ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600
Helensvale Library Community and Cultural Centre
Q&A with Jonathon Webb How did your career in motorsports begin? “It began very early in life with my love of cars and my competitive nature. I was an Australian title holder in BMX as a kid, and then moved in to motorsport when I was 18, in the Porsche Cup.” What inspired you to become a race car driver? “It’s something that’s in the blood. It’s certainly in the family, with my dad Steve being a successful driver in sports cars throughout the 70s and 80s.” What is your career highlight? “Career highlight for me is my unexpected win at the 2010 Sydney Telstra 500. I started 21st on the grid, and in the pouring rain kept the car on the track and ended up winning. It was very special.” If you weren’t a race car driver, what would you be? “It would definitely have something to do with cars, anything I could do to earn a living whilst working with and on cars.” What do you love about the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600? “I really enjoy street circuits, and the GC600 is one of the best. I love the chicanes, and the commitment needed to put together a fast lap.” In three words, how would you describe the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 track? “Fast, Close, Fun!” When you are not racing cars, what is your favourite thing to do on the Gold Coast? “I love being on the water, enjoying the sun, sand and surf of the Gold Coast.” What is your most memorable moment on track? “Racing against Jim Richards in my first year of motorsport in the Porsche Cup. He’s a hero of mine, and a motorsport icon so that was pretty special, and a bit surreal.” Macintosh Island Access Notice Access to Macintosh Island will change from September 12 to November 12 to allow for the safe construction of the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. Whilst every effort has been made to accommodate the normal walking pattern of local residents accessing this area, during this period there will be instances where diversion will need to occur. Ticket Sales Tickets to the event can be purchased online at www. ticketek.com.au or calling 132 849, or at any Ticketek outlet (there are three on the Gold Coast – the Gold Coast Arts Centre, the Gold Coast Convention Centre and the newsagency on Orchid Avenue in Surfers Paradise). Helensvale Library is a community and cultural centre, and a recent guided tour through the incredible premises has left The Bizz GC in awe of the facility. We’ve been trying to let you know since the first edition that libraries just aren’t what they used to be, and the cliché of only reading or borrowing a book and being “Shushed” all the time are certainly no longer the case. Ukulele lessons, Cooking, Photography, Creative Arts and even Yoga are all available at your local library, just to name a few. Today, we are focused on Helensvale. The $23m property is worth every single penny, with the investment being for all Gold Coast residents to enjoy and utilise for many years to come. Venue Management Officer, Kristian Stenholm was the perfect host to walk us through the centre with his abundance of knowledge, and was very obviously an avid supporter of all the arts. We began our tour with the band rehearsal room and recording studio. You read that right! This ‘Library’ has a band rehearsal room that has had acoustic treatment, and even has the whole backline provided if needed – drum kit, bass and guitar amps (good ones!), piano and electric keyboard, for only $20 per hour. If you want to record a single, an EP, a radio ad, a jingle, anything really, the recording studio is set up with state-of-the-art equipment, and there is an isolation room for vocalists. They have an in-house engineer, or you can use own, and the cost is minimal. Contact the Library for a cost-sheet, we can guarantee you’ll find it more than reasonable! Everything has been thought of, and this studio is connected to the Auditorium (which we’ll get to), which means you can put on a show at this Library, record it live and leave the venue with a full recording. Musicians! Go to the Gig Guide Week 2 in this mag for your chance to win a three hour package of rehearsal time! The Auditorium! This flat-to-stage, black box theatre seats 200, or the seating can be retracted in to the wall for open event spaces. Equipped with full lighting rig (and latest LED) that is cool, quiet and includes movers; projector screen, 4 stage risers, loading bay and things we didn’t even understand. This is a space that can be used for any number of events - theatre, dance, video clip launch, concerts, seminars, etc. And, don’t forget this auditorium is connected to the recording studio, so you can record your event and take it home with you. There are two dressing rooms, both with fridge and microwave, an incredible green room with its own foyer, and all have communications with the auditorium. Selling of alcohol is not permitted, though you can serve food and beverages. This is made easy with huge kitchen facilities. There is a no naked flame policy, though heating is easy with the microwaves. Fridges and a servery to make entertaining easy, and the servery doubles up as a box office. Everything has been thought of! And if you think it all sounds too costly to utilise, think again. Contact the library for a price list and be surprised. Dragging us out of the auditorium, we discovered the Media Lab which has everything you could possibly need, including a 3D printer. The Multi-Purpose room can be used for Art, group gatherings, conferences, anything you would need a multi-purpose room for.
Not Just a Library!
