Marisa peer:
DON’T WAIT FOR SUCCESS TO COME TO YOU, YOU MUST GO TO IT From financial success to attracting our perfect partner, Marisa teaches that nothing is impossible if we have faith that we are ‘enough’
We all need a cheerleader sometimes; a few inspiring words to help motivate us and overcome our doubts. But instead of looking to others for this support, Marisa Peer believes we have to become our own cheerleaders. Marisa has been coaching the world’s top performers for more than 25 years, and her clientele lists several multi-millionaires who learned how to pass through their fears, all thanks to her. Taking to the stage at this year’s The Best You Expo, Marisa shared her powerful techniques which show that nothing is impossible to achieve if we have faith in ourselves. - and that we can develop this faith on a daily basis. Here Marisa is in her own words: “I’ll tell you a little bit about my story. I started off being a child psychologist but I wasn’t in love with that. I think I was just too young. I ended up going to work for Jane Fonda, and I noticed that every third girl in her workout studio was bulimic or anorexic or exercise, and I became fascinated as to why. Using my psychology

background, I began to see that they all felt that they never felt ‘enough’. Soon afterwards I became a therapist, and I realised that one of the biggest issues with all my clients was this feeling that they weren’t enough. People came to me with wide-ranging issues - such as eating disorders, alcohol addiction, an out of control shopping habit or marital problems - but they all had the same problem. They would binge eat, or drink alcohol or buy more stuff to try and feel like they were enough. Because when you don’t think you’re enough you need more. But if cakes could really make you feel enough then you wouldn’t constantly need more, if alcohol could make you feel enough then you wouldn’t constantly need more. Their presenting issue was masking the real problem. So I began this journey working out what it is that makes people not feel enough. When you are not enough you forever need more, you can never get enough. But when you know you’re enough you don’t need more. When you know you’re enough you give the

whole world permission to recognise that you’re enough. This is not arrogance and it is not insecurity, it is right in the middle. I know I’m enough, and when you know that about yourself you can never, ever be rejected. People can say horrible things but it just goes over your head you don’t let it in. People who don’t feel they’re enough often have a drive to be rich and famous so that they think they’re enough. But it doesn’t work if they haven’t dealt with why they feel like that. They always think they need more success and more praise because they feel there is someone younger, taller coming up right behind them. We can look at all the amazing people we’ve lost recently in tragic circumstances; for example Philip Seymour Hoffman, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse. So many people that make you think ‘wow they had everything’. But take Amy; I spoke to her dad many times and she was treated for bulimia, alcoholism, anorexia and drug addiction. But those were not her real problem. She never, ever believed she was enough. You only have to listen to her song lyrics - I told you I was troubled, you know I’m no good - it broke my heart that she could have been helped, but instead she got the wrong help. You can put ‘I’m enough’ into your life. If you want to understand how your mind works and how your mind can become your best friend, your most loyal ally, and your cheerleader, then you need the Rules of the Mind. This is 33 years of therapy condensed! But here is my favourite; “Every thought you think and every word you say is a blueprint that your mind and body say ‘I’ve got to make that work’. So, when you walk along thinking ‘no-one is going to like me’, it becomes true. But if your every thought and word is ‘I’m enough. I always have been, I always will be’ then your mind believes it and you become bullet proof to rejection. The strongest force in every human in the world is that we have to act in a way that matches how we think and how we want to feel about ourselves. Babies think they’re wonderful. We are all born knowing we are enough. And all you have to do is reactivate, re-manifest and regenerate what is in you, it has been in you all your life and you’ve just buried it under negative beliefs that aren’t even true. If you say ‘I’m enough, I’ve lovable, I’m significant and I matter’. If you say that every day it defeats the logic that says ‘I’m not sure about myself or my clothes from Primark or my weight’. When you tell your mind that you’re enough it defeats anything that would tell you otherwise. Here is one of my favourite Rules of the
20 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE
Mind because it is so easy; Your mind does what it thinks you want it to do. And guess what it bases that on? What you tell it. If you think “I’d die if another relationship goes wrong, if another person tells me that that’s it I’m finished” - then you set yourself up to fail. When you say things like that you’re telling your mind you don’t want love. It is too painful. The amount of people who say to me “I like someone but I never talk to them” or “I have a great idea at work but I never present it”, or even “I’ve written a book, but it is has been in the drawer for 15 years”. They all hold back because they focus on the fact that they could be rejected. Nobody can reject you unless you agree with every single word they say. And you have the choice not too. Your mind wants to move you from pain to pleasure. It does what it thinks you want and it bases it on what you tell it. And all you have to do to have an amazing life is tell your mind better stuff. Try “I can speak to anyone”, or “I have a great idea” or “I’m completely lovable”. You mind likes what is familiar to it - so make great stuff familiar. Make self-belief and self-praise familiar. Wake up every day and say “I matter. I’m significant. I’m lovable. I am enough”. If you say it over and over again it becomes so familiar your mind doesn’t stop to think. Your mind responds to the pictures in your head and the words you say to yourself. All you have to do is change the pictures and change the words and it will change you entire life. Not just sometimes, all the time. You make your beliefs. Your beliefs make you. Make your beliefs amazing. So let’s practice what you’re going to do every day for the rest of your life. I want you to say out loud “I am enough”.

