Editor’s Letter Hello, and welcome again to another edition of The Bizz GC! The team here are overjoyed at the response and feedback we have had from so many of you and would like to shout out a big Thank You! Please keep your feedback and words of encouragement coming, they make the long hours spent putting this publication together worth it. Our city has so much going on that we have increased our page numbers to bring you more information on what’s happening in local entertainment, on local people. We welcome local musician, Rob O’Sullivan on board with ‘The jam’, and he interviews Hussy Hicks for his first assignment. We also welcome Naomi Douglas to the team with her column as a professional Divorce Coach. This page certainly takes on a more serious side to the rest of the magazine, though it’s a sad fact that many of us here on the Gold Coast are contemplating or going through separation, and this column will offer helpful tips, information and advice on the process. Back to the FUN, you’ll find a heap of giveaways in this issue which include tickets to Absolute 80s show, The Guns’N Roses show, a starter paint kit from Wayne Clements, a phone and tablet accessory pack from mimobi, tickets to the Dome at Gold Coast Turf Club and tickets to The Boomerang Festival’s inaugural year being held on the BluesFest grounds on the October long weekend. That’s all the room I have, so please enjoy the read, enter the comps and don’t forget to check the Gig Guide and support our local artists. Have FUN! Natasha

Wooden Surfboard Day On Sunday 4th August in the park across from Currumbin Alley Beach, Grant Newby will be hosting this year’s Wooden Surfboard Day. Grant say, “Come early and have a morning surf at the point and then settle in for the day at the park”. Different to other surf events, this day is non-competitive and non-commercial. Grant tells us, “It’s a get together for likeminded people” “We’ve had people from all over the world turn up”. Tom Wagner, a well-known surfer from Noosa will be there from around lunchtime and along with Grant and some others, will sit and discuss boards, answer questions and share experiences. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring along their boards, alaia’s, hand planes, body boards, surfies or whatever you have been building – as long as it’s made of wood. Everyone is welcome to come along, bring a picnic, see some amazing craftsmanship and enjoy a day in the park. For more information you can email Grant at grantnewby@bigpond.com or check out his blog http://woodensurfboards.blogspot.com.au/ The Joy of Wood and Water… by Grant Newby Wooden surfboards have been around for a long time and it was probably on a simple piece of wood that man first enjoyed surfing waves somewhere in the world. It may have only been a crude piece of driftwood found on the beach that served as a way of catching that first wave, but the joy and connection felt with the sea then is no different from what we feel today. As someone who has crafted a surfboard from wood, taken it out and caught a wave on it, I can tell you that the first time you paddle in and get your feet, is truly a timeless feeling of joy and achievement.

Boomerang Festival

Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, Byron Bay (the home of Bluesfest) Photo courtesy of Mick Richards

A new festival for “All Australians” will take place on the October long weekend at the home of Bluesfest. This is a multi-arts festival with local, national and international talent. No other Australian event quite matches the deep exchanges through the many oral and visual delights the audience will experience, with the diverse line-up having some unexpected surprises in its holistic program. The Bizz GC was fortunate enough to get to speak with leading cultural creative and Producer and Festival Director of Boomerang Festival, Rhoda Roberts, and it’s very difficult not to make this entire page about this amazing woman. A member of the Bundjalung nation, Widjabul and Gidabul clans of Northern NSW and South East QLD, Rhoda’s credentials are a mile long including being Head of Indigenous Programming for Sydney Opera House, Producer for Vibe Australia, founder and Artistic Director for the annual International festival – The Dreaming based at Woodford, SBS journalist and presenter, documentary writer and producer, to name just a few. Asked how the idea of Boomerang Festival came about Rhoda explained this is an event that has been in the making since 2009 after founding the festival The Dreaming and working on Sydney NYE, she says “It became evident from the program that the time was right for Australian audiences”. “Getting a new event takes time with applications, permits and things like that” she says “I was in contact with the amazing Peter Noble (Director and co-founder of Bluesfest) who suggested resurrecting The Dreaming in this market and that he would put his money where his mouth is as there is no government support for this event”, explaining that Housing, Education and Health issues were the priorities for the government. Peter has been involved with indigenous struggles since the 70s. After a lot of planning and a lot of talking Boomerang Festival is ready to open.

Old custodians and senior law men and women live in northern NSW with their traditions, still speaking the language, and the push is for everyone to learn. “We are all one” and the hope is this event will help people connect and be proud of their legacies. The Boomerang Festival is hosting the oldest culture of the world through music, dance, film, comedy, workshops, discussion and more! (The Bizz GC will feature more from our interview with Rhoda Roberts in the next edition) A three day event, The Boomerang Festival is a festival like no other. You may not be familiar with the band names, but the line-up combines many genres across four stages including roots, reggae, folk, R&B and Hip Hop. Symphonies, rock, there is literally everything. The International Indigenous Film Festival (IIFF) will feature shorts, documentary and feature films including the award winning Bastardy featuring Jack Charles. A co-founder of Australia’s first Aboriginal theatre company, Uncle Jack joins in conversation to discuss working with Australia’s most renowned actors (Geoffrey Rush, David Gulpilil and Bill Hunter), as well as his life and still working at aged 70. Traditional dancers from Arnhemland, Canada, Torres Street, NZ, everywhere will be teaching moves and the stories behind them. The Dance grounds are a wonderful place to sit and watch colour and movement, as well as be involved. Various workshops will take place including language workshops, and you can sit with weavers from everywhere and chat during the process in a very personable experience, learning how we all have the same aspirations for our children, feelings toward the government which will be interesting as it will be election time, and be told by the old ladies who are so passionate that, “every girl in Australia should know this” All this and so much more which we’ll feature in upcoming editions.

