DEAR RESIDENTS OF BORO PARK, It’s a true pleasure to become a part of the hustle and bustle of your busy streets! We know you’ve all got a lot going on — but we also know that there’s always time for a quality read. To that end, we bring you The Boro Park View. If you’ve been in Monsey anytime in the last four years, you’ve probably seen or even read The Monsey View, the publication that’s truly “the talk of town.” To date, we’ve published more than 200 amazing issues in which we’ve covered a plethora of topics ranging from health to home improvement — and everything in between. We’ve also featured contests with fantastic prizes and have initiated campaigns that have united the entire community. There’s always something new and exciting to discover in our pages! Perhaps that’s the reason why we’ve heard from so many Boro Parkers that they wanted us to move to Brooklyn… We took your request seriously, and here we are. Welcome to The Boro Park View, sister publication of The Monsey View! Now you can share the same reads as your relatives and friends in Monsey and have even more to talk about. We hope that The Boro Park View will find a permanent place in your home and will add great joy to your life.

Parshas Shoftim By: Malka Schneps
“This is amazing!” shouted four-year-old Chany to her brother Yehudah as they skipped ahead of their father down the trail through the woods. They were having a delightful day, exploring nature as well as bonding as a family. Then, all at once, the fun turned to fear for little Chany, as the trail ended at a brook that appeared to the small child to be a large, raging river. The water gushed past her with such a fury that it sent a shiver down her spine. “Yehudah,” Chany quivered. “I can’t cross this water. It’s too big and powerful for me. I’ll be swept away!” “You’re right,” agreed Yehudah. “It is too big and powerful for you, and if you tried to cross it, you would be swept away.” Chany turned to Yehudah, her eyes wide in fear as she whispered, “What are we going to do?” Yehudah smiled reassuringly, “I hiked this trail with Tatty many times, but I was just as scared as you the first time. This brook is definitely too big for a small child, but it is not too big for Tatty. He just picked me up and jumped across!” “That’s right,” smiled their father as he stepped beside them. “Don’t be afraid. You just hold on to me, and I will carry you safely to the other side.” It says in this week’s parsha, “When you go out to war against your enemies… do not be afraid of them, for Hashem, your G-d,
42 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
is with you…” (Devarim 20:1). The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh explains that this pasuk is alluding to the ultimate war, a battle which we must all fight: the war against the yetzer hara. The Ohr HaChaim also points out a seemingly disheartening fact about that war — we cannot win this war. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, explains the three reasons we cannot defeat the yetzer hara as follows: (1) The yetzer hara has far more experience in fighting this battle than we do; (2) We naturally desire everything that the yetzer hara dangles before us; and (3) After a person commits many aveiros, chas v’shalom, the yetzer hara grows even stronger. With these factors weighing down upon us, it seems impossible that we could ever succeed in defeating the yetzer hara. And now, as we proceed through Elul and work hard to do teshuvah, it seems unlikely that we would ever be able to do teshuvah. As the Ohr HaChaim states, it is not possible for us to succeed. What is the answer? Is there any hope for us? The Ohr HaChaim answers that the remedy is contained within the pasuk: “... Do not be afraid, for Hashem is with you.” If a person sincerely desires to be pure, then Hashem’s right hand receives him, he becomes attached to Hashem, and Hashem will defeat the enemy. The key here is that we must sincerely desire to be pure, and we must not be afraid, trusting Hashem. If a person sincerely de-
sires to be pure, then he will do everything within his power to fight off the enemy. We must do everything we can to purify ourselves and do teshuvah, especially now during Elul. As we make our cheshbon hanefesh, we should aim to be as honest with ourselves as possible. This week’s parsha begins, “Shoftim v’shotrim titen l’cha b’chal sh’arecha… — Judges and officers you shall appoint in all of your cities…” (Devarim 16:18). R’ Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, points out that the word “l’cha” appears superfluous. R’ Moshe concludes that the inclusion of the word “l’cha” means the Torah is not only enjoining us to set up a communal system of judges and officers, but that each of us is to appoint ourselves to act as a judge and an enforcement officer over our own behavior. But will it help? Can we ever really change our behavior? Do we have the power to win such a great battle? No, not on our own — but with Hashem’s help, we absolutely can. We must fight as hard as we can to withstand the temptations of the yetzer hara, even though we cannot win the fight on our own. But our Father is with us, and He will pick us up and carry us across, like the father in the story above. Indeed, we are all like little Chany. We see the raging river and we tremble in fear, knowing that we cannot succeed — the yetzer hara will surely sweep us away. But we need not fear. If we cling to our Father, He will carry us across safely.

Nutritious Kosher Meals and Wholesome Fun at Annual Summer Lunch Program Approximately 2,500 strictly kosher, nutritious lunches were provided at no cost to Boro Park children during the last week of August as part of the annual lunch program run by the Boro Park Jewish Community Council in partnership with the Met Council. The program, open to all children under the age of 18, has been operating for the last several years to ensure that kids who are home from camp and have yet to start school have a solid, healthy afternoon meal. As in the past, lunches were distributed at Gravesend Park at 18th Avenue and 56th Street, with a second location set up this year at 15th Avenue and 37th Street to accommodate an even larger number of participants. In addition to enjoying a wholesome lunch, children also enjoyed fun activities, arts and crafts and balloons, with free school-supply-filled backpacks distributed on August 25th. Among the local officials who visited the lunch program to show their support were City Councilmen Kalman Yeger, Brad Lander and Mathieu Eugene, and Assemblymen Simcha Eichenstein and Bobby Carroll. “We are very excited to have had yet another opportunity to serve the Boro Park community,” said BPJCC CEO Rabbi Greenstein. “It was an honor to join with Met Council on this program and on so many others to help the local community.”
String of Attacks Prompts Opening of Mayoral Hate Crimes Office Coming through on a promise made in June at his annual Jewish heritage barbeque, Mayor Bill de Blasio will be opening a new office dedicated to preventing and investigating hate crimes. City Councilman Chaim Deutsch was one of three cosponsors of legislation that resulted in the creation of the Office of the Prevention of Hate. Deutsch, chairman of the City Council’s Jewish Caucus, teamed up with fellow councilmen Mark Levine and Donovan Richards on the legislation. Deutsch was openly critical of the mayor for drag-

