(Re: Hitting the Mark, Issue 105) I enjoyed your tzedakah marketing feature. It was so heartwarming to see how Klal Yisroel elevates every aspect of life for ruchnius — that our advertising and marketing scene, which can be viewed as gashmius is the conduit for so much tzedakah and chesed. The article gave us a glimpse of the warm Yiddish hearts that make up each cog in these tzedakah campaign machines, and it made me proud to be part of this great nation. There is one point I’d like to bring across to the organizers of tzedakah campaigns. Please don’t touch hearts at the expense of the dignity and privacy of families hit with tragedy, lo aleinu. Yes, pictures of young kinderlach in pain possibly will make people open their wallets wider, but who is this publicity going to affect? Graphic descriptions of someone’s troubles might push a few more people to donate, but is the degradation worth it? Please think about the beneficiaries of these campaigns — precious and dear Yidden whom we want to help — and portray their plights with utmost respect. Respectfully, A Yid Who Cares
LET’S MAKE A DEMAND
(Re: Organic Diets, What’s the Hype?, Issue 104) I was excited to see last week’s article promoting organic produce. Unfortunately, it has been difficult to find a wide variety of organic fruits and vegetables at local grocery stores, and I hope that additional demand will push stores to bring in more organic options. I’ve had to order most of mine from other sources but would be so happy to

switch in order to support local businesses. Consumers should let their local stores know that they want more organic options, and hopefully that will give them the push to bring them in. I also saw some ads promoting juice cleanses, and I want to point out that, while this is great, women with young babies should avoid doing a full-on juice cleanse. Cleanses/ detox diets are intended to quickly release toxins from the body, and we don’t want to pass them onto our babies. Try something gentler like eliminating dairy, grains, soy, eggs and meats for several days. You won’t get the same level of results but will still feel energized and refreshed. An Organic Foodie

(Re: The Scoop on Superfoods, Issue 104) I wish I would have known, growing up, how trendy our lifestyle would be in 2021! I grew up at a time when words like superfoods, antioxidants and omega-3 were known to just a select few, in a home that had nature’s goodies in abundance. How nice it was to find the things my mother always told us about and purchased a bounty of — nuts, avocados, flaxseeds (soaked!), kamut and blueberries — in the list of all-time popular superfoods! It makes me admire my mother even more. How did she know all this in the ‘90s when most of the world was still ignorant of the nutritive richness inherent in Hashem’s natural gifts? A Proud Daughter

FOR KALLAH/MOTHER & CHASANIM MOTHERS
According to the Gemara in Bava Basra (16b), Avraham had a daughter named Bakol. This is one explanation of the pasuk in this week’s parsha, “V’Avraham zakein ba bayamim v’Hashem beirach es Avraham bakol” (Bereishis 24:1). Reb Meir Simcha Hakohen of Dvinsk, the Meshech Chochmah, explains that Lavan knew this. When he heard that Eliezer, the servant of Avraham, had arrived to Charan with camels and gifts, he imagined that it was all for him. Eliezer must have come to suggest Avraham’s daughter, Bakol, as a wife for Lavan! The thought of gaining all this wealth gave Lavan the push, the extra burst of energy, to run toward Eliezer. But when he saw his sister adorned with the jewels, he understood that the shidduch was not destined for him, but for his sister. At that very moment, Lavan weakened and slowed his pace. We too are granted kochos. When we dream of reaching a particular goal, we find strength beyond our natural disposition. The goal is not to lose our vitality when our objective turns out different from what we imagined. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

CHAPTER 30 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi arrives in Constantinople. As the town assembles at the shore to greet him, a group of Turkish soldiers rush forth and place Shabbesai Tzvi under arrest by order of the Grand Vizier.
O
n 3 Adar Aleph 1666, Shabbesai Tzvi was brought before Grand Vizier Kiuprili Ahmed Pasha. Shabbesai Tzvi was a forlorn figure standing alone before the Imperial court, his hands shackled, his head bowed. “Are you Shabbesai Tzvi of Smyrna?” asked Kiuprili. “I am.” “Are you the one who has thrown the Jewish communities of the Turkish Empire into turmoil by claiming to be the Messiah?” asked Kiuprili, a dark scowl on his face. “Is it true that you promised to take the crown from the sultan’s head and place it on your own?” The blood drained from Shabbesai Tzvi’s face, and his shackled hands began to tremble. “I am hearing these astonishing things for the first time, Your Excellency,” he said meekly. “I am a poor rabbi collecting charity among the Jewish communities of the Empire for the impoverished people of Yerushalayim. Never in my life have I spoken one word against the sultan, may his name be glorified forever.” “Liar!” snapped Kiuprili. “You’re
a shameless liar, Shabbesai Tzvi. Do you think we know nothing of what has been going on? Do you think we have not heard the Jewish people of Smyrna speaking of you as their king?” “I beg you not to mock your humble servant, Your Excellency,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “It’s all a grave error. It’s the custom of the Jewish people to refer to their rabbis respectfully as kings.1 Surely, Your Excellency’s sources misunderstood what they heard.” Kiuprili looked at Shabbesai Tzvi with unconcealed contempt. “You are indeed more like a beggar than a king,” he sneered. “Where is your courage? Where is your pride?” Shabbesai Tzvi hung his head and remained silent. “Remove him from my presence!” commanded the Grand Vizier. “Throw him into the dungeon!” The soldiers grabbed Shabbesai Tzvi roughly and dragged him from the chamber. He was taken to the largest prison in the city and thrown into a filthy dungeon with common thieves and murderers. The arrest and imprisonment of Shabbesai Tzvi shocked the Jewish
community of Constantinople. Fear of the dreaded reprisals of the Imperial troops was coupled with despair for the fate of Shabbesai Tzvi. Why had they been found unworthy at the last moment and had their redeemer been snatched from them? The people fasted and prayed in the shuls for the safety of their king, their heartrending cries echoing through the narrow streets of the Jewish quarter. They expected to hear of the execution of Shabbesai Tzvi at any moment, but weeks passed and Shabbesai Tzvi remained alive. Shabbesai Tzvi’s arrest was the greatest of miracles, proclaimed Avraham Yechini and Shmuel Primo. The Master was being treated with reverence in prison, they claimed, and many Turkish dignitaries came every day to pay homage to him. Moreover, the Master had assured them that the redemption was at hand and that his arrest and imprisonment were a deep mystery, which would eventually be explained. He promised that soon he would sacrifice a Korban Pesach. There was nothing to fear. All was proceeding according to the Divine plan. This cry was taken up by Shabbesai Tzvi’s disciples and followers, and presently, a feeling of relief and new rejoicing swept through Constantinople at this new manifestation of the power of Shabbesai Tzvi. Fantastic rumors circulated

