LOUNGE
Sipping on your favorite cocktail amidst floor to ceiling windows showcasing one of the best views in town is pretty ideal. Well, that is exactly what is in store for you when having a drink at the Grand View Lounge. Atop the Best Western Hotel on Shoreline Blvd., this bar offers a sophisticated libation break in your week.
9
SIT OUTSIDE AND EAT A TEXAS WAVE AT HESTER’S CAFÉ IN THE ART MUSEUM OF SOUTH TEXAS
With three locations to choose from, figuring out which Hester’s to go to can be a little overwhelming. However, nothing quite beats lunch with a view, and that is exactly what the Hester’s inside the Art Museum of South Texas provides. Order that beloved Texas Wave, take a seat on their outside deck, and watch the boats as they float on.
10
WATCH THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT REGATTA RACES
If you ever find yourself wondering what to do on a drab summer Wednesday night, an often unknown or overlooked activity is to head down to the T-heads and experience beautiful sailboats of all sizes racing. You can either sit in the designated bleachers or head to Joe’s Crab Shack and sit outside with a cocktail and watch.
11
TAKE A CARBOMB AT CASSIDY’S IRISH PUB TO START YOUR NIGHT OF DRINKING DOWNTOWN
A shot of Baileys dropping into a full pint of Guinness and then being chugged is quite possibly one of the best ways to start your night of drinking. The next time you head Downtown for a night of bar hopping, make Cassidy’s Irish Pub your first stop. It will give you just the right amount of buzz you’ll need to energize your spirits for the night ahead.
12
MAKE A MOVIE FOR CC 7 DAY FILM FESTIVAL WITH YOUR FRIENDS
You don’t have to be a professional filmmaker to participate in CC 7 Day (although it might help if you’re looking to snag some awards). This annual event permits filmmakers 7 days to create a film that fulfils certain requirements such as a local location, a key line, and a prop that must be incorporated. Even if filmmaking is way out of your wheelhouse, you can attend the full day of viewing at Alamo Drafthouse and watch local shorts on the big screen!

FALL IN LOVE WITH AUSTIN STREET
14

15
GO TO PINT NIGHT AT THE SURF CLUB
16
WANDER THE ART MUSEUM OF SOUTH TEXAS BY YOURSELF
Exploring a museum with friends can be fun, but wandering around aimlessly by yourself for hours is a whole other experience. Carve some time out of your day and allow yourself to get lost in the Art Museum of South Texas. With new exhibits every few months, filled with beautiful and culturally rich pieces of art, it will be more than easy to spend a day here.
A year and some change after hurricane Harvey and Austin Street is still a street every Coastal Bend local should adore. Filled with art galleries, boutique shops, restaurants, and so much more, this staple of Rockport provides almost everyone with something they will enjoy. The arts and culture scene you’ll encounter when wandering up and down this street is well worth it.
Sometimes, it just doesn’t matter what the easiest route to your destination is, Ocean Drive is the preferred road traveled. Driving down this street, with your windows down and the music blaring, often times encourages tears to roll down your face. Whether they are happy or sad tears, it doesn’t matter. It just feels good to let those emotions out amongst those beautiful rows of palm trees.
Two-dollar draft pints every single Tuesday night. That in and of itself should be enough of a description. The Surf Club is a longtime staple in our community and Pint Night has been allowing old and new friends alike to gather and enjoy one another’s company over some crazy cheap beer. While you’re at it, order some battered fries, you won’t regret it.

RIDE THE FERRIS WHEEL AT BUC DAYS
Catching a ride on the Ferris wheel at Buc Days is an absolute must. There is truly no better way to view our beautiful city than from atop the wheel. Not only will you get a bird’s eye view of the carnival in all its glory, but you’ll also see the water and a view of downtown that is pretty hard to beat. Make it a romantic gesture or use it as a way to overcome your fear of heights.
18
STARGAZE AT THE NATIONAL SEASHORE
While we aren’t the biggest city ever, it can still be hard to view the stars under the city lights. Instead, take a drive out to the National Seashore and allow yourself to be awed by your surroundings. Our advice would be to get out there a little before sunset, so you can watch as the sun descends over the dunes and the sky becomes illuminated only by the moon and the stars.
19
GET YOUR KARAOKE ON AT REHAB KARAOKE BAR
Whether your go-to karaoke song is “Don’t Stop Believing” or something more along the lines of a Whitney Houston ballad, Rehab Karaoke Bar has you covered. This is the perfect place to live out all your failed rock star dreams and not feel judged for any of your missed notes. Get a couple drinks deep and show us what you’ve got.
20
WALK THE HARBOR BRIDGE BEFORE YOU NO LONGER CAN
While the new Harbor Bridge will be great for tons of reasons, one can’t help but feel saddened when envisioning our skyline without the silhouette of the Harbor Bridge we all know and love. You still have a couple years to accomplish this, but walking the bridge, end to end, is a must before you no longer can! Will there be a Harbor Bridge Walk when the new bridge is completed? We aren’t sure, but we aren’t taking any chances on missing our opportunity.

