Editor’s Letter Hello and thanks for picking up your copy of The Bizz GC! It’s a wrap on Soundwave music festival, and now we start the Gold Coast’s very own Bleach* Festival. We’ve given you the full program for 17 days of fun-filled entertainment and encourage everyone to get along and enjoy the best of arts and culture that our city has to offer. St. Paddy’s Day is here and we’re looking forward to celebrating it in green with our Irish friends. We couldn’t help ourselves and had to include some good old-fashioned Irish jokes. The nation’s first official V8 Supercars Driving Experience has opened up right here on the GC and we got to go driving with the likes of Jamie Whincup and James Courtney. As always, we’ve packed in as many GC events as possible, and this issue has everything from comedy to the Russian Ballet. All our usual guides are inside, reviews, plenty of giveaways and more. Take a breather, enjoy the read, and we trust you’ll find something you want to do. Have fun! Cover Photo: The Bizz Gold Coast

I, FRANKENSTEIN Directed by Stuart Beattie (Tomorrow When The War Began) and shot in Melbourne, I, FRANKENSTEIN is a contemporary fantasy thriller in which the original monster of Victor Frankenstein stands between the human race and an uprising of supernatural creatures determined to overthrow the world. Adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Kevin Grevioux, it picks up from the moment that the classic Mark Shelley novel leaves off: with the death of Victor Frankenstein and the abandonment of his creature to meet its end in the Arctic wilderness. But the creature doesn’t die – nor does it age the way humans do. And so Frankenstein’s creature makes its way back to civilization – to a world that is dominated by an epic power struggle between two clans – the Demons and the Gargoyles. Told over two centuries to the present day – a hyper-modern metropolis with a twisted Gothic underbelly – the war between the clans rages, with the Demons attempting to capture the immortal, bioengineered creature who is a defender of humanity. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy,Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Socratis Otto, Jai Courtney, Caitlin Stasey. V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience

at the Performance Driving Centre

A selection of Australia’s champion V8 Supercar drivers including current Champion Jamie Whincup, Will Davison, James Courtney and Mark Winterbottom converged on the Gold Coast for the official opening of the nation’s first official V8 Supercar driving experience; and along with a host of Gold Coast media we got to join in on the action. The V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience, located at the Performance Driving Centre and owned by Paul Morris, is located just 30 minutes from the heart of the Gold Coast and is the first and only performance driving centre in Australia to be officially endorsed by V8 Supercars. V8 Supercars Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton said the partnership with V8 Supercars will see the purpose-built facility offer a new range of adrenalin-pumping V8 Supercar experiences, in addition to its comprehensive driver training activities and roadsafety programs. “The partnership is centred on providing a high quality V8 Supercar experience and road safety which is a long-standing focus of the V8 Supercar community programs,” Mr Warburton said. “Each year V8 Supercar drivers deliver presentations to hundreds of schools and community groups throughout the country with the aim of sharing the practical skills and know-how which surrounds safe driving on our roads.” “Our official partnership with the V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience means that from today, our fans will experience the thrills of the 2.2 kilometre race track in a replica V8 Supercar under the watchful eye of trained professionals in a controlled environment.” Paul Morris also gave the V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience his endorsement. “I have been involved in driver training and drive experiences for over 25 years. It has always been a dream of mine to bring the V8 Supercars brand and driver training together. With our purpose built facility and the involvement of V8 Supercars, we offer an authentic experience in a safe environment where fans get the opportunity to see what is like to drive, ride and race in a V8 Supercar,” Mr Morris said. “When they leave the V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience, our aim is for them to have learnt something about our sport and about being a safer driver, but also give them a real V8 Supercars experience they will never forget.” V8 Supercars Official Driving Experience, Group General Manager, Scott Jennings said “we offer not just experiences for thrill seekers but also practical training to make our roads safer. Now with the endorsement and partnership with V8 Supercars we can talk to a new audience which is essential for growing and showcasing our experiences to both the local and international markets.” The Experience is home to two genuine V8 Supercars, several V8 Supercar-based production cars, go-karts, a Barina Driver Challenge and features a skid pan; an off-road, four wheel drive training course; and the only mechanical 'TurnTable' in the Southern Hemisphere. To book a Driving Experience at the only official V8 Supercar endorsed driving centre, visit www.v8supercars.com.au or www.DriveRideRace.com.au

Get set to get wet! Get ready to party! From 7 – 23 March 2014, the Bleach* Festival will drench the Gold Coast with a high-energy, action-packed parade of live music, beach concerts, theatre, performing arts, film and family fun. Bleach* Festival is the biggest and most diverse celebration of everything there is to love about the Gold Coast: its famous outdoor culture or surfing and sunshine, its enviable lifestyle, the wealth of creative and talented locals that live there; and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere that has made the Coast such a popular destination for people of all ages. The 2014 Bleach* Festival presents a 17 day, fun-fuelled program which includes 40 individual free events, 10 ticketed concerts and events; hundreds of artists and creative and 36 locations. Now in its third year, Bleach* Festival has grown to become the biggest highlight on the Gold Coast arts and culture calendar. On the following pages we’ve given you the full program, though for more detail and information visit www.bleachfestival.com.au. We urge you to get along and experience this amazing festival, as the Gold Coast shows our nation and beyond how rich we are in the world of arts and culture.

