Now comes the season of monsoons in many parts of the country to keep us cool and ecofriendly. On June 5, World Environment Day reminds us about the `Ecosystem Restoration` which is the theme of this year. For too long, we have been exploiting and destroying our planet`s ecosystems. Half of our wetlands were destroyed and the deforestation amounted to global warming. It is time to prevent, halt and reverse this damage. This is what `Ecosystem Restoration` means. Our scouts and Guides all over the country have been doing their excellent service by way of plastic free zones, tree plantation in public places and cleaning of water sources. Let us make plans for mass tree plantation and their sustained growth.

WEBINAR ON COVID-19 VACCINATION MYTH & FACTS Community disruptions or a pandemic such as COVID-19 can have deep and long-lasting impacts. Since last year we all have been fighting against COVID, and have lost many close friends or family. This year has come with a hope in the form of vaccine, but a lot of myths and rumors are also spreading at a rapid pace. Even after knowing very well that vaccine is the only weapon against COVID many individuals are afraid to get vaccinated as there are many hearsays. Keeping in mind need of the hour, the National Youth Committee of The Bharat Scouts and Guides decided to organize a webinar on “Covid-19 Vaccination: Myths and Facts”.The webinar designed for every age group took place on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 1700 hours onwards. The core motive of the event was to provide clear and action based guidance for safe operations: through the prevention, early detection and control of COVID-19 in the society. Having information and facts about COVID-19 vaccine will help diminish our fears and anxieties around the disease and support our ability to cope with secondary impacts in our lives. No doubt it was one of the grand events that BSG India had in recent times, the star of the event was the guest of honor, Dr. BhagwatKisanraoKarad(member of RajyaSabha/ MSin general surgery/ F.C.M.CH. in pediatric surgery) along with the young and dynamic speaker Dr. Shyamli Kulkarni, PT (member of NYC, BSG/ MPT- community physiotherapist; consultant physiotherapist). The program started with scout/guide prayer and lightning of the lamp conducted byMiss Rakshita, member of NYC.Then an introductory video prepared by NYC members on COVID-19 vaccine was presented. Ms. Ayantika Kundu, Vice chairperson NYC addressed the guests and viewers with welcome speech. Now, Sh. P.G.R. Shindia, Secretary General/ President in Council, BSG National Council and State Chief Commissioner of BSG Karnataka gave the opening remarks with his treasure words and invited the worthy chief guest Dr. BhagwatKisanraoKarad for his blessings. The honorable chief guest enlightened the minds

of the viewers with precise and updated knowledge about corona virus and its vaccinations. The event proceeded with the words of wisdom from Mr. M.A. Khalid, Additional Chief National Commissioner of BSG. Following this, everyone got to hear from the guest speaker of the day Dr. Shyamli Kulkarni. She talked right from the beginning of COVID-19, to how it is spreading with its various mutants and also talked about vaccines and its need in today`s time. She discussed about all the myths going around about the vaccines like its side effects and how it affects girls/women in their menstrual cycles. She asked everyone not to believe in such myths and to always check the facts before believing in any random social media forwards. At the end of session enthusiastic participants asked Questions related to corona virus, vaccine, black fungus etc. Worthy to mention that the energy level remained high till the very last question and every doubt was very precisely cleared by Dr. Shyamli. There were almost 500 viewers on Zoom cloud meetings and 250+ viewers on YouTube. After the completion of this session a digital brochure on “COVID-19 vaccination: Myths and Facts” was launched by Mr. Jitesh Seth, NHQ, BSG.This brochure created by National Youth Committee covers facts and myths about COVID vaccination and other relevant information along with many helpline numbers dedicated to COVID services. After the successful launch of digital brochure, Shri Raj Kumar Kaushik, Director of The Bharat Scouts and Guides made his cheerful appearance to congratulate all the members of The National Youth Committee for organizing this fruitful event. Finally, Mr. AnkurPaswan member of NYC, acknowledged each and every person very beautifully with his vote of thanks. The event wouldn't been a grand success without the support of National Headquarters, who trusted in the youth of The Bharat Scouts & Guides and theNational Youth Committee. The event was indeed another milestone that NYC has achieved.