ging his feet on opening the promised office after Rabbi Abraham Gopin was attacked in a Crown Heights park on August 27th. Rabbi Gopin, the father-in-law of singer Benny Friedman, told police that he believed that the man who attacked him, first with a brick and then with a large rock, was trying to kill him. The 63-year-old rabbi sustained a broken nose, lost two teeth and received several stitches as a result of the attack. The NYPD, which is treating the incident as a hate crime, is offering a reward of $2,500 for any information leading to the arrest of Rabbi Gopin’s assailant. Further unsettling area residents, two more attacks took place within days, with a Chasidic driver hit by a hard object as he sat in his delivery truck in Crown Heights on August 29th. Another incident took place in Flatbush last Shabbos afternoon, with two Jewish men, ages 48 and 19, assaulted by a group of three men on E15th Street near Avenue J. City Councilman Chaim Deutsch noted that hate crimes are on the rise in New York City, with anti-Semitic incidents making up more than half of the bias attacks reported this year. “It seems that every day we are hearing of another assault, another swastika, another incident of hate against our fellow Jewish New Yorkers, and particularly those who are obviously religious,” Deutsch told The Boro Park View. Deutsch said that he and Councilman Kalman Yeger had collaborated to allocate millions of dollars to pay for the installation of NYPD security cameras around local parks, playgrounds, schools and houses of worship. A push is also underway to obtain funding for mental health resources as another step in reducing bias crimes. “With all of these components working together effectively, I believe we can make a substantial impact and reduce hate crimes across the city,” said Deutsch.

With a hungry look in his eyes, he looked into the distance, gripping the wrought iron bars. His cheek already had a reddened imprint of a leaf, left there by the metal carvings, but he didn’t feel anything. His eyes gazed into the night in an effort to see something. But, like every night, nothing happened. He shook the gate and wept quietly, tearlessly and soundlessly. The gate responded with thin wails of its own. Perhaps that was why he didn’t hear the footsteps approaching from behind him. “Gustav, what is going to be with you?” The child shrugged. “Again you’re out here, shaking in your pajamas? Are you waiting for the soldiers to come and kill you, or do you prefer to die from pneumonia?” The man behind him laughed at his usual joke. “Maybe I need to try and leave you outside for one night,” he said. “Come.” And he stuck his big hand into the boy’s small one. “No!” the boy objected. As usual. “Don’t tell me no. Come!” Theodore gripped Gustav’s shoulders forcefully, and the boy writhed away, flailing his arms and legs. He closed his eyes, waiting for the blow. But remarkably, it did not come. Theodore left him alone. Gustav opened his eyes cautiously and saw Theodore standing next to him, his eyes narrowed as he looked very far off
into the distance, to the end of the fields beyond the gate. “Are you also waiting for your mother?” the boy whispered. Theodore looked at him with a smile, put a finger on his lips, and again, looked out into the distance. Gustav tried to figure out what he was seeing, because there really was nothing out there. No one ever came by. “What are you—” “Quiet, I said,” Theodore chided, annoyed. “Maybe I’m seeing soldiers who’ve come to get you. Maybe they saw in their binoculars that you’re standing near the gate. It would be better for you to go inside.” “Don’t want to.” The boy shrugged again. “And there’s no one out there anyway.” “There is,” Theodore replied, and lifted him up. “You see there, at the edge of the fields, someone moving? He’s coming closer.” He put the boy down on the path. “Run to the Father, Gustav, and tell him that someone is approaching the back gate and that he should hide you.” “Don’t want to,” the boy said. “He’ll put me in the cellar. And he doesn’t need to; it’s not soldiers. When the soldiers came last time, Janko told me what happened. A few soldiers came with guns to the main entrance, in the middle of the day. It’s not like now, where this person is coming like a thief in the night.” “I see you suddenly know how to

he was fast asleep and didn’t stir. “Here!” Nati repeated, looking in the general direction of the big window. Elisheva followed his gaze. The shutters were closed — how could he see a bird through them? Or hear one, during these busy evening hours? He lay down with resignation as Elisheva approached. “Good boy!” she said with a smile, and picked up his pacifier from the floor. “Good night, sweetie.” “Birdie,” he insisted, and pointed at the window yet again. Elisheva stroked his cheek and went over to open the window. As expected, all of the neighborhood birds were safely ensconced in their nests at this hour; not a one was in sight. “There’s no birdie here, Nati’le,” she said, and wended her way out of the room, taking care not to wake any of the sleeping children. “Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!”
Elisheva recoiled and spun around sharply. There was that noise again, and now it didn’t sound like a cell phone ring from outside. It was coming from here, from somewhere in this room. And it was such a familiar yet far-off noise... She stood frozen in place. Meir shifted and muttered something, but none of the other children moved. After all, the noise was not very loud, but it definitely gave her a jolt. She looked to the end of the room, near the window. Her eyes opened wide. In a flash, she dashed by the sleeping children and stood in front of the broken cuckoo clock. She stared at it, at the old clock that her father had given her when he’d moved into an assisted living facility. The old clock that hadn’t worked in more than twenty years. The wooden cuckoo bird stood in the tiny doorway and cuckooed loudly, over and over again. Eli-
sheva was unable to tear her gaze away from it, though she felt rather detached from the stormy reality that had just enveloped her. A faint sense that something was about to change flashed through her mind, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it. The cuckoo bird called, “Cuckoo!” for the 10th time, and then it slowly closed its beak and retreated into the little box, disappearing behind the red wooden door.
CHAPTER ONE “I’m going to warm up the bottles. Should I make a cup of tea for you, Elisheva?” Elisheva stopped rocking the playpen. “Yes, Gitty, thanks.” “In a minute she’ll fall asleep, and then we’ll be able to sit down for a few minutes together,” Gitty said. “How much sugar in your tea?”

