Editor’s Letter Hello! Welcome to the first edition of The Bizz Gold Coast. We live in a city that has been promoted as Australia’s Playground, and we believe it is. There is always something to do and we’ll be bringing you as many options as we can fit in to one publication every fortnight. Each issue will feature a Markets Guide, so you know when and where your favourite markets are being held, and maybe you’ll find one you didn’t even know about. If you think libraries are only a place to study, read and hear Ssh all the time, think again. Gold Coast City libraries offer a plethora of activities from learning to play the Ukulele to workshops on making your jeans a perfect fit; and our regular guide will keep you updated. The Bizz Gold Coast is an avid supporter of the local music industry and will print a Gig Guide in every issue, promoting bands, duos, solo acts and events. The next two weeks are big for the music scene here with mini festivals Wallapalooza and Fisho’s Fest both happening on the June long weekend (I’m hoping there will be a courtesy bus that can take me back and forth between the two). Cooly Rocks On hits the streets of Coolangatta and we have the full program inside. Still on music, you’ll find articles and reviews on our local artists, so you know about them before they go platinum. Our city’s musicians aren’t the only artists we’ll feature; in this edition we focus on well-known Pets and their People photographer, Diana Leventhal and K9 Photography who has offered a prize for one lucky reader. Speaking of prizes, make sure you read the entire magazine to find the many giveaways on offer, including a Cooly Rocks On pack, Saligia Clothing, Napoleon makeover and more. It wouldn’t be a magazine if we didn’t include social pictures of locals out and about enjoying our city. We invite you to enjoy an easy read about local people, local issues and local fun. Thanks for supporting The Bizz Gold Coast and your feedback and suggestions are welcome at admin@thebizzg.com.au Have a great week!

Picnics, BBQ’s, quiet time and cricket aren’t the only pastimes to use our parks for. We discovered an entire array of events and activities on offer in parks across the Gold Coast, and The Bizz Gold Coast will include a Parks Guide from the next edition so you always know what’s on offer. We’ve chosen only three options for this weekend for you to consider, though you can visit www.gcparks.com.au for a full guide and details. Meet the Locals

When Not To Shazam...

Walking through Nobby Beach we noticed a poster in the window of Rare Groove Records with a gig guide for The Cave, Little Beans and Nobby’s Arc. Naturally we stopped to the get the details to include in our gig guide. Standing in the entrance was a quiet and unassuming man to whom we asked a few questions about the store and the music emanating from it, as it seemed that he worked there. His name is Anthony Tye, and we found him to be such a great local character that we had to write about him. Surrounded by vinyl, posters and music memorabilia, the sounds being played were obviously not from any of the thousands of records on display. Rather than ‘shazam’ing the song, we asked who it was. Anthony happily explained it was a Steve Wilson track produced by Alan Parsons and a whole lot of detail about the song, the album it was on, the previous album, the difference between the albums and so on. We had to hold ourselves back from offering him a job right there and then as a CD Reviewer. 30 minutes later we were still being educated about various artists from around the globe, being played tracks, and the whole while we were just gobsmacked at the never ending and well-informed reviews about each CD from his private collection that he was sharing. Anthony is able to remember every sound for every song and articulate it so well that you can actually hear it without it even being played. If you’re interested in music of any genre or era, or want to learn about the very latest sounds, then pay a visit to Rare Groove Records at Nobby Beach and spend some time with Anthony. Ensure you have at least half an hour and perhaps a coffee!

How do you wear your sins?

Lucky enough to have grown up on the Gold Coast, Saligia’s main man has always had a passion for live venues such as the Playroom (remember that one?) and the bands that played in them. This love extended to artwork and all things creative. In a modest design studio, Saligia was born whilst designing and screen-printing for local musicians and discovering a need for street-wear/stagewear with a little more punch for the artists. Humble beginnings are now a successful business operating from right here on the Gold Coast, and Saligia’s streetwear is now fashion artwork. Go to www.saligia7.com.au to see their range.

