A MESSAGE FROM
OUR SPONSORS Over the past few years, Investec Super Rugby has firmly established itself as the club rugby tournament on the international calendar. Investec’s sound partnership with New Zealand Rugby, along with the professionalism of the players and members, has proved a good match for the ambitions of the Investec brand. We look forward to working with Investec Super Rugby for a further five years. Our continued involvement coincides with the expansion of the competition to 18 teams. This includes the newly formed Sunwolves and Jaguares from Japan and Argentina respectively. This will undoubtedly build on the significant
interest in the stellar performances of these clubs’ national teams at the recent Rugby World Cup. Their participation will further enhance the competition’s international credentials, provide future stars of the game and deliver new audiences for Super Rugby. We wish those on and off the field all the best for the games ahead. JANET LARSEN Head of Marketing Investec South Africa

THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PARTNER OF
SEASON AHEAD HEAD COACH TANA UMAGA SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON THE PRESEASON AND WHAT HE’S LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING FROM THE TEAM IN 2016. What did the team learn from preseason? The 2016 preseason games played a really important part in our build up for tonight’s game, especially for younger players. When we played the Rebels, even though they fielded an under-strength team, there were a lot of players with Super Rugby experience out there in the starting team. The younger players got a hard game and a taste for what’s coming up. As the preseason games went on, that intensity definitely built up against the Hurricanes and the Chiefs, and we’re expecting a tough match against the Highlanders tonight. Because of this experience, I feel that we can trust that our structures have been tested, our players have gone through months of strength and conditioning training, and they’ve really bonded well together as a team unit. What was your ratio between rugby and S&C training during the build-up? There’s been a lot of running and a lot of time in the gym, which has to be the case to build a well-conditioned team, and at this level you have to have the fitness. But we really made sure to get the balance right – at the end of the day, we’re here to play rugby. We incorporated a lot of rugby technical and tactical elements in our preseason. I wanted our team to grow a strong understanding of structures and the game we want to play. That’s been the focus and I really think we’ve made good headway in achieving that goal. What are you expecting from the season? For me, coming from ITM Cup, Super Rugby will be a lift in intensity, accountability and expectation. My expectation of us is usually higher than expectations from the outside, which always keeps me level and negates a lot of the pressure that come from other people. I want to be the best I can be, that’s my whole motivation. I also want to get as far as I can with the group that we have and help the players grow and achieve their goals. I’ve been looking forward to tonight’s game for a long time. Preseason is great, but you don’t know where everyone is at – teams keep things up their sleeve and everybody knows that to win a long tournament like Super Rugby, it’s not how you start, but how you finish. We’re coming off under-performance, so our region is expecting something from us straight away, and to continue it until the end of the competition. We want to answer that with strength and maintain it throughout the season, but we need a starting point. So this first game against the Highlanders will give us a real indication of how preseason has gone for us. And who better to test yourself against than the defending champions?
PROFILE:
AL ROGERS Like many Welshmen relishing the glory days of the 70’s, Alistair Rogers was born into a rugby-mad family. The former flanker was born in Port Talbot, Wales and spent most of his youth in Aberavon playing for the local rugby club. He earned his stripes with Neath Rugby Club, ironically known as the Welsh All Blacks, but nothing could surpass the original All Blacks’ reputation in the Rogers household. “My dad always said, if you want to play rugby go to New Zealand,” said Alistair. “He loved the All Blacks because they were the best at what they did.” Alistair adopted these same values for his own career – hard work, good strategy and excellence – and in 1998 followed his father’s advice to Wellington, New Zealand. “I knew within a couple of days of being in New Zealand that it would be my home for the rest of my life,” he said. It was here
6 BLUES VS HIGHLANDERS / 12 JUNE 2015
that Alistair met his future wife, Katie, and played for Wellington’s Western Suburbs. The initial introduction to NZ was short-lived and Alistair returned to Wales after his contract finished to play for Ebbw Vale and London Welsh, interspersed with a coaching season for Ballina, Ireland. By 2006, Alistair and Katie were back in New Zealand and soon Alistair was getting back into the rugby world. “My ultimate goal was to go back into coaching and I thought the video analysis path would be a good way to increase my knowledge and understanding of the game,” he said. He had all the credentials needed for a smooth transition from working in IT for The Department of Internal Affairs to a video analysis role at Wellington Rugby. That transitioned into a role with the Hurricanes and before long Alistair was on standby for the All Blacks during the 2007 RWC.