Rhoda Roberts

The line-up: Moana & the Tribe (NZ) Quique Neira (CHILE) Rako Dancers (ROTUMAN/FIJI) The Chooky Dancers (ELCHO ISLAND – NT) Busby Marou (QLD) Casey Donovan (NSW) Briggs (VIC) Jack Charles in Bastardy (VIC) Dr. Djiniyini Gondarra OAN (NT) The FULL program is released on Wednesday 24th July with both hard copy and online versions. Visit boomerangfestival.com.au or phone the Boomerang Festival office on 02 6685 8310. We’ll also publish it in the edition closest to the festival and give you more detail about the artists and events in each issue leading up to the festival.

Wayne Clements Internationally renowned local artist Wayne Clements resides and has his gallery, Clemart Gallery & Art Supplies, on Tamborine Mountain. Between filming for his television series Art Studio”, holding workshops in his gallery, travelling the nation and the world with his art shows, making tutorial DVDs and supporting his favourite charities, Wayne was able to find the time to have a coffee with The Bizz GC. On arrival we were greeted by a relaxed, pleasant and even jovial gentleman, and his lovely wife Janice. Standing in the gallery surrounded by Wayne’s work showcased across the walls, you get an immediate feeling of positivity. Wayne’s philosophy is “To hell with the critics and rule book. Paint what you like!” He openly tells us about when he began his career in art 25 years ago, and how he was asked by a friend to go and watch someone paint. Although not overly excited about the idea he went along and fell in love with it straight away, making the instant decision to pursue it. “I was hopeless when I started, thing is I liked it” he says. “Most people ‘say’ they can’t do it but I’ve found most people can learn it and I’m proof of that.” “You just start building it and you fix it as you go along.” Wayne learned to master his art in a traveling show across the country which he still does to this day, painting in shopping centres where he paints up to 50 canvases a day. A raffle is held at each show where the winner may choose a canvas of choice and the proceeds of the raffle going to Care Flight, a charity that he is particularly fond of. The other paintings are all auctioned there and then sell in less than an hour for anywhere between $200 and $3,000

Wayne Clements

“You just start building it and you fix it as you go along.” ‘Learn to Paint in Oils’ Instructional DVD A sought after artist and teacher, we asked Wayne about his step by step instructional DVD, ‘Learn to Paint in Oils’, and why someone learning would choose a DVD over a one-on-one session. “I don’t do private lessons” he tells us, “DVD’s are better. I’ve done classes and workshops and found I got more out of a DVD. You can sit in a 2 hour session and actually learn nothing, then watch a DVD and pick something up in 10 minutes.” He explains, “Often in groups people are too self-conscious of others seeing their work, so they are too careful about what they’re painting.” “You’ve got to be able to splash around and make mistakes. You need to mess it up to learn.” He goes on to tell us, “I’ve spent 25 years learning myself by messing it up and fixing it”, “You can save a lot of time and a lot of money though the DVDs”.

Page 6 www.thebizzgc.com.au

Painting in shopping centres is his ‘thing’ and that’s where the opportunity for his television series, “Art Studio” came about. 31 Digital CEO happened to be in a centre where Wayne was painting and left his card with a request to call him. “The show has opened up a whole new world for me” says Wayne, “It’s allowed me to become a mentor to other people which is something I never had, and you just don’t know who’s watching.”

“I’ve had people contact me after watching the show, telling me how it’s affected their lives – people with depression who watch the show and take up painting finding an escape in it; a paraplegic who was in hospital and had nothing to do except watch my show, took up painting and credits me for saving his life.” On a lighter side Wayne shows his sense of humour by telling us how he joked with his wife and friends of how he would be up for a Logie when the series began. He thought it was a practical joke when he was contacted to be told he actually had been nominated for “Best Light Entertainment Show” for two years running (2011 and 2012). Each painting from the show is sold and all proceeds go to RACQ Careflight Rescue, “You never know when or if you, your mother, daughter, sister, cousin, friend of neighbour will need them. Care Flight is for everyone.” Wayne is currently in the process of speaking with commercial television stations about his show. Back to the gallery, Wayne does hold workshops, and live drawing classes in his on Saturdays from 4-6pm with a live model, and talks about how you can have 20 people all painting the same subject matter and have 20 different outcomes because of the individual interpretations despite all using the same techniques, “which is what it’s all about” he says. “We have students here of only 12 months who are having their own exhibitions, and they’re that good that even we bought one” he proudly tells us. We asked for some advice on starting out and Wayne is adamant about the importance of using quality products. “The biggest mistake people make when starting out is buying cheap canvas, paints and brushes. Because they’re starting out they don’t want to spend a lot of money, but it doesn’t work with cheap stuff for many reasons.” He explains that cheap canvases can soak up the paint and how cheap brushes won’t give the impressions they’re supposed to, saying “People buy these products and their artwork doesn’t work out how they wanted or expected and think, ‘it must be me’ and give up.” He adds, “I see it all the time when they go passed me in the shopping centres, and I want to run up to them and tell them, but you can’t.”

