(Re: The Very Best Mommy, Issue 103) Your articles this week geared for the Yiddishe mamme were so refreshing and oh, so validating! The piece “The Very Best Mommy” hit especially close to home. It took me quite a number of years to realize that I am the very best mommy — and no need to prove that. No need to do things to make sure my kids know it, because it’s a clear-cut, clean fact. And, oh, the liberating feeling that came with that realization! I am free to love because I want to love, and not because I have to prove my love. I am free to give whenever and whatever I choose to give, without the attachments of guilt or resentment — just with an overflowing, loving heart. And to clarify, no, that does not give me permission to be negligent or uncaring, chas v’shalom. It means being able to cut corners easily (without the sinking feeling), and on the flip side, being able to treat my kids easily, or make them a delightful surprise, since there’s no pressure involved. Because, after all, regardless of anything, I am the very best mommy in the world! Thanks again for an amazing publication. C.N.
JUST WHAT I NEEDED
(Re: The Corners We Cut, Issue 103) The article about shortcuts mothers take is exactly what I needed to read as I was trying to get my bearings post yom tov. Life as a working mother (and this is true for non-working mothers, too) sometimes feels like constantly being on the go with thousands of things calling my name from all directions. And reading about others’ irons relegated to the far corners of their home and a garbage bag full of disposable cookware was a balm for my mother-soul. Thank you! F.W.

Laser actually becomes a lot less effective towards the end of your treatment regimen. This is because laser is attracted to the pigmentation of the hair, and absorbs its roots. After several sessions, the hairs may be so thin and light that the laser is no longer attracted to them, because there’s not enough pigmentation left. For the best results, laser should be followed by electrolysis treatments. Most laser salons are not equipped with electrolysis machines or the know-how to complete a proper hair removal treatment. A L I T T L E T O L D M E
“When I walked in I strongly believed I needed laser. But with your broad knowledge you knew that electrolysis would be better and we saw results in no time at all! You thought about me, my results and finances - I appreciate your honesty on top of all!” Mrs. B. Meisels, Mechaneches

(Re: The Corners We Cut, Issue 103) I’d like to share with other busy mothers the corner I cut. When I want to bake a cake for Shabbos with less mess and less stress, I mix a Bundt cake recipe (which generally doesn’t require beaters) in the food processor when it’s anyhow in use. I then bake it in two disposable loaf pans, and it turns out perfectly delicious! Another Mother
AN ART TO BE PROUD OF
(Re: The Corners We Cut, Issue 103) I don’t know how the other readers viewed the article on housekeeping shortcuts, but I was very bothered by these ideas. It seems some people have it all wrong. Being a balabusta is a privilege! Cooking, laundry, making beds, cleaning, etc. are akin to the avodah of the Kohen Gadol in the Kodesh Hakodashim! These are not things to try to get away with. Of course, I am not referring to individual occasions where corners must be cut, but this shouldn’t be glorified as a lifestyle. Children must be taught and trained. To teach children not to make beds because “they’re anyhow going to sleep tonight” is not giving them proper training. Maybe these are the same people who leave clothing on the floor in stores’ dressing rooms! When one has the right outlook, the message gets passed on to their children. It’s not wise to encourage kids to be lazy. As an aside, cooking in disposable pans is not a great idea since it’s known to be unhealthy. Maybe you can do it occasionally, but not as a habit. With respect to all Yiddishe mammes, E.W.

CAKE WITHOUT THE HEADACHE
(Inbox, Issue 103) As a teacher, I find it difficult to believe that a teacher who initially requested the acquisition of a specific size notebook or folder is now changing his or her mind. If it is indeed so, it is certainly a purchase the school or teacher must supply. I am also going to assume the pink highlighter is needed in addition to the green (or perhaps for a different teacher). Is your child verbally requesting the alternate item at the behest of the teacher, or do you have it in writing? Instead of voicing discontent to a (widely read) magazine, and perhaps misreading the situation, a personal phone call to the teacher would better help rectify the situation. R.S.
CUT THE JUNK
(Re: Oldies, but Oh Such Goodies, Issue 102) Thank you for all of your delicious recipes. I clipped many of them over the years, and they’ve become staples in my home. I want to bring something to your (and your readers’) attention in regard to the recipe for yapchik in the Sukkos compilation. The recipe calls for three-quarters of a bottle of
F E A T U R I N G

DELICIOUS
barbecue sauce. If you read the nutrition information on the bottle and do the math, it totals 157 grams of sugar, with the first ingredient on the list being high-fructose corn syrup! I am not a health nut, nor do I deprive my children of nosh and goodies. But why the sugar in a kugel? I actually make yapchik every Thursday morning (using a basic recipe, without the junk), let it bake all day, and serve it for supper and then for Friday lunch. If a kid eats a full portion, I am calm with the knowledge that they had a full serving of both protein and starch. M.F.
OF SCHOOL SCHEDULES AND OPINIONS
(Re: Hoping for Change, Inbox, Issue 102) My children and I agree that starting school later in the morning was an absolute blessing! Like the original letter-writer, I was disappointed that there were no long-term changes when school resumed. I hope that hanhalos will revisit this topic before setting up the infrastructure for the next school year. If children get to school well rested, each hour of learning is so much more productive. Also Waiting for Change
Dear Appreciative Mother, When I read the initial letter that sparked this conversation, I had in mind to respond, but I didn’t get to it. When I read your response last week, though, I dropped everything and sent in this letter right away. I believe you missed G.R.’s point. It is not about leisurely mornings and free nights. Furthermore, no school doesn’t have to mean no structure, and school is unfortunately a place where many girls do the opposite of thrive. I personally watched my daughters turn into completely differ-
ent girls during the COVID-19 era. As a mother, I enforced a structured routine, and my girls — usually squashed in school and denied the chance to use their abilities and individual strengths — truly blossomed. They davened each morning, helped with chores at home, and each one used the time to do something fulfilling. I couldn’t get over the contentment they exuded every night when they went to sleep. It was then that I realized there is something wrong with the school system. The rigid schedule and long, draining hours, in my opinion, are causing our girls to droop rather than thrive. I want to add that I see a very big difference between the yeshivah system and that of the girls schools. Teenage boys learn on their own for the most part, with one or two shiurim a day, and are then tested. The girls are sitting in one place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. listening to lectures. I don’t mean to criticize specific institutions, but I fully agree with G.R.’s sentiments. I hope those in the field of education reading my letter will find my point thought-provoking. Hoping for Change, Too
Last week, a letter from “An Appreciative Mother” suggested another mother homeschool her child because “it will allow you to set your own schedule and teach the kids as much or as little as you wish.” This is not true, and if someone homeschooled her child this way, she’d face civil and possibly criminal penalties, and could — if she insisted on following the advised methodology — ultimately lose custody of her children. New York requires parents who wish to homeschool their children to notify their local public school district within fourteen day of starting and to submit a curriculum for the school district’s approval.
The parent must also record her child’s daily attendance in each subject, a record of what was taught in each required subject, and administer tests so the child can be graded. The records and grades have to be given to the public school superintendent every quarter. A homeschooled child must have a minimum of 990 hours of classinstruction time a year in secular subjects, divided into 16.5 units of 60 hours each. There must be four units of English language literature and grammar, one of U.S. history, a half unit of U.S. government, half of economics, two of science, one of music or art, two of physical education, a half of health and wellness, and three of electives such as psychology, chemistry, foreign language, etc. Downtime like lunch does not count toward the 990 hours, but religious subjects can count towards the three units of electives. If you don’t remember having spent 240 hours a year studying 19th century novels and English language grammar in school, or 30 hours studying economics, you are correct. The state looks suspiciously at homeschooling, so it tries to make it difficult. It is not unusual for the school district to tell a homeschooling family they have not accomplished enough to continue homeschooling, only so the poor child can then be forced into a public school where she is two years ahead of all of her classmates academically. There are other options for parents who wish to educate their children differently from how the schools around them allow; there are states whose laws allow for different types of education. Of course, before following advice from a letter written to The Boro Park View, check with an attorney to make sure that what you are doing is legal in your state. J.G.

Stop Managing Start Living I was always managing (or not) my life and everyone around me. I was the sum total of my accomplishments. Slow day? I was depressed. Too much on my plate? I felt anxious. Sod Haadam taught me to live. To relax. To let go and be present in the moment. Not controlling, but trusting. Not with pressure, but pleasure.

