Honoring the History of a Space

Home base for The Bend’s operations over the last seven years has been nestled inside the Water Street Market in Downtown Corpus Christi. Just as we began wrapping up the production cycle of this issue, we also began the process of relocating our office.

When moving from one space to another, it’s easy to get caught up in the forward momentum associated with change and heading somewhere new. However, I believe an integral part of moving is saying goodbye to the space being left behind — honoring it for what it was, what it provided and the history it housed.

In a lot of ways, this office space has acted as a second home for our team. Late nights and early mornings; hard conversations and problem solving; tears and joyous laughter; birthdays and baby showers; collaborative ideas and “Ah ha!” moments … the list goes on. Personally speaking, I’ve practically grown up

within the walls of 309 N. Water Street, Suite C, and the folks I have co-inhabited this space with over the years have become a family of sorts.

When reading through this month’s cover feature, I couldn’t help but relate the history so intricately intertwined within every corner of this house to the place The Bend has called home for so many years.

Beginning on page 42, contributor Cecile Gottlich beautifully articulates not just the architecture and interior design choices of the home, but the many lives it’s housed and history it’s cultivated. From the original owner and builder, Frank Crook, in 1930 and its second dweller, Jack Stone, in 1984 to the current homeowner, Dee Braman, the structure as it stands today houses so much more than vibrant wallpaper and noteworthy furniture pieces. “That’s what is so special about this home,” Braman shares on page 48. “Every piece of this property has a story.”

It might sound odd to correlate a simple office space to an almost 100-year-old estate housing one of the only original Lord & Burnham greenhouses in the state (more on that on page 45), but the true concept of our dwelling spaces transcends the square footage or the design choices inside.

Call me sentimental, but as I write my last Letter From the Editor inside this office location, I find myself reflecting on the history we’ve cultivated as a team within this space. Though I am excited for a change of scenery— and the waiting memories to be made and stories to be written and shared with you all in our new office—I will always look back on this home away from home at the corner of Water and Lomax Street with a loving fondness and lasting gratitude for the role it played in The Bend’s story.

THE CORPUS CHRISTI-BASED AUTHOR DISCUSSES HER NEW THREE-PART SERIES, HOW SOUTH TEXAS CULTURE SEEPS INTO HER WRITINGS AND MORE

Diana López first put pen to paper when she was in middle school, in the form of a journal entry. “I quickly realized I could write whatever I wanted [in the journal] since it was just for me,” she said. López took little details from her day, asked a “what if” question and let her imagination run wild. These writings, which she refers to as “little fictional scenes,” surely helped set her trajectory to becoming a celebrated author. López wrote her first novel, Sofia's Saints, while obtaining her MFA in creative writing at Texas State University. In 2017, she published Coco: A Story About Music, Shoes and Family, the novel adaptation of the Pixar animated film, Coco. Today, she’s busy promoting her new book, writing and publishing various short stories and serving as the president of the Texas Institute of Letters.

KC: Your new book, Los Monstruos: Felice and the Wailing Woman, is releasing this month. The story reframes lore with a positive feminist representation of the myth of La Llorona. Why was this an important perspective for you to share?

DL: I remember reading about Medea, how she killed her children to punish their father, and I thought, “Wait a minute. That's the story of La Llorona.” But there's another layer to La Llorona, and that's the colonial story — because in most versions, she's a poor woman who dares to have a relationship with a man above her station. Everyone blames her for trying to be better than she was. No one blames the man, and of course, he is the author of the story.

I became hyper-aware of women being portrayed as witches or evil stepmothers or helpless damsels-in-distress. These portrayals ran contrary to the strong women in my life. So I flipped the script by writing La Llorona as a loving mother, as someone misunderstood, as a victim of her community's attitude more than of her runaway lover. For me and I hope for the young people who read my book, this version rings true.

KC: It's the first book of a new series — what does the rest of the Los Monstruos series have in store for readers?

DL: In Felice and the Wailing Woman, we meet two other children of Monstruos, Rooster and Ava. The next two books tell their stories. The second book plays with the legend of the girl who sneaks out at night to go to a dance hall. She meets a handsome stranger and starts dancing with him. She is enthralled, but then she notices his feet. They're chicken feet! That's when she realizes she's dancing with the devil, and at that moment, she disappears. In my version, both boys and girls disappear after dancing with the devil, and our character, Rooster, goes looking for them. The third book will be about Ava, daughter of La Lechuza, the owl-witch.

KC: What specifically about your own culture and personal life experiences do you hope to translate to others through your published works?

DL: My culture and my personal life experiences are very much tied to this landscape of South Texas, and specifically Corpus Christi. I grew up here. It shaped my perspective. I had a wonderful childhood but also moments of feeling confused or indignant when I encountered people who judged me before they knew me, before giving me a chance to show what I can do. After many years away, I came back; I came home. I hope that when people read my books, they feel Corpus Christi in a very tactile way — the smells, the sounds, the voices, even the humidity — but I also want them to meet our city as if it, too, is a person you can befriend.

KC: What do you look to for inspiration when you’re starting a new piece or experiencing writer’s block?

