A cleansing and detoxifying center for a heathier you
Is it time to change the way we think about wellness?
For the young mother suffering joint inflammation that makes every second playing with her children a painful challenge. For the middle-aged woman facing varicose veins and poor circulation that just won’t to go away, no matter how carefully she takes her medication. For the successful businessman who wonders why he’s always fighting off clouds of fatigue and bad moods. For everyone who feels their body is always run down, no matter how many times they sit with their doctor, trying to explain the inescapable symptoms that show up every single day. With so many men and women suffering, isn’t it truly time to change the way we think about our health, bodies, and treatments?
H O C AT T OZO N E C HAM B ER
At Your Health Success Center, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Founded by Mr. Joseph, YHS is not just a spa or a nutrition center - and it’s certainly not just a medical spa. Instead, it’s all three, and that’s just the beginning. Your Health Success Facility is a holistic wellness center that offers health guidance, nutritional coaching, and a range of FDA-approved equipment to detoxify and cleanse the body. Though you may have seen the word “holistic” thrown around by everyone from the stylist at your local salon to your Chinese acupuncturist, the word itself refers to a distinct way of treating illness and creating preventative solutions for healthier living. Simply put, holistic wellness means that YHS treatments don’t just treat your symptoms—-which may range from fatigue to inflammation to varicose veins---but they create treatments to address the whole person, taking into account your mental health, social environment, nutrition, and overall physical wellbeing.

While you may visit YHS to discuss a specific complaint or pain, you won’t be treated as just a problem to solve. Instead, you’ll be given a full consultation to understand your physical wellness and be guided to the best program or treatment. And although the team at YHS is proudly trained and focused on results-backed health treatments, that doesn’t mean they ignore the most important component of health: The Ultimate Healer. Rather, YHS believes that opening our bodies to natural healing is a Torah value. By choosing the treatments that allow us to heal from the inside out, we give our miraculous bodies the best opportunity to recover and restore our natural defenses—keeping us healthy today and preventing future illnesses. Specifically, naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting-edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies' ability to ward off and combat disease.
Our Hocatt Ozone Steam Sauna provides advanced detox, oxygenation, increased circulation, immunity, energy, reduced scars, and beauty/anti-aging benefits, among many others.
Your Health Success Center also has a wide variety of sauna, oxygen therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field, and cleansing treatments to bring you back to your best self.
For more information, or to learn more about our services, give us a call to schedule a consultation at 718.808.9696. If you’d like to see more of our services and read valuable information about your health and wellness, find us online at yourhealthsuccess.com

EXCELLENT EXCURSIONS (Re: Excursions, Issue 6) I would like to thank you for the incredible Sukkos issue. I can’t imagine how much effort went into it! It was amazing that the trips had public transportation information, driving directions, travel times and photos of each destination. The details were all very clear. We heard from many others who also appreciated your Excursions section. Thank you so much for this service to the community. We are very excited to have your publication in Boro Park. M.R.
Our family wants to thank you for the fun time we had on Chol Hamoed. Among your many suggestions, you listed MetroRock in Brooklyn. We all had an amazing experience there — and we’d never have known about it, if not for The Boro Park View! It wasn’t only us; all of my friends’ families seem to have planned their outings around the Excursions suggestions. Much appreciated, H.S.

A DISCREPANCY? (Re: Remembrance, Issue 5) Thanks for a terrific magazine! However, in the story “Remembrance,” Basya Moses mentions going to shul to say Yizkor several weeks after the passing of her father. It is a universal minhag that Yizkor is not said in the first year, which makes the reader doubt the details of the story… R.K. BASYA MOSES RESPONDS: Thank you for bringing up this point. I am aware that a lot of people have a minhag not to say Yizkor for deceased parents in the first year, but in our chassidus, as well as in many other sects, it is a minhag to recite Yizkor also in the first year. Except for the names of the shuls, every detail of the story was true.
A COMMENDABLE CHESED Though it’s a bit belated, I wanted to give public recognition to an amazing chesed. On Erev Yom Kippur, the Bobover Bikur Cholim had a special project that the entire community was welcome to take advantage of. They provided IV infusions for all those for whom it was deemed necessary in order to get through Yom Kippur easily and safely. While the idea was something I’d heard of, it was when a member of my family couldn’t fast that I first learned of the extent of this impressive undertaking. All afternoon on Erev Yom Kippur, the Bobover beis medrash is staffed with nurses who insert the lines. They then send the patients home with bags of liquids for infusion with instructions on how to properly do it. If for some reason a patient can’t come to shul, they even send nurses to the patient’s home to insert the line. In addition to this amazing chesed, they also maintain a staff of non-Jewish nurses and EMTs who are on duty the entire day of Yom Kippur for emergencies. A group of yungerleit runs the project on a day when most Yidden are busy with two seudos, mikvah, Mincha and visiting relatives to bless and be blessed with wishes for a good year. It reminds me of the story that took place in the time of the Yetev Lev, zt”l. One Yom Kippur evening, before Kol Nidrei, the rosh hakahal came to him, chagrined that because he’d been busy all day trying to save someone from conscription into the army, he had not eaten the seudos, gone to the mikvah, nor davened Mincha. The Yetev Lev answered him that he, the Rebbe, had eaten the two requisite seudos, gone to the mikvah and davened Mincha. “Would you want to exchange merits with me?” the Rebbe asked. Shira Weiss

The Gemara says that any person who has chein is a yarei Shamayim (Sukkah 49b). In addition to the seven paths toward acquiring chein enumerated by Rav Biderman above, R’ Chaim Shmulevitz, zt”l, in Sichos Mussar (Ma’amar 4) lists two more methods for attaining chein. We can add them to our list: (8.) Be humble. It says in Mishlei (3:34), “And to the humble, He grants chein.” (9.) Learn Torah. In Mishlei (5:19) there is an allusion that Torah inspires chein. I will add a tenth item to our list: (10.) Pursue chesed and emes. It says in Mishlei, “Chesed v’emes al ya’azvucha… um’tza chein v’seichel tov b’einei Elokim v’adam — Kindness and truth shall not leave you. Bind them upon your neck, inscribe them upon the table of your heart, and find chein and good understanding in the eyes of Hashem and man.” (Mishlei 3:3–4) In our tefillos each morning we beseech Hashem to grant us chein, chesed and rachamim in His eyes and in the eyes of all who behold us. So may it be for all of us.

New Car Seat Law Requires Kids Under 2 to Face Rearward A newly enacted law will require car seats for nearly all children under the age of two to be positioned facing the back of the vehicle. USA Today reported that the law was intended to promote greater safety for babies and toddlers and applies to all children two years old and under who do not exceed the height and weight guidelines outlined by their car seat’s manufacturer. Previously, New York State law did not specify which way car seats should face, although manufacturers had long advocated for placing infant car seats facing rearward to better protect their occupants. The law was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in October 2017 and goes into effect on Friday, November 1. According to the bill, children under the age of two are 75 percent more likely to be injured if they are sitting in forward-facing car seats instead of rear-facing seats. The risk factor increases five times for children between the ages of one and two years old. The American Automobile Association reported that car crashes are the second leading cause of injury and deaths in children ages one to four. In year 2017, 675 children under 12 died in crashes, with 116,000 others injured. Senator Joseph Robach sponsored the bill in the State Senate. “By ensuring that children under the age of two are restrained in a rearfacing car seat, we can limit the effects a car accident may have on their head and neck and increasing their safety as a whole,” said Senator Robach. Four other states already have laws on the books requiring rear-facing car seats for children under two: California, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.
Early Voting Comes to New York With Election Day just days away, those who are unable to get to the polls next Tuesday have the ability to

cast their ballots early, from now through Sunday, November 3. A bill signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in January opened up early voting in New York for the first time ever. Under the new law, early voting begins eight days before the election, making voting more convenient, particularly for those who have professional or familial obligations that make it difficult to get to the polls on Election Day. Early voting is also expected to ease waiting times on Election Day. Boro Parkers who want to cast their ballots ahead of the November 5th general election will have to identify their early voting site — which may not be the same as their regular polling place — either by calling Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein’s office at 718-853-9616 or by entering their home address at https://nyc.pollsitelocator.com/search. Early voting was one of several items on Cuomo’s 2019 Justice Agenda, which also synchronized federal and state primary elections and created a mechanism
for 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote when they turn 18. “Too many generations of New Yorkers have been discouraged from exercising their right to vote, and this year we enacted a series of new measures to fix that and help bring our voting laws into the 21st century,” said Cuomo. “Early voting is just one of the many steps we’ve taken to break down barriers to democracy, and I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of this opportunity to skip the lines on Election Day and ensure their voices are heard at the ballot box.”

