Top tips for a summer BBQ Is there anything more enjoyable than cooking a BBQ on a hot summer day? Apparently not, according to *68% of Australians who plan to fire their BBQ up to three times a week this summer! Recognised as one of Australia’s favourite pastimes, cooking the perfect BBQ is considered a fine art by many including Food Technologist and Managing Director of meatcart.com.au Darren Walsh. With the summer months upon us, the self-proclaimed meat enthusiast is encouraging Gold Coast locals to head outdoors for the perfect BBQ at one of the many Gold Coast hot spots. Darren Walsh gives his top tips and secret tricks for a perfect summer BBQ. Pick wisely – Eye fillet, scotch fillet and porterhouse continue to lead in popularity Plan ahead – Remove your steak from the fridge 20 minutes prior to cooking it. Steak at room temperature cooks faster and absorbs the seasoning better, ensuring a tender not tough texture Fight temptation – Before sitting down to eat your perfectly grilled piece of meat, wait! By removing the meat from the grill and allowing it to sit and absorb the juices for five minutes, you will ensure you meal is richer with flavour Be selective – The best way to ensure your kebabs are a smashing success, and you avoid serving your beef overcooked and your vegetables undercooked, is to select vegetables that don’t require to be cooked through. Onions, capsicum, carrots and pineapple are perfect for a kebab Avoid multi-tasking – the biggest threat to ruining your perfect BBQ is serving overcooked meat – to ensure a seamless delivery, make sure you focus on your condiments first. Make the salad, boil the potatoes and cut up the bread before placing the meat on the grill Follow the steps – the secret to a perfectly barbequed piece of chicken is to cook it on a lower heat and basting it at the very end Delegate – the easiest way to achieve a perfectly barbequed piece of fish is to let the grill do most of the work. Grilled fish is most effective when placed on direct heat for a few minutes and removed once it flakes Call on support – want to cook the perfect sausage? Try boiling first for a few minutes before placing on a hot grill.

Bec Whitehead At only 21 years of age, Gold Coast beauty and talent, Bec Whitehead is well on her way to a career in entertainment that will surely take on the world. Many will know Bec as one of the Gold Coast’s most incredible voices, having performed the National Anthem at the Gold Coast Sun’s season opening last year and the Broadbeach Jazz Festival, as well as other high profile events. Some may know her from her very own online variety show, TV Head, or perhaps you recognise her from being voted one of the Gold Coast’s Sexiest People 2012. A born entertainer, Bec Whitehead embraces life with enthusiasm, dedication and a sensibility that is to be admired. With credentials such as these, we were excited to be able to speak with the young Starlet to get to know her personally, and to get the Heads-up on future plans.
She still plays with ISL GC Basketball and her team is sponsored by Le Gassick, Robina. “I played AVA basketball for three years, but had to stop because we’d have to fly to Cairns and Townsville which took the whole weekend, and because my career in music started taking off I had to choose. At the end of the day singing is number one!”
c i s u M
Bec Whitehead singing the National Anthem at the season opening of Gold Coast Suns “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to get as far as I can” says Bec, “If you don’t climb the ladder you never get to see what’s at the top, and that could be an ice-cream!” she laughs. Like many young children, Bec loved entertaining people and putting on little shows, jovially telling us “I just went to extraordinary lengths with outfits and making an idiot of myself.” “But then I really got in to basketball – I’m a sporting chick!” An avid fan of watching and playing basketball, Bec moved from Somerset College after being accepted in to the Gold Coast basketball team at 13, to PBC for the sport. “It was the best move I could have made” she explains, “you have to work very hard in public schools as there are so many more students and so much more competition!”
Bec Whitehead #13 Gold Coast Sexiest People “The Bulletin called me and they wanted me in it. I thought they were joking, I’m such a tomboy!”

Known for being a Jazz singer, Bec Whitehead tells us how she fell in love with the genre, “When I was around 12, Dad started playing Frank Sinatra and Jazz in the car when taking me to school and I just loved it.” At 15 she had her first performance at Southport Sharks to an audience of 500 and has never looked back. “A lot of people know me as being ‘Jazz’, I sing Blues and Soul and really dig expressing it on stage; it’s so nice.” “Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra - old school – they are my teachers” she states. Her latest inspiration comes from artists such as Beyonce, Jessie J and Only 1 Noah saying, “He’s just spot on with what he does.” Apart from performing at corporate events for the likes of Jamie Durie and Charlotte Dawson, Bec has performed at Live at Bond, The Arts Centre GC and Brisbane Jazz Club where most artists only get to take stage once a year. For six months she performed with the Les Wilson Swing Force Band, “It was a 15 piece band and had everything in it, it was huge!” she proclaims, “but I got to the stage where I just wanted to focus on my own product and my band.”