DL: Every person I meet is interesting in

some way. Even when I meet someone who just sits around and does nothing — that's interesting to me. Each one of us is a story, and most of us are several stories. I'm also inspired by the products of people's imagination and labor, their books or paintings or cookies. For me, writer's block doesn't occur because I'm struggling to find an idea for a story; it happens when I encounter something that's preventing me from sitting down to write. It could be a craft or a plot issue, but it could also be life challenges that make it difficult to get into the mindset for writing. My strategies for dealing with writer's block are cleaning the house or going for a long walk. Something about movement centers me and gets me back to work.

KC: You're currently the president of the Texas Institute of Letters (TIL), which will hold its annual awards banquet in Corpus Christi this month for the first time since the Institute was established in 1936. What does it mean for this event to take place here in our community?

DL: This will be the first time the TIL banquet is held in Corpus Christi. We will be presenting the winners of 12 different literary awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, which goes to Beverly Lowry this year. Having the banquet here is special because the TIL has been working hard to celebrate the diversity of Texas literature. This means recognizing more women and people of color, but it also means recognizing that every corner of Texas has its writers. We are working on a few community events. I would love to invite everyone to the Mexican American Studies Center at Del Mar College on April 27 at 5:30 p.m. for a reading by authors Sergio Troncoso and Guadalupe Garcia McCall, and to the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History at 10 a.m. on April 29 for a reading by Texas authors of children's books.

When Hunter needed surgery earlier this year, she knew she’d be limited in what she could do, but luckily, another Fairy Godmother joined the pack. Kacie Stanford, with the help of her partner, Edward “The Rooster” Ketch, took over daily operations to keep the organization running. “I’ve always followed the Facebook page and admired what [Hunter] did, but I didn’t get involved until [her surgery]. I knew that if I didn’t jump in to help, these kids wouldn’t get to go to prom,” Stanford said.

Once upon a time, there were little girls who dreamed of going to their proms, but when the time came, circumstances beyond their control prevented them from enjoying a princess moment. That is, until 2012, when a fairy godmother with a giant heart came to sprinkle fairy dust and make these dreams a reality.

When Teresa Hunter gained custody of her 11-year-old niece, she began purchasing dresses from Goodwill and garage sales to fulfill her daughter’s dreams of playing dress-up. After loaning out those dresses to her daughter’s friends, she became known as the “dress lady” in Rockport, and shortly after, “Rockport’s Fairy Godmother.” Hunter then realized the need for a Fairy Godmother was not only in Rockport, but all throughout the Coastal Bend.

Having experienced financial struggle as a child, Hunter saw herself in many of these kids who were unable to attend formal events for financial reasons. This reflection prompted Coastal Bend Fairy Godmothers, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free prom dress, menswear and accessory loans to school-aged individuals.

“Prom dresses are expensive, in addition to the prom ticket, and it’s isolating to not have the opportunity to attend,” Hunter said. “People think that since these kids can’t afford to attend prom, they don’t need to go, which is not true at all.”

Coastal Bend Fairy Godmothers accept monetary donations, along with formal items in good condition, including prom dresses, tuxedos, heels and rhinestone jewelry. The target audiences are 14-18 years old.

Mary Martinez, one of the original princesses from 2012, is a testament to the profound effect this organization has on young girls. “I grew up in poverty in a house with six siblings, worked two jobs to help pay the bills and missed out on so many other senior events in high school,” she recalled. “Without this organization, I would not have been able to go to prom.” Now, the “Princess turned Fairy Godmother” donates her time to help other students get their magical night at prom.

As wonderful as this organization has been for the community, it's currently struggling with storage space. After losing its space at Rockport-Fulton High School, the non-profit began operating out of climate-controlled storage units, but is still on the hunt for a new home. The Godmothers are hoping to find an affordable boutique-style location to enhance the experience for these kids.

Hunter and Stanford have many great ideas brewing for the future of the non-profit, and are spreading their fairy dust throughout the Coastal Bend to help local students create magical memories.

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Pruitt, also known as “Dr. Nikki”, is a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and holds a degree in biology from Baylor University. After receiving her dental degree, she began a career as a dentist in the U.S. Navy. She completed a residency in general practice dentistry focused on the care of patients with compromised medical needs at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California. After a tour in Okinawa, Japan, she returned to Texas to complete her graduate training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Following her training, she had the opportunity to be the Navy’s pediatric dentist in Sicily, Italy. She returned to Texas after 10 years in the Navy Dental Corps to join Kennedy Dental Care. She remains active in the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, the Southwest Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Texas Association of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Pruitt and her husband, James, have three beautiful daughters that keep them very busy. She often shares the daily chaotic events of her own household with her patients and their families. She knows most of the popular kids TV shows, movies, and toys by default so she can relate well to her young patients. She is actively involved with her church as well as local and international ministries. She enjoys traveling, photography, cooking and most of all, being a wife and mother.

From retiring from the dental field at the height of the pandemic and saying goodbye to the blogging and influencing world to landing my dream job at Cinnamon Shore in August of 2022, I made a promise to myself to only focus on doing things that would spark joy and bring me fulfillment. It’s so important to me to find time in my day to prioritize and take care of myself, and I have found that having a daily routine has helped me add structure to my day and create a healthy balance.