LIGHTING THE PATH TO SUCCESS Entrepreneur and founder of global media company London Real on how to grow as a person, a brand, and a business
Every now and then, someone enters your life who shows genuine interest in helping you succeed. It might be a teacher at school, a mentor at work, or someone you find in the world of selfdevelopment. They exchange ideas and devote energy into helping others strive to become better at each day. Having a vested interest in the success of others is not only gratifying, it’s rewarding and better yet - it’s the the first sign of a true leader. Brian Rose is exactly that leader. Back in 2011, Brian was considered ‘successful’. He had a good job, earned decent money, and a nice place to live - but he had enough of the corporate world, the money grabbing, the status chasing, and the repetitive treadmill. So he took six months months, started a YouTube channel and video talk show called London Real to show the world how they could be the best version of themselves. Since then, London Real has produced over 500 episodes that have been watched over 250,000,000 times. Guests have included Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, The 4-Hour Workweek author Tim Ferriss, 6 time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates. London Real has an audience of over 1,000,000 subscribers and over 3,000 students have graduated from the London Real Academy. Brian took to the stage at The Best You Expo 2019 to share his passion for helping everyone fulfil their potential. He believes “it’s very hard to fail completely if you aim high enough.” You don’t need to change the world tomorrow - things take time, and consistency - but you need a strategy. Here are Brian’s 10 most important habits to growing as a person, a brand, and a business.

1. Have a Strategy
Brian’s great talent is not art or technology - it’s strategy. He puts the right people in the right place, becoming the Richard Branson of the podcast world. He has built a strong team around him, and treats every guest as a mentor, getting some of the best business and life advice.
2. Be Adaptive
Brian’s vision has always been the same but he isn’t afraid to change direction. You, too, should be ready to tweak your product, service, or whole startup to adapt to your audience. Be humble enough to take advice from the experts.
3. Take Risk
Everything is a risk - including not taking a risk. Brian admits that the number one risk that changed the podcast, and the whole of London Real as a business, was letting Dan Pena into his life. Brian shifted from spiritual and laid back to demanding the best of himself in every aspect of his life. Every time Brian has to change his product or service, he risks upsetting his audience, but it’s a necessary part of growing a business.
4. Take MASSIVE action
If there’s one thing that has truly made London Real what it is, it’s Brian’s dedication to his work. With a full team, that dedication has become the backbone of the entire brand, encouraging everyone to put in long hours to build something world-changing.
5. Do Good and Get Help
one of these “scary” tasks each day you’ll feel much more rewarded at the end of the week, month and year.
7. Nurture True Fans
By creating a message and brand he can live his life by, Brian become the face of his brand. By being genuine and helping people, the fans he built are strong and loyal. The London Real culture is so strong that everyone wants to help out, everyone wants to be a part of the community.
8. Balance Perfectionism
Brian has found the balance between trying to make everything perfect and making sure the work gets done. It’s very easy for perfectionism to become procrastination the key is to toe the line with perfectionism, but always gets the job done.
9. Make Time For The Right People Brian makes as much time as a busy person can, but he doesn’t spend time with people who aren’t serious. It’s simple: if you’re creating something great and helping others, Brian will make the time for you.
10. Build a Love Brand
Brian created a community of the best people around and his events are unique and authentic. In being true to his intentions, Brian is building a brand customers love, not like. For more information visit www.LondonReal.tv
Brian believes that if you help others, you will be helped - but you have to act first. Often the help you give turns becomes incredibly valuable, helping you break through barriers you wouldn’t be able to surmount yourself.

