When her baby was only a toddler, he was whisked away by the nuns to America for adoption. Philomena (Judi Dench) spent the next fifty years searching for him in vain. that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena's son, but also the powerful bond that grew between Philomena and Martin.

Based on Sixsmith's acclaimed book "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a Fifty-Year Search", the film is a bitter-sweet drama, a compelling narrative of human love and loss and ultimately a celebration of life. Judi Dench's phenomenal lead performance has "Oscar" written all over it.

SURF N’ INK TATTOO FESTIVAL CELEBRATES FIVE COLOURFUL YEARS ON THE GOLD COAST

What do you get when you combine an A-list of Australian and international tattoo artists, gorgeous tattooed pin-up girls, tattoo competitions, pro wrestlers, martial arts, circus acts, extreme sport, celebrity guests and a crowd of 10,000 ink-loving fans? It’s SURFn’ Ink, Australia’s most colourfully creative collection of all things inked, celebrating its 5th year at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre from 10-12 January 2014. At the three day January event, SURFn’ink organisers will present another huge showcase of Australian and international tattoo artists, attractions, entertainment, exhibitions, music and celebrities. SURFn’ink organizer Marco Ventura says five years on, the SURFn’ink brand is stronger than ever. “It’s been a ‘whirlwind’ trip since the first SURFn’ink at the Gold Coast Convention Centre back in 2010 and the event has grown in popularity every year. “We always aim to bring something new and exciting to the SURFn’ink table every year, and the January event will be no exception. “We have added some new attractions and entertainment to keep SURFn’ink fresh in 2014. One thing that does stay the same is the atmosphere that draws artists from around Australia and the world. They all love the destination and say they enjoy the relaxed and friendly vibe they get from the people of the Gold Coast. “We already have tattoo artists coming from USA, Italy, Samoa, China, France, Taiwan, Japan and more bookings are coming in every day,” says Marco. Elvis tribute artist Dean Vegas will make a special guest appearance at SURFn’ink on Sunday 12 January. Dean will be helping out with the judging of the inaugural Elvis tattoo competition before he takes the stage for a 45 minute, spectacular Vegas-style performance of the favourite music of Elvis. In honour of Elvis’ birthday, the 60th Anniversary year of Elvis’ music in 2014, and the guest visit by Dean Vegas, SURFn’ink organisers are offering

free entry throughout the weekend to anyone dressed as Elvis. Although more new events have been added to the mix for 2014 such as circus acts, a team of pro wrestlers from the Australian Wrestling Association, a demonstration of extreme sports and a line-up of special guest celebrities, all the favourites from previous years will be back. Daily tattoo competitions in a number of categories, ‘Freak of the Show’, an annual highlight for the most outrageous inked or pierced entrant, and Miss SURFn’ink, a bevy of tattooed beauties in swimwear and evening wear, will all make a much-loved reappearance in 2014. Marco says the popularity of tattoos, especially here on the Gold Coast, is phenomenal. “There is so much interest in our industry and SURFn’ink is our opportunity to show tattoo fans the best work they will find anywhere in the country, if not the world.” “People who come to SURFn’ink will see some of the best international artists tattooing, and can book in to have a tattoo done while they are there. “Many of these artists are leaders on the international circuit when it comes to innovation in tattoo design,” says Marco. To see the list of artists attending in 2014 or for more information about SURFn’ink, visit www.tattoofestival.com.au Tickets for SURFn’ink are available at Ticketek. The Beach Hotel, New local Hot Spot Launches “Ladies Night” Live Music, new beer garden, great location and this week the Beach Hotel in Broadbeach launches the return of the classic “Ladies Night!” Duty Manager, Matt Dwyer says “We want to turn The Beach Hotel in to a place to come and have fun, and return a quiet little spot in to a local hot spot.” Thursday 12th and Friday 13th (lucky for some) will be the first nights of “Ladies Night” and will be every Thursday there-after. From 6pm to 9pm there will be live entertainment, cocktails and cheap shots (as in drinks, not insults) and basics. Boinz Acoustic will play the inaugural evening on Thursday night, and ladies we can confidently tell you that Boinz has the best smile in the industry, is full of energy and will certainly have you dancing, though watch out for his wink ;-) From Live music to dance music, DJ Fluoro will be making his debut performance at “Ladies Night” playing all the favourites and remixing Top 40’s. We’ve heard the real groove begins once everyone’s up on the brand new 50sqm dance floor. And expense hasn’t been spared with new lighting and sound system to create the ideal atmosphere. With a full kitchen, your dining options are plentiful and you can enjoy everything from seafood to a tender steak, so you can go straight from work and make a whole night of it. In line with being a local ‘hot spot’, The Beach Hotel is underway with renovations including a great back deck that will bring back the one thing missing in the Gold Coast entertainment scene – a Beer Garden! Once upon a time we enjoyed Sunday afternoons in the open air, having a cold-one (or 5) with our friends and enjoying the honest and fun entertainment of good live music. The Beach Hotel is bringing that back and we couldn’t be happier. Sunday Sessions will be launching soon, so keep an eye on our online Gig Guide and we’ll feature everything it will have to offer in the next edition. Matt says, “It’s not the flashiest place on the Gold Coast, but it definitely has a great atmosphere” Situated at 2663 Gold Coast Highway, across from the ‘Big House’,

just up from Pacific Fair and just down from the main Broadbeach dining and shopping precinct, the location is great. Parking if you’re driving and have a designated driver, buses, taxis and soon even the mono-rail will easily get you to and home from The Beach Hotel. Stay updated with specials and events at www.facebook.com/ beachhotelbroadbeach. We’ll see you at the local ‘hot spot’! Boinz Acoustic performs live at the inaugural “Ladies Night”