PARSHAS LECH LECHA To Greener Pastures
“And there was a conflict between the shepherds of Avram and the shepherds of Lot, and the Canaanim and Prizim were settled in the land at the time” (Bereishis 13:7). Rashi shares the details of the dispute. Lot’s shepherds allowed his cattle to graze on foreign soil. When Avram’s shepherds reprimanded them, Lot’s men replied that since Avram had no children, and Lot was heir to this Land that Avram had been promised, he was rightfully entitled to the fields. Here the Torah immediately establishes that the Canaanim and Prizim were living in Eretz Yisroel at the time, and Avram had not yet received the Land. Based on Rashi’s description, it seems that this dispute was a one-sided monologue, with the response elucidated by the pasuk only. Why didn’t Avram’s shepherds offer this reply to Lot’s men?
AN AMERICAN GUEST visited the Chazon Ish. During the conversation, he withdrew an envelope from his pocket and placed it before the gadol hador. The Chazon Ish pushed it back toward the visitor, refusing to accept it or even check what it contained. The man attempted to hand over his envelope multiple times, but the Chazon Ish repeatedly returned it, until the man had no choice but to put the envelope back in his pocket and leave with just the gadol’s blessings. After he left the room, the Chazon Ish turned to a close adherent who had been in the room during the visit and asked, “Do you know what was in the envelope?” “No,” the adherent replied. He had indeed been wondering about the gadol’s strange conduct.

“You see, I know that this man is inclined to permit some dealings pertaining to his business that I consider completely forbidden. It is clear to me that this envelope contained a shailah related to this sensitive topic. The man hoped I would open it and read his question. “However,” the Chazon Ish continued, “regardless of what I would answer, the man would have his way. He would return to the States publicizing his own opinion, misquoted in my name. There is simply no way I could allow such a michshol to occur! That’s why I refused to accept his envelope…” Thus the man’s plans were dashed. A short while later, the Chazon Ish’s adherent met this visitor on the street. He stopped him and engaged the fellow

The man looked as if a mask had been pulled off his face, and his reaction made it clear that this, in fact, had been his plan. in conversation. “I know what you had in that envelope that the Chazon Ish refused to accept,” he said. “It cannot be!” the man said. “Not a soul knows what was inside.” The adherent then described the subject of the letter and outlined the man’s intent to misuse the opportunity to advance his personal agenda. The man looked as if a mask had been pulled off his face, and his reaction made it clear that this, in fact, had been his plan. “But how do you know?!” he cried, ashamed. “Are you a navi?” He could not imagine how his subtly conniving idea had been exposed. Even if someone would have guessed the topic of the letter, there was no way anyone could have known that he planned to publicly misconstrue the words of the greatest posek of the day. He was startled to learn that it was the Chazon Ish himself who saw straight through his ruse and averted this chillul Hashem. Chacham adif m’navi! * * * * * Indeed, there are times when it is preferable to refrain from providing answers or explanations. After all, any explanation could be interpreted in multiple directions, depending on the will of the person asking. Avraham Avinu knew this well. And he instructed his shepherds not to answer even a word to the shepherds of Lot. He knew that any answer they would give would be misconstrued as a heter so that Lot’s men would allow his cattle to graze in foreign pastures. He chose not to reply or argue back, but rather to simply cut off ties with his nephew and part ways. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.
Did You Know? We know that Avram’s name was changed to Avraham. Yaakov Avinu’s name was also changed when he took on the name Yisroel. Only Yitzchok Avinu’s name was never changed. Why is that? Both Avraham and Yaakov received their names from their parents. Yitzchok, however, was named by Hakadosh Baruch Himself, as the pasuk says, “Vayomer Elokim… v’karasa es shemo Yitzchok” (Bereishis 17:19).

“My twelve-year-old son is
a few months into his keyboard lessons and is more pumped each week to keep at it! Everything about the program is perfectly organized, making it so easy for us to let him run with it. He is looking forward to mastering the keyboard, and he sees that with Bassline lessons it can really happen!” – Rabbi B. They open the door and come bouncing down the steps. A group of excited young boys file in, and they each get seated behind a keyboard. They’ve been practicing all week and simply can’t wait to see what they’re going to learn and add to their skill set next! Now let’s move our gaze to the man in the front. The instructor, Shmuel Bassman, one of the top keyboardists in the Jewish music world, has been teaching boys to learn to play keyboard by ear for the past fifteen years. Many of those boys are playing professionally today. Overall, between in-person and remote students, Shmuel has given over the skill of keyboard to thousands! Talk to any parent of a BassLine Pro student; they’ll tell you that the confidence their child gained from his newfound ability has poured over to positively impact all areas of his life.
es. The keyboard lessons are also available via a USB that’s preloaded with all the lessons and materials. Just plug it into the computer and start playing! Whether you’re accessing your classes from the website or the USB, the whole system is sleek, fun and easy to use.
NOW — BASSLINE PRO IS AVAILABLE NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE VIA REMOTE OR USB LESSONS!
“I love teaching music… and have gotten requests over the years from people who live out of town. However, I didn’t have any options for them. Now I do, and it’s been amazing!” Shmuel tells us. COVID-19 gave Shmuel Bassman the impetus to finally set out to create an online keyboard course — something that was sorely needed in the Jewish world. There was simply nothing out there where a child could learn to play an instrument remotely in a kosher way and by learning the Jewish songs they love. Not everyone lives near a music instructor — actually, most don’t! And even if they do, not every parent can carpool a child to lessons. Plus, in-person lessons are more costly. BassLine Pro’s online lessons make learning to play keyboard so much more affordable. And — nope — you don’t need to have internet access or give your child internet access to be able to take advantage of the cours-

The Best of Both Worlds Just because the learning is remote doesn’t mean Shmuel isn’t there to guide the process. As with his in-person lessons, Shmuel Bassman is dedicated to making sure his students succeed. If your children are serious about music, they will learn how to play — and play well. There’s actually a learning advantage of remote lessons versus in-person lessons: the student can go back to the lessons and review as often as they want. The remote lessons have also opened up the opportunity to play keyboard to everyone! Girls can learn to play, and even adults too. Mrs. W. is one woman who wanted the satisfaction of learning to play the keyboard. She told us, “I feel like I have to publicize what an amazing music course Shmuel Bassman is offering! The lessons are given over in a very pleasant and crystal-clear manner, step by step. I especially enjoy the convenience of having it all at home. I must say — this is the way to go!” “So, how does it work if someone wants to get started with remote lessons?” I ask Shmuel. “After the first free week, there’s a small weekly fee as your child continues with the lessons … at a fraction of the cost of in-person lessons. You’ll have access to that week’s material for as long as you continue the lessons. Review the lessons as often as you like! There’s no commitment necessary — so there’s no worries if music doesn’t end up clicking with your child. And if your child does love music — in a matter of months, or possibly weeks, they’ll be playing songs they love with two hands and the beat,” he says. There are lessons available for every level, from beginners to intermediate, to advanced, to professional. As the your or your child’s skills grow, BassLine Pro will continue to take you up to the next level. Shmuel tells us, “The most gratifying thing for me is seeing a student go from not knowing how to play a thing… to playing beautifully in such a short time.”
The Best Activity You Can Find There are so many people who have musical talents and never get the opportunity to bring it to the fore. This is the easiest way to find out if music is something that really resonates with your child. And there’s one more big perk of learning keyboard versus other instruments. While, of course, you’ll want to hear your child play… if you don’t want to at the moment, they can always plug in the headphones! Are you a current online or USB student who thinks a friend would love BassLine Pro? Refer another student and receive two weeks’ worth of lessons free! (New students must stay on for at least two weeks; when signing up, let BassLine Pro know who referred you! Expires 10/31/21.)
About Shmuel Bassman Shmuel’s love of music stems from the time his father led niggunim with the family around the piano. Today, Shmuel has blended his extraordinary talent with professional expertise to create a musical empire where he can share this incredible gift with the next generation. CHAPTER 28 RECAP: After receiving a letter from his stepson, Aharon, in which he writes of his desire to meet Shabbesai Tzvi, Rav Shloime travels to Hamburg to check up on him. Aharon informs him that Rav Yaakov, a Sefardic rabbi who is one of Shabbesai Tzvi’s most influential opponents, is seeking to meet with Rav Shloime.
“W
hat about the other rabbis of Hamburg?”
asked Rav Shloime. Aharon shrugged. “Among the populace, the Maaminim have gained numerous followers. They’re very strong, and they get stronger with every letter that arrives. As for the rabbis? It’s hard to tell. There are some Kofrim and some Maaminim. Rav Moshe Abudiente, one of the teaching rabbis, is a staunch member of the Maaminim. Rav David Kohein de Lara, the former chief rabbi of the community, is one of the Kofrim, but he retired last year. The new rabbi, Rav Moshe Yisroel, seems to side with the Maaminim. I’m not sure what he really believes. Maybe he just doesn’t have strong enough arguments to dissuade the Maaminim, so he tolerates them,” “And the rabbis of the Ashkenazic community here and in nearby Altoona, which side are they on?” “Right now, they’re Kofrim, but with all the excitement in the Sefardic community — the dancing, the music, the celebrations — I think their resolve may be weakening.”