21
RIDE A BIRD SCOOTER TO GET TO YOUR DESTINATION
The Bird Scooter is the newest transportation fad in the Coastal Bend and quite possibly one of the most fun ways to get from point A to point B. The coolest part? There is no limit on where you can take these bad boys. Ride them wherever you want and park them on the sidewalk with the kickstand when you’re done!
22
RIDE HORSES ON THE BEACH
23
MAKE A TEAM AND RUN BEACH TO BAY
This might sound like a cheesy rom-com storyline, but really, it’s just a classic Coastal Bend activity to partake in. Horses on the Beach: Corpus Christi, just south of Bob Hall Pier, will take you on a tour of the beach, lasting anywhere between an hour and an hour and a half. You can even book a “Sunset Ride” and take in the beach and all its glory from atop a four-legged friend.
As one of the largest relay marathons in the country, Beach to Bay is something every Coastal Bend local should do at least once. You don’t have to be a seasoned runner to participate! Simply gather five other people and create your team. Come up with a clever name, make some t-shirts, and walk the whole thing for all anyone cares. This race literally takes its participants from the beach to the bay and is such a cool event to be a part of.
24
ORDER A SLICE FROM HOUSE OF ROCK
25
GET A FULLY LOADED BAKED POTATO FROM THE TRADE CENTER
26
GET AN ENTIRE BOX OF KOLACHES FROM S&J’S
We aren’t quite sure why ordering pizza by the slice feels so cool? Maybe because it makes us feel like we are on the streets of New York, visiting a classic pizza shop in a random neighborhood. Whatever the case might be, getting pizza at House of Rock is a real tasty item on this list. As one of the few spots in town that will serve you by the slice, you’ll be thanking us for the recommendation with every bite you take.
Parked right outside the Trade Center, every Saturday and Sunday, there sits a little red train. Inside said train, you’ll find a family working hard to serve the absolute most delicious dish, the fully loaded baked potato. The potato contains butter, corn, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, lemon pepper, chili powder, and more cheese. You can also add sausage or steak. It’s hands down one of the best things you’ll ever eat in the Coastal Bend.
S&J’s kolaches are in a world of their own. Its perfect outside is just the right combination of buttery, salty, and sweet. The inside, filled with cheese and your choice of meat, oozes out and satisfies every single one of your taste buds. We promise we aren’t exaggerating when we say you’re going to want to get an entire box of these to take with you when you leave.
27
ATTEND POPS IN THE PARK
This is one of those events you’ve probably always heard about, but maybe haven’t actually had the chance to attend yet. This year make it a must-attend occasion. The Corpus Christi Symphony pairs their wonderful music with a firework show, filling the night sky with vivid colors. It is quite an extraordinary experience and totally family friendly.

GO TO A COMEDY SHOW AT MESQUITE ST.
Located right in the heart of Downtown Corpus Christi, Mesquite St. has been a staple in the ever-growing comedy and stand up scene in town. Every week you’ll catch national touring comedy acts bringing the laughs. An added bonus? While you’re catching a show, you can also grub on their delicious food!

TAKE A GHOST TOUR OF THE LEXINGTON
During the month of October, the bravest of souls board the USS Lexington to explore the ship in all its spooky glory. The tour will take you through dark corridors, creaky hatchways and allow you to experience unimaginable sights, screams, and sounds. It might not sound super scary, but trust us, this is not for the faint of heart.
30
FIND YOUR GO-TO BREAKFAST TACO JOINT AND BECOME A REGULAR
It’s no secret, we Coastal Bend locals love our tacos. Heck, our entire November issue revolved around the food item. But finding the perfect taqueria that suits all your needs is quite important. So, find your go-to spot and become a regular! You’ll feel connected and known, you’ll eat a great taco, and you’ll be supporting a local business. Wins all around!

BREAK OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND TAKE A FLOATING DOG YOGA CLASS
When you live in a beach town, it is almost inevitable for usual land activities to make their way to the water. Next time you’re looking for a yoga class to partake in, try out a session with Floating Dog! This unique approach to yoga allows participants to go through the normal flows atop a floating paddle board. There are even classes where your pups are welcomed!
32
ATTEND THE ROCKPORT ART FESTIVAL
There are tons of festivals in the Coastal Bend area year round. However, there is something about the Rockport Art Festival that sets itself apart from the others. The city of Rockport has always been a hub for the arts, and for this festival they pull out all the stops. Rows and rows of artists, vendors, live music, food trucks, and more.
33
BUY THAT NEW HOUSE PLANT YOU’VE BEEN WANTING AT THE BOTANICAL GARDEN’S ANNUAL BIG BLOOM PLANT SALE
The Botanical Gardens is a true gem of the Coastal Bend. You can visit any time of year and be mesmerized by the nature inside its gates. However, every spring they host their annual BIG BLOOM Plant Sale where each visitor can enter the gardens for just one dollar. Inside you’ll find rows and rows of plants for sale, a butterfly release, tons of local vendors, and so much more.
34
ORDER A HUG IN A MUG FROM COFFEE WAVES
It could just be because of the name, but there is nothing more comforting than a Hug in a Mug. This deliciously cozy drink combines chai, soymilk, and coconut to make the perfect beverage. Order it hot or iced and allow the flavors to wrap themselves around you and give you a hug.
35
PLAY A GAME OF GIANT CHESS AT BUS
Playing bar games is always a fun activity to partake in when out drinking with friends, but when the games are five times their normal size, things get taken up a notch. Grab a friend and play a game of giant chess at BUS (or giant checkers, giant Jenga, or giant Connect Four).
36
EAT RAW, OPEN SHELL OYSTERS AT WATER STREET OYSTER BAR
Even if oysters aren’t really your thing, every Coastal Bend local should attempt to eat them at least once. Water Street Oyster Bar has some pretty great ones (which would explain why it’s in the name). Order a dozen and spruce them up with horseradish, fresh lemons, and a dash of Tabasco sauce. Even if you don’t enjoy the experience, at least you can say you’ve tried it!
37
41
GRAB A DRINK AT MIKEL MAYS ON BOB HALL PIER AFTER A DAY AT THE BEACH
SEE LITERAL JAW DROPPING WORKS OF ART MADE FROM SAND AT THE TEXAS SANDFEST
After a long and sweaty day at the beach, nothing beats an ice-cold adult beverage. Mikel Mays, which sits pretty at the top of the pier, is a longtime Coastal Bend favorite. When visiting the establishment, you’ll always be greeted by friendly faces and unbeatable views. Plus, they have a new drink special every single day. Yes, you read that correctly.
10-foot-tall sand sculptures are something we common folk might not ever be able to create, but walking the entire length of the beach, which is lined with sculpture after sculpture, is good enough. Try not to have your jaw dropped as you gaze upon these magnificent works of art made completely out of sand. Every April, rain or shine, this event should be on your Coastal Bend bucket list.
38
DISCOVER THE CHAPEL ON THE DUNES IN PORT ARANSAS
High up on a sand dune in Port Aransas, sits the tiniest white chapel. Built in the late 1930s by Aline B. Carter, the Chapel on the Dunes is a true Coastal Bend treasure. Inside the white structure, you’ll find beautiful paintings floor to ceiling, all designed by Aline herself. The chapel is truly a sight that will take your breath away, both with its presence and its story.
39
PLAY A FRIENDLY (OR NOT SO FRIENDLY) GAME OF VOLLEYBALL AT DEWEY’S BEER GARDEN
A little friendly competition never hurt anybody. Gather a group of people together and play a game (or five) of volleyball at Dewey’s Beer Garden. Even if volleyball isn’t really your thing, they have tons of other activities like horseshoes, giant Jenga, corn hole, dodgeball, and more!
40
GET A DOZEN DONUTS FROM GATES DONUT SHOP
Are you even a true local if you’ve never woken up early enough to grab a dozen donuts from Gates? This local donut stand is a Corpus Christi staple and never disappoints. The only trick is making sure you get there before they sell out!
42
PARTICIPATE IN A BEACH CLEAN-UP
Living in a beach town, we should all take it upon ourselves to participate in a beach clean-up from time to time. Taking care of our beaches means taking care of our home! There are tons of organizations in town that host regularly scheduled clean-ups at each of the beaches in our area. Take your family and make a fun, yet impactful, day out of it.
43
EAT A BOWL OF POBLANO SOUP FROM NUEVO CAFÉ
There is no soup quite like the poblano soup at Nuevo Café. It will leave you sniffling from the heat it contains, but it is well worth it. Their homemade croutons that are placed ever so gracefully atop the bowl of creamy soup add the perfect crunch to this delicious Corpus staple.
44
WATCH THE BLUE ANGELS FROM OSO PIER
The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels make an annual appearance in the Coastal Bend as a part of the Wings Over South Texas Air Show. The best seat in the house can be found at Oso Pier. It’s in the perfect location to watch the Angels as they zip through the sky for a memorable performance.

