Editor’s Letter Hello and welcome to another jam-packed edition of The Bizz GC! The “Festive Season” has passed, but the Gold Coast is lighting up with events and festivals. It’s definitely “FestivAL Season” and Soundwave 2014 dominates this Issue. We spoke with local lads from Greef Clothing Company who aim to be as big, even bigger than other local success story, Unit! Whilst searching for all the activity happening over the next three weeks we discovered that there are a host of FREE movie nights, so are introducing a new Free Movie Night Guide! With the Markets, Music, Tides and Library guides, you have something different to do every day of the week. Sand Safari Treks across the Gold Coast Australian Sand Sculpting Championships are back PLUS Gold Coast wide Sand Trail, 20 tonne feature sculpture and Australia vs The World Sand Battle. Mystical, magical and legendary characters will spring up across the Gold Coast this February as a huge Sand Safari event makes its way to our golden shores. An initiative of Surfers Paradise Alliance, Sand Safari encompasses four different events across three weeks which will require more than 250 tonnes of sand to be transported to the Gold Coast. Presented by Streets Ice Cream, Sand Safari begins with The Gold Coast Sand Trail, which leads to three intense days of battle during the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships. At the same time, a collaborative construction of a giant 20 tonne sand sculpture will take shape on the Surfers Paradise Foreshore; and the entire event culminates in an Australia versus The World team sand sculpting challenge. For the first time, the popular, sandy experience will extend beyond Surfers Paradise as a mythical Sand Trail is created with intricately carved sand sculptures popping up in hotel lobbies, shopping centres and public spaces across the Gold Coast. Constructed on site and using between one and two tonnes of sand each, the Sand Trail will appear in 14 locations across the GC between Helensvale and Tweed Heads from 8 February until 2 March. From 14th February, the hugely successful family friendly Australian Sand Sculpting Championships will return to Surfers Paradise and transform it into a magical sand wonderland as 10 professional sand sculptors from around the country battle it out on the iconic Foreshore. Spectators can watch the stories unfold as the sculptors interpret this year’s theme of Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales, and are encouraged to vote for their favourite finished product for the people’s choice award, announced at the completion of the whole event on 2nd March.

Also from the 14th of February, some of the best sculptors in the world will work together to create a giant 20 tonne sand sculpture for Streets that will take centre stage on the foreshore. From 20th February it will be Australia versus the World as the two teams form to see who can carve the best sculpture from 25 tonnes of sand. The teams will do battle across three days before one is awarded the coveted prize of best collaborative sand sculpture. Designed as an interactive event, there will be plenty of free activities on offer for families and children alike including beachfront sand sculpting workshops lead by professional sculptor Yves Gerraedts. Participants can also learn the ropes of sand art and sand bottle making. GREEF Industries Cothing Company Local Lads with Global Goals Brothers Jay (29), Troy (27) and Ryan (25) Cochrane are set for a huge year and beyond with their own “extreme casual wear” label – Greef Industries Clothing Company. The Bizz GC discovered the creative, energetic and ambitious siblings when dealing with Troy through popular local radio station 1029 Hot Tomato, where he works as a graphic designer, and wanted to share their story with the rest of the Gold Coast. We sat down with the jovial trio at the Ashmore BMX track to learn more about their products and visions. Greef Industries Clothing Company was established in 2005 and is a casual clothing company with a desire to provide high quality accessories for the action sports generation. Greef supports Motorcross, Wakeboarding, BMX and also Backflips, Paddock Bashing and any other random craziness in the backyard. “This generation is out to have fun with no limits which is why Greef Industries was formed, to support use doing what use love best! The brothers are very adamant about keeping it in Australia as much as they can. They print everything themselves from home and do everything they can to keep their overheads down. Each of them have full-time jobs, so between work, extreme sports and their clothing company, there’s very little down time for these go-getters. You already know that Troy is a graphic designer; Ryan is an Earthworks Supervisor and Jay is a Caravan Park Manager at Mini Water. Getting personal on the handsome trio, we asked about their relationship status and were informed with much laughter that, “Jay is practically married; Troy is ‘fiance’d up’ and Ryan might as well be albeit that relationship is still new.” Back to Greef, consumers can purchase online and the price range is around $30 to $40 with Jay assuring us “It’s all top quality stuff!” “We’ve sold products to New Zealand, Canada and all over Page 8

Greef have a few sponsored riders, and we heard a little about Cameron Hermansen who does freestyle Motocross, and 11 year old Lauchlan Hughes who is the current Queensland state champion for Go-Karting. Brad Wallace, Miles Clissold and Ben Madden are a few more names in the industry of extreme sports who Greef Clothing sponsor. On up-coming events Jay tells us they’re doing another Enduro Day at Extreme Karting, “It’s good fun and it’s for everyone. There are teams of girls as well.” The event involves a challenge of over 200ks in Sodi GT5 hire karts in teams of three. Keep an eye on their website for more details. “We’re also launching an online web series” says Troy, explaining the idea, “Everyone tells us we have interesting lives with what we do so we thought we’d make a series about it. We want to get people involved though, by submitting their footage of what they do!” Ryan elaborates, “We do deep-sea / game fishing, so it’ll be a blog about ourselves and what we do, and about how Greef is run.” Jay agrees, adding “People submit videos of different actions, be it fishing, motocross, bmx, whatever it is they’re in to.” The series is called Livin Aint Eezy and submissions are welcome right now via www.greef.com.au Jay: “The launch party for Livin Aint Eezy will be around late February” Ryan: “It’s an Open Invite!” Troy: “First in best dressed!” Jay: “Usually when we have a new line, we try and do a launch for it.” Troy: “Everyone likes alcohol and a good party! 7D Cinema a Thrill!