“I see,” said Rav Shloime. He stroked his beard and took a deep breath. “And what about you, Aharon? Where do you stand? To which group do you belong?” Aharon colored, and he did not respond immediately. “I don’t belong to either group,” he said at last, “but if I were forced to choose between one and the other, I would choose the Maaminim.” “Why?” “Because this long exile has to come to an end. It must. My whole childhood has been tragedy after tragedy. Our people have endured cruel persecution again and again. How long must this continue? I believe the Almighty will send Moshiach to save us. I believe the time has come.” * * * * *
Rav Yaakov Sasportas met Rav Shloime at the door. He was a lean man with sharp features and burning lugubrious eyes that knew a life of suffering. A large yarmulke covered his head and rested on his prominent ears. He gave his guest a smile of welcome, but the smile did not travel to his eyes. “How was your journey?” he asked once they were seated.
“As expected. I’m happy to be here.” “Good. I won’t keep you long. You have to rest. We can continue our conversation tomorrow.” “I had some time to rest in my son’s house,” said Rav Shloime. “We can speak as long as you wish.” “Do you know what I want to discuss?” “I assume it has to do with the news from the East.” “Exactly. I believe you met Shabbesai Tzvi. We are now in March of 1666. I believe you met him in 1662, four years ago.” “Actually, it was toward the end of 1662, three and a half years ago.” “I am very eager to hear your impressions.” “Well, he’s clearly a brilliant Torah scholar and a very charismatic individual. But it seems to me that he is unstable. He has long stretches of depression and then explosions of feverish activity. He claims he is battling the forces of darkness during his periods of seclusion and that his victories bring him illumination.” “Do you think he’s an impostor?” “I suspect that he may be an impostor, but my meeting with him was inconclusive.” “What is the situation in Pulichev, your own community?” “There are high expectations, but for the time being, it’s under control. I encourage my people to take a wait-and-see attitude, not to sell their homes or antagonize the gentiles.”
Rav Yaakov nodded. “The gentiles are watching us carefully here as well. Some of them even come into the Portuguese Sinagoga to watch the joyous dancing with the Torah and to hear the reading of the letters. We have to be careful.” “What is your opinion, Rav Yaakov?” “The man is an impostor. I may have been undecided for a little while, but now, there’s no doubt in my mind. The man has transgressed so many laws that it’s simply outrageous. Shocking! He pronounces the Shem Hameforash. He eats chelev and compels others to do likewise. He abolishes festivals and fast days and establishes new ones in his honor. Did you know that?” “I’ve heard about his outlandish behavior.” “Why, we just got a letter that he abolished the fast on the Tenth of Teves. He has no regard for the laws of the Torah. He thinks they belong to him, that he can bend them and break them whenever he chooses.” “How do you explain his acceptance among pious Jews?” “It’s all about Kabbalah. Every transgression, every violation of our holy tradition, he explains away by claiming that there are deep Kabbalistic reasons for his actions, that the rules do not apply to Moshiach. Everything is a deep mystery that only he understands. And the people are so desperate for Moshiach that they accept it.” “How do we know that he is wrong?” Rav Yaakov gave him a long look. “Rav Shloime, you really live up to your reputation. I can see you’re an intelligent and prudent man. You tread carefully. You’re not willing to accept Shabbesai Tzvi, but you don’t feel confident in coming out against him,” “That’s true.” “Well, let me tell you about Kabbalah. I’ve studied it all my life and with the most knowledgeable rabbis. Kabbalah is there to support our traditions, not to be used as a hammer to smash them down. Shabbesai Tzvi is making a mockery of it. It’s beyond outrageous. Shocking! Just … shocking!” A few moments passed in silence. Rav Shloime was the first to speak. “Rav Yaakov, you’ve convinced me,” he said. “I am not a student of Kabbalah, so I could not have an authoritative opinion on Shabbesai Tzvi’s rationalizations and excuses, although I did find them very suspicious. What are you expecting of me?” “An ally. I am fighting against a sea of madness. Every day, I send letters to the rabbis in Amsterdam, Constantinople, Smyrna, Yerushalayim and many other places. I encourage them to hold fast against this madman, not to allow themselves to be overwhelmed by the craziness he has unleashed. It seems that half my day is spent reading and writing letters. I need allies in Poland. You are an influential man. I’m sure you have Pulichev under control. However, many other communities could use your help.” “I feel a sense of relief. I’m ready to stand with you.” “We are in a battle for the soul of our people. The tide is against us. You and I, and everyone else who joins us, have to be pillars of steel.” “I correspond with many rabbis,” Rav Shloime said. “I’ll do my utmost to help.” “If you want to see what’s going on in Hamburg, come to the Portuguese Sinagoga this Shabbos morning. the health and welfare of Moshiach after the reading of the Torah.” “And does the rabbi accept this?” “He doesn’t have much of a choice, especially because he himself thinks that it may be true. In any case, the people would be furious. They’d dismiss him from his position, or worse, if he tried to stop them. Rabbi David Kohein de Lara, the former rabbi, walks out when they say the prayer.” “And you? Do you walk out?” “I do not. Everyone knows where I stand on Shabbesai Tzvi. I just watch the proceedings with a disapproving glare.” A thought occurred to him. “You’ll be next to me. You can show your disapproval as well, if you wish. You’re a renowned rabbi and scholar from Poland. Your disapproval may make a tiny dent in their confidence, as does mine.” “I definitely will,” said Rav Shloime. “I’m especially interested to see the mood of the people.” “You’ll see it. Most of them are delirious with joy, and they do not conceal it. This week, there’ll be a reading of several letters from Smyrna. There will be cheering and dancing. I don’t believe you’ve seen anything like it.” * * * * *
On Shabbos morning, Rav Shloime rose early. He and Aharon had arranged to go to the Portuguese Sinagoga together for the morning prayers. It promised to be a long, drawn-out
affair, which would eat away at a good part of the day and cut into his extensive learning schedule. By rising early, he could manage about two hours of learning before they left for the shul. He opened Mesechas Bava Metzia, which was his favorite volume of the Talmud; no matter what else he was learning, it never left his table. He found the page and leaned forward with excitement and anticipation. Then he plunged into the case of two people who came into beis din holding on to a garment. That was simple. The Mishnah stated that they should split it or its value evenly between them. But what if one of them subsequently grabbed it from the other?1 Or what if one of them donated the entire disputed garment to the shul without actually taking possession of it? Complications arose. Rashi and Tosefos were in conflict. The Rambam seemed to side with Rashi, especially according to the commentary of the Maggid Mishnah.2 The Gemara’s parallel to a disputed bathhouse was puzzling. For a long time, he was completely absorbed. He did not hear the children coming down and only noticed them when they jumped into his lap. He touched his forefinger to his lips with a conspiratorial smile. Then he put his arms around them and hummed a simple tune as he continued his learning. The children watched in silent fascination. A knock at the door startled him.

Who could be knocking this early on a Shabbos morning? Had something happened? He set the children down gently and went to open the door. A slender young girl about eleven years old stood on the doorstep. She smiled at him sweetly. “Good Shabbos,” she said. “You must be Rabbi Strasbourg, the grandfather from Pulichev.” “Yes, I am. And who are you?” “I’m Rivky Apotovski. I live down the street. My family is from Warsaw, originally from Apta in the Ukraine. I’ve come to take care of the children.” Rav Shloime stepped aside. “Please come in.” The girl stepped into the house and called out to the children. They came running and threw their arms around her. “Do you always come on Shabbos to help with the children?” asked Rav Shloime. “Sometimes,” she said, “but usually not this early. Frau Surkis is going to the Portuguese Sinagoga with the men today, so she asked me to come early.” “I see.” Twenty minutes later, Aharon and Yocheved descended the stairway. Yocheved was wearing her festival attire. She gave last-minute instructions to Rivky, and they left the house. To be continued… Bava Metzia 6a. 2Rambam, To’en Venit’an 9:12.