She laughed and pushed the cup away. “And I got something so sweet! There’s no way I’m going to kvetch if there is a drop of saltiness mixed into it!” “What happened, Elisheva?” Mazal, the teacher of the toddler group, was standing at the door. “You sound really excited!” “She just had a grandson!” Gitty explained in a hushed voice. If Mazal had heard the minor commotion on the phone, then talking any louder was certainly liable to wake up some of the children. Within a few minutes, the whole staff had heard the good news, and a flurry of hugs and warm wishes followed. Even Mrs. Gottlieb came in to say that if things were calm, and Gitty was willing to take over for her, Elisheva could leave five to ten minutes early. Elisheva thanked her gratefully — and right at that moment, the Dvir twins woke up together. Elisheva hurried over, mentally saluting their mother for the hundredth time for managing with these babies at home. At the age of eight months, the twins still didn’t sleep for more than two hours straight, and when they woke up, it was always, always together. So she would leave a few minutes early and run to the hospital, and before that, she’d call the house to tell the news to whoever came home first…was it Chani today? And she would ask her to warm up

lunch for everyone. She would also call her father; she hoped he would be able to hear her well through the phone. He would surely be excited. And the children would be ecstatic and would start making plans for the shalom zachor, and the bris, and everything else that the birth of a new baby involved. She passed a hand over her forehead, and without noticing, her movements grew slower and more sluggish. “So, is there a name in the family that everyone’s expecting the baby to receive?” Gitty asked. Her little break was also over, and she was feeding a blue-eyed, very alert little boy. “Yes, there is someone,” Elisheva said tersely. “Who?” “My father-in-law, alav hashalom.” “So your husband will surely be very excited about this, huh?” “Sure.” Elisheva smiled, but the smile didn’t iron out the creases on her forehead. “Baruch Hashem.” Gitty looked at her for a long moment and then decided to back off. She continued attending to the children, who were waking up one after another, but every so often she glanced over at Elisheva. Something had changed suddenly; she seemed tense and preoccupied. She was acting normal, or at least almost normal — she sang to the babies, fed them, and laughed at their antics — but the crease between her eyes didn’t move from its place. In the end, Gitty just couldn’t contain herself. “Elisheva!” she said, sounding almost like she was scolding her. “You just had a grandson!” “I didn’t forget.” Elisheva smiled, but the smile wasn’t completely happy. There was also rebuke in her tone — and a warning: Don’t preach to me, young lady, whose whole life is still ahead of her. The warning didn’t help. “I’m glad you didn’t forget — because it sure looks like you did.” Gitty approached Elisheva, wondering how to sound supportive but not
nosey. “Is everything okay?” “Baruch Hashem. The baby is healthy.” “Nu?” Elisheva waved her hand, trying to appear nonchalant. “If it would have been a girl, it would have been easier for me, that’s all.” She picked up one of the Dvir twins who was crying again. “But, baruch Hashem, we are only grateful, believe me.” Gitty didn’t understand why having a boy first in the family was less preferable than having a girl, but decided now that she’d better clamp down on her curiosity. She didn’t say anything, and Elisheva, who already regretted her revealing remark a hundred times, was relieved at the pause in the interrogation and didn’t offer another word. What would Gitty think? That she wanted a girl so they could name her after her mother, aleha hashalom? Elisheva would have been very happy if that would have happened, but she hadn’t exactly pinned high hopes on Miri naming a daughter of hers Treina. So they would name the baby Shmuel, after her father-in-law, who had passed away seven months earlier. He had been a good man, a generous person, known for his placid nature. Eliyahu would be overjoyed. And she? She would suppress all of her worries, because as Eliyahu told her, worries wouldn’t solve the problems anyway. If Eliyahu was always able to be as placid and tranquil as his father, then she could also make the effort. Especially in light of the fact that little Shmuel would surely remind her, with his very presence, of what her father-in-law would always say: Hashem planned our path in life in the best possible way. We just need to daven so that the miracles can come down to the world. A generation goes, and a generation comes, and now new Shmuels were coming down to the world. To be continued...

who seeks to implement commonsense immigration reform with a strong emphasis on the rule of law, is a despot and a fascist. Opportunistic politicians and the political punditry play on these emotions to stir up the base, increase ratings and turn out the vote.
Election season is upon us. In today’s world of nonstop political news and media coverage, it appears that it always is. In theory, the deluge of political information is a positive development. An informed electorate is the bedrock of a functioning democracy. As Thomas Jefferson wrote, “An informed electorate is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” However, despite the ubiquitous availability of a plethora of information, we tend to read and listen to only those who share the same views as us. We are rarely challenged to understand a position that is at odds with our preconceived political views. We choose to hunker down in our self-imposed echo chambers and ignore the sage advice that “if one can only afford to buy one newspaper, buy the opposition’s.” The views of others are often denigrated and made out as foolish and silly, or — worse yet — portrayed as pure evil. Complicated issues get reduced to soundbites, and all nuance is lost. The issue becomes compounded due to commentators and columnists who seek to exploit the human emotions of outrage and anger to enhance and sustain their popularity and ratings. Passion is a strong motivating factor. The angrier that one gets, the better chance that one will be motivated to listen to their programs, read their papers and vote for their desired candidates. Many, if not most issues, are no longer discussed in terms of an actual cost-benefit analysis, but get sensationalized with over-the-top hyperbole. One who campaigns on a platform to raise taxes to cover government expenditures and to provide assistance to the needy, is described as robbing people of their freedom, and as a socialist or communist. One
Unfortunately, these feelings of hatred and rage inflame the passions of many in our community as well. The shul kiddush and the Shabbos table are not immune from heated discussions that often descend into anger, rage and name-calling. Middos get discarded, and often sinah, ka’as and lashon hara are the outcomes. Sadly, we are ensnared in the trap that is perfectly laid for us. Regrettably, even issues that should unite us, such as anti-Semitism and support for Jewish community needs and causes, no longer bind us. Instead, we use them as mere political tools and weapons for scoring political points. Many will choose to ignore egregious acts and overplay minor infractions based on the perpetrator’s political affiliation. Actions of one’s preferred candidate are excused away and easily dismissed, while the actions of one’s political opponents are rehashed over and over ad nauseam and never forgiven. The point of this upcoming column is not to convince one of the correctness and justness of a political cause or stream. The purpose of the column is to attempt to portray both sides of an issue concisely and rationally, so that even when we disagree, we do not view our political opponents as our evil enemies that are bent on destroying our country and way of life. The purpose of this column is to attempt to lower the temperature on the heated public debate that rips apart our country, tears the fabric of our community and destroys friendships. Toward this end, this column will provide background information on the political news of the day. It will portray the pros and cons of each issue in a balanced non-partisan manner. It will focus on the logic of each position and attempt to tune out the hyperbole and sensationalism that grips the political discourse of today. The point of this column is to help us be a truly informed electorate with a thorough grasp of the issues at hand. As John F. Kennedy famously said, “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past — let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”

