(Re: Honing in on Homework, Issue 99) Thank you for your back-to-school issues and the variety of topics you featured. The article about homework, especially, piqued our interest. We were discussing the pointers around the dinner table when my kids realized that one crucial aspect was missing: The article included input from mothers, from teachers and from principals, but what about the students, who are actually doing all that work every day? Shouldn’t we be hearing their point of view, too? A Parent of Pupils

THE DRESS OF MESORAH

(Re: In Plaids, Pinstripes and Pleats, Issue 98) Please note one omission in your beautiful depiction of all Boro Park girls’ school uniforms. Tomer Devorah, one of the oldest Boro Park girls schools, proudly requires of their girls to wear what their venerable principal Rebbetzin Chana Davis, shetichye (now of Yerushalayim), once described at a meeting convened to discuss the subject of uniforms: “We have a mesorah of tznius that goes all the way back to Matan Torah. We want our girls to learn and practice what tznius’dig dress is all about. Why should we copy the (l’havdil) Catholic schools with their various plaids when we have our own, more precious uniform?” Shira Weiss

A SCHOOL NOT FEATURED

(Re: In Plaids, Pinstripes and Pleats, Issue 98) Thank you so much for an informative and well-designed weekly magazine. I especially enjoyed the article and pictorial on school uniforms. I’d like to point out, however, that Bais Shifra Rachmistrivka, a chassidish school of the highest caliber, was omitted. I am including a picture of their school uniform. C.G., A Proud Parent

APPRECIATION AWARENESS

(Schmoozing With the Secretaries, Issue 98) Orientation day this year found me in my daughters’ school, meeting new teachers, parents and students and getting my little preschooler reacquainted with school routine. On the way out, the secretary handed me some papers and bus routes, and she got a resounding thank you from this mother, who’d just read

Your one stop shop for your complete layette

As I’m going about doing my yom tov shopping and meeting half of the community (and then some), I’m realizing that some shops I’ve frequented in the past I haven’t even stepped foot into this season, while at others I’ve left a large chunk of my earnings. And as I stopped to think about it, I realized that I started avoiding some places where I, as a customer, have been treated with annoyance, impatience or a general negative attitude. So I just want to send this reminder to store owners and employees: Your customer service is a huge part of the deal to many of us. If I have to wait endlessly only to be snapped at impatiently, or if those on the floor are rude, pushy, just not friendly, or make me feel like I’m bothering them, I really do think twice about shopping in that store again. Instead I’ll choose a place where the salespeople smile, are eager to help me, seem to enjoy their job and people in general, and appear to know that part and parcel of manning a successful store is enabling people to find stuff in the styles and sizes they seek. Even during this busy season when everyone and their first cousin is out on the streets, they appreciate that we are handing over our hardearned money and we want to feel like it’s money well spent. So this letter is a thank you to all those amazing store owners and salespeople who service us so graciously — and there are so many of you! — and make the shopping experience as enjoyable as possible. And it is also a gentle reminder to the others, who are understandably overwhelmed during this busy season, to pay attention to how they treat their customers. G.D.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We regret to inform you that a picture of sheimos was inadvertently included in last week’s publication. The picture appears on page 133. Please treat the page with proper respect. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

You and Me

YOM KIPPUR Seeing the Good

“Vayomer Hashem salachti kidvarecha” (Bamidbar 14:20). With loud voices and depth of feeling, these words reverberate three times throughout the walls of shul on Yom Kippur night. “I have forgiven them according to your word.” This promise of forgiveness was uttered by Hakadosh Baruch Hu after the Chet Ha’egel. What does the word “kidvarecha — according to your word” come to add? Hashem could have simply said, “Salachti — I have forgiven.” YOSSI WAS BLESSED. He had a clear grasp and deep understanding of his learning that far surpassed his classmates. The first time his rebbi would explain the Gemara to the class, he would already be nodding along. The second time, he’d be fidgeting in his seat. And the third? He’d nearly be nodding off to sleep. The days passed, and though Yossi was a well-mannered child, it was becoming more and more obvious that he was not utilizing his talents and abilities to their fullest. Yossi was under-stimulated and over-mature. His rebbi gave lots of thought to the future of his star talmid. He came to the realization that it wasn’t necessarily good for Yossi to wile away his days in the sixth grade classroom. Perhaps Yossi would do better in the seventh grade? Skipping a grade is no light decision, but once the rebbi decided this was the right move, he argued the case to the principal until he got the okay. Yossi would skip to the seventh grade after Chanukah. It was a good time to switch, coming after a few days of changed routine. This would provide Yossi with a new start of sorts. The morning after Chanukah, Yossi strode into his old classroom to gather his things. With a smile from ear to ear, he waved goodbye to his friends and made his way to seventh grade. Moments later, the rebbi walked into the sixth grade classroom. On his desk, he found a note, scrawled in childish script:

“Baruch shepitrani m’onsho shelazeh.” The rebbi was shocked. Yossi?! Could it be? Was this the way his treasure talmid was parting from him? After all he had done to try and help him, was this the way he was being “thanked”? Just to confirm, the rebbi asked the boys, “Who placed this here?” Sure enough, they all said they had seen Yossi place the note on the rebbi’s desk. Angered, the rebbi stomped out of the room and made his way to Yossi’s new classroom. He couldn’t fathom the chutzpah and betrayal. After all, he had fought for this change, and this was what he was getting in return… He opened the door of the seventh grade classroom. Setting his eyes sharply on Yossi, he asked, “Yossi! Did you place this note on my desk?!” “Yes,” Yossi said. In front of all of Yossi’s new classmates, the rebbi began shouting, “Are you not embarrassed?! I worked so hard for you! I stuck up for you! I made sure you would be in a place that’s good for you! And this is your goodbye? Is this the way you say thank you?” The rebbi paused for a moment, lowering his tone. “I may not be your rebbi anymore, but you still need to listen to me. Go home now. Think over what you’ve done, and think about whether it is nice to write such words to a rebbi.” The tears were streaming down Yossi’s red face. He looked at

the floor, unable to meet the rebbi’s gaze. Finally he mumbled, “But… I didn’t write this note. This is the note the children in class wrote to me as a goodbye.” He sniffled. “I just put it on the rebbi’s desk so the rebbi could see how the boys treated me, probably out of jealousy…” The rebbi was taken aback. “What?” “I would never write something like that to the rebbi,” Yossi said in a small voice. When the rebbi grasped the gravity of his error, he was distraught. How could he have publicly shamed this child in front of his new peers, especially at this crucial time when it was so important to make the right impression? To the rebbi’s credit, that very afternoon, he took responsibility for his actions. He returned to Yossi’s new classroom to publicly ask forgiveness, and he gave Yossi some money to buy treats for all of his new classmates. * * * * * We all hope to be marked down for a year of health, joy, nachas and parnassah. But who can say he is guaranteed so? The Kedushas Levi says: Who determines the gezar din? The person himself. Through the mitzvah of “b’tzedek tishpot amisecha,” through always seeing the good in another, the person causes his own verdict in Shamayim to be sweet. The decree lies in our hands. Being dan l’kaf zechus makes one into the greatest seneiger for himself. When we judge others favorably, we will be judged

favorably on High too. And the opposite is true as well. In fact, the very same words we use on others are applied to us during our celestial court case. The Shelah Hakadosh says that as we are being ruled Above, the malachim come and repeat the very words we have spoken on those around us. Perhaps we can explain “salachti kidvarecha” this way, too. Hashem says He forgives according to our word. The very same words we use as we judge and speak of our friends down here are the words upon which our judgment is ruled Above. May our extra efforts to see only positive in those around us, especially at this time of year, help us merit a true gmar chasimah tovah.

