Letter to the Editor Hi Natasha, Congratulations on the first edition of The Bizz - was enjoying it all then came the intolerance re our Tooting Man ! He has a name - perhaps you might have spent 10 minutes of your precious time to actually TALK to him - Daniel Seeto - and find out for your readers what it is that motivates him in his quest to promulgate his ideas.

Post-election no doubt, he will return to highlighting other favourite topics - keeping the banks honest for example - but next time you’re close enough to take an angry pic of him, please speak to him - he won’t bite you ! Good luck for The Bizz - I look forward to Issue No2. Regards, Paul (Chevron Island)

Hi Paul! Thank you for your email and support of The Bizz Gold Coast, we hope you are able to enjoy and give feedback on many more issues. Paul, we appreciate your feedback and will indeed talk to him when the opportunity arises, as we believe it’s a great local story, and are actually very surprised that after countless Google searches found nothing about him. Your letter has sparked a new intrigue, thank you. In the wrong.com column, I did state there is merit in what he is doing, though the ‘tongue in cheek’ article is mainly about the disruption it causes due to the location he chooses to ask motorists to honk their horns, not his actual cause. I stand by my opinion that this

practice is achieving nothing, or very little. For me personally (as well as other residents in the area) it is very frustrating, inconvenient and nerve-wrecking. We are trying to rest, work and be comfortable in our homes/businesses and constant ‘tooting’ becomes very stressful and disruptive. Building awareness is one thing, though most motorists don’t have time to even see what his message is truly about, and honking doesn’t produce any results. There are many other ways to voice opinions and beliefs that are more conducive to achieving results that don’t involve me having to take a sedative lol ;-) Thanks again Paul. Have a great day! Natasha.

“We’re bringing back the party!”

The ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 October 25 - 27 V8 Supercars drivers James Courtney and Tim Slade, and Chief Operating Officer Shane Howard, spoke to The Bizz Gold Coast about this year’s ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 event taking place October 25 - 27. “We’re bringing back the party!” proclaims Mr Howard, going on to explain how the event will be a large scale festival. A major parade will be introduced and take place the week prior to the V8 Supercars weekend spectacular to set the mood, and be a free to the public affair. He went on tell us, “We want to bring the ‘glamour’ back to the event and have brought in Roscoe Dickinson to run the ‘Miss V8 Supercars’ competition which will be held nationwide with the finals here on the Gold Coast”. Dickinson was responsible for the famous ‘Miss Indy’. Racing, parade, glamour and more! We asked for the scoop on the headlining bands for the Friday and Saturday nights entertainment and were told they are in the final negotiations with the artists so couldn’t go on record. We did get a couple hints being there would definitely be a bigname Rock ‘n Roll band, and one of the world’s biggest Funk/ Soul/Pop artists of right now and that it’s a “HIM”. The official announcement should be made on July 24. On the future of V8 Supercars here on the Gold Coast Howard told us, “This is the last year of the current contract and we are in negotiations for the next one”. He explained that the

Page 6 www.thebizzgc.com.au

Gold Coast economy relies heavily on Tourism and Small Business and that it has never been as important to have an event portfolio that supports them, “We believe this event does that with it bringing in $37m a year to the Gold Coast economy”. V8 Supercars are also working closely with Surfers Paradise Alliance to ensure local businesses are being looked after. Mercedes and Nissan will join the circuit for the first time here on the Gold Coast, and the Heavy Haulage Australia Racing team driver Tim Slade is proud to be taking the wheel. Holden Racing Team driver, James Courtney joked as he gave his colleague a friendly nudge, “Instead of just beer tents, there’ll be champagne tents for Mercedes fans”. Both drivers reside on the Gold Coast and are looking forward to racing on home ground with James citing “It’s such a picturesque track for everyone, with the beaches on one side and the skyline on the other”. Tim tells us he’s excited about the event bringing back the party atmosphere that made it so successful in the past and how the Gold Coast is perfect for it. He says, “We have the best of both worlds here because it is a party town and it also caters for the families”.

