On a day steeped in tradition, you’ll be fulfilling the time-honored minhag of Pidyon Nefesh, and giving your children a powerful zechus they will carry into the holiest day of the year – as you support thousands of orphans who have no one to bless them this Erev Yom Kippur.

DON’T DOUBT YOUR DAVENING (Re: Remembering Myself, Issue 4) Miri Green’s trying ordeal was a very fitting read on Rosh Hashanah. Naturally, I was quite moved by her story; how could I not have been? It served as a timely reminder that even when life seems to be progressing on smooth terrain, there is so much we need to daven for. However, I don’t believe that our loving Father would penalize someone who remembered all of her loved ones in her tefillos. I actually found that suggestion somewhat disconcerting. The seforim tell us that when we pray for others, we ourselves are helped. I wish Mrs. Green good health and much ko’ach to continue being the fount of goodness she apparently is. And I pray that neither she, nor anyone else, should ever be plagued with any doubt as to whether offering up their sincere tefillos on behalf of others will come at the price of their own well-being. M. Steinberg

For all its allure, that kind of money can never buy happiness. That said, I’d do well to remember that we can’t write off money as

the root of all evil. To be fair, the obsessive pursuit of the almighty dollar has led to the downfall and depravity of many, but there is so much good that money can do. There’s a beautiful story told about a young chassid of Beis Aharon of Karlin that is quite fitting for this time of year — even though our weather is quite different from what they had there. One year in Karlin the snow came early, right in the middle of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. Being that the town suffered from frequent acts of antiSemitism, the townspeople had taken to building their sukkahs indoors, and they would remove their roofs for yom tov. In the days leading up to Sukkos, a young chassid braved the elements. As the snow came down on top of his Rebbe’s sukkah, he made sure to immediately clear it away. On Erev Sukkos, when all of Karlin was bemoaning the fact that their roofs were coated in ice, the chassid put on the s’chach and presented the Beis Aharon with a kosher sukkah. Overcome with joy at this precious gift, the Rebbe offered this young man a choice of rewards. He could opt to sit next to his Rebbe in Olam Haba, or he could choose untold wealth in Olam Hazeh. He chose the money. Some would find that choice somewhat shallow and materialistic, but it can be argued that this young man had his priorities straight. For the rest of his long life, he was the benevolent supporter of the town’s poor. While the beis medrash bench was sufficient for his nightly repose, when it came to another Yid, he was always at the ready to assist financially. Instead of choosing a reward that would benefit only him, he opted for the bracha that would enhance far more lives. And who’s to say that the Gan Eden he earned wasn’t even bigger than the one he was originally promised? It is absolutely true that as a one-tracked pursuit, great wealth can never buy happiness. But let’s not denigrate money either. When used wisely, money can do so much good. It can even buy Olam Haba. Tziri Hershkovitz

of my father-in-law this year, I’d like to share some tips on visiting a shivah house. Being menachem avel is so sad and uncomfortable, yet as the wonderful, caring people we are, we extend ourselves. Perhaps a change of perspective is all we need to be a true comfort to the aveilim. Instead of focusing on how to minimize our own discomfort, let’s think of only the avel and take our cues from her/him. Remember that there is no magic formula to take the pain away. Only the Avi yesomim v’Dayan almanos can truly understand and completely comfort. Here are some tips for being menachem avel. • It is customary to speak only after the avel has spoken, so let the mourner lead and take it from there. Don’t be afraid of silence; your presence and quiet comfort mean more than you can imagine. • Mention something special about the niftar if you can, be it a middah, a story or a life lesson you’ve learned from him/her. • Speak less rather than say the wrong thing. In one attempt to comfort my mother-in-law, a woman enthused that it was a chesed that my shver was not sick for a long time. “It was so good that he didn’t have to mitche zich for years!” • Don’t ask for details on the niftar’s circumstances of passing, be it illness, accident, etc. It is wrenching for the avel to rehash the minutiae of the loss hundreds of times throughout the shivah week. And of course, do not share your opinion on which doctor/specialist should have been consulted! • A shivah house is a sad place, yes. But visitors need not come armed with their own tales of woe just to commiserate. As some of my motherin-law’s visitors tearfully recounted their own families’ brushes with death, it nearly seemed as if they were the ones sitting shivah! • In a crowded shivah house, do not affront the aveilim with the echoes of your lighthearted conversation with the friend/acquaintance you’ve met there. Wait quietly and respectfully until it is your turn to be menachem avel. • Think again and again before you speak! The amount of faux pas made in shivah houses is overwhelming. Things like, “I’m crying more than you!” should never be said. Likewise, “Why didn’t you let me know he was sick?” Rather err on the side of caution and offer quiet comfort. The most fitting nichum aveilim to my shvigger was actually made by the neighborhood UPS driver! He came up to the house and simply said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, Mrs. G. Your husband was a great man.” May all of Klal Yisroel be inscribed in the sefer chaim tovim, and may we never need to make use of these tips! C.G.

Parshas
Vayeilech By: Malka Schneps
“Good Shabbos! Please come in!” said Rabbi Fein to his Shabbos guest, Shimon Weinberg. Shimon was the CEO of a large corporation and a guest in Rabbi Fein’s shul. “Thank you so much for having me,” said Shimon. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Fein, the Fein children, and Shimon all sat down to eat the Shabbos seudah. As Rebbetzin Fein brought in the cholent, Rabbi Fein turned to speak with Shimon. “Tell me, Shimon, how did you become CEO? From what I understand, you started out as a cashier in one of your company’s stores. You must have quite a story to tell!” “Indeed I do, and it’s a story I enjoy telling!” Shimon smiled. “And I’m sure I will enjoy hearing it,” Rabbi Fein replied as he helped himself to a slice of kugel. “I started out working at the cash register, like you said. But I never saw myself as a cashier — though I didn’t see myself as a CEO yet, either, at that point. I just decided that no matter what my job was, I would give it 100 percent.” Shimon took a sip of water, and then continued. “I had two rules for myself that I kept faithfully from day one. “The first rule was that I would view each day on the job as if it were my first day. When it’s your first day, you approach your job with fresh enthusiasm. You’re eager to do a good job, you’re not burdened by thoughts
46 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
of mistakes from the past, and you try your hardest to impress the higher-ups.” “Wonderful,” said Rabbi Fein with a smile. “And what was your second rule?” “My second rule was that I would view every day on the job as if it might be my last. I never lost sight of the fact that I could be fired at any moment. By acting as if each day might be my last day, I pushed myself to the max. I never took my job or the income it provided for granted, and I never became complacent,” concluded Shimon. “Amazing, simply amazing,” exclaimed Rabbi Fein. “With your permission, I would like to mention you in my Shabbos Shuvah drasha. I think there’s a big mussar haskel in your story.” “Yes, you certainly may, and it would be a great honor,” agreed Shimon. “But may I ask how my story could inspire someone except in business?” “Well, I already prepared my shiur, and your story fits right in. I’ll give you a sneak preview right now!” said Rabbi Fein. “This week’s parsha begins, ‘Vayeilech Moshe vayedabeir es hadvarim ha’eileh el kal Yisroel…’ — And Moshe went and spoke these things to all Yisroel. He said to them, ‘I am 120 years old today…’ “Rashi cites the Gemara in Sotah 13b,” Rabbi Fein continued, “that Moshe Rabbeinu was really telling Klal Yisroel, ‘Today I was born, and today I will die.’ The sefer Birchas Shamayim explains
that Moshe Rabbeinu was giving Klal Yisroel mussar by demonstrating that a person must think to himself, every single day, that he was born on that day and he will die on that day.” “Yes, I see the connection to my idea of every day being my first and last day on the job,” agreed Shimon. “Yes, and we glean a powerful lesson from this,” continued Rabbi Fein. “You might recall that in the Gemara, Shabbos 153a, R’ Eliezer says, ‘Repent one day before your death.’ R’ Eliezer’s talmidim ask him, ‘But does a person know the day on which he will die?’ He replies to them, ‘All the more so, he should repent today, in case he dies tomorrow, so that all of his days will be in teshuvah.’” “Just like all of my days at work were spent working hard to do the best job I could, which led to my becoming CEO!” Shimon smiled. Rabbi Fein nodded. “And when a person does teshuvah, he is considered a new person, free from the mistakes of the past. And if he also sees himself as if he might die that very day, he will naturally do teshuvah and thus ‘be born’ that day. So if a person sees himself as if he will die that day — then through teshuvah, he will be born that day as well! ‘Today I was born, and today I will die.’” May we all do teshuvah today and every day, and be zoche to a gmar chasimah tovah.