3D movie fans in Australia are set to experience films in a whole new dimension with 7D Cinemas set to open across the country in 2014. 7D Cinema combines thrilling virtual reality technology with high tech rollercoaster movements and special effects such as snow and rain. The latest technology, the recipient of awards in Europe, brings the theme park experience to metropolitan areas and is expected to be a leisure trend for 2014. Since opening the first Australia location in Surfers Paradise in August 2012, the Virtual Reality chain is now opening its second location – just 500 metres away on Cavill Ave. Managing Director of 7D Cinema Michael Kurt said the high demand for a second 7D Cinema showed that 21st Century movie-goers were looking for more interaction out of their cinema experiences. “We scoured the world to find the latest technology in virtual reality to allow our guests to feel as though they are part of the movie in a way that has never been done before in Australia,” said Mr Kurt. “We offer family films, horror movies and action adventures, all complete with spectacular special effects and unbeatable simulator movements. This is the only simulator in the world that produces drops that recreate that lower-belly, rollercoaster feeling,” he said. The 7D Cinema experience features battery-operated interactive 3D glasses along with more than seven different special effects including snow, bubbles, wind, fog, smell, leg tickle, lightning and rain to create the virtual reality sensation. The experience begins with cinema-goers buckled up in Ferrari-style seats on either a six or nine seat simulator designed to produce exhilarating movements throughout the eight minute films. This latest technology enables visitors to be part of the movie and to feel what they see as the state-of-the-art simulator moves according to what is happening on screen. We got to experience the thrill sensations - The Great Wall of China and Surfer’s Coaster, and horror – Bloody Road. All three brought about screams, cringes and a lot of OMG’s and hysterical laughing, and we couldn’t recommend this experience more! The Great Wall of China and Surfer’s Coaster are musts. Try it once and you’ll be back! Luddite does not have or use a computer or email. He drives a 54 year old vehicle in which he ventures out to explore, discover and gather objects which retain their own memories and some have secret meanings. Of his work, Luddite asks the viewer to read the title tag and the concept will be revealed. Luddite attended art school in North America enabling him to lecture full-time over the past three decades at tertiary level in Australia. He has a great respect for the artists Kurt Schwitters, Ed Kienholz and Rosalie Gascoigne. The collection of works in this exhibition may be influenced by having the knowledge that Fred Luddite was conceived in a wonderful object, a varnished wooden rowboat on Rice Lake, Ontario on his father’s birthday. Without modern technology where does Fred find inspiration? In his own words, Fred says “I start with finding one object - the alpha object - which then determines the nature of the work. It’s important to find the right object and this can take lots of experimentation, sometimes three or four weeks. From there other items are assembled, and things begin to gain importance because they survived.”
“With Mouse Trap the alpha object is the wooden boat builder clamp, which would have been prized during its life - it’s in good condition, no scratches. The shape is reminiscent of the jaw of a pelican or the dinosaur tyrannosaurus. New objects don’t really work, they can lack character - they don’t have the patina. Ironically Mouse Trap features a computer mouse, but they are almost historic in the technological era as people are now using finger touch on laptops instead!”

A casual Modern Greek kafe with an outdoor garden bar, we discovered The Great Greek on our last issue delivery rounds, and we are so glad we did! Located in the heart of Southport in an iconic building that has been part of the community for generations, the atmosphere of being relaxed, enjoyable and welcome is felt from the street out front already. Remember, this is a “Modern Greek Kafe”, so any image of the typical Greek Restaurant and smashing of plates need to exit your mind immediately, however keep every image of the any amazing Greek dish you have ever experienced forefront. This is an iconic building that dates back to the 1920s, and it feels like you’ve just walked into home when you enter, complete with lounge suite and family photos. Walk through the house/ restaurant past the indoor bar and open kitchen, and step in to the outdoor garden bar (which is covered to cater for all weather conditions). This area can cater for up to 200 stand-up cocktail party, and has a beautiful setting that continues the initial inviting atmosphere of being relaxed, enjoyable and welcoming. Speaking of feeling welcome, we were greeted by Restaurateur and Chef “Manny” – the King of No-Nonsense - who treats you as if he’d known you for a life-time (we even got ribbed for eating our Olive and Feta Roll with cutlery instead of our hands, which was actually very charming, as well as a reminder that we really could relax and enjoy our meals as if we were in our own home). The creative Greek cuisine specialises in beautiful breads, tasty dips, great salads, Mezze plates, Greek classics, and Steakhouse favourites are all cooked on BBQ Charcoal. We were treated to a number of plates that we could do a half page review on each one of them, they were so good! We’ll keep it brief so you can get the picture, and then go and try some for yourself. Pita Bread: “There’s no garlic on MY pita!” exclaims Manny as I pronounce it’s the “best garlic bread ever”. Made on the premises with olive oil and oregano, you’d be forgiven for thinking there had to be more to it. Tarama and Melitzana Dips: Amazing! The Melitzana is Manny’s recipe and we would have been happy if all we ate was this dip with the Pita. The Great Greek Village Salad: You don’t make friends with salad right!? Wrong! How do you explain a simple salad that is YUM!? Personally, I’m a Chef’s nightmare and salt absolutely everything, always. Not with anything that came out at The Greak Greek, including the salad – incredibly tasty and includes peppers that you just pick up with your fingers and indulge. Octopus: Before you say “I don’t eat octopus” my business partner is adamant that he doesn’t eat Seafood at all, let alone occy. When the plate of BBQ octopus with herbs, lemon and oil came out and he asked what this was I said “Chicken”. We all had a good laugh as he enjoyed his first mouthful before we came clean. Pan Fried Feta and Olive Bread (Chef’s Specialty): NB: Eat with your hands! Now, the dish of the day hands down goes to the (drum roll deserved here)… Mussels Saganaki: Live Black Mussels served in a rich tomato, oregano, garlic and chilli sauce – After allowing everyone to taste this magnificent dish, I unashamedly took control of the bowl and proceeded to skoff every Mussel and every last drop of that amazing sauce. Manny called Nathan (the Greek) who was responsible for making the dish, out and told said, “Natasha doesn’t like your Mussels!” Calmly and to the point Nathan looks at me and says, “Talk to me.” To his obvious relief I hadn’t him the completely emptied bowl and

Waitangi Day History (from http://ngatamaoteao.com/) Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand. It is a public holiday held each year on 6 February to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, on that date in 1840.