Another door opens, and we walk in to a Dance Studio! Again, everything has been thought of, from the mirrored walls, the floors, the bar, speakers, projector, cordless mics and controlled air-con. Catering for all forms of dance, of course including ballet, this is where you can enjoy a Zumba class, a Yoga class and a host of other things, and yes you can hire this room for a minimal cost. The Helensvale Library (community and cultural centre) is waiting on certification for their 5 star energy rating. Rainwater is used for WC, solar for hot water and electrics, and there is a weather station on the roof which opens and closes the louvres as well as controlling the fans for heating/cooling. A mini amphitheatre outside that hosts Sunday Sessions with live band and sausage sizzle and can be used for many things, is just another example of how this ‘Library’ is not ‘just a library’. Of course, there is a very modern and comfortable space for reading books, listening to audio books and music, and a kids’ area. You can study, write, read and borrow. It is worth making a visit and seeing what Helensvale Library has to offer you – there is something for absolutely everyone. Located at the corner of Sir John Overall Drive and Lindfield Road, Helensvale (you can’t miss it) and their phone number is 07 5581 1625. Things to consider doing at Helensvale Library over the next two weeks include: Linking You Locally: Saturday 14th September 9:00am to 1:00pm Presented by Helensvale Library and Medicare Local, there will be over 40 community stalls, face painting, petting zoo, local talent and performances, workshops and more. Matt Hollywood
Australia’s most recognised comedy entertainer and magician, Matt Hollywood, spoke candidly with The Bizz GC about his life as an entertainer, the turmoils of recent times and plans for new endeavours. Internationally in demand, Matt Hollywood has worked with many industry greats, from Rove to Robbie Williams, and has entertained the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Shane Warne, Pamela Anderson, Seinfeld and even Jerry Lewis. And if you don’t think those names are big, how about The Queen!? Matt is proud to consider himself as a Gold Coast Local. Hailing from Melbourne we joked about how you need to have lived here for more than half your life to be considered a local. With only a few years to reach that status we agreed he was close enough, Matt saying “I just love it here and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s just amazing.” We asked Matt how he came to be a ‘magician’ and learned that his great grandfather was a big magician at the turn of the century (1910’s – 20’s) – The Great Stirlini, who worked with the master himself, Houdini! Matt tells us, “He was always performing when I was a kid, and was always showing us those amazing magic tricks at Christmas parties. I was the only one that took it on, and have been doing it since I was 5 or 6.” Matt has three siblings and says, “One brother is the COO of Country Road, another brother who is a doctor and my sister is a medical advisor. I’m a Magician!” he laughed. Being a full-time entertainer hasn’t always been the case though, as Matt explains, “The hardest trick I’ve had to do is turn a Page 8 www.thebizzgc.com.au
hobby that is a passion in to a business.” In Melbourne, Matt was a police officer for 10 years, “I was a highway patrol officer and I loved it”. During this time he was also working as a magician on the side, honing his skills and his performance to be what he envisioned and to the success it is today. Relocating to the Gold Coast, he married here, “To a beautiful Gold Coast girl and we had two beautiful princesses”. The proud dad tells us how both his daughters are already doing magic, “They’re doing levitation and all! Both are destined to be in the entertainment industry, the eldest of them (7) already singing and playing keyboards, and going to be a Delta Goodrem.” Always performing, Matt explains that he does 300 shows with around 400 flights a year across the globe, including conferences, corporate events, gala dinners, private parties, weddings, awards nights, regular television appearances and more. He says, “I’m always performing, well until my recent divorce where I went from having everything in the world I could hope for, to literally entering a nightmare that near destroyed me overnight." Still in Family Court, Matt is cautious about his words saying, “I had an extremely beautiful wife and unfortunately things didn’t work out” adding, “when the story comes out, and it will come out, people will be shocked.” “Being in show business has helped me get through the last 16 months. It’s been heavy, and even in a situation like this, the show must go on. My kids have become my priority, and the good thing is it’s slowly getting better.”
TV appearances and live shows is the crux of what Matt Hollywood does, both nationally and internationally. “What I’m doing now, because of recent events, is focus energies on a regular local show on the Gold Coast, which I’ll nail very soon!” In keeping with ‘The Show Must Go On’ attitude, Matt is currently speaking to a couple local venues about a residency show. A great night out for locals and tourists, he is working on a dinner package show that will feature Las Vegas illusions, special effects and of course will incorporate the brilliant sense of (clean) humour he is so well known for. He tells us, “I have a lot of illusions that even other known magicians don’t know how they’re done!” adding, “Card tricks and rabbits are the old days, now-a-days it’s all about mind-blowing stuff – melting forks in other people’s hands, levitating plates on a table in front of everyone. Blowing people’s minds is magic today.” Apart from the unique illusions and his huge success, we asked what differentiates Matt Hollywood from other magicians and why we’d want to go to see his show. His answer, “What differentiates me from other entertainers is that my shows are clean, classy and have Wow factor. You have the feeling of being amazed and laugh so much your jaw hurts!” Aiming for a Christmas opening, dates will be announced soon. As well as a local residency show, Matt Hollywood is planning a couple of amazing stunts and tells us of one where he will be locked, shackled, chained and in a strait jacket, hung upside down over Sundale Bridge and only have 30 seconds to escape before the rope burns through and he plummets 100 feet in to the water. (You know someone’s a local when they call it Sundale Bridge and not Southport Bridge) “I’ve got a couple of really cool stunts coming up soon.” Ending our time with Matt Hollywood, his parting words were, “I’m still smiling and what I realise at the end of the day is I love what I do. I have two beautiful kids I love with all of my heart, and the Gold Coast is best place in the world to live.” http://www.matthollywood.com

WIN! Movie tickets
Swell 13th and 22nd of September
Rush Director: Ron Howard Featuring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara Country of Origin: US/ UK Genre: Drama/ Action From Academy Award winning director Ron Howard, set against the golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the fast paced, action packed and exhilarating true story of one of the greatest rivals the sport has ever witnessed - James Hunt versus Niki Lauda, and their illustrious Formula 1 racing teams, McLaren versus Ferrari. Privileged, charismatic and handsome English playboy, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) could not be more different from his reserved and methodical opponent, Austrian born Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). Rush follows their chequered personal lives both on and off the track and charts their rivalry from its inception in Formula 3. Here they competed viciously against each other until Lauda's superior business acumen and surgeon like precision behind the wheel propelled him all the way to Formula 1; eventually landing him the number one spot at Ferrari. However it was not long before unruly golden boy James Hunt fought his way into Formula 1, and into the hearts of a nation, dramatically seizing the world championship from Lauda and proving to the critics, and more importantly himself, that there was real substance beneath his stylish exterior. Polar opposites pitted against each other in the most dangerous sport in the world, Hunt and Lauda were pushed to the breaking point of their physical and psychological endurance.
