April Fools’ Day Origins April Fools’ Day stands among the most recognisable of days of the year. It's association with Hi jinx, shenanigans and general Tom Foolery is observed by many western cultures despite little being understood of its origin. The exact origin of April Fools' Day is somewhat of a mystery although among the more popular theories it is most commonly thought to have originated in France. In the year 1582, France moved from the Julian calendar to the more widely adopted Gregorian variety. The previous Calendar saw the observation of New Year’s Day on or around the 1st of April, most likely as it closely followed the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) During this period, large portions of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the New Year. The new calendar marked the New Year to begin on January 1st. It is thought that a combination of resistance, forgetfulness or ignorance saw that many people didn't observe the new date as significant. Those that did adopt the new Calendar soon began to ridicule the traditionalists thus labelling them 'Fools' and, as folk lore would have it, began to routinely trick the non-conformists. This theory is by no means historically accurate and various inconsistencies have been noticed. For example, England wasn't to adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752 but references to the April Fools’ tradition had already been refereed to (albeit ambiguously) in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392) nearly Two Hundred years before the France explanation. Similarly, The Romans celebrated a festival during the vernal equinox (late March) called Hilaria (Latin: hilaris, "hilarious). They themselves adopted this practice from the ancient Greeks. Perhaps another reason the origins of April Fools’ Day continue to be a mystery may be the very subject itself. There are few better topics on which people can offer seemingly viable explanations with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. Professor Joseph Boskin of Boston University famously lead a journalist down a merry old path when he offered that the practice began during the reign of Constantine. A group of court jesters and fools decided to become unionised. They then wondered if the Roman emperor would allow one of their numbers to become king for a day. Bemused by such a request the emperor granted their lofty wish and asked what name the new king would take. The name chosen was King Kugel. The newly appointed King Kugel, it is said, passed an edict calling for acts of absurdity on and throughout the day, with the custom becoming an annual event. The problem is this never happened. Professor Boskin invented the story on the Fly. Further to this, Constantine wasn't known for his lighthearted approach to ruling the masses much less be willing to offer his crown. Kugel, as it happens, is a traditional Jewish baked pudding or casserole.

Spaghetti Tree harvesting time... where celebrants placed oak sprigs in their hats in deference to the King. This practice referenced Charles II hiding in an oak tree to elude capture by Oliver Cromwell's forces after defeat at the Battle of Worcester. Those failing to comply with the custom could only be ridiculed until midday. The practice of April Fools’ pranking and general merriment, however, is far more enjoyable than the history of its namesake. So keep it safe, fun or respectable. (But not all three). Happy New Year! (We would like to point out that any and all enquiries regarding the cultivation of your own Spaghetti Trees should be directed to your local Mental Health Care Professional.) Written by Blake Shortland

Regardless of its origin April Fools’ day continues to have strong cultural significance and often produces highly elaborate and endlessly entertaining results. The purveyance of April Fools’ Mirth isn't just for the individual trickster. On April 1st, 1957 The BBC famously aired a Three Minute segment on their popular Panorama News Show reporting that farmers in southern Switzerland had recently produced a particularly healthy spaghetti harvest. The report went on to claim that the unusually mild winter and "virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil" were the key contributors. Footage of a Swiss family eagerly harvesting Pasta from spaghetti trees* along with convincing dialogue from the shows highly respected host prompted hundreds of viewers to call in seeking information as to how, they too, could grow their own spaghetti tree. The segment was convincingly ended with the assertion that, "For those who love this dish, there's nothing like real, home-grown spaghetti." Perfectly executed April Fools’ Day pranks certainly appear to have the ability to intellectually dismantle the most intelligent among us. Anyone falling prey to such a prank needn't feel all bad. Only last year, Google's popular analytics service had Web Developers and administrators from across the globe in a spin, when they mischievously added the International Space Station as a source of website traffic. Much like any popular social pursuit, there does exist a loose framework of rules and boundaries. The most notable among these is the 'No Pranks after Midday' Rule. This is thought to be a legacy from old renewal festivals that limit jovial anarchy to particularly strict time frames. The deadline might also be a result of the 17th century's Shig-Shag day,

