HARVARD CRIMSON ARE COMING TO TOWN The Bentley Arena, December 4 – After an exciting weekend for the Bentley Falcons, with back to back games against the Mercyhurst Lakers, the Bentley community is in store for another great game on campus.

In recent years the Falcons have toppled teams like Boston University, Northeastern, Umass Lowell, and most recently Boston College. Now the Falcons have the opportunity to beat every Beanpot team as Harvard enters the Bentley arena for the first time. The Beanpot is a major hockey tournament that has been held every year since 1952 consisting of Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, and Northeastern. The Crimson will be coming in with six NHL Draft picks, one being freshman Jack Drury who was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in this year’s second round. Harvard is currently sitting with a 4-4-2

record with notable wins over Cornell and Arizona state. This game will be a major test for the Falcons as they are looking to get back on track. This past weekend, the Falcons battled in two great games against the Lakers. Saturday night’s tilt featured a wild finish with senior captain Tanner Jago dinging the crossbar on a last second shot from the point. The game was fast moving with both teams on the attack all the way through. The final minutes of the second and third period specifically featured a slew of chances from the Falcons leading to an exciting finish to both periods. The energy and effort was there all weekend for Bentley, and after not ending with the outcome they wanted, expect the Falcons to come out flying against the Crimson. The first half of the season has been a thrilling one especially in the Bentley Arena. Falcon Fans have been exposed to numerous one goal games and highlight plays. This half of the season on campus will close against Harvard and the atmosphere is going to be great. What better way to cap off an exciting first half than with a win over the Crimson in front of the Bentley community. The Falcons broke the internet on November 23 after defeating Boston College, catching the attention of College Hockey News, The New England Hockey Journal, and the entire hockey community. This next game against Harvard would be yet another great win for the program and the Atlantic Hockey Conference. Look for the Falcons to to fly over the Crimson in front of a packed and energetic environment in the Bentley Arena. Author: Matty O’Brien

BEATING BOSTON’S BIG BOYS

Hockey culture runs deep in the city of Boston. The city is to a small-town, community feel, and it became the perfect breeding ground for a game celebrating the same values. The Boston Bruins are an Original Six franchise around which the region congregates, but the neighborhoods ensure hockey is ingrained at local levels. The Beanpot is one of the best examples of how that works in Massachusetts. It’s a throwback to an older time before national television contracts, and its four programs can all claim a similar, unique heritage unlike any other school in college hockey. Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern are all power

brokers in the region, and all excelled on the national stage. If the four schools are considered power brokers, BC, BU and Northeastern can now all claim one other common fact: all have lost to Bentley, and all have lost in their home buildings. The five-time national champion Eagles became the Falcons’ latest victim last Friday following a 4-2 decision at Conte Forum. Bentley is a combined 5-5-2 against the three Hockey East schools and defeated each team individually in the past five seasons. In 2013-2014, Bentley played its first-ever game at Agganis Arena against a Boston University team featuring eight NHL draft picks on its roster.

Derek Bacon scored in the first period, and the Falcons opened up a 3-0 lead in the second with goals by Jared Rickord and Brett Switzer. The team cruised from there, winning 4-1 on a snowy night on Comm Ave. Two years later, Bentley entered its season with a home-andhome against Northeastern that season produced the Huskies’ first-ever visit to John A. Ryan Arena. After a 3-2 win at historic Matthews Arena in the first game, Bentley scored twice in the first period before a sell-out crowd at home, pacing goalie Jayson Argue’s 40-save night in a 4-1 victory. It became Bentley’s third and fourth victory over a Huskies team that eventually won the Hockey East Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament. It led to this year’s win in the first-ever meeting between Bentley and Boston College. Unlike the aforementioned meetings, the game remained scoreless through the first period before the Falcons jumped all over the Eagles.

They outshot the home team, 13-4, as both Tanner Jago and Will Garin scored on the power play. Matt Lombardozzi added an early third-period goal, which enabled the visitors to hold off a late-game surge in a 4-2 victory. It became Bentley’s ninth win over Hockey East teams in the last 12 years. Bentley now heads into its matchup with Harvard in position to clinch its own de facto Beanpot. The Falcons have four previous meetings with the Crimson dating back to a game in October, 2013 when more than a dozen buses of Bentley students turned the Bright-Landry Hockey Center into a home game atmosphere. Harvard, however, holds a 4-0 advantage in a series that will make its Bentley Arena debut on Tuesday. Author: Dan Rubin