Tension is perhaps best enjoyed in the appreciation of creative diversity and difference. This is contemporaneously true of both the observer and the observed. To this end art, and its harbingers, provide a forum to which all and sundry are invited to participate. The eleventh instalment of the Swell Sculpture Festival, Queensland’s largest outdoor sculpture festival, is upon us and promises to continue its customary offering of high quality evocative artworks and boundless opportunities for community engagement. Over a ten day period beginning on the Thirteenth of September (Through to the 22nd), the Coastline of the Gold Coast’s Currumbin Beach will be furnished with an inspiringly diverse collection of Sculptures and activities that confidently reflect and indeed affect the local culture and lifestyle. From humble and ambitious beginnings in 2002 the festival has established itself as an impressive assembly of passion, planning and execution that has seen its patronage increase from a healthy 6000 in its first year to pushing over 200,000 in its most recent addition. Creative endowment and its intangible allure are difficult to quantify but attendance numbers such as these go a long way in revealing the true relevance of art and its locus as a cultural currency. The founding, and current, Festival Director and Curator Natasha Edwards is not only passionate about the creative process itself but also the significance of art as a societal imperative “It is important to nourish cultural capacity at every opportunity”. This is a powerful message that is further augmented by Edward’s belief that it is vital “[To Build] stronger communities through the arts”. Despite the challenge of changing milieus both financial and environmental Edwards’ unselfish yet determined focus continues to develop and maintain the Festival’s substantial momentum “Anyone can have an idea but someone has to make it happen”. The curatorial scope of the Swell Festival is creatively unrestricted and as such both embraces and encourages the varying diverse practices and methods of its artists, Edwards eagerly declares “Creative risks are important”. The consequent autonomy bestowed in nourishing creative development accords a freedom to the participating artists that ensures all works will be a true rendering of the creator’s intended message. A particularly unique emphasis of the festival is the importance it places on community involvement. This is principally achieved by the numerous activities provided that include artist talks, Twilight Sculpture Walks, Children’s workshops and access to Swell Smalls Gallery. In addition to ensuring that all manner of evocative works are on display it is difficult not to be impressed by the determined attention the festival places on promoting the very simple ideal of advancing the impetus of art, sculpture or otherwise, as a legitimate undertaking for those of all ages. Pursuant to this ideology the directors of swell have established rich relationships with many of the surrounding area schools, emerging artists, indigenous groups and various community programs. Celebrating and promoting creative collaboration is perhaps the most essential mandate of the Festival. This is perhaps best evidenced by the Festival’s newly formed partnership the Brisbane based Urban Art Projects which has seen the inclusion of international participants such as the iconic contemporary Chinese artist Liu Yonggang and renowned Belgian Sculptor George Culliver. Collaboration, however, doesn’t exist solely between artists. The congress between the audience and the work’s themselves remains

Sculpture Festival Pacific Parade, Currumbin - Open All Hours perhaps, the most salient relationship of all. There is no finality in the creation of art, much less in its appraisal. One can visit upon a piece of work multiple times, each time occasioning decidedly varying resolutions. Art, it is said, is never finished - only abandoned. This is also true for the witnessing of art. The growing prestige of the Festival has also facilitated vital funding relationships with the City of Gold Coast, Arts Queensland, Tourism and Events Queensland, The Neumann Benevolent Foundation among other state and local corporate sponsors. Families, Art enthusiasts, curious folk and anyone in between should all find occasion to ambulate along the majesty that is the Currumbin coastline while revelling in the knowledge they are moving within and around an outdoor contemporary art gallery of the highest order. The clever employment of evening illumination should prove to be particularly dramatic. The Swell Sculpture Festival is one of those rare events that enjoy the ability to simultaneously challenge, enrich, entertain and empower not only devotees of contemporary art but the broader community as a whole. With a dedicated staff and over 70 volunteers this year’s instalment (no pun intended) promises to be the most exciting yet. Those that have an existing relationship with the Art’s both fine and contemporary will find an enriching array of quality evocative works. Others that simply wish to entertain a curiosity will be rewarded with a unique experience that goes far beyond a pleasant diversion. Local tip – If you are interested in witnessing the LIVE construction of a feature sculpture by international artist Georges Cuvillier, you can do so from the 2nd. This is a rare opportunity to gain insight into a Sculptor’s creative Journey. The Swell Sculpture Festival is held between 13th and 22nd of September on Pacific Parade, Currumbin and is open all hours so you can enjoy the sculpture at any time. Emily Jade joins Flan to get your day started on Hot Tomato
1029 Hot Tomato has welcomed back Emily Jade O’Keeffe, who has joined co-host Sean Flanagan on the station’s Breakfast Show Flan and Emily weekdays from 5am. Emily Jade was part of the station’s breakfast show at launch in August 2003 and spent almost two years at Hot Tomato helping build the station reputation before heading north to Brisbane to launch Nova. EJ also had a stint at Triple M but more recently has spent the last couple of years on her biggest accomplishment, being a mum for her daughter Millie. Deciding to return home to the Gold Coast and to 1029 Hot Tomato, Emily says, “Almost ten years to the day, I am thrilled to be welcomed back into the Hot Tomato family. I’ve created a family of my own now and they call the Gold Coast home, so being back at Hot Tomato is the icing on the cake.” Program Director, David Rymer commented, “We are delighted to have EJ back at the station that gave her a break back when the station launched.” Currently the new Breakfast Team are on the search for the Gold Coast’s worst kitchen in the ‘Flan & Emily Jade My Kitchen Sucks’ promotion. One lucky Gold Coaster will win a brand new kitchen worth $25,000 including app licences, thanks to the wonderful guys at Gold Coast Creative Kitchens, on Friday 13th September, a date that will be lucky for someone. Plus, if you are in need of some extra cash, be listening to Flan & Emily Jade’s $1,000 Cash Quiz at 7:10am each weekday! If you don’t already, wake up to Flan and Emily on 1029 Hot Tomato every weekday morning!

