(Re: FYI: Berries, Issue 104) I very much enjoy your magazine. It’s very informative and nicely put together. In the previous issue, one of your articles had the information that the bracha for cranberries is Borei Pri Ha’adamah. Although there is such an opinion, most poskim agree that it is a Borei Pri Ha’eitz. Please print the information for public awareness. Thank you, A Reader

A NO-FAIL RECIPE

(Re: The Very Best Mommy, Issue 103) This article by Malka Katzman so accurately portrayed the inner battle and famous “mother’s guilt” we mothers often face. I too lovingly bake oatmeal cookies with spelt flour and organic sugar, prepare plates of colorful veggies to munch on, and spend quite some extra pennies on coconut oil, spelt flour, and occasionally, organic eggs. At the same time, I realize that it’s okay that my children might sometimes be eager to enjoy a “regular cookie” and will leave the sliced apples in their briefcase, going only for the snacks. As Yiddishe mothers, we can only try our best to feed our children nourishing, wholesome meals and snacks (and balancing it with regular treats too), while still being perfectly okay with the fact that they may not yet appreciate it. A heaping cup of tefillah, a generous portion of gratitude to Hashem, and a large sprinkling of simcha is a no-fail recipe for raising our precious children! Signed, A Fellow Yiddishe Mother

(Re: The Impostor) This correspondence is long overdue. In the past, some have voiced their opinion in a negative way about the exceptional and amazing serial The Impostor. The sentiments were: “Why hash up old tribulations, reminding us of our sorry past? Let’s move on with the present.” In truth, history constantly repeats itself, as Chazal say, “Masei avos siman l’banim” (Ramban Bereishis 12:6). Every generation has its detractors and disbelievers — including, but not limited to, missionaries in Eretz Yisroel or aboard. Sadly, even among our very own, not every scholar and preacher is genuine and sincere. We have to be aware of how important it is to choose as leaders specifically those who have clung to our mesorah without deviating an iota to the left or to the right. May we merit seeing the Ultimate Redemption speedily in our days. Eluzer Brieger Yeshiva Torah Vadaas

As a social worker who works with many of our precious seniors, I have learned about the great impact the community can have on our elderly. Recently, I was visiting a 97-year-old woman whose children live out of state. Knowing that at this age she is likely not to have any friends left, I inquired about her social life. “It’s great,” she replied. “Every Friday night, right after I bentsch licht, there is a knock on my door. It is the neighbors coming to visit with their kids. They sing for me and make me happy.” Another time I was visiting the home of an elderly woman who had no children, and I was surprised to see

pictures of young children hanging on her fridge. She related that they were pictures of the neighbor’s kids. They had adopted her as their Bubby. Befriending the elderly can really impact lives in a meaningful way. A senior who actually does have a social circle told me, “I appreciate when the young ones visit. When I talk with my friends, we just kvetch. When those from the younger generation visit, they appreciate my wisdom and advice, and inquire about my life’s experience.” We have a lot to learn from the elderly, and befriending them can really enhance their lives, too. Don’t underestimate what a few minutes of your time can mean to them — and to you! A Social Worker

YICHUD AWARENESS

I would like to raise awareness to a common yichud situation that many people are not aware of. This recently came up for me, and I was advised by Rabbi Y. Forchheimer to spread the word. Many people don’t realize that not all women and men can qualify as a shomer, even for their own spouse or child, when it comes to yichud. If a girl or woman is visiting a seamstress, practitioner or therapist in her private home and there is a man in the house — even if it’s the practitioner’s husband or son — this can pose a yichud problem if the practitioner does not qualify as a shomer. Additional people in the home may not help matters if they do not qualify as shomrim either. (Regarding the number of shomrim needed in a case where there are qualified shomrim, a rav should be consulted) Since every situation is different, and there are different factors that can make a situation permissible or not, a rav should be consulted. Thank you for the opportunity to write in. S.S.

I stole, I robbed — but I will never give up my religion! Never! Do as you please, burn my body, torture me; I will not stoop to heresy!” And to the cries of Shema Yisroel, Yossel’s pure neshamah joined the ranks of those who had given their lives al kiddush Hashem. The Jewish townspeople were perplexed. They asked the Shpoler Zeide, “How can it be that someone who stooped so low in his lifetime was able to reach such high levels of mesiras nefesh for the sake of Heaven?” The Zeide’s reply was short and sharp: “It is far easier for a person to give up his life al kiddush Hashem than it is to live al Kiddush Hashem and give up one’s pleasures and desires…”

* * * * * According to the Beis Halevi, this answers our question. With the Akeidah, Avraham was challenged with a greater nisayon than Yitzchok. Avraham would continue to live — without his precious son for whom he waited all these years — while Yitzchok was challenged with the one-time act of giving up his life al kiddush Hashem. Avraham was the one who would continue to live with the pain, and that’s why the Torah associates the nisayon of the Akeidah with Avraham Avinu. How fortunate we are to be descendants of Avraham, receiving this exceptionally elevated level of mesiras nefesh in our genes! Indeed, throughout the generations, we can see that Yidden are empowered to live their lives and give up their lives al kiddush Hashem. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Did You Know? As Avraham approached the mountain, the pasuk says, “Vayar es hamakom meirachok — And he saw the spot from a distance” (Bereishis 22:4). The Baal Haturim points out that “‫ ”את המקום‬has the numerical value of “‫זה ירושלים‬.” Also, the word “‫ ”מרחק‬is written without a vav and can be read as “marchik.” This shows us that the Satan was distancing the spot from before them, so they kept walk further to reach the elusive spot.

CHAPTER 29 RECAP: Impressed by Rav Yaakov’s take on the matter, Rav Shloime agrees to take an open stance against Shabbesai Tzvi. As he learns early morning to make up for the time he’ll be spending in the Portuguese Sinagoga with Rav Yaakov, a girl arrives to watch the children. Aharon and Yocheved accompany Rav Shloime to shul.

T

he street was filled with people streaming toward the Portuguese Sinagoga. Most of them were Sefardim, but there were also many Ashkenazim among the crowd. “We got a letter from my father this week,” Yocheved said to Rav Shloime as the three of them walked to the synagogue. “He heard you were coming to visit, and he asked me to send you his best regards. He said he’s going to write to ask when he can pay you a visit in Pulichev. He misses you.” Rav Shloime smiled with pleasure. “And I miss him. Send him my regards and tell him he’s welcome to come anytime he wishes. He should just write to us, and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.” He paused. “Can I ask you a question?” “Of course.” “What do you think of this business? You know, with Shabbesai Tzvi. I discussed this with Aharon. I’m sure he told you.” “Yes, he did. Well, I’m also a believer. Maybe more than he is.” “You believe that Shabbesai Tzvi is Moshiach?” “I do. I know that you’re very skepti-

cal, but in my heart, I can feel the end coming. The whole world has accepted him. It must be true. I’m so excited.” “Not the whole world, Yocheved,” said Aharon. “The rabbis of Yerushalayim, the rabbis of Constantinople and some of the elder rabbis of Smyrna don’t accept him. Rabbi David Kohein de Lara doesn’t accept him. Rabbi Sasportas doesn’t accept him.” “True,” said Yocheved, “but there will always be some people against everything. According to what I hear, most rabbis accept him.” They continued walking in silence. There was nothing more to say. When they arrived at the Portuguese Sinagoga, Yocheved went up to the women’s gallery, and Rav Shloime and Aharon headed to the seats Rav Yaakov Sasportas had reserved for them. Rav Shloime had not heard the beautiful Sefardic liturgy since his previous visit to Hamburg, and he enjoyed it immensely. The synagogue was packed with congregants, guests and onlookers. There was not even any standing room left. The air was stifling, and even though it was a crisp March day, the windows were opened. Before the Torah was removed from the holy ark, a man rose to make an

announcement. “Every week, after the reading of the Torah, we say the prayer for Rabbi Shabbesai Tzvi, our Lord and Master, the long-awaited Moshiach, may the Almighty protect and support him. Unfortunately, as you well know, some people in the synagogue walk out during the prayer.” This statement angered many people in the synagogue, and they responded with hoots and jeers. The man raised his hands in a request for silence. “This is disrespectful, and it cannot be tolerated. So we’ve instituted a new rule. No one is permitted to leave during the prayer.” After the reading of the Torah, the chazan began reading the lengthy prayer for Shabbesai Tzvi. Immediately, Rabbi David Kohein de Lara, an elderly man with a snow-white beard, fierce eyes and a regal bearing, walked toward the back. When he reached the door, his way was barred by several stout men with arms folded over their chests. “Step aside!” he commanded. “Let me out!” “You can’t go out,” said one of the men. “The doors are locked.” “Then unlock them!” “We will not unlock them. Everyone is required to listen to the prayer and answer amen.” “I will not listen to this travesty!” shouted the old rabbi. “Let me see if the doors are really locked.” The reading of the prayer was inter-

rupted as everyone turned to observe the confrontation at the door. The aged rabbi tried to push through the men obstructing his passage, but they grabbed him and lifted him off the ground. Then they carried him to the front where he would be forced to listen to the prayer against his will. They did not release him from their grip. The manhandling of the old rabbi caused an uproar in the synagogue. Many of the believers were also disciples and followers of their beloved former rabbi, and they screamed at those restraining him to take their hands off him. Reluctantly, the burly men put him down. As the prayer resumed, the rabbi turned and walked to the back again. He tried to open the door, but it was indeed locked. He remained there standing with his back to the shul, his head leaning against the doors, his hands over his ears. * * * * *