After a 30-Year Hiatus, the F Express Train Is Back on Track
BDE: Torah Tapes Founder, Reb Mayer Dovid Apfelbaum
It’s been 30 long years since the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended the F train’s express route, but the faster service has finally been restored, saving riders who catch the express trains more than five minutes on their daily commute. The MTA began running the express trains on September 16, with two of the faster trains running during
A Holocaust survivor who spent decades reigniting the light of Torah throughout Brooklyn was laid to rest on Erev Rosh Hashanah in New Jersey. Born in Galicia, Reb Mayer Dovid Apfelbaum spent the wartime years in Bergen-Belsen. He came to America after the war and learned for many years in Yeshiva Torah Vodaath, reported Hamodia. Reb Mayer Dovid spent significant hours building a renowned library of taped shiurim and divrei Torah in his 18th Avenue home. The idea for the library came about as a project of Torah Vodaath bachurim to benefit a classmate, Reb Luzer Flam, who was hospitalized with multiple sclerosis at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in Crown Heights. While numerous young men would visit with Reb Luzer, there were times where no one was available to make the trip to the hospital, and a plan was launched to record shiurim on cassette tapes so that Reb Luzer could listen to them and continue in his learning. As the number of tapes made for Reb Luzer increased, others asked for copies, and that’s how the Torah Tapes library was born. Its profits used to pay for Reb Luzer’s care until his passing. Reb Mayer Dovid noted that because the project had been started l’Shem Shamayim, it merited tremendous hatzlacha over the past 50 years. “Eventually, as technology progressed, we had ‘competition’ from newer and more convenient platforms, but in spreading Torah there is no competition,” noted Reb Mayer Dovid in an interview prepared in celebration of Torah Vodaath’s 100-year anniversary. Reb Mayer Dovid ran the yeshivah’s canteen, both during its time in Williamsburg and later when it moved to its Kensington location, serving food to talmidim when the kitchen was closed. He considered Rav Moshe Rivlin to be his mentor, spending Shabbosos and yomim tovim in his home, with Rabbi Rivlin and his wife escorting him to the chuppah. Matzav reported that Reb Mayer Dovid was also well known for his efforts in shidduchim, particularly in those of older singles, having made over 120 successful matches. The levayah for Reb Mayer Dovid on Erev Rosh Hashanah began at his home and continued to the Floral Park Cemetery where he was laid to rest in the Mattersdorfer chelkah. Yehi zichro baruch.
both the morning and afternoon rush hours. The trains will be stopping at just the 7th Avenue stop between Church Avenue and Jay Street–MetroTech, skipping over the Fort Hamilton Parkway, 15th Street–Prospect Park, 4th Avenue, Smith–9th Streets, Carroll Street and Bergen Street stations. The morning rush hour express trains will be departing Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue at 7:07 and 7:29 a.m., and the afternoon trains will be leaving Lexington Avenue/63rd Street in Manhattan at 4:57 and 5:28 p.m. In a joint press release, Senator Simcha Felder and City Councilman Kalman Yeger hailed the move, calling on the MTA to restore the trains permanently. “Anyone growing up on 18th Avenue, like I did, remembers when express service on the F line was the norm,” said Felder, who noted that he had been advocating for the return of the faster trains for more than ten years. “This is a step in the right direction, and I look forward to the return of full-time F express service.” “Undoubtedly our neighborhoods need better and faster public transportation options, and I know the MTA agrees,” added Yeger. “I’m hopeful this express option expands to more hours in the future.”

CHAPTER FIVE Recap: The cuckoo clock in Elisheva’s home, which has been broken for years, begins to “cuckoo” again at random times. Elisheva’s daughter Tzippy worries about how her parents will pay for her wedding expenses and apartment. In Bratislava 1944, the war ends, but the mothers of the two Jewish boys — Gustav and Yosef Ludmir (whom Theodore had named Edo) — don’t return. Gustav disappears to search for his mother, and when he returns, receives a nasty rebuke from Farash, the orphanage director. Yerushalayim
Tzippy walked up the stairs as Sari Goodman from the third floor came down in the opposite direction, jangling the keys to her salon. “Oh, Tzippy!” She smiled broadly. “How are you?” “Baruch Hashem, great.” “Mazel tov on your new nephew and on the bris. How’s the shul’s new hall? Is it nice?” “Yes, it’s really very pretty.” “And what’s the baby’s name?” “Shmuel, after my father’s father.” “Very nice. Is your sister still staying with you?” “No. My sister’s mother-in-law gave her a gift of three days at the kimpeturin home in Telzstone, so she’s there now.” “Nice! So, you’re going from one simcha to the next, aren’t you... When’s the wedding? Do you have a date already?” “In Shevat, b’ezras Hashem.” “Wonderful!” Mrs. Goodman leaned her head forward as if she wanted to share a secret with a five-year-old, and said, “Tell your mother that it’s not smart to wait to buy the sheitels until the middle of the winter. After
Chanukah, prices are going up. I’m having a small sale now on all of my precut wigs, and if you come now you’ll get really great prices.” Tzippy nodded solemnly. “I’ll tell my mother,” she said. “And I have a few styles that are just right for you — very modest and refined. Do you want to come over this evening?” “I’ll speak to my mother, and we’ll see what our plans are for this week. Thanks.” “Our plans for this week include starting to get you outfitted and ready for the wedding, b’ezras Hashem,” a voice said from the first floor. Tzippy’s mother came up the stairs, carrying her small pocketbook. “Oh, Sari, how are you? Do you think you have anything good for Tzippy in your salon?” “Yes, I was just telling her that I’m clearing my shelves, and if you come in this evening, I think Tzippy will find some styles that she likes.” Tzippy looked at her mother. “This evening sounds great,” Elisheva said with a smile. “When is a good time for you? Eight?” “A little later is probably better, maybe