Q&A with Bleach* Festival Director, Louise Bezzina Q. Tell us how the whole Bleach

idea came up and how you went about putting it together? A. Bleach* Festival is an initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, and entity formed by City of Gold Coast to create new events and festivals, foster economic development and drive tourism on the Southern Gold Coast. The team at CSGC felt there really needed to be an event or festival that celebrated the surf and beach culture of the City, particularly around the Quiksilver Pro, and that is how it all started back in 2011. I was asked to direct Bleach*, given my festival background, and it was a perfect opportunity to incorporate arts and cultural elements into the program, as they complement this style of event so well. Q. Are you an artist yourself? A. I studied theatre at uni and have directed and produced several theatre shows, but I would not call myself an artist. I am a creative and a producer and I love working with artists. Q. Do you have any helpful advice for others wanting to team up with Council? A. If you have a great idea, a strategic business plan and budget, and a vision that demonstrates an entrepreneurial flair, you will have a good chance of being supported. I really appreciate the assistance Council has given us as the festival is so important for the city and covers so much of its stunning coastline. It allows us to pay and employ hundreds of talented creatives and amazing artists, and stage so many free events that appeal to a broad demographic.

Reconnect with the Fibro Coast In the era before motels and resorts, a holiday at the Gold and Sunshine coasts usually meant either pitching a tent and camping by the beach or staying in a simple cottage owned by family or friends. Simplicity, informality, individuality and increasingly a design that acknowledged a connection to outdoor living were the hallmarks of these humble places. Despite rapid change to the urban fabric of the Coasts currently taking place, a few of these buildings remain, and hold with them many layers of memory of this holiday history of relaxation and escape. The exhibition features works by artists who holidayed here from the 1920s such as Vida Lahey and Lloyd Rees and then continues with new work by contemporary artists who have been invited to respond to the continuing resonance of these structures within the rapidly changing beachfront environment. Contemporary Artists include: Judy Barrass, Elaine Campaner, Anna Carey, Byron Coathup, Dean Cogle, Kelly Hussey-Smith & Alan Hill, Kymberley McElroy, Bruce Reynolds, Rebecca Ross and Susan Schmidt. “Fibro – asbestos sheeting – was thought to be a perfect material for a beach holiday cottage. Affordability, ease of construction and lightweight material allowed for DIY flair and a certain architectural playfulness and experimentation. The coastline of South East Queensland is the home of some unexpected architectural treasures” – Virginia Rigney – Gold Coast City Gallery Senior Curator This project is supported by The Queensland Government through Arts Queensland through the Regional Gallery Partnership Program and has been developed by Gold Coast City Gallery in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery. Fibro Coast Snowdome by Anna Carey Gold Coast City Gallery hosts Fibro Coast – an exhibition project that presents the cultural, artistic, architectural and design story of the humble fibro beach house of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts from the 1920s to the present. Visit Fibrocoast.net for the full program and Information on exhibition artists, Fibro Coast history and to see photographs of fibro beach houses from then and now.

Jupiters Hotel & Casino’s Managing Director, Aaron Gomes, said the team continues to focus on luring the finest comedians to the venue with demand so high for another instalment of Laugh Your Pants Off following last year’s sell-out shows. “Our Laugh Your Pants Off series is going from strength to strength and this time we’re upping the ante, not only bringing some of Australia’s favourite jokers to the Gold Coast, but some of comedy’s hottest international stars too,” he said. “Once again we’re excited to be offering both locals and tourists the chance to witness a stellar line-up of comedy masters in action, in what promises to be a night of pure entertainment and non-stop laughs.” For more than two decades, the Umbilical Brothers have left audiences worldwide in awe of their animated brilliance as they twist theatrical rules and everyday situations into comic genius. With sold-out shows across the globe, multi-platinum awardwinning DVDs, appearances on hit TV shows including a performance on Jay Leno alongside Robin Williams, the “Umbies” have earned themselves a reputation as one Australia’s greatest comedic exports. Comedian, actor and writer, Eddie Ifft, has headlined sold-out

shows in 15 countries, released successful CDs and DVDs, is the star of one of the highest-rating and most talked about comedy podcasts and has performed with comic heavyweights Dave Chapelle, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock. Ifft’s quick wit has also reached Australian shores, having appeared on a number of our hit TV shows including Rove, Thank God You’re Here, The Footy Show and Good News Week. At just 27, Scottish young gun, Kevin Bridges’ ride to the top has been a whirlwind. He quickly shot to comic stardom after selling out his run at the Edinburgh Festival in just one day, outselling Billy Connelly in his debut DVD and smashing box office records for opening day ticket sales for his 2012 tour. Award-winning funnyman Jeff Green is no stranger to the international comedy circuit or the silver screen with regular appearances on both British and Australian TV. As well as boasting an extensive festival and touring stand-up repertoire, Green has performed for scores of high profile corporate clients and is on high demand in the UK, Europe and Asia. The Kransky Sisters’ disturbing yet endearing homespun versions of popular tunes and darkly funny tales of rural Australia, have earned the eccentric trio an impressive string of accolades. Featuring anything from the tuba and tambourines to a kitchen pot and toilet brush, this off-beat musical act has proven a favourite on the festival circuit. Tickets to Laugh Your Pants Off are $55 with dinner and show packages from $65, and go on sale 9am Friday February 21 through Ticketek at ticketek. com.au or on 132 849.

