Helping Your Body Do the Healing

Simply put, “holistic wellness” means not separating the symptoms from the cause.

YOUR HEALTH SUCCESS is a holistic center catering to the frum community, and Williamsburg’s best kept secret. For those suffering from chronic disease, fatigue, chronic pain, and digestive issues, walking through the YHS clinic doors is often the first step to a new, pain-free lease on life—with individualized treatments, trained practitioners, and a focus on a better way to heal.

First things first, how did a heimeshe man from Brooklyn open up a holistic wellness center? Good question! My interest in health began, unfortunately, for the same reason that many other turn to alternative medicine. I had relatives who were unwell, and traditional medicine wasn’t helping them - or at least not without terrible side effects that left their bodies weak and ill. I was sure there had to be natural wellness solutions in Hashem’s perfect world, and I set out to learn more about them. The more I learned about the body’s innate healing and natural therapies, the more my passion for holistic wellness grew! Today, I’m so privileged to share my research and all these natural benefits with so many others.

Can you explain a little more exactly what holistic wellness means? Sure! Holistic wellness is an easy phrase to misuse and misunderstand, especially if you’re interested in alternative medicine or seeking to treat an issue that isn’t responding to pills and doctor’s visits. Simply put, “holistic wellness” means not separating the symptoms from the cause. Rather than just medicating our patients, we create treatments that heal the whole person—taking into account the mental, social, physical, and nutritional causes of their pain.

That’s a lot of complicated factors, isn’t it? It sure is complicated, but so are our bodies! Holistic wellness is not a quick fix, but it works wonders for those willing to commit.

How does YHS address all those complex areas? The main problem with traditional medicine is that our doctors are too busy to listen—and we’re too busy to talk to them. At YHS, treatments typically begin with holistic coaching. When a Client approaches us with an untreatable issue, we partner them first with a Naturopathic Holistic Coach, who can develop an individualized plan and help them through all areas of their recovery journey. Together, you’ll explore everything from your stress levels to your diet to pinpoint the cause of your symptoms. Then, we’ll implement a balanced plan of diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and natural therapies to enhance your body’s natural ability to heal—and ward off any future diseases.

Wow, and this is all holistic wellness? Yes. Holistic wellness also focuses on Naturopathic Medicine, which is a key aspect of our YHS mission.

What is Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic Medicine is the theory that our bodies have an innate ability to heal themselves. By finding and removing the barriers to this self-healing—such as poor diet or unhealthy habits—naturopathic practitioners can help this process move smoothly for a faster, more effective recovery.

H O C AT T OZO N E S T E AM SAU NA

Rather than just medicating our patients, we create treatments that heal the whole person— taking into account the mental, social, physical, and nutritional causes of their pain.

I enjoy the sauna after a good workout, but something tells me YHS sauna treatment isn’t quite the same. It is actually completely different! This is more like a Super Ozone Sauna. You are getting Ozone and Carbonic Acid delivered trans-dermally, through the skin. Ozone is a super oxygen which binds to toxins and heavy metals, while Carbonic Acid calms the nervous system and regulates blood pressure. Our Hocatt Ozone Sauna provides advanced detox, oxygenation, increased circulation, immunity, energy, reduced scars, beauty/anti-aging benefits, and more! The enjoyable treatment recharges your batteries at a mitochondrial level, de-coagulates blood cells, and can be programmed to target specific diseases. It is quite simply amazing.

Are therapies only available with naturopathic coaching? So you’ll fix my diet and my lifestyle, but what about all these interesting therapies you offer? We have a variety of cutting-edge treatments and equipment that we believe can help our clients feel better and recover faster. While some of our therapies you may recognize, such as colon cleansing, our lesser-known lymphatic massage and ozone sauna therapies can be just as effective—and have just as many success stories!

Tell us about those three therapies you mentioned. Sure thing. Colon Hydrotherapy, also known as a colonic or colon cleanse, detoxifies and cleans the colon from waste that can be impacting digestion, nutrition, and energy levels. Your colon is the key to healthy bowel management, nutrient absorption, and getting rid of toxins—so if you’re struggling with poor digestion, energy levels, or skin concerns, Colon Hydrotherapy is worth looking into.

And lymphatic massage? That sounds relaxing! Many of our YHS patients think so, too! But it’s also really effective for healing fluid retention, when the body holds onto excess fluid during pregnancy, surgery recovery, and weight changes.

Not at all! Each treatment stands alone as a highly effective method of detox, rejuvenation, and will put you on a path to wellness, anti-aging and longevity. Working with a coach will help you go a bit deeper by guiding you on your wellness journey and rounding out the elements of diet, supplements and lifestyle.

Sounds amazing, you must have some great success stories! We do! Since we treat everything from serious chronic pain to persistent acne, it can be hard to choose a favorite success story. Helping a young man shed unhealthy pounds, clearing up a tough case of MRSA, and giving back a teenage girl’s clear complexion- and confidence - are just a few that come to mind. But one of the most inspiring cases had to be a woman with Chronic Lyme Disease. Her doctors told her she’d need to suffer from the fatigue and pain for a long time as she made her way through various antibiotics. She found her way here, b’h, and we got her started on a holistic treatment and diet plan - and saw a fast, happy recovery.

If you’re familiar, the lymph system is a major part of your immune system, collecting waste, flushing toxins, and maintaining antibodies to fight infections. If the lymphatic system isn’t draining properly, fluid can build up and cause swelling and ineffectiveness. Our “Pressotherapy” lymphatic drainage massage uses very light and long gentle pressure to increase the flow of the lymph nodes. It’s quite soothing to experience.

was written that there are names that we assume are Yiddish but are not (the examples brought included the names Getzel, Hertz, etc.). The article asserts that they are German names. May I mention that so are the last names Rosenberg, Spitzer, Eisenberg, etc.? In fact almost all Ashkenazi last names are of German origin… and most Yiddish first names — like Liba, Faiga, Gitta — are of German origin, too. In fact, all original Yiddish words and names, with the exception of Lashon Hakodesh words that are used in the Yiddish language, originated from Old German. As Yidden spread outward from Germany and France and settled in Eastern European countries, many Slavic words entered the Yiddish vocabulary, too. In our generation, those of us living in the English-speaking countries use many English loan words mixed into our Yiddish, and Yiddish speakers in other countries use loan words from their native language, thinking that they are speaking purely Yiddish. This is how languages evolve over time. We must realize that today we are more aware of the origins of many words and names, as we have more literature, and it is easier to attain education in general matters than centuries and millennia ago. It’s true that languages evolve and names are adopted, but regardless of origin, if they are accepted by Yehudim for centuries, then they are Jewish. If we stay true to our names that have been passed down to us throughout the generations as we do all our minhagim, then they are sheimos Yehudim. Let’s put things in context and know that our names have thousands of years of history behind them, and that they are as Jewish as we are. Chaya Libby Bornfreund

YOUR VOICE NOT ONE APARTMENT I would like to use this forum as an opportunity to voice an issue that has been bothering me for a while. I feel fortunate to enjoy your company, dear neighbor, and the company my children have in the hallway on rainy, winter afternoons, on Shabbos — and just any time! in every weather, at every hour (even in pjs!), and there’s nothing like not having to take off my kitchen apron to borrow something from a neighbor. However, this communal living is getting a little stressful for me, in that your kids feel that my apartment is just an extension of yours. Perhaps you can help. I come home after a day of work, and I want to spend a few minutes unwinding. I’d love a few minutes to hear about my kids’ day, to give them a snack, a kiss — but before I have a chance to get my bearings, there’s knocking on the door. Your kids feel so at home, that sometimes there isn’t even knocking! Besides for the lack of privacy, your four-year-old, who comes to play with my son, is usually accompanied by your two-yearold. Can you imagine what my small apartment looks like with six kids playing rambunctiously inside each afternoon? And do you really think it’s fair to have me take care of your toddler during these rushed afternoon hours? Since this has become so standard, it’s really hard for me to suddenly put my foot down. Therefore, I ask of you to please take control of your children and teach them boundaries. Please consider that you’re perhaps taking unfair advantage of a neighbor who doesn’t know how to say no. (This is an issue in itself, too, I confess.) And please, get my permission before you send them over to play. Your Neighbor Down the Hall