I learned everything I know at a young age from my beautiful mother who taught me the importance of selfcare. I used to love sitting and watching her make natural, homemade scrubs using ingredients like raw honey and aloe vera. She has always emphasized the importance of self-care and how feeling good on the outside can directly impact the way that you feel on the inside. I love that as an adult, I can appreciate and implement all of her beauty secrets and advice into my daily routine.

I start every day off with three daily goals: hydrate as much as possible, protect and moisturize my skin with a good SPF and moisturizer and minimize stress. Praying on my way to work and moving my body as much as I can throughout the day helps me manage everyday stress. I look forward to my absolute favorite part of the day: my daily scenic walks by the beach and around the Cinnamon Shore community. I use this time to decompress and reflect on my day. I try to get at least eight hours of sleep every night; never underestimate a good night’s rest! Getting into the habit of a consistent, adequate sleep schedule is so important and comes with so many health benefits. I also try to make regular visits to my esthetician, Traci Martinez, who has helped me so much throughout my skin journey.

The best advice I can give is that no matter what you may look like on the outside, your most noticeable and beautiful feature will always be having a kind heart that lifts and empowers those around you. While beauty fades with time, people will always remember how you made them feel. In return, life rewards us with the happiness that we sow.

BENEFITS OF ASSISTED STRETCHING AND WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A SESSION

In cultures around the world, the body is viewed as a temple, requiring attention, care and maintenance. Over time, stress builds up in the body, causing muscle contraction and stagnation alongside a myriad of other issues. Stretching has aided professional athletes and ordinary individuals alike by improving body oxygenation, increasing range of motion and providing greater flexibility.

A computer-bound life is likely to prompt the usual hip-flexor tensions, over-arching backs or painful neck strain. Hip flexors, for example, are key to the body’s central and core strength. Stagnation or inactivity in this area causes overcompensation from opposing back muscles. If too tight and contracted, fundamental issues arise, affecting essential communication between nerves and muscles.

An uptick in stress maintenance tools have arrived to aid in such issues. Stretching hubs are unfolding in the marketplace to increased growth and demand, such as Stretch Zone Corpus Christi.

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the small village nestled along the edge of the eponymous lake, is home to fewer than 1,000 people yearround, but it sees tens of thousands of visitors annually. This former playground for Chicago’s wealthy in the age of railroads now welcomes guests from all over the world, many in town for a race weekend at Road America, a professional track just outside of town.

The emphases on agriculture, fishing, hunting and sports, combined with incredibly friendly locals and the presence of so many Native nations (Menominee, Oneida, Ojibwe, etc.), create a resonance that reminds us of home.

This is outdoorsman country with some of the nation’s best hunting and fishing different from what Coastal Bend residents might be used to: white-tailed deer, elk, bear, duck, pheasant and dove, as well as northern pike, perch, largemouth bass, walleye and muskies.

There is golf at Quit Qui Oc, hiking along the Kettle Moraine on rolling Ice Age trails, swimming, boating and stand-up paddleboards on the lake, even go-carts and UTVs at Road America. This is where you go to play, especially if you want to play outside.

The Potawatomi first called Elkhart Lake “Meshay-way-o-deh-ni-bis” (or Great Heart Lake) after its shape resembling an elk’s heart.

WHERE TO STAY

The Osthoff Resort on the shore of the lake is a AAA Four Diamond destination. The 245 suites are large and well-appointed, including jacuzzies, balconies, kitchenettes, fireplaces, etc. Many are privately owned and made available in the rental pool when owners are not using them. They’re literally homes away from home, not just hotel rooms. The Osthoff is also home to Aspira Spa, one of the nation’s best, with massages, mani-pedis, facials and a sacred waters massage. You can also find delicious food in the Concourse Restaurant (get the walleye!) and nightcaps in the Elk Room The service is top-notch, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

WHERE TO PLAY

The lake is right at your doorstep, and there are plenty of water-based activities in the spring-fed Elkhart Lake Two of the resorts have bars on the beach, including the Osthoff’s tiki bar, if you want to stay dry and floaty. We fished for bass and walleye with Jay Brickner, who has been a guide on the lake for 26 years. Our group caught 16 fish, including 20and 28-inch walleye.

Road America is the primary destination for many travelers, and its popularity is increasing. A communityowned operation, the track has hosted thousands of races since its beginnings, including a NASCAR event in 2021. The track is used for filming, test cars, car club races, vintage car races and professional racing. The Formula One-style go-carts are incredibly fun and very safe.

For more gustatory play, Jaclyn Stuart, a certified sommelier with a stellar resume, moved to Elkhart Lake to marry a local boy, and she opened Vintage Elkhart Lake as an outlet for her love of wine, fine foods and spirits. The retail store has a small tasting area, and Stuart’s brilliant palate means excellent wines to sip while you shop. Finally, Siebkens Resort has a 4-seat, secret bar on its property that’s popular with the race car drivers, but finding it is half the fun, so enjoy.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

If you’re eating off the Osthoff property, the Paddock Club is Elkhart Lake’s premier destination. Chef-owner Lynn Chisholm oversees the kitchen, while her sister, co-owner Cheri Hau, takes care of front of house, including sommelier duties. The food at Paddock Club is as good as you’ll find in any major city, and Chisholm’s skill set includes baking and desserts. Her panna cotta is the best I’ve experienced. The menu is seasonal and focused, and on our trip, the baharat chicken was the star of the table. Next door to Paddock Club is Street Cafe, a very popular cafe and wine pub that is now a sister concept to the new Amasa Eatery, a Mexico City-style cantina with traditional Mexican cuisine made by a chef and pastry chef both from Mexico City. The preview meal was stunning, and it’s unbelievable to find this quality of Mexican food so far north.