Did You Know? Shuls the world over are united by the traditional sing-song of the Vidui. Why are such solemn words chanted to such an optimistic tune? It is a message to us that if we do teshuvah out of ahavah, our aveiros turn into mitzvos. The more teshuvah we do, the more merits we earn. (Tiferes Yisrael) Another reason is because the Viduo is a mitzvah d’Oraisa, and mitzvos should be performed b’simchah. (Shir Maon)

CHAPTER 24 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi gains a large, prestigious following in Smyrna. The rabbis convene for long weeks to determine a course of action in response to Shabbesai Tzvi’s outright Torah transgressions. Shabbesai Tzvi, infuriated, takes an ax to the door of the Sinagoga, is finally let in, and gets ready to speak to the assembled.

“H

ow dare you come into this holy place, Shabbesai Tzvi?” shouted Rav Shlomo Algazi, one of the rabbis of the beis din. “You are not Moshiach! You are leading astray all these foolish people who believe in you. Get out of this shul, you false prophet who dares to desecrate the Shabbos and trample on the holy words of the Torah.” “Watch your tongue! You speak against the messenger of the Almighty, the anointed King of Yisroel. By breaking these doors on Shabbos, I have greatly weakened the power of the kelipah. It is a deep mystery, known only to those who have faith in the power of Moshiach,” Shabbesai Tzvi boldly replied. “We are not interested in you or your deep mysteries. Remove yourself from this shul along with the rabble you brought with you. We don’t want you here. We don’t —” Rav Shlomo Algazi did not have a chance to complete his sentence. Two pairs of burly arms grabbed him from both sides and shoved him

down into his seat. He looked up into the glowering faces of two of the huskiest of Shabbesai Tzvi’s henchmen and fell silent. “How can you be Moshiach?” a man called out from the rear of the shul. “It is a well-known tradition that Moshiach ben Yosef will appear before the coming of Moshiach ben David, that he will fight mighty wars with the gentiles and be slain at the gates of Yerushalayim. Only then will Moshiach ben David appear. If you are Moshiach ben David, where is Moshiach ben Yosef? Shabbesai Tzvi stared at the man for a moment or two before he replied. “I have looked into your heart, my precious child, and because you asked respectfully, without mockery or malice, I will answer your question. Moshiach ben Yosef appeared over seventeen years ago. His name was Rav Avraham Zalman, and he lived in Poland. He was killed by the Cossacks in 1648. May his name be forever blessed and his place in Gan Eden illumined by the reflected light of the Shechinah.” Shabbesai Tzvi turned toward the

holy ark, and to the astonishment of all the people in the shul, he said a fervent Kaddish for the departed soul of Rav Avraham Zalman of Poland. Rav Aharon Lapapa, the aged head of the beis din of Smyrna, struggled to his feet. Angry purple veins stood out on his forehead as he stamped his foot on the floor. “Cursed is the day you were born, you rebellious son of Smyrna,” he cried out. “How fortunate is your master Rav Yosef Escapa that he has not lived to see this day! You are a false prophet, Shabbesai Tzvi, who dares defile the holy Name of the Almighty by uttering the Shem Hameforash at will and doing other unforgivable sins.” The two burly henchmen moved threateningly toward the old rabbi, but Shabbesai Tzvi waved them back. “Your time has passed, Rav Aharon,” he said in a mocking voice. “A new world is emerging, and all the aged men who cling so desperately to the familiar darkness of the old world will be blown away like chaff from the fields. But in deference to all the Torah you have learned, I will answer you. Shechinta begalusa, the holy Shechinah is in exile along with the Jewish people, so to speak, and as long as the Shechinah is in exile, the first two holy letters of the Shem Hameforash are parted asunder from the last two. In the end of days,

when Moshiach unites the holy letters of the Name by bringing about the end of the exile, the prohibition against uttering the Shem Hameforash will no longer exist. When Moshiach utters the Shem Hameforash, it is not a sin but a profound remedy.” He paused and fixed Rav Aharon with a sharp stare. “Those well-versed in Kabbalah will understand this. As to the other sins you mention, they are mitzvos of the highest order rooted in the deepest of deep mysteries. And who should know this better than I who has been married to the Torah ever since I was in Salonika? It is forbidden to doubt my word, for the Torah is mine.” “All your words are foolishness, Shabbesai Tzvi,” shouted Rav Aharon. “The ravings of a madman.” Shabbesai Tzvi turned crimson with fury, but with visible effort, he restrained himself. “You have done grievous harm to your soul,” he said in a voice filled with menace. “I could have you put to death for your blasphemous words, but I’ll take pity on you. As long as you’re in my presence, you’ll have my protection, but once you’re out of my sight, you must face the danger you’ve brought upon yourself. And I warn you right now, if you so much as breathe another word, I’ll remove my protection from you and let those among my followers who are inclined to do so vent their righteous rage upon you. Beware of the danger that awaits you!” Yechiel Hapolani witnessed the public humiliation of the rabbis with mixed emotions. He understood full well that if Shabbesai Tzvi did not do battle with them, they would turn the people against him. Indeed, he was amazed at the master’s restraint in dealing with the hostile rabbis. Still, Yechiel had been brought up from earliest childhood to have the highest respect and reverence for Torah scholars, especially elderly Torah scholars, and he could not bear to watch their humiliation. Yechiel’s thoughts were interrupted by the hypnotic sound of Shabbesai Tzvi’s voice. “Good people of Smyrna,” began Shabbesai Tzvi. “You should feel proud that the Almighty has chosen one of your own to lead the Jewish people out of the bondage of exile and back to Eretz Yisroel. My precious children, you should be my most ardent supporters, not my enemies. “My precious children, heed not the words of those people who cannot conceive of a new world, a world of pure spirituality and holiness. Those who stand against me do so for less than the noblest of reasons. Look rather at all the prominent rabbis from near and far who have come here to Smyrna, before your very eyes, to rejoice at the coming of the final redemption. “Rejoice, my Jewish brothers! The time of deliverance is at hand. Rejoice also, my Jewish sisters, for I have come to wipe away the sin of Adam in that he ate from the Tree of Knowledge and to free all women from the curse of Chavah. No longer will you have to suffer the pain of gidul banim or bow your heads with humility. You shall be free as the birds that soar through the summer skies. “Speedily the day approaches when I will take the crown from the sultan’s head and place it on my own. No longer will we be driven from one place to another, never finding peace or comfort for more than a