“I’d rather be on the track than on the roads.” Asked about their thoughts on the new ‘hooning’ laws in Qld, both were eager to talk about promoting safety first and how racing and hooning are two completely different things with James stating, “People don’t realise how dangerous the ‘roads’ are. Anything we can do to build awareness about the dangers on the roads is a plus”. He says, “I’d rather be on the track than on the roads. When we’re on the track we’re all going in the

same direction and are equipped with safety gear”. Tim agrees whole-heartedly and explains the stringent safety regulations that have to be met across the board, “the cars, the barriers, the placement of barriers, what we wear, the track itself, everything”. CEO Shane Howard on the subject says, “We’re in to racing not hooning. This is a very technical sport and hooning and racing are in no way related”.

Now in its 23rd year, this year’s ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 is going to be huge and we can’t wait for the action. Parks Gold Coast City Parks Active and Healthy Program is on a short break and all activities will recommence on Monday 15 July when the new 2013/14 Active and Healthy Program is released. The full program will be found at www.gcparks. com.au. In the meantime, we suggest grabbing your walking shoes and exploring some of the many parks and reserves our city has to offer.

Benowa

Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens, Ashmore Road (opposite Benowa High School) There’s an experience for everyone - smell and touch plants and flowers at the Sensory Garden, take a mangroves to mountain walk, check out our local species, visit the native Butterfly Garden or smell the roses in the Rose Garden. Fun for the whole family includes a stroll on the boardwalks around the lake, a children’s playground or a picnic in one of the many picnic areas. The Friends' Centre, is now open, your hub for visitor information. The Centre is manned daily by our wonderful Friends volunteers between 10am and 2pm. Guided walks are available by prior appointment. The Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens are open year round, from dawn to dusk each day. There is visitors parking on site, and entry is free. The Gardens are located off Ashmore Road, Benowa, opposite Benowa State High School.

Coombabah

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area, Shelter Road (southern access) and Rain Tree Glen (western access) Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area protects more than 1200 hectares of wetland, Eucalypt forest, salt marsh and mangrove swamp habitat. Lake Coombabah and its estuarine system are important coastal wetlands and migratory water bird habitats. The area is ideal for short walks, bird watching, animal spotting and plant identification and gives you an opportunity to appreciate an ecologically significant area.

Springbrook

Apple Tree Park, Springbrook Road Apple Tree Park is on the Springbrook plateau within the Springbrook Conservation Area. This conservation area has spectacular views across the Numinbah Valley, dissected by Waterfall Creek and Nerang River further west. The site marks one of the entry points into the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk, a project between Queensland Parks and Wildlife and Gold Coast City Council. It aims to provide the community with a connection between Springbrook National Park and Lamington National Park, with Numinbah and Springbrook Conservation Areas forming a link between these two World Heritage-listed parks. This park at the top of the Springbrook range is the access point for many of the amazing walks in the Springbrook area. The park itself is a lovely little park, with a brand new amenities building, bbq’s and picnic tables. If the kids are used to the foreshore parks alone, pack the car and head up the Springbrook range for this treat. A quiet, sheltered, green green park awaits! Most days birds such as kookaburras can be found within metres of the visitors, resting on the arms of the trees. Just stop and listen to the wildlife and the leaves flapping in the breeze! Compositions by Dedman Left: Katana Dedux Right: “My Death”

Dedman and Digita l Art Digital art, referred to as New Media Art, is becoming more recognised and credited as being an artistic practice, in much the same way that electronically produced music has become accepted in the musical arts society. Primarily used in mainstream media by film-makers for special effects and graphic artists, the most notably known ‘artist’ for using digital art is Andy Warhol. Warhol created an image of Debbie Harry back in 1985 which was captured in monochrome from a video camera. He added colour with the use of flood fills in a graphics program call ProPaint. Local New Media Artist, Dedman, has been producing digital art for almost 10 years, winning numerous awards including several ‘Image of