MUSIC-ASSISTED T H E R A P Y: DRUMS Music itself is inherently therapeutic, and its power only grows when we combine it with group therapy. In our music-assisted therapy, the coaching model is utilized to bring out the power we each hold inside. By understanding one’s emotional states, what is and is not in our control, the connection between the body and the mind, the impact of language and the innate ability to make choices — individuals experience higher levels of self-confidence and improved sense of self. Music in this form helps people to reach their own crescendo.
YOGA-ASSISTED THERAPY Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been have previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

Get Ready for Governor de Blasio? With the end of his second term at the helm of City Hall rapidly drawing near, Mayor Bill de Blasio has been putting out feelers regarding a potential gubernatorial campaign, one that could have him going head to head with Governor Kathy Hochul for the state’s highest elected office. Hamodia reported that de Blasio has said publicly that he wants to continue helping city and state residents as a public official once he leaves office in January. “I want to serve,” said de Blasio. “I’m going to figure out the right way to serve and the right time to serve.” With de Blasio’s 2020 presidential bid failing miserably, his ending up in the governor’s mansion in Albany seems like a long shot. “Osama bin Laden is probably more popular in Suffolk County than Bill de Blasio,” said Suffolk county chairman Rich Shaffer. “De Blasio, I would say, would have zero support, if not negative, out here.” The mayor isn’t the only one who is considering a run for governor, with possible candidates including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Attorney General Letitia James. Both would likely receive the endorsements of New York’s African American communities and more liberal state residents, demographic groups that had staunchly supported de Blasio in his previous runs for office at the city level.
Statewide Program Offering Financial Assistance to Landlords With many state residents given a reprieve on their rents due to COVID-19, New York has finally recognized another demographic that has been suffering — landlords. The $125 million Landlord Rental Assistance Program, known as LRAP, began accepting applications on October 7. It provides much-needed relief to owners of small- or medium-size properties whose tenants have not applied for the state’s emergency rental assistance program. It also provides funding for landlords whose tenants left an apartment with rent monies owed. Landlords may receive as much as twelve months of unpaid rent accrued on or after March 1, 2020, up to 150% of the Fair Market Rent. Governor Kathy Hochul described the program as a critical tool to

help New Yorkers recover from the pandemic, particularly small-scale landlords who have previously been ineligible for federal funding designated for property owners. Priority will be given to landlords whose buildings have 20 or fewer units during the first 45 days of the program. After that time, applications will be processed in the order they are received until the funding runs out. “Through this challenging period, New York’s small property owners have been carrying the added burden of unpaid rent debts,” said Senator Simcha Felder. “Their mortgages, taxes and bills had to be paid; interest and late fees still accrued. As we work to bring back New York’s strong economy, these hardworking New Yorkers deserve our protection and assistance — if not our gratitude.” According to City Limits, more than 1,600 landlords applied for the program when it opened last week. For more information on the program, contact the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance at 844-NY1-RENT from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., or visit them online at www.otda.ny.gov/programs/landlord-rental-assistance.

launched. The OMNY card, priced at $5, offers riders the ability to tap their cards instead of doing the MetroCard swipe, and they can reload their cards at designated retail locations and online. OMNY card holders can view receipts of their previous trips and real-time train schedules. The system’s card readers also accept digital wallets including Apple Pay, Apple Cash and others, reported the New York Post. While the MTA is touting the cards as the wave of the future, not everyone is greeting its rollout with enthusiasm. Unlike the $1 MetroCard, OMNY card currently has no monthly and weekly discount plans available, although the MTA has said it hopes to launch additional fare programs, including student discount and senior citizens programs, before the end of the year. MetroCards devotees will only be able to use their cards for a limited time, with the cards due to be retired in 2023 and other existing payment options remaining in place only until the program’s rollout is complete. OMNY cards will be available in stores and at vending machines and expire after approximately seven years. After that time, their unused balances are transferable to a new card for up to 24 months. Card readers have been installed on every MTA bus and subway station, with plans in place to bring the system to the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North in the near future. Curbed reported that the first OMNY cards were rolled out on Amazon and at Target, CVS, Duane Reade and other locations at the beginning of October. The cards are expected to be available at official OMNY vending machines and at a variety of stores including drugstore chains, dollar stores and other places that currently sell MetroCards.
De Blasio in the Hot Seat for Misusing NYPD Resources A 49-page report released last week charged Mayor Bill de Blasio with using NYPD resources for political and personal purposes, which are potential violations of the city’s Conflict of Interest Law. Hamodia reported that police officers were pressed into service to chauffeur the mayor’s son Dante to his Connecticut college and around the city, with an NYPD van used to move daughter Chiara’s furniture from her apartment to Gracie Mansion. The report also charged that police officers did security checks for a full year on the mayor’s Brooklyn home, even though no family members were actually living there, and that the city also footed the bill for portions of de Blasio’s 2019 presidential campaign, shelling out nearly $320,000 for flights, hotels, meals and gas, which has yet to be reimbursed. While the report did note that the NYPD’s Intelligence Bureau said that the de Blasio children should have full-time protection,

it also stated that an officer tasked with the family’s security deliberately attempted to obstruct the investigation and hampered efforts to gain more information. De Blasio made light of the report, counseling reporters to take it “with a big grain of salt.” “A lot of the details are inaccurate,” said the mayor. “A lot of the suppositions are inaccurate. The guidance I have received is from the NYPD.”
Dollar Tree Breaks $1 Ceiling Get ready to dig a little deeper on your next visit to Dollar Tree, with prices on certain items that may surpass the $1 mark. According to CNBC, Dollar Tree had already announced last spring that earnings would be down 60 to 65 cents per share, but its latest figures show that the drop in profits will actually more than double that amount, at $1.50 to $1.60 per share. Company CEO Michael Witynski said that supply chain issues and labor shortages have made it hard to keep stores stocked with merchandise at the $1 price point, pandemicrelated issues that are expected to continue into 2022. Speaking on a recent earnings call, Witynski told of a ship that had been chartered by Dollar Tree to bring goods overseas from China. The ship was forced to turn around when one crew member tested positive for COVID-19, delaying the shipment by two months. With the store’s low price point making it extremely difficult to absorb these rising freight costs, and with customers asking for a wider assortment of products, Dollar Tree will be offering merchandise priced at $1.25 and $1.50 in certain stores in addition to its regular assortment of $1 items. Dollar Tree isn’t the only budget retailer to be feeling the pinch. On the same day that Dollar Tree announced that it would be breaking the $1 ceiling, T.J. Maxx fell 3%, while Burlington fell 9%.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN visits the Arab shuk and the famous lighthouse in Acco with Miriam. From their conversation, Ariella realizes that she can’t stay on any longer at Miriam’s house.
RECAP: Ariella
Reb Elazar get’s Osher’s grudging permission to inform his parents that he’s home from the hospital.

abbi Reiness, holding his phone, paused as my father said something. “I just wanted to reassure you,” he said at last, “that Osher has been released from the hospital and that everything is fine, baruch Hashem.” He stopped to answer my father’s questions; I couldn’t hear them exactly. “Yes… yes... They caught the fox and tested it, and now they’re waiting for results. If it turns out that the fox doesn’t have rabies, then Osher won’t have to continue with the preventive treatment. The Health Department will be in touch with us.” My father continued speaking, and Reb Elazar’s face grew serious. “Yes,” he replied. “It really was an unfortunate story, and it didn’t happen here. It was on a yishuv where we went for Shabbos. I completely understand you, Rabbi Erenbaum, and b’ezras Hashem, things like that will not happen again, as much as it depends on us, of course.” My father had apparently asked him how it was possible for a fox to have bitten me and where exactly we were when it happened. “Alright then, so he’ll be in touch with you, b’ezras Hashem… Yes, he’s a very sweet boy. We are really enjoying him, baruch Hashem. Yes. Yes. Yes. Oh… no, no.” I had no idea what my father was asking; at that point, I’d stopped trying to guess. “Take care,” Reb Elazar concluded. “Lots of nachas.” His eyes smiled at me as he slipped the phone back into his pocket. “Nu, Osher? Did I pass inspection?” “Mine? Yes,” I said, though I didn’t know what my father thought of him. What does Tatty think of this strange man after his son disappears and moves into this man’s house very far from home?