Parshas Lech Lecha By: Malka Schneps

This week’s parsha famously begins, “Lech lecha mei’artzecha u’mimoladitecha u’mibeis avicha…” (Bereishis 12:1). Hashem commanded Avraham Avinu to leave behind his land, his birthplace and his father’s house, and blindly set out on a journey to a destination not yet revealed. Essentially, Avraham was commanded to leave behind every external factor that had any influence on who he was, from the nature with which he was born, to his lineage, to the way he was raised, to the environment in which he’d lived until that time, and set out on a journey toward his highest self. Ultimately, Avraham would move so far beyond the boundaries that seemingly defined him that his name was changed. But why did Avraham Avinu have to take a physical journey in order to accomplish this change? Could he not have transcended himself in the place where he was born? There are two answers to this question: (1) The physical journey itself was an integral aspect of Avraham Avinu’s growth; and (2) The destination of that journey was necessary for Avraham’s growth as well. Regarding the physical journey, Hashem sent Avraham Avinu out to travel without revealing to him the final destination of the journey. The Sfas Emes explains that the uncertainty rendered by such a blind journey would remove from a person any false sense of autonomy. When a person is settled in one place and has consistency and predictability in his life and live-

48 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

lihood, he will not feel his dependency on Hashem to the same extent as a person who does not know from one day to the next where he will be or how he will earn his living. A settled person can formulate plans and goals, and seek to do his own will to a far greater extent than a person who is traveling, especially when he does not know his destination. Second, regarding the necessity of Avraham’s destination, the Ramchal explains that while Avraham Avinu was able to perceive Hashem’s existence and His Oneness while living in Ur Kasdim, which was in chutz l’aretz, Avraham would only be able to attain a deeper understanding in Eretz Yisroel, the Eretz Hakodesh. This is the deeper meaning of the lashon in Hashem’s command, “Lech lecha… el ha’aretz asher areka — Go… to the land I will show you.” Hashem is telling Avraham to go to the land where Hashem will show Avraham the deeper perspective of Hashem and Hashem’s hashgacha in this world that Avraham sought. The Ramchal further explains that Eretz Yisroel is the specific place where Avraham Avinu can gain this perspective. Avraham’s characteristic middah is chesed, and Eretz Yisroel is the place that reveals Hashem’s chesed most clearly. Thus, davka in Eretz Yisroel can Avraham be bentched, “And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, and you shall be a blessing” (Bereishis 12:2).

In order to achieve his fullest potential, it was necessary for Avraham Avinu to go on a journey in which his dependence on Hashem was felt most keenly, and travel to a place where it would be possible to attain the spiritual heights and closeness to Hashem that he sought. What does this mean for us, Avraham’s progeny? After all, Chazal say, “Maaseh avos siman l’banim — The deeds of the fathers are signs for their children.” The Sfas Emes quotes the Zohar Hakadosh that Hashem is constantly calling out the command “Lech lecha” to all people, at all times. Hashem was not speaking only to Avraham. Only Avraham heard the call. Only Avraham perceived Hashem’s command and acted upon it. Indeed, Hashem did not speak to Avraham because of Avraham’s greatness; Avraham’s greatness was that he chose to listen. Hashem is calling every one of us at all times — He is calling us right now: “Lech lecha.” Do what is right, not what is comfortable and easy. Learn Torah. Do mitzvos. Strive for closeness to Hashem. Do not feel bound by the nature with which you were born, nor the nurture with which you were raised, nor the environment in which you grew up. Every single one of us is capable of rising above these physical limitations to reach our highest potential. It is encoded within our spiritual DNA to succeed; we need only follow in our father’s footsteps.

When Blimy’s baby fell out of her highchair again, she stopped believing in miracles. Oh, not miracles exactly — but she stopped believing that one can live with hazards at home and rely on another miracle to survive them. “I’m not a businesswoman,” claims Blimy, manufacturer of the revolutionary Proctik products. “I am a mother.” A mother who cares for her children and is concerned for their safety. Blimy is blessed with a brood of active children who survived many near-misses as babies when they got up from their high chairs or tried climbing out. Mealtime was stress time: Sit the baby down, sit her down again, catch the baby dangling from the side of the chair, get that baby jumping on the high chair tray — now! Of course, she tried using a harness, but they were of no use, as her flexible kids easily squirmed their way out. Seven years ago, she’d had enough with living on the edge (of the chair). Naturally creative, she sought to come up with a solution. She had an idea, and got to work. Painstakingly, she sewed an absorbent vest — that would simultaneously serve as a

built-in bib — with side straps that would attach to the high chair. The result? She believed in miracles again. Amazingly and totally inconceivably, her little Suri remained safely strapped into her high chair, making a mess out of her sweet potato puree (which the bib happily accepted, and no, this amazing contraption does not make an angel out of your baby as of yet). Finally, a shred of calm in a busy household. Mommy is treated to the sheer luxury of ladling

soup without frantically holding on to the baby with her other arm. The now-patented Bibbysitter has gone on to become a wild success, but not without its share of travails: It only hit the shelves after being remanufactured and redone and reproduced until it finally met its manufacturer’s perfectionist standards. “At Proctik we pride ourselves on perfectionism, honesty and quality,” Blimy says with obvious maternal pride (pun intended). Perfectionism is not a popular business strategy. In fact, Proctik unabashedly defies a good few of them. Common sense in business is to manufacture products at the lowest possible cost and sell for the lowest possible price to encourage sales. The savvy businessman may also purposely use low-quality materials so that products won’t last too long, thus having consumers keep coming back for a new one. Go ahead, tell Blimy she’s not cut out for business. Proctik’s products are made of top-quality, durable material and will keep in good shape for years. Because Blimy is a mother, a mother who wants every mommy and baby to enjoy safe, practical and hassle-free daily life.

ONCE A PROCTIK, ALWAYS A PROCTIK

It takes the discerning customer to handpick Proctik from the store’s selection. The manufacturing standards determine a higher price tag than your average product. But once you have it, there’s no going back. Blimy has wondered how a product such as a Bibbysitter has never existed before. Did no one ever notice that active babies climb out of their chairs? She discovered that, indeed, similar products have been on the market before, but each disappeared after a short while. Those products involved long and convoluted straps that had to be reattached each time you sat your baby down, and by the time you almost had all those strings sorted, the baby would already have wormed his way out of them and looked for the next interesting thing on the agenda. Mommy would try this once, twice, and then give up on this several-minute pre-meal ritu-

54 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 6, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

al, figuring it would be simpler to just try to manage without it. The Bibbysitter is brilliant in both its simplicity and ingenuity. The easily washable bib-vest slips onto the baby like a dream, and with two clicks it attaches baby safely to the high chair. Baby still has some minimal wriggling space for comfort, but absolutely cannot get up from the chair. Bibbysitter attaches to high chairs, booster seats, shopping carriages and regular chairs, so you’re always covered, even on vacation when you’re not equipped with a high chair.

BIBBIES FOR ALL Once the Bibbysitter took off so well, Blimy thought about how she could service other consumers whose babies don’t necessarily rise from their chairs, but who still struggle at mealtime with baby constantly pulling off their bib and staining the second t-shirt of the day. Proctik offers the perfect bib with no strings attached, literally: The D-ring grasping the overlapping Velcro closure prevents baby from yanking off the bib, and the adjustable neckline keeps those t-shirt edges perfectly pristine. The absorbent fabric happily soaks up all drips and dribbles, while the water-resistant lining keeps the clothing underneath dry and comfy. It’s only a bib, but it’s a perfect and brilliant one at that. As with all things, one good thing leads to an-

other. Blimy was so excited with this dynamic double fabric, she knew she just had to find another use for it. And thus the ultimate kitchen apron was born. Until now mothers had to take their pick: Use a towel apron to dry your hands but wet your clothes, or use a waterproof apron that keeps you dry but doesn’t do much else. Now you can have it all. Proctik’s lightweight, incredibly comfortable, height-adjustable apron offers you a plush velour outer fabric so you can dry your hands in a jiffy, while the inner lining won’t let the water through to your clothes. Don’t be surprised if you love to patchka in your kitchen again. Or, better yet, now’s the time to finally invite your daughter to join you in the kitchen, and with Mommy’s Helper kid-size apron, she won’t protest. Like their products, the manufacturing process at Proctik involves layers of thought. You no longer have to debate the benefits of one mediocre product over the other; Proctik offers you the complete package. Discover the wonder of practical living and treat yourself with a Proctik product. You deserve it! We know you're a Proctik mother.

