ehT rebbe’s edis When you hear that one of your talmidim is sick with cancer, all the wind gets knocked out of you.

I

It feels…impossible that a good-hearted, smart, spirited little kid should have the crushing burden of this dreaded disease.

I can still see him in my classroom: forgetting to do his homework, raising his hand to answer a question in class, running outside the second the bell rings for recess. Compare that to the reality today and it doesn’t fit the boy in the hospital. How do we relate to that? We–his rebbeim, his teachers, his school– want to shoulder the burden somehow. But how? Do I call him? Should I visit more? I hurt for him and his family, but I don’t know how to show it. What does one say to a talmid who is staring death in the face?

STANDING WITH RCCS SIDE BY SIDE:

ven as mature adults, we may feel uncertainty because we don't want to cause further pain by saying or doing the wrong thing to the choleh or his family. We’re

also sensitive to the stigma of shame mistakenly attached to being on the "receiving end" (aka "the nebach"). However, there are ways to show sincere compassion and support that make the recipient feel "normal," cared for, and uplifted. Tips for interacting with your sick talmid TIP #1 Be your most authentic self in your interactions. That will help your talmid be his most authentic self and feel comfortable to share with you. TIP #2 Practice empathy, not sympathy: Attempt to imagine what it’s like to be in his shoes, at his age, with this confusion, fear, and resentment. TIP #3 Encourage, but also provide an open space for your talmid to express his fears and resentment without feeling judged. TIP #4 Do not hesitate to contact your talmid's parents, siblings, and friends to find out about his interests, hobbies, or what may cheer him up (music, stories, Yeshiva updates…) TIP #5 And finally: never underestimate the power of humor. Everyone needs a good laugh, even under serious circumstances! (Of course, choose a moment that feels right.)

The nightmare of cancer goes beyond the choleh.

A WONDERFUL SHALIACH

(Re: The Room Where Hope Happens, Issue 106) Thank you, E.M. Neiman, for the chizuk the story you wrote engendered and for raising this important topic. I have so much hakaros hatov to Mrs. Merzbach, who is a wonderful shaliach for struggling children. We were in a difficult situation with our own daughter and saw major progress through the Brainstorm program, and baruch Hashem, she graduated the program after reaching great milestones. B.G.

(Re: Well-Red, Issue 106) I’d like to join the conversation about redheads, which Mimi Eigner started. Gingies have a fiery, feisty personality, blondes have more fun, brunettes are more introverted and conservative, black-haired folks are spiritual and poetic, brown hair implies reliability, and white hair indicates a Vitamin B-12 deficiency (and there I was thinking it had something to do with age!). Really?! These are all stereotypical descriptions. Have we really nothing better to do than evaluate a person based on his/her genetic hair color? It never occurred to me to be super grateful to my mechutanim for accepting my red-haired children as spouses for their brown-, black- or blonde-haired offspring. Do you recognize a single individual who considers a “red-haired”

person a curse or deems their “red-headed” child an embarrassment? I most certainly do not. Redheaded siblings do tend to look alike to strangers, though, because their beautifully striking hair color so overwhelms their other features. I have several redheaded sons, all married and living in distinctly different neighborhoods, and it often happens that people confuse them and give me regards from the wrong son. Let me regale you with some more trivia on the topic: The origin of the term “gingy” is debatable. Whether it’s a reference to ginger’s sandy coloring, the reddish tint associated with ginger-flavored food, or that ginger root adds spice to foods, use the term with care. Redheaded people may prefer to be called by their given name rather than by “gingy.” I’m not sure if the author knows this, but Redhead Day is November 5; talk about a timely article! Obviously, the term should be “orange-head,” but since red is one of the three primary colors, and orange was not a word used to signify color until the 1540s, the moniker stuck. For some more fun facts: only 2% of the world’s population has red hair (it is the rarest hair color in the world), redheads are more sensitive to pain, they are more likely to be left-handed, commonly have brown eyes, and bees are more attracted to redheads! (Re: Inbox, Issue 105) Thank you for a wonderful publication. It is a treat for us every week! I’m writing in response to the letter in which someone wrote that the bracha for craisins is Ha’eitz. I used to make Ha’eitz all my years on craisins and cranberries, until I was told that the right bracha is actually Ha’adama. I then consulted with a number of dayanim, and they each said that the right bracha is Ha’adama. (Disclaimer: Generally, one should heed the psak of their own daas Torah and not go hunt for other pesakim, but in this case I was just curious to know whether there was more than one opinion on the bracha for this food.) So I’d like to make this correction, and of course, encourage others to double-check with their own halachic authority. A Reader

Electrolysis and laser are the most common permanent hair removal techniques. Laser works best on larger areas of condensed, darker hair, while electrolysis is for areas with finer, fewer hairs. Think of it like detailed hair removal, especially for delicate skin like your face or upper lip. Still, there are times when either treatment type will be more effective than the other, which is why it’s important to devise a treatment plan for laser and electrolysis based on your hair, density, body, skin color and pain tolerance.

column. It’s the first page I turn to when I open The Boro Park View! In the October 20th issue, there was a recipe for “Chicken With Brown Rice.” Since I’m allergic to peppers and others in the family don’t like mushrooms, I substituted those vegetables with diced zucchini, parsnip and carrots, and it came out delicious! It is such a perfect supper; it’s healthy, filling, tasty and best of all — made in one pan! Thank you! Goldie

(Re: Oven to Table, Issue 105) I have a question about the recipe “Chicken Stew, Rice and Peas.” If I’d like to use brown rice instead of the white rice that the recipe calls for, how much water should I use and what should the cooking time be? It looks delicious, and I can’t wait to try it. G.G. LEAH STERN RESPONDS: Start with 2¾ cups of hot water, and check after 45 minutes of cooking to see if it needs more water, adding as necessary. An hour and fifteen minutes should be sufficient cooking time.

As he mulled over his fate, the chassid slowly began to realize how foolish he had been to rely on the wealthy man. I should have never depended on a human being! Hashem is the only One in Whom I can place my full trust. He must help me. The hard feelings in his heart began to dissipate as the chassid pondered these thoughts. Suddenly, the sound of hooves disrupted his reverie. He moved aside to allow the horse and carriage to pass, but to his surprise, the carriage stopped and the very same rich man he had seen only one hour earlier climbed out. With a large smile, the man stretched out his hand and gave the chassid a large pouch full of cash. “This should be enough for you to marry off your daughters,” he said. “I don’t understand!” the chassid said once again. “Just an hour ago, you refused to give me more than one coin, and now you’re running after me to give me all this money?! What made you change your mind?” “It’s simple,” the rich man replied. “When you arrived at my door, I felt that you were counting on the Rebbe’s letter and on my help. I decided to send you away empty-handed so you would turn your hopes to the One Who is truly helping you. By now, you probably had a chance to realize that it isn’t the letter and it isn’t my pocket — we are just shlichim!”

The chassid was crushed. Hadn’t the man read the Rebbe’s letter?

* * * * * This was what was behind Yaakov Avinu’s anger at Rochel, says the Ramban. Yaakov understood that Rochel was relying completely on his tefillos, and he knew that if such were the case, Rochel would not merit to be helped. She needed to reach out directly to Hakadosh Baruch Hu instead. Thus, Yaakov’s anger was not real anger. He displayed a temper simply to channel Rochel’s complaints properly. Indeed, as soon as Rochel realized that she could not depend solely on Yakov’s tefillos, she increased her own davening. Sure enough, her yeshuah came in the merit of her own tefillos, as the pasuk says: “Vayizkor Elokim es Rochel, vayishma eileha — Hashem remembered Rochel, and heeded her” (Bereishis 30:22). Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

During the fourteen years that Yaakov served Lavan as a shepherd, he spent much time alone in the fields. He had the chance to reflect and think of Hashem, and he composed many songs that would later become part of Sefer Tehillim. These perakim were ultimately forgotten and were written down once again by Dovid Hamelech.

The Boro Park View’s popular food contributor Leah Stern publishes her much-requested cookbook, which features hundreds of recipes that accentuate the home in homemade BY: Y. GRUNBAUM

It’s basic. It’s practical. It’s irresistible. Around the Kitchen Table isn’t your ordinary cookbook. In an era of gourmet cookbooks, this one stands out for its relatability and commitment to elevating the home kitchen to a wholesome level. The success of these recipes — and the guiding light during the years of writing this new cookbook — were that they utilize ingredients that are heimish and practical while bringing something original to the table (pun alert!). This impressive collection of nearly 400 recipes that home chefs of every level can imagine feeding themselves, their families and their guests is aptly titled Around the Kitchen Table. Mrs. Stern never expected this to become part of her professional profile. But the deluge of requests for more recipes that serve the needs of balabustas and not the authors themselves made this project a reality. Turns out that while good news doesn’t sell or make waves, good food definitely does.

In your view, why have your recipe ideas resonated so well with readers? Let’s be honest. People don’t want to run to the grocery every time they open a cookbook, or awkwardly search the supermarket aisles for ingredients they have never used or have difficulty pronouncing. This cookbook has, baruch Hashem, been able to develop a niche where the recipes are delicious and impressive while, for the most part, consisting of ingredients the standard chef has on hand and is already familiar with.