“Illusions” makes history at Sanctuary Cove’s Village Theatre Australian Entertainer of the Year and master of illusion, Matt Hollywood, has signed a three-year residency deal with Village Theatre, Sanctuary Cove ... a first in the theatre’s 25 year history. Due to strong demand for tickets to Hollywood’s new world-class live show Illusions over the past two months, a deal was struck with the theatre to give the show a home for a record three years. After 20 years on the road performing up to 300 corporate shows each year, his residency at the Gold Coast’s iconic Sanctuary Cove means the entertainer, and father, can spend more time at home with his two young daughters. “Having a residency at a fantastic venue like Village Theatre is amazing in itself, but being able to spend more time on the coast with my girls is priceless,” said Hollywood.

Long before iTunes and iPods the hipsters of the day were spinning vinyl records. If you weren’t at the milk bar in your poodle skirt and bobby socks or slicking your hair back with brylcreem, like millions around the world you were tuning into the family radio to listen to famous Wolfman Jacks’ radio broadcasts. The dynamic cast of Shake Rattle ‘n’ Roll features 12 of the hottest dancers including Aric, Masha, Csaba and Jessica as seen on the hit television show ‘Dancing With The Stars’ along with the brilliant vocals of Glenn Craven, Jonathan Guthrie-Jones, Steve Lawson, Anthony Petrucci and Emily Wellington. The show pays tribute to many of the immortal rock ‘n’ roll legends of the 50s including Bill Haley, Chubby Checker, Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and Australia’s own rock ‘n’ roll “Wild One” Johnny O’Keefe.

Nicole Joy “Why it’s perfectly acceptable to eat dessert for breakfast” Nicole Joy on set of “The Great South East” on Channel 7

and has become so sought-after she now travels nationally to hold them all over our country. Gracious enough to take time out of her busy schedule, Nicole Joy met with us at the picturesque Pier at Broadwater Parklands and spoke of how she has grown personally and professionally, about her new raw desserts book and future plans.

We love a local success story and believe we have found an inspirational and sanguine one in Nicole Joy. A young entrepreneur, Nicole has found her passion in raw food and has just released her very first book “Why it’s perfectly acceptable to eat dessert for breakfast”. Australia is embracing our effervescent Gold Coast girl, and Nicole was even recently featured on Channel 7’s “The Great South East”. She has more than 30,000 Instagram followers and almost 10,000 on Facebook, and those numbers are rising daily, showing her popularity. A qualified teacher by trade, Nicole also holds cooking classes (or ‘uncooking’ classes as she quirkily refers) in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast,

Page 12

www.thebizzgc.com.au

Our first question was obviously about where the idea of raw desserts came from and how the book came about, and the response came with a beaming smile, “I put a flyer up on Instagram saying I was doing a raw dessert class and it sold out! It’s guilt-free dessert, so people loved it. Then I did another class a week later and there were 50 people there, so I did another and another… People were crazy for the content – the fact that you can have your beautiful desserts using whole and nutritious foods instead of using preservatives and glutens and dairy, and those sorts of things” said Nicole. “Then after a while I thought, I’m going to burn myself out and I thought, A Book!” she laughs. “I needed to be able to give the recipes and show people without always having to physically do it for them and that is how the idea came about.” This revelation came about in June last year and by November she had self-published the 120 page “Why it’s perfectly normal to eat dessert for breakfast”. “It was a really, really quick turnaround” Nicole states. We

asked her what the secret was and she replied, “I was fortunate enough to know people who worked in the industry and ladies who had done it before, so I worked with Lyndel Miller (Styling) and Mindi Cooke (Photography). They had worked together before and knew the process and were wonderful in helping me have a book in four months.” Nicole was introduced to raw food by a friend and laughs as she tells us, “I understand a bit about it but by no means am I a ‘Raw Foodie’. I actually started making my own recipes and made some for friends who told me I needed to be selling these. So I did! I sold them to Flannery’s and then a few cafes in the area where I live and they were all sold out within two days.” In true entrepreneurial style, Nicole took her treats to outlets offering for them to try them and if they liked them to buy them. They did, and so did their customers. Her raw desserts and cooking classes were in such demand that Nicole found herself up until 3am filling orders with not much financial benefit, and temporarily found her love for it had diminished. “I had a break from it for a while and then came back to it through guidance from my Palates instructor who told me to go back to your roots – go back to the food thing, because she knew that’s what I loved, and she was right.”