closer to ten?” “Perfect. Thanks for thinking of us, Sari.” “With pleasure. What don’t you do for such good neighbors?” They walked into the house, right into the hubbub created by three hungry cheder children. The fact that Riki had just taken out a pot of soup from the fridge and put it on the stove to warm up did little to calm them down. “I’m going to lie down for a few minutes, girls, alright?” Elisheva said, after listening to each of the kids for a minute. “Can you give the boys something to eat?” “I’ll make some orzo,” Tzippy said hurriedly, glancing worriedly at her mother. “Mommy, do you want to drink that special migraine tea?” Itzik offered generously. “Your head hurts, right?” “No, dear,” his mother replied. “My head doesn’t hurt. My legs hurt a little. One of the babies in my group is teething, and he cried and cried, and all he wanted me to do was walk around holding him, that’s all.” She stroked her son’s cheek. “But it will pass in a few minutes, b’ezras Hashem.” “So, does your head hurt, Tzippy?” Shloimy quickly passed on the illness to his sister. “No, of course not!” She laughed. “Why did you think that my head hurts?” “Because your forehead has those lines on it, like Abba gets when a migraine starts.” “No, I’ll tell you why her forehead is creased,” Itzik announced. “Because she’s thinking all kinds of things. She’s a kallah, so she’s thinking about the stuff kallahs think about. I know she’s thinking about lots of stuff, because there are lots of lines on her forehead.” “What kind of thoughts do kallahs think?” Shloimy wondered. “What she is going to name the babies she’s going to have?” “No, if anything, it’s which cheder she should send them to.” Itzik swung his legs impatiently under the table. “They should go to our cheder!”
56 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Shloimy jumped up and splattered the soup that Riki had just set down in front of him. “And they should have Rabbi Shlomowitz in first grade, because he’s the best rebbi in the world!” “Last year you also said that your rebbi was the best in the world,” murmured seventeenyear-old Riki. “So the upshot is, Tzippy, that it makes no difference which cheder you send your future children to; as long as they follow Shloimy’s path, they are guaranteed to get the best teachers and rebbeim in the world.” Behind the closed door, the voices filtered through to Elisheva, who, despite the pain in her legs, could not lie down. She sat down and opened the notebook she had taken out of her drawer, quickly scanning the few pages that were filled with names and numbers. The way it looked right now, she wouldn’t be able to write another check before the end of the month. Would Sari Goodman agree to take a check dated two and a half weeks from now? And even then, would it be okay to divide the bill into at least three payments? She closed the notebook and sat in silence for a few more seconds. She breathed deeply and let the cheerful banter from the kitchen envelop her. She would try to feel Sari out, and in the worst case, she’d tell her they’d just come to look for now. And maybe a miracle would happen and someone would suddenly come and buy an entire case of her anti-migraine tea, and she’d have a thousand shekels in cash. The wig stylist would surely agree to take that as a deposit. THEY SAT DOWN on the little sofa in the small but elegant room. “I’m sorry about the delay,” Sari said. She hadn’t finished with the previous customer yet. It was another kallah who had come with her mother, and now the girl was trying on snoods and berets, one after the other. “That’s how it is around here. I want to give each of my customers as much time and attention as she needs, and it’s

hard to always be tied to the clock. Do you want a drink in the meantime?” “We’re fine,” Elisheva said. “When do we have time to just sit in the evening with our feet up, right, Tzippy? Don’t worry about it at all, Sari; we’re very comfortable.” Tzippy laughed. She did feel very comfortable, baruch Hashem. She’d watched in consternation earlier in the afternoon as her mother had disappeared into her room. As much as she was being asked to relax, she knew that their financial situation had never been rosy, and things had only gotten tighter recently… But her mother had emerged from her room after a few minutes acting like her normal self, so Tzippy had reassured herself that there was probably no reason to worry. “You can look at those in the meantime,” Sari suggested, pointing to some shelves. “Try to get a feel of the styles and see if you like any of them. What was that?” She turned back to the other customer. “Bronze? No, I don’t have that snood in bronze. Isn’t silver good?” After a few more questions and deliberations, the mother and daughter departed with their purchases. Sari locked the door behind them. “The truth is, I could barely contain myself.” She turned to Elisheva and Tzippy with a smile. “But I didn’t want them to hear. We had a very funny phone call this afternoon. Someone wanted information about you.” “About us?” Elisheva dropped the snood she had picked up from the basket and tried to imagine Tzippy wearing it. “About who? Riki? She’s only seventeen. It’s not

for me...” “And how old is your son?” Sari asked, as she took a broom from the corner of the room. “He’s older than her, isn’t he?” “He’s eighteen. He might think he’s old enough to get married, but I’m telling you, there’s nothing to talk about right now.” “Right, so my husband was quite surprised, because he didn’t remember that you had anyone in line after Tzippy. Look at this one, Tzippy.” “Nu?” Elisheva asked. “But then the guy — he introduced himself as Rosenblatt or Rosenblitt, or something like that — started asking my husband if your daughter who is engaged is named Tziporah, and if she has another name, and if the chasan’s name is really Peretz.” “What?” “Strange, isn’t it?” Sari’s smile was a bit sheepish. “My husband came to ask me. He remembered the name Peretz, but he wasn’t sure about the kallah’s name, if it’s Tziporah or not, and he certainly had no clue whether or not she has a middle name. But I remembered the Genendel, because of the story of that shidduch that I tried to redt with Green... Anyway, I was upset at myself for just giving information over the phone to a stranger, but… well, a name is something that anyone can easily find out, right?” She tried to sound confident, but her tone was just the opposite. “Right,” Elishava affirmed. A moment later, she raised her eyes to Sari. “Tachlis, what did he want?” “I don’t know,” Sari said. “At that point, we realized that he wasn’t asking about shidduchim, because he knew your daughter was already engaged. But some-

thing about this shidduch, especially the names of the chasan and kallah, seemed to interest him a lot. Oh, he also asked us when the wedding will take place, but by then I had already caught myself, and I told my husband to tell him that if he wanted more details, he should ask you himself.” Tzippy and Elisheva looked at her. “He said it’s a good idea, and that is just what he will do.” Bratislava 5708/1948
The two children sat on the cold floor of the corridor, observing the staff running to and fro. “They’re taking off the pictures,” the younger one noted curiously. “They’re pictures that the new soldiers don’t like,” the older child, all of eight years old, explained. “The soldiers who don’t let us pray?” “Yes.” They both watched the other children in the orphanage flitting from one place to the other. All the children had freshly washed faces and were jittery with excitement as the teachers kept ordering them to move from here to there and then back again. “I’m clean already,” the little one said. “And so are you.” Suddenly they heard a piercing whistle, and then dozens of feet began stampeding toward the stairs, in the direction of the dining room. The two children stood up and joined the stream. “I don’t like his whistle,” Edo said. “Neither do I. No one likes it.” They joined the rows of children lined up against the wall of the dining room, looking straight ahead. “Is there someone,” the director began, “who doesn’t like this place?” His question was met with silence. “Because the soldiers are going to come see how things are managed here. And if you want to stay here and not be thrown out to the street, you have to say two things...” He grimaced, and although he tried to conceal it, there wasn’t a single child who missed the expression. “First: what is the most important thing in