Page 12 www.thebizzgc.com.au

the Week’ prizes from accredited runtimedna. com. An avid art enthusiast Dedman says, “I can’t draw! That’s why I got in to this.” Digital art is a hobby for Dedman who tells us there’s not a lot of money in it, “People don’t buy they just take the image off the internet. They don’t understand why it’s grainy and poor quality when they print it out”. He adds, “It’s very hard to get through to people that it’s not photography”. Produced entirely on computer, Dedman uses two programs – Poser which sets up the subjects and clothes them and then a program to render them. Likening it to having Barbie Dolls he jests, “They arrive naked and you dress them!” On a more serious

note he explains that artists for fantasy books, cd covers and the like usually do a render and then paint over their work again in Photoshop, “That’s not how I work. People comment on the post-work on my art

but there’s no post-work!” When asked how long it takes for one image, the answer was “How long is a piece of string?” “For a simple portrait maybe 2-3 hours, for a complex scene with several characters and scenery 4-6 hours; then there is actual render time for the computer to do its work. Most pics only take a few minutes but I’ve had some take 48 hours.” Dedman has a Sci-Fi/Fantasy theme, though tells us, “I get stuck on a theme and will do 10 images and go, ‘I’m over that now, I’ll move on now’.” At one stage he even created a fictitious band and produced a number of album covers for them. Another stage was a 50s theme. We’ve featured only two pieces of work by Dedman.

- Aaron Gomes, Directeur Général, Jupiters Hôtel et Casino Or if you’re not French (it sounds divine though, does it not!) “Jupiters Hotel and Casino is thrilled to welcome LumiAir – a Cirque Extraordinaire to Jupiters Theatre as we continue to focus on attracting only the very best International and National entertainment to the Gold Coast." - Aaron Gomes, Managing Director, Jupiters Hotel and Casino (June 2013) LumiAir premiers the launch of over 40 International and local performers to WOW and bedazzle you, in a way that only the Cirque methodology of performance and ranging of explicit

performance disciplines can provide. The Production stars Gold Coast’s very talented Lucia Carbines as the Character ‘Diamond’ in the lead role. We are treated to an eclectic performance with her multitude of roles that unleash her gymnastic and nubile performance skills. Under the envelopment of sublime performance, skills, stage, lighting and blended scripting provided to the audience, it has jaw opening, white knuckled 'what will they do next?' excitement. The most beautiful parts of the performance are easily described; • The seamless choreography, lighting and sound. • The tempo change from the gentle sounds of the singers and the eloquence of Ballet dancers, to the heart pounding performance of the hair raising high larkers, as they work their acrobatic magic without ropes or nets. • The unforgettable frolicking of the trio

dancing Jesters • The swan songs of the mistress vocalist ‘Jenna Dearness-Dark’ Needless to say, the production echoes the attitude of localised talent supreme, provisioning all that is world quality. Local and International artists combine to present a performance that leaves the audience to a breath-hold standing ovation on many occasions. If you could star this, it goes without saying, SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT. Performing for limited weeks, get in while you can folks, for a life remembered experience. Produced and Directed by Susan Porrett, and Choreographed by Daniella Winter and Anthony Ikin. Review by Clinton Meskanen Now showing at Jupiters Hotel and Casino for a limited time. CD Reviews