Goat Track Theatre Co
The Bizz GC is so pleased to be continually finding new things for our locals to participate in all the time. This week we discovered Goat Track Theatre Company and if you have young or adolescent children then this is a wonderful opportunity for you learn more about a group that can entertain them, as well as build social skills and of course arts skills. If you’re thinking this is just another drama school, think again! This program is all about “You first, drama after!” and is literally for everyone. From Prep right through highschool; whether your child is already a natural performer and you want to give them the best start in the industry, to perhaps wanting to find an outlet to ‘channel’ your child’s energy, or you simply want to help boost their confidence, Goat Track Theatre Co has the resources, experience and programs to accomplish the goals. Directors, Andrew Wright and Louise Bahnson are both are both qualified teachers and both work in the industry. Every enrolment begins by sitting down with you and your child to work out what your goal is, and in most cases achievements are made from the very first class. Goat Track Theatre Co is so confident that the first class is even FREE, with no commitment or obligation to pursue any further if found to not be the right outlet for your child. Furthermore, if the entire program is seen through and the mutually agreed results haven’t been achieved, you don’t pay. The only prerequisites are, your child has to ‘Want’ to participate and must attend every class. Operating from Mt Tamborine since 2009, Goat Track Theatre is now open at the amazing Helensvale Library where the facilities are just endless. While your child is having a great time and attaining new and invaluable skills, you can have a coffee or do your shopping in the adjacent shopping centre, or perhaps enjoy some of the facilities available for you at the Library (you’ll be amazed at what’s on offer there). There are even programs for 18+ so maybe you’d like to give it a go yourself! Andrew tells us a common question he gets asked is, “What if it doesn’t work?” and his natural response is, “What if it does!?” In every area of every program, Goat Track Theatre Co has qualified and experienced teachers and has proven strategies. For more information visit www.goattracktheatreco.com or call Louise and Andrew any time on 07 5545 4421
The Gold Coast Pet and Animal Expo 2013
The largest animal expo in Australia is on again, admission is free and your pets are welcome! Over two days, you and your pets have the opportunity to be entertained and get informed, together. With two stages and demonstration areas, there’s an information session or a display to suit everyone. Pet parades, micro-chipping, grooming, live entertainment, an animal-free circus and farm-yard are only a few of the offerings of the weekend. Meet celebrities, like ‘Farmer Dave’ Graham of ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars’, who will share his extensive background in training working dogs and his exciting new method of using each and every dog’s basic desire to work or do something. Dave will show dog owners how easy and rewarding it can be to give your dog a job! It’s an eye opener for all dog lovers. And leading medium and animal communicator, Amanda De Warren, will be giving Live Animal Communications on the Hall Stage over the two days, as well as one-on-one readings making a connection with your pet directly to reveal all they want us to know. Amanda can connect with pets alive and crossed over. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with Australian Outback Spectacular superstars. Larrikin bushman Bluey and animal stars, liberty horse Brigalow and top dogs Digger & Cobber will all be there. The exhibition hall will have exhibitors for everything – pet food, accessories, pet photography, vets, groomers, boarding kennels, puppy schools, trainers and so much more. Compete against a dog in a new dog sport that any breed can learn called Nosework. Using eyes and hands, an audience volunteer will open boxes to find a money reward versus the dog that will only use his nose to sniff out his reward of dog food. See the Opera Birds who not only sing Opera, but can drive a car! We couldn’t possibly fit the weekend agenda in this article, so please visit the website listed below for more detail and information. This is a great opportunity to step out of your backyard and into an interactive backyard display. Go a little wild with the wildlife, reptiles, farm animals or discover some crazy critters. This is an event for all animal lovers. Bring your family, bring your friends and don't forget pets are welcome! Admission is free. When: Saturday 5th October 10:00am to 6:00pm Sunday 6th October 10:00am to 3:00pm Venue: Central Park Oval and Varsity Lakes Sports and Arts Centre Central Park Drive, Varsity Lakes Free Parking is available at Bond University. Dating after Divorce The process of dating can be many things - exciting, scary, fun, disappointing. It is important to have a good attitude and recognize both the opportunities and the pitfalls that exist. Out of all the many adjustments that come with divorce, being single can be a strange and daunting experience, especially if you are coming out of a long marriage. Dating is an opportunity to be honest with yourself and about how you are doing, and what your needs are. If you are shattered from a broken marriage and your confidence is at an all-time low, understand you are not going to attract a person who reflects the best in you. You need to pay attention to your own need to build your confidence back up and heal from the past. Don’t try to find someone to make it better for you as you are the one that needs to make it better, and you are the one that needs to find ways to do that. Adding positive activities into your life such as a fitness program, counselling, cultural experiences, sports, and professional and personal development is a great start in helping yourself. If you feel you are too depressed to make positive changes, seeing a doctor and a counsellor does help. Being too eager is a common pitfall in the dating experience. After years of marriage dating can seem very exciting and you might feel ready to fall in love again with the first prospective person you talk to. Rather than planning on being swept off your feet on every date, it would be more reasonable to hope to be able to enjoy an hour of pleasant conversation or activity with another person, rather than a heart stopping sprint into romance. It can be embarrassingly easy to act like an adolescent when embarking on dating after divorce. It’s exciting and we are sometimes unintentionally desperate to make everything feel better again by falling in love. Do your best to monitor your impulses and try to stay realistic. Where children are involved, it’s advisable to be very careful as to not overexpose them to your dating activities. While you might think the person you have just met is the most amazing person ever born, your children are unlikely to, and they are probably better protected by not being involved until things progress to a more mature stage. You might crave love and a happy ending, but it’s important to be realistic about what you are really ready for. It is foremost you heal from the past and notably, to learn from the past. Although it can appear daunting, if you can come to understand what it was about you that brought problems you had in your marriage, you will be in a much better position to make the improvements you need to make better decisions for yourself. The age of the internet has made meeting people much easier, and you don’t need to be afraid of internet dating, though you should be careful, and read all the safety tips first. Done well, internet dating can save you a lot of time, and can open up doorways to meeting people that you would not be able to otherwise.

Cabaret De Paris at Jupiters Hotel & Casino Theatre Review by Clinton Meskanen It comes to mind that Echo Entertainment has researched a formula for success that the Gold Coast may have in the past, unobserved. That is, quality and timeless entertainment. Remember, the performers are the owners of the acclaimed title of ‘French Parisian Artiste Spécialiste’. Whether it be a trip down memory lane for our elderly and honourable community, our age 30-ish wanderers in the dynamic entertainment change of genres, or the younger generations (18 plus please) curious as to what was considered risqué in the past, Cabaret De Paris will be enjoyed by all. The show opens at the seating, as the entire front row is transformed into the glittering ambiance of a French night club circa 1930’s, including the large round tables adorned with cabaret table lamps. Throughout the night the audience is treated to the variety and ‘glitz’ of amazing costumes, sublime performances, and the sultry struts of Parisian dance, led by the star of the performance, the legendary Marissa Burgess of Bal du Moulin Rouge fame. Whilst the performance was based heavily upon the intrigue and beauty of the now famous ‘Can-Can’ styled cabaret performances (which I choose not disclose to the minors), we were blessed and peppered with side performances, which within their own, deserve private accolade and description.