the world?” “The Party,” all of the children replied obediently. “It’s not loud enough, not convincing. What’s the most important thing in the world?” “The Party!” they all shouted together. “Good. And who takes the best care of us in the whole world?” “Comrade Stalin!” The director nodded. “And the second thing you have to tell the soldiers is that you love this place. Here, you are growing up to be a vital part of the workers of the nation, and you don’t want the orphanage to be closed down. Is that clear?” “It’s clear,” the children echoed. “Maybe we should give them an example. Gustav… where is Gustav?” The child standing at the edge of the row, peeling a piece off the already-peeling wall, stepped forward. A small hand stuck itself into his, and Edo appeared with him at the front of the dining room. “Tell me a minute, Gustav,” the director said, his smile even more fiendish than his ubiquitous scowl. “If the soldiers ask you if you like this place, what will you tell them?” The boy only nodded. “Very good. So why did you once try to run away?” The boy looked around and saw a sea of faces gazing at him. He did not reply. “Oh, he just wanted to look for his family.” It was Theodore, sitting on a chair at the side and watching the assembly, who answered. “But he already realized it’s not so simple. I’ve told you, Gustav, that your family was sent to the East during the war, and will probably never come back. But listen,” he continued with a laugh, “the soldiers coming here today are also from the East, from the glorious Soviet Union. You can ask them if they saw your mother on their way.” The director guffawed loudly. So did the other teachers. But Gustav actually took the joke seriously. To be continued...

Talk of Impeachment Grips Washington BACKGROUND: On Wednesday, September 18, The Washington Post broke a story of an alleged whistleblower complaint against President Donald Trump. The complaint centered around a phone call that the president held with a foreign leader. On September 20 the Post identified that leader as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski. It explained that the problematic nature of the call was related to pressure exerted by Trump on the Ukrainian leader to investigate the Ukrainian dealings of Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The New York Times followed by reporting that Trump
64 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
instructed Zelenski to work with his lawyer Rudy Giuliani on the matter. The Wall Street Journal claimed that Trump raised the issue with Zelenski “about eight times. On September 24, the House of Representatives began a formal impeachment inquiry. This article will attempt to explain and highlight the key issues and players involved in this controversy. DONALD TRUMP: President of the United States.
Elected in a surprise victory in the 2016 election. As a Washington outsider he has challenged the accepted political norms of government. He presides over a sharply divided electorate. He retains strong support from his Republican base, but is subject to vehement criticism from many of his opponents.
JOE BIDEN: Former Vice President of the United States during the Obama administration. Currently he is a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. He represents the centrist elements of the Democratic Party. He led in early polling but is currently facing a strong challenge from a surging Elizabeth Warren. HUNTER BIDEN: Son of Joe
Biden. A lawyer by profession. He sat on the board of Burisma Holdings from 2014 to 2019. VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY: For-
mer comedian turned politician, who was elected president of the Ukraine in April 2019. He defeated the incumbent president Petro Poroshenko by winning nearly 73 percent of the popular vote. He is the first Jewish president of the Ukraine. BURISMA HOLDINGS: a large
privately held Ukrainian gas group that was owned by Mykola Zlochevsky, a former Ukranian Minister of Ecology. In 2014, the then–vice president’s son Hunter Biden joined the board of Burisma Holdings. At around the same time, Zlochevsky came under investigation for corrupt business dealings. VICTOR SHONKIN: In 2015,
Shonkin was appointed Prosecutor General of Ukraine. He was tasked with investigating Burisma Holdings, Shonkin himself was accused of being inept and corrupt. The European Union (EU), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United States government all demanded his ouster. In December 2018, Vice President Biden told Ukrainian leaders to fire Shonkin or lose $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees. Biden would later boast that his
threats were successful in getting Shonkin removed from his post. In March 2016, the Ukranian parliament voted to remove Shonkin from his position. Yuri Lutsenko replaced him as Prosecutor General. In January 2017, the probes of Burisma Holdings were formally closed. THE CLAIM OF MISCONDUCT: In March 2018, Con-
servative investigative journalist Peter Schweizer published a book that alleged corruption by Hunter Biden during his time in Ukraine. In a May 2019 interview with FOX News, President Trump claimed that Biden had pressured the Ukrainian government to fire Shonkin to protect his son Hunter. This claim or variants thereof have been repeated in many conservative news outlets. Shonkin himself has reinforced these claims by claiming that his investigation of Burisma (and Hunter Biden) was the only reason for his firing. However, both American and Ukranian officials have stated that the Burisma probe was inactive at the time of Shonkin’s firing. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the Burisma investigation focused on the actions of Hunter Biden. THE PHONE CALL: In July 2019, President Trump held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky. In this phone call, he asked Zelensky to help investigate the actions of the Bidens. During the phone call Trump instructed Zelensky to be in touch with Attorney General William Barr and Rudy Giuliani. This is highly unusual, as the normal address for a foreign government is the State Department — and not the Attorney General’s office or the president’s personal lawyer. According to some me-
dia reports of the whistleblower complaint, the phone call also included an inappropriate “promise” made by President Trump. However, the details of the phone call released to date do not show evidence of any promise being made. THE WHISTLEBLOWER: The anonymous whistleblower is a member of the U.S. intelligence community. The whistleblower was concerned that President Trump was improperly using the power of his office and the force of the U.S. government to pressure Ukrainian officials into providing him with dirt on his political opponent Joe Biden. On August 12, he followed procedure and filed a complaint with the Intelligence Community Inspector General. MICHAEL ATKINSON: Atkin-
son is the Intelligence Community Inspector General. Upon receiving the report, he was tasked with investigating whether the concerns in the complaint were credible and a matter of urgent concern. Atkinson determined that the issue was of urgent concern, thereby triggering a legally required disclosure to Congress. JOSEPH MAGUIRE: Maguire
is the acting Director of National Intelligence. He assumed this position after the resignation of Dan Coates. Maguire refused to hand over the complaint to Congress, citing confidential and potentially privileged information. On September 13, 2019, House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff subpoenaed Maguire to force him to disclose the contents of the complaint. On September 24, the Republican-controlled Senate passed a non-binding 100-0 resolution calling on the administra-

tion to release the report. The next day, the administration released a limited transcript of the president’s phone call with Zelensky and eventually released the whistleblower complaint to Congress. RUDY GIULIANI: The former mayor of
New York is at the heart of the Ukraine controversy. He has held many meetings with various Ukrainian officials, and the nature of many of those meetings remains unknown. Giuliani had also created controversy with his comments during many media appearances. UKRAINIAN AID: On September 24,
President Trump confirmed that he had instructed the State Department to withhold aid from Ukraine prior to his phone call with Zelensky. The reason for this decision remains unclear. This has led to speculation that it was intended as a form of pressure to get Zelensky to conform with the president’s demands. NANCY PELOSI: The Speaker of the
House had launched a formal impeachment inquiry. She has instructed six House committees to investigate whether the impeachment of the president is warranted. To date, 225 members of the House of Representatives are on record supporting the impeachment of the president. WHY IT MATTERS: Even if the House approves articles of impeachment, it is unlikely that the Republican-controlled Senate will vote to remove the president from office. However, in today’s political environment, everything is fluid, and it is impossible to know with certainty how things will play out. The more likely impact is that the impeachment proceedings will crowd out all other political news for the foreseeable future. This, in terms of the electorate, will likely prove damaging for both Joe Biden and President Trump.