SPEND A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF TIME IN THE JELLYFISH ROOM AT THE TEXAS STATE AQUARIUM
It might be because of the intense ultra-violet lighting and the lack of any type of natural light, but when you are in the “Tentacles” exhibit at the Texas State Aquarium, it feels as though you have taken a deep dive into the ocean. Several species of jellyfish call this room home, allowing guests to view the floating phantoms up close and personal.
46
TAKE THE FAMILY TO WATCH A MOVIE AT THE COLE PARK AMPHITHEATER
The Bay Jammin’ Concert & Cinema Series is one of the coolest summer activities in the Coastal Bend. Every Thursday and Friday during June and August, you can head to the Cole Park Amphitheater to catch a show or movie screening. The live music ranges from classic rock to jazz, and the films are always family-friendly. Bring your friends, your kids, your dog, your snacks, and your lawn chairs, and you’ll be set for the perfect evening.
47
TOUR THE OLD BAYVIEW CEMETERY
Did you know the oldest federal military cemetery in Texas is right in our own backyard? That sounds a little spooky, but really, it’s jampacked with rich history. Lined with mesquite trees winding down the pathways, the cemetery is home to the remains of military veterans and the earliest settlers of Corpus Christi. Wander around by yourself or take a tour; either way, you’ll learn a whole lot about Corpus’ history.