A majestic property with a history and presence unique to Corpus Christi

n Corpus Christi’s famed Ocean Drive sits a landmark estate with a history as bold as its interiors. With unobstructed views of the bay, breathtaking grounds and four interior fireplaces, this home certainly leaves an impression. That was the intention of the first owner and builder of this grand property: Frank Crook, a cotton farmer and operator of a cotton compress, built the two-story brick Mediterranean-style house in 1930.

The Crook estate became a well-known property to the people of Corpus Christi. Throughout the years, the residence was host to many parties and social gatherings and

was even featured in several home tours. Frank Crook passed away in 1980 and the home, unfortunately, lost its spark. However, in April 1984, local investor Jack Stone purchased the home with the intention of restoring it to its original condition.

Stone was interviewed for a 1984 Corpus Christi CallerTimes article and was quoted, “We want to restore the house to its original condition. We will make a few minor changes all in keeping with the original design and materials.” Stone added central air conditioning and heat and renovated the surrounding gardens, which are one of the home’s key features. He even hired Crook’s original gardener, Manuel Medina, to take care of the grounds.

One of the gardens' most distinguished features is the original greenhouse by Lord & Burnham, which is the leading manufacturer of greenhouses in North America and was the builder of some of the United States’ most treasured public conservatories. Owning one of these original Lord & Burnham greenhouses is rare.

“There are only six in the state of Texas,” said the estate's current owner, Dee Braman. “Out of those six, apparently only two or three are privately owned.”

As detailed in an article by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in 1952, the greenhouse once held rare tropical plants and award-winning flowers. The article also states the Crooks were the first in Corpus Christi to grow hybrid amaryllis

extensively in their garden. This feature — along with the rare greenhouse, sunken garden, imported French urns and collected fountains and statues — was so admired in Corpus Christi that the house was featured on the Annual Home and Garden Pilgrimage in 1952.

The Crook family was also known to throw lavish soirees on the property. As documented in a Corpus Christi CallerTimes article from July 1938, many garden parties were held at the estate. Mrs. Crook enjoyed showing off her home and grounds with fêtes held in honor of guests from Austin to Philadelphia.

In addition to the rare greenhouse and unique plant life, the gardens are also said to feature over 250 magnolia trees.

“We couldn’t find a ping pong table that we liked, so we had a leftover dining table base, added glass for the top, bought a table net and painted it gold.”

“It has been said that one of every species of magnolia that grows in the state of Texas was carted in…and planted in this yard,” remarked Braman. Another unique and historical detail is the antique light posts from St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans that were given to the first owner by his friend. One of the posts even has a brass plaque that reads, “To Frank from Dick, March 1937.”

The oldest aspect of the property, however, is the iron fence that surrounds the estate, which is over 270 years old — it was built in New Orleans in 1750. As quoted in a local newspaper article from 1978, Crook said, “I bought that fence on the last day of July in 1926. It was 175 years old at that time. It was built by the Imden Iron Works in New Orleans. It was around an old New Orleans house that burned.” The writer of the article claimed the iron fence may be “the oldest item in Corpus Christi.” Some of this very fence also surrounds Lyndon B. Johnson’s grave at LBJ Ranch in Johnson City.

When Braman saw the estate was for sale, she was determined to bring it back to life. “This home belongs to the heart of Corpus Christi. There’s this sentimentality that people have towards this house,” she said. An admirer

of historic and classic dwellings, Braman fell in love with its Southern California architecture and stately gardens, and wanted to restore it to its original condition.

“It’s got such great bones,” Braman said. “We got the old blueprints. We never moved one wall…but we were able to bring [the house] up to 2020 living standards.” Without reworking the floor plan, she was able to redo all the plumbing and electrical wiring throughout the home. She also salvaged and restored the original pecan wood floors and kept the original redwood bookshelves in the library, which is now a media room. “We were able to make changes to where living is now comfortable,” Braman said.

She also completely remodeled the kitchen to be more functional and appropriate for a modern family. “Storage is so important to make it function. We made the butler’s pantry more functional and added a warming drawer and drink fridge. We turned the pantry into a design element by using wallpaper and added fridge and freezer drawers,” Braman said.

The remodel also included all the bathrooms in the home. Now, the primary bath features a steam shower, and

all of the bathrooms have marble tile and quartz countertops. The powder bath, however, was surprisingly the biggest challenge. “When it was coming together, we never could make the powder bath work just right. A week into staging the project, I decided we’d turn an old silverware drawer into a sink. That’s what makes it magical. We’d run into a snag…and something would come out of nowhere and make it work,” said Braman.

Aside from modernizing the home and making it more functional, Braman wanted to revive its glamorous roots. Once a prestigious and opulent host to social events, it needed a restoration to that same allure. Braman’s vision was elevated class, a well-traveled air and Hollywood glam. “We have this house that is planted in the South. It’s Spanish, ritzy and kind of Beverly Hills. Imagine in the ’30s and ’40s, they sat and drank and told stories of their travels. We took that Southern vibe with the horses, equestrian style and magnolias. We took those two worlds and meshed them together,” said Braman.

