Meatcart.com.au shares its top tips and secret tricks for a perfect Australia Day BBQ Australia Day is fast approaching and as thousands of Gold Coasters prepare to celebrate the nation’s biggest day, Meatcart.com.au gives its top tips and secret tricks for the perfect Australia Day Barbecue. Boasting over 20 years of industry experience, Meatcart.com.au’s Managing Director Darren Walsh is a barbeque extraordinaire. “There is no better way to celebrate Australian Day than having an outdoor barbeque. Top this off with backyard cricket, a couple of beers on ice, great friends, blue skies and sunshine and you have the ultimate Aussie celebration,” said Darren Walsh He also gives his top tips and secret tricks for a perfect Australia Day Barbeque 1. Choose wisely – there is nothing more Australian than meat on the bone. We strongly recommend a large 500g OP rib complemented by some pork ribs. Also, don’t forget entrée should be a nice kilogram of fresh prawns. 2. Following the trend – Eye fillet, scotch fillet and porterhouse continue to lead in popularity. 3. Plan ahead – Remove your steak from the fridge 20 minutes prior to cooking it. Steak at room temperature cooks faster and absorbs the seasoning better, ensuring a tender not tough texture. 4. Be strategic – Oil the steak rather than the barbeque and a little bit of salt and pepper doesn’t hurt either. 5. Fight temptation – Before sitting down to eat your perfectly grilled piece of meat, wait! By removing the meat from the grill and allowing it to sit and absorb the juices for five minutes, you will ensure your meal is richer with flavour. 6. Avoid multi-tasking – The biggest threat to ruining your perfect Australia Day BBQ is servicing over-cooked meat. To ensure a seamless delivery, make sure you focus on your condiments first. Make the salad, boil the potatoes and cut up the bread before placing the meat on the grill. However, there are times when you can do two things at once – have a cold refreshing beverage in one hand and tongs in the other! 7. Follow the steps – The secret to a perfectly barbequed piece of chicken is to cook it on a lower heat and basting it at the very end, and use your barbeque lid to keep an even heat through. 8. Delegate – The easiest way to achieve a perfectly barbequed piece of fish is to place a foil tray over it to allow the fish to cook in its own steam. 9. The correct order is the key – If you are including sausages in your meal plan, make sure they go on first on low heat. 10. Call on support – Want to cook the perfect eye fillet? Bake in the oven first before finishing on the grill. For more information visit www.meatcart.com.au

“Australia Day” to open Queensland Theatre Company’s Season 2014
with snags on the ‘barbie and a lamington chaser A powerful, rollicking main-stage comedy of bumbling bureaucratic battlers A wickedly funny exploration of authenticity and idealism in the melting pot of modern Australia : 25 January to 16 February 2014 Welcome to the typical little Aussie country town of Coriole, where life is laid-back and carefree – unless you’re a member of the Australia Day committee, who couldn’t raffle a chook in a pub ... this January, grab a lamington and a stubbie, pop on your double pluggers and your Jackie Howe, remember the Aeroguard and settle in for a clever, caustic comedy that promises to put the sizzle in your ‘barbie … or should that be in your wok? A bang-up-to-the-moment barbecue-stopper of a comedy, Australia Day opens Queensland Theatre Company’s Season 2014 and follows a mob of bumbling bureaucratic battlers as they debate the minute details of the national day and identity. Will Coriole’s Australia Day be a little ripper, or go off like a bucket of prawns in the sun? Australia Day is the story of six quirky community leaders in a small country town charged with putting together the ultimate cultural celebration of what it means to be Australian. However the idea of consensus on the national identity is further away than the Southern Cross. Never mind wrangling the Nippers, the Lions and the CWA; these little Vegemites are at loggerheads just deciding the type of bread that’s appropriate to serve at an Aussie BBQ …. or should it be fried rice? Thrown in this laugh-out-loud Thermomix of politics and small town social culture is the fact the affable yet scheming Mayor Brian Harrigan (Bishop) has his eye off the ball, preoccupied by his own bid to win true blue pre-selection for the Liberal Party and his sledging sessions with the local Greens. QTC Artistic Director Wesley Enoch said the rollicking satire, which stars a marquee line-up of talent led by Paul Bishop on stage and Andrea Moor in her Playhouse directorial debut, was one of five Australian productions in the Company's 2014 season. Australia Day tackles the conundrum of the changing face of Australian society with the biting wit and wisdom of our own inimitable Jonathan Biggins. An Australian theatre institution, and the brains behind Sydney Theatre Company’s wickedly satirical institution the Wharf Revue, Biggins has his finger firmly on the pulse of Aussie culture. Well known and lauded Queenslander Paul Bishop leads the cast, and will be quite comfortable in the role of the Mayor – when he’s offstage, he is a Redlands City Councillor on Brisbane’s bayside. He's joined by leading actors Chris Betts, Louise Brehmer, Barbara Lowing, Bryan Probets fresh from the acclaimed Design for Living and Lap Phan. Super talented theatre star Andrea Moor returns from directing the smash hit of the 2013 season, Venus in Fur and shining on stage in Design for Living, to direct this thought-provoking yet wickedly funny exploration of authenticity and idealism in the melting pot of modern Australia.

