(Re: Zeida, Issue 110) I read the truly inspiring and amazing account of Private Zirkind’s experiences in the army. What awesome mesirus nefesh he displayed! And wow, what memories it brought back. The mention of his mother, Aidela Zirkind, took me right back to my fifth grade classroom in the early years of Pupa school, where we had the zechus of having the beloved Mrs. Zirkind as our teacher. Besides being a great teacher and role model, she always had stacks of school supplies as rewards and would regularly open our looseleafs and fill them up with sheets of paper as praise for good behavior. In those days, before stickers and stamps, we were so proud to receive her signature as an award for good work. She’d loop the A to the Z in an artistic swirl, and we’d cherish those papers. I’m sure most students, who are now great-grandmothers, will never forget a teacher like Aidela Zirkind. A Student of Pupa

SOME SHORTCUTS I TOOK

(Re: Cupcakes: You Bake — They Make, Issue 110) At the risk of being cliche, your cupcake feature… took the cake! I wanted to share with your readership some shortcuts I took in implementing this fantastic idea, since I don’t measure my kids’ excitement in proportion to how much work I put in... (Though if you can make everything at home, kol hakavod!) First, I switched the base to doughnuts, because, well, Chanukah, and because inquiring at a local grocery taught me that I can purchase them unadorned for the purpose I needed.

Spread the joy this Chanukah, with everyone’s favorite cream cheese. Have it with bagels or bread, make a nice vegetable dip or cheesecake. Or if you really want you can stuff it in a donut and call it artisanally crafted.

As for the dreidel adornments, while ours didn’t compare to the lovely chocolate molds you featured, I found dreidelshaped jellies at the grocery that were almost as exciting. Also, as suggested, I used jelly rings for the mini doughnuts. I dipped half into boiling water for a second and then straight into sprinkles, and they looked great. I actually made the whip, as instructed, but there might be a store-bought option there too for those of you who want all the fun without the dishes. So here you have the whole package — all wrapped up in a fantastic Chanukah activity. Thank you for your wonderful and fun ideas! S.H.

WHAT A WASTE

(Re: Candlelight Party, Issue 110) The Chanukah party you featured last week was gorgeous, both the setup and the recipes. I must say, though, that I was a bit flabbergasted when I saw the dessert. I don’t feel it is appropriate to feature such a blatant display of baal tashchis by covering an entire glass with chocolate and nuts that won’t be eaten. It is a waste of money and an example of the squandering attitude that we see in today’s generation. Please make a note of this. B.L. FESTIVE AND FUN

(Re: Chanukah Carnival, Issue 109) The Chanukah carnival party was so enticing! It was just so enjoyable to feast on the sight of all that pastel and all those beautiful goodies. And you can be sure there were steak sandwiches on my menu the very first night of Chanukah! They were delicious and a truly great idea for a festive yet fun Chanukah meal. S.R.

(Inbox, Issue 109) Growing up in a family of mostly (beautiful) redheads, I would like to add the following, with no intent of stereotyping either Hungarians or redheads! When I was a child 50 years ago, wherever we went — the bank, shopping, etc. — we’d always get comments about how beautiful our red hair is. Yes, we also knew that redheads were a source of embarrassment in some European countries, but that fact never got in the way of our self-esteem! Thanks for a great magazine. B.B. (Your Voice, Issue 109) First, thank you for all of your amazing articles, recipes and features! I look forward to reading them all every week. As a former teacher who has received tips and gifts and is now, baruch Hashem, a mother giving them to my children’s educators, I want to add my thoughts in regard to this topic. The goal of tipping or gifting is to show appreciation. The most obvious times for that is Chanukah and Purim, but small chocolates and Danishes in between can show appreciation just as much when accompanied with a personal note. Personally, I didn’t like getting one big tip pooled together from the entire class. I felt the mothers were forced into it, and it lost the personal expressions of thanks that I would’ve gotten otherwise. Those in your children’s lives — teachers, therapists, bus drivers, secretaries, principals, etc. — like knowing you appreciate them personally for all the work they do. And by showing them that you acknowledge their work, you are giving them the kochos to continue. Additionally, remember that by expressing your hakaras hatov, they will automatically be more motivated to do their utmost in the future. This will benefit your most prized possessions, as your kinderlach are in their care many hours each day. Give with heart, and it will enter their hearts. A Former Teacher EDITOR’S BULLETIN We were saddened to receive the news that Mrs. Pauline Berger, the librarian of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch for 35 years, whose letter appeared in the past week’s Inbox of The Boro Park View, was nifteres this past Thursday, November 25. Students shared how much love and warmth Mrs. Berger spread from within the walls of the library. L’ilu nishmasah, readers are encouraged to donate books and seforim to yeshivos and schools: ‫פערל בת ברוך‬ ‫ע”ה‬.

Why were the Chashmonaim called this way? What does Chashmonai mean? In Al Hanissim, we say, “Bimei Mattisyahu Chashmonai u’vanav.” Some say that this refers to two separate people — one was Mattisyahu and the other was “Chashmonai.” It is commonly accepted, however, that the pasuk in fact represents only Mattisyahu. The name “Chashmonai” may indicate that Mattisyahu came from the town of Chashmon, and it may simply have been a family name. It is also similar to the word Chashmani in Tehillim (68:32) — “ye’esayu chashmanim” — which is an expression of nobility. Indeed, Mattisyahu, and later his children, were respectable, aristocratic individuals who galvanized all of Klal Yisroel with their zeal.

CHAPTER 35 RECAP: Nechemiah Kohen, under the guise of a convert to Islam, reaches the sultan’s palace and reports Shabbesai Tzvi. Shabbesai Tzvi, sensing the impending danger, orders his followers to disperse. Soon the sultan’s guards take Shabbesai Tzvi, Gamliel, Yechiel and Mukian to Adrianople, where, defeated, Shabbesai Tzvi tries to appeal to the sultan’s mercy.

“Y

our Majesty, may I speak?” asked Guidom Chayatzadi. “Come forward, Guidom. We are always willing to hear your wise words.” “Your Majesty, my heart is full of many things that need to be said, but first, I would like to do an act of kindness. One of the prisoners is a young man who has always found favor in the eyes of the royal family. He is a merchant of fine fabrics, and if Your Majesty recalls, he has often sent exquisite gifts to the royal family and was quite a frequent visitor to the palace some ten years ago.” The sultan looked closely at each of the prisoners. Recognition lit up his eyes when he looked at Yechiel. “Your Majesty, this young man was deceived by Shabbesai Tzvi,” continued Guidom in a soft tone. “He thought Shabbesai Tzvi was a holy man who held the power of the Kabbalah in his hands, whose every word was a Divine message directly from Heaven. Sadly, he was not the only one deceived. Most of the Jew-

