A MESSAGE FROM
OUR SPONSORS Over the past few years, Investec Super Rugby has firmly established itself as the club rugby tournament on the international calendar. Investec’s sound partnership with New Zealand Rugby, along with the professionalism of the players and members, has proved a good match for the ambitions of the Investec brand. We look forward to working with Investec Super Rugby for a further five years. Our continued involvement coincides with the expansion of the competition to 18 teams. This includes the newly formed Sunwolves and Jaguares from Japan and Argentina respectively. This will undoubtedly build on the significant
interest in the stellar performances of these clubs’ national teams at the recent Rugby World Cup. Their participation will further enhance the competition’s international credentials, provide future stars of the game and deliver new audiences for Super Rugby. We wish those on and off the field all the best for the games ahead. JANET LARSEN Head of Marketing Investec South Africa

THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PARTNER OF
SKYCITY CHEERLEADERS RETURN TO THE PARK Tonight we’re celebrating the 20-year history of SKYCITY Auckland and all the good work they do within the community. To help mark the occasion, for the first time in five years, we’re welcoming the SKYCITY cheerleaders back to Eden Park to cheer on the Blues. Since its formation in the late 80s by entertainer Lynette Perry, the team has been performing at Auckland Rugby and then Blues games around the country. It’s since expanded to include the SKYCITY Breakers, SKYCITY Mystics and Warriors teams. Nikky Anderson was a dancer almost from the beginning, joining at the age of 17 in 1993 and, aside from a two-year international stint, staying with the team until 2002. She remembers the team pulling off exciting stunts, like abseiling in to the grounds and riding on the back of Harleys. Nikky took over choreographing the team in 2003 and says there have been significant changes over its history. The team was initially named after their radio sponsor 91FM, followed by Say Cheese before SKYCITY took over. “We started out dancing in a little G-string leotard with little frills and humungous pom-poms.
“Then when SKYCITY came on board and Alison Brooke (nee Imm) was choreographer, the focus shifted off the beautiful girls and started recognising them as athletes,” she said. Now, in 2016, the squad is made up of 16 female dancers, each of whom were selected during an audition process at the beginning of the year. Team choreographer Kayla Paige said the team has some of the best dancers in Auckland and around New Zealand. The team trains at a dance studio in Epsom, meeting every week for anything from 2 to 6 hours. It’s the only year-round commercial dance job in the country, making a position in the squad highly sought after. “More than 50 dancers were at this year’s auditions and only 16 girls made the squad,” said Kayla. “Whoever brings their best game on the day gets into the team.” There is also an all male SKYCITY dance team made up of 8 to 10 dancers. These boys are made up of some of the best dancers in the country coming from crews like The
Palace, Identity Dance Crew and Faculty. This squad of boys will also be joining the girls for this Friday night’s half time performance. Eden Park pundits can expect to see a “very high energy and exciting” performance from the cheer team on Friday night and will mark the first time the boys and girls are dancing together at Eden Park.
Friday night’s SKYCITY Cheer Team is: Lucy Peters, Jane Strickland, Katie Swift, Megan Gibson, Danielle Timbers, Phoebe Rose, Brooke Cope, Kirsten Ocampo, Vikki Wiltshire, Steph Vos, Andrew Cesan, Cam Smith, Oscar Wilson, Nick Hidalgo, Leighton Rangi, William Howling, Todd Williamson, Jackson Tuaere, Gabe Sutton, Connor Muller.

