A MESSAGE FROM
OUR SPONSORS Over the past few years, Investec Super Rugby has firmly established itself as the club rugby tournament on the international calendar. Investec’s sound partnership with New Zealand Rugby, along with the professionalism of the players and members, has proved a good match for the ambitions of the Investec brand. We look forward to working with Investec Super Rugby for a further five years. Our continued involvement coincides with the expansion of the competition to 18 teams. This includes the newly formed Sunwolves and Jaguares from Japan and Argentina respectively. This will undoubtedly build on the significant
interest in the stellar performances of these clubs’ national teams at the recent Rugby World Cup. Their participation will further enhance the competition’s international credentials, provide future stars of the game and deliver new audiences for Super Rugby. We wish those on and off the field all the best for the games ahead. JANET LARSEN Head of Marketing Investec South Africa

THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PARTNER OF
CELEBRATING A CENTURY Last Saturday night, when the team ran out to play the Reds at Suncorp Stadium, Josh Bekhuis was making history. The Blues lock earned his 100th Super Rugby cap, becoming just the 5th NZ Rugby player to earn 100 ITM Cup caps as well as the Super Rugby century. The team will be presenting Josh with his 100-game jersey on field after the Jaguares game. To join in the celebration, we thought we’d chat with some of our people who know him best: hooker James Parsons and Assistant Coach and former Highlanders Head Coach Glenn Moore. As one of our starting hookers, James has a strong relationship with Josh both on and off the field. He says Josh is one of the “unsung heroes of the group,” citing his integrity and hard work in the game.
“He’s relentless with his work ethic and he’s a top team man. Not only does he try to perfect his own game, he tries to perfect others as well. He’s been a key part of every success we’ve had as a forward pack,” said James. “And the best thing about him is he’s a top dude – he gets along with everyone. You don’t get to 100 Super Rugby caps if you’re not team focused.” “From a hooking point of view, a lineout caller and a hooker need a really good relationship. I’ve got so much trust in the guy, he brings a sense of calmness on the field and I know that I can rely on whatever he calls.” The emphasis on Josh’s trustworthiness and character extends up the team’s ranks to the coaching staff. Glenn Moore coached Josh for
three years while Head Coach for the Highlanders and he describes him as one of the most committed in the game. “He’s got a tremendous work ethic in terms of his own preparation and understanding the teams he’ll be playing against. He’s the ultimate team person and that’s something that hasn’t changed from the time he played for the Highlanders to now.” “He’s also extremely honest about his own performance and honest with others. I know he’s got strong family ethics as well – his family is very important to him,” said Glenn. “I’m sure they’d be very proud of his achievements.”

THE INSIDE RUNNING Ask Ihaia West what it’s like to room with halfback Bryn Hall and you’ll hear plenty of honesty about the Blues’ 9/10 relationship. “I have to baby him completely – he never takes his room key anywhere, he’s always borrowing stuff, he never takes his compression socks, he’ll forget what floor he’s on,” said West, ticking things off while Hall laughs by his side. Hall’s only response: “Somebody’s gotta take him out of his comfort zone.” But get the two on the field, and you’ll see a whole new side come out. West, cool and calm under pressure. Hall, clocking up miles on field to get the ball into the right hands. Both feeding off each other to communicate each play to the team. “I just know where Ihaia is going to be when I pass the ball, I know his voice and I know where he stands,” said Hall. “He usually stands a bit wider and flatter and
likes to take the ball to the line. I can trust where he’ll be.” This is a relationship that has been seven years in the making, even if they’ve only played in the Blues jersey for two years together. Bryn Hall played for rugby powerhouse St Peter’s College, graduating in 2010 and captaining the First XV that same year. Ihaia West comes from more provincial roots, playing for Napier Boys’ High School before leaving in 2009. Although they hail from different backgrounds, they’ve known each other since age-group representative days. They made the NZ Under-17s and Under-20s, both helping the NZ 20s finish runner-up at the 2012 Junior World Championships. They cite this representative experience as one of the key factors for their strong sense of accountability. “We’re really familiar with one another,” said Hall. “There are heaps of little things that I know
about Ihaia and he knows about me that mean we can keep each other accountable. That comes from years of experience playing together.” West could only agree, adding that the positional familiarity means less time looking for the player and more time looking at the space ahead. He also added that their history allows them to be particularly honest with one another. “We can be more demanding and have a go at each other, especially if there’s a weakness,” said West. Of course, a strong 9/10 relationship doesn’t always win games – it takes a whole team to do that – and these two know first-hand the heat that comes in Super Rugby competition. “It can be pretty tough sometimes when we’re under the pump,” said West. “But we both enjoy playing the role and the pressure just comes with the territory.”