The signing of the treaty was not commemorated until 1934. Prior to that date, most celebrations of New Zealand’s founding as a colony were marked on 29 January, the date on which William Hobson arrived in the Bay of Islands. In 1932, Governor-General Lord Bledisloe and his wife had purchased and presented to the nation the run-down house of James Busby, where the treaty was signed. The Treaty House and grounds were made a public reserve, which was dedicated on 6 February 1934. The event is considered by some to be the first Waitangi Day, although celebrations were not yet held annually. At the time, it was the most representative meeting of Maori ever held. Attendees included the Maori King and thousands of Settlers. A Sound Argument The tradition of musical entertainment has helped form the fibre of culture and community in all reaches of the world for generations. It moves us emotionally spiritually and physically, and has the power to gloss over diversities by uniting us in a common voice. The power of a song to resurrect a memory otherwise lost cannot be denied irrespective of your preference of genre or belief. We are all touched by music and some of us are blessed to be able to make it a life purpose. The ability to make a respectable living from the proceeds of such a career choice relies of course on the premise that people seek that emotional injection in their lives. Spending a night in front of a band immersed in the moment and leaving your troubles of the time at the door is therapy we all need in our busy lives. In recent years the options available to live music tragics have become fewer and we could point the finger at any number of factors. The venues that are persevering though do so with the ever present spectre of liquor licensing looming with that dreaded decibel meter in hand. Has a venue’s right to responsibly entertain their patrons been curtailed by legislation to the point where the art is gone? Is the emerging generation missing out on something that we have foolishly taken for granted all these years? If the noticeable trend of the past decade or two is extrapolated, the future for live music looks grim. Last year the QLD state government opened the debate for the reform of noise restrictions on licensed premises by releasing the Red Tape Reduction discussion paper inviting submissions from all stakeholders in the industry. Part of this discussion paper noted universal sentiment from government and industry stakeholders that legislative restrictions on licensed venues’ noise levels are prohibitive to business development and subsequently adversely affecting tourism. Hallelujah says the musicians and licensees...!! The government is actually admitting that the draconian approach to noise regulation we have
been suffering through for years now has to be rectified. Reducing the time and resources devoted to the kind of regulatory compliance forming the ball and chain around the ankles of many of our favourite haunts is designed to allow live entertainment to once again be a vibrant part of the prosperity of these venues. So what is the solution for Mr and Mrs Resident living nearby, who up until now have been the ones picking up the phone at the slightest murmur coming from the doors of the longstanding music venue up the road? The reality is that the balance of respective rights of residents, musicians and venue owners has been out of kilter for too long. You can take any view you like but there is no denying that we have all been part of the problem and we all need to realise that any universally acceptable solution will require some compromise from all corners of the debate. There are the musicians who have refused to turn down because it’s a rock show man! Or the venues who fail to responsibly design their establishment to effectively contain the noise that they inevitably will make. And then there are the residents who feel it is their civic duty to become the serial complainant who effectively gets a venue shut down whereby destroying valuable jobs and economic contribution and wonder why their property prices are stagnating. We all have a stake in this debate no matter which corner we stand in and we can all benefit from a common sense approach to noise regulation reform. There is no reason why an amicable outcome cannot be reached for the common good of the economic sustainability of the communities in which we choose to live. The Australian Live Entertainment Reform Thinktank (ALERT) submitted a detailed proposal to the QLD state government in response to the section of the Red Tape Reduction Discussion Paper dealing with noise restrictions last year. The ALERT proposal outlined inherent logistical
problems with current policy with the aim of explaining in more detail the prohibitive nature of these regulation methods with respect to business prosperity. Additionally, the proposal recommended key changes to policy which has to date been far from universally beneficial. ALERT based its recommendations not just on personal opinion, but through consultation with many industry stakeholders through its Facebook forum page and online petition on Change. org which has to date received almost eight thousand signatures highlighting some very strong public sentiment toward this cause. ALERT is proud to be working in conjunction with The Bizz Gold Coast magazine in its advocacy and support of the local music scene. This regular column will be dedicated to keeping readers up to date with developments in the policy reform process and to also address concerns of anyone who finds themselves a part of this debate. THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Director: Martin Scorsese Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner Classification: R18+ (High Impact Sex Scenes and Drug Use) Review by Peter Gray Based on the life of Jordan Belfort, an illicit stockbroker who scammed millions of dollars off of clueless clients and lived like a king buoyed up by every depravity imaginable, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ isn’t exactly a biopic (Belfort’s rags to riches tale is barely touched on) nor is it an apparent exercise in glamourizing his crooked exploits; above all else this film is uproariously funny and further proof that Martin Scorsese, even