The 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival 3rd – 12th January 2014

Featuring prominent trainers, breeders, jockeys and bloodstock agents this is a chance for anyone interested in getting into the industry to come on site and ask questions from experts in the field. Jeep Magic Millions Barrier Draw - Tuesday 7 January 2014 (6:00am) Surfers Paradise Foreshore (opposite Trickett Street) The 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Barrier Draw will take place on Surfers Paradise foreshore. Each runner in the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic field will have a representative present and the representative will choose the barrier from which their horse will start. This year will also see a host of additional family friendly activities available free to the public including sausage sizzle and the spectacle of two Magic Millions horses, plus a live broadcast from local radio station. Magic Millions Sales (Day One) - Wednesday 8 January 2014 (11am) Magic Millions Sales Complex, 28 Ascot Court, Bundall The first horse sale of the Carnival! Magic Millions has achieved a world class reputation with the consistent supply of champions not only to Australasian racing, but to the racing world, with thoroughbreds. 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Raceday - Saturday 11 January 2014 Gold Coast Turf Club, Racecourse Drive, Bundall The Jeep Magic Millions Raceday features the richest race in Queensland, the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The Jeep Magic Millions is the largest sales incentive Raceday in the world, where only graduates of the Magic Millions Sales are eligible to compete for the $4.7 million prize pool. The Magic Millions Sales and Raceday have both established a reputation on the international racing scene as the “must be there” event worldwide for buyers, punters and fashionistas.

While the rest of the nation prepares for the New Year, organisers at Magic Millions are gearing up for Queensland’s biggest racing event of the year, the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival. This year’s Carnival, staged from 3 January to 12 January is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The Carnival and Raceday attract the who’s who to the Gold Coast – from the celebrity scene through to the top buyers arriving in town to part with serious money in pursuit of securing the top racehorses on offer. Visitors to Magic Millions can enjoy wonderful racing events - Barrier Draw, R.M. Williams Launch Party and Raceday to name a few. Beyond the trackside excitement and the high calibre of events on offer, Magic Millions has become a star spotting occasion, with high-profile and international ambassadors including Gai Waterhouse, Jesinta Campbell, Samantha Harris, John Singleton and Quade Cooper, again only naming a few. This year, Queensland beauty and international model Amanda Ware has been announced as the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival Local Ambassador and will attend the annual week-long Carnival. Hailing from the Gold Coast’s Mermaid Beach, the 2010 Australia’s Next Top Model winner is the ‘face’ for the 2014 and 2015 Magic Millions advertising campaign. It’s no surprise Amanda’s favourite part of the day is the Myer Fashions on the Field, claiming to love the original, timeless and classic outfits displayed in the competition. “I’ve been so excited to be a local ambassador the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival and be so closely involved with the advertising campaign. Fashion is definitely my favourite part of horseracing in Australia; Myer Fashions on the Field never disappoints and I hear online registrations for the Magic Millions competition are growing each day,” said Ms Ware. Co-owner of Magic Millions, Katie Page-Harvey said the theme for 2014 and 2015 is ‘more’. “We felt this was very appropriate as people don’t always realise that the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival is more than a race day – it is a thoroughbred yearling sale and an entire week long series of events bringing people to the Coast every day.”

Surfers Paradise Tavern New Year’s Eve, Urban Sounds and more

BORN IN BONDI, BRED IN SURFERS

In 1925, the renowned hotel entrepreneur James (Jim) Cavill arrived and created the legendary Surfers Paradise Hotel. Over the decades it has evolved into one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic venues and 88 years on, the Surfers Paradise Tavern is still home to the locals and visitors, and is the heart of Surfers. It’s the last remaining authentic rock venue in Surfers Paradise. It boasts the famous Beergarden, home to some of the best live music on the GC and keeps with its core values of where music meets the sea. Whether you’re unwinding from a day’s work, heading out on the town, eager for great live music, keen to shoot some pool or for relaxing on a Sunday arvo on the balcony, the Beergarden is the place to be. New Year’s Eve Glow Party The biggest venue in Surfers Paradise will host a News Year’s Eve Party to remember. Popular GC band, Venus Envy will feature as the night’s live entertainment, and with DJ’s until 5am, will have you dancing, singing and rocking out on this night of celebration. Prizes are a Double Pass to Big Day Out 2014, a $500 JB HI FI Voucher, a $500 BCF Voucher, a $500 Flight Centre Voucher and a $500 Dan Murphy’s Voucher. HERE IS AN IDEA!