Australia Day opens a powerful season 2014 for QTC. “There is a very real focus on Australian work in 2014 with 75% of the season Australian plays, and for good reason – Australian stories and storytellers are amongst the very best in the world,” Mr Enoch said. “We will see a tripling of works being commissioned, we have two productions in association with local groups and four co-productions – such an exciting time,” he said. “Season 2014 is one that audiences will thoroughly enjoy – it is laced with humour, emotion, conflict, questions and adventure. It is also a season that nurtures our stars – we are very proud to present four works by female playwrights, and welcome two female directors, with Andrea Moor launching the season directing Australia Day, as well as celebrating a 45% increase in the number of actors this season compared to last.” So: this January, grab a lamington and a stubbie, pop on your double pluggers and your Jackie Howe, remember the Aeroguard and settle in for a clever, caustic comedy that promises to put the sizzle in your ‘barbie … or should that be in your wok?

Chinese New Year Cavill Mall, Surfers Paradise Saturday 1st February 2014 2pm to 5pm
In 1913 it was legal to mail children. With stamps attached to their clothing, children rode trains to their destinations, accompanied by letter carriers. One newspaper reported it cost fifty-three cents for parents to mail their daughter to her grandparents for a family visit.
(Picture courtesy of the Smithsonian Institute.) Apparently mailing was cheaper than a train ticket. As news stories and photos popped up around the country, it didn't take long to get a law on the books making it illegal to send children through the mail. With thanks to Thomas Doty.
Presented by Soul Surfers Paradise The colour and spectacle of Chinese New Year will light up the Gold Coast as the calendar turns to the Year of the Horse and Kookaburra. To celebrate the change, Surfers Paradise will host an incredible array of Chinese cultural displays, amazing Chinese food and the dazzling Dragon and Lion Dances. At this free event, there will be several Chinese themed stalls for you to get involved in the fun. Try your luck in our chopstick challenge and ping pong competition, or experience the art of traditional Chinese paper cutting, Chunlian calligraphy, and lantern making. Plus don’t miss the exciting stage activity with Chinese music and dance, Kung Fu demonstrations and Tai Chi demonstrations. Information from www. surfersparadise.com The Year of the Horse and Kookaburra – 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014 People born in the Year of the Horse are clever, kind, animated and energetic. Although they sometimes talk too much, they are cheerful, perceptive, talented, and love to be the centre of a crowd. They are popular among friends, active at work and have a deft sense of humour. Lucky gemstone: Beryl | Lucky colour: Green | Lucky numbers: 3, 4, 9 | Lucky flowers: Giant taro, Jasmine People born in the Year of the Horse include: Sir Isaac Newton, Barbara Streisand, Cindy Crawford, Jerry Seinfeld, John Travolta, Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney and Genghis Khan. Chinese New Year Facts Clean your house from top to bottom and pay off all debts before New Year (Pfft – good luck with that!) Decorate your home to welcome in the New Year. Red is a popular colour as it scares away evil spirits and bad fortune Place mandarins in bowls throughout the house. Mandarins with their leaves still intact are the fruits of happiness for the New Year. Keep their numbers even through, as uneven numbers bring unhappiness. Wear new clothes and ensure you are polite to others on the first day of the New Year – it sets the tone for the year to come Celebrate New Year with a family dinner. Traditional dishes include uncut noodles – a symbol of longevity – and fish and chicken, symbols of prosperity. Refrain from uttering words relating to misfortune, such as ‘death’, ‘broken’, ‘killing’, ‘ghost’ and ‘illness’ during New Year as this may bring bad luck for the year to come. Make sure the barrel of rice is full at New Year to ensure prosperity in the year to come. Give younger members of the family red Lai-see (‘lucky money’) envelopes to pass on prosperity.

Comedy Icon Austen Tayshus at Currumbin RSL 2013 marked 30 years since comedian and provocateur, Austen Tayshus (the stage name of Jewish Australian Comedian Alexander Jacob Gutman) had his hit comedy single Australiana chart at number one, spending weeks in this coveted spot. Co-written by Billy Birmingham, this rambling spoken word piece filled with Australian puns has become an iconic part of Australian identity. For the past 30 years this has been the mission of this one man comedy attack; to uncover, dissect and explode the myths around Australian identity. The son of a holocaust survivor, Gutman has honed a hatred of parochialism and bigotry, and uses his on stage tirade to uncover our most secret prejudice. Using satire as a crude tool he smashes through the audience, a wry smile and a calm demeanour. Not much impresses this big man, he's seen it all. He's had beer bottles thrown at him, he's been pushed through a window, escorted off a cruise ship for insulting the captain. But he
remains unfazed. 'I have been working as a stand-up comedian for three decades' says Tayshus. 'Alone, unprotected and at the mercy of drunken mobs. It is a most rewarding vocation. I perform in the toughest venues in Australia and around the world, and my act consists of outright provocation. Alcohol is the fuel of the audience, and I am the target of their rage. I wouldn't have it any other way.'
under the spotlight. Audiences know when things are fresh, when the gags are plucked from the moment, and these jokes get the biggest laughs. There is no better feeling for a comic than to set a crowd on a roar with a joke that you have conjured up out of thin air. They know it, you know it. It keeps you travelling down that Hard Road.' Austen Tayshus, wild, irreverent, politically current - this is one social autopsy you won't want to miss.