How did you come into the world of recipe development? I’ve always felt at home in the kitchen and enjoyed creating tasty and exciting dishes. I would frequently field reciperelated inquiries, but I never expected it to lead to this. When The View reached out to me to submit some recipes, I was happy

to try my hand at it but initially didn’t identify with it professionally. Baruch Hashem, the overwhelmingly positive feedback that the recipes generated and the requests for more soon led to this point.

Prior to preparing recipes for print, did you have your creations written down in clear recipe format, or would you just feel what was happening? Definitely the latter. And to be frank, it was a challenge at first to measure out everything precisely and present it in a way that would enable every reader to recreate it. It required standing with a pencil and pad in the kitchen while cooking — writing, changing amounts, editing, crossing out, adding ingredients, and oftentimes then starting from scratch!

Did you do anything different than the norm with the cookbook? I worked hard to create a cookbook that reflects everyday real life. It features a range from health food recipes, to presentable simcha creations, to ordinary “Tuesday in December” dinners. There are ideas for breakfast, for lunch and for supper. Some of the dishes are made in the oven, some on the George Foreman and some in the Crock-Pot. There are cakes that require whipping and whisking, and cakes that are mixed by hand — in one bowl. The cookbook also features recipes that are simple as well as more creative ones. To sum it up? If it happens in a heimish kitchen, it’s happening here.

Are there any sections that stand out as particularly notable? There are a few things worth mentioning. One is the section “Shabbos for Two,” which is perfect for young couples or others who are new to Shabbos cooking and can use a tutorial.

November 10, 2021

The Boro Park View

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

63

There is also a section of deliciously nourishing complete dinners that can be thrown into a Crock-Pot, pan or oven dish and left to do their thing so that a warm meal’s ready at dinnertime. A lot of time and effort was also put in so we could offer alternative baking solutions like gluten-free, spelt and the like that are tasty, healthy and presentable.

Are all the recipes of your own creation? There are a significant number of entries on which I worked hard to develop a recipe to serve a specific purpose or occasion. Some have been family favorites for years, and it would be hard to know what first inspired them. I should also note that the cookbook includes some recipes shared by my dear sisters and friends — wonderful chefs in their own right — and their support has been invaluable throughout this book’s production.

In leafing through the cookbook, one gets the sense that you’ve tried to simplify things and reduce them to short, concise instructions. Is that so? Short, no. Concise, yes. The instructions are simple to read and not overwhelming, but I would always rather add five extra words to come across more clearly. This is something that has worked well for me over the years. Just like too many cooks spoil the soup, too many details can overwhelm a good recipe, so you have to find that balance of explaining yourself but also being to the point.

Are you compromising a reader’s personal cooking style when you walk them through every step of a recipe like that? Not at all. Two summers ago, when some camps were struggling with stimulating activities due to COVID-19, a camp invited me to come bake with the girls. Despite my standing there giving direct instructions and guiding them stop by step; despite all girls using the same flour, oven, temperature, eggs and whatnot, no two girls had the same results. Everyone’s individuality shone through in their finished tray of cupcakes. The goal of this cookbook is to return some of that ease, joy and contentment that a woman should feel in the kitchen, but her personal signature is in the food.

Who is your ideal target audience for this project? Well, anyone with a place in the kitchen who appreciates delicious food! And cookbooks make a Chanukah gift item that every homemaker would be thrilled to receive. Women in our community have heavy responsibilities in the kitchen, such as feeding large families, celebrating yamim tovim, making simchas, ka”h, etc. It’s a lot to juggle, and most don’t rely on fast food regularly. My hope is that this book will be a go-to whenever they’re in need of a recipe, menu idea or other food inspiration. With almost 500 pages full of recipes and tips, Around the Kitchen Table will, b’ezras Hashem, fill each table with family food and every kitchen with the joy that comes along with it. CHAPTER 32 RECAP: Yechiel is forced to divulge that his father fears the danger awaiting Shabbesai Tzvi’s close people. Enraged, Shabbesai Tzvi orders Yankiv Tomashov to leave, and his henchmen roughly escort him out. A delegation from the gedolim in Poland arrive on the Isle of Abydos to determine whether there is truth in Shabbesai Tzvi’s claims to being Moshiach. Noyach steps out of the throng to greet them.

“G

ood afternoon, honored guests,” he said. “My name is Noyach. I’m from Warsaw.” “Good afternoon,” replied Rav Aryeh Leib with obvious delight. “It’s good to see someone from home. Have you been here long, young man?” “I’ve been in Turkey for half a year but here in Gallipoli for a few weeks.” “A few weeks!” exclaimed Rav Yeshaya. “That’s a long time. Perhaps you can tell us your impressions. It is important that we gather as much information as possible.” “I shall be glad to,” said Noyach. He lowered his voice. “Some people believe that he is an impostor, that he is very good at acting the part of Moshiach, but that it’s only an act. Tell me, did he show you his red garments and the red mantle on the Torah scroll?” “He did.” “Did he have a copy of Tzok Ha’itim

on the table?” “Yes. How did you know?” “Did he show you a vial of tears?” “Yes, he did. He also gave us a special garment for our father, which he said would bring him long life.” “Did he convince you that he is Moshiach?” “He was persuasive,” said Rav Aryeh Leib. “Just speaking for myself, it seems to me that he is convinced he’s Moshiach.” “I agree,” said Rav Yeshaya. “Of course, he may be delusional. He did have a somewhat manic look in his eyes. But on the other hand, he may be genuine. It’s hard to know with any measure of certainty.” “And what do you think about all of his transgressions?” Rav Yeshaya nodded gravely. “That is definitely troubling, but he defends his actions with Kabbalistic arguments. We’re not equipped to say that he is wrong. Who knows the truth? All we can say is that we hope he is genuinely Moshiach. Time will tell.”

“By the way,” said Rav Aryeh Leib, “how did you know about the red garments and the vial of tears?” Noyach glanced over his shoulder and saw two men leaning against a tree. “I can’t talk anymore right now,” he said. “The walls have ears. It’s dangerous to speak against Shabbesai Tzvi. I can’t be seen here talking to you any longer. I must go.” Noyach walked briskly toward the boat back to Gallipoli. Suddenly, he was seized by two pairs of powerful arms and dragged off the road. Mukian the Macedonian was waiting for him there. “You are Tomashov’s man, aren’t you?” demanded Mukian the Macedonian as he twisted Noyach’s arm behind his back. “Aren’t you?” Noyach gulped and nodded. “Listen to me carefully,” hissed Mukian the Macedonian. “We heard what you said to the Polish delegation. This is the last time you’ll do anything of this sort. Do you hear me?” He gave Noyach’s arm another sharp twist. Noyach yelped with pain. “Take a good look at these men,” said Mukian the Macedonian, pointing to his henchmen. “They will not hesitate to slit your throat if I tell them you’re an enemy of the Master. If you were not connected with Yechiel Hapolani, you would now be dead. Do you understand?”

Again, he twisted Noyach’s arm, and again, Noyach cried out in agony. The menace in Mukian the Macedonian’s voice and on the scowling faces of his henchmen chilled Noyach to the very marrow of his bones. Slowly, he nodded his head. “If you and your employer value your lives,” said Mukian the Macedonian, “you will never set foot on this island again. Never!” Neither Yankiv nor Noyach ever returned to the Isle of Abydos, but they remained in Gallipoli. Yankiv’s heart was full of despair. He sat on the veranda of his lodgings in the scorching summer heat and watched the traffic going back and forth between the peninsula and the fortress on the island. During this time, Yankiv and Noyach were astonished to see a group of Turkish dervishes arrive in Gallipoli to predict the fall of the Turkish Empire and the return of power to the Jews. These prophecies made a deep impression on the local Muslim population. They gathered at the shore and bowed down to the great Jewish king who lived on the island across the water. Rumors of conversions among the Christians of Europe arrived daily. Yankiv was told that the Inquisition had its hands full with Christians who acclaimed Shabbesai Tzvi as the Messiah and were willing to lay down their lives for their beliefs. As the month of Tammuz drew to a close, important tidings were sent forth from the Fortress of Power. Letters signed by Shabbesai Tzvi proclaiming the abolition of Tisha B’Av as a fast day were dispatched to all the Jewish communities of Turkey. Copies of the letter were rushed by courier to the communities of the Balkans, reaching Budapest before Tisha B’Av. “You shall make Tishah B’Av a day of feasting and rejoicing,” wrote the king, “with choice foods and delicious drinks, and with many candles and lights, melodies and songs, for it is the birthday of your king. You are to observe it as a full holiday, with your best clothes and the festival prayers. You shall also say a special Kiddush for Tishah B’Av, thanking the Almighty for this Festival of Consolations, the time of the birth of the anointed king, Shabbesai Tzvi.” Similar letters went out from Nattan Haazati in Gaza to the communities of North Africa and the Near East. For centuries, the Jewish people had fasted on Tisha B’Av. They had spent the darkest day of the Jewish calendar in the shuls, reading the tragic accounts in Megillas Eichah of the Roman atrocities against the people of Yerushalayim and lamenting the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. With heartrending cries, they had pleaded with the Almighty to have mercy on His downtrodden people and send Moshiach to bring them forth from the dark and interminable exile. That summer, however, nearly all the Jewish people of the sprawling Turkish Empire, and many points beyond, celebrated Tisha B’Av with feasting and rejoicing, in the belief that the long-awaited redemption had finally come. * * * * *