He made his name in Sevens and earned his first start for the Blues two weeks ago – this 19-year-old speedster is turning heads around the world. Let’s take a look at what he gets up to on game day.
What players do you look up to? My favourite players would have to be Malakai Fekitoa and Israel Folau. Malakai is an explosive player, similar to Israel. They’ve both got lots of razzle and they’re just the best at what they do. In Sevens, I really look up to our team captain Tim Mikkelson, he leads from the front. What’s your game day tradition? I always play my computer games before we leave. League of Legends is my favourite, we always used to play it in Year 9 at Auckland Grammar and even in to the First XV. It’s got a bit of strategy, so it gets the mind going and it’s a bit of fun. What’s your earliest rugby memory? At our old family house in Mt Eden, there was this five-by-five patch of grass up by the mailbox. My brother, dad and I used to go up and practice our tackling – that’s probably my earliest memory. Tell us something most people don’t know about you I collect shoes – mostly Air Jordans and Yeezys. I’ve got over 40 pairs and started after watching these documentaries on YouTube about people who’d collect sneakers
– there’s some hard-out shoe collectors! What are your 2016 season goals? It was to get my first cap for the Blues, but now the focus is just to play the best rugby I can for the team and hopefully become part of the regular 23. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? Our old house in Mt Eden would still be my favourite place. I stayed there for 15 years, right after we returned from Japan until quite recently. I’m comfortable there and know the area really well. Do you have any match day superstitions? Nah, none. Aside from the computer games, but I wouldn’t really call that a superstition. Who on the team will always make you laugh and how is he funny? Probably Sam Nock. I’ve known him since he was at St Kents and I was at Grammar. He was really serious at high school and we weren’t that close, we’d just see each other a lot at competitions. Now that we’re on the same team, he’s always got a joke – which is new. They’re not too funny, but I always laugh. Probably more at him than the joke. BLUES VS JAGUARES | 02 APRIL 2016 9

CRISPY SALMON WITH KUMARA MASH & ROAST BEETROOT SALAD This option is high in heart healthy omega-3 fats. It can be tricky to find winter food recipes that are both nutritious and tasty. Blues team dietitian Dave Shaw and student dietitian Rachel Blair have a couple of options that should fit the bill.
400g Salmon steaks, skin on Olive oil 1-2 medium Kumara 1 Tbsp butter Milk Salt & Pepper 2 fresh beetroot 25g pine nuts 25g feta Serves 2 - 3
Peel and boil kumara until soft. Add butter, a dash of milk and salt and pepper to the kumara and mash until creamy with no lumps. To reduce saturated fat, use olive oil instead of butter. Slice raw beetroot into quarters and roast in the oven at 180°. Lightly toast some pine nuts in a saucepan at medium heat – make sure to watch closely as the pine nuts will burn easily. Chop or crumble feta over the beetroot and pinenuts. Fillet the salmon, leaving the skin on and making sure no bones are left. Add 1 tsp of olive oil to a pan and heat, adding the salmon when the pan is hot. Cook salmon until it’s slightly raw in centre.
HEARTY STEAK & CHICKPEA CASSEROLE AND TOASTED CIABATTA This protein rich casserole can be prepared in the morning and forgotten until dinner. Slow cooking casseroles bring out plenty of flavour and are stress free. 500g chuck steak 1 cup water 1 packet Onion Soup mix 1 Oxo cube Worcestershire Sauce ½ tsp Salt ½ tsp Baking soda 1 onion 10 button mushrooms 1 carrot ¼ pumpkin 1 potato 1 kumara 1 can of chickpeas ½ -1 loaf of Ciabatta Serves 2 -3
Dice the chuck steak and chop up each of the vegetables, before adding all ingredients to the crock-pot. Feel free to add any more vegetables that you so desire. Cook on low heat for the day. 30 minutes before dinner, place Ciabatta in the oven at 180°. Slice when hot and serve with casserole.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
JAGUARES The match at QBE Stadium might be the Jaguares’ first time playing on New Zealand soil, but our Blues are familiar with this Argentine team. It’s made up of a number of Pampas players, the nation’s A side that travelled to New Zealand last year to play Blues A in a friendly competition at Pakuranga Rugby Club. Let’s take a look at some of the faces that make up the Jaguares. AUGUSTIN CREEVY He might not have the youth of some of his Pampas teammates, but Creevy more than makes up for it with skill and dynamic play on the field. The one-time flanker transitioned to hooker after a shoulder injury while playing for French Top 14 side Biarritz. Argentina coach Santiago Phelan suggested Creevy should transition to hooker, so the young player returned home in 2007 to retrain his position. The idea worked. Creevy made his name as a dynamic and fast hooker, earning the nickname “Sonny Bill Creevy” after perfecting the art of the offload. He’s played for some big names (Clermont, Montpellier, Worcester Warriors), but has returned to Argentina to help his home side step up to Super Rugby.
JUAN MARTIN HERNANDEZ He’s known as “El Mago” – the magician. In 2006, media pundits (including the NZ Herald) were labelling Hernandez the best fullback in the world. And in 2007 he was one of five players nominated for IRB International Player of the Year. His boot is fearsome and he was cool-headed enough to score three drop-goals during a Rugby World Cup pool match in 2007. Needless to say, Hernandez is a force to be reckoned. But he’s also faced a number of injuries, the biggest being a back injury in 2010 that ruled him out of a Super Rugby season with the Sharks. He earned his stripes with Stade Francais from 2003 to 2009, where he played 123 games. He played for Racing Metro from 2010-2014 then on to Toulon before his home country called. Let’s see what a season of Super Rugby will bring out of this high-flier.
PABLO MATERA At 22, Matera is one of the younger squad members for the Blues v Jaguares match-up. The powerful flanker was brought up through the ranks of national representative teams – Under-19, Under-20 and Pampas XV – and was mentored by key coaches along the way, including Graham Henry. Matera made his senior debut for the Pumas in 2013, while still only 20, and consequently earned a spot in the national team for that year’s Rugby Championship. He caught the eye of Leicester Tigers selectors that same year, playing for the side from 2013-2015. Injury ruled him out of the Rugby Championship in 2014, but he fought back to the national side and is now featuring in the inaugural Jaguares side.