evening… but one second.” Elisheva suddenly realized that her approach to this conversation was silly. Even if this whole incident was making her feel pressured, that didn’t mean she had to stop everything and salute just because of a phone call from the secretary of a lawyer they had never heard of. “I’m sure you understand that we would not want to come to a meeting without having any knowledge about what exactly the whole thing is all about. Either find out and get back to me with some more information, or tell Mr. Rosenblit to be in touch with me directly.” “I’ll let him know,” the secretary said, just as Elisheva came around the front of the building. She glanced behind to make sure the cat wasn’t following her, and when she turned back, she came face to face with her husband, who was just returning home. Eliyah listened to Elisheva’s report about the conversation she’d just had. Then he laughed. “Why are you laughing?” “Nothing, I just thought about how in books, phone calls from strange lawyers are usually about a hefty inheritance that the heroes of the story somehow came into.” “Oh, and you’re already spending this inheritance...” Elisheva smiled wryly. “It sure wouldn’t hurt us, but I’m sorry to tell you that this phone call had nothing to do with money. It was about Tzippy, or rather, her full name, Tziporah Genendel.” Eliyahu grew serious. “I’m not spending any inheritance; I just pointed out that it’s like that in books. In reality, of course, lawyers usually want to discuss much more banal things — ancient documents they’ve found, missing signatures... Tzippy didn’t have any problem with her army exemption, right?” “Of course not.” They were standing in the stairwell, whispering. “I’m afraid it has to do with the shidduch — you know, her and Peretz.” “Does something seem wrong, chalilah?” “I don’t know. What do we know about the Stockhammers, come to think of it? The mother is a Krohn. Who are the Krohns? We were hardly able to find out anything about them.” “Oh, you’re afraid there’s a problem that someone wants to warn us about? But when it comes to these things, Hashem yishmor, people usually ask a rav to update the other side. Not a lawyer.” Elisheva took a deep breath and revealed the worst of her fears: “Maybe they don’t want us.” “You’re taking this too far,” Eliyahu said. “Again you’re worried about the fact that your father grew up after the war as an orphan, with no knowledge about his family. You know how many people like that there were? And they went and established beautiful families, and everything was fine. Wait a minute; you spoke to Peretz’s mother two days ago, didn’t you?”

“Right.” “So, what did you talk about?” “Nothing major — she called to say how much she enjoyed having Tzippy over Shabbos, and she thanked me for the tray I sent.” She allowed a small smile. “It was a very classic style, and Tzippy wrapped it beautifully. You wouldn’t believe that it’s another one of those wedding gifts we got all those years ago.” Eliyahu went back to the subject at hand. “Your conversation went well?” “Yes, baruch Hashem, it really did.” “Well, then it doesn’t seem likely that they sent a lawyer right afterward to tell us that they want to break the shidduch... And besides, in our circles, this is not a matter for lawyers. I really think, Elisheva,” he turned toward the stairs, “that you can stop worrying so much.” Could she? Maybe. They went upstairs, ate lunch and Eliyahu took a short nap. Then he returned to kollel, while the afternoon routine began at home. Miri came to visit with baby Shmuly, and she showed her mother a few things that she’d bought for him that morning, “with the gift that you gave us for the bris, Mommy. The pacifier clip cost 40 shekel, and this outfit cost 120. This one was a 110, and the blanket was 60. If you go downstairs you can see the hook on the carriage that I also bought; that was 60.” “I’m happy that you are enjoying the money.” Elisheva focused on the baby’s face as he lay in her arms, oblivious to all the kissing and cooing in his direction. “But, um… didn’t you need the money for the bris? And I thought you got lots of clothes as gifts.” “He got only one blanket, a really thin, strange, itchy one, and the clothes were mostly Shabbos stretchies. We did get a few weekday ones too, but I really didn’t like most of them, and the few that I did like will only fit him in a few months.” “So you paid for the bris yourselves?” “Yaakov’s parents and grand-
mother gave us most of the money, and we paid for the rest with the checks we got as gifts.” “And what about a carriage?” I thought that if you didn’t need the four hundred shekel for the bris, you’d use it for a sensible carriage at least. The children gathered around them excitedly to see their little nephew, but right now Elisheva had eyes only for Miri’s face, which seemed to have clouded over somewhat. “For now I’m using my sisterin-law’s carriage. Yaakov’s parents want to give something toward a new one for us, but even with that we wouldn’t have enough money to buy a really good carriage. I don’t want a simple one. After I get the government child allowance, hopefully we’ll be able to afford it, b’ezras Hashem.” What’s considered a “really good carriage”? Elisheva thought, keeping her thoughts to herself. Miri was a young mother. This was her first child, and it was great that she had the energy to go out shopping. She was also allowed to want nice clothes and a good carriage and a pretty mobile and a cute pacifier clip for her baby. She was allowed to. Especially since her monthly salary was higher than her mother’s. The question was if she, Elisheva, shouldn’t be gently guiding Miri to lower her standards just a tiny drop... Didn’t a young couple just starting out need to be more financially aware? Were there no cheaper pacifier clips? Did the baby really need all those crystal beads? And the clothes… Could she not have found cute clothes for cheaper? Elisheva and her husband had definitely meant something entirely different when they’d made the effort to give the couple this money. Still, Elisheva pressed her lips together and didn’t say a word. She’d given a gift, and Miri had used it however she’d wanted. Perhaps someone needed to give Miri some hadracha here, but Elisheva desperately hoped that it would not have to be her. To be continued...

ISIS Leader Al-Baghdadi Killed in Special Operations Raid THE PULSE: The leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed by U.S. forces in a raid in Idlib, a province in northern Syria. The strike was conducted by U.S. Special Forces using eight helicopters to attack the al-Baghdadi compound. The attack also included the use of drones and jets. Recognizing that he was cor-

nered, al-Baghdadi detonated an explosive vest, killing himself and those around him. There were no U.S. casualties in the strike. Syria, Russia, Turkey, Iraq and the Kurds all assisted in the successful operation. THE IMPACT: The death of al-Baghdadi is a blow to
jihadists around the world. It is a significant victory against the forces of terror. It is a testament to the resolve of the American government and its armed forces to bring to justice those responsible for terror. Al-Baghdadi’s death weakens ISIS, but the threat posed by the terrorist group remains. The fear that ISIS fighters may regroup is still real. POLITICAL IMPACT: President Trump oversaw and
ordered the raid. As commander and chief of the armed forces, he will receive credit for this successful operation. It will provide a muchneeded boost for Trump, as he has received much criticism for his decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria. However, the raid also highlights the importance of a continued U.S. presence in Syria, which is at odds with Trump’s stated policy. Such a presence is necessary for the military to continue to conduct targeted operations against ISIS and other terror groups. Furthermore, the Kurdish forces in the region provided valuable assistance with this operation. Former Republican Representative Mike Rogers (R-MI), who chaired the House Intelligence Committee, noted that there was no way that the raid could have been carried out without the assistance of the Kurds. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper echoed the sentiments, and President Trump explicitly recognized and thanked the Kurds for their help. Many perceive Trump’s Syria policy as a tacit abandonment of the Kurds to Turkish forces. This successful raid may result in renewed calls for protection for America’s Kurdish allies.
Tim Ryan Ends His Presidential Campaign THE PULSE: Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH) withdrew from the Democratic presidential race. Ryan billed himself as a centrist candidate who would be able to win back Midwestern Democratic support that was lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Ryan qualified for the first two Democratic debates, but failed to be eligible for the third. THE IMPACT: Ryan’s departure cedes the field to other
Midwestern and Western candidates such as Montana Governor Steve Bullock, Senator Amy Klobuchar (DMN), and Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), who are all attempting to appeal to the same demographic of the centrist blue-collar Democrat who may have voted for Trump in the last election. Ryan’s departure allows him to focus on running his campaign for reelection in Ohio’s 13th district.
Sondland Testifies to Existence of Quid Pro Quo THE PULSE: According to media reports, U.S. ambas-
sador to the EU Gordon Sondland told the House committees investigating President Trump that Trump’s de-
mand that Ukraine investigate Burisma Holdings and alleged 2016 election interference was a condition for a White House meeting between President Zelensky and President Trump. THE IMPACT: Sondland’s testimony appears to corrob-
orate the earlier testimony of Ambassador Bill Taylor, who said that Trump conditioned the delivery of U.S. aid to Ukraine on the investigation of Burisma Holdings and Hunter Biden. Trump and his supporters have repeatedly denied any quid pro quo, and Sondland’s testimony may further complicate their line of defense.
Warren and Buttigieg Express Openness to Conditioning Aid to Israel THE PULSE: On the campaign trail, both Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg were asked to comment on the policies of the Netanyahu government. Senator Warren stated that “Netanyahu says that he is going to take Israel in a direction of increasing settlements. That does not move us toward a two-state solution,” and “It is the official policy of the United States of America to support a two-state solution, and if Israel is moving in the opposite direction, then everything is on the table.” She was asked by a reporter if that would include freezing U.S. aid to Israel, and she responded: “Everything is on the table.” At a campaign event in Chicago, Buttigieg expressed a similar sentiment. He said: “The aid is leverage to guide Israel in the right direction, and if, for example, there is follow-through to these threats on annexation, I am committed to ensuring that the U.S. is not footing the bill for that.” THE IMPACT: The comments of Warren and Buttigieg received widespread condemnation from mainstream pro-Israel groups who insisted that U.S. aid to Israel is beneficial to the security of both countries and should not be conditioned upon the Palestinian situation. The responses of Senator Warren and Mayor Buttigieg will likely strengthen the narrative of those who wish to portray Democrats as soft on their support for Israel and who therefore claim that bipartisan support for Israel can no longer be taken for granted. The comments of Warren and Buttigieg are worrisome and cause for concern. They may be indicative of the clout of those in the Democratic party that are openly critical of Israel. However, it should be noted that Democratic candidate Amy Klobuchar recently came out forcefully in defense of Israel’s security when she publicly condemned the administration’s Syria policy as harmful to Israel’s security.