His approach is reflected in the title of the biography written on him by Ross Fitzgerald and Rick Murphy: Merchant of Menace. And yes, he is a trouble maker but a very clever one; and extremely funny. 'When I started in the game, I was scared shitless and rarely deviated from prepared material. The Austen Tayshus persona of dark glasses and black suit worked as a mask, a place to hide. Confidence grew as I became The Rock and Roll comic, opening for Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham or sharing the bill with Midnight Oil or INXS in front of thousands of out-of-it punters at Selinas or The Mona Vale Hotel in the 1980's.There was no chance of being quick on your feet, other than to dodge flying beer glasses.' 'My act is virtually all improvisation now, and the joy is in finding humour in everything around me, in my head, and especially

NEW HEAD CHEF & SUMMER SEASONAL MENU HEADLINE CURRUMBIN’S AWARD WINNING ALLEYS RESTAURANT Patrons of Alleys Restaurant, the multi-award winning flagship of Currumbin RSL have noticed their dining experience has recently changed for the better. A favourite venue of locals and tourists alike for many years, Alleys has both a new Head Chef and a new Seasonal Summer Menu. Featuring locally sourced produce - including herbs and vegetables from the club’s own garden, a variety of gluten free and vegetarian options and the culinary creativity of new Head Chef Felicity Best, Alleys caters for everyone in the family. Children’s’ meals and a free kids club with iPads look after the young patrons. New Head Chef, Felicity Best, hailing from Australia’s gourmet produce excellence capital, Tasmania, watched in awe as a child, as chefs in her family’s pub kitchen created patrons food. “I love great fundamental ingredients. Tasmania taught me that quality of simple food gives benefit to taste as well as the best nourishment.” She says. “These selective foundations of a dish should be handled with a light touch to let them speak for themselves. The upside of this is that the true nutritional value of the food is retained.” Says Felicity. Previously the owner of her own restaurant for 10 years, Ms Best is passionate about the whole dining experience – she loves to try new things, different cuisines and often draws on her travels for innovation in the kitchen. Especially inspirational to her is the Currumbin RSL garden where she sources most of the vegetables and herbs utilised in her dishes. Felicity is often seen foraging in the patch with her team members for needed ingredients. The new Alleys Summertime Seasonal Menu includes delicacies such as Duck and Macadamia Spring Rolls (gluten free), Crumbed Camembert Cheese and expertly sourced fresh Oysters done 3 ways. Mains include a Northern Rivers Rack of Lamb encrusted with

Sunday 19th January 2014 10 Tips for Surviving Big Day Out 2014 WATER! Drink it! Force yourself if you have to, but make sure you drink WATER! SLIP SLOP SLAP SEEK SLIDE! Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek some shade and Slide on some sunnies. You won’t regret it! PREPARE! Study the time table and circle the bands you absolutely want to see, and make sure each person in your party has a copy, so if you lose each other you’ll know ‘sort of’ the area each will be. Organise meeting places and times with friends beforehand, though odds are someone will be having a great time somewhere and not show. Don’t get annoyed, just accept that’s part of being at a festival. The important thing is the meeting place for the end of the day. KNOW THE GROUNDS! On arrival, walk the entire grounds and familiar yourself with each stage, amenities, bars, food outlets, chillout areas and medical tents. You’ll be glad you did it when you’re racing from one band to the next. SEE AN UNKNOWN! Just because you haven’t heard of a band before doesn’t mean they’re not worth seeing. Silverchair played on the smallest stage in the middle of the day at BDO and it wasn’t long after that they became HUGE! PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY! Limited and congested reception only means your texts won’t reach the recipients for four hours, and you probably won’t get through. See point 3 re being prepared, as it is highly likely you won’t be able to reach anyone via phone – if you do manage to get reception, they probably won’t hear the phone. PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY! You’re at an OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVAL! Why would you want to watch such great bands through the screen of your phone?? Watch the bands, listen to the bands and dance or jump around and sing along to the bands. Experience
and enjoy the day. Trust that there will 1,000 clips just like the one you ‘would’ have taken on You Tube before you even get home. How many times are you really going to watch it anyway? Only bring out your phone for a few photos for memories and to prove you were there, because we all know if there’s no pics it didn’t happen ;-) DON’T BINGE DRINK! If you’re in the bar queue every ten minutes, you’re going to miss out on some great band time, and you didn’t pay $185 to sit in a bar. Besides, you don’t want a hangover before the sun even sets, and you want to remember the day. We’re not saying don’t drink at all, we’re not total kill-joys ;-) TIME OUT! Take some time out during the day to check out the whole scene, you’ll be amazed at what you see when you’re looking. And it’s easy to be so caught up in the crowds that you miss a bunch of eye-opening and memorable visions. SURVIVAL KIT! When you’ve mastered it, everything you need can actually fit in a good sized bum-bag. Take a couple of panadol (if you’re allowed), a few squares of toilet paper in a small sandwich bag so it stays dry (has come in handy on more than a few occasions), a poncho, your driver licence, and a small stick of deodorant (for the benefit of everyone around you).

Bluejuice – Jake Stone Q&A Bluejuice have made many popular hit songs which include ‘Vitriol’, ‘Broken Leg’, ‘Act Yr Age’, and Nikki’s Gonna F*** Tonight’. Next time you turn on your radio, you might hear one of these songs – turn it up! They are adept at playing many of the music genres that are popular today, and whether it’s pop or rock, fast or slow, you can bet on Bluejuice to play a 55 minute set – that’s for sure. Visually, Bluejuice really put in a lot of effort. A common complaint from people who watch music is that not enough bands wear furred neon capes, or scrotum-suggesting fluffy jumpsuits. You don’t need to worry about that with Bluejuice! They are professional. We love a band who knows how to ‘take the piss’ out of themselves, and love it even more when we get to speak with them and realise their more serious and creative side. Jake Stone spoke with us from his home in Sydney while in the back yard wearing his “undies and Ugg boots”.
Q. How did “Bluejuice” become the band’s name? A. Well, it was the drummer and bass player who
started the band when they were playing as a twopiece horrible acid jazz gig (laughs). Jamie was working as a bar staff and they called him ‘Juice Master’ because he was making juice or some horrible thing. Ned similarly had a nickname called “Blue Sticks” which has nothing to do with drums. They came up with Bluejuice and it just stuck. And only one of those members is still in the band, and even he hates the name (laughs). It’s embarrassing
and it’s shameful – sums us up pretty well!