Nechemiah Kohein’s gray beard was long, brittle and narrow, and his gray hair stood out wildly around his sharp features and darting eyes. He clutched a knotted oaken staff in his right hand, and in spite of the oppressive heat, a heavy woolen cloak was draped about his shoulders. His eyes held the look of an angry prophet from ancient times. “Where are you from, young man?” asked Nechemiah Kohein. “Warsaw,” said Yechiel. “Warsaw! I’ve been there many times. that a young man from Warsaw should be among Shabbesai Tzvi’s men.” He leaned forward and spoke in a loud whisper. “Take my advice, young man from Warsaw. Go home!” Yechiel turned red and looked away. “You have not met the Master,” he stammered. “He is in a period of illumination. He will undoubtedly convince you otherwise.” “Hm!” said Nechemiah Kohein and remained silent for the rest of the way. Shmuel Primo was waiting for the visitor on the pier. The two men shook hands and walked together to the fortress. Shabbesai Tzvi was seated at his solid silver table when Nechemiah Kohein entered the room. Avraham Yechini stood nearby, and Shmuel Primo went to stand beside him. Shabbesai Tzvi did not rise, but he extended his golden scepter in a gesture of royal grace. “Welcome, honored friend,” he said. “Blessed are you at your arrival and blessed shall you be at your departure. Please sit down.” Nechemiah remained standing in the middle of the room, his back stiff, his hand high on his oaken staff. “I have journeyed many days and nights to come here,” he said, “to see if your powers are indeed greater than mine.” “My powers are as wide as the sky and as deep as the sea,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “They are the powers of the Almighty’s anointed king.” “Why should I accept this?” demanded Nechemiah. “Because the truth lights up its own path, Nechemiah,” said Shabbesai Tzvi with a smile. “If you are indeed as great a Kabbalist as you are reputed to be, you will know it is true.” “I am as great a Kabbalist as you have ever seen,” bridled Nechemiah, drawing himself up to his full height and pounding his staff on the floor. “The words of the Zohar and the writings of the Arizal are etched into my heart. I have heard your claims and interpretations of the Kabbalah. They cannot be proven.” “Look around you, and you will see your proof,” said Shabbesai Tzvi indicating his opulent surroundings with a sweep on his hand. “I am a prisoner of the sultan, yet I live as a king in a palace. If I were to walk out, no one would dare stand in

my way.” “I am not impressed by your riches,” snapped Nechemiah. “Nor by the favor you have found with the infidel.” Avraham Yechini started angrily at the insolent words, but Shabbesai Tzvi’s raised hand stopped him. “Nechemiah, I will forgive your remarks, because you are surely weary from your journey,” said Shabbesai Tzvi with a sharp edge in his voice. “We shall speak again tomorrow when you are in better humor.” In the morning, however, things were not much different.

They debated bitterly all day, Nechemiah Kohein interpreting the mystical words in their most basic sense and Shabbesai Tzvi reading hidden meanings and broad allegory into everything. Nechemiah Kohein had come prepared to dispute all of Shabbesai Tzvi’s teachings and force him to provide proof for each of them. They debated bitterly all day, Nechemiah Kohein interpreting the mystical words in their most basic sense and Shabbesai Tzvi reading hidden meanings and broad allegory into everything. A mound of open seforim on the table grew higher over the course of the day. By midnight, it became obvious that the matter could not be resolved in a single day, and it was decided the discussion be suspended until the next day. The discussion resumed by midmorning as if there had been no interruption, Shabbesai Tzvi revealing mysteries to prove his teachings and Nechemiah Kohein dismissing them as fanciful and unfounded. The line of visitors waiting for their king grew longer, but Shabbesai Tzvi refused to see them. He had become obsessed with the Kabbalistic dispute. By midafternoon, however, it was evident that neither would convince the other. A deep animosity between the two men also became apparent. Nechemiah Kohein looked at Shabbesai Tzvi with undisguised animosity in his eyes, and Shabbesai Tzvi grew sullen and resentful under the other’s constant badgering. “There is no point in continuing,” said Shabbesai Tzvi as he snapped shut the sefer in his hands. “We’ve argued long enough. I demand you accept me on faith.” “Never! I will not accept you unless you show me a miracle.” “You will accept me without a miracle. And that will be your miracle!” “It would indeed be a miracle if I did as you said.” “But I am the king of the Jewish people, Nechemiah. Only a few unheeded voices speak against me. Even you have nothing against me but your opinions; you cannot prove my teachings wrong. Don’t be arrogant. Accept me!” To be continued…

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to Become NYC’s 110th Mayor Walking away with a significant victory, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams handily defeated Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa and will be succeeding Mayor Bill de Blasio on January 1. The 61-year-old Adams, a former NYPD police captain and a graduate of New York City’s public schools, had little trouble taking the election. In the weeks before Election Day, Sliwa attempted to portray Adams as an elitist who had little understanding of life on the streets, while Adams declined to engage with Sliwa, dismissing his statements as disrespectful and pointing to false kidnapping claims made by Sliwa to cast aspersions on his honesty. Adams ran on a platform of increasing public safety while focusing on the needs of working class residents, and was the heavy favorite in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a significant margin. According to Hamodia, Adams has said that New York City’s economic recovery hinges on lowering crime rates, and he has advocated for both police reforms and more aggressive policing. In the hours following the election, Adams vowed to be a hands-on mayor. “I’m not going to be a philosophical mayor,” said Adams. “I’m going to be … a GSD mayor. Get stuff done.” Mayor Bill de Blasio, who could not run for reelection because he was term-limited, praised Adams as a brave voice for justice and a bold public servant, reported ABC 7. “I think he’s going to be an exceptional mayor,” said de Blasio. “I look forward to helping and supporting in any way over these next weeks as he gets ready.”

Incentives Abound as COVID-19 Vaccine Approved for Fiveto Eleven-Year-Olds While some parents are heaving sighs of relief now that the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control have both approved a lower-dose COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages five to eleven, others aren’t excited about the prospect of having their kids roll up their sleeves and get jabbed anytime soon, if at all. CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky noted that while children are at lower risk for severe disease and death than adults, COVID-19 has created significant mental

health, social and educational risks for the nation’s 28 million five- to eleven-year-olds. The Associated Press reported that Walensky encouraged parents to speak to trusted health professionals or pharmacists to learn more about the vaccine and its role in protecting kids against COVID-19 and its associated fallout. “There are children in the second grade who have never experienced a normal school year,” said Walensky. “Pediatric vaccination has the power to help us change that.” President Joe Biden hailed the latest turn of events in the war on COVID-19 as a turning point, one that will give parents peace of mind and will limit the number of infections spread by children to adults and their peers. “It is a major step forward for our nation in our fight to defeat the virus,” said Biden. Millions of doses of Pfizer’s vaccine for this age group have been shipped to doctors’ offices and pharmacies, their orange caps intended to prevent accidentally administering the larger adult dose to children. Like the adult version, the children’s vaccine is intended to be administered in two separate doses, given three weeks apart. Numerous incentives have been launched in an effort to boost child vaccination. New York City is offering $100 or tickets to local attractions to kids who get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at a city-run vaccination site. In Chicago, public schools closed on November 12 so that kids could be vaccinated, with $100 gift cards offered to those who get their shots at Chicago Public Health events or clinics, reported CNN. In San Antonio, Texas, $100 H-E-B grocery cards are being offered as incentives, while Minnesota is dangling $200 Visa gift cards and tickets to a statewide raffle to spur vaccinations. While some parents are taking a wait-and-see approach to the vaccination effort, others have no interest in the shot at all. But according to The Journal News, a bill floating around in the state legislature might add COVID-19 to the list of required vaccines for schoolchildren. “I believe that it’s important, just like it’s important for kids to be vaccinated against measles and other diseases, that children are vaccinated against COVID-19,” said Bronx Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who sponsored the legislation in the Assembly. “Anybody who doesn’t take that seriously is just living on another planet.” The state legislature does not meet again until January, but Orange County Assemblyman Colin Schmidt has already made it clear that he will oppose the vaccination bill. “This is a health care decision that should be made by parents and their family doctor,” said Schmidt. “Albany politicians should not have the ability to interfere in that process.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE RECAP: Mr.

Shikovitzer shows Zelig’s note to Binyamin, who wonders what kind of help Zelig was expecting from him. The British soldiers, suspecting involvement on Binyamin’s part, arrest him.