Saligia (pronounced (sah_lij_eeah) is the word created from the first letter of each deadly sin in ancient Latin. S - Superbia (pride) A - Avaritia (greed) L - Luxuria (lust) I - Invidia (envy) G - Gula (gluttony) I - Ira (wrath) A - Acedia (sloth)

WIN! A proud sponsor of the upcoming event Wallapalooza, Saligia are giving our readers the chance to win one of several LIMITED EDITION custom designed articles. We have men’s and ladies’ T-shirts, a Beanie, a lady’s Hoody, Leggings, scarf and even a pair of Sunnies to give away. To Enter, visit www.thebizzgc.com.au and go to the Competitions page. Good Luck!

I Love My Dog Yes, she is my sister-in-law – Diana Leventhal of K9 Photography – and worthy of a story in The Bizz Gold Coast. I’ll admit, at our fortnightly family breakfast at Sanctuary Cove, when she brought along her new camera stating she was going to do a course and become a photographer, I was sceptical. I mean, everyone wants to be a photographer right!? And then I’ll admit I was embarrassed that she was approaching people with dogs at Sanctuary Cove and taking photos of them – I mean OMG! Right!? Then we looked at the pictures and even those very first photographs showed a natural talent that even I could not be sceptical about. The GFC had started, her son was finishing his tertiary education at a ‘private’ school, a mortgage was on the house and none of these things were going to stop this woman pursuing something she ‘knew’ was right for her. Diana left her life-long profession in the Legal industry, did the photography course she said she was going to do, and since that breakfast five years ago, has taken K9 Photography from level to level and is already a sought-after Pets and Their People photographer. K9 Photography has been requested to conduct shoots interstate and even internationally – for a very good reason her photographs are second to none. Just have a look at the limited few we are able to publish! Anyone who knows Diana knows of her unequivocal love of animals, which is so

blatantly apparent in her photographs. Animals are not the easiest subjects to photograph – I tried for two years to get a decent picture of Pepi (my real life human boy/Toy Poodle) to no avail - Diana takes one snap and Bingo! We are running this story on Diana Leventhal and her business, K9 Photography, for a couple of reasons; Diana is a woman who relocated to the Gold Coast with her family from interstate, and found her ‘self’ here. She built her very own career while nurturing her family, and succeeded in doing something she is passionate about! What a great city we live in to have the opportunities we have to follow our dreams, even in a time of financial melt-downs. This is a GC success story! The Bizz Gold Coast is primarily about entertainment and we believe spending a couple of hours having fun with your pet(s) while a professional who understands your relationship is taking snaps and capturing your ‘moments’, is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. And thanks to the fact that I may know someone who knows Diana personally (wink wink), one lucky reader will win the experience! Details on how to enter are below and we’ll publish the winner in the next edition of The Bizz Gold Coast. If you’re not the lucky one to win this experience, and would like to know more about enjoying a session, visit www. k9photography.com.au or email Diana directly at Diana@k9photography.com.au.

Cooly Rocks On 31 May – 10 June

Poodle Oodle Parade Do you remember during the Rock 'n' roll era a dogged obsession with all things poodle swept across Australia and America? Ceramic poodles were collected, pictures of poodles popped up everywhere, thousands of ladies joined Lucille Ball in wearing hairstyles based on poodles and the famous ‘Poodle skirt’ was created. Now see Poodles and Oodles all dolled-up to the nines in the Poodle-Oodle Parade.

Australia’s Biggest 50s & 60s Nostalgia Festival Who will be Miss Cooly Rocks On 2013? Arts and Craft Markets Whether you're after hand-made fashion, jewellery, home wares, skincare, toys, fresh produce or just something unique you won't find in the shops, there is something for everyone in the Art and Craft markets.

WIN!