Q. Who’s Nikki??? A. Wow! How did you know about that song?
That’s a real B-side rarity. I don’t want to say exactly who is she as she’s a very successful music industry who’s done really well for herself. It was Neddy’s girlfriend and he was such a hopeless geek and also very intelligent, and he hated us ribbing him, so the song was kind of a backhander (laughs). It’s so old and so weird that song. Actually Nikki’s moving to EMI in the States soon!
Q. Your last album, ‘Company’ was released in 2011; can we expect a new one in the future? A. We decided we weren’t going to do records.
We’re a Singles band. I felt like we had something to say on ‘Company’ and the length for the record. I had an idea cover, etc and was happy and energetically anxious about that record. Now, I don’t think we have an album, but what do have is songs! The only sad part is it’s nice making a record, to explore a group of ideas in detail. Making singles work for radio and sound slick and cool is something I really enjoy, because it’s hard. It engages my mind and also feels artistic to make a pop song. I like radio and I like singles. You’ve got to try and write a hit! It’s a good challenge. We’ve got two singles planning over the next six months. The first one is an up-tempo tune which you’d expect from us, with subtle futurism… we hope. It’s got lots of stacked guitars and organ in a 70s arrangement. It’s something clever. Dan
Hume (one of the Hume brothers from Evermore) is producing. He’s a bit of a child prodigy in terms of music and a very good mixing engineer as well. I’m looking forward to his ideas, as I have the concept in a broader sense but getting down to writing vocal harmonies and things like that, I don’t have the technical ability to do that. It helps having Dan who has that experience and ingenuity with that bigger picture. I’m writing and giving the concepts, and looking for the right person who agrees on the vision. Producing is always a challenging interaction. The second single is a bit darker and quieter, and I like that one the best. It has the most potential to sound original and contemporary. It’s still got a groove, drums and stuff but more pared back and the sentiment is more atmospheric and dark. I hope people like it because we feel like it’s got a vibe. And 11 years in, you can drop that kind of stuff in, especially if it’s preceded by a fun song. This is what I hope!
Q. Apart from playing, what are you most looking forward to at this year’s BDO? A. I might to get to meet Snoop Dogg! Or
Snoopzilla, Snoop Lion - I’ll call him whatever he wants but it’s Snoop Dogg in my mind! (laughs).
Q. Do you have a favourite track to play live? A. Depends on the setting but doing Cheap Tricks with the band because Alex likes playing 90s house piano, so when he’s playing I ‘know’ he’s having the most fun in the set. Also the big ones that get big response – Act Yr Age seems to be a perennial.
Thy Art is Murder – CJ McMahon Q&A Rising from the unhallowed wastes of Western Sydney, extreme metal outfit Thy Art is Murder has carved a trail of bloody mayhem since their inception in 2006. With an acclaimed back catalogue, the band’s latest album ‘Hate’ has seen Thy Art is Murder’s infamy explode worldwide on the back on intense touring throughout Australia, Europe, the UK, Asia and the Americas with a who’s who of heavy metal as well as successful headline shows in as many far flung corners of the globe they can get to. Simply titled “Hate”, the band’s second full length is the pointed result of Thy Art is Murder’s growing dissatisfaction with all aspects of modern life – political, religious, social and environmental – everyone is to blame. Fusing the blasting technicality of metal luminaries The Black Dahlia Murder with thunderous breakdowns and the intensity born of their nascent hometown scene; the blackened grandeur of Behemoth and the pit churning groove of Tampa originators Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse, the furious musical arrangements provide a bloody canvas for vocalist CJ McMahon’s outpourings of bile. No strangers to stoking controversy and criticism, the band have not toned down their art for the sake of palatability and have introduced a morose melodicism into their maelstrom – the rumination before pulling the trigger.
Q. Congratulations on “Hate” debuting at No.35 on the ARIA Charts and Thy Art is Murder being the first extreme metal band to ever reach the Top 40 of this chart! Why do you think this album is so popular? A. ‘Coz there’s a lot of hate in the world and people are starting show that
hate can be as powerful as love can be. I know myself, I hate more things in this world than I love. Of course I love my partner, my friends and family, fishing; you don’t have to be down about it, but you need to think about it. Especially with religion decreasing so rapidly around the world as people ask more questions about it; and the educational system is as completely fucking corrupt as the religions. It’s just a way of getting that message out and the
Page 14
www.thebizzgc.com.au
vibe of the band.
Q. Tell us about the writing process of “Hate”. Are the lyrics written before the music or vice versa? A. Basically Sean our bass player – he’s written everything since the EP, and
Cosmic Psychos – Ross Knight Q&A For 30 years, the Cosmic Psychos have blazed a trail of empty beer cans and busted ear drums around the globe with their quintessential Australian drawl and pounding punk rock songs. But perhaps their biggest reputation was their ability to drink pubs dry, with word quickly spreading as a warning to other touring bands – “Never drink with the Psychos!” Fronted by Ross Knight, “Blokes You Can Trust” is a documentary that tracks the band’s adventures along the rock and roll highway, from downtown Kyneton in rural Victoria, into some of New York’s finest S&M parlours and Seattle grunge scene where they were highly influential. Nirvana were Psychos fans, and they even played shows with Pearl Jam! "I think the Cosmic Psychos were a band that was highly influential on the Seatlle so called grunge scene. I know that Kurt and Nirvana were fans, they played shows with Pearl Jam. Even though the Cosmic Psychos never had the commercial impact or success that those bands had, they were still a major influence on them, and I think a lot of it had to do with the spirit and the sound of their music." Butch Vig - Producer (Nirvana Nevermind) Cosmic Psychos are Australia’s most unique cultural ambassadors, who sing about dead kangaroos, pubs and schnitzels, and they played the very first Big Day Out in 1992. We got to speak with a very laid-back and jovial Ross Knight after a day of bulldozing, and he proved men can multi-task as he juggled domestic duties with his interview with us.