Seaweed gets a bad “wrap.” It doesn’t smell very good, it’s slimy and when swimming in an ocean or pond, it can wrap around our ankles in a very scary way. However, seaweed is extremely beneficial to the human body. Harvested in seawater, seaweeds can be considered nature’s most complete and balanced nutrient. All of the earth’s minerals, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and phyto-hormones are found in abundance. Certain seaweeds contain essential nutrients that are in perfect proportion and percentage for the human body. The body recognizes it as concentrated whole food, allowing ease of assimilation. We know that we receive the oxygen we breathe from plants, however, were you aware that 75% of the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the alga on our planet while only 25% comes from land plants? We can achieve a higher concentration of oxygen and whole nutrition when using seaweeds, thus assisting in better circulation. The organic iodine found in seaweeds helps to stimulate the metabolism and Is great for weight loss. Organic iodine is an essential element that we need to live. It has also been found to leach out inorganic iodide, a synthetic form of iodine, which is considered a harmful allergen. Iodized table salt is a predominant source of inorganic iodide. In spa therapies it is essential to detoxify so that we have a “clean canvas” with which to work. The only way detoxification can happen is to infuse the system with oxygen and nutrition. Stimulation of our lymph system, one of our primary detoxifying systems, by seaweeds is evident in the 46 The Bend
healthy look and increased tone seen after application of the seaweed. The seaweeds provide us with an abundance of both elements needed for detoxification and renewal - oxygenation and remineralization! The natural process of ionic penetration allows an immediate 40% absorption of trace elements, minerals, vitamins and amino acids into the skin tissue. This process of organic chemical attraction allows nutrient infusion for four to twenty-four hours after application. At the very least, firming and toning is an incredible benefit. The appropriate amounts of calcium and magnesium have been proven to bring balance to the nervous system, which has an initial and direct impact on all other systems in the body. Specific seaweeds contain a high level of calcium and magnesium, which feeds our nervous system creating a happier, less stressed state all around. When we are consciously providing the nutrients needed to support our body, we provide a platform to reinforce our immunity, sustain health and well-being. We are made of the same organic chemical elements as the seaweed and because of this synergy, we have the perfect tools to nourish the body inside and out from a pure, concentrated whole food perspective. Talking Dietary Misconceptions
“The easiest way to start is to read labels and become motivated to understand what is in your food.”
Are we doing more harm or good? By: Julieta Hernandez Photos by: Rachel Benavides
D
r. Desiree Purcell, functional nutritionist, works with patients on health consultations and dietary advice. Her beat is to examine the importance of eating for the mind, body, and spirit, and show people how to get the most benefit from their food.
“It really is important to know your body and understand that some fad diets may actually be dangerous to you or exacerbate symptoms that you already have, like depression, anger, or mood swings,” she says. “It’s important to know your diet and the psychology of the food that you’re eating.” THE VEGAN DIET “One of the biggest misconceptions of the vegan diet is that you’re not getting enough nutrients, you’re not getting enough protein, and you’re not getting enough of your B vitamins,” says Dr. Purcell. “There are many athletes who are champions that get their protein in other ways.” For example, ounce for ounce, kale and broccoli have more protein than a firehouse steak. Many people have misconceptions about iron deficiency, micro and macronutrients, being unable to form muscle, and
48 The Bend
ending up weak. However, if the diet is done correctly, these things will not become issues. “The easiest way to start is to read labels and become motivated to understand what is in your food.” Consulting with a practitioner is advised, as the body isn’t supposed to change overnight. Dr. Purcell advises those wanting to try a vegan diet to find replacements and explore their options before making the transition. THE PALEO DIET In the Paleo diet, Dr. Purcell recommends getting to know your body. Yes, eating less pre-packaged and processed food is a positive step. However, the Paleolithic diet should not be centered on red meat and eggs, even if that’s the most authentic “caveman way”. “This comes with really getting to know the diet, and making sure you aren’t cutting out any food groups as a whole,” Dr. Purcell recommends. Even when cutting a whole lot out, it’s still important to make sure you’re leaving in some essentials.
THE KETO DIET
RAW FOOD DIET
The Keto diet is familiar to Dr. Purcell as well as other dieticians. The idea of consuming low carbs and high fats, and whether or not this method will benefit your body in the long run is heavily dependent on the dieter’s unique epigenetics.
Low in calories, high in fiber, and based in primarily whole-plant foods makes the raw food diet another strong detox choice. But as with any diet, Dr. Purcell recommends a steady base of knowledge before delving into this one.
“What are good fats, and what are bad fats for your body?” Dr. Purcell asks. “I’d encourage blood work to be done for this to really be effective.”
“It can be a nutritionally inadequate and highly restrictive plan, if a person does not have the fresh food or monetary sources readily available,” she says.
While eliminating carbs, dieters should ask what would replace them. Staying aware of potassium, magnesium and sodium levels is crucial during a Keto run. Unbalancing your body during Ketosis can throw your entire system off if you aren’t careful!
There are also some superfoods that can’t be eaten raw, for example certain legumes and whole grains. Making sure you’re getting enough alternative protein and are well rounded in your raw food choices is important.
INTERMITTENT FASTING
Any diet is not one size fits all, according to Dr. Purcell. All diets can be safe with proper consultation and preparation. The reasons behind your diet choices are bigger influencers than you might think. It’s essential to remember that thin does not equal healthy, and that not all fruits and vegetables are totally good for you. Also, not all foods that we consider unhealthy are actually that bad for you.
According to Dr. Purcell, this is where the psychology of food comes into play. Fasting shouldn’t be a dietary whim. It’s important for the participant to have a reason and specific goal for fasting. If done properly, fasting can provide detoxification for your body, which in turn, will clear your mind and emotions. Precaution must be taken with fasting, and it should not be done for longer periods of time than necessary. Learning how long and how often fasting will benefit you is advised before attempting to do so.
In dieting, knowledge is power. To meet your dietary goals in a realistic way, speaking with an expert like Dr. Purcell can set you on the right track tailored to your own body’s consumption style.
Staying hydrated is also vital to this process.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS TO REMOVE UNWANTED FAT?
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED BY LIPOSUCTION?
The proven techniques include liposculpture and liposuction and certain injections. Methods that include application of cold to the skin or LASERs are not very predictable or proven. And moreover those techniques are usually more expensive than surgery. The newer techniques that we use give you dramatic results with a short down time. Please refer to our website and instagram to see pre and post photographs.
The stomach, flanks (love handles), back, chest, neck, bra-roll areas, thighs, arms, and the buttocks can be treated by liposuction.
CAN LIPOSUCTION HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT? Liposuction is not a weight loss technique. It is useful to optimize body shape and contours after you are close to your desired weight. In other words liposuction is for areas such as the abdomen, love handles, or neck that are still present after you have reached your desired weight.
52 The Bend
HOW LONG DOES THE RECOVERY TAKE? It is an outpatient procedure so you go home after the procedure. Most can return to work three to four days after surgery and back to the gym in one to two weeks. You will be wearing a compression garment and we see you the next day to give you massage instructions and to make sure you are doing well. It is best to continue to wear the compression garments and have the massage three times a day for six weeks.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS? You will see results immediately, with a significant improvement. There will also be some swelling that then slowly decreases over the next few weeks with compression garments, and regular massages. For a first time liposculpture patient, the final results are seen at six weeks and for a repeat liposculpture patient the final results take 6- 12 weeks.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION? To provide the best result safe and effectively I prefer my patients to be within 15 pounds of their goal weight, with a BMI under 30 and in generally good health. Liposuction does not correct loose skin so if there is loose skin involved, liposuction may not be the best option for you.