B

inyamin sat in the little room, not knowing what was in store for him. He had not been assigned a prison uniform when he entered, though he’d heard from others that it was standard protocol. He’d been escorted down a long corridor, steep stone stairs, and here he was, in his own clothes. If he was not mistaken, at least two hours had passed since he’d been brought here. There was one narrow window in the room, and Binyamin rose toward it. He looked out at an empty pit between the high walls, filled with thorny summer flowers. A cool sea breeze whistled between the tall stone walls and reached him, cooling his sweaty forehead. He was still thirsty. And he still had no idea what was going to happen to him. But he tried to focus on the fact that, despite it all, it was not the British who would render his fate, nor would it be the Jewish policeman who had displayed a modicum of empathy. It was not even his own father, who was certainly scrambling about right now, trying to exercise his connections to make it clear to the British that this entire arrest was one big mistake. There was only one Decider. Binyamin took a deep breath of air and returned to his bench. Two minutes later, the door opened, and a person with a burgundy beret appeared. “Come,” he said in English. Binyamin knew what the word meant, but the Brit was not addressing him; there was someone behind him, outside the room. A figure entered the room, and Binyamin

raised his eyes. Here it was, the famous prisoners’ uniform. And the face belonged to… no, it was not Zelig, but he knew this boy as well. His family had come just two years ago from Europe, and they worked mining coarse sand from the beachfront. A year ago, Zelig’s father had purchased sand for the renovation of his workshop, and if Binyamin remembered correctly, this young man had delivered it. The Brit asked the bareheaded boy something in English, and the latter looked at Binyamin and shook his head from side to side. Binyamin returned a steady gaze, wondering if he would also be asked if they had any connection or if they knew each other. But the Brit did not even turn to him; he just pushed the boy out of the room, and someone else entered. Three more times, one after another, Jewish prisoners were led into the room, and three times, their answers were in the negative. Zelig was not one of them. ***** “Binyamin!” Mahmoud clapped his hands loudly in the middle of the street. “Is that you, Binyamin? That’s it, just one day in prison? What did they do there to you that you are so pale?” “Nothing.” Binyamin tried to smile. “It just wasn’t pleasant.” And I didn’t eat anything besides a few carrots. “Sure, sure.” The Arab was friendly. “And why don’t you come to Itzchak a bit, to help him with his work? Now that Zelig isn’t here, he’s so alone…” “I understand,” Binyamin said, his eyes lowered. “But I’m going back to my yeshivah today, in Chevron. Tell him that I’m praying for him, okay?” “Won’t you come?” “I think that if I come again, the Brits will be sure that Zelig is guilty, and that I’m guilty, and that Mr. Shikovitzer is guilty.” “Right, right. It’s better that you shouldn’t come. It’s enough that you were in prison already. Who else is there?” the Arab asked curiously.

“All kinds of people.” “Arabs, Jews?” “Arabs, Jews.” “And Zelig? He’s not there?” “I don’t think so. I didn’t see him.” “So where is he?” the Arab asked. “I don’t know.” Binyamin shook his head. “He ran away and is probably hiding.” “He’s not hiding, no way! They caught him, poor boy!” “They caught him?!” “Yes. This morning, he suddenly came to the workshop. He said he was hungry and that he was leaving Acco to go somewhere else so that they shouldn’t

“He’s not hiding, no way! They caught him, poor boy!” look for him. Itzchak was so happy, and he wanted to bring him food. But before he managed to get the knife for the bread, the soldiers came.” “And they took him?” “They took him. Itzchak asked the soldiers lots of questions, but they didn’t answer him. They just put Zelig in the wagon and left. If they didn’t take him to the jail here, then where did they take him?” “I don’t know.” Binyamin bit his bottom lip. Oy, Zelig. “I didn’t see him at all. Maybe he came just after I left. They sent me out early this morning, at nine. When did they come to arrest him?” “I don’t remember what time it was — sometime mid-morning, you know, when the sun is strong. Maybe eleven or twelve? Maybe he will also be released as fast as you were. Why did they let you out in the end?” “They realized that I have nothing to do with this whole story, and that I wasn’t even in Acco in recent weeks at all.” “Good, good,” the Arab said. “So I’ll tell Itzchak that you are out, and he will be happy. He was sad that you were taken in because of his Zelig, you know.”

Two years later Yerushalayim, 5689 “Binyamin!” Yitzchak Shikovitzer caught the young man walking in the street by the shoulder. “Binyamin, is that you?” The boy raised his eyes. “It’s me,” he said, and fell silent. “How are you? You don’t know how worried I was when we heard what happened in Chevron… The riots in Acco were child’s play compared to what you had…” Binyamin nodded slowly. “It’s a miracle I met your father, and he told me…” Zelig’s father sighed. “He told me that, baruch Hashem, nothing happened to you.” “Yes. Baruch Hashem.” They stood in silence, thinking of the others who hadn’t been as fortunate. “Do you know,” Shikovitzer said, his eyes fiery, “how much I’d be ready to give for my Zelig to be among your holy friends, there in Chevron? Do you have any idea, or can you not possibly understand me and think that I’m a father who doesn’t —” “Of course I understand you,” Binyamin cut him off. “Life in This World, compared to eternal life in the Next World… what’s the question?” “Now I’m not even near my Zelig.” Shikovitzer sighed again. “If I was, I could go visit him in prison, and maybe I could influence him a little to come back, to think. But when we can’t even think about going back to Acco… There are only a few Jews left there, you know — the ones who refused to leave in the great evacuation. The British said they’re not taking responsibility for them, and I hope that nothing happens to any of them. So far we haven’t heard about any unusual incidents… Hashem should continue to protect them.” “And the Jewish prisoners… are they protected there?” “I hope so,” Shikovitzer said darkly. “You know, it’s not like two years ago, when you were there for two days. How many Jews were there then? Ten? A few

more? Now there are nearly a hundred; the British send a lot of people there.” “Yes…” Binyamin nodded slowly. “After the terrible riots, the British cleared us all out from Acco. Since then, the Acco Prison is the best place for Jewish prisoners, in their view, in order to prevent any thoughts of escape. The Arab population in the city will not take kindly to Jewish escapees…” “But during the riots there, quite a few Arabs actually helped the Jews.” Binyamin leaned on the tree next to him. “The Arab fisherman whom my father worked with protected him and two others on that dreadful Friday. And my mother and the children went into an Arab neighbor’s home and waited there.” “You’re telling me?” Yitzchak Shikovitzer’s smile was bitter. “Did you forget Mahmoud?” “What happened with Mahmoud?” “I hid in the workshop, behind the oven; he locked the door from the outside. When the Arab rioters came, he told them he had banished me from the property, and that everything now belongs to him. Baruch Hashem, they believed him and left.” “Baruch Hashem. And the shul?” “They broke into it from the window, but they hardly did anything. The Sefer Torah was with me in the workshop.” A thin but genuine smile lit up his eyes. “They wanted to set the house on fire, but the Arab owner came and screamed at them not to dare. It was his property, and he called the police. They came and banished the rioters pretty fast.” “Halevai it should have happened that way in Chevron.” Binyamin’s lips hardly moved when he spoke. Again they were both silent. “What will be now?” Zelig’s father murmured as he looked at the brown leaves above them. They were still in the dry, searing heat. “Looks like Mahmoud was right about what he said — either way, I’m gone already, and my workplace belongs to him…” “The house where you lived, with the shul, was not yours. But the workshop area was, right?” “Right. I bought it at full price. Though what does that help me now? Oy, we just have to thank Hashem that our lives were spared; it wouldn’t have taken much for Acco’s riots to finish in a bad way, chalilah.” He suddenly looked straight into Binyamin’s eyes. “Not too many people knew, like you, about my dream all these years, that when the time would come and our community would grow, I would take the lot of the workshop and build a big, beautiful shul on it.” He shook his head. “In the last two years, these thoughts don’t leave me for a minute. I don’t know if I will have any descendants to learn for my soul after my passing. Based on the situation right now, it does not appear that there will be. So I want to have the zechus of building a mikdash me’at, so that I should have at least some merits…” “I hope Zelig will yet come back,” Binyamin said softly. “Amen. Halevai,” Mr. Shikovtzer said, but there was a faraway look in his eye, as though he did not believe what he was saying. To be continued…

I

am a school librarian. I may not currently be employed as such, but that’s irrelevant; being a librarian is an intrinsic part of who I am, as much a part of my identity as being a mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. This year was to be my seventh year as an elementary and middle school librarian. Was to be, because sadly, due to post-COVID-19 asthma exacerbation, my lungs are currently unable to tolerate the dust that has accumulated in the roughly 20,000 books in my library, many of them priceless golden oldies. I write this just days after I was forced to resign from this very beloved role, and while bittersweet, it seems as good an opportunity as any to celebrate the victories of my tenure as a librarian. And there were so many. Join me on a tour of my awesome library. You start feeling that special library ambience as you walk down the hallway. Breathe in deeply through your nose. Do you smell it, that inimitable library smell? It smells like crisp new pages and old yellowing paper, layered with ink and the unique bouquet of book mustiness. Ah, heaven! Here we are. Welcome to my magical kingdom. Go ahead, look around, take it all in. Books and books and more books. So many books, in every color, in every genre. There are more titles and more authors than you ever dreamed was possible! And it’s all at your fingertips, displayed in a way that lets you easily find your level and your favorite series, authors and genres. Do you go for poetry? There’s the bookcase you need! How about biographies? Yup, we’ve got a dedicated section for those, too! What else can I help you find? Nonfiction? Mystery? Fantasy? Historical fiction? Science fiction? Graphic novels? Realistic fiction? Short stories? Memoirs? Fables and folktales? Funny books? Scary books? Research texts? We’ve got them all, and then some! Oh, I hope you’ve gotten to experience the magic of a well-told story, or a journey into the past or future to wondrous and unexpected places! Books are the story of hu-