PROFILE:
MALE SA’U Male Sa’u has played out the typical professional rugby narrative in reverse. He left New Zealand early to pursue rugby in Japan, before returning to his roots with Super Rugby. The Otara-boy developed his craft at Tangaroa College, a school “in the backstreets of South Auckland.” They weren’t known as a rugby powerhouse, more recognised for volleyball and touch football. But with some guidance from Auckland stalwart and coach Waisake Sotatu, Male and his teammates finished 4th in the prestigious Auckland 1A competiton. Male played centre and on the wing, earning spots in the New Zealand Under-19 and Under-20 teams and spending a few years in the Auckland Rugby Academy after high school. It wasn’t long before his talent was recognised by Japanese club Yamaha Jubilo and he was offered a contract. The 19-year-old and his then partner, now wife, Jazmynn took up the adventure and travelled across
the world to begin a nine-year immersion into Japanese life. It was here that the couple’s two daughters, Amiya and Ayyah, were born. It’s also where Male developed his love for cooking and food. His favourite meals to cook became, ironically, the Italian favourite fresh pasta and pizza. But Male also became accustomed to the Japanese delicacy Natto. The soy-bean mixture is packed full of protein and is typically eaten with soy sauce on rice. It just takes a little getting used to – Male described it as “like beans that smell off and rotten.” By living and playing in Japan for more than three years, Male was eligible to play for the national team at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Which means he helped write the Cinderella story of the competition: when the Brave Blossoms beat the Springboks in pool play. “A few weeks out from that game, we didn’t really believe we could do anything at the World Cup because South Africa was in our
pool,” Sa’u recalled. “Eddie Jones saw the opportunity and kept drilling in to us that we could be the best Japanese team ever.” Those words must have stuck, because the team pulled off the biggest upset at the tournament, beating the South Africans 34-32. “It was unreal, Japanese media was blowing up back home, the boys couldn’t sleep,” he said. “It was probably one of the best experiences of my rugby career.” After the World Cup, Male and his family decided to return home and begin a life in New Zealand. “Growing up as a South Auckland kid, I always wanted to play for the Blues and the All Blacks or Manu Samoa. It’s about performing in front of my family and friends and helping the young kids here in Auckland achieve their goals,” he said. “I can’t make the All Blacks, so the goal is really just to come back and help the team develop into a champion team.”

MATT McGAHAN
UTILITY BACK

QA
Blues first five Matt McGahan initially followed his father’s footsteps down the league path, playing for the Melbourne Storm’s Under-20 team. Then, in 2014, he decided to return to rugby with North Harbour and then the Blues. Let’s get to know a little more about our newest first five.
What players do you look up to? I look up to my dad (former Kiwis captain Hugh McGahan). Not only because he’s my father, but also because he’s an experienced professional sportsman. He’s able to provide good insight, which I didn’t always appreciate when I was younger, but now it means a lot. What’s your game day tradition? I like to relax and chill-out. I also like to go out for breakfast that morning to a café down the road from where I’m staying. What’s your earliest rugby memory? When I was 12, I competed in an age and weight restricted competition called Roller Mills 2005. It was the first time I played rugby union. I’d played league up until that point, but all my friends were playing rugby union so I wanted to play with them. Tell us something most people don’t know about you The place I want to go the most, the one that’s on my bucket list,
is Appleton Estate in Jamaica, the rum factory. I looked it up online and saw that it was in Jamaica, so I thought that’d be somewhere a bit different. What are your 2016 season goals? It’s to prepare as best I can and give myself the best possible opportunity to perform every week. I also need to gain some weight, I’m a little light. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? Probably up at my parent’s place at Orewa Beach. It’s not far from Auckland, but it’s a lot slower. Do you have any match day superstitions? It’s really just to stay as relaxed as possible and not get bothered by anything. If things pop up, I don’t let them bother me. I don’t really like superstitions for that reason; I don’t want to be bothered if something goes wrong. Who on the team will always make you laugh and how is he funny? Oh, Rene Ranger for sure. He’s himself all the time and doesn’t care about how people perceive him. He’s just Rene.

STEVEN LUATUA RECORDS
50 CAPS Round 2 marked an historic occasion for loose forward Steven Luatua. Last Friday night, when facing the Crusaders down in Christchurch, the 24-year-old recorded his 50th cap for the team and became the 30th player in the history of the Blues to do so. The feat is impressive and reflects the tireless work-ethic and maturity of this young player, known on the team as Dolph. We talked to his fellow Blues leaders to find out what the team thinks of his 50-cap career. Blues captain Jerome Kaino handed Steven the honour of leading the team on to the field to mark the occasion. “Obviously, as a player, he’s got a lot of x-factor. He has the skill set to play lock and six, which indicates a huge amount of talent.”
“As a person, he’s quite easy-going and mature for his age. Even when he was 20 and came in to the Blues in 2012, he was really mature. It’s shown in the way he holds himself around the team. He’s punctual and does the right things off the field, he also commands a starting position.” “It was an easy selection for us to bring him in to the leadership group.” “On a personal level, I’m really close with him. We like clowning around and he likes to play practical jokes on me. I’d say we’ve built a pretty good friendship over the years.” Fellow Blues leader James Parsons agrees with Jerome’s assessment of Dolph. “On the field, he’s cool, calm and collected. He never gets flustered by the moment and he’s clear on
1 0 BLUES VS HURRICANES | 11 MARCH 2016
his role. Off the field, I’d say he’s a well balanced young man. He’s very professional, but at the same time he’s willing to have a good time with the lads. He’s an all-round humble, good bloke. Luatua entered the Super Rugby Championship as a replacement mid-season in a 25-3 win over the Lions in Auckland in May 2012. He impressed sufficiently to get his first start the following week in a big loss to the Crusaders, but he would play three more games as a starter that season. Luatua started 13 times in the 2013 season that included two tries and his first start at No 8 in the narrow loss to the Bulls at Eden Park. He played in all 16 games in the 2014 season with a solitary try and managed 12 games last year until his season-ending shoulder injury against the Bulls in the 23-15 win at Eden Park. The MAGs Old Boy enjoyed two IRB junior world championship titles with the NZ U20 team in 2010 and 2011. Two years later, the same year as his Super Rugby debut, he was selected for the All Blacks where he played 14 times over the next two years.