fleeting while. No longer will we live in the land of Yishmael and Amalek, but in Eretz Yisroel, our own land, the land that the Almighty gave our forefathers for an everlasting inheritance.” A hush fell over the crowded shul as Shabbesai Tzvi finished speaking. Suddenly, one of the Kofrim arose from his seat. “Long live our lord, the King!” he shouted. “Let us give praise to the Almighty that we have lived to see this day.” Other people quickly followed suit, and in a few minutes, most of the people of the Portuguese Sinagoga had transferred their allegiance to Shabbesai Tzvi. Excited murmurs could be heard from behind the curtain that hung across the women’s section. Only the rabbis and a few householders remained steadfast in their opposition to Shabbesai Tzvi. “Wait a minute, good people of Smyrna!” cried one of the younger rabbis. “Before you accept the words of this false Moshiach, let him show you a sign from Heaven. Let him perform a true miracle for you right here and now to prove he is indeed the true Moshiach.” “Be silent, you insolent upstart!” shouted Shabbesai Tzvi in a towering fury. “I am putting you in cherem from this moment until you come to me on your knees begging for my royal pardon. Moshiach does not have to prove himself through signs. He must be accepted on faith alone. Moshiach’s commands must be executed instantly and without question. Avraham Yechini, step forward!” The tall preacher from Constantinople was instantly at his side. “Avraham, my loyal disciple, pronounce the Shem Hameforash right now before all these people, and while you do so, think upon the unity of the holy Shechinah.” Avraham Yechini hesitated for only a fraction of a second before he uttered the Shem Hameforash in a loud, ringing voice. “Shmuel Primo, step forward!” cried Shabbesai Tzvi. Yechiel Hapolani watched transfixed as Rabbi Shmuel Primo stepped forward and uttered the Shem Hameforash. The thought that he might also be called upon to do so filled him with dread. It was one thing to watch the Master do these things, because all of the deep mysteries of the Kabbalah lay open and un-

veiled before him. It was quite another to be called upon to do so himself. Father in Heaven, Yechiel prayed silently, please don’t put me to the test. One by one, the disciples and followers of Shabbesai Tzvi were called forward to utter the Shem Hameforash. As Yechiel tried to melt into the crowd on the far side of the shul, he heard Shabbesai Tzvi call on Mukian the Macedonian to step forward, and then Gamliel Basnoun. They both obeyed. Shabbesai Tzvi scanned the shul for any other loyal followers. He was just about to turn away when his eyes fell on Yechiel. “Yechiel Hapolani, step forward!” Yechiel felt his knees turn to water as he pushed through the crowd. His face was deathly pale, and a cold sweat covered his body. “Yechiel, you are the last,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Pronounce the Shem Hameforash, and as you do so, think upon the unity of the holy Shechinah.” Struggling against the choking panic in his throat, Yechiel uttered the Shem Hameforash in a hoarse and quavering voice, trying hard to think upon the unity of the Shechinah, as Shabbesai Tzvi had instructed. Then shaken and subdued, he returned to his inconspicuous place under the window at the side of the shul. Shabbesai Tzvi looked about the shul with satisfaction. The hostile expressions on the faces of the people had been replaced by rapturous ones. Only the rabbis, outmaneuvered and defeated, sat glowering at him, cursing him with their eyes. “Today we shall not pray Shacharis,” he said. “Instead, we shall go directly to the reading of the Torah.” The cantor nodded respectfully and began to walk toward the holy ark to take out a Torah scroll, but Shabbesai Tzvi stopped him with an imperious gesture of his hand. “We will not read from a Torah scroll today,” he said solemnly. “This is a momentous occasion, for it marks the acceptance of Moshiach by the people of the Portuguese Sinagoga in spite of the antagonism of their misguided rabbis. In honor of this occasion, we will read from a Chumash, which I shall consecrate with a special mystical blessing.” To be continued…

Tragedy and Devastation as Ida Slams New York Area Historic rains pounded the greater New York area last Wednesday, as Tropical Depression Ida slammed the region with an unexpected intensity, its rushing torrents of water claiming lives and causing untold millions of dollars in damages. Catastrophic flooding brought New York and New Jersey to their knees, shutting down roadways and subways and causing the cancellations of hundreds of flights at nearby airports. Officials begged residents to stay home because of the severity of the situation, a request that turned deadly for several people who died while sheltering in place in basement apartments in Brooklyn and Queens. Rav Shmiel Duvid Weissmandel of Mount Kisco was another stormrelated fatality, the Mount Kisco resident swept away by floodwaters as he was driving home from Monsey on the New York State Thruway near the Tappan Zee Bridge. Disturbing scenes that bore testament to the intensity of the raging waters circulated through the Jewish community, with footage showing wet Sifrei Torah laid out to dry after being rescued from Williamsburg shuls, one of which was flooded with several feet of water. Another video showed wedding guests standing on the porch of the Brightstone Hall in Passaic as workers in the parking lot several steps below milled about in knee-deep water, while yet another clip showed a group of Monsey women being ferried from the Tomche Shabbos warehouse in a boat. In Englewood, 60 bachurim found themselves trapped inside Yeshiva Ohr Simcha by waters whose intensity broke down the school’s door, a situation further complicated by on-site transformers, which posed an electrical risk. With 911 already swamped by calls for help, members of Kiryas Joel Chaverim, Bergen Hatzalah, volunteers from Teaneck and one man from Monroe Chaverim came out to assist the boys who were stranded in waist-high waters. The dangers continued even after emergency services sent boats to rescue the students, when rip tides caused by burst manhole covers made their evacuation a tricky process. The boys were ultimately brought to a nearby shul where they spent the night, with Chesed 24/7 providing them with food. Amid the submerged cars, flooded basements and other storm-related issues, reported Yeshiva World News, regional volunteers from Hatzolah, Shomrim and Chaverim volunteers responded to more than 5,000 calls in less than five hours during the height of the storm. Countless elderly victims who lived in basements were transported to safety, with volunteers assisting stranded motorists and helping people pump water out of their homes. Williamsburg

was hit particularly hard, with a group of volunteers from Chaverim of Lakewood driving in to lend a hand and staying to help until 5 a.m. According to the Associated Press, two tornadoes were reported in the New York area as the storm hit, remnants of Ida that devastated Louisiana when it made landfall on Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane. In Central Park, a total of 3.15 inches of rain was recorded in a single hour on August 25, obliterating the 1.94-inch record that had been set just one week earlier by Tropical Storm Henri. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio all declared states of emergencies in their respective locales. Boro Park 24 reported that New York City Buildings Commissioner Melanie La Rocca warned that flood-damaged buildings continue to pose serious dangers, with structural damage, mold and deterioration of electrical and gas plumbing systems all potential causes for concern. The Department of Buildings suggested multiple precautionary measures, including looking for signs of mold and structural stability issues and potential foundation damage. Anyone with any building-related questions is advised to call 311 for regular matters and 911 for emergencies.

Jews Targeted in More Than Half of 2020’s Religious Hate Crimes, Says FBI Despite being a significant minority in the United States, Jewish people were the most heavily targeted in hate crimes motivated by religion during the year 2020, according to statistics recently released by the FBI. Hamodia reported that 1,174 of the hate crimes reported in 2020 were religiously motivated, with 57.5% of that number targeting Jews. This statistic is even more significant since Jews make up just 2% of America’s population. Also, given that those numbers include only crimes that are self-reported to state and local law enforcement, the actual figures may be higher since many hate crimes go unreported. Attorney General Merrick Garland said that preventing and responding to bias crimes is a high priority to the Justice Department. “These hate crimes and other bias-related incidents instill fear across entire communities and undermine the principles upon which our democracy stands,” said Garland. “All people in this country should be able to live without fear of being attacked or harassed because of where they are from, what they look like ... or how they worship.”

