BENTLEY CLAIMS ANOTHER ATLANTIC HOCKEY ROOKIE TITLE: DYLAN PITERA Forward Dylan Pitera (Culver, Indiana) became the second Bentley University hockey player in as many weeks to claim Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced on Tuesday Forward Dylan Pitera (Culver, Indiana) became the second Bentley University hockey player in as many weeks to claim Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced on Tuesday. Pitera follows teammate Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario), who earned the award last week from Atlantic Hockey. The left winger had one goal and one assist this past weekend in the series against Sacred Heart. In Saturday’s come from behind 3-2 overtime win, he scored Bentley’s first goal of the night, at 2:35 of the 2nd period, to get the rally started. He also had the primary assist on Luke Santerno’s goal in Friday’s game, which came just 1:16 into the 1st period. Pitera has played in all seven games so far this season, and has two goals and two assists and is a +3.

Goalie Change Sparks Overtime Stunner Senior goalie Jake Bryniarski notches first career win The Bentley Arena, November 3In the second game of a two game weekend with Atlantic Hockey rival Sacred Heart, Bentley battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Pioneers with an electric goal from senior Drew Callin in overtime. A wave of unexpected and complete shock rose over everybody in the Bentley Arena during this game.

goaltender who has appeared in just four games throughout his career down 2-0. Bryniarski was tested instantly making an incredible diving save with his glove to cover a sliding puck on the goal line. At that very moment it seemed as though the entire arena had gained life and the Falcon’s bench was going nuts. Leading the charge of support was none other than Aidan Pelino.

What sparked the comeback for the Falcons? It was senior goaltender, Jake Bryniarski. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Coach Soderquist and his staff decided to replace starting net minder Aidan Pelino for the second period. “Aidan certainly wasn’t playing bad, but we just needed to get a spark and see if we could get a change in momentum” said Coach Soderquist following the game. The goalie change was the first hint that the unexpected would shine on November 3, and it certainly did right down to the wire.

As saves began to pile up for Bryniarski, so did his confidence and the entire arena, Falcon’s players and coaches included, were rallying behind Jake.

Coming in cold, for any player is difficult, let alone a senior

The game as a whole was fast paced and the Falcons were constantly on

the attack trying to even the score. In the second period freshman forward Dylan Pitera lasered a wrist shot over the blocker of Sacred Heart’s goalkeeper to put Bentley’s first score up on the board. From here the Falcons didn’t look back. After continued pressure, the Falcons were able to even the score midway through the third period as Jake Kaupilla hammered home a one timer in the high slot. With just about a minute left in the third period, the Falcons found themselves on the penalty kill and after multiple opportunities for the Pioneers, it was Jake Bryniarski standing strong between the pipes, sending the Falcons into overtime. As the overtime period began, it almost seemed as if it were just Bentley’s time to win the game. Falcon fans were on their feet and the Falcons, fueled by Bryniarski, had played to good of a game to let this one go.

Bryniarski’s play completely changed the game for the Falcons. With each save the team played harder and Falcon fans cheered louder. Everybody in the rink seemed to pick up on a crazy feeling of excitement and energy as Bryniarski made save after save. In two periods, it was a 22 save shutout for the senior net minder and his first career victory.

It was an Incredible moment for all Falcon fans after an amazing back and forth game. When goaltenders are put in as difficult position as Bryniarski was, coming in cold down 2-0, often times teams don’t win those games. The Falcons battled back and won an absolute thriller.

With 2:39 to go in the period, the Falcons took to the power play and seized their chance. Off a beautiful pass from sophomore Luke Santerno, Drew Callin capped off what was an incredible game for him with a Mario Lemieux type finish to win the game for the Falcons.

The unexpected continues to surprise in the Bentley Arena. We had controversial calls, a boatload of goals, and now an overtime victory sparked by a goalie change. Who knows what to expect as the Falcons roll into a two game set with Army in the Bentley Arena.

In a typical game Callin would be your first star, however Jake

Between the Pipes with Bentley Goalies Aidan Pelino, Jake Bryniarski, and Fraser Kirk Playing goalie in the sport of hockey is a special position to be apart of. Goalies possess the ability to completely alter the complexion of any game with just one save. Teams rally behind them and goalies can become the heart of a team. When goalies can achieve a status on and off the ice as a guy who teammates want to support and play for, good things can happen.

A common theme between the trio is unselfishness and a team first mentality. This showed through when senior goaltender Jake Bryniarski got to secure his first collegiate win on November 3, after entering the game in the second period. When talking about the game Bryniarski stresses how fun it was to achieve it with the team.

This applies to Falcons net minders Aidan Pelino, Jake Bryniarski, and Fraser Kirk. In just the early goings of the season the trio has already formed a strong bond while competing with one another everyday. Freshman goaltender Fraser Kirk feels he’s been “lucky” to have the support and welcoming from Pelino and Bryniarski between the pipes. “I’ve told these guys that I’ve been really lucky with how they’ve welcomed me onto the team. That’s goalies and players as well. As Aidan was saying the whole team is pretty tight knit.” said Kirk.

