(Re: Bringing In the Upgrade, Issue 113) I found the ideas in your home maintenance piece so refreshing. I’m usually one to shy away from DIY projects because I don’t consider myself very handy or savvy in the decorating department. But here were such doable and inexpensive ideas that I hope to implement in my home over the next few weeks to freshen it up from the outside in. Thank you! C.I.

THE MAIN FIXTURE OF THE HOME

(Re: Bringing In the Upgrade, Issue 113) I’m commenting on your article about easy fix-ups for the home. In the last section discussing the entrance, you wrote to pay considerable attention to the mezuzah. I was looking forward to reading what would follow, but was disappointed to see that what you addressed was getting a nice mezuzah case. I think that’s missing the point by miles! We need to focus on spending money on the inside: What kind of mezuzah do you have hanging on your door? Did you have it checked by a reliable sofer? Did you spend money to get one that’s mehudar? Do you realize that the mezuzah is the shemirah of the home, and not about impressing others? You may want to bring across this point, of what every Yid should be addressing, to the public. May we have the zechus to upgrade Yiddishkeit both in our town and in all of Klal Yisroel. A Reader

EXPANSION

(Re: Welcome to My Home, Issue 113) I saw the beautiful family room transformation, and I just can’t believe that the before and after pictures are of the same room! The space in the “after” picture just looks so much bigger! I kept going back and forth to see if they could possibly be one and the same. Either way, you did an incredible job. It’s my style, and I would love to do something like it in my own home. DEVOIRY SIGAL REPLIES: It really is unbelievable to see the right paint color and design making a room feel so much bigger. Both are actual pictures of the very same room.

A YIDDISHE TA’AM?

have newspapers or magazines in our home, we do bring yours home each week. I’d like to bring up an issue that bothered us in this week’s magazine: the focus, effort and time you encourage spending on beautifying the home. While there’s nothing wrong with tasteful and practical decor, do any of the rooms shown, both in the article and in the ads, depict a true Jewish home? Even if seforim would be displayed (hopefully not in matching white covers), where is the Yiddishe ta’am? These rooms are not practical for housefuls of children, for hosting guests comfortably, or for devoting time for learning. You would need daily cleaning help to keep it this way, or you’d need help to deal with the stress and the children. With best wishes for continued hatzlacha, Mrs. S. Eisenberg

A TIMELY READ

(Re: Welcome to My Home, Issue 113) Our entire family waits for Wednesdays when we get to read the new issue of The Boro Park View. We were so excited to read the

feature about renovations for the basement and to see the metamorphosis, because we’re doing exactly the same right now. We look forward to implementing some of the ideas! Family G.

AN INSPIRING MAN

(Re: Zeida, Issue 110) I very much enjoyed the article about Rabbi Zirkind, the author’s zeida. The reason I enjoyed the read is not only because it showed the mesirus nefesh of a young man who grew up in prewar America; I happen to remember Rabbi Zirkind from when I was a ten-year-old growing up in Baltimore. He was a mispallel in our shul Shearith Hapleta, and we knew him as a very special person. Rabbi Zirkind was a shochet who used to commute to Delaware during the week. He was also a very talented person, and I remember that he sewed all of the suits for his children himself. In regard to his yiras Shamayim, he would stand all of Yom Kippur — from Kol Nidrei until after Maariv — and I mean standing throughout the night also, for 26 hours straight. C.B.G.

King David Center Brings Joy to Families on Chanukah This year, King David Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation continued a tradition that was launched a year ago, when strict social distancing regulations were enforced due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the staff at King David Center wanted to celebrate Chanukah with members of the community, but due to lockdown restrictions an in-person event was out of the question. Instead, we invited the community to a drive-by Chanukah event, where Chanukah packages were distributed to hundreds of families. Each “Chanukah-in-a-Box” package contained activities and prizes, which were organized in eight different bags, each one labeled for another night of Chanukah. Due to the tremendous success of last year’s drive-by event, we doubled the number of packages that were prepared this year. In the weeks before Chanukah, we informed the community of the upcoming event via our social media account and ads in local papers. To our delight, the turnout was absolutely incredible! More than 1,200 families came by in their cars to pick up their very own Chanukah package! Throughout the day, we had cars lined up for blocks around our facility on Cropsey Avenue in Brooklyn. Uncle Moishy was on site, personally greeting each family as their car pulled up. Kids were screaming with joy and excitement as they met their hero in person and watched us place their very own Chanukah package inside their car. Among the items they would find inside were Uncle Moishy’s brand new book and CD, a science kit, a magic show kit, fun crafts, and so much more! Uncle Moishy and the King David Center team stood outside for hours, greeting the many families that had turned up. Not only did we get to see the excitement of each

family, but there were even some excited bubbies and zeides, who came to pick up Chanukah packages for their grandchildren! After the event, many people reached out via email with feedback that was absolutely heartwarming! One woman wrote how her children wait eagerly each night to open that day’s designated bag after