CABBAGE TREE SWAMP TO EDEN PARK Eden Park has made its home in the heart of New Zealand sport ever since its beginnings as a flooded marshland more than 100 years ago. Cabbage Tree Swamp was its name, a fitting description for the small lake encircled by Cabbage Trees. The area would flood in winter and was therefore only suitable for the local Kingsland Cricket Club to use during the summer months. In 1911, Auckland Cricket Association bought the land and the Auckland Rugby Union leased it the following year. By 1914, the first rugby games were being played on the field. As the years went by, the land was developed to the point of sporting sustainability and by 1921 the first All Blacks test match was played against the

Springboks. More than a century later, the sporting ground has been developed and redeveloped to host the 1950 Empire Games, to see the All Blacks lift the Rugby World Cup trophy twice and to become the home stadium for the Blues. Blues and All Blacks great Tony Woodcock has particularly fond memories of Eden Park. He’s been with the Blues since 2002, earning 130 caps for the team and playing most of his home games at the fortress. He will also be remembered for scoring the only New Zealand try in the tense and tight final between New Zealand and France at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. “There’s a lot of good memories there,” he said. “The history and the atmosphere that the crowd brings, it’s uplifting.

As a ground it’s been pretty good to us.” “Leading up to and starting the game, it was the most nerve racking experience,” Tony says of the 2011 World Cup experience. “But once the game starts, you’re right in the middle and you don’t have too much time to think.” The Blues opened the 2015 season at QBE Stadium, but now we’re returning to our Fortress for the remaining home games. We’re also bringing back an old tradition this year with the KFC Curtain Raisers – a chance for secondary school First XV teams to compete before the Blues match-up. On 10th April Takapuna Grammar take on Macleans College. Mount Albert Grammar School will play Sacred Heart College in the next KFC Curtain Raiser on 2 May.

TWO INTERNATIONAL SPORTING STARS Dan Bowden has been playing representative rugby for more than 10 years, representing Northland, Otago and Auckland; playing for the Highlanders, Crusaders, London Irish and Leicester Tigers; and now he’s back in Auckland with the Blues. He’s travelled the world with either the 10 or 12 on his back, earning accolades throughout and even an Aviva Premiership championship victory. What you may not know, is that each of these achievements has been equalled, and some say bettered, by the success of Dan’s other half. Hayley Bowden has long been a respected name in the international football world. She captained the Football Ferns for four years, played 92 international games, earning 10 goals in the process, and she was the fourth New Zealand woman in history to earn 50 caps for the national team. She captained the team through the 2008 Olympic Games and followed through with another Olympics in 2012. When Hayley joined Dan in England in 2010, she signed a one-year contract with Chelsea and played in the inaugural Super League championship.

in 2013 who finished 6th on the table. Now the couple has returned to New Zealand for Dan to pursue a career with the Blues and Hayley to continue playing football and to raise their 14-month-old son, Braxton. In most circumstances, one half would pursue their sport and the other would remain an at-home support. But not so for these two sporting talents. “It’s great having a partner who understands the time commitment and the different emotions that come with professional sport,” said Dan. “Being supportive is probably the best thing about this.” Both Dan and Hayley have needed to travel a lot for games and training, their relationship even started by distance when Dan moved down to Otago to play for the Highlanders. Back in November 2012, the couple were married in New Zealand. Of course, for two professional sport stars, the wedding was squeezed in to the schedules of their respective clubs. Hayley had flown home earlier, but Dan was in the middle of his northern hemisphere

“It was a great experience to be playing at the elite professional level where the standard of football was very competitive.” Following on from Chelsea, Hayley played for Lincoln Ladies

season with the Leicester Tigers. He flew from the UK to NZ on a Wednesday, got married on the Friday, and then returned on the Sunday. By Wednesday evening, he

was walking on to the field for Leicester. “I came off the bench, but then got yellow carded for a dangerous tackle,” he said. “I’d had too many red bulls.” “It was tough,” said Dan, describing the mad rush to fit in around the team’s schedule. “But that’s the nature of the beast.” Leicester went on to win that game and then the Aviva Premiership. “There’s a lot of time management going on,” described Dan. “You’ve got to be in so many different places and the first and second five positions require a lot of analysis as well.” Hayley agrees, adding that it takes a lot of planning, especially when the couple are competing overseas. But, she adds, “no matter what our son comes first, so we always make sure he’s happy.” “Marrying a sportsperson is unique,” she continued. “You both know how to cope with the different emotions that come with winning and losing in sport at the top level.”