A HEALTH Y SWEET YEAR

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR RECAP: Osher

and Shlomo are released from the hospital, though Osher still feels very weak. Ariella walks around the streets of Acco, and after a while, she meets up with Mrs. Reiness in front of her home.

M

ission number one had been crowned with success. Ariella watched as the taxi carrying Sarah Reiness drove off into the distance. An older man, wearing casual clothes, approached briskly from the other side of the sidewalk and pushed open the gate. He was holding a faded tallis and tefillin bag, and he pulled a key ring out of his pocket as he called over his shoulder, “The carpentry shop is closed now. It will open later this morning.” Carpentry shop? Interesting rabbi Osher had found himself — a carpenter-rabbi! Ariella observed from afar as the man opened the iron door on the ground floor and switched on the light. A bitter taste filled her mouth. If this was Osher’s rabbi, she would need to think hard about what to do and how. It was a bit strange, because the speech therapist, who had just left the house a few minutes before her husband came back from davening, had given a totally different impression. She looked from side to side. Osher sure had gorgeous views here. The question was what else he had. A carpentry shop? Since when did Osher like to use his hands? She had always been favored by the craft teachers, even if she hadn’t been able to follow their instructions to the letter. But Osher? Tatty and Mommy were hoping that the boys learned something here, that it was a “chizuk yeshivah” of some type. But if this man she saw was the “rosh yeshivah,” then she didn’t know what kind of levels of chizuk or kiruv she could possibly expect.

Ariella turned around and walked into the narrow alley that abutted the house. Here were old Arab houses, and there was a hodgepodge of shapeless, unconnected additions attached to them. There was also a strong odor of fish all around. She walked slowly along the sidewalk as the wind blew on her face, growing colder with each passing minute. Soon she returned to the street that ran along the waterline and chose the next street to turn down. Remarkably, it seemed to be a regular street, neither very wide nor narrow, and it was lined with much newer homes, some of which appeared to be rather upscale. She

66

wasn’t sure about the quality of the construction, but it was clear that the street had been built in a more contemporary, Western style. Was this where the Jews lived in the area? Why had the Reinesses decided to settle specifically in this location? “Hey!” A smiling woman of indeterminate age came out of one of the houses and stopped in front of her. “You’ve been wandering around here quite a lot, young lady, looking at the houses.” Ariella smiled thinly, remaining silent. She had no intentions of denying it, but she was also not going to concede her guilt. What had she done wrong? Noth-

ing. She hadn’t broken in anywhere, nor had she committed any other crime. “Are you looking for someone?” Ariella looked at her. The woman was wearing a coat and a wide scarf, and Ariella regretted not having taken something a little warmer for herself. “Yes,” she said tersely, but the roar of the waves swallowed up her word. “Can I help you?” The woman spoke a fluent Hebrew, without any accent. “I found what I’m looking for,” Ariella said crisply, not bothering to elaborate. “Now I’m just walking around a bit.” The woman put her hands into her pockets. “You look a little lost to me,” she

said. Ariella felt a familiar prickle in her limbs and took a step back. Something about the woman triggered a fear that she would pat Ariella on the shoulder or something. “Okay,” the woman said at last, still smiling. “If you want something, I live here.” And without saying another word, she strode down the street. Ariella watched her walk off and then turned in the other direction, walking back to the main road by the sea. Rain began to fall, and she crossed the street to see the drops hit the water on the other side of the wall. The wind had weakened a bit, and the umbrella that she snapped open protected her well. Which was perfect, because as she stood with her face to the sea, she suddenly heard the sound of a car pulling up just behind her, near the Reinesses’ home. She looked out of the corner of her eye and saw a bearded man, wearing a hat and suit, emerging from the car. He was followed by a tall youth with a bandaged cheek and another teen, who was shorter and dragging his leg. She could hear the second boy’s voice, which he raised to be heard over the wind. “Ugh, we don’t have umbrellas, Rebbi.” The taller boy said something that Ariella could not hear. “Come under my umbrella, Osher; let me just get it open for you,” the bearded man said. Ariella quickly turned back to the sea, but just before she did, she was able to catch a glimpse of the threesome disappearing behind the gate. So this was Rabbi Reiness. And it’s so nice to see you, too, Osher! ***** Sarah Reiness studied the appointment sheet affixed to her door and nodded politely to the secretary who had just walked in. “It started out as such a nice day,” Toha, the Arab secretary of the health clinic, said with a sigh as she pulled her umbrella closed. “And then I got caught in this downpour! Do you think everyone will still come, even in such weather?”

68

The Boro Park View

September 9, 2021

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

“Good question,” Sarah said. “You called everyone to confirm yesterday?” “Yes, but I didn’t get through to all of them,” the secretary replied. She turned to the electric kettle. “And the mother of your first patient was one of those who didn’t answer. I hope she remembers anyway.” I don’t mind if she doesn’t. Sarah’s lips mouthed the words, but the secretary was too busy with her tea to notice. “Should I make you tea, too?” “No, thank you.” “Oh, right, you don’t use this kettle, do you?” Toha remembered. “Did you bring something hot to drink from home? In this weather…” “It’s fine. I had a coffee just before I left, and this room is well heated.” Sarah smiled as she closed the door, blocking out the voices and the noise from the clinic. A bit of quiet, please. And no, she didn’t mind at all if eight-year-old Orna did not come for her weekly session. She’d slept so little last night that forty-five minutes of silence, and time to reorganize her thoughts, would do her a world of good. Elazar was trying to emanate calm, but he wasn’t calm. He’d been tense before Shabbos, and he was no less tense after Shabbos, now that he’d discovered that someone had visited the yard. She wasn’t sure he knew ahead of time what he’d be getting into by moving out to Acco… She assumed he hadn’t thought everything would flow smoothly like water, but the tremendous pressure, which he hadn’t expected, was really unnerving him. And when he was unnerved, so was she. Did they have reason to be afraid? She needed to speak with him, to find out what he was planning to do if he felt threatened. They needed to decide up to what point they would fight at all costs, and at what point they would agree to retreat, recognizing — painful as it would be to do so — that they had failed. She smiled bitterly to herself. If Elazar would be here now and would hear her thoughts, he would claim that from the start she’d thought they had no chance, while he always believed they did.

And honestly? He would be right. She really wasn’t sure that there was much of a chance that this could work. Did anyone think that they could make serious deals with Arabs? And after such a long period of time? “No,” she said aloud, and then started when the door opened. Toha stuck her head in. “Orna’s here, Sarah,” she said. “I’m letting her in, okay? Even though she’s late. And I have someone on the phone who can hardly speak, but she says she only wants you. I told her that you’re very busy, and she’s arguing with me. What should I tell her?” Sarah passed a hand across her forehead. “First of all, Toha, don’t ever say that people can barely speak when they can hear you. And about this caller, can you ask her if she met me just this morning near my house?” Toha asked. “She says yes,” she replied a moment later, ignoring Sarah’s first comment. “Okay, so let her come today at five,

when I finish.”