North Carolina’s 9th District Special Election BACKGROUND: A special election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, in the 9th Congressional District of North Carolina. The 9th District includes the southeastern suburbs of Charlotte and stretches to Fayetteville in the eastern part of the state. The election is a redo of a November 2018 congressional election that was nullified due to the discovery of possible illegal activities by then-Republican-candidate Mike Harris. The race features GOP nominee State Senator Dan Bishop in a face-off against Democrat Dan McCready. McCready is a Marine Corps veteran who came within one thousand votes of winning the 2018 race. The district has been safely Republican since 1963, and in 2016, Trump carried the district by more than 11 points. However, the race is considered a tossup, and recent polling shows McCready leading Bishop by as much as 4 percentage points. WHY IT MATTERS: Being that Democrats already have a significant majority in the House of Representatives, this election will have little impact on the makeup and governing ability of Congress. However, North Carolina 09 is considered a bellwether district with real implications for the 2020 presidential race. Much of the race is being fought over national issues. Out-of-state money from super PACs (political action committees) is pouring into the coffers of both candidates. Democrats are trying to frame the election as a referendum on the policies of the Trump administration. Republicans are attempting to paint McCready with the brush of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and the squad.
60 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Additionally, over the past few years, North Carolina has seen an influx of immigrants from red states, and this election may be an indicator of the future voting patterns of the state as a whole. In a testament to the importance of the race, President Trump intends to campaign in the 9th District on the eve of the election and hold a Make America Great Again rally at Fayetteville airport on September 9. However, the impact of Trump's visit remains to be seen. His approval ratings in the district are currently net negative, with 47 percent approving of the president's performance and 48 percent disapproving.
Trade War Intensifies BACKGROUND: On Sunday morning, a new 15 percent tariff on Chinese goods went into effect. Unlike previous tariffs, these are likely to impact the U.S. consumer directly. These tariffs will target everyday household items such as clothing, toys, home goods and electronics, costing the average American household, as per JP Morgan’s estimate, $1,000 annually. President Trump told reporters that the administration is holding trade talks with the Chinese, and he tried to strike an overall positive tone. However, the administration is still sticking with its hardline policies and tough negotiating stance. WHY IT MATTERS: The outcome of the Chinese
trade war will directly impact the 2020 election. Should Trump successfully wrest concessions from the Chinese on intellectual property rights and import duties, it will be a significant policy accomplishment. It will be a successful resolution to a decadesold problem and a fulfillment of a central campaign
promise. However, should the Chinese hold tough and refuse to bend to the U.S. demands, Trump will find himself in a precarious situation. The tariffs will likely weigh on an already shaky economic environment. Trump will be faulted for the pain the tariffs are causing to rural farmers and will cause the American consumer. Additionally, it will negatively impact the carefully crafted image of Trump as a master negotiator. However, it is unlikely that Trump will be hammered on trade policies from the Democratic candidates for president. A tough stance on Chinese trade is actually in line with many of the more liberal-minded candidates, such as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Historically, the Republican party has been the party of free trade and open markets and has been adverse to any types of tariffs. By fighting a battle that aligns with the views of his opponents, Trump may be insulating himself from intense political blowback and criticism.
Gillibrand Withdraws From Race BACKGROUND: New York Senator Kris-
ten Gillibrand announced that she is withdrawing her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Gillibrand focused her campaign on women's issues such as equal pay and paid family leave. She criticized Joe Biden for his 1980 opposition to expanding the child tax credit. Even though women make up approximately 60 percent of the Democratic base, her campaign failed to attract the necessary enthusiasm and support to make her campaign viable. WHY IT MATTERS: According to Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight, Gillibrand likely withdrew from the race at this point to stay in the good graces of Democratic party leaders. She possibly decided that it was prudent to save her political capital for a possible future run for governor of New York State. It is also probable that she withdrew to aid her friends and political allies Kamala Harris and Corey Booker.

SEASONED CHEF Defrost tarts in the fridge for a few hours before use, and garnish with fruit right before serving.
At the end of every summer, I find it intensely challenging to get into yom tov prep mode. Maybe it’s because the lazy days of summer are ending and the overwhelming amount of spiritual and physical tasks that must be accomplished before Rosh Hashanah loom ahead. I always find that a basic to-do list and a menu sketch help with planning for the upcoming yomim tovim. When that is accomplished, I then start stocking my freezer with challah, meats and desserts — all of which freeze really well, these lovely tarts included. Wishing you a stress-free erev yom tov and a kesivah v’chasimah tovah! Note: I used the Wilton 1E tip to pipe all of the creams. Any large star tip can be used.