Currently working on an EP with Jacob Rhode and Sonny Stojanovic, Bec is aiming for a full album. “I’m climbing!” she says. “2014 is really going to be a big year for me musically, I’m ready to step it up.” We asked if her material will continue to be in the Jazz/Blues/ Soul genre, “I would definitely like to stick to Jazz, if it was like the ‘olden days’, I kind of wish I was around then” she explains, “I really love a Jazz audience, because they respect you and the music, and they’re beautiful.” “Nowadays so much is computerised, and I was sad when I received an email from Australian Music to announce a jazz singer who took out the award of the year, and I had no idea who she was. I was sad because if it were pop, everyone would know!” Showing her sensibility and mature business-mind Bec continued, “If I step out of the genre I can progress. At my age and where I am, I want to be playing at huge concerts and festivals where everyone is dancing and having fun.” “I actually don’t know what genre to place myself and new material in to and I love that, because that kind of makes it unique.” She went on to tell us, “It will be modern but it will have a two-genre cross-over. I want to stay true to what I do, but I want a beat to what it is I do. A bit more poppy, more modern” she says. “I want to create and be part of an atmosphere that is all about people having the best time of their lives, because that’s me! I’m just going with my heart with the lyrics, and with the music. There will definitely be horn sections because I love that. I’m still piecing it all together, but overall I wish for it to be a little more pop, so when it comes to making the video clips they can be played in all the clubs – eventually” she laughs.
TV HEAD Written, directed and presented by Bec
Whitehead, TV Head is a Variety Talk Show filmed at The Arts Centre Gold Coast and will be presented by LiveAlive on the www. AliveLive.TV channel and tickets are only $15 to be part of the live studio audience. Bec tells us, “TV HEAD is a perfect combination of everything, so it’s appealing to any age group. The aim is to have something different happening all the time and be along the lines of ‘Ellen’. I’m too young to be like Oprah!” she laughs. “It can have serious moments, but overall it’s about showing people to have fun in life.” She explains, “I invite Gold Coast celebrities and identities to come on the show and experience a relaxed and sometimes even comedic interview where I ask more personal and quirky questions. It’s great because there are a lot of people on the Gold Coast who work hard and really make a difference, yet it goes unnoticed. I want the audience to get to know them more personally rather than the professional side that other media take on.”
Bec Whitehead with Sex and Chocolate on stage of TV HEAD
Bec Whitehead in the recording studio Bec has teamed up with Canadian Club/Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Electro artist, Liquidsilva on a song called ‘Soft and Mellow’, which the title was inspired by an announcer on Gold Coast’s community radio station, Jazz Radio. Bec puts on her best male announcer voice, “You’re listening to 94.1 and things are getting soft and mellow” she mimics. “The song got 35,000 hits in the first 15 hours of it being online, but I don’t want to do anything more with it until he comes back to Australia and we can sit down together and set things up properly. I’d like to do it all with him.” Bec gives us the ‘Heads-up’ that she is looking at a new stage name and says, “You’ll be hearing a lot more from me and my music in 2014. I’ll be branding myself a bit differently and have a lot set up for the year. Video clips for my original songs are a priority and I’m going to learn to dance!” she proclaims. “I believe I’m a great singer but at the end of the day, to be successful in this field you need to be good at least two things and I want to do it all!” “I’ve even started to design my own clothes for my entertainment performances.” Asked if she was turning GaGa on us, she laughed, “No, my designs will be much like what I wear now, but I want them to be ‘amazing’, with crystals on my dresses and for them to be a perfect fit!” Another ‘Heads-up’ we received was a ‘secret project’ Bec is working on with CBD Robina, “They’re a good company and they put a lot of time and effort in to the Gold Coast,” she says “and I’m very happy to be working with them on a video clip and original song.” Sshh though, it’s a secret ;-)

Musical acts and artists go with any variety show and TV HEAD steps up to the plate with the best of our local talent. Sex and Chocolate performed at the last show and wowed the audience, especially those who hadn’t seen this amazingly talented act. Asked if Bec did a number or two we were disappointed to hear the answer as no, “With so many responsibilities already, I leave it to the guest artists” she tells us. Audience interaction is also a big part of the show, with various games and prizes. “I want them thinking, ‘ooh what’s coming up next’ and to be excited about coming up on stage and winning some prizes.” “I want to make sure the show is flowing and moving quickly; I don’t want people to be bored, because I don’t like being bored.” Laughing, “I couldn’t do a 9 to 5 job because of that.” Responsible for