A MESSAGE FROM

OUR SPONSORS Over the past few years, Investec Super Rugby has firmly established itself as the club rugby tournament on the international calendar. Investec’s sound partnership with New Zealand Rugby, along with the professionalism of the players and members, has proved a good match for the ambitions of the Investec brand. We look forward to working with Investec Super Rugby for a further five years. Our continued involvement coincides with the expansion of the competition to 18 teams. This includes the newly formed Sunwolves and Jaguares from Japan and Argentina respectively. This will undoubtedly build on the significant

interest in the stellar performances of these clubs’ national teams at the recent Rugby World Cup. Their participation will further enhance the competition’s international credentials, provide future stars of the game and deliver new audiences for Super Rugby. We wish those on and off the field all the best for the games ahead. JANET LARSEN Head of Marketing Investec South Africa

THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PARTNER OF

DIVERSITY AT THE PARK

While our differences are as obvious as each team’s colours, the Blues and Crusaders also know what unites us: our love of the game. That’s why we’ve decided to join NZ Rugby in a celebration of diversity in Round 14. The team at Barfoot & Thompson has put their hand up to help the Blues celebrate. While the Blues and Crusaders prepare to settle an age-old score out on the Park, punters will be able to experience performances from around the world. Dotted around the stadium at key entrances, there’ll be five different entertainers from the five nationalities represented in Super Rugby: Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Then at halftime, look overhead because giant coloured balls will be bouncing around the crowds to the beat of the music. Barfoot & Thompson has also invited international comedian Urzila Carlson to the game to help with the half-time entertainment.

South African born Urzila has come straight from three shows at the 2016 NZ International Comedy Festival, so will be ready to sling some humour in to the crowd. The Blues team, as a representation of the wider Auckland city, is a melting pot of nations. We have Samoan, American Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islanders, Maori, English, NZ European and Fijian, all pulling on the Blues jersey. Some of the players explained what their heritage means to them: Jack Ram was born in Australia and raised in Haateiho, Tonga. “What does my ethnicity mean to me? I’ll say it means a lot. When you get the chance to be part of an international sports tournament, you’re not only showing yourself to the world but also your heritage. Tanerau Latimer is from the Te Arawa/Nga Puhi Iwis “No matter where I go in the world or what I choose to do, I always look forward to coming home. The people around you are

who make home special.” Piers Francis was born and raised in Kent, England “My home country means a lot to me, of course. I was born in England, grew up there and my whole family still lives there. I moved away to pursue a dream and find myself living that dream here at the Blues, which is incredible. Long may that continue!” The players will each choose different coloured laces to wear out on the field during the game, with the multi-colours symbolising diversity in rugby. Everyone is welcome to join us as we celebrate what makes us unique and what unites us together.

MOALA EARNS

50

For centre George Moala, the exciting 18-34 victory over the Kings in Port Elizabeth was more than just a great away win for the team. It was the blockbusting centre’s 50th appearance for the Blues. 25-year-old Moala has earned the special honour before playing 50 games for his provincial side, Auckland. He was selected for Auckland in 2011 and made the Blues for the first time in 2012, coming off the back of representing Tonga at the 2010 IRB Under-20 World Cup in Argentina and strong performances for Tamaki College and Glen Innes. He was the standout player for the Blues in 2013, where he played on the left wing for most of the year, but it took until the 2015 season to establish himself in the midfield. During an eye-catching

year, Moala chalked up 60 tackle busts and over 900 run metres. The 104kg and 1.88m powerhouse made his All Blacks debut in 2015 against Samoa, starting on the right wing. He was impressive in his first outing in the black jersey, securing a try in the 25-16 win and is likely to have the selectors looking at him again in 2016. During the ITM Cup, Moala was in great form and topped the individual tryscorers’ ledger with his 10 during the season as Auckland made the Final. In the absence of an injured Rene Ranger, out for the rest of the season, Moala is the most capped back in the Blues and takes up a senior role in the youthful side. Team captain James Parsons said that Moala was one of the most

loyal members of the Blues side, citing his commitment to the team and responsiveness in training. “George is quiet, but he’s definitely an actions man,” said Parsons. “He does a lot of talking through his performances and is a good friend and teammate.” “He buys in to the team, he’s a good soldier and he’s really passionate about the Blues jersey. George buys in to the Blues legacy and is invested in the future of the team.” Moala will be taking to the field on Saturday for his 52nd cap and will be honoured after the game by his teammates and coach, so make sure you stick around to pass on your congratulations.