ords of wisdom, age-old adages, myths and folktales - whatever we call them, the stories we tell one another and pass down to the next generation connect us across race, religion, and national boundaries. Although these stories have diverse themes, no story resonates so universally as the tale of how to succeed in life. But what does this mean? For most of us, it is the application of the experience of others to our own lives. Samuel Smiles, a Scottish author, wrote the first book about success in 1859. Appropriately titled Self Help, it laid the framework for the writings of Orison Swett Marden, and later Napoleon Hill, by teaching success through the parables of experience. Napoleon, who is arguably the founder of the modern-day success movement, was a master storyteller who compiled the first comprehensive philosophy of success. He did this after discovering that the most remarkable self-made men of his time—like Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford— all did the same thing to succeed, although they each used different means. For the past 150 years, success philosophers and thinkers have proved time and again that one trait in particular appears to be a key to all great achievement—persistence. It was persistence that allowed George Goethals to build the Panama Canal when so many had failed. It was persistence that drove Edison to success in devising the lightbulb. It was persistence that pushed Abraham Lincoln through a broken heart, two business failures, and eight losses for election to public office to become president of the United States. Napoleon Hill wrote “One reason why most men seldom accumulate fortunes until they have passed well beyond the 40-years-old goal post of life is that they must undergo failures and overcome sufficient obstacles to develop in them sufficient knowledge to accumulate wealth.” International speaker and bestselling author Dr Greg Reid knows that it is those who persist and learn from failure who carve their place in history. In his talk at The Best You Expo 2019 he explored the theme of his book Stickability: The Power of Perseverance, reinforcing the proven success principles that were compiled by Napoleon Hill. Dr Reid provides thought-provoking insight from the lives of incredible people, sharing stories demonstrate that a definite goal strengthened by persistence will always lead to success. They show that “negatives” are just the tasks that need to be done to avoid a setback and that setbacks should be viewed as opportunities to reroute a path to success. These are the people who have helped shape our world; the leaders who began a pathway to success with nothing more than an idea to follow. Their goals may not be your goals, and their setbacks and failures are not yours either. However, their stories are parables of success that will inspire you to find your own road to personal achievement. Dr Reid explores “The Three Causes of Failure”; for example, the get-rich-quick narratives which promise that if you follow some simple steps you will watch your bank account grow with little effort. And thus, happiness is achieved. The leaps from get-rich-quick to success to happiness are implied, for the most part. But Dr Reid argues they are nestled in between the lines of stories that have little relevance to your
26 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE
power—which is the power to define what it is you want. Instead, we should accept that success is seldom easy and that we must accept that we will have to face challenges and obstacles in order to achieve goals. Every individual who has attained personal achievement can tell you that the question is not will there be tough times, the question is when will they arrive? It’s through these moments of uncertainty that our character is revealed. For Dr Reid, we can agree that we all want happiness and prosperity in our lives, and also know that happiness takes discipline. To achieve happiness we must first have the discipline to determine carefully what this means for us. Once we have a clearly defined goal, we must maintain discipline to find the opportunities within the challenges we’ll face along the way. This is when we make strides in selfdevelopment. How we handle temporary setbacks will ultimately determine our outcome. Whether it’s a weed in the garden, a dream, desire—or even fear—what we feed and focus attention on will eventually grow the most. The same applies to opportunity. What we focus on is what we see. When one seeks the good, good things happen. When one seeks opportunity, opportunities occur. When we are faced with challenges, our reactions expose our true character to others specifically, and to the impartial spectator generally. This is why it is crucial to know clearly who we are and who we want to be. Seizing opportunities within challenges exposes a character of strength, resolve, patience and, yes, stickability. Dr Reid also looks at success from a different perspective and turns the principle upside down. Rather than focus on and illustrate another surefire blueprint for abundance, as mentioned earlier, he places our attention on its counterpart: failure, and its often forgotten component, missed opportunity. It has been suggested that personal achievement eventually comes from focusing on our major definite purpose (some call it passion) and then from the courage and stickability to see that vision through. The path to personal and professional success is not a one-way street. Most people encounter setbacks and obstacles that threaten to derail them from their chosen route. The most successful people, however, adhere to their principles and goals, capitalising on hidden opportunities, even in the face of what many would consider unconquerable obstacles. These people have stickability and you can learn it too. Stickability: The Power of Perseverance is out now For more information visit www.gregreid.com

Dr Ortega is a first-generation Cuban American gay man, author and regular media commentator on all things dating, sex, relationships and psychology. In #AreYouHereYet: How To STFU and Show Up For Yourself his signature raw, humorous, and compelling style examines the perceived epidemic of being single in our universal quest for love. When a person is committed to doing all the work to improve themselves by being “The One” (and thereby improve their love life), what happens when nothing seems to happen afterwards? Through witty, thoughtprovoking writing, sassy #OMG Moments, case studies, and “Tea Time with Tony” (end-of-chapter exercises for the reader), Dr Ortega helps to explore the personal blocks and self-limiting beliefs that keep us stuck. It’s a second chance at not only improving, but falling in love with, ourselves.

