(Re: Parsha, Issue 111) I wanted to write to you about the Chanukah article that appeared in the past issue about the zeal the Chasmonaim displayed. It was a truly beautiful thought, and I loved reading about the pintele Yid in all of us and how deep down we all are yearning for Hashem and His truth. Thanks for your amazing magazine. The Impostor was so sad, but I was also sad to see this riveting story end. G.L.

(Re: The Impostor) Reading The Impostor was a true eye-opener for me. It was a great springboard for discussion with my husband weekly, and I truly felt like I was living the experience. I was so engrossed in the plot — and it challenged me to reflect whether I would be able to rise to the occasion amid all the chaos and noise. I feel like reading the book all over again! I also want to know if the story is true, and not just historical fiction. What a talented author! I would love to see more of his masterpieces Inspired THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: The Impostor is historical fiction. However, while the conversations may have not taken place verbatim, the main events of the story did, in fact, happen. Shabbesai Tzvi, indeed, was a false Moshiach who was a stumbling block to the Yidden, causing many to sin in horrific ways, even to the point where some went so far as to abandon the faith of their forefathers. Ultimately, Shabbesai Tzvi did convert to Islam, choosing to accept a foreign religion over Yiddishkeit. There exists, to this day, a small heretical community of his followers who were tragically lost to the Jewish people. Rabbi Reinman (writing under the name Avner Gold) has a

DIZZIED BY THE DOOZY

(Re: Boggle, Issue 111) This week was a doozy — simply put, it had too many words. The game loses the fun aspect when you have several columns of four-letter words. In addition, the board contains two nine-letter words: moonlight and nightmare. I’m sure you had moonlight in mind, as per your theme of the week, but both are correct. Thanks! R.S.

MIRACULOUS, INDEED

(Re: Zeida, Issue 110) This is a postscript to the article about my Zeida’s experiences during the Korean War. A relative who read the article told me that it wasn’t actually a miracle that enabled my grandfather to dig a trench five minutes before Shabbos; it was his comrades who helped him dig that hole. For those who feel the same, I want to point out that this was actually a “miracle” in and of itself, as these were non-Jewish soldiers who had all come to greatly respect my grandfather during his time in the army — to the point where they were willing to delay protocol and help him dig his hole before digging their own trenches in this new terrain. A GRAND TIME WAS HAD

(Re: Chanukah Land, Issue 109) Thanks so much for the instructions for the wonderful game Chanukah Land. My family enjoyed it immensely, and we played for close to two hours. It was geared to all ages, and we had a grand time! Family Weiss

YOUR VOICE DOUGHNUTS AND TIPPING

The prevalent theme of Chanukah has become doughnuts: custard- or jelly-filled; caramel, chocolate, multi-colored, or covered in powdered sugar; sprinkled, layered, homemade or store-bought; doubledecker, dairy, pareve… the variations are endless. It has become so popular that nowadays the bakery section in any given supermarket is far more congested than the area selling menorah supplies. In my opinion, tipping with doughnuts is inappropriate and should be avoided. Without getting overly personal, I received a box of exquisitely elaborate doughnuts, which had no purpose in my home, and I promptly handed them off to a “doughnut appreciative” family. The very next day I received a single doughnut in its plastic container (thank you, but once again handed off) and a few (thank you!) dollar bills. Had we had the ability to barter the doughnuts for a gift certificate in a seforim store, it would have been an amazing gift! When gifting an almost stranger, it’s almost impossible to match the gift to the recipient. While the giver most certainly means well, I think most folks will agree that the best gift is either monetary or an opportunity for the recipient to choose their own gift. Purim is not that far off, and for anyone planning to gift with elaborate cupcakes, thank you, but… please keep the above in mind. “Doughnut” print my name, please

PARSHAS VAYISHLACH Basking in Their Brachos

Who was Reb Eliezer? Within the walls of Ponevezh, everyone knew Reb Eliezer. He was a great masmid whose presence graced the beis midrash day and night. A talmid of Kelm who had escaped Europe, Reb Eliezer was an unknown gadol, always masking his greatness lest those around him perceive it. Every Shabbos, he would learn the entirety of the masechtos of Shabbos and Eruvin by heart. Additionally, he never slept in a bed. Instead, he would sit on his bed and learn, resting his forehead from time to time on his cane. He would drift off for an hour here or there and then quickly return to his learning. Only as an older man, when bachurim in the yeshivah offered to help lift his legs so he could lie on his bed, did he share, “I don’t have time to sleep in bed. When one lies down in bed, his sleep is long and deep. I don’t have time to sleep that much. But when I sleep on my cane, I know I will sleep exactly the amount that my body truly needs.” He was a fixed piece of “furnishing” in the yeshivah, and indeed, his presence lent utter protection to Ponevezh. Amazingly, in all the years when Reb Eliezer sat on the benches of Yeshivas Ponovezh, there was never a need for fire insurance. Just one week after his passing, true to the Chazon Ish’s prophetic words, a fire broke out in the yeshivah building. The bracha that we merit in the zechus of a tzaddik’s presence has an expiration date: His influence leaves along with him.

When Yaakov met Pharaoh, the first question Pharaoh asked was, “How old are you?” Yaakov replied that he was 130 years old and that his life had been miserable. He then added that his years had not yet reached those of his ancestors. This conversation seems puzzling. What business did Pharaoh have asking an old man his age, and why did Yaakov reply in such detail? WHEN RAV YOSEF SHLOMO Kahaneman dreamed of reopening the Yeshivah of Ponevezh, Lithuania, in Bnei Brak, people thought he had lost it. To everyone’s surprise, his was not a delusion, but a vision. Amid the rubble of a family and kehillah lost in the inferno of Europe, the Ponevezh Rosh Yeshivah began to build. At a time when the public thought there was no future for a real yeshivah, he toiled to set up a Torah center for Klal Yisroel — without worrying about logistical calculations. (And indeed, much of the yeshivah world in Eretz Yisroel today could be credited to his early efforts.) One day, the Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh went in to the Chazon Ish. Insurance had become a popular topic of discussion, and the Rosh Yeshivah wished to know whether the yeshivah should take out a fire insurance policy. “Does insuring the yeshivah fall within the range of standard hishtadlus? Or, would it be considered a lack of bitachon on my part?” The Chazon Ish’s reply was concise and clear. “So long as Reb Eliezer is in the yeshivah, there is no need for insurance. The yeshivah is covered in his zechus.”

* * * * * The above phenomenon clarifies the conversation between Pharaoh and Yaakov, according to the Kli Yakar. When Yaakov arrived in Mitzrayim, the Nile immediately rose, signifying the end to the famine that had begun just two years earlier, despite having been slated for seven entire years. It was clear that the overflow was related to Yaakov’s presence. Pharaoh feared that once Yakov would pass on, the blessing would cease and the years of famine would resume. When he saw Yakov’s elderly appearance, he worried that this may hap-

pen too soon. He asked Yaakov his age, trying to estimate how many years he could expect to benefit from the blessing before the tzaddik would depart. Yaakov understood Pharaoh’s intentions. He replied with his age, but added details to imply that there was still time. Pharaoh could remain calm. Yaakov said that he was only 130 years, but looked older because his years were difficult. He made sure to mention that he was nowhere near the age of his parents, because typically, a person does not imagine that his days are numbered until he reaches the age at which his parents passed on. Pharaoh then asked for a bracha, and Yaakov wished him that the Nile should overflow again, irrigating the Land of Mitzrayim to the level it had been before the famine. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Did You Know? The giant Og was sitting on a throne near Pharaoh when Yosef introduced Yaakov. Pharaoh and Og argued over whether Yaakov could, in fact, be a descendant of Avraham, as they believed Avraham had remained childless. Yaakov, in his aging state, looked very much like Avraham Avinu himself. But when Yakov shared with Pharaoh that his days had not been filled with the happiness that his forefathers had merited, Pharaoh and Og knew that he was not Avraham.