GET YOUR 2016 JERSEY AND STAND WITH THE BLUES

QA Timaru born and Waimate raised Billy Guyton has been working his way north with rugby, starting with North Otago in the provincial tournament before earning a spot with the Hurricanes in 2013. This was followed by a stint with the Crusaders in 2015 and then the Blues call this year. Billy has been moving from strength to strength as halfback, so we had a chat to find out more about the man behind the jersey (and the beard). What players do you look up to? I look up to Jimmy Cowan a lot. He’s also from Tasman and he taught me so much about the game. It still helps me today. What’s your game day tradition? I like to have chicken with poached eggs for lunch before the game and then just stay relaxed during the day. What’s your earliest rugby memory? I remember playing my first game of tackle rugby when I was 10 for my home-town of Waimate. I can’t remember if I scored a try or not, but it’s definitely my first memory. Tell us something most people don’t know about you My real first name is Billy-John.

HALFBACK | 1.86M | 90KG | 26YR |

What are your 2016 season goals? My goals are to grow my game even further and become the starting halfback. What’s your favourite place in Auckland? Cornwallis Regional Park out west is probably my favourite place. It’s really peaceful and a nice place to go relax. Do you have any match day superstitions? When I head in to the changing sheds to get everything ready for the game, I like to place everything down a certain way: left, right, left, right. It didn’t come from anything, just a routine that I started and have stuck with. Who on the team will always make you laugh and how is he funny? Doc (Stephen Kara) is a funny man and his humour is a bit off the wall, like mine, so we get along well.

Brendon O’Connor’s Super Rugby story may have started down south, but it certainly made the biggest splash up north. He was born in Gisborne and attended Gisborne Boys’ High School, moving down to Canterbury post school to pursue his rugby career. Prior to earning a berth with the Crusaders, O’Connor helped New Zealand win the 2009 Junior World Championship title in Japan. The flanker was initially drafted in to the Crusaders’ Wider Training

Group in 2010 at the age of 20, earning his first two caps during the 2012 season. O’Connor was lured north in 2013 and earned 43 Blues caps from 2013 to 2015. He scored one try for the team and started every game during the 2015 season. In his final season, O’Connor’s consistency and outstanding performances week in week out earned him the 2015 Blues Player of the Year award and the respect of his teammates, coaches and

the interest from international clubs. During that time, O’Connor captained the Hawkes Bay Magpies to a Ranfurly Shield victory. Not bad for a player who had only just turned 25. Using his seasons with the Blues as a springboard, O’Connor took up an offer with the Leicester Tigers at the end of 2015, proving that his consistency was not limited to the Super Rugby competition.

KAI TIME LAMB STEAK WITH ISRAELI COUS COUS SALAD Lean lamb steak can be one of the tastiest sources of protein. Coupled with the semolina-based couscous and the apricot flavour, this makes a great winter meal for two. 250g lamb steak Olive oil 100g couscous Basil pesto 1 can of apricots 1 red onion 50g feta 2 cups spinach 50g pumpkin seeds and cashew nuts

Cook lamb steak in hot pan using 1 tsp olive oil until medium rare. Cook couscous as per instructions on packet. Add finely chopped apricots, red onion, feta, spinach, pumpkin seeds and cashews to the couscous, then add the juice from the can of apricots. Another option is to steam some broccoli as a side dish. Serve with 1 tsp of basil pesto.