by Mark Robart

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories The robots have landed, vocoders set to stun and ready to reign again. The highly anticipated return of "Daft Punk" sees them collaborate with some legendary musical names such as Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Paul Williams and Todd Edwards on this retro-influenced album. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Hoemm-Christo started making music together back in 1993 as members of the rock band "Darlin’". Upon hearing the band's first record, a journalist described their music as “a daft punky thrash.” Shortened, this became the name of their next project. "Daft Punk" is noted for their use of visual components associated with their musical productions. The duo would usually wear masks to hide their appearances; these were later replaced by ornate robot costumes. In 1997 they released the critically acclaimed debut album "Homework". In 2001 "Discovery" became even more successful, driven by the club singles "One More Time", "Digital Love", and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". In March 2005, the duo released their next album "Human After All" to mixed reviews, however, the singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" achieved some moderate success. This time round we see the band turning away from their trusted synthesizers and drum machines for something more live, something featuring disco god Nile Rogers on guitar, Nathan East on bass and Omar Hakim and John (JR) Robinson on drums. "Random Access Memories" is the fourth studio album from the French electronic duo and features no electronics except for a modular synthesizer and some vintage vocoders. It also uses only one sample, (A snippet from the Sherbs' "We Ride Tonight" on the final track, "Contact"). The album was recorded in Paris, London and New York with an orchestra, a children's choir and featuring vocal performances from Pharrell Williams, Julian Casablancas and Panda Bear (Noah Lennox). The extremely catchy “Give Life Back to Music” is as much a mission statement from the band as it is the album’s crashing and funky opening track. The dreamy, atmospheric sound of "The Game of Love" captures the mood of bittersweet melancholy where dancing offers a momentary escape from the heartbreaks of life. "Giorgio By Moroder" is a documentary of sorts. Where the disco godfather narrates his life story, as the music vividly brings to mind each decade he describes. At the same time building from an operatic string section into a classic synth-pop finale. The easy mid-tempo groove of “Instant Crush” submits to a rapid and memorable chorus. Julian Casablancas(The Strokes) features on vocals (taken up in pitch with the use of a vocoder). The extravagantly funky “Get Lucky” is the first single off the album, Pharrell Williams performs vocal duties here and on “Lose Yourself to Dance” a playful vocal tussle between himself and the robots. “Touch” is a grand suite of prog, disco and broadway. Featuring Paul Williams, (co-writer of “Rainbow Connection” from "The Muppet Movie" in 1979) now in his 70's, croons away while the track abruptly shifts from his hoarse solo performance to piano and horn driven dance, to a children’s choir and a string section. Album closer "Contact" is one of Daft Punk's most upbeat complex and bold tracks of their career, and goes from an astronaut describing something ‘out there’ to keyboards, drum solos and a crescendo that hits you at light speed. This is definitely my favourite track. As the album title suggests, not only are these sounds their memories, but the total recall of electronic music's pathways and connective tissues. 3.5/5

Baby Animals - This is Not the End Back in 1985 DeMarchi started recording for EMI as a solo artist in London. Frustrated by this experience, she returned home to Perth and in 1989 formed “Dee Dee and the Rockmen” with drummer Frank Celenza. A year later they founded the Baby Animals with guitarist Dave Leslie and bassist Eddie Parise. The group’s self-titled debut LP went multi-platinum in Australia, though failed to really receive any major overseas success. Not long after the release of their 2nd album, 1993’s “Shaved and Dangerous” Baby Animals American label Imago folded due to their financial backer “Bertelsmann Music Group” pulling funding. Then when DeMarchi’s throat surgery forced the band to cut their tour short, Baby Animals called it a day and disbanded. DeMarchi later wed “Extreme” guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, relocated to the USA and released a solo album “Telelove”in 1999. The band reformed in 2009 and after a couple of tours and a few line up changes “Baby Animals” now consists of Suze DeMarchi, Dave Leslie, Dario Bortolin and Mick Skelton. It has been more than 20 years since their last full length studio album however “Baby Animals” are certainly back with a vengeance, with big guitars, big drums and an even bigger voice. Reforming in 2009 and after a couple of tours and a few line-up changes “Baby Animals” now consists of Suze DeMarchi, Dave Leslie, Dario Bortolin and Mick Skelton. The band has decided to release the new album independently. “The music business is so stale right now, we wanted to do it differently.” says DeMarchi. On “This is not the End” DeMarchi and Leslie have either penned or co-written all 11 songs. The album was produced by ARIA awardwinning producer David Nicholas (INXS, Ash), and Nick DiDia (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots) and is currently No.6 on the iTunes Australian Rock Charts. “This is not the End” opens with the 1st single off the album “Email” a solid rock track that draws on the break-up of Suze’s marriage with Nuno Bettencourt. “Bonfires” and “Under Your Skin” show Baby Animals have lost none of the dynamics they had during and throughout the 90’s. The tempo slows down a little with “Stitch” a song that was actually composed by Nuno back in 2009.”Invisible Dreamer” and “Warm Bodies” are almost verging into ballad-esque territory, although with a Dave Leslie guitar solo towards the end of “Invisible Dreamer” that mixes it up a little. They step it up again and the rock kicks back in on “Things That Make You Stay”. “Hot Air Balloon” one of their earlier songs recorded back in 2009 and “Priceless” could almost be put into the pop/rock genre. You’ll probably be hearing these tunes on the radio in the near future. “Got it Bad”, my favourite track on the album encompasses everything that “Baby Animals” are about, good old Aussie rock at its best. They take us out on a little slower note with the light and bubbly “Winters Day” leaving you wishing that this was not the end. “This is Not the End” was released on May 31 and is out now, great album, don’t make us wait another 20 years for the next one. 4/5