De Blasio Takes on Private Sector in Final Days, Ordering Vaccination Mandates in Businesses and Nonpublic Schools With just days left before he leaves office, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced sweeping vaccination mandates that cover all workers in the private sector, as well as teachers and staff in all of New York City’s 938 private schools. The mayor stunned New Yorkers on Monday morning as he announced that all private sector employees would be required to have two doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson shot as of December 20. The move affects approximately 184,000 businesses in the five boroughs. The private sector mandate is the first in the nation, and the mayor said that additional enforcement and reasonable accommodation guidelines would be released on December 15, reported NBC New York. De Blasio acknowledged that there could be consequences for noncompliant businesses, but said that, historically, few have been penalized so far. Also included in the de Blasio bombshell was a requirement for children ages five to eleven to have completed at least one vaccine in order to be admitted into any indoor eateries and fitness or entertainment centers as of December 14. City health commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi explained that infection rates have been increasing steadily, particularly in five- to elevenyear-olds, and with the advent of the Omicron variant and the colder weather keeping people indoors, the risk of transmission is only increasing. “New York City has led the nation when it comes to decisive action on COVID-19,” said Chokshi. “We have to be even more relentless than the virus.” The surprise announcement came four days after de Blasio decreed that all private school teachers and staff must be vaccinated by December 20, including those who work at yeshivos and Catholic schools. The move affects approximately 56,000 staffers citywide, reported Hamodia. Yeshiva and Catholic school leaders had been given advance warning of the mandate in separate phone calls with de Blasio and Chokshi. One person who took part in the conference call said that while everyone understood concerns about Omicron, it was disappointing that there was no discussion about other ways to boost safety in schools, including instituting weekly COVID-19 testing for school staff. “The mayor essentially repeated about how we have to be careful about Omicron, and general scaremongering, but did not give any substantive response,” said one participant. “I appreciate the fact that the mayor gave us a heads-up, but it was clear that it was a fait accompli,” added another. “He was not there to negotiate whether the city should impose such a mandate. The city was going to impose such a mandate, period.” A letter written by Agudah executive vice president Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, in his capacity as chairman of the Committee of the NYC Religious and Independent School Officials, 50

came out strongly against the mandate. The committee represents Jewish, Catholic, Islamic, Greek Orthodox, Lutheran, Adventist and historically Black independent schools and approximately 250,000 school children. “This is an area where government should be using its bully pulpit to persuade, not its regulatory arm to coerce,” wrote Rabbi Zwiebel. Rabbi Zwiebel also noted that while public schools had the option of moving unvaccinated teachers to other positions or placing them on leave, private institutions have no such abilities and could be forced to fire teachers at a time when finding highquality staff has already proven to be difficult. That reality could create a potentially impossible situation that could leave some schools with no option other than to close their doors mid-year, as the city tries to limit the spread of Omicron. “There are ways to try to move to that goal short of a mandate, ways that will not interfere with the value of personal choice and will not risk the wholesale loss of teachers and other school employees,” wrote Rabbi Zwiebel. “The religious and independent school community respectfully urged you to reconsider.” A spokesperson for Mayor-elect Eric Adams said that the new mandates will be evaluated once he takes office on January 1, with decisions to be made based on “science, efficacy and the advice of health professionals.” The latest news sparked a fresh round of outrage from elected officials. “The mayor does not have the legal authority to issue any such mandates,” said City Councilman Kalman Yeger. “I don’t know why he thinks this is a good use of his last three weeks in office, but it isn’t.” City Councilmember Inna Vernikov denounced de Blasio as well, describing him as a lame duck mayor who is abusing his authority. “It was private schools last week, and now it’s private businesses,” said Vernikov. “Our mayor doesn’t seem to understand what the word ‘private’ means.” Vernikov said that 89% of all adult New Yorkers are vaccinated and the remainder have clearly made their own decisions about the vaccination. “That is their right as Americans, and Mayor de Blasio has no business challenging people’s right to make their own health care choice,” said Vernikov.

As Omicron Arrives, Federal and State Officials Say Keep Masking With the Omicron COVID-19 variant rearing its ugly head in the United States, those hoping to see masks fade away are having their hopes dashed once again. President Joe Biden announced last Thursday that he would be extending the Transportation Security Administration’s mask mandate for travelers through March 18, reported USA

Today. That move will require those using planes, trains and buses to continue masking up and will also have anyone entering the country by air to test negative for COVID-19 within one day of their departure, instead of the three-day rule that had been in effect until now. “My plan … pulls no punches in the fight against COVID-19,” said Biden. Those who refuse to comply with the mandate will be slapped with heavy fines — a minimum of $500 for a first offense and as much as $3,000 for repeat offenders. Children under two and people with certain disabilities are exempt from the mandate. Governor Kathy Hochul didn’t go quite as far as Biden as she urged New Yorkers to don masks in indoor public settings. She stopped short of an actual mask mandate and said that she wasn’t planning on launching new restrictions at this time, though she did praise recent announcements by Erie County officials who warned that vaccine requirements for indoor dining may be implemented if infections rates continue to rise locally. New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi also voiced his strong recommendation for masking in places such as stores, supermarkets and other indoor settings.

Elderly Couple Sues Airline for Insisting Tallis Bag Be Placed on Floor A husband and wife who were thrown off an airplane for refusing to stow a tallis bag on the floor are taking the matter to court, suing American Airlines for unspecified damages. The New York Post reported that the incident took place in August on a flight from Miami to New York. Seventy-six-yearold Roberto Birman of Brooklyn and his seventy-one-year-old wife Elana were sitting in aisle seats across from each other when a flight attendant checking overhead bins prior to takeoff pulled out a tallis bag and asked passengers to identify its owner. When Birman said it was his, the flight attendant allegedly threw the bag onto his lap and told him it had to be placed underneath the seat in front of him. Explanations that, as a religious item, it could not go on the floor fell on deaf ears, and a member of the airline’s ground crew who was called in urged the Birmans to follow him off the plane. According to the Birmans, the minute they got off the plane, the flight crew was told to close the gate, and the plane took off with their luggage on board, leaving them stranded in the airport with a hurricane looming. American Airlines allegedly did nothing to help the couple find food or lodging, and the Birmans recalled feeling embarrassed and outraged. “I couldn’t believe this was happening to me in America,” said Roberto, who had carried just his tallis bag and a briefcase

on board and was left without his diabetes medication when the plane took off. The couple came to America in 1985, leaving their native Argentina because of rampant anti-Semitism. Recalling the flight’s attendant angry tirade and how the pilot said and did nothing as he surveyed the scene, Elana Birman recalled feeling that they were being treated like criminals. A spokesperson for American Airlines said that it was reviewing the lawsuit. Attorney Brad Gerstman, who is representing the Birmans, described the event as both offensive and illogical. “My clients were ejected from the flight based on the prejudices and complete lack of sensitivity of American Airlines employees for reasons wholly unrelated to security,” said Gerstman.

Citing Reports of Hoods Popping Open, Honda Recalls Nearly 800K Vehicles Worldwide Owners of two popular Honda SUVs are among those being told to schedule a no-cost repair appointment because of a defect that could have their vehicles’ front hoods popping open while traveling at high speeds. CBS News reported that the problem stems from a faulty hood latch striker in some 2019 Passports and 2016 to 2019 Pilots, as well some 2017 to 2020 Ridgeline pickups. A notice posted by Honda explained that gaps in the front seal between the hood and the grill allow air to enter, which could cause the hood to vibrate. Over time, that movement could cause the hood latch to separate from its mounting, creating the potential for the hood to pop open while driving at highway speeds, blocking the driver’s view of the road. Honda warned that drivers who notice that their hoods feel loose or that they vibrate at high speeds should exercise extra caution. Nearly 789,000 vehicles are affected worldwide, including more than 725,000 in the United States. Honda will begin notifying owners of the issue by mail as of January 17, and appointments can be made for a free repair at any Honda dealer by calling 888-234-2138.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE RECAP: Osher

thinks he spots Ariella in Acco, but then dismisses the thought. Ariella, having a good feeling about Osher’s yeshivah, wonders if she should return to Bnei Brak or settle elsewhere. Aliza offers to teach Ariella how to bead jewelry to help her become more organized.

T

he small night light cast a soft, yellow glow, but the floor of the room was completely black in the darkness. Ariella ignored the dark; she’d never been particularly afraid of it. On the contrary; it helped her conjure up lots of magical ideas, interesting thoughts, and countless imaginary scenes. She tossed her soft slippers into a corner and walked barefoot around the room, creating a figure eight as she paced. Numerous studies showed that doing so helped with a lot of things — she’d read that once. On a chair near the bed was the necklace she had created under Aliza’s tutelage. She couldn’t see it clearly, but its large green stones reflected some of the yellow rays of the night light and emitted an odd, greenish glow. The stones were strange; she didn’t think she’d ever wear this necklace, even if it would match one of her outfits. But Aliza hadn’t let her choose. Besides, there hadn’t really been anything better to choose from. Aliza’s stones were mostly too large, too colorful, too lumpy, or in colors that were too bold for Ariella’s taste. She was happy here. The freedom was refreshing, and it was helping her air out; it eased the weight that had been resting on her shoulders in recent months. Sometimes she felt like she didn’t know what she wanted anymore, but it was Aliza who had caused her to actually lay things out on the table, between her stones and threads and beads. That had been good.

Eight. And another eight. And another one. How many times had she walked this figure eight? Eleven? Eleven strange green stones in a strange-looking necklace. And a strange woman. Pitiable and strange. Ariella froze in the middle of her twelfth eight. Pitiable. Strange. No, she would not bring those words here, too. Not now! Not in the middle of the night! But the words had already filled her up, and she submitted herself to them as she stood frozen in the middle of the room…

The room back then resembled this one in some ways. It also contained a rather high bed, like the one here, and underneath it was a high-riser. It was a comfortable bed, she knew. She’d slept in it a few times since her wedding. But then she hadn’t been sitting on the bed. She was sitting on a low chair across the room, and a row of women sat on the bed, or on plastic chairs along the walls. “He was an angel,” Nosson’s mother kept repeating, tearing up every time. “An angel. I have no other way to put it.” Ariella herself hadn’t said a word. Actually, she’d spoken a bit on the first day, and on the second day, too. But by the third day she felt like she just couldn’t talk anymore. The words were distant from her, and that choked feeling in her throat didn’t let her utter even a sound. Brachi, Nosson’s five-year-old sister, had been sitting on the floor next to her, playing with a ruler that also had some cut-out shapes to trace. “Look,” she’d said suddenly. “If we make a square, and a triangle on top of it, and small rectangles inside, it could be a house, right?” Ariella had stared at her for a moment, and then nodded, with effort. Her own mother wasn’t there right then. She had been at the Rothman home for the first three days of the shivah, from morning until late at night. But before her mother had returned to Bnei Brak the night before, Ariella had asked her not to exert herself the next day. Her mother had tried to argue — “What do you mean? It’s my place to be at your side now…” — but she truly had been drained. She did ask Ariella to promise that if she felt she needed her, she would call and not be embarrassed to say so. But even if Ariella would have wanted to call her mother now, she wouldn’t have been able to utter a word on the phone. So she’d sat silently and listened to the others talk, her eyes traveling along the walls and the ceiling. “He was such a good boy…” Now Nosson’s elderly grandmother was speaking. “He always helped me during bein hazmanim. He went shopping for me, washed my kitchen floor on Friday… He would also organize my sewing box and my medicine chest. I’m sure he helped you at home, too, Ariella.” “Ariella’s a wonderful balabusta herself.” Her motherin-law had looked at her with her red eyes. “I’m sure she didn’t need his help… But he really did help everyone, wherever possible.” “We all remember the way he helped out that family

on the first floor,” one of the neighbors interjected. “It wasn’t something you could forget, Yehudis. And his easygoing nature… and his smile…” “A gift for twenty-two years,” Nosson’s mother said, nearly inaudibly. “Ariella, you got him for such a short time… but it was surely enough for you to feel that it was a real zechus.” Ariella had looked at the ceiling and nodded. Again Brachi tugged at her arm. “Look, it really looks like a house, you see? Except that there’s a space between the triangle and the square. In a regular house there’s no space between the walls and the ceiling.” But if there was sometimes space? And not just space, but a huge, gaping difference between the ground-based walls, stuck into the earth, and the roof that rose, its top reaching the heavens? She was well aware of the fact that her husband had been an angel. She had sensed it from the first minute she’d met him. Maybe, if they would have had more time together, she would have also seen the more grounded side of him. But in the beginning everything is always so beautiful, and there hadn’t even seemed to be any less glowing sides to Nosson to try to hide. Like she had. She wondered what would have happened if she would have been the one sitting on the bus for that trip, and he would have been sitting shivah for her now. First of all, no one would have said she was an angel. Sure, there were lots of good things to say about her, especially if someone was looking to say them. But people wouldn’t have showered her with the same accolades, and especially not the neighbors. As for Nosson himself… she wondered what he would have thought. Would he have remembered the mountain of dishes that he would wash very quickly, with a smile, half an hour before Shabbos? The laundry that he sometimes hung up, because otherwise it would have stayed in the machine for two and a half days and likely gotten moldy? He had only nice things to say to and about her, of course. A woman is not only her home and her dishes and laundry and floors. But sometimes, Ariella felt, those matters take up so much space that they overshadow all of a woman’s other virtues. She rose. She could not continue sitting there. She was no angel, so what could she do if sitting for too long was just not for her? How had she sat like that, unmoving, for the past three days? That was what was surprising. Apparently, emotional shock worked much better than all of those prescription medications. “Come, Brachi, let’s go to the kitchen,” she whispered, suddenly able to muster up her voice from somewhere. “I’ll show you how to put the ruler on a piece of paper so that the walls and roof should be connected.” And meanwhile, I’ll also take my little pill. I didn’t think I’d need it this morning, but I do, and how. “Be back in a minute,” she murmured to her mother-in-law, and with Brachi’s hand tucked into her own, she made her way out of the crowded room. Words hovered there like flies, buzzing and floating and bothering her even if she didn’t understand them all. It was just like fifteen years earlier, when if there was a whisper from a friend on the other side of the classroom, it would completely eradicate her calm state and concentration. In the kitchen, she found a small blue stool and put it near the counter, but not before she’d taken the little package out of her bag. Brachi didn’t notice; her eyes were fixed on her paper. Ariella made a bracha on a cup of water and drank. The water still made her feel like she was choking, like every other liquid she’d tried to swallow these past few days. She sat down on the little stool. “Brachi,” she whispered. “Brachi, do you remember Nosson?”

Apparently, emotional shock worked much better than all of those prescription medications.

“Of course!” Brachi looked at her older sister-in-law with injured eyes. “Just two weeks ago you were here for Shabbos, and then the accident happened! We davened for him in gan the whole time, you know?” “And do you remember him from before we got married?” “Of course!” the girl replied again. “You had a wedding, and I wore a puffy light-blue gown, and I had pretty pearls in my hair…” “Do you remember Nosson from before our wedding? From when he was a bachur?” “Yes, of course,” Brachi replied. But this time her ‘of course’ was more hesitant, and she bent her head back over her page of sketches. “Was he always so… good?” Brachi looked confused for a moment. Then she said, “He picked me up from my morah a lot of times when he came home from yeshivah, and he said that even though he was going to learn Torah, at night, when he went to sleep, he sometimes thought about me and davened that I should do well.” “And sometimes,” Ariella lowered her voice, “did it ever happen… that he wasn’t so good? That he didn’t behave so nicely? That Tatty or Mommy… maybe got a little bit angry at him?” The child shifted her ruler. “Dunno.” She stuck the pen into the square in the ruler. “I don’t think so. He always listened to Tatty and Mommy. Not like Chezky — Tatty sometimes gets angry at him when he goes late to daven and we can’t wake him up. But I think Nosson was always a tzaddik. That’s why Hashem wanted Nosson next to Him, you know? My teacher told that to all of the girls in our class, the day after he was niftar!” Ariella sat with her eyes closed. Silence gripped her on all sides. “Ariella, are you feeling okay?” An unfamiliar voice spoke to her from the doorway. “Your mother-in-law asked me to check up on you. You looked pale when you left the room.” Ariella raised her eyes for a minute, surprised to discover that she was curious to know who was speaking. A woman had to have a big heart, and some courage, to agree to do such a favor. She didn’t deserve to get a biting response, even if, in Ariella’s opinion, noting her paleness was quite foolish and unnecessary. What did they expect — for her to look pink-cheeked and rosy? In any case, the woman was a stranger. “Thanks,” she whispered from her perch on the stool. “I… I’ll be all right, b’ezras Hashem.” “We were just talking about Nosson,” Brachi piped up. “And Ariella asked me if Tatty or Mommy ever got angry at him because he didn’t listen to them, and if he ever didn’t behave like a good boy.” The woman hadn’t actually murmured the words “pitiable… strange.” Ariella had convinced herself of that years ago. But whoever the woman was, she had certainly thought it; it was written all over her face. To be continued…

PAREVE YAPC HIK After much trial and error, I am excited to present this winner of a recipe. I used half Idaho and half Yukon Gold potatoes, and the combination resulted in a fantastic texture.

INGREDIENTS 1 large Vidalia onion 1 lb. baby bella mushrooms, peeled ¼ cup oil 2 T. WonderMills flour 1 tsp. salt 5 lb. potatoes 7 eggs ¾ cup oil ⅓ cup seltzer 1 T. salt ¼ tsp. pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Line a 10x16” pan with parchment paper. 2. Prepare a deep 9x13” pan by lightly greasing it with a small amount of oil. 3. Preheat the oven to 500°. 4. Chop onions and mushrooms into half-inch pieces. Separate the layers of onion and place them in a 10x16” pan along with the mushrooms, oil, flour and salt. Mix well. 5. Fit the food processor with the kugel blade, and grate the potatoes. 6. Combine the potatoes with the remaining ingredients. 7. Pour the kugel into the greased 9x13” pan. Place the kugel on the top rack of the oven, and the vegetables on the lower rack. 8. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring the mushrooms once or twice. 9. Pour the mushrooms over the kugel and mix them in, breaking open the top of the kugel. Mix very well until both the crust and the mushrooms are well distributed. Use a spatula to smooth the top. Bake for an additional 40 minutes. 10. Pour one cup of water over the yapchik, and cover the pan tightly. Lower the oven temperature to 250°, and bake for an additional 5 hours, or on 200° for 8 to 10 hours. Note: Baby bella mushrooms should be used in the following manner: If the cap is completely sealed around the stem, the mushroom doesn’t need to be checked. If there is any gap between the cap and the stem, the gills need to be removed, and the mushroom should be washed very well.

CHOLENT IN THE OVEN So simple to prepare, and no burned pots to wash.

INGREDIENTS You can substitute 1 pound beans of your choice for the other beans in this recipe. 1¼ cups navy beans ¾ cup pinto beans ¾ cup Great Northern beans 2 large onions 3 cloves garlic ¾ cup oil 2 potatoes ¾ cup barley ¼ cup tomato puree 2½ T. kosher salt 2 T. brown sugar 1 tsp. paprika ½ tsp. black pepper 10 cups water (preferably hot)

DIRECTIONS 1. Soak and check the beans using your preferred method. 2. Preheat the oven to 425°. 3. Chop the onion and garlic, and place them in an extra-deep lined 9x13” pan along with the oil. Saute this in the oven for 45 minutes. 4. Add the soaked beans to the onions, and bake for 15 minutes. 5. Cut the potatoes into small cubes, and add them to the pan along with the remaining ingredients. Bake for 1½ hours. 6. Reduce the heat to 250°, and bake for 5 hours, or at 200° for 8 hours. Note: To use a pan to keep the cholent warm on Shabbos, transfer the remaining cholent to a 9x13” pan. Rinse the extra-deep 9x13” pan, and fill it halfway with water. Place the pan with the cholent into the deep pan that has water inside. Cover both of the pans together with foil, and place them on the blech or hot plate.

Down a quiet residential street lies a special treasure: A home in which women and children gather each Friday night to joyfully welcome the Shabbos Queen. Together, they softly sing the ancient words of Lecha Dodi, ushering in the day of rest.

