Creating a Better World
Personally Speaking
viuh ckr March, winter is holding back and spring is pulling forward. Something holds and something pulls inside us too. Similarly, we must also hold back the vices in us and pull forward our virtues and head towards a world of new normal. This reminds me of a few lines from ‘March: An Ode’ by Algernon C Swinburne which says “March, master of winds, bright minstrel and marshal of storms that enkindle the season they smile.”

Since we have entered the world of new normal we must encourage new and different ideas to restart our energies and to end the stagnation caused in our lives due to the pandemic which brought everything to a standstill, exactly the same time last year. To instil fresh energy in the movement, the NHQ will be organising the State Growth Coordinator training from 23rd to 25th March, 2021.

and Guides New Delhi on 14th March, 2021 where Prof. Shri Santanu Mazumdar and Shri Sudhir Shrivastava were the guest lecturers for sessions and the event was attended by 220 participants. The lifesaver vaccines such as the COVAXIN and COVISHIELD developed and manufactured in India itself proved a boon for all of us as it gave a ray of hope to do away with such a dangerous virus the world had never thought of ever before. However, the worst a situation may be but our Scout champions have never failed to give their best to the society and prove themselves as good citizens of our country. Therefore, the Scouts, Guides, Rovers, Rangers and Unit Leaders helped senior citizens and health workers at various vaccination booths in various parts of the country. The COVID is again spreading in various countries of the World including India. In the interest of all it is very important for each one of us to continue to follow the preventive guidelines issued by Govt. of India to check the spread of the deadly virus. Stay safe!

From Editor's Desk
lEiknd dh dye ls It is a matter of great pride to all the members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides that the strategy and efforts of BSG towards retaining Membership Growth is appreciated and shared by WOSM with other National Scout Organisation at World Level. There is no doubt, this has the result of untiring efforts and hard work of the Local, District and State Associations. The WOSM has invited the Bharat Scouts and Guides to share Membership Growth Strategy of the organisation with other National Scout Organisation of the world. The Covid Vaccination has started throughout the country. Scouts, Guides, Rovers, Rangers and Unit Leaders are helping the citizens and health workers at vaccination centres in various parts of the country and also creating awareness about vaccination in the community. I request all the members to assist the local administration in the vaccination programme. Even we have to continue our work for the protection from covid-19 as the no. of cases are increasing again. Its our duty to motivate people for social distancing and use of mask for protection.

TRAINER’S CORNER Contd.........from Previous Issue
Essential Characteristics of Scouting Essential Characteristics of Scouting: 2. Learning By Doing Education throughout life is based on four pillars: 1. Learning to know; 2. Learning to do; 3. Learning to live together and 4. Learning to be. As Scouting is an educational movement, it is supported by these four pillars. Learning by Doing is one of the seven elements of Scout Method. The seven elements are: © © © © © © ©
Law and Promise Learning by Doing Team system or The Patrol system Symbolic Frame-work Personal Progression Nature and Adult Support
In the earlier issue, we have discussed the Law and Promise. Now, let us see the second element `Learning By Doing`. Learning by doing is the idea that we learn more when we actually `do` the activity. It means learner will involve and perform the activity. Learning by doing is one of the theories of education expounded by American Philosopher John Dewey. He calls this philosophy of `Learning by Doing` as `Instrumentalism` This process involves acquisition of knowledge, skills or attitudes through direct first-hand experience. Boys and girls gain them in an active way as a result of first-hand experience which is opposed to theoretical instruction. This is called `Learning by Doing`. This is scouting`s practical approach to education. It is a way of helping young people to develop in all dimensions of the personality, namely, physical, intellectual, spiritual and social aspects, through experience in the form of activities.

An activity of whatever kind, does not automatically constitute a scout activity. It becomes a Scout activity when the Scout Method is applied to it. Activities in scouting and guiding are based on the young people`s interests and needs so that they are enjoyable and attractive to them. Young people enjoy scouting when they are personally involved and if they are given freedom to do. That is where scouting activities differ from class room education. The first practical experience may not be upto the expectation but by repeatedly doing the activity with the guidance of peers or the unit leader, they reach the perfection. In this method, the mind will focus attention on the task on hand without diversion. This process is `Learning By Doing`. Here unit leader or the scoutmaster need not be in a hurry to push the youth to reach the perfection. Some may grasp the technique fast and may reach the expectation early and some may take extra time to grasp the technique. Benefits of Learning by Doing: © It is a fun. Education is more about experiences than reading. Scouting is educational; Scouting is fun and Scouting is an out-door activity. © It activates all five senses. Performing various activities generates experiences. These experiences are multi-sensory. When the learner receives multi-sensory stimuli, it generates more retention of the event. © It fosters problem-solving attitude. Every activity becomes fun with challenges. Students learn how to solve a particular problem with limited resources like time, teammates, or materials. This attitude is essential to lead a successful life. © It enhances creative thinking. New ideas will generate while doing. © It promotes group learning. Normally young people have a tendency to form `gangs` of friends mostly peers. In groups they learn faster than through face-to-face with the adult leader. Here comes the Team system or The Patrol System. © It engages the young ones in a useful work and relieves them from monotony. © It develops self-confidence as they learn not to do mistakes and get benefit from them and remember them So Scouting activities support the process of Learning by Doing. Most of our activities starting from B.P.Six to the Campfire involve this process and the learning process continues till the learner reaches perfection. It is a fact that `Good Trainers believe in more practical and less theory - D. R. K. Sarma, LT (C), South Central Railway