throughout the city and were carried further by the flood of letters to the rest of the world. The Grand Vizier had sent a band of assassins to kill Shabbesai Tzvi in the dungeon, it was reported, but he had struck them all down with lightning bolts from his eyes. Shabbesai Tzvi had saved a dying man by giving him a morsel of food he had blessed with a special formula and performed all manner of other miracles. Words of the events in Constantinople reached Nattan Haazati in Gaza, and he responded with a fiery proclamation. The imprisonment of Moshiach, and the deep Kabbalistic mysteries attached to it, was one of the last stages before the Final Redemption, he wrote. By suffering for his people in captivity, Moshiach would hasten the repair of the lower world and expedite the destruction of the kelipah. There was no cause for worry. Archangels hovered over Moshiach, protecting him with their celestial wings from the sultan’s power. Indeed, if he so wanted, he could crush the walls of the prison and walk out untouched; he stayed there of his own free will to bring the redemption closer. The imprisonment was a cause for happiness, not sorrow. In the meantime, Shabbesai Tzvi’s advisers and followers spared no effort to improve the conditions of his imprisonment and to make him accessible to his followers. They raised vast sums for the ransom of the captive king. Avraham Yechini and Yechiel Hapolani then met with the local qadi and offered him an outlandish bribe. The qadi accepted the generous gift of the Jewish community in exchange for a promise to move the prisoner to more respectable quarters. After two months among common criminals, Shabbesai Tzvi was removed to the Isle of Abydos near Gallipoli at the mouth of the Dardanelles Straits, where they emptied into the Aegean Sea. He was imprisoned in a fortress used solely for the confinement of highborn prisoners. Shabbesai Tzvi arrived in Abydos on Erev Pesach accompanied by many of his closest supporters. They had brought matzos with them from Constantinople, and now Shabbesai Tzvi dispatched Yechiel Hapolani to the marketplace of Gallipoli to purchase a lamb. When Yechiel returned with the lamb, the guards greeted him politely and led him to the suite of rooms where Shabbesai Tzvi had been taken. There were no locks on the doors or any indication the fortress was being used as a prison. Shabbesai Tzvi was seated on a comfortable chair looking out at the blue waters of the Dardanelles when Yechiel entered with the lamb in his arms. Avraham Yechini and Shmuel Primo stood nearby. “Ah, Yechiel, I knew we could rely on you to find a lamb,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Now we can bring a Korban Pesach! Let’s not waste time. The day fades quickly. I must wash my hands. Shmuel, bring the slaughtering knife!” The realization that Shabbesai Tzvi intended the lamb for a Korban Pesach startled Yechiel. He had assumed that Shabbesai Tzvi’s promise to sacrifice the Korban Pesach would be fulfilled in the rebuilt Beis Hamikdash in Yerushalayim. How could a sacred korban be sacrificed in a Turkish prison? Was it not forbidden? But Yechiel remained silent. He had learned to accept everything without question. Instead, he glanced worriedly at the sol-

diers standing guard outside the open door of the suite. Avraham Yechini laughed. “There is no need for concern, Yechiel,” he said. “The guards will not move from their positions. Their pockets are too heavy with the gold we have given them.” “But what if the commandant appears?” “I have spoken to the commandant at length, and he promises to be cooperative. He has even granted us permission to receive as many visitors as we wish. For a fee, of course.” Yechiel smiled with relief. “The way things have developed is truly a miracle,” he said. “We must make our own miracles, Yechiel,” said Yechini. Shmuel Primo returned with the knife. Gamliel Basnoun, Mukian the Macedonian and others crowded into the room behind him. The commandant joined the soldiers at the door, and they watched the proceedings with fascination. In the center of the room, the lamb bleated with fright. Across the water, the sun sank slowly behind the clustered buildings on the Gallipoli peninsula, casting lavender shadows on the stone walls of the fortress suite. Shabbesai Tzvi stood in a corner, swaying from side to side. Suddenly, with a cry of immense joy, Shabbesai Tzvi ran to Shmuel Primo and took the slaughtering knife from his hand. He tested its edge for sharpness and nodded with satisfaction. A hush fell over the crowded room as Shabbesai Tzvi approached the lamb. He handed the knife to Mukian the Macedonian and placed both hands on the head of the lamb. His eyes were closed. His lips moved soundlessly. He then took the knife, and with one deft stroke, he slaughtered the lamb, collecting its blood in a basin. He dipped his finger in the blood of the lamb and touched it to the foreheads of those standing near him. Instantly, the others pushed forward to be touched with the blood of the lamb. Darkness fell. Under a star-speckled sky, Shabbesai Tzvi and his followers went down to the roasting pit that had been prepared in the inner courtyard of the fortress. Shabbesai Tzvi sat on a chair near the roasting lamb. The others squatted on the ground. “Before we eat from the Korban Pesach, we must first burn the chelev on the mizbe’ach,” he said, “but we have no mizbe’ach.” Shabbesai Tzvi stroked his beard thoughtfully. The flames in the roasting pit continued to lick at the lamb skewered on the spit. The glow of the fire painted the spellbound faces of Shabbesai Tzvi’s followers with eerie colors.
Yechiel struggled to suppress the dread awakened in his heart by the sight of the chelev. In a voice hoarse with tension, Yechiel repeated the blessing Shabbesai Tzvi had recited.

Agonizing Goodbyes at Dual Funerals for British Toddler Seven hundred people turned out last Monday night outside the Belzer Beis Midrash in Manchester to mourn two -year-old Alta Fixsler, who passed on after being disconnected from life support against her parents’ wishes. Alta, who sustained significant brain damage at birth, made worldwide headlines when a Manchester hospital decided that there was no medical benefit to prolonging her life and that removing her from life support was the only humane course of action, saying that she was in pain and that she would never be able to breathe or eat on her own. Arrangements were made to have Alta taken to either the United States or Israel for treatment at no charge to the British government, but the court blocked that move and denied an appeal by the Fixslers, insisting that it was unreasonable to assume that she would share their religious beliefs. A final bid by Avraham and Chaya Fixsler to allow their daughter to die at home was also rejected by the court, which insisted that she be removed from life support at a children’s hospice. Hamodia reported that a minyan of men sang in Alta’s room at the hospice as personnel disconnected the machinery that had kept her alive since birth. She passed away approximately 90 minutes later. At the first levayah held for the little girl, Belzer Dayan Harav Ahron Grinfeld spoke about the achdus that was in evidence as people rallied to support the Fixsler family, describing Alta as a korban tzibbur whose neshamah was completely pure when it departed this world. In an emotional hesped, Avraham Fixsler told Alta he had done all that he could for her and asked her to go to the Kisei Hakavod and daven that the family have the strength to continue. Arutz Sheva reported that at a second levayah held on Har Hamenuchos, Avraham Fixsler told his daughter that the family wanted her exactly as she was. “You were important, precious and sweet,” said Avraham Fixsler. “The whole family loved you. You were a pleasure to us. We are strong. There may be people who are ashamed of such a child, but we will