The home is filled with nods to old Hollywood, exotic travel and equestrian style. The walls of the breakfast room are covered in the iconic banana leaf wallpaper featured in the Beverly Hills Hotel, while the chrome dining chairs, upholstered in zebra hide, add an exotic touch. The living room features an eclectic mix of vintage rattan, modern brass and pops of cobalt blue and emerald green.

The dining room, adjacent to the living space, houses one of Braman’s most distinct and sentimental art pieces. “We took our horses’ harness illustrations and turned them into artwork,” she said. Another innovative design element is the ping pong table in the den. “We couldn’t find a ping pong table that we liked, so we had a leftover dining table base, added glass for the top, bought a table net and painted it gold,” Braman said.

Much like this table, many of the furniture items and art pieces throughout the house are repurposed to be something unique and special. “That’s what is so special about this home. Every piece of this property has a story,” remarked Braman. This estate certainly has a richness of character that cannot be replicated.

“This home makes you slow down. It has this peace…it reminds us every day to cherish something old.”

Pairing the interior design to complement the exterior architecture honors the energy that initially drew the homeowner to the home. If the architecture falls within a clear period, like Mid-Century Modern, it is appropriate to make selections within the styling of that period’s interiors. If the style of your home is not that clear-cut, consider the scale and proportion of the space relative to the size of furniture you are adding. A standard 8’ ceiling calls for smallerscale and clean lines whereas living spaces with higher ceilings can accommodate taller, heavierlooking pieces. Wallpaper is definitely having a comeback. We are seeing a variety of patterns and colors, including bold florals and geometrics. Follow the architecture of your home as you look. If you are concerned about still liking your choice in a year or so, lean more conservative in your search, and wallpaper the inside of a bookcase or a smaller space such as a powder bath. A beautiful grasscloth is a great option, and can be timeless and add texture and color to a space without tiring of it.

WHAT ARE A FEW SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE DECOR OR DESIGN ELEMENTS THAT CAN ELEVATE A ROOM?

Two of the most important and inexpensive things you can do to bring to life any space are paint and lighting. The color of the room should set the tone for how you’d like to feel when you walk into that room. The lighting will assist in setting the mood. If the room feels too drab, add some lamps. If the overhead lights are too bright and distracting, add lamps to soften the area and relax your eyes.

Create a background that is as maintenance-free as possible. You can create a “kid-friendly” section in the home that makes them feel special while honoring some boundaries from the more adult areas. Work into the design scheme a storage ottoman for toys that looks like and can be used for extra seating. Also, use performance fabrics and rugs that clean easily.

My intuition plays a huge part, but it all starts with allowing the architecture to help guide me in my design choices. Then I like to become extremely familiar with my clients' lifestyles — I pay really close attention to how they live in that space, how they envision living in the newly designed space and where their level of taste lies. Once I figure out all that, I’m able to come up with a concept that is beautifully balanced, in form and function.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE WHEN SOMEONE IS DRAWN TO A VARIETY OF INTERIOR STYLES OR IDEAS FOR A PARTICULAR SPACE?

I look at a home as a family, a group of persons constituting a single household and interacting with each other in their respective positions. This is how I like to look at designing individual spaces under one roof. Rooms within a home (or office) are like relatives. In most families, each member looks different, but they all have similar reoccurring attributes, each one complementing the next. This idea or form of repetition creates spaces that truly go together.

A TRADITIONAL FAMILY HOME WITH A FRESH, MODERN TWIST

When Ashlee Lee and her husband Justin were on the hunt for the perfect home there was one goal in mind: to find a family home that could grow with them. “I really wanted to be able to evolve the house over time. Something that I could work on for 10 to 15 years was ideal. It was special to me to give the house a second life,” Ashlee Lee recalled.

The Lees were ready for the challenge. “I had grown up in an environment where my parents had extensively redone a couple of houses,” Lee said. “I saw the house as a huge opportunity to make it what we wanted it to be, which was [a home with] open space and a big yard to have our kids play in, to host the kids’ birthday parties, to have friends over. That was one of the biggest attractions to the house.”

Lee knew this South Shores home was the perfect fit. “Structurally the house was great, and the layout was easy for me to work with. I felt confident that I could tackle the project,” she said. The family took on

the extensive remodel in 2017 with a second phase in 2021. Lee’s design goal was to create a home that is both classic and traditional, and fresh and modern.

“We both tend to gravitate toward traditional homes, which are always in style. It is a classic way to keep a neutral background and still be able to switch up textures, accessories and furniture. I tried to marry some things that were traditional and some things that made the house feel fun and new,” Lee said.

This mix of traditional and modern aesthetics has created a home that is colorful, eclectic and full of life. The bold navy walls in the formal living and dining room are a clean canvas for the eye-catching

emerald bamboo dining chairs, parquet dining table and burl wood credenza.