TRAINER’S CORNER ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SCOUTING: PATROL SYSTEM A Patrol consists of 6 to 8 boys. As it is to be a unit for purposes of work, games, discipline, camp and good turns, it is essential that a capable Scout should be appointed to the position of leadership. ` Capable`does not mean `clever`. It is meant that he should be able to lead his patrol. As trainers, we are aware that qualities of leadership are partly natural and partly acquired. If a boy is to be appointed as a Patrol Leader, his age should not be the criteria. Young boys follow an older one even if he is a stupid. Old boys do not follow a younger one, even if he is clever. So, the Scoutmaster should bear in mind the abilities of a Scout while appointing him as a Patrol Leader. The Second is a boy selected by the Patrol Leader be his assistant and to take command of Patrol when he himself is away. It is essential to the successful organization of the Patrol that the Leader and the Second should be on terms of intimate co-operation. It is for this reason a scout master who chooses the Patrol Seconds without consulting the Patrol Leaders is making an initial mistake. The Chief is in favour of leaving the selection of Second practically and entirely in the hands of the Patrol Leader. Here are some practical hints to trainers to implement the Patrol System on Courses at any level: v Model Troop Meeting with local Scouts. v Visit to local units . (pre-planned) v Conducting Court of Honour.(COH meets in two capacities- One in its executive capacity every

week and the other in its judicial capacity for 3 to 4 times in a year. COH deals with arrangements for the coming week, Patrol competitions, camps, Games, Badge testing, Technical instructions, InterPatrol visiting, Troop subscriptions, announcements if any, by the Scoutmaster to pass on to the Patrols and many other things. In its judicial capacity, it may deal with the disciplinary issues. v The Patrol Spirit (preparation of patrol flag , preparation of Patrol Log Book, Patrol call, Patrol song, Patrol yell, using Patrol name) v Conducting Patrol-in-Council. v Patrol Competitions( COH may decide competitions such as games, signalling, First-Aid, Knotting, Fire -lighting, Relay-racing etc)

v The Patrol at Play v Patrol Good Turns. v Inter-Patrol visits v Patrol Library consisting of two copies of Scouting for Boys and Pravesh to Rashtrapathi tests etc.

Pioneering: Knot-tying. Modern First Aid, Signalling etc. v Badge examinations v Patrol Cooking As seen above, the patrol system is the only method in scouting that keeps the training of boys on the right lines. Every Scoutmaster should entrust the leadership to boys under their guidance. Reference: The Patrol System and Letters to a Patrol Leader by Capt. Roland Erasmus Philipps

GLOBAL YOUTH SUMMIT 2021 YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DECISION MAKING The Global Youth Summit is a unique virtual event designed by young people and for young people. Over three-days, young people, leaders, policy makers and change makers gathered at one place to discuss the challenges facing young people across the world. Scouts and Adult leaders from all over INDIA could watch the live broadcast on social media. It was led by the Big 6 Youth Organizations, including World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, in partnership with the World Health Organization and United Nations Foundation, representing more than 250 million young people around the world. In the session, YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN DECISION MAKING, The Bharat Scouts and Guides had unique opportunity to participate as a Facilitator at the Global Youth Summit on 25th April, 2021. Miss Ayantika Kundu, Vice-Chairperson of NYC had an interesting Question Answer session seeking her views of Youths in a decision making platform. Here’s a sneekpeek into the discussion of Miss. Ayantika and Mrs. Darshana. 1. Te l l a l i tt l e a b o u t yourself, your role and briefly your journey to achieving this role. 2. Being the Co-Chair of the National Youth Committee, why do you feel it is necessary for youths to be present in decision making platforms? 3. What have the young people and your organization gained from your leadership? 4. What do you think could be improved at the National Youth Committee to enable young people’s voices to be heard and acted upon? 5. What is still your “wow” moment in your journey so far? The entire session was moderated by Miss Adele Lync, from WAGGGS where other facilitators like Motunrayo Akinsete, Chinelo Ochu, Pascaline Iyodusenga, Trinita Bambe from Rwanda and Nigeria were present. They also shared their opinions on youth participation in decision making, capacity building, telling the importance on how youths can be trained and mobilized. The overall response was quite appreciable and the audience actively took part in the conversation.