Until now, I’d never really contemplated what my parents thought of my leaving home. They were aware that I was in Acco; that much I knew. And parents always worry about their kids; that I also knew. But suddenly, I began to think of all kinds of other details that hadn’t entered my mind in a long while. I wondered how things were at home, now that I wasn’t jumping around there all evening. Did any of my siblings take over tasting my mother’s cookies fresh out of the oven, which had always been my “job”? Did my father miss talking to me? I wondered if any of them really missed me. “No,” I said aloud. “Maybe yes?” Reb Elazar replied. “What yes?” I asked. “What no?” he shot back with a grin. “They don’t miss me.” “So that’s exactly what I’m saying: Maybe yes, they do.” “How did you know to say the opposite of what I said? Are you so sure that whatever I’m thinking is wrong?” I asked him. He glanced at me for a minute, and there was a glint of surprise in his eyes. “You’re very witty, Osher, and it’s cute. And no, I’m not at all sure that whatever you think is not right. Notice that I didn’t say ‘yes’; I suggested, ‘maybe yes.’ Because I wanted to tell you that with these kinds of things, it’s never worth it for us to be so sure about whatever we think. It’s always wise to leave our minds open to additional ideas.” He stood up. “Will you come down for supper?” he asked. “It’s not healthy to eat too much nosh, Osher, and for someone who has a bit of ADHD, it’s even worse.” He winked. “And for someone who has a lot of ADHD, it makes no difference anymore.” He smiled at me again. I think I’d surprised him a few times today with my comments. He walked to the door. “Still, if you don’t come downstairs to eat, we’ll send you up a tray of food, all right? I’m asking you not to stuff yourself with junk.” I smiled in return. The minute he disappeared, I took out a strawberry cream– filled chocolate from my bag. But then I put it right back.
“You again?” a voice asked from the side. Ariella turned around and saw that the same woman she’d met up with the day before was staring at her curiously.
* * * * *
Five days had passed since Ariella’s arrival in Acco, and she still hadn’t learned much about Osher’s place. There really was no good reason for her to go back to Bnei Brak just yet. Especially since she was actually enjoying it here. But where could she stay? The wind picked up, and Ariella tightened her scarf. She leaned on the low wall a few dozen yards down the block from the Reinesses’ home and let herself revel in the feeling of the wind pressing at her back. “You again?” a voice asked from the side. Ariella turned around and saw that the same woman she’d met up with the day before was staring at her curiously. This was their third encounter. Ariella stared back steadily, and their eyes locked for a few long seconds. “Yes, it’s me,” Ariella said finally. “This is no one’s private property, right?” “Not at all.” The woman’s tone was friendly. “But you keep coming by. Did you lose something?” “Oh, no.” “So maybe you are the one who is lost?” Ariella pasted a wide smile on her face. “No, baruch Hashem.”
“Baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem,” the woman agreed. “So, what do you keep looking for in this area? A place to stay, maybe?” Ariella’s mouth opened wide for a second. “You might have something there…” she said cautiously. “I guess you can tell that I like this area.” “And you want to live here. Like, buy a house?” Ariella chuckled. “No, I’m just a guest in Acco.” “How long do you plan on sticking around here?” “Um…about a week, maybe two.” “I rent out rooms, you know.” The woman leaned onto the wall next to Ariella as if the two had the most natural relationship. “If you want to stay with me, that’s fine. What’s your name?” “Ariella. Yours?” “Aliza. Do you want to see my house from the inside? You’ve seen the outside already.”

Ariella hesitated for a moment. “There’s no one else there. Just me. My husband died more than ten years ago.” “Mine, about four years ago.” Aliza was actually stunned into silence. “So you’re also…” “A widow,” Ariella finished for her. “Yes, yes.” Aliza sighed. “I don’t like that word.” “Who does?” Ariella murmured. She felt strangely detached from herself, as if this conversation were taking place in a different place, at a very different time, between two people she did not know at all. She’d never spoken to anyone like this. And she couldn’t stop. “Do you have children?” she asked in a low voice. “No,” the woman said. “Me neither.” The wind swallowed up her words. Still, Aliza heard
them. “You’re young. You can still have children,” she declared. Ariella couldn’t find words to formulate an answer. She also couldn’t figure out how old this woman was. Forty? Fifty? More? Less? “Hashem should help us all,” she said finally, in a near whisper. “Of course, of course He’ll help.” Aliza had very sharp ears. “You’ll see — you’ll remarry and have children. It will be good.” “Amen, amen,” Ariella said fervently. “Where are you from?” “Bnei Brak.” “Oh, Bnei Brak. That’s nice. I’m from here, Acco; I was born here. So, do you want to come inside to see my house?” “Yes, I’ll come.” If she needed to leave Miriam’s place by tomorrow evening, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to find somewhere to move to tonight. Especially since Aliza lived so close to the Reinesses.
picture? But 5687 was…ugh, I couldn’t figure it out. I looked for a pen on my night table to write down the year, and Shlomo moved. “Osher, enough already,” he mumbled, and I couldn’t tell if he was more asleep than awake. I quietly sat down on my bed and stuck the picture back under my pillow. So how could I figure this out without a pen? 5687. So ten years later was 5697? I bent down one finger. Ten years after that was…5707. I folded another finger down. Then came 5717. I folded another finger down. After a few minutes I had nine fingers bent down. That meant 90 years! Or rather, in two years it would be 90 years; now it was 88 years. Reb Elazar seemed to be about seventeen or eighteen in the picture. So today that would make him…105?! 106?! Out of the corner of my eye I glanced at Shlomo, and then took the photo out again to look at the two friends. I didn’t know who the person was, but it certainly could not be Reb Elazar — although it did look so much like him… In the picture his smile was wide, like someone who’d heard a funny joke and just could not stop laughing.
“Just one thing, Binyamin,” he said, and his eyes narrowed. “Not a word to my father about anything we spoke, okay?”
Acco, 1927 (5687)
Osher I could not fall asleep the next night. Maybe it was because I’d slept so much over the previous two days. I was drained after the whole fox story and couldn’t figure out how Shlomo seemed so refreshed. He went downstairs and then came back up numerous times throughout the day, hardly spending any time in bed. But at night, we traded places; he slept deeply, and I could not fall asleep. Again I stood at the window and looked out. It was probably 3:00 a.m., and the moon was large and clear, reflecting on the water. From afar, I saw an overturned boat and a small fire burning next to it. Someone must have gotten bored and decided to roast some fish. But the whole area just opposite the Reinesses’ home was completely empty. I sat down on my bed again and took out the old photo from under my pillow. I needed to put it back into the cabinet, and now was the time, when everyone was asleep. I wasn’t a thief, and I hadn’t meant to take something that was not mine. I looked at it again. Reb Elazar smiled up at me, and I wasn’t really able to decide if the wall I was seeing was this house or not. It didn’t really look like it; the stones seemed different. Maybe I should go downstairs to check them out better, I thought. Suddenly I noticed small, handwritten letters on the bottom of the picture. I brought the photo closer to my eyes and saw that it said Acco, 5687. I usually get confused by dates, but something here didn’t make any sense. When was that exactly? We were now in 5775, so how old was Reb Elazar in the

They stood together side by side, and Binyamin laughed like someone who’d heard a really funny joke. Suddenly he stopped laughing. “You’re not serious,” he said, his voice laced with alarm. “I’m actually very serious,” Zelig said casually, or at least he was trying to sound that way. “And it isn’t a mistake?” “What mistake, that they’re looking for me? Sure, they have no right to do what they’re doing, because they are not the ones in charge of this country. But they’ll find out very quickly that it’s a mistake.” “Zelig!” “Yes, Binyamin.” “It’s not you.” Zelig playfully bowed toward his friend. “Nice to meet you, Binyamin Reiness. I’m Zelig Shikovitzer, age nineteen, your friend and neighbor who is two whole years older than you.” “And so I have no right to give you mussar because of the age difference between us?” “Well, something like that.” “And yet you expect help from your ‘little’ friend.” Zelig smiled. “There are some things that only little people can do.” But Binyamin, who was usually the more smiley of the two, was very serious right now. “I… I don’t know…” he said. “What don’t you know? If you want to help me when I need the help?” “If I can be of help to you…” “Oh, you can. Sometimes you give the impression of being hesitant, but at the right moment you know how to do the right thing. I’ll never forget how you pulled me into the boat last summer just before I fell into the water.” His eyes began to burn with an unfamiliar fire. “Binyamin, don’t you think that now is the right time to do the right thing? If we don’t take our fate into our hands, what will be with us?” “Shhh… quiet,” Binyamin hushed him. “When we came