We came across this on Facebook and thought it was such a great idea that we’d run with it and promote some of our locals who working on their very own small business, which we hope grow to be big businesses. “Let’s buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people. For example, from your neighbour who sells online, a local craftsperson, an up and coming musician, or local Mum-n’-Pop shops. Let’s make sure our money goes to individual people and not multinational companies. This way, more local people will have a better Christmas. Support Local!”

Purely Yours Home & Skin Care Products Rhana Whitworth began making her own products after years of suffering, and seeing others suffer, from eczema, dermatitis, skin irritations, etc. When looking at products most of us use on a daily basis, she was shocked to see that one of the most common ingredients in commercial body/home care products (SLS) is used as industrial degreaser and a lot of ingredients are not only known skin irritants but considered carcinogenic as well. Natural products were Rhana’s remedy and Purely Yours was created. Most of Purely Yours products can be customised to suit individual needs and contain natural ingredients. Products include Face Care, Body Care, Bath Stuff, Hair Care, Home Care, Medicine Cabinet, Pet Care and even Pregnancy/Baby Care. Rhana carefully makes every product herself, and with no ‘fancy’ packaging, Purely Yours products are very affordable. More magic for the Gold Coast MYSTIQUE to open January 1 – 31

Acclaimed Australian illusionist Michael Boyd brings Mystique and some of the world’s best illusions to Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast. Following his hugely successful Cabaret De Paris at Jupiters Theatre, and off the back of standing ovations in Australia’s Got Talent, he will open the famed live magic extravaganza Mystique at Sea World Resort’s Ocean Theatre on January 1, though to 31. Featuring some of the world’s most impressive illusions (designed and built by the same team that work alongside the famous David Copperfield) as well as jaw-dropped escapes, levitations, transformations, special effect and mind blowing disappearances, Boyd’s incredible production will surprise and delight. “Audiences will be left in utter disbelief as they see things which they believe to be impossible yet are happening right in front of their eyes. The show will make people question their sense of reality and what is and isn’t possible,” says Michael Boyd. “It’s a perfect show for this exciting new theatre and will appeal to families on holidays from all over the country, as well as Gold Coast residents who are so known for supporting live theatre and events,” he said. “Mystique promises to be THE show of January!” Mystique first premiered in 2009 in Melbourne Crown Casino and since then it has played to more than 100,000 people each year, with new acts and extravagance being added each season by Boyd. “Mystique is absolutely full of the world’s best magic and awe, it’s brimming with wow and we can’t wait to open!”

Swingin Safari – Tapas | Bar | Dining | Music “Welcome to one of the coolest, kitchest kitchens in town, where the ambience is fun and mood is full of love...”

Swingin Safari is a licensed restaurant with a unique difference, actually many unique differences, and The Bizz GC would like to acknowledge its place in the Gold Coast community by featuring this iconic establishment and the fact that it is so much more than a restaurant – it’s a cultural hub. Rich in history Swingin Safari was built as an original Gold Coast beach house in the 1970’s and longtime locals will no doubt have dined there when it was the The Crab Cooker in the late 90’s/early naughties. In 2003 the house opened its doors as Swingin Safari with local personality and visionary Neil Beattie at the helm. Neil’s background was in pubs and clubs and he had a vision of a community-minded business model that was able to offer affordable and quality dining, as well as making the house a resource to help develop the local arts scene. “It’s a cultural space now” says Mr Beattie, “there’s a need for an alternative model to the nightclubs that can facilitate our emerging cultural growth. It’s not about bigger venues it’s about the small boutique venues to cater for pockets of creativity.” The Tapas style menu offers something for everyone and sharing a platter of International Street Food with friends has become a favourite past-time for many Gold Coast locals. The after-dinner entertainment gave the likes of Tijuana Cartel and The Hanlon Brothers their start, and Theatre nights, Dance nights, Art displays and more enable this restaurant to be treated as a cultural hub for locals to come and utilise it as a place to develop their craft. Despite two long years of having the street closed to foot traffic and passers-by due to the building of the Light Rail, Swingin Safari this year is celebrating its 10th Anniversary and has proven its foundation on the Gold Coast, and loyalty from our residents who return week after week to enjoy a meal and stay on to witness and be part of a number of cultural activities on offer. We have been made aware that the owners of the property are eager to sell Swingin Safari and are alarmed at the possibility of new owners developing the site and closing down this amazing piece of Gold Coast history and establishment where locals can dine and take part in the arts in a socially friendly and enriching manner. Development is important to our city but so is our cultural history. We’d like to start a community discussion where like-minded Gold Coast businesses and people can come together and talk about how we can band together to save Swingin Safari. Maybe we can pool our resources and buy it ourselves!? Expressions of interest, letters of support and all ideas are welcome at saveswinginsafari@thebizzgc.com.au We’ve filled this page with information and reasons to visit Swingin Safari though there is so much more. Visit www.swinginsafari.com to learn more, see their seasonally-changing menu and keep updated on their events and like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ swingin-safari If you’re still deciding what to do this New Year’s Eve, Swingin Safari has everything covered from food to entertainment, featuring a great local original band, The Rectifiers, who will have you dancing the night away with their Rockabilly Rhythm & Blues. And Tijuana Cartel return from the States to perform over two nights on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd December so we recommend getting your tickets now to avoid disappointment when the shows are sold out. Swingin Safari: 2945 Surfers Paradise Blvd (Cnr Thornton St), Surfers Paradise Ph. 07 5538 3762