Meanwhile, in Constantinople, the fabled capital of the Turkish Empire, reports of the imminent arrival of Shabbesai Tzvi sparked great excitement. Commercial activity among the Jewish merchants of the capital came to a virtual halt. The shuls were filled from morning to night with people fasting and praying to the Almighty, imploring Him to accept their repentance and permit them to be redeemed by the victorious Moshiach. Many gematriyos proving that Shabbesai Tzvi was indeed Moshiach were circulating among the people. One of the most popular revealed that the numerical value of the words Shabbesai Tzvi was equal to the numerical value of the words Moshiach Ha’amiti, the true Moshiach. Several of the rabbis of Constantinople, however, reacted to the news with dire foreboding. Having been in continual contact with the rabbis of Eretz Yisroel and Smyrna, they firmly believed that Shabbesai Tzvi was a false Moshiach, and the enthusiasm concerned them greatly. On more than one occasion, they had seen the armies of the sultan ruthlessly crush even minor insurrections. How would the sultan react to this brazen impostor who promised to take the imperial crown and place it on his own head? How long could the sultan be expected to tolerate the widespread upheaval among his Jewish subjects and the interruption of commercial activity so vital to the economy of the Empire? Shabbesai Tzvi was gravely endangering the Jews of Constantinople, these rabbis warned their people in desperation. But it was to no avail. An irresistible wave of enthusiasm engulfed Constantinople, and the people prepared to greet their new king. At this time, a young Kabbalist recently arrived in Constantinople greatly reinforced the people’s belief in Shabbesai Tzvi. His name was Moshe Saraval of Brussa, and in many ways, he was similar to Nattan Haazati. He was reputed to be a man of remarkable powers, able to tell people the roots of their souls and the sins they committed in their youth. Moshe Saraval claimed to be a gilgul of Rabi Shimon bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar, and he devoted much of his time to writing a new version of the Zohar, especially suited for the times of Moshiach. He would gather young rabbis and other prominent people, and to the accompaniment of musical instruments, he would sing hymns of praise to Shab-

besai Tzvi. After singing for a while, he would dance gracefully about the room until he would fall into a trance, his limbs twitching uncontrollably. Then he would speak in the Aramaic style of the Zohar, revealing the most startling mysteries and proclaiming that Shabbesai Tzvi was the true Moshiach. Two scribes would scribble

portant members of the Jewish community of Constantinople who had vied for the privilege of escorting the king onto the shores of Constantinople. The joy of the people knew no bounds. Hundreds of children filled the air with the sweet sounds of their voices as they sang the praises of the Almighty for making this great and glorious day come to pass. As soon as Shabbesai Tzvi stepped foot on land, the Turkish captain barked an order, and the soldiers rushed forward to surround the new king. They formed a cordon around him, not letting any members of the royal entourage stand beside their leader. The captain dismounted and approached Shabbesai Tzvi. “Is your name Shabbesai Tzvi?” he asked. “Yes.” “By order of the Grand Vizier Kiuprili Fazil Ahmed Pasha, I hereby place you under arrest,” said the captain. Fazil Ahmed Pasha was the second grand vizier of the Kiuprili family, succeeding his father, Kiuprili Mehmet Pasha. “You are now a prisoner of the Crown.” “But you have no right to arrest me,” protested Shabbesai Tzvi. “I have committed no crime.” The captain’s right hand shot out and struck Shabbesai Tzvi a vicious blow across the face. Shabbesai Tzvi was flung to the ground, blood flowing from his nose. “Be silent, you miserable dog!” hissed the captain. “Wait until you are face to face with the Grand Vizier before you tell him what he may or may not do. Place the prisoner in chains!” Two soldiers grabbed Shabbesai Tzvi’s arms while a third clamped the irons on his wrists. The other soldiers drove the crowd back with swinging clubs. The people watched Shabbesai Tzvi’s arrest in consternation, and the sound of weeping arose from among them as their king was led away.

How long could the sultan be expected to tolerate the widespread upheaval among his Jewish subjects and the interruption of commercial activity so vital to the economy of the Empire? rapidly as he spoke, for when he awoke from his trance, he never remembered anything he had said. Moshe Saraval’s fame as a real prophet spread quickly and convinced people that the gift of prophecy had returned to the world. Before long, many others, including women and children, appeared in the squares of Constantinople with stories of visions that Shabbesai Tzvi was the true Moshiach and that the long exile was finally coming to an end. * * * * *

Late in the month of Shevat, the greater part of the Jewish community of Constantinople came out to welcome the new king. Densely packed crowds lined both shores of the Bosporus as the ship carrying Shabbesai Tzvi and his royal entourage sailed into the harbor. The brilliant winter sun reflected off the white-clad figure of Shabbesai Tzvi as he stood on the foredeck holding the Torah scroll he had carried with him ever since his expulsion from Salonika. A detachment of Turkish soldiers, led by a mounted captain, also waited on the shore. The people assumed the soldiers had come as observers from the qadi of Constantinople. The ship dropped anchor, and a long skiff pulled up alongside the ship to receive the new king. The oarsmen of the skiff were some of the most im-

Hochul Releases $25 Million in Security/Hate Crime Funding Six days after Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would be allocating an additional $25 million on top of the previously allocated $43 million to secure religious institutions and other vulnerable sites, the funding has been released, with beneficiaries including shuls, yeshivos, community centers, summer camps and museums. Hamodia reported that Hochul promised the extra funding at Lower Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage, noting that the site bore testament to the horrors that can occur when hate is allowed to flourish. “I don’t want a single New Yorker to ever, ever have the fear that’s in the hearts of too many people from our Jewish community, our Asian community, our African American community or any other community that feels they’ve been under siege,” said Hochul. A statement by Agudath Israel of America praised the governor for acting swiftly to release the funds. It recognized that multiple yeshivos, summer camps and other nonprofits who were included in the additional $25 million allocation were receiving security funding from the state for the first time. Hochul acknowledged that inexplicable delays by the Cuomo administration had kept the original $43 million originally committed to security and hate crime prevention from being released to its intended recipients. “I cannot tell you how many hundreds of upward of billions of dollars have not been spent for whatever reason,” said Hochul. “The dysfunction of the last few months before I inherited this position is staggering. “Money for the safety of our schools and yeshivos and to keep people secure where they live was not going out,” added Hochul. “I don’t know why, I don’t care to know why, I just want people to know that I’m getting that money out there as quickly as humanly possible.” Expressing his gratitude to Hochul, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, the grandson of four Holocaust survivors, emphasized the importance of combatting hate crimes at their roots, noting that the seeds for mass genocide were sown long before any concentration camps were opened. “The Holocaust began with what you might consider small stuff: vandalism, discrimination, graffiti sprayed on houses of worship, broken windows, random physical attacks, name calling, and so on,” said Eichenstein. “When these despicable acts were not properly addressed, when nobody called out the perpetrators, when nothing was done to protect the victims, that’s when the attacks

BDE: Legendary Satmar Dean and Spokesperson Rabbi Hertz Frankel Longtime Boro Park resident Rabbi Hertz Frankel, who served as the English principal for the Satmar girls school for decades, passed away last Shabbos at the age of 90. Well-known for his exceptionally close relationship with the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, zt”l, despite coming from a non-chassidic background, Rabbi Frankel was tapped by the Rebbe himself to head up the Bais Rochel school in the late 1950s. Boro Park 24 reported that during his many years with the school, Rabbi Frankel oversaw the chinuch of thousands of students, advocating passionately on their behalf to ensure that they received a solid educational foundation. A musmach of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath, Rabbi Frankel ultimately became an institution within Satmar. In addition to making a name for himself as a principal, Rabbi Frankel also served as Satmar’s unofficial spokesperson in the battle to ensure that Yiddishkeit endured in America in the post-war years. In his memoir The Satmar Rebbe and His English Principal, Rabbi Hertz shared stories of conversations held between the Rebbe and then-president Jimmy Carter as well as high-level discussions with rabbanim on critical halachic matters. Rabbi Frankel and the Satmar Rebbe also met with President George W. Bush in the Oval Office in April 1990. Several years ago, Rabbi Frankel moved to Lakewood to be closer to his children. The levayah was held there last Sunday morning at Bais Mordechai, with burial taking place on Har Hamenuchos.