PEANUT CHEW SURPRISE LOGS CHOCOLATE CASING 1 lb. good-quality chocolate 1 jar peanut butter 5½ cups rice crispies
PEANUT BUTTER FILLING 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup corn syrup 1 cup salted peanuts, crushed
DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare filling: Place peanut butter, sugar and corn syrup into a small pot and cook on low flame, stirring until all ingredients are melted. Set aside. 2. In a double boiler, melt chocolate and peanut butter. Add rice crispies and mix. Fill silicone molds a third way full with rice crispies mixture, brushing upward with back of a spoon to create indentation for filling. 3. Place filling into a piping bag and squeeze some into the center of the molds. (Set aside some filling for the topping.) Sprinkle some chopped peanuts on top of the filling. Top with some more rice crispies mix. Freeze until firm. Once firm remove from molds. 4. To decorate the logs, pipe reserved filling on top, rewarming the filling in a bag with hot water. Top with some peanuts and a drizzle of chocolate. Tip: For a super-smooth exterior, coat silicone molds by brushing with some baking chocolate before the first step. Variation: You can also make two large logs with this recipe, using the listed amounts for the chocolate mixture, and one and a half times the ingredient amounts listed for the filling.

Erev Yom Kippur is always an intense day, but this year the intensity was at its peak. I had many raw emotions to contend with. With the sudden petirah of my vibrant father just weeks prior, I’d been promoted to the ranks of Yizkor-goers and had to make arrangements for this new reality.
I very much longed to say that first Yizkor in the shul where my father had most often davened, where the presence of my siblings would provide some measure of support. I was not yet ready to face this experience on my own. On Erev Yom Kippur, I tried each of my siblings, but no one knew at what time Yizkor would be said, and so I found myself crying at the lecht, the first time I was going into Yom Kippur without my father’s heartfelt brachos, with no definite plans for Yizkor. After Maariv, my husband inquired about the time for Yizkor and was told that if I’d be in shul by 12:30, I would definitely arrive on time.

With that timing in mind, I arranged for a neighbor to care for my young ones, packed a machzor and a stash of tissues, and started the trek to shul, where multitudes of chassidim from around the world joined their Rebbe over the Yomim Noraim. As I neared the shul, I was met by a sea of white kittels and tichel-bedecked women rushing home to catch some rest in the short intermission between Shacharis and Mussaf. I had missed Yizkor. I had missed the opportunity to commemorate my father’s neshamah surrounded by close family, and perhaps even the chance to catch a minyan at all. Instinctively, I continued to my mother’s home, engulfed in a deep, searing pain. When I reached the edge of the familiar property and saw my mother and sisters solemnly walking up to the door, my emotions reached a crescendo and the dam broke. I stood outside, vulnerable and exposed, crying unchecked tears, both for the sudden, untimely loss of my father and for the lost opportunity to commemorate him. It felt like a terrible blow. After the difficult weeks I’d just endured, was I not even deserving of the small measure of comfort reciting Yizkor for my father would

give me? Suddenly, my brother appeared from inside the house. “Come, come!” he called, motioning with his hand. He had sized up the situation and was determined to help me find a minyan. At Rav Stein’s* shul a few blocks away, he said, they might still be before Yizkor. I followed him wordlessly, joined by a sister who was accompanying me simply so I shouldn’t have to be alone. We sure made a strange sight: two grown women with tear-streaked faces, struggling to keep pace with a rushing man, his tallis flying. My sister and I followed him wordlessly, mindlessly, for a long distance. We passed quite a few shtieblach, and then finally arrived at Rav Stein’s. I wanted to go in to inquire whether they had already said Yizkor, but my brother looked at his watch and said, “Let’s not waste time. They are probably deep into Mussaf already.” We continued until we neared the newly built shul of Kehillas Yisroel*. Two mispallelim outside confirmed that they hadn't recited Yizkor yet. My brother pointed to the women’s section, and my sister and I trekked up the steep staircase, exhausted and breathless.

Before we even opened the door, we heard the chazzan’s rendition of Avinu Malkeinu. He was reciting each word slowly, in a beautiful, hallowed melody. In our kehillah it is customary for each mispallel to recite Avinu Malkeinu quietly, only following the chazzan for five specific lines. It was truly heartwarming to arrive at such a poignant moment, one we had never experienced before. Silent gestures and motions to take a seat welcomed us. We were also met with some questioning gazes from acquaintances who surely wondered what had led us to this particular minyan, which we were obviously not associated with. While waiting for Yizkor, we were zoche to follow along with krias haTorah as the baal korei enunciated each word slowly, with intense kavanah, in a touching, solemn tune. We reveled in the opportunity to hear every word of the Torah-reading on this auspicious day and fervently answered amen, whispering kapitlach of Tehillim whenever we had the chance. Finally, a solemn, still aura surrounded us as the shul emptied out and Yizkor began. I whispered the unfamiliar words, doing the precious little I still could for my dear father. The experience was haunting, yet I found peace and comfort knowing that this incident was surely no coincidence. I was certain that the day’s events, all of the pain and disappointment, was orchestrated by Hashem’s hand, which had guided me directly to this shul as a zechus for my father’s neshamah. And it truly was remarkable that we’d ended up precisely in that particular shul. Years earlier, my father had been mekarev the father of the present Rav of that shul, a devout and pious oved Hashem who had arrived in America as a downtrodden immigrant. He had tried to build a kehillah from the ground up in the basement of his home, and my father, with his signature warmth, had given him chizuk. And even though he was far from a man of means, my father helped him finan-
cially, and physically as well. Once the Rav moved back to Eretz Yisroel, my father continued this relationship with his son, the present Rav. How fitting it was that my father be remembered in the place where he’d done so much chesed! We retraced our footsteps to my mother’s house, where we shared what had occurred over the last few hours. “You said Yizkor in Kehillas Yisroel?” my mother asked incredulously. “And followed along the entire krias haTorah?” Her voice was laced with emotion. “Are you aware that Tatty’s sefer Torah is currently being used in that shul?” We could not believe how this saga was becoming more and more remarkable — and meaningful. Some fifteen years earlier, my father had written a sefer Torah in honor of his late father, and whenever the need arose, he’d generously loan it
Finally, a solemn, still aura surrounded us as the shul emptied out and Yizkor began. to shuls requiring a second sefer Torah. Just a few weeks earlier, right after my father’s passing, one of the gabbaim of Kehillas Yisroel had asked my mother if they could borrow the sefer Torah for their newly constructed shul until they’d manage to get hold of a second sefer Torah. Since my father had been heavily invested in the shul, my mother readily agreed. It didn’t take long for us to confirm with the gabbai that the krias haTorah, which we had heard and answered amen to, was indeed leined in my father’s sefer Torah. What had seemed, in the moment, to be the biggest blow turned out to be the most caressing, comforting stroke from Above. L’ilui nishmasר' משה בן ר' דוד