Boro Park Businesses Warned to Watch Out for Funny Money A counterfeiter who was arrested earlier this year for passing fake bills has returned to Boro Park, prompting Boro Park Shomrim to put out an alert to local business owners to be on the lookout for the phony bills. The warning was issued last Thursday, with Shomrim putting out a picture of a man who passed bogus $50 bills at two stores on October 30. Shomrim coordinator Motty Brauner said that one of his members recognized the man as one of a pair of counterfeiters who have frequented Boro Park and had been recently arrested by the NYPD. The man left the area before he could be apprehended by police.

NYPD Stepping Up Enforcement as Daylight Saving Time Ends With clocks falling back one hour as Daylight Saving Time came to an end, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that his annual Dusk to Darkness campaign would once again be in effect in order to increase safety on city streets. According to the New York City Department of Transportation, the number of reported collisions increases by approximately 40 percent during the fall and winter, when darkness falls earlier. The NYPD will be stepping up enforcement during the campaign, putting more officers out on the streets as darkness falls, cracking down

on speeders, those who fail to yield for pedestrians, and drunken drivers. “Fall and winter continue to be the most dangerous times of year for pedestrians and cyclists, but darker days don’t have to be darker times on our streets,” said de Blasio. “For the past few years, we’ve seen that the Dusk to Darkness campaign works, and bringing back a proven, effective tool will help us step up our Vision Zero initiative and ensure that New York City streets become even safer.”

Kosher Food Court Just One of Many Amenities As Record Breaking Shopping Center Opens in New Jersey All eyes are on East Rutherford, New Jersey where an mega-mall featuring shopping, entertainment and a kosher food court recently opened to the public, with its owners hoping to attract 40 million visitors per year. Located next to MetLife Stadium, the massive entertainment complex known as American Dream had a limited opening at the end of October. Built by a Jewish family from Minnesota, the 3 million-square-foot mall is a $5 billion project that will ultimately include an indoor ski slope, a Legoland Discovery Center, an aquarium, a Ferris wheel, a miniature golf course and over 300 stores, including Hermes, Saks Fifth Avenue, Zara and Century 21. Kosher Today reported that a kosher food court will be among the American Dream’s many dining options with pizza, fried chicken and both Israeli and Chinese cuisine to be available six days a week. The mall is a project of the Triple Five Group, a Canadian real estate firm owned by the Ghermezian family, whose portfolio includes two other massive shopping complexes — Mall of America in Minnesota and West Edmonton Mall in Alberta. American Dream president Don Ghermezian said that visitors to the mall will find it to be “the realization of their wildest dreams.” Currently, the only sections of the American Dream that are open to the public are the ice skating rink and the largest indoor theme park in the Western Hemisphere, featuring over 35 rides for children of all ages and the world’s steepest roller coaster. Triple Five plans to continue opening sections of American Dream in stages, with the first retail stores expected to open this coming spring.

CHAPTER EIGHT Recap: When Elisheva hears that Mr. Rosenblit, a lawyer, wishes to meet with “the parents of Tziporah Genendel,” she worries that something is wrong with Tzippy’s shidduch, and that perhaps the other side wants to break it off. Miri freely spends the baby gift money that her parents had given her, and Elisheva wonders whether it is her place to direct the young couple as to how to spend their money. They sat in the stylish waiting room of Rosenblit and Etzioni, Attorneys at Law, Eliyahu perusing his ever-present pocket Chumash, and Elisheva clicking the clasp of her pocketbook open and closed. It was quiet; aside for the secretary seated at the front, no one else seemed to be there. “Attorney Rosenblit will be finishing his meeting momentarily, and then he’ll be with you,” the secretary had told them two minutes earlier. “In the meantime, why don’t you sit down?” She’d placed a tray with some crystal-style disposable cups and a bottle of Coke in front of them. “Do you want a drink?” Eliyahu asked his wife. “No, I just want to know what they want from us.” Elisheva took a tissue out of her bag. Then she put it back in and took out her cell phone. Then her wallet. “It’s about a business matter,” the lawyer had told her the day before. When he’d called, Elisheva

had grabbed the phone and dashed back down to her parking lot refuge and her recent acquaintance, the cat. “A grant of sorts that the couple getting married might be able to receive.” “What’s involved in getting this grant?” she had asked, backing up from the cat and waving with one hand at the neighbor from upstairs who was crossing the parking lot to toss her garbage bag in the dumpster. A truck was backing out of the parking lot next door to the grocery that adjoined Elisheva’s building, and the lawyer’s next words had gotten swallowed by the din. “Pardon me?” Elisheva said. “Your couple meets certain criteria, and I think the grant would be suited for them,” the lawyer had said, somewhat impatiently. “I’ll be happy to explain it all when you come to my office. Is tomorrow evening at nine good for you?” Elisheva had hesitantly agreed. When she’d told Eliyahu about

it that evening, he suddenly became suspicious — far more than she herself was. “Certain criteria? What kind of criteria?” he’d asked. “He probably wants to persuade us to invest the money for the couple’s apartment in some magical real estate deal, and being that the amount of money is so minimal anyway and I don’t take these kinds of risks, he will be very disappointed. It’s a waste of our time.” “You really should be the one dealing with him, not me,” Elisheva had replied apologetically. “I just didn’t want them to call and disturb you in kollel, so I gave my number. But I can go myself if you want. I won’t sign anything without you.” But Eliyahu had shaken his head. “There’s no reason for you to waste your time or energy either. I’ll find out exactly who this Rosenblit is, and what field of law he specializes in. If it’s investments, you’ll just cancel the meeting.” That afternoon, he’d returned from kollel with some reassuring information. “I made some inquiries,” he said as he hung up his jacket. “Rosenblit is a well-known guy, and it seems he’s someone serious and reliable, not the type to be involved in shady deals. So maybe it’s worth our effort to hear what he has to say. Do I know...?” So they’d made the effort, and now they were waiting to hear what he had to say. THE KNOB on the door across from them moved, and Eliyahu closed his Chumash and slipped it into his jacket pocket. “Why only us?” he asked. “I didn’t think of it until now, Elisheva. Why only us? What about Peretz’s parents?” “Good question.” She drummed her finger on the low glass table. “If it’s something relating to Tzippy and Peretz, then his parents should really also—” “Rabbi and Mrs. Potolsky?” The lawyer emerged from his office, limping slightly, accompanied by a nattily dressed young man. “I’ll be right with you, okay?” They stood up hesitantly, and Eliyahu kept his eye on the lawyer’s retreating back as he escorted his visitor to the door. Then the lawyer turned back to them. Despite his limp, he had an authoritative air about him. He was neither young nor old. His hair was brown, with a reddish tint, though it was starting to gray. A small knitted yarmulke rested on his head. “Welcome,” he said, and motioned them into his office. They entered the wood-paneled room and sat down quietly. Rosenblit settled into his chair across from them, moved a stack of papers to the right, and leaned back. “I know you have no idea what exactly you are doing here,” he said with a smile, “but I hope I bear some good news for you today.”

Elisheva saw Eliyahu’s face cloud over even more. He hadn’t trusted the man since the minute he’d heard about a “business matter.” Well, his only experience in the business world did not generate positive memories for him. Rosenblit folded his hands. “The truth is, the fact that I’m facing only you right now is purely for comfort’s sake. If you accept my client’s proposal, you will

ninety years old. He wants to do something to commemorate his parents, Hashem yinkom damam. For nearly seventeen years, he has been working on a very specific project toward this goal. His parents’ names were,” he nodded toward them, “as perhaps you’ve guessed, Peretz and Tziporah Genendel.” The silence in the room was deafening.