What do you get when you mix over 1,200 custom and classic cars and hot rods, over 50 rock’n’roll bands, a line-up of special guest international artists, a crowd of over 80,000 people and one of the most colourful, vibrant and beautiful beachside destinations in Australia? You get COOLY ROCKS ON – a jumping, jiving, revving rollercoaster of music, dancing and FUN, set to hit the streets of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads from 31 May to 10 June. COOLY ROCKS ON is Australia’s number one ‘50s and ‘60s inspired nostalgia festival, held each year in the Queensland/NSW border towns of Coolangatta on Queensland’s Gold Coast and Tweed Heads in New South Wales. Over 11 action-packed days, the border towns dish up a feast of non-stop rock’n’roll, rockabilly, swing, dancing, competitions, music and live performances. Devotees of ‘50s and ‘60s music and memorabilia travel from all over the world to attend this annual event. Throughout the festival, the streets of the border towns are crammed with rare and extraordinary pre-1970, much loved classic cars. This year, the total value of cars on display is expected to top $30 million. Nightly car cruises are a festival highlight, so take a table at one of the many streetside restaurants or cafes and watch the very entertaining, and sometimes ‘audibly competitive’, passing parade. During the Grand Finale weekend – 8 and 9 June – the two main streets are closed to traffic for one massive street party. Outdoor stages, music and dancing are the order of the day and when you can dance no more, take a wander through retro markets and stalls and check out the hundreds of cars. Six outdoor stages will be erected for the Grand Finale weekend (8 and 9 June), along with a massive beachside marquee. Almost every pub and club in the border towns will be venues for live music and dancing. Check out the cars, outdoor stages, memorabilia displays and street events for free. Mikey Robins

Dave “Hughesy” Hughes

His quick wit, sheer honesty and unmistakably Australian sense of humour saw Dave “Hughesy” Hughes charge to the front of the Australian comedy scene more than a decade ago, and is now one of the highest-selling live comedy acts in the country. One of the fastest comic minds on the scene, Hughesy’s flare for making people laugh is undisputed, not only stealing the limelight on the stage but also making a name for himself on radio and TV. His drawling Australian accent, deadpan delivery and larrikin personality has had audiences in stitches across the country. Hughes has had regular stints on hit shows Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here and Rove Live, but most recently is known for his quirky news analysis on The Project and his hilarious interrogating of AFL's elite on Before The Game

Comedian, media personality and writer, Mikey Robins has been perfecting his craft for more than two decades. Starting out in cabaret, Robins’ clever observations, quick oneliners and biting banter have seen him carve his name as one of Australia’s most in-demand entertainers. He spent seven years behind the microphone as the host of Triple J’s national breakfast show before becoming an audience favourite on Good News Week

Cal Wilson With her refreshing wittiness, commanding stage presence and snappy comebacks, it’s no surprise audiences Down Under have adopted New Zealand-born Cal Wilson as their own. Although best known for her hugely successful Melbourne International Comedy Festival shows, Wilson is also in high demand on the screen and in the corporate world. She has had stints on a series of popular TV shows, including Thank God You’re Here, Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, The Panel and SkitHouse.

Colin Lane After mastering the world of comedy as one half of infamous comic duo, Lano and Woodley, Colin Lane showed no signs of letting go of the show biz life. Parting ways in 2006 after 20 years together, Lane has proven to be an allround performer; establishing himself as not only as a killer comedian, but also an actor, TV presenter and host.

Currumbin RSL “Eat Drink and be Merry”

The Bizz Gold Coast visited the Currumbin RSL and was given these words to describe spending time at the venue. We ate, and if you classify a redlemonade as a drink then we drank, and we certainly enjoyed our afternoon. A tour of the premises revealed a number of noteworthy mentions, a standout being the produce gardens that the Chef’s, cooks and even the bar staff, take pride in using for meals, garnish and cocktails. In fact, the Chef’s specials are created around the gardens. Dining at Alley’s Restaurant gives a view of the Currumbin Alley, a waterway that entertains with stand up paddling, circling birds over jumping fish, kayaks and passers-by along the walkway who also enjoy the view. Beautifully presented meals are offered and mouth-wateringly fresh and oversized oysters are only one of the menu highlights. For light meals, you can enjoy the same outlook at The Café, and there’s even an authentic

