A MESSAGE FROM
OUR SPONSORS Over the past few years, Investec Super Rugby has firmly established itself as the club rugby tournament on the international calendar. Investec’s sound partnership with New Zealand Rugby, along with the professionalism of the players and members, has proved a good match for the ambitions of the Investec brand. We look forward to working with Investec Super Rugby for a further five years. Our continued involvement coincides with the expansion of the competition to 18 teams. This includes the newly formed Sunwolves and Jaguares from Japan and Argentina respectively. This will undoubtedly build on the significant
interest in the stellar performances of these clubs’ national teams at the recent Rugby World Cup. Their participation will further enhance the competition’s international credentials, provide future stars of the game and deliver new audiences for Super Rugby. We wish those on and off the field all the best for the games ahead. JANET LARSEN Head of Marketing Investec South Africa

THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PARTNER OF
KIDS IN RUGBY:
WHAT TO KNOW We know that as a parent, it can be unsettling to send your little ones off in to the rugby world of tackling and hard-hits. That’s why we’ve picked the brains of our team physio, doctor and strength & conditioning coach for advice to prepare your kids for training. MARK PLUMMER – TEAM PHYSIO Enjoy the sport: The emphasis needs to be on enjoyment in the early years of rugby. Make sure the kids are learning the game, loving the game and having fun with mates. Focus on correct technique: Once they’re in the “tackling grades,” it’s important they’re taught the correct technique, with a focus on head and feet positioning. High school years will likely mean an increase in training, which may include weight training. The early stages could simply be body weight exercises, while the latter years of high school could introduce weights. Again, the focus should be on technique. Weights training programmes will come in time – don’t rush into them: Academy and club rugby will progress the weights training programmes under qualified staff,
so young players will often have access to better resources from this point on. Get a good prehab programme: It’s important to introduce specific prehabilitation programmes in high school, placing a big emphasis on movement patterns and range of movement. For instance, front rowers should focus on neck strengthening; lineout forwards should concentrate on jumping exercises. STEPHEN KARA – TEAM DOCTOR Don’t oversell headgear and mouthguards: Headgear prevents scalp and head lacerations. Mouthguards protect the teeth from trauma and are compulsory in rugby at amateur levels. Neither prevent concussion. Monitor concussions: Concussion management can be broken down to the 5 Rs: Recognise, Remove, Refer, Recover, Return. The community has a social responsibility to recognise concussion and act on it, not just team coaches, managers or healthcare professionals. If you suspect your child has
a concussion, then they must be removed from the field and not return to play that day. They also need to be referred to a medical professional for evaluation and diagnosis. JASON PRICE – STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH Encourage kids to have fun: It’s important that young rugby players get their fitness from rugby training and playing games with friends and teammates. This takes the pressure off, while also teaching good lifestyle habits. Use the schoolyard: During the school day, most children will get a good dose of exercise running around with mates and if they want to do any extra it should be simple exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, squads, lunges and alternative forms of running. Get fit with the kids: If sports gear is available around the house, you’ll find that kids will gravitate to it and exercise naturally. The best way to ensure safe practices is to jump in and exercise right along with them!

WHAT’S IN A POTATO? That’s what the farming family at Hira Bhana wanted to find out. Hira Bhana, based out in Pukekohe, spent the last year conducting consumer research to see what varieties are on offer. The results were startling. “There are too many differing varieties out there and it’s leading consumers to become confused,” said Vijay Bhana, nephew of the original Hira Bhana and potato advocate. “Usually people end up buying the wrong variety of potato for its end use.” To fix the situation and to prevent countless ruined dinners because of misused potatoes, the Bhana family decided to take matters in to their own hands. They’ve made it simple with two new bags – one bright yellow and the other green. The bright yellow bag contains the Agria variety, a yellow-fleshed potato that’s available year round. While the green offers the