to Eretz Yisroel seven years ago, it was pretty calm with the Arabs. You know exactly why they started hating us.” “Bah!” Zelig scoffed. “They always hated us, and always will. Nothing will change that. In Russia it’s the same way.” “Right,” Binyamin agreed. “But still, we shouldn’t instigate the Arabs for no reason. When they weren’t upset, they didn’t actually demonstrate their hatred to us, and we lived together just fine. The fact that they feel like we are about to take over the land is riling them up. We are not allowed to instigate the nations of the world, Zelig! We’re in galus!” “And we want to get out of galus!” Zelig was almost shouting. “Not sit with our hands folded!” Binyamin studied his friend. “Really, now, didn’t you learn in cheder what the right way to help bring Moshiach is?” “Enough with this silly argument, okay? Let’s go inside.” Zelig pointed to the lot behind them. “You still haven’t said hello to my father since you came back. And you know he likes you.” Zelig did not turn his head to see if Binyamin was following him. He skirted the high wall and only stopped when he reached the long, steaming metal shack. Binyamin followed him in with a bowed head. “Hey, Zelig!” Mahmoud’s voice rose above the winnying of the six horses. “Hey, hey, and who’s with you? Binyamin? How are you, Binyamin?” “Baruch Hashem, doing well,” the seventeen-year-old murmured. “So, you came from Tel Aviv?” “From Chevron.” “Chevron, eh? For summer vacation. So nice, so nice. Zelig, your father is waiting for you with lunch. He prepared this yellow soup for you — some kind of Polish dish, I’m sure.” Mahmoud smiled and clapped the nineteenyear-old on the back. “And I’m sure there will also be some for Binyamin. Go on.” The two youths nodded their heads politely and turned right. At the other end of the yard stood a long, aluminum structure. Above the opening torn into the front wall was a wooden sign with letters artfully etched into it: Horse and Wagon House. Under that it said in smaller letters: The best care for your horses and all your wagon needs. Under that, in even smaller letters, was a long sentence in Arabic saying the same thing. The two boys could smell the soup even from outside the house, but a moment before Zelig’s father’s smiling face appeared at the door, Zelig turned to his friend and grasped his shoulder. “Just one thing, Binyamin,” he said, and his eyes narrowed. “Not a word to my father about anything we spoke, okay?” “Okay.” “If life is important to you.” “Your father’s life is very important to me. I would never want to cause him a heart attack.” “So we understand each other, right?” “Actually, I don’t think you’re understanding at all…” Binyamin began. But he was cut off with Mr. Shikovitzer’s jovial “Hello, there!” To be continued…

The thought of superfoods brings to mind magical potions, robust health in a single spoonful, and an eradication of disease and all that ails. But what are they? BY: SH E V Y HOL L A N DE R W I T H N U T R I T IONA L I N PU T BY: TA M A R F E L DM A N, R DN, C DE
Merriam-Webster recognizes superfood as a word, but there are no actual scientific classifications to it.
So how does a food get promoted to the rank of superfood? The distinction goes to a food that “offers high levels of desirable nutrients, is linked to the prevention of a disease, or is believed to offer several simultaneous health benefits beyond its nutritional value” (Harvard), or more simply put, “is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health” (Merriam-Webster). But the real, real answer? Often, hype. And that is probably why, though there are some constants on the list, superfoods often have the flavor of the month — those exotic discoveries that are on every health-conscious person’s menu one day, but soon go the way of the dodo. (Remember goji berries? Camu camu powder?) But while it turns out these aren’t necessarily nature’s magical cure-alls they are touted to be, for the most part, superfoods are super healthy, and as such, deserve a place on your diet plan.

The Boro Park View
The First Superfood Rich in potassium and liked by many, though not on most people’s power list, the humble banana was the first to be given superfood status around 1917. And who gave it such? For the most part, food marketing strategists. Cleverly marketing their newest import, the United Fruit Company highlighted the practicality of the fruit they’d brought to this side of the ocean. They shared with the public how this cheap and nutritious food, enwrapped in nature’s protection and ready to eat, is what people should consider to liberally include in their diet. The company printed pamphlets extolling the virtues of this golden fruit, which caught attention, and soon medical journals concurred with the findings, publishing research proving that a diet of bananas could treat health conditions like celiac disease. (The discovery of gluten as the culprit was still decades away.) Before long, the American Medical Association corroborated that claim too, and bananas became the symbol of health — a superfood indeed! Now the United Fruit Company had even more medical information to market, giving rise to a banana craze.

Acai Berries If you don’t know how to pronounce this, then you might be a bit out of health-vogue. Acai berries (aa saa ee, for the uninformed) have seen a meteoric rise in the health-conscious society mainly due to their high level of antioxidants, said to be as much as ten times higher than that of yesterday’s antioxidant king: blueberries. The phytochemicals in these berries include a range of beneficial anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins (flavonoids with rich antioxidant activity), and they are high in fiber and heart-healthy fats. CULTIVATING GROUND: Acai berries grow on palm trees native to South and Central America. They’re seen along the Amazon River estuary and also in floodplains. Originally, these trees were cultivated for their high-quality hearts of palm, and it was only in the recent past that their fruits gained worldwide fame.
you have to stay right near where they are grown, because their high fat content makes them so perishable that they barely last a day once picked. So while locals enjoy their pulp fresh in beverages and sweets, those of us farther out get them in powdered or frozen form. And that is why you generally see them in smoothies round our parts. FOR FRESH ACAI BERRIES,
Tamar’s Take: Acai is indeed extremely healthy and definitely out there as a power food. Research was done on acai juice, and there’s science-based evidence that it lowers lipids in the blood, and that its juice has a strong antioxidant capacity. Providing that it fits in your diet plan, with it’s healthy lipid profile, acai is a great item to include on your menu.
Pitaya We’ve been meeting these regularly twice yearly at our Shehecheyanu table, and we probably know them as dragon fruits, but pitaya is now becoming a more frequent guest at New York tables as it sidles up to acai berries in the superfood popularity contest. Boasting high antioxidant content and a low-calorie count despite it’s delicious sweetness, as well as a burst of vitamins and minerals and high fiber, these pitayas, available fresh (and costly!), are becoming very popular on the food scene. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that this prickly-skinned exotic fruit is a cactus plant. Native to Central and South America, the viney plant that produces these bright-pink beauties is now being cultivated throughout Southeast Asia too.
CULTIVATING GROUND:
WHAT’S IN THE COLOR? The red-fleshed pitaya, with it’s higher nutritional content, is the real deal. In addition to white-fleshed, pink-peeled pitayas, there are also dragon fruits with yellow and green peels, but those aren’t necessarily the ones the health fashionistas are after.
Tamar’s Take: Indeed, pitaya has been studied and proven to contain antioxidant powers and antimelanomal (cancer-preventing) properties. And the same is true for the peel: Extracts were diluted in a solution in test tubes, and their health benefits were also proven.

Kamut Kamut (the brand name for khorasan wheat, also known as Pharaoh grain) is as old as it is rich in health-boosting properties. Over the past two millennia, this ancient grain, twice the size of regular wheat, has been preserved from hybridization or modification. While it can be substituted for wheat flour in just about anything, it is an excellent source of protein, fiber, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin B1 (thiamin) and vitamin B3 (niacin). CULTIVATING GROUND: Khorasan wheat was originally grown in dry regions in Central Asia and Northern Africa. Today, Dakota and Montana, with their dry durum wheat (the wheat used in pasta-making) regions, make for the best cultivating ground in our country due to kamut’s sensitivity to humidity. Therefore, it is there, in the Northern Great Plains, that the U.S. kamut is cultivated. PART OF THE CLUB: Other grains that can be traced back to ancient civilizations include the popular new-old health fads like quinoa, buckwheat and spelt (barley, millet, amaranth and teff also carry this distinction).
Tamar’s Take: While kamut is definitely a good-for-you grain, and was actually proven to change the gut bacterial balance and effect better lipids, the same benefits can be derived from other ancient grains. Quinoa, spelt and millet also have that higher protein composition without the hybridization or processing of refined wheat flour, and so kamut is as healthy as the next ancient grain. Some who have sensitivity to gluten do a lot better on these.

Flaxseeds It’s been a while that flaxseeds have been popular with nutrition experts for their high nutritive profile, but the last few years have seen it become a health fashion item — something to sprinkle on salads and smoothies, mix into bread dough and muffin batter, or upgrade yogurts and oatmeal with its wealth of health. Called by some one of the “most powerful plant foods on the planet,” it’s earned its reputation, with evidence to prove the work it does in reducing risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. The three main benefits are its omega-3 fatty acids; lignants, which boast both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities, something flaxseeds are said to have at least 800 times more than the average plant food; as well as both soluble and insoluble fiber. CULTIVATING GROUND: While flax is native
to the region between eastern Mediterranean to India (and is assumed to have first been domesticated in the Fertile Crescent, as is khorasan grain), the crop is currently grown on about 12 million acres internationally, with the majority of production in northern Europe and Russia. GRIST FOR THE MILL: Since flaxseed in its ground form is easier to digest, nutritionists recommend grinding flaxseeds prior to ingestion to obtain its full nutritional benefits.
Tamar’s Take: Flaxseeds are definitely of superfood class and have been considered such for a long time. Both chia and flax have a robust nutritive profile and are high in ALA and omega-3. Flax is well-known for its high lignan (estrogenic anticancer components) count. However, since the omega-3s in these seeds don’t easily convert to usable DHA, those who are specifically looking at their omega intake would benefit from eating salmon instead.