HOW IS PERIMENOPAUSE DIFFERENT FROM MENOPAUSE?
HOW DOES MENOPAUSE AFFECT LIBIDO AND SEXUAL FUNCTION?
WHY DO WOMEN’S BLADDERS GET WEAKER WITH AGE?
Menopause, by definition, is the cessation of menstrual cycles for 12 months. The average age in the United States is 51.4, with a range of 45 to 55 for most women. Perimenopause includes the years leading up to menopause and on average starts 4-5 years before periods actually stop. Due to the hormonal changes during this time women may experience irregular cycles, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, sleep disturbances, mood changes, weight gain and “brain fog”. Fortunately, lab testing can be performed to measure hormone levels and tailor treatment options to minimize these symptoms and help women feel more like themselves.
Due to decreased levels of estrogen and testosterone during menopause many women find that their libido has taken a nosedive. For some women, the sex drive is fine, but the ability to “cross the finish line” becomes a problem. Common complaints include low sexual desire, difficulty attaining or maintaining sexual arousal, decrease in lubrication, pain with intercourse and difficulty achieving an orgasm and decreased intensity. Lower testosterone levels are responsible for the decrease in libido and lower estrogen levels contribute to vaginal dryness/pain with intercourse, thinning of the vaginal tissue, decreased blood flow to the vaginal tissue and weakened pelvic floor muscles. Fortunately, there are new ways to deliver therapeutic levels of hormone replacement, one of which is bio-identical hormone pellet therapy which can help increase libido and moisture. There are also new non-invasive, comfortable in office treatments to improve vaginal moisture, increase blood flow to vaginal tissues, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, stimulate nerve regeneration, and tighten the vaginal canal. Having a fulfilling sex life after menopause is now a reality for many women due to new treatment options.
Hormonal changes during menopause contribute to loss of elasticity in vaginal tissues, weakening of the pelvic floor muscles that support the urethra and bladder and thinning of the lining of the urethra, (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). Menopause isn’t always the reason why women have less bladder control. Pelvic floor muscles may naturally weaken with age or from injuries as a result of child birth. Women may experience stress incontinence and leak urine when they cough, sneeze, laugh or lift something heavy. Urge incontinence is when the need to urinate comes fast and unexpectedly and makes it difficult to get to the bathroom in time. Normalizing hormone levels can help maintain bladder control and there are now new non-invasive treatments that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and stimulate nerve regeneration. Women do not have to live with the inconvenience and embarrassment of incontinence.

Sometimes teeth need to be removed due to fracture or infection. Dental implants act as a root replacement when an adult tooth is removed. The two greatest enemies of implant healing are smoking and diabetes. Thankfully, a majority of people who smoke or have diabetes can undergo treatments or take medicine to resolve their condition. Dental implants are over 90% successful in healthy adults. We have achieved this result in all age categories. Some patients are teenagers replacing teeth that never formed, some have lost their teeth many years ago and want to solidify their loose dentures, but most need the replacement of a single tooth that can no longer be saved. No matter the cause, we are here to guide you through the process. Dental implant surgery has become a predictable and routine procedure in our office. Most patients allow us to prescribe sedation medication to relax during the procedure. Longevity of the dental implant can improved by computer guided surgery, skilled clinician and regular cleanings from a dental hygienist.

DEAR DOCTOR, I AM A DIABETIC AND I HAVE BURNING, NUMBNESS, AND TINGLING IN MY FEET, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN DE DONE ABOUT THAT ? It sounds like you have something called painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy which is a very common complication of diabetes. An elevated blood glucose level is the main cause of these symptoms, high glucose levels can act as toxins to the small nerve fibers. Weight loss, diet, and exercise can help control the symptoms by lower your bodies glucose levels. There are a variety of pain relieving medications called neuropathic agents that are specific for nerve pain and a couple specific for diabetic nerve pain. Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Nortriptyline are a few examples of neuropathic medications. Topical treatments such as lidocaine patches and creams are also available. Infrared light therapy aka Anodyne Physical Therapy can also be used to improve circulation and pain. Lastly, In more severe cases there is an implantable device called Spinal Cord Stimulation that can help. There are options out there so please ask your doctor.

DO YOU EXPERIENCE DISCOMFORT FROM VARICOSE VEINS? UNDERSTANDING REFLUX DISEASE. Health leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when those valves that keep blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart no longer function, causing the blood to pool in the legs, and leading to these signs and symptoms: varicose veins, leg or ankle swelling, leg heaviness and fatigue, leg pain aching or cramping, burning or itching of the skin, restless legs, skin changes or rashes, ulcers, open wounds, or sores. Venous reflux disease is a progressive medical condition, and if left untreated, may worsen over time and develop into a more serious form of venous disease called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). More than 30 million people are affected by varicose veins or CVI in the US., with only 1.9 million seeking treatment annually, leaving the vast majority undiagnosed and untreated. Without treatment, those with the disease may experience the progressive symptoms described above. Fortunately, with proper treatment, those outcomes are preventable.

fter deciding to leave DC, Suzette and David James knew they wanted to find a home in Texas. With so many houses and neighborhoods to choose from, they agreed that a decent sized, one story home near the water was tops on their list. As they set out to find their dream home, they learned of a gorgeous residence in Lamar Park that just happened to be on the market.
It was imperative that the house express the family’s humor and endearing eccentricities while simultaneously radiating the comfort they bring to the table. I really wanted our house to be fun, welcoming, and worldly. “We have traveled all over the word and wanted to express some of that culture through our art and furniture,” says Suzette. After simplifying and opening up spaces, the house exuded a clean, fresh, fun aura that brought the vision of Suzette’s dream home to life.
Most people find the switch from fast-paced urban living to a small town, community-centered lifestyle a bit strenuous. For the Jameses, making this adjustment definitely had its ups and downs, but they soon grew to love and call the Coastal Bend home. After living in a condo, where Suzette’s three kids all shared a bedroom, a 3,000 square foot house gave them a whole new project to take on.
Artistically, the home is rife with color and local talent. The Jameses, active supporters of Coastal Bend artists, display diverse pieces from Caro Jackson of Rockport along with vibrant pieces from Daryl Tanner, Susie Grossman, and Chelsea Beck, all from Corpus Christi. The key piece is a commissioned painting by Diane Weiner, which incorporates chickens, succulents, and the children’s names in bright, happy colors. Artwork from family travels, including pieces from Thailand, Bali, Argentina, and Brazil, add to the eclectic decor, allowing the animated personality of the James family to shine through.
To assist with this transition, Suzette and David enlisted the help of designer and architect, Court Koester, to kickstart what ended up being a very collaborative renovation.