FDA Authorizes Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Booster Shots Booster shots to protect against COVID-19 are fast becoming a reality, with the Food and Drug Administration voting unanimously to authorize an additional dose for those who have previously received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccinations. The New York Post reported that experts expressed concern about the long-term effectiveness of the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine. A study released last week of 620,000 military veterans who received the J&J shot showed that its effective protection tumbled from 88% in March to a paltry 3% in August. “J&J is a very good vaccine,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. “I also believe it’s probably a two-shot vaccine. It’s really urgent that people get that second shot pretty quickly.” The FDA is recommending that anyone over age 18 who got the J&J shot get a second dose within two to six months later. According to the Center for Disease Control, 90% of the 15 million Americans who have gotten the J&J vaccine were inoculated in the last two months. While both the Moderna and the Pfizer vaccines also showed a drop in protection over time, their numbers were considerably higher. Individuals who received the Moderna shot saw its effectiveness dropping from 92% to 64%, with the Pfizer shot’s protection falling from 91% to 50% over the same time period. Also approved by the FDA was a half-dose booster for those who received the Moderna vaccine at least six months ago. Eligibility guidelines for the Moderna booster mirror those of the Pfizer booster, which was approved last month for those over 65, those ages 18 to 64 with underlying medical issues, or those whose jobs or life circumstances put them at greater risk of infection.

VIN News reported that the incident took place at about 12:30 p.m. last Friday afternoon on 47th Street near 15th Avenue. The victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car when a Hispanic man wearing dark clothing and a face mask approached the vehicle and reached inside the driver’s side window as he attempted to force his way into the car. A second masked man joined the struggle within seconds, and after releasing the car’s trunk latch, the two made off with a pair of black duffle bags that were estimated to contain nearly $1.2 million in assorted jewelry. Boro Park Shomrim released footage of the attack, which police said involved a gun. They described the suspects as Hispanic men in their thirties and said that they fled the scene in a black Ford Taurus with temporary New Jersey license plates. Anyone with any information is asked to call detectives at the 66th Precinct at 718-8515603.

Mayor Responds Positively as Teacher Vaccine Mandate Creates Problems for Bilingual Special Needs Students The New York City Department of Education’s requirement for all teachers to be vaccinated has launched a wave of problems for some students who found themselves facing a language barrier that hampered communication with their new substitute teachers. Boro Park 24 reported that the problem affected several local families, including one Yiddish-speaking child whose Individualized Education Plan spells mandates that he have a teacher who is fluent in both Yiddish and English. When his regular teacher was placed on leave until she was vaccinated, the boy, who is autistic and nonverbal, was sent to a classroom with a Russian-speaking teacher. Mayor Bill de Blasio was informed of the problem by a Boro Park 24 reporter during a press conference, and he acknowledged that while the city has a largo pool of substitutes who are fluent in many languages, proper connections need to be made to ensure that students are receiving instruction in a language they understand. The mayor also said that he was receptive to hearing about specific situations, asking Boro Park 24 to share any further issues with City Hall representatives. “We can follow up and make sure those families, those children, get what they need, and we continue to hire, so if we see a very specific need that is not filled right now, we will go and find someone who can provide that help for the child,” said de Blasio. Overcrowding is another issue that has arisen in light of the vaccination mandate, as special education students are being moved around to make up for missing teachers, leaving some classes with more than the maximum number of six children. The mayor agreed to pass along a suggestion that teachers reach out to parents to update them on their children’s well-being amid all the shuffling that has transpired since the vaccine mandate went into effect.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT RECAP: Aliza

invites Ariella to move into her home.

Osher realizes that the photo he found cannot be of Reb Elazar, because it was taken nearly ninety years earlier. In Acco of 1927, Zelig Shikovitzer asks his friend Binyamin Reiness to help him with his plan against the Arabs of their city.

“W

elcome!” Mr. Shikovitzer said warmly. “Binyamin, it’s so good to see you! We haven’t had a visit from you since Pesach. I’m sure the whole family was happy that you’ve come, huh? When did you get back from yeshivah?” “Last night.” “At night? You weren’t afraid?” “We left in the morning, and the automobile was escorted by a British policeman.” “The fellahin are cowards, Tatty,” Zelig added scornfully. “That’s not exactly true,” his father said, glancing outside. “In any case, you should speak in a lower voice. Nu? Did you bump into Mahmoud?” “He bumped into us.” Zelig chuckled and took his regular seat at the table. “He already told us there’s a delicious Polish soup for lunch. When will he remember once and for all that it’s a Russian soup?” “Good question…” Mr. Shikovitzer rubbed his blackened hands on the blue apron that he wore and pointed to the metal oven in the corner. “I kept it hot especially for you.” “You look worried today, yeshivah bucher’l.” Zelig’s father patted his son’s friend on the shoulder. Binyamin’s normally cheerful expression was more thoughtful than usual, and he was staring blankly in the direction of the large oven. “Binyamin?” Zelig asked. “Is everything okay?” “B’ezras Hashem,” his younger friend answered with a forced smile, so different from his usual broad grin. “Thank you very much,” he said, as a steaming bowl was set before him. “Start to eat before it gets cold,” Zelig’s father said. After serving his son a portion, he sat down

at the table. “So your parents were happy to see you, Binyamin, or what?” “Baruch Hashem, they really were.” “Do they feel well? Your father has been looking a bit pale in recent days.” “I think he’s fine.” Binyamin made a bracha and slowly sipped the soup. “It’s a bit hard for him with the work, and the weather is very different from what he was used to at home,” he said. “Well, of course.” Shikovitzer wiped his brow. “It makes no difference whether you’re out on the open sea or working next to a hot oven — the hot sun of Eretz Yisroel is much hotter than the sun on the banks of the Black Sea… And your brothers at home, they were cer-

tainly happy when you came home, I’m sure… Will your younger brother go to yeshivah, like you?” “We’ll see.” Binyamin stirred his soup. “But for now, he’s too young to travel so far away.” “You know, I saw him. He helps your father with the fishing, right?” “Yes.” “The port has not been as busy in the last year or two,” Zelig’s father said. “Since the Haifa port grew so busy. I hope it won’t affect the parnassah here in the city. And what —” A sudden move by Zelig cut him off. The youth leaped out of his seat and grabbed his bowl and spoon. “Tatty, I

wasn’t here,” he said from the closest window. “You ate only with Binyamin, all right? That’s what you should tell them.” And with a hasty jump, he disappeared through the window. His father stood up. “What was that all about?” he asked. Binyamin did not know whom he was asking, so he remained silent. “Who’s he running away from?” Binyamin shook his head. What did you do to me, Zelig? Do you really expect me to stay quiet now? That’s a terrible option. Or do you expect me to be the one to tell your father everything? That’s an even worse option than the first one. Mr. Shikovitzer was quiet for a few

long moments “I don’t hear anything,” he said after the heavy silence. Even their spoons were no longer clinking in their bowls. “What scared him so badly? Do you hear anything?” Binyamin shook his head in the negative. “Still,” Shikovitzer said as he glanced out the window, “even if he can persuade me that he wasn’t here, he won’t be able to persuade Mahmoud, who met you outside.” “You can tell them that he came, and that he left a while ago.” Binyamin could barely get the words out. “Them?” Shikovitzer’s deep eyes did not leave Binyamin’s face. “Whom?” “Whomever he meant,” Binyamin whispered. “Let’s be quiet now,” Shikovitzer said, suddenly very practical. “Eat the soup, Binyamin, eat. What’s the matter — it’s not spiced well enough?” Anything I’ll eat now will taste like mud, Binyamin wanted to say. Instead, he stirred his soup some more, and smiled wanly at the worried man. “It’s excellent,” he said finally. “Good, I’m happy.” Shikovitzer straightened and dipped his spoon into his own bowl. “So how’s your younger brother, Binyamin? Is he also going to learn in Chevron?” “He…” Binyamin wasn’t sure what to say. They’d already had this conversation, just a few minutes ago! “He’s still too young. But maybe he’ll follow me some time in the future.” “Good, I’m happy for your parents,” Zelig’s father said. His voice sounded a bit funny. But Binyamin could not dwell on trying to figure out what was unusual, because by now they both heard the English voices in the yard mingling with the neighing of the horses. They glanced at each other for a quick second, and then the older man stood up and walked to the doorway. “Mahmoud’s dealing with them,” Binyamin said quietly. “What?” Mr. Shikovitzer stopped. “Mahmoud is talking to them. And it won’t look good if you suddenly go out to them. It will look too… defensive.” “You’re right,” Shikovitzer said, and returned to his seat. His face was gray, and Binyamin couldn’t bring himself to look at the older man. Instead, he

forced himself to sip his soup until the bowl was finished. “Hey, Yitzchak!” Mahmoud’s voice wafted in from the yard. “What?” Shikovitzer shouted back, standing up again. Binyamin watched him turn to the door. “This officer wants to fix the wheel on his carriage. And something on his horse’s hoof isn’t good either!” “Oh, so they just came to get some service,” Binyamin murmured. Shikovitzer turned to him. “I’m not so sure,” he murmured back. He quickly stepped out of the house. Binyamin remained at the table, wondering if he should leave now. Perhaps not; any extra movement could attract unneeded attention. He pushed aside his empty bowl and swayed back and forth in his chair, a habit he’d had since age five and which he’d never been able to kick. The oven was steaming, and he could see reddish pieces of iron inside it. Would they not get too burned? He stood up and grabbed a pair of large wooden tongs, which were blackened from years of fire. Should he take the iron pieces out? If he understood correctly, it was a carriage shaft in the oven. Zelig’s father had been an expert blacksmith back in Europe, and fortunately, his skills were no less in demand in this small, hot land where they now lived. The already dim room suddenly darkened even more. Binyamin turned to the doorway, tongs in hand, and saw what was blocking the light: Mr. Shikovitzer and four British soldiers. One of them looked to be of a higher rank than the others. All eyes were on Binyamin. “Who is this?” the high-ranking officer asked, pointing to Binyamin. “A neighbor’s son,” Zelig’s father replied. “He sometimes helps me. No, Binyamin, don’t take it out yet!” The officer murmured something in English, and one of the soldiers replied; he seemed to be translating the exchange. “All right,” the boy said, dropping the tongs. The Brits entered with their trademark arrogant strides. Without a word, they stood in a row in front of Binyamin. Only the high-ranking officer sat down; he took the chair Mr. Shikovitzer had vacated just a few minutes before.