never forget you.” In a statement to Hamodia, Senator Chuck Schumer extended his prayers and support to the Fixsler family. Schumer, one of seven senators who asked British ambassador Karen Pierce to allow Alta to travel to the United States, had arranged a visa for the toddler and had personally advocated for her during a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “I continue to believe that the policy followed here was wrong on many levels and regret that our multiple, and legally and morally, well-grounded pleas were unheeded by the British authorities,” said Schumer. UJO of Williamsburg’s Rabbi Moshe Dovid Niederman who had advocated tirelessly for the Fixsler family categorized Alta’s passing as a loss to her family, the Jewish community and all those who value human life, and he criticized British authorities for their actions. “Instead of following the Hippocratic oath to ‘do no harm or injustice’ to their patients, doctors today took an action that resulted in their patient’s death,” said Rabbi Niederman. “This utter travesty against this helpless, pure, lovely child will never be forgotten. A country that supposedly doesn’t have capital punishment today enacted a death penalty couched in fancy legalese.” A statement released by Chayim Aruchim, Agudath Israel of America’s end-of-life division, noted that its hotline had been buzzing with calls from parents of seriously ill children who were concerned of a similar occurrence in the United States. Noting that it had heard from those who have been subjected to pressure from hospitals hoping to gain permission to not treat their critically ill children, Chayim Aruchim said that given prevailing trends in the medical community, it has been working closely with doctors and lawyers to protect patients’ religious rights. “Alta Fixsler’s death is a reminder that every moment of life is of inestimable value,” said the statement. “As we mourn her passing, we recommit ourselves to doing everything in our power to ensure that all patients, even the most seriously ill, have the opportunity to receive lifesaving care and to live out all of their days in accordance with Jewish law.”

After Almost Two Years, Israel to Allow Tourism to Resume on November 1, Albeit With Many Restrictions After having closed its borders to tourism in the earliest days of the pandemic, Israel has finally announced that it will be opening its borders to foreigners as of November 1, provided that they have been vaccinated or can prove that they recovered from COVID-19 within the last six months. An update released by Amudim, which has been at the forefront of facilitating Israel travel for students, those attending simchos, and in case of emergencies, listed the many categories of allowed travelers, along with a warning that policies are subject to change at any time. Among those who will be allowed into the country are: • People who received a Pfizer vaccine within the last six months but at least seven days prior to their arrival in Israel. • People who received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines within the last six months but at least fourteen days prior to their arrival in Israel. • People who received a Pfizer booster within the last six months but at least seven days prior to their arrival in Israel. • People who received a Moderna, Sinovac, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson booster within the last six months but at least fourteen days prior to their arrival in Israel. • People who recovered from COVID-19 and have received at least one dose of any COVID-19 vaccine approved by the World Health Organization. • People who live outside Israel and have recovered from COVID-19 who can present proof of a positive PCR test taken at least eleven days but not more than six months prior to their arrival in Israel. • Children who are less than twelve months old.
While the new guidelines will make it easier for many people to get into Israel, student visa holders who leave the country will not be allowed back into the country unless they meet the above criteria.

Early Voting Begins Statewide While Election Day may not be until November 2, early voting opened for New York State residents last weekend and will run through this Sunday. New York first began allowing early voting in 2019, giving those who might be unable to get to the polls on Election Day the ability to have their voices heard. Advocates have also said that early voting minimizes wait times on Election Day. According to NBC New York, more than 2.2 million people took advantage of early voting last November. There are several significant contests in New York City, with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams facing off against Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa in the race to replace Mayor Bill de Blasio in City Hall. The two men differed widely in their visions for the city during the first mayoral debate held last week. In it Sliwa accused Adams of being out of touch with the average New Yorker, while Adams disparaged Sliwa for what he termed “buffoonery,” which included false claims that he had been kidnapped years ago. Also being determined on Election Day are Brooklyn’s borough president and the city’s comptroller and public advocate. A statement released by Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, Agudath Israel of America’s director of New York Government Relations said simply “it is crucial that all of us vote.” Early voting poll sites and times are typically different from those of Election Day. To find your polling place go to www.findmypollsite.vote.nyc.
800 New Sanitation Workers Hit NYC Streets The New York City Department of Sanitation graduated its largest class since 2005 last week, with 800 new workers hitting city streets that could certainly use their expertise. DSNY Commissioner Ed Grayson waxed poetic about his years working for the department, measuring his career in winters — 23, to be exact. “Every year, I think back with pride about my colleagues, then and now, who wake up every single day to do everything they can to be dedicated public servants, having an impact on all New Yorkers’ lives as we do our jobs,” observed Grayson. “It is an honorable profession and was the best thing that ever happened to me.” With the addition of the new graduates, the department will now have 9,500 workers. Grayson said that the DSNY will be expanding its organics program to include some curbside collections and is looking into the possibility of electrifying its fleet of vehicles. Bushwick Daily reported that the new graduates are being spread out throughout the city. Meanwhile, DSNY press secretary Vincent Gragnani offered another option for keeping the five boroughs clean — the city’s Adopt a Basket Program, which has volunteers monitoring a designated city trash can. “With this program, Sanitation provides a regular supply of free plastic liners, a collection schedule, work gloves, a dustbin and broom,” explained Gragani. “We ask that volunteers monitor their litter baskets; when they’re three-quarters full, volunteers remove the used plastic liners, tie them, leave them next to the basket and insert a new liner.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE RECAP: In
Acco nearly a century earlier, Zelig Shikovitzer escapes from his home right before the British soldiers come searching for him. His worried father tells Binyamin Reiness, Zelig’s friend who is keeping his secret, to leave a message for Zelig that for everyone’s safety, he should not come home until morning.
T
he shul for Ashkenazi immigrants from Russia was located on the ground floor in a simple, two-story structure. Minchah was coming to a close, and Mr. Shikovitzer, the dedicated gabbai, distributed volumes of Mishnayos ahead of the rav’s shiur. Rabbi Betzalel Miller, who had reluctantly accepted the temporary position of rav, glanced at Binyamin, the only yeshivah bachur in the community, who sat down next to his father and opened his sefer. “Perhaps we can give Mr. Reiness’ son the honor of giving the shiur today,” he said. “Binyamin, will you give the shiur today instead of me? A bachur who’s already learning Nashim and Nezikin…” Binyamin raised his head from the volume of Mishnayos that he’d opened, and a small, bashful smile crossed his lips as he shook his head from side to side. His father looked at him with a nachas-filled smile, and Binyamin, feeling the heat rise to his cheeks, hurried to bury his eyes in the small sefer. “Nu, nu,” the gabbai said, “our Binyamin is bashful, Rabbi Miller. We’ll be happy to have the Rav give the shiur, as usual.” Binyamin tried to listen, but something gave him no peace. Whenever he raised his eyes, he encountered Zelig’s father’s gaze. They hadn’t exchanged a word with one another since the moment he’d come to shul for Minchah. Not only because they were careful not to speak about mundane matters in shul, but also because even