“That’s probably where the learning started. I’m a studious person, so I had books and books,” he said. “Through my All Blacks role I was able work with people who looked at the game in a completely different way.” By 2011, Alistair was fulltime with the All Blacks, as their performance analyst. After the 2011 World Cup, Alistair became assistant defence coach for the Hurricanes in 2014 and took up a spot coaching role with the Honda team in Japan, as well as continuing as performance analyst for the All Blacks. Now the focus is solely on the Blues. “Because of our history, because of the types of players at our disposal, the opportunity to build on this legacy is extremely exciting,” he said. “The first priority for me is to get to know the players and let them get to know me. I don’t confess to know everything, but if I don’t know it, I’ll study it or we’ll work it out together.”

OFA TU’UNGAFASI PROP | 1.95M | 120KG | 23YR |
QA
Blues prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi has been in the team since 2013, developing his trade quietly and studiously. In 2015, he started every game during the season, bar one due to concussion, and was selected for the All Blacks training squad prior to the 2015 Samoa test. Formerly known as the Predator with long, snaking dreads, Ofa is now 5 pounds lighter and ready to get stuck into the 2016 season. What players do you look up to? I’m a big fan of All Black lock Brad Thorn, I like the physicalty that he brings to the game – I always write THORN on my wrist-straps during a game as a reminder to play like he did. I also look to Jerome Kaino for how to play defence and Charlie Faumuina for attack.
What’s your game day tradition? I like to sleep alone in the spare room the night before to get a good sleep before the game. Then in the morning, I like to hang around the house and spend time with my girls. What’s your earliest rugby memory? I started playing rugby when I was 14, for Patumahoe Rugby Football Club Under 19s. I was tall and was playing with my two older brothers in the same team. Tell us something most people don’t know about you I come from a family of 12 kids, 10 boys and two girls, and I sit in the middle. It’s huge, but I like it. When my parents were back in Tonga,
they were both in the army and when they got married one had to resign. Dad was the only one working to support a wife and 12 kids, so it was quite tough. Now it’s a lot easier, because everyone lends a hand when things come up and most of my older brothers have moved out of home. What are your 2016 season goals? I like to keep it simple and focus on consistent performance and playing well. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? It’s probably my home out in Mangere with my wife and kids. Then, when I’m not at home, it’s probably our new headquarters at Alexandra Park – everything is so nice. Do you have any match day superstitions? I definitely need a good sleep. If I wake up in the morning and haven’t had a good sleep then I think about it a lot. I also really like to have a good meal on time, around four hours before a game. Who on the team will always make you laugh and how is he funny? I think Scott’s pretty funny, he’s a bit of a goofball.

OUR NEW GYM
There’s plenty to love about our new Blues High Performance facility next to Alexandra Park, but there’s something a little special about the purpose-built gym. It’s a 530 square metre area, big enough to house the entire squad at the same time. It also gives the Strength & Conditioning and Medical teams space to conduct rehab programs without sending the players offsite. There’s eight lifting stations with a full complement of equipment, a five-metre chin up ring, space for a 10
metre speed test and five reformers to assist with rehab and prehab. The equipment is also on point, with an array of dumbells, benches, kettlebells, and medicine balls to keep the players strong. Plus, the commercial gym equipment, like leg presses, can be used for rehab. Players and Blues staff alike have also made the most of treadmills, watt bikes, rowers and a seated grinder. It’s all geared to keep the team close and strong, in between their on-field rugby training.