“It was a lot of fun. What made it the most fun was being able to share it with everybody. Nothing is ever just an individual effort and that was definitely more of a team effort than anything else.” said Bryniarski. Everybody in the rink could notice the support from Pelino and Kirk as Bryniarski continued through

the game. For many goaltenders, animosity and frustration can set in when another goaltender replaces you and does well. For Pelino, this wasn’t the case. “As soon as I saw [Bryniarski] out there having a blast, you just begin to look at the bigger picture and enjoy it for him. It was a joy all around.” said Pelino. While competing against each other day in and day out, the trio of skilled goaltenders has formed a “goalies versus everyone else” mentality as a product of battle drills in practice where the goalies match up against the forwards. “We’ve always kind of thought we should go out there and have fun. Instead of it being goalies versus goalies it’s sort of goalies versus everybody else.” said Bryniarski. A point of emphasis for the Falcons goaltenders is to be there for each other, on and off the ice. Around campus and at events you may even catch Pelino, Kirk, and Bryniarski having “goalie chats”. Pelino said it best when describing the relationship between net minders saying, “For us we have a lot of fun together. And no matter who’s in, or

what’s going on at practice or in games, we’re always on top of each other, enjoying it as a unit. I know I can talk to these two about anything whether it be hockey related or in life.” Pelino, Bryniarski, and Kirk have formed a strong and tight bond as the season has progressed. One that mirrors the dynamic of the entire Falcon team. Look for the goalies to continue to compete as the Falcons fly into a two game home set with Army. Author: Matty O’Brien

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: ASHLEY SCHOLTEN Year: Junior, graduating December 2019 Major: Information Design and Corporate Communication Minor: Marketing Interests: I hope to pursue a career in brand management and content development. Personally, I’m really passionate about music and faith. Organizations: Bentley Field Hockey Team; Off the Clock A Cappella; Bentley Cru and Athletes in Action Favorite Food: I will eat chocolate of any kind! Favorite Activity: I love spending time with my family, especially at the beach. Favorite Music: Bastille and Pink Floyd are two of my favorites, but overall anything with great lyrics appeals to me. I’m also a sucker for acoustic guitar. Favorite TV Show: The Office is hilarious. Favorite Movie: I know you didn’t ask this, but Good Will Hunting is the best movie EVER – I made a poster just to hang one of the quotes from it because I couldn’t find one online. How does it feel to be resident anthem singer of the new arena? More than anything, I feel over-hyped! People are always so kind in expressing their enjoyment when I sing, and it really means so much that people go out of their way to be so complimentary to me. I just feel so blessed to be able to contribute – I know big crowds scare a lot of people, but I get energized by them and am glad I can take on the opportunity.

How did it feel to open the arena this year and the grand opening? Grand opening was crazy! There was so much excitement, and I felt honored to be part of such an awesome moment for Bentley. This year’s opening was just as nerve-wracking, but I at least had done this before and didn’t feel totally overwhelmed.

What are you thinking when you walk out to center ice and be under the spotlight? My two thoughts walking out are “what is my starting note?” and “don’t forget the words.” And when I turn around to walk back, I’m thinking “oh no, I think I messed up the words.” Every. Time. You’ve performed at other university events as well, how do they compare? Other games are less nerve-wracking because I’m not in front of the crowd and am usually hiding up in the press box. However, the arena has an amazing sound system, and hearing the acoustics helps build my confidence as I’m singing. Do you think you’d look into singing the anthem at larger arenas when you graduate? I’ve always had this “bucket list” idea of trying to sing at a Patriots or Bruins game – I got to sing with Off the Clock at Fenway once already! I definitely plan on continuing to sing in church praise bands since that’s where I got my musical start.

Do you ever think about doing something to pump up the crowd?

Is there something you’d like to see from the students when you perform or just after you’ve completed?

I’m usually pretty nervous and just focus on keeping my voice under control. If it’s a good day for my voice, I’ll try to really belt out the higher notes to bring out the dynamics of the song, but I haven’t adopted my own version of Rene Rancourt’s fist pump yet!

The students are the backbone of making these games awesome – as an athlete, I know firsthand how much energy you get when people are cheering you on. I am less concerned about how students react to me, but they should definitely bring out their Bentley pride loud and proud for our team!

TEAM NOTES •

The Black Knights make their second visit to Bentley Arena this weekend after they played the inaugural series here last season.

Army is coming off a split with Sacred Heart in a home and home series last weekend. Each team won on the others’ home-ice. SHU won in West Point last Friday, 4-2, but Army responded with a 4-1 victory the following day on the road.

The leading scorers for Army so far are a pair of defensemen, Dalton MacAfee and Alex Wilkinson. Both have 11 points, and both have done it on 2 goals and 9 assists. The leading goal scorer is junior Zach Evancho with 5. In goal, sophomore Trevin Kozlowski has seen a majority of the minutes, starting 8 out of 11 games.