CRUST
STRAWBERRY MOUSSE
Dough yields enough for two tarts. 3 cups flour
2 tsp. unflavored gelatin (you can find this in any grocery near the jello) 3 T. cold water
¼ tsp. salt 3 sticks margarine at room temperature
10 oz. frozen strawberries, completely blended ¼ cup sugar
¾ cup confectioners sugar
12 ounces whip
1½ tsp. vanilla extract 1. Sift together the flour and salt.
1. Sprinkle gelatin over the cold water and let stand for five minutes.
2. In the bowl of a mixer, cream the margarine and confectioners sugar until light and fluffy.
2. In a small saucepan, combine the blended strawberries with the sugar and bring to a slight boil over medium heat.
3. Mix in vanilla. Lower speed and beat in the flour mixture until just incorporated.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the gelatin mixture, continuing to stir until well-combined.
4. Divide dough in two. One part can be frozen for another time or used for a second tart, and the other half should be refrigerated for about 30 minutes. 5. Preheat oven to 350°. Spray your tart pan lightly with oil spray. 6. Remove dough from fridge, press into tart pan and trim the edges neatly (you will have some extra dough). With a fork, gently prick the top of the dough randomly 5 times. 7. Bake for 25 minutes. Allow to cool completely. 8. This crust is rather fragile, so handle with care. I recommend that you freeze the crust before removing from the pan.
4. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve (to get the juice through the sieve faster, I put on a plastic glove and pushed the mixture through the sieve with my hand). The strawberry juice should now look smooth. 5. Refrigerate the juice for about 30 minutes. 6. Beat the whip in your mixer until stiff. Fold a third of the whip into the cooled strawberry mixture and then lightly mix the strawberry mixture with the rest of the whip. 7. Pipe or spread the strawberry mousse over the chocolate and strawberries.
GARNISH 6 ounces chocolate, melted
CHOCOLATE GANACHE 2 bars parve Schmerling’s Rosemarie chocolate or any good-quality chocolate 3 ounces whip About 5 frozen strawberries, chopped small 1. Place chocolate and whip in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave, stirring frequently, until chocolate is completely melted and combined with the whip. 2. Pour mixture over crust. Sprinkle the chopped strawberries on top along the center of the chocolate.
1. Cut two long pieces of parchment paper. Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate very thinly over one piece of parchment paper. Cover with the second piece of parchment, and gently but tightly roll up the layered parchment papers, taking care not to squeeze too hard. 2. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Remove from the fridge and unroll quickly so that the chocolate cracks. Place the shards decoratively on top of the strawberry mousse. 3. Refrigerate until ready to serve (or freeze and defrost completely prior to serving).

BY: MALKY LOWINGER Can you spell auslaut? Erysipelas? Bougainvillea? Aiguillette? Neither can I. But these were just a few of the random, obscure words that were spelled correctly by twelve-, thirteen- and fourteen-year-old kids at the 2019 Scripps Spelling Bee last May. These brainy kids became the co-champions of America’s most celebrated spelling bee, which resulted in their achieving nationwide fame and a hefty $50,000 grand prize! The concept of spelling bees, those official competitions in which contestants are asked to spell words correctly, originated in the United States, and is unique among English-speaking nations because, let’s face it: Figuring out how to spell an English word merely from its pronunciation can be quite challenging.
HISTORY
The first spelling bee known to us was held in this country in 1808. The concept was widely accepted, leading to the first National Spelling Bee competition in 1925. It was in 1941 that the Scripps Howard News Service decided to sponsor the competition, turning it into a highly anticipated national event that gets plenty of media attention. It is called the Scripps National Spelling Bee to this very day. Here’s how the Scripps Spelling Bee works: Every year, 11 million students across America compete in local spelling competitions. Winners proceed to the regional, and then statewide, competitions until local champions advance to the national championship event, which was held this past year on May 30 at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
UNPRECEDENTED EIGHT CHAMPIONS If you’ve ever watched a spelling bee, you know that it can be an emotional and nerve-wracking experience. The competition is fierce and tensions run high. Even in the audience, parents

pray, siblings squirm, and the atmosphere is intense. It’s not for the faint of heart. This year’s competition was especially fierce. Five hundred and sixty-five contestants competed during the four-day event, with groups of spellers being eliminated in round after round. The final showdown began at 10 a.m. and continued until past midnight. In the end, a total of eight co-champions managed to survive eight grueling rounds of spelling challenges. This marked the very first time that the championship was awarded to a group of winners. But not to worry. Each of the winners took home a championship trophy and a $50,000 cash award.
work and dedication,” he told an interviewer. “I typed up words from the dictionary and created spreadsheets, and then I’d review them after I was done.” His winning word was koinonia (huh?) which he easily spelled, because he had studied and memorized it while preparing for the competition. So is it all about memorization? Not really, says former spelling bee judge Linda Wood. “The way the children learn the words,” she points out, “is not just by rote and memorizing, but through etymology and learning roots, pronunciations, and multiple definitions.” Ananya Vinya, the 2017 champion, says it’s not just about spelling — it’s about knowledge. “By learning spelling,” said her father in a re-
GETTING READY
There’s a certain fascination in watching these focused youngsters easily rattle off the spelling of strange words like pendeloque and cernuous. How do they do it? Clearly these children are exceptionally bright, but there’s more to it than that. Fourteen-year-old Karthik Nemmani from Dallas won the competition in 2018. He says he spent considerable effort in preparing for the bee. “It requires a lot of

Spelling bees have nothing to do with actual bees. In fact, the word “bee” here refers to a gathering of people who come together for a common purpose. The word originated from a Middle English word “bene,” which means a gathering of people who participate in an event together.