Osher I was in quite a bit of pain after lunch, so I didn’t go down to the shop. No one was upstairs with me, so I sat on my bed and daydreamed. I don’t know what was so bad about saying that Reb Elazar was acting like a spy. There’s clearly something strange going on here. It’s true that he understands people (I don’t remember who told me this about him), and that’s for sure why he was able to get me to come here. But why does he need to schlep everyone over to Acco, especially to this old place, when there are hardly any Jews in the area? And he knows nothing about carpentry. If he did want to open a yeshivah for boys like me, couldn’t he do it in the middle of Bnei Brak? What did he see in this particular house? I mean, sure, it’s very nice here; there’s the sea, which is beautiful and calming. And being so far from the

center of the country is also very calming. But it’s still strange. Reb Elazar himself laughed when I asked him this; he didn’t say that I was wrong. Really, I shouldn’t ask such questions anymore. Instead, I should try to find out for myself why this place is so special and what about this house drew him here. I stood up. The door to the house was locked; I had locked it earlier. I didn’t want some Abu I-Don’t-Know-What to show up again and start asking me questions about “our school.” I went out of my room to the small hallway in front of the Rav’s private quarters, where there was a cabinet I’d never touched. The right door was a bit open, and it looked like something was almost falling out of it. I drew closer and saw that it was a tall, thin book that looked like an old-fashioned photo album. I pushed it back into place. And that’s when I noticed that one picture had remained on the floor. To be continued…

INGREDIENTS 1½–2 ripe mangos 1 orange 1 lemon 1 lime 1 cup sugar ½ cup water ¼ cup vodka

INGREDIENTS 1 cup vanilla ice cream 3 T. lemon cream or mango citrus drink base

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and cube the mangos. 2. Juice the orange, lemon and lime.

DIRECTIONS

3. Combine all the ingredients except the vodka.

1. Defrost the ice cream for approximately 10 minutes.

4. In a 3-quart saucepan, bring the mixture to a boil and cook until sugar has dissolved. 5. Blend the mixture until it’s smooth. 6. Add the vodka. 7. Serve two parts of this mixture mixed with three parts of cold water for a cold drink, or with boiling water for a hot drink. Variation: Instead of adding water, serve this as sauce over ice cream, or as slush over crushed ice.

2. Marbleize the lemon cream into the ice cream. 3. Serve the ice cream in scoops, topped with additional lemon cream or mango drink sauce.

MINI LEMON MERINGUE PIES This recipe is as easy as pie!

INGREDIENTS 1 pkg. Unger’s mini frozen pie shells 1 container lemon cream Snow kisses

DIRECTIONS 1. Bake the shells according to the package directions. 2. Fill each shell with lemon cream. 3. Top each pie with store-bought snow kisses before serving. Note: Make sure the size of your snow kisses coordinates with that of your pastry shells.

FOOD EDITOR’S NOTE: What a delicious honor it was shooting this feature. I have one piece of advice: Make them all. They’re divine.

Yom Shabbos Shabboson: A day of white, of purity. Of slippers and fasting. Of soulful melodies and hearts poured out in prayer. A day of introspection and atonement… And yet, this is but the galus version. What about the Geulah version? How is Yom Kippur observed when we’re in our own land, serving Hashem in His Beis Habechirah? 90

The Boro Park View

The Week Before

Through the power of money, Tzadokim were frequently able to procure the position of Kohen Gadol, while the truly righteous could do nothing to stop them. For this reason, the zekeinim enjoin an oath upon the Kohen Gadol, courtesy of the heretical Tzadokim. It was always a painful moment:

Preparations for Yom Kippur begin a week in advance, when the Kohen Gadol, who must be a married man, moves from his home into a room in the Beis Hamikdash called the Lishkas Parhedrin. Removed from the mundane, surrounded by the holiness of the Beis Hamikdash, the Kohen Gadol is able to engage deeply in introspection and prepare himself for the awesome yom tov that lies ahead. During this time, he is trained to perform the avodah flawlessly by practicing the sprinklings, the offering of the ketores, the lighting of the Menorah, and the preparation of the korbanos upon the Mizbe’ach — for come Yom Kippur, he will be required to perform the entire avodah on his own. To help the Kohen Gadol internalize the details of the service, the zekeinim sit with him, urging him to examine the holy texts for himself, teaching him about the approaching holy day and the complete order of its service. On the third and seventh days of this preparatory week (unless one of those days falls on Shabbos), the Kohen Gadol is sprinkled with the ashes of the parah adumah to cleanse him from any tumas meis he may have unwittingly contracted. During this time, a second Kohen also readies himself for service in the event that the anointed Kohen Gadol becomes disqualified from performing the avodah either before or during Yom Kippur.

The Kohen Gadol remains surrounded by people throughout the night of Yom Kippur so as to prevent him from lapsing into slumber. If the Kohen Gadol is capable, he expounds upon the teachings of the Torah for those around him; otherwise, others speak in his presence. Likewise, he reads aloud the words of the Torah, or has them read to him. If at any time he begins to doze, the Pirchei Leviyah (the young Kohanim) snap their fingers and encourage him to stand on the cold floor to keep himself awake. The Kohen Gadol is kept busy until the time for the first korban, at which point the avodah of Yom Kippur begins.

The Day Before

The Day Dawns

On the day before Yom Kippur, bulls, rams and sheep are made to pass before the Kohen Gadol so that he is completely familiar with their identifying details. On that day, too, the zekeinim tell the Kohen Gadol:

Throughout Yom Kippur, the Kohen Gadol alternates between performing the daily avodah and the specialized Yom

“Kohen Gadol, we are agents of the court and you are our agent and an agent of the court; we administer an oath to you in the name of He Who causes His name to dwell in this house that you not deviate at all from what we told you.”

The reason for this oath is because of the Tzadokim who came to prominence during the era of the Second Beis Hamikdash.

The High Priest would turn away and cry because they suspected him of heresy, and they would turn away and cry, because they placed suspicion on a person whose conduct was unknown. Maybe he had no such thoughts in his heart. — Mishneh Torah, Avodas Yom Hakippurim 1:7

The Night of Yom Kippur

Disparity in the Numbers There is a vast disparity in the number of Kohanim Gedolim who served in the First and Second Beis Hamikdash. For the 410 years of the Bayis Rishon, only 18 Kohanim Gedolim served, each blessed with longevity — while the 420 years of Bayis Sheini saw more than 300 Kohanim Gedolim! Only a handful of these were righteous; the rest were Tzadokim who served less than a year each, dying prematurely due to their perverted performance of the Yom Kippur avodah.

Kippur avodah. Furthermore, he moves in and out of the Kodesh Hakodashim, performing the avodas pnim — the inner service — and the avodas chutz — the outer service. Each time he alternates between these services, he’s required to change from the eight-piece golden bigdei kehunah, called the bigdei zahav, to a special four-piece linen outfit called the bigdei lavan, and vice versa. Between each change of clothing, the Kohen Gadol is required to tovel himself. He also washes his hands and feet before taking off one set of clothing, and again after putting on the other set of clothing, for a total of five immersions and ten hand/feet washings.