From 3pm. What’s it all about? An approach to revive the simplicity and grace of the dinner dance era of the 1960’s, Swingin Safari has established itself as a local cultural hub as its point of difference. What was supposed to be a three month experiment to test an idea in 2003 is still in 2013 supplying DJ’s, VJ’s and some of the smoothest musicians and bands in the country, as well as the primary business of being a licenced restaurant that offers tapas of a-la-carte dining for weddings-parties-anything blended with table tennis, free wi fi, coffee, cocktails, dressups, board games, dance the Tango or groove to class old school funk/soul/rock ‘n’ roll or live music all with the twist of the weird and the wonderful.

Culture Tapas – Bar – Dining - Music Expect something totally different, charismatic, ‘grown up’; a feel that’s just on the stylish side of bohemian, a retro eclectic antithesis of the minimalist modern look. Set in an original Queensland Beach house it offers 7 different themed rooms or areas for private parties, dinners, corporate functions and fun! A hub for creativity, open to experimentation with all soft of cultural pursuits. Operations Dress Code: After 6pm – Smart Casual, no thongs or boardshorts Hours: Every day 4pm to Midnight. *Some Mondays are closed *Closed Christmas Day Available every day and night for workshops, seminars, special occasions, fashion parades, on location movie and photographic shoots and whatever your heart desires – don’t be afraid to ask!! www.thebizzgc.com.au

Ringmaster ‘Z’, the eccentric maestro of the bizarre, will lead audiences through the weird and wonderful world of Zircus as theatre-goers experience an impressive line-up of world class acts. The Risley Brothers will bring to the stage their flare for Icarian Games, one of the oldest and most challenging circus tricks whereby one artist is juggled on the feet of another. The eighth generation circus stars have performed in prominent stage shows in the US as well as the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Water for Elephants’. Widely regarded as the ‘World’s Greatest Hula Hoop Artist’, LA’s Mathew Pendl is not only famous for his jaw-dropping skills but for his unique take on the art, combining dance, mime and comedy. His successful career has seen him star in live theatre, stage shows, TV and film. Other international acts featured in the production include the edge-of-your-seat stunts of swinging trapeze artist Nick Rothlisberger, Romanian acrobatic Adagio trio, the X-treme Brothers and incredible Las Vegas contortionist Jordan McNight. Jupiters Hotel & Casino Managing Director Aaron Gomes said the non-stop thrill and action of Zircus and the excitement of international acts which Australia has never seen before makes for perfect holiday entertainment. “The festive season is all about fun and excitement and Zircus promises to deliver just that, giving people of all ages the chance to just sit back, relax and simply be wowed by the incredible skill of world-renowned performers.” Producer Sue Porrett said Zircus is a quirky yet extravagant production. “Zircus is adrenaline-pumping entertainment bursting with energy for the entire 90 minutes. CHRISTINE ANU During an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, Christine has amassed a multitude of achievements spanning across music, theatre, dance, film, television and children’s entertainment. A multi-ARIA nominee and recipient, Christine has had platinum albums, a Green Room Award for Best Actress in a Musical, won song of the year (for My Island Home) and is an eight-time Deadly Award recipient. She’s had success after success in the entertainment arena and will be gracing us with her presence here on the Gold Coast on Friday 7th March at RSL Club Southport. The Bizz GC got to speak with Christine about her career and life in the Australian entertainment industry. After finishing a course in dance Christine came to know a gentleman by the name of Neil Murray who is an Australian musician and writer, and was a founding member of the Warumpi Band which was the first major Aboriginal rock group in the early 80’s and influential Aboriginal rock band. “My life was sheltered until I left home” Christine tells us, “and all of a sudden I learned about all sorts of bands in the indigenous side. Neil saw me singing and said, ‘Wow what a voice’, and asked me to come and do some backing vocals.” She laughs as she explains, “For me, all my singing was totally culturally based – open air, no amps and singing at the top of my freakin’ lungs! I thought if I’m going to learn the ropes then Neil seems like the right fellow to talk with. So my first gig was pubrock gig. I didn’t tell my school because I don’t think we were allowed extra-curricular activity. It was in Sylvania Waters in Sydney and Neil slipped me $50, and that was like a million bucks!” she proclaims. “It was a great opportunity for me to sing and learn, and get my friends in for free and shout them with the $50” she laughed. That gig led to a lifetime in the industry for Christine Anu who ended up signing with Mushroom Records. “In those days there weren’t any development programs; I was on the dole and scarily putting together a demo album, or pre-recording of styling which was my first album, and had a $6,000 grant. $6,000 was like two million at that time” she laughs. “I was living in women’s housing and went travelling around doing gigs; we went all the way to Torres Strait with this little DAT (digital audio tape) and recording things like rain hitting the dingy that were rippled reflections of a concentrated sound picture of how I grew up” she told us. With hits including My Island Home and Sunshine on a Rainy Day, Christine Anu