Irish Jokes Paddy & Murphy Get the Day Off

Paddy & Murphy are working on a building site. Paddy says to Murphy 'I’m gonna have the day off, I'm gonna pretend I'm mad!' He climbs up the rafters , hangs upside down & shouts 'I'M A LIGHTBULB! I'M A LIGHTBULB!' Murphy watches in amazement! The Foreman shouts 'Paddy you're mad, go home.' So he leaves the site. Murphy starts packing his kit up to leave as well. 'Where the hell are you going?' asks the Foreman. 'I cant work in the fookin dark! ' says Murphy.

Flight 101

Aer Lingus Flight 101 was flying from Heathrow to Dublin one night, with Paddy the Pilot, and Shamus the co-pilot. As they approached Dublin airport, they looked out the front window. "B'jeesus," said Paddy "Will ye look at how fookin short dat runway is." "You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Shamus. "Dis is gonna be one a' de trickiest landings you're ever gonna see," said Paddy. "You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy." replied Shamus. "Right Shamus. When I give de signal, you put de engines in reverse" said Paddy. "Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus. "And den ye put de flaps down straight away" said Paddy. "Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus. "And den ye stamp on dem brakes as hard as ye can" said Paddy. "Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus. "And den ye pray to de Mother Mary with all a' your soul" said Paddy. "I be doing dat already" replied Shamus. So they approached the runway with Paddy and Shamus full of nerves and sweaty palms. As soon as the wheels hit the ground, Shamus put the engines in reverse, put the flaps down, stamped on the brakes and prayed to Mother Mary with all of his soul. Amidst roaring engines, squealing of tyres and lots of smoke, the plane screeched to a halt centimetres from the end of the runway, much to the relief of Paddy and Shamus and everyone on board. As they sat in the cockpit regaining their composure, Paddy looked out the front window and said to Shamus "Dat has gotta be de shortest fookin runway I have EVER seen in me whole life". Shamus looked out the side window and replied "Yeah Paddy, but look how fookin wide it is".

Irish Priest

An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?" "Just water," says the priest. The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?" The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!"

St Patrick’s Day is perhaps the oddest international holiday for us Aussie’s to adopt; steeped in history, St Pat was commonly recognised of the patron saint of Ireland, and his day is said to mark the arrival of Christianity to the country. Hardly fitting for an Australian celebration, but nevertheless, a holiday built for green beer, Kiss Me I’m Irish t-shirts, and a whole lot of fun and games was always going to catch the attention of Aussies, and most of us now celebrate the day every year. So this week, take a tour of Surfers Paradise, and check out the amazing Irish Pubs and Taverns on offer. Take your pick this St Patrick’s Day, or build a pub crawl from the selection. And in the months to come, if you’re ever feeling like a bit of a change, visit these classic venues and experience the genuine hospitality and Irish pub has to offer.

Waxy’s

Waxy’s Irish Pub exudes the lucky Irish charm you’d expect, and is a popular place for locals and tourists alike. With its stylish timber decor and two levels of entertainment, Waxy’s boasts a variety of function spaces and is the Gold Coast’s go-to venue for lunch, dinner, drinks or celebrations. This St Patrick’s Day, experience Irish music, fare and Irish dancers, and immerse yourself in the culture. 3206 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise

Lansdowne Road Irish Tavern

This St Patrick’s Day, walk off the beaten track and head into this quaint Irish Tavern, tucked away in the Chevron Renaissance Precinct. With weekly promotions, and both Modern Australian and Traditional Irish Fare, the restaurant boasts hearty meals at reasonable prices, and with a deep timber décor, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled right into Dublin. Chevron Renaissance, access via Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise

O’Malleys

Overlooking the iconic Surfers Paradise Beach, and with balconies to boot, this Irish Tavern is one of Surfers Paradise’s premier Irish Pubs, a nightlife hotspot where you can find great music in a welcoming atmosphere. A great destination for groups and parties, and with outdoor service and seating overlooking the beach, O’Malleys is the perfect afternoon party hangout. Level 1, 1 Cavill Ave, Surfers Paradise

Kitty O’Sheas

Local watering hole Kitty O’Sheas is as inviting as the name sounds. With a warm fireplace during winter, cobbled stone floors and an impressive Irish feel bar, the luck and life of the Irish oozes from every corner. With great meals every day and live music on weekends, there’s plenty to see any day of the week. 301/8 Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Fiddlers Green