if it would have been just a random place, they hadn’t had a quiet moment of privacy. Zelig’s father looked… nervous? Yes. Worried, too. Yet remarkably enough, more than anything, he appeared angry. Had he already found out that Binyamin had failed to carry out his errand? Had the British caught Zelig? Binyamin bit his lips. He had gone to the market before coming to shul, but Zelig wasn’t at Wanunu’s fish stand, where he worked. The place had been teeming with soldiers, and two of them followed him the whole time. He deliberated whether to write a note and somehow stick it between the convulsing fish laid out on the wooden board, but he didn’t have a writing implement, and anyway, a note would immediately incriminate both him and Zelig. Because if everything was fine, and all was smooth and straight, then why did Zelig have to run away and only return home in the morning? And what about him? If the British would catch him sending messages to Zelig, they would immediately associate him with Protectors of Acco, a group of young Jewish men who had decided to take the law into their own hands and arm themselves with weapons of self-defense against the Arabs who wanted to harm them. The Arab population lived alongside the Jews of Acco in relative tranquility, for the most part. An example was Mahmoud, Mr. Shikovitzer’s longtime partner. But it was impossible to ignore the negative sentiments in the eyes of many Arabs, and between the lines when they spoke. Zelig and his friends were not the first of their kind. Already during the riots of 5680, a group had been formed, and twenty of its members had been imprisoned together with their leader here in the nearby Acco prison. The British did not like it when the Jews organized like that, sure as they were that these groups were the groundwork for an uprising against the Mandate.

***** “Nu?” Binyamin heard Mr. Shikovitzer address him. Binyamin had lingered after Maariv, letting all of the other mispallelim leave before him. His father and brother had also left, and besides for Shikovitzer, only he was left in the room. He began to return the siddurim and other seforim to their places. “Nu?” Yitzchak Shikovitzer said again. “Did you meet Wanunu?” “No,” Binyamin said quietly. “I was being trailed, and I didn’t want them to know that Zelig works for Wanunu. If they don’t already know that.” “If they don’t already know that…” Shikovitzer repeated

bitterly. “They know everything, these people. Why did my Zelig join those wild boys? What was he lacking?” Binyamin was quiet. “I’m going home now.” Zelig’s father looked awful, his face a dreadful combination of a worried pallor and a flush of anger. “And if Zelig comes, I’ll make it clear to him that he has to stop these dangerous games immediately. What does he think, that only son of mine?” He sighed. “You should go home, too, Binyamin. Are you coming to Shacharis tomorrow, or are you going to the Ramchal shul again?” Binyamin watched his neighbor lock the big door, and as he turned to the stairs leading to his apartment on the second floor, he looked out to the placid sea in the dark expanse, his expression inscrutable. In the last half a year, had Zelig risen early with his father to prepare the shul for davening, or had he already been busy in other places? How little Binyamin knew about his friend. “I’ll come here, b’ezras Hashem,” he said with a pleasant smile. The walk from the Shikovitzer home to his own normally took about a minute and a half, but this time it took longer, because without knowing exactly why, Binyamin decided to take the long way around, past the horse and buggy workshop. Mahmoud was standing in the large lot, which was illuminated by an oil lantern that hung down from the pole Zelig had installed the previous summer. Mahmoud was brushing down a good-looking brown horse, while the Arab owner, sporting a curled mustache, tapped his foot impatiently. “Hey, Binyamin!” Mahmoud called. “How are you? Why did you come back?” “I might have left something here,” Binyamin said, his eyes darting in every direction. He had left lots of things here: his innocence, the calm with which he had come home from yeshivah, the trust he’d had in Zelig, and perhaps even Zelig himself. “But it’s locked already,” Mahmoud said. “You know that only Yitzchak has the keys. I’m also going home soon, but this guy just came with something urgent. He couldn’t come in the morning or what?” He chuckled as he stuck his hand out to get his payment from the Arab. The Arab scolded him in Arabic, perhaps about the quality of his work or about the length of time it had taken, and Mahmoud screamed right back at him. Binyamin turned away from both of them and headed toward the workshop. But as Mahmoud had said, the door was locked. Binyamin went around to the back of the hut. The old, partially broken-down paddock was still standing there. About six years earlier, when Mr. Shikovitzer bought the lot, he built a new, better paddock that hid the old one that remained behind it. Binyamin walked slowly, looking at the crumbling railings that hadn’t been painted or tended to in years. Rusty wheels and rotting harnesses were tossed about, and thorns and brambles grew wild. The darkness grew thicker as Binyamin reached the corner of the paddock. He stood there, motionless, straining only his eyes. He’d spent many vacation days as a child right here, between the gates of the paddock. There wasn’t a better hiding place around. And Zelig certainly hadn’t forgotten about it. He advanced carefully, one step and then another. “Zelig?” he whispered, in the lowest tone he could manage. “Zelig, if you’re there — your father asked that you don’t come home tonight.” “Okay. But did you bring me something to eat?” The answer came so swiftly that Binyamin was startled. He could hardly see a thing, but he noticed a thorny, tangled bush moving slightly right next to him on the other side of the gate. “No,” he said ruefully. “I’m sorry.”
“Followed you!” Zelig’s voice was sharp. “And…?”

“What did you think? That the soup from lunch would be enough for me?” “You know, I went to look for you at Wanunu’s place, in the market,” Binyamin whispered. “And the British came there too; they followed me.” “Followed you!” Zelig’s voice was sharp. “And…?” “I think they realized they have nothing to worry about with me.”
okay?” Binyamin was quiet. He glanced at his twelve-year-old brother, who was sleeping in the main room. “How is yeshivah?” “Baruch Hashem, wonderful.” “How are the Arabs there? Do they hate you?” “Not especially. Mr. Slonim, the director of the local bank, is a very good friend of theirs, and their relations with the community and the yeshivah seem to be fine. I mean, an Arab might say something silly to me in the street, but nothing more than that.” “That’s good. Here in Acco they are a bit more edgy, even if it’s not that serious.” Then she added quietly, “For now.” “Yes, I met Mahmoud, Zelig’s father’s partner. He acted and sounded total normal.” “Oh, right, you went to Zelig. How is he doing?” Binyamin looked at his empty plate, and didn’t respond. “I haven’t seen him around here for a long time,” his mother said, and something in her tone was different. “I thought he wasn’t in town anymore, but it seemed strange to me that he would leave his father alone. It isn’t like him.” “Not at all,” Binyamin answered, with the heaviness of an 80-year-old. His mother fixed him with a look. “Did he leave Acco?” “No.” “So what’s not like him?” Binyamin sighed. “He’s changed,” he said after a moment, selecting his words carefully. “And I feel bad about our friendship. He still sees me as his friend, though, and he’s expecting my help…” “Your help?” Binyamin sighed again. “Things