60

ish people in the world were also deceived. This young man gave fifteen years of his life to a false Messiah. He is not a criminal; he is a victim! “This morning, his father,” he motioned to Yankiv to rise, “a wealthy and respected banker from Warsaw, came to me and begged me to help save his unfortunate son, who has a wife and two children in Smyrna. In view of the favor this man once found in the eyes of the royal family, and in view of his innocent motives, I respectfully ask for royal mercy on his behalf.” The sultan glared at Yechiel for several endless moments. The hope that had welled up in Yechiel’s heart began to ebb under the sultan’s harsh gaze. “Granted,” said the sultan gruffly. “Let him go stand with his father.” Still trembling, Yechiel breathed a long sigh of relief. Without turning his back to the sultan, he went to his father’s side. Father and son embraced tearfully but wordlessly. “Your Majesty, I would not dare plead for mercy on behalf of the rebel Shabbesai Tzvi,” continued

Guidom, speaking more sharply. “He isn’t deserving of your kindness. Yet, another thought crosses my mind. This rebel is not only the enemy of the Crown. He’s also the enemy of his own people. He has done more damage to their Torah than a thousand years of gentile persecutors, and still, the Jews follow him blindly. He has actually created a new religion centered on himself. If he’s executed the people will believe in him even more than before. We’ll never be rid of the turmoil he’s created.” “Your concern for your former brothers is well known and touching, Guidom,” said the sultan. “It seems to us, however, that if we indeed execute him, the Jews would be left without a leader or a religion. Perhaps they could then be persuaded to accept Islam, the true religion.” “Your Majesty, the Jewish people may follow the wrong religion, but they are still my brothers. I am proud to admit that their pain is my pain, and I’m always ready to plead on their behalf. But there’s a greater concern here. Perhaps it has not been brought to Your Majesty’s attention that increasing numbers of Muslims and Christians believe that this man is the Messiah. Indeed, I can see many similarities between this new religion and Christianity, both in its origins and its beliefs. If he’s executed, many tens of thousands, even millions, of Muslims and Christians might very well join this new religion. Do we need a new

Christianity, Your Majesty? Do we not have enough difficulty with the one that already exists?” He paused to let his words sink in before he continued. “Moreover, if a new religion indeed emerges from this, all its believers will be sworn enemies of the Crown, because they will blame the Crown for the death of their Messiah and the prevention of the Final Redemption of the world. If this religion becomes powerful enough, it might even topple the Empire. Is it wise to create a powerful new force that may destroy us?” “You speak wise words, Guidom. Kiuprili Ahmed, what are your thoughts?” “Guidom’s words have the ring of truth,” said the Grand Vizier. “I regret that I did not come to the realization myself.” “What do you suggest, Guidom?” asked the sultan. “I suggest we discredit this rebel for always, in the eyes of his people and in the eyes of the world. I suggest that he be given a choice. Either he faces the executioner’s axe, or he assumes the turban of Islam and becomes a Muslim.” The sultan nodded gravely. “Well spoken, Guidom! Kiuprili Ahmed, do you see a flaw?” “None, Your Majesty. It is brilliant.” “Then so shall it be. Shabbesai Tzvi, you are to decide at this very moment for yourself and your companions. Which is it to be? The executioner’s axe or the turban of Islam?” All eyes in the chamber turned to the silent figure of Shabbesai Tzvi. His face was ashen, and he swayed, as if he were about to faint. The most important question of his life lay before him, but his spirit was crushed. He could think of nothing to do. “What have you decided?” roared the sultan. “Do something, Master!” whispered Mukian the Macedonian. “Save your life and ours!” “It does not matter,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a lifeless voice. “All is lost. I came so close, but now, all is lost.” “You must live to fulfill your destiny, Master. Convert and save yourself! Save all of us! Surely, this is just part of the suffering Moshiach must bear for his people.” “Speak, Shabbesai Tzvi,” commanded the sultan. “What have you decided?” Once again, Shabbesai Tzvi fell to his knees. “I will be proud to be a Muslim,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, his voice shaking. “Excellent, excellent. Companions of Shabbesai Tzvi, do you also accept?” Shabbesai Tzvi looked at them and nodded imperceptibly. One by one, they fell to their knees beside their Master. In the rear, Yechiel buried his face in his hands and wept silently. “Shabbesai Tzvi, because you are a man of stature among your people, you will be treated with honor,” said the sultan. “In time, others may follow your courageous example. You and your companions are free men. Your name shall no longer be Shabbesai Tzvi but Aziz Mehmet Effendi. You shall be given the honorary post of Keeper of the Gates. Welcome

The sultan looked closely at each of the prisoners. Recognition lit up his eyes when he looked at Yechiel.

to Islam, Mehmet Effendi, Keeper of the Gates.” The sultan rose from the couch and left the chamber, and the dignitaries and officials dispersed. Shabbesai Tzvi struggled to his feet. In the rear, Yechiel was rooted in his place by dismay and shock. In spite of all his misgivings, it was not until this moment that he saw Shabbesai Tzvi as an impostor. His dream was completely and utterly shattered, his heart broken. Yankiv had his arm around his son’s shoulders. “Do not weep, Yechiel,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, a mad glint in his eyes. “You must accept what I’ve done without question. Nothing has really changed. It’s good that you avoided conversion; it will be useful to us. I could have struck down the sultan and all his advisers in an instant, but I chose not to do it. It is a deep mystery, and in the end, it will all be explained.” “Don’t you realize that at last you’ve been unmasked?” asked Yechiel bitterly. “You are not Moshiach, nor even a faithful Jew. You’ve trampled on everything sacred, Shabbesai Tzvi. You’ve caused me to sin against the Almighty, and I only pray that He’ll accept my sincere repentance. Because of you, I have also caused my father great pain, and I beg his forgiveness.” “You are a madman, Shabbesai Tzvi,” said Yankiv, “and you’ve infected the whole world with your madness. You’ve destroyed many lives. But the Almighty has taken pity on His people, and you’ve been unmasked before you could destroy the rest. Hopefully, we’ll never hear your name again. Yechiel, are you ready to go home?” “Yes, Father,” said Yechiel. “I’m ready.” “Fool! Traitor!” screamed Shabbesai Tzvi hysterically. “By denying me, you have forfeited your share in the world to come. I will destroy you.” Father and son turned and walked away, the mad ravings of Shabbesai Tzvi slowly fading behind them.

“It does not matter,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a lifeless voice. “All is lost. I came so close, but now, all is lost.”