HEAD COACH: RYAN SODERQUIST Ryan Soderquist enters his 17th season behind the bench at his alma mater Bentley University for the 2018-19 season. A two-time Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012, Soderquist is the winningest coach in program history with 213 career victories and counting entering this season. In 2013-14, Bentley finished in 2nd place in the regular season, its highest ever finish in Atlantic Hockey, and won 19 games overall to equal the program Division I record for wins, set in 200809. The team also reeled off a program Division I record nine-game unbeaten streak. The following season in 2014-15 they finished T-3rd in Atlantic Hockey and won 17 games overall. He became the winningest coach in program history with a 3-2 victory over Connecticut on Nov. 19, 2010, which was the 102nd of his career, moving him past Jim McAdam and into 1st place on the program’s all-time career wins list. Soderquist begins the 2016-17 season with 187 career wins. Not just successful on the ice, Soderquist’s teams excel in the classroom and are active in the community. Bentley is regularly among the most well-represented schools on the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team. The program posted a four-year Academic Progress Rate score of 997 (out of 1000) for the 2007-11 academic years, which measures the retention and eligibility of scholarship players.

A 2000 graduate of Bentley and the school’s all-time leader in goals and points, Soderquist was named the head hockey coach at his alma mater on March 7, 2002, becoming the youngest head coach in Division I hockey. He had spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant under McAdam. In his first season at the helm, he was named the 2002-03 MAAC Hockey League Coach of the Year after leading Bentley to more wins (15) than they had in the previous three seasons combined. Soderquist finished his playing career at Bentley with 84 goals and 89 assists for 173 points, 24 points higher than Bentley’s former standard-bearer, John Maguire ’84. The 84 goals are also a school record and the 89 assists are tied for 4th on the all-time list. As a sophomore in 1997-98, he set the program’s single-season record for points with 59 and goals with 33. Both records still stand. The recipient of numerous honors during his career, Soderquist was Bentley’s captain for two seasons. After his record breaking sophomore year, he was named an SID’s first team Division II AllAmerica. As a senior, he led the conference in points per game and assists, was second in total points and was named first team All-MAAC.

ASSISTANT COACH: BEN MURPHY The 2018-19 season will be Ben Murphy’s 10th as an assistant coach at Bentley University. A fouryear player at the University of Maine who played in two NCAA Championship games, Murphy’s recruiting efforts and eye for talent has helped lead to Bentley’s sustained success and set the program up for a bright future. Murphy came to Bentley after spending the 2008-09 season as a graduate assistant coach at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont. While on the Spartans’ coaching staff, Murphy helped Castleton State to a 15-9-2 record overall and an 11-6-2 record in the ECAC Division III East conference, which was good for second place and the best regular season finish in school history. Prior to his time at Castleton State, Murphy was an assistant coach with the Wichita Thunder of the professional Central Hockey League for the 2006-07 season. Murphy played for the Thunder during the 2005-06 season, appearing in 55 games. Murphy played collegiately at Maine, helping the Black Bears to the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years, and to the NCAA Championship game in 2002 and 2004. As a junior in 2004, he scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime of the Hockey East Championship game against the University of Massachusetts. Murphy played in 141 games over four years and registered 15 goals and 33 assists for 48 points. He was awarded the Howard Griffin Unsung Hero Award as a junior. He graduated from Maine in 2005 with bachelor’s degree in political science.

ASSISTANT COACH: JON COLEMAN Jon Coleman begins his first season on the Bentley hockey coaching staff for the 2018-19 season. An experienced coach and player, Coleman was previously an assistant coach at Babson beginning in 2015. His previous stop was as the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the Canton Bulldogs in the MPHL. As a player, Coleman was a 2nd round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1993 NHL Draft. That preceded a standout career at Boston University, which saw him win the 1995 National Championship with the Terriers. Individually, he was named an All-American in both 1996 and 1997, was named first team All-Hockey East in those seasons as well, while helping the Terriers to the Frozen Four both seasons. Price: $55 (includes game ticket and parking pass) $35 as an upgrade for most ticket holders ($42 with parking) Space is also available for group events on game nights. For more information about the cube and to purchase tickets, please call 781-891-2289 or email Arena@Bentley.Edu

“The Cube experience is great. So far I’ve brought a guest to the first two games and they were both very impressed. It’s comfortable, private and the food and service are excellent. It also provides plenty of privacy from the noise and traffic of the arena, with the flexibility of going out to your seat in the arena to be a part of the action anytime you want. Being able to watch the world series alongside the Bentley hockey game on that giant high-def t.v. was also a huge convenience/perk. I have no hesitation in bringing a client or business associate to the arena and Cube, especially with the parking privileges. You can talk business, enjoy some great hockey and make a great impression all at the same time.” -John Lampiris ’87

“I have really enjoyed the “premium ticket” Cube experience thus far. It provides a great opportunity to arrive early at the arena and enjoy food and drinks both before and during the game. Many people are staying in Waltham after work to grab dinner before they attend hockey games, why not spend less than you would at a restaurant ($35 all you can eat and $5 for wine is not a deal that you will find anywhere else) and enjoy the company of colleagues and alumni?! I will be hard pressed to not purchase premium tickets for the remaining games that I plan to attend this season. “ -Executive Director, Bentley University