cemented herself as a leading Australian musician. “So I went to Mushroom and before I knew it 10 years had passed!” Outside the industry, listeners/viewers are unaware of the ‘real’ life of our entertainers, and how a decade of dedication and hard work can end at any time. Christine tells us, “Management wound up, and we were tied up with Mushroom so that wound up. I found myself a solo trader after that point. I had to beg, steal and borrow, whatever I could – the story of every muso in the country” she says. “I was getting my exposure through the record company and since then it’s been echoes of years gone by. It doesn’t mean you don’t exist if you don’t have the big machines of the record companies; it’s just functioning in the real world like most muso’s do when earning their way for bread and butter. I would say to kids that it’s not very dignified sometimes. You ask why am I crying, why does it hurt so much – because it’s all I have, nothing to fall back on.” For the ups and downs of the industry, Christine focuses on the ups and continues on the path that gives her so much joy, “21 years later I still love it! I have the most awesome job in the world and am just fixated on a crowd clapping” We asked about signing with a new label and she says, “I’ve knocked on many doors, God knows, but no. I’d love to have a record deal though it’s so fast with the product coming through at the moment; new and exciting acts, and Jessica is filling that role in a very successful way” she proudly states. “It’s like the passing of the baton though there’s no traditional ceremony for that” she jests. “I may not be signed but I’ve still got my voice!” Starring in Bloody Mary in Opera Australia’s production of South Pacific Christine happily explains, “I’m playing a wonderful role alongside the likes of Lisa McCune and Teddy Rhodes. I’m still doing my thing, dappling in musical theatre and television. And my kids are growing up now,” she laughs “I used to put them in my back pack and take them with me, but now one is graduating I can’t do that any-more!” REWIND – The Aretha Franklin Songbook will give Gold Coaster’s the opportunity to experience the incredible vocals and talents of Christine Anu and on the show she says, “This is a set-list honouring one of my idols in life. I freakin’ LOVE her!” she exclaims. The songs are already hits and allow the songstress to show the versatility in her range and talent, “This is an opportunity for me to translate such wonderful songs and hopefully not wreck them in the audience’ eyes” she jokes. “Aretha is so intimidating and I do the show with so much respect. I just want to put my stamp on them, and it can be so nice to hear someone else’s voice in a song that’s

a classic. She sings in the heavens and I love the challenge of how I’m going to get there. You know it’s not even technical prowess, it’s the raw emotion in these songs that Aretha got.” REWIND will also feature Christine’s own songs and she explains, “I’m always surprised that people won’t let me come off stage without singing My Island Home.” Performing on the Gold Coast she says, “I’m a Queensland gal and I’ll always love coming to Queensland. I hope they pick up the gig guides and see I’m playing, and come along to the show.” With sell-out shows and multiple performances at venues across Australia, REWIND continues to be a show that receives rave reviews from audiences and critics, and in this must-see performance Christine conjures soulful interpretations of Aretha’s most memorable songs including the signature tunes Respect and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, as well as Chain of Fools and many other legendary classics like Today I Sing the Blues. The show itself has been described by critics as an event that ‘captures and celebrates the high standard of live Australian music and artists today’ and Christine’s performance as ‘elegant, powerful and seductive’. Performing for one night only at RSL Club Southport on Friday 7th March, tickets are on sale now and will no doubt sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased at www. southportrsl.com.au or by calling 5552 4200.

Teale Jakubenko Since the launch of Teale Jakubenko’s EP, “Good Times Start Right Now” on 10th August 2013, he has travelled and played an array of random venues from Melbourne to Townsville and back to homeground here on the Gold Coast, on the promotional tour. Having been fortunate enough to be at his launch at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, I was eager to speak with Teale again about the tour and his next steps. It is my personal view (and I believe I have an exceptional ‘ear’ when it comes to music and talent) that Teale Jakubenko is the most promising artist of the moment – locally, nationally and even internationally, and strongly recommend you give “Good Times Start Right Now” a listen. With a music style that Teale aptly labels ‘SPOCK’ (a mix of Soul, Pop and Rock), he fits into almost all genres and has an honest sound and feel that is also commercially viable.