script-writing, sponsorships, getting high-profile guests and presenting, TV HEAD can take up to two months to prepare, and the next show on Thursday 5th December will be the last for the year. With surprise guests yet to be confirmed, we can tell you Bec’s main guest will be our city’s Mayor Tom Tate, and we certainly can’t wait to see how she manages to make that fun. The first show was sold out, and with a capacity of only 130, tickets to this one will sell out very quickly. You can book online via Bec’s website, www.becwhitehead.com Born in Tweed Heads and having lived in the same Gold Coast home for 20 years, Bec Whitehead has recently moved out of home to the northern end of the GC, along the beautiful Southport Broadwater Parklands. On her career, Bec says “Music is my number one and being a presenter is number 2.” She goes on to say, “The support that people bring to us in the entertainment industry is so important, and I want to say a huge thank you to anyone who has ever come to any of my shows or followed me social network!” We wish Bec Whitehead every success with her career and look forward to watching her conquer all of her dreams.
Bec Whitehead has kindly offered us two Double Passes to give away to the next episode of TV HEAD. Tickets will most certainly be sold out, so here is your chance to get to be part of the live audience. Simply visit www.thebizzgc.com.au and go to the competitions page to enter. GC Indie Film TV Network “Free You Be You” Premier Wednesday 20 November
GC Indie Film and TV Network will be presenting the premier of “Free You Be You”, an anti-bullying dance video created by producer Shirley Pierce with David Mace-Kaff and Lauren-Ann Smith of Evolve Film Productions. This film video celebrates bully survivors and delivers a message of hope and empowerment with a hip-hop twist. Shirley was inspired to do the video when she made the heartbreaking discovery that her daughter was the victim of both real life and cyber bullies. When other Gold Coast filmmakers learned of the project, they volunteered to donate their time and talent to also stand with bully survivors and let them know that they are not alone. GC Indie Film and TV Network played a supportive role in the production of this film and a crucial part in raising the last needed funds to make it a reality, when a member guest raised her hand to give what was needed at a network event. Founder of GCIFTN, Caroline Russo will conduct what is sure to be an interesting and enlightening chat when putting the spotlight on the film’s producer, Shirley Pierce, with a Q&A, and will invite the director, Tom McSweeney to the stage along with the Evolve Film Productions team.

2014 Australia’s Top Glamour Models Calendar SMT Entertainment has been developed over many years. Founder, Steve Coon was working heavily within the music industry as well as film and television on corporate productions, documentaries, music videos and TV advertisements. In 2009 Steve transitioned from Television Productions to Internet TV which progressed though Music, Internet TV Shows and Interviews, advancing to weekly 30 minute Music News Shows in the style of early MTV. The SMT brand had reached more than 1,000,000 internet hits per year, and the inclusion of glamour models saw a remarkable increase in that internet traffic. “I have a great respect for the Glamour Models” says Steve, “The successful models are not only stunning, but intelligent, driven women, and that is the side I like to bring to the world.” SMT Productions and Entertainment is now launching the very first Australia’s Top Glamour Models Calendar 2014 and it’s available now if you’re looking for something ‘glamorous’ to fill the Christmas stocking with. ARMOR ALL GOLD COAST 600
Q&A with Brooke Evers Q: With the list of credentials you have under your belt are you at heart a: DJ, model, dancer, radio host or journalist? A: There is something about each area of work I do that I will never give up. A lot of the credentials listed just so happened to roll into something else or other areas. I've loved everything I have learnt in my lifetime already but right now is the time to focus on music and performing because that is what I was born to do. Q: You’ve recently been to Bali and you seem to always be travelling; where’s your favourite place to party? A: I have DJ'd three times in Bali so far and I absolutely love it. Bali is the most amazing place but the people and tourists also love a good party. Personally my favourite place to party would be Las Vegas. The clubs and entertainment there cannot be compared to anywhere around the world. Q: With all of your international commitments, do you still call the Gold Coast home? A: The Gold Coast will always be home number one but at the moment planes and cars seem to be the place I sleep the most. Q: How long will you be spending in the Gold Coast this time? A: I am touring all over