BECOMING
the best me TV star and Calum Best on the transformative power of writing things down and the success of his The BestMe journal Back in 2013, Calum Best wrote down his three goals: Write a book, execute a fragrance line, and release and feature in a film. Calum kept these goals written in his wallet and reviewed them daily, which he found helps to keep him focused. After years of struggling with addiction and the pace of life in the public eye - which often saw him hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons - it turned out that the simple act of writing a list of aims helped to set Calum on the path to taking charge of his life and unleashing his entrepreneurial power. Calum created a daily journal so he could simply write down his goals and then take small steps towards achieving them. He called it The BestMe Journal, and designed it to bridge the gap between a daily planner, a notebook, a gratitude journal and a goal planner. Calum understood that without doing the “goal maths” it would be impossible to achieve what he wanted to; his aims needed to be at the forefront of his day, every day. Soon, The BestMe journal gave Calum a dedicated focus. The formula he created meant he remained thankful for where he was, gave back to those who helped him get there, appreciated small victories and stayed positive about the future through planning. These were all kept in mind with the help of his daily BestMe journalling.
34 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE
Calum says: “It’s so simple but most people fall off the goal getting wagon soon after they start. The Best Me journal will keep you on.“
In the six years since Calum created The BestMe Journal, he has used it to help better himself and move away from a life of imbalance - years and years of what he calls “just going with the flow”. Today, aged 38, Calum lives a life of purpose, which in turn has helped reveal to him the purpose of life. And he puts his new ‘go getter attitude’ and results-driven work ethic down to his consistent and habitual routines, which are all made simple with the BestMe journal.
“I’ve always studied entrepreneurs, and, for obvious reasons, have been fascinated by those who have turned themselves around from a place of near giving up, to a place of crushing it,” says Calum. “Every person who has gone from a place of being rock bottom, to absolutely killing it, all have one thing in common - repetitive, consistent and disciplined action every day with a positive frame of mind. “It’s so simple but most people fall off the goal getting wagon soon after they start. I created The Best Me journal to help keep you on. The Best Me makes it easy to start your journey in journaling, which can help ease anxiety and depression through meditation and mindfulness. I want everyone to be the best you that you can be, every day.”

MEET THE PEOPLE GETTING
Lucozade Sport’s Made to Move campaign is celebrating those helping us put our best feet forward
moving more by 2020, and this autumn they will reveal their ‘Movers List’, celebrating inspiring people who encourage people to live more active lives.
In recent years international research on Sedentary Behaviour has increased dramatically, and there is growing evidence that a multitude of serious health risks may be connected to “prolonged” and “excessive” sitting. Some studies warn that sedentary lifestyles are likely to be causing as many deaths as smoking. British people sit for an average 8.9 hours each day. Research shows that sitting for more than four hours each day leads to enzymes responsible for burning harmful blood fats shutting down, reduced calorie burning and disrupted blood sugar levels, which can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, weight gain and back pain, as well as mental health issues. In a bid to combat this growing epidemic, people and brands across the UK are setting up innovative and exciting ways to get people exercising. Lucozade Sport’s ‘Made to Move’ campaign pledges to get one million people
These include athlete Dan Edwardes who has helped bring parkour to the masses, and Lauren Gregory, founder of Run Like a Girl, a women’s only running group that she set up in Leamington. Run Like a Girl now has branches in Warwick, Coventry and Stratford Upon Avon. In 2016 Lauren was awarded ‘Amateur Sportswoman of the Year, Coventry & Warwickshire’, and Run Like a Girl is now a 1200-strong running community. According to the NHS, 58% of women and 65% of men are overweight or obese, an increase from 15% in 1993 to 26% in 2014. This is also reflected in the fact that in 2015, only 36% of adults said they played sport at least once a week and 57% did not play any sport in the 28 days prior to being surveyed. It doesn’t come as a surprise therefore, that more people, brands and governing bodies are coming together to help to reverse this trend. Encouraging people to get moving - and continue to move - is a step towards progressing the UK’s overall physical, mental and economic health. Lucozade Sport’s Movers List will be released this autumn. For more information visit www.lucozadesport.com/madetomove/

We all know that bottled water is terrible for the environment, but tap can taste less-thangreat. Try filtering it instead using the BRITA Marella jug which reduces levels of chlorine, heavy metals and limescale. It even has a helpful ‘memo’ that reminds you to change the filter to ensure you always have the freshest filtered water. www.brita.co.uk

If you struggle falling asleep, make sure to switch off your phone and iPad an hour before you plan to go to bed and have a warm bath with soothing lavender oil. Invest in Philips’ Sleep and Wake-Up Light which has a sunset simulation to prepare your

9. Give your eyes a rest:
Being so busy all the time means we’re often left making poor choices when it comes lunchtime - usually meaning whatever sandwich is closest to the office. Make healthier choices by meal-prepping ahead of time. Prep several lunches at once by hard boiling eggs, making a big batch of brown rice and cooking vegetables or chicken healthily using minimal oil by using the Philips Air Fryer ((www.philips.co.uk))
8. Make time meditate:
Schedule in some time to meditate - even if it’s just 10 minutes on the bus. Taking a bit of time to sit quietly and focus on your breath
Staring at a backlit device, such as a smartphone or laptop, all day is straining on your eyes. The 20/20/20 rule reduces this. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break and let your eyes wander over something six meters (20 feet) in the distance.
10. Go booze free:
If you know you’re going out for an inevitably boozy Thursday, Friday or Saturday, say no to a glass of wine at your chilled Monday night dinner. Try to avoid alcohol a couple of nights during your week, and then enjoy your Pinot come the weekend.

ARE YOU ON THE BRINK OF BURNOUT? Super busy, overwhelmed and tired all the time? Put down your to-do list and read this
44 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE
Do you ever feel like your brain is like a computer with too many tabs open? From checking your email as soon as you wake up, going shopping for last-minute birthday presents on your lunch break, and keeping up with countless Whatsapp group chats, there never seem to be enough hours in the day. It’s a familiar story – you’re tired, but wired, and, just like an over-loaded internet browser, it puts you at risk of a total meltdown. “Our modern lives mean we’re micro-dosing on stress from the minute our alarm shakes us out of sleep,” says Dr Mark Winwood, a psychologist and director of psychological services at AXA PPP healthcare. “We’re not very good at giving ourselves time out from these constant stresses. Over time, this can lead to us feeling completely overwhelmed – and this can lead to burnout.” Burnout is not just a buzzword, and it doesn’t mean you need a bit of a lie-in. Burnout is the result of chronic stress and over-work, described by the World Health Organisation as “a state of vital exhaustion”. As well as physical and mental exhaustion, it causes prolonged low mood, anxiety, feelings of detachment from day-to-day life. And experts believe it’s on the rise – a report by the Mental Health Foundation last year suggested that at least half a million people in the UK are affected by work-related stress 1 and 74 per cent of us have at some point been so stressed we felt unable to cope 2 . “If you’re truly burnt-out you simply wouldn’t able to get out of bed,” says Dr Winwood. “So what we really need to be alerting people to are the changes they could recognise in themselves before they get to that point. There are often subtle signs that, really, someone’s got too much going on.” The signs to watch out for include someone displaying symptoms of stress such as irritability, being hard on themselves, not making time for friends and family, and always imagining the worst-case scenario, or catastrophising. Other tell-tale signs are craving salty, stodgy food and not prioritising time for themselves. But thankfully there are preventative measures you can take. “If you’re overwhelmed, the key is to talk about it,”
says Dr Winwood. “Try approaching a trusted friend. Sometimes this can be enough to improve how you feel – just talking about why you’re stressed and how you’re managing it automatically helps you to approach it in a different way.” If you repeatedly take time off work recently because you feel overwhlemed, it’s time to talk to your GP about getting some help, says Dr Winwood. “It may be that a bit of a life over- haul is in order.” It’s important we don’t brush it off as ‘just’ stress, he adds. “If we’re chronically overwhelmed by stress, then it can lead to anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. “Make sure you do something every day to protect your mental wellbeing. It doesn’t have to take long – just small changes that give you a chance to step off the hamster wheel, such as having lunch away from your desk or making time for an actual conversation rather than messaging.” Dr Winwood adds that while a lot of stresses come from outside pressures that we can’t change (such as deadlines or difficult relationships with bosses and family) a lot of pressure can come from our own expectations – but this is a kind of stress we really can change. “It might mean saying no a bit more, or lowering your own standards a little – not everything has to be done perfectly,” he says. According to Dr Winwood, the aim isn’t to avoid stress altogether, says Dr Winwood. “A certain amount of pressure and is stress is actually helpful to us – it can make us perform better and be more productive than when there’s zero pressure. Our bodies are designed to deal with a little stress, just not all the time.” It’s about monitoring when we feel overloaded. “Be alert to times when you convince yourself you haven’t got time to keep up your good habits,” advises Dr Winwood. “If you notice yourself deciding that you haven’t got time to get to the gym or to see your best friend, have a think about what’s changed. Opportunities for downtime are really important, so rather than asking have I got time to go and meet a mate, ask can you really afford not to?”