Elisheva saw Eliyahu’s face cloud over even more. He hadn’t trusted the man since the minute he’d heard about a “business matter.” surely need to consult with your mechutanim, the Stockhammers. But for me personally, it is easier to work with just one side. I know that in your community it is accepted for the kallah’s parents to bear most of the financial burden, so that’s why I reached out to you.” Eliyahu was quiet, and Elisheva saw that he really wanted to say something, but was restraining himself for now. “Before I explain exactly what this is all about, I want to make sure that there is no mistake here. Let’s just clarify a few details about the engaged couple. The chassan’s first name is Peretz?” “That’s right,” Eliyahu replied. “And your daughter, the kallah, is Tziporah Genendel?” “Yes. I see that the subject of the names, especially first names, plays a significant role here,” Eliyahu said. “Why is that?” The lawyer poured a cup of water for himself from the pitcher on his desk, but didn’t take a sip from it. “My client is Alexander Korman from Australia. He has no children or family, and is a Holocaust survivor; he’s almost

Eliyahu spoke first. “Peretz and Tziporah Genendel Korman, not Stockhammer.” The lawyer smiled. “He didn’t expect to find a couple that would also share the last name. Believe me, as it is, when I took on this client, I thought the whole idea was impossibly far-fetched. Did you know that there are currently in Eretz Yisroel only 862 people with the name Peretz, of which only 259 are not married? Among other Jewish communities around the world, only one other couple was found to have these names, and they are married already, disqualifying them...” “How did he get to our children, if they have not yet gotten married and are not registered anywhere as a couple?” “He mapped out all the single men with the name Peretz and waited to see to whom they would get engaged.” “In the whole world? You said he’s nearly ninety years old.” Rosenblit smiled. “Today he’s nearly ninety. Seventeen years ago he was seventy-something, and already then, he employed several people to deal with this matter. Aside from searching of-

ficial databases, they contacted community leaders in areas with large Jewish populations and key figures in chassidic courts like Belz, Vizhnitz and Ger, who happily agreed to let him know if a couple bearing these two names became engaged.” Eliyahu fell silent and then passed a hand over his forehead. “I hear,” he said. “And maybe, before we ask any more questions about this interesting story, you can please tell me what your client from Australia is offering?” “I don’t know when you plan on making the wedding,” Rosenblit said candidly, “so I have no idea if this is even an option for you. And please, don’t be so suspicious, Rabbi Potolsky. This winter will mark ninety-one years since my client’s parents got married, and he wants this couple to get married on the same date — Rosh Chodesh Teves.” “That’s less than five weeks from now!” Elisheva gasped. “If you agree to make the wedding then, he will pay for all of the wedding expenses.” Bratislava, 1944

Anatoly Stachov returned to his office; as if in perfect synchrony, the Jew appeared a moment later. “Come in and close the door,” the Russian said, rubbing his hands together. The Jew entered. “Remind me who you are here on behalf of?” Anatoly asked. “On behalf of myself,” the Jew answered casually. He approached the desk. “But you told me at our earlier meeting...” Anatoly played with his fingers as he raised his gaze to his guest. “And the committee… what was that?” “The Agudas Israel Rescue Committee. But it really doesn’t matter, sir.” “Something does matter here. Tell your superiors that this kind of communal organizing is going to cease soon.” Anatoly lowered his voice. “This situation, where everyone does what he wants, will

be banned far sooner than you think.” “That’s quite clear to us. And until then, we are using the time as best we can.” He pulled out his wallet. “As you wish.” “I understand that you visited Lucius Jan’s orphanage this morning. Did you check out that place for me?” “Yes, yes,” Anatoly said. “I did look. Something interesting is going on there; the director and his assistant declare that there are no Jewish children in the place, but one of my friends told me that one of the boys spoke to him, and he does sound like a Jewish orphan.” “Did you try to speak to the boy?” Anatoly smiled indulgently. “I called him over, but he didn’t utter a word. The director and the assistant claim that he came to them at the age of two months, even before the war broke out, and that they know who his parents were.” “Mr. Stachov, I believe you know a lie when you see one.” The man chuckled. “Absolutely.” “So, is their story true?” “I don’t think so. But how can I prove it?” The Jewish man bit his bottom lip. “What did the boy tell your friend?” “I didn’t quite understand. But my friend got the impression that he was a Jewish boy.” His eyes were fixed on the wallet. “He tried to ask him something about his mother, if we met her.” The Jew looked at him. “Here is the sum we discussed,” he said simply, placing the bills on the desk. “I imagine that you can help us further clarify this matter, is that right?” “Certainly.” The Party member stuck the bills into his pocket. Then he glanced at the closed door. “And as I already told you, the sooner we both can be finished with this, the better.” To be continued...

IT HAD BEEN SO LONG,

SO MANY YEARS Esty Mendelowitz What is Mosdos Kever Rachel?

Fifteen years ago, at the height of the intifada, Kever Rachel was a desolate place. Much like Kever Yosef today, Kever Rachel was nearly abandoned, with few people visiting for fear of an Arab attack. Rabbi Moshe Kluger could not let this state of affairs be and sprang into He began by arranging armored buses to Kever established a Kollel of yungeleit tolearn on-site so there would be a constant kol Torah there. The slow trickle of visitors slowly turned into a stream, and today, Kever Rachel. is alive 24 hours a day with the sounds of Torah and tefillah. The day of learning begins with members of the Kollel Chatzos who delve into their studie all night long. At dawn they are joined by the Kollel Ashmuros Haboker. The daytime boasts additional kollelim as well, and today there are about 200 kollel yungeleit learning at Kever Rachel throughout every day. In addition, Mosdos Kever Rachel sponsors and im Habanim Smaicha fund, which distributes assistance to many talmidei chachamim with large families. On top of all this, Mosdos Kever Rachel sponsors busses from all heimishe neighborhoods to bring visitors safely to Kever Rachel. There’s also a coffee room that serves drinks and refreshments to mispallelim at the kever. Can you describe some of the yeshuosthat people have experienced through Mosdos Kever Rachel?

Who else but a mother worries for her children and knows exactly what they need? Mama Rachel is the mother of us all. When we encourage Torah and tefillah at her side, she will surely ask Hashem to grant us everything we need.

When donors submit their names to Mosdos Kever Rachel, the talmidei chachamim dedicate their learning and davening at Kever Rachel to the merit of the donors. We have seen so manyamazing stories of yeshuos and refuos – from people having children after many years, to seemingly hopelessly-ill people experiencing miraculous recoveries – all in the zechus of our beloved Mama Rachel. Gedolei Yisrael throughout the centuries, of every sector and stripe, have encouraged petitioners to turn to Mama Rachel in their time of need. Most recently, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, has been known to do so. Mama Rachel has always been there for us, and by being there for her, we can experience unbelievable salvation. Mosdos Kever Rachel maintains a 24-hour tefillah line. Yidden from around the globe call in constantly to connect to Mama Rachel, even though they may be far away geographically. Biden Calls Out His Democratic Opponents: “Absolutely Outrageous” to Condition Aid to Israel THE PULSE: At the annual conference of the liberal Middle East policy organization J Street, three leading Democratic presidential candidates expressed their

72 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 6, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

openness to conditioning aid to Israel. Bernie Sanders told the crowd that “I would use the leverage of $3.8 billion” to pressure Israel to change course and improve the living conditions for the Palestinians in Gaza. He also stated that part of the Israeli aid should go toward humanitarian assistance in Gaza. Senator Elizabeth Warren also appeared open to withholding American aid to Israel as a means of pressuring the Israeli government to change its policies in the West Bank. She spoke of ways “to apply pressure and create consequences for problematic (Israeli) behavior as previous Democratic and Republican presidents have done.” Her remarks come on the heels of her comments in Iowa last week, where she responded to a question regarding applying pressure on Israel over Palestinian issues by saying that “everything is on the

table.” South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg echoed a similar sentiment concerning Prime Minister Netanyahu’s pre-election pledge to annex West Bank settlements. He said that he feels a responsibility “to ensure that U.S. taxpayers’ support for Israel does not get turned into taxpayer support for a move like annexation.” However, when a Wall Street Journal reporter asked leading Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden about the comments of his Democratic rivals, he was unequivocal in his condemnation of such policy. He said, “The idea that we would draw military assistance from Israel, on the condition that they change a specific policy, I find to be absolutely outrageous,” and “I would not condition it, and I think it’s a gigantic mistake. And I hope some of my candidates who are running with me for the nomination; I hope they misspoke, or they were taken out of context.” THE IMPACT: The policy face-off between Sanders,