SPELLING THEN AND NOW By: Rikki Klein
We’ve all heard the lament that today’s kids can’t spell. With the attitude of so many of the younger generation being “I don’t need to know how to spell; I’ll just use spell-check,” it’s no wonder that they can’t. Today’s standards are pretty high, but with no remorse over the lack of knowledge in this area and no desire to improve, some children are not motivated enough to become proficient spellers. That’s quite a contrast to children of over 100 years ago. The words to the right were part of a very comprehensive test, known as the Common Exam, given to thirteenyear-old students in the Bullitt County Schools (mostly one-room schools) in 1912. Students were required to memorize a vast amount of information in various subjects, and were urged to take these tests very seriously, as test results would affect their future schooling. It’s ironic to note that there’s a typo on the master spelling list. Endeavor was spelled as eneeavor due to a typesetting error. Maybe some things don’t change after all.

views are over, what happens next to these spelling champions? Are this year’s eight cochampions destined for greatness? Does winning a spelling competition prepare one for life? Is there any practical purpose in learning to memorize the spelling of words such as scherenschnitte, which, chances are, one will probably never put to good use? Some say no. There’s a small but vocal anti-bee movement who insist that memorizing words is a useless activity and a waste of time. It won’t help these kids gain critical thinking

They are, after all, performing in front of many people — about a million viewers watch the competition! The pressure is huge. The disappointment when things don’t work out well can be devastating. Others disagree. Valerie Miller is a past spelling champ who is a writer and editor today. She says her spelling bee experience helped her gain confidence and poise and jumpstarted her interest in a career based on words. Many former spelling champs have gone on to lead successful professional lives, says James Maguire, who actually tracked former champions and wrote a book about it called American Bee: The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds. “Whatever the menu of things they’re going to do,” he says, “that skill of single-minded focus is going to help them. Not only can they do that — they can do it under pressure.” According to Maguire, “More than half a dozen former champs from the past two decades excelled in math and science and went on to become physicians.” Some of the kids really enjoy the thrill of a competition. Ned Andrews, the 1994 spelling champ, says he still loves a mental challenge and is a “longtime regular entrant” in another running competition. Another former champ, Srinnivas Ayyagari, is today an attorney seeking a job in a highly competitive field. He says that because of his experiences
as a youngster, he’s used to tough competition. “There’s something that got lit at a very young age about pushing myself against the best,” said Ayyagari, “and feeling like I had a reason to do that.” Whether they are doctors or lawyers or just plain regular folk, former spelling bee contestants gain certain qualities, including performance poise, an appreciation of hard work and a love of language. And while the pressure may be overwhelming, it’s not much different than the pressure felt by youngsters who excel at other competitions or perform in musical productions. Spellers who make it to the final rounds generally learn how to win and lose gracefully, and to do so with confidence. According to one observer, spelling bees provide the opportunity for children who lack prowess in other areas to shine.
WORDS ARE POWERFUL TOOLS These days, most cellphones and computers are equipped with spell-check, so knowing how to spell properly is quickly becoming a dying art. You can write a letter, a book report, or even a thesis, and let the laptop decide whether ratatouille is spelled with two l’s . But knowledge is power, and words are arguably our most powerful tool of communication. Using them properly and spelling them correctly are skills that are invaluable and will serve us well for the rest of our lives.

My earliest association of a dictionary is that of an oversized red volume with yellowing pages. Between doing research for school assignments, looking up unfamiliar terminology we’d come across in books, and vigorous pronunciation bets, it was likely the most frequently used book in its section of our bookshelf. Later on, when my lightweight pocket version of Webster’s traveled to and from my little cubby in school, I wondered how the content of the trademark red volume could possibly have been made to fit into that little paperback. Fact is, the two were not all that similar.

THE FIRST AMERICAN ENGLISH-LANGUAGE DICTIONARY The original Webster’s Dictionary, compiled by Noah Webster, was completed in 1825. Webster spent 22 years compiling the data, during which he learned 26 new languages! There was a grand total of 70,000 words detailed in that first edition, around 50 percent of which had never been published in an English dictionary before. After three years of further editing and improving, the first American Diction-
Different variations released by dictionary publishers today include medical dictionaries, expanded editions, bilingual (translation) varieties, and a selection of abridged versions for convenient lookup and easy transporting. This explains the difference in size between the red dictionary back home and the softcover edition preferred by students nationwide.
ary of the English Language was published in 1828, priced between $15 and $20 (equal to a whopping $350 to $480 today!) per copy. Despite its hefty price and the impressive 2,500 copies sold, excessive printing costs at the time meant little profit at the end of the day, and Webster was forced to mortgage his home to finance his second version, which included an additional 5,000 words. Sadly, Webster died not long after its printing, at which point the two Merriam brothers purchased the dictionary rights and continued working on it under their new company name: Merriam-Webster. This brand remains popular today as Merriam-Webster continues to publish both print and electronic (Hangman, anybody?) dictionaries.

may find it interesting to know that there are people who actually get paid to carefully read through circulars, books and magazines during their nine-to-five jobs. These linguists, called lexicographers, are employed by dictionary publishing houses to serve as the intellects behind the myriads of definitions included in dictionaries. With utmost attention to detail, they single out and notate new words used by the English-speaking population, while
identifying words that are obsolete and should be omitted from subsequent editions. Lexicographers renew their data by adding updated words and researching origins and usage of older words. Although dictionaries are relied upon by many professors as the authority on word lists, they count on the general public to help them remain current. Anyone with evidence relating to the usage of words presently being researched is asked
If you’re a regular dictionary-reader, you already know that there are quite a few Yiddish words that have been sufficiently integrated into the English-speaking world to qualify as a dictionary entry. Some examples of these Yinglish (now that should be in the dictionary!) words are bubkes, chutzpah, glitch, schmaltz, schlep, bagel, kvetch and zaftig. Based on the muddle of Yiddish and English heard around us, there will surely be more added in the coming years.
LONGEST WORD Currently, the longest word in major English language dictionaries is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, which refers to a lung disease contracted by the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. Medically, it is actually the same ailment as silicosis, but for some reason, the disease merited a record-worthy name.