Pizzeria named La Bocca offering traditional pizza, craft beer and specialist wine. A complimentary wine-tasting is held on the 3rd Thursday of every month. From Thursday to Sunday every week there is live entertainment, from Trivia nights, Comedy Nights, Duo’s and local bands, to featured artist performances – Phil Emmanuel playing on June 7. Kids Club is the entertainment precinct for children over 5; is open 7 days a week and supervised on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s impossible to spend time at Currumbin RSL without noticing the exceptional staff, their knowledge of the venue and its offerings, and how they all seem to be genuinely happy to be there. (A special shout out to Laura and Ryan here!) Currumbin RSL is a place you can enjoy with friends, with family and intimately. You can visit currumbinrsl.com.au for more detail and a calendar of events. Page 17 www.thebizzgc.com.au

Abby Skye “I’ve always been a full time musician” says Abby Skye when asked about her story adding, “I’ve been singing since I could speak.” Between a solo career and her band Mission X where she is writing, recording and performing live for both, Abby is certainly a ‘full time musician’. Hailing from Melbourne, her career began from the age of 5, singing at the annual school Christmas function and bringing parents and teachers to tears with her already obvious talent. There was never a question of what Abby wanted to do with her life it was always going to be music. Until the age of 14 where she picked up her first guitar, singing and poetry were her ‘things’. Abby explains, “The guitar gave me a new outlet and all of a sudden I was able to put my poetry to music.” Now she had songs and wanted to record them (Addicted being the title track of her first), and instead of finding an existing studio that cost money she didn’t have Abby set to work building her very own, calling on favours from everyone she knew, collecting paints and chipboard and materials from anywhere she could, “Everything on a struggling artist’s budget” she joked. The studio which included a band room for rehearsals worked so well she had musicians from everywhere as far as Queensland using her facilities and her abilities to help produce their songs, though it was taking too much time from her own music which is why she built it in the first place. Word was out about Abby Skye and she was being beckoned to the ‘Goldy’, as she calls it, by local musicians encouraging her to perform to audiences here. The decision was made to give it a go, and closing the studio she made the trek north to be greeted with random ‘high-5’s’ on the street, giving a confidence that this was a good move.

As a Solo Artist Having been trained in Opera at the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts), being able to belt out a rock tune like few female artists can and then stripping back to raw, simplistic and elegant vocals for a more contemporary tune, Abby Skye’s musical diversity excels in these styles and every genre between. Currently working on a solo album Abby tells us “My acoustic/soul/spiritual/political messages will be heard in a new light. It’s going a bit electro and it works.” The yet to be named album is due to be released in 2013.

Mission X Commonly referred to as ‘The Next Big Thing’ Mission X is undoubtedly the Gold Coast’s most popular band, with Abby Skye leading the hard-hitting rock outfit. As a band, Mission X has been a work in progress for almost two years. Abby explained that being new to the Gold Coast made it difficult to find a line-up, and how Tony Ferrini from TNT Sound & Lighting Services (and also the infamous sound guy from PA Bar) was instrumental in helping her find the best session musicians to perform at the string of gigs that had already been booked. Rick Lyons, a solid local bassist with energy to burn, was Abby’s first full time recruit to the band, and together they held a documented series of auditions to find the ideal guitarist to complete the ‘front-line’. Shredders, pickers and strummers came from far and wide with one standout performer who left no doubt in Abby or Rick’s minds that ‘he was the one’. Chris Goodridge is a well-known and ‘respected’ shredder from the Gold Coast who is most notably known for his compelling on-stage presence and incredible talent for playing guitar in other popular rock outfit, Downlode. The three are now looking for a drummer as the heart of the group and Abby says “Recording for the band is on hold until this important position is filled.” When asked about what short-term goals are set for Mission X once the complete outfit is in place, apart from recording their first album, an enthusiastic Abby Skye stated “We want the gig on the Footy Show!” explaining “We’re the perfect fit and it would be so much fun! We’d like some supporting gigs for major acts and I think playing half-time shows at footy matches would be a blast.” Visit www.abbyskye.com.au to keep updated on her and Mission X’s progress.