Warren and Buttigieg on one side and Biden on the other exposes the deep rift in the Democratic Party between its progressive and centrist elements. Biden has a long record of support for Israel. He has referred to himself as a “Zionist” and credits his father for teaching him about the importance of supporting Israel. In remarks he made at Tel Aviv University and later repeated at the 2011 Beth Yehuda Dinner in Detroit, he said that “American support for Israel is not just an act of friendship; it’s an act of fundamental national self-interest on the part of the United States, a key component of our broader efforts to secure this region and the wider world as well as secure our own security.” Biden represents the centrist wing of the Democratic Party, which sees support for Israel as a fundamental principle despite any policy differences that they may have with the country. However, the progressive wing of the party has been on the ascendancy over the past few years. Many of progressive persuasion tend to be sympathetic to the Palestinian view and are often hostile to Israeli positions. They also see Israel under Netanyahu’s leadership as acting overtly political in support of Republican candidates and positions. This has led to an erosion of once-broad public support for Israel among all leading presidential candidates.

Pelosi Warns That Progressive Policies May Cost the Democrats the Election THE PULSE: In an interview with Bloomberg News, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued a warning to

Democratic candidates. She said that progressive policies might serve to fire up the base and may help a candidate win a primary, but they will not play well in a general election. “What works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan.” She criticized expensive Medicare for All policies currently being promoted by some candidates and also those who advocate for the implementation of the Green New Deal. Pelosi encouraged candidates to focus on workers’ rights and sharing prosperity. She said that candidates should focus on shoring up Obamacare and a pay-as-you-go health system. “We cannot just keep increasing the debt,” she said. THE IMPACT: Pelosi is seeking to moderate Democratic policies before the general election. She is sincerely concerned that even though President Donald Trump has a negative approval rating, many Americans will choose to vote for him over a progressive Democratic candidate. She fears that extreme liberal positions will further alienate the working-class voters whom Trump won in 2016. However, those on the other side of the argument believe that Pelosi’s approach of appealing to the political center is out-of-date. They believe that President Trump has shown that the path to victory lies in appealing to the base. A fired-up and energetic core is the key for voter turnout, and they believe that high turnout will result in victory in tightly fought elections in swing states throughout America.

O’Rourke Withdraws From Presidential Race THE PULSE: Presidential Candidate Beto O’Rourke announced that he is withdrawing his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. O’Rourke is a former congressman who rose to prominence in his tightly fought 2014 Senate race against Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). He was considered a rising star in the Democratic party and a serious contender for the Democratic nomination. He was outspoken in his support for strict gun control measures. Ultimately, his campaign suffered from lack of organization, and he could not meet his fundraising goals. THE IMPACT: O’Rourke’s withdrawal is the first withdrawal of a candidate once considered to be among the top tier of Democratic candidates. It is an indication that the field is tightening and coalescing around the top three candidates: Biden, Warren and Sanders. Other candidates seeking a breakout moment will need to focus their energies on Iowa or New Hampshire and hope for an early primary surprise or be eclipsed by the leading candidates in the field.

IF YOU ARE A BORO PARK NATIVE, the statistical probability runs high that you took your first breaths in the Maimonides maternity wing. For a number of years running, Maimonides topped New York State records as the hospital with the most babies born there. Last year they lost their lead — even though they clocked in at their all-time-high with 8,389 births! (They were beat out by Long Island Jewish Medical Center — where 9,078 babies were born.) Situated right in the heart of Boro Park, on an over-two-square-block radius, Maimonides Medical Center is the largest hospital in all of Brooklyn, with Brooklyn’s only pediatric trauma center, and also ranks among the top 1 percent of hospitals in the U.S. for their expertise in cardiac care. Where did this behemoth of a medical center originate from? Their official descriptor is rather bland, de-

fining Maimonides Medical Center as a “non-profit, non-sectarian hospital located in Borough Park, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.” Their fuller history is a lot more interesting than that.

WAY BACK WHEN The Maimonides Medical institution is the result of the merging of two smaller hospitals in 1947 — Beth Moses Hospital and United Israel Zion Hospital, the latter of which formed in 1920 when two even smaller hospitals, Israel Hospital and Zion Hospital, merged. The Israel Zion cornerstone is still in place at 10th Avenue and 48th Street — where the Maimonides Medical Center is currently located.

DISPENSARIES Prior to the formation of United Israel Zion Hospital, back in 1911, the area had several small “dispensaries.” Dispensaries at the time served as ad hoc medical centers, offering (very) basic medical care and prescription medication, often at no cost to the poor recipients. Maimonides Medical Center can trace its history back to one of the oldest dispensaries in the

area: the New Utrecht Dispensary, located on 37th street near 12th Avenue, which was run by a team of local Jewish directors (see image above). It is interesting to note that the initial formation of these “Jewish” hospitals were the result of anti-Semitism. Not to the patients, but to the medical students desiring to practice their craft. In the early 1900s, most hospitals were reticent about hiring any Jewish medical students, and so, these Jewish medical centers came about. At present, it is rather sad that most of these hospitals claim to be “non-sectarian,” even as they carry their Jewish names proudly.

Despite being non-sectarian, mezuzahs grace most doorways in the Maimonides Medical Center. In 2013, some people attempted to make a fuss about this precious artifact that is often kissed upon passing the doorways. The argument was that it was dangerous to have one’s fingertips touch one’s lips after being pressed against the mezuzah. There was fear that the little metal cases were a potential breeding ground for germs. Testing revealed that the fear was unfounded as there were no more germs on the mezuzahs than on any other surface in the hospital, and absolutely no diseases were being passed on to the pious visitor with Hashem on his mind. It turns out that Maimonides cleverly encases their mezuzahs in metal, and the janitorial staff is careful to clean it regularly — with the same antiseptic disinfectants it uses for its general doorframe. May the mezuzahs continue to serve the purpose for which they were designed and offer protection to all who pass their doors.

MAIMONIDES Those even moderately familiar with Jewish history will immediately recognize the luminous giant that this institution is named after. The Rambam, Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon (1135–1204), was not only a world-renowned leader in Torah and a respected authority in the Jewish world; he served as a doctor, philosopher and scientist as well.

88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 6, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

In 1148, his family fled Cordova (first to Eretz Yisroel, before resettling in Egypt). He achieved incredible heights in Torah, and after more travails than most encounter in a lifetime — and the death of his younger brother who was in charge of his assets — financial difficulties propelled him to start practicing medicine as a livelihood. At 36 years of age, he began serving as a physician in the court of Sultan Saladin. Already in his day, he wrote extensively and accurately about pneumonia, asthma, diabetes, hepatitis and many other misunderstood ailments that he recognized in his patients. His medical and general knowledge greatly impressed the Arab and Christian worlds, and he counted many nobles and others of the gentile populace among his patients. Even to this day, the very mention of the name Maimonides is immediately associated with medical expertise and excellence. As Fred Rosner, a professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, wrote, “His legacy as a physician, theologian, philosopher and astronomer lives on for posterity. He was a physician of whom modern medicine would be proud if he were alive today.”

Centrally located in Boro Park, Maimonides naturally has a large Jewish clientele. On the other side of the 10th Avenue divide, there is a growing Chinese population. In an effort to assist the ever-growing diversity in their patients, Maimonides has actively recruited multilingual physicians, nurses and staff, and have also hired interpreters for 67(!) languages. In spite of their struggle to keep up with the exorbitant demand, Maimonides consistently ranks among the best hospitals in the nation with overall quality outcomes. And when it comes to our hospitals, isn’t that what truly matters?