mans, all humans, from the beginning of time until its end, and as a reader or writer or listener, you are a part of that story. When you grow engrossed in reading a great book, you become a part of history, a part of the chain of knowledge that connects us all. Everything that makes you special, that makes you you, becomes part of that communal story, making it so much better for all of us. When you join our community of readers, nobody cares what you look like, where you come from, or what your personal experiences or challenges are. You are simply welcomed into the family, no questions asked and no strings attached. We are readers, tellers of tales, each listening and understanding in our own unique way — and that is as it should be. Did you ever wonder how much work goes into running and maintaining this magical kingdom? No, there aren’t any little elves running around at night getting everything spick and span and ready for a new crowd of visitors the next day. Magic is never as easy as it looks! Because it isn’t quite magic. Oh, the reading part totally is, but the work part? Not so much. There is always so much work for a librarian to do, but never enough time. Books need to be researched, ordered and put into circulation. Sometimes they need some gentle censoring to make sure they meet our stringent hashkafic standards. The stacks (bookshelves) need to be kept in perfect order. Lost books need to be found, delinquent books chased down, and damaged books repaired. Books that have been loved to death need to be taken out of circulation, always a heartbreaking task for a librarian. If they are still in print, they need to be reordered. Sometimes that is more complicated than

you would think. For one beloved favorite that I desperately wanted to replace, I contacted Judaica stores throughout the United States, finally locating one copy in a store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We have an annual book fair, which is a huge undertaking, with the profits going to enlarge our Judaica section, making sure we have every new book stocked. As a librarian, I have to be up to the minute regarding which new books have been published, know when beloved series have new additions, and keep up with current reading trends. As a school librarian, I have to speak to and listen to students, help them find what they love, and if I don’t have it, make sure to get it. I collect book wish lists from students, take the time to check if they are appropriate for our library, and if they are, order them. We have books for students who like sports, or crafting, or gardening, or cooking and baking, or drawing. I work with teachers to find out what units they are covering in class, and make sure to have a selection of books on that topic on display when that class visits the library. Before every yom tov, I put books about that yom tov on display, as well as connected texts. For example, before Rosh Hashanah, along with the books you’d expect, you will find books about how honey is made, as well as books about rams, different animal horns or apple trees. My favorite part of being a librarian is when students come to visit the library. That’s when the magic really happens! I get to read some of my favorite books to the classes,

using special voices and the works! I talk to students about their favorites, and help every girl find her own special something. I’ve seen girls who thought they didn’t like reading get so engrossed in reading or discussing a book that they’re surprised when their library period is over. Time really does fly when you’re having fun! I’ve had so many girls who want to share their own stories, often writing them down for me so I can read them when I don’t have twenty-plus youngsters clamoring for my attention. We each have a writer inside of us, because we each have a story to tell. When we get into poetry, I see girls walking around with notebooks, jotting down verses as they come to mind. I’ve seen many of those poems, and they are just beautiful. They sometimes move me to tears. I have many recess regulars, girls who finish their books in one day and come back during recess to return them and check out more. Many regulars come just to say hi, to tell me where they are up to in their books and to discuss their

Some girls come to read, spending their recess engrossed in books. Teachers are regulars too, though they usually come before class starts or after dismissal. Who better to introduce you to the wonders of literature than teachers who love reading? The library is a totally happening place, one where everyone is welcomed and feels welcome — and it shows! I love the positive energy. The more readers I have, the happier I am!

This is for the students at the school where I have been blessed to be a librarian: You may think that I was the one helping you, but I can honestly say that I got more than I gave. You have all taught me so much just by being your incredible curious, vivacious, honest, intelligent, caring and passionate selves. You all have brought so much light to my life, giving me reasons to smile so many times each day. Not being able to be your librarian right now breaks my heart, but knowing how incredible you all are definitely makes me feel better! Like Dumbo with his feather, you don’t really need me to make the magic happen; it’s already inside you and always was.

As winter begins to make itself felt and the kids spend more of their time indoors, reading is one great way to create happy hours and happy memories. Curled up snug on the couch, your child can travel the world and meet fascinating characters through the pleasurable pages of old favorites and new releases. Here we speak to five of the Jewish world’s most iconic children’s authors, who share the stories behind those timeless tales.

Yaffa Ganz Yaffa is the author behind time-tested favorites like the Savta Simcha series, Mimmy and Simmy, The Little Old Lady Who Couldn’t Fall Asleep, and Tali’s Slippers, Tova’s Shoes. Over the past 40 years, Yaffa Ganz has published forty juvenile titles, three books of essays, and many hundreds of articles in media around the world in addition to Wheat, Wine and Honey — a Book of Poetry. The Ganzes live in Eretz Yisroel.

How did you realize that you were an author, and that writing children’s books was your niche? It’s a funny thing, but I never intended to be a children’s author. Of course, I always talked a lot (ask my former teachers!), but write? The first thing I ever wrote was a letter to a Chicago newspaper when I was in fifth grade. It was a school assignment, and when it was printed in the newspaper, I

felt very accomplished. The second item was a birthday poem I wrote for my mother when I was about ten. We found it among her papers after her death. When we moved to Eretz Yisroel some 60 years ago, I wrote an untold number of passionate articles about Eretz Yisroel.

At what stage did you write your first children’s book? My first book was Savta Simcha and the Incredible Shabbos Bag. By the time I wrote it, I was a mommy of five, and my own mother had passed away.

Were the characters in any of your books inspired by real people? Much of Savta Simcha’s personality, especially in Savta Simcha and the Incredible Shabbos Bag, was inspired by my mother and my beloved bubby. Both were remarkable women.

What was your favorite book when you were a child? I read insatiably as a kid, but a favorite was What the Moon Brought by Sadie Rose Weilerstein (long out of print. She wrote the famous K’ton Ton series). At the time, this was just about the only Jewish kids’ book around — and I read my copy to pieces. It was the story of twin sisters in the 1940s and 1950s and how they celebrated each of the yomim tovim in a vastly different Jewish America. It was absolutely delightful. To this day, every Purim I can see them bringing a tray of mishloach manos to their neighbors and their dolls dressed up as the characters in the Megillah.

Of all the characters you’ve created, do you have any favorites? In addition to Savta Simcha and Mimmy and Simmy, my own favorite characters are Dr. Emanuel J. Mitzva and the siblings Jeremy and Heddy Levi. I wasn’t surprised that Savta Simcha became such a success (she’s special!), but I thought that Dr. Mitzva and Jeremy would become household names as well. Yet things turned out differently. Everyone knows Savta Simcha as well as Mimmy and Simmy, yet lots of readers are still not familiar with Dr. Mitzva and his unusual feats in Cedarville City. Or Jeremy and Heddy and their questionably ingenious projects in Kerem HaTorah. The queen in my kingdom remains Savta Simcha (I call her my Eretz Yisroel neshamah), but it’s definitely worth getting to know Dr. Mitzva and the Levis!

What comes first, the story or the message? I don’t try to teach any messages. Our kids learn enough in school! I want to provide creative, enjoyable, kosher fun without adding yet another message to their list of Things to Do and Be. Children need some kosher but free “dreaming space.” Without it, they often close their ears and their hearts to our other messages. Some of the most gratifying feedback I’ve received over the years has been that Savta Simcha was a reader’s first introduction to Yiddishkeit or their first step toward moving to Eretz Yisroel. Never underestimate the power of the written word! So here’s hoping that, b’ezras Hashem, this author will still bring a bit of laughter, creativity and joy to both her readers and her Father in Heaven.

Dina Rosenfeld Dina (Devorah Leah) Rosenfeld has served as editor-in-chief and creative director of the award-winning Hachai Publishing House for over 25 years. As an author, she has written over 20 children’s books of her own. They include the classic The Very Best Place for a Penny, the beloved Labels for Laibel, and Five Alive, an AJL notable book. Her most recent title about the important topic of inclusion, We Can Find a Way, was released in the fall of 2018. Mrs. Rosenfeld lives with her husband and children in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, where she is active in chinuch and community projects.

How did you realize that writing children’s books was your niche? Well, as a writer, I don’t like to limit myself; I’ve written poetry, diary entries, speeches, stories, articles, song lyrics and published essays for adults. But creating children’s books about Torah topics, mitzvos and middos is definitely a labor of love. It all began in the preschool classroom, when as a nineteen-year-old teacher, I made up a story for my three-yearold students. My mother, a”h, encouraged me to turn it into a picture book, and that was the beginning of my journey.

Why are picture books so powerful? The power of the best picture books is their ability to distill big, important ideas into a pure form for the very young. When the writing and the illustrations blend seamlessly, they are greater than the sum of their parts. Creating frum classics became my passion.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received? When my neighbor told me that he was having trouble putting up his sukkah, and his little daughter looked up at him and quoted, “Tatty —

you’ll only succeed if you’re willing to try!” For me, the ultimate compliment is when children and their parents actually integrate words from beloved books into their lives.