Page 24

www.thebizzgc.com.au

Teale Jakubenko has been gigging in Australia and overseas since he was only 15 years of age, and has played alongside globally recognised bands including Good Charlotte, Evermore and Thirsty Merc. When I last spoke with Teale about his EP launch he said, “I think you’re on a winner with a song that sounds good acoustic. If you have people engaged with a live acoustic song, when you add the whole band or listen to the produced recording, it just takes it to another level.” His acoustic set was the first of his songs that I had heard and I was blown away. He was right. I was engaged in the acoustic version and I ‘spock-out’ to the recorded CD. The feature track, “Move On” is a great example of how it’s a much bigger song on the album than at the acoustic launch, yet at the launch I found myself tapping away with my head bopping around like I actually knew the song already.

confidence which is hard to do, and now I have that and the product, I’m so ready. I want that opportunity again because I can go in there and smash it!” One of the hardest industries in the world to break, Teale talks about perseverance and taking it in steps. Like many artists, he believes “a bit of fete will come in” and is waiting for the right opportunity and the right person to come along and say they think they can take him to the next level. “If that happens, I’ll say YEEHAA!” he laughs. At the same time he recognises he has to put in the hard yards and do all he can to attract that right person.

Jakubenko can be a tongue-twister and I had to pose the question of him considering shortening it to Jak. He accepted the question in good humour and told us how his cousin, Josh Jakubenko, who is also in the music industry, only recently took on the music name of Josh Jack. “Not Self-managed and self-funded, me though” he said, “Before people Teale is working the music industry got to know me as a musician they with every conviction and all the just knew me as Teale.” He let slip dedication you would expect from that Teale is actually his middle an artist who knows they have a name and admitted not a lot of product and wants to put it out to people knew that. I did manage to the world. “I’m just so busy!” he get his first name though will keep laughs and more seriously adds, that for another article. “I love it. I just want to play as many gigs as possible and raise Winding up 2013, Teale will awareness on who I am and the be featured on Channel 10’s sound I have. I want people to Morning Show on December 14th have the opportunity of hearing performing a cover of Prince’s the songs and forming their own 1999. “It’s not quite me” he laughs opinions of them and hopefully “but it’s that time of year and it’s a loving them.” The grounded artist song that fits so I understand why goes on to say, “There is a massive they’ve requested it. Of course element of luck in this industry and I’d prefer to do my own song, but I think I’m due for a bit it [laughs]. I’m working on it right now and In saying that, if someone comes getting it to a stage where I can along and wants to help you get enjoy playing it so the viewers to the next level, that’s because can enjoy it.” Finishing the year, you’re doing something right. he will perform at the Brisbane Someone said to me, luck is when International Tennis for NOVA FM opportunity meets preparedness, on 30th December in the courtyard and I’m definitely prepared. I and says, “I’m really excited about can back up any luck with my it!” We can see him perform locally performances and people liking at The Loft on Chevron Island on what I do.” Sunday 15th December where He explains how he got a break he will be headlining for up-andearly in his career in the music comers Sean Emmett and Kiara industry and tells us “I had a taste Rodrigues, “They’re from Sydney of success right away and was and part of Young Talent Time, and signed to an American company they remind me of trying to give it within two years of getting into a go as a youth, so I’m happy to music.” Laughing he says “I listen share the stage with them and help back to those recordings and with advice” he says. It’s a Sunday hope no-one ever discovers them. acoustic session at starts at 4pm. I was terrible compared to now.” “Sometimes when I feel down I Teale will see in the New Year with wonder if that was my opportunity good company and good drinks and I’ve missed it due to being “that are cold”, and promises to so young and unprepared at the make some noise in 2014. “I’m time. But I realise I had to build my getting back in to the studio and

doing more live/raw recordings as opposed the real produced Good Times Start Right Now. I’m also making it a mission to get more in touch with social media and YouTube with originals and some covers. It’s an area I need to tap in to.” He laughs as he tells us, “I only got on Facebook this year!” Working on new songs at the moment he explains, “They’re a bit different again to the EP. I think I’m already evolving as an artist.” Another goal is to team up with other artists,

“I work well with more heads” he says jovially, “so would love to team up with other artists and come up with something that’s a hit!” His number 1 goal though is raising awareness and getting people to listen. “I really just want people to hear my music and make their own decision on whether they like me as a musician and an artist. I’ve been so focused on performing live as that’s what I’m really all about, but I need to work on spreading the word and getting the music out there. You can’t sit around and wait, you’ve got to get out there!” “Good Times Start Right Now” can be found on iTunes and at www.reverbnation.com/ tealejakubenko and you can now find Teale Jakubenko on Facebook at www.facebook. com/tealejakubenko As a music appreciator and someone who comes across a myriad of artists, I personally speak for Teale Jakubenko as an artist worth listening to, so in the words of a famous Aussie music legend, do yourself a favour and get a copy of Good Times Start Right Now!