• Michael Boyd, Flame Thrower and Magical Illusionist is a ‘must see’ (slice and dice is an understatement). • The Male only Ballet and Acrobatics deserves another mention, not only for the ladies. • Pole dancing as an Artistic form was also a sexy and mind blowing performance. • The bicycle antics, humour and professionalism of Justin Case deserve a special mention of his own. Needless to say, all performances ended with resounding applause, and the night is topped off by several encores by Marissa Burgess and the entire cast, that round out the evening as one that should not be missed. Now showing for a limited time at Jupiters Theatre, tickets are available from Jupiters Box Office or Ticketek / 132 849. Performances are on daily from Tuesday to Sunday and tickets are from only $49. For more information visit www.jupitersgoldcoast.com.au
Kate Ceberano
Performing on the Gold Coast for one night only at Twin Towns on Friday 18th October, the Gold Coast will be graced with the presence, amazing voice and talents of Kate Ceberano. The vibrant Australian music icon spoke with The Bizz GC about her new album “Kensal Road” and life as an artist. “Kensal Road” is Kate’s first original album in 10 years. Recorded at Kensaltown Studios in London Kate tells us, “I had the most positive recording experiences of my career that studio!” “It’s an old converted school yard and so beautiful, and there is a collective of artists from all over the world who are available and ready to interact – French, Canadian, DJ’s, Song-writers, classical pianists, it’s amazing.” The album was written in the month that Kate was in London, with the recording process itself being just over 10 days. “It was a really epic experience” she says, “All the vocals were recorded at the same time, with engineers and studio assistants inside this beautiful room surrounded by glass and windows. This is the only way anyone should make music!” she laughs. About the music Kate explains, “I’ve incorporated Hawaiian folk in to the album, through the beautiful harmonies and ukulele which is popular right now, but always popular with me.” “The Ukulele was the only thing my Dad brought from Hawaii to Australia, oh and a surfboard!” she laughs. “She’s like a very dear cousin; always brought out at family events, and that’s how we would come together, we Ceberano’s!” Harmonies and Ukulele’s are only part of this recording, as Kate talks excitedly about how the group of musicians interacted and exchanged instruments the whole way through, “We delivered voice and harmony, and were playing all instruments. I’d be playing the drums and moving to piano, and it was just great!” We asked Kate why it has taken a decade to bring us a new original album, and she explains “I became a Mum! I have been recording over the last ten years, but couldn’t justify that subjective universe to go and write.” Laughing, with the element of EEK, “I got the guilt’s up and didn’t feel right about it. It’s a whole different way of
operating you have to go in to, and after 30 years in the business I think I needed those 10 years to be a parent; to get my career and certainty, and to put her through school.” Of course Kate was still working the whole way through and it most certainly had to be in the arts. Her projects have included television (Get Away, Dancing with the Stars, etc), theatre, musical theatre and recently even being the Artistic Director for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. “Artists are expected to do more than get up and sing a song these days, and they can do it! It’s a beautiful new age for art-form like that.” “Cabaret is amazing and very popular at the moment, and I’ve been curating it in a darker, more avant-garde way.” She jests, “I’ve worked with people like Malcolm McLaren!” From Pop/Rock with “I’m Talking”, to Rock Opera with Jesus Christ Superstar and touring with Opera Australia’s South Pacific recently, to Blues including performing at Blues on Broadbeach, Cabaret, winning Dancing with the Stars, Getaway and now a new album (just to name a few achievements), Kate Ceberano is undoubtedly Australian Entertainment Royalty. To celebrate the release of “Kensal Road” Kate will be performing at Twin Towns on Friday 18th October and says “It’s an invitation to come and have an escape with me on stage. It’s a wonderful excuse to get lost for an hour or two.” “Kensal Road” is available on iTunes, at JB Hi Fi and Sanity. For more information visit www.kateceberano.com.au

CD Reviews Dead Letter Circus - The Catalyst Fire Three members from former band “Ochre” formed “Dead Letter Circus” an alternative prog rock band hailing from Brisbane in late 2004, releasing one self-titled EP. In 2010 their debut album “This Is the Warning” debuted at Number 1 on the ARIA album chart and was later certified gold and voted by listeners into Triple J’s hottest 100 albums of all time. In early 2012 the band started work on a new album and in January 2013, after having little input into the new material, guitarist and founding member “Rob Maric” announced he would leave the band, replaced by “Clint Vincent” from “Melodyssey”. The band’s second studio album “The Catalyst Fire” released on 9 August, 2013, sees “Dead Letter Circus” take on a chunky, thicker, heavier sound. It certainly has prog sensibilities, but with more of an alt rock sound than the first album. “Dead Letter Circus” are known for the delay heavy, high end guitars of “Maric” teamed with “Kim Benzie’s” high range vocals, the driving bass of “Stewart Hill” and “Luke Williams” complex and intricate beats. Some feared the dynamic of the band would be lost with the addition of touring guitarist/keyboardist
Review by Mark Robart