at 71 years of age, is in complete control of organising excessive chaos. With the film bypassing his youth, we first meet Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) as an eager young 20-something working as a stockbroker at an established Wall Street firm. Starting off relatively humble he is taken under the wing of Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey), a particularly brash broker who encourages him to adopt a lifestyle of sex and substances in order to succeed, imparting such wisdom as masturbation twice a day is essential, cocaine will help you dial the phone faster, and the client’s money is not your concern, your own money is. Not long after receiving his licence the Wall Street crash of 1987, known as Black Monday, takes place and his life is seemingly ruined in an instant. Deterring his wife (Cristin Milioti) from pawning her engagement ring and considering work as a stock boy, Jordan snags another opportunity at a low-rent boiler room in Long Island that deals in penny stocks. Quickly schooling his inexperienced co-workers on how to wring large commissions out of even the lowliest stocks, Jordan assembles a crew (many of whom are just as consciencefree as him) and dubs his brand ‘Stratton Oakmont’, moving his way up the economic food chain until he and his cronies are all making too much money for their limited intelligence to handle. Once Scorsese and screenwriter Terence Winter have established the mindset of these men, the film dives headfirst into wicked decadence with every sexual penchant, drug preference, and lowly concept of fun detailed in graphic fashion. The film arrives here with an R18+ classification and these scenes alone are justification enough as these ultimately nightmarish sequences of drug-fuelled, sex-laced orgies are presented with such vigour yet, at the same time, a grotesque hollowness. Excessive really is the best word to describe ‘Wolf…’, it’s running time of 179 minutes is bloated as is, but that seems to be the point. Scorsese isn’t high fiving these guys, he’s highlighting how draining and absurd a lifestyle can be when your goal is to live like a trust fund frat boy. Scenes of DiCaprio and his cohorts as they manically scream into their phones, argue amongst each other, and openly do drugs in the office (not to mention group sex participation during work hours) would have you believe that’s how it actually was, but everything here exists in a heightened reality and the constant repetition of these boys’ misbehaving is simply Scorsese wearing us down to ride home the fact that all this frivolity is far from fun. One feature that never wavers though is Leonardo DiCaprio. I dare say this is the best he has ever been, delivering a performance that’s vanity free and, surprisingly, comically consistent (who knew the man was so funny?) Reminding me of a young DeNiro, the numerous extended speeches and emotional rants he delivers are spot-on in their fusion of cocky showman and rampaging amnesiac. One sequence that serves as a testament to this is an uproariously prolonged moment where Belfort is doped up to the point of near paraplegia on qualudes (his drug of choice) that he renders himself unable to leave a country club and enter his car. This scene is particularly extended and feels like it shouldn’t work, but Scorsese’s persistence and DiCaprio’s dedication somehow make it successful. Page 22

In addition to DiCaprio, a stellar support cast has been rounded up with Jonah Hill a specific standout as Donnie Azoff, an easily influenced salesman who latches onto Jordan in the early stages of his career once he realises how much money can be earned in stockbroking. With his husky New York-Jewish accent and a smashing set of (fake) pearly white teeth, Hill once again showcases his effortless comic timing portraying Donnie as a spoilt child in an adult world. McConaughey’s screen time is brief but memorable all the same, Rob Reiner has a heap of fun as Jordan’s fiery father, Kyle Chandler lends a welcome air of authority as the FBI agent looking to catch Jordan out, and Jean Dujardin changes his tune considerably from when we last saw him in ‘The Artist’ as a Swiss banker eager to get into just as much trouble with Jordan’s band of misfits. One of the big finds here though is Gold Coast native Margot Robbie who simply shines as Naomi LaPaglia, the stunning trophy wife Jordan kicks his first wife to the curb for. If you weren’t aware of Robbie’s Australian roots, you’d swear she was a New York local as her Brooklyn accent is flawless, and though in a film dominated by men the presence of any woman will be noticed, Robbie shines even brighter as she bravely tackles a role that on the surface may only require the bare essentials but underneath reveals a strength and sexuality that very few actresses would be willing to deliver. After working for so long ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ once again proves Martin Scorsese is never void of new ideas, its actually quite comforting to know the kind of tricks he still has up his sleeve, with this dizzying effort a clever condemnation of the behaviour many believe it glorifies. My rating 4.5/5 (The big bad Wolf is so, so good)
JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT
Director: Kenneth Branagh Cast: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh, Keira Knightley Classification: M (Violence and Infrequent Coarse Language) Review by Peter Gray Taking a relatively old-fashioned approach to the espionage thriller genre, ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ is surprising in its antigritty mentality as it feels very much like the Harrison Ford ‘Jack Ryan’ movie of the 90s. It’s a movie without a lot of flash; it’s not concerned with overly-technical jargon or death defying stunts, it’s pretty standard in terms of texture and spirit. And whilst it’s somewhat refreshing, it’s also the quality that stifles the film too as it doesn’t raise enough to revitalise the genre. The first act of the film speeds through Jack Ryan’s origin at an alarming rate with a durable Chris Pine in the lead role following on from previous incarnates Alec Baldwin (1990’s ‘The Hunt for Red October’), Harrison Ford (1992’s ‘Patriot Games’ and 1994’s