“Your name!” he barked. “Binyamin Reiness.” The officer murmured something to the other soldiers, and one of them took over the questioning. “Where do you live?” “On Salah-a-Din Street.” “What are you doing here?” “I came to visit my neighbor.” “Were you born in Palestine?” “No, in Russia.” The soldier turned to Shikovitzer. “You as well?” “Yes.” “Did you know each other from there?” “No,” Binyamin and Shikovitzer said together. The officer said something in English, and the soldier studied the man and the boy. “Come here,” he said. They both approached, and the soldiers stared at them closely. Then they exchanged a few words in English. “Make sure that horseshoe and the wheel are ready quickly, very quickly!” the soldier finally barked. Without another word, the four marched back out to the yard. “He’s a Jew,” Shikovitzer said thoughtfully, looking toward the doorway through which the men had disappeared. “Who, the soldier who was doing the translating?” “Yes. On Yom Kippur he came into my shul for a few minutes for Yizkor.” Then he shook his head. “Go home, Binyamin,” he said somberly. “If they are looking for Zelig, it’s not a good idea for suspicion to fall on you instead of him. And I’ll be glad to see you at Mincha. Where did you daven Shacharis?” “In the Ramchal shul.” Binyamin stood up obediently. “I missed it.” “Um….” Shikovitzer suddenly stopped him. “Can I send you on a small errand? Normally I wouldn’t want to use a talmid chucham, but this might be pikuach nefesh.” “Of course.” “Just check if Zelig is at Wanunu, his employer. Whether he is or isn’t there, leave a message in my name that he should not come home this evening, or to here. Let him find somewhere else to stay until morning, just to be safe.” To be continued…

MUSIC-ASSISTED T H E R A P Y: DRUMS Music itself is inherently therapeutic, and its power only grows when we combine it with group therapy. In our music-assisted therapy, the coaching model is utilized to bring out the power we each hold inside. By understanding one’s emotional states, what is and is not in our control, the connection between the body and the mind, the impact of language and the innate ability to make choices — individuals experience higher levels of self-confidence and improved sense of self. Music in this form helps people to reach their own crescendo.

YOGA-ASSISTED THERAPY Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been have previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

Events. Crowdfunding. Dinners. Mailings. Some tzedakah campaigns succeed spectacularly, some less so. And some even flop. Why is that? When it comes to raising tzedakah funds, many factors determine how a mission fares. Some, like the nature of the cause, are easy to put a finger on. Others, like how motivated people are to be part of it, can be frustratingly elusive to some and staggeringly lucrative for others. Those in both groups share one thing in common: They turn to marketing firms for help in their tzedakah endeavors and to see greater funds pouring in. While it may be difficult to accurately measure their impact, there must be a good reason why it has become the norm to enlist the help of marketing gurus for almost every major tzedakah mission. We sat down with a couple of the prominent names and firms who spearhead popular tzedakah initiatives to learn more about the how, why and what of their chesed work.

FRIEDCO MEDIA BROOKLYN, NY

Yoel has been an askan and activist for charitable causes well before he began performing this work professionally at the now well-known FriedCo Media agency. After an emergency campaign he was involved with helped raise massive sums for a frum woman in need of a critical medical transfer from France to the U.S., he committed himself to being part of the solution for those in need. Today, FriedCo Media offers full-service solutions to those running campaigns, dinners or events, in addition to traditional business and organizational marketing. What is your initiation process prior to creating a campaign theme? Before we begin, we sit with the people involved with the organization and try to really connect to their core messaging and how they view themselves. The next step is to determine what they want out of the project at hand. Once we’re clear on that, the fun begins…

tion before you can begin working on the exact message. Once we make readers pause and look, only then can we build out the exact details of the campaign.

It can be a risky strategy. Do you ever have to shelve ideas? We never proceed with a theme with which the client doesn’t feel 100% comfortable. Indeed, there have been ideas that some in an organization felt were too out there or would turn off some donors, and we put them away to be utilized at a later date. I recall a campaign that was all worked out already when some of the people involved felt that the theme was too emotionally gutwrenching — a valid concern, I should add.

How do you view your responsibility as it relates to the rise of online campaigns? I always tell people that crowdfunding is not fundraising. You are not raising money; you are cultivating individuals in the community to raise money for you. You have to keep that in mind and remember to gear your efforts to ensuring that those team leaders have all the tools — yes, including marketing — to

succeed in their mission.

What have been some of your most successful campaigns? That would have to be our work on behalf of the incredible Refuah Helpline organization. This August, the annual campaign set a goal of $3.5 million and raised a staggering $4.5 million! Just three short years ago, the goal was $1 million, and things took off rapidly in an unprecedented manner. We’re grateful to play a part in their lifesaving work. On a grand scale, it is sometimes mind blowing to look back and realize that we have helped raise over $100 million for Jewish causes over the past few years — with much more coming, b’ezras Hashem.

What are some lessons you’ve learned over the years? Well, I’ve realized that it’s a big mistake to assume that what works for one group or organization will work for others. Every mission requires a targeted and custom mehalech to succeed. There is no template, only a commitment to doing our best in each unique situation and relying on Hashem to see bracha in our efforts.

SHLOMO STEINMETZ

THE PIVOT GROUP BROOKLYN, NY

The Pivot Group has made a name for itself in recent years as one of the creative entities behind many successful campaigns. Founded by Shlomo Steinmetz, who had previously volunteered for a number of chesed organizations in their fundraising efforts, they have risen to the forefront of the heimish marketing scene. What goes into marketing a tzedakah campaign? To answer your question, we have to differentiate between different types of campaigns and what would get people emotionally hooked to them. When an organization fundraises directly, we have to ensure that the message is clear and that people are aware of the details related to the drive or event. For a crowdsourced campaign, a large focus is on getting the individual fundraisers excited and upping the limits that their network will donate. In a crisis case, it’s all about opening hearts and raising awareness in a captivating way.

Can you take us through your creative brainstorming process? I wish I could describe a perfect scene of how it

goes down, but in the real world, inspiration can come from anywhere and at the most random times. Sometimes it’s someone who is not part of our creative team who sees things in a clear way and provides that beautiful spark. What we can control is our discovery process where we gather information and objectives to ensure that we’re on the right track.

What are some of your most successful campaigns? We have, baruch Hashem, been the creative engine behind the popular Keren Hashviis campaign that raised a total of $21 million dollars for Israeli farmers toward this shemittah. We built a personal connection with Klal Yisroel by depicting the farmers as the heroes they truly are, and for the first time since the days of the second Beis Hamikdash, a majority

of Israeli farms are idle this year — a remarkable feat!

Have you seen some campaigns widely exceed expectations? If yes, what was the key? This year we helped run a campaign for a local shul in Boro Park that had a goal of $1 million and reached $4.3 million! If there is one theme to these campaigns it’s that the people doing the personal fundraising are incredibly passionate about the cause. No amount of marketing can replace that, and it cannot be faked.

So, in your view, how does marketing fit into the picture? I’ve seen campaigns with lots of potential fail due to lack of marketing, but on the other hand, I cannot stress enough that marketing is no more than one tool. The cause must be good, the year-round efforts must be persistent, and the people raising the money must truly care.

What, if anything, has surprised you over the years? I used to be involved with dinners and events where the expenses were mind-boggling and the upside was limited. We were behind the recent Bonei Olam campaign that had begun with a $4 million goal and ended up reaching nearly $8 million, with money in the organization’s account within days. Back in the day, it would take four to eight expensive dinners to reach that amount, not to mention the months of actually collecting the pledges! These advances have also saved so many wonderful organizations and services from literal collapse by raising so much more, so much faster. Also, and this might sound cliche, but I am continuously blown away that campaign after campaign keeps on meeting and exceeding the ever-growing expectations. So many times I’ve thought, “This is it,” and the community keeps on stepping up to the plate. Kol hakavod!