Australia for the summer then I go back to LA for a few months in February. During the week I try to get home (Gold Coast) as much as possible to hang out with my family and friends. Q: What’s your favourite thing to do in your time-off? A: My favourite thing to do when I can get time off is eat good and healthy food and work on my fitness. Flying around the world can really have bad effects on your body so that's why I like to focus on that when I get the chance. Q: You will be joining boyfriend Matthew from the Stafford Brothers in the festival line-up for this year’s AMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 event; what’s it like performing together? A: We won't be actually performing together but I'm sure we will be crossing over at some point. We haven't performed at the same event before so it's going to be pretty fun especially in our home town. Q: Will we see the two of you share the stage at any point? A: I don't think so. Q: We hear this won’t be your first involvement with V8 supercars; is it true you once donned the outfit of a grid girl? A: HAHA. Yes I admit I once wore a grid girl outfit - This is where it all began for me. I loved that outfit!
Q&A with Maro Engel Q: You are relatively new in the Australian motorsport scene – tell us a bit about your career journey? A: Like most kids I started out with go karting. What started with a bit of fun soon became my favourite hobby. The more I practiced the more I wanted to race. After going through the karting ranks, finishing fourth in the European Championship in my last year, I stepped up to car racing when I was 15. From there I raced through different single seater categories through Formula BMW, Formula 3000 and Formula 3. After finishing 5th in British F3 Championship in 2006, I was approached by Mercedes-Benz and joined their Junior Driver program, racing again in British F3 in 2007. After finishing 2nd in the Championship that year, I was offered to test the Mercedes DTM car. A few months later I was confirmed as Ralf Schumacher’s teammate in DTM as a works
driver for Mercedes-Benz. I spent 4 years racing in DTM for Mercedes and I learned a great deal racing alongside Ralf and David Coulthard as team-mates. After racing for Mercedes in their SLS AMG GT3 in 2012, including my guest appearance for Erebus Motorsport at Phillip Island, which I won, I joined Erebus full time in the #9 SP Tools Racing V8 Supercar for 2013. Q: From Monaco to Broadbeach, how are you enjoying life on the Gold Coast? A: Well I like to joke that I have moved from one beautiful place to another. I really enjoy the Gold Coast lifestyle and most of all I love the whole culture about healthy living and sport. The nice weather is a nice bonus too! Age – 28 Home – Monaco /Broadbeach Nationality – German

Future Music Festival moves to a new venue in 2014, Brisbane’s iconic RNA Showgrounds, and festival goers are in for a better FMF experience than ever before thanks to a wealth of new indoor and outdoor stages to choose from. Rain, hail or shine, the party goes on! FMF 2014 will have a major focus on enhanced, state of the art audio and will deliver spectacular light shows with crystal clear sound, using new technologies such as audio mapping. So, no matter what stage you’re at, every punter will be able to soak up their favourite artists loud and clear. We spoke with Festival Director of Future Music Festival, Brett Robinson and one of the world’s biggest DJ/Producers, Deniz Koyu to start getting you primed for our favourite Electronic/Dance festival of the year. Tickets are on sale now through www.futuremusicfestival.com.au
Brett Robinson
Festival Director of Future Music Festival Our first question for Brett Robinson was in regard to the ‘alliance’ with Mushroom Group/Frontier Touring, and he was happy to explain, “We partnered up with one of Australia’s biggest music promoters. We want to give a foundation to the festival for it to grow further, and Mushroom/Frontier are responsible for bringing some of the biggest artists in the world to Australia, giving us the ability to be broader and potentially bigger in the types of talent we can attract and the resources.” On that we asked of any plans for other festivals and Brett says, “We’re definitely dipping a toe in to live music to develop that side. In the past we’ve had Franz Ferdinand, Stone Roses and New Order, and this year we’ve got Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and P-H-O-E-N-I-X who tick the box for Indie fans. We’re definitely more main stream compared to the heavier Soundwave. We’re strongest in the three areas of Pop, Indie and Dance.” Eric Prydz is the talk of FMF and punters want to be assured he will actually ‘show’ in 2014 after his ‘no show’ in 2008 due to his extreme fear of flying. “He was due to headline Summadayze and exactly that happened” says Brett, “He’s wanted to come ever since though has refused every opportunity presented until now. He bought a house in LA and is flying regularly between London, NY and LA, so has conquered his fear of flying to a certain extent, and will do long-haul flights when necessary. He knows he has a lot of fans here and wants to make amends for last time”. Brett explains, “He flies to Brisbane and to Perth, then from there we’ve got our hands on a tour bus that we’re configuring for him with a King bed, Wi Fi – like a big hotel room” he laughed. “He’s definitely dedicated to coming, gone through all the logistics and is keen to make it up.” We’re always keen to know if there will be any side shows and Brett tells us, “We generally don’t plan any until the festival is well attended. The festival is the very clear priority, and the experience for punters and bands is as good as can be.” This year punters struggled with bad weather and the conditions Page 22