Clemart Gallery and Art Supplies

“I want to say, do this, use that and give it another go – it works!” He was excited to tell us about a new product in the market, W Oils, which is water-soluble oil paint, “Absolutely amazing” he says, “No more turps or fumes or un-cleanable mess, it washes out in water. They’ve nailed it!” “I’ve even got a 90 year old painting in oils now and loving it, because there’s no fear of having to use turps” he laughs. In fact he loves the product so much the company even made a colour especially for him – Velution Violet, and it’s in such demand there’s a back order to get it. Of course Wayne now stocks these oil paints and tells us he can hardly keep up with demand. On themes for his paintings, Wayne Clements paints a bit of everything saying, “I get bored if I do the same theme all the time. I’m always looking for new ideas and lot of them come from the public” he says. “Someone will give me a photograph to paint and it will inspire a whole new idea.” Obviously still passionate about the art he took up 25 years ago, sitting with Wayne in his gallery makes you want to take it up yourself. With a gleam in his eye he states again, “You Can!” Clemart Gallery and Art Supplies is a lovely place to enjoy some amazing artwork, have a great coffee and be inspired. Situated at Eagle Heights Shopping Village on Mount Tamborine, make a day of it and stop in to say hello. You can find more information and opening hours at http://www.wayneclements.com.au

WIN! Wayne Clements was gracious enough to offer us a “Wayne’s Paint Kit” valued at $120. The kit includes a ‘Learn to Paint’ DVD, colour wheel, and all the knives and brushes you need to start painting. Simply visit www.thebizzgc.com.au and go to the competitions page to enter. Good Luck!

The Palm Beach Youth Music Venture Ian Grace Founder and President of PBYMV

“There are no winners and losers like those reality television shows” Ian explains, “Everyone wins.”

Shannon Perry, Kyra Le’Sech, Jasmin Dallacqua, Keily Newton and Joe Callander “The Palm Beach Youth Music Venture (PBYMV) has been established to engage local youth within the Palm Beach, Elanora, Currumbin and Tugun areas. It provides a safe place for teenagers to learn, make friends, build networks and entertain themselves through music, and has a strong focus on reaching kids at risk and disengaged youth. PBYMV is designed to give participants an avenue for legitimate and developmental social engagement, team work, to build new or improved musical skills and raise self confidence and selfesteem. Working with local musical mentors from established bands and community volunteers increases the community involvement and reduces the risk of anti-social behaviour and youth crime.” Founder and President of PBYMV, Ian Grace spoke to The Bizz GC about the program which has now been running for two years. Relocating from Brisbane in 2006 with his wife Julie, Ian enthusiastically speaks about the Gold Coast and shares our views of what a wonderful city it is. “However, Palm Beach has had its share of youth problems and I saw what I perceived as the need for more organised activity for young people in the local area -- to give them something to occupy themselves with on an ongoing basis, something to be enthusiastic about, something they would take pride in -- and in some instances, to avoid them becoming bored and creating mischief.” Ian set to work gathering support for a similar program he was involved with in Brisbane – “Come Together”, a council sponsored music program that brought together musically minded people and placing them in bands. He needed equipment, mentors, supporters and a venue, and after many months of meetings and hard work the breakthroughs started. The Gold Coast Sun aided in getting word to the community; Page 8 www.thebizzgc.com.au

the Palm Beach Anglican Church provided a venue which has now been moved to Palm Beach Scouts Hall as the program has already outgrown the space the church provided; committee members loyal to the cause came and introduced valuable contacts including PBYMV main sponsor Roland, who donated $’000s worth of equipment for the youth; and mentors including Leisa Mannion of Australian Idol fame, and Michael McCartney who was the drummer for Wolfmother when they supported AC/DC at April 2010 Brisbane concert joined and are supported by highly talented local musicians. Tugun Bendigo Bank has become another main sponsor with ongoing support and the list goes on. Ian’s vision has become a reality.

The Palm Beach Youth Music Venture is a totally free community service now in its fourth year. Ian explains the many benefits for everyone involved and how gratifying it is for what the program has done for the kids, including improving self-esteem, engaging, working as a team and so much more. “We really do care for them as people and it has become an extended family.” “A few go on to recording, some form bands with other participants and there are four kids from the first program now helping and mentoring the new kids.” When asked about other areas of the Gold Coast he tells us that everyone is welcome, though getting to Palm Beach for the mentoring and rehearsals is difficult. A successful model has been created with PBYMV and they would like to expand across the Coast. This requires funding, premises, volunteering and the all-important mentors. “It will happen,” states Ian “It’s just a matter of when.”

How it works “Everyone wins” The program runs for around four (4) months beginning with an audition, “Everyone gets in, there’s no maybes about that” says Ian, “though you need to have some music ability.” The prerequisites for auditioning are: being between 13 and 19 years of age (a year or two either side doesn’t matter), and being able to play at least three chords with reasonable dexterity IE able to keep time over 24 bars, and that you are able to ‘feel’ chord changes to work on songs or be able to stay in key if you are a singer. “There are no winners and losers like those reality television shows” Ian explains, “Everyone wins.” After the auditions, the children and young adults are placed in a band relevant to their genre, age, etc. or in the choir, and participate in several months of mentoring and rehearsals. At the conclusion of the program a concert is hosted by Currumbin RSL in front of an audience of hundreds – friends, family, supporters and other interested people.

Our Mission: To create a Youth Music Program to engage local youth within the Palm Beach, Elanora and Currumbin area. To provide a safe place for the youth to learn, make new friends, build self-confidence and self- esteem through music. Goals: To give the local youth, including troubled and at risk youth: • a focus and direction in their lives. • re-establish their pride. • a unique experience for young people and the community at large • a vision to work to and be part of - Palm Beach “The Musical Capital of the Gold Coast.” • a safe place for teenagers to make friends and entertain themselves. • access to professional mentors. • training, education and information.

