Make Success Accessible Thanks to the generosity of donors, Barnard transforms the lives of students who would not be able to attend the College without financial aid. Barnard meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for incoming students. We adhere to a fully need-blind admission policy, admitting increasingly diverse and selective classes of students regardless of their financial background.
Approximately 50 percent of Barnard students receive some form of financial aid. More than $38 million in grants is awarded annually, and the average grant aid awarded is $40,802. As a result, Barnard women graduate with an average student loan burden of $16,334—well below the national average. Keeping the Barnard experience accessible to all students depends on strong financial aid powered by a growing endowment. And a healthy endowment depends on donors like you. The Bold Standard / A Campaign for Barnard will allow us to nearly double our endowment, our most important source of financial security. Put simply, increasing the endowment—particularly for financial aid— is the College’s highest fiscal priority.

Scholarship Recipient Jareline Guerrero ’15 My interest in Barnard began early—my daily high school commute from the Bronx to the Upper East Side took me by the Morningside Heights campus. I decided to learn about the College, and by my junior year I was committed to doing well, both in school and on the SATs, so I could attend. As the daughter of immigrants, I was constantly told that hard work and perseverance would lead to a successful life. But students from low-income families still face financial obstacles no matter how hard they work. My acceptance to Barnard is one of the proudest moments of my life, and I think intelligent, hopeful, hardworking women who did not choose their economic status deserve to feel that kind of validation. Without the scholarships I received, I wouldn’t have been able to undergo the beautiful, challenging experience that attending Barnard made possible. My time there made me the woman I am today. Barnard taught me to love my voice and my ideas. I navigated tough classes and learned how to truly trust myself and my ability to think critically. Without the scholarships I received, I would never have had this opportunity. Jareline is currently working with Uncommon Schools as a teacher at North Star Academy’s West Side Park campus in Newark, New Jersey

Alumna Donor Terry Newman ’79 I love interacting with students through my role as a volunteer leader at Barnard. They have an inspiring entrepreneurial spirit—they roll up their sleeves, take the initiative, and get things done. As the Student Government President said to me last year, she and her classmates entered the College as students and left as leaders. A Barnard education is of immeasurable value. Barnard taught me to think, question, and learn about history and culture from different perspectives. It’s incredibly important for us to give generously—the scholarships created with our donations help attract the students who will become the extraordinary leaders the future is counting on. Both of my grandmothers were incredibly smart, talented women who valued women’s education, but neither had the opportunity to even graduate from high school due to their economic circumstances. That’s why I endowed a scholarship in their names — so that young women who might not have the financial means can continue their education at Barnard, a leader in higher education for women. Terry is President of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College

Fund the Future You can help Barnard meet its commitment to providing financial aid to all qualified applicants by making a gift to the College’s endowment. Endowed scholarships ensure that funds are available in perpetuity to help Barnard students afford tuition costs. These funds are permanently invested in Barnard’s endowment and, each year, an amount equal to approximately five percent of the fund’s value is made available in the College’s operating budget for financial aid support. Through your gift to The Bold Standard / A Campaign for Barnard, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you will be making a difference in the lives of bright, hard-working young women for generations to come.