‘Clear and Present Danger’) and Ben Affleck (2002’s ‘The Sum of All Fears’). After witnessing the September 11th attacks whilst attending university in London, he joins the military where he is involved in a near-fatal helicopter crash. During his rehabilitation in hospital he’s tended to by doctor-in-training-come-inevitablelove-interest Cathy Muller (Keira Knightley) before being recruited by a veteran CIA operative (Kevin Costner) to work undercover as a financial analyst on Wall Street where he’ll be searching for money going towards terrorism funding. Once Ryan’s back-story is established we cut to him in the present where he is now shacked up with Cathy, who is still clueless as to what he does, and bound for Russia where he’s to investigate the shady scheming of a native banker, Viktor Cheverin (Kenneth Branagh), whom the agency suspect of global terrorism. Whilst the ‘Jack Ryan’ series has always dealt in escapism entertainment it has still managed to do so in a grounded fashion. This latest offering, the first to not be based on a Tom Clancy novel, perhaps asks a bit too much from its audience from the get-go, particularly when Cathy is involved. Knightley does a fine job, her American accent is believable and she handles herself with grace, but her character is poorly handled. After initially thinking Jack is being unfaithful due to his secrecy involving his work, she almost instantly becomes a crucial element in the CIA’s plan to expose Viktor which in turn leads her to act alarmingly cool when put in a life or death situation. The scene I’m referring to is one of the bigger set pieces of the film, and it builds a great deal of tension in a perfectly acceptable manner and, again, Knightley’s performance is fine but you have to accept a lot of these sort of eye-rolling plot manoeuvrings to go along with the film. If you’re willing to do so though, you’ll most likely enjoy, or at least accept, ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ for the far-fetched actioner it is. Jack himself is perhaps written a bit too perfect as a character, think Sherlock Holmes and Ethan Hunt (‘Mission: Impossible’) rolled into one, but Pine makes it work due to his likeable screen presence where he tones down the cockiness of his ‘Star Trek’ character but maintains the confidence and capabilities which he infuses with an ‘everyman’ appeal that truly benefits the character, and the film, overall. Branagh (also on directing duties) doesn’t overplay his Bond-esque villain too much with his relatively thick Russian accent being the only hammy quality, and Costner, who it’s always nice to see on the big screen, brings a welcome cold cynicism to his character that contrasts well to the more eager Jack, and if we see future ‘Jack Ryan’ endeavours – this film clearly hoping to (re)start the franchise – the more use of Costner the better. Though it lacks the theatricality of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ films and the sophistication of the ‘Bourne’ series, ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ at least has enough potential contained within itself to fully explore in subsequent endeavours. My rating 3/5 (A slowish start to a series rife with potential)

Soundwave is a Licensed All Ages Event. 10 Tips for Surviving Soundwave 2014 (Same as BDO tips in case you missed them) 1. WATER! Drink it! Force yourself if you have to, but make sure you drink WATER! 2. SLIP SLOP SLAP SEEK SLIDE! Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek some shade and Slide on some sunnies. You won’t regret it! 3. PREPARE! Study the time table and circle the bands you absolutely want to see, and make sure each person in your party has a
copy, so if you lose each other you’ll know ‘sort of’ the area each will be. Organise meeting places and times with friends beforehand, though odds are someone will be having a great time somewhere and not show. Don’t get annoyed, just accept that’s part of being at a festival. The important thing is the meeting place for the end of the day. 4. KNOW THE GROUNDS! On arrival, walk the entire grounds and familiar yourself with each stage, amenities, bars, food outlets, chill-out areas and medical tents. You’ll be glad you did it when you’re racing from one band to the next. 5. SEE AN UNKNOWN! Just because you haven’t heard of a band before doesn’t mean they’re not worth seeing. 6. PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY! Limited and congested reception only means your texts won’t reach the recipients for four hours, and you probably won’t get through. See point 3 re being prepared, as it is highly likely you won’t be able to reach anyone via phone – if you do manage to get reception, they probably won’t hear the phone. 7. PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY! You’re at an OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVAL! Why would you want to watch such great bands through the screen of your phone?? Watch the bands, listen to the bands and dance or jump around and sing along to the bands. Experience and enjoy the day. Trust that there will 1,000 clips just like the one you ‘would’ have taken on You Tube before you even get home. How many times are you really going to watch it anyway? Only bring out your phone for a few photos for memories and to prove you were there, because we all know if there’s no pics it didn’t happen ;-) 8. DON’T BINGE DRINK! If you’re in the bar queue every ten minutes, you’re going to miss out on some great band time, and you didn’t pay $185 to sit in a bar. Besides, you don’t want a hangover before the sun even sets, and you want to remember the day. We’re not saying don’t drink at all, we’re not total kill-joys ;-) 9. TIME OUT! Take some time out during the day to check out the whole scene, you’ll be amazed at what you see when you’re looking. And it’s easy to be so caught up in the crowds that you miss a bunch of eyeopening and memorable visions. 10. SURVIVAL KIT! When you’ve mastered it, everything you need can actually fit in a good sized bum-bag. Take a couple of panadol (if you’re allowed), a few squares of toilet paper in a small sandwich bag so it stays dry (has come in handy on more than a few occasions), a poncho, your driver licence, and a small stick of deodorant (for the benefit of everyone around you).