Coming after years of unspeakable suffering, the rise of Shabbesai Tzvi had kindled renewed hope in Jewish hearts and revived their downtrodden spirits. As a result, the news of Shabbesai Tzvi’s conversion to Islam dealt a crushing blow to the Jewish people. The disappointment, the shame and the guilt were almost too much to bear. Unfortunately, Yankiv Tomashov’s hope that Shabbesai Tzvi’s name would never be heard again was not fulfilled. Shabbesai Tzvi lived as a Muslim, but he kept parts of the Torah along with a group of followers who had also converted to Islam. To the Muslims he said that he did this to attract the Jewish people to Islam. To the Jewish people he continued to claim he was Moshiach and that his conversion was necessary to enable him to gather the remaining Divine sparks scattered among the gentiles. Nattan Haazati, Avraham Yechini, Shmuel Primo, Mattisyahu Bloch and a host of other followers joined in this cry. Most of the Jewish people, however, paid no more heed to Shabbesai Tzvi. They repented for their errant ways and embraced the Torah with renewed resolve to obey Its every word. For some people, however, the dream was too dear to abandon, and the movement refused to die. Even after the death of Shabbesai Tzvi in Dulcigno, Albania, ten years later, some of his followers still clung to the hope that he would one day return and take the Jewish people out of exile. For a full century, the Jewish people suffered from the legacy of Shabbesai Tzvi and from assorted other adventurers who laid claim to his fallen mantle and teachings. But none of them ever gained the wide following Shabbesai Tzvi had garnered, as the Jewish people continued to wait for the true Moshiach who would gather them from the four corners of the Earth and bring them back to Yerushalayim with the banner of the holy Torah held high.

Many Questions but Few Answers as Omicron COVID-19 Variant Emerges A COVID-19 variant first detected in South Africa is having a global impact, with scientists racing to study what could be an extremely contagious coronavirus strain while governments once again try to pinpoint best practices to protect their countries. According to the Associated Press, a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in South Africa’s Gauteng province had infection rates spiking from 200 over the past few weeks, to 2,465 cases reported on Thanksgiving alone. Scientists studying the outbreak discovered the new variant, dubbed Omicron by the World Health Organization, taking its name from a letter in the Greek alphabet. Omicron was categorized as a “variant of concern” with “an increased risk of reinfection,” and health experts say it could take weeks to determine if it is more infectious than previous strains of the virus and if it is vaccineresistant. Cases of Omicron were confirmed over the weekend in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic and Israel, reported CNN. Israel acted swiftly, closing its skies to foreign nationals for two weeks on one day’s notice, leaving many Chanukah travelers scrambling to get into the country before the skies closed at midnight Sunday night. Returning Israelis will be subject to quarantine and testing upon their return home. Brown University’s, Dr. Philip A. Chan, who specializes in infectious diseases, emphasized the importance of obtaining additional data to better evaluate this latest strain. The fact that Omicron appears to have overtaken the Delta variant in South Africa is troubling, suggesting that it may be able to overcome some natural and vaccine immunity, reported The New York Times. “Neither of those things are good, obviously, and I think those are the two reasons that have experts and scientists so concerned,” said Dr. Chan. Unequal vaccination efforts throughout the world are contributing to COVID-19’s ability to mutate into strains that are even more contagious than their predecessors, observed Dr. Chan, adding, “We are half-treating the pandemic.” While there have been no confirmed Omicron cases in the United States as of this writing, government infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the variant’s arrival in the United States is inevitable. With New York seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases and the winter posing even greater risks for transmission, Governor Kathy Hochul proclaimed a state of emergency last Friday. “While the new Omicron variant has yet to be detected in New York State, it’s coming,” said the governor. The state of emergency will give state hospitals the ability to limit nonessential procedures in order to boost capacity 70

and hopefully avoid staffing shortages. Hochul also reminded New Yorkers that the best way to fight COVID-19 is just one jab away. “The vaccine remains one of our greatest weapons in fighting the pandemic, and I encourage every New Yorker to get vaccinated and get the booster if you’re fully vaccinated,” said the governor.

Adams Promises Tougher Stance on Bail in Coming Days Mayor-elect Eric Adams vowed to do his part to address problems created by the state’s bail reforms, which have had dangerous criminals back out on the streets within hours of their arrest. According to The City, Adams said that he would use his position as mayor to appoint criminal court judges who shared his views on prioritizing safety in New York City. Adams said that he would not allow those who pose an imminent threat to the city to be “placed back on my streets and back into my community.” Adams’ remarks were a slight step back from his postelection promise to roll back statewide bail reforms, saying that his first concern was making sure that judges use their full power to fight crime. “What’s happening now, it’s not the bill — [it’s] the judges,” said Adams. “They are not putting bail on where they could put bail on. You can’t have someone arrested with a gun on Monday and then out on the streets on Tuesday.” Adams has been careful to walk a fine line, noting that he is not looking to have those committing minor offenses held without bail. “I’m talking about the imminent threat to safety, particularly gun violence,” said Adams in an early November interview. “If you are a person who discharges a weapon, or a person who on multiple occasions you were found to carry a weapon, that should be taken into account.”

Commission’s Interim Report Finds Fatal Flaws in Meron Negligence, failed management and unprofessionalism all contributed to the Lag Ba’omer tragedy that claimed 45 lives in Meron, according to an interim report submitted by an Israeli commission of inquiry. After receiving the report, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that his administration would study its findings to ensure that this year’s Lag Ba’omer festivities are safe, said Hamodia.

The report was also submitted to Israel’s Religious Affairs Ministry and its Public Security Ministry and called for appointing an official minister to oversee the pre-Lag Ba’omer preparations, limiting attendance to 20,000, improving the site’s infrastructure, moving crowds to different areas on the mountain, and expanding the site to keep the area less congested. But the report came up short for Knesset member Rabbi Moshe Gafni, who said that it didn’t address two key points — budgeting and improving access to the area — and he criticized the Israeli government for its lackluster approach to the site. “I have said this all these years, and I repeat it again,” said Rabbi Gafni. “It is not possible to reach a solution in such a place without the state investing in the access roads and in the site itself. It could very well be that if they had invested as they had invested elsewhere, this terrible catastrophe would have been spared.”

Kedem Unveils Plans for New Orange County Production, Bottling and Visitors Site in Orange County The Goshen planning board is currently reviewing plans submitted by Royal Wine Corporation that would bring a massive Kedem facility to the upstate town on an 8- acre parcel located on Route 17M. The Times Herald-Record reported that Royal Wine is building the Orange County site to replace its existing Bayonne, New Jersey, bottling and storage facility. The plans include a 635,000-square-foot building that would have an overhead viewing area where visitors could watch the production process, from crushing to bottling and storage. Newly produced

wine and juice would be stored in 40,000-gallon tanks inside the plant, as well as in a dozen 46-foot-high storage tanks that would be built outside the building. The plans also feature a two-story visitors center and tasting room that would be open for ten hours each day from Sunday through Thursday and until noon on Friday. Royal Wine estimated that 100 visitors would come to the facility each day, with two to three busloads of children arriving each week during the summer months to see grape juice being made. According to the plans, Kedem would have 100 full-time workers at the site, with another 20 part-time workers employed during the August to October harvest season.