“Tom Skerlj” and new guy “Clint Vincent”. Both add some valuable new input into the mix however while the band retains that familiar tone. Opener “The Cure” is one of the stand-out tracks, introduced through some heavy digital building with guitars that glide over the top. As the song develops, it includes hints of metal, gradually falling back into a softer acoustic part. “Burning Man” along with “I am”, showcase “Benzie’s” diverse vocal range and further stake his claim as one of Australia’s most impressive singer/songwriters. “Lodestar” the first single off the album is full of melodic vocals, driven by a super tight rhythm section and the grandiose drumming of “Williams”. “The Veil” is a mellower track with almost falsetto vocals revealing a more delicate side to the band. “Lost without Leaders” has a faster tempo along with some catchy guitar riffs and instrumentals that allow guitarists “Clint Vincent” and “Tom Skerlj” to really shine. “Stand Apart” picks up the pace even more and belts along like an out of control freight train, before closer “Kachina” slowly builds to its own rousing finale. “The Catalyst Fire” is my album of the year (so far). The melodic compositions are amazing, the song-writing is simply brilliant and every song is strong, meaningful and imperative. Lecia Louise - For You If you visit Lecia’s website you’ll be in for a big surprise, www. leciamusic.com.au is certainly a rather stylish and well designed website where you can pretty much digitally stalk Lecia and her music through all the latest online technologies available. The single/video reviewed in this article is located on the main page of her website, just scroll down a bit. Now I’ve listened to this song on many occasions and as a DJ, I would definitely play this track as a way of mixing out of some reggae tunes into a different genre. The song opens with a stripped back reggae vibe with Lecia’s smooth vocals reminding Page 22 www.thebizzgc.com.au
Review by Mark Saltzer me of Frente and Merril Bainbridge. The use of the word Mates in the second verse really pushes the Australian dialect, and this is something we don’t see enough in today’s Aussie music. The music on this track sent through flashes of Bryan Ferry and Split Enz, with a touch of Mental As Anything and Dynamic Hypnotics. The more you listen to this song the more it will grow on you, the lyrics relate and the chorus is easy to sing along to. I’d put a call out to the Stafford Brothers, Avici, Calvin Harris or David Guetta to remix this song into a dance ala Mr. Harris’ work with Florence the Machine. This song has the potential to become a floor-filler at any club around the world. Give it a go and you will grow to really like this version of the track, you just have to find the groove and stick with it. The video is well produced, with my only comment being that the wallflower in the video is way too beautiful to be depicted as a wallflower. 7/10
DJ Turhan
Love Nightlife
Popular Broadbeach nightclub, Love Nightlife is home for resident DJ Turhan (pronounced Too-rin), and after three years of hosting the club’s music he says, “I love it!” Love Nightlife operators have nailed it when it comes to a successful Gold Coast nightclub. Describing the venue as setting ‘a chic atmosphere for entertaining in style, and being vintage glamour, retro, with a clean modern touch’, we concur and are not surprised our featured DJ is so happy there. Of course, most will agree, it’s the ‘music’ that accentuates the ambience and has patrons returning week after week, which can only mean that DJ Turhan is pretty good at what he does. Playing Top 40 hits, commercial dance, remixes and sexy RnB, Turhan tells us, “I like to mix it up. I don’t have a pre-made set-list to just hit ‘play’, I like to choose the songs as the night progresses. You’ve got to read the crowd and keep them entertained.” In the DJ box Turhan opens his arms in a welcoming manner, has a beaming smile and says “The ‘Love’ box is fantastic, and equipped with everything!” Unlike other DJ boxes, this one
is very roomy and not restricting, “It’s a good set up” he boasts. Song requests are almost a thing of the past now, and Turhan tells us how it’s a part of DJing that he keeps alive, “It’s part of interacting with the crowd” he says, adding “You know, there was one time I got a request from a guy who wanted a particular song playing to approach a girl in the club and I played it. It was a couple years later that both of them came back to the club and that guy came up and couldn’t believe I was still there, thanking me because he ended up marrying that girl.” It’s not always a rosy story though, requests can come at a time where there is literally only a minute to find the next song and mix it in. He half jokes, “There’s nothing worse than dead-air, or silence, in a nightclub, imagine!?” As someone who still turns vinyl, at ‘Love’ he turns cd’s, “A lot of DJ’s use laptops but my concern is having a drink spilled on it and the night is gone. Besides, like vinyl, you can turn CD’s and scratch with them” he smiles. On a personal level, Turhan tells us how it was his brother who was a DJ and how he was in fact a dancer. He laughs as he says, “I loved dancing! Then I’d go and watch my brother deejay and thought, I want to do this.” Outside ‘Love Nightlife’ Turhan mixes tunes with a mate and occasionally will test them at ‘Love’ saying “They always work!” Asked why he doesn’t use them to progress his own career he jovially explains, “I need a Promotions Manager!” We were blown away by some of the big names DJ Turhan has played for during his career including Paris Hilton and Lil Jon (at ‘Love’), but certainly most notably, PRINCE, Will Smith and even KISS! “I got to hang out with Will Smith for a couple of days and that was great” he says humbly adding, “And Prince asked this beautiful girl to sit with him in front of the DJ box and didn’t say a word the whole night, he just watched me and listened!” He livens up as he recants the story about KISS.