Authority Zero – Sean Sellers Q&A Mesa, Arizona’s influential punk veterans AUTHORITY ZERO released their fifth full-length studio album, The Tipping Point via 3wise Records in 2013. Almost two decades of enduring a volatile music industry and countless tours away from friends and family, AUTHORITY ZERO has emerged with one of their best albums to date. Named after the Malcolm Gladwell book, The Tipping Point was recorded with producer Cameron Webb (Pennywise, Social Distortion, Motorhead) at Maple Studios in Orange County, California. Their latest effort pays tribute to their punk rock forefathers while expanding their musical boundaries into unconventional reggae and rock tinges beyond the typical punk rock aesthetics, creating a whirlwind rock album that will undoubtedly take listeners by storm. Eighteen years into their storied career began and AUTHORITY ZERO has seen their fair share of ups-and-downs. After original guitarist and long-time friend Bill Marcks left the band in 2008, members have seemed to come and go, but the band and music has carried on. After the release of their last album, Stories of Survival, guitarist Zach Vogel departed the band to return to his home in Wisconsin for more family time. Shortly after that and with the turn of the New Year in 2011, long-time friend and drummer Jim Wilcox also left the band to pursue other endeavours. At this point, many bands would have folded under the pressure of line-up changes and setbacks, but the rest of the band carried on by inviting new recruits and Amarillo, TX native Brandon Landelius on guitar along with legendary punk drummer, Sean Sellers (Good Riddance, Real McKenzies) on drums to restructure and complete the group. Q. Being a relatively new member to Authority Zero, tell us about how you made the line-up. Was there an audition process, did you know the guys? A. I’ve known them for a long time. I live in Arizona and right after I moved here, they opened up and we just become friends over time. Jason and I were thinking about starting a new band, and it so happened that Jim left, and he said ‘instead of a new band, join this one’!” Q. Congratulations on The Tipping Point, I know it’s still a fairly new release, but any plans for a new album in the near future? A. Basically, we go on tour from tomorrow (1st Feb Aust.) to June, and then to Europe. After that, then we’ll settle down and write a new record. It will be toward the end of 2014. Q. Do you have a personal favourite track on The Tipping Point? A. The Tipping Point! (Q. Yes?) The song The Tipping Point! (laughs) (Q. oh of course! Laughs) That song almost didn’t make the record! We worked on it in preproduction and changed it to the song you hear. We did a one take on drums, no click track, here it is! Then we went and did all the stuff you do to songs and thought, this isn’t very good. Our producer said this was our favourite song in preproduction so pulled the demo out and we all loved it! It’s the most organic song on the record. It was beautiful and there it was. The way music used to be recorded – no click tracks and stuff limiting the feel

With such a great line-up, are there any acts you’re keen to catch on the tour? A. I plan to watch Clutch every single day! They are one of my favourites and their new record is easily my favourite record in years and years. Q. Message for the Qld SW crowd? A. Come and hang out with us, we might be playing early, so come and support us!

of the actual song, and with this one it worked and I was like ooooohhh so good, thank you! Q. How does the band go about writing songs? A. We get in a room and we write together. Jason will have things, Brandon will have things and we’ll sit together and hash them out. You stay up with the current times, Pro Tools and editing but people are now realising that music is becoming stale. Go back and play a song and push record on ¼ inch tape machine and make it something beautiful. I want to go back to that. Of course we record on computers, but I want to be a band in a room and record an album with the band, like we used to. No process involved except for four guys in a room and producer telling you to do it again coz that sucked. You still go in to studio and mike up with computer you know, but if we can do it in a room together and bring back the feel to music is our inevitable goal. Q. That organic sound you’re speaking of seems to be making a resurgence, with vinyl becoming more and more popular again. A. Yes! I played in Real McKenzies for seven years and did seven records, and I also did the merch. When I had vinyl displayed people would come and buy ALL seven releases on vinyl! The resurgence of vinyl is huge. Today people are downloading their tunes, so no CDs and they want something they can look at and hold. Unfortunately what people outside of artists don’t realise is that when you put together this product – it’s a thought process and a piece of art, and when you download it you don’t get to see this cool artwork that somebody did. Album covers meant so much to you as a kid, you identified with it. Q. How about live, is there a particular track you like to play? A. One of the older tracks, from the last record actually, Brick in the Wave. I love playing that song. The old drummer did a double bass part and I do it with one foot and the feel. Fortunately for me it’s the 2nd song in the set and the one that lights me up and gets me through the rest of it. Q. We’re looking forward to catching you at Soundwave 2014, what are you most looking forward to? A. I’ve been to Australia three times; the first time was in the 90s and I walked off the plane and thought, oh shit I’m home! I’ve been here five seconds and I’m home. When I get asked where my favourite place to tour is, Australia is always my answer! I have to say Strapper Island is easily hands down my favourite place in the world – Wow Wow! (Editor: sorry guys, we know there’s no Strapper Island, that’s how I heard