This is the order of the day:

First Avodas Chutz in the Gold Garments The Kohen Gadol immerses in the mikveh located in the Shaar Hamayim. He dresses in the bigdei zahav. He washes his hands and feet together, hands atop feet,

using a special golden pitcher called the kiton. The water is taken from the kiyor. The Kohen Gadol performs the daily avodah, which includes the shechitah, kabbalah (receiving the dam in a vessel), holacha (bringing the dam to the Mizbe’ach) and zerikah (sprinkling of the dam) of the Korban Tamid; burning the ketores on the Mizbe’ach Hazahav in the Heichal; burning the Tamid on the outer Mizbe’ach, bringing the minchas nesachim and minchas chavisin (flour offerings); and pouring the nesachim (libation) upon the Mizbe’ach.

When he is finished with these steps, the Kohen heads up to the mikveh on top of the Beis Haparvah.

First Avodas Pnim in the White Garments The Kohen Gadol washes his hands and feet. He removes the bigdei zahav. (Other Kohanim surround the Kohen Gadol and the mikveh area with a linen partition for privacy.)

The Kohen Gadol walks to where a bull stands waiting between the Ulam and the Mizbe’ach. This bull is the Kohen Gadol’s personal property and will atone for him and his household. The Kohen Gadol leans with both hands on the bull’s head and confesses his sins and those of his household. He then proceeds to the eastern gate, Shaar Nikanor, where two identical goats stand waiting. He places his hands into a container that contains two same-sized objects; upon one is written “la’Hashem — to Hashem’’ and on the other “la’azazel — to the wilderness.” The lot in his right hand he places on the goat to his right, and the lot in his left hand on the goat to his left. The Kohen Gadol ties a red band around the horns of the goat la’azazel. The Kohen Gadol returns to his bull, leans on it again, and confesses on behalf of all Kohanim who may have eaten kodshim or entered the Beis Hamikdash while tamei.

Only when the room is full of smoke does the Kohen Gadol leave; when he exits, he offers a short tefillah on behalf of Klal Yisroel. The Kohen Gadol puts the shovel of embers on the Even Hashesiyah between the poles of the Aron or the equivalent area. (There was no Aron in the

Silencing the Satan The Gemara (Yoma 20a) says that the Satan doesn’t have the power to prosecute on Yom Kippur. Rami bar Chama explains that “hasatan” has the numerical value of 364, to represent his ability to prosecute the entire year, excluding Yom Kippur. To understand the Satan better, Reish Lakish explains that “the Satan is also the yetzer hara and the malach hamaves” (Bava Basra 16a). In other words, the same force that entices man to sin, also opens his mouth to speak against the sinner to prosecute him, and then carries out the decree of execution for the sins committed. But on Yom Kippur, the Satan loses this power, because Yom Kippur is “Shabbos Shabboson” — a day that belongs to the World to Come, where there is neither sin nor death.

The goat’s dam is poured into the container with the dam of the bull.

Understanding Korbanos “Korban” comes from the word “karov — to draw near.” A korban is meant to activate emotions, causing man to seek closeness with his Creator. It is extremely important to note that the offering of korbanos is not the ultimate atonement, for if one sacrifices without teshuvah, the sacrifice is worthless. As the Rambam writes: “Those who bring sin offerings or guilt offerings must also [confess their sins] when they bring their sacrifices for their inadvertent or willful transgressions. Their sacrifices will not atone for their sins until they repent and make a verbal confession as [Vayikra 5:5] states: ‘He shall confess the sin he has committed upon it.’”

The Sa’ir La’azazel The goat sent away to the wilderness is the goat that is symbolically loaded up with the sins of the nation. It becomes so “saturated” with “ra” that it can’t be in the holiness of the Beis Hamikdash. It is sent far away from the holiest place and from the holy nation — us — symbolically showing that we are so disgusted by sin that we never want to see it again. By doing so, we are able to wipe the final stains of sin from ourselves. Why isn’t the goat offered as a korban? The goat la’azazel is specifically not shechted in the wilderness in order to prevent people from mistakenly thinking it is being offered to the Satan. This would be idolatry, and for that reason, the goat is not slaughtered.

The Even Hashesiyah azarah. He leans on its head, and on behalf of the people, confesses for all the sins committed the past year (aside from those related to eating kodshim or entering the Beis Hamikdash when tamei, for which the Chatas atones). While the Kohen confesses, the people confess privately.

The Even Hashesiyah is the foundational stone from which the earth was created. It is the stone upon which Yitzchok Avinu lay at the Akeidah, and the stone upon which the Aron sat in the Beis Hamikdash.

The goat is sent to the wilderness with a designated man called the “ish iti.” When he reaches the cliff in the wilderness, the ish iti divides the red string, leaving half tied to the goat’s horns while he ties the other half to a part of the cliff. The goat then plunges down the cliff. While the goat is walking to the wilderness, the Kohen Gadol removes the innards of the bull and the Chatas goat, and intertwines the carcasses. People carry the animals to the Beis Hadeshen (Place of Ashes) outside of Yerushalayim to be burned. The Kohen Gadol enters the Ezras Nashim and reads from the Torah the segments that speak of Yom Kippur and the Yom Kippur korbanos. When he is finished, he blesses Hashem, blesses the Beis Hamikdash, blesses the Yidden, and blesses the Kohanim.

Second Avodas Chutz in the Gold Garments The Kohen Gadol then immerses in the mikveh in the Beis Haparvah. He puts on the golden garments and cleanses his hands and feet.

He brings two rams as Korbanos Olah with Mincha and nesachim. Part of the Musaf is also brought at this time. The innards of the bull and goat are burned on the Mizbe’ach.

Second Avodas Pnim in the White Garments The Kohen Gadol immerses in the mikveh at the Beis Haparvah, changes into the linen garments, and then washes his hands and feet. The Kohen Gadol returns to the Kodesh Hakodashim and removes the kaf and shovel. He goes back to the Beis Haparvah and tovels one more time, taking off the linen garments and putting on the golden garments. He washes his hands and feet and puts away the linen garments, never to be used again. The Kohen Gadol finishes bringing the Musaf korbanos and the afternoon Tamid. He kindles the Menorah. The Kohen Gadol washes his hands and feet for the tenth and final time that day, then changes into his regular clothing and leaves the Beis Hamikdash. Note: The description of the avodah above follows the order laid out in the book The Yom Kippur Avodah, which follows Rashi. There are differences of opinion in regard to some aspects of the avodah.

The Ketores The ketores offered in the Kodesh Hakodashim contained a plant called the maaleh ashan. It made the smoke rise straight up. The smell of the ketores was so powerful that goats in Yericho, many miles away, would sneeze. The Rambam writes in Moreh Nevuchim that the powerful smell would cover up the smell of the many korbanos, which could be rather unpleasant. On a deeper level, we can understand this to mean that the korbanos represent the animal instincts that can lead a person to emit a “bad odor” — aka evil — while the smell of ketores, which represents cleaving to Hashem, is powerful enough to overcome even the worst of it.