When I was ten or eleven years old, new neighbors moved to our block. I overheard adults talking about them, saying that both parents were Holocaust survivors. This, in itself, was not unusual in the 1950s, when every newcomer was greeted with the same two questions: “Shalom Aleichem. Where are you from, and where were you during the war?” One yom tov day, I went to play at my new friend’s house, and I saw a sight that bewildered me. It was a day on which Yizkor was recited, and the kitchen table had two trays full of lit yahrtzeit candles. When I asked my friend to explain, she answered by reciting a little ditty — if it could be called that — she had composed. While pointing at the candles, she chanted: “Father’s father, father’s mother, mother’s father, mother’s mother.” And then, waving her hand over the rest of the candles, she continued, “Father’s and mother’s sisters and brothers.” I was completely taken aback. Though I had heard a little about the war, it was the first time in my young life that I faced from up close the reality of what people had actually lost. This was before the era of bookshelves full of Holocaust memoirs. The wounds were still fresh, and most survivors used whatever energy they had left to try to rebuild their lives. They hardly spoke about their experiences. Of course, this was not typical behavior of people preparing to say Yizkor for their departed relatives. Most who light candles for Yizkor only light for their parents — and there are those who don’t light Yizkor candles at all. What is Yizkor? It is a prayer in which we ask Hashem to remember and elevate the neshamos of relatives who have already passed on, especially parents. The main component of Yizkor is not the words of the prayer as much as the pledge of each person to give tzedakah in the merit of their father and mother. We who are here on earth can still perform good deeds, which they cannot do, and we beseech Hashem to count our deeds as a merit for the neshamos of those we are remembering. Though the main focus of Yizkor is one’s parents — and anyone whose parents are still alive goes out of shul when Yizkor is recited — there is a tefillah that one can say in memory of other departed relatives.
86 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
The Yizkor tefillah that we say on Yom Kippur is even more significant than that of the other three yomim tovim, because whereas on the other yomim tovim we just ask Hashem to elevate the neshamos of the niftarim, on Yom Kippur even the departed are being judged, so we approach the prayer of Yizkor with even more solemnity. There’s an interesting phenomenon about the prayer of Yizkor. It does not require a minyan, unlike prayers like Kaddish. Everyone says Yizkor on his own, without a chazzan leading. Yet Yizkor is the prayer that draws even the most unaffiliated Jews, who would otherwise never enter a shul, to join the other congregants. There was
The best way to describe my emotions during Yizkor is that they were of intense longing. a woman who used to come to our shul for Yizkor. Unfortunately, she had no religious education, and she did not know how to daven. Once, on yom tov, my mother, a”h, had to shush my sister and her friend who began giggling when they noticed that the woman was holding her siddur upside down. She knew nothing about Yiddishkeit, yet she felt that coming to shul for Yizkor was something she could do for her dear departed parents. During my childhood and young adulthood, I was among the fortunate who went out of shul when Yizkor was recited. When my father, z”l, was niftar, I felt that I had entered a new realm. The best way to describe my emotions during Yizkor is that they were of intense longing, wishing that the departed one would still be with us and that we would then be able to honor him more and physically attend to his needs. I once heard a poignant story from the daughter of Reb Yossel Friedensohn, a”h. Reb Yossel was a Polish Jew who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis, yemach shemam. After the war, Reb Yossel, who was a prolific writer, used his talents to describe the Poland that was lost, as well as the atrocities that Jewry as a whole had suffered. In his old age, he once spent a yom tov at his daughter’s home in Monsey, and he went to daven in the shul frequented by his sonin-law, a minyan composed mostly of young people. When it came time to say Yizkor, most of the congregants went out. His son-inlaw, seeing this, tried to apologize for the fact that there wasn’t a minyan is shul for Yizkor, but Reb Yossel wouldn’t hear of it. “Apologize?” he said. “When I was in the DP camp after the war, I davened with a few hundred people. And when it came to Yizkor, not a single person left the room! Each and every person there had at least someone for whom to say Yizkor. Thank Hashem that you have parents and that you can daven for their continued well-being!” In Ani Ma’amin, we say every day that we believe that Hashem will resurrect all of the deceased generations when He deems the time right. May we merit to see techiyas hameisim speedily in our days, with the coming of Moshiach. Amen.

Have you ever had a defining moment in life? One in which your relationship with reality shifted, granting you a new, broader point of view? I’ve had many, but one stands out most, because it was at that moment that my entire relationship with Yiddishkeit changed… If weeks were defined by peanut butter sandwiches and salty tears, I’d be able to make lunch for half of Boro Park and fill a swimming pool with my pain. You see, I began my journey to Yiddishkeit and the life I now lead, full of self-righteousness and high hopes for the future. I was a young teenager, and moving to the frumopolis of New York, I thought, would open all doors. I’d prove myself with my knowledge, my wisdom, my piety! Mothers would beg me to marry their sons, I would teach Torah to others just beginning their journeys, and I would eventually settle into some far-off community as the rebbetzin whom everyone would look up to… And then reality set in. Not only was I neither wise nor pious, I was also not destined to become the rebbetzin of a community, or even my own street. And those mothers? Not happening. In fact, the only shidduch I was offered at that time promptly declined when they heard my history. I was lucky, though, because at least a frum employer decided to give me a chance to prove myself. And though some of my naive expectations and attempts at fitting in caused my coworkers to giggle, work was a wonderful environment in which I became close to several amazing women who opened the door to the chassidishe world just wide enough for me to take a peek. I was blown away by the simple beauty of this new world. It was not only the physical beauty of white, crisp

tichlach and regal shtreimlach, but a spiritual beauty as well. It was as if Hashem was right there, being grasped by the outstretched arms of the hosts I watched singing hartzige zemiros on Shabbos. It was the ruchniyus of the weekly Shabbos menu, with each course passed down as a minhag of generations, that spoke to me. It was the delicate refinement of the double-covered women I met that made me want to emulate them. It was the cheery-eyed toddlers who were clearly the light of their parents’ lives and the shockingly mature, respectful teens who loved to spend time with, gulp, family, that charmed me. It was the utter otherness of the community, a peek into a world largely untouched by the secular influences of my youth that drew me in, begging me to ask “why?” Why do these wonderful people live like this? Why are they so different? Why do they have what I want, and what can I do to get it? At that point, I was a single girl, sharing a basement with another single girl, struggling to physically survive, living mostly off hope and inspiration. My trial job paid just enough to cover the rent and afforded me one bag of bread and a jar of peanut butter for the week. (Jelly, too, if I was lucky.) Truth is, there were times I earned a bit more, but that was immediately spent on seforim to broaden my knowledge of what it means to be a Yid. At