The jute rug grounding the sitting area is a timeless touch, while the stunning Jonathan Adler chandelier above the dining table is a modern twist on a classic mid-century piece. “My goal [with that chandelier] was that maybe in 30 years, they will know that it’s vintage Jonathan Adler. I wanted it to be something with staying power,” said Lee.

shaker cabinetry and touches of marble. The home also features a colorful and functional mudroom. With its Benjamin Moore Smoke cabinets and pastel pink hexagon floor tile, this utility room is anything but basic. “I made the laundry room a hub for the house. It’s a separate space where you can sit at the little desk and work or do laundry. Everything is there,” Lee said.

Lee’s design ethos was to choose items she loved and make them work together. “It is truly all things that I love, and I have to find a way to marry them together.” One of her most beloved elements is their art collection. “The artwork is probably

the least curated thing [in the home]. Most come from my father-in-law, who has left us pieces and helped us buy pieces,” she said. “[Collecting art] was truly his passion. He has instilled in us making artwork a fun thing that doesn’t have to be perfectly coordinated for it to be interesting and to tell a story.”

Lee could say the same for the design of the home in its entirety. Despite the furniture being an eclectic mix of design styles, the home still tells a story — one that is bold, colorful, fun and rooted in family.

Jasmine is one of the most storied and beloved flowers of the ancient world. The plant has delighted emperors and commoners alike since the first civilizations of Mesopotamia.

Its origins are rooted in Persia long before Sumer and the city of Ur. The earliest Sumerian emperors adorned their gardens with fragrant jasmine and traded the seeds into Asia. Jasmine has been the darling of the kings since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Kublai Khan’s Xanadu.

In Asia, jasmine came to symbolize beauty, grace, purity and sensuality. It is used commonly in religious ceremonies, weddings, state functions, and is the national flower of Pakistan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Jasmine is in the olive (Oleaceae) family. There are two basic types: royal or vining jasmine and Arabian or bush. Vining jasmine is the most common type in the Coastal Bend. The most popular varieties — usually the only kinds available in local nurseries — are star jasmine and Asian jasmine.

Star jasmine should be planted at the base of a trellis, fence or arbor. It grows high and wide with gorgeous white flowers and a powerful, heady aroma when in bloom. Asian jasmine is a ground cover that grows dense, glossy, green leaves but does not flower. You should plant Asian jasmine in the bare spaces in a flower bed or as a low border.

Arabian jasmine, the bush or shrub varieties, is perfect for pots. These potted plants make gorgeous and aromatic accents around the patio or house. They can be brought inside during winter freezes to last for years. Just make sure to keep potted plants outdoors in full sun or near windows if inside.

GROWING UP

Star jasmine (vining): Spacing: 36” on a trellis. Height: climbs high and wide (up to 10’). The flowers are white and fragrant. Asian jasmine (ground cover): Spacing, 12”. Height: 6” to 12”. The leaves are lush and green, though there are no flowers. Plant jasmine from transplant in April in an area with full sun and afternoon shade. It requires rich, well-drained soil. Add several inches of compost and a generous amount of pastured poultry manure when planting. Keep the soil moist until established.

PROFILING

Star jasmine grows quickly once established. Lay vines across the lower portion of a trellis to start; they will attach and climb on their own and will bloom from April through June. Prune after flowering is complete. The jasmine flower aroma is intoxicating and lovely in a flower bouquet. Asian jasmine takes longer to establish, then grows lush and thick. Both varieties will die in a hard freeze, but prune dead vines and the plants will usually regenerate from roots in the spring.

FUN FACTS

Jasmine can be mildly toxic. So, never let kids eat any part of them. Wear plastic gloves when pruning or cutting vines; the milky sap that oozes from the stems can cause skin irritation and rashes. Pruned jasmine vines, however are safe in compost piles. Most commercial jasmine teas are green tea with a jasmine-scented infusion, but not actual jasmine. For jasmine baths, use only the flowers to prevent skin irritation.

Dane returned to Corpus Christi in 2007 to work for the law firm of Welder Leshin LLP where he currently specializes in admiralty and maritime, administrative, and governmental law. He has represented the Port of Corpus Christi Authority as Assistant General Counsel since 2015.

CAULIFLOWER ALFREDO AND GRILLED BARBECUE TOFU FOR A SIMPLE, DELICIOUS VEGAN MEAL

Veganism, the practice of abstaining from animal meat or products, has maintained momentum in the food sphere. With new technology-backed meat, egg, fish and cheese alternatives hitting the market, herbivorous commodities have more real estate on grocery store shelves and in fast food menus.

People adopt a plant-based diet for a variety of reasons— among the most often cited are advocacy for animal rights or to lower their carbon footprint, but phytophagous habits also have several health perks: stabilized blood sugar, lower cholesterol, potential weight loss and getting more of certain vitamins and minerals (with the notable exceptions of Vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids).

For those going meatless on Mondays or lifelong vegans, these dishes are worth adding to the weekly rotation. Creamy alfredo sauce gets an overhaul with a surprise leading ingredient: When boiled and blitzed, cauliflower transforms into a luscious sauce. Top the generously coated spinach tagliatelle or wheat fettuccine with fried garlic bits to add a small crunch and some big flavor. Also highly recommended: stirring fresh arugula, sautéed mushrooms or sundried tomatoes into your prepared sauce before serving. Consider topping your alfredo with some fresh basil or flat-leaf parsley.