“We have participants of all ages,” Mrs. Aharonson*, the hostess, shares. “From women and teenagers to young girls and babies, everyone in the neighborhood is invited. About a half hour after licht tzinden, we all congregate in my house.” While some send their children on their own, others arrive with the whole family in tow. “My house is not big, but no matter how many people there are, we somehow always have room for everyone,” Mrs. Aharonson says. Perched on couches and chairs, the women and children who’ve gathered together begin the program with a special song composed by Mrs. Aharonson’s neighbor. “Sung to the tune of the Karliner Kah Echsof, the song expresses our yearning to connect to Hashem and His Shabbos.” The group then raises their voices as one, singing the ancient words of Kabbalas Shabbos. When they finish, everyone rises and forms a chain, singing heartwarming Shabbos songs while walking around the room. You can feel the spirit of Shabbos pulsing in the air, Mrs. Aharonson says. “There’s a serenity that overcomes us. It can’t be described. It’s such an uplifting experience.” They conclude the dancing with Ribbono Shel Olam, Helf Shoin Alle Yidden, a song that expresses our yearning for Yom Shekulo Shabbos. “Then we have a chant in which we wish gut Shabbos to every single

person in the room, even the newborn babies,” Mrs. Aharonson tells me. “The little kids really love it; you can see their eyes sparkle as they wait for their name to be said.” A heartfelt kumzitz follows, in which the group holds on to the preciousness of spending the day with Hashem Himself, feeling the power of their ignited neshamah yeseirah. This experience is so powerful that the members of the group never want to miss a Shabbos together. “I once spent Shabbos at my mother’s home, and though it was quite a distance away, the entire group walked over so that we could experience the joy of davening and singing together,” Mrs. Aharonson tells me. “At another time, I came home on a Friday afternoon with a newborn baby, and though my neighbor offered to host our group in her home, I said there was no way I was missing it! We held it in my house as usual — together with my newborn!” “What happens if you’re really tired one week? Do you just plow ahead, or does someone else take over?” I ask. “There’s no such thing as too tired!” Mrs. Aharonson replies. “When someone tells me something like, ‘I’m so tired, I want to plotz into bed,’ I think to myself: This experience is more energizing than a nap! You simply can’t compare the two.”

Tapping into that unique energy — the kind generated by fulfilling a mitzvah b’shleimus — was the goal from the very beginning. “One miraculous day Hashem opened up my eyes and I looked around me and asked, ‘What is going on here? ’We, and our children, are just searching,” Mrs. Aharonson says, “searching for fulfillment, turning to fun to fill an emptiness. But that doesn’t fill a person up. I realized that we have the bones of Yiddishkeit, but not the meat!” She expounds upon the level of kashrus and the intense learning in our community, but also brings up a far-too-common lack of feeling. “Our children are often growing up doing, but not feeling. What should encourage us to run after the mitzvos? What should prod us along to happily toil for Yiddishkeit? The answer is that Hashem created the Torah, and it is alive! If we keep it the right way, we can actually feel the chiyus and the overwhelming excitement in serving Hashem. This joyous experience will keep us and our children from turning to outside fulfillment.” “The outside world infiltrates to such a degree that it has the power to dull the senses that enable one to appreciate the beauty of the Torah. There’s so much gashmius nowadays that

we can easily get lost — even when someone is fortunate to grow up with a living Torah.” The antidote? “Make the Torah come alive!” Mrs. Aharonson says. “The Torah has to be felt. And once you get that feeling, you’re running for it. It’s such a deep, good feeling, that once you experience it, you want to run and do more mitzvos.” Tapping into the power of Torah and mitzvos — really living Yiddishkeit — became Mrs. Aharonson’s personal goal, starting with Shabbos, the mekor habracha. Together with her neighbor, she set up the current program, and they’ve been running it weekly for the past two and a half years. “Rather than seeing their mother crawl into bed Shabbos evening, we decided to start off Shabbos by giving our kids a very Shabbos’dig feeling instead.” Mrs. Aharonson admits that the beginning was a bit difficult. “At first the kids complained; they liked it, but they didn’t want to have it take place every week. But I knew to forge ahead; I knew that this is the best thing I could give them. And then it mushroomed into this beautiful Kabbalas Shabbos!” 78

Once the feelings of inspiration were felt by everyone, they decided to increase their awareness of Hashem’s wonderful Shabbos. “After we kicked off the program, we all wanted to tap into Shabbos even more, so everyone began doing something for Shabbos every day, even if it was just singing a song about loving Shabbos, opening up a bottle for Shabbos, shopping for groceries, baking, etc.” The members of the group also took upon themselves a kabbalah to do something that personally takes them beyond their comfort zone in order to tap into the brachos of Shabbos. “One person took upon herself to wear shoes instead of slippers on Shabbos, another to say ‘l’kavod Shabbos kodesh’ at least one time each seudah, and so on. Anything that made them stretch to show Hashem that they are moser nefesh in order to be m’chabed Shabbos, to say, ‘I want a relationship with You, Hashem, so I’m going to push for it!” Mrs. Aharonson encourages everyone to try to live the mitzvos passionately on a daily basis, thereby arousing our love toward them and Hakadosh Baruch Hu. “When we do this, we realize that this is the happiness our neshamah is truly craving.” We all truly want a relationship with Hashem, don’t we? It’s time to push for it. And sometimes, “pushing” means singing the words of Lecha Dodi — even when the couch is beckoning… Come, fellow Yidden. Let’s greet the Shabbos Queen.

A couple of weeks ago, we hosted a gentleman at our Shabbos table. Before he came, he commented that he wished to see a “different kind of Shabbos seudah.” As we all enjoyed what was for us the typical fish and soup, I wondered if anything at our table was so different from what our guest had at home. After we all bentched, my husband accompanied our guest out the door, who thanked him profusely and shared the little details he’d found interesting. There were quite a few! So, yes, I guess every corner of Klal Yisroel does have its own brand of minhagim and style — some universal, some unique — and all passed on for generations. Let’s discover the background of customs that warm and transform our Shabbos.

84

The Boro Park View

PREPARING THE LIGHT To quote the Arizal, the sweat of a person toiling in preparation for Shabbos is a segulah for kaparas avonos, much like tears of teshuvah. Indeed, throughout the generations, Yidden toiled to prepare for this holy day. One aspect traditionally carried out by the head of the household is the preparation of the licht. The seforim say that the woman lights, and the husband prepares the wicks. Reb Chaim Yitzchok Poupko, a talmid of the Chofetz Chaim, related that he watched his rebbi prepare the licht before Shabbos every single week. One week, he asked the rebbetzin, “Perhaps I can help the Rosh Yeshivah and take over this task?” “The Rosh Yeshivah wouldn’t even allow me to do it,” the rebbetzin replied, “so he wouldn’t give it over to you either…”

A TINY TASTE Sampling the Shabbos foods on Friday afternoon is more than just a means to satiation until the seudah arrives; the Magen Avraham actually lists it as a mitzvah. Picture preparing a feast for a king — or, in our days, for a gadol scheduled to visit our home. Surely, we’d make sure to taste every dish before serving it. In fact, ensuring every dish is the best it can be is key to welcoming the Shabbos Queen — and to avoiding discord in the home, should the food taste less than up to par. Some tzaddikim suffice with sampling but one food, relying on the housewife’s proficiency in the kitchen. And, as we say in Mussaf on Shabbos, “To’ameha chaim zachu” — those who sample the food on Erev Shabbos merit long life.

THE SHABBOS BELL It’s fifteen minutes to the zman hadlakas neiros, and the bell or music blasts into our homes, reminding us that the Shabbos Queen is at our doorstep. This minhag is actually mentioned in Mishnayos (Sukkah 5:5), where the tekios that were blown every day in the Beis Hamikdash are described. The Mishnah points out that a short time before Shabbos began, three tekios were heard to remind everyone to wrap up their work, and just as Shabbos descended, another three tekios were sounded to announce that all melachah was now forbidden. Similarly, in many Yiddish neighborhoods today, two rounds of chimes resound.