Steeped in local history, the old Bavarian Hause building is now home to one of the largest Irish Pubs on the Gold Coast. Fiddlers Green has a great Sunday session available, and amazing lunch and dinner specials throughout the week and on weekend. Even the staff are Irish, making this a truly authentic Irish experience. Try the Irish fare and you’ll feel like you’re in the cool of Ireland. 39 Cavill Ave, Surfers Paradise

D’Arcy Arms

D’Arcy Arms, at the southern end of Surfers Paradise, combines good old fashioned service, a keen eye for Irish hospitality and an expansive lunch and dinner menu to create a homely and traditional Irish Restaurant and Bar. The team are more than happy to help you celebrate your special occasion, hosting functions and events year round. 2923 Gold Coast Highway, Surfers Paradise See more at: http://nights.surfersparadise.com/barspubs/time-toget-ready-for-st-patrick#sthash.hMQ0Ah5B.dpuf

It isn’t easy being green… except on St Pat’s Day at the Currumbin RSL! When you’re trying to raise a young family and your extended family lives on the other side of the world, life’s daily challenges can seem that little bit more difficult. Although 34 year old Irish woman, Tracy Hatten, says she loves living on the Gold Coast and would never move back to her homeland, she still very much misses her family, friends and Irish background. “All my family still live in Ireland, and it’s the little things such as the time difference and distance that makes staying in contact really difficult,” says Tracy. “I’m very proud of my heritage. Irish people are fun, easy to get along with and don’t mind a drink,” she laughs. So when St Patrick’s comes around every year, Tracy pulls out all stops to celebrate. “I love St Pat’s Day. I dress the kids up from head to toe in green and we celebrate for two days,” she says. Tracy’s annual St Pat’s ritual begins with enjoying the celebrations and parade in Brisbane, then she heads back to the Currumbin RSL to continue the festivities. The RSL has also pulled out all stops on Sunday March 16 and 17 to ensure Saint Patrick's Day,

also known as the Feast of Saint Patrick, will be exactly that! All of the club’s food outlets will be brimming with Irish cuisine, including Guinness and beef pies and lucky four-leaf clover cupcakes at La Vista Café, and Irish stew with soda bread, corned beef with colcannon, and Irish cream cheesecake at Alleys Restaurant. It wouldn’t be St Patrick’s Day without a drink! The club is offering a tasting flight of three Jameson Irish Whiskies (regular, 12 year old and Reserve Gold) and discounted imported Guinness cans to enjoy. To ensure patrons have the opportunity to dance a jig, Johnny Jump Up plans to keep the club’s atmosphere lively and entertaining on Sunday March 16 by performing contemporary Irish music, as well as an arrangement of traditional songs for those who like to reminisce! One patron could find themselves having some Irish luck, with the winner of the $16,000 Volkswagen car announced on Sunday at 2pm. If the lucky patron doesn’t need a new car, they can choose to walk away with the pot of gold a cool $10,000 cash!

Traditional Irish Charm in the heart of Surfers Paradise at Waxy’s Waxy’s Irish Pub is located in the heart of Surfers Paradise, and has a friendly ambience enveloped in an Irish décor. Relax with a Guinness at the bar, enjoy a genuine Irish dining experience and settle yourself in for daily entertainment, gaming or function facilities that are sure to cater for all. St Patricks Weekend Day will be celebrated at Waxy’s with everything you would expect and more – Irish Bands, Irish Dancing, Green Beer and cocktails, Irish Coffee and the friendly, fun atmosphere that is synonymous with Waxy’s Irish Pub. From Waxy’s blog on 24 February 2014: Luck of the Irish – Fridays at Waxy’s Have you ever wondered what the phrase ‘Luck o’ the Irish’ refers to? Simply put, it’s about business cards, and it’s about Fridays. According to Celtic lore, Friday is the day of fortune, dating back to the great quarrel of the Pig Keepers, Ochall and Bodb. Ochall was the greatest Pig Keeper in all the land, to the humiliation of Bodb, was the underdog Pig Keeper, and was losing pigs to keep every day. But by cracky, all of this changed one fateful Friday… okay, so the exact origins of the story are a little murky – but Fridays are a lucky day nonetheless! You too can get extremely lucky, just by dropping your business card into the Waxy’s business card draw every Friday night. If your four-leaf clover is looking out for you, you might just find yourself with a nice $100 food and beverage voucher to enjoy. And with St. Patrick’s Day in view – why wouldn’t your stars be aligned?! So go on, flick that business card into the draw, there’s plenty of luck at Waxy’s for everyone!