Chickpeas has its roots deeply grounded in Jewish cuisine, with minhagim and stories of mesiras nefesh involving this legume going back hundreds of years. The most commonly accepted minhag is to serve chickpeas — “bebelach” or “arbis” in Yiddish — to welcome a newborn baby boy at the shalom zachor on his first Friday night. Indeed, many actually refer to chickpeas as “zachor bundlach.” According to the sefer Otzar Hachaim, the reason for this minhag is that in ancient times, beans were a food of mourning, and when a baby is born, there’s the aveilus over the loss of the Torah learning that the child was forced to forget before coming down to this world. The Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, brings in Sefer Shefa Chaim that when one eats a food, he should internalize its intended kavanah. When consuming “arbes” at a shalom zachor, one should have in mind “V’harbah arbeh es zaracha.” The sefer Sipirei Shel Tzaddikim relates the following fascinating story: R’ Yechiel Yaakov M’Koznitz was once visiting a small town and stepped into the local shul. A childless couple lived adjacent to the beis midrash, and the woman, who had already passed childbearing age, was out in the field picking beans. Seeing this, the Rebbe asked, “Nu, will there be a shalom zachor?” and although she was past the prime of her life, she was miraculously blessed with a son.

OF MINHAGIM AND MESIRAS NEFESH On Friday night, many have the minhag to serve chickpeas along with the soup. One of the reasons also refers to aveilus — these beans are served in remembrance of the mourning of Moshe Rabbeinu, who was niftar on Shabbos. According to the Shulchan Aruch, it’s customary to serve chickpeas on Purim in remembrance of Queen Esther who subsisted on mostly beans in the palace of Achashveirosh. Interestingly, at the Seudas Esther, which took place on the second day of Pesach, Esther didn’t want to transgress the laws of Pesach by serving chometz, so she creatively served beans to Achashveirosh and Haman as well. (Those were the days before the custom of refraining from kitniyos on Pesach was observed.) Another historical incident involving chickpeas is detailed in Sefer Daniel. When
Daniel, along with Chananya, Mishael and Azarye, were forced into exile and held captive to serve King Nevuchadnezer in his royal palace in Bavel, they were fed according to the king’s orders. The royal meal referred to as “pas bag bamelech” was, according to the Zohar, a hearty dish consisting of meat and milk. Daniel begged the king’s servants to bring them water and some beans so that they should not contaminate their holy souls with this forbidden food, but the royal soldiers refused. They feared that the king would notice on the boys a pallor that would indicate they were malnourished, and that they’d be punished for disobeying the king’s command. Daniel, however, persisted in asking for water and beans and requested a ten-day trial in which they would be allowed to try subsisting on this meager diet. Miraculously, after this trial period, the four lads from Yerushalayim appeared robust and healthy, and their minds were totally alert, so much so that the king observed that their understanding and clear judgment were ten times sharper than those of his greatest minds and even his men of sorcery. This was all despite their poor diet.
CHICKPEAS FOR THE BALABUSTA As of late, chickpeas have increased in popularity and become a healthy staple in our diets. They are readily available in refrigerated containers, cans and vacuum-packed pouches, but nothing comes close to the homemade variety, cooked to perfection. I always cook extra and freeze them in snack-size Ziploc bags for a healthy lunch or snack. As to which brand of chickpeas to cook, it’s a quite controversial issue for the dis-

Pot-Boiled Chickpeas It is difficult to give exact cooking directions, as cooking time is unpredictable. If beans are very dry, they will take more time to soften.
INGREDIENTS 3 packages chickpeas
Oven-Baked Chickpeas
Instant Pot Chickpeas
This new method, which is gaining popularity in our extended family, was graciously shared by my sister-in-law. It is a sweeter version, so adjust sugar according to your family’s preferences.
This method uses an instant pot, which is an electric contraption that merges the functions of a pressure cooker and a slow cooker. It is a fairly new gadget on the market and is gaining popularity at an amazing speed.
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS 2 lb. chickpeas
1 package chickpeas
1 tsp. baking soda
4 cups boiling water
3–4 T. salt
1½ T. sugar
½ T. sugar
1½–2 T. salt
½ T. paprika
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. black pepper
Black pepper, paprika and crushed pepper to taste
½ tsp. crushed red pepper
DIRECTIONS DIRECTIONS 1. Soak beans for a minimum of 12 hours. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. 3. Place checked beans into a parchment-lined 9x13 pan. Pour 4 cups of boiling water over beans and add rest of ingredients. 4. Cover lightly, and bake for 2 hours.
1. Soak beans in water with baking soda for 8 to 12 hours. 2. Check beans carefully. Rinse well and place in pot. 3. Cover with a generous amount of water, making sure you don’t exceed the fill line. Add salt, sugar and spices. 4. Cook on “bean” or “multi-grain” setting for 60 to 70 minutes. If your pot doesn’t have a bean setting, refer to the manual and follow instructions. Do not attempt to open the pot until it has cooled down.
2 T. baking soda Salt, paprika and black pepper, to taste Crushed red pepper and cayenne pepper, optional Scant amount of sugar
DIRECTIONS 1. Soak beans for 8 to 24 hours in water with baking soda. If soaking for a longer period of time, it is advisable to change the water once in between. 2. Drain beans and place into an 8-quart pot. Cover beans with water and bring to boil. Reduce flame to low-medium setting and cook for 2 hours. 3. Add salt, paprika, black pepper and sugar (for a hotter variety, add crushed pepper and cayenne pepper as well). Taste water and adjust seasoning; water should be oversalted and well-spiced for beans to be flavorful. 4. Cook for another 10 minutes. 5. Remove three chickpeas and place in freezer for 5 minutes to cool. Taste. If skins are soft, beans are ready. If not, cook for longer, checking every 20 to 30 minutes. 6. Shut flame when done and drain water very well.