Q. It’s been more than 30 years and Cosmic Psychos are still rockin’. How have you kept it together all this time?
A. Just not taking it too seriously and having a
good time! We kept the band as a hobby; music will go forever that way. Like any job, you get pissed off with it, but this way we don’t get pissed off.
Q. How did “Blokes You Can Trust” come about? A. It all started when I found a heap of old film
and thought there might be some good shit there (laughs). There was a heap of backstage and tour stuff and I asked Dean’s wife if she could transfer it to disc and when she went through it all she suggested we do a doco as there was so much there. She talked Matt Weston into having a yarn with me, and he took some boxes and videos and stuff and came back with a film! It actually documents the band’s history pretty well.
Q. “Blokes You Can Trust” has interviews and
endorsements from some pretty cool names, including Eddie Vedder, Mudhoney and Butch Vig who even states Cosmic Psychos influenced Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene. WTF!?
A. (laughing) Buggered if I know! The question actually gets asked a lot and I guess it’s coz they’re good blokes, good people, and good people attract good people. Look, they’re just some people we’ve met along the way. We never had a plan; we just bumbled and stumbled along the way. I think we may have influenced them on how to behave like clowns at a party more than musically…
pages, now it goes for 2 paragraphs. It’s pretty hard if you’re starting now, though with the internet machine thing, bands are getting exposure anyway. Hopefully it’s just a phase and things might turn around. Who would have thought people would be buying vinyl again!? They’re going crazy over it (laughs). Hopefully the younger people will get back into going to a pub and seeing a band, and stop watching the screen. You can do a lot of socialising on the way to the floor if you go out and drink beer. It’s the venues – if there’s a venue the bands will come, like a swarm of bees the bands will come.
Q. You’ve played a few BDO’s now, do you have one that’s most memorable? A. Probably the very first one in Sydney, when
Nirvana first hit Australian shores. And definitely the one where we got ambushed! Mudhoney couldn’t make it because their flight got delayed or something and it was like we got the blame for it. It had been raining in Melbourne and it was just set up for 10,000 agro people to throw mud at us. We walked off stage covered in mud and metres of it on our heads. I’ve still got mud in one of the speaker boxes! Seeing Silverchair when they started as kids and experiences the ‘Beatlemania’ that went with it was another one.
Q. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s BDO?
Q. We believe festivals are keeping ‘Live’ music
A. Playing with Pearl Jam who are great mates of
A. I feel sorry for anyone starting out now. Even
Q. What’s your favourite song to play live? A. Geez I don’t know. They all sound the same
alive; with all the red tape and restrictions on artists and venues these days, what are your thoughts on the ‘live’ music scene?
in Melbourne, the gig guide used to go for 2
he sits down and nuts out the music and then we it to New York, New Jersey and sit down with our producer. The drummer starts recording and when the drums tracks are done, the guitars are laid out, and that’s when we write the lyrics, or restructure lyrics we already have. It’s always the music first. We find it easier for us to fit lyrics to music for a better flow and melody to come through.
Q. Tell us about recording in New Jersey? A. The Machine Shop with Will Putney as our producer – the only guy we’ll go
to until he dies, because he’s the best producer in the world as far as metal goes. He’s young, has the best ear and best brains for our style of music. He’s done the biggest records of 2013/14 and we work with him because he is the best. And he’s super nice, friendly, intelligent, hilarious and the best at his job. When the rest of the world wakes up and realises, it’s going to be hard to get with him.
Q. There have been a few line-up changes, what is it about this line-up of Thy Art is Murder that makes it work so well? A. Well at the moment there are the four of us. Lee and Sean are the only
original members. I started a year and a bit after band started and Andy’s been with us four around four years. And we’ve got our friend from Melbourne who tours with us and we’re trialling that. The four of us are very connected. We’ve had problems with other muso’s in the band due to theft and them just being dickheads – un-loyal, lies – it’s just like the famous Slipknot song, “People=Shit”. You have to realise there’s five band members and three crew and you see these people more than you see your own family. You shower with them, shit with them, everything, and it can get overwhelming. And when these people are trying to do the wrong thing by the band, they have to go. It’s like being given a golden egg and making up some bullshit story about how you
ours! It’s a great excuse to sit around and have a nice cold beer and a good yarn.
(laughs) so all of them!
bought it, but it was given to you! It was given to you so look after it! Basically, they’ve been removed from the band because they’re dickheads, none of this ‘artistic difference’ bullshit.
Q. Where has been your favourite place to tour? A. Europe. Anywhere in Europe! UK, Scotland, Germany, Mother Germany,
Mother Russia, Poland, fuck, Holland, Denmark Sweden, anywhere in Europe! Europe is just so much better – smart, good food, countryside is beautiful, hospitable, the culture, history, architecture… Europe is the place to be! A lot of places in America we love as well, but Europe is my personal and the band’s favourite place, and we’re going in three days! We get back a week and half before Soundwave.
Q. Do you have a favourite track to play live? A. Pretty much a lot of the material on “Hate”. Especially ‘Shadow of Eternal
Sin’ and ‘Reign of Darkness’ – I just love them. ‘Vile Creation’ I love but also hate, as it has a lot of sections and goes from highs to lows to mids and it’s hard vocally and breathing. I also like that because it pushes me as a musician I guess.