Rick Hollis Local musician/artist Rick Hollis has been performing original music on the Gold Coast since the late 80’s. Some of you will remember the Pumpernickels who won the ’91 Battle of the Bands at the infamous Playroom, or Nemesis who enjoyed a large and loyal local fan-base. Today Rick Hollis is an original artist writing and producing his own music; playing to sold out audiences in the Killer Queen show, and part of popular local covers band Remedy. “Dirty Little Movie” is Rick’s self-produced CD and when asked about what genre he feels it fits in to states, “Guitronica!” “I love writing songs on guitar, but I like making cool beats and stuff to go with it” he says, going on to explain that he is comfortable with both hard rock and electronic and that his music is a definite cross between them both. “If the genre of ‘Guitronica’ didn’t exist before, it does now.” The album is available on iTunes and bandcamp.com which Rick explains has a better margin for artists. “You don’t make much money on the sale of songs these days” he says “it’s in live performances and merchandise, so bandcamp.com is great.”

Writing and producing his own material and performing in two bands aren’t enough for the motivated musician. For the last 15 years he has produced many other artists’ songs, most recently one for Grae Haines which has been picked up by Coca Cola and will be all over their next social media campaign. Not to be outdone, Rick has one of his own songs being used in a documentary by the National Geographic channel, with another having been picked up for use in a new fishing program. In the position of being able to produce his own songs/albums and film clips Hollis is already working on his next album and tells us we can expect its release in a few months. Yet to be named, it will take the same direction as “Dirty Little Movie” in the ‘Guitronica’ genre. Currently unsigned Rick is looking for a label explaining “I’m not a businessman, I’m a musician and I want to be creative.” facebook.com/rickhollismusic twitter.com/rick_hollis http://rickhollis.bandcamp.com/album/dirty-little-movie https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/dirty-little-movie/ id566645831

Indicators are a legal requirement! It’s a lever that is placed directly behind your steering wheel and protrudes to the right or left of the wheel, positioned in perfect reach for anyone’s hand to simply push down with no effort at all. This protruding lever is used for the purpose of letting drivers around you know that you are planning to make a turn or slowing to pull over, hence the name ‘Indicator’. It sounds logical and practical, and I vaguely remember it being a MUST USE to pass my driving test as it was a ‘legal requirement’. At one point I thought it was a ‘trend’ for big luxury car drivers, and could often be seen yelling out my window that driving an expensive car doesn’t mean you own the roads. At other times the yelling consisted of telling people they should not have a licence after a certain age if they can’t remember to indicate. Then there was chastising P-platers’ for their ignorance, bellowing at people for their sheer laziness and

screaming at those that are just in so much of a hurry they simply don’t have time to indicate. Apart from the fact that most of these offenders couldn’t actually hear me, I was raising my blood pressure and damaging my vocal chords in vain. Subsequently, after countless times of sudden breaking, swerving and manoeuvring to avoid collision with drivers who feel they don’t need to practice the lost art of signalling other drivers, I began thinking that perhaps the good old-fashioned indicator is no longer a prerequisite for driving Logging on to the Department of Transport and Main Roads website I was surprised to find that indeed the conveniently placed protruding stick is still a legal requirement, and that in fact the fine for not indicating is a whopping $66 and 2 demerit points. So if indicating is law, makes sense and is easy to do, why do so many drivers fail to do it? wrong.com!