MORROCAN CHICKEN WITH BROWN RICE AND STEAMED BROCOLLI SALAD This healthy and filling meal for one is perfect for rugby players post training. If it’s been a tough session, having a slightly larger portion of chicken and rice will help provide additional protein and carbohydrate for recovery. 150g chicken breast Morrocan seasoning Olive oil 1 cup of brown rice 5-6 florrets of broccolli Chilli flakes 1 Lemon 50g of sliced almonds

Place one cup of brown rice plus one and a half cups of water in a rice cooker then leave to steam. This will double in amount once cooked. Brown rices takes longer than white rice to cook, so make sure you leave 30-40 minutes. Slice chicken into coin size chunks then dust with morrocan seasoning until lightly covered. Bake in oven at 180°C untill the chicken is cooked through – about 15-20 minutes. Steam the broccoli until bright green. Don’t overdo, it should only take 5 minutes to cook. Squeeze lemon over the broccoli and add a sprinkle of chilli flakes and sliced almonds to season. Serve and enjoy!

BLUES v CRUSADERS:

RIVALRY Since 1996, the Blues and Crusaders have enjoyed one of the longest running rivalries in NZ sport. The tensions and hype behind each derby have been heightened by a few key games. Let’s take a look at a few of them. 30 May, 1998. Eden Park. Super 12 final. For the first time in the competition, the Crusaders team was able to topple their northern counterparts. The game started slow, the board reading nil all until Andrew Mehrtens booted a penalty goal in the 30th minute. A brilliant dropkick from Adrian Cashmore in the 53rd minute, try-a-piece and penalty goals had the home side up 13-10. But the Crusaders weren’t ready to surrender. Andrew Mehrtens’ boot had the score tied 13-all heading in to the tense final minute. A chip and chase from 40 metres out had the Crusaders within try-scoring distance. Blues halfback Ofisa Tonu’u was on the receiving end, behind the try line, but struggled to get control and was quickly pulled to the ground by Crusaders wing James Kerr who took control of the ball and

2 0 BLUES VS CRUSADERS | 28 MAY 2016

touched it down. The Crusaders had defeated the mighty Auckland team, at Eden Park no less. 24 May, 2003. Eden Park. Super 12 final. It could have been easy for history to repeat at Eden Park. The Crusaders, once again returning to the fortress for a Super 12 final, were chomping at the bit to draw blue blood. And the opening half looked set to repeat history. The visitors capitalised on Blues errors, like Spencer dropping the ball within 10 metres of the Blues try line. The home side soon gave the fans something to cheer about when Doug Howlett dotted down early in the second half, followed up by a driving maul try landed by Daniel Braid. The Crusaders’ returning try wasn’t quite enough to close the gap, and the Blues won their third Super Rugby title, 21-17. 27 February, 2004. Lancaster Park. Super 12 Round 2. Carlos Spencer etched his name into rugby folklore when, after being fed the ball behind the Blues’ try line, who decided not to kick the ball but proceeded to pass it down the line to Joe Rokocoko.

The Fijian sprinter sped down the field, past Crusaders defenders, passed the ball on to Justin Collins, and then back to the perpetrator of it all, Carlos Spencer, who sauntered across the try line and dotted down in the corner. The number 10, knowing full well the difficulty of the conversion that lay ahead, slotted the ball between the posts and proceeded to flick the bird to the Crusaders loyal at Lancaster Park. The Blues went on to win 29-38 and the outraged Cantabrians never quite forgave the Aucklanders. 28 February, 2014. Eden Park. Super Rugby Round 3. While the Crusaders got the better of the Blues in the 2014 final standings, the Blues won a notable victory early in the season. It was the year of breakouts. Massey High School star Tevita Li earned his first Blues cap during the season and proved his worth by scoring a try in the 36th minute, fending off the likes of Richie McCaw in the process. Fellow rookie and future All Black Patrick Tuipulotu, who helped the Blues charge forward to a 35-24 victory, set up that try. It was the last time the Blues beat the Crusaders.