Blues team dietitian Dave Shaw has been working with Massey University student dietitian Rachel Blair to develop the most nutritious recipes for our players. Here are two of their best breakfast ideas for hungry athletes.
BIRCHER MUESLI WITH NATURAL YOGHURT AND FRESH BERRIES
BAKED/PAN FRIED SALMON WITH SCRAMBLED EGGS + CHIVES AND CIABATTA
Like all good Bircher muesli recipes, this is best prepared the night before to help the oats soak up the good flavour.
This fish is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, plus it’s a delicious way to start the day.
• 100g oats • 2 Tbsp chia seeds (black or white) • 350ml milk • 1 Tbsp maple syrup • A dash of vanilla extract • Natural yoghurt • Fresh berries • Sliced almonds Place oats and chia seeds in a jar. Pour over the milk, add the maple syrup and vanilla extract. Mix well, cover, and leave to soak overnight. In the morning, layer the oats with natural yoghurt, fresh berries and sliced almonds.
• 100-120g raw salmon • 3 eggs • Low fat milk • Fresh chives • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 slices of ciabatta with margarine Make sure no bones are left in the salmon. Add 1 tsp of olive oil to a pan, heat pan and add salmon when hot. Make sure you cook the salmon until it is only slightly raw in the centre then remove from the heat. Whisk eggs with a dash of low fat milk and salt and pepper. Place 1 tsp of olive oil in a pan and heat until hot. Add egg mixture and toss untill cooked. Lightly toast 2 pieces of ciabatta and spread margarine, place eggs and salmon on top and enjoy.

THE NAKED MC’S From this game forward, you’ll be seeing a whole lot more of David Fane and Shimpal Lelisi who are set to be sideline announcers at our home games this season. They’ll be bringing plenty of not-so-subtle mockery to our beloved game. We thought you’d like to get to know a little more about these two members of bro’Town, Sione’s Wedding and Naked Samoans fame, so we sent through a list of questions and laughed our way through the answers. Here’s some for your appreciation.
So, how did the infamous duo meet? DF: Shim and I met at the formation of the Pacific Theatre Company, he was the guy who got the girls. I was the guy who the girls really wanted to meet, but were too shy to ask in case I rejected them. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. And where did the name Naked Samoans come from? SL: I was in a movie called “Topless Women Talk about their Lives” so the boys played around with it and came up with the title of our first play – “Naked Samoans Talk about their Knives.” People just started calling us the Naked Samoans after that. DF: And from there we just stayed naked. Who do you reckon is funnier of the two of you? SL: Dave, he’s why the Nakeds have a mantra for when things go wrong: “What would Dave do?” It’s since become a hashtag #WWDD DF: Shim is funny in the way where if you locked your keys in your car and needed a coat hanger to break in, he would go get a sledgehammer. I’m more high-brow having performed for Prince Charles, I know what it means to be classy!
How long have you been Blues hard? DF: I’ll be honest, I was ‘canes hard. Then one day, as I prayed, the Lord said to me “Oi Dick, you were born in Bluesland, support them or a plague of rugby boots will hit your mouth.” At that moment, in 2016, I came back to the Blues, Hard! SL: I’ve been backing the Blues since Day One. What’s your favourite Blues memory? SL: Of course the years we won the titles, but really there’s too many good memories – it’s why I’m still a Blues fan! DF: When underdog Blues beat Crusaders down in Christchurch, and the TAB gave the Blues stink odds. It wasn’t stink for me! Blues bet made me a hundredaire. And why were you keen to MC the Blues’ games? DF: We are all behind the Blues, doing our bit. The players do their bit, coaches do their bit, and the fans do their bit. It’s an all-in season for the Blues this year; we just want to do our bit. We love you Blues!
