Try to limit time in the sun (especially for little ones) between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to commonly forgotten areas like ears, nose, lips, neck, hands, tops of feet and along your hairline.

Look for the words “Broad Spectrum” on the label.

Be aware that no sunscreen is “waterproof.” If you’re in and out of the water, be sure to reapply more often.

Ask any grill master how to cook a steak and you’re certain to get a multitude of different answers. Gas and fast, low and slow, sear and roast…the list goes on. One method that you may not have heard about or tried is the reverse sear method. With the gaining popularity of ceramic smokers, this method has proven itself to churn out consistent, quality steaks time and time again.

TO START, marinate or season your steak to your preference. If you want to get fancy like I do, lightly coat your steak with olive oil and then hit it with a coating of sea salt and coarse cracked pepper. You want your steaks at room temperature when they go on the pit, so plan accordingly here.

BRING YOUR SMOKER to a surface temperature of around 225-250°F using indirect cooking. In other words, you don’t want the steak directly exposed to the coals or fire. To produce the best results, use a temperature probe to monitor the meat temperature as it cooks.

Once the internal temperature of your steak reaches your target zone, pull the steaks and let them rest while you crank up the fire. I like to pull my steaks at 120°F, and while they’re resting, the internal temp should creep up to between 125-130°F. WHILE YOUR STEAKS ARE RESTING, crank PRO TIP: Before grilling, allow steaks to come down to room temperature

I immediately knew it was something different, so I quickly picked up my camera, and as I zoomed in, I caught the silhouette of a four-legged animal trotting across the sand. As it got closer, I realized it was a coyote coming towards me. I wasn’t worried much and just kept snapping pictures as she made her way closer. She never missed a step, nor paid much attention to me. She went around my truck and continued on; she was so close at one point that I was unable to focus my lens. Without a doubt, a rare but very unique experience that I won’t forget.

The most basic method of tracing different columns of water is the countdown method. When your lure lands, start counting until it hits bottom, then begin your retrieve, tracing roughly 4 to 24 inches from the floor, or even bouncing it along the bottom. On your next cast, begin retrieving three seconds earlier, essentially placing your bait in the water column right above the bottom column. Next cast, three seconds earlier than that, so that now you’re in an even higher column. Continue this method until you’re immediately working the lure when it hits the water, tracing now the top column (4 to 24 inches under the water’s surface). Do this as you cast around and try different locations. Once you locate the depth the fish are at, then you can make adjustments, such as switching to lures that specialize in running that water column, or that are better at a specific action, etc.

Remember that when wind, current, and waves make getting down to the bottom harder, don’t be afraid to use heavier jigs. Use lighter ones if the conditions are favorable. There are many methods to search for fish, but the countdown method is tried and true. Use it properly, and I assure you, you’ll be more successful on the water this summer. Unfortunately, I have trouble fishing in water deeper than about eight feet—heck, I can’t count past 10 when my shoes are on!

he next generation of extreme water sports has arrived on the Texas coast, delivering an option for those looking to surf but unable to find any waves. Introducing