SHIR HASHIRIM Just before Minchah on Erev Shabbos is an auspicious time to recite the sacred words of Shir Hashirim, with Kabbalistic motives behind our awakening the ahavah between Klal Yisroel and Hakadosh Baruch Hu at that time. Also, by mentioning these pesukim that refer repeatedly to Yetzias Mitzrayim, we hope to rouse the spirit of geulah — for if we keep two Shabbosos properly, we will immediately merit the Geulah. Rav Alexander Ziskind, the Yesod V’Shoresh Ha’avodah, would immerse in the mikveh and dress in his white Shabbos finery before leaving to shul, holding a Shir Hashirim he himself had written on klaf. He would read the pesukim with intense fervor, and Reb Nachum’ke of Horodna said that the malachim used to stop singing shirah to listen to the pleasant voice of Reb Alexander’s Shir Hashirim. Once, the chassidim of the Maggid of Mezritch were sitting together on Friday night and reviewing their Rebbe’s divrei Torah. Reb Aharon of Karlin was sitting in a room of his own, reciting Shir Hashirim. Suddenly, the Rebbe’s shammas burst in and requested that Reb Aharon stop immediately. The words of his Shir Hashirim were stirring the upper spheres to the point that the Maggid was unable to sleep… Another tale is brought down in Sifrei Teiman about a simple laborer who sang Shir Hashirim to a special tune, word for word, every Erev Shabbos. After he passed away, he was sent to Gehinnom, but the fires and wheels of Gehinnom stopped mid-motion as the sweet melody of the Yid’s Shir Hashirim wafted through the air. The Yid was sent back to the Beis Din Shel Maalah, and he was soon released. He later appeared to the rav of his city in a Friday night dream and shared his account.

BIRKAS HABANIM

On Friday night, an abundance of bracha is available, and many have the minhag of drawing from it for their children by bentching them when they come home from shul. The Chasam Sofer writes that all week, we are busy with parnassah, making it more challenging to have this in mind, but on Shabbos, we can easily remember to bentch the children. Yidden of Yekkish descent are often blessed by both their father and mother, and many also perform birchas habanim on Motzei Shabbos. Additionally, the Arizal writes that it is good for a child to kiss his mother’s hand on Friday night. One week, after bentching one of his young grandsons, Rav Shimon Sofer, author of Hisorerus Teshuvah, added another blessing: “Hashem should help that you should not break an arm or leg,” he said. Those around chuckled, knowing that this child was particularly lively, but that Shabbos afternoon, the boy was playing outside with his siblings when he ran into the street. Suddenly, a car passed and hit the child, but did not harm him. (Siddur Yaavetz, Chasam Sofer)

SMELLING HADASSIM When Rabi Shimon bar Yochai and his son Elazar left their cave, they saw a man carrying two bundles of myrtle on Erev Shabbos. The man explained that he was preparing them to smell l’kavod Shabbos — one for zachor and one for shamor. Rabi Shimon exclaimed over this display of chavivus hamitzvos. Based on this, there are those who have the minhag to smell hadassim before Kiddush, and it is said to be a segulah for righteous children. Inhaling a whiff of pleasant aroma gladdens the heart and broadens the mind, allowing the scent of Shabbos to permeate our being. For generations, sniffing tabak was a form of oneg Shabbos. The Chofetz Chaim once commented that if one withholds his craving for a sniff of tabak on Shabbos, he violates the mitzvah of oneg Shabbos! Smelling tabak has deeper significance as well, elevating finer sparks of kedusha that cannot be elevated through food alone. Many tzaddikim regarded sniffing tabak as a holy avodah. (Arizal, Maharsha)

SHALOM BAYIS KUGEL A couple once came to the Kozhnitzer Maggid, ready for divorce. The man argued that although he greatly enjoyed his wife’s kugel, she would not allow him to eat it right away. After Kiddush, she first served challah, fish, soup and potatoes. Only then, when he was already satiated, would his wife offer him kugel. The woman, however, maintained that kugel was meant to be served at the end of the meal, much the way her mother did. The Maggid suggested that two kugels be prepared: one to be eaten right after Kiddush, and the other for the end of the seudah. And so it was. From that Shabbos on, two kugels were served weekly at the Kozhnitzer Maggid’s table as well. And this is how shalom bayis kugel — or a kugel with three distinct layers of potato, noodles and kishke — got its name. It is indeed a harmonious indication that we, too, can get along!

THE TABLECLOTH On Shabbos, all tables should be covered with a tablecloth. Some are careful to have a double layer of covering. Reb Hershel of Zidichov commented that when the tablecloth is spread before chatzos on Erev Shabbos, it is a segulah to eliminate the yetzer hara, which awakens machlokes typical in the home at that time. A talmid once entered the home of Rav Yechezkel Abramsky on a Friday morning and saw a beautifully set Shabbos table. He asked if the Rav had a hakpadah to set the table this early every week. Rav Yechezkel replied with a story. A number of years earlier, his fatherin-law, the Ridvaz, was deathly ill. While grappling with his pain, the Ridvaz davened, speaking directly to the Ribbono Shel Olam. Suddenly, he turned around and called his rebbetzin. “Please, I ask that from today on, every Friday morning when I arrive home from Shacharis, the table should be set. This will be the key to my full recovery.” According to the Mishnah Berurah, the tablecloth should remain on the table at least until after Havdalah, and some are careful not to remove it until the following morning.

THE SHTREIMEL When the Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, was in the D.P. camp in Foehrenwald, a non-Jew approached him and asked him to explain why Yidden wear a shtreimel on Shabbos. The Rebbe replied with one basic answer, though there are many. “Years ago,” he said, “the antiSemites in Spain, Germany and France wished to denigrate the Yidden, and they decreed that Yidden must place the tail of an animal on their hats. In time, Yidden turned these tails into magnificent hats. After this decree was rescinded, Yidden continued to wear their shtreimels on Shabbos and special occasions as a reminder that Hashem saved them from those who abhorred them.” Indeed, the tails used to create the shtreimel are here remind us how Shabbos has the power to elevate even the lowliest things. Rav Pinchas of Koritz used to say that the shtreimel takes the place of tefillin on Shabbos, as the first letters of the phrase form an acronym of Shabbos: shtreimel bimkom tefillin. He used to whisper this to himself as he donned his shtreimel after davening. The core minhag in its rawest source is to wear a hat especially set aside for Shabbos.

WHITE White represents forgiveness and purity, much like the chut hashani, the red thread that turned white on Yom Kippur in the Beis Hamikdash. For generations, Yidden have had the custom of wearing a white article of clothing and covering their tables in white, setting Shabbos apart from all other days of the week. (Zohar, Arizal)

In some chassidic courts, such as Lelov, Karlin and Toldos Aharon, all men — not only the baal tefillah — wear a tallis on Friday night, from before Minchah of Erev Shabbos until after Maariv. Some even wear the tallis until after they make Kiddush. After Shabbos, a minhag surrounding the tallis comes into play as well, with many being careful to fold their tallis immediately after Shabbos. This signifies that with Shabbos over, work is now permitted, and we wish our first work to be one associated with a mitzvah. Reb Itzikel of Pshevorsk is famously known to have said, “Folding the tallis on Motzei Shabbos is said to be a segulah for shalom bayis, but I say that folding up one’s sleeve to wash dishes and help out at home is certainly a segulah for shalom bayis.”