Kids preparing for the big night being held at Currumbin RSL Sunday 28th July To celebrate the completion of the current program, the next concert will be held on Sunday 28th July at Currumbin RSL who donates the venue for the event, and Soundlounge leave the stage, sound and lighting in support. Tickets are only $10 per person or $75 for a table of 10, with children 12 years and younger getting free admission. Tickets can be obtained by contacting Ian Grace at amazing@iangrace.com.au or calling 0413 943 352 / 0424 143 140.

Dividing Assets When a Marriage Ends What is Fair and Reasonable?

Written by Naomi Douglas, FDRP

There are many stay at home mums who have given up a lot looking after babies at home, maintaining and managing a clean and tidy home, managing all sorts of marital and parental demands as well as home duties, effectively giving up their careers to ensure their family enjoyed a happy life. Then, when the children had grown to young adults, let’s say the marriage came to an end, and the couple separated and divorced after reaching a financial property settlement that was agreed by both parties. Sound fair and reasonable? Chances are you will agree in principle, right? Now, let me give you another example.

Mary is a successful businesswoman who is divorced, has 2 children grown and off her hands. She has assets exceeding a million dollars, owns a business, has a nice home she owns as well as other investments, a luxury car and enjoys a great lifestyle. Mary meets Simon. Simon is a nice man, but he has no assets. In fact he is in debt. They form a relationship. Simon moves into Mary’s home. They live together for around 12 months and they marry. Mary sells her business and moves overseas and Simon gives up his job and moves to be with her. Mary gets a very well paid job and they continue to enjoy a very good life and lifestyle - international travel; fine restaurants; luxury cars. Mary pays everything for Simon does not work. They return to Australia and Mary buys another home. During this time Mary has continued to pay for everything, including travel and accommodation costs for Simon’s parents and grandparents to visit them and his grandmother’s 90th birthday party. She

pays for expenses incurred by his son such as repairs to his car, and even pays money to Simon’s ex-wife to help with expenses for his youngest daughter. And when Simon’s eldest daughter is married, Mary pays several thousand dollars to contribute to the costs of the wedding, the whole while indulging Simon with countless gifts. Eventually, Simon gets a job and then leaves after a short time. Several jobs ensue and each time he leaves because he is dissatisfied with what he is doing. Mary is building up another business and again ensuring there is a very good income. Money, regular travel, 5 star restaurants and more, all paid for by Mary. Simon decides he wants to try to start up a business, and Mary encourages and assists him to start up and invests a considerable amount of money in helping get the business off the ground. However Simon’s business prowess is not good. He makes considerable losses and eventually gives up altogether. Mary loses all of the money she

invested in Simon’s business. More time passes and eventually Simon gets a good job with a large company and is at last making a considerable income. However, all of the money he makes is deposited into his own private bank account and he does not contribute to paying the home mortgage of the home that Mary purchased and placed as a gesture of togetherness in both of their names. Simon never contributed one cent to the home, or any expenses. Mary organized gardeners, pool cleaners, housekeepers, and they regularly eat out. She washes, cleans, hangs and irons her clothes and is responsible for herself. Mary decides she has had enough of the one way street and ends the marriage. There is no other party, no affair or other person involved in breaking up the marriage. Mary has simply just had enough.

So, here is the question. How much money do you think Mary should pay Simon in a financial property settlement? They have no children and were married for 10 years. Simon was never a stay at home housekeeper with any household responsibilities. How much money and what percentage of assets should Simon receive as a financial property settlement? What is fair and reasonable? His life was improved dramatically as a result of this marriage, for his experiences, education received and everything paid for by Mary. If you think that the marriage should simply end, and Simon should walk away with what he brought to the relationship – effectively nothing, there are many that would agree, This story is exactly what happened to one of my clients. the only difference is, that ‘Mary’ in this story is really a man, and the ‘Simon’ in this story is really a woman. Do you feel any differently? Has your opinion or view changed? There are clear algorithm formulas for determining child support payments and yet there are no such formulas that parties can rely on when faced with the task of dividing their assets. This puts many people in the position of paying high legal fees in order to have a judgement made on what will become of their net worth. The creation of such formulas could give policy makers the opportunity to acknowledge and assess differing types of relationships and their relevant histories to create fair and clear outcomes.

Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera)

Brian Mannix (Uncanny X-Men)

Scott Carne (Kids in the Kitchen)

Aussie music icons, front-men for Uncanny X-men (Brian Mannix), Boom Crash Opera (Dale Ryder) and Kids in the Kitchen (Scott Carne) will put on a two hour show called Absolutely 80s at Southport RSL Friday 26th July. This is an entertainment experience delivering some of Australia’s greatest remembered songs from the 80s adding humour with comedic on-stage banter between the artists. It’s a full show and Brian Mannix tells us, “We want everyone to have fun.” Playing chart and album favourites from each respective band Scott, Dale and Brian also surprise the audience with classic 80s covers they sing together. It’s an 80s experience which Scott Carne adds, “It’s got all the bells and whistles. We take the piss out of each other, Brian in particular with his one-liners, but we do the music justice.” He adds, “We’re true to the cause and do the songs as the originals sound as opposed to unplugged versions. It’s a great night out for the 80s enthusiast.” The guys have always enjoyed playing on the Gold Coast with Brian laughing as he remembers with X-Men, “There’s palm trees, the weather is good and the girls wear bikini’s!” Scott explains Absolutely 80s was formed after he and Brian did a couple of shows together prior to the ’06 Countdown Spectacular and “got on like a house on fire” “We recruited a couple of the other 80s stars and here we are”. Brian jokes “I hated Scott Carne back then! And his stupid band! But they were competition”, adding more seriously “You mellow as you get older and now Scott and Dale are two of my closest friends. We never seem to have a shit-fight, and if it was a pain in the arse to do we wouldn’t do it, but we’re having so much fun - and they tolerate me.” Where: When: Time: Tickets:

Southport RSL Friday 26th July Doors open at 8:00pm for 8:30pm start Only $25 at www.southportrsl.com.au or call 07 5552 4200

John Kirk who is The Uncanny X-Men’s bass player now resides right here on the Gold Coast and along with other local musician Jim Cowling, plays in local bands, The Triple J’s, Made in Australia (MIA), Head Injuries (The Midnight Oil Show) and DVS. Both join the Absolutely 80s team here on the Gold Coast and are looking forward to playing with old friends to a ‘now home’ crowd. Scott, Dale and Brian are working on an album due to be released in a few months. Scott tells us “It’s a ‘Live’ record and we’re putting the finishing touches to it, mixing and cleaning it up a bit”. Brian jovially tells us, “Dale wants to record something in the studio rather than a live album, and if I’m the deciding factor then decision could be pending for a while” going on to say “We love making music and we’re putting ‘something’ out.” (The Bizz GC suggest a double cd – Recorded and Live Show) Yet to be named, the guys have promised to keep us updated and be among the first to receive a copy when it’s done. We also got some scoop on an autobiography that Brian is releasing but we’ll save that for another story. Even if you didn’t get ‘in’ to Australian Pop Rock in the 80s this is a show worth seeing, and hearing Change in Mood (KITK), Dancing in the Storm (BCO) and 50 Years (X-Men) today can be very different to how you heard them then, and they are a soundtrack to an era of time. We at The Bizz GC are really looking forward to this show and look forward to see you there for a Party!

CD Reviews

by Mark Robart

Black Sabbath - 13 The return of Black Sabbath has been anticipated by music fans all around the world and after 35 years, "13" has arrived. The result is an album that sounds just like classic Sabbath, no real surprise there, but the fact that it is such a good one just might be. "13" features the return of lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, who joins original Sabbath members Geezer Butler on bass and Tony Iommi on guitar. Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) replaces Original drummer Bill Ward who does not play on the album due to a contract dispute. Produced by Rick Rubin and recorded primarily in Los Angeles, "13" was released on 10 June 2013. Although it has been criticised for having a compromised sound quality, due to an overly compressed dynamic range, this has not stopped it from reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart after its first week of sales and No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts, selling over 155,000 copies in the first week. The thing I found most surprising was how good Ozzy's vocals sounded. The dead eyed zombie who multi-tracked his way through his last few solo albums is nowhere to be heard. "End of the Beginning" the eight minute epic opener, starts with an almighty riff and pounds along to a death-blues groove reminiscent of the song "Black Sabbath" the opening track off their 1970 debut.

The first single from the new album is "God is Dead?". Geezer had wanted to call this song "American Jihad" but Ozzy had other ideas, stating “I’m the guy at the front singing it., and now we’re gonna play… ‘American Jihad'. I would have the whole fucking army after me." "Zeitgeist" , with its shimmering acoustic guitars and bongo drums, mixed with some fine jazz soloing by Tony Iommi, is effectively a Planet Caravan part II. The unlikely guitar-tambourine combo in "Age Of Reason" works well with the bank of keyboards and Iommi's blistering, all powerful lead guitar breaks. "Damaged Soul" is the stand out track for me, a heavy blues jam, complete with Ozzy on harmonica that rewinds all the way back to their debut. Opening with some down-tuned riffing, Ozzy tells us how he is losing the battle between Satan and God. As the song progresses, it turns into an all-out blues jam that "Cream" or even "Hendrix" would be proud. There are eight tracks on the regular edition, five of them over seven minutes long, the Deluxe Edition has three bonus tracks including “Methademic” - I think the title here says it all. "Peace of Mind" and “Dear Father”, a topical tirade against abusive priests, fathers, and ultimately God. "13" doesn’t sound like any one of their previous albums. It sounds, at various stages throughout its 70-minute entirety, like all of them. If it does turn out to be their last album, then this is the perfect way to close. 8/10

Bullet For My Valentine - Temper Temper Welsh metal band "Bullet for my Valentine" return with their latest effort, "Temper Temper" released on February 8, 2013 and produced by Don Gilmore, who also worked on 2010's "Fever". For the first half of their career, think "Hand of Blood" "The Poison" and "Scream Aim Fire" BFMV were known for mixing 80's thrash metal with metalcore. In the past few years their sound has changed quite drastically, first on "Fever" and now on "Temper Temper" which has an even more commercial rock feel to it. However, unlike "Fever", "Temper Temper" displays epic amounts of unoriginal, clichéd and immature song-writing. All members of the band are great musicians yet the overall sound feels more focused on intensity rather than technicality, with their intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorussolo-chorus structure in almost every song, it all becomes far too predictable. The quality of the mix of the album is rather poor as well. Finishing the album and releasing it as fast as possible seemed to be the main objective. Critical reception of the album has been mostly mixed to negative. This is far from their best work in my opinion. I am not saying it is complete garbage either. There are a few highlights, the guitar work on the album is spot-on, Michael Page 22 www.thebizzgc.com.au