Festivities 16- 17 March

DON QUIXOTE

Imperial Russian Ballet Company

The Fault In Our Stars John Green Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now. Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault. Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind. Well, despite the grim topic, this is a celebration of life, warts and all. It’s funny and yes it’s also sad but I found it uplifting. It deals with a teenager with cancer just trying to live as normal a life as possible but at a higher level of emotional awareness. She is still just a girl, looking for a boy, wanting to go on dates, but limited in her choices. It’s also a reality check for those of us lucky enough to lead a life that doesn’t include a serious illness or medical condition of any kind. Read this book and then celebrate your own unique life. I enjoyed this book immensely, it's a must read. Currently there is a movie in production due for release mid 2014. See trailer at address below: http://youtu.be/b88jNASluY8

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company will bring this flamboyant and festive ballet to the Gold Coast in April 2014. Don Quixote, a retired gentleman travels the roads of Spain searching for glory and grand adventure. Accompanying him is a somewhat bewildered labourer named Sancho Panza who he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. In return, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an Island. Don Quixote gives up food, shelter and comfort all in the name of a peasant woman Dulcinea del Toboso who he envisions as a princess. Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then it has been performed all over the world by Russian and international ballet companies. The Imperial Russian Ballet Company was formed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist, Gediminas Taranda. They have staged classic masterpieces in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Mossovet Theatre. The home venue for the troupe when they perform in Moscow is now the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre. “Ballet Virtuosity stuns audience” "An astounding and exhilarating three-hour programme brought most ballet fans to their feet last night. Perhaps the few who remained seated were simply stunned by excess, as this touring ballet treasure trove heaped pleasure upon delight, capping virtuosity with even more outstanding steps, leaps and turns. This was a superlative exhibition from the principals and corps of a highly accomplished company that managed to balance formidable athleticism with traditional grace and comportment” Richard May, The Evening Standard www.russianballet.com.au Date: Friday 11 April and Saturday 12 April Venue: Arts Theatre Time: 8.00pm performance time, 7.30pm doors open, 7.00pm Arts Bar opens. www.hushhushbiz.com CINEMA RELEASE: WINTER’S TALE

Release date: 13th February 2014 Director: Akiva Goldsman Cast: Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Jessica Brown Findlay, William Hurt, Will Smith Classification: M (Violence and Sex Scene) Review by Peter Gray In his career as a screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has a rather muddled resume. For every ‘A Time To Kill’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’, there was a ‘Practical Magic’ and, gasp, ‘Batman and Robin’, and given that, in some circumstances, Hollywood can forgive the greatest cinematic crimes, Goldsman has managed to round up an impressive ensemble for his debut feature as a director – ‘Winter’s Tale’. Based on the 1983 novel from Mark Helprin, ‘Winter’s Tale’ is a sweeping romance bathed in the overtones of a fantasy feature, focusing on the eternal love between Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a thief on the run from a demonic Irish gangster (Russell Crowe), and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), the daughter of a wealthy newspaper publisher who also happens to be dying from consumption. This particular aspect of the film, set in 1916, seems like it’ll be relatively straightforward and could possibly veer into Nicholas Sparks territory, but Goldsman – no stranger to mystical elements in his storytelling – keeps things fantastical with an outer-worldly twist. Peter’s love for Beverly only irks Crowe’s malevolent crime boss Pearly Soames more, and when the film time-travels to current day New York, it tries to make the best sense it can as to why both Peter and Pearly are still alive and haven’t aged a day. Beverly sprouting poetic dialogue about seeing things more clearly and the connection with light eventually becomes clearer to the audience as well, though by the time we meet Peter in 2014 it appears like an intentional act on Goldsman’s half to have everyone involved, audience included, be baffled as to why he doesn’t know his own identity.

Page 22

If you’ve been willing to go along with the story for the most part, the depictions of heaven and hell presented here will be where your alliance with the film is tested; Heaven is represented as a place set amongst the stars, the (flying) white horse Peter has been riding is none other than his guardian angel, Will Smith shows up as an oddly attired Lucifer, and by the time proceedings have wrapped up Peter is almost God-like with his divine set of powers. You have to hand it to Goldsman for trying to fuse so many elements together but there’s only so much whimsy one can stomach before it becomes too ridiculous to bare. From a romance point of view ‘Winter’s Tale’ is a minor success as Farrell and Findlay play well off each other, Findlay in particular encapsulates the wide-eyed optimism that comes with new found love, and the support from William Hurt as her father adds a certain respectful weight to proceedings. Jennifer Connelly, most likely owing Goldsman a favour for the accolades she earnt from ‘A Beautiful Mind’, shows up later in the piece with very little to do but thankfully a romance between her and a modern day Farrell isn’t forced, and the surprising appearance of Eva Saint Marie generates that magical feeling the film was no doubt hoping it would achieve on its own merits. As for Crowe, I can only imagine he was happy to earn a cool paycheck for very little in return as he’s wildly over-the-top and practically stuffed from all the scenery he chews. ‘Winter’s Tale’ isn’t a good film by any means, but it’s still incredibly entertaining in that fascinating, carwreck kind of way where you just can’t look away from the cinematic horror that is unfolding in front of you. Though I was hoping to enjoy the film on an organic level, I have to admit I still walked away entertained – even if it was for all the wrong reasons. My rating 2/5 (A disjointed affair)