Which comes first, the story or the message? Some books begin with the message, like Labels for Laibel. As a mom of young children, it was easy to identify sharing as their greatest challenge. I began thinking about an interesting twist on sharing, created two characters to bring the story to life, and wrote the first half of the book in four hours. (When my kids were asleep, of course.) The next day, I called my mother and my brother. I read it to them and asked for suggestions about what kind of ending to write. They each had a suggestion, but I came up with something entirely different that night. It took a total of eight hours, required very little editing, and felt as if it almost wrote itself. In contrast, Hot on the Trail began as a plot. I thought it would be fun to play with the idea of a story in which each part of an adventure led to the next, and the last would bring the action full circle. I tried

to write this story about two girls, but it refused to cooperate. That draft went into a drawer, and after Labels for Laibel was published, I revisited the plot as a vehicle for my lively fictional brothers.

What has changed about writing children’s books since you started out, and what has stayed the same? The most dramatic change is that there are so many wonderful books about Shabbos, about mitzvos, about yomim tovim. It’s more difficult to interest a publisher in a topic they’ve already addressed, so a children’s author today would do well to research what’s already out there before submitting a manuscript. When I started out, back in the 1980s, there were almost no preschool picture books appropriate for twoand three-year-olds. I remember simplifying the text of Jewish books as I read them to my class, and going to the public library to find picture books on their level. Almost all Jewish children’s books had too many words and ideas, some were not full color, and most were soft-cover products that kids quickly destroyed. Today, the explosion of beautiful children’s material for frum readers is beautiful to see. It is now possible to enjoy high-quality picture books that are exclusively Torah-based, al taharas hakodesh. What will never change is that really good picture book text — whether touching or humorous, in rhyme or in prose — requires a certain lyrical quality that makes it a joy to read aloud. The partnership between the reader and the child makes the experience an opportunity for bonding, for deep discussions, for exploration beyond the book. Those who read to children regularly tell me that it is their favorite activity, a moving and powerful part of the relationship.

Which of your books is your favorite? I have a different relationship with each one... It’s impossible to choose. They’re all my babies!

Libby Lazewnik At this point, Libby is as well known for her adult novels, including The Judge, The Quest, Fool’s Gold, and Give Me the Moon, as she is for children’s books. But her weekly Yated stories for kids and her young adult novels were her initial claim to fame. Libby is a freelance writer, editor and translator who lives in Baltimore.

At what stage did you write your first children’s book? I was a mother of three small children, living in Eretz Yisroel, and had come to New York to attend my younger sister’s wedding. One day, I was chatting with my middle sister and mentioned that I hoped to write a book for children someday. I had the plot and characters all worked out, I told her. Someday… My sister looked at me and asked, “What are you waiting for?” Suddenly, I realized that if I procrastinated, I might end up waiting forever. The time to do something about my dream was right now. As soon as I returned home, I set to work writing the book I’d dreamed up. It was called Shira’s Summer. Baruch Hashem, it was accepted for publication just one day after I handed it in. What a thrill! Later, I added two sequels, Shira’s New Start and Absolutely Shira, which together form a trilogy that is still being sold in Jewish bookstores today.

Were the characters in any of your books inspired by real people? When I was growing up, my mother used to tell us stories from when she was a little girl during the Holocaust. One of those stories, about a friend of hers, touched my imagination. When I grew up, I wrote a book called The Search for Miri, based

on that girl’s experience of the war. Most of the book is pure fiction, but the main character, Miri — and some of what she went through — is based on my mother’s real-life friend.

Can you tell us about an experience that inspired you to write a book? Years ago, when I had already written a number of children’s books, I worked for a publishing house that had just released a popular novel for adults. One day we were discussing the novel, which I found fault with in some way, and a coworker challenged me to write a book for adults the way I thought it should be done. And I accepted the challenge! I got to work on what became my first full-length book for adults (525 pages!). It was a sequel to The Search for Miri and takes place 30 years later. The book was called Between the Thorns and was very well received, baruch Hashem.

What comes first, the story or the message? I nearly always start with a message and build the story around it. I ask myself, “What do I want to bring out in this story?” and then I wonder, “What kind of plot would best bring it out?” I think that an actionpacked story without a strong message behind it ends up being just that: a bunch of actions. The storyline gives the

message a vehicle, just the way a person might ride a horse (or car!) to get from here to there. But readers want more than just action. They like to think and to feel. They want to end the story feeling richer and wiser. So the message that drives the action is, in my opinion, just as or even more important than the plot that carries it.

What was the most difficult book to write? Between the Thorns. That’s because it was such a long book, with so many characters, and a story that spans five whole years in their lives. Planning the story took almost as much time as writing it! (I’m kidding, but not stretching the facts by much…) Also, it was my first full-length adult novel, and anything new is always more difficult to do.

A children’s book should always have… An exciting story. No matter how good your message is, or your characters are, without a strong plot the book will go nowhere. A good storyline is absolutely essential.

It should never have… Preaching. No one likes to be told what to think or how to feel. Ideas and emotions should come through the story, not through a lecture. If you do have to spell things out, make sure to use a light hand, and keep it short!

What has changed about writing children’s books since you started out, and what has stayed the same? An interesting question. Books in general are different today. People have a shorter attention span, which means that

130

The Boro Park View

November 10, 2021

writers can no longer use long, dense sentences or paragraphs. You have to move things along quickly: descriptions, action and dialogue. Otherwise, people lose interest, and your wonderful story won’t get read! The main elements of a great story, however, have stayed the same: interesting characters who grow through the things that happen to them and the decisions they make, a lively plot line with secrets and surprises, true-to-life feelings, and a message that hits home.

Which of your books is your favorite? Just as a parent loves all her children equally, it’s hard to choose one and call it my favorite. But there are two that have a special place in my heart. The first is Shira’s Summer, which is special to me because it was the very first book I ever wrote. Another favorite is Forever and a Day, simply because I love the characters and the story.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received? Naturally, I love when people tell me how much they enjoyed my book or how they missed their Shabbos nap because they couldn’t put it down. But my absolute favorite feedback is the kind where people say my stories helped them or changed something in their life. Once, a friend of mine came back from paying a shivah call to a family that had just lost a child in a terrible accident. She told me that the parents had told their children a story of mine that gave them a lot of comfort. A different girl once told me that my story comforted her when she lost her sister, and another girl shared that, when her class was consumed with cliques and rivalries, a story of mine gave them the idea that helped them become one, big, peaceful class again. That kind of feedback keeps me going!

Bracha Goetz Bracha is the author of 40 books for Jewish children, some whimsical, some thought-provoking, but all with that upbeat tone that helps kids appreciate the wonder of life in this world. She is based in Beitar and Baltimore.

How did you realize that writing children’s books was your niche? One day, when I was sitting outside watching my young children play in the Judean Hills, I brought along a notebook and began writing a children’s story. I had no computer or even typewriter back then, so I just put the handwritten pages in an envelope and mailed it to a publisher in the States. A few weeks later, I got a letter of acceptance — and that’s when I realized that I could write children’s books! It was a natural niche for me because I love to take deep concepts and explain them in simple and joyful ways to children. Using little words, and as few lines as possible to express big ideas, is a great pleasure for me.

What comes first, the story or the message? Messages are the essence of my books. I write books when I feel there are vital messages our children need to hear. Then I just work to figure out how to present them in a cheerful way so they can be absorbed most easily.

Can you tell us about an experience that inspired you to write a book? When one of my granddaughters was born with severe spina bifida, friends were certain that I was soon going to write a children’s book about special needs. I

wanted to, but I didn’t feel that I had the expertise to write it. Then I read about wonderful workshops that a great educator, Mrs. Yael Zelinger, was giving in schools. The workshops taught how to interact more effectively and inclusively with children who have disabilities. I asked her if I could incorporate some of her workshops into a picture book, and she was delighted to have that happen. That’s how Let’s Appreciate Everyone came to be — a book that helps children become more knowledgeable, sensitive and appreciative of people with special needs.

What has changed about writing children’s books since you started out, and what has stayed the same? There are so many more books available now for heimish children than when I started writing, baruch Hashem! Our publishing industry has blossomed, and in addition, some people are self-publishing books. Picture books are still very popular in our communities, the way they always were, thanks to Shabbos and because parents love the cozy feeling of reading a nurturing picture book with their little ones.

What was your favorite book when you were a child? As a kid, my favorite book

was Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire. For years I thought this book was written by Dr. Seuss because it seemed so much like his wonderful style, yet when I found the book again, I saw that Dr. Seuss had edited the book but was not the author. When I was a little older, my favorite book was The Diary of Anne Frank. This book inspired me to start my own diary, and excerpts from that were eventually incorporated into the one adult book I wrote, a memoir about my journey to becoming Torah observant. That book also instilled within me a deep desire to learn more about my Jewish heritage.

What should a children’s book always have? It should always provide a child with a sense of joy about life.

What should it never have? Anything that will engender feelings of fear in children.

Is there a quote from a children’s book that found its way into your heart? Dr. Seuss wrote in Oh, the Places You’ll Go: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” I think that this kind of encouragement helped me to become a baalas teshuvah. Recognizing that I could choose a a path very different from the one I had been raised helped me to actually use the brains in my head to seek out the Torah’s direction.

What was the most difficult book to write? I don’t find it difficult to write children’s books, and I think that’s because I still have many childlike qualities. I am able to get inside the head of a child, since the same sense of wonder and curiosity about the world is going on in my head, too!