Netherlands DJ/producer/house star started making waves via bootleg remixes and won the Dancetour DJ comp in 2009, and 2010’s Funkerman remix comp. He quickly scored a spot on Hardwell’s label, Revealed Recordings, and is working a remix of Eample’s “Say Northing” for summer. From mash-ups to high-profile collaborations to tours and residencies in some of the world’s hottest venues, there is plenty going on Dannic’s universe. Whatever he turns his hand to next will be sure to bring his trademark technical excellence and propensity for catchiness to the table. We got to speak with DANNIC who let us know that he was at home in Breda, had just woken up and that it was a “FREEZING” -10 degrees. Of course we had to rub in the fact that it was 6pm here and in the tepid high 20’s. “Oh I’m so excited to be coming to Australia!” As usual, we asked how he got in to the industry of DJ’ing. “It’s a really long story so I’ll try to keep it short” he laughed. “I was always thinking music. I started DJ’ing 10 years ago playing in a local bar. I wasn’t really into house music and was playing everything from Robbie Williams to 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and Hip Hop. Then I heard about Fedde Le Grand who is from the same city as I’m from. I went to a local cd shop and bought some house cd’s and started mixing with them, and really like the sound of it. A new club was opening up and they asked me to play there; I’d never done house music before but thought I’d give it a try. I started playing more and more and then got asked to play a festival in Netherlands.

The Berlin-based techno visionary performs his live extravaganzas across the world – the ex-BPitch boy and Berlin Calling film star paving quite the reputation as a stadium and festival king. Last year came sixth album Guten Tag, via his own label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik, while he was last in Australia in December 2012. One of the godfathers of the scene! http://paulkalkbrenner.net/ video/ Q. When did you realise that’s what you wanted to do? A. It was early 90’s when I realised this is what I want to do and my first record was in the early 90’s. Q. You are quoted as saying there is a difference between popular music and art music, and that you make art music. Tell us about that. A. I really love 100% instrumental albums and tracks. The music does the talking and that is art. Q. How do you know when you have the perfect or right song? Or is there even such a thing? A. I don’t think there is such a thing

Then playing more festivals and I started producing a little bit, but wasn’t very good at the time” (laughs) “It took me two years to come up with something I was happy with. It’s the best feeling in the world when you play your own track and people go nuts for it. That’s what really got me in to the house scene.” We asked about his process in mixing a track and the upbeat DANNIC said, “It starts with a melody that pops in to my head. I’ll be walking down the street and it comes so I try to record it on my iPhone or whatever, then when I get home I listen and go ‘what the hell was I thinking’” (laughs). “Then I work with it and change it and try to get the structure right on the track. But I start with the melody, then drop, and then it all comes together. It’s not one recipe for making a good track though. Sometimes I need to start producing on the road as well as I don’t have much time in the studio lately. I’m more and more getting used to producing on the road and often finish it at home. Sometimes it takes me a few days, sometimes a week – it depends.” DANNIC tells us, “I do everything myself – mixing and mastering. I’ve got hardware and stuff here, a Mac Pro, two monitors, soundcard – nothing special - just me and my ears! I’m more of a DJ who started producing rather than a producer that started DJ’ing.” We asked how he knows when he has the perfect or right song and again he laughs as he explains,

as the perfect song, because as soon as you think you’ve got it, there’s something else you can add. Every song is different and every show is different. I can change around my songs to suit the crowd so that every night is an original night. Q. Who were you influences? A. At the age of 9, I listened to everything. Irish Folk! I loved listening to music of the world and I have melded it into my own style. Q. You’ve accomplished so much already with 6 records and a film, what’s next on your agenda? A. My next big thing is keep gigging and do bigger festivals with more people, as well as conquer the UK and Europe. Q. Do you have a career highlight? A. Last summer middle of Bavaria with 21,000 people. It poured down and no-one left. It was a sold out concert. Q. Do you have a favourite place to tour? A. No particular favourite place. I get

“You never know! That’s where the DJ part comes in. I always test tracks before releasing or delivering to my management. The best way is to play in different crowds – big and small. You instantly know what to change or to leave, what to refresh or put in the garbage bin.” When asked about his ultimate goal we were surprised to hear him proclaim, “I want to be the 2nd best!” “It sounds corny but music is about passion. I love what I do so I want to keep it that way. I don’t want the pressure that comes with being number 1. What I do want is a successful career and to play all the big festivals with a steady career. That is really important to me.” On his musical influences we are told, “Funk music in general! I’m really into old music – Motown, Soul music – that’s what I love. I love groove and bouncy tracks. I think you can hear it in my tracks as well. I think it’s important to keep dance-floor rather than jumpable.” Future Music Festival will be DANNIC’s first time in Australia and when talking about it says, “I’m really really excited about it. Usually I don’t get to see much of the country, but I definitely want to see some of Australia. I also want to see what the Australian crowd is all about. I’ve heard some good stories and want to experience it myself.” You can check out more on DANNIC at www. djdannic.com www.facebook.com/djdannic www. twitter.com/dannicdj and www.soundcloud.com/ djdannic

to fly a lot; it means getting out of my comfort zone and I can’t wait to play to the Australian audience. Maybe that will become my favourite place to tour! Q. Have you performed in Australia before? A. I came to Australia two years ago to Eastern Australia, and did some very small gigs; nothing like what Future Music Festival Hold. I will be performing at all your major cities with Future Music Festival and I’m so looking forward to it. Q. Does your brother Fritz ever tour with you? A. I think he going to Australia in December and doing small gigs with 1,000-2,000 people Q. Do you have any advice for wanna-be DJs? A. Yes, don’t think that three or five years will be enough time to hit it big. 10 or 12 years, it may take 10-20 years but just keep at it. You’ll never know unless you keep at it.

