BLUES VS CHIEFS A 20 YEAR RIVALRY
The Blues and Chiefs have enjoyed a long rivalry, encouraged by the close proximity of the Super Rugby clubs. Blues territory runs from Northland down to North Harbour and Auckland, while the Chiefs claim Counties Manukau and below. The Chiefs have had the upper hand over the Blues in the Super Rugby contest over the past four years. The last time the Blues won over the Chiefs in-season was on Saturday 15 May, 2010. The two teams met at Eden Park and featured the likes of Luke McAlister and Joe Rokocoko. The home team came away with a 30-20 win, but have describing the game as a been struggling to repeat the “great hitout.” success since. “I thought the set piece was Blues coach John Kirwan really good and we competed says that today is especially really well there,” he said. “But important for the team, not we also need to make sure we just because of the two teams’ nail our execution, individual history but also because of the skills and urgency around game’s placement in the season. the park.” “The first part of the season Tonight’s match will be an is going to be tough for us opportunity for the Blues to and we need to get on a bit face a long-time foe and set of a roll before we fly to Africa,” said Kirwan. “The “The local derbies are a notch local derbies are a notch above everything else so the above everything else so Chiefs game will be an exciting the Chiefs game will be an one for us.” JOHN KIRWAN exciting one for us.” And this game won’t be the first time the two sides a high standard have faced each other in 2015. going in to the The Blues hosted the Chiefs at South Africa Toll Stadium in Whangarei on tour. DAVID HILL NEW SKILLS COACH
Two months ago, Blues skills coach David Hill was on the practice field. Now he is leading those practices. David has made the quick transition from player for Toshiba Brave Lupus to coach after a persistent neck injury brought his playing career to a close in 2014. “I’d been away for eight to nine years and it became the right opportunity at the right time to come here,” he said. By stepping in to the coaching world at the Blues, David is marking the end of almost two decades of playing rugby.
He was a late bloomer in the rugby world, only moving to the sport in his final year at Marlborough Boys’ High School in 1996. “I didn’t really want to play,” said Hill. He was more interested in basketball, cricket, football and volleyball. It took some
convincing from the school’s first XV coach Kieran Keane, now head coach of the Tasman Makos. But once David stepped on to the field as fullback, he set in motion a varied and successful career. David would move to first five and begin playing for Southland, as well as spending his summers with Rugby Calvisano in Italy. By the close of 2001, he had been selected to play for the All Blacks and was representing the Chiefs in Super Rugby and Waikato at the provincial level. He was then off overseas, moving from Bristol, UK to Kurita and then Toshiba in Japan. “In the professional era, it’s inevitable that there’ll be some movement,” said David when explaining his rugby travels.
“The back decision-making and kicking was something I had to do all the time. So now I’m just sharing my knowledge and philosophy.” DAVID HILL
And when it comes to coaching, David said it was an “easy transition” into the role because it wasn’t long ago that he was on the opposite side of the coach/athlete relationship. “The back decision-making and kicking was something I had to do all the time,” said David. “So now I’m just sharing my knowledge and philosophy.” “I’m trying to focus on the individual and getting them to play and train better.”

BARFOOT & THOMPSON TRUE BLUE FROM THE START BY STEVE LANDELLS The Blues may have had their ups and down during their 19-year history but one element that has remained constant since the inaugural Super Rugby season is the loyal sponsorship and support given to the club by Barfoot & Thompson. The Auckland real estate giants came on board in 1996 as a foundation sponsor and have offered their unwavering support during the Blues’ history, which has included three Super Rugby triumphs but leaner times over the past decade. Barfoot & Thompson Managing Director Peter Thompson, believes backing the Blues very much reflects their company philosophy. “We are Auckland’s largest real estate company and for us it is all about giving back to
Auckland,’ says Thompson, a director of Auckland Rugby. “Our whole focus is family. We are a company which fully supports sport and we want to see people active and out and about.” Besides their support of the Blues the company sponsor Auckland Rugby as well as the Northern Mystics netball team. They also back a range of other sporting events such as the ITU World Series Triathlon staged in downtown Auckland and they are the presenting partner for the World Masters Games 2017. Like any strong relationship both Barfoot & Thompson and the Blues see a genuine benefit from the partnership. Thompson says the company can assist players through their business development programme where experts will
offer financial advice on everything to buying a car to where to invest their money for life after rugby. “I have a good relationship with the players - a good number of which came through the Blues before winning the 2011 World Cup with the All Blacks,” he explains. “It is great seeing the team develop and to enjoy a great relationship with a senior player like Keven Mealamu - a Barfoot & Thompson ambassador - is the pleasure we get out of it.” So for how much longer does he believe the partnership will continue? “While we enjoy the association and they continue to enjoy us I can’t see it finishing for many years,” he adds.