“Without going through that I wouldn’t be where I am now.” Her love of food which is now her passion was once a chore for Nicole Joy, who suffered from an eating disorder, as many young women do. On the subject she states firmly, “Without going through that I wouldn’t be where I am now.” She explained, “My Yoga teacher introduced me to raw food and taught me how to mediate. I believe that’s one of the major reasons for my recovery. The whole eating disorder gets thrown around a lot, but there are a lot of young girls who suffer from it, and I think by opening up and talking about, it brings a light to what is normally a dark place and something that nobody seems to want to talk about. I thought by shedding a light on it and sharing my experiences that it would show people you can get passed it and you can move forward. There is an alternative

to your traditional going to see a psychologist and stuff like that. It definitely brought me to where I am today, so there was that light at the end of the tunnel.” She went on to tell us, “Coming from an Italian background it was difficult, because food is a way of life. It was a joy, a pinnacle part of our lives and then all of a sudden I was no no no! I went to strict calorie counting, diets and it was a real chore to eat. I was a bit yuck there for a while, though I’m proud to say I’ve come out the other side and food is no longer a chore, it’s my passion!” We asked Nicole if there were plans on another book following the success of her first one and she excitedly told us, “Definitely! It’s already in the works! But not just desserts – I realise people want more every-day things. Lunches and

dinners, and snacks and nut-free options! Pretty much all the desserts in this book contain nuts, which aren’t great for those with allergies; and you can’t take a lot of those things to school any more. I want to do savoury stuff and healthy muffins and banana breads, that kind of stuff. Raw desserts were my entry in to the market and now I want to please more people!” We can expect the new book by end of year, in time for Christmas. “Why it’s perfectly acceptable to eat dessert for breakfast” features 40 guilt-free desserts. They are raw desserts that are gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free. Healthy eating never tasted so good! You can purchase your own copy through Nicole’s website www.nicolejoyinspire.com

Gold Coast to Premier Spectacular Outdoor Beach Opera This May, our city will provide the backdrop for a magnificent new outdoor production by Opera Australia, Australia’s largest performing arts company. Presented by Opera Australia in partnership with Bleach* Festival, City of Gold Coast, and Tourism & Events Queensland, Opera on the Beach is an outdoor opera spectacular that will see Mozart’s joyous The Magic Flute performed under the stars on the rolling shores of Greenmount Beach. Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said this new home-grown production was made especially for this Gold Coast setting. “We are thrilled to have a new home in Queensland! Opera on the Beach is an initiative we have been working on to bring to Queensland for the past two years, and it’s wonderful to have the support of the Bleach* Festival to make this possible,” Terracini said. Performed in English, this new production, adapted and directed by Australian theatre luminary Michael Gow, stars some of Opera Australia’s finest singers alongside a chorus drawn from the local community and the Gold Coast’s own Surf Life Saving Clubs. Together, they battle the serpent, put a spell on the guards, and rescue the princess, before sending you home with stars in your eyes, sand in your shoes, and songs in your heart. This outdoor event has been tailor-made for Queensland and designed for a 21st century audience; with a superb live orchestra, sumptuous costumes, countless theatrical surprises and a fireworks finale. Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey, said this new event would shine an international spotlight on the Gold Coast as a premier tourism and event destination. “Opera on the Beach is an exciting addition to Queensland’s arts and cultural event calendar, providing visitors with a unique experience exclusive to the Gold Coast,” Minister Stuckey said. “Securing events like Opera on the Beach is another great example of our commitment to growing Queensland’s tourism and events industry.” Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said Opera on the Beach provided an exciting opportunity to celebrate the Gold Coast’s unique landscape and iconic beach culture through the arts. “We already have some of the world’s best beaches, so setting this large-scale event against this picturesque backdrop will ensure the Gold Coast cements itself on the world event map,” Mayor Tate said. “Opera on the Beach will be quintessentially Gold Coast - showing the nation and the world that we are not afraid to do things a bit differently in our city.” The Magic Flute plays three performances 9-11 May 2014 at Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta as an extension of the third annual Bleach* Festival,