Which of your books have sold the most copies? Probably my Let’s Stay Safe book and the various board books for toddlers in the What Do You See? series.

Which of your books is your favorite? The favorites from my own books would be my newest book, Let’s Stay Healthy, and Hashem’s Candy Store. We benefit greatly from helping our children learn early on how to truly enjoy fulfilling the mitzvah of v’nishmartem me’od l’nafshoseichem — taking very good care of their health.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received? When people contact me to let me know that my Let’s Stay Safe or my Talking About Personal Privacy books have helped to protect their children and saved their lives, that is the best feedback I could receive.

Pessie Frankel and Yocheved Leah Perkal After they’d tasted the first volume of Mrs. Honig’s Cakes, readers wanted a second helping, and a third, fourth and fifth. This talented duo of good friends and once-upon classmates are now working on the ninth volume of their delicious stories. Yocheved Leah Perkal lives in Yerushalayim with her family and enjoys writing in various forms, as well as translating, editing and copywriting. Pessie Frankel is an English teacher, writer and speaker living in Beit Shemesh. Her publishing company, M&M Books, publishes ESL materials that are widely used wherever English is taught as a second language.

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

How did you realize that writing childrens’ books was your niche?

Pessie: There weren’t that many kids’ books in the Jewish world back in my day, but I remember loving a book called K’ton Ton. And until today, I love Dr. Seuss’ rhyme and rhythm and have read his books to my kids hundreds (thousands?) of times.

Pessie: I was doing the puzzle pages for Hamodia and decided to submit a story that Yocheved Leah and I had written. Then the paper wanted more, and we were glad to keep at it. I teach kids and have kids, and I’m a kid myself someplace inside…

Yocheved Leah: The first two books about Savta Simcha came out when I was quite young, and I probably know all the stories by heart. I also loved Miriam Elias’ books, starting with Try for a Dream, as well as Libby Lazewnik’s Shira books. Another book that goes back a long time and that I read over and over was Once Upon America. Because there were far fewer Jewish books available back then, say 30 to 35 ago, we read classics like All for the Boss (the adult version; there were no kids’ editions) and Marcus Lehman’s books at young ages. I am constantly amazed and grateful for the variety of frum Jewish books available today.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever received? Pessie: Hamodia once surveyed readers about their favorite columns and features. The editors let me know that some people chose “Privileged Information” by A. Pe’er (a political column) and Mrs. Honig’s stories. That’s when I realized that our audience wasn’t only kids. Yocheved Leah: Yes, we’ve received feedback that adults like our stories too. Our editor once told me that her 80-yearold mother-in-law enjoys our stories. As I read years ago in a writing book, a good children’s

story is one that adults enjoy, too. At the same time, we’ve made sure to keep our ideas and vocabulary kid-friendly, so our stories can be read easily.

What comes first, your story or your message? Pessie: Usually, something happens in my house, in my classroom or in my life, which makes me think, “Hey, this can totally be a story.” Then we figure out what the message is.

What should a children’s book always have? What should it never have? Pessie: All children’s books must have a child as the protagonist. Kids want to read about kids like them. And kids need to figure things out for themselves; no adult in the story should be solving their problems for them. Most importantly, don’t spell everything out for the kids. Kids are very smart. Let them figure out the lesson themselves!

At what stage did you write your first children’s book? Pessie: Yocheved Leah and I were the official class writers, and we’d be pressed into service anytime a goodbye song, a slogan, or any writing was needed. We wrote our first story when we were in elementary school, but we only published it after we were both married. For years people would open their eyes in surprise when they heard that we write Mrs. Honig’s stories because they expected the authors to be grandmothers,

and when we started out, we were in our early twenties. But now we are finally catching up with Mrs. Honig because we are finally grandmothers ourselves. Baruch Hashem!

What was the most difficult part about writing these stories? Pessie: All of our short stories first appeared in Hamodia or Binah. Working with a newspaper deadline can be very difficult. We have ideas all around us, but sometimes we really need to brainstorm to think of a workable story. In the end, Hashem always helps us find an idea.

Is there a story that flopped, or almost flopped? Pessie: I remember a story that was rejected. It was called “My Alarming Clock.” The editors didn’t like it, for some reason, but I loved it! So we just put it away, and a few years later we submitted it again, and everyone was very happy with it.

Which of your stories are your personal favorites? Pessie: I like the fantasy stories best — like when there is a pill that has the multiplication table on it, and all you need to do is swallow it. These stories are primarily in our third volume of stories, Fancies and Fantasy, but we have some of them in all of our books. Yocheved Leah: I enjoy the fantasy stories too, and they’re fun to write, but I also love putting in a little history when I can. (This is reminiscent of our school days — Pessie always loved science while I always loved history.)

Though based in Eretz Yisroel, Dena Ackerman has managed to delight people the world over with her amazing art. Here at The Boro Park View, we’ve also been fortunate to feature some of her artwork. Now it’s time to go behind the brush and meet the person behind the pictures.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist? Were you born with a brush in your hand? Pretty much! I’ve been drawing and painting as far back as I can remember, and like many artistic kids, was known as the “class artist.” My parents encouraged me and sent me to a variety of classes and private lessons, and being an artist was simply part of my identity. However, I didn’t realize that I could make a living as an artist until I was older and had worked at a number of other jobs.

What kind of training did it take for you to perfect your skills? I didn’t go to art school, so in a way I am self-taught.

144

The Boro Park View

But I was lucky to have taken art lessons with many talented teachers, who taught me the basics and showed me how to use different materials and styles. I learned how to use charcoal, colored pencils, markers, watercolors, acrylic paints, airbrushing, ink and calligraphy pens. I started from the basics of how light and shadow interact and eventually worked up to portrait drawing. In my spare time, I did a lot of drawing and painting as well. I created cartoons, paper dolls, copied illustrations from my favorite books, painted bowls of fruit, drew self-portraits, and doodled all over my school notes. You couldn’t stop me!

What is your favorite medium? I love using ink, colored pencils and acrylic paint, but my favorite medium is probably watercolors.

When it comes to children’s books, do you always use the same medium and style? I have what I call my “default” style, where I use black ink to outline the drawings, and then paint them with watercolors. But I have done children’s books in other styles as well, including pencil drawings, black-and-white ink drawings and colored pencil on top of watercolor. In one case, I illustrated a book entirely with cut-paper.

How many books have you illustrated? I’ve illustrated eighteen picture books, thirteen chapter books, as well as text books, magazines, and other types of publications. I hope to do many more, b’ezras Hashem!

Can you describe the process of collaborating on a book? A picture book is done in three stages. The first stage is where I create thumbnail sketches. They’re called thumbnail sketches because they’re very small drawings, and while not quite the size of a thumbnail, they’re often only a couple of square inches in size. They’re quick and messy, but very useful for working out the composition on each page: what to draw, and how to arrange it along with the text.

After the publisher or author gives me feedback on the thumbnail sketches, I start on stage two, which is a round of more detailed sketches of each page. When I get feedback on those, I move on to the third stage, which is the final artwork for each page of the book!

How long does it take to illustrate a book? The amount of time it takes to illustrate a book fluctuates wildly, depending on how complex and time-consuming the project is. Some subjects require me to spend more time researching and collecting reference photos (like a book set in a certain historical period). Some styles of art are more laborious, and some can be done more quickly. I recently did a book under a tight deadline in about six weeks. However, one of the most complex books I did took over two years to complete! The same considerations dictate how long a single illustration will take. I’ve never timed myself, so I’m just guessing, but I’d estimate that a single illustration takes me between two and ten hours.

Do you use an electronic sketchpad or regular pen and paper? I’m old-fashioned! I work very traditionally, with paper, pencil, ink and paints. When the artwork is complete, I photograph the art and use my computer to clean it up and make corrections.

What was your hardest book to design? What made it so difficult? The most challenging book I worked on is called The Creation Book (written by Chani Gansburg/Hachai publishers). Around that time, I saw some beautiful cut-paper designs, and I thought it would be amazing to illustrate an entire book like that. I started with sketches, as I always do, but the final art was cut out from colored paper and photographed, so that you could see all the 3-D shapes and shadows. It required a lot of patience, from cutting out and gluing all the small bits of paper together, to photographing each image properly, and finally using the computer to put it all together. I don’t usually have patience for very detailed, fiddly artwork, so the process was frustrating at times. By the time I finished this book, I promised (bli neder) that I would never illustrate another book like that again!

What was your favorite book to illustrate, and why? One of my favorite books to illustrate is called Amazing Stories of Ancient Times. It’s a collection of five stories by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. For each story, we picked a certain time period and style of artwork, so each one has a very different look. All of them are black and white. One was set in medieval times (the Dark Ages up to the 1400s) and illustrated in the old woodcut style. Another was set in the time of the Renaissance (1300– 1600s), and another is more Edwardian (early 1900s), with a darker, gothic feeling. Working on this book, I had a chance to closely study the styles, clothing and art of various time periods. It was an exciting project and a huge learning experience, which pushed all my creative and stylistic boundaries.