HERE YOU WON’T GET BENT OUT OF

Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

Bubby’s china closet held a certain mystique for her young grandchildren, who were allowed to look at the enchanting pieces but never to touch. Her collection may have included a functional dinner service, an ornamental tea set, porcelain miniatures, or a variety of all. Whatever the contents of the cabinet were, each piece featured an elaborate painted pattern, often edged in gold. And even as those grandchildren grow up, with some possibly inheriting their grandmothers’ beloved china collections, they, too, treat it with reverence. Antique china actually can be very valuable. And even those not worth selling hold sentimental value that can’t quite be measured. So if you’ve got any heirloom pieces, enjoy them to the fullest! They bring back great memories and are beautiful to display.

CHINA CREATION: THE PORCELAIN PROCESS The production of china begins with a clay mixture. Originally, the ingredients used for the clay were discovered in, you guessed it, China. Marco Polo, the famous traveler, brought back a small porcelain vase to Europe, where the material was named “white gold” for its beauty and durability. Europeans found that china, while appearing extremely delicate, was actually very strong and hard to break compared to the earthenware dishes they used until then. This combination of delicacy and durability made it a popular choice for high-class dining. Eventually, Europeans learned how to make their own porcelain from the materials kaolin, feldspar and quartz — but they still called the dishes “china” after the original creations. Once the clay ingredients were mixed together and molded into a shape, the mold was fired at a high temperature until it became solid. Then the dish was glazed, and finally, painted with its desired pattern. Higher-quality China was often gilded around the edges in 22-karat gold.

But Is It Bone? The first question to ask about china is whether it is fine bone china or regular porcelain. There’s a real difference. While porcelain is made of the standard clay mixture, bone china has an added ingredient: bone ash. Bone ash is a powdery white substance made from incinerated animal bones. The bones are completely ground and burned, becoming an entirely different material. (There is no kashrus concern, since no taste can be imparted to the food. Dried animal bone is not considered capable of imparting taste at all, so the ash definitely poses no problem.) Adding bone ash to the clay gives the finished porcelain product a unique milky-white color. It also softens it, which, surprisingly, makes it more durable. Bone china also has more translucence; it lets in more light. If you want to check out your china, hold it up to the light. If it’s bone, it won’t be completely opaque.

The Simpler Side Dinnerware made of regular porcelain, without the added bone ash, is also sometimes called fine china. Despite lacking the added qualities of bone china, porcelain dishes still set a beautiful Shabbos table. These can also be gilded and feature pretty designs, but they are less expensive than their bone china counterparts. 102

POPULAR PORCELAIN PATTERNS

Herend: The Hungarian Legend In today’s minimalist design world, painted designs on china may look rather quaint. But its very quaintness is what lends it the flavor that has customers begging for more. Herend Porcelain Manufactory still produces its china patterns that have been popular for over a century. Founded in the 1800s in the Hungarian town of Herend, they quickly built a reputation for high-class, hand-painted china.

Queen Victoria Pattern Surely, the World’s Fair in 1851 had plenty of enchanting exhibitions, but Queen Victoria of England loved the Herend porcelain on display. Soon she ordered a set of dinnerware painted with her favorite design featuring colorful butterflies and peonies. Of course, once Queen Victoria had a set of Herend china, every self-respecting European noblewoman found it necessary to buy Herend porcelain too. Herend named the pattern Victoria Decor. The pattern is still produced today, with slight variations to the original. Antique plates with this pattern can sell for hundreds of dollars to collectors. 104

Chinese Bouquet Collection Hungarian Count Apponyi was hosting a large party. What better way to impress his guests than with unique Herend dishes? At an exhibition of Herend china, he discovered a pattern called “Indian Flower Basket,” and the count placed an order for dinner service painted in this design. Unfortunately, however, there weren’t enough painters to fulfill his request in time for the party. Instead, Herend offered to paint the design in a single color. The single-color pattern was a hit among Herend collectors, and it was named the Chinese Bouquet-Apponyi collection. If you’re personally familiar with the name, you’ve probably heard it called simply Chinese Bouquet, as Apponyi was too difficult for Americans to pronounce. Depending on the year it was crafted, Chinese Bouquet dishes can be extremely valuable. A dinner plate in this pattern can sell for $150.

Rothschild Bird Pattern Once upon a time, Baroness Rothschild lost her pearl necklace. She was sure her maid had stolen it, but as she was walking through her gardens, she saw some pretty birds in a tree playing with… her pearl necklace. No way to prosecute these thieves. No one knows if this story is actually true, but the Baroness definitely adored the china pattern featuring birds and a necklace. The first set of dinnerware with this motif belonged to the Rothschild family, which gave the collec106

Haviland Limoges: An American’s Dream

Finding kaolin, one of the main ingredients of porcelain, near the French town of Limoges made history. Limoges craftsmen would create the china pieces, then sell them to artists to design. That is, until David Haviland, an American, opened his own factory in France. He produced and painted his china in one location, and Haviland Limoges designs became extremely popular in America in the 1900s. Because there were so many different artists of varying talent who painted Limoges china, prices for old pieces vary greatly. It all depends on the uniqueness of the design, which artist signed his name, and how old the piece is.

tion its name in 1861. If you’re lucky enough to own a piece painted with the Rothschild Bird pattern, look at it closely. You’ll see that there are twelve slightly different scenes featured in the design. The two birds in the tree shift position in each one, seeming to tell a story. The updated version of the bird pattern has a fish-scale painted rim, with the most popular colors being blue and light green. But the older pieces are still valued by porcelain collectors, and large collections can fetch prices of over $10,000. December 8, 2021

Every self-respecting Hungarian homemaker’s collection some 50 years ago boasted some kind of cobalt dishes. Made of real cobalt, “Echt Kobalt” as their stamps affirmed, these heavily gold-edged regal pieces were de rigueur in china closets. They were available from various brands. Popular ones are Weimar, a German company that has been producing porcelain since 1790, and Reichenbach, which opened in about 1900.

Royal Albert: Recent Addition The Royal Albert porcelain company is a rather new player in china production, as it was first founded in the 1900s. Based in England, their styles have a distinctly English feel. Of course, they produced lovely tea sets, in keeping with the English tea time tradition.

Old Country Roses Royal Albert is most known for their beloved china pattern known as Old Country Roses. The design featuring red and yellow flowers was inspired by flowers growing in the English countryside. Over 150 million pieces of china with this pattern have been sold! Since it was designed in 1962, most pieces aren’t true antiques, and the average sale price of a plate would be in the $40 range.