But then don’t go to my father now to bring me something to eat, because if they see you spending too much time with him, they’ll realize that you probably have information they want, and they’ll hunt you down. It’s all right — I’ll starve a little longer. Don’t feel bad.” ***** “Binyamin?” His mother looked at him worriedly as he ate. He was very distracted, and didn’t even seem to notice what he was putting in his mouth. “What?” He continued staring at the tablecloth even as he stuck the last piece of bread into his mouth. “Binyamin, how are you?” She sat down across from him, forcing him to raise his gaze and look into her eyes. “Is everything okay?” He tried to smile. “Baruch Hashem, yes.” “So, what isn’t okay?” She smiled at him too, but her eyes were worried. “I don’t know if it’s connected to yeshivah or not, but something is not okay, Binyamin. I can tell. What is it?” “Everything is fine with me, baruch Hashem,” he repeated. “And with whom are things not

aren’t the same between us anymore. Very much not. Each of us has gone to such a different place… But I do owe him hakaras hatov. Do you remember what a shy, anxious boy I was when we came here, and how he really helped me find my footing?” “You gave him no less than he gave you,” his mother declared warmly. “But I agree that hakaras hatov is a very important middah, and that Zelig indeed helped you a lot. So what are you deliberating about?” “I don’t know if I can help him now. If I’m even allowed to help him.” His mother was quiet. “Look, based on the bit that I saw a few months ago…” she said hesitantly, toying with the aluminum fork that had come with them from Russia, “you don’t really look like any of his new friends. I thought it was just a one-off thing, but if you’ve also noticed it after just one encounter, then maybe it is a real change, unfortunately. And it’s better for you to keep your distance from him, then. As for hakaras hatov? Ask Tatte tomorrow.” She rose. “Go to sleep, Binyamin. It’s late. You’ve had a long, tiring day.” She didn’t even know the half of it. Binyamin didn’t ask which new friends she was referring to, and when and how she’d seen them. Was she concerned about their religious standards, and feared that they would be a bad influence on him? Or did she realize that it was an illegal organization that they belonged to? Either way, it was becoming all too clear to Binyamin that Zelig was no longer good friend material for him. The question was what to do now. “I’m going to sleep,” he said after bentching. “I promised Zelig’s father that I’d come to shul early tomorrow morning to help him.” Because Zelig, apparently, had no intention of showing up. “It’s colic”
Bina’s story — or rather, her son’s story — began when the child was a newborn baby. He was one of those infants who made the angelic babies in glossy brochures and magazine pages seem like a dream; could babies really be that sweet and happy, just bundles of gurgles and coos?
“It’s colic,” the doctor said. “It’s colic,” Bina would tell whoever wondered about the baby who wouldn’t stop crying. But the crying didn’t stop when Dovi outgrew his colic. “He cried nonstop throughout his whole first year,” Bina says. “I tried sleep-training courses, Little Dovi just screamed. different diets, natural solutions and everyWith balled fists and a thing else under the sun, but nothing helped.” Bina had a feeling that her son was in severe scrunched-up red little face, pain, but all routine tests came back negative. Finally, when Dovi was a year old and regularly his continuous squalling throwing himself across the room from pain, filled every corner of the Bina parked him in front of his pediatrician and said, “I’m not stepping out of this room unhouse until his parents til you figure out what’s wrong with my child.” It was then that the doctor gave Dovi another could hear nothing else. thorough physical examination and found a minor problem that had a simple surgical solution. “It’s so important to have a pediatrician who doesn’t wave away your concerns,” Bina says impassionately. “And when tests come back negative but the symptoms are still there, that doesn’t mean that everything’s okay. Hashem wants you to go through this journey, but that doesn’t mean that you should stop seeking a solution!”
“He’ll grow out of it” At this point, Dovi was finally getting the medical help he needed, but the emotional damage was done. After such a difficult infant- and toddlerhood, there was just something about Dovi that seemed off. He was an overwhelmingly irritable child, easily given to tantrums and extremely odd and repetitive behaviors. “People thought it was adorable,” Bina says. “But when a child is attached to specific items of clothing or anything else to the point where a suitcase is needed to hold it all wherever they go, then that’s a problem. It’s okay for a child to have a much-loved blankie or something,” she clarifies. “But when a child can’t function without their special something, or when parting with it in order to go to school or into the car means a huge meltdown, then something’s wrong.” Everyone who encountered Dovi had heaps of advice for Bina. “He’ll grow out of it,” they said. Or, “He just needs more love/discipline/structure/punishment.”

About the Program: The Brainstorm Approach The goal of Mrs. Merzbach’s Brainstorm Approach is developing a healthy brain by following the theory of A+B=C. Put simply, A refers to input, which refers to the five senses. B refers to healthy brain processes like grasping information, problem-solving, decision-making, comparing and contrasting, as well as having spatial awareness, a healthy imagination, and more. Once a child has the foundational A and B, then C can follow. C refers to output, including communication, controlled behavior, and putting into effect what the child understands. A large part of Mrs. Merzbach’s method involves having the child perform specific physical exercises that train both sides of the brain to work together at the same time. Encouraging opposite sides of the body to cross over and work in tandem results in a healthy interactive brain where both sides function at the same level. Once both sides of the brain form new connections, the child will learn to harness both their logic and emotions simultaneously. That’s why this training, which begins with the physical, soon spills over into other areas of the child’s life, gifting them with the skills we hardly think about until they’re glaringly missing. These include body awareness, spatial awareness, phonological awareness, visual perception, brain organization, impulse control and so on, as well as improved sensory experiences and social interactions, lessened anxiety, and so much more.

Bina says: Or, “Why don’t you take a If your child is struggling, parenting course?” or does not seem connect“Can you imagine what ed to their own self or their this did to my confidence surroundings, then there’s as a mother?” Bina asks. no need to panic. There’s “Apparently, I wasn’t dohelp available. And when a ing anything right, and I child is acting oddly, then was making an issue out of something that ‘only needdiagnoses and reasons ed discipline’! But healthy really don’t matter. All we parents naturally are want is for the child to be blinded with love when functioning and happy. it comes to their child. There’s no way they’re going to create an issue or see problems where there aren’t any!” Bina then explains that there’s a pattern here. “When we hear these things from other people, and we see that what worked for other kids doesn’t work for our own kids, then we immediately question ourselves: Maybe there’s something wrong with me! In the meantime, the child is suffering, and the connection between parent and child steadily grows weaker.”
Connecting the disconnect At this point, Bina had been teaching for seven years, both in the classroom and one-on-one, and had an impressive list of certifications under her belt. She’d always wondered if there wasn’t a single approach that would help struggling children advance in all areas at once. She’d work with children with their reading, see some progress, and then start again from scratch in other areas, like math, or even socially. Did that make sense? she’d ask herself. Why wasn’t there a tool to help children thrive in a more comprehensive way? Now Bina found herself wondering about this again, only this time it was her son at stake. She could tell that there was something about Dovi that wasn’t alive; there was some kind of disconnect. She tried speech therapy, play therapy, lots of sensory work, but his progress was minimal. It was like something in his brain still had to click, but she didn’t know what it was. Dovi’s pediatrician was very determined not to have the Friedmans look into any kind of intensive programs. “You don’t want him in special ed if he doesn’t strictly need it,” she said. “Until a child is five years old, their brain is like rubber. It’ll expand with time. Don’t get him stuck with a label!” Bina heard her