K V Deepak Kumar, Adv. Cub Master of Tamil Nadu writes thus: The Global Youth Summit is an exemplary virtual event for the young people around the world of the big 6 youth organizations, from 23rd April 2021 to 25th April 2021 especially for young people, leaders, policymakers, global brands and changemakers to come together to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted young people in the areas of education, health and well-being, work and employment, and inclusion and inequality. I was privileged and honoured to represent our NSO as a delegate in this summit. This Global Youth Summit programme featured three main plenary sessions and over 70 interactive breakout sessions across time zones. In addition to inspiring keynote speakers and hands-on learning and professional development opportunities for participants, the Global Youth Summit will also launch a call for young people to apply for funding to support local and innovative COVID-19 response and recovery solutions. In the Breakout Sessions, there were 50+ expert Speakers, whose inspiration, thoughts, and suggestions enabled and engagedus to work on different aspects for consideration. They have focused on big 6 youth organizations such as World Organization of Scout Movement (WOSM), World Association of girl guides and girl scouts (WAGGGS), World YMCA, World YWCA, IFRC and the Duke of Edinburgh’s international award. As our founder Lord Baden Powell quoted –“In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed”, this event though is not full of scouting initiatives or organized by scouts but the way this summit went was totally in accordance with this quote and totally satisfied this quote. I have experienced wonderful moments during the summit, as I have witnessed many young people were doing marvellous actions and all the sessions were informative and knowledgeable. As most of the speakers were youngsters, it prompted me that our Bharat scouts and Guides also provides ample number of opportunities to the young people in organizing and decision-making platforms. It was a good arena to share my thoughts about our esteemed organization in a global forum. We had plenary sessions for all three days with many breakout sessions which were organized effectively. Some of the topics such as Social action – good for you, good for others; climate action session, budget for youth session and special people’s sports such as Paralympics were thought-provoking and interesting. Some of my suggestions and feedback from this summit for our organization are :

23

THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES

Creating a Better World

(these are my personal reflections from the summit) 1. Making sure we work for climate action in more ways, I’m firm that we are already saving mother earth at our levels and also working collaboratively. 2. We need to include such topics and activities in our upcoming events and let youth work more efficiently in this regard. 3. We need to ensure that specially-abled children to be given more priority in our organization as we have extension scouting (as per A.P.R.O – II*III). 4. We have to make sure that youth members of our organization are managed financially by providing opportunities to conduct sessions/ awareness on the topic Youth budgeting. 5. Making sure our youth get expertise in soft skills. 6. We need to involve youth in decision making processes and involvement towards decision-making training. ************* Supreeth Balaji from Karnataka state reports that the Global Youth Summit was a unique virtual event designed with young people, for young people. Over the past three days i.e. from 23rd to 25th April 2021, the Summit convened young people from all over the world. I was overwhelmed when I got to know that I will be one of the delegates representing the Bharat Scouts and Guides for the forum with Rover K V DEEPAK from the Tamil Nadu State. As a true Scout, I was determined to utilize the fullest of the forum by learning and gaining knowledge from the breakout sessions. Even if the time zones did not coincide, I was excited about the sessions and was determined, that I sat overnight and attended every session. My threeday experience in the forum was really exciting and informative. During the Forum, I had some opportunities to exchange thoughts and ideas with young people from across the world. Each and everyone had different views and opinions on some present problems, some solutions could be reflected in my community, where I can implement with other Young People. The virtual Summit included 3 plenary sessions with high-profile keynote speakers and 70+ interactive breakout sessions involving a range of Young People’s organization partners across the globe. In the Breakout Sessions, there were 50+ expert speakers, who interacted and enabled the young people to think on different aspects. This ground-breaking mobilization empowered me to respond to challenges in our communities and to recognize them for their efforts. The partners of the summit inspired many young people including me to take action on the current problems and to serve the community.