California-based emo-rockers Finch, originally called Numb, include vocalist Nate Barcalow, guitarists Randy Strohmeyer and Alex Linares, bassist Derek Doherty and drummer Alex Pappas. The 2001 four-song EP, “Falling into Place”, was the band’s first release for Drive-Thru and sold over 6,000 copies in just its first three months of release. That set up and well-received full-length, “What is to Burn”, which appeared the following year, produced by Mark Tromino (Blink-182, Midtown). Finch immediately hit the road with RX Bandits and spent that summer on the Warped Tour. With new drummer Mark Allen on board, “Say Hello to Sunshine” dropped in summer 2005, featuring a considerably heavier and slightly experimental sound. The band toured behind it through the end of the year with acts such as Head Automatica, HiM, and Skindred. By February 2006, Finch had gone on an “indefinite break.” Some members of the band went on to join the Sound of Animals Fighting, along with members of RX Bandits, the Authumns and Circa Survive. Q. In 2006 Finch went on an “indefinite break”, what happened? A. That was our first break up. I think we were all kind of worn-out, and just the dynamic of the band and the touring scenario with the band – we were touring with bands we didn’t like so much. It was right after the Sunshine record and I think it was confusing to a lot of people at the time who couldn’t take the change. It was really hard to adjust to playing the shows and we’re like weirdo’s and ‘Fuck! What are we supposed to do?’ We’re playing new songs which everyone wanted for the second record and then they wanted the same sound as previous! So, that and one person in particular who isn’t playing with us anymore was causing fucking turmoil between the rest of us. And it’s hard watching them seemingly fuck everything you’ve worked so hard on, so we split
up for a while. But we maintained our friendship and then we regrouped a few years later, and for some reason it fell apart. But something about this record has rejuvenated us! We’re almost like crazy brothers – have our little spats and then realise we can’t be without each other for too long. We’re real reactionary! Q. Where did the name Finch come from; the original name was ‘Numb’? A. I guess it was a four piece at the time and one of my high-school punk bands was fading out and I kinda knew they (Numb) were the best band with the best singer and best sound. Word travels fast and they said ‘come and jam with us’ and I thought, what’s the harm in jamming with a few people!? (laughs) They were super cool and we just started jamming and in the first practice we wrote our first song together! We decided we should change the name; we didn’t even talk about me being the band, it just happened! I didn’t want it to sound like ‘anything’ and just said ‘let’s call it Finch’ – it kinda sounds ambiguous you know. I had made friends with people at Drive-Thru and people like New Found Glory, and would always show them demos of some of my bands and they were never good enough. Then I called one day and said I think I’ve got it! We packed upn the gear in the minivan and we played in a little rehearsal station up in the Valley of LA, and they were just clapping after every song and we thought, Holy Shit! It happened!
Q. “What is to Burn X” is the new ‘live’ album, Are you guys planning on writing on any new material? A. Yeah! We’re actually working on it right now; just came from rehearsal actually! We’re writing tonnes of songs; there’s like over 40 songs right now. We’re trying to find a vision for it and once we find what we’re all really happy with we can put it together. We all have such different opinions. It’s like each Finch is a different colour and we come together we turn to black (laughs). Q. The press release calls you “Emo Rockers”, how do you describe your genre? A. For us we don’t sound like anyone. It all sounds like noise (laughs) here and there, but I don’t know, we’re an alternative band if anything. If I had my say I would rather not have any genre type coz we tend to bounce around quite a bit. Age and taste takes over. Whatever you feel like doing you know, and abiding to one thing is too hard. To be safe we’ll say alternative (laughing). Q. How did the Soundwave Tour come up? A. We figured out we wanted to tour and put whatever were doing away to focus on Finch. We did Soundwave 2009 and it was the best tour we’d ever done, so it was a no-brainer! It was fucking great! We’ve got a great agent who went to Soundwave, and we couldn’t be more happy to be part of that festival. It’s really fucking cool! Q. Who are most looking forward to catching on the SW tour / playing alongside? A. Placebo is really cool, and Rocket from the Crypt! I’m excited to see them and obviously Green Day, I just hope they play some of the stuff I grew up with. Q. Is there a standout show from your last Australian tour? A. It was the first time we’d ever been to Australia and it was a huge shock. The reception was insane! I remember the last time we played - I think it was in Perth. We were up against Nine Inch Nails and we thought oh fuck nobody’s gonna come watch us (laughs). Who would have thought that people would give a fuck and it was a crazy chill, it was great! People were singing the words and dancing it was fucking cool! Q. Do you have a message for the Queensland Soundwave punters? A. We can’t wait to get back!