Reflexes and You Another part of the Brainstorm Approach is reflex integration. Hashem created in every newborn a variety of reflexes that aid in the child’s development. A small infant will root when hungry, curl their fingers when something is placed in their palm, and extend or flex their extremities based on the direction their head is facing. This is but a sampling of the reflexes present in a healthy infant.
point, but it felt like time was running out; by now Dovi was almost three. This milestone, of course, also meant that it was time for cheder. The first time Bina dropped him off at the imposing building, she cried. Dovi was so far from ready. He was barely verbal, and he was neither emotionally nor socially equipped to deal with the dynamics of a classroom. But what was there to do? If it was time to go to cheder, and that was protocol, then that’s where Dovi went. Dovi’s menahel and rebbi reassured Bina that all would be fine, that Dovi’s odd behaviors were just a child playing; his manner of dress was just a phase he’d outgrow, they said. But Bina knew that there was something very wrong. She kept him home on Sundays and took him for speech therapy, OT, PT — everything that offered a slim chance of success. Bina says: “These issues don’t straighten out on their own,” Bina says. “Children Parents sometimes don’t ‘outgrow’ them; all they outwonder whether grow is their age.” their child will fall Dovi’s progress, however, was back once they comstill minimal. He had a host of odd plete the program, physical and repetitive behaviors, and the answer is and his reactions and strange manthat they won’t. This nerisms were concerning. And the program is just like frustration of a child who is misslearning how to read, ing all basic classroom skills easily eat from a plate, or translates to meltdowns at home. Finally, when Dovi was four, ride a bike. There’s someone in cheder mentioned Mrs. no “unlearning” it. Merzbach. Only children with “I will forever be grateful to that more severe mental rebbi,” Bina says fervently. “Our visit conditions, whose to Mrs. Merzbach changed our lives brains are unfortuforever.” nately wired a bit differently, need continuous help to retain what they learn.

As a child develops, and the reflexes are no longer necessary for them to reach their basic milestones, these reflexes are integrated and no longer appear. This means that an older child will no longer have their body move by reflex, but will rather actively choose their movements. In some children, however, their reflexes do not naturally integrate. In these cases, those retained reflexes can result in a lack of the skills mentioned above, and the child may even be misdiagnosed as suffering from ADHD. “As long as there is a disconnect anywhere in the body,” Bina explains, “then the child will have behaviors that seem off. In order for a child to thrive and connect to their surroundings, the connections to their brain need to be strong. “Imagine witnessing a child catch a ball for the first time, or sitting on a chair for the first time.” Bina laughs with pleasure. “The thrill of it never gets old.”

Listen to a short introduction
Bina says: Sometimes mothers want an easy fix and insist on sending their child during the time of day that works for them — and I completely understand that. But if you want to do what’s best for your child, then schedule sessions for when you know your child will be bright and energized. If your child is young and tends to be irritable at night, then chances are that at that hour they’ll no longer have the energy they need to complete the workout. Truly investing the time to complete this program is not easy, but parents — and yes, both parents together — would do well to remember that the effort they put in may be the price of saving their child. The key is to stay focused on the long-term goal of your child’s successful future.
fear of pinning their hopes too high, but finally the day arrived, and the Friedmans met with Mrs. Merzbach. “The moment we entered the room,” Bina says, “I relaxed. The energy was one of acceptance, of calm, and Mrs. Merzbach was just so, so kind and nonthreatening. We’d done plenty of evaluations at that point, but this was the first time there was no blame and no judgment. It was just about getting to know Dovi. “As I watched Dovi being tested, I kept hoping he’ll just find one shape, remember one word, catch the ball just once — but he failed every single part of the evaluation. And for the very first time during an evaluation, I simply broke down. It was so very painful to watch, and this time there was no judgment holding me back from just falling apart.” Mrs. Merzbach’s room felt safe enough for Bina to actually acknowledge what she was feeling, but the pain of watching her son fail test after test also came with a kernel of hope. What Mrs. Merzbach was doing just felt different, more accepting, and it was like Dovi was being evaluated by someone who was simply another Yiddishe mother. “After the hour was up,” Bina continues, “Mrs. Merzbach told us that we did nothing wrong as parents, and that there’s hope. Then she did one more thing.” As Dovi’s parents watched, Mrs. Merzbach picked up Dovi and held him tightly in her arms. Then she began whispering positive affirmations, one after the next, into Dovi’s ear, all while holding him tight. “You’re such an amazing little boy,” murmured. “Everyone loves you. You’re wonderful! You’re going to be able to do amazing things. You’re such a cute little boy, such a wonder…” “This went on for five whole minutes,” Bina says. “And when she was done, Dovi didn’t want to leave her lap. I was actually pretty offended about that,” she admits with a laugh. “But I was also hopeful. It was the very first time I watched him actually connect to another person.” When the Friedmans took their leave from Mrs. Merzbach, they were armed with her support and love, and also homework: to hold Dovi every day for five minutes, just like she did, and whisper loving statements into his ear. “When we left, we were practically on a high. Once all the blame and judgment were out of the way, we were finally able to look toward the future. For a change, the evaluation hadn’t been all about the ‘whys’ and the labels. Here the purpose was simply to see how to move forward, and it felt so liberating.”
“I gave up my job,” Bina says matter-offactly, “because how could I neglect my own kid to help other children?

A journey in tandem Mrs. Merzbach soon gave the Friedmans a list of people she’d trained in, but no one Bina felt comfortable with was available. And facing another four- or five-month wait was just unthinkable! Dovi was inching closer to five years of age every day. Finally, a rebbi at Dovi’s cheder suggested Bina go for training herself. “You’ve been working with kids for so long,” he said. “Go back to Mrs. Merzbach, and get some training!” And that’s exactly what Bina did. “The training was really intense, as I was researching everything that I was being taught until it all made sense, but I was full of hope and energy. And so was my husband! I’m so grateful for that because this is not a journey a parent can undertake without support,” Bina adds. While Bina was still training, her husband kept busy building sensory toys and stations like mazes, a wall climbing unit, monkey bars, and other equipment she’d need. It was a family project all the way, and the advantage? Dovi was so excited about it that it really gave him the push to succeed. “I gave up my job,” Bina says matter-of-factly, “because how could I neglect my own kid to help other children? And every morning, when Dovi was still fresh and energized, we would go to our room and work together for an hour. This meant that my husband manned the fort at home, putting the other kids onto the bus while we worked, and then drove Dovi to cheder an hour after class began.” And this is what they did every single morning. Such dedication is mind-boggling, but Dovi’s future very plainly hung in the balance. “I was hooked,” Bina said. “Here was finally that program I was always dreaming about! Everything clicked together in such a satisfying way; I only wished I’d have had the knowledge a few years sooner so I could help all of those students who’d struggled.” All those children who’d sit under desks, or touch everything in sight, or throw things across the room — there was a solution, only it would take a few more years for Bina to discover it. Now, after beginning to work with her son, it took about four weeks of intense work until Bina saw results and over a year for Dovi to reach grade level. “Today,” Bina says, the emotion in her voice palpable, “unbelievably, my son is at the top of the class in all areas. He’s doing wonderfully — academically, socially and emotionally. Looking at him now, you’d never believe this is the same child we struggled with. “As parents,” she concludes, “Hashem gifts us with the inner wisdom to help our children. Don’t let neighbors, family, friends or teachers discourage you, ever. And may Hashem indeed guide us to help our children be their own very best selves.”
Once all the blame and judgment were out of the way, we were finally able to look toward the future.