Q. This year’s Soundwave is up there with one of the best line-ups so far, are there any particular acts you’re looking forward to catching/playing alongside with? A. Number One is DIR EN GREY! The Dillinger Escape Plan – my best friends and great dudes, A Day to Remember, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, KORN – just to name a few (laughs).
Q. Do you have a message for the Brisbane Soundwave fans? A. Just, watch out! It’s gonna be our first show in Australia for 2014, on the
back of Europe. Be prepared for chaos; someone’s gonna get hurt real bad!

Making a name for himself with bootleg remixes of R&B and hip-hop classics from Janet Jackson, Missy Elliot, TLC, Danny Brown and TeedraMoses, the young beatsmith has caught the attention of seasoned heavyweights, with names such as Brodinski and Lunice paying attention. At just 21-years-old his unique and innovative approach to traditional instrumental hip-hop soundscapes have garnered over 1.5 million views and listens on YouTube and Soundcloud. His debut album KaytraTodo is making waves and with a string of shows here in Australia that could only be described as OFF THE CHAIN, we’ll be welcoming Kaytranada with open arms for Future Music Festival 2014!
Q. How did you get into DJ’ing and when
did you have that ‘moment’ when you KNEW that this is what you wanted to do? A. Actually like, I started DJ’ing when I was 13, I wasn’t even a DJ, it was software on my unit called Virtual DJ. I just loved scratching records. It was always a fun thing for me to do on the computer. Then my brother (little) got me into SO Studio and that’s when I knew. I was actually 13 when he introduced me to it. Q. What’s your process in mixing a track? Where does your inspiration for each track from? A. Actually like, I’m mixing a remix. Basically with my remixes I listen to the original song on repeat and I’m enjoying it, and then I look for acapella’s and find one I like “Sock it to Me” Missy Elliot, and I’m like Oh My God! When I get the Acapella, it’s like a spine that tells me I have to remix it. I download it and do my thing; I feel like I’m possessed. When I know it’s going to be good, it’s easy for me. When it’s in the
moment it does it by itself. I have the drums or the synth and I don’t know what’s going on, it’s weird you know (laughs). I still think it’s weird. Q. Who are your main influences? A. You could say Janet Jackson is on my list. Mad Liv – I’m a big fan of Mad Liv. I’m usually a hip hop dude. Michael Jackson too! Michael and Janet Jackson are my main influences. Q. What’s your favourite thing about what you do? A. I love mixing! I just love playing and doing my sets and seeing the crowd enjoying it. It’s a really cool thing to see, I would love to do this for a long time. It’s really cool to see the crowd vibing to my music, and when people go crazy. Q. You’ve had a huge year and practically been around the world touring, has there been a standout show in 2013? A. Sort of, I can’t remember. Paris was really cool, first time I came here. It was a mix of pride. Melbourne was crazy too, really wild. Every show at LA was crazy too this year. London too, I have to put London in there. My Paris show was really cool. It’s more easy for me so I’m happy about that, when I go to Paris I can easily speak their language. Q. You’ve toured Australia and we want to know what your favourite gig was and how you found the audiences here? A. I don’t know the name of the place, it’s a restaurant during day and at night it’s a nightclub. Crazy crowd and crazy vibe and it was my 21st birthday so it was really cool. It was really wild, had fun no matter what. Even though I was by myself it was really cool! Q. For the up-and-comers and those wanting to achieve what you’re
achieving, do you have any advice? A. I always say for people to be themselves no matter what. You don’t need to sound loud. Do a You! And just show the people! If you have something don’t be afraid to show them. I think I’m showing something to the world and people should do that more often. Q. We’re excited to be able to see you perform at FMF where you’re being promoted as one of the “hottest newcomers”, how does that feel? A. Makes me feel so weird, honestly. To be one of the biggest up and comers or whatever, I think that’s pretty crazy. I’m speechless a little bit. Very weird but I am happy. Q. When can we expect the next full album? A. Yeah definitely. It’s going to come out but not sure exactly when. Can’t say officially, but I’m definitely going to start working on it in 2014. Gold Coast Cover Bands It’s a great night out!
In each edition we feature an exceptional local musical artist or band to showcase our home-grown talent and the great things they’re doing in the industry. In this issue we want to pay homage to some of the best local cover bands we have on the Gold Coast who work so hard week in and week out to provide us with the best entertainment, and to be able to keep doing their craft. With the lack of purpose-built venues for bands on the Gold Coast, our artists are struggling to find enough work performing their original material to earn a living, though fortunately the Gold Coast is full of venues that do put on cover bands. It’s a sad and unjust truth that being a musician is often misrepresented as being a ‘party-person’, or a ‘creative-type’ that doesn’t have or want to work too hard. We’d like to point out that being in a cover band (or any band) means at least 8 hours of work
per gig, and to earn a National average income would need to have a gig every night of the week. We only see the normal 3 x 1 hour sets they perform on stage; we don’t see the loading of equipment, traveling to venue, lugging in to the venue, setting up, packing up, lugging out and unloading when home, nor the hours of practicing, learning and perfecting hundreds of songs. This profession is as physical as it is ‘creative’. Each ‘gig’ will pay each member an average of around $200 (gross/before tax), and if you break this down to an hourly rate based on a very conservative 8 hours, it’s around $25/hr that doesn’t take in to account the learning or rehearsing time needed. The problem our artists are facing is there are not enough gigs to be able to perform 7 nights a week, in fact most are lucky to have 2 a week! The good news for us – the punters, the audience who can enjoy a great night or
afternoon with friends, dancing and being entertained by a live band – is these artists love their craft and will work long and hard hours to perform for us. But, like any business, they need our support, so why stay home looking at a screen when you can enjoy the uplifting experience of live music!? We believe they need more recognition and to be better remunerated, though we need to show the venues they are worth it – and they are worth it! There are countless cover bands in our city all wanting a shot, though we’re featuring only five (5) local cover bands that we believe to be stand-outs. They’re all different and wonderful in their own way, and we’ve given you a brief description of their genre, set-list and what they’re all about. Look out for them in our Gig Guide and get along to a show for a GREAT NIGHT OUT!