Local Law Enforcement Blown Away as Chicago Teens Return Hundreds in Lost Money Two Skokie teens found themselves in the headlines after returning hundreds of $20 bills that were floating through the air and carpeting the ground outside their yeshivah building. CBS Chicago reported that Zev Goldstein and Coby Kamish were outside Fasman Yeshiva High School when they saw the $20 bills all around them. Mystified by the money, the two twelfth graders looked around, and Kamish spotted a man in the distance stuffing the bills into his pockets. Assuming that the man had lost the money, Kamish began helping him pick up the bills, but when the man told him to just keep the money and then ran off, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly slid into place. Looking across the street, the teens saw an armored truck parked near a Bank of America ATM and realized that the winds had scattered the bills as they were being loaded into the vehicle. They collected as much money as they could, despite the blowing gusts, turning over nearly $800 in small bills to the police. “I thought the right thing was to give it back to the people,” said Kamish, adding, “It’s their money.” Members of local law enforcement praised the two boys, saying that they were both surprised and impressed by their honesty, but Fasman principal Rabbi Dovid Kupchik categorized the incident as the perfect teaching moment, reported Hamodia. “The guys had a chance to practice what they learned — twelve years of yeshivah education coming together to say ‘What are you going to do?’” observed Rabbi Kupchik.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR RECAP: Osher

gets into another argument with the boys and escapes to the beach, feeling like a failure once again. Reb Elazar walks Osher back to yeshivah and tells him a little about the background of the yeshivah building — remaining steadfast that there are certain things he will not divulge.

abbi Reiness and Osher walked back toward the house. The rain was pouring down, and there wasn’t another soul on the streets. Still, Elazar Reiness sensed that there was at least one pair of eyes fixed on them. He didn’t know if his gut feeling was right or not, and he didn’t want to turn around to find out. It was all so complicated, and the chances of success were so small, that he had to be very careful. Menashe Karni, the mediator who had come so highly recommended, was actually quite pleased right now. He was also being very cautious about their chances of succeeding, but he had noted to Elazar that they were off to a good start. Until now it had all been rather easy. The house facing the beach had been standing empty and partially demolished, but the entire back half was intact. Elazar had bought it from the owner, an elderly Arab woman, through a real estate agency, and then he’d renovated it. The room on the ground floor that had served as a shul ninety years ago had become the shiur room for the special yeshivah he had opened. In the front part, he opened the carpentry shop. He’d converted the upper floor to a residential apartment, and that brought Stage One of his plan to completion. The sea was roiling behind them, and a huge wave crashed ashore with a roar. Osher, who had already put his hand on the gate, turned around to look at it.

Electrolysis and laser are the most common permanent hair removal techniques. Laser works best on larger areas of condensed, darker hair, while electrolysis is for areas with finer, fewer hairs. Think of it like detailed hair removal, especially for delicate skin like your face or upper lip. Still, there are times when either treatment type will be more effective than the other, which is why it’s important to devise a treatment plan for laser and electrolysis based on your hair, density, body, skin color and pain tolerance.

“Hey!” he exclaimed. “What happened? Is everything okay?” Reb Elazar asked. “Um… yes. I thought for a second that I saw someone looking at us, but I must have made a mistake.” “You saw someone? Where?” So his gut feeling had not been off the mark, after all! “There, behind that corner. There was someone with an umbrella, and I think she was looking over here at us. I thought maybe it was…” He put his hand on the gate again. “Someone you know?” “No, no... it was probably my imagination.” Reb Elazar deliberated whether to tell Osher that he’d had the feeling that someone was watching them, not only right now, but for most of their walk. But he decided to stay quiet. What would he gain? Osher would probably start setting up lookouts to figure out who the imaginary follower was. “Osher, I’m so happy to see you!” Shlomo greeted them at the door to the carpentry shop. The other boys were inside, preparing supper. “And I’m sorry about before. I didn’t mean to offend you... I wasn’t expecting you to take my words so seriously…” Osher fixed him with a long stare, nodded slightly, and walked inside. The carpentry shop was warm, and he took off his coat, eased out of his wet shoes, and sat down in front of the radiator. “Did anyone come looking for me when I was out?” Reb Elazar asked Shlomo casually. “An order or anything?” “The carpentry shop was closed, Rebbi,” Shlomo pointed out as he brushed off the paprika and cumin that had stuck to his hands. The tantalizing aroma of well-spiced potatoes emerged from the kitchen. “It says so clearly outside. Anyway, no one came by, as far as I know.” “She wouldn’t have come from Bnei Brak on such a stormy day,” Osher whispered to himself. “It’s just not possible.” * * * * *

Ariella closed her umbrella and put it on the railing near the stairs. She knocked gently at the wooden door with the carvings, just to be polite, and then stuck her key into the lock. The door opened, but she stood outside for another moment, shaking the rain off her coat. She hung it on one of the hooks in the front hallway and then walked into the spacious living room. Her hostess lifted her eyes from the beading she was doing and smiled. “How are you?” she said. “Come in! I haven’t seen you all day. You’re very busy, aren’t you?” “A bit.” Ariella approached the small table, again just to be polite. She’d finally seen Rabbi Reiness today actually speaking to Osher, and she was pleased. When Osher had turned around, just before they walked into their courtyard, she thought, at first, that he may have spotted her. She’d hurried over to the next street, but two minutes later, when she emerged again on Haganah Street, he wasn’t there anymore. He must have not seen her, or if he had, he hadn’t realized it was her. She could say that her mission had been crowned with success. Only Hashem can see the thoughts of a person’s heart, and

man’s understanding is limited to what he sees with his eyes. But this rav made an excellent impression, from what she could see. His wife did, too. And if Ariella didn’t want Osher to know that she’d come — she couldn’t dig any deeper. Perhaps, with time, he’d calm down and concede that keeping this whole thing a secret was rather foolish. And in the meantime? She could go back to Bnei Brak. She could cancel her upcoming appointments with Sarah Reiness. Because even if she hadn’t been able to understand why the Reinesses had chosen to live here, she could assume that they had a good reason. Perhaps they had wanted to open their school specifically here, far from the hustle and bustle of the regular cities. Or maybe they’d been drawn by nostalgia… She couldn’t know, but it didn’t seem particularly worrying anymore, now that she knew that they were good people. “Do you see what I’m doing?” Aliza asked as she took five large blue stones

“What? Oh, yes…” “Or is it like I said before, that your head is not here, only your eyes are?” Ariella smiled but did not respond. “You brought your troubles over here with you, huh?” Ariella wondered if this was an accusation. It didn’t sound like it. “I’m sorry if you feel them as well,” she said after a moment, choosing her words carefully. “I guess my ‘troubles’ are just part of me. What can I do? Wherever I am, it all goes with me...” “You can learn to compartmentalize, to detach from them, just like you can learn to string stones,” Aliza said. She held the necklace away from her face to examine it from farther away. Or perhaps it was a bracelet? Whatever the case, Ariella really couldn’t find the beauty in it. “Would you want to learn how to do this?” Aliza continued. No, madame therapist, thank you very much. out of a clear plastic box. “Because it looks like your eyes are here but your mind is not.” Ariella smiled. This woman sounded like her erstwhile teachers. “Does my work seem interesting to you? I have lots of clients, and sometimes I also teach people how to do this.” “It really does look interesting,” Ariella said kindly. “So you can watch me, if you’d like.” Ariella pulled over another wooden chair and sat down. She watched how Aliza deftly strung an alternating sequence of big blue stones and small green ones. Her lips were constantly moving; was she saying Tehillim? Murmuring brachos for the anonymous woman who would wear this piece of jewelry? She fixed her gaze on the beads and tried to blank out her mind and not think about anything. “I see you’re very curious about beading,” Aliza declared after a few moments of silence.