It was an identity crisis, if there ever was one. It seemed like everyone, when put to task, had a solid idea whether they were an introvert or extrovert. But I always found myself straddling the gap between the two.
Do you know these tests where you have to answer each question with a range of options between “strongly agree” and “strongly disagree”? I always found myself picking the middle one, which basically left me in no man’s land, an anomaly. As for the other tests, the answer was always: It depends. Do you recharge by socializing or being alone? It depends on the day. Do you like to work collaboratively or on your own? It depends on the job. If you have a day off, would you choose to go out with friends or stay in to read? It depends on what I would have done the day before.
And it was by far not the only test that left me without conclusive answers. Do you remember the famous sneaker test telling you whether you’re left or right-brained (a myth since debunked)? Well, every time I looked at the picture I saw different colors! But when it comes to levels of intro- or extraversion, at least, it seems I (and those of you who likewise belong neither here nor there) do have a place in society. Because I’ve since learned that when it comes to measuring where one instinctively turns for energy, introvert and extrovert are not the only two designations. Intro- or extraversion falls on a spectrum, and those of us who find that we are not dominant on either side actually fall into a category, too. Because many of us are ambiverts. We tend to turn in both directions. And turn we do, so unpredictably sometimes that we can find ourselves unsure of what we need or want. And the people around us might perceive us differently from the way we do.
THE BASIC PR EMISE Introverts draw energy from their internal systems. They enjoy solitary activities like reading and writing. They find social interactions exhausting. Their energy expands when they’re reflecting, and they get drained by being around a lot Taking of people. It Apart Extroverts draw Semantically energy from exterIntroverts turn nal sources. Neither this, nor that. Both this and that.
THE STRUGGLES While one might think that the ambivert is that perfect “golden middle” that has the best of both worlds, being one actually poses some unique challenges. If you identify with these struggles, you may just be an ambivert.

› Oops, there’s a change of plans… It sounded exciting when you told your friend to come over, agreed to go shopping with company, or made plans to spend the day out with the kids, but then the day arrives and you would so much rather stay home in your comfortable house clothes and take it easy. While the extrovert in you may have planned these outings, the introverted side decides not to go. So you are the friend who can be relied upon — to back out at the last minute. If you are a true ambivert, however, if you do end up going, you usually won’t regret it. You are bound to arrive home refreshed and rejuvenated, unlike introverts who would be simply drained.
› I haven’t decided yet… Introverts and extroverts often know what they need. One will, by default, want to stay in, while the other one will gravitate to going out. One will choose
to work alone; the other is the life of the team. But you are not quite sure what you want. When faced with a choice, you’re often torn, knowing each option will refresh you or drain you in a different way. And it’s hard to make up your mind! So you will often push off making a decision. “Oh, I never responded to your message… I’m so sorry!” is probably something you end up saying often. And you are probably also familiar with the feeling of realizing that the day is almost over, but you have not yet decided how to fill it… And trust me, ambiverts hate having FOMO.

show them your side that loves friends — that’s why you have so many of them! But you don’t always have the extroverted energy to keep up.
› That is so not me! People with whom you are comfortable may often know your extroverted part, which is why they don’t know to respect the fact that you have introverted tendencies, too. So when you find yourself suddenly being prodded to the center of the room, or — the horror! — to the mike to lead Tehillim, they don’t take your protests seriously. And you really do feel like fainting.
THE POW ERS OF THE A MBI V ERT Hey, it’s not all challenge and struggle. Ambiverts do have a certain balance that stands them in good stead.
› You’re a good conversationalist. Since you have the great listening skills of an introvert, and yet are not shy to express your opinion, the conversation has potential to flow really smoothly.
› You get the mood. When at a gathering, since you understand both extroverts and introverts, you can often bring balance by breaking an awkward silence with small talk to make everyone feel at ease.
I N T R O V E R T, E X T R O V E R T OR A MBI V ERT? Still not sure where you fall on the spectrum? Take this quiz to find out. Choose the answer that describes you the best.
› You meet someone who just moved to your block. How do you greet her? 1. You enthusiastically welcome her, introduce yourself and show her where you live. You play a quick round of Jewish Geography and invite the kids over. 2. You say hi, introduce yourself and ask how they’re settling in. 3. You smile shyly, and then struggle to be friendly, since you don’t want her to interpret your shyness as disinterest.
› There’s an issue at work. What would you do? 1. Immediately schedule a meeting with your supervisor or other relevant parties to figure out a solution to the problem. 2. Depending on the issue, sometimes you’d figure it out on your own, and other times consult with a superior to solve it. 3. Think through the situation well, and when what’s going on is clear to you, approach your supervisor. Although, really, you’d hope things will work out before you need to broach the topic.
› Your old school friend suggests that a Chanukah party should be arranged. What is most likely to be your reaction? 1. “I’m in. Let’s invite the entire class! It would be such fun!”
› You can be a great manager. When it comes to managerial positions, you are at an advantage because you can display the right qualities based on the need. You can take center stage and control when needed, but you can also step back and really listen.
2. “Sounds like fun! I’ll be happy to contribute, but I might arrive a little late, depending on my plans that day.” 3. “How about just the two of us get together in a cozy place in honor of Chanukah?”
› You have a day off. What is most likely in your plans? 1. “I hope one of my sisters will be available to spend time with me!” 2. You plan for a lazy morning and you’ll probably do some shopping afterward. 3. Ah, I’m heading back to bed with an iced cappuccino and your favorite book. And you don’t forget to turn all your ringers off.
› You are attending a N’shei party. What’s the first thing you do? 1. Scout out the place for where the action is and head there to join the fun.