The celebration of individuality stands out the most in the Jameses’ home. Each area of the house reflects the likes of each family member while maintaining a clean, simple, yet fun vibe. Suzette had her heart set on a long dining room table because she loves to entertain family and friends. She was determined to do whatever it took to make the table fit. With Suzette’s vision and Court’s talents, the project was underway. The logical choice was to remove the wall separating the living area from the kitchen. In its place, she added long brick columns that still separate the two areas but allow accessibility through the open floor plan. The best part - the table would now fit. The long, teak wood dining table from BABA, reminiscent of furniture in Indonesia, is accented with Tolix chairs in kid friendly shades of red, black, yellow, and blue. The vintage charms of the dining room table combined with the pops of color add a quirky touch to the area. Hanging from the ceiling is a geometric chandelier, creating an iconic contemporary setting. Every party host needs a spacious, user-friendly kitchen. Suzette’s is equipped with modern appliances, quartzite countertops, and two dishwashers. The bright teal interior of the open cabinets pop in contrast to the white exterior, while stainless steel appliances add an appealing touch. The size and design of the kitchen gives
60 The Bend
Suzette ample space to engage in family conversations while cleaning or cooking. Even the kids got in on the decorating. Their bedrooms are decorated like something straight out of a catalog. At the request of all three of her children, Suzette added the “sky beds”. Sky beds are loft beds, with the legs removed, suspended from the ceiling. The beds are a bright, fun shade of white with bedding in cheerful colors and prints. The sky beds are brilliant, and maximize the play area for the kids. Let’s not forget about the hammock swings! It’s like having their very own floating beanbag - super comfy and super cool! “Having three young kids, inevitably, things will get broken and sofas and rugs will get stained,” says Suzette. “But we want to enjoy our decor with the little blemishes they aquire over time.” She wants to look at the tiny handprints on the sofa and be reminded of her girls doing handstands, or find Nerf bullets in the couch and smile at the thought of her son. What was previously a sitting room was transformed into a small workspace for David, a software developer. The French doors allow for accessibility and comfort but still give him enough privacy to work.
Farther along is the guest room, complete with a creatively designed stage for the girls to play dress up. The closet doors behind the stage open to reveal an array of costumes, allowing them to achieve celebrity status, even if for a few moments. Every corner and every room in the Jameses’ home reflects the spirit of each family member. They’ve blended in with the congenial vibe of the Coastal Bend and hit their stride, nailing a personally reflective infusion of edge, warmth, and good humor. “I love our house, our street, and the Corpus Christi community” Suzette says with her final thoughts. “I feel so blessed that God has called us to this South Texas city and it has been such a delight to discover all the unique hidden gems, talented people, and beautiful views. We couldn’t imagine making new memories anywhere else.”

The Flavor of America Planting a Virginia lawn in your Coastal Bend backyard By: Justin Butts Photos by: Rachel Benavides
T
he most popular vegetable in America today is the tomato. It’s hard to imagine a backyard garden without a few ripe red tomatoes on the vine. But for much of our country’s history, the most popular vegetable in America was the turnip!
The Pilgrims planted turnips in their first gardens at Plymouth. The settlers at Jamestown brought turnip seeds as a core provision. Turnips, which grow easily and well, even in the poorest of soils, have long been a staple crop of frontier farmers.
+Turnip Fields Called “Virginia Lawns”
+Turnips as Animal Fodder
Turnips are highly nutritious, rich in vitamins K and C, as well as calcium and other minerals. Turnips supplied vital nutrition to pioneer families during the bleak winter months when little else would grow. To store their turnips, farmers simply left them in the ground all winter, to dig out of the snow as needed. This practice was so common in early America that tur-

nip fields were called “Virginia lawns”.
+How to Plant Turnips Now is the time to plant turnips in your garden. First, prepare a wide bed with welltilled soil. Then, use the wooden end of a garden rake to draw parallel lines across the width of the bed four inches apart and a quarter inch deep. Sprinkle the tiny black turnip seeds down each line and gently rake them into the soil. Thin the turnips to a final spacing of four inches. Sauté your thinnings; they are some of the best greens of the winter. Harvest the round roots when their tops show three to four inches across.

+The Best Turnip Varieties The easiest turnip variety for South Texas is the purple top. But for a real treat, try the Japanese shogoin for turnips so tasty you can eat them like apples. Turnips bring old-fashioned flavor to your garden, the flavor of America back when everyone grew their own food. They are nutritious, easy to grow, and like tomatoes, there is room in any well-kept garden for a few good turnips.