The Steady Superfood Stars
Salmon What’s so super about it? OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS , which support
heart and eye health. Plus a generous helping of high-quality protein, vitamins B-6, B-12 and D, and selenium. The vitamin D factor is especially crucial for those sunless winter months, since salmon is from the oldest foods that naturally contain it.
Fermented foods While the research on its health benefits came out within the past decade, the practice is generations old. What’s so super about it? PROBIOTICS present in fermented foods (including yogurt and kefir) promote gut and digestive health. These live microbes restore the natural balance of beneficial and harmful gut bacteria, and help the immune system tolerate the bacteria the digestive system needs.
Tamar’s Take: Unfortunately, the majority of salmon on today’s market is farmed salmon. We would like to think they are healthy, but they’re actually loaded with contaminants that are a great disservice to our health, and by far outweigh the benefits for which we turn to this omega-rich food. It’s the wild Atlantic salmon we want to look for. Those are only caught fresh on this side of the ocean between May and September, and for the most part are available frozen, which compromises their taste. Though they have some mercury, they don’t have the plastic contaminants that make the farmed salmon so unhealthy, and even their paler (as opposed to the farmed salmon’s artificial) color is proof of a pure health food.

Avocados What’s so super about it? The avocado is one of the only two (the olive is the second) fruit that contains beneficial monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and decrease high blood pressure. It’s also loaded with nutrients like potassium, folate, antioxidants, fiber, niacin, and vitamins B5, C, E and K.

The Steady Superfood Stars Leafy greens What’s so super about it? Dark-green leafy vegetables — spinach, lettuce, kale — contain high levels of vitamins A, C, E and K, and many boast iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and B vitamins that promote optimal body function. They are also a high source of fiber and phytonutrients.
Nuts What’s so super about it? Nuts are loaded with beneficial monounsaturated fats, as well as omega-3 and omega-6, boosting heart health especially. On most top-ten lists you will find almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, cashews and macadamia nuts ranking high for their various health benefits.
Blueberries What’s so super about it? The deep-blue wild blueberry pigment contains highly concentrated anthocyanin, a flavonoid with a potent antioxidant capacity that protects the body against disease and age-related health risks, like Alzheimers.
Tamar’s Take: Though it’s always interesting to highlight just several superfoods in an article, we don’t want to limit our diets to those on this, or any, list. A varied diet of brightly colored fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds are definitely a great foundation of good health; don’t narrow them down to current health fads. (Of course, opt for produce grown properly, not those that are genetically modified or loaded up with pesticides.) Liberally dress up your menu with pomegranates, berries, cherries, dark-leafy greens (vary those too), nuts and seeds, and the right types of oils: cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive, avocado, coconut and flaxseed (just don’t bring them to a smoking point).

As a self-acclaimed food purist, I strongly subscribe to the GIGO (Garbage In; Garbage Out)1 concept in regard to health and nutrition. I’ve been known to hold forth on this topic quite enthusiastically, well past my listeners’ saturation points. According to my daughter, I rhapsodize, and she’s not wrong! Given my readily admitted biases, I fully expected that my research into scholarly articles on the topic of organic food would prove me right. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it isn’t so simple! Some of the questions I had were whether there is empirical data supporting the benefits of organic diets, as well as underscoring potential detrimental effects from conventional diets; what those benefits and/or risks are; how organic diets translate into health and well-being; and just how practical organic diets are for the typically large families in our food-centric frum community. Full disclosure: The more I read, the more I felt overwhelmed by information overload. But many peer-reviewed articles later, I was able to solidify everything I found into several general categories. Here goes!
Nutritional Comparisons A 2019 study published by the American Society for Nutrition found that consumers who adhered to largely organic diets were getting more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and ate less foods with saturated fats and excessive sodium (salt) or sugar. They were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and strokes. However, these results don’t necessarily mean that eating organic foods brings these benefits. People who eat organic foods are generally more health-conscious and make healthier food choices, be they organic or conventional.2 Interestingly, most organic and conventional foods have similar nutritional content in regard to vitamins and minerals; where differences exist, they are frequently small. That said, testing of organic versus conventional produce has revealed that organic produce often does have higher levels of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit oxidation, which can damage cells.
Just how attached are you to pesticides, artificial food dyes, flavors and flavor enhancers, antibiotics, hormones, and preservatives? (I am referring to antibiotics and hormones present in foods, not those prescribed by a physician. I am not opening that can of worms today!) If you are very attached to some or all of the above, I suggest you stop reading now. Really. If, like me, you can imagine living just fine without them, please, read on.
What Organic Foods Don’t Have It quickly became clear to me that I was asking the wrong questions. The benefits of organic diets are less about what organic foods have, and more about what they don’t have. October 13, 2021

Just how attached are you to pesticides, artificial food dyes, flavors and flavor enhancers, antibiotics, hormones, and preservatives?
Artificial food dyes are generally made with petroleum.3 There are many food dyes, but only nine are FDA-approved, while just six are approved for use in the European Union (EU). The nine FDA-approved petroleum-based dyes were approved for use in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. In 2010, the EU issued requirements for three of those dyes to carry warning labels, due to studies demonstrating links to hyperactivity in children. The United Kingdom had already banned those same three additives in 2008. To be clear, the studies linking dyes to hyperactivity are anything but clear. While some studies found links (though no proof of actual causation) in some children with ADHD, other studies found them in a relatively small percentage of all children. The general consensus seems to be that some children have a sensitivity to synthetic dyes and become hyperactive from them, but they are the exception, rather than the rule. I know; that surprised me too! The obvious question is: Why do federal regulations allow kids in the United States to ingest more food dyes than their European counterparts? The FDA standards are based on experiments done with lab animals, and the FDA has set acceptable daily intakes, which they determined according to the number of milligrams of dye that can safely be ingested daily based on body weight. However, these levels were established between 40 and 60 years ago, according to average intake then. Considering how the junk-food industry has exploded since then, the implications are sobering. Synthetic food dyes are everywhere. I read ingredients before I purchase anything 126

and can attest that these dyes are found in yogurts, puddings, pickles, lox, herring, drinks and so much more! Who is keeping track of just how much dyecontaining food we and our children are eating, and what the long-term effects are? (To be fair, I have been finding more and more foods with natural colors and flavors. I won’t start listing brands here, but kudos to the heimish brands that have been making these foods available, and to the consumers who asked for them!) This brings me to another class of chemicals I can totally live without: pesticides. Levels of pesticide residue in foods are monitored by a division of the USDA. More than 50 billion pounds of pesticides are used worldwide each year, but only .1% of those pesticides are found in food. Pesticides are known to spread and travel, so it is anybody’s guess where the other
99.9% end up. While organic farming prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides, plants can be exposed to them via soil contamination, as well as through airborne transmission. Organically grown produce has between a third to a half less pesticides than conventional crops. Only 2.6% of organic produce have multiple detectable pesticide residues, compared to 26% of conventionally grown foods.4 According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), pesticides can potentially cause harm to humans. They have been linked to numerous negative health effects, including gastrointestinal, neurologic, endocrine, reproductive and dermatologic diseases, and various forms of cancer. While organic crops are often contaminated with pesticides due to airborne or soil toxicity, they contain significantly less than conventional crops. Let’s not forget the hormones and antibiotics present in conventional meats, poultry and dairy products. As is the case of synthetic dyes, regulation of these additives in Europe are stricter than those in the United States. Hormones in foods have been linked to early growth, endocrine, neurological and immunotoxic effects, as well as some cancers. Overuse of antibiotics have led to antibiotic resistance. While physicians are cautioned not to overuse antibiotics, cattle, poultry and dairy farmers face few regulations. The differences in regulations in the United States and Europe are largely due to the EU regulations being precautionary, based on possible links, while U.S. regulations are based on proven risks. Since it is unethical to use human subjects to study potentially harmful substances, most studies are conducted using animals, making it difficult to prove harm to humans. There is also a powerful food industry lobby in the U.S., which has frequently opposed proposed regulation of synthetic pesticides and food additives. If you’re scratching your head trying to understand this, I assure you that you are in good company. Not to defame the good inhabitants of Chelm, but this seems right up their stereotypical alley! Color me confused.
Who is keeping track of just how much dyecontaining food we and our children are eating, and what the long-term effects are?
Setting Organic Apart
The regulations for organic farming and the marketing of organic produce and products are virtually identical in the United States and the European Union. According to information gleaned from both the USDA and the European Commission websites, farms must use only natural farming, fertilizing and pesticide methods for three years before being certified as organic. Regulations for organic farming include certification, use of approved organic methods and substances, organic seed, and natural methods for soil fertility, such as crop rotation. The use of synthetic pesticides is prohibited, as is the use of ionizing radiation, genetic engineering and sewage sludge. Poultry, meats and dairy products that are certified organic are prohibited from being treated with growth hormones and antibiotics, and animals must be “free range,” meaning that they are given organic feed and are allowed to graze for a significant