DART MEDIA KIRYAS YOEL, NY

Dart Media is among the brand names in the heimish world of marketing. With teams in Monsey and Kiryas Yoel, the group has been behind many of the most prominent fundraising and awareness campaigns in recent years. For this feature, we spoke with Levy Yitzchok Greenwald, one of their senior strategists and creative leaders. Levy Yitzchok spent years volunteering in his local kehillah before taking on this role with Dart. How do you view your role in marketing a campaign? We aim to maneuver people in the community into what we call the “permission zone.” Let me explain: People on a healthy diet allow themselves to eat a bigger meal on a weeknight if they happen to be sitting at a family wedding, and might purchase a sweet treat in the gas station if they’re out on a trip. Why is that? Because at this moment, they’re in a permission zone to act differently than in regular life. If I were to walk into a shul to collect funds for any respected charity right now, I would probably get dollars and quarters. What can create an atmosphere or matzav of donating sums in the hundreds or thousands? Besides for Purim, this becomes our

job before and during campaigns. And this also applies to the team leaders as they get the confidence to ask their contacts for larger amounts.

What would happen if an organization decides not to work with a marketing firm on a campaign? We had a client who came to us after deciding to do it all on their own the year prior and failing so spectacularly that some staff were too demoralized to come in to work. Baruch Hashem, we were able to help them turn things around, but it’s always better to work with people who do such work full time.

COMPUTER TECHNICIAN Where do you get the inspiration for some of your splashy ideas? I assume that you’re referring to the popular Dirshu campaigns or the Tosfos Yom Tov movement, which encourages silence during davening, among others. We have a sign in our conference room that proclaims “Bad Ideas Welcome,” because we can never know where they might lead, and we want everyone to speak up. We have over twenty people on our team, and we break them up into silo groups so they can each work out themes on their own. To fully develop the germ of an idea takes hours and hours, often over the course of many weeks.

A large organization in Boro Park Is looking to hire a Heimishe Yingerman FOR AN IT POSITION, needs some experience, but quick intuitive learner would be excellent. Great benefits, atmosphere & potential.

Can you share an example of how a marketing theme came together? We were once driving to a meeting while working on an event that assists couples with infertility. As we stood waiting at an especially long red light, an idea hit us: We would place ads everywhere people wait to tap into the frustration they feel at that moment, reminding them that childless couples wait years for good news that never comes. We then put out signs with such messages at bus stops, elevators, minyanim centers, etc. We even put out silhouettes who were waiting pointlessly at street corners to hammer this point home.

Who have been some of the more prominent clients you’ve worked with? Oh, practically everyone. From local organizations like Chai Lifeline, Misaskim and TAG; to Israeli groups like Oneg Shabbos V’Yom Tov and Bayis Lepleitos; to Yaldei from Montreal and so many others. Our team also counts all major chassidish kehillos among our partners, including work for the massive new shul in New Square.

Some people think that our work isn’t measurable and therefore not as “real” as other services. It cannot be farther from the truth. If we don’t bring results, we wouldn’t have clients return. We set out with clear and tangible goals that our success can be measured against. Another misconception is that people sometimes fail to realize that fundraising isn’t marketing and marketing isn’t fundraising. YOSSI BLUM EN FELD

GCNY BROOKLYN, NY

This introduction can be penned in just four letters: G-C-N-Y. Among the paradigm-shifting pioneers of today’s frum marketing world, the firm has become the unquestioned standard-bearer for excellence, creativity and impact. Yossi Blumenfeld, founder and CEO, was a graphics whiz at a young age, but when he realized that how things look matters far less than how they work, he transitioned to fullservice marketing, where he has been inundated with requests for his expertise ever since. In your mind, what has been the key to GCNY’s success in the tzedakah field? I think we’ve been able to build — and maintain — an emotional connection to the plight of the people on the receiving end of the support. It’s not so much the creativity in marketing and execution — though that matters a great deal — but rather about making people personally identify with what others are going through. In a world of limitless chesed causes, this is a continuous and growing challenge, and the execution of these campaigns requires a team with deep emotional intelligence.

GCNY precedes the era of online campaigns. How has the industry changed, and is there still a place for live events? Indeed. If you recall, Hatzolah of Boro Park used to host an in-person event every year that was a must for every local resident to attend. We helped make those very successful, baruch Hashem, and we’ve creatively applied many of its benefits to the contemporary scene. One example is bringing the Chinese Auction format to the digital world. To answer your question: While online crowdfunding reaches a much wider audience with virtually limitless small-

er donations, live events are where we see the large five- and six-figure numbers being donated, and they also provide a different type of exposure. They definitely still serve a purpose and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

You have a reputation as a trailblazer in this field. What are some original ideas you’re most proud of? Today, everyone associates RCCS with the color yellow. I don’t think any Jewish cause or organization has successfully tried this before or replicated it since. We launched it through the “Yell-Ow” initiative, and it has worked so well in terms of becoming identifiable with RCCS that the organization continues to utilize it even in events or campaigns that we are not involved with. We’ve also dared to change the way auctions are held — with much success. It used to be that every auction had packages at different price points. We began running auctions where every raffle ticket costs the same, welcoming in a much broader audience. Another change was introducing what’s called upselling to such campaigns, where we entice donors to upgrade to a higher bracket by offering them a free gift, access to more winnings, etc. It’s something widely done in the business world, but is relatively new for tzedakah campaigns.

People often view campaign marketing with cynicism. What is your response to that? I must say that having a front row seat to the action has shown

102

The Boro Park View

October 20, 2021

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

me that the well-respected organizations are actually incredibly committed to doing what’s right by their donors. There have been multiple occasions where we suggested something costly and were told that the organization doesn’t find it right to spend their donors’ hard-earned money on something that might not seem 100% necessary to some. The fact is that our community performs a tremendous amount of chesed, and that costs a lot of money. We don’t manipulate people into giving; we make them aware of what’s really going on and inspire them to be part of it. If everyone could somehow see and connect to every great cause out there, our work wouldn’t be necessary.

Has anything surprised you over the years? I’m an optimistic person, but sometimes I have to be impressed by how well people take to an initiative. A few years ago we launched Project Ignite that invited people to submit a weekly donation to Kollel Shomrei Hachomos, which serves poor families in Eretz Yisroel. The hope was that it will provide the organization with a stable, recurring income stream. I was expecting people to choose the $1 or $2 options, but most people went for the higher numbers, and we got sign-ups from the most far-flung locations imaginable. It was heartwarming to see Jewish mothers around the globe uniting to help almanos and the poor during this most special time of the week.

CLICK & MARKET // DRYVE MONSEY, NY

Together with his partner Yanky Deutsch, Yossi launched Click & Market over a decade ago. The rise of online campaigns led them to found their own crowdfunding platform Dryve, offering campaign managers fixed lower fees and a suite of customizable solutions. Today, the two joint ventures have catapulted them to the top of the tzedakah marketing world. Why is campaign marketing necessary when an organization is already well known? There are a few answers to your question, but I’ll focus on just a couple. First off, I like to tell people that for-profit businesses and not-for-profits are only different in their organizational structure, but their public imaging works the same way. In our hypercompetitive world, even the most well-established retailers need to advertise to remain ahead. Additionally, I don’t think we’ve ever sat with an organization who felt that people are sufficiently aware of everything they do or the expenses that the organization incurs. There are always services

that people just don’t know about, and ironically, the more well established an organization is, the harder it is to help people learn of the lesser-known things they do. Hypothetically speaking, if you run an organization that everyone knows helps Holocaust survivors, it is an enormous task to let the world know that you also spend millions on feeding the local poor.

What goes into marketing a successful campaign? Going back to my previous analogy, if a store was to advertise a sale tomorrow after going a year without any ads or being in front of people, would they

The fundraisers and PR people need to be proactive all throughout the year to ensure that potential donors are involved, engaged and see the organization’s work before their eyes.

With your Dryve platform, you are in a unique position to see behind the scenes. What are some misconceptions people have about your work? Many people unfortunately assume that marketers take off a large chunk of each donation. In truth, while we do take a relatively small amount to pay for our work, we can and do save organizations untold sums by ensuring that they target the right people and make the most money possible. If an organization or institution has a good reputation, you can rest assured that nearly the entire sum raised ends up going to those intended.

How much responsibility do you carry for the success — or lack thereof — of a campaign? To be frank, the success of an online campaign depends overwhelmingly on the people who are out there raising the money. While we do the marketing, and offer the Dryve software that helps greatly, the greatest focus must be on ensuring that the raisers — or Dryvers — know what they need to do and are capable of doing so. We work a lot with the Omni Group led by my friends Nuchem Ornstein and Shlomo Zalmen Spitzer, some of the best in the line at cultivating this aspect of the business. What have you learned while watching this market evolve? How much time do you have? (Laughs...) I’ll share

two quick stories. I was once involved with a seemingly typical campaign and woke up one morning to a letter from a beis din. It turned out that the organization had been having friction with a different group (since resolved, to my knowledge), and my name got dragged in. I learned to always do my research and keep an eye on what else might be going on beneath the surface. Another time we helped raise emergency funds for a sick Yid, and the day after the campaign ended, he was sadly niftar. We sat with rabbanim and dayanim to hear whether we should refund everyone or see how the funds can be utilized for a keren yesomim — which was the route we eventually took. When dealing with such large numbers, you want to steer clear from even the faintest halachic concerns.