The birth of a baby boy is a source of true joy for Klal Yisroel, for another servant of the Master has joined the ranks. All preparations for the peak display of this simcha, the bris, are carried out with much happiness, as the Gemara in Shabbos states, “Every mitzvah that the Yidden accepted b’simcha, like milah, continues to be carried out happily.” The many customs associated with this special time are laden with an extra dose of joy and true love for the mitzvah. Here’s a close look at some of the minhagim integral to this transformational life cycle event. 76 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 30, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
SHALOM ZACHOR Frightened and distressed, a man came to Reb Aharon of Belz, zy”a, for a bracha. “My child is dangerously sick,” he said. “When was the child born?” the Rebbe asked. “In 5708 (1948),” the father replied. The Rebbe asked if there had been a shalom zachor on the first Friday night after the child’s birth. Indeed, it turned out that this minhag had not been performed. War had raged in Eretz Yisroel in 1948, and people had remained in their homes for shelter; no one had ventured out on the streets unnecessarily. “Your child is missing brachos!” the Rebbe resolved. The shalom zachor affords a special opportunity for family and friends to wish the new father the zechus to raise
his son to Torah, chuppah and maasim tovim. These brachos accompany the newborn as he embarks on his journey in this world, safeguarding him with a special shemirah. The Belzer Rav instructed the father to request that the mispallelim in his shul make up for the lost blessings so the child could merit a speedy recovery. THE SHALOM ZACHOR is a simcha. It is a display of gratitude for the miracle of another Yiddishe baby boy lighting up this world. At the same time, the shalom zachor is indicative of a level of mourning, and with their participation, the guests provide a measure of consolation to the pure neshamah of the brand-new baby. Just a few days or hours earlier, the neshamah had reveled in the upper spheres, close to Hashem, enjoying a special state of peace and comfort. Suddenly, at birth, the neshamah was thrust into a human physique, into a world full of negativity and impurity. Transitioning from a reality of authentic purity to our challenging world, where good and bad are intertwined, is perhaps the greatest trauma a neshamah ever endures. The neshamah’s lost learning is another matter requiring nechamah. Before he was born, a malach learned the entire Torah with the baby, but with a flick above his mouth at birth, the baby forgets all he has learned. We eat chickpeas at the shalom zachor for, as food traditionally served to aveilim, it reminds us of the newborn’s sorrow. Their round shape symbolizes the cycle of life. Like a ball rolling round and round, the neshamah originates in Shamayim and returns to Shamayim. It has no “mouth,” leaving the mourner without a “mouth” to speak in his deep grief. Chickpeas are also known as “arbis,” reminiscent of Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s promise to Avraham Avinu, “V’harbah arbeh es zaracha... — I will multiply your seed like the stars in Heaven and sand on the seashore” (Bereishis 22:17). Beer is often served, perhaps due to the symbolic round shape of the barley it is made from, much like the beans. The shalom zachor also marks the significance of the baby experiencing a Shabbos. Before the baby can be brought to his bris, he readies himself by living through this holy day. This can be compared to a king who only offers an audience to his guests once they’ve met his queen. Eight days is the minimum span of time that unquestionably includes a Shabbos. This day brings the newborn closer to the great act of bris milah — another cause for the celebration. Gladdening the father of the newborn by partaking in the shalom zachor shows the new baby the difference in this world — it is a place where one can do good. Whereas in the upper realms, the neshamah may be closer to Hashem, only in this world can it perfect itself through actions, even one as slight as the kindness of bringing joy to another.
“NOW WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO SIT?”
VACH NACHT Standing at the threshold of the great day when the baby will join the ranks of Klal Yisroel, it is customary to prepare a seudah. This demonstrates our deep love for the upcoming mitzvah of milah.

Many have the custom of repeating this legendary story of the Baal Shem Tov during the vach nacht. In one village, there was a priest who used to employ sorcery to take the lives of Yiddishe infants before they reached their bris. A Yid in that village had a baby boy, and the Baal Shem Tov saw that the priest was preparing to kill the child. The Baal Shem Tov hurried over on the night before the bris and told the Yid to lock the door, and not leave any space open at all. “Prepare large, heavy sticks,” the Baal Shem Tov instructed, “and when I tell you to strike, smack with all your might.” At night, there was a knock at the door. It was the priest. The Yid didn’t open, as the Rebbe had instructed. Through witchcraft, the priest took on the figure of a cat and began digging up the earth underneath the house. In this way, he managed to poke his way inside the home. The Rebbe signaled, and the Yid began hitting with force. Wounded and with broken bones, the priest returned home. The following morning, the bris milah took place, amid great joy. The priest was duly upset. He convinced the leaders to set up a debate between himself and the Baal Shem Tov. The priest was first in establishing himself against his opponent, but try as he might, he could not muster his powers of witchcraft to fully accomplish his tricks. Then it was the Baal Shem Tov’s turn. “I won’t do anything; I will just call all the little children whom you killed,” the Rebbe said, “and they will take revenge on you.” Immediately, a large group of little children gathered around the priest, and they didn’t leave even a single bone in the priest’s body whole. The Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, once repeated at a vach nacht that it is a segulah not only to tell this story, but to repeat any story about tzaddikim, because this influences their merits and holiness upon the newborn.

It is an auspicious night for the newborn, a night when stores of kedushah hang in abundance, ready to be drawn for the child. Our targeted tefillos at this time outfit the child with the power to combat his yetzer hara and lead a life of holiness. It is a time to daven that the child grow up to be righteous, wise and a yarei Shamayim. This night is aptly called the “vach nacht” — the leil shimurim. Sefardim call this night “bris Yitzchak.” The father of the newborn remains awake all night, or at least until chatzos, learning Torah and topics related to the bris, and of course, davening for the child. Many have the minhag to read from the Zohar on Parshas Lech Lecha, which discusses the significance of bris milah. The merit of bris milah is great, and the Satan is aware of it. He is ready to do anything in his power to prevent this special mitzvah from taking place. Learning and davening at the baby’s side swathes the baby in an extra layer of protection against all external forces as the big day arrives. BEFORE A CHILD IS BROUGHT to his milah, he must first accept upon himself the ol Malchus Shamayim. The newborn himself lacks sufficient intellect, so we do it for him. We say Shema at the side of his crib, bearing in mind that our words are helping the child accept the yoke of Heaven. Young children who are free of sin, like malachim, come to say Shema. Their pure lips utter the age-old words, hoping to influence the child to remain pure and free of sin his entire life. Since young children cannot possibly evoke the deeper intentions of saying Shema on behalf of the newborn, adults also recite it in the baby’s presence.
WELCOMING ELIYAHU HANAVI
A chair designated for Eliyahu Hanavi graces every bris, signifying his guest attendance. Being in the presence of Eliyahu Hanavi makes participating in a bris that much more special. But why does he come, and what gained him the title “Eliyahu Malach Habris?” King Achav, who ruled over the Aseres Hashevatim, established harsh decrees against keeping the Torah and mitzvos, including a ban on the mitzvah of milah. This distressed Eliyahu Hanavi, awakening his zealousness. He asked Hashem to bring all rain and dew to a standstill until the Yidden would do teshuvah. Queen Izevel was enraged, and she had Eliyahu sentenced to death. Eliyahu davened, and Hashem appeared to him and promised that because he had ap-
propriately stood up for what was right, he would be privileged to witness Yidden perform the bris milah for all eternity. There was one issue with this: Eliyahu Hanavi’s zealous nature. “You know that I cannot keep quiet in the presence of someone who has sinned,” he said to Hashem. How could he possibly attend the bris of every Jewish baby if sinners would be in attendance too? Hashem promised Eliyahu that on the day of a bris, the father of the baby, the mohel and all those present would be completely forgiven of all their sins! In honor of having Eliyahu Hanavi in attendance, we prepare for his arrival with a special chair. There are shuls that have a special chair used just for this purpose. Some have the custom of having the sandek sit on this chair while holding the baby on his lap. Others use a chair wide enough to seat the sandek with a spot beside him for Eliyahu Hanavi. Still a third minhag is to keep the kisei shel Eliyahu empty and use another chair nearby for the sandek to sit on. Before performing the bris, the mohel asks Eliyahu Hanavi to watch over the newborn and protect him so nothing goes wrong with the circumcision.
YOU CAN HAVE IT. for keeps.
KIBBUDIM Reb David Yitzchok Eizik of Skolya, zt”l, used to say, “If people who need a yeshuah would know how great it is to be present at a bris milah, they would go from one bris to another. At the time when the baby cries, it is a tremendous eis ratzon to daven for refuos and yeshuos in all areas, because all tefillos go up to Shamayim together with the baby’s pure cries, without anything holding them back.” Merely attending a bris is a privilege, and it is considered any extra honor to take part in the actual bris. KVATTER
The bris is the connection of the body to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and kedushah. The messengers who bring the baby to this momentous occasion are known as the kvatter and kvatterin. The Eliyahu Rabbah mentions the word “sandek” in plural — “sandekim” — including the ones who bring the baby to his bris in the special category reserved for the sandek. SANDEK
Being a sandek is a great honor and privilege. Many gedolim and rebbes never declined the zechus when offered. This kibbud is generally offered to a rav or to a grandparent of the baby. It is given to a person of good character, because it is brought down that the baby has a good chance of growing up to be like his sandek. The bris is likened to the bringing of ketores. Thus, the knees of the sandek, where the baby lies, are compared to the mizbe’ach. The Kohen who brought the ketores was blessed with riches. No Kohen (other than the Kohen Gadol) was granted the privilege of this avodah more than once, so as to give a chance to other Kohanim. Similarly, it is customary not to have the same sandek for

A chassid once honored Reb Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, zy”a, with being sandek and mohel. In the end, the young man’s father-in-law took the kibbudim for himself. The Rebbe was happy and expressed that he now had the opportunity to complete the mitzvah with a greater shleimus than if he would have truly done it. As the Gemara in Brachos brings down, a person who thought to do a mitzvah and was forced not to is considered not only to have done the mitzvah, but also to have done it with the utmost possible shleimus.