A 20 YEAR JOURNEY:
BLUES & HURRICANES Go to a Blues v Hurricanes match and you can expect to be entertained. The two teams have earned the reputation for hard-hitting and thrilling rugby, beginning with the first Super game ever in 1996. Let’s take a look at some top highlights from the past 20 years of competition.
March 1, 1996: The inaugural Super Rugby season, then called Super 12, was kicked-off by the Blues and Hurricanes in Palmerston North. The Blues team was stacked with All Blacks and they certainly made an impact at the FMG Stadium. Players like Andrew Blowers, Eroni Clarke, Ofise Tonu’u,
Carlos Spencer and Craig Dowd were try scorers and, interestingly, Zinzan Brooke kicked the only conversion. The Blues won 28-36. February 22, 2002: They say it takes a team to score a try, but there’s something pretty special about a player who can walk off the field at full-time after scoring four
tries. In front of a crowd of 31,000 at Wellington’s cake tin, the Blues’ wunderkind wing Doug Howlett achieved the feat. His four tries added to the 7-60 Blues romping. May 16, 2008: On a Friday night at Eden Park, in front of 37,352 fans, the Blues were able to steal a 19-17 win from the visiting Hurricanes. It was the last round of the season
and marked the end of a four-year Blues victory drought. The game was tight, only one try from Anthony Boric and two from the Hurricanes’ Hosea Gear to keep the crowd on edge. It was the excellent kicking from first five Nick Evans (1 conversion, 4 penalty goals) that helped the Blues edge ahead at full time.

Today, we’re going back to the home-style meals with Blues team dietitian Dave Shaw and student dietitian Rachel Blair. They’ve got two great dinner options that’ll go down a treat post-game.
MUM’S HOMEMADE FISH PIE This one’s a perfect option after footy training, packed full of protein, carbs and delicious veges. • 100g butter • 3 Tbsp flour • 1 cup milk • ½ cup cream • 50g butter melted • ½ cup chopped parsley • 1 med onion chopped • 1 can or 450g smoked fish fillets + juice • Flaked surimi • 1 ½ cups corn • 1 leek finely chopped • 2 hard boiled eggs chopped • 2 slices toasted bread • Salt and pepper
Heat butter in a large sauce pan. Add sliced leek and onion then stirfry for 3-4 minutes, then add flour and stir well. Pour in the juice from the can of smoked fish and the milk, then add the corn, smoked fish and surimi. Gently simmer mixture for 10 mins until smooth and thick. Add cream, hard boiled eggs and parsley, plus salt and pepper to taste. In a food processor, process the bread and butter until they form coarse breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the mixture. Bake at 180 degrees for 15-20 mins until breadcrumbs are crisp and golden on top. Serve up hot.
STEAK WITH BALSAMIC ROASTED VEGE SALAD AND FRESH GREEN BEANS With its ample supply of iron and B12, red meat is one of the most important ingredients in any athlete’s diet. • 250gm sirloin steak • Salt and pepper • 2 new potatoes • 1 kumara • ¼ pumpkin • 1 carrot • 1 capsicum • 1 red onion • 2 cloves of garlic
Cut up new potatoes (skin on), kumara, pumpkin, carrots, capsicum, onion and garlic. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar over vegetables and bake at 180 to 200 degrees celsius for 40 minutes. Brush steak with olive oil and sprinkle salt and pepper over. Cook the steak in a hot pan for around 2mins 30 each side. Steam fresh beans until bright green in colour, then serve with roast vegetables and steak. Enjoy!