The Accidents have a well-earned reputation of being one of our city’s leading cover bands. With a combination of youthful exuberance and hard-earned experience, this amazing group of people will rock your socks off, and show you what a good time is really about. Their repertoire covers all genres of music, making them a real-deal ‘Party Band’ that genuinely has a full dance floor at every venue they play. Often booked for big corporate parties, if you see The Accidents in the Gig Guide, you won’t regret going along; except maybe for the sore feet and heads afterward. Band members are:
Sherridan Leigh Singer Beautiful and has the voice of an angel Scott Whatman Guitar Faster fingers than a Wall Street futures trader Troy (The Boy) Drums More Chops than your local butcher Set-list includes though not limited to: Classic Hits, today’s Top 40 hits, songs from Katy Perry, Pink, Potbeleez, Kings of Leon, Kid Rock, Lady GaGa, John Mayer, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Hunters & Collectors, Transvision Vamp, Divinyls and Cold Chisel. Remedy
Remedy is a very popular Rock Covers band, and you know a band is good when even other musicians respect them! Experience and talent put this band at the top of the list for cover bands in the genre of Rock. It’s always a great night out when Remedy is playing. Band members are: Mike Edwards Vocals/Bass Shahn Itong Guitar Bryan Macaranas Drums Michael Duckworth Drums (occasionally) Rick Hollis Guitar (occasionally)
Set-list includes though not limited to: Foo Fighters, Blur, 3 Doors Down, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Blink 182, Green Day, Jet, Screaming Jets, Smashing Pumpkins, Powderfinger, G’N’R, U2, Grinspoon, Black Crows, Silverchair, Oasis and loads of classic 70’s and 80’s including (but not limited to) Bryan Adams, Daddy Cool, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Soft Cell, to name a few. Vertigo is a Live Party Band that covers Contemporary, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Pop and Funk. We’d go so far as to say there is a ‘sophistication’ that comes with this outfit. Prominent vocal harmonies built on a foundation of well-honed instrumental prowess deliver a one-two punch to set Vertigo apart from the everyday cover band. Having a reputation for free-spirited spontaneous performances, the Vertigo name has gained a loyal flow of popularity amongst the region’s live music enthusiasts. A vast repertoire of styles ensures Vertigo’s appeal to every audience every time!
Band members are: Shane Wilkie Lead Vocals/Bass Christian O’Donnell Lead Guitar/Vocals Leon Ernst Drums Set-list includes though not limited to: Matchbox 20, Lenny Kravitz, Powderfinger, David Gray, Bob Marley, Maroon 5, Chuck Berry, Stereophonics, The Eagles, The Killers, INXS, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Stone Temple Pilots, Billy Idol, John Butler Trio, Toto, The Beatles, Radiohead, Brittney Spears and more.
Alter Egos are unarguably our favourite cover band of the moment, and you can see our review on the website to see why. With a set-list spanning more than four decades of class party anthems and fresh hits, they have an ever-growing arsenal for rocking the house, no matter how big or how small the occasion. Frontman Paul Galagher is one of the most experienced and uniquely talented musicians you’ll come across (and easy on the eye ladies!), and with this line-up that is called Alter Egos you are guaranteed a great night of partying and rocking the dance floor – whether you’re 18 or 80!
Band members are: Paul Galagher Vocals/Guitar Luke Pammenton Drums Scotty Saunders/Glenn Esmond Bass and sometimes Nickos Muir Keys/Vocals Set-list includes but not limited to: Muse, The Beatles, Same Cooke, Van Morrison, Coldplay, Cher, The Killers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul Kelly, Eric Clapton, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, Janis Joplin, Metallica, Jeff Buckley, Roy Orbison, and many many more…

When In Rome When In Rome is what you could classify as a Funk Rock covers band. They tend to do ‘versions’ of songs, taking them and making them work for bass, drums and guitar – and it works. There is an energy that comes with this band that is fun, probably because all members are always having a good time doing what they love. They don’t do your runof-the-mill covers, but they always pull it off. Band members are:
Chris “Boinz” Vocals/Guitar Rob O’Sullivan Bass Luke Mander Drums/Percussion Set-list includes but not limited to: Diesel, Tonic, Mumford and Sons, Fallout Boy, Paul Kelly, The Truth, Eric Bibb, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Fray, Daryl Braithwaite, Vanessa Carlton, Seal, Faith No More, Bee Gees, Sublime, Goo Goo Dolls, Gavin Degraw, The Black Keys, MGNT and more.

Rising from the unhallowed wastes of Western Sydney, extreme metal outfit Thy Art is Murder has carved a trail of bloody mayhem since their inception in 2006. A. ‘Coz there’s a lot of hate in the world and people are starting show that hate can be as powerful as love can be. It’s just a way of getting that message out and the vibe of the band. Q. Tell us about the writing process of “Hate”. Are the lyrics written before the music or vice versa?