PROFILE:
JIMMY COWAN For anybody aware of New Zealand rugby, the name Jimmy Cowan is a familiar one. He has, after all, played first-class rugby for the Highlanders and Bristol and helped the All Blacks win the 2011 World Cup. But what may come as a surprise to many is that the staunch Southlander is now playing for the Blues. “I’m up here to play some good hard rugby,” said Cowan. I’m looking forward to the year ahead – it’s going to be exciting. There’s some huge talent here.” Cowan returned to New Zealand after a two-year stint with Gloucester Rugby and decided to move straight into the Blues at the end of 2014. But says he will face a set of new challenges here in New Zealand. “I believe it’s a lot faster here and they have a better skill set here in New Zealand,” he said. “It’s a big step up, but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to and I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of the fans.” The half-back will also be filling a much needed role in the Blues, bringing experience to a squad full of young talent. Cowan has been recognised for his hard work ethic by players and coaches alike. Sir Graham Henry called Cowan a valuable asset for the All Blacks, saying “He was a team member, who gave everything he could for the team. He was passionate about playing for the All Blacks, so he was a key member, over the time I was involved.’’ Fellow All Black and South Island original Dan Carter rates Cowan as one of the strongest defensive halfbacks. ‘’He was so strong around the breakdown. When you had big ball carriers coming down that channel, he’d stop them. He used his strength and size to his advantage,” said Carter. Blues fans can be glad that Cowan will be bringing this skill set to the Blues.

THE VOICE OF THE BLUES Meet Anthony Niterl, the new voice of the Blues. Anthony will be hosting the Blues’ home games at QBE Stadium and Eden Park this coming season, using his love of sport and Auckland to give our fans what they’re looking for this year. Of course, he can’t control what happens during the game, but he does say the crowd has an important role to play in boosting the team’s performance. “You need to have the crowd support and people getting behind the team’s success, Anthony said. “I’d just love to bring enthusiasm and passion into the Blues and it’s be a great to build up a great presence and culture for the team. Anthony will be using his strong sporting background to give the fans a great night out. He was a utility forward for Saint Kentigern College during high
school, but spent more time skipping class to be the First XV’s linesman rather than playing
for the team. He then committed to a career in cricket. This change of code took Anthony to the UK as a professional
athlete, playing in Cambridge and Surrey, before he returned down-under to play for Perth’s ACE Cricket Academy. All this and now game-day presenting? This athlete is bringing more to the table than just sporting prowess. He describes himself as “that guy, the one who will bring humour and spontaneity to every situation. He spent eight years in television for Moon TV, working with Leigh Hart and acting on the Late Night Breakfast Show. “I always wanted to get into acting or broadcasting, said Anthony. So during those eight years, he put his hand up for the projects that would “push the boundaries. This included being rubbed down with olive oil on national television for a healthy living segment. Blues fans can be grateful that no oil will be present on game day.

JOSEPH EDWARDS FLANKER | 1.94M | 113KG | 21YR | SAINT KENTIGERN COLLEGE Joseph Edwards is returning to the Blues squad after super rugby seasons stalled by injury. In 2013, Joe had reconstruction surgery on his left shoulder and 2014 brought a fractured tibia and a high ankle sprain during an Auckland ITM cup game. The injuries may have brought a long recovery, but Joe says they caused him to grow mentally and physically. Joe will be answering the questions in this week’s Q&A.
Tell us something not many people know about you. I won the year five speech competition at Pakuranga Heights Primary School. It was on Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. What has been your career highlight to date? Representing my country and playing for the New Zealand Under-20 team on the France tour in 2013. What’s your earliest rugby memory? Running around barefoot in the early mornings and getting cold toes. What’s your personal goal for the season? To play consistently and enjoy the journey.

Who’s your biggest role model and why? My father. He’s my biggest critic, but he’s also my biggest supporter. I come home from a game and he’s always got a piece of advice for me and is always looking for ways for me to improve. He’s a people person and a carer and that’s something I want to base myself on. DAVE SHAW ON
TEAM NUTRITION A professional rugby player puts his body through three to four hours of intensive training during the day, combined with skills and player development. So to keep sharp, they need to eat. And eat a lot. The Blues are no exception, but team nutritionist Dave Shaw says there are methods to the eating madness. It’s about keeping the body fuelled with the right nutrients for training and games, says Shaw. “The most important things are recovery and preparation,” says Dave. “This is essentially based on getting the right amounts of protein, carbohydrate and fluid at the right times.” Which means all of the players are encouraged to choose the right foods and portion sizes to match their training load. To help achieve this, food is always on hand, from breakfast to post-workout recovery shakes and lunches.
TYPICAL TRAINING DAY DIET BREAKFAST: • 2-3 eggs • 2-3 pieces of toast • Breakfast shake with milk and a combination of either fruit, protein, bananas and nuts. LUNCH: • A meat, could be ham, chicken, or steak, depending on the day • 1-2 carbohydrate options – pasta salad, potato salad or bread • Salad with green leaf and anything that’s in season
“We make sure everybody is educated so they know how to make the right decisions.” DAVE SHAW
The team eat breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner together, which means meal times are as much about recovery as they are about community. Each player is given food guidelines from Dave based on their needs, whether it’s for weight management, preparing for games or general health. The intention is to give the players a sense of responsibility when it comes to these shared meals and choosing what to eat. “It’s very social, but we make sure everybody is educated so they know how to make the right decisions,” he said. As a result, the team has been able to enjoy healthy and tasty meals before and after training. The team’s favourite? “Probably roast chicken. They’ve been going through 16 chickens at lunch.”
DINNER: • Approx. 300g of meat/chicken/ fish • 1-2 serves of carbohydrate – pasta, brown rice, potatoes, pita bread etc. • Plenty of vegetables – the players can eat as much as they want DESSERT: • Ice cream, yoghurt, fruit SNACKS: The team typically has 2-3 snacks each day. The snacks tend to involve food that provides a combination of protein, carbohydrate and fluid flavoured milk for example. Also things like fruit, nuts and muesli bars. Ice blocks also go down a treat.