Can you share some of the unique campaigns you’ve been involved with? Just recently, we ran an online campaign that wasn’t for money at all! There is a project called Kovati, founded in memory of the unforgettable Shragee Gestetner who was tragically niftar in Meron. We spearheaded a large campaign to recruit Yidden to commit to daily kvi’as itim. As it turns out, Klal Yisroel is just as generous with their time as they are with their money. It was wonderful to see the positive response, and professionally satisfying to know that our marketing and creative systems work beyond the traditional fundraising.

Do you ever turn down campaigns? If we don’t believe the goals are realistic, we will turn it down (or advise clients to revise their goals). Similarly, if the cause or campaign doesn’t match our values, we feel strongly that we won’t be able to provide clients with the service they deserve.

Over the past decade, the marketing scene has exploded in many ways. Branding and feel and copy became the words spoken by many who’d never even known the words had such usages. An entire field of new career options opened up as marketing teams developed and think tanks planned ways to capture the public’s attention — and stay lodged in unsuspecting minds. But that is not to say that marketing doesn’t have a rich history. Some of yesterday’s masterminds are behind campaigns that have endured, and here we explore them.

Absolut [fill in the blank] ABSOLUT VODK A Launched in 1981

This campaign had the triple whammy of being visually attractive and memorable, and boasting consistent copy that made people look out for the newest in the series. In this campaign, the Absolut bottle — so unremarkable a design — was incorporated into ad designs, always captioned with the word Absolut. The versatility of the ads allowed for over 1,500 versions, which appeared in print over a span of decades. The simplicity of the idea allowed the advertisements to flow with the changing times and not get outdated. The most memorable chunk of this campaign was a focus on geographical locations, which made people connect with the company on a personal level — always a huge factor in marketing. The lesson of this campaign? Nothing is too boring to be displayed in an interesting way. Zone in on the basics. Have a look at your product with fresh eyes, tell its story with its unique feel or even shape, and you will have developed a brand.

Germany in the Year 2000 THEODOR HILDEBRAND AND SON Launched in 1900

The chocolate factory owned by Theodor Hildebrand had some big plans for millennials. At the World’s Fair of 1900, Hildebrand’s chocolate factory launched a marketing campaign, which told of the (imagined) innovations the population 100 years hence would enjoy. These colorful postcards were slipped into the boxes of their sweets and chocolates (as if anyone ever needs more motivation to eat chocolate!), each one emblazoned with the company’s name. So, people of the 21st century, what do you think of their predictions?

Police would have X-ray vision by the time our generation was here, the Hildebrands hoped.

Why they’d thought we’d want to be on the go all our lives is not clear, but here’s another dream they had for us.

Germany in the Year 2000

Driverless cars? Neh, that’s so 20th century. How about personal flying machines? Personal airships? Now you’re talking…

The North Pole would be a tourist destination. They apparently saw this as an exciting change, not an “Oh no, it’s global warming” doomsday prediction.

And fancy that — we’d be able to control the weather and its effects on us with this weather machine and citywide roofs!

Got Milk? CALIFORNIA MILK PROCESSOR BOARD Launched in 1993

This iconic, much-known slogan almost didn’t see the light of day because the marketers at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners first “thought it was lazy, not to mention grammatically incorrect,” according to an article in The New York Times. In an effort to encourage the consumption of milk, the marketing agency representing the milk processor board realized that convincing people of its health benefits wouldn’t do; people know milk is healthy. But what if they could convince people that being without milk is seriously never, ever a good idea? (Java lovers, do you need any convincing?) The advertisement typically featured people in milk-desperate situations, but with an empty milk carton: with sticky foods that they needed to down with a refreshing glass of white, with a black coffee, or with a plate of cookies (what, cookies without milk?) all by itself. Or simply children (or cats!) begging for milk. In 1995, the campaign switched to “milk mustaches,” where a lot of famous people were advertised still sporting the effects of drinking a glass of milk.

Just Do It NIKE Launched in 1988

The words in this campaign — more than the graphics, the concept, or any of its adornments — made people just buy those Nikes. This campaign was launched at a time when Nike was trailing behind Reeboks in sales, and the clarity, conciseness and the immediacy that this simple tagline portrayed took the indecisiveness out of the equation. People soon knew that they’d do their exercise — just do it! — and that they’d do it in a pair of Nike footwear. The beauty of this campaign was its simplicity. It was said to take just twenty minutes for the Wieden+Kennedy advertisement agency to come up with this tagline, yet its message endured and sparked an influx of sales.

The Worst Hotel in the World HANS BRINKER BUDGET HOTEL Launched in 2013

This hostel in the center of Amsterdam decided to get some publicity by proving what they’re really good at: being terrible (and charging very little). No hot air, no undelivered promises, just a commitment to be inconsistently inhospitable. Like they say on their website, “At the Hans Brinker Hostel you get what you pay for.” Further boasts include “One location, low expectation” and “What you see is what you get — just don’t look too closely.” Ads include check-in pictures of guests who look just fine, with check-out pictures showing them bleary-eyed and injured.

Sometimes it’s an old faithful that needs a little time in the limelight — but how can that get done? One example is Coke’s Share a Coke campaign that made coke-buying both personal and exciting. By printing the 150 most popular first names across random bottles and cans in their branded font, Coke made some noise. And while some were enamored by this novelty, others were just confused. But whatever the reaction, Coke got what they wanted: People talking about something that had been in the background just one day earlier...

RABBI MOSHE ELYASHIV SON OF THE GAON RAV YOSEF SHALOM ELYASHIV ZT”L The Holy City of Jerusalem, May it be rebuilt quickly in our days, Amen

To the women who participate in the Shmiras Halashon and Tznius Shiur. May the pleasantness of Hashem be upon you for all your matters. Your understanding of the opinion of my late father and teacher the Gaon Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l is correct and true, that he prefers covering the hair of the head with a kerchief (tichel) or hat rather than covering the hair with a modest wig, because there are poskim who forbid covering the hair with even a modest wig. (A non-modest wig is forbidden by halacha according to everyone). We heard the Rav say this several times.

You find yourself holding the winning ticket. Receiving that phone call from the auction MC. Watching with incredulity as your name comes out of the sack. You’ve won! First there’s disbelief, then sheer joy. Because in addition to the prize, you also recognize that it was a tiny dose of love from Above. Here six people share their stories.

Tricks of the Trade BY: S. SCH A R F

“I already know my rebbi’s tricks! I already know my rebbi’s tricks!” He barrels through the door, back home from his first day of cheder. His face is aglow, and he’s waving a small grocery bag high over his head, like a trophy. “Hello! How was your first day of cheder? And what’s this about tricks?” I ask. “Look!” He sets the bag down on the table and tips out its contents with a flourish: a large chocolate bar, a bulging bag of chips, followed by a miniature bottle of soda. A veritable treasure. “See?” he crows. “Wow! Where did you get these goodies?” He can hardly contain himself; the story spills out of him like the treats from his bag. “My rebbi made a goral — special for the first day,” he explains excitedly. “The first time, another kid in the class picked number 47, and he won!” He laughs, a clear ringing sound that fills the kitchen and makes the corners of my mouth tug upward. Tossing the

soda from hand to hand, he continues on animatedly. “For the second round, everyone else tried their luck with another number. Only I picked 47, and I won!” I glance from the loot to his happy, open smile. He radiates an easy confidence born of a smooth start, this bright little boy of mine, who can be misread as easily as he could be understood. Children often can be. How I was hoping and praying that this year’s rebbi would look into his eyes and see the smart, spirited, eager-to-please child that I know and love. Unlike last year. “…So you see, I know my rebbi’s tricks! And I won!” He laughs again, delighted. I give him a quick hug, chocolate bar and all, and I think to myself, I know his rebbi’s tricks, too. I know that it takes a master mechanech to instantly realize which child, out of a class of 30 boys, needed to start a fresh new year on a sweet note. And I know something more. This year is going to be a winner.