› You walk into a fundraising event to see the program has begun. A whole bunch of people turn around when they hear the door hinge squeak. What do you do? 1. My name is Mimi Eigner. I’m a creative, and I wear many hats… all of which rest comfortably and proudly atop my red hair. My view on red hair is that it’s a distinction and a gift from Hashem. Others believe it’s a curse — a warped concept that some say is based on an old wives’ tale back in the alte heim, where red hair was an anomaly. Yet the Torah tells a different story. Dovid Hamelech, himself a fiery redhead, was an especially successful king and beloved by Hashem. And throughout the ages, many other tzaddikim also carried this distinction. I’m assured that this “curse” is not only an honor, but a blessing. There’s one thing that really makes me see red (pardon the pun): when parents are embarrassed of their red-haired children. Ashamed of their child — who is a soul, an entire world — because of something that is beyond their control! (Baruch Hashem, I’ve received nothing but support from my parents, who couldn’t be prouder.) My friend was recently at a wedding where she noticed a redheaded woman of about my age. People tell me all the time that the two of us look alike, and I truly take it as a compliment! But I happen to know that this particular woman resents her coloring, partly because she feels that her mother favors her sister, a brunette. At this wedding, my friend kept thinking she was seeing me! She tapped her mother and pointed discreetly across the hall, saying, “Doesn’t that redhead look like Mimi?” Unfortunately, the redhead in question made eye contact just as my friend was mouthing the words “that redhead.” Boy, did she get an angry glare! When an acquaintance of mine gave birth to gorgeous twins with the most adorable reddish fuzz, her motherin-law, who’d come to visit her at the hospital, was horrified. “Don’t worry, there are things to be done for it these days,” she told the new mother. “You can always dye it when they get a little older.” “Ma,” her wise daughter-in-law replied, “they’re mine, and they’re perfect just the way they are!” Apparently, this dislike spills over to the shidduch scene. Some of my own siblings have gotten countless noes because of their hair color. We can laugh each one off, because at the end of the day, it’s the easiest no to accept. It’s something we cannot change, and guess what? We don’t even want to! The funniest story was when another redhead was the one to give the no (and yes, shadchanim tend to match us by hair color, or at least it looks like they do…) because he didn’t want to doom his future children to redhairdom… As if playing G-d would allow him to customorder his children’s looks! Having red hair is like an entry ticket to the club, whether you like it or not. I can meet the eyes of a fellow redhead and feel a sense of kinship (or hostility, which I try to return with a comradely grin). At other times, it can be a starter for fascinating conversation with equally fascinating people. I’ve found many redheads to be creative, cheerful and spunky, and fearlessly different. There are stories to exchange, too, while we laugh over comments like, “You’re so lucky that you have dark eyebrows. You can get a dark wig, and no one will ever know!” (which I refuse to do, by the way, no matter the cost) and, “My dentist gives me so much Novocain that my whole face goes numb, because he says that redheads have a lower pain tolerance.” All of this may seem excessive, because aren’t we discussing a single physical feature? We should be above these shallow externals! In truth, however, most of us are, most of the time... Yes, being a redhead impacts my life, and the lives of many others out there like me, in countless ways. You’d be surprised by just how many! In a society where people aim to blend in and be like everyone else, we stand out. Which makes us, in turn, more sensitive to others who are externally different (and, as some say, more sensitive in general! But I digress). What we all have to keep in mind is that a Yid is his or her neshamah. We were all created in the image of Hashem, with love and care, by His Design. Shouldn’t we be respectful of His handiwork?

Reflexes are the body’s way of responding to stimuli without using the conscious part of the brain. They’re things you do naturally without thinking, such as throwing up your arms when a ball is flying at your face or snatching your hand away from something hot.
You May Kick the Doctor If your doctor ever comes at you with a little rubber mallet, you have full permission to kick him — in fact, he wants you to! By hitting the area under your knee, he’s trying to activate your patellar, or knee jerk, reflex, making sure that a particular path of nerves and spinal cord is working as it should be.
Odd in an Adult Babies are a world unto their own, and the reflexes they exhibit aren’t always the same ones that adults have. Here are a few that differ by age: The Step Reflex: Have you ever seen an uber-smart baby who just knows how to walk from day one? Well, that little genius isn’t alone… In fact, it’s normal for newborns to perform dance steps or appear to be ready to run when held upright. This step reflex usually disappears at around the two-month mark.
The Fencing Reflex: Sword-baring babies? Not quite… But if you turn a newborn’s head to one side, a reflex should kick in whereby the arm at the back of the head will curl up and the arm in front will extend. En garde!
The Babinski Reflex Aside from being fun to say, this test could lead to giggles… A doctor will rub something on the bottom of a foot to test the Babinski reflex. In healthy adults, the natural tendency is for the toes to curl down. In children under the age of two, the tendency is for the toes to stick up and spread out.
The Palmar Reflex Aside from being brilliant walkers, newborns are naturally strong. If you place two fingers inside each palm of a newborn, their reflex is to tightly grip your fingers. They’re so strong that you might be able to lift them up that way — but please don’t!

Tap, tap, tap... Between your nose and your eyes is a spot called the glabella. If tapped on the glabella, most people blink, but will stop blinking after several taps. If they continue blinking, it may be a sign of an abnormality in the brain and warrants investigation.
I’m Not Emotional!
I’m Soooo Tired!
EVER FOUND YOURSELF CRYING OVER AN ONION? THOSE TEARS ARE REFLEX TEARS, DESIGNED TO WASH AWAY EYE IRRITANTS.
The yawn reflex is little understood and theories about it abound. Some hypotheses posit that we yawn when our bodies need more oxygen, our brain needs cooling down, or when the body needs to transition from wakefulness to sleep or vice versa. One thing that is well known is that yawns are contagious!
Natural Protection The eyelids are designed to protect the sensitive eyeball, and these protective barriers automatically slide into place when anything threatens to come near one’s eyes. Dovid Hamelech wrote of this natural protection in Tehillim 17:8, where it says, “Shamreni k’ishon bas ayin — Guard me like the pupil of the eye.”

Rav Avigdor Miller
ON MAKEUP FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS Posted on May 11, 2021by TorasAvigdor
Q: A:
Do you feel that there’s anything wrong with high school girls wearing makeup?
I think it’s an important question, so pay attention. I know that fifty girls came here tonight to hear the lecture so listen well. We see it’s an important Torah principle that women should make themselves presentable to their husbands. It’s considered an important thing. However, this is for married women and at home. Married women on the street should try to limit the conspicuous forms of makeup. At home, for your husband, it’s a mitzvah. It’s a mitzvah always to be beautiful at home. The women, however, who welcome their husband on hands and knees on the floor, scrubbing the floor and he walks in – and she’s crabby too – but when she goes into the street she’s dressed fit to kill, she is doing just the opposite of her function. She makes herself attractive to strangers and not to her husband. And that’s exactly what the Yetzer Hara wants. And therefore, home is the place to be attractive. On the street, be as plain as possible. Still better, you shouldn’t be seen. Girls, as much as possible don’t be seen. Now, if you’re not married, you don’t need makeup unless you have to go out. It pays to invest efforts to get a chashuveh ben Torah and a chashuve ben Torah – even a Lakewooder or even a Satmerer – also wants something with good wrappings around it. And therefore, you should make it your business to go to the beautician before you go out your first or second time. Otherwise, high school girls who are not in the marriage market yet should avoid wearing any makeup. It’s a waste of effort and it’s applied in the wrong situation. TAPE # 52 (July 1974)