the Gold Coast’s largest arts and cultural festival. For more information visit www.operaonthebeach.net. Book of the Week

reviewed by Ross Preston

Pacific Fury by Peter Thompson A riveting history of how Australia and her allies defeated the Japanese. Pearl Harbour. Kokoda. The fall of Singapore. Curtin's fight with Churchill. The bombing of Darwin. The Battle of Midway. POWs. Kamikaze. Hiroshima. These words alone are enough to convey the terror, courage and drama of the Pacific War, when the balance of power stood on a knife-edge and when the future of Australia herself was on the brink - threatened by Japanese aggression on one hand and British apathy on the other. Until very recently the history of the Pacific War has largely been written from the American perspective. Now, for the first time, Peter Thompson places Australian voices and action at the heart of a struggle that took an unimaginable number of lives and only ended with the unleashing of the most powerful weapon the world had ever seen. Drawing on original research and written with detail and pace Thompson brings both the people and the battles to life in a way that is very readable. This book goes into some

detail about the barbarity, sacrifice and the bravery of the Pacific War. This account is also important because it tells the history using interviews and first-hand accounts of Australians. Accounts from the ordinary soldier up to the generals and politicians and places them at the heart of the struggle, recreating the battles (both physical and political) of land, sea and air that they were involved in. Of particular interest to me were the first chapters which gave a geopolitical overview of the various countries involved going back as far as the first European contact with Japan. I found this an engrossing account of an enormous and complex subject, the Pacific War and Australia’s part in it. And along the way it also lays to rest the slurs and smears from US and British leaders about the quality and bravery of the Aussie fighting men and women. In the lead up to ANZAC Day its always useful to remind ourselves of the reasons why we commemorate our service people and this book gives us some of the more profound ones.

ONE MAN CREW PREMIERES COMEDY FEATURE FILM AT GOLD COAST FILM FESTIVAL GOLD COAST Thursday 20 March

CINEMA RELEASE: 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Review by Peter Gray