Downtown’s Newest Neighbor Creative agency leaves historic midtown location to set new roots in the booming Marina Arts District
T
By: Kirby Tello Photos by: Rachel Benavides
he movement for downtown to reinvent itself is roaring. For the first time in decades, it seems, there is a real upswing in the changes and improvements being made on the Bayfront. Not only are changes happening, but also the people of Corpus Christi are flocking downtown to experience the new Marina Arts District. Many businesses have contributed to these changes by investing their dollars into trendy restaurant and bar concepts; however, some of the shift the area is benefiting from is happening behind closed doors. While it may not be physically seen, the residents of Corpus Christi are most definitely benefiting from their commitment to rebuilding downtown.
68 The Bend
One such business is the creative advertising agency, MDR. Since 1974, MDR occupied that quaint house on Santa Fe Street across from Sugarbakers. While they had been a long-time fixture in the neighborhood, their team finally reached a point where they outgrew their home. Stephen Rybak, owner and Chief Creative Officer, says, “After 45 years of building history there, it was a big and tough decision to move.” Rybak, having worked with MDR for 15 years, feels as though he grew up there in a way. “It felt comfortable and clients knew it well.” So, when the time came to scout locations, Rybak knew MDR would benefit from downtown and its new energy. Plus, their brand could give back to downtown by adding the agency’s creative history to the rebirth of the soul of our city.
“In doing a little more research, we learned that the front of the building, where we are now, was the original Nixon Building – the original high-rise built in Corpus Christi in 1927.”
MDR now occupies the 11th floor of the Wilson Building located at 545 N. Upper Broadway. Rybak recalls that the Wilson building didn’t feel like the right fit, initially. “In doing a little more research, we learned that the front of the building, where we are now, was the original Nixon Building – the original high-rise built in Corpus Christi in 1927,” he explains. He also considered buying and rehabbing a building downtown that would perhaps give MDR some street appeal, but some of the buildings were too sleek and didn’t feel like them. The right fit was most important for the MDR team. Upon learning even more history about the Wilson Building, for instance uncovering the original list of tenants from the local library, tons of character started to emerge from the structure. At that point, the big move felt right. MDR did a complete demolition of their newly acquired space and now work in a creative, open concept environment. “Our staff is young, and they expect different ways of working,” says Rybak. “The previous place was getting old, and it would have taken too much money to remodel it.” Not only has the move improved the way the MDR team works, but they also have access to many more amenities. If an employee wants to get away from the group and work in solitude for a couple of hours, they can take their laptop and work from Green Light Coffee. Plus, there are plenty of new lunch options from which to choose.
Some of their clients took a little while to get used to the change. The street parking and one-ways can be hard to navigate, if you’re not used to it. All in all, it wound up being even more convenient for clients. The highway is more accessible, making it easier to get to some of the main arteries of the city. MDR feels confident in the direction downtown is going. With Alyssa Barrera, the new Executive Director of the Downtown Management District, bringing bounds of energy to all of the various improvement projects downtown, Rybak feels the city is in good hands. The creative agency is looking forward to continuing to create magic for their clients in their new space and contributing to diversifying downtown’s economy.

First Steps in 2019 This is it…2019 is officially in the books. No pressure, but there’s a real opportunity here for life-goal assessment, because the countdown to 2020 has begun. What did you promise yourself you’d achieve by this upcoming milestone? Did you want to get that promotion, take that vacation, ensure that the kids are on track for educational opportunity? At Braselton Homes, we have made our own goals – building Green Homes, neighborhoods centered around family life with access to trails/playgrounds/water features, perfecting floor plans to maximize space and promote happy family life, protecting our local environment and making our hometown grow sustainably and beautifully. And while we can’t help you with that promotion, vacation, or kid’s math, there is one goal that we can help you achieve. Building the home of your dreams for you and your family. What better goal is there than achieving the American Dream? Spend time with our team talking about all Braselton Homes has to offer, and before you ring in 2020 you could be living in a beautiful, modern, ecofriendly, sustainable home that is designed to perfectly fit your family’s lifestyle.

CUISINE FARM TO TABLE 78 THE DRINK 82 DINING GUIDE 85 THE DISH 88
What’s Inside After recalling a fond memory from an attempted trip to Greece, Justin Butts asked his wife to see if she could re-create one of the best meals he had ever eaten. Kayla, being the magic maker she is, whipped up the perfect Bulgarian Banitsa.

No Roads to Greece
The re-creation of a fond memory By: Justin & Kayla Butts Photos by: Rachel Benavides
T
he idea was to drive south into Greece through the Rhodope Mountains. Alexander traveled these mountains on horseback, but I would take a yellow Volga.
The matron of the guesthouse in Sofia rented me the Volga, a relic of Soviet automobile manufacturing, for twenty Euros per day, cash, and no contract. She said if it broke down to abandon it, but she would keep my hundred Euro deposit. I drove south through Philippopolis, founded by Philip the One-Eyed, father of Alexander the Great. I passed the Gypsy quarter unscathed because it was five in the morning, and the banditi were sleeping. I then traveled down through Smolyan and Koshnitsa. On the map, I could not find any roads cutting south through the mountains. I stopped at pubs in some of the sullen villages along the road for help with directions. The architecture was a mix of abandoned Cold War mining factories, squat two-level shops, and a few stone Orthodox churches that had somehow survived the two World Wars. In the smoky pubs, old men in coats sitting at the booths or tables would lean over my map as I traced my finger down to the Greek coast on the Aegean Sea, due south, straight through the Rhodopes. The Bulgarian language is written in Cyrillic. Translating a single place name was a chore, much less following the bony fingers and lit cigarettes of these old men as they argued with each other in gibberish and turned the map every which way. No one in those mountains spoke English. The answer always came back the same. A wave of the hand, no. Tapping the map, no. No roads to Greece. Deeper into the mountains, the road narrowed into switchbacks along perilous ledges, some of them sheer drops of 600 feet straight down, but there were no visible views because of the mist. Finally, the road