A. Basically Sean our bass player – he’s written everything since the EP, and he sits down and nuts out the music and then we it to New York, New Jersey and sit down with our producer. A. The Machine Shop with Will Putney as our producer – the only guy we’ll go to until he dies, because he’s the best producer in the world as far as metal goes. Lee and Sean are the only original members. You have to
realise there’s five band members and three crew and you see these people more than you see your own family. You shower with them, shit with them, everything, and it can get overwhelming. And when these people are trying to do the wrong thing by the band, they have to go. It’s like being given a golden egg and making up some bullshit story about how you bought it, but it was given to you! It was given to you so look after it! Basically, they’ve been removed from the band because they’re dickheads, none of this ‘artistic difference’ bullshit. Q. Where has been your favourite place to tour? A. Europe. Anywhere in Europe! UK, Scotland, Germany, Mother Germany, Mother Russia, Poland, fuck, Holland, Denmark Sweden, anywhere in Europe! Especially ‘Shadow of Eternal Sin’ and ‘Reign of Darkness’ – I just love them. It’s gonna be our first show in Australia for 2014, on the back of Europe. Be prepared for chaos; someone’s gonna get hurt real bad!
Since their inception, Mayday Parade has honed their patented style of catchy, kinetic pop- punk with an outpour of real rock energy. The Florida quintet knows its identity but have more excitement for the future with the new album. “Monsters in the Closet” is a collection of everything the group's fervent fan base loves about Mayday Parade. Evincing evolution in song-writing, the band's growth shines through shimmering soaring hooks throughout the unshakable, heart-felt collection of songs. Mayday Parade have come a long way since their landmark 2007 debut, A Lesson In Romantics, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and held a chart position for 70 weeks, laying the framework for the band's path to success. To date, their album sales have exceeded 600,000 while track sales surpass 3,000,000. Their selftitled third album entered the Billboard Top 200 at #12 in 2011, and the band has been a standout on the Punk Goes... series. Having crossed the globe on countless tours, Mayday Parade’s impressive touring resume includes sharing stages with the acts such as Plain White T's, Pierce The Veil, All Time Low, The Maine, We The Kings, We Are The In Crowd and Set Your Goals. We spoke with Derek Sanders, Vocalist for Mayday Parade. Q. Congratulations on your 4th Studio Album, Monsters in the Closet! Tell us about the writing process of this album. Do you all get together and jam, or like so many these days, have home studios, record your own things and send them to each other? A. We spend a lot of time touring, so basically during that time as well as time off, everyone comes up with a bunch of ideas. In January 2013 we went to a beach house for a month writing together, and we just brought in all these ideas we’ve been working on separately. We spent a month recording. We did the same thing with our self-titled album and it worked out so well. It’s very fun and free and it works for us. Q. You obviously love every track on the album, but is there that one that gives you that extra Hell Yeah!? A. I think I’d say “Ghosts” the first song is probably my favourite and most special to me. It was the first idea I had that I was really excited about and that was over two years ago, so it’s most special for that reason. Q. Do you have a favourite track to play live? A. It definitely changes, but for the most part, a lot of the more energetic upbeat songs like Black Cat has always been one of my favourites. And playing Ghosts is really awesome! Q. You’ve done a lot of touring, is there a standout show you’ve played, or what’s your favourite show memory to date? A. It’s really tough to say, I will say that I remember Melbourne Soundwave 2011 being a pretty crazy moment by just how massive the crowd was and how influenced they were – singing along and so energetic. It blew my mind – and everyone’s minds! That was a special moment. I remember playing Manilla and it’s always so incredible there, but the second time we were there, there was a moment we were playing a softer song and everyone had their cell phones and it was lit up, and I was thinking how incredible this was with everyone singing along.
Mayday Parade is Derek Sanders (vocals), Jeremy Lenzo (bass), Alex Garcia (guitar), Brooks Betts (guitar), and Jake Bundrick (drums).
Q. Are you all based in Florida? A. We’re all from Florida, except the drummer who’s from Georgia. Now
some of the guys have moved to different places, but Florida is still home base. Q. Tell us how you came up with the name Mayday Parade? A. More than anything we just kind of picked a name (laughs) I wish there was a better story. We actually recorded 2 songs and still didn’t have a name for the band. Alex and Jake together came up with it and we just went with it. Q. The Mayday History Photo Book is a great idea, where did that idea come from? More bands should do it! A. We had mentioned doing something like that for a while – a DVD or a photo book and our merch guy, who’s been with us for five years or more, and our photographer spearheaded the project and got it going, and put a lot of it together. They deserve credit for making it happen. I got it today for the first time and it’s really just incredible. It has stuff from way back at the beginning to now. I’m really stoked! Q. Soundwave is our biggest and favourite festival of the year and the line-up is sensational. Are there any acts you’re keen to see while on this tour? A. Definitely really excited to see Jimmy Eat World - just incredible. Clyro (Biffy Clyro), Green Day, a lot of the small bands but they’re incredible. Gosh, I’d have to be looking at the list – definitely lots of them. Oh Korn, I’ve never seen them play live! Q. With four albums now, will we get to hear a good part of “Monsters in the Closet” in your set? How are you going to go about choosing which songs make the set list? A. Exactly, it’s going to be difficult and we haven’t figured it out yet. I don’t know how much time we have for our set! You know, we’ll do a couple songs from each; try and play stuff from the first EP. A little bit from each album hopefully, and try to be creative with it and not do the same thing. Q. Do you have a message for the Brisbane festival-goers? A. I don’t know (laughs). Work hard; you’ve gotta make it happen. Whatever it is you’re passionate about in life. Take it seriously, and do it your way. For us we’re lucky and happy to be able to do it. It’s very humbling. I’m super stoked about it.