Release date: 6th March Director: Noam Murro Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Lena Heady, Eva Green, David Wenham, Rodrigo Santoro, Callum Mulvey Classification: MA15+ (Strong Bloody Violence and Sex Scene) Prequel? Sequel? Side-quel? I’m not entirely sure of the best way to describe ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ in regards to its predecessor ‘300’, but whatever the case it’s a downgrade from a film that wasn’t exactly screaming out for a companion piece. Speaking of which, perhaps companion is the best word to label the film as it shows us a different point of view of some of the events from the first film, so when King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) was exclaiming “THIS IS SPARTA!” and paving the charge into battle with the Persian forces, it turns out our new protagonist Thermistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) was observing from the sidelines. I’ll hand it to the filmmakers for attempting an interesting spin on the story but it can’t help but feel all too dull and familiar as Thermistokles’ tale at sea with his army of men lacking any real drama or convincing camaraderie (unless you count the extreme homo-eroticism angle played up by the abundance of half-naked men that are his crew). In addition Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton is rather unproven as a leading man, and whilst ‘300’ lead Gerard Butler isn’t always convincing in his work, it can’t be denied that his larger-than-life performance suited the original. Stapleton, as much as he fits the part on a physical level, is far too one-note and, as such, comes off bland and disinterested. With Stapleton’s performance lacking, it seems only fitting that the film shift its focus on to Eva Green as Artemisia, a Greek-born naval commander who turns her back on her own to lead the Persian army into battle. As ridiculous and as over-the-top as she is here, even going so far as to decapitate an Athenian soldier before planting a kiss on his lifeless head, Green manages to get away with it as she appears to recognise the type of film she’s in and throws herself into the scene-chewing part with aplomb. Director Noam Murro (whose only major film credit is the indie comedy ‘Smart People’) wisely allocates Green a hefty amount of screen time as she effortlessly dominates whatever frame she’s in, even when she appears slightly awkward wielding a sword in some of the climactic battle scenes. Murro has done a commendable job of mimicking the same style Zack Snyder implemented for the original, and it’s similarly violent (you’ll never have to wonder what happens to someone’s face after getting tramped on by a horse after seeing this) but there’s next to nothing that sets it apart from ‘300’, or even a clone like ‘Immortals’, with their only being one moment it truly comes alive on its own merits when Thermistokles is lured by Artemisia for a parlay and she winds up seducing him, resulting in a rather hilarious sex-come-battle scene that ends with a topless Green brandishing a sword. If it wasn’t for Green ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ would be near torture to sit through, and though Stapleton isn’t helping matters with his lifeless turn, he isn’t really the biggest problem as the screenplay (co-authored by Snyder) fails to deliver anything of worth. Thermistokles is written as just a soldier with no emotional attachment to speak of, and because of this it’s a hard task for an audience to care. A sub-plot involving a father-son duo fighting alongside each other hopes to deliver something of an emotional push but it too falls flat and only really highlights actor Callum Mulvey’s inability to play subtle. Given that it’s been 8 years since ‘300’, ‘Rise of an Empire’ certainly hasn’t been a rushed job and though I don’t suspect anyone was expecting this to outdo its predecessor, I didn’t think what we would get would be so boring. A direct follow-up involving the Spartan battle against the God-like Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro, returning with even more camp swagger than the original) that was teased at the conclusion of ‘300’ seems like the best way to of gone, and given the final frame of this movie they’d like us to think we’ve got more coming but if this is an indication of where this series wants to go, they should end this battle whilst they can. My rating 2/5 (A battle that should end)

The independently produced, pop culture flavoured, mockumentary comedy Rodney Fickle Online Athlete (www.facebook.com/ rodneyficklemovie or rodneyfickle.com ) will debut during the Gold Coast Film Festival at Pacific Fair shopping centre. The screening, Saturday April12th at 7:15pm will form part of the recently re‐envisioned Queensland Showcase for the 2014 Festival and will be the public Premiere for the micro budget film put together largely by a one man crew, a cast of friends and local actors. Rodney Fickle Online Athlete is the story of one man’s journey to leave behind a dead end job and chase down his dream of becoming a professional video gamer in the world of E‐Sports. As a first time filmmaker, Scott Dickson served as writer, director, camera operator, co‐producer, editor, and animator on the film while his wife Ariana Dickson acted as producing partner. The filmmaker said that the experiences he garnered and lessons he learned in the five years it took to complete the feature film were invaluable. “I think putting a feature film together on my own has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. It’s really taught me what it is to make a film the hard way, with next to no crew and a micro-budget. The process has really opened my eyes to what a fantastic place the Gold Coast is to make movies. Where else can you decide you have a story to tell, find people within the creative community to help you tell it and then shoot it against the backdrop of one of the most magnificent and fastest growing cities in the world?” The film has contributions from some of the best emerging performing artists and musicians the Coast has to offer, as well as musical contributions to the soundtrack from US Band The Vegabonds. “The fact that so many talented people have gotten behind the project and offered support validates the story as one we can all relate to and the humour, while sometimes crude is ultimately universal. The film is a mockumentary style comedy and tells a story that is familiar to all of us, whether we’re Gamers’ or not. It’s the story of testing boundaries and trying to find your place in the world. Of course, all of this is done through a prism of video games, irreverence, hilarity and a heart of gold. In 2014 I am hoping to have the opportunity to build on what appears to be an emerging focus on Film-making on the Gold Coast and continue to tell stories here. I believe we need to focus on higher end flicks that tell stories that are highly entertaining, have a commercial edge and focus more on target markets that aren’t necessarily getting the love they deserve. The video game industry is a great example of a behemoth market, growing exponentially at a rate hard to keep up with and while there is content for that market out there, it has historically been focused on making “video game movies” and not on telling people’s stories. We’re hoping that the Gold Coast Film Festival screening will help provide a door way to the next project and further opportunities to work with more creative partners, practitioners and companies on the Gold Coast in the future.” Rodney Fickle Online Athlete Screening details: Saturday April 12th, 7:15PM Pacific Fair Cinemas Tickets available from http://bit.ly/1kN2vln Trailers, teasers, clips and stills available at www.facebook.com/ rodneyficklemovie or rodneyfickle.com