24

THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES

Creating a Better World

I experienced that many other Young People are given new opportunities and higher positions in the organization for a better youth point of view (as per other Young People). As the BSG is giving us opportunities in the organization, I was happy to share with everyone in the Forum, that our organization also falls under some of the best ones. The latest climate change has affected many countries' environment and the way of living in this world with dangerous consequences. To use the burnt trees from the forest fires and to convert them to crayons and to distribute to everyone in the district and ask them to paint a tree and when they paint a tree, the Young volunteers will plant those many trees. By this there is no wastage of burnt trees and even sponsorship of the saplings will be easy. Some of these inspirations have given me some more ideas that can be implemented in the NSO. Those are: 1. To work on pollution control in the respective states using the state government’s support. Use the support from the government and try to encourage others to use public transport and to work on waste management. 2. To have a Celebrity Youth Ambassador for the BSG such as Virat Kohli so that even the Growth of the organization will increase. 3. To create a group of young people who are enthusiastic about Science, where the NHQ can provide all the materials and support for making innovations using the ideas from the Young People making them Young Scientists of Scouts. 4. To start a climate change activity pack for all the Young Members of the organization who will follow it when necessary. 5. To create a big virtual network of Scouts and Guides across the country to work on the betterment of the local problems and to support each other. 6. To make a network like Scout. org for the Bharat Scouts and Guides. 7. To open a fund raiser for the development projects across the country and to sponsor every month one Scout or a Guide with the fundraised money for their project, which can be maintained by the National Youth Committee. 8. To train and engage more Scouts and Guides to represent the Bharat Scouts and Guides in National Eventslike Sports, Cultural, and Academic. This can be done by recognizing the Young People with the talent or skill and then giving them support for polishing their skills and representing BSG on bigger platforms.

BSG YOUNG GIRLS ON GLOBAL PLATFORM TIDE TURNER’S PLASTIC CHALLENGE Shimtilang Kharbuli of Meghalaya The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge is a Global Youth Movement to fight plastic pollution around the world. It is designed to inspire young adults to reflect upon their plastic consumption, discover solutions to reduce this consumption, and lead change in their homes, communities, institutions and office. This project helps everyone to learn the negative impacts of plastics pollution on nature and man, and will be inspired to change their own plastics used and they can also encourage others. Entry level is all about exploring ourselves how we can reduce plastics in our lives. At this level we have to only answer questions that are related to plastics that are given in the questionnaire. All the questions are related to usage of plastics in our daily lives. At Leader’s level we have to actually create awareness among the society, our friends, family, neighbours etc. talking to them about plastics and how we can deal with plastics for our better future. For example, organizing a talk show with our friends and family, a virtual exhibition related to plastics and discussing about how we can reduce plastics along with actions. Champion level is all about creating awareness on plastic wastes management, how we can recycle plastics instead of throwing them anywhere around us. And also taking a pledge with our friends and family members to try our best to make this world a better place and make it plastic free. For example organizing a session on plastic segregation, organizing a committee that can make sure the waste management is working. Taking a look at all levels and all the challenges that were divided under those 3 levels, I’ve realized that as an individual and as members of the group, we have learned a lot. We may not realize it while doing it but when it comes to summarizing all the work that had been done, many thoughts start flowing into our minds that can’t be expressed just by writing a sentence or paragraph. This tide turner’s plastic challenge was indeed a good experience for me and my team as a whole. Taking a small initiative, and being a part to make this world plastic free is a great feeling that can’t be described. The overall challenges were quite interesting to perform as we got a chance to communicate with different people around us. I hope we as a

forming an all-Girl Panel that will contribute to decision-making and the allocation of grant money. The purpose of the Her World Her Voice Girl Panel is to share decision-making with the girls and young women the project seeks to empower, and to demystify the grant-making process, so that WAGGGS can make strides towards being more responsive and accessible to girls and young women themselves. I am really honoured and privileged to be a part of this DDG Girls Panellist. During my training period I got the opportunity to learn many things. The fund to support our member organizations to implement projects that will empower and engage girls and young women from diverse backgrounds. The Her World, Her Voice programme is currently running across five countries – Rwanda, Nigeria, South Africa, Mexico

and India. It's really fun to work with WAGGGS in this project. I believe that every girl has the potential to change this and I would like to empower and equip them to do so. I would always be there for every girl and any girl. I would like to be the Change, See the Change, Plan the Change, Make the Change and Share the Change .