I’m afraid I don’t have enough time to learn it all.” “So you found what you were looking for?” Aliza looked at her with clear eyes. “There’s a bracha in my home, huh? You just came, and everything fell into place so fast! You see that?” “Yes… Actually, it’s more like I arranged something for someone else. Me? I wish my problems could get sorted out so fast!” “You mean, like getting married?” Ariella suppressed a smile. “You could say that.” “So why don’t you do it, really? Do you want to be attached to your parents forever?” The question reminded Ariella of Osher. Osher, who chose to go so far away from home. True, many boys his age were in a dormitory anyway, but it pained her parents that not only did

he want to be far from home, he also wanted to maintain a very distant relationship with his family. And she? Women her age were usually no longer so dependent on their parents. Not that she was so dependent on them, really, but she was a prominent presence in their home. Would her parents get insulted if she told them that she wanted to live a little farther away? Not from them, of course. But from the familiar streets, the too-familiar city, and all the people who’d known her since she was little and remembered the rambunctious, lazy, scatterbrained Ariella… “Now you’re not even looking at what I’m doing!” Aliza chided her. “What’s the matter; are your troubles that big?” Ariella shook her head noncommittally. No, her troubles weren’t that big. How did those bumper stickers put it? Hakadosh Baruch Hu was that big. She had slowly recovered and built herself up again. Even people from her past knew that she had built upon the foundation of her childhood struggles to become a lovely, mature young woman. She’d overcome her problems, and had even found an excellent shidduch. And the fact that it had ended under such tragic circumstances did not erase the previous memories; it just added some more weight to the whole story. How could she extricate herself from under all this weighty stuff if she didn’t go somewhere else, somewhere new and clean? “Get married,” Aliza said. “You need to get married. You need a husband, that’s what you need. It’s not good to be alone.” “And what about you?” Ariella asked. She’d long learned to control her impulsivity, but she still kept it in her toolbox for emergencies. “Me? My marriage wasn’t a good one, so I’m better off like this.” Aliza chuckled, but it sounded hollow. “How was yours?” “I had a very good marriage, baruch Hashem.” “I thought so. But if you are so dreamy all the time, how can you be a good wife?” her hostess asked. “That’s exactly what I don’t know,” Ariella said, smiling one of her sweetest grins. What was strange about

this whole conversation was that even though Aliza was saying such annoying things, it wasn’t really bothering Ariella. On the contrary; she suddenly felt a certain peace and tranquility spreading all throughout her body. “That’s exactly why I haven’t remarried all this time.” “Well, how did you manage last time?” “I really don’t know.” Ariella took a deep breath. “I guess my husband was so good that he silently tolerated all of my shortcomings.” “That’s interesting.” Aliza laughed and then continued working. “So, you’re just not sure that you’ll find someone exactly like him again?” “Right. And back when I first got married, it wasn’t like I knew what a terrible housewife I’d be,” Ariella said candidly. She picked up a black stone. “So now you’re not even willing to try again?” “Actually, a shidduch was suggested some time ago, something really good. Not in Eretz Yisroel,” she added. Aliza listened attentively. “It looked like… everything was just right. I even checked to make sure that he wasn’t obsessively clean or organized.” Ariella paused. “And then, toward the end, when I thought I was on my way to getting engaged, he started talking about how important it is to be organized, and that he wasn’t so good about keeping up with external organization…” “External organization?” “You know, keeping seder with stuff. But he said that in his head, in his thinking, he was very organized, and he hoped that in an orderly house, it would be even easier for him…” “So you decided to end things.” Ariella sighed. “Exactly.” “So you need to learn to be organized.” For Aliza, it was all so plain and simple, apparently. “Come. We start with the small things. Come and help me with this necklace, and look how the orderly sequence of stones can make order in your mind as well.” Ariella wasn’t so sure about it, but she felt uncomfortable refusing. Ten minutes she’d give it, and then she’d go to her room and her quiet. And to her own private mess. To be continued…

Over the past few days, you’ve surely spent a lot of time over the frying pan. Doughnuts, fritlach, churros — all of these fried confections are delicious. Truthfully, however, nothing can compete with a good crispy latke. These recipes may be basic, but they attest that the simple things in life can be the most enjoyable.

SWEET POTATO L ATKES Sweet potatoes lend a delicious flavor to this classic. I like to add one regular potato for a crispy texture. Yields 10 to 15 latkes

INGREDIENTS 2 sweet potatoes 1 large potato 3 eggs 2 tsp. kosher salt

1 T. finely chopped onion ⅛ tsp. white pepper Oil for frying

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and grate the potatoes, either in the food processor with the kugel blade or on the small shredder blade of a four-sided grater. Combine this with the remaining ingredients. 2. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed frying pan. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, and fry until golden on both sides.

POTATO L ATKES This recipe is an oldie but goodie, with roots that are probably set in Europe. I’ve tried many versions over the years — those with flour in the batter, those served with applesauce, and many more. While these more exotic recipes come and go, this one is here to stay. Yields 10 large or 20 medium latkes

INGREDIENTS 3 large potatoes 3 eggs 1 T. kosher salt

⅛–¼ tsp. black pepper Oil for frying

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and grate the potatoes, either in the food processor with the kugel blade or on the small shredder blade of a four-sided grater. Combine this with the remaining ingredients. 2. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed frying pan. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. 3. Fry on medium-high heat until golden. Flip over and fry on the other side until all the latkes are done.

We are a nation of gratitude. As Yidden — Yehudim — our lives are patterned to hoda’ah, ever-growing thanks. Appreciation is our core essence. When a Yid says Hallel, he merits becoming more of a Yehudi, developing into a person who thanks Hashem always.

O

ne shining example of words composed to thank Hashem is Shiras Chana. Pained by her childless state, Chana went to the Mishkan to beg for a child. After her son Shmuel was born, she retraced her steps, this time offering a song of thanks — the famous Shiras Chana. Some of Hallel is paraphrased from her heartfelt words.