A Sound Argument Could more live music be the answer to curbing alcohol fuelled violence? Recently a News Corp article discussed the notion that more available live music could help reduce the incidences of violence in our local pubs with INXS guitarist Tim Farriss weighing in on the debate. His comments have certainly echoed the sentiments of many regarding the importance of live music’s role in keeping patrons entertained in licensed venues. In recent times we have seen a decline in the amount of live music on offer across licensed venues with restrictions on noise being one of the major contributing factors. Drinking essentially has become the entertainment for many in the absence of any other options. Farriss is qualified enough to add some weight to this debate after his role in arguably one of the greatest rock bands the world has seen. “There would be a lot less alcohol-fuelled violence if people were getting their rocks off watching bands live… But nowadays everybody just stands around in pubs and gets geed up for a fight,” says Farriss in an interview with News Ltd. The focus on this anti-social behaviour has been in the media spotlight for some time now with campaigns to highlight the dangers of the coward punch for example. However it seems that few in media or government have made any connection with the idea that we need to offer more entertainment options for the public rather than reducing them. Noise restrictions have forced many venues to cease live entertainment and now the popular trend in government policy seems to be to enforce reduced operating hours for venues adding a further threat to the live music scene. “People are going to drink but let ‘em drink in an environment where they’re spending a lot of time looking at some band, dancing, being entertained. They forget about the alcohol as their only focus, for a start” Farriss says It is certainly refreshing to have someone stand up with a recognised voice and put some credibility to what the industry has been saying for years. Restrictive government policies and the subsequent decline in the live music scene are not only hurting the industry stakeholders financially but potentially contributing further to a rise in the anti-social behaviour that live music is trying to counter. Responsible management of a healthy entertainment scene can be a great step toward reducing the incidences of alcohol related violence, an outcome we all want to achieve. Live music is a great medium to unite people and encourage greater social harmony so why would we want to jeopardise such an important part of the solution?

We welcome any discussion on our Facebook page and will endeavour to address those topics through this column in future publications. www.facebook.com/ALERTforum If you agree with the need to preserve the live music industry you can sign the petition via the link below. https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/qld-government-reformnoise-control-regulation-in-licensed-venues To get up to date with ALERT’s campaign on this topic visit via the web page below which contains the full proposal submission to the QLD State Government along with other media such as newspaper stories and radio interviews. alert-forum.org/downloads

Something Really Beautiful “Courtney’s Love Killed Kurt Cobain” is the debut single release from Something Really Beautiful. The songs are independently recorded and produced, available on iTunes, Amazon, triple j unearthed, internet radio and limited edition CD. Videos for the two tracks are nearing completion, and there is a five song EP titled, “In Memoriam” due for release later in the year. 5th April 2014 is the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death and these two songs are paying homage to that with reverence and deep respect from the artist. It will be a time of loss and reflection for a lot of Nirvana/Kurt Cobain fans. These songs are given, as a small offering to the spirit of Kurt – a great songwriter and musician gone too soon. Currently these and other original songs from Something Really Beautiful can be heard live at open mic sessions around the Gold Coast, with plans to play more extensively later in the year. Copies of the CD are available for purchase at the venues.