CINEMA RELEASE: MANDELA LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

Release date: 6th February 2014 Director: Justin Chadwick Cast: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris Classification: M (Mature Themes, Violence and Coarse Language) Review by Peter Gray Making a film that truly encapsulates the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela was always going to be a hard task, and though ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ is a serviceable enough outing, it still falls short of being the revelatory biopic it should be. Based on Mandela’s autobiography ‘Long Walk to Freedom’, Justin Chadwick’s film hopes to create a threedimensional portrait of the man but in attempting to do so a great deal of poignancy is missing, and with a life that is so full of immense moments it wants to include as much as possible yet it somehow plays on fast forward. The early moments of the film paint a youthful Mandela (Idris Elba) as a serial womanizer, cheating on his first wife without so much as batting an eyelid, as well as relatively reluctant to join the ANC (African National Congress) as he seems to enjoy his profession of being a lawyer, even if he has to constantly deal with racist taunts and condescension from the ruling minority. When he meets the young and spirited Winnie Madikizela (Naomie Harris), Mandela’s life took a turn as his passion for righting the wrongs in South Africa, particularly racial segregation, became his focus and what ultimately lead to his 27 years in jail. When the film shifts to his imprisonment ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ shows signs of being a worthy story as the initial scenes of Mandela and Winnie falling in love come off as rather superficial, and more ‘Hallmark’ than heartfelt, and at over 2 hours (and it’s unfortunately a movie where you feel the running time) the lesser time spent on romantic fluff the better.

Whatever the reaction to the story, the one factor that remains undeniable is Elba’s stunning portrayal of Mandela. The actor has always been particularly gifted with accents, and his mannerisms and vocal work here are stunning with the actor effortlessly embodying the figure in both his younger, more physical years (where Mandela dabbled in boxing) and as an older, slightly more fragile man. Though he doesn’t look exactly like Mandela, his performance is good enough to get lost inside. With her role in fighting against segregation, Winnie became a controversial figure in her own right, and Harris appears ready for the task of taking her on. Celebrated by some and demonized by others, Winnie was a divergent figure and the film does a commendable job of balancing her as equally and as honestly as they could. Though she is clearly consumed by hatred more than her husband, Harris’ performance never panders to simplicity and the shift from principled youth to volatile determination is believable. Winnie’s actions are never excused, but you at least get an understanding of where she’s coming from and Harris helps convey that. A film can’t survive on just good performances though and outside of two solid turns, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ treads on a flat surface. Mandela’s story is nothing short of amazing but this film doesn’t come close to truly conveying it, coming across more like a condensed mini-series than a full-fledged feature. There have been better films detailing his life, and I think there is perhaps another great biopic still to be made about the man but as it stands ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ is a better read than it is a visual. My rating 3.5/5 (Elba’s performance worth the travel)

A Sound Argument Is the ‘Agent of Change’ planning principle a ray of hope for QLD live music venues? In the last sitting of Victorian State Parliament in 2013 State Planning Minister Matthew Guy tabled a raft of red tape reforms for the Victorian live music industry. Essentially the reforms are designed to enable all venues to have the ability to host live music and revitalise the local scene which has been under continuing threat from new residents’ complaints about noise. The Napthine government is determined to implement the ‘Agent of Change’ principle to local planning laws essentially removing any right of complaint from new residents against a venue’s noise if the venue was established first. Seems like absolute common sense of course that if you move to an area that is noisier than you expected that the onus is on you to soundproof your own property. At this point the reforms are not yet implemented, but the process has the collective eyes of the national live music audience focussed on its progress as a landmark change which could bring the balance back to once again respect the rights of existing live music venues to responsibly operate their business without frivolous red tape getting in the way. This situation is of course not unique to Victoria and we have seen many instances in Queensland where venues have been held to account for noise complaints from nearby residents. Many of these venues have been in existence for years before any residential development was even in earshot, but the balance of power seems to have tilted toward anyone who simply chooses to pick up the phone and complain. The unfortunate reality of this trend is that noise complaints are rarely validated in any way by officers of the Office of Liquor and Gaming (OLGR) who are entrusted with the responsibility of mediating these disputes. The venue is offered no registered reading of noise levels from the source of the complaint to give it any validity whatsoever yet they face the prospect of penalties as a result. Would you willingly accept the consequences of receiving a speeding fine if a police officer refused to show you the radar reading even though you

believed you were doing no wrong? There are judicial processes in place to ensure your rights are protected in this scenario yet venue operators have just had to take it on the chin when the equivalent scenario threatens their very livelihoods. It is a widely embraced truth now amongst local residents that if you just complain enough times you will get your way regardless of who is right or wrong. Even more alarming is the prospect of venues being labelled serial offenders by the OLGR if numerous complaints are registered against them regardless of whether or not the complaints are justified in the first place. There are countless venues across the Gold Coast region alone, considered one of Australia’s greatest tourism assets, which have been forced to cease live entertainment for fear of costly infringements, had their decibel limits reduced to absurdly low levels, or stripped of their entertainment license altogether on the basis of serial complainants who have bought property in the vicinity of these established venues and taken exception to the noise. The wash up is that the rights of operators to responsibly run their live music venues have been stripped altogether despite the fact that many have been in existence and doing so for years before residential development swamped them. Nobody can deny that the notion of a venue operating ‘responsibly’ needs to have some defining basis. In ALERT’s proposal handed to the QLD State Government last year the development of a ‘Code of Conduct’ was recommended to establish responsible operating guidelines for live music venues. This essentially would give venue operators the ability to self regulate their noise abatement and do away with the costly and logistically crippling regulations that are currently in place. Additionally, with the potential for the ‘Agent of Change’ revolution in the pipeline, Queensland venue operators could have their rights re-instated to once again deliver entertainment to meet the existent present demand for live music currently under considerable threat. The real shame in this debate is that our cultural identity which the majority are