www.thebizzgc.com.au
of the grounds at Doomben, and Future Music Festival has moved to RNA Showgrounds in response to the overwhelming feedback they received on the issue. “Feedback is so important,” says Brett, “we listen and we respond.” Committed to always developing the production side of the festival, he tells us “We’re working fiercely right now on drastically improving how much production we put behind the show. There are a lot of technological advances to show including pyrotechnic light shows. And people would love to have improvement in audio at outdoor shows – we’re working with all production experts for the entire space so everyone can get crystal clear audio, and ensure it sounds as good as people expect it to.” “FMF 2014 will have production that is bigger and better, like the ones we’re seeing online from overseas” he states. For local DJ’s we posed the question of how to get on the bill. “We’re always out there looking for new talent, and have people on the ground everywhere. If they’re good at what they do and are getting their music out there, we’ll come across them.” Brett advises, “Make sure you’re committed and trying your best to deliver at each performance. Even the little clubs are just as important to us. We deliver what the market wants, and if there’s interest in an artist from even the smallest pocket of a community, it’s of benefit to us. Future is about discovering new artists as well as seeing the biggest and the best.” He says, “We’re keen to see and showcase as much new stuff as we can.” Artists are welcome to contact FMF via their website and send details of links and performances. Future Music Festival started in 2006 for 5,000 people at Randwick in Sydney. Since then, the numbers have grown to 1.2million across the country and expanded in to Malaysia. “Our entire team have loved every minute of what they’ve done. The festival developed organically in the right way – referred from people’s own great experiences. We want that to continue!”
Deniz Koyu Specialising in progressive house and electro house, and last year dubbed “a blazing new talent” by MTV, Deniz Koyu is on the line-up for Future Music Festival 2014. We spoke with Deniz from his home in Germany just two days before leaving for a massive tour of the US with colleague and friend, Thomas Gold. “Thomas and I have been good friends for a long time already,” Deniz tells us, “and we will be promoting our new track, ‘Torn Apart’ on this tour, which will be released January 2014.” We asked him if he looked for anything in particular when doing a remix or working on collaboration with another artist, and his response was, “I believe it should always come naturally. There are a lot of artists I would like to work with and a lot of bands I would like to remix, but I wait for the right moment.” “Thomas Gold just came naturally – we were just talking about music and ideas one day, and decided to go to the studio and make a track! It was a very natural process.” On remixes he says, “I always get a lot of requests for remixes, and I only do one if I really feel the original track.” Seemingly always set to become a musician, Deniz began to learn playing the piano at the age of five, and grew to develop an enthusiasm for synthesizers and drums, with influences such as Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and Cassius. “I started making music on computer at 16 years, a hobby basically.” he says “Other kids would play Play Station and I would use music software. I was always creative at a computer and made a couple of songs, did some remixes – totally unprofessional” he laughed, “just random stuff.” “I used to go out with my best friends to a local club in my home town and gave the DJ one of my tracks who had a friend with a studio. He thought it was a good idea and signed the
track! I was 19 years old and still had a long way to go after that.” We asked him how he got his break and about the road to being a successful DJ, “Every artist who you see pop up in the scene has a long way behind them to get to that point.” He explained, “It can really take years to get to a point to be ready. You see a new artist and it seems like he came out of nowhere, but there’s always a longer story behind it. For me, it was 5-6 years until I saw success. You have to be lucky and meet the right people in the industry. I produced a lot of stuff and met people, another label, and step by step got more professional. I remember exactly the moment, when you freak out and can’t believe what’s happening” he laughs. “Fedde was impressed with one track I made, ‘Grunge’, saying ‘this is a hit record’, and from that moment we worked more closely, which is why I moved to Holland for two years. Flamingo office and studios were there and he gave me his second studio, which was an amazing opportunity for me. Management were in that building as well so I could see how it all worked and how being a DJ worked.” Residing back in his home town of Germany, Deniz is building his own studio, telling us, “I have so much stuff I’m working on. Already a lot of stuff is finished and not released yet, I’m getting everything ready!” On Future Music Festival, he excitedly says, “It’s my first time in Oz and I’m honestly so excited for it. It’s going to be one of my highlights of next year and it’s going to be hectic” he laughed. We asked if he had any particular artists he wanted to catch himself at the festival and his response, “Pretty much everyone I would like to see!” Deniz Koyu had proven to be one of the most promising talents in the genre of electro/dance, with his house anthems at clubs and festivals around the world being played over and over by Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Fedde Le Grand, Avicci, David Guetta and more, you name it! And with plenty more to come, we can’t wait to see his set at Future Music Festival 2014 in Brisbane.