“Instead of partying upstairs like Rock Stars, they chose to come down and join me in the box. Gene Simmons says to me, ‘You do your thing and let me do mine’” he laughs. “There were bras and underwear being thrown in to the box, and Gene has his tongue out and working the crowd with my tunes, it was huge. I felt like a Rock star! The crowd got so wild we thought the whole box was going to come tumbling down, so we actually had to ask them to leave and go back upstairs.” Back to being a DJ at ‘Love’, we asked Turhan what were the most notable changes he has seen in the Clubbing scene over the years. His response was simply, “The crowd. There doesn’t seem to be as many tourists, and when they come they love it! We have oversees visitors come in and have a great night, and even ask me sign coasters before they leave. Dancing has also changed in the last ten years. Don’t get me wrong, everyone’s on the dance floor and cheering but they’re not moving the way they used to.” On what he loves most about being the resident DJ at ‘Love’, that infectious smile of his tells the story without him even having to say, “I love it! This club is my family! And I get to meet so many great people and do what I love doing. I still appreciate it, and still get goose-bumps when the crowd goes nuts” he says laughing. ‘Love Nightlife’ is open on Friday and Saturday nights and there is always something going on. Visit www.lovenightlife.com.au for updates and more information. DJ Turhan and the staff will welcome you and ensure you have a great night! Our tip: dress for the occasion, ensure you take your smile and leave the electric cigarettes at home as we were refused entry by the diligent security for having one. NB: When we say diligent security, we say that with respect and it’s another plus of Love Nightlife. www.thebizzgc.com.au Page 23

If you ever manage to get along to Swinging Safari on a Wednesday night, you will encounter the tight funky grooves of The Hanlon Brothers. Known as ‘musician’s musicians’ they combine RnB, Reggae, Funk, Soul and Jazz with raw talent that expresses their versatility and technique. Audiences are on the dance-floor within minutes of their performance, or standing back ‘feeling’ the infectious grooves, watching the natural ease of the way The Hanlon Brothers bring their original tunes to life. The boys are known worldwide as hard working professional musicians and have built a solid reputation of being top notch session players. They have collaborated with and played alongside an array of artists including Stan walker, jazz greats The New Galapagos Duck, rock legend Brian Cadd, Bobby Alu who is one of Australia’s finest roots artists, Little River Band and even funk/pop band Wa Wa Nee just to name a few. The Hanlon Brothers come from a musical family which seems obvious when you see them live. From an early age they have been playing, creating and touring nationally and internationally from New Zealand to the UK, to the US and back again. Their dreams of playing their original music to audiences around the world are coming to fruition, as they have taken their ‘improvisations’ to the studios to record their independent release EP “For the Love”. I caught up with Saia and Omar Hanlon at the Burleigh academy of music, where Saia is currently teaching drums, and had a chat about the release of the debut album and how it came into being.
WIN! Saia and Omar Hanlon have given The Bizz GC 5 copies of “For the Love” to give away to our readers. Simply visit www.thebizzgc.com.au and go to the competitions page. Good Luck! Omar Hanlon Page 24 www.thebizzgc.com.au
rs The Jam
By Rob O’ Sullivan
The jam: Your album ‘For The Love’’ came out online on July 5th and released as a hard copy on September 7th with a live performance at The Basement in the Gold Coast Arts Centre. You guys had and continue to have a unique formula for writing material, tell me a bit about the process. Saia: How it came about was, Omar and I just came to a point where we said “Man! Are we going to keep doing this? After years of playing for different people, traveling overseas, touring around Australia, sessions, thousands of cover gigs. We needed to do it for ourselves. I mean it was great fun and we loved it, but just looking at how a career can be just that, we had come to a realisation that we are musicians, you’re your reputation, and we were getting a good reputation as session players but nothing as songwriters and us as artists. So one day we decided we didn’t want to orbit around other people careers, we wanted to make our own waves. I had a gig at swinging safari with Max Stowers which was kind of a jam night as such. I came up with an idea for an improv night and unfortunately it didn’t take off at first. I mean, we had all these great ingredients but, it wasn’t working. It’s like you get chocolate, garlic, orange juice, all great in their own right, but put them together and you go, what the hell is that? So I bought my brother in and changed everyone up around again and it just worked. The jam: So that’s basically where the album ideas came from? Saia: Yeah, what happens is, Omar writes chords patterns and grooves, charts them out for the band and we play through the charts with a vocalist and rapper add libbing over the top. They ask the audience for a word, any word. They then improv lyrics using the selected word over the groove and the whole song is based on that. We have been doing it since the start of the year and it’s really working for us. Another good thing is we get to see crowd reaction first hand as we create something on the spot. It’s a good indication on what works and what doesn’t. The jam: The album was recorded as a live record. Was that at Swinging Safari or at a different venue? Omar: It was recorded at the Jazz Club in Brisbane. There is a bit of a story behind the night of the gig. We had organised a rehearsal on the day of the gig because it was the only day everyone could make it. Rock star style, we get there, and singer turns up with half an hour of rehearsal time left. A bit stressed we’re going, this is not happening! So, we have a quick run through the songs and we had to go. On the drive to Brisbane we’re thinking, this is going to crash and burn! Our first album being recorded live at a different venue. We had only ever played the tunes at Swinging Safari in an inprov situation. Anyway, because the boys were becoming really good at improv, we said, here is the A to B whatever happens in between is up too you. We played the gig and it just worked. With the release of “For the Love”, the Hanlon Brothers are now planning to promote the EP with a tour of Europe and Asia. Until then don’t miss the opportunity to see them perform right here on the Gold Coast at Swinging Safari on Wednesday nights. Keep an eye out in The Bizz GC Gig Guide for additional shows at other venues. “For the Love” is available as a download on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. We agree with The Hanlon Brothers statement, If you like your Soul, RnB, Dub and Reggae, then you are going to love the Hanlon Brothers!

M1 Frustrations It’s a rare occasion to drive the M1 and not become frustrated for one reason or another…or several reasons for that matter. For the most part, the M1 is a wonderful highway with four “wide” lanes and an exit for anywhere you want to go. Sure the never-ending road works are painful, but the end results of them are fantastic. If you’ve ever driven the Pacific Highway along North Sydney, you’d certainly think our M1 is a work of art. Now, with four lovely wide lanes to drive along and plenty of exits, and very clear road rules of “Keep Left Unless Overtaking”, why for the love of sunshine do people insist on driving in the right hand lane at pretty much the same speed as the driver in the lane next to them, who is driving at pretty much the same speed as the driver next to ‘them’, who is driving at the same speed as the driver next to THEM!? It turns usually sane drivers, like me, in to raving lunatics weaving across the four lanes back and forth getting absolutely nowhere, throwing arms around in gestures that belong to passionate Italians, and Julia Gillard. And then finally there’s a gap just big enough that if you start driving like Mark Webber you can manoeuvre your way through and get in front of this line of seemingly oblivious and discourteous motorists.
Unfortunately, whilst being Mark Webber and making your manoeuvre, your speed hits 10km/hr more than the legal speed limit for around 7.2 seconds right at the spot where that highway patrol car with the BEAT number plates is idling in the median strip with its nose pointed to your side of the highway. Pfft! The driver in the right hand lane going pretty much the same speed
as the driver in the lane next to him, which was just UNDER the 110km/hr limit really should be the one to get the $133 fine and lose a point! Wrong.com.