“all-rounder” varieties, the potatoes that will grow throughout the year. After Blues v Rebels, Hira Bhana will be generously giving away 10 tonnes of these green bags to every family at the game. “The green bag will contain the Moonlight potato that’s versatile and tastes great, no matter what the season,” said Vijay Bhana. In a bid to prevent any future grocery store stress over potato varieties, the team at Hira Bhana have kindly broken down the varieties based on availability and popularity. Ilam Hardy Available Spring/Summer This is a floury, fluffy-textured potato. It’s great for chips, roasting, mashing, baking and wedges. They’re low in water content and high in starch. The potatoes have a dry and delicate texture, which means they break up easily when cooked and absorb a lot of liquid and flavour.
Sebago Available Summer/Autum The Sebago, much the same as the Ilam Hardy, is floury and fluffy textured – it’s great for chips, roasting, mashing, baking and wedges. You’re best bet is to buy them as the Ilam Hardy is going out of season. Agria Available year-round This variety is similar to the Ilam Hardy and the Sebago, the only difference being that it’s not seasonal specific; it also has a stronger natural flavour than other varieties. When the Ilam Hardy is out of stock and the Sebago aren’t on the shelves, you can easily cross over to the Agria. Moonlight & Rua Available Autumn / Winter. The Moonlight & Rua varieties are general purpose, so they can be used for most cooking methods. They have moderate starch content and are not too floury, nor too waxy. They sit between the waxy and smooth ends of the potato spectrum.

TANERAU LATIMER
FLANKER | 1.83M | 101KG | 29YR |
Loose forward and Super Rugby centurion Tanerua Latimer arrived at Blues HQ for the 2016 season after a stint in Japan and seven years with the Chiefs. There’s been plenty of discussion about what this natural leader will bring to the side, so today we’re taking a look at the man behind the jersey. What players do you look up to? She may not be a player, but one person who I’ve always looked up to is my mum, Mere. She’s spent the good part of 29 years bringing me up. I just admire her tenacity, raising three kids on her own and working three jobs at one time. Also my wife Alana, she lets me concentrate on my job while she looks after everything at home. What’s your game day tradition? I don’t have any traditions, I just like to get out, move and try not be still for too long. Whether it be mowing the lawns or taking the young fella to the park, I like to keep the mind active and try not to watch too much TV – It makes me feel slow and sluggish. Nothing too strenuous though. What’s your earliest rugby memory? Running around the icy fields of Te Puke with bare feet. I was 6 when I started playing junior rugby and remember the oranges at half-time and my Uncle who was a bit of a hardass. He was our coach and was real strict on us.
QA Tell us something most people don’t know about you I like my older music like Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. “Hotel California” is always a goody and Fleetwod Mac’s “The Seven Wonders.” Creedence Clearwater Revival is also pretty good. What are your 2016 season goals? It’d be to help the Blues strengthen their identity in this competition. Take leadership for example, I enjoy coming in each morning to do my rehab. If players see me doing the little things, then I hope it’ll have a positive effect on them. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? Onehunga because of its proximity to home. It’s got some great cafes and great parks for the young one, and it’s not too busy. Do you have any match day superstitions? Nah. Whatever goes, goes. You just have to adapt. Who on the team will always make you laugh and how is he funny? The obvious one would be Ranger, because he’s so out there. He’s just black and white, what you see is what you get. Also Tevita Li – he’s got a little girl laugh; it always makes me have a little giggle whenever I hear it.