When Hashem was sandek for Avraham Avinu, He gave Avraham the entire Eretz Yisroel as a gift. The sandek will often follow this lead and gift the baby or pay for the bris seudah. AMIDAH L’BRACHOS
The person entrusted with holding the baby while the brachos after the bris and the baby’s name are called out is known as the “sandek me’umad,” or the “standing sandek.” In effect, the full honor of sandeka’us includes the role of sandek, amidah l’brachos and kvatter, in one. There are lots of choices that come along with the birth of a little boy. Many of them, like the decor at the vach nacht or the design of his nursery, won’t have lifelong bearing. Yet there is one decision that will follow the child for the rest of his life: his name. Not merely some random set of syllables for him to introduce himself by, nor an easy handle for others to refer to him, the name parents choose for their child provides him with an identity. In fact, according to the Ari, zt”l, a name is the person’s very essence.
NAME-GIVING IN ANTIQUITY Names are as old as man itself, and there was a certain simplicity and authenticity to the process in our early history. Adam was so named because he was created from the earth. Chava’s name identified her as the mother of all life. As each subsequent human entered the world, they were given an identification, a name that was distinctly theirs. The name choice was inspired by either the circumstances surrounding the person’s birth or the hopes for his future, like when Avraham and Sarah named their son Yitzchak, referring to
N

their laughter at the good tidings of his upcoming birth. As we commence Sefer Bereishis, we’ll notice one constant: There are no repeating names. Noach ish tzaddik, yet no one thought to name their child after him. Avraham Avinu was the father of our entire nation, and yet none of his descendants bore his name. The same held true for Moshe Rabbeinu, Hashem’s chosen one, venerated and depended upon by all of Klal Yisroel. This pattern extended all the way through Nach. Of the 21 kings in Malchus Yehudah, there was just one Dovid Hamelech, only one Shlomo. Esteemed as they were, and with all the kings of the same familial dynasty, the concept of repeated names just didn’t exist. This practice of naming the child as an expression of the emotions surrounding the birth continued for millennia, with fresh names custom-coined for each newborn. Once names started to repeat, they were more likely due to a lack of ideas than intentionally adopting someone else’s name.
NAMING AFTER… The minhag of naming a child after a deceased relative seems to have begun in the time of the Chashmonaim, though the practice was limited to the royal family and aristocracy. Gradually, the custom spread. Nowadays, among Ashkenazim in particular, the minhag is very enforced. This keeps the name and memory alive and forms a metaphysical bond between the baby and the one who passed. According to the Noam Elimelech (Bamidbar), this custom brings great honor to the deceased, because it allows his neshamah even greater elevation, based on the maasim tovim of his namesake. For the child, meanwhile, it can serve as a connection to the past, a reminder that he’s a precious link in a golden chain, and he can be inspired by the positive qualities of the special person he’s named after. Sefardi Jews, though, do name children after relatives who are still alive, taking their source directly from Gemara (Shabbos
T
84 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
134a), which records a child named after Reb Natan while he was still alive. The choice of how to name a child was, and still is, entirely within the purview of his parents, and there are few rules surrounding the event. But in Maseches Yoma (83b) the Gemara does caution against the use of the name of a wicked person. Surprisingly, this dictum was somewhat overlooked, as we see that there were Kohanim Gedolim and Tannaim who bore the name Yishmael. The name Menachem was also very popular with the Tannaim and Amoraim, and is certainly common today, even though the first Menachem was a king whose behavior did not find favor in the eyes of Hashem. Inexplicably, while that name survived and has gained popularity, other names of tzaddikim, like the names of our nevi’im Chavakuk and Malachi, have completely disappeared.
NEW NAMES The precise onset of the practice of repeating names is difficult to ascertain, but by the time of the first Churban, there were definitely popular names that were often being used. In fact, the practice was so prevalent at that point that it is easy to realize that it must have begun a lot earlier. The first recorded repeated names were clearly from the Torah, with specific names, including Yehudah, Eliezer, Yosef, Binyamin, Shimon and others, being favored. There were other names gaining popularity at the time as well, and while clearly Lashon Hakodesh, they were new compositions, not derived from names in Tanach. By the time of Churban Bayis Rishon, we start to see names that are reflective of the surrounding culture. Along with all of our troubles, it was beside the rivers of Bavel that another element of our galus, the struggle against assimilation, truly began. There were those who longed to return and proudly gave their children Jewish names, as well as those who gave new names denoting their sentiments of bitachon and consolation. These include Nechemia, Chasa-

diah, Pediah and so on. But it was also at that time that the Aramaic influence was first felt, with names receiving an ai ending — which partly means “the devotee of.” This was often a deviation from an original Lashon Hakodesh name (like Shammai, from Shemaiah, and Piltai from Pilatiah). Then there were Jewish names with a Persian influence (like Shabsai, named for the Shabbos) and fully Persian names (like Mordechai). From there on, it only got worse. By the time of the Chashmonaim, the Hellenistic culture dominated, and the names started to reflect that. Even aristocracy began using Greek names; the first Tanna in the Mishnah was Antignos ish Socho, a definitively Greek name. He wasn’t alone — and it didn’t stop there. Many names currently assumed to be distinctly “Yiddish” are in fact of Greek origin. We know that the Gemara is littered with names like Reb Chanina ben Dosa, Nakdimon, Elazar ben Harkanos, Rav Pappa, Reb Tarfon and so on. While those definitely sound Greek, they’re not exactly popular today. But then there’s Theodorus and Phoebus. While they may not sound familiar, some may be more likely to recognize the “Yiddish” Todros and Feivish. As a matter of fact, there is a reason why Feivel is often paired with Uri or Shraga: Phoebus is Greek for “light,” which is what Shraga means in Aramaic and Uri in Lashon Hakodesh.
SECULAR NAMES Going back to the growing usage of secular names, foreign influence started with a tepid Babylonian impact, a very strong Greek influence, and finally we find that the Roman conquest affected that era’s Jewish names as well. Perhaps not as extensively as the Greeks, but in Talmud Yerushalmi we encounter names like Drusus, Yustus (Justus), Romanus, and most surprising of all, the name Reb Yehudah ben Titus, which is mentioned twice in Gemara (Shabbos 14, 14c;
G
86 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Bikkurim 3, 65d). The use of secular names alongside one’s Jewish one was common practice throughout this time too. Hadassah went by Esther, Daniel was Belshatzer, and Chananya, Mishael and Azariah were also called Shedrach, Mishech and Abed Nego. Although the practice definitely started with the Misyavnim, it soon spread to even the frum Chashmonaim. There were ehrliche Kohanim Gedolim of Chashmonean descent that had dual names, the second clearly Greek: Alexander Yannai, Yehudah Arisobolos and Yochanan Horkanos. Evidently, some were just known by their secular names, but others still made sure that their non-Jewish names were used only in interactions with non-Jews. In those cases, one’s Latin name was a direct translation of their Lashon Hakodesh given name. For example, Tzadok became the Latin Justus, while Nesanel picked up the Greek Theodorus. Sadly, after some time, the secular name became the more prominent, and then the only, name given.
THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES Fast-forward to the early Middle Ages, the name-giving process was a fast and loose one. The concept of minting fresh names had never really disappeared, and so there were names like Emunah and Nissim, in recognition of circumstances; there were names like Shabsai, Pesach and Nissen, for children born at specific times; and there is even a record in the Middle Ages of a boy named Chanukah! It was also at this time that names unseen for over 800 years began to make their reappearance. In the time of the Geonim we find the first Avraham — Rav Avraham Gaon — but the trend hadn’t yet shifted fully, and there was still an Aramaic sounding Rav Paltai Gaon. As often happens when adopting the new while preserving the old, many combined a Jewish name with a cultural name. That’s how names like Rav Saadiah Gaon
F
came to be; the Aramaic Saad, which means helper, with the yud-kei suffix now meant Helper to G-d. Since Babylonia was then under Islamic rule, there were even purely Arabic names used. We even find that the famous Babylonian Reish Gelusa (or exilarch) was named Yosi alHassan. Other names made their return around the time of the Rishonim. Rashi was Reb Shlomo Yitzchaki, the Rambam and Ramban were both Moshe, and the Rabbeinu Tam’s name was Yaakov. It was also in this generation that names like Dovid, Elchanan and Baruch resurfaced. Some dug deep — and went all the way back to Noach.
MORE SECULAR INFLUENCES As the Ashkenazim started moving further out, their names were clearly affected by evermore religious and cultural influences. At the time of the Second Crusade, for instance, there was a Baal Tosafos in France, one of the Rishonim in Sefer Mordechai, by the name of Rav Peter! The prevalence of secular names in 12th century Jewry had the rabbanim issue a clear directive: At his bris, every baby boy must be given a recognizably Jewish name by which he would be called up to the Torah. This directive included many names that were of Greek or Aramaic origin that were at that point recognized as Jewish by constant use within the community. Soon migration extended further, and Jews started settling beyond France and the Spanish territories, moving on to England, Poland, Germany and Russia. It was around that time that a new language surfaced. Approximately 1,100 year ago, Yiddish was conceived. It was likely unintentional, probably caused by Jewish parents’ garbled pronunciations of the local language as well as their penchant for nicknames, but with the new language, an entire slew of new names arose. Ostensibly they were “Jewish names,” or at least they were Jewish-sounding. One interesting name in that category is the name Zindel. As it turns out, the name was originally Alexander, which has been accepted too, but more commonly in the form of Sender.