The Porkers – Pete Cooper Q&A From their beginnings in Newcastle in 1987, The Porkers have brought their 'wall of noise' to festival stages around the globe. With a syncopated rhythm section and a fat brass sound they were at the spearhead of the worldwide '3rd Wave of Ska' in the late '90's. Not just the skanky Jamaican rhythm, but a melting pot of deeper reggae, fused with funk, punk rock and metal riffs, - and sometimes all in the same song! Simply ad beer to this overly energetic stage show and what you have is the party starter band, renowned and revered by fans and musos alike. Their 1994 debut album 'Grunt!' was described as "A masterpiece of adult-only ska brilliance" by Sydney's Drum Media. 1998's 'Hot Dog Daiquiri' was "Fucking Awesome!" according to Dicky Barrett of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Tracks Magazine said in 2001 on the release of 'Time Will Tell' that - "These guys would turn your Granny's funeral into a dance-fest!" Appearing at the Vans Warped Tour in the USA in 1999, Rolling Stone magazine noted The Porkers as a highlight and said "-sounded like a cross between The Blasters and UB40." In 2004 The Porkers catchy ‘Swinging Like Tiger Woods’ single foretold Tiger Woods' indiscretion by 3 years. And of their 2007 release 'This Is The Porkers', Triple J's Sarah Howells said - " - took me completely by surprise, The Porkers have still got it better than ever!" 2009 saw the release of the 'Persistence Is Futile' DVD - from Australia's most persistent ska band! The last few years has seen The Men of Pork resting firmly on their laurels, gathering momentum for the next assault, and the two founding members, Pete Cooper (vocals) & Phil Barnard (sax) have assembled a fresh line up to outdo all others. Joined by long time Porkers guitarist Dave Power, as well as Dave Morris on Bass Guitar (who formerly did time with Cranky, and Pre_Shrunk), and on Drums, Scott Chapman (ON Inc. , Machine Gun Fellatio), plus an all-star
brass section and special guests will see that Porkers noise thumping Soundwave louder than ever! Q. Newcastle is known for producing some great musical talent; tell us about the live music scene there now? A. It seems to be quite good, I don’t get out and experience it as much as I used to, but there’s still a few good venues promoting original music. It’s flourishing the way Newcastle does. Q. It’s been a while since your last release, are there any plans for a new album? A. ummm… not at the moment, the main plan is to just get a new line-up ready for Soundwave and punch out some good professional shows and see where it goes from there. Q. Tell us how the name “The Porkers” came about? A. Well… do you know our original name – The Pork Hunts!? We were only playing a party, but kinda kept playing and realised we couldn’t go on with that name any longer, and it became just The Porkers. You know there isn’t another band in the world called The Porkers!? (laughs) Q. The party you’re referring to, was that the demolition party we’ve read about? A. (laughs) Yes, the house we were living in was
ear-marked for demolition and the last weekend we had a party! And Newcastle being what it was at the time – a cross selection of skinheads, punks, head-bangers, surfers, you name it, they were they were – it was crazy! I suppose that first party set the theme for the band for the next 27 years. Q. Talk us through your genre A. It’s always been hard as we’ve always been seen as a Ska band, though it’s more a bastardised version of Ska (laughs), and with us there’s so many other musical influences – surf, funk, reggae and sometimes we play all of those in the one song! I suppose you could use a term I cloned a few years ago – Reggae Metal. If you look up our song called “Huntsman” on the last release – it’s the song on the Soundwave Compilation – that song is definitely Reggae Metal; fast Reggae Metal. Q. Do you have a personal favourite track to play live? A. Oh there’s many, but probably Skankin Carpark Blues. It’s always been a live favourite; it just works live and a hell of a lot of fun. It’s not too long, so when it’s over it leaves you wanting more. Q. The GC is facing problems with noise level restrictions and red tape, and lack of purpose live music venues. Are you experiencing these issues? A. It’s very irritating, and it’s caused a lot of problems in Sydney. The Annandale Hotel has fallen to noise restrictions, and that’s sad. I don’t know there’s a lot that can be done or that I can do something about it. It’s sad and it’s happening. The music industry has to work out alternative ways to do it. I wish I did but I don’t have the answers. We played the last Saturday night at The Playroom! It was always a good venue and that was really sad. It’s still sad driving past it and seeing a car park and wondering…why!? Q. Aside from the Porkers, we understand you have your own business? A. Yeah I’m a small business owner – Hard Core Logo. It’s a screen printing business.

Let’s talk playing and experiencing Soundwave 2014 A. 20 years this year since the release of our debut album, so it’s a great year to play Soundwave! The 20 year cycle has circled (laughs). Out of ninetysomething bands that are playing, it’s a big brain melt. How am I going to see all these good bands!? And what’s the priority? Rocket from the Crypt! It’s 2014 and The Porkers are playing a festival that Crypt is on – it’s a bit of a mind fuck! (laughs) Q. Message for Brisbane Soundwave 2014 Festivalgoers? A. Look out The Porkers are coming!

The Gold Coast is home to many musicians from every genre, and as we watch the shift change again to bring back the live music scene to what we knew in the 80’s and early 90’s, there are Open Mic and Jam nights appearing all over the city. From seasoned muso’s to those wanting to get a bit of experience in front of a crowd Open, Mic and Jam nights are a great way to spend an evening for artists and audience alike. More and more venues are taking on the special sessions as musicians network, practice and perform for a music-appreciating audience as they enjoy a relaxing drink and dinner with friends and family. Summer’s biggest line-up just got a whole lot hotter! Future Music and Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that one of the most influential and ground-breaking artists in modern music, Pharrel Williams, will tour Australia in March as a headlining addition to 2014’s Future Music Festival in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. As Pharrell will be busy attending the Oscars (where he is nominated for “Best Original Song”) during the Brisbane and Perth festivals, fans will instead be treated to two special sideshows. The 40 year old was behind the two biggest tracks of 2013: Robin Thicke’s gigantic ‘Blurred Lines’ and Daft Punk’s mammoth ‘Get Lucky’. With millions of copies sold, Williams holds the honour of being only the 12th artist in US Billboard chart history to simultaneously hold both the number one and two positions.