Paget's (lead guitar, backing vocals) shredding techniques are simply brilliant and.. well, it's "Bullet for my Valentine". "Breaking Point" opens with a killer riff and a roar from Matthew Tuck (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), this song pretty much sums up the album in terms of style and content. We hear a lot less screams from either Matt Tuck or bassist Jason James with the band instead relying on Tuck's clean vocals to carry the songs through. "Truth Hurts”, again the song starts out well, but fades by time we reach the first verse. "Temper Temper" has a few catchy riffs but is let down by poor song writing. Tuck's lyrical content seems not to have changed too much since the band started and still remains quite juvenile and angry. "P.O.W." a slower and heavier track is one of the better songs on here, the guitar work is superb and the lyrics are actually quite good. "Dead To The World" sounds a lot like "Say Goodnight" from "Scream Aim Fire" just without the brutal vocals. "Riot" the first single released from "Temper Temper" is more pop punk than metal. "Tears Don't Fall (Part2) misses the gritty, incredibly powerful aspect of the original and fails in comparison. Closing track "Livin' Life (On The Edge Of A Knife)" is definitely the album's saving grace, a quality song, more like the BMFV of old. "Temper Temper" sounds like they were aiming more for Metallica than Metalcore and when even your biggest fans start to criticise your material, you know it’s time for a serious rethink. 6/10

“The Show” Saturday 31st August 8:00pm to Midnight Burleigh Town Tavern With Wallapalooza having been a smashing success last month and artists and punters alike calling out for more, CIA’s (Clark Independent Artistry) Andy Clark is coming through for the local music scene again. This time we’ll be treated to a night of original artists at Burleigh Town Tavern and the event is simply called “The Show”. Wanting to get back on the map for live music, Burleigh Town Tavern has agreed to team up with Andy and host a night of five (5) original artists. “The Show” will have more of a Funk, Pop and Pop-Rock feel, making it a little different from the heavier Wallapalooza. Featuring a few of Andy’s favourites the line-up includes Madison Kat, Velvet Ballroom and Code

Blue, with the addition of two new acts that have caught his attention – These Four Walls and Mallory Vanetti. (The Bizz GC will feature each act for you in the lead up to the night, starting with Madison Kat.) Each set will be half an hour and although no side-shows have been confirmed, it wouldn’t be a CIA event if there wasn’t a twist of some sort. We’ll let you know what it is as soon as we find out. Thanks to sponsor Saligia Clothing Group, CIA and Burleigh Town Tavern, “The Show” is another FREE event that promises great music, great sound and great entertainment. Put this one in your diary and we’ll see you there.

Eight piece funk-soul band Madison Kat, is a group with a unified purpose…having a reputation built around edgy live performance, they thrive on the challenge of delivering an entertaining musical and visual show. Lead by singer Quin Samin the band features a 3-piece horn section (trumpet, sax & trombone) and a traditional 4-piece rhythm section. Each of the 8 members brings their own musical style to the table, combining to produce a quality mix of traditional and contemporary funk and soul grooves. With roots in live music, the Gold Coast based outfit has a wealth of musical experience, having played the vast majority of live music venues in their native South-East Queensland and beyond. Currently the band is making a push to focus their attention on recording a selection of some of their original material as a side project, a style they classify as “a raw soul base, with their own quirky twists”. Trumpeter Matthew “Matt-arms” Armstrong explains; “Yeah nah it’s hard to put a finger on

exactly what genre to class us as because there are so many styles we like dabbling in, we probably prefer it that way anyhow”. With the goal near of releasing a 4-track EP, the boys are motivated to get their new tunes out there and let everybody know what the next phase of the band is about. Madison Kat work hard not to be pigeon holed in the “cover band” genre. They are conscious of regularly refreshing their extensive cover-track repertoire, manipulating each song with their own musical arrangements. They balance obscure and alternative styles with classic favourites. This philosophy has lifted them above mediocrity, and with the inclusion of their own original material into the set, they are assuring further diversification. Sharing the night with the audience is what these swashbucklers are renowned for. Their visual energy and crowd involvement is entertaining. They are a down-to-earth group of guys each with individual personality and no one player taking the spotlight.

“Hussy Hicks” With only a couple of instruments and a passionate desire to share their songs, Hussy Hicks’ Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz have travelled the world playing for festivals, venues and dedicated fans. These girls, who call Gold Coast home, have become renowned for their live performances and have been described as spontaneous, explosive and emotive. Their musical approach has been welcomed in the Roots, Folk, Blues, Country and World music circuits, though placing them in a certain genre doesn’t do justice to their music. Julz Parker is regarded as one our country’s finest guitarists and has traded finger-style, flamenco,

gypsy and Arabic licks from street performers to Phil and Tommy Emmanuel, John Jorgenson, Lulo Reinhardt and Joe Robinson, while Leesa Gentz is most recognised for her soaring vocals and joyful, endearing stage presence and she has been steadily earning respect as one of the most captivating vocalists in her field. “Julz must be the country’s top female player.” – Phil Emmanual (in Australian Guitar Magazine) “[Leesa] spectacular, like Robert Plant in female trousers!” – Pierpaolo Adda, Guitar Ranch Italy With credentials such as these, it’s no wonder Rob O’Sullivan wanted to interview them for The jam.

with Rob O’Sullivan On this beautiful Gold Coast winter’s day I find myself having a chat over coffee and lemon water with Julz Parker, Leesa Gentz and “Banjo” Leesa’s sister’s dog. Collectively you might know the girls as ‘Hussy Hicks’ who are about to embark on a European tour that will see them take in Germany, France, The Netherlands and Ireland. I spoke to the girls about life on the road, their influences, the music ‘bizz’, producing albums, booking tours and of course their home base, the Gold Coast. To begin with I asked the girls how they started their mutual musical journey.