“The white garments were of linen from Pallus, worth eighteen measures; the finest linen with which to serve the King of Glory. His ox stood between the antechamber and the altar; its face to the West and its head to the South. He leaned his hands upon its head and confessed his sins, not hiding even one...” The avodah portion of Yom Kippur Mussaf is remarkably descriptive in its narration of the Kohen Gadol’s service on this solemn day some 2,000 years ago. Even the direction of the ox’s head in relation to its face is deemed important, helping set a vivid scene and letting our imagination take us way back in time. Part of our responsibility in remembering the avodah in the Beis Hamikdash and yearning for its return is relating to and visualizing it as much more than a distant, abstract phenomenon. It was, and will be once again, tangible and real — a physical entity, as real-life as any building we can see, feel and enter today — built with earthly materials, yet elevated to be part of the Divine. Throughout the ages, many poskim and meforshim extolled the virtues of studying and visualizing the

Beis Hamikdash and its precise dimensions, with some of them preparing detailed diagrams based on Torah sources. Today, the popular “Beis Hamikdash in Virtual Reality” lets people tour the chambers, halls, entrances and courtyards of the place Hashem chose as His home in this world. Like the Yidden who would visit that venerable space during every chag, the people behind this project too are diverse and represent the Jewish world at large. * * * * *

The program was designed and created by a prominent Israeli talmid chacham of Yemenite descent. After years of enthusiastically studying the subject, he poured

in a mind-boggling number of hours — 30 of them just on the Kohen Gadol’s hat — into the design and development of a virtual tour of the Beis Hamikdash. Viewers put on a pair of glasses and are led through a lifelike tour of the holy premises where they see — no, feel like they are experiencing what our ancestors did all those years ago. With the support and guidance of gedolim, the creators have developed an experience that takes people inside those hallowed walls and shows them everything they would see if they were literally standing inside the Beis Hamikdash. Turning their heads to the right and left gives them a view of the room around them, just as it would in real life. Rabbi Yossi Soble, a longtime rebbi and teacher in Chabad schools, was thrilled when he first heard about the program. He had always felt a fascination for this subject and enjoyed reading up on relevant sources and chassidic interpretations of the Beis Hamikdash and its physical properties. When he once witnessed the power of virtual tours, he immediately felt that this must to be utilized for greater purposes as well. At that point, he reached out to the founder of this program and offered his assistance. A couple of months later, the founder of this program came from Eretz Yisroel to showcase his product at the Torah Umesorah convention in the United States (where he eventually received a rare and ringing endorsement), and he asked Rabbi Soble for help. When an offer came for Rabbi Soble to distribute the program in America, he asked his personal rav for guidance, but received only a lukewarm endorsement, as there was concern that it would interfere with his job as a rebbi. That same afternoon, he happened to glance at a sefer where a gadol explained why specifically the Kohanim guarded the Beis Hamikdash even though everyone was allowed to perform this task. The author wrote that it was done to show that no work in this special place was beneath anyone; every aspect was holy and to be cherished by those involved. These words resonated with

Rabbi Soble, and he showed them to his rav — who relented and told him to proceed. During that period, a Satmar chassid, Reb Karpel Margulies, also stumbled upon the program and eagerly offered to distribute it in the heimish world if it were to be reproduced in Yiddish. It was, and eventually Rabbi Soble and Rabbi Margulies joined forces to bring this remarkable experience to thousands of bachurim, yungeleit and members of the general public.

Closing your eyes and imagining yourself in the Beis Hamikdash is common. But opening your eyes and seeing it right in front of you is an experience that often leaves an indescribable and unforgettable mark.

Right now, the program comprises two parts. The first focuses on the layout and visuals of the Beis Hamikdash, and the second on specific events, including the avodah of Yom Kippur. Adhering to the advice of gedolim, the visuals are stationary and not movie-like, and the VR glasses are completely blocked from being used in any other capacity. * * * * *

Closing your eyes and imagining yourself in the Beis Hamikdash is common, especially for those who spend their day learning the halachos of korbanos and the like. But opening your eyes and seeing it right in front of you is an experience that often leaves an indescribable and unforgettable mark. Rabbi Soble and Rabbi Margulies share stories of how this tour impacted participants — from roshei yeshivah to everyday baalei batim — and changed their perspectives and lives. Being moved to tears at seeing our long-destroyed spiritual home come to life is common to the point of being considered unremarkable, until you hear about the man who has returned over a dozen times to experience it again and again, each time crying at the sight before him. Members of yeshivah groups who have enjoyed the program have written letters where they described how it changed their entire outlook on their studies and how their davening and learning has been transformed. At a Chanukah party where Rabbi Margulies set up the Beis Hamikdash VR, one of the attendees was a troubled bachur who had been estranged from his parents for years. A couple of weeks later, Rabbi Margulies received a call from one of the organizers, who told him that the very next day, this boy picked up the phone and contacted his father for the first time in three years! A routine reaction from moved participants is to express how they never connected to the Beis Hamikdash in a way that made it real to them. Even when one already carries an unwavering belief, seeing is believing. More importantly, seeing is connecting — connecting to a place where the Kohanim will serve, the Levi’im will sing, and Klal Yisroel will once again be whole in its true home.

“Indeed, how glorious was the sight of the Kohen Gadol as he emerged from the Kodesh Kodashim, peacefully and unharmed…”

We came from America on a mission, a fire burning in our souls. With us, there would be ten men. Our voices and accents would blend in a fusion of prayer, emotion and thought. But Hashem had other plans, and we were only eight... Yomim Nora’im turned out to be an interesting experience, with Kol Nidrei echoing hauntingly off the walls. Russia was a country of broken promises, betrayed trust. There was no one to impress; everyone was special and needed. Now it is Motzei Yom Kippur, and mighty winds sweep across the empty streets. The sky is a murky gray, the slice of moon hidden from view. We walk quickly, our eyes focused on the imposing shul ahead. Its beautiful architecture has been cruelly masked by the ravages of age. Like everything else in this small hamlet, the shul is only a relic of the golden years when Jewish life thrived on these very streets. “I hope it’s open,” says Duvid, his flaxen peyos dancing in the gusts that make us shiver. Efroyim fiddles with the door handle. A dog barks angrily in the distance. “It’s locked.” Grim expressions appear. Today’s sweetness fades, replaced by deep-seated worry. We are scheduled to return home tomorrow to our waiting families. Duvid paces ner-

vously. His machzorim and tallis are inside the tall edifice that suddenly seems foreboding, prison-like. We peer around the sides. The windows are all shuttered. “Can you try Mr. Iosbashvilli?” I flex my fingers to cut the numbness that has overtaken them. Of course! Sergei Iosbashvilli, the gabbai. How his brown eyes sparkled when I told him of the vibrant Jewish life in America, 30 boys to a class. His features trembled at the picture of my Moishele, curly peyos swinging as he sways over a Gemara. “I looked just like that when I was his age,” he whispered, tears darkening his burgundy tie. “Sorry, Duvid — it’s going straight to voicemail.” My voice emerges thin, swept away by the gales. He turns, but not before I see the flicker of worry in his eyes. Will his belongings stay in this frigid, forsaken place forever?