Singer, songwriter and guitarist of Something Really Beautiful came to us with his CD and we were impressed with his obvious passion on the subject of his music as well as the love for his art. The cover shot of the CD is full of detail depicting the mood and meaning of the track, and reminded us of times gone by where you would buy an album and study the cover and sleeve for hours, getting the feel of the artist and what the album was really all about. We just hoped his song would live up to the high expectation created by seeing the well-presented CD. “Courtney’s Love Killed Kurt Cobain” is somewhat of a dark popsong, not dissimilar to the style of Nirvana, though not quite as well produced or artistically meaningful. In saying that, this is certainly a catchy sombre tune with commercial viability, and anyone who believes in the conspiracy against Courtney is going to love it and find it very meaningful. There will no doubt be a legion of Nirvana/ Kurt Cobain fans who will embrace the song for the tribute that it is. The video clip is due for release and we’ll put it up on our website for you as soon as we get it. If you can’t wait til then to have a listen, then go to iTunes, Amazon or Triple J Unearthed and download it now!

WIN!

Veal

What happens when two best mates write too many rock songs for their progressive metal band? When Chris Dennis and Dan Maynard stepped into the studio in mid-2013, they didn't know what to expect. Having both spent the last couple of years writing proggy riffs with crazy times they wanted to make something a little different. When they emerged two hours later they came out with a heavy dose of balls-to-the-wall rock music with bombastic drumming and big, catchy riffs. 'Veal' had surfaced. Having previously teamed up in bands like Elk, Candy Pain, The Green Whistle and Portraits, Veal is Dan and Chris' latest and most stripped back project. An essentials-only drum kit, a guitar, several distortion pedals and a microphone is all they need to extract postalt-rock from their collective minds. Armed with songs like "Peach, I Could Eat a Peach for Hours", "I'm Low on Gas and You Need a Jacket" and "Five Minutes Turkish", Veal is not just another rock n roll band. They are 2014's answer to the question: “Where did all the rock go and how can I get it back?” Veal is the answer. Keep an eye out in 2014 as the band's first EP 'The Meating' is due for release and the band are set to hit the stage (with live bass player Matt Nosworthy) for the first time at Wallapalooza. Let the rock n roll begin!

Teale When Andy (CIA) told us he was adding a stage and including acoustic artists in the courtyard of the Wallaby, we jumped at the chance to recommend one of the Gold Coast’s best talents, Teale. Having launched his CD, “Good Times Start Right Now” in an acoustic set at The Basement we knew this would be the perfect arena for punters to experience first-hand Teale’s entertaining performance and his undoubtedly catchy and well-constructed songs. Teale said to us at the time, “If you have people engaged with a live acoustic song, when you add the whole band or listen to the produced recording, it takes it to another level.” We saw his acoustic first, and “Good Times Start Right Now” is a favourite in the Playlists. With a music style that Teale aptly labels SPOCK (a mix of Soul, Pop and Rock), he fits into almost all genres and has an honest sound and feel that is also commercially viable. Mark this set as a ‘Must See’ at Wallapalooza! Oh, and this will be a “Silent Acoustic Set” – the audience will all have headphones to enjoy the sounds at your own level.

Wallapalooza 2014 The line-up for Wallapalooza 2014 has been announced, and this year’s home-grown event will be back bigger and better than ever. Expanding from last year’s 16 bands and two stages, 2014 is bringing 27 acts and three stages, taking over the Wallaby Hotel this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, and we can’t wait! For anyone who hasn’t been to Wallapalooza in the past three years, this is a music event created by local industry leader, Andy Clark from C.I.A. (Clark Independent Artistry) with the invaluable help of Alicia Hennessey, for local musicians and our locals and visitors who love live music. Gold Coast’s iconic Wallaby Hotel is transformed to host the biggest day of the year for original and local live music. Wallapalooza gives our artists the chance to perform in front of a large crowd with great sound production, giving them the vital experience necessary to follow their chosen careers. And, it provides us locals (and visitors) with the opportunity to be