Q. For someone reading about you for the first time, how would you describe your musical style? Leesa: That’s a tough one, we tend to go with roots/folk, but there are so many influences in what we do. I come from country background while Julz has that kind of blues/funk thing going on. We do everything from sweet ballads to “Blaaaaah!” screaming rock songs. (laughs) The newer album is more of a band sound as opposed to acoustic duo gigs we do, which is a lot broader. Contemporary folk or roots is a decent tag but it doesn’t properly describe what we do. Q. It seems to me that you run a fairly grass roots type of organization: self-promoted, self-funded, booking your own gigs, etc. Would that be a fair observation? Julz: Yes and no. We do drive the bus, but now we have people helping us. We’d say to our German agent, we are going be here during this timeframe and she would co-ordinate with agents in France and The Netherlands and together we would try and book some continuous shows. Leesa: Every now and again you’ll get an email out of the blue. Like, last year our Italian agent contacted us saying there are some festivals in Sicily that want you to come and perform, “Can you be available on these dates?” and we’d work around that. Q. There are a lot of pro’s working as touring artists: getting to see the world, meeting new people and seeing how other cultures live. For you, what would be the downside? Leesa: Missing your family and friends. Julz: Family and friends and events at home. Leesa: Being able to keep a garden. We are frustrated gardeners! You’ll plant some seed or seedlings and you can’t do any more with them (laughs)

Page 24 www.thebizzgc.com.au

Q. How did you guys start making music together? Leesa: When we first met, we had both been living overseas and when we came back to Australia we were spending heaps of time in Lennox Heads with friends who were local muso’s and jamming a lot. That’s how we first started playing music together. Julz had been working on putting a solo American tour together and she said to me, “You should just come with me!” It happened very accidently. Julz: People liked it and we went, “Well that worked!” Leesa handmade CDs from a seven-track demo I made in a lounge-room. While playing the American shows people started to buy up the CDs and were actually running out. Leesa: We were in the back of the van burning CDs and making stickers and sewing the covers together to keep up with demands! (laughs)

Q ‘Hussy Hicks’ Where did the name come from? Julz: About ten years ago it was a term of endearment that a group of our friends would use for each other. For example, “Hey Hussy, let’s go to the pub”. (Laughs) Leesa suggested we should start a blue grass band call ‘Hussy Hicks’. Leesa: This is back 2005, I had a silly idea because I thought the words sounded funny together. We just so happened to have our first original American tour looming and we needed a band name. That was the only thing we came up with. We thought we’d go with that.

Q. Let’s talk about your most recent album,“The London Sessions”. How did that come in to being? Julz: We had a bunch of songs that were mostly written in Europe during 2011. We had lived in London on and off over the years and had a lot of great musician friends still living there who had worked with us in the past. Consequently when we had a five-day hold in our schedule we saw it as an opportunity to get in the studio and lay down some tracks. By the fifth day we had managed to all song beds down with only some vocal tracks to do. We had to fly back Germany to do some shows after which we decided to fly back to London and finish the album. It all just fell in to place. Q. It seems you work predominantly as a duo. Is this always the case? Julz: There is always us. But quite often we have Tracey Stephens on bass, who does a large percentage of gigs with us and when we are in Europe we pull in Raphael White on bass who also played on “The London Sessions”. In saying that, with that album we have been touring as a full band. We are adaptable to whatever comes our way – duo, band – it keeps it interesting. We’ve been doing this for six years now so playing with other people keeps it fresh. If say, there are violin players around we’ll bring them in as well, that kind of musical family feel. As mentioned before, Tracey is our main bass player when we tour around Australia as well as Rohan Hems who’s been playing with us for years. Tracey has also done some European tours with us. Rohan is thinking of coming over for our next string of dates in Europe. Leesa: It’s a very big musical family.

Q. How would you compare the Gold Coast music scene to what you have experienced when travelling and playing overseas? Julz: The population has become large enough for our sub-culture to grow. There are a lot of small venues popping up around the place that are promoting music nights like Miami Marketta. There is a great support network for original music to be heard. Leesa: I think you could class the Gold Coast in the Brisbane to Byron Bay region. There are different music courses in that whole area that people attend, and as a result we have many great musicians, artists and songwriters. I think the Gold Coast in particular is just growing and growing. The music scene is becoming really exciting on a local level. It is certainly going to grow over the next few years and we are very happy to be part of it.