Tofu is another well-known vegan staple with a mild flavor profile. Grilling tofu adds a smoky char that perfectly complements a tempting (vegan-friendly) barbecue sauce. If you’re craving meatless chicken wings, try dredging the tofu in panko bread crumbs and frying it before adding the sauce. These tofu barbecue bites make great vegan appetizers or healthful dinner options when accompanied with steamed rice and grilled broccoli. The best part is the entire dish comes together in just over 30 minutes.

RECIPE

Grilled Barbecue Tofu

Makes 2 cups

PREP TIME: 35 minutes

COOK TIME: 5 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

1 (14-oz) package of extra firm tofu

1/4 cup soy sauce

1 tbsp avocado oil

1/2 cup vegan-friendly barbecue sauce

2 tbsp honey

1 tbsp sriracha

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

DIRECTIONS:

Drain the tofu and wrap it in paper towels or a clean dish towel. Place a cast iron or heavy pan on top of the covered tofu. Let dry at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Cut the tofu into six 1/2-inch thick slices. Combine soy sauce and avocado oil in a shallow bowl, and coat both sides of each slice of tofu. Grill tofu for 2-3 minutes on each side, until a nice char is achieved.

Combine the remaining ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Cut tofu into bite-sized pieces and toss in barbecue sauce. Serve with steamed rice and grilled broccoli.

Cauliflower Alfredo

Makes 6 servings

PREP TIME: 10 minutes

COOK TIME: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

5-6 cups (1 head) cauliflower, cut into florets

1 tbsp salt, plus 2 tsp salt

12 oz dried fettuccine, linguine or tagliatelle

2 tbsp olive oil

1 head garlic, minced

1 shallot (optional), chopped

1 cup dairy-free milk

1 tsp Dijon mustard

1 tsp finely ground black pepper

1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg

Nutritional yeast (optional)

Optional mix-ins: fresh spinach or arugula, fresh or sundried tomatoes

DIRECTIONS:

Place 6 cups of water in a large stock pot over high heat and season with 1 tbsp salt. Once water reaches a rolling boil, add cauliflower florets and cook for 8-10 minutes (until very tender). Transfer cooked cauliflower to a blender along with 1 cup of the cooking water. Add pasta to the boiling water and cook per the package directions.

Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Once oil is hot, add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Remove half of the garlic and transfer to the blender. Let the remaining garlic cook an additional 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden and crisp. Remove from heat and set aside. (If using shallots, saute them in remaining olive oil at this time before transferring to the blender).

Add dairy-free milk, 2 tsp salt, Dijon mustard, black pepper and nutmeg to the blender. Blend on high for 2-3 minutes, until smooth. Toss prepared pasta generously with sauce and top with fried garlic and nutritional yeast (if using). Also consider stirring sautéed mushrooms, baby greens or tomatoes into the prepared pasta before serving.

PRODUCE ART GALLERY INTRODUCES NEW COCKTAIL BAR COMPONENT

Combining local arts, culture and camaraderie around a cocktail is the mission of Produce Bar Co., and the reason local legends Carlos Villarreal and Johnny Garcia introduced craft beer and wine-based cocktails inside the Produce Art Gallery. Well-loved by the community, the Produce Bar Co. and the gallery in which it resides represent a collaboration between Villarreal and Garcia, who have found a way to create a living art gallery mixer with cocktails that complement the art.

“Art and supporting local art has always been what we've done our entire adult lives. We have a passion for it; we always want to [provide] local artists [with] a space where they can showcase their stuff in a gallery that’s accessible,” Garcia said. “Then, we decided to elevate the experience…it’s a cohesive idea: art and a drink menu that complements the overall vibe.”

So, what kind of cocktails come from behind that shiny new bar top? “We’re an art gallery, so we don’t want to lose that essence by pushing too far in one direction. We settled on beer and wine,” said Villarreal. “We’ve also essentially tried to take it as a challenge and as an opportunity to offer [drinks] other places don’t offer or wouldn't necessarily think to offer.”

From Apr. 1 to Jun. 1, Produce Bar Co. will be operating under spring hours on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., Friday from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Saturday from 3p.m. to 1 a.m.

Produce Bar Co. has rolled with spinoffs of the classics, like a margarita or old fashioned, by using smooth-finishing liquor-infused sakes that have the taste of a spirit, but not quite the bite. “I’m an old fashioned drinker,” Villarreal said about his own favorite on the Produce Bar Co. menu. The Fiery Fashioned is the gallery’s take on a smoked old fashioned using whiskey-infused sake. While Villarreal favors the cocktail concoctions, Garcia leans toward curating the beer selection and chatting over the lagers, IPAs and international selections they’re going to stock the cooler with.

Anchored by a righteous craft beer and wine by the glass selection, the cocktail menu is re-invented with each month’s art installation to further the immersive affair. The Produce Bar Co. team collaborates with exhibiting artists to curate a special cocktail menu at the start of the exhibition’s run. This everchanging cocktail menu and its parallels to the displayed art allow for a unique drink experience unlike anything else.

NATIONALLY TOURING EXHIBITION “COLLIDOSCOPE” MAKES ITS FIRST STOP IN CORPUS CHRISTI

Anationally touring Smithsonian exhibition featuring the works of de la Torre brothers Einar and Jamex is making its first stop in Corpus Christi this month. The exhibition, Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective, was organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of Riverside Art Museum.