Open Mic Night The Gold Coast is home to many musicians from every genre, and as we watch the shift change again to bring back the live music scene to what we knew in the 80’s and early 90’s, there are Open Mic and Jam nights appearing all over the city. Heavy Rock outfit, Lilly Rouge are currently touring nationally, supporting their new EP “Switchblade” which has the title track being nominated for Best Rock Song in the Musicoz Awards being held in Sydney this month. The four-piece band from the Gold Coast put dark lyrics with powerful female vocals and memorable riffs creating songs that ooze attitude. It’s no wonder they’re making noise in the local music scene. Having played alongside some of the best acts in the world which include Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Killers and Dead Letter Circus, and supported the likes of Everclear and The Presidents of the United States of America, Lilly Rouge are showing no signs of slowing down. We got to speak with song-writer and frontlady Lilly while she and the band waited for their flight to board enroute to their current national tour. In true artist form Lilly has been singing since early childhood and hasn’t even contemplated another career, “I’ve always sung and properly started when I was nine” she told us “I started playing guitar and writing songs from 11.” We asked how she came to write her first song and how she knew
she could do it, especially at such a young age, and she laughed as she says “I didn’t know, really. I don’t think it’s something you know how to do.” “I used to write poetry and read heaps, and I was just playing these chords that I liked together one day. Then I started humming a melody and putting it all together.” Telling us how her Mum and Grandmother are her biggest supporters she says, “I played a song for my Grandma and she got little tears. I was 13 and I knew I had it. I ‘think’ that was the first time I knew I’d written a song” she smiled. Of course Lilly has progressed since that first song and is now writing, recording, managing, booking and touring in her quest to “conquer the world”. “I’ve got a different and interesting way of writing these days” she explains, “I write the music and when putting the melody together I sing it with pretend lyrics, like ‘the cat sat on the mat’” she laughs “I record it, listen to it and write the lyrics from there. I like to play around with chord patterns and melodies. I’m making things more complicated but more interesting to listen to every time.” Adding to the excitement
of launching the new EP “Switchblade” which was launched on September 14th at the Tempo in Brisbane, the band’s biggest love is touring. We asked where their favourite place to play in Australia was and were surprised to hear the answer, “We love going to Melbourne and we love playing in Canberra!” She explained “Surprisingly, the venue is awesome. It’s called the Basement. When we first went to Canberra it was -4 degrees and we complained all day saying how we’d never come back” she laughed “and when we got to the gig it was just fantastic! There’s a really great scene down there and the people are really supportive. They want to get out and see live music.” This week will see Lilly Rouge play Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra and Wagga Wagga, followed by Bendigo, Melbourne and back to Sydney for the Musicoz Awards before going on to Perth. “Switchblade” was recorded at Analogue Hearts Studios in Everton Park, and Lilly wrote and recorded the EP herself with producer Stuart Stuart. The savvy artist also manages herself and
books all the band’s gigs. “We did a tour earlier in the year through a booking agency and only did nine dates. I learnt a lot through that and took it in to my own hands this time. We made a lot of connections and this way it’s cheaper. Literally two weeks after finishing the last tour I started working on this one.” The band’s line-up is firmly in place and Lilly explains how the songs have been re-arranged for stage, “The band has really made the songs their own, it’s great.” With plans on another EP early 2014 and a full 12 track album by the end of 2014, Lilly tells us how she would like to see the band being picked up by a management company or even a label. “We want to tour!” she states, “We’re always writing new material to ensure we’ve always got something new to tour with. We want to get in to the big festivals and tour internationally especially.” A ‘mostly’ full time musician who is also studying Masters in Jazz Voice at Qld Conservatorium, Southbank campus, Lilly says, “It’s never been anything else. I’ve always worked toward music and this is number my number one priority.”