BY THE ERA In the 1940s, many of the words added to dictionaries were related to World War II, reflecting the topic dominating the thoughts and expressions of people during that time. Words added between 1940 and 1945 include saturation (bombing), jeep, bandits (hostile aircraft), flying bombs and cannibalizing (reusing old components). In contrast, new words in recent years emit a carefree tone, mirroring the dominating culture. Some examples are Sudoku, crowdfunding, selfies and declutter.
to submit their information to dictionary companies. With new additions, the overall rule is that a word is considered for inclusion after having appeared five times, in five different places, over
FAKE WORDS Don’t take every word you see in the dictionary at face value, since fake words have managed to make their way in there over the years. Although lexicographers are known to be extremely meticulous, human error will always exist. Below, find some of those ghost-words that have been listed in the Webster, Oxford and other dictionaries.
a period of five years. To keep track of this, each potential new word is carefully recorded and assigned to an editor who will follow its usage and frequency of use for a span of five years. This means that in order
to get that word you coined (and believe will greatly enhance the English language) included in the dictionary, the trick is getting people to use your expression, especially in print.
DORD – density Dord first appeared in the Webster dictionary in 1934 and remained there until 1939, when an editor realized the word’s lack of historical basis.
ABACOT – Cap of State, made like a double crown, worn anciently by the Kings of England This word found its way into many major dictionaries from the year 1664 and on, and almost 300 years later, the primary editor of the Oxford English Dictionary uncovered that it was actually an error based on the word bycoket, which means a hat with a high crown and wide brim. At this point, abacot has rejoined the dictionary as a variant of bycoket.
MOMBLISHNESS – muttering talk The definition of this word is similar to the word mumble, which could explain the scribal error. The correct word should have been the plural of ne-moubliemie, a French term for the forget-me-not flower.
ESQUIVALIENCE – the willful avoidance of one’s official responsibilities This word was first found in the second edition of the New Oxford American Dictionary, and was exposed as a fake word by an investigator who heard there was a fake word in that edition beginning with the letter E. When he came to the conclusion that the ghost word was esquivalience, he placed a call to the dictionary’s editor-inchief, who confirmed that it was so. It turns out one of their editors had invented the word, to be used as a method of detecting a fraudster’s attempt to steal their dictionary’s content.

CARING FOR
YOUR CANVAS BRIEFCASE While a canvas briefcase is extremely rugged and durable, it can begin to look dirty over time. Simple maintenance is the key to keeping it looking fresh, so every once in a while, use a damp cloth to lightly wipe down the outside of the bag. For deeper cleaning, follow these guidelines:
PREP FOR CLEANING:
HAND-WASH METHOD: 1. Fully submerge the briefcase in lukewarm water to which a gentle cleanser has been added. 2. Scrub it with a soft brush or cloth, being careful not to damage any delicate material. 3. Rinse the briefcase thoroughly with lukewarm water. Wring out the water or dab with a towel to absorb the water.
REMOVE DEBRIS: Turn your backpack inside out and vacuum the hard-to-reach corners.
MACHINE WASHING METHOD: 1. Place your briefcase in a mesh bag or old pillowcase. 2. Wash in cool water with gentle detergent, using the machine’s delicate or gentle cycle. Once the cycle is finished, wipe down the outside and inside compartments.

Certain chemicals and cleaning processes can damage the fabric so it’s best to follow the instructions. Remove all hanging and removable items, open all zippers and empty all pockets.

TIPS
REPAIRING A
SNAPPED HEADBAND We all know that feeling. You buy a brand new, adorable headband, but not even two days pass, and snap! The headband goes the way of all its predecessors. However, there’s no need to throw it out; it may be simple to fix.
WHEN THE HEADBAND IS WITHIN A CASEMENT OF FABRIC: 1. Purchase a cheap plastic headband the same size as the broken one. 2. Use sharp scissors to carefully snip open the fabric where the headband hits behind the ear. (Snip the side where the smaller portion of the snapped headband is.) 3. Gently ease the pieces out through the hole you made, smaller broken piece first. 4. Place the fabric, decorated side facedown, onto a flat surface. 5. Holding the new headband upsidedown, slip it into the fabric and gently guide it in until you reach the end. 6. Use a glue gun to seal the hole, or make a few stitches with a needle and thread. WHEN THE DESIGN IS GLUED OR SEWN ONTO THE HEADBAND: 1. Purchase a cheap plastic headband of the same size. 2. Remove all trimmings from the broken headband. To remove glue, dip a Q-tip into rubbing alcohol and saturate the area. Let it sit for a minute, and it’ll peel right off. 3. Glue the trimmings onto the surface of the new headband.

MAINTAINING
SHARP UNIFORM SKIRT PLEATS Proper ironing is the key to a pleated skirt that always looks as good as the day you bought it. The secret to easy ironing is in the washing. If a pleated skirt is properly washed, the pleats will lie much smoother. 1. Wash the skirt either by hand or by machine on a no-spin cycle. 2. While still wet, pleat the fabric by securing each pleat with pins, paper clips or bobby pins at the hem to hold them in place. Let it drip dry. 3. Using vinegar when pressing pleats will keep pleats really crisp and sharp. Place anywhere from a 2:1 to 10:1 ratio of water to vinegar into a spray bottle. (Don’t worry, the smell will fade quickly.) Once the skirt is dry, spray the water-vinegar solution onto a cloth, and lay the cloth over the pleats. PERFECTLY PRESSED 4. Press down on the pleats with the iron on the fabric’s apWHEN PRESSED propriate heat setting. Do not “iron” the pleats by moving FOR TIME: the iron back and forth, rather press down and hold. No time to drag out your iron and 5. Let cool. This is an important step; do not skip. ironing board? A hair-straightening iron works perfectly between buttons, where a regular iron NOTE: doesn’t fit, and it can smooth collar creases and other minor wrinkles. You may get away with infrequent ironing if you sew down the pleats at the hem before washing.

Runs are never welcome, especially because one is most likely to occur at the worst possible time! It’s always wise to be prepared beforehand.
WHEN THE INEVITABLE OCCURS, KEEP THE DAMAGE AT BAY WITH ONE OF THESE METHODS: 1. CLEAR NAIL POLISH:
Dab the polish around the hole or at both ends of the run. Allow to dry for five minutes.
2. HAIRSPRAY: Spray the area around the hole or
run. Let dry and repeat. (Don’t be afraid to be heavy-handed.) Once dry, the hairspray will temporarily stiffen the fibers of your hosiery. This is a great method to use if you are in a rush since hairspray dries almost instantly. DESPERATE SITUATIONS CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES… 1. GLUE/WHITE-OUT: If you’re nowhere near nail
polish or hairspray (read: not at home), most sticky substances will nip the run in the bud. 2. BE PREPARED: Keep clear nail polish or a travel
hairspray in your bag, or keep it simple — and pack a spare pair of stockings.