The son Chana was blessed with — Shmuel Hanavi — was the one who later anointed Dovid Hamelech. When Shmuel Hanavi arrived at Yishai’s home, they carried on a conversation sprinkled with pesukim of Hallel. Shmuel said that he had come to inform the family that the young shepherd in their midst had been chosen as the ‫לב‬ next king of Klal Yisroel. Dovid then proclaimed, “Odecha ki anisani... — I thank You, Hashem, because You answered me and were my salvation.” Yishai replied, “Even ma’asu habonim... — the stone that the builders rejected became the cornerstone.” David’s brothers weighed in, “Me’eis Hashem haysah zos... — this was from Hashem, it is wondrous in our eyes.” Shmuel then said, “Zeh hayom asah Hashem... — this is the day that Hashem made, we shall exult and rejoice in it.” Thus, Chana’s words filtered down to Dovid Hamelech, carrying forward her refrains of praise.

drowned in the Yam Suf, Moshe Rabbeinu led the Yidden in Hallel; after triumphing over the kings of Canaan, Klal Yisroel joined Yehoshua in song; and Devorah and Barak sang Hallel when they prevailed over Sisra. The basics of emunah can all be found in transformative ‫ הרופא לשבורי‬these chapters — Yetzias Mitzrayim, Krias Yam Suf, Matan Torah, techiyas hameisim and the coming of Moshiach. When we say Hallel, its words invest us with the power to laud and thank Hashem in every situation. Each expression of Hallel — l’hodos, l’hallel, l’shabei’ach, l’fa’er… — lifts us higher, granting us greater potential.

Hallel is an acronym for — He Who heals the broken heart. Nothing snaps a person out of depression like gratitude and acknowledging all that we have.

A BASIC TUNE Even before Chazal designated these six chapters of Hallel as our monthly and yom-tov expression of praise, and even before Dovid Hamelech integrated them in Tehillim, Klal Yisroel was already singing these tunes. As the Mitzrim

HALLEL AND ROSH CHODESH Chazal did not initially establish Rosh Chodesh as a day when Hallel is recited. It is neither a yom tov nor a time when Klal Yisroel experienced a specific miracle. In Bavel and later in Eretz Yisroel, the minhag evolved to say Hallel on Rosh Chodesh, becoming accepted the world over.

Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l, stated that one must look back and thank Hashem for allowing him to live through the past month, which is why we say Hallel on Rosh Chodesh. However, only half of Hallel is recited, to indicate that, as exceptional as Rosh Chodesh may be, it is still not on the level of our yamim tovim.

HALLEL AND CHANUKAH The Hallel of Chanukah is cherished and significant. We do not even recite the entire Hallel on the later days of Pesach, but on Chanukah we do, which is why the Ben Ish Chai suggests saying Hallel on Chanukah with much concentration — slowly, joyously, and in a pleasant tone of voice. The Maharshal was asked: If a man in prison is given the opportunity to perform only one mitzvah on Chanukah, should he light the menorah or daven Shacharis with Hallel? He replied that the Yid should daven, as a heartfelt tefillah of hoda’ah is preferable to lighting the menorah. Hallel and simcha go hand in hand. The Rambam says that because Chanukah was established as a time for hallel and hoda’ah, these days inevitably become days of joy. Through praise, one reaches joy; and through joy, one reaches praise.

Dovid Hamelech and Hallel are intertwined, a man and his song as one.

STIRRING SONG A story is told of a talmid of the Arugas Habosem (Rav Moshe Greenwald, 1853–1910) who decided that he’d had enough of yeshivah. He soon made plans to attend university in Germany, but knowing that his Rosh Yeshivah would be pained by this decision, he decided to go about it discreetly. He left yeshivah at the end of the zman without saying goodbye, and rather than return for the new zman, traveled straight to Germany. During his travels, he stopped in a beis midrash to daven Shacharis. It was Rosh Chodesh, and at the end of Hallel, as he said “Yehallelucha,” he suddenly heard the “Yehallelucha” of his Rebbe, the Arugas Habosem, ringing in his ears. He heard the heartfelt emotion that his Rebbe would infuse in these words, and he began to cry. Where am I going?! I’m leaving the mekor mayim chaim to drink from sullied waters! The talmid got back on the train and returned to Chust where he continued to learn, growing up to be a well-known talmid chacham and rav.

FOR HIM AND FOR US Hallel is a world of its own, and each one of us has the ability to enter its sphere and draw all the chizuk we need. The word hallel is a reflexive verb, which hints at the objective of Hallel —to identify the source of bracha in our lives — be it health, talents, family and more — and attribute it back to the Source. In Hallel, we acknowledge that all of our gifts come from Hashem. Of course, Hakadosh Baruch Hu is omnipotent, omniscient. Our words of praise do not affect Him, for He lacks nothing. Yet we sing His praises for we wish to become elevated through them. Thus, Hallel purifies the Yid, drawing him closer to Hashem and showering him with an outpouring of good. Through Hallel we can attain great joy, an abundance of blessing and yeshuos; when one notices and thanks Hashem for the chesed around him, he opens the pipeline for continued chasadim. Every challenge — spiritual or material — can be wiped away through the shining light of Hallel and hoda’ah.

THE GREATNESS OF A YID Three times in Hallel, Yidden are described in three categories, and the Malbim explains each level.

BEIS YISROEL refers to Yidden with simple faith in Hashem. Living with rock-solid belief is a great spiritual level. BEIS AHARON is even higher. Being a Kohen is a birthright, but this denotes a spiritual state that is open to anyone who serves Hashem out of love and intense desire to do His will. YEREI HASHEM are Yidden whose love of Hashem is so strong that they fear doing anything that may place a barrier between them and Hashem. This is the ultimate level.

IN ROYAL MELODY Dovid Hamelech and Hallel are intertwined, a man and his song as one. Dovid Hamelech, the ne’im zemiros Yisroel, is likened to the peh — the mouth — of Klal Yisroel. Every time a Yid sings shirah, Dovid sings along with him, opening the Yid’s heart and mind to be able to sing to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. While this is true every day of the year, the Sfas Emes says that Chanukah is an especially auspicious time in this regard. Throughout these eight days, Dovid Hamelech helps every individual in Klal Yisroel be able to sing. He empowers our hearts to fill up until they overflow with gratitude. According to Reb Tzvi Meir Silberberg, shlit”a, when we enter the world of Hallel on the days established by Chazal, Dovid Hamelech and the other tzaddikim who introduced these words come down to this world and elevate us to the point that we should indeed be able to praise the name of Hashem. “Hallelu, hallelu,” they guide us.

ETERNAL SONG The true power of praise is reserved for the Beis Hamikdash, as it says, “V’sham nashir shir chadash.” In galus, says Reb Tzvi Meir Silberberg, shlit”a, it is hard to thank Hashem properly, but on those days designated for hallel and hoda’ah — especially during the lofty days of Chanukah — we are in the bechinah of the Beis Hamikdash. May we merit seeing the oro shel Moshiach — the long-awaited glorious days when we will finally be able to offer our truest, deepest songs of praise.