HEAD COACH: RYAN SODERQUIST Ryan Soderquist enters his 17th season behind the bench at his alma mater Bentley University for the 2018-19 season. A two-time Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012, Soderquist is the winningest coach in program history with 213 career victories and counting entering this season. In 2013-14, Bentley finished in 2nd place in the regular season, its highest ever finish in Atlantic Hockey, and won 19 games overall to equal the program Division I record for wins, set in 200809. The team also reeled off a program Division I record nine-game unbeaten streak. The following season in 2014-15 they finished T-3rd in Atlantic Hockey and won 17 games overall. He became the winningest coach in program history with a 3-2 victory over Connecticut on Nov. 19, 2010, which was the 102nd of his career, moving him past Jim McAdam and into 1st place on the program’s all-time career wins list. Soderquist begins the 2016-17 season with 187 career wins. Not just successful on the ice, Soderquist’s teams excel in the classroom and are active in the community. Bentley is regularly among the most well-represented schools on the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team. The program posted a four-year Academic Progress Rate score of 997 (out of 1000) for the 2007-11 academic years, which measures the retention and eligibility of scholarship players.

A 2000 graduate of Bentley and the school’s all-time leader in goals and points, Soderquist was named the head hockey coach at his alma mater on March 7, 2002, becoming the youngest head coach in Division I hockey. He had spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant under McAdam. In his first season at the helm, he was named the 2002-03 MAAC Hockey League Coach of the Year after leading Bentley to more wins (15) than they had in the previous three seasons combined. Soderquist finished his playing career at Bentley with 84 goals and 89 assists for 173 points, 24 points higher than Bentley’s former standard-bearer, John Maguire ’84. The 84 goals are also a school record and the 89 assists are tied for 4th on the all-time list. As a sophomore in 1997-98, he set the program’s single-season record for points with 59 and goals with 33. Both records still stand. The recipient of numerous honors during his career, Soderquist was Bentley’s captain for two seasons. After his record breaking sophomore year, he was named an SID’s first team Division II AllAmerica. As a senior, he led the conference in points per game and assists, was second in total points and was named first team All-MAAC.

ASSISTANT COACH: BEN MURPHY The 2018-19 season will be Ben Murphy’s 10th as an assistant coach at Bentley University. A fouryear player at the University of Maine who played in two NCAA Championship games, Murphy’s recruiting efforts and eye for talent has helped lead to Bentley’s sustained success and set the program up for a bright future. Murphy came to Bentley after spending the 2008-09 season as a graduate assistant coach at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont. While on the Spartans’ coaching staff, Murphy helped Castleton State to a 15-9-2 record overall and an 11-6-2 record in the ECAC Division III East conference, which was good for second place and the best regular season finish in school history. Prior to his time at Castleton State, Murphy was an assistant coach with the Wichita Thunder of the professional Central Hockey League for the 2006-07 season. Murphy played for the Thunder during the 2005-06 season, appearing in 55 games. Murphy played collegiately at Maine, helping the Black Bears to the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years, and to the NCAA Championship game in 2002 and 2004. As a junior in 2004, he scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime of the Hockey East Championship game against the University of Massachusetts. Murphy played in 141 games over four years and registered 15 goals and 33 assists for 48 points. He was awarded the Howard Griffin Unsung Hero Award as a junior. He graduated from Maine in 2005 with bachelor’s degree in political science.

ASSISTANT COACH: JON COLEMAN Jon Coleman begins his first season on the Bentley hockey coaching staff for the 2018-19 season. An experienced coach and player, Coleman was previously an assistant coach at Babson beginning in 2015. His previous stop was as the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the Canton Bulldogs in the MPHL. As a player, Coleman was a 2nd round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1993 NHL Draft. That preceded a standout career at Boston University, which saw him win the 1995 National Championship with the Terriers. Individually, he was named an All-American in both 1996 and 1997, was named first team All-Hockey East in those seasons as well, while helping the Terriers to the Frozen Four both seasons. After graduating from BU’s School of Management in 1997, he went on to play in the AHL for several seasons, followed by playing in several leagues around Europe.

“The Cube experience is great. So far I’ve brought a guest to the first two games and they were both very impressed. It’s comfortable, private and the food and service are excellent. It also provides plenty of privacy from the noise and traffic of the arena, with the flexibility of going out to your seat in the arena to be a part of the action anytime you want. Being able to watch the world series alongside the Bentley hockey game on that giant high-def t.v. was also a huge convenience/perk. I have no hesitation in bringing a client or business associate to the arena and Cube, especially with the parking privileges. You can talk business, enjoy some great hockey and make a great impression all at the same time.” -John Lampiris ’87

“I have really enjoyed the “premium ticket” Cube experience thus far. It provides a great opportunity to arrive early at the arena and enjoy food and drinks both before and during the game. Many people are staying in Waltham after work to grab dinner before they attend hockey games, why not spend less than you would at a restaurant ($35 all you can eat and $5 for wine is not a deal that you will find anywhere else) and enjoy the company of colleagues and alumni?! I will be hard pressed to not purchase premium tickets for the remaining games that I plan to attend this season. “ -Executive Director, Bentley University