Yosef became Yosel; Yaakov became Yekel, Yankel, Kopel or even Kopelman (from Jakob); and Yitzchak became Eizik (Isaac), Itzik, Itzl and even Zekl. Following the Rabbinic order of ensuring a Jewish name for every Jewish child, the names could now loosely be grouped into three categories: 1. As people opted to add a “matching” Lashon Hakodesh name to their existing secular name, some failed to see that their current name wasn’t exactly secular. And so, because they were unaware, we got combinations like Yitzchok Isaac, Yaakov Kopel and Shlomo Zalman. (That final one stumps many, but the Anglicized version of Shlomo is Solomon. Now give that a Yiddish twang… and there you go!) In the last generation (over the past 70 to 100 years or so), we’ve come to recognize the obvious Lashon Hakodesh “root names,” which is why many have reverted to only giving the main name at the bris, while sometimes still calling the child by the “nickname.” 2. For the second category, we find that as people were adopting Jewish names to go alongside their secular names, they attempted to match it as best as possible by definition or alliteration. Recently, we’re being met with the erroneous assumption that these names are inherently Yiddish. For the most part, though, these names have no Jewish origin and are, in fact, etymologically Germanic. Even so, the language similarities are so great that our present generation “recognizes” these names as Yiddish. Distinctly German names like Behr, Hersch and Volf, became Dov Ber (or Duber), Tzvi Hersh, and because of the bracha of Yaakov Avinu to Binyamin, that name was paired with Volf. Which nowadays has changed to the complete name of Binyamin Zev. These are the names we “recognize,” and so, nowadays, some have dropped the “Yiddish” name and just say the Lashon Hakodesh name at the bris, but here, too, they commonly use the Yiddish-sounding name for everyday use. 3. The third category are names that we don’t recognize. They certainly don’t ap-
88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
pear to be of secular origin, and so we assume that they are Yiddish. (To be clear, they are not.) In most of these cases, both names are said clearly at the bris. The names in this category are Bendit, Getzel, Gottlieb, Hertz and Feish/Feitel that we’ve happily accepted as “Yiddish” names, when in fact they have no Yiddish roots at all. For a clearer understanding of what these names originated from, let’s look at the names they were paired with: Baruch Bendit (Benedict), Elyakim Getzel (was the German Goetzl, a nickname for Gottfried), Yedidiah Gottlieb, Naftali Hertzke (Hertz/Hart, for the deer that Naftali was compared to), Chaim Feish or Chaim Feitel (Vital, direct Italian translation) and the aforementioned Shraga Feivish (Phoebus). For simple alliterations, you find that German names like Anschel (originally Anselm) became Asher Anschel; Mendel and Manis (both from the old German name Mann) became popularly Menachem Mendel and Menachem Manis. There is also Bunim (from the French term of endearment bon homme, good man), and because they sound so smooth together, we got the name Binyamin Bunim. Years later, when having a Jewish name was entirely the norm, some felt that it was unfitting to use a name that contained an appellation of Hashem for everyday interactions. Names that contained the yud-kei or alef-lamed, therefore, received an added name for daily use: Yehoshua became Yehoshua Heschel (later mistakenly assumed to be Yehoshua Hershel), and similarly, there was Yechiel Michel, Shmuel Zavil (Zangvill/ Old German), Yecheskel Shraga, Arye Leib, and perhaps more interestingly, Yekesiel Zalman and Yehudah Leib, which explain the mystery of why Yekesiel Yehudahs are nowadays so often called Zalman Leib! SEFER HAGILGULIM WRITES that the naming of a child is on some level ruach hakodesh on the part of the parents, with Hashem planting the name of the newborn into the mouths of the father and mother. It’s a Divine partnership that all who merit children are privileged to participate in. Naming the newly born life is an integral part of setting up his identity and ascertaining his future. “He’s excellent, he’s wonderful!” are the first words I hear when I question my shvigger about Dr. Robert Adler, my husband’s childhood physician. I’m on the search for a local doctor who can share advice with new parents that has been culled from years of experience. With Dr. Adler, it seems, I’ve hit gold.
H
“He saved your cousin’s life when he was resident,” my shvigger says, relating how the
90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 30, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
doctor had come onto the scene when a young relative was losing a battle with a severe case of pneumonia. Realizing that the child was in a dire situation, Dr. Adler quickly suctioned out fluid that was rapidly
building up in the child’s lungs — and ultimately saved his life. “He was always available,” my shvigger continues, “When your brother-in-law was in a touch-andgo situation,” she says, “Dr. Adler called every hour in the middle of the night to check up on him. He always gave us his all.” It comes as no surprise, then, that Dr. Adler is personable and forthcoming when I call him, more than willing to share his wealth of knowledge if it will result in healthier babies and better parenting. “What’s one thing you’d like every new parent to know?” I ask the doctor, assuming I’ll get a pat answer, but no — the floodgates open and out pours wisdom.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be seen by their pediatrician within two days of being discharged from the hospital. I can’t stress enough how important this is,” Dr. Adler tells me. “So many problems can be prevented — or caught in time — when this recommendation is followed.” He then proceeds to tell me a painful story of a baby in a different town who’d gone to a kimpeturin home with his mother before being seen by their pediatrician after discharge. The nurse there noticed the baby was blue and called Hatzoloh, and though he was stabilized and sent to Columbia to undergo surgery for a congenital heart defect that had gone unnoticed, it was too late. The child was unable to be saved. In another story, it was the mohel who recognized that a child was blue around the lips — more than a full week after he’d entered the world. “A simple oxygen test could have helped so much in these cases. We’ve been doing these tests for years, even before it became standardized practice.” Dr. Adler explains that although most babies have healthy hearts, there are some born with defects that can often be detected by a baby’s low oxygen saturation a few days after birth. A simple, non-invasive test can sometimes make a world of a difference. But it’s not just heart defects that can be diagnosed in that vital first office visit; a host of other problems can be teased out and monitored should there be cause for concern. “Jaundice is another issue that needs to be carefully handled. In one instance, there was a baby girl who went to a kimpeturin home without first seeing the pediatrician and was then sent to the hospital when the skin test for jaundice taken in the home’s nursery came back with numbers too high to read. She had a bilirubin count of 23, which is very high. Had they gone to the pediatrician beforehand, the hospitalization — which was probably hard on both mother and baby — could have been avoided… Sometimes jaundice can indicate a UTI, which a pediatrician can test for and treat without unnecessarily hospitalizing the child.” Everything from weight gain to head circumference must be carefully monitored to ensure a child is healthy and growing well. “When a newborn comes to us four days after birth, we want to see that the baby is gaining weight.” Though all babies grow differently, there are norms that doctors watch out for. Should a child present at a far end of the spectrum, there may be cause for concern. Dr. Adler tells me of a five-month-old who hadn’t been to the pediatrician regularly and also hadn’t gained an ounce since birth. “There were major problems,” he sadly says.
Had they gone to the pediatrician beforehand, the hospitalization — which was probably hard on both mother and baby — could have been avoided…
“Recommendations about when to see the doctor are truly made for a reason.” For new parents, though, choosing that doctor can be a parsha of its own. With so many big names out there, who should they choose to care for their child? Dr. Adler recommends asking around and asking around some more. “Some parents ask the nurses in the hospital because they see things that others don’t. They can offer a lot of insight, having gotten a feel for how various doctors practice.” Aside from feeling confident that a pediatrician is able to provide quality care, Dr. Adler also recommends choosing an office with more than one doctor and with great policies in place for communication with patients. “If a pediatrician in a solo practice goes on a vacation, they may not be available when you need them. You need your child’s doctors to be available. And you should feel comfortable enough that you can call them even every day (if needed) to properly care for your child.” Part of proper care involves caring for hospitalized patients. Dr. Adler tells me that visiting patients can be costly for a doctor, both in time and money, and therefore, some doctors have others do their hospital rounds. But that’s not an option in his book, for there is nothing like the watchful eye of a caring physician who’s overseeing his own patients. “We go up to the hospital even though it costs time and money… but we can sleep at night knowing that we’ve done everything right.” When all’s said and done, it seems to me that the critical tip encased in our conversation has communication as the key component: parents effectively communicating with doctors and doctors with parents. And it truly makes sense, because when doctors and parents work in tandem to do their utmost to care for the littlest ones, everyone can sleep like the proverbial baby… except, maybe the newborn himself. But that’s a different story!