Winters are long. And winters with a double Adar are somehow doubly long. Because as much as we look forward to routine, too much of a good thing is just… too much. However, Hashem created his world with his’chadshus inherent in nature. There are yomim tovim, changes of season and… Rosh Chodesh! Each month, the moon teaches us about renewal and change. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, Rosh Chodesh was a time of great celebration, with fires and singing and rejoicing. While Rosh Chodesh nowadays looks vastly different, it is still a significant day, especially for women, who have a special connection to this day as a reward for not partaking in the chet ha’egel. Absolved of some of our domestic responsibilities, it is a day we can transform into something truly memorable. To be very honest, however, some Rosh Chodesh days catch me by surprise. Those are the days that I’m busy switching the kids out of uniform shirts and into their white ones just as the bus is pulling up. Those are also the days that I industriously get out my sewing machine to tackle the mending pile. And trim nails. And trim overgrown bangs. Only to remember, Hey, it’s Rosh Chodesh. Which isn’t so bad because it guilts me into preparing a lavish supper. But, baruch Hashem, I can count on my friend Chevy to curb my guilt. Because when I asked her how she celebrates Rosh Chodesh, she responded, “When my kids go to sleep, I decorate my house with decorations for that month. First thing in the morning, we all sing Hallel together, and then we have a special breakfast with the theme of that month. Snacks are also themed, and when the kids come home from school, we bake cookies!” I listen awestruck, dumbstruck and even a bit envious. Then she continues, “NOT! NOT! NOT! I’m glad if I remember to put on their white shirts.” No guilt there!

Of course, our intention is to remember and celebrate this special day, and very many in our community do! Many women try to get in extra Tehillim on Rosh Chodesh, and the Ribnitzer tziyun in Monsey sees countless visitors on Erev Rosh Chodesh who come to daven for a chodesh full of bracha. Here are some more beautiful ideas and Rosh Chodesh memories women shared.

Chaya:

Blimy:

Chumy:

Rosh Chodesh is my special day. I love writing and I love adult company — two things I hardly have time for. Every Rosh Chodesh, a group of us like-minded women get together. With some sweets on the table and an interesting writing prompt, we’re back in “school,” enjoying a writing class. For me, it’s enough selfcare to tide me over until the next Rosh Chodesh.

I try to wrap little treats to include in my kids’ snacks, and I insert a short note wishing them ah gutten chodesh with some personal message. I often see them rummaging in their backpacks on Rosh Chodesh mornings to get a little hint of what’s coming.

I’m a teacher, and on Rosh Chodesh our school positively pulsates with joy. The Rosh Chodesh programs are so inspiring. The girls are given extracurricular activities, and it truly imbues the month with spirit. I try to bring that inspiration home with me. Sometimes it’s with dancing, sometimes baking and other times crafting.

Yita: It’s chart reward time! All month long we have bedtime charts, wakeup charts, no-fighting charts, mevater charts. Of course, the charts change along with the needs. On Rosh Chodesh, I offer treats, prizes and privileges that the kids can buy with the points they’ve accumulated! It’s an incredible incentive, and the family really looks forward to Rosh Chodesh.

Dinah: At the beginning of COVID-19, my husband davened at home, and on Rosh Chodesh, he danced with the kids as they sang Hallel together. It remains a special memory of that wacky time.

Esty: I used to buy many weekly magazines for Shabbos, but at a certain point we felt that it depreciated the value of Shabbos, because many articles don’t seem to be in the spirit of Shabbos. We calculated the monthly cost of the magazines, and on Rosh Chodesh, each age group in the family gets a new book for the same price. It’s a real treat and way more long-lasting too!

Bruchy: Rosh Chodesh is my monthly appreciation day. I bake something special or put something together and send a little package to my children’s teachers and rebbe’im. It goes a long way toward building a nice relationship —and I get to eat the extras as my own Rosh Chodesh treat!

Gitty:

Every Rosh Chodesh I prepare a special supper and dessert done by the children for the children. We usually have a bunch of pizza doughs that the kids can top as they please. For dessert we have an ice cream bar with a display of different toppings, or cookies with frostings and toppings.

My grandmother lives overseas and it’s easy to forget to make those phone calls. It became our family tradition to call Bubby on Rosh Chodesh. And whoever speaks to Bubby nicely gets rewarded with a Rosh Chodesh treat!

Perry: I try to make the atmosphere in the house yom tov’dig. Breakfast is Shabbos cereal, and I let my girls wear their jewelry to school.

Toby: We’re a bunch of sisters, and we hardly get together without the kids. On Rosh Chodesh, we have a family Rosh Chodesh breakfast at our mother’s house with a delicious spread. It starts off with our singing Hallel together, and it ends with bentching and Yaaleh V’yavo. The breakfast ends only because the school buses are on the way home, because there’s always such a beautiful atmosphere and it’s such wonderful kibbud eim.

Devorah: Ah! Rosh Chodesh is the best. My mother never washed laundry on Rosh Chodesh, and you can bet this is one part of our mesorah I keep! I do laundry every — single — day besides Rosh Chodesh.

However we mark the day, may we all be gebentched with months of shefa and bracha, and may we be zoche to witness a true Rosh Chodesh soon in Yerushalayim, amen! 118

We made a strange sight, the three of us. My two eldest daughters and I stood on our front lawn, darkness thick and inky around us, heads tilted up to the sky. The night was thick and cloudy; the whisper of winter was on the way. This was so not the time to be outside, on this chilly Motzei Shabbos. Snuggling on the couch in fluffy slippers or eating a hearty melaveh malkah would definitely be more like it. But. It was the second-to-last night when Kiddush Levanah could be made, and we were here on a mission for the menfolk: to find the moon. This was harder than it sounds, considering the murky, moonless sky. My husband kept getting messages and calls. It had been cloudy for days, and it seemed that we weren’t the only ones searching desperately for the moon. My husband and son kept joining us outside to peer hopefully at the sky, but to no avail. We women, however, would simply not give up. We stood stubbornly on our front lawn, heads craned upward, as if that alone would bring out the moon. But the sky remained silent and covered in clouds. Even though we looked so very strange standing outside, and even though I had so much work waiting for me in the kitchen, we just couldn’t go inside. After some more silent searching, I was ready to turn around and head back indoors to the light that beckoned. But that’s when I heard my daughter muttering. “Please, Hashem. Please show us the moon.” Her face was lit up by the eerie light of the streetlamps, the shadows thrown around her in sharp relief. “Please, Hashem. Please?” And suddenly, what had seemed impossible a moment ago was not so unlikely anymore, and I lifted my own face up to the sky, certain that I’d see a flash of yellow between the clouds. And even when we went inside moments later, the sky still dark and the clouds impenetrable, I knew the men would still make Kiddush Levanah that very night. SOON ONE HOUR PASSED, and then another, as I washed and dried and sorted. The door kept opening and closing. We hadn’t given up yet, but it was getting late, and

still, no moon. Please, Tatte? I went upstairs and down, clearing the toys away, planning the new week. A moon, please! I heard the deep voices of my father-in-law and husband, wondering, waiting, watching. A cousin knocked on the front door and joined them. He, too, needed a moon. Please? And suddenly, just when we thought it would never come, there it was — — the moon! a bright burst of light in the darkness. Men were pouring out of their houses — “The moon! It’s here! Quick!” — and light spilled into the street from the open doorways. Our quiet, nondescript street was all but quivering with excitement. The moon! It had come! The men all said the bracha with such feeling, certain the precious moon would slip into the cover of darkness at any moment. This was a moment so beautiful, it even warranted me halting my Motzei Shabbos craziness for a few moments to watch. The bracha on the moon; the age-old segulah for life. Thank You! The moment seemed surreal, and the men linked hands to dance in a spontaneous outpouring of joy. Their voices filled the darkness as they stomped around, young and old, all united in fulfilling the mitzvah. The moon did disappear after that, just as we returned inside to our cleaning and planning and eating. The next night again it refused to appear, and my husband heard of people driving for hours in search of the elusive moon. But for a few moments on that Motzei Shabbos, we saw the power of tefillah. We felt the love of our Father, and we basked in the moonlight.