APPLAUDING THE KIDS
Rippa Rugby through to Academy Rugby hold important keys to the development of young players – kids can learn interpersonal skills, how to work as a team and what it means to train hard off the field. It’s also an important opportunity for kids to learn sportsmanship and fair play. To develop this, NZ Rugby has worked with Small Blacks to introduce the APPLAUD initiative. It’s designed to provide young clubs and players with resources and charters to get kids playing fair. APPLAUD helps young players to: • Improve their skills
•A pplaud the performance of both teams and the referee • Give all players the opportunity to participate in the game • Praise efforts, not results • Create an enjoyable and safe environment • Encourage sporting behaviour • Play for enjoyment • Play hard but fair • Be committed to the team • Attend all practices and matches And the initiative isn’t just for the kids – it’s also designed for the parents and sideline supporters. In 2015, APPLAUD began handing out lollipops at games as
a way to promote the initiative and to quiet some of the more vocal supporters. APPLAUD encourages sports teams to designate areas where fans and supporters can rally together and cheer on the kids in action. It also serves to protect the coaches and umpires who are often on the receiving end of passionate supporters’ frustration. For more information on how to include the APPLAUD initiative in your child’s club or school team, head to http://www.smallblacks. com/applaud/
WE LOVE RUGBY: GROWING GREAT RUGBY PLAYERS Kids’ appetites can be insatiable, especially when they’re constantly kicking a ball around. To keep up with the energy demand, Blues team nutritionist Dave Shaw has a list of healthy and nutritious food to choose from. FISH: Fish is loaded with protein and healthy fats that support growing muscles and brains. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel provide an excellent source of omega-3 fats and can be enjoyed as part of homemade fish and chips. POTATOES & KUMARA: Potatoes and kumara are packed full of healthy carbohydrates that fuel high intensity exercise and a variety of essential vitamins, including vitamin C, that support general health. Have them your way – baked, boiled, roasted or make you own homemade chips! MILK: Milk is one of the best
sources of protein, so it’s ideal for recovery after training sessions. It’s also loaded with calcium – an essential mineral for growing bones. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Colourful vegetables provide a variety of vitamins and minerals that not only support general health, but also prevent us from picking up coughs and colds. For young players who are exposed to a variety of bugs each day, maintaining a strong immune system is crucial. Making sure you get your 5+ a day (3 veg and 2 fruit) will go a long way to keeping you in good health. NUTS: Nuts are nature’s superfood. Loaded with healthy fats, fibre and bit of protein, nuts should be a part of every athlete’s diet, for all age groups. They can be pricey, so keep an eye out for specials. You only need 1-2 handfuls
per day to get the benefits. LEAN MINCE: Mince is a great source of protein to help build muscle. It’s versatility sets it apart from other foods as you can make your own homemade meat patties, meat balls or mince sauce – a young crowd’s favourite! WATER: Sugary drinks like fizz, juice, sports drinks and coconut water should only be consumed in moderation. These provide a potent hit of sugar when many young individuals should be reducing how much they have. Water is your best source of hydration and sports drinks should only be used occasionally. WRAPS: Wraps are awesome! You can load a lot more meat and vegetables into a wrap than a sandwich and they’re perfect for the school lunch box or when out on the run. Plus, if you put them in the freezer they last for months.

WESTIE PIES GRAB-A-GAME Westie Pies is bringing a fantastic opportunity to local schools and all who attend Blues home games this season. With each game ticket bought, Blues supporters can use the code to put themselves in the draw to win one of eight $1,000 sports equipment prize packs for their primary or intermediate school. Each entry also goes in to the final Grand Prize draw of $15,000 of sports equipment for the school. Some of the squad have already visited one prize-winning school. Tirimoana School was announced as the first winner of the $1,000 sports gear prize at a special school assembly a few weeks ago. Blues players Michael Little, Tevita Li and Matt Vaega were on hand to congratulate the school

and hand over the prize as well as a special Blues Buddy shirt to prizewinner, Michael Kirkwood-Gemmell. Westie Pies owner Stefan Crooks said the competition was a way to get young people engaged with sport and to give back to their schools. “Our company’s core value is that we care and want our young people
to be engaged in healthy sporting environments as much as possible,” said Crooks. “This is a really good way to achieve that goal.” Other schools that have won the $1,000 sports prize pack are Northcote Intermediate and Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate. The next prize draw will take place after Blues v Rebels.
