A Great Education Begins with Great Educators Barnard’s faculty is the heart of our academic excellence. A community of dedicated, highly distinguished scholars, faculty members are fully involved in strengthening the College’s curriculum and keeping it innovative, relevant, and engaging. They maintain a high level of dedication as teachers, take seriously their roles as mentors, and consistently demand rigor and creativity from their students. Decades after graduation, our alumnae still warmly remember the professors whose words and guidance helped lead them to discover their passions and embark on paths to professional success. Those pivotal conversations happen at Barnard every day, and the faculty continue to imbue our students with drive, enthusiasm, and dedication to their fields.
Because Barnard faculty members are reviewed for tenure twice, first at Barnard and then at Columbia, the criteria for outstanding performance are extraordinarily high. Supporting Barnard’s faculty by establishing an endowed professorship or endowed faculty research fund is one of the most important and gratifying ways that donors can sustain the College’s excellence.

Endowed Faculty Research Support
Endowed Professorships are one of the highest honors the College can bestow upon faculty who have made extraordinary contributions to research and teaching. Along with their prestige and financial rewards, named professorships attest to a faculty member’s standing among peers, both at Barnard and in greater academia. They also enable Barnard to attract renowned scholars to our faculty.
Endowed Faculty Research makes Barnard attractive to the world’s best scholars and helps retain faculty. It also often creates opportunities for Barnard students to participate in groundbreaking work. Research advances the many disciplines in which our faculty work, and provides our students with invaluable experience working with professionals at the highest levels of their fields of study.

Professor Rachel Austin Barnard is an elite liberal arts college embedded in a world-class research university and nestled in the intellectual richness of New York City—a very attractive package. Once I became acquainted with the College and its stellar faculty, I knew I wanted to be part of the Chemistry Department and the institution. Collaborating with leading scholars while still centering my lab work at the undergraduate level is a perfect balance for me. I have also long been interested in helping women advance in science, so Barnard’s status as a leading women’s college is an added incentive. I am deeply honored to hold the Diana T. and P. Roy Vagelos Endowed Professorship in Chemistry. To me, it is an affirmation of certain core ideas and of the work I’ve been doing for the last 20 years. It affirms the importance of working with young students at an early moment, just as they’re discovering their own unique scientific “voice.” That, as much as any scientific idea, has been at the heart of my work throughout my career.

Donors Diana T. Vagelos ’55 and P. Roy Vagelos Our alma maters have always been among our top giving priorities. One of the things we’ve learned through supporting them is that every institution of higher education is dependent on the quality of its faculty. Hiring top academics who pursue teaching and research equally—an ideal combination—is very difficult because competition among schools and professional sectors is fierce. Offering endowed positions is the best way to attract, recruit, and retain such professors, because it gives them the security that is vital to their careers. We are delighted that Rachel Austin has been named the inaugural Diana T. and P. Roy Vagelos Professor of Chemistry. She has that rare, wonderful capacity to be excited by teaching undergraduates while also making time for a productive research career. Her discipline, curiosity, and energy undoubtedly make her a great role model for Barnard students.