least my soul was eating. Over time I proved my work capabilities and earned a full-time position, which raised my standard of living to more normative levels. But even when I was busy and surrounded by people, there was loneliness. Everyone had someone who really cared for them, except me. I was so, so alone. Painfully so. I wanted nothing more in the world than a loving family, as I’d never really been blessed with one, even prior to my frum days. And I wanted not just the family I would build with a husband (preferably frum from birth, to fill in the gaps of knowledge I’d always have, to some extent), but I wanted to go back in time, as well, and have a doting mother and father — chassidish, of course. Young girl. Big imagination, aye? But it actually happened, because nothing is beyond the power of tefillah and Hashem’s unlimited capabilities and chesed. I learned this one night, when I returned home from a very moving evening spent listening to shiurim in which the common thread was how a heartfelt prayer can change our lives. I felt as if every speaker had prepared their messages specifically for me. It was exactly what I needed to hear. With a broken heart, I took my Tehillim in hand and poured out my pain. Pages became soaked as a I pleaded with Hashem to change my destiny from that of a destitute, hopeless, futureless girl to one in which I’d blend seamlessly into the chassidishe community — with my frum-from-birth husband and children, of course. “And Tatty,” I said, “nothing is beyond You. You are the Creator of the heavens and stars, the sea and the land, and the animals that roam it. You have created the human and the destiny of man — and nothing is beyond You. So please, Tatty, go beyond the confines of the nature You have created and maintain, and grant me, please, please!, a chassidishe family to teach me what it means to actually be chassidish.” To this day, I have never davened with as much emotion as I davened that night. I woke up the next morning and went to work as usual, but something had changed, and I felt it. I knew open and revealed goodness was on the way. Through a series of events, I ended up finding my “family.” I went from being a girl in a dark hole of a basement to becoming an honorary member of a chashuve family. My new father figure was a dayan, and his widely respected rebbetzin, my female role model. She welcomed me in as if I were their own long-lost child, showering me with attention, gifts, notes of

ing on his tears, the dayan cried out in his gentle, moving voice, “Tatty, bless this child who is without a father, without a mother, for whom we are standing in.” His prayer continued in this vein, invoking Heavenly mercy upon me, begging Hashem to open the floodgates of goodness and shower it down upon me. I, too, began to cry. Here was a simple act performed by an extraordinary man who transformed it into a vessel of deep connection and caring. It was a mitzvah b’shleimus, encompassing feeling, speech and action. I realized then that Yiddishkeit is not a bridge between emotion and mitzvos, two disparate things, because, on the contrary, Yiddishkeit is emotion. Yiddishkeit is feeling the joys and sorrows of other human beings. It is about putting your heart into your action, feeling, lifting your spirit ever higher in the ecstasy of deveikus. It’s about not becoming stuck in the mundane, to do mitzvos by rote. It’s about finetuning the instrument of emotion to focus on problems beyond our own daled amos, to truly care for other human beings. Only a few weeks after the dayan bentched me, I had my own personal Yom Kippur. I was a radiant kallah, seated upon a white throne, waiting for my (frum-from-birth!) chasan to cover my head and face at the badeken. As he approached, flanked by the dayan on one side and my chasan’s grandfather (who stood in place of his deceased father) on the other, I knew my prayers had been accepted. And when Zaidy, a”h, a survivor of Auschwitz who retained his faith — as well as a Yid who pushed through years of losing his job every Shabbos when he came to America, and who completed Sefer Tehillim every day until his last breath — placed his hands above my dek tichel as the dayan had done, I knew I was more than doubly blessed. For though I was a girl without a father, my Tatty had truly bentched me. I am blessed.

encouragement and her precious time. Four of their children, three of them girls, were still at home, unmarried, when I moved in. With their charming help, I developed not only a deeper understanding of the chassidishe world, but the ability to see the spunk of it. I wasn’t the type to smile easily, but through them, I learned that it’s okay to laugh and smile and crack a good joke. More than okay, in fact. Life is to be lived! For me, this was eye-opening. In my upbringing, emotion was largely an expression of self-centeredness. Such as, I don’t like this situation, so I am going to pout/be angry/become furious/take revenge. And jokes? They were usually sarcastic remarks about other people. Everything I’d been exposed to before becoming frum had almost always been about the “I” and rarely about another. Suffice it to say that when I became frum I distanced myself from emotion, believing that the lack of it was the correct path. I viewed Yiddishkeit as actions; this is what halacha says, so this is what we do. Tefillah, of course, was an outlet of emotion between myself and the Bashefer, because I knew that tefillah is the avodah sheb’lev. But other mitzvos? Those were just actions… Like bentching the children Erev Yom Kippur. When you are new to the heimishe community and read a note in a siddur or a halacha sefer that a father blesses his children, and you have yet to have your own children, you really don’t know how much emotion is in this seemingly simple act. That’s why my life changed when the dayan, who I’d come to know as a tzaddik gamur, approached me Erev Yom Kippur. “I’m covering your head with this tichel,” the rebbetzin told me. “My husband wants to bless you.” With his hands perched in the air above my head — close, but not touching — the dayan mumbled the ancient words with which we bless our children, blessing me to be like Sarah, Rivkah, Rochel and Leah, our holy imahos. And then he began to sob. In between bouts of chok-

AN HEIRLOOM KINDEL RECIPE Making kindel is not only an art — it is a labor of love. The process is time-consuming, but so worth the beautiful rolls, rich in tradition and flavor, that result. The days of Tishrei are saturated with simanim and minhagim. While we don’t always know the reason behind each minhag and how they came about, minhagim are the colorful threads woven into the beautiful tapestry of Yiddishkeit. These traditions have deep significance, and preparing them at home will inspire the next generation to uphold the family’s minhagim. And if it is not possible to prepare these foods in your home, minhagim can be upheld with store-bought varieties. Growing up, my mother would serve this symbolic nutfilled delicacy each Hoshana Rabbah and Purim, and in my home, too, making this delicious pastry is an important part of yom tov preparation. (There are those who serve it on Shemini Atzeres or Simchas Torah, and not on Hoshana Rabbah.) While you roll out the dough, weigh and measure the nuts, and lovingly prepare the kindel, it is an auspicious time to be mispallel for ehrliche kinder. In the sefer V’hayisem Li Segulah it is brought down from Minhagei Hakehillos that in the city of Mattersdorf there was an old minhag to go out of the shul on Shemini Atzeres and throw nuts. The reason for this custom was that from Rosh Hashanah, nuts were not consumed — since egoz and chet have the same gematria — but since the Yidden had done teshuvah mei’ahavah, the chataim had been converted to zechiyos. Stemming from this is the Hungarian minhag to bake pastries with nuts. Reb Itzikel Pshevorsker said that on Shemini Atzeres after the culmination of the tefillos for the new year, Hashem takes all of our tefillos from Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkos, “uhn Ehr vikelt ess ein” — He wraps it up. And that is why they had a minhag of eating kindel, wrapped — “gevikelte” — pastries. This heirloom recipe, shared with me by Mrs. Heidi (Henchy) Deutsch, a”h, includes three different glazes, which are spread over the dough at different points of the process. Making kindel is best done if you have the option of enlisting the help of an extra pair of hands, especially for the rolling.