To an impressive extent, Maimonides Medical Center has lived up to its name in some of their remarkable innovations, particularly in regard to advances in cardiac treatment. In 1961, the very first commercial pacemaker was developed in the Maimonides Research Laboratory. Nine years later, the same lab was co-developer of the intra-aortic balloon pump. In 1966, the cardiology team at Maimonides performed the first implantation of a partial mechanical heart, and just one year later, the second human heart transplant in the world (and the first in the U.S.!) was performed at Maimonides by Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz. There were several other impressive achievements claimed by Maimonides Hospital, some of which weren’t even cardiac in nature. In 2001, our very own Maimonides Medical Center was the first to perform robotic surgery on their pediatric patients.

Though the information contained in this article was so graciously provided by Rabbi Kahan, the liaison at an upstate hospital, much of the information pertains to medical situations that could happen anywhere. We hope you find the information contained within helpful, no matter where you are located.

The sounds of suffering combined with the pungent smell of antiseptic and the ever-present beep-beepbeep of machinery are enough to make most people pick up their feet and flee the hospital at the first opportunity — but not so Rabbi Yisroel Kahan. For him, a day in the hospital is just another day doing what he loves: helping Yidden when they need it most. “You know what they say, ‘Find work you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’?” Rabbi Kahan asks me. “Well, that’s what happened with me.” What started out nearly 19 years ago as a spare-time mitzvah evolved into a full-time occupation. Initially, Rabbi Kahan volunteered through Bikur Cholim at Westchester Medical Center, visiting patients, stocking food cabinets and comforting families. “I was still in kollel at the time, but this was my special mitzvah,” he tells me. “I was at the hospital whenever I had the chance.” But it was his being offered a job as the administrator of Monsey Health Center that really kickstarted Rabbi Kahan’s career in health care. “I began dealing with doctors and emergencies, and became busy ensuring patients were well taken care of.” Over time, Rabbi Kahan became a familiar face in many New York–area hospitals, though Rockland and Westchester County hospitals received the bulk of his attention. “One day, Good Sam Hospital offered me the job as an official liaison to the frum com-

munity. They wanted someone who could serve as a bridge between Orthodox patients and the medical staff, and to help the hospital understand the needs of the frum patient. I was already doing that, so I said, ‘Why not? I’m here anyway! Why not get paid for it?’” Rabbi Kahan explains that the hospital tries to go out of its way to accommodate the heimishe population to the greatest extent possible. As one example, he tells me that while the new mother-and-baby wing was being constructed, the engineers wired the unit with motion sensors in the bathrooms in order to help the Yidden avoid the issue of flipping switches on Shabbos and yom tov… “When I was given a tour of the new unit, I had to explain to them that motion sensors were very problematic… They then rewired the whole unit and put in regular switches. It was a well-intentioned effort to make things more comfortable for us.” It’s not only an example of Good Sam’s accommodation of the frum population; it’s also an example of Rabbi Kahan’s role as a liaison. He’s there to serve in any manner that helps Orthodox patients have the easiest time in a

place where hardship abounds. But his work isn’t just limited to the frum community. “In my other role as a liaison to the local government, I’ve made many contacts with people outside of the frum community. Plenty of nonJewish acquaintances have contacted me for guidance while in the hospital. If there’s someone in need and I have the ability, I’m more than happy to help.”

OVERCOMING THE COMMUNICATION GAP

cause medical procedures and health conditions can be difficult to understand, and even slight nuances can result in variances in guidance, it is important that shailos be presented correctly. When needed, Rabbi Kahan will help families ask those shailos, even setting them up with knowledgeable poskim should their own rav be unfamiliar with the specifics of the condition or procedure. “A family with an extremely sick baby was once told by the doctors that they should be in touch with their rav regarding what to do should the baby take a turn for the worst. They called a rav and was told that they should wait until the numbers started dropping and then call him back for guidance. When they hung up and relayed the message to the doctor, he looked at me in surprise. This advice showed a lack of medical understanding, because babies fight very hard until the last minute, and they might appear to be hanging on, but then in a second things can spiral out of control. There’d be no time to call for a psak then. The family needed to be prepared. “I asked the family if I could call a rav wellversed in these situations and we got him on the line. He ended up speaking with the doctor and giving his psak. When he hung up, the doctor turned to me and asked where the rabbi had

It may be a local doctor, a family member, Hatzolah, a social worker, a chaplain or even a concerned nurse who contacts Rabbi Kahan to let him know someone in the hospital could use his services. Though Rabbi Kahan works with patients in all units of the hospital, he usually spends most of his time in the emergency room or ICU, where patients are most desperate for his help. “Sometimes family members just need a support person there to help them make decisions about care, to understand the choices available. That can involve translating or explaining complicated medical terminology in plain language. There are also times when a patient will refuse life-saving or otherwise important treatment because of fear and lack THE ANTI-DUMPING ACT of information. In these Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act cases, I’ll explain to them (EMTALA), a hospital with the capability to treat a person the procedure or tell them with an unstable medical condition, which was not able to about the attending physician’s history. Many times be correctly treated at the original hospital, is required to that same doctor also has accept a transfer of a patient capable of travel, regardless privileges in larger hospiof their ability to pay. This law ensures that patients with tals and performs the same Medicaid or no insurance aren’t dumped at hospitals that procedures there. That’s aren’t equipped to care for them. information that can help patients feel much more comfortable. There are also times when a patient needs to be transferred to a facility with more advanced treatments and equipment, and I’ll help them facilitate the transfer.” Oftentimes shailos come up during the course of a hospitalization, and be-

THE WAITING GAME gone to medical school, as he was so knowledgeable.” Sadly, tragic stories are not uncommon in any hospital setting, but at least in Good Sam, there’s a frum liaison who helps families navigate the tempest. “I’m here to help them cross the choppy waters,” Rabbi Kahan tells me.

FINDING THE BEST FIT “I sometimes get calls from family members or doctors who explain a situation and ask which hospital is best for a patient to be sent to. It’s important to understand that both small and large hospitals have benefits. “University hospitals such as Columbia, Mt. Sinai, Westchester, etc., certainly have more advanced care in regard to machinery, and they have burn units, for instance, which smaller, local hospitals don’t have. They’re equipped to handle much sicker patients. But for more standard issues, the quality of relationship with doctors is better at local hospitals.” Rabbi Kahan tells me that one of the benefits of a community hospital is that one’s primary care physician will have privileges that enable him to call the shots and monitor the treatments the entire time. “Your local doctor will have his hand in the system. He’ll coordinate

96 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

“Nobody comes to the emergency room for a Chol Hamoed trip” Rabbi Kahan tells me. “Everyone is anxious to get out and on with their lives. It’s hard to sit and wait, especially in this instant gratification generation.” Perhaps understanding how the ER operates can help people tolerate what seems to be a slow-moving environment. The first thing to understand, he tells me, is that each patient entering the emergency room is evaluated at triage to determine the severity of their condition. That, combined with the occupancy of the ER and the severity of other patients’ conditions, determines wait time. “A sprained ankle isn’t going to be of the same priority as someone having difficulty breathing. It’s not always first come, first served. Realize that people may have come in with more serious or life-threatening conditions.” It’s also important to understand that even when nothing seems to be happening once one has already entered the treatment area, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes. “Sometimes I will receive a call in which someone says, ‘I’m waiting for over an hour and nothing is happening.’ What they don’t know is that the doctor is waiting for the blood results to come back before taking the next step. For instance, if a doctor wants to order a CT scan with contrast, he’ll first check the health of the kidneys with a blood test to ensure that the body can tolerate the contrast. So while the patient may think that nothing is being done, there are actually things happening behind the scenes. “If a nurse says that results will be available in about 45 minutes, give them some extra time before you approach and ask for results… It’s important to be a mentch and not, chas v’shalom, to make a chillul Hashem. There was once someone who came into the emergency room and was frustrated with the wait. Within a half hour, he had contacted the CEO of the hospital and sent him a nasty letter! To make things worse, the person who did this was an EMT who should have known better. It created such a bad impression of frum Yidden. “Of course, if there is any concern that a patient is in danger, absolutely, go ahead and get attention. Don’t sit by idly. You must advocate for yourself and your loved ones when needed. There is a time and place for patience, and the moment of an emergency is not one... But if there is no danger to life, just wait. Also know that it’s okay to ask questions and get explanations, but not every family member has to ask the nurse for updates. Choose one representative, and stay in your room until approached. Don’t hound the nurse. She has a job to do and other patients to treat.”

surgery. But if an adult walks into a university hospital for appendicitis, it’s as if they’re walking in with a big sign that says: ‘Please let your residents practice on me!’ Because it’s a relatively simple surgery; it’s one of the first surgeries that residents do.” It’s important to evaluate the nature of a condition when choosing which hospital will provide care. But what if, after being admitted to a hospital, the condition is recognized as needing a different type or level of care? That’s where transfers come in. But even before a transfer is put into motion, Rabbi Kahan suggests considering a consult between the hospital’s doctors and specialists elsewhere. “There are times that we can avoid the physical and monetary burdens that come with a transport by having local doctors consult with top specialists nationwide. When it comes to infection, for instance, sometimes it’s just a matter of getting the right treatment plan, but the treatment itself can be administered in the original location without physically stressing the patient.”