Gershon takes out his credit card and tries to pop the lock by slipping the thin piece of plastic between the door and its frame. But his nimble fingers are no match for the heavy oak door that has weathered harsh storms, hatred and cruelty. I stride around to the side of the building, up and down, up and down. What to do? Bashefer, I whisper into the blackness. Please help us. You can do anything! Now I am facing the back of the building. Wisps of conversation float through the misty air. Should we just leave it? I close my eyes tight, and when I open them, I notice another small window. Golden light tumbles onto the overgrown hedges below. My heart beats fast. I pound forcefully on the glass. My friends’ shadows appear behind me and we call out together. “Open!” But our cries reverberate in the empty silence. Our eyes are trained on the small square when we hear

the heavy footsteps. A side door swings open… open! Relief and hope bloom within my chest. My friends and I crowd the doorway as I wonder who our rescuer is. But here he is, treading toward us, heavy footsteps echoing on the vinyl floor. He is hunched and almost bald, except for a few precious snowwhite patches. Wrinkles are etched into his small face. He looks like he has seen too much in his life, and right now he also looks confused. Holding out his gnarled hands, he motions, purple veins bulging, as if to say, Who are you, and what on earth are you doing here? Involuntarily, we step back. “I left some things behind,” Duvid says at last. The old man raises his head, and in the glow of the candle, his face shines. I stare. On a small rickety table sits a tattered Mishnayos. The shul looks so different when it’s shrouded in darkness. Sinister shadows hang creepily off the domed ceilings, and the light waxes and wanes as we stare. Duvid fumbles around as the air grows thick with our unasked questions. When the man finally opens his mouth, his hoarse words bounce around us as we listen. “You are probably wondering why I am here now,” he begins, his voice bloated by age. My mind thumps with so many more queries. Now? Where were you all of Yomim Nora’im? Perhaps with you we could have had a minyan? Gershon looks like he is about to burst. Wax slowly dribbles onto the table beside the yellowed pages. “I am not religious,” he says, and a hint of sadness laces his declaration. “But when I was a young cheder yingele, my rebbi taught us something that has stayed deep in my heart ever since.” The old man suddenly disappears. In his place is a rosy-cheeked boy with sparkling blue eyes. He sits and listens carefully as he twirls his golden peyos. At the front of the room, the rebbi speaks softly, dusting the room with glittering diamonds. “Yingelach,” he says, and he grows animated. “The world survives only on Torah! If there is even one moment when no one is learning Torah, the world will collapse.” The room is still. We hold our breaths, watching times flash and change, worlds colliding in this diminutive man.

His nimble fingers are no match for the heavy oak door that has weathered harsh storms, hatred and cruelty. “I don’t want the world to end because of me, and I worry that Motzei Yom Kippur is a busy time.” His words tumble out messily, but with an earnest yearning. “Maybe no one will learn? So I come by here every year…” It is a good thing the room is cloaked in comforting dimness. I feel my throat choke, hear the sniffles from someone beside me. The man’s pure voice rises melodically as he chants the age-old words. My heart sings too, alive and full. I think of the treasured Yidden throughout the generations who have held our everlasting Torah tight to their souls. Through water and fire, the flames of Spain and bitter cold of Russia, our golden chain stretches all the way back to Har Sinai in a blaze of sincerity and love. The lone flame flickers unexpectedly. Yet like our newest friend, it holds onto its last embers of faith and rises to beauty once again. Arms around each other, we pull our hero into the middle of our circle. He holds the Mishnayos aloft like a trophy as tears stream down his face. We dance away the cold night, warmth filling our souls. In the shadows I imagine our loving Father looking down with bursting pride. I let myself be swept away in this glorious moment, as we sing and sing until our voices touch the very heavens. “Kudsha Brich Hu v’Oraisa v’Yisroel chad hu — the Holy One, the Torah and Yisroel are one.”

From Crimson to White The first chapter of Sefer Yeshayahu includes two pesukim that contain ten exhortations to teshuvah. According to Rashi, these correspond to the ten days of teshuvah, culminating with Yom Kippur: “Wash, cleanse yourselves, remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes, cease to do evil. Learn to do good, seek justice, strengthen the robbed, perform justice for the orphan, plead the case of the widow.”

Like Malachim On Yom Kippur we rise beyond the confines of this finite world, distancing ourselves from physicality. On this day, the Satan holds no power over us. We therefore wear white to symbolize that we are like malachim, able to tap into a heightened level of purity. Some people specifically wear a white linen kittel, for in both Sefer Yechezkel and Sefer Daniel, malachim are described as being dressed in linen.

– Yeshayahu 1:16–17 At the conclusion of these ten exhortations is the following pasuk: “If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow; if they prove to be as red as crimson dye, they shall become as wool.” – Yeshayahu 1:18 The Ridbaz explains that the custom to wear white on Yom Kippur comes from this pasuk in Sefer Yeshayahu. After true teshuvah on Yom Kippur, one’s sins will become white as snow.

A Serious Reminder to Do Teshuvah Yom Kippur is a solemn time, when the verdict of our teshuvah lies before us. For this reason, many married men wear a kittel, which is similar to tachrichim (burial shrouds), humbling our hearts as we stand before Hashem’s judgment.

White, L’kavod Shabbos Kodesh Yom Kippur is the Shabbos of Shabbosos. For that reason, we guard it as we do all Shabbosos: by refraining from melacha and exerting ourselves to honor the Shabbos. Wearing white on Shabbos has deep mystical roots, of which Rabbi Chaim Vital, zt”l, expounded upon in Shaar Hakavanos. Here is one small snippet: “A man is required to wear white garments [on Shabbos]... Know that the minimum is to wear four white garments; these are the outer garment, the lower garment, the sash upon one’s lower garments and the robe that is [worn] upon the skin…” Some men are careful to don a white gartel with their kittel.

The Color of Mercy

‫צום נייעם יאר א‬

‫פרישע‬ ‫בלעטל‬

The Malbim notes that when describing the mann, the Torah says in one place that it was crystal-like, and in another place that it was white. The Malbim explains that the mann was crystal-like during the week but white on Shabbos, because there is a special revelation of rachamim that occurs on the holiest day of the week. The middas harachamim is symbolized by the color white. To remind us of this mercy that comes down on Shabbos, we take care to wear white garments and prepare a white tablecloth. This certainly applies for Yom Shabbos Shabboson!

In the Kodesh Hakodashim The Kohen Gadol wore only white garments when he entered the Kodesh Hakodashim.

A White Tichel When Rivka Imeinu saw her husband Yitzchok Avinu approaching for the first time, she took a scarf and covered herself, as the pasuk says: ‫וַ ִּת ַקח ַה ָצ ִעיף וַ ִּת ְת ָּֽכס‬. The word ‫( ָצ ִעיף‬scarf) has the same gematria as ‫( נר‬candle): 250. For this reason, many chassidishe women have a minhag to wear a special tichel for candlelighting. And, of course, because it’s a special piece of Shabbos clothing, the minhag is for it to be white. Because Yom Kippur is Shabbos Shabboson, the scarf appears on yom tov, as well.

‫רייניגט אייך פון יעדער עין הרע‬ ‫און זייט ממשיך אויף זיך‬

‫א כתיבה וחתימה טובה און‬ ‫א גוט געבענטשט יאר‬

Confidence in the Verdict The Midrash in Yalkut Shimoni tells us that unlike a man who stands before an earthly court dressed in black, having let his hair grow wild out of concern for a harsh judgment, Klal Yisroel dresses in white, takes haircuts before Yom Kippur, and eats and drinks joyfully, for we know that Hashem will perform miracles for us!