17 Calls in One Day – Seriously!? Tele-sales calls are bad at the best times, and it’s an on-going frustration that most of us seem to be subjected to almost on a daily basis. It’s reminiscent of walking down the main road of Kuta or Phuket, only we can’t just walk right on by and ignore the incessant badgering of “You buy this! Buy This! Come in here!” When the home landline rings, we pick it up for a number of reasons – it’s a friend, family member or the dreaded reminder to pay a bill (which is the main reason we don’t pick up those ‘private’ numbers). There is one company that has reached the pinnacle in the wrong.com stakes of sales calls, managing to call my landline 17 times in one day! The scenario goes – 1. Phone rings, I pick up to a beep followed by a few seconds of silence followed by a beep and then cut off (As soon as there is a second’s silence I KNOW it’s a sales call, and how rude is that!? They’re annoying us already with the call, and expect us to hold on the line until they’ve been yelled at or hung up on by another innocent on their database. 2. Phone rings, I pick up to telesales person who can barely speak English calling me Mrs my-flatmate’s surname, which is bleeping annoying as I’m not his wife and have a name of my own, so we’re already on a bad foot. I tell them there’s no such person, and ask who they’d like to speak with. Telesales person starts rabbiting on about something to do with my being with Telstra and some better deal, which is pretty much all I can understand. I explain to them I am not with Telstra and that we are not in the market for changing phone companies so please remove the number from their database, as we are very happy with our current and ongoing provider. I hang up. 3. Repeat 1. 4. Phone rings and I can see it’s the same number so don’t pick it up and let it go to message bank, cursing at the ringing phone. 5. Repeat 4 but add more cursing 6. Repeat 4 but again with more cursing and a much higher volume level 7. Phone rings and flatmate picks it up to hear the same dribble as I got at step number 2. Partners says same things as I did, a touch more forcefully and hangs up 8. Repeat 6 9. Repeat 6 but now the visitors across the waterway staying at Vibe Hotel can hear me 10. Phone rings and I pick up, literally screaming down the phone for them to stop calling and take our number off their database or I’ll go to Dept. of Fair Trading and hang up 11. Repeat 6 12. Repeat 6 so that those shopping at Oasis in Broadbeach can hear me 13. Phone rings and I pick it up and ask them for the name of their company. They won’t divulge the name of the company and want to go on about my Telstra line. I tell them we’re not with Telstra and are not interested and can’t believe they are still calling us. I rudely swear at them down the phone line like a lunatic and hang up 14. Through to 17 - Repeat step 12. That was just one day, and apart from how loud I was actually yelling, there is no exaggeration in the above steps. The same company calls daily and I’m convinced it’s a conspiracy or a massive practical joke ON ME, and I’m waiting for the footage or audio to be aired sometime in the not too distant future. The phone numbers are 03 8370 7306 / 302. If you see either of these numbers come up on your phone, you have been duly warned! Wrong.com!
We’re talking Soundwave tickets are on sale now at www.soundwavefestival.com or at www.oztix.com.au. Soundwave has always been our favourite music festival, since 2008 when it was held at Riverstage Brisbane and the Botanical Gardens, and headlined The Offspring. Leading up Soundwave 2014, we’ll dedicate a page in every issue and bring you news and interviews from acts performing at Soundwave 2014, to help you in the process of making a ‘sound’ and educated decision on which stage you want to be at, and what time! All interviews and more information will be on our website in a dedicated page for Festivals where you can leave your comments. This week we talk to Fox Trotsky from Australian outfit, Nancy Vandal about how they got the Soundwave gig and their new album, “Flogging a Dead Phoenix”.
Fox Trotsky – Nancy Vandal Those who have been around on the GC for long enough will most likely remember seeing Nancy Vandal appear at our beloved Playroom (how can you forget the show they played The Lizard Kings!?). This Aussie collective of musicians/entertainers are known for their ‘trashy punk rock ‘n roll’ style with quirky sideshow style antics and comedy incorporated in to their shows. Playing Soundwave 2014, Fox Trotsky laughs, “We have to work out how the ‘traditional’ show will translate to a larger audience. We’re a dingy dive band and playing in daylight on a big stage is kind of unnatural.” Nancy Vandal will be tearing up the stage and then just stop, and perform a puppet show. To give you a feel for this outfit’s sense of humour, their press release about being out of the public eye for a decade reads, The turn of the century saw their output decrease significantly due to fears the millennium bug would damage band equipment as well as severe outbreak of nits. They have since performed occasionally based on tarot card readings and prevailing weather conditions. LOL! Currently seeking a company that can produce Olympic-size stage props for the Soundwave show, Fox jokes “We guarantee we’ll stand out, whether that’s for a good or bad reason is yet to be seen.” Asked how Nancy Vandal secured the gig at Soundwave 2014, Fox says “It came out of nowhere, we weren’t
pitching for it. AJ (festival organiser) had seen us in the old days and heard we were getting back together with a new album and indicated his interest. It was embarrassingly straight forward.” Nancy Vandal have just released their new album “Flogging a Dead Phoenix”, and along with the pre-Soundwave promotional tour and of course Soundwave 2014, Fox says, “We’re making a comeback in every sense.” Chuckling he adds, “We weren’t put together by Simon Cowell 6 months ago you know.” On the 14 track album he tells us “We’ve veered to the ‘rock and roll’ side of punk with this album. We like the garagy MC5 route via a lot of other influences. It’s rock ‘n roll with punk sensibility.” “Like the band, it rises then crashes and burns and rises again. Rather than flogging a dead horse, we’re flogging a dead phoenix” he laughs. Easiest way to get a copy is via their website www.nancyvandal.com and you can get it on iTunes, etc. Playing at the Miami Shark Bar on Saturday 9th November, pre-sale tickets are only $15+BF and will be a great way to see a full Nancy Vandal show before they hit the Soundwave stage. Tickets are available at www.bigtix. com.au or www.oztix.com.au. The Bizz GC will definitely be there!