Well there you go; the ‘Hussy Hicks’ are an eclectic live performance not to be missed. Catch a show when they are back in Australia or if you find yourself in Europe over the next few months, you could catch them there. The ‘Hussy’s’ are an experience to be remembered, a point of pride for local musicians and an inspiration for up and coming arts. You can find them online at www.hussyhicks.com

Canta La Tumba Friday 26 July 8:30pm at Southport Sharks The music of Cuba, including its instruments and performing dances, is a beautiful fusion of mostly African, European and to a lesser extent Chinese melodies. Some say it’s been perhaps the most popular form of world music since the introduction of recording technology. Fronted by Natalie Richy, Canta La Tumba will bring you a beautiful performance, inspired by the sounds of greats like the Buena Vista Social Club, Afro Cuban All Stars and Santana, when they take on the Sharks stage on July 26th from 8.30pm. Natalie is joined by Murray Wall on guitar and vocals, Nik Davey on double bass, Stephen Ewart and Jimmi Halliday on trumpet and vocals and Chicken George Downes on drums. “I formed the band six years ago after returning from a second study tour to Cuba. I went over there to study carnival rhythm as I am also a teacher of percussion. I ended up hanging with a lot of traditional musos, learning songs and wanted to bring this beautiful music back to Australia,” Natalie says. “The world musician has to transport the audience to a place that is much less known to them than main stream pop music, often also in a language that they don’t speak. I want nothing more than for people to love and feel the passion behind this music as much as I do,” she continues. Canta La Tumba’s use of Spanish song, flamenco guitar, double bass, congas, drum kits and brass, promises to evoke the haunting and playful vibe of the Havana Bar and Café scene. Witness this passionate and infectious Latin show live!

This is a brand new authentic tribute to “the most dangerous band in the world”. GN’R is undeniably one of the biggest rock bands of all time. Their first LP ‘Appetite For Destruction’ became the highest selling debut album of all time, and continues to sell to this day, with new generations of youngsters idolizing the iconic rock gods. In 1993 Guns N’ Roses played the largest ever headline show in the southern hemisphere, at Melbourne’s Calder Park, which the band still talk about when recounting career highlights. “PARADISE CITY” is the closest thing you’ll get to the real deal in their prime, delivering an amazingly accurate homage to Guns N’ Roses in their world conquering era, circa 1987-1993. The show delivers 2 hours of classic GN’R, including all their mega hits and more. Complete with top shelf sound and lighting production, and detailed costume & prop design, this show is guaranteed to give punters an explosive Guns N’ Roses experience. The Bizz GC won’t be missing this one and we hope to see you there!

Unfair Fines Parking fines have been a thorn in my side since I can remember. Sometimes I’ve deserved them and sometimes I haven’t – like most of us. Parking in Albert Ave, Broadbeach and consciously running in to Koi without going to the ticket pay booth because I’m running late for lunch, well that deserves a fine and I wear that. BUT! When I’ve paid for my ticket and I’m 7 minutes late because my meeting ran overtime and there’s a fine on my window – Pfft! And when I get one in front of my own home because I’ve been parked there for more than 2 hours – PFFT! What is that all about? When moving to Chevron Island I was not informed that I needed a permit to park on the street in front of my own home. Sure, I see the 2P sign when coming on the island, but surely that’s just for the commercial area!? These signs are located right off the bridges as you enter Chevron – one is actually as you’re approaching a roundabout so it’s actually dangerous to READ the whole thing! The first ticket I received I happened to see the parking officer so ran down and asked him what he was doing. Not even looking at me he mumbled something about a 2 hour limit and if I was going to play the game I needed to play it better. Explaining I had no idea what he was talking about he acknowledged me and told me I needed to apply for a council permit to park in the street for more than 2 hours. Clearly I was a victim here yet he still put the ticket on my window whilst I stood there watching. The very next day he was back to give me another ticket. This time I yelled at him – this is blatant harassment and revenue-raising, he must be on a commission or bonus scheme of some sort, because who does that? Knowing a person lives there and hasn’t even had time to get the permit! Writing to the council brought no joy – apparently the signs on either end of the bridge are more than adequate – ample even! Never mind that there is not one single sign anywhere to be found in the residential streets, in particular the one I live in! The other day I watched as a parking officer (the very same one I think) put a ticket on the window of a ‘new’ neighbour who had left a giant sign on his windscreen explaining he had moved in the day before and was waiting for his permit to arrive. How is this fair or considered doing your job properly? Again I go back to these ‘officers’ must be on a commission or bonus scheme because, WHO DOES THAT!? We all want and need

to work but who even applies for a job that turns you in to a complete conscious-LESS meanie with no empathy whatsoever and has to stalk people and bleed them dry with parking tickets? Obviously they go through some kind of training that brain-washes them in to believing they’re just doing their job and they’re actually doing the right thing! Another ‘fine’ example of how ridiculous these officers can be is, the gentleman across the road whom had forgotten something and left his car STILL RUNNING across his own driveway whilst he went inside for 5 minutes and returned to find a fine on his window! wrong.com! The parking restrictions were ‘apparently’ introduced to stop the workers in Surfers from clogging up the residential streets of Chevron so the ‘residents’ could park in front of their own homes. This is actually a good idea in theory, though it seems some bright spark saw an opportunity of raising big dollars by ensuring the workers had to pay for parking in Surfers or get a fine AND the residents can be hit as well – CONSTANTLY – because they HAVE to park there and most people are at home for more than 2 hours at a time. If we’ve parked in a pay zone and haven’t paid, fine us. If we’ve paid for an hour and are more than 10 minutes over, fine us. If we’re parked in a No Standing area, Loading Zone, across a yellow line or in a Disabled park, go ahead and fine us – we know the rules and deserve it. BUT, if an officer KNOWS you live at the house you’re parked in front of, or he/ she knows a particular car owner works in the area and can’t help but be 20 minutes late moving the car, or if the expiry date is less than 10 minutes on the ticket, or if it’s obvious someone will be back in minutes because their car is running across their drive way – DON’T FINE! It’s common sense, common courtesy and just human! Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about this which makes it all the more wrong.com.