entertained by some of our city’s finest musicians in a controlled and safe environment where food, beverages and entertainment are in abundance. Best of all, Wallapalooza is a FREE event, thanks to CIA and the ever-important sponsors – The Wallaby Hotel, Canadian Club, Jim Beam, Rock City Studios, Saligia and Skeleton Key Designs. We’ll bring you interviews and breakdowns of all the artists over the coming editions leading up to Wallapalooza, as well as artist tracks and clips on the Wallapalooza page on TheBizzGC website. This issue we are pleased to present Teale and Veal. Veal will kick off the proceedings on Sunday 8th June, and we thought it fitting to kick off the Wallapalooza story with Veal. If you haven’t done so already, put the date in your diary – you don’t want to miss Wallapalooza 2014, and learn what all the fuss is about. Sunday 8th June at the Wallaby from 12noon.

Parking Fine Hypocrisy

Parking fines – the bane of my existence! If you’ve read all the wrong.com posts you’ll know that I live in a street that has 2hr parking restrictions, even though there is not one single sign anywhere on or around the street letting you know, and yes all of us here have been stung – even the new neighbour on his first day who left a big note explaining he was waiting for his parking permit to arrive! The Parking Officers are ruthless to a point of absurdity, yet on the 15th February the boat pictured was ‘moored’ in the exact spot where I personally received my TWO fines in TWO days because I was almost 20 minutes passed the TWO hours. This boat remained in this spot (taking TWO parking spaces) until the 16th March! And guess what? Not one single fine! What The…? The neighbours of the area discussed the ‘moored’ boat asking if anyone knew who it belonged to and it became quite apparent that the owner didn’t even live in the street. What The…? Okay, so it’s a very nice boat, and no-one’s complaining that it’s an eye-sore; it was just in front of our homes ‘moored’ for a month with no penalty. And because of the size of the boat, the resident who has the driveway in front of it could not see oncoming cars, and had to back right out onto the street with fingers crossed that one wasn’t coming; so as well as being exceptionally unfair to the rate-payers and renters of the street, it was a public liability. Please note that our complaint is NOT with the boat owner, it is with the Council and the hypocrisy of the whole situation. Why are we, the residents, preyed upon and fined as if we are responsible for the annual income of the parking officers from this area, and someone who lives nowhere near the area is able to ‘moor’ a boat taking two spaces for an entire month? When placing a call to Council we were told that as long as the boat and trailer were registered, there was nothing they could do. I pronounce yet another exaggerated What The…? On March 16, I came home just in time to see the boat being driven away by a black ute and wondered if they were just taking it out for the afternoon and

bringing it back, or if they had found a more suitable ‘mooring’ for it. From my desk I can see out to the street and it wasn’t long before I noticed the black ute with boat pull up. I grabbed the camera and went to the balcony and watched as they ‘moored’ it right back where it had been for the last month. I asked the young man if he had a permit and he asked me if he “needed” one. Explaining that the street had a 2hr parking limit and actual “residents of the street” needed a permit, I asked him if he had received any fines in the post. “No!” he said seemingly surprised, “I didn’t even know there was a limit on parking in the area.” I would like to point out that he was very nice and courteous when speaking with me, and again the complaint is not against him. After a brief chat he politely apologised for any inconvenience and said he’d try and find a spot further up the street. I politely advised him against it as the same 2hr limit applied. Now that I had proof the ‘moored’ boat taking two parking spaces had not received a single fine in an entire month of being permanently parked in a street with a 2hr parking limit, I lodged a written complaint with Council, and requested my parking fines be revoked as well as those who live at the property where the boat was parked, and those who live across the road. I mean, that seems fair don’t you think? They have set a precedence now showing us that there are rules for some that don’t apply to others. Why can someone who does not live in the area be allowed to use two spaces 24/7 for a month and the residents of the street not be allowed to use one space for more than two hours? It’s unfair, and typical of our ‘system’ these days, makes no sense. Today is 23 March and I am yet to receive a response to my written complaint and request. Of course I’ll keep you updated ;-) The gossip in the street is that the boat owner is a friend of the parking officer who patrols this area, and we’re even talking about all chipping in and buying a boat to ‘moor’ on the street to see how long it takes to get a fine.
