12. DOCUMENTARY

Abstract of Giuseppe D’Alessandro’s thesis Object: Designing shelters for homeless people, witnessing the intervention with a documentary. Many people live in the streets. The city of Naples assures them, with the help of associations and volunteers, a meal per day and dorms, but many of homeless people prefer to sleep in the streets or under some porticos of the city anyway, for variuos reasons. I would design low-impact shelters, made with recycled cardboard, produced by the company in which I work for two years, giving them together with meals, rugs and clothes during the daily distribution round.

Partners to be involved: A volunteer association, a cardboard furniture company, a social center and homeless people are interested in this project. Design Concept: Origami. The name of this origami is Yoshimura, that means “good village”. The project will include the industrial process to fold the origami in a larger scale, with cardboard.

Tasks: Making visible the invisible; do not leave anyone in solitude; give a temporary shield against humidity and cold winds. When, Where: Shelters will be designed to work in winter under Naples’ porticos, arcades and galleries.

I started gathering information from all the subjects I want to involve in the project, from the president of the volunteers’ association to the company (Formaperta) that will produce the shelters. I recorded interviews to understand why those people sleep in the streets, looking for their point of view, discovering incredible stories.