Win!

ZEBRAHEAD Matty Lewis Q&A

The La Habra, CA-based punk inspired rock outfit Zebrahead was formed in the mist of the Orange County punk explosion and since their incarnation they have had highs and lows, sold over 1.5 million albums to date, survived label changes, garnered a Grammy nomination with Motorhead for best metal performance and toured nonstop; fuelled by pure determination and a lot of beer the band is still going strong. Zebrahead is vocalist/rapper Ali Tabatabaee, vocalist/guitarist Matty Lewis, guitarist Greg Bergdorf, bassist Ben Osmundson, and drummer Ed Udhus. Known across the globe for their explosive and amusingly entertaining live show Zebrahead has played The Vans Warped Tour, Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, Download Festival, Southside Festival, Rock AM Ring, Rock AM Park, Summersonic Festival, Punkspring Festival, Groezrock Festival, Pukkelpop Festival, Sonisphere Festival, Hurricane Festival, Greenfield Festival, NovaRock Festival, Area 4 Festival, Highfield Festival, and the list goes on. It all started with the release of the EP Yellow on the indie label Dr. Dream in May 1998, the buzz began and Zebrahead signed to major label Columbia to release their full-length debut, Waste of Mind, which appeared later that same year. Playmate of the Year was issued in mid2000 to rave reviews. Stupid Fat Americans EP followed only in Japan the next year. Then came the 2003 release of Zebrahead's critically acclaimed MFZB. MFZB had the highest testing alternative song for months running with “Rescue Me”. MFZB also went gold in Japan! The band spent the summer of 2006 on the Vans Warped Tour as Broadcast to the World was released overseas that July through SPV/Sony. The album went gold in Japan in just a month's time. In 2008 the band released Phoenix and Absolute Punk warned “listen with caution as your face may melt right off of your head”, in 2009 the band released Panty Raid, hands down one of the most fun and random cover albums to grace

punk music to date. Get ready to Get Nice! Q. Tell us about the writing process for “Call Your Friends”. Do you all get together and jam, or like so many these days, have home studios, record your own things and send them to each other? A. We call it lucky! We do it 2 different ways. I’m one of those kids (loosely haha). I live in Vegas and the rest of band live in OC which is four hours away. I write a bunch of songs and send them to the guys. They get together, the four of them and write and send them around. And then the five of us get together and we write as one. We pick apart the best songs. It’s a cool process because technology is so awesome these days. We record in our own studios and then Zebra studios. We finalise everything and get it done as a band - the five of us.

Q. Your own studio – cool! A. Yeah, we’ve had the studio for a long time.

We recorded “Get Nice” and “Panty Raid” in our studio! We call it the Boiler Room coz it gets hot in summer time. There’s a loft upstairs where I sleep when I’m in town haha. It’s like being in your own house but dirtier. Q How long did this album take to create? A. I never know the answer to this question. I start writing early, and then we get together as band. I say six months from writing to finalising then a month to mix and master. Then there’ll be some song that I wrote 3-4 years ago that we bring in, so it all varies. Q Obviously you love all 14 tracks on the album, but is there that one song that gives you extra goose-bumps? A. Yeah, you know what, I really like Nerdhound…. That’s one of my favourites. You know, I’m just here for the free beer – definitely like to play that. Q It seems like you guys are always touring!

Where do you find time to write new material and record it? A. It’s tough, it really is. Whenever we’re at home that’s what we do. At home when something happens I just start writing. It’s the same with other guys. It’s tough to be away from family. We go to Europe for a month before Soundwave, come home for a few days and then off to do the Soundwave tour. That’s how we make a living and we love playing music. Not a bad job whatsoever. There are worse jobs out there. Q You’ve played almost every major music festival in the world, which one is your favourite? A. Soundwave of course! And I’m not kidding! There’s a tonne of awesome bands playing, it can’t go wrong! Q Soundwave 2014 has an unbelievable lineup this year, are there any acts you’re looking forward to seeing on the tour? A. Living colour! And I’m so excited to be seeing our buddy Jason from Greenday. I’m also glad to be seeing Dave, so I can say Hello Dave it’s me again! How is the meatloaf? (laughing) Editor: sorry guys, we have no idea who he was talking about and he was just so happy with what he was saying we didn’t want to spoil it for him ;-) Q With 10 studio albums, how do you decide which tracks make the set-list for Soundwave? A. It’s really tough. Me personally, I like paying every brand new song that we can.,but you can’t do that because of the singles and kids loving some songs. (laughing) For us we only have one or two good songs – lucky for us. Okay maybe 3. Q Do you have a message for the Brisbane/ SE QLD fans who are coming to see you at Soundwave? A. Brisbane is fucking insane! I think one of our best shows was there and we can’t wait to come back to see you. And oh yeah, bring beer and call your friends!