Of Timing and Timepieces BY: ROCHEL FR EULICH

Tensions were running high, and it was getting in the way of our shalom bayis. “Can you please just turn off your phone? It’s not like you want to explain to everyone where you are.” My husband sighed, exasperated, as the tenth call of the hour urgently made itself heard. It didn’t help matters at all that tonight, of all nights, everyone was going to wonder where I was. Now they were just calling to make arrangements to go. Just wait until they would all realize that I was not showing up at the Chinese auction I’d worked so hard for — the fundraiser for the Bikur Cholim that meant so much to me. Tonight my son needed me. So there we were, a short plane ride away from home, waiting to hear if he was actually going to get engaged. It had looked like it when we scheduled the tickets, but now, as we paced the hotel room and got in each other’s way, it was no longer looking so promising. So, no, I couldn’t even tell anyone where I was, couldn’t even explain my glaring absence. When Sury called, I decided to pick up. “I might come a little later,” I said into the phone. “Something came up. Save me a seat!” And I whispered a little apology for little white lies. And then came the reprieve as everyone was finally tuning into the program. Tomorrow I’d explain. Right now, I was finally off the hook. And then my phone exploded again. One call. Two calls. Three calls! What was going on? “Is your phone still on?” my husband asked. “Didn’t you turn it off before?” I checked the texts. Faigy: Where are you?? Toby: Wow!! Sury: Rochel, you won!!! You won the Ebel!! I blinked. Did I get that right? I’d won the watch at the Chinese auction! Momentarily floored, I shared the news with my husband, and there was a simple,

128

The Boro Park View

giddy excitement that overtook us for a moment. Everybody was probably looking for me now, but I cared a little less, taken by this unexpected win. I’d won the Ebel! Wasn’t this a good sign or something? Good sign or not, the shidduch didn’t work out. But two months later, my son got engaged much closer to home. But the kallah never received the Ebel watch because it seemed the one who donated it had done so because it wasn’t exactly current. And there’s no way my son’s kallah (my son got engaged! Did I tell you yet?!) was going to get anything less than the very best. And I? Well, I wasn’t going to wear an Ebel, even a slightly outdated one. So it languished in my closet. And every so often I’d see it and remember that I had mazel. That, after all, I was capable of winning a raffle prize! And then, as we sat at the first meeting to plan the next year’s Bikur Cholim Chinese Auction, summoning up the enthusiasm to turn out another yesh me’ayin project, Malka, our determined chairwoman, said, “Okay, let’s draw up a list of possible sponsors. We need really good prizes to attract a crowd.” I cleared my throat and proposed the first offer: “I have an Ebel watch to donate.”

A Bid Spreading Light AS TOLD TO: H A DASSA H STEINM A N

The first shout came from the back. “Two dollars.” “Three.” “Five!” Face flushed, I stepped forward. “Ten!” The MC of the Bikur Cholim tzedakah party I was attending was doubling as the auctioneer. She was holding up a paper with a large number 5 on it, but whatever number 5 represented remained a mystery. Bids were coming thick and fast, only no one knew what they were bidding for! “Fifteen!” Again from the back of the room. “Eighteen!” “Twenty!” I called. “Twenty-two!” I thought fast. “Twenty-five!” There was a moment of silence, and then the MC said, “Going once… going twice… going three times… and number 5 is yours!” There was cheering and clapping as I hurried to the front of the room. The MC handed me the paper, and then bent down to pick up a large, heavy box from the floor. “You got a good deal,” she said, and winked. I grinned and peeked inside. Nestled in the cardboard and bubble wrap sat a lovely chandelier in a soft neutral-colored leather, and its branches boasted raised, round designs that were reminiscent of

grapes. Something clicked in my brain. Grapes. My sister Bassy was in the process of buying a house, and the kitchen, done in a lovely neutral wood that was fashionable at the time, featured a backsplash that had sweet little clusters of grapes appearing every few feet. Perfect. Bassy’s moving day came fast, and the first time I visited her in her new home, I arrived with the large box in my arms carrying the requisite housewarming gift. “Hey,” Bassy cried when she saw me. “Come on in!” “This is for you,” I said, handing her the box. “Enjoy it!” Bassy peeked inside and her mouth dropped open. “It’s perfect!” she said, sounding rather shocked. “It’s like it was made for my kitchen.” And, indeed, it was! In no time at all the fixture was hanging, pulling all the elements of her kitchen together with a triumphant glow of light. Even though it’s been years now, whenever I visit we look at the chandelier still hanging in her kitchen and exchange a small smile. Sometimes a gift is just right, even if it first appears hiding behind a large number 5.

Getting Lucky at the Door BY: R IK I GOLDSTEIN It was that sticky, kvetchy time of day when mothers of very young children realize it’s time to draw a line under the afternoon and call it suppertime. A timid tap on the door of our fourth-floor apartment in Yerushalayim revealed a young neighbor, a shy child of about nine, with straggly hair escaping her pony and a paper book of raffle tickets. Naturally, I bought one. Not because I needed to support her elementary school, or because I thought I’d win anything (so not my type!), but because I’d buy a ticket to encourage any kid, and this one, well, she needed some encouragement. Happy that she’d actually managed a sale, the child managed a bashful thank you and ran off. I stuffed the paper into a kitchen cabinet and returned to the table to serve supper. When she came back, a few weeks later, the kid was beaming. She skipped up the steps. Her ticket, which she had sold to her neighbor, was a winning ticket! It entitled us to a free night’s stay in a Badatz Eidah Hachareidis hotel in Teveria, which to this little girl seemed almost as richly exotic as a stay on Jeff Bezos’ space rocket might to a more worldly person. As for us, we were a kollel couple. We loved freebies, especially unexpected ones. My husband soon planned an itinerary for a trip to the North, visiting Meron, Tzefas and the kivrei tzaddikim — and overnight, a free Badatz hotel stay. Memorable and different, this trip is now enshrined in my memory as our farewell fling to Eretz Yisroel; we moved to chutz l’aretz very soon thereafter. Nevertheless, with all the dozens of raffle tickets I buy from the kids at my door, it’s never happened again.

A Hug from Hashem AS TOLD TO: RUCHY REESE

I flopped onto the couch and buried my face in a pillow, hiding from the phone I’d dropped as soon as I saw the name of a local shadchan on the screen. “I can’t do this anymore,” I wailed. “I am so — burned — out!” Eleven years of waiting for the right match can do that to a girl, you know. “Just answer the call. Give it one shot,” my friend Mina encouraged me, poking my shoulder with the phone. “You never know… this one might just be The One.” I ignored her until the phone stopped ringing, and Mina, with a sigh, resigned herself to flipping through a circular. She realized I was a lost cause. “Hey, there’s a Chinese auction down the street,” she said a moment later. “Let’s go!” “Why?” “Because you’re miserable company lately, and if you’re going to just sit here and mope, I’m going to make you call the shadchan back!” Like a lightning bolt, I was up and zooming through the hallway, heading to my room to freshen up. If this is what it took to run away from another failed shidduch… so be it. As soon as I got to my room, I closed the door and sank onto the floor. “Hashem,” I whispered, “Where are You? Don’t you see my suffering?” I swiped at my tears with the back of my sleeve. “I feel so alone. And so… tired. It’s been more than a decade, and I’ve tried so hard… I’ve reached the end of my endurance. Tatty, help me!” “Hey, when are you coming out?” The rap on the door pulled me back to the present. Pasting a smile on my face, I stood up and headed out the door, pockets full of cash and a heart full of pain.

ed, “Scout out the place. Find something you really want to win, and put all your tickets there. You’ll up your odds of winning.” Thanking her, I grabbed my tickets and decided to just do my own thing, because the truth was, I was here only to avoid being there — next to the phone and the constant reminder of my lonely state. I slid a ticket into each box and made my way to the salad bar. * * * * *

The call came the very next day. “I won what? Seriously? Ummm… I’m not married and live in a tiny basement. I’m not quite sure what to do with the prize.” “So you don’t want it?” the caller asked incredulously. “I didn’t say that… Just — I’ll call you back, okay?” I hung up the phone and pondered what had just happened. Did I, of all people, really just win the

“So, is there a method to the madness or do we just plunk tickets into any box?” I asked Mina. “Don’t ask me! I never won anything,” she said. A well-meaning yenta leaned over and interject-

grand prize of the previous night’s Chinese auction? It didn’t make any sense. But then again, nothing did. Just then my phone rang again, and I looked down to see the shadchan’s number once again on the ID. Taking a deep breath, I raised my eyes heavenward and whispered, “I get it, Hashem; You sent me a hug last night. Now please let me claim the prize.” With a renewed burst of strength, I listened to the information being offered, willing to give my search one last chance. B’chasdei Hashem, it was only three months later that I claimed my prize: two new seforim shanks filled with a chasan Shas… And there, right in front of them, sat the grandest prize of all: my husband caressing the pages of the timeless tomes as his voice rang out with the song of the Gemara.

Win-Win BY: M A LK A K ATZM A N

We were in the market for a bike. At least, my son Nachman was. He’d been talking about a new bike for months — but a specific kind, not just any bike — and while I did try to look into some secondhand options, nothing really worked out. Well, maybe The Mortgage had something to do with it. We’d recently taken out a very large mortgage, and it was getting difficult to pay it. Every expense was weighed against The Mortgage. That summer, I davened hard — for many things. For health. For parnassah. To pay the mortgage easily. And for a bike for Nachman. I really wanted my son to have a bike. I didn’t ask for money for the bike; just, please, give Nachman a bike. That summer, our local grocery was offering an unusual incentive. Buy from a certain line of frozen products for a certain minimum amount, and enter a Chinese auction for a prize of your choice. Chinese auctions are ubiquitous (and so is our claim that we never win), but in a grocery store? I looked at the ad and flipped the page. The things people do to boost sales! When I bought frozen salmon at the grocery (on sale! $7 a pound!), I received a slip of paper along

136

with the receipt. Call a number, choose from the prizes on the menu, and enter your information. I handed the slip of paper to my twelve-year-old daughter and asked her to call and enter us into the auction for the bike. Nothing to lose there! I wouldn’t spend any time or money on it, but why not enter, if we already got the salmon on sale, and Chavy was happy to punch in some numbers? I stashed the piece of paper somewhere, just in case, and forgot about it. The auction was anyway scheduled to take place only in about six weeks. Six weeks later, we got a call. You won! A bike! What’s your address? What size bike do you choose? Tears sprang to my eyes. My hands were shaking when I put down the phone. And I whispered my thanks to Hashem. Things are tough with the mortgage, and we’re struggling. I daven every day for a grand yeshuah. But now You sent us a bike. A gift wrapped in bows, straight from Shamayim. A reminder that You hear us always. You’re taking care of everything, and You’ll send us what we need — everything in its time. The gleaming orange bike is not just a bike. For me, it’s love, hope and emunah.

DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER PARENTING COURSE? “Parenting can be so challenging.” “I feel like I don’t have tools to raise my kids properly.” “One of my kids take my house and turns it upside down, I just feel like I’m out of ideas.” “The work/life balance feels unrealistic once you have several kids.” This is what most moms used to think until they get to know the latest parenting program from Gelly Asovski, Playful Parenting 2.0.

A

mother of 7, K”EH came into therapy a while ago because her 5 year old son was acting out terribly. The entire household revolved around this child’s negative behavior. After assessing the situation, Gelly taught the mother how to do special “play time” with her son daily in order to give him love and nurture, exactly the opposite of how he was behaving. After 3 months, this mother reported that her child had suddenly gone back to being a sweet, little boy and was no longer out of control. The entire family breathed a sigh of relief as the house returned to normal. That’s the power of Playful Parenting, helping our kids get back to being calm, well adjusted children who play nicely with their siblings and friends. It’s about reducing the chaos and overwhelm, improving challenging behavior and creating a sense of safety and happiness in your family. This program began during Covid when all our normal, typical systems failed. Mothers were suddenly stuck with their kids 24/7 with nowhere to turn and no way to get help. Mothers felt lost and unequipped to deal with the continuous chaos and desperately needed guidance. Playful Parenting became the answer to help guide mothers to make the best out of their time with their kids and to create a happy atmosphere at home. Hundreds of mothers learned how to have both the mindset and practical, step-bystep tools to providing their children with connection, nurture and playful parenting. Nowadays, mothers are especially overwhelmed and find it hard to give the right amount of time and connection to each kid. Many families are struggling with kids more than ever before. Gelly wants mothers to feel better about parenting kids. She wants to make parenting easier and more fun for both mothers and children. This is why Playful Parenting is here to support

mothers in feeling confident about raising healthy, happy families. Mothers don’t always realize that the precious time they spend with their children is critical to help them grow up as healthy, happy adults. Actually, sometimes we defer to the school systems to give our children what they need emotionally along with the academics. It’s not our fault that we don’t feel like we have the strength or

So many families are struggling with kids more than ever before sometimes the information necessary to do what we know is right for our children. But this can be learned. The truth is that it’s up to us as mothers to provide our kids with what they need - the love, connection, nurture and playfulness to grow up happy and healthy. That’s why “Playful Parenting” is designed to give mothers of all ages and stages both the mindset and the practical, fun ideas to engage with their kids whether you have two minutes, five minutes or ten minutes and maximize the value of every minute you spend with your children. As mothers, all we want is to love our kids and give them the gift of family, to be the parent we know we could be if we had all the right tools.... At the end of the day, we want to feel like we’ve given our children everything they need in order to grow up a happy, healthy successful adult!

Mothers would be surprised to know that there’s a simple solution to many of the problems that come along with raising children. Mothers do not have to be stuck in overwhelm for life! There are answers that can help you feel more positive, confident and happy in your role as a mother. You could have happy, confident and cooperative children! Your children could flourish under your tender, loving care! It’s not too hard to learn these easy techniques that could make a world of a difference in your life and in the lives of your children. Woven in with heimishe values, Playful Parenting gives you the feeling that you can do it, that you can soar as a mother and accomplish your dreams to make your family a happy, beautiful place to raise your children. You don’t have to parent alone anymore. The Playful Parenting program is an 8 week course which is run LIVE several times a year. Come and be inspired by Gelly, a mother, grandmother and heimishe child and family therapist and learn practical, easy to implement tools to take your parenting to the next level! All courses are available as Replay option so you can listen to a class even if you’re a busy mother. Listen to a short introduction

The First Announcements Newspapers weren’t always printed on paper. In ancient Rome, government bulletins, called Acta Diurna, were carved into metal or stone and posted in public places. Similarly, in secondand third-century China, news sheets, handwritten on silk and called Dibao, circulated among court officials during the late Han dynasty. In early modern Europe, the rising need for information was met by concise, handwritten news sheets. In 1556, the government of Venice first published the monthly Notizie scritte, which cost one gazetta, a small coin. This is why some papers today are known as gazettes.

U.S. Editions America had newspapers even before she even had independence. The first newspaper in the American colonies was published by Benjamin Harris in 1690 in Boston, and it was called “Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick” (sic). Unfortunately for him, only one edition was published before the paper was quashed by the government — until 1704, when the governor allowed it to be republished. That’s when it became the first continuously published newspaper in the colonies. Soon after, weekly papers began being published in New York and Philadelphia. These early newspapers followed the current British format and were usually four pages long. In 1783, the Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first post-revolutionary American daily.

Growth and Decline While electronic alternatives continue to cut into printed newspapers’ popularity and revenue, the downhill trend is nothing new. In the first half of the twentieth century, the number of newspapers in America ceased their until-then steady growth and began to decline. The newspaper business had become lucrative enough for the most successful publications to have the ability to buy up smaller newspapers and begin to monopolize the news market. For example, by 1940, the twenty daily newspapers in New York City had been reduced to eight. In that same year, 25 cities in the United States with populations of more than 100,000 suddenly found themselves with only one daily paper.

The Heimishe Editions Today we have many frum Jewish newspapers and periodicals geared for our population, but it wasn’t always that way. In the early twentieth century, Europe boasted many Jewish newspapers, but unfortunately, they were almost all virulently anti-Torah publications. Reb Avigdor Miller, zt”l, who was then learning in one of the great European yeshivos, testified that in 1930s’ Lithuania, there were numerous daily Jewish newspapers published by various anti-Torah Jewish factions, yet for frum Jews, there was no daily or weekly paper at all, and almost no monthly paper, either. Only a small periodical, published by Tzeiri Agudas Yisroel, appeared at most once a month.

Yesterday’s News Newspapers aren’t just for reading. There are many creative and useful ways to make use of “yesterday’s news.” Of course, there’s the classic PAPIER-MÂCHÉ CRAFT PROJECTS.

Less well known is the fact that newspapers are great at helping you CONTROL WEEDS IN THE GARDEN. Lay a thick layer of newspaper down, and wet it thoroughly before covering with soil or wood chips. The paper is biodegradable, and the soy-based inks will pose no risk to plants. Crumpled newspaper also makes CHEAP AND READILY AVAILABLE PACKING MATERIAL to wrap and place around any fragile objects you want to ship. Newspapers are also great for CLEANING GLASS SURFACES such as mirrors, glass table tops and oven doors. Simply spray the glass surface with a solution of vinegar and water or your favorite over-the-counter cleaner, and rub briskly with crumpled newspapers for a streak-free shine. For other uses, stuff newspapers in wet or malodorous shoes or boots overnight to DRY THEM OUT AND REFRESH THEM . Similarly, place crumpled newspapers in suitcases or storage bins for a few weeks to REMOVE STALE SMELLS. Last, newspapers can even help you RIPEN TOMATOES ! Just wrap slightly green tomatoes in paper, and let sit for a few days.

Fake News? Fake news is nothing new. On the morning of November 3, 1948, the banner headline on the front page of the prestigious Chicago Daily Tribune announced the winner of the previous day’s U.S. presidential race. The only problem was, they got it wrong — as the underdog candidate, Truman, won an upset victory over his heavily favored opponent! Sure of the results, and wanting to catch a scoop, the paper okayed the article before the final results were in. Not long afterward, many other newspapers featured the now-famous photo of the triumphantly smiling true winner as he held out the paper with a fake news headline announcing his loss!

ON SHEITELS Posted on August 3, 2021 by TorasAvigdor

Q: A:

Can a woman wear a custom made sheitel?

Let me explain something about this subject of sheitelech. I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings; I want to make everybody happy and wearing a sheitel is certainly a good thing. But you should know that some sheitelech look too natural. And therefore long-haired sheitelech should be avoided. I won’t tell you exactly what to do, but you must know there is a responsibility on women to be able to come before the bais din shel maaleh when the time is up and she should be able to say, “I wasn’t the cause of anybody who was looking at me too much.” A woman should never be in a position where she is liable to be blamed for causing men to look at her. It’s not her fault that she is a woman, but she has to be careful not to misuse that privilege. Her husband is the one who has to look at her; others should not look. And therefore if you are too careful with your appearance, it’s looking for trouble. I don’t say you shouldn’t look good, but to make it your business to look attractive that’s not right. At home many people are slovenly, they’re sloppy. The husband sees a sloppy wife at home but on the street she dresses to kill! It should be the opposite. At home you should dress up and make the best impression on your husband; on the street just be plain. TAPE # E-152 (September 1998)