Lilly Rouge is playing on the Gold Coast again at the Surfers Paradise Beer Garden on Thursday 31st October – Halloween, and we can’t wait to catch them live. It’s One Way! Living in a One Way street has more pro’s than con’s, in my opinion. There’s less traffic going by and easy to get through. It’s not a long street, so even living at either end of it, it literally only takes seconds to get around. It’s an active street, with a consistent flow of residents and visitors walking their dogs (some even walk their cats – true!), going on their daily run, walking down to the shops or across to Surfers and back. It grates me to no end when I see a car coming around in the wrong direction. Sure, sometimes it’s a new visitor to the street and they’re genuinely unaware (despite the very clear ONE WAY signs and the fact that all the cars are parked in the same direction on both sides of the road). Mostly though, it’s from residents and this is where it’s wrong.com! On several occasions when crossing the street with my dogs to go to the park, one in particular P-Plater zooms up behind us, startling me to the point of embarrassment as I literally jump half a foot in the air and let out a ridiculous noise that resembles a semi-scream. Because it’s a ONE WAY street I don’t expect any cars to be coming up behind me when walking in the opposite direction, and I just cross the road if no cars are coming in front of me, I don’t look behind.
Seriously Mr P-Plater, what is wrong with you? It will take you less than a minute to go around and come up the street legally without causing anyone a coronary and without the risk of running a dog, cat or person over! Another offender is a mature woman. Now she tends to go slowly, obviously aware of the dangers of driving the wrong way down a ONE WAY street, so WHYYYYYY?? I happened to be crossing the street one day when along she comes in the wrong direction. This is the moment I decide I’m making a stand, so walk in to the middle of the street as she approaches, giving the stare of contempt while shaking my head and mouthing ONE WAY. Going at a snail’s pace, she decides to try to get around me. I take my steps to stay in her way, shaking my head the whole while and then am actually taken aback when she starts shaking her head back at ME! Like “I’m” the belligerent one! Sheesh! Fortunately she was mature enough to not get out of the car and pick a fight with me, and because of her ‘maturity’, after a few moments I got off the street and let her go. It must have worked though because I haven’t seen her driving in the wrong direction since
Good Food Bad Food It seems that whether a particular food is good for you or not good for you depends on the season, or ‘trend’ of the time. We’ve been hearing it for years. Remember when pork was bad for you and fattening, and then we were told to “Put some Pork on your Fork”. Eggs were a wonderful source of protein and then we had the crisis alert warning they cause cholesterol. Red meat was a must for energy and now we’re animal-haters for eating it. Pfft! Wrong.com! It is one thing that advertisers of a particular food product come out with different claims every couple of years to boost their sales – we’re all aware and educated enough now to take what we will from their messages. I won’t even start on ACA or any of those ridiculous so-called ‘reporting’ programs with their ongoing and ever-changing ‘reports’ of WARNING about various foods. Facebook posts however, are doing my head in! Give it a break people! I don’t agree with some of the practices used to get meat, eggs, etc to the consumer and am 100% behind putting a stop to them, but I also believe in the ‘Food Chain’ which has existed for as long as life was spawned on earth. Being told I’m an animal-hater because I eat meat is offensive, unjust and an irrational statement. Countless images of animals being slaughtered are just disgusting and something I don’t want to have to see every time I log on to see what’s happening with friends on my wall. What if I constantly post
pictures of big juicy steaks, chops and roasts!? (Actually, this is another wrong.com, we don’t care what you had for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Just sayin’…). The latest offering in regard to milk is just gross, and I can’t believe people feel it necessary to post that we are drinking pus when we drink milk – EEEWWWW! Almost everything we put in our mouths has some form of bacteria and NEWSFLASH! We need bacteria! If you don’t want to drink it, that’s fine, and if you don’t want to eat it, that’s fine too. But please stop ‘forcing’ your opinions on others in this manner, it’s reminiscent of another character type that I’m sure you don’t want to be compared to.