Walk Off The Earth - R.E.V.O. Although this is their 3rd album, “Walk Off The Earth” have only recently gained main stream popularity after covering Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which now has over 150 million views on You Tube. R.E.V.O. proves “Walk Off The Earth” have quite a bit more up their sleeves. With three vocalists who play 20 different instruments, WOTE create a style of folk-rock that mixes in pop melodies with reggae, ska, alt-country guitar and even a little rap. R.E.V.O.(an acronym for the band’s motto “Realise Every Victory Outright”) begins with the title track and opening declaration “R.E.V.O.” followed by the striking anthemic “Red Hands” a song about taking responsibility for your actions and not always trying to blame other people when something goes wrong. “Gang of Rhythm” is a more

upbeat folk pop song while “Speeches” demonstrates the beautiful signature harmonies of WOTE’s three vocalists and also features a great horn section. “Sometimes” blends pop with reggae and Gianni’s rapping. “Shake” is pop rock WOTE style. “These Times” is a rock song that starts off quite slowly but grows as the song progresses. The sweet as summer air “Summer Vibe” is a catchy little tune that left me wanting for warmer weather. “Somebody That I Used to Know” is also here along with “Money Tree” one of their earlier releases. They finish with “No Ulterior Motives” a slower song that has a very laid back reggae sound. The whole album has a bright summery feel, full of sharp harmonies, brilliant arrangements and solid memorable songwriting. The standout tracks for me are “Red Hands” “Speeches” and “These Times” 4/5

Tremonti - All I was Mark Tremonti is a rare talent who can not only shred, but also write fantastic songs. Here on his debut solo album 'All I Was' he shows why he is reguarded as one of the best guitarists around today. 'All I Was' features Tremonti on lead vocals/lead guitar, Brian Marshall on bass alongside former Submersed members Eric Friedman (backing vocals/rhythm guitar) and Garrett Whitlock (drums). Mark's voice is the biggest surprise on the album. The lyrics and vocal delivery sit really well with the instrumental parts of the songs. The sound of the album could best be described as modern hard rock mixed with elements of thrash metal. The composition is excellent, the tone is perfect and the drums are like a force driving the music forward. Tremonti started work on the album back in 2010 after realising he was

AZREAL - Better Dead AZREAL have managed to combine and successfully develop a cross of many different styles of metal on "Better Dead" "Walking On Your Grave" the first track on the cd opens with some eerie background noises but they are soon replaced by a barrage of frenetic thrash metal and in your face lyrics. "Believe" starts off with a short catchy riff and continues along with almost the same intensity as the first song. There are some great vocals here alongside thrashing guitar and the all-powerful blasts from the drum kit - this is probably

my favourite song on the cd. "Servants of Decay" one of their earlier releases, is a more groove driven track and Luke Hosking's Vocals here remind me a little of early 'Dez' Fafara (Coal Chamber). "Better Dead" the title track, builds its intensity slowly into an all-powerful driving chorus with a short but dynamic guitar solo towards the end of the song. The next two songs "So Long" and "Weather The Storm" are very Pantera-esque, only with far more brutal vocals. "Never Survive(Titty F#cked)" has a thrash metal almost punk rock sound and features some fine shredding from Andrew 'Jimmy' Glinster. The first half of "Dawning of

writing a lot of songs that didn't really fit with either of his two bands – Creed and Alter Bridge. His love for 80s metal is present throughout the album and especially on 'Wish You Well'. His ability to write haunting, clean guitar riffs reminiscent of his early Creed days is present in 'The Things I've Seen' and 'New Way Out'. His awesome vocal melodies can be found throughout choruses in songs such as 'Giving Up' and 'Decay' (My favourite song on the album). 10 of the 12 songs contain solos, with 'So You're Afraid', 'Leave it Alone' and 'All I Was' being some of the best guitar solos I have heard this decade! If you are a fan of Creed, Alter Bridge or even just thrash metal or hard rock, do yourself a favour and go out and get yourself a copy, if you don’t already have it. The bottom line is 'All I Was' stands out as almost perfect from beginning to end. Tremonti deserves to be hailed with the greats. 4.5/5