Fill-in-the-blanks stories always make a really fun game for a crowd. One person with the story asks participants — who don’t get to see the story before it’s all filled in — to contribute specific words, one at a time. The ludicrous story that emerges is then read aloud, and is sure to elicit laughter and amusement from the participants! These fill-in stories were prepared for family Chanukah gatherings, but if you’d like to use them for other get-togethers, the “family member” blanks can be changed to a classmate or whoever the group of partiers are.

The original trademark game, Mad Libs, was invented by a pair of friends back in 1953, when Richard Price teased his friend Leonard Stern by giving him random adjectives without knowing what Stern was trying to describe. Stern was writing a book and had gotten stuck on a description (he was trying to describe his character’s nose, if you wish to know!), and Price’s contribution of “clumsy” turned into a comic moment for them. That’s when these two creative minds knew they were onto something with potential for loads of fun. They took their idea to a publisher, who suggested they see a game manufacturer, who suggested they see a book publisher, and so it went until they decided to publish their book on their own, and it soon became a national favorite game.

“When my son reached marriageable age different suggestions were made for him, but all were girls who wanted to wear a wig. My son was obstinate about it and he insisted on a girl who would wear a kerchief. I was beyond myself. I told a friend of mine about this and he advised me to go to Bnei Brak and hear the opinion of the Steipler on the matter. I listened to his advice and went in to the Steipler. I gave him a note on which I had written my question. The Goan began reading my question and request as it was written on my note and responded with a shout: “What?! They will say that the Steipler allowed a wig!!!” He gave me a bracha and bid me farewell. A few weeks later my son got engaged to a girl who agreed to cover her hair only with a kerchief without any additions of a wig, and they merited to build a true Jewish home with assistance from above with the strength of the bracha of the Tzaddik.” - Yaakov Blau, Yerushalayim

There are an estimated 300,000-plus craters on the moon. These craters are formed when asteroids and comets crash into the moon. The temperature of the moon is extreme, ranging from somewhere around -275 degrees to 248 degrees Fahrenheit! So how did Neil Armstrong and those after him walk on the moon without forfeiting their lives? They made sure to visit when the temperature was less extreme, and they wore unique spacesuits developed by scientists that allowed the astronauts to maintain a healthy body temperature despite the brutal surroundings. Ever

heard of the “far side of the moon”? That term is used to refer to the side of the moon that faces away from Earth, while the “near side” is the side closest to Earth.

The gravitational attraction between Earth and the moon affects the oceans, resulting in high tides and low tides. People once associated the effects of the moon with mental insanity, hence the similarity between the terms “lunar” and “lunacy.”

Despite the fact that America was first to land on the moon and plant its flag on the surface, no country can claim the moon as their own. According to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, the moon and space are considered the “province of all mankind.”

How big is the moon in comparison to Earth? You can get a good idea of the size difference by putting a green pea next to a nickel.

Though we’re familiar with one moon because it’s the one we see and the only one that orbits Earth, there are actually around 200 known moons in the solar system.

Don’t we all want to be ehrlich? Don’t we all want to do the Will of Hashem without loopholes? Recently, much research has been done by many Rabbonim who discovered that the tonsuring in the temples in India is definitely done as a korban (offering) to their idol. See some of the myriad proofs. To receive more information, called the “The Meaning Behind Tonsuring,” or to request a presentation, “Uncovering the Truth,” send an email to: AZinwigs@gmail.com.

For nearly a decade, it was the court case at the forefront of every Jew’s mind. It was what kept Klal Yisrael’s insides churning, and our heartfelt tefillos going strong. It’s the story of Sholom Rubashkin, and it has never been told so intimately and on such a personal level—until now. By Getzel Rubashkin.

Is the hair of my shaitel kosher l’mehadrin min hamehadrin

or is it a serious issur of tikroves avoda zara?

“Another little fellow has his hair matted in long filthy locks all over his head. Why is he not shaved like the rest? His parents had made a vow to present his hair as an offering to the god at Tirupathy. And hence, it is not cut or combed. At the next annual festival, he will ask for leave of absence, to go and present his locks to the god in his temple. (Life in India, p. 153, pub. 1855)

“Every year thousands of people who visit the temple get tonsured to offer their hair to Lord Venk..., in keeping with the centuries-old tradition. Pilgrims to Tirumala usually offer the hair on their head to the Lord as a devotional offering. Persons in need of the assistance of the Lord usually take a vow and when they visit the temple, offer their hair at the Kalyana Katta – special hall erected for this purpose. It is believed that hair offering establishes a bond between the man and the deity to whom it is offered.” (Tirumala Temple, p 172-173)

‫צלם‬

Tonsuring is called mutikanikkai in Tamil, an official language of India.

mutikanikkai, an offering of the hair of the head shaved off and presented to an idol in fulfilment of a vow. (Tamil -English Dictionary online)

Barber cutting hair in the tonsuring hall as an offering to the idol. See huge picture of idol.

Remember, the mitzvah of Chanuka is only 8 days a year. The mitzvah of kisui rosh is 365 days a year. At this time, when the Chashmonaim cleaned out the Bais Hamikdash of all tumah and avoda zara, as we say in Al Hanissim, “‫ ”ופינו את היכליך וטהרו את מקדשיך‬what better time is there to clean our houses from all types of avoda zara and tumah and Indian temple human hair shaitels and make a ‫ קבלה‬on Chanuka to be ‫ מקיים מצות כיסוי ראש‬with synthetic shaitels that the hair is kosher l’mehadrin min hamehadrin, 100% free of any question of tikroves avoda zara? This will definitely be a huge zchus to have children who grow up to be talmidei chachamin, saturated with yiras Shomayim, who will strive to do the will of Hashem l’mehadrin min hamehadrin. Recently, it was verified that the hair industry is full of fraud. Most hair in the world comes from the temples of India. Even the socalled Brazilian or European is really Indian temple hair that is relabeled, and is therefore forbidden as Tikroves Avoda Zara. Many Rabbonim and ‫ בני תורה‬are taking this issue very seriously. (Some Rabbonim are not yet familiar with all the details.)

Every time you wear a shaitel of ‫תקרובת עבודה זרה‬,

you transgress tWo ‫!לאוין דאורייתא‬

this is something very frightening.

So whaT iS The SoLuTion? There are many good quality 100% synthetic wigs on the market today that are free of any suspicion of idol worship, i.e. Rosé, Noriko, Syntastic, Natureal, Wonder, etc. Speak to your shaitel macher. Many ehrliche women have already recently switched to synthetic.