xactly one week before my father’s yahrzeit, we were blessed with a new grandson. My father had lived with us as my children were growing up, and the sinews of their relationship were formed by the triumphs and tribulations of daily life. His wizened eye could detect a dejected spirit and, with pinpoint precision, he would know when to inject in each child a much-needed dose of love and humor. He would entertain their friends, too, with his wit and intellect. “Do you know that the bris will, im yirtzeh Hashem, take place on Zeidy’s yahrzeit?” I said to my son, the father of the baby, meaningfully. “Wow! I didn’t realize that! Good that you told me,” he responded with a smile and twinkle in his eye. Despite a firm belief that a grandparent should not be involved in the naming, as I announced the new birth to all of my siblings, they, like me, saw the concur-

ring of the bris and the yahrzeit as no mere coincidence. “Do you think they will name the baby after Pa?” they asked. With each repetition of my son’s response, I became more assured of the outcome. The bris was to be held in Bnei Brak, and Rav Chaim Kanievsky would be sandek. How auspicious to have Reb Chaim be sandek for a child named for my father. How absolutely perfect! I reside in Yerushalayim. The bris would be held immediately after Shacharis, and my family wanted to go to Beit Shemesh that morning with a minyan to say Kaddish at my parents kevarim. With much good will and little sleep we managed to go to the beis hachaim on the way to Bnei Brak for the bris, thinking we were going from my father to his new namesake. We arrived on time, and many of my siblings were in attendance, eagerly awaiting the momentous occasion. “Kvatter,”the mohel declared. The emotions escalated with each part of the ceremony. We exchanged glances with knowing smiles as my husband proclaimed, “Vayikarei shemo b’Yisroel … Yisroel Meyer ben …” But my father’s name had not been Yisroel Meyer.
Surely my husband had made a mistake! How could that be? I looked around the room, and my mechuteniste’s face came into view, showing pity. Comprehension settled on me like a lead apron! The mistake was my assuming that the child would be named for my father. My siblings sought any object to study instead of my crestfallen visage. Shame colored my cheeks as I realized how foolish I had been. My mind was wholly wrapped in my error, and the actual simcha seemed far removed from my reality. Somehow, I muddled through the seudah, trying very hard not to discuss the hot topic of the baby’s name. After the seudah, my son asked if I could come to their home and help out after the bris. When we arrived at their home, my daughter-in-law approached me with a mixture of apology and justification in her voice. “You know that my parents always consult their rav about names before naming a child,” she said. “He is known far and wide for his understanding of the influence of names and their combination with the parents’ names. The rav didn’t think your father’s name would be a good fit with our names.” If I had been shocked before, now I was incensed. It took superhuman effort not to voice my inner rage. Their rav didn’t like the combination of the names? My father was such a special person; it would be a zechus for any child to bear his name! I walked away to attend to the older children and slowly began to persuade myself that whatever their reason for giving the baby a different name, it was their baby. With time, the fresh wound scabbed, grew new skin and healed. It was a true learning experience, which I hoped would carry over into other aspects of my children’s lives. Recently, this son was blessed once again with a son. This time it was within the year of the passing of my mechuteniste’s father. Speculation arose that they would name after her father, who had been close to both my son and daughter-in-law. The day of the bris dawned, and the scene was familiar. The mohel proclaimed “Kvatter,” and the ritual began. Then came the words “Vayikarei shemo b’Yisroel…” and the name that followed was not the name of my mechuteniste’s father. A little later, as both my mechuteniste and I stood in the kitchen helping out with the seudas mitzvah, she approached me and confessed, “Years ago, when they didn’t name the baby after your father, I could see how you felt. Now I know how you felt. The rav did not like the combination of names. He felt it would not be a good mazel for the child. Yes, it hurts.” She sighed heavily. “My father was a person with such sterling middos, but really, we only want what is ultimately good for the baby.” So true.

They start out so small and grow so fast. You turn and suddenly — they’re not infants anymore but little people and you wonder — where did that newborn fuzz go? And then when all you do is run after them picking up their messes and thinking how “they’re so big!” you have the memory of those first few delicate days
of the peachy fuzz you buried your nose in
of the tiny toes you loved to tickle
of their tiny bodies so warm and fragile.
And you melt all over again.

Newborns are irresistible. With their soft, smooth skin; their tiny, curly lashes; and their flaky fingers and toes, it’s no wonder everyone wants to photograph them all the time. Getting your newborn professionally photographed is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself as a new mother. But the fun never ends... So here are some tips for photographing your brand-new baby by yourself, at home. 98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 30, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

KEEP IT SAFE
Keep a constant safety check.
The most important thing when it comes to photographing a baby is to keep the session safe. Babies are live, delicate and fragile, and you should never, ever put a baby in an uncomfortable or potentially dangerous position for the sake of “getting the shot.” Here’s what I do to keep babies safe in my studio: Before you start:
1. Sterilize all blankets, bonnets, wraps and props. 2. Keep things hygienic with good old hand-washing and lots of Purell. If it seems impossible, it probably is.
1
You know those shots where the baby is sitting with their elbows in front of their feet and their chin in their palms? I’d bet you’ve always wondered how photographers get the baby to hold the pose. Well, here’s the secret — we don’t. It’s Photoshopped. Every time I shoot an image like that, there’s someone holding the newborn’s hands and head, supporting them and making sure they don’t get hurt. Then we combine the images digitally. I was horrified one day when I saw a photo that an ametuer photographer took while trying to copy that pose — without knowing it was a composite! The baby’s hands were too deep under his chin, more like under his neck. His head was hanging down a little, and his fingers looked a bit blue. A pose like that can decrease circulation to little limbs and can make it hard for a baby to breathe. Don’t try this at home! Remember — if a pose seems impossible, it probably is. Same situation with this image 2 — it only looks like the mother is holding the baby up high. In reality, the baby was never lifted off the beanbag. The trick is adjusting the direction of the light and shooting from above, so the angle makes it seem as if the baby is upright. I do the same thing with hammocks. I know there are people who actually put the baby into a real, hanging hammock, and that can be really dangerous. If the baby looks uncomfortable, skip it.
3
Not all poses are meant for every baby. Some babies like to curl up more than others. Others like to be on their tummies, and yet others on their backs. In my studio, I always let the baby lead the session. If the baby looks uncomfortable or isn’t settling into a specific pose, I’ll skip it and find a pose they’re comfortable in. Have a spotter nearby.
4
Every time I pose a baby on a beanbag or in a basket, I keep a spotter nearby. The spotter’s job is to hover over the baby while I take the photographs, and support them in case they move. Newborn babies are too weak, fragile and wobbly to hold themselves, and they can easily roll over in a way that can hurt them. Don’t rely on getting them yourself — you might be too far or too slow while you’re shooting.
100 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 30, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Throughout newborn sessions, I constantly check for these three things: 1. Is the temperature right? The baby should be warm enough, but not too hot. I like to set the temperature to 80 degrees. If you’re using a portable heater, make sure it’s not too close or blowing directly at the baby. 2. Does the baby’s circulation look good? Do all the limbs look nice and pink? Sometimes, in certain poses, little limbs can get pinched by the rest of the baby’s weight. So watch out for those fingers and toes; if anything looks bluish, change the pose. 3. I like using fuzzy textures 5 and furry blankets, so I constantly make sure there’s no stray hair of fur getting wrapped around the baby’s fingers or toes. One little hair tangled around a toe can cause the baby lots of discomfort, so I’m always extra careful with that.
EASY POSES FOR AT-HOME SESSIONS Wrap the baby with a long, narrow piece of fabric 6 — you can get thin knit jerseys or stretchy cheesecloths from Walmart. I like to use only stretchy fabrics so that they wrap neatly, without bumps and wrinkles. Use something about 12 inches wide and between 3 and 5 feet long. Start at one end and gently wrap the baby, tucking the legs in. The wrap should be snug, but not too tight. (Make sure you can stick two fingers in and that the baby can breathe easily.) If the baby is relaxed and in a deep sleep, try leaving the hands or fingers out — it’s super cute. Lay the baby on a flat surface, like a bed. You can use a plain white blanket for a lifestyle look, or buy more of the same stretchy fabric (you’ll need a very large piece for this) and use that as the backdrop — drape the far side over the headboard and then pull gently to eliminate any creases or wrinkles. For a seamless look, the background should be gently rounded — and not creased — where the headboard meets the bed. Try something cute like this 7 with a teeny-tiny doll or teddy. Place the blanket under the baby, then drape over the legs and tuck under the chin. You can take the image from the top or sides. Another idea 8 is to take a close-up of your sleeping baby’s face. Babies are exquisitely beautiful. No props needed. Then take a closeup of the baby in Mommy’s arms. If Mommy’s looking down at the baby, take it from the top so you see Mommy’s profile in the side of the frame, but the focus should be on the baby. There’s nothing that portrays the wonderful connection between mother and baby quite like this pose.