percentage of their food. In addition to all these regulations, all foods that are certified organic must contain at least 95% organic ingredients.
Cost Comparisons Organic foods are generally more expensive than conventional foods, averaging at 47% more expensive,5 but the range for individual foods is huge. For example, the organic honey I checked was 13% cheaper than conventional, while organic zucchini was a whopping 303% more than their counterparts. There are many factors that influence the price for organic foods. For starters, time is money, and organic farming practices, especially relating to pest control and fertilization, require a much larger time investment. Crop yields are lower, and without synthetic preservatives, spoil more quickly. Organic pesticides and fertilizers cost more than conventional ones, and organic certification and annual recertification are costly as well. Factories producing organic products also require separate facilities for those products. And despite the growing popularity of organic foods, organic food sales are nowhere near conventional food sales. Not even close. All of these factors combined result in the hefty price tags you are likely to find on organic products.
If you’re scratching your head trying to understand this, I assure you that you are in good company.
The Takeaway Well, you’re asking me? To me it’s a no-brainer; of course, you should go organic! Or at least all natural — but that’s my personal, highly biased opinion. To the women who participate in the Shmiras Halashon and Tznius Shiur. May the pleasantness of Hashem be upon you for all your matters. Your understanding of the opinion of my late father and teacher the Gaon Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l is correct and true, that he prefers covering the hair of the head with a kerchief (tichel) or hat rather than covering the hair with a modest wig, because there are poskim who forbid covering the hair with even a modest wig. (A non-modest wig is forbidden by halacha according to everyone). We heard the Rav say this several times.

Breakfast time for me as a busy mother often consists of a bite of a cookie and nibbles of my kids’ leftovers (don’t tell anyone). But when I do decide to take the time in the morning to prepare myself a nutritious breakfast or snack, it is so worth it! When I first began playing around and creating these different power bowls, I was immediately hooked. They are just that good and made me feel so much more energized! Packed with healthy and nutritious goodies, these bowls are the perfect morning meal or midday snack. It may take a few minutes longer than just grabbing a brownie bar or chocolate chip cookie, but it makes all the difference. And to top it all off, they’re so easy to top with the most delicious, healthy toppings. Feel free to switch them up and add more fruits, different nuts and more. Bon appetit!
INGREDIENTS acai smoothie strawberries
mango blueberries
granola peanut butter
DIRECTIONS Blend your smoothie ingredients, and transfer to a bowl. Top with your favorite toppings.
To prepare the acai smoothie, blend: 1 packet frozen acai (broken into pieces) 1 banana (sliced and frozen) ½ cup blueberries (frozen) ½ cup strawberries (frozen) 1 or 1¼ cups milk or juice Note: The consistency determines how tasty the acai bowl will be. The more frozen the ingredients are, the thicker the smoothie will be. Avoid letting the fruit sit out of the freezer for long before blending.

Sweet, sour or tart. Small, juicy and brightly colored. These succulent little fruits spruce up our culinary experience with a hefty dose of nutrients and a burst of flavor.
Tiny Bursts of Health High in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, berries are said to prevent and reduce symptoms of chronic disease. Here are some popular kinds and their nutritional contributions to your diet:
BLUEBERRIES: reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes Boasts one of the highest antioxidant levels of all common fruits
What’s in a Name? In Old English, a grape was called a “berie.” Soon other small, round fruits that grow in bunches were given that suffix. There was a blueberry, an elderberry, a cranberry and more. Interestingly, these different kinds of berries don’t have all that much in common, botanically speaking. From a botanical perspective, a berry is a simple fruit that comes from a single ovary. That technically makes even the tomato, cucumber and banana part of the berry family. On the flip side, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are not scientifically berries at all! A different way these tiny, juicy fruits are classified is by the prickly shrubs and vines they grow on. Thus, raspberries and blackberries, and many other berries we know, can be dubbed “bramble fruits.” If you take special interest in the study of berries, you may be considered a “batologist.”
GOJI BERRIES: promotes eye health A model of traditional Chinese medicine popularly moving westward BILBERRIES: reduces inflammation, weight and blood cholesterol Also used in sixteenth century Europe for treatment of diarrhea ACAI BERRIES: reduces blood cholesterol and symptoms of osteoarthritis Becoming increasingly popular in health food supplements CRANBERRIES: reduces risk of UTI and stomach infections Highly effective in juice form, too

On Air During World War II, British and US pilots were served bilberries to improve their night vision, essential for nocturnal flight raids.
You Berry Believe This… The number of drupelets, or little “bumps” on a berry, is actually connected to the number of times a bee landed on the berry flower to pollinate it.
By: T. Gestetner
The Berry Debate The consumption of insects is an issur d’Oraisa, even if the bugs are tiny, and particularly when an entire insect is eaten whole. Thus, produce that is prone to infestation must be thoroughly checked before it can be eaten. Awareness of infestation in berries in particular has limited their use in the kosher kitchen. Certain berries, such as raspberries and blackberries, are so difficult to check that many are careful to avoid them entirely. While some avoid strawberries altogether, there are certain authorities who permit their use when crushed. This is because a whole “berya” — a whole creature — cannot be nullified in the 1:60 ratio of “batul b’shishim,” but crushed particles of insects can be nullified. *The halachos of checking for infestation are complex. One must always consult with their rav or halachic authority to determine what may be eaten, and how. While most berries are Borei Pri Ha’etz, certain types — such as cranberries and strawberries — are Ha’adamah. Their bracha is so since strawberries grow on annual bushes that die from year to year, and the cranberry bush is lower than three tefachim, or nine inches, tall.
To your good health…and organized closets! Can berries affect the clutter in your home? A USDA Human Nutrition Research Center for Aging in Boston study posits that berries activate a natural housekeeping mechanism in the brain. They are said to clear up toxic proteins linked to age-related memory loss and mental decline, and help people stay more organized.
Fresh or Frozen? New research released by South Dakota State University claims that frozen blueberries may provide more disease-fighting antioxidants than fresh berries do.
Award-Winner If you are from the 94% of U.S. families who consume strawberries, you may have guessed which berry is most popular. Strawberries merit distinction as the first berry to ripen in spring. They are also the only fruit with seeds on the outside — they contain approximately 200 seeds each.
A Cherry Blow-Dryer While cherries aren’t botanically berries, it’s interesting to note that rain can ruin them as they grow. When summer rain threatens the crop, pilots fly low above the plants, blowing them for a quick air dry.
Note that craisins, the dried version of cranberries, are Ha’adamah, too!

Rav Avigdor Miller
ON SHEITELS Posted on August 3, 2021 by TorasAvigdor
Q: A:
Can a woman wear a custom made sheitel?
Let me explain something about this subject of sheitelech. I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings; I want to make everybody happy and wearing a sheitel is certainly a good thing. But you should know that some sheitelech look too natural. And therefore long-haired sheitelech should be avoided. I won’t tell you exactly what to do, but you must know there is a responsibility on women to be able to come before the bais din shel maaleh when the time is up and she should be able to say, “I wasn’t the cause of anybody who was looking at me too much.” A woman should never be in a position where she is liable to be blamed for causing men to look at her. It’s not her fault that she is a woman, but she has to be careful not to misuse that privilege. Her husband is the one who has to look at her; others should not look. And therefore if you are too careful with your appearance, it’s looking for trouble. I don’t say you shouldn’t look good, but to make it your business to look attractive that’s not right. At home many people are slovenly, they’re sloppy. The husband sees a sloppy wife at home but on the street she dresses to kill! It should be the opposite. At home you should dress up and make the best impression on your husband; on the street just be plain. TAPE # E-152 (September 1998)