trying to passionately embrace is being ripped from our grasp and squashed like an insidious pest by a minority who are interested in only what affects their own insular world. Take a trip to New Orleans, Barcelona, Montreal, or any other world destination renowned for its nightlife and see how proud these communities are of the vibrant entertainment culture that they have embraced to bring tourists to their doors and put them on the world map. Australian government agencies from federal to local jurisdictions need to wake up and recognise that Australia is running out of fuel to drive a culturally rich tourism identity. If we keep removing artistic avenues of expression for our current generation because of the antiquated views of the aging few, how will we feature in the eyes of the world when we so ambitiously promote ourselves with such rich cultural diversity? Common sense of course looks great on paper but without the live music community and industry stakeholders making a stand to get behind some real change common sense will remain an uncommon reality. Soundwave 2014 Wrap-up! It’s the festival we’ve waited for all year, which tends to set dangerously high expectations. Fortunately expectations were met and were even exceeded! Our only dilemmas were some clashes of great acts we wanted to see, and having to miss a few completely due to the hard task (sarcasm of course) of interviewing the likes of Five Finger Death Punch, ALTER BRIDGE, Jimmy Eat World and Clutch! We’ll feature these interviews in upcoming editions so look out for them. Back to the beginning - enough entry points and staff ensured a smooth transition from the ‘real world’ to ‘Rock-World’, so we were off to a great start. Because we had planned our day meticulously, we had enough time to comfortably get our drink tickets for the day and make our way straight to stage 4 for Five Finger Death Punch who smashed it from the very second they began. It was around their fourth song when we made our first mercy-dash for Stage 2 where Alter Bridge were playing and we had our second dose of amazing music by an amazing act. Wow! Being an outdoor concert, one of the biggest issues is always sound – levels and quality. So far, based on two separate stages, Soundwave 2014 nailed it on both accounts! Mercy-dash #2 came before AB finished. Fortunately we’d seen them before and we weren’t complaining as it was FFDP interview time! What was meant to be only 15 minutes was close to an hour of speaking with Zoltan and Chris, and we couldn’t have been more impressed with the interesting and intelligent conversation with these two rockers who love their art and the industry with a passion. You’ll have to wait for another edition to read it, or you can keep an eye on our website under Festivals/Soundwave 2014! That goes for all the interviews we had on the day. Okay, so we don’t have the room to continue giving you a countby-count explanation of the day so in summary:

Page 24

www.thebizzgc.com.au

Standout Artists Biffy Clyro, Five Finger Death Punch, Alter Bridge, Alice in Chains (William Duvall killed it on vocals! Outstanding!), Rob Zombie (as always), Avenged Sevenfold, oh who am I kidding – they were all standouts! Living End were late-comers to the festival and deserved their place in the line-up - always consistent, they rocked the house with a superb performance that surely had our international guests appreciating Australian talent! Green Day put on a three-hour spectacular that had thousands of punters jumping, cheering and singing for the entire time, and included an incredible lighting show. Even if you don’t own a single Green Day album, you know the words! An Aussie-medley was cool, though one of our reviewers, Rhana, says “He sounds like Kermit when he’s not singing his own songs.” Speaking of Aussie-medleys, we found that most of the international acts put an Aussie song in their set-list, which in our opinion Rocks, and shows a sense of respect for our nation’s musical success. In saying that, almost every Aussie tribute was an AC/DC song! Haha

Sound 14 stages with more than 90 acts and being an outdoor concert, the expectation for quality sound wasn’t high, though we got it! Sure there were a couple hiccups, namely when Rob Zombie started on Stage 3 and we only had the backing tracks and vocals. Rob Zombie, to his credit, handled it with the utmost professionalism citing, “We don’t have any sound but we do have a party so let’s rock!” An adoring crowd let go of any grievances immediately and succumbed to an electrifying Zombie, and within a few songs the guitars kicked in and all was well. The PA’s were all set up perfectly, with the levels being as loud as you would want them at the front and still very audible at the back. The sound was clean and a testament to the sound-guys at each desk. Congratulations Soundwave!

Crowd Congratulations to the festival-goers of Soundwave 2014. Around 40,000 punters filled the RNA Showgrounds and not a spot of trouble the entire day! It was apparent this festival is for the true music appreciator; and far from the stereo-type these days of drunken, ‘roided party-goers there just for the scene. Diverse in age, nationality and musical taste, everyone was there for the same reason – to have a great time rockin’ out to great artists and their music.