Cyrus Bolooki – New Found Glory New Found Glory has been a force in the punk rock scene since their inception. From their debut ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ in 1999 all the way to 2011’s ‘Radiosurgery’, with eight releases in between, 3 gold albums and 4 consecutive Billboard Top 20 albums. New Found Glory have transcended trends and gimmicks by writing songs from the heart that listeners of all ages can relate to. Coming off a sold out tour for their near platinum selling Sticks and Stones album, New Found Glory went back to their roots and recorded their first ever live album over 2 nights at Southern California’s Chain Reaction, aptly titled “Kill it Live”. This album, released through New Found Glory guitarist chad Gilbert’s Violently Happy Records (in conjunction with Bridge Nine Records and 3Wise Records in Australia/NZ) on October 25th, features the band’s seventeen song live set as well as three brand new songs and an exclusive bonus track on the Australian release. All of the live tracks capture the energy and excitement of the live New Found Glory experience and the new tracks give the listener a taste of what’s to come from the band. We got to speak with New Found Glory drummer, Cyrus Bolooki about the band, the album and coming to Australia as part of the Vans Warped Tour ’13. Our first question was about the secret of keeping the whole band together for so long, “There’s no secret, I’m very proud to say we’ve had no line-up changes and all of us can look back remember where we came from, where we started. It keeps us level-headed and focused on what we want to achieve” he tells us, “We play anywhere we can and to anyone we can! All of us are real, the same people we as 16 year ago.” It’s taken 16 years for New Found Glory to release a live album and Cyrus explains, “Technically, we released a DVD that was a live concert, but this is tech live audio. We’ve put in three original studio tracks. It took that long to make a live record because no live CD can do justice to a New Found Glory show.” You can hear the excitement in his voice still as he goes on, “There’s a certain type of energy that goes with a live show. And I can’t stress enough, don’t use this as your only New Found Glory experience!” “It’s a nice little snapshot of songs from our career and people can see how it all blends together.” Asked why they chose the venue, Chain Reaction he says, “It sounds awesome! It’s a boutique venue and NFG has a history with it, we had our first big show there. We’ve gone to play much bigger! When we play there it’s always packed and we ‘knew’ we were going to get a ‘real’ NFG crowd – fans who will sing every single word, and they did and went absolutely nuts!”
On their favourite place to tour Cyrus says, “It’s sounds cheesy but it’s true, Australia is one of my favourite places in the world. Japan is up there as well, but it’s easier to communicate with you guys” he laughs. “We have a lot of friends who dream of going to Australia and I’ve been there half a dozen times. The crowd for NFG are amazing!” he states. On the Vans Warped ’13 tour which is bringing them back to Australia he says, “Oh we can’t wait! There are tonnes of great bands on Warped and it will be great to see them! The Offspring, who has been so huge in making pop/rock what it is now; Parkway Drive – I know their shows are insane; The Used spent a lot of time with us on Warped. We’re really good friends with Man Overboard and a there’s a lot of bands we’re familiar with.” With a lot of down time during the tour we asked if they had any plans outside of Warped, “Last two times we stayed in Melbourne which is one of our favourite cities in Australia. This time we have a chance to go somewhere we haven’t been, maybe venture somewhere inland. A lot of the bands stay in the same places, so we’ll most likely run in to old friends and make some new ones, and hang out at their shows. Maybe go on some expeditions!” Wrapping up the chat we asked if New Found Glory had anything to say for the SE QLD Vans Warped ’13 audience, “Oh Yeah, Brisbane is the first date for Warped so it will be new for all of us! We’re excited and everyone who gets our live record will get a little introduction of what to expect.” “Kill it Live” is available now!