SUPPLIES Kitchen scale Knife Parchment paper Pastry brush 2 cookie sheets
INGREDIENTS DOUGH
FILLING
7 cups flour
1 whole lemon
3 eggs
2½ lb. (40 oz.) ground nuts Use any combination of nuts. I use a combination of ground filberts, almonds and walnuts, and put the least walnuts.
7 egg yolks Reserve egg whites for honey wash. 1 cup oil ¼ cup light-colored, sweet wine Any sweet wine works, but I use light wine so it doesn’t darken the dough.
2½ cups organic sugar 2 T. vanilla sugar Craisins
HONEY WASH
¾ cup water ½ oz. fresh yeast Can be replaced with a flat ¾ tablespoon dry yeast, but it must be very fresh.
½ cup egg whites ½ cup honey ½ cup oil
⅓ tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 2 T. honey
EGG WASH Egg yolks
3 heaping T. sugar But not Mt. Everest! Juice of one plump lemon

GLAZE ⅓ cup honey
¼ cup water
DIRECTIONS
1.
Advance preparation (needed for filling): Peel or scrape off very outer edge of lemon rind (since rind is questionable in regard to kashrus) using a fine peeler or paring knife. Cut into eighths. Remove pits and any hard skin edges. Place in freezer until partially frozen.
2.
Prepare dough: Combine all dough ingredients in a mixing bowl, and mix well. If the dough feels too soft to work with, add 3 tablespoons flour and/or place in refrigerator until it becomes more workable.
3.
4.
Prepare filling: Place partially frozen lemon pieces into food processor and process with the S blade until fine consistency is achieved. Add 1 cup of nuts to the lemon and mix by hand, crumbling to get all the lumps out. Then add the rest of the ingredients, except for the craisins, and mix with the S blade.
Prepare honey wash: Mix egg whites, honey and oil and prepare in a jar with pastry brush.
5.
Divide in five: Using a kitchen scale, divide both the dough and the filling into five uniform parts. Lightly cover the pieces of dough (with a dish towel or parchment paper) so they won’t dry out until you work with them.
7.
Smear a generous amount of honey wash onto the dough, but don’t flood it.
6.
Sprinkle some flour onto working surface. Working with one dough at a time, roll thinly, but not too thinly, into a rectangle. The length should be approximately the length of a cookie sheet. Don’t worry if the dough isn’t perfectly shaped or stretches while working; the roll can be pushed into shape when it gets transferred to the cookie sheet.
October 3, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 99 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
8.
Distribute one part of nut filling evenly over surface.
9.
10.
Neatly roll up the dough, and place roll onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. You can put three rolls onto one cookie sheet and two on the other. Flatten the rolls with your hands a bit.
12.
11.
Prepare egg wash: Once all five rolls are done, whisk egg yolks with a fork. Smear with pastry brush on top of rolls.
Slice rolls: Prepare some flour on a piece of parchment paper. Dip knife into flour and slice, patiently and slowly, on a diagonal about two-thirds way through, while keeping the roll in place with your other hand. Keep coating the knife as needed.
13.
In an oven preheated at 350°, bake kindel rolls for fifteen minutes. Remove from oven.
100 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 3, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Scatter a handful of craisins (about 40 per roll) over nut filling.
For an extra artistic touch, distribute filling only until 2 inches from the end. Cut empty area into strips, and twist each two strands together. Then flip strands over roll to form crowns. Secure strands under roll.
14.
Prepare glaze: Mix honey and water well. Brush over rolls generously to give the rolls both a beautiful lacquered look and a sweet taste.
15.
Reduce heat to 325°, and bake until well done, approximately 25 minutes.
Another variation: You can achieve this look by making small horizontal cuts in the rolls instead of slicing it, or use your creativity to come up with another look you like.

While we keep a simple, clean look on the s’chach, we still want a wower. Grapes strung all along the sukkah’s border as well as a low-hanging grape chandelier help achieve the perfect effect. Origins The Candle and the Soul “Ner Elokim nishmas adam” — Man’s neshamah is the light of Hashem (Mishlei 20:27).
The custom of lighting neshamah lecht can be traced as far back as the time of the Mishnah. The Gemara states that Havdalah should not be made over these flames because they serve to honor those who are no longer among the living. Thus, we can infer that people used to light candles for the deceased.
The wick can be compared to the body of man and the flame to his soul. Lighting a candle represents the human connection with kedushah. Through Torah and mitzvos, the Yid illuminates his body and soul.
Before his passing, Rebbe Yehudah Hanasi, the compiler of the Gemara, instructed his sons to keep the candle that burned in his lifetime burning in its place.
As a symbol of the Yiddishe neshamah, the candle is an appropriate memorial for a niftar or nifteres. We thus light a candle on a yahrtzeit and during the first year following a petirah.
The flame serves to refill with light the dark void that is left behind when a neshamah passes on.
On every yom tov when Yizkor is recited, we light a candle, too.
Reasons to Light for a Niftar
It is also a source of kaparah for the neshamah. The neshamah, the epitome of spiritual light, rejoices in physical candlelight ignited in its memory, as it says, “Ohr tzaddikim yismach” — The light of the righteous will rejoice (Mishlei 13:9).
Candle Type According to Kabbalah, it may be preferable to use an oil lamp.
Many have the minhag to light a candle made of sha’avah (beeswax) because it can be an acronym for “Hakitzu v’ranenu shochnei afar” (Yeshaya 26:19), which references techiyas hameisim.

Four Reasons for Lecht on Yom Kippur IN HONOR OF YOM TOV We light candles to fulfill the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros, just like we do every Shabbos and yom tov. Unlike the other candles lit especially for Yom Kippur, these candles need not burn throughout the entire day.
In the Courts of Tzaddikim As a child in the shul of the Ahavas Yisroel of Viznitz, zy”a, an elderly man reminisced how much he and the other boys used to love watching the shammas light the three-foot-long candle in shul. A gentile fireman, fully dressed in his firefighter’s uniform, stood by all day long to guard the fire from spreading.
IN SHUL We cannot honor Yom Kippur with a seudah, like we do every other yom tov. Instead, we honor yom tov with lighting extra candles. Years back, a candle was lit for every person, young and old. Today, only married men light a candle. The candle should be long enough to last the entire Yom Kippur.
TO HONOR DECEASED PARENTS
In Belz, a non-Jew used to enter the shul just before Ne’ilah to light candles so that all the congregants would be able to see. Rebbetzin Malka suggested to her husband, the Sar Shalom of Belz, zy”a, that perhaps this minhag should be abolished and tall candles be lit on Erev Yom Kippur instead. The Sar Shalom, however, was adamantly against it: “Davka at this time we want a gentile to enter the shul so that Hashem can see the difference between a Yid and a gentile.”
As is accepted every yom tov when Yizkor is recited, a ner neshamah is kindled. This candle is lit at home.
FOR USE DURING HAVDALAH During Havdalah, we say “borei me’orei ha’eish” to commemorate light, which was created on Motzei Shabbos. This bracha is not made after yom tov because it is not applicable at that time. On Motzei Yom Kippur, however, we recognize the renewal of light.
Additionally, adjusting a flame is not permitted on Yom Kippur. Thus, when Yom Kippur ends, to indicate that we can now use fire again, we recite “borei me’orei ha’eish” and make the bracha specifically on a flame that was lit before — and not adjusted during — Yom Kippur.