The retrospective premiered at The Cheech in the summer of 2022 — with Sara Sells Morgan, Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) director, and Deborah Fullerton, curator of exhibitions, in attendance. It was then scheduled for a national tour, and the Art Museum team knew this exhibition needed to be displayed in the Coastal Bend along the way.

“When Melissa Richardson Banks contacted us to gauge our interest in the exhibition, we didn't hesitate for a second,” Morgan said. “AMST has a longstanding relationship with Cheech Marin and Melissa's firm, CauseConnect. The exhibitions we have collaborated on in the past have always resonated with our visitors. Collidoscope will be no different. The de la Torre work poignantly explores the collision of culture, medium and boundaries, and does so with boundless substance and humor combined with exemplary craftsmanship.”

The exhibition features 40 mixed-media works by internationally acclaimed artists, including blown-glass sculptures, installation art and lenticulars with imagery that changes as the viewer moves from one side to another.

Join AMST, the de la Torre brothers and other special guests on Smithsonian Day: Apr. 23, 1-3 p.m. Local artists will be highlighted and the ¡Descubra! family program will be presented to museum attendees.

Einar and Jamex have navigated life on both sides of the border for most of their lives. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, and now living in San Diego and Baja, California, the pair pulls from this in forming their perspective of the Latinx experience and how it relates to American culture.

“The complexities of the immigrant experience and contradicting bicultural identities, as well as our current life and practice on both sides of the border, really propel our narrative and aesthetics,” Einar said. Through materials such as glass, resin, lenticular prints and what Einar refers to as “curated objects” (he’s not a fan of the term “found objects”), the duo creates vibrant and multifaceted artworks speaking to the complex cultural experience.

In addition to the exhibition’s local run from Apr. 20 through Sept. 30, the museum acquired a piece from the brothers for its permanent

collection with funds from the Windgate Foundation, titled “Mitosis.”

“The museum has a growing collection that includes craft,” Fullerton explained. “The work titled ‘Mitosis’ fit not only in the area of contemporary craft, but very fittingly it depicts art of this time; and in the case of these collaborating brothers, reflects their bicultural identities.”

Einar further elaborated on the fitting nature of AMST choosing this piece. “Mitosis is the splitting of the genes, and you’ll see along the perimeter of the piece that it looks like little DNA segments kind of splitting. I think that speaks to the borderland separation and

how we split our time and life traversing the border.”

Coastal Bend residents will have the chance to view the exhibition alongside Einar and Jamex de la Torre at the opening on Apr. 20 and special gallery tours with the artists on Apr. 22. This unique experience will offer local art lovers the chance to hear from the brothers on their creative process and the show itself, culminating in a beautiful, shared experience of culture and art in our community.

Having always seen herself eventually moving back home, Chaney said she knew she wanted to take the experience and knowledge gained over the years and pour it into a shop here in the Coastal Bend. The duo moved to Corpus about three years ago, and said the community

has been supportive of their ideas and ventures since.

"I worked in the fashion world, and I loved it, but it was really wasteful. That was really hard for me to be a part of, especially being a surfer,” Chaney said. Selling vintage to high-end boutiques was an innovative way to try and reframe the way people thought about vintage, especially those who were unfamiliar with it. This remains her motivation in opening Needles & Fins: to present a sustainable, vintage shopping experience in a fresh, new way.

people and that his experience in the music industry has aided in opening the new shop. Having written and recorded music and toured the U.S. and Australia, Fraustro’s culmination of past passion projects now aids in being a business owner.

Chaney and Fraustro have curated a selection of products reflective of their shared interests and experience in the music, fashion and surf industries. With a focus on Texas-based designers and women-led teams, the apparel options range from vintage 1950s to Y2k fashion from small, independent designers. In addition to its array of clothing and accessories, the shop’s selection of vinyl – ranging from classic rock and '80s pop to punk and independent Texas record labels – offers something for everyone.

The Impact of Central Wharf

A CENTRAL ASPECT OF CORPUS CHRISTI’S EARLY DEVELOPMENT

In line with the trade that brought founder Henry Kinney to Corpus Christi, many of its early residents moved to town to build shipping businesses of their own. In the early decades of the city, piers and wharves were built out into Corpus Christi Bay all along Water Street.

The Central Wharf was built by John Willet in 1853. If you stand in front of the ESC Region 2 building on Water Street today and look toward the Bay, you’re standing at the base of what was Central Wharf, which was built between Lomax (formerly William) and Sartain (formerly Laguna) streets. The land between you and the bay today was added as part of the construction of the seawall in the 20th century.

This wharf was the town’s main shipping pier for much of its existence, until the 1913 construction of the

Municipal Wharf. After the Civil War, mail was delivered to the Postmaster via mail boat three times a week. Huge loads of wool, hides, skins, tallows, horns and even cattle were left on steamers from the wharf regularly.

Visible in the distance on the bluff, under the “C” of Central on the image above, is Corpus Christi’s oldest surviving home, the Centennial (Britton-Evans) House. It was built by Forbes Britton, who was a partner in a shipping firm then owned by George Evans, an importexport merchant. Before the Port opened in 1926, the Central Wharf and others on Water Street were integral to Corpus Christi’s shipping business and were big business for Corpus Christi’s economy.