Amenities Food stalls everywhere; it was easy to grab something to eat and a bottle of water in between stages and not waste any precious band time. Some of the prices may have been a bit x’y but not too bad. It was hot and fresh and convenient! It seems the days of having to carry folded tissue in a snap-lock bag for protection are over. There were bathroom amenities in many convenient locations and all were fully stocked with paper the whole day! Perhaps fewer people were going to the bathroom, we don’t know, but they were all clean with little or no waiting! Merch, sunglasses, ATM’s, food, bars, free waterstations – everything was thought of and available.

Result: THE BEST FESTIVAL EVER! The countdown for Soundwave 2015 is on!

14 - 20 Mar Sun 16 Mar Cont...

The Gold Coast is home to many musicians from every genre, and as we watch the shift change again to bring back the live music scene to what we knew in the 80’s and early 90’s, there are Open Mic and Jam nights appearing all over the city. From seasoned muso’s to those wanting to get a bit of experience in front of a crowd Open, Mic and Jam nights are a great way to spend an evening for artists and audience alike. More and more venues are taking on the special sessions as musicians network, practice and perform for a music-appreciating audience as they enjoy a relaxing drink and dinner with friends and family. We hope to see this guide grow with every edition and encourage everyone to attend one of these nights!

Courtroom Fashion Recently I was privy to sitting in a Case-conferencing court room and there are many wrong.com topics from this particular morning, though today I’m going to talk about the lawyers or solicitors or whatever they’re called and their apparent lack of style when it comes to dressing professionally. There was a distinct lack of defendants present, yet the courtroom was full of cheap wrinkly suits, scuffed shoes, un-brushed hair and an awful lot of nattering. It was reminiscent of a rowdy school room. The Judge at one point did say, “If I could get some silence in the courtroom we may be able to get something done.” I’m surprised he didn’t send them all home to dress and groom themselves appropriately and return in a more professional manner. Call me old fashioned, though I would think representing people in a courtroom in front of a Judge would call for a ‘professional’ appearance. I mean, at least ‘pretend’ to look the part of a supposed-professional who is charging exorbitant fees for services rendered. It was actually embarrassing! Every female lawyer/solicitor/intern had hair that needed a good brush! How hard is it!? One had a fairly nice suit that was spoiled with a t-shirt that hung over the skirt and out from under the jacket and was FRAYED! For what they’re charging an hour, I’d have thought they could afford a new shirt or 10! Another wore a short bright red cotton/polyester summer day dress that most would wear to a picnic. I was waiting for her to bring out the blanket and start unpacking a basket of chicken sandwiches and cake, but alas I had to wait to leave before getting a spot of lunch… The men in the room – well it seems they had no concept of an iron or a dry-cleaner, as there were more wrinkles on their suits than there is on Keith Richards! There was a black pin-striped suit with brown shoes – wrong.com; and I can’t go past the disco-era throwback who honestly had the shiniest silver pants you have ever seen and a white shirt with the top buttons down. He was parading around and walking in and out – I’m sure he was looking for the mirror ball and the resident DJ, and couldn’t understand why the Judge wasn’t spinning discs up there in his booth. Judge Judy would certainly have none of this in her courtroom, and even though the whole scene was wrong.com I must admit I found it very entertaining.

The Road at the end of Bermuda Street Driving to Tweed Heads with a friend recently, we took the Bermuda Street route to the highway. People who drive the particular stretch of road I’m referring to, will already know what is wrong.com about it. Those who haven’t driven it, I implore you to do so and tell me you didn’t think you had a flat tyre! After crossing the Reedy Creek Road intersection, it’s only a matter of seconds before the rumbling from your shock absorbers that seem to have gone in to some state of convulsion has you looking in to your side mirrors as if you need glasses, trying to see your tyres that you know you can’t see, thinking “Oh No, surely I don’t have a flat tyre”. Common sense tells you it’s just a bad patch of road, but as you travel along the turbulence seems greater and you become convinced you do actually have a flat. Naturally, you put on your indicator and pull over at the safest spot to do so (well most of us do), exit the vehicle and walk around it in seek of this tyre that has flattened and caused so much commotion. Mixed emotions follow. Relief that you don’t have to call RACQ, a friend or pull out the jack and change it yourself; and annoyance that you’re on the side of the road and have just wasted precious minutes that can never be returned. Relief wins as you get back in to the car, buckle up and start the engine. This is when a tad of nervousness sets in, as you wonder if everything is going to be okay as you set off on your path again. Immediately, your fear of not checking your tyres properly when you stopped is realised, and once again you feel as if you’re on the old Wild Wave roller coaster at Sea World, and wondering where on earth you’re going to pull over now that

you’re just about on the M1. As you veer left and ascend the small hill leading on to the highway, you’re almost praying to make it to the emergency lane. Then the ‘wonder’ cement road that never needs maintenance ceases and you’re back on bitumen! Your car has never felt so smooth! Over the years I’ve driven that road many times, and although wise to the road now, still question if maybe I have a flat.