LIGHTING AND ANGLES 7
Lighting and angles make all the difference in any image. Here’s a quick lighting and angle tip for newborn photography: Light down, shoot down. With newborn photography, you want the light to be coming from the side of the baby’s head, 9 and the shadows going down under the baby’s nose and chin. Lighting it the opposite way is called ghoul lighting, and it’s never very flattering. In regard to the angle, 10 shoot down the baby’s head. The baby’s head should always be closer to you than the rest of the body — it’s a lot more flattering for the baby. Whatever is closest to your camera looks the largest, and with babies it’s always cuter and more proportional to have the head front and center. Also, I’d much rather look down a cute little nose than up into it! Fraidy Shimon is a photographer who enters the magical world that children live in to photograph them. She specializes in newborn and child photography, and loves working with mothers who appreciate fine art and know that their children make the most beautiful artwork. Her passion is creating heirloom wall art that can be passed down the line as a legacy for their families. Fraidy is also the founder of Peppermint Photography Camp, and does private mentoring for professional photographers.

As one might imagine, the Johnson & Johnson company was founded by brothers — but there were three brothers, and not two. Seems like Johnson & Johnson & Johnson would’ve been overkill… In 1886, after listening to a speech delivered by an antiseptics advocate, Robert Johnson decided to start a company that would manufacture surgical dressings. Together with his two brothers, he established the Johnson & Johnson company. Robert was a fantastic leader and served as the company’s first president. The second brother, James, was a gifted inventor and served as the brain behind the company’s products. The third brother, Edward Mead, was a natural at marketing and is credited with the company’s early successes and expansion. When the company opened its doors, it boasted one building and fourteen employees. Nowadays, Johnson & Johnson has offices in 60 countries all over the world and employs over 130,000 people.
THE GOOD OLD DAYS Robert inadvertently provided the company with its logo by signing their first joint check in his neat script with the double “Johnson & Johnson,” along with his trademark way of looping directly from the ampersand to the second Johnson. By the following year, this iconic signature was already on the packaging of their earliest products. According to their in-house historian, this logo is one of the longest-used in the world.
Another one of Robert Johnson’s contributions to the company came to be because he was sitting next to the right guy while on vacation in Colorado. Johnson was riding on the Denver & Rio Grande railroad when he found himself sitting next to the railroad’s chief surgeon. They got talking, and soon The company’s first check, with their iconic Johnson & Johnson signature the chief surgeon mentioned that due to the nature of their work, many railroad workers got seriously injured on the job. And even worse, since they were often based far from urban areas, many of them died simply because it took too long for their injuries to be treated.

ONCE UPON A BAND-AID Earl Dickson started out as a cotton buyer for Johnson & Johnson, but then a cool idea of his propelled him up the ladder until he was vice president of the company, and eventually, on the board of directors. And a half-century after his death, he even made it to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. His invention? The humble Band-Aid. He first thought of this nifty little thing after hearing his wife complain about the nicks and small cuts she got in the kitchen. It was 1920 at the time, and there were no practical and hygienic bandage solutions around. But then Dickson had a great idea! He brought
home some of Johnson & Johnson’s antiseptic gauze and surgical tape, cut a strip of tape that was 18 inches long and 3 inches wide, stuck a strip of gauze down its middle — and voilà! He’d produced the world’s first bandage. He covered the entire thing with crinoline so it wouldn’t stick to itself, rolled it up, and from then on, all his wife had to do when she had a small injury was snip off a piece of the BandAid and apply it on the wound. Dickson’s supervisor very much liked this new product, and he told a very impressed Robert Johnson all about it. A year later, these Band-Aid’s hit the shelf, still in their original, longer form.
This was a lightbulb moment for Johnson, and he immediately thought: What if they could sell ready kits stocked with first-aid supplies? This was a novel idea at the time, and the product immediately took off. Soon the company produced two versions of this first-aid kit, one for railroad workers and another for the general population. The kit included sterile dressings, surgical tape and sutures, and very soon it was saving lives.
In 1898, when the Spanish-American War broke out, Robert Johnson, as company president, instituted a policy that was very rare at the time. If an employee would be joining the military, he announced, then his position would be waiting for him upon his return from war. Furthermore, Johnson & Johnson would continue paying their salaries while they were at the front.
Nowadays, the company still provides their employees with the same benefits, and even offers some paid time off after their return home so they can more easily acclimate to civilian life.

IN THE NEWS THE TYLENOL MURDERS
1,4-dioxane, two very harmful substances.
In 1982, seven individuals in Chicago suddenly died after swallowing Extra Strength Tylenol. Police quickly intervened, and they discovered that each of the victims owned bottles of Tylenol whose capsules had been covered in cyanide, a fatal poison. Within a week, Johnson & Johnson announced a nationwide recall, and 31 million bottles of Tylenol were pulled off the shelves. The company’s quick response was highly praised.
Under the growing pressure of an angry public, the company announced that formaldehyde gets released when one eats an apple, as well, and that 1,4-dioxane was present in such trace amounts that there was no way it could be harmful. However, at the same time, they would be putting approximately two hundred scientists to work to create the identical product — but without the harmful ingredients. This process would take two years, but Johnson & Johson was committed to seeing this project through all the way to the end, and they did. Because as the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says, “When in doubt, take it out.”
This string of Tylenol murders, as they were called, led to reforms being implemented in regard to the safe packaging of medications and the use of seals to prevent tampering.
While the Tylenol murders were not the fault of Johnson & Johnson, there were many times in the history of the company that they came under the scrutiny of consumers, environmental groups and watchdog groups like the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics due to questionable ingredients included in their products.
More recently, Johnson & Johnson took much flak after consumers learned that their popular No More Tears baby shampoo contained formaldehyde, which was released over time by a preservative named quaternium-15, and

Just a few days ago, on October 18, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily issued a recall on all 22-ounce bottles of their famed baby powder after the FDA found trace amounts of asbestos in a bottle purchased online. This was the first time asbestos was detected in Johnson’s baby powder. According to Fox News, Johnson’s other baby powder products and bottles of other sizes were not affected. While Johnson & Johnson has issued a statement saying that this product is not dangerous, the pharmaceutical company faces thousands of pending lawsuits filed by consumers who claim that the brand’s baby powder causes cancer.

This was a perfect contest for my daughter (and myself!). I appreciated it. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this incredible contest. We have seen the positive change and appreciate all the wonderful things The Boro Park View has presented so far. Keep it up! R.R.
First of all, we love The Boro Park View! My kids wait for it every week! Second, here are my kids’ finished charts. They checked off each day and waited excitedly to be entered into your contest.

"I wanted something different; I wanted something that challenged me and that pushed me further. Then this idea of climbing Mount Everest came to my mind. It stuck in my head for days. Someone told me I couldn't do it, and that really annoyed me." - Raha Moharrak First Saudi woman to conquer Mount Everest.
