The Goose Step instead of a pass

Good players take opportunities, great players make them. Investec supports the entrepreneurial spirit. It’s the spirit that draws in the tackle and then changes momentum with a goose step instead of the pass. The one that delivers the unexpected. It’s the same spirit that doesn’t wait for opportunities, it goes out to make them.

BLUES EXPERIENCE

all-Wright They say all good things come to those who wait. Well it’s taken a decade for Taniwha prop Ross Wright to get his chance at the Blues.

The 31-year-old, born and bred in Wellsford, got his chance when selected for NZ Maori for their end of season tour to Canada and Europe late last year. Blues coach Tana Umaga was the assistant coach there and was impressed by the work ethic and versatility of Wright, who plays both prop and hooker. Wright took up the offer for a three-week stint pre-season as cover while the All Blacks were out of action. Five months later Wright remains an integral part of the team, having earned six caps, a tour to South Africa and more than held his own in the hustle and bustle of Investec Super Rugby.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve tried to make the team for eight or nine years – it’s so awesome,” Wright said. “I thought I would be there for three weeks but here I am still here and loving every minute of the experience.” Wright originally earned a living in the fencing business before moving to Whangarei when he was first selected for Northland 10 years ago. He started a lawn mowing business with Cameron Goodhue, brother of Blues lock Josh, before focussing fully on his rugby. “It has been everything I thought it would be. I am learning so much off the guys who’ve been here for a number of years and now I think I belong. “It’s helped with a few of the Taniwha boys here who’ve made it easy to settle.” Wright believes his inclusion, along with a bunch from the Taniwhas, will help further bolster the rugby stocks in Northland with the benefit of playing professional rugby. And he wants more. “It’s something I definitely want to repeat. Hopefully there’s no more fencing days for me.”

“It’s a dream come true. I have tried to make the team for eight or nine years – it’s so awesome,” ROSS WRIGHT BLUES VS JAGUARES | 28 APRIL 20 18 7

NEW

The Price is right AT THE BLUES The man responsible for the fitness levels of the Blues runs the ship with military precision. That is because the Blues Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jason Price spent 10 years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. “Pricey” has been passionate about rugby since his school days in Southland where he played for the province through the age groups. “The reality is that I was never big enough to pursue rugby so I initially looked at being a PE teacher. To be honest I didn’t know we had an Air Force until I went down that path.” Jason joined up as a physical trainer initially at Blenheim and then Whenuapai, during which time he gained his degree and following 10 years in the Air Force he left to complete a post graduate diploma in health science. He got an intern role at the Blues that year, moving up to assistant strength and conditioning coach and then to head trainer. “I love rugby and I love pushing the boundaries and keeping fit – this role is a way of doing all of those things. And I love seeing players achieve and go as far as they can.”

Jason said amongst players there has been a continued rise in game numbers over the last three to four years in particular. “They are definitely fitter, faster and stronger. And it is great to see the guys improve over the last few years. “Take Rieko for example – he is 107 kgs, he has real pace, and he is impressive with the weight he can shift and how fast he can shift it. It is pretty mind-blowing where they are at.” Running is a core part of the fitness regime. “If they are running-fit then they will do quite well on the field so we put quite an emphasis on running to make sure that whatever their weight that they are fit.” Jason said his team of trainers are all motivated to create a positive environment for the players, regardless of their results.

“When the boys walk in, we turn the music on and get the tyres pumped up – and do whatever you can do to lift the mood and get the boys moving. “We are lucky to work in a quality facility, with good people and quality athletes.”

“I love seeing players achieve and go as far as they can.” JASON PRICE