PRESERVING
SUEDE SHOES (AND BAGS)
Don’t you love plush products that hint of cold, crisp days on the horizon? But alas, by the time the season they were meant for actually arrives, it’s disappointing to see the soft material worn and stained, having lost its richness. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll enjoy them a lot longer. PROTECT IT: Before use, spray with a stain and
water protector that will prevent damage and also make stains easier to remove. ROUTINE CARE: Dust shoes by brushing them
with a soft towel or very soft brush.
towel, soaking up whatever you can. SPECIALTY CARE: For watermarks, use a steamer and lightly steam the mark from a distance. Immediately, wipe it with a soft, dry towel, and then gently brush it.
CAUTION!
Don’t wear your suede shoes when it’s raining! And it would be wise to put your briefcase in a shopping bag for the duration of a downpour. Once suede gets wet, a mineral deposit remains that’s hard to remove.
For stain removal, use plain water. With a soft toothbrush, apply small amounts to the fabric, scrubbing the stain softly. Let it sit a few minutes and then wipe it away with a soft cloth. If stain remains, repeat the process.
If a suede product does get wet, the first thing you should do is blot it with a water-absorbent
Always wipe or brush the material in the same direction to avoid ruining the fabric.

1.
Make sure the hair is well brushed so that there are no tangles.
2.
Part the hair in a deep side part.
3.
On the left side of the head near the part, pick up a small section of hair about 1 ½ inches wide, and divide it into three smaller sections.(Don’t start right at the beginning of the hairline.)
4.
Take the section on the right side and cross it over the middle, and then take the section on the left and cross it over the middle.
5.
Again, take the right section and cross it over the middle. Then take the left section and cross it over the middle, this time picking up a small amount of loose hair, bringing it into the middle of the braid.
6.
Repeat the previous step, crossing the right piece into the middle, followed by the left section — again picking up more hair and bringing it into the braid. Continue braiding until you reach the temple.
Note: As you are working, make sure the braid is angling towards the back and a bit downwards.
7.
Once the braid reaches the temple, braid the rest of the sections into a regular braid, tying it at the end with a small elastic band.
September 4, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 109 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Note: At this point you can loosen the braids a bit to make them look fuller by gently pulling apart the sections of each braid. You can also spray the braid with hairspray and smooth down any flyways.
8.
Repeat these steps on the right side, but this time you will be adding hair into the right section as you braid.
9.
When both braids are done, pull the hair into a ponytail (can be either a high or low ponytail), bringing in the braids towards the top. Secure the ponytail with a ponytail holder. Carefully remove the elastic bands from the ends of the braids and gently unravel the ends.
10.
Braid the ponytail into a regular braid and secure with a ponytail holder at the end. Wrap the braid around the top ponytail holder like a bun and pin it into place.

Our brains work in mysterious ways. Sometimes they hold on to the most trivial things — and let go of important ones. By using mnemonics, we encourage our minds to remember those bits and pieces that we definitely don’t want slipping away. Mnemonics are memory devices that transform dry and forgettable pieces of information into more memorable forms. These can be songs, rhymes, images, acronyms or sentences. Most of the time, the funnier the construction of the mnemonic, the more likely you’ll remember it!
Music is a very powerful tool in terms of memory retrieval, and that’s why you’ve probably been singing song mnemonics ever since you entered preschool. Typically, that’s how children absorb the alef-beis, the ABCs, the order of the Pesach Seder, and eventually, the 50 states, the list of U.S. presidents and so on.
Rhyme mnemonics, similar to music mnemonics, take advantage of the way chants, rhymes and short little poems manage to settle themselves into our memory. (You know how difficult it is to get rid of annoying little jingles that replay endlessly in your mind...) Some popular examples would be: Thirty days has September | April, June and November… or I before E | Except after C | Or when sounded as A | As in “neighbor” and “weigh.”
The next kind of mnemonic, referred to as an image mnemonic, works very well when try-

ing to remember the definition of a word, the name of a person, or other nugget of information. To create an image mnemonic, piece together an image, creating one component for each part of the word or name, and bingo! There you have your mnemonic. Here’s an example: You cannot, for the life of you, remember the difference between stationary and stationery. To help you remember that stationary with an “a” means to remain in one place, picture a large, three-dimensional letter A surrounded by cement blocks. It can’t move, now, can it? Here’s another example: You just met a person by the name of Aryeh Weinberg. You know you’re going to forget his name — but really don’t want to. To create an image mnemonic for his name, picture a lion (for Aryeh) standing in a puddle of wine (for Weinberg). Once you associate this particular mental image with this particular person, you’ll have a very hard time forgetting his name...
Creating an acronym to remember a short list is a very popular type of mnemonic. Think of your grammar teacher listing the FANBOYS (representing the list of coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), or your science teacher introducing you to Roy G. Biv (representing the colors on the spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Acronyms can be very useful if you’re stepping

into the grocery for a few things — without a list — and really, really don’t want to forget that you need BAMS, or bread, apple juice, milk and sugar.
The last — and most popular and most fun — mnemonic is the expression mnemonic, which is a great tool that can help you remember the spelling of a word, or a more complex list of items in a group. To use this mnemonic, create an expression, phrase or sentence where the first letter in each word represents either a letter or another word beginning with that letter.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! Compose a sentence as an expression mnemonic for either a list of items in a specific group or a difficult-to-spell word, and send it in to comments@thebpview. com so we can share it with the rest of our readers! In your submission, please include your name, age, phone number and the school you attend. HERE’S MINE TO GET YOU STARTED: To remember the eight parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection), remember to Never pet very angry alligators — promptly cease interaction!
One popular example of this would be: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally (which represents the order of operations in math: parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract). Another fun example, which lists the planets, is this: My very educated mother just served us noodles (for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). This method can also be used to remember the spelling of longer words. For example, if the wrong spelling of the word embarrass is always cause for much embarrassment, try to remember this: Every memory brings along rather ridiculous and surprising stories.)