A Touch of Whimsy: The Playful Side of Porcelain Beyond the basic china dishes, porcelain companies also produce vases, boxes, figurines, porcelain eggs and other ornamental pieces. These accessories were sometimes the most treasured part of the china closet! In Herend china, vases were an especially popular item. The elegant pieces made wonderful centerpieces, and their floral designs complemented actual sprays of flowers beautifully. A vase was also more affordable than buying a complete dinner service. Limoges was famous for their small ornamental porcelain boxes, meant for holding breath mints. Called bonbonnieres, they were usually HEREND VA SE 110

While min haTorah, only metal dishes must be toveled, Chazal added glassware to the list. Keilim that were owned by a gentile, both metal and glass, must be toveled with a bracha. What about earthenware, like china? Dishes made from clay earth, like ceramics, do not require tevilah according to most poskim. However, since china was usually glazed with liquid glass, most poskim rule that one should tovel china. But this tevilah is done without a bracha. Corelle is a form of glass and therefore requires tevilah with a bracha.

too delicate to actually carry in an evening bag, and were instead put on display at home.

Porcelain eggs were another favorite. Faberge was a Russian artist who created highly decorated eggs for display, and many china companies followed suit. The delicate egg would be placed on a three-legged stand in its place of honor in the china cabinet. The world of porcelain sculptures is vast and features an endless variety of designs. Whatever strikes your particular fancy, you can probably find it in porcelain.

ake a stroll through a bakery before Shabbos, and you’ll be tempted by the whiff of fresh baked goods and the mouthwatering delicacies in the showcases. Have you ever wondered what it takes to feed the many families who rely on bakeries for their Shabbos necessities? Let’s go behind the scenes with Shloimy Lebowitz, owner of Shloimy’s bakeries, and Isaac Weinstock, the manager of their Monsey location. 116

When do you begin preparing for Shabbos? It really depends on the item. We bake regular challos on Thursdays and Fridays, but our sourdough process begins on Tuesday. Our cookies and cakes get baked throughout the week. Tell me about the bakery. What does the schedule look like? The day before the baking begins, our bakers prepare all the dough and put everything in the fridge. At about 3 a.m. the mashgiach arrives and turns on the ovens and checks the eggs for the day. A little later, when the bakers arrive, we take all the dough out of the fridge to proof — and when it’s ready, we bake everything. The schedule is different on Friday, though, when we start much earlier, at around 1 a.m. The bakery is closed in the later afternoon hours.

How do the weekday buying habits of your customers differ from Shabbos buying habits? During the week we focus more on giving customers different varieties of Danishes, as well as rolls and breads. Toward the end of the week the focus is on challos and fresh cakes for Shabbos. These go during the week, as well, but people buy them mainly for Shabbos. When do most people do their Shabbos bakery shopping? We try to have the shelves stocked with cookies and cake by Wednesday, because these are usually bought on Thursday. People want really fresh challos, so they come back to buy those on Friday. We December 8, 2021

The summer is very busy at our Monsey location, while demand goes down in the city. The upstate store, located in the Buyrite in Woodridge, is really busy in the summer, because many people don’t like to bake while in the country. There are also also busy seasons, such as right before the summer begins, the pre– yom tov season when people are busy with other preparations, and before school starts. The weeks leading to Pesach are extremely hectic in the bakery, while the week after Pesach is quiet because people tend to bake their own shlissel challos.

What about the machinery? How does a professional bakery differ from a home in terms of machinery? Our mixers can hold huge quantities. Some mixers hold around 100 pounds of flour, while our challah dough mixers hold 200 pounds of flour — and that’s before the other ingredients are added. We can produce about 200 challos from one batch. We also have different ovens for different items. Sourdoughs and bagels are baked in a big Dutch oven because it gets very hot, hotter than a regular oven. Regular bread and challah are baked in a stone 118

oven with shelves that revolve, so the heat is dispersed properly for even baking. Then there is the cake oven, which is designed to keep the cakes moist. We also have separate floors in the bakery for pareve and for dairy; the pareve machines are never used for dairy.

Why do you have to start the sourdough process on Tuesday? We have a sourdough starter that we feed every day, and we keep it in the fridge until Tuesday, when we begin the two-day process to make the sourdough. Then we let the breads ferment for about 18 hours from when we start making them until they’re ready to be baked. People love our sourdough; it accounts for about a third of all the challos. that we sell now.

Do you think the sourdough craze is just a fad? Sourdough is probably going to stay around. It’s delicious and so much healthier. Once you get used to eating sourdough, you can’t really go back to regular challah, because aside from tasting great, it is so much easier on the stomach. Often, when we go the healthier route, we give up on something; when we cut out sugar, for instance, we lose a lot of taste. You don’t give up anything by eating sourdough. You get full and it tastes great. It’s popular for a reason!

Shoe polish was created in 1904 as “boot polish” in a small factory in Melbourne, Australia. William Ramsay and his partner Hamilton McKellar, both of Scottish origin, refined and later launched their new product under the brand Kiwi in 1906. Though the Sydney-based Cobra Boot Polish brand and others soon followed, Kiwi remains the most popular shoe polish brand in the world today. During medieval times, prior to the invention of modern shoe polish, a variety of items — including wax and tallow — were used to polish leather shoes and boots. During the eighteenth century, when a high and shiny finish on anything leather, including footwear, became an important factor, people concocted their own homemade polishes. They usually used lanolin or beeswax as a base, as its greasiness left a high gloss.

DID YOU KNOW? Shoe polish can be used in graffiti, as its texture and permanent stain make it an ideal choice. Shoe polish is typically sold in two-ounce tins, since larger containers would dry out before they are fully used. If the polish in your can does get dried out, you can place it in a warm place, which will melt the wax and other ingredients back into usable condition. Use caution, though: Its contents are highly flammable! Out of shoe polish? Other shoeshining methods include using a banana peel or nylon fabric to buff leather footwear. 126

Shining shoes isn’t just a cosmetic upgrade; it is also a significant factor to maintaining leather shoes and boots. The polish moisturizes and further waterproofs the leather, which increases the lifespan of the footwear.

Shoeshine boys, bearing shoe polish and a polishing cloth, were once a common sight on the streets, particularly in the United Kingdom. Today they have nearly disappeared from the street corners, railroad stations and shops they used to frequent. Airport shoeshine stands, though, in the past an airport staple, are still said to be around in approximately 50 U.S. airports. • The Executive Shine team at Denver International Airport works on an average of 400 to 600 pairs of shoes and boots — or sometimes sneakers, belts, and bags — each day. Here, customers get to decide on the price they want to pay for the work. • At the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, two shoeshine stands named Like New have been run by Wayne Kendrick’s family for about 40 years. The younger Kendrick began helping his father out at the airport 33 years ago, and he currently runs the stands along with his brother. They charge seven dollars per shine, only two dollars more than the fivedollar price charged by their father all those years ago. • You may prefer to fly via the El Paso International Airport, though, as the Los Amigos Shoeshine stand has been charging only four dollars a shine since 2005. • The Shoe Hospital at Chicago International Airport offers not only shoe shining services but a full range of shoe repairs. Travelers often drop off items before flying and pick them up when they return. Not coming back? They can choose to have their footwear mailed home instead. • Be sure to stop by at Rick Evans’ Shine on the Go stand at Missouri’s Kansas City International Airport to have a look, or even sit on, his pride-inducing wooden shoeshine chair, made for him by a teacher from a local high school. • Better yet, find an airport among the many that offer a shoeshine as a traditional service, free of charge (tips are accepted and pretty standard, by the way!), as it is said to keep their customers coming back.