BANNER WAVED FOR JEROME KAINO When Jerome Kaino hit 100 caps for the Blues, the region celebrated. Faces were painted, flags were waved and the crowd came decked out in their Blues jerseys. But one thing stood out in the crowd – a hand painted banner, depicting Jerome Kaino and the words #kaino100. The creator David Toailoa has been a Blues fan since 1997, the year of the Michael Jones, Zinzan Brooke, and Carlos Spencer. It was also the year that David’s brothers won the Auckland Secondary Schools 1A First XV competition with Otahuhu College. “I wasn’t allowed to play,” said David. “My brothers played so well but didn’t do so well at school.” “But I sneaked in a few games,” he said. Instead, David’s focus was on his art, developing a passion for painting and realism that has extended

beyond adolescence. After graduation from Otahuhu College in 2002, David was accepted in to Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design. “I’m into Realism but with hints of imperfection.” “It’s different to what people

WESTIE PIES: SUPPORTING JUNIOR RUGBY Like a pie, love a Westie is the mantra of Stefan Crooks’ Westie Pies. The idea to name a pie after a West Auckland local came about when Stefan was having a coffee outside Pak’n’Save on Lincoln Road. He looked around and observed, “These Westies love a pie.” “That’s how it was born, simple as that,” he said. Within 48 hours a rough design was made and Westie Pies went to market six weeks later. That’s how Stefan works; he gets things done using the resources in his hand. He’s the managing director at Natural Foods, of which Westie Pies is a subset, and has been using the company to promote local sport especially rugby.

Stefan has lived in Titirangi for the past three years, Auckland for 16, and has thrown himself in to the local rugby community. He’s the chairman of Suburbs Rugby Club in New Lynn and Avondale, using it as an “avenue to be able to give back.” Stefan was “born and bred into the sport,” playing tighthead prop and has retained a strong connection with the sport. “It was all about mates and community and that sense of community,” he said. “As communities we’ve kind of lost touch with that because everybody is so time poor.” So Stefan is on a mission to give time and support to CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

the younger generations, creating opportunities for the future stars to compete. He’s the chairman of Suburbs Rugby Club in New Lynn and Avondale. Westie Pies sponsored a secondary schools 7s tournament in October, 2014 at Shadbolt Park which was won by Wesley College. Westie Pies has a 2 year commitment with the Blues, sponsoring the Westie Pies Blues Secondary Schools 10s Invitational tournament which was inaugurated at QBE Stadium on 7 March this year. “Our ultimate goal is to let people know there are companies that want to grow youth,” Stefan explained. “You want these superstars to develop and not forget where they come from. Creating environments that aren’t all about egos.”

GPS UNITS MONITORING TRAINING They’ve been called training bras and crop tops. They’ve sparked conversation and confusion amongst Blues fans, some wondering why the team needs to wear the black vests during training. Now we’re here to answer some of your questions about the black vests worn by the team during training. The vests support live GPS units, a new initiative by the Blues coaching staff to more closely monitor the team’s training. Head strength and conditioning coach, Jason Price, calls the new GPS units an investment to optimise each player’s training. “We’re trying to be a lot more

specific with training, with a lot of individualised stuff and we’ve invested in some technology so that we can do that, he explains. “We wanted to train as the

the players. “We’re looking at our high speed intensity so that’s metres over 15 km/h, Price said. “Having the live GPS it lets us know

game demands and a big part of that is our GPS numbers. The team wear the GPS units to each day’s training, providing the coaches with crucial information when it comes to the game plan. The gadgets connect to a satellite and measure distance and speed for each of

exactly where they’re at. And if they’re allowed to do 4km then once they hit 4km they can just move to the side.â€? Each player can then access their personal stats on the shared information platform used by the Blues to monitor his personal progress.

PATRICK TUIPULOTU LOCK | 1.98M | 120KG | 22YR Patrick Tuipulotu had one of the nation’s biggest career break throughs last year. The 22-yearold made his start for the Blues and the All Blacks in the same year – the first was his aim, the second came as a total surprise. Since his debut for both teams, Patty has become internationally recognised as a force out on the paddock. The lock is 1.98m tall and a wall of muscle, so we’re looking forward to this warrior making even more of an impact for the Blues this season. Patty answers our questions in this week’s Q&A. Tell us something not many people know about you I was born in Christchurch and moved to Auckland so our family could look after my grandparents. Which means I could have been playing for the Crusaders. What has been your career highlight to date? Getting selected for the All Blacks. I’d been going to the AB training camps and we had just played the Hurricanes (Blues won, 37-24). JK told me that I’d been selected when I came off the field. I couldn’t sleep that night and went to camp the next day. I started against England during the second test in Dunedin. What’s your earliest rugby memory? My first Super Rugby game when I was 11. It was the Blues v Hurricanes at Eden Park and I was cheering for the Hurricanes!

Who’s your biggest role model and why? Kevvie is the ultimate rugby role model there is. He’s great with the community and nice off the field but when he crosses the line, he’s a completely different person. He’s like an animal. Describe yourself in 3 words Quiet, hairy, gentle. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? Our old house in Ponsonby on Tawariki Street. That’s where my grandparents first stayed when they came from Samoa and most of my family has been through there. Do you have any match day superstitions? No, but I’ve got to have the right meal before the game: Mashed potatoes, poached eggs, chicken and spaghetti.