ended at a village below a peak shrouded in clouds. Everything was covered in snow. There was a post office, a few small shops, and a beautiful stone inn, maybe 200 years old. Inside the inn, the grand room had a low ceiling with a Franklin stove at one end and a few small tables with tiny wooden chairs. A man and a woman sat across from each other reading at one of the tables and looked up at me when I came in. I showed them the map. They smiled and shook their heads. The gentleman stood up and pantomimed saddling a horse and pointed out the window to the snowy pass and pretended to ride. They both laughed and the woman motioned him to sit down. Alexander conquered the world, but I guess he couldn’t get a road through those mountains. The woman went to the kitchen and brought back a plate of banitsa, a sort of egg and cheese phyllo pastry, and hot black coffee. I ate the banitsa at the table by the window while the man and woman sat behind me in silence. Kayla, with her gift for recipes, recreated this dish from my description and many loving experiments. She has somehow, impossibly, made this banitsa even better than I remember it. Every person should have this dish at least once in their life. This is the magic of really good food. One bite and I am back in that stone inn on a cold January day with the fire crackling in the Franklin stove, watching through the window as the snow falls on the Volga. Then, the snow really starts and the scene fades to white. Except it is so much better now, because then I was alone, and now Kayla is beside me, and we can go anywhere.

BULGARIAN BANITSA MAKES 8 SERVINGS Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Ingredients: 1 (8 oz) roll of frozen phyllo dough, thawed in the refrigerator 8 tbsp unsalted butter, plus 2 tbsp to brush on crust
FILLING: I cup full-fat Bulgarian yogurt ½ tsp baking soda 5 eggs, plus 1 more to brush on crust 8 oz feta, broken into small pieces 1 cup frozen spinach, thawed, with excess moisture removed ½ cup sun-ripened tomatoes, packed ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper Optional topping: ½ tsp each white and black sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x9” casserole dish. Melt 10 tbsp butter, setting aside 2 tbsp for later. In a large bowl, mix filling ingredients together. Pull off a single sheet of phyllo and place it flat on a lightly floured surface. Brush melted butter in a thin layer over the entire surface of phyllo. Add another sheet of phyllo and repeat. Repeat again, until you have a stack three phyllo sheets thick. On the third sheet, add a thin layer of filling covering the entire sheet. Starting on a long side, roll the phyllo into a Swiss roll and place into greased dish. Repeat these steps, placing the rolls end to end in a concentric circle, until no filling or phyllo sheets remain. In a small bowl, beat together one egg and reserved butter. Brush egg mixture onto the top of the banitsa and sprinkle on sesame seeds, as desired. Bake for 40 minutes. Serve warm with a side of Bulgarian yogurt.

for coffee, is how she spent her time before conjuring up this idea. Susan shared it all through her writing and photography. A few years later, she opened up a coffee shop with a name similar to her Instagram handle and a logo that incorporates her obsession with Harry Potter. The Coffee Muggle looks forward to hosting events, different than those found in most coffee shops, such as a Dungeons and Dragons throw down once a week, Harry Potter trivia nights, and even astrology workshops.

usan Almaguer’s passion for both coffee and Harry Potter is what inspired The Coffee Muggle, a new coffee shop in the Coastal Bend. Décor replicating the feel of a “Common Room,” and an “I heart Coffee” mural marked with the Deathly Hallows emblem in the center of the heart embrace a love of coffee, fandom, and the acceptance of being different.
The Coffee Muggle has partnered with Matcha Konomi and Driftwood Coffee Co. to bring local and unique items such as Pensive: a blue tea made with Matcha Konomi’s butterfly pea flower and steamed milk and honey, Polyjuice: a matcha latte, and Unicorn Blood: purple iced tea with edible glitter. The menu also includes staple items, The Mocha: a drink with Belgium cocoa powder made from scratch, espresso and steamed milk, and The Dementor: Driftwood Co. house coffee, shot of espresso, and a shot of chocolate sauce made in-house. “It’s the strongest and darkest drink, like a dementor,” says Susan with a laugh. Merchandise for the Coffee Muggle is currently in the works. Patrons can look forward to t-shirts, patches, pins, hats, and a special “muggle” coffee blend from Driftwood.
“The vibe I wanted for the shop started by being different. I’m a Potter nerd. When I started off at the other location, people embraced my weirdness. I’ve received donations of Harry Potter stuff and have found a community where people can meet new people and create new friendships,” Susan shares.
“I never thought that this would be a possibility. The fact that people feel welcome here and comfortable and feel like this is their second home. That’s it for me; that’s my goal.”
Susan first shared her love of coffee with the public through her personal social media and blog. Traveling to various coffee shops, striking up friendly conversations with baristas and owners, and wanting to learn more about her passion

However, many are of a certain niche, i.e., western/country, ultra-lounge, Latin, etc. There aren’t many bars that are a cool place for everyone to meet and not be worried about a specific dress code, AND ALSO HAS FOOD! We wanted to give CC a place for people to gather after work, after dinner, whenever, and have a great time.” The Brick’s signature nachos are a must try! f one of your New Year’s resolutions is to learn something new, you have a lot in common with those who walked the halls of our local colleges and universities. For some, this image will bring back memories of a campus mainly consisting of WWII era Navy buildings, coupled with the six new buildings built on Ward Island by 1965. For others, it is a shockingly empty picture of wide-open spaces in a place now bustling with activity and construction. Post WWII, the people of the Coastal Bend knew the area needed an institution of higher learning. With Navy training facilities vacated in several areas after the war, 312 students attended classes at Cuddihy Field in fall 1947. Then called the University of Corpus Christi (UCC), the students moved that

spring to Ward Island after the Navy vacated the radar training facility there. While operating as UCC, enrollment peaked at 996 in 1967. In 1973, the name changed to Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, and state support of the school set off a period of huge growth. In 1977, it became Corpus Christi State University, offering upper level classes to local students. After joining the Texas A&M system and becoming TAMU-Corpus Christi in 1993, the school now fills Ward Island as well as additional acreage on the south side of Corpus Christi. No matter the name on the diploma, there are now tens of thousands of students who have grown and learned on Ward Island in Corpus Christi.