FROM ONE HOSPITAL TO ANOTHER During an emergency every second counts, and oftentimes, even people in complicated, extreme conditions will be taken to a local hospital to be stabilized before being sent to a medical center better equipped for intensive care. “Not a week goes by that I don’t transfer patients,” Rabbi Kahan tells me. “We’re not just talking about local transfers; patients can be sent to Johns Hopkins, Cleveland… to whichever hospital is best equipped to handle a patient’s specific needs.” To set up an interfacility transfer, the doctors at the initial hospital contact the transfer center

at the potential receiving hospital to discuss the case. Once deemed an appropriate transfer, the logistics planning can proceed. When it comes to cases of emergency, no prior authorization is required with insurance companies, but a request for a non-emergency transfer must first receive insurance approval, which may take several days. Once all is approved, transportation must be arranged and a bed made available. Some hospitals, such as Cleveland Clinic, have their own airplane and medical crew for transporting patients. Other hospitals will say, “Send us the patient,” and if insurance approves the transfer, the first hospital will arrange transport; otherwise the family will need to contact a private company such as Vital One to get the patient safely to their destination. Because transfers can be complicated and stressful on top of an already nerve-wracking situation, Rabbi Kahan is there for families, helping them through the ordeal. “Whether a patient needs a simple procedure or intense medical intervention, I consider it my honor to help them receive the best, most dignified treatment available. And watching people be helped? That’s the most rewarding part of my job; seeing people who came in broken, extremely sick, or having suffered a severe trauma getting back on their feet. It’s a bracha to watch the Eibishter heal these people.” And it’s a bracha for us — those who use Good Sam hospital — to have Rabbi Kahan, a shliach of help and healing, there when we need him! I’ll never forget the day an unanchored food closet fell on my four-year-old, knocking her over and coming very close to causing untold harm. Terror ran through me when I saw her little body pinned under the heavy closet, and I could do little more than screech for my older children to summon our next-door neighbor while I bumbled about, trying to correctly punch in Hatzolah’s phone number. Trembling from head to toe, my wits were not about me, but eventually I reached the dispatcher and help was on the way.

B B’chasdei Hashem, Hatzolah pronounced my daughter unharmed. And while she was being examined, my dear neighbor quietly snuck into the kitchen and began cleaning up the spilled oil, sugar and other foodstuffs that were spread far and wide across the floor. Once Hatzolah left, she bundled up my children and sent them to her house, telling me to rest a while to regain my shattered equilibrium. Such neighbors are a gift from Heaven, and irreplaceable. Blessed with a sixth sense of exactly what to do and when, these types of people are able to comfort and help in ways that may not be obvious to every bystander. Unfortunately, not everyone has such neighbors. When an ambulance pulled up in front of my friend’s house late one afternoon, the neighborhood children gathered around for the show. It was Erev Shabbos and everyone was home. Living on a busy block means that privacy is hoped for, but not always a given. However, even people living on a very busy block should respect the dignity of persons undergoing an emergency. In this case, though, that didn’t happen. Not only did children gather around to see the action; parents, too, stood gawking. Feeling exploited, my friend’s children

106 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 6, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

began to cry — their tears no longer solely for their dear brother, who was being rushed to the hospital, but also for the shame of being given public attention they’d never asked for. To make matters worse, a particularly rambunctious boy climbed onto the ambulance and opened the door to get a better view of what was happening inside... Such poor conduct is rare, but great behavior can’t be expected to happen naturally. Our children (and the adults among us for whom that sixth sense of proper emergency decorum is lacking) need to be trained how to react when emergencies occur. Here are some tips to review with your children (and to keep in mind yourself!). STAY OUT OF THE WAY OF ACTION Being rachmanim bnei rachmanim means that we truly care about what is happening to the people around us — causing us to naturally stop, look, question and feel concern when we see an ambulance pull up. But how do we avoid becoming gawkers and actually prove ourselves valuable in an emergency? The first thing to remember is that paramedics need room to enter and exit a house, as well as space to park their vehicles. Never loiter around a home where an emergency is happening, and do gather together any bystanders (especially children) and herd them further down the block, away from the site of action. DIGNITY MATTERS! Emergencies often involve people losing control over their bodily functions or having the patient appear in public dressed in a manner they’d not like others to

NEIGHBORLY CARE DONE RIGHT “My father was rushed to the hospital one Erev Rosh Hashanah. A number of neighbors hung around outside watching, wringing hands, whispering... you know the drill. “One neighbor ran home and came back with all of the simanim for us. While she couldn’t help medically, she certainly helped us get through a difficult time.” -A.S.

“About 20 years ago, I was making chocolate liqueur in my kitchen when the alcohol caught fire. After stopping, dropping and rolling until the flames on my clothes were extinguished, I was still badly burned and was taken to hospital. My nextdoor neighbor very kindly watched my four small children, including a six-week-old baby, overnight — despite having one-year-old twins of her own! -M.N.

“One Erev Yom Kippur, I had an acute anaphylactic reaction and was hospitalized. My one-year-old also had an allergy to the same food and had also eaten it, so she was taken to the hospital as well, but released once it was determined she was safe. We were stuck in the trauma department

with a baby and only a short time to the zman. My husband called a rebbi he remained close to throughout the years and asked him to drive my daughter to a neighbor’s house where she would spend Yom Kippur. His rebbi dropped everything and drove over to pick her up and drop her off. And the neighbor? That’s the same amazing neighbor mentioned all throughout this article! Mi k’amcha Yisroel!” -Ruchy Reese

“My husband had a stroke almost a year ago early one Shabbos morning. We were expecting three girls for the seudah. On the way down to wait with the medics for the ambulance (every second counts during a stroke), I knocked on the door of a neighbor, who I knew is an early riser. I explained that we had to go to the hospital and asked if they could please take care of our guests. She wasn’t able to, and it was too early to knock on other neighbors’ doors, so I asked the medic if he could possibly get a message to the girls that they should find another place to eat the seudah. Instead, he came back to our apartment after davening, stood outside and waited for the girls to come... and took them to his house for the meal!” -D.S.

witness. Moreover, simply having an emergency removes many aspects of privacy from a person, alerting all the neighbors to a situation at hand. When people stand around, waiting for the ill person to emerge from the house, dignity is compromised in a significant way. If possible, not only herd bystanders down the block, but also encourage them to completely disperse. Certainly don’t give in to the desire to watch the goings-on!

down, there are still many ways neighbors can help. Children may need to be delivered to playgroup, picked up from school, fed supper or bathed. Can you offer to help in any way? So, too, homework help is often appreciated. Sometimes, even the simple act of styling a child’s hair in the morning so they look mentchlich can be a chesed of tremendous proportions. I know this, because when I once stayed in the hospital with a sick baby, my own amazing neighbor made sure my daughter’s hair was neatly pulled back every morning as my husband found making a ponytail difficult.

NOT A TOPIC OF CONVERSATION Patients are not a topic of conversation; they are people. And people usually prefer not to be spoken about. If you are concerned about a neighbor, pull out a Tehillim and encourage others to do the same. Don’t stand around talking about the patient! Yes, it’s hard to not be “in the know,” but that doesn’t make it right to discuss other people.