Is there a living to be made in illustrating? Yes, there is a living in illustration for those who are skilled at what they do, willing to work hard, and able to market themselves. It’s also helpful if you have multiple sources of income. In addition to illustrating books, I paint portraits and other types of fine art, and I also create illustrations for magazines, businesses and advertisements. Additionally, I teach at a local art school, and I am starting the process of putting my courses online so that I can reach a larger number of people. A simple illustration can start at a couple of hundred dollars, and a large project starts in the thousands.

Do you feel that doing art for a living is more hobby or more work? Being a professional artist means running a business like any other. I would love to sit and create art all day without having to worry about the business side of things! But if you want to do art as a living, it has to be treated like a real job. I have a business coach who helps me stay organized, focused and growing.

Do you ever get burned out? If yes, how do you recharge? I really don’t get burned out! I always say that my work keeps me sane. When life gets stressful, my art makes me feel calm, happy and productive. If I need to recharge, I love studying other artists’ work, hoping that maybe, one day, I can infuse some of their genius into my own work.

Is there any type of art you haven’t yet tried that is calling your name? Oh, yes, definitely! I’ve seen incredible paintings and illustrations done with gouache paints, so I bought some a few months ago. I haven’t been able to experiment too much with them yet, but I want to learn how to use them properly. I’d also like to paint with oils. I usually paint portraits with watercolors or acrylic paint. Acrylics have the look of oil paints, but dry faster and are less messy. One day I’d like to try painting with oils, which are supposed to be easier than working with acrylics. I attended a print-making workshop a few months ago and learned a new technique! We used small knives to carve out designs in linoleum, and used the carved-out drawing to create ink prints… kind of like very fancy stamps! I wouldn’t say it’s calling my name, but I had fun and would love to try doing it again one day. There are so many ways to create beautiful things!

Any tips for budding artists? The best learning methods, in my opinion, are observation and practice. First, observe and absorb as much as you can. Look for the beauty that’s all around us: in an old building, in a reunion of old friends, in some fallen leaves floating in a puddle. Watch people: how they look, how they move, how they react, how they express themselves. The next stage is practice. Draw, draw, and draw some more. Becoming skilled at anything comes with time and practice. Experiment with different mediums — crayons, markers, pens, pastels, paints, whatever! Don’t worry about creating something good; just focus on learning and having fun. Ultimately, art is a form of expression. It takes skill and passion to communicate effectively. Build your skills through practice, and your passion through living a full life, observing everything around you, and trying to make this world just a little bit better and more beautiful.

A minhag with a mesorah ...

THE NUMBER ONE STEP FOR A STRESS -FREE SIMCHAH Making a wedding is always an exciting and emotional time. The whole family, mechutanim, grandparents, children and not to mention the chassan and kallah, get pulled into the excitement as they count down to that special day, when they’ll finally be led under the chuppah. The to-do list is long and detailed. You need to clothe the entire family. Furnish the apartment. Buy the shtafir, plan the logistics of the chasunah, organize the sheva berachas and... the list never really finishes. You try to think of every detail. You take note of every advice shared by your family and friends. You daven and hope that everything goes well and your simchah will be a ‘simchah with simchah’. You flip through every sefer for segulos that ‘guarantee’ you more Siyata dishmaya. Is there something more you can do, you wonder?

The answer is yes. And fortunately, it takes only one phone call!

‫שבת‬ ‫באווארפן‬ ,‫ צופרידן‬,‫רואיג‬ ‫מיט א שמייכל‬

to do to make sure you can celebrate your simchah with peace of mind. So yes, just one phone call to Einey Yeshuah and, like the hundreds of mechutanim before you, the real stress and worry is over. One short phone call and you’re registered in the ‘’Sefer Hasimchah’’. That’s all it takes to ensure that Einey Yeshuos has you and your family in mind with the special segulos and practices, all based on solid tradition.

And, as you move forward, from the first exhilarating moments of anticipation as you bring in Shabbos Aufruf, until that satisfied sigh of nachas and sheer gratitude at the last sheva berachos, you’ll have the calmness and serenity of knowing that you’ve done your part in bringing this extra protection and siyata dishmaya to your special occasion

Already as far back as in the times of the Tashba’’tz (around 600 years ago) we find a minhag for mechutanim to practice certain segulos to ward off the Eyin Harah (Tashbatz, Katan, Ch 464). Still later, the Shevet Mussar cautions about protecting against Eyin Harah especially families of Chasan and Kallah! In fact, that’s one of the reasons why we break a glass under the chuppah - to protect against any Eyin Harah that may be present (Ohr Hachamah). We see that based on our mesorah, protecting against Eyin Harah is the correct and necessary hishtadlus for you

Today’s bookshelves are lined with comic books. The younger generation seems to enjoy reading these captivating and suspense-filled pages. (Of course, adults enjoy a good, humorous strip, too!) Is this a positive movement in the world of literacy? See why seeing and reading together make the material come alive.

Funny or not…

Early Comics

The term “comic” denotes something funny, silly and child-like. That’s why some choose to call it a “graphic novel,” giving it added respectability.

Comics have been published in newspapers since the 1890s. Originally intended for the adult population, they were published in the papers that were read by adults only. With time, kids began to read them too — a reality that caused some to grow alarmed. Teachers and librarians opposed comics. In general, comic books weren’t held in high regard. In 1940, comic books sold for 10 cents, while your average hardcover juvenile book cost $2. That’s a 20:1 pricedifference ratio! In the mid–twentieth century, people feared that reading comics would result in insanity, immorality and illiteracy.

158

The Boro Park View

The Comic Strip Debate While those extreme fallacies never seemed to pan out, people still seemed reluctant to embrace comics. Those of the old school still consider comics bad for kids, claiming they provide distraction and a simplified version of reading that seems inferior in developmental benefits when compared to “serious books.” Comics also offer less intellectual stamina, which may be a lost opportunity in the rich lingual development reading can cultivate.

More recently, a belief that comics may actually be good for literacy is on the rise. Comics are a comfortable channel for boosting language and word banks. Kids interact with both the text and the images, which encourages them to read between the lines and reach inferred conclusions. The fun and easy-to-follow format can turn reluctant readers into enthusiastic page-turners. There are kids who wouldn’t read at all otherwise. Data shows that kids between the ages of seven and twelve are particularly obsessed with comics. A child with reading disabilities may be intimidated by long pages of text, but may have the confidence to try easyto-follow comics instead. The text, accompanied by cues for context, helps struggling readers understand things they otherwise probably wouldn’t. In addition, emotions are easily identified in comic format.

Not a Genre, a Format! Early comics were considered a less educational platform. Today, comics are just like any other book. The pictorial layout is simply their format, not a genre in itself. Comics can be used for all kinds of genres – from historical events to science fiction, nature, science and relationships. Standard literary techniques and styles are heavily implemented, too. There is an emphasis on plot — with typically exciting and complex twists and turns — and much character development, where characters are wholesome and dynamic. They contain perspective, cause and effect, onomatopoeia and conflict. Interestingly, Gadi was drawn into the world of Torah through his drawings! Born in Odessa, USSR, to non-frum parents, Gadi was a natural artist. One of his first jobs was drawing illustrations of the Bible for a priest. He asked some technical questions for drawing accuracy, but the priest had no answers for him, telling him, “No questions allowed!” This raised theological questions on religion in Gadi’s mind. Later, when he came across Jewish children who, surprisingly, did have answers, he came to learn about Yiddishkeit. Today, Gadi lives in Kiryat Sefer where he learns in kollel most of the day and sketches through much of the night.

Functions of a Comic Strip There are many effective purposes comics can accomplish. Political Punching Cartoons offer a whimsical and often sarcastic way to express criticism. Frum comic king Yoni Gerstein views his capacity as a political cartoonist as a way to portray pure Torah ideals in the right light. He has trained dozens of frum artists into the field, but claims the task isn’t easy. “You can teach proportions and perspective, how to create a sense of movement… but you can’t teach people how to be funny.”

Satire The Kichels strip by Bracha Stein and Chani Judowitz sketches human, and frum, foibles. It is light mussar, pointing out our idiosyncrasies in an easy-to-digest, fun manner that keeps readers wishing for more.

Brainteasing Though Gadi Pollack has illustrated myriads of books and comics, his most popular and sought-after set is probably The Yiddishe Kop series. Detailed clue-filled illustrations along with brainteasing questions make kids (and adults!) apply intelligence and real thinking skills that sharpen the mind. Indeed, it takes a Yiddishe kop to create this series!

But Yossel is a good, ehrliche Yid, and he insists on keeping all the halachos of Shabbos properly, even in his new and difficult situation. Then some mysterious developments begin to occur… Shugashvili’s Secret is a thrilling comics book that teaches hilchos Shabbos to children, while entertaining them at the same time! By Rabbi Juravel shlit”a.

There was something fascinating about watching the storm unleash its fury, a wild, uncontrolled force wreaking havoc on the world they knew. Storm Chasers is an unforgettable and uplifting story that will keep you enthralled as the Friedowitzes bravely confront the challenges of the unknown, persevering with lots of love, laughter and faith in Hashem. By M. Jakubowicz.

Have a ton of fun learning to draw with art instructors Faigy and Yoni from the Tzeepor Family! This book will teach you cool drawing techniques using the four basic shapes: the ball, the box, the cone, and the can. It will lay the foundation to art and cultivate the artistic talent in you.