Consciousness" could easily be mistaken for an "Alice in Chains" Song, but about two minutes into the song the heaviness kicks in, all thoughts of AIC are replaced by AZREAL's style of groove infused thrash metal. Inspired by some great metal bands including Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura, White Zombie & Machine Head, AZREAL brand their music as an extension for their frustration with all things religious and conformist; for as AZREAL claims, they are the downfall of the human race. Great Aussie Metal, go get some. 4/5

wrong.com Tootingman I call him the ‘Tooting Man’, because every few days that is all I am subjected to from my home and office – hours of cars tooting, honking and blowing their horns right outside my window as they ignorantly drive past, oblivious to the nerve-wrecking disturbance they are causing. Locals will no doubt have seen this guy over the many years that he has been literally ‘standing’ for his cause – or what he believes is his cause, or ‘a’ cause.. I’m only aware of two (2) locations – Sundale (now Southport) Bridge, and on Chevron Island at one or the other of the two bridges, which is where I am. The ‘cause’, from what I can gather is to abolish compulsory voting (which is actually another topic for wrong.com in my opinion). Personally, I think there is some merit in what he’s putting out there, BUT he’s going the wrong.com way about putting it out there. Standing on the street, outside a residential area, getting people to honk their horns is not achieving a single thing – apart from annoying residents and workers with the noisy intrusions. The ‘Tooters’ I’m sure, have forgotten they’ve even tooted let alone what they were tooting about within seconds of passing, so again this is a pointless exercise achieving NOTHING!

nothing better to do with his time than to stand for hours in a big painted coat and hat in the blazing sun getting people to ‘toot’ for something they’ll do nothing more about than ‘toot’ and annoy the bejeezus out of me, other residents and workers.

Someone said to me, “Got to admire 20 years of commitment to any cause” and I agree.. sort of..

I say, “Go to Canberra and stand outside Parliament House and make your point to those who can actually do something about it!”

If he was actually achieving something, ANYTHING, I’d be in full support, but he’s NOT! All I see is a man who obviously has

The Road at the end of Bermuda Street Driving to Tweed Heads with a friend recently, we took the Bermuda Street route to the highway. People who drive the particular stretch of road I’m referring to, will already know what is wrong.com about it. Those who haven’t driven it, I implore you to do so and tell me you didn’t think you had a flat tyre! After crossing the Reedy Creek Road intersection, it’s only a matter of seconds before the rumbling from your shock absorbers that seem to have gone in to some state of convulsion has you looking in to your side mirrors as if you need glasses, trying to see your tyres that you know you can’t see, thinking “Oh No, surely I don’t have a flat tyre”. Common sense tells you it’s just a bad patch of road, but as you travel along the turbulence seems greater and you become convinced you do actually have a flat. Naturally, you put on your indicator and pull over at the safest spot to do so (well most of us do), exit the vehicle and walk around it in seek of this tyre that has flattened and caused so much commotion. Mixed emotions follow. Relief that you don’t have to call RACQ, a friend or pull out the jack and change it yourself; and annoyance that you’re on the side of the road and have just wasted precious minutes that can never be returned. Relief wins as you get back in to the car, buckle up and start the engine. This is when a tad of nervousness sets in, as you wonder if everything is going to be okay as you set off on your path again. Immediately, your fear of not checking your tyres properly when you stopped is realised, and once again you feel as if you’re on the old Wild Wave roller coaster at Sea World,

and wondering where on earth you’re going to pull over now that you’re just about on the M1. As you veer left and ascend the small hill leading on to the highway, you’re almost praying to make it to the emergency lane. Then the ‘wonder’ cement road that never needs maintenance ceases and you’re back on bitumen! Your car has never felt so smooth! Over the years I’ve driven that road many times, and although wise to the road now, still question if maybe I have a flat.