NEVER BE NOSY! Just because a patient has been released from the hospital doesn’t mean that the situation has been instantly resolved. It also doesn’t mean that the medical issues are up for discussion. One friend with a medically fragile child was approached by a neighbor and asked if her child was “all better” after returning home from the hospital. Flabbergasted, my friend didn’t know how to respond. Even though the immediate issue at hand had been calmed, there were still many more to contend with. If you are not a close confidante, please don’t pretend you are. Send your warm wishes for smooth sailing, but don’t try to get too personal.

OFFER SPECIFICS Do you have something valuable to offer a family in their time of need that the paramedics won’t be covering? (See sidebar for stories of how others have done this.) Only if you know that your offer will be appreciated at that specific moment should you consider popping over. Otherwise, give wide berth to the area. COLLECT THE KIDS If the family having an emergency has young children at home, and you have a close, trusting relationship with the family, do poke your head in and gather the children together, offering to take them to your home until their family either picks them up or makes plans for their care. This is an invaluable service you can offer! Alternatively, offer to take the children to a relative’s home. The knowledge that their children are in a safe place is the greatest gift you can give a family during an emergency. ACTS OF SERVICE Caring neighbors are a wonderful asset, and there is much they can do to show their concern over a family’s travails. Once the hectic minute-by-minute panic of an emergency has calmed

A WARM WELCOME HOME There’s nothing like coming home to a hot supper after a stay in the hospital. An especially close neighbor can find out when the patient and/or caregivers are returning home and make sure a meal is waiting for them. If one person can’t commit to making a full supper for the family, divide the job among the neighbors, and together, prepare a hot meal to calm the frazzled nerves of the people you care about.

The bystanders watched in horror as three Hatzolah volunteers hoisted the car midair while two others crawled underneath and gingerly extracted a gangly teenage girl. The feelings of shock only intensified as the teenager attempted to walk away from the scene. It took ten minutes of arguing and extreme powers of persuasion until the Hatzolah members successfully cajoled the teen into the waiting ambulance, so that she could be properly examined for potential internal injuries. It took a full 30 minutes for the tension to thaw. Only then did the crowd disperse. ------------------------It was on a Tuesday many years prior that Avi Simons* had spotted the poster on which Hatzolah of Boro Park was showcasing their fundraising endeavor of the year. Sponsor a Day! Choose a meaningful date and sponsor Hatzolah’s activities for 24 hours. Avi went on to read the campaign details. Hatzolah’s annual budget had been divided into 365 segments. The daily expense of running Hatzolah’s activities amounted to $3,600. Hatzolah was now soliciting the generosity of the Boro Park residents to claim a day of significance and shoulder the expenses of the day. The idea appealed to Avi, and choosing a date was a no-brainer. His daughter Ruchele was getting married on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. It was just a matter of date availability. Not one to procrastinate, Avi was on the phone within minutes arranging the credit card details with a campaign rep. Let this be a zechus for the couple, he thought. In the merit of my donation, may they build a bayis ne’eman b’Yisroel.

Done deal. Avi didn’t give the matter much thought until the following year, same time. When he saw the number of Hatzolah on his caller ID, his heart skipped the proverbial beat. After assuring him that all was okay, the woman on the other end asked him if he’d like to renew his sponsorship of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. Avi wasn’t sure. The wedding was all but a distant memory, albeit a joyous one. He had signed up as a zechus for the couple’s impending wedding. Maybe this year the right thing would be to switch to a different date, perhaps a yahrtzeit or a birthday? The hesitation lingered for a few moments, and then, on a whim, he decided to stick to his date l’kavod the couple’s upcoming anniversary. His card was charged. The years came and went. Every year, he would get the perfunctory call, hesitate about the date, and subsequently renew the charge for Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. ------------------------The three teenage girls chatting at a 13th Avenue storefront were oblivious to the police chase gaining momentum in the not-too-faroff distance. It was a typical cops and robbers scenario: a police car chasing an alleged perpetrator through

the crowded streets of Boro Park. As the car marked for chase picked up speed, so did the patrol car. They bumped and swerved, missing all the human obstacles by mere centimeters. Until the miss turned into a hit. BAM! It was on 13th Avenue and 52nd Street that the police car lost control and jumped the curb near three innocent pedestrians, pinning one underneath its metal chassis. Chaos erupted. Emergency vehicles. Crime tape. Crowds. The whole nine yards. Amid all the confusion a Hatzolah member shrieked, “She’s under the car. Hoist!” The vehicle was hoisted. And there, under the massive hunk of steel, lay Devorah Simons. ------------------------Still in a trance of astonishment, Avi Simons allowed himself to be directed to the curtained cubicle in the ER, where Devorah was being examined. “She’s good to go,” the attending doctor informed him. “Are you sure?” Avi struggled to collect his thoughts, which were playing ping-pong in tune to his rapidly beating heart. “She was pinned under a vehicle!” “Sir, you can take a look at the tests.” The doctor handed him the documents along with the discharge papers. “Squeaky clean.” Avi stared blankly at the documents in his hands. None of the test results meant anything to him. He closed his eyes as he fervently whispered, “Thank You, Hashem.” And he instantly recalled that he had in fact already recited Hallel that day. Of course, he had. It was Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan — Ruchele’s anniversary.

DRESSED FOR THE JOB Originally established for both hygiene and identification, the traditional nurse’s uniform consisted of a long-sleeved white dress, an apron and a cap. Ironically, although the uniform was intended to protect against fever and infection, nurses in those times wore neither masks nor gloves!

During World War II, revisions to the uniform were made in an effort to scrimp on material. The cap, which was mainly used to cover the hair, was next to go, since newer nursing caps were more of a fashion statement and were quite a hindrance with their tendency to fall off nurses’ heads at inopportune times.

Since 1990, countries including Western Europe and North America have moved toward the modern alternative of scrub tunics, with the scrub dress worn in emergency and operating rooms. Scrubs are disliked by many, who argue that nurses are no longer recognizable and are perceived by patients as cleaners or surgeons, but they are said to be a lot simpler for hospitals to sanitize.

The UK’s version of nurse uniforms remains traditional and includes dark blue trousers and a tunic-style top, designed to prevent crossinfection. They also wear a dress in the same color as the tunic, its color representing the amount of years they’ve trained for. And although it used to be common for male nurses to wear white tunics, today they wear shades of blue or dark green — colors that signify authority to the general public.

116 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

THE RED CROSS The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton — famous for her energetic nursing efforts during the Civil War — as a disaster relief and nurse training agency. Today, they have evolved into an organization that continues to assist both U.S. soldiers and families during natural disasters, provides training courses in both first aid and swimming to the public, and is responsible for over 40 percent of blood donations in the country!

UNADORNED? Ever wonder why nurses often lack a basic watch or bracelet? Nurses are advised to refrain from wearing hand jewelry to prevent distraction or their getting caught on patients’ skin during care. That is also the reasoning behind the fob (pendant) watches parents of young nurses traditionally gift their children when they move away from home for their residency.

By: Libby Kasten

NURSING THROUGHOUT HISTORY Early nurses devotedly cared for patients without any formal training, and nursing was one of the only professions dominated by women. In 1883, the first woman graduated from a Canadian medical school, and only later, during the late 1900s, was nursing professionalized with the establishment of training schools in the U.S. and Japan. Unbelievably, between 1873 and 1910, in just 37 years, the number of hospitals worldwide increased from 149 to 4,400! As the public trusted hospitals more and facilities were now equipped to professionally handle intensive health issues, the amount of active graduate nurses grew from 51,000 to 375,000 (1910 to 1940), and later to 700,000 (1970)! Many of the nurses at this time provided care free of charge, in exchange for the hands-on training they received.

WEEKLY Wordyfor kids Look at the word at the bottom of the ladder and then try to figure out what the next word can be. In each rung of the ladder, only change one letter of the previous word. Keep in mind that although one letter is different in each word, the positions of the letters do not change. Hint: If you get stuck, remember that the game, like a ladder, can be completed in either direction.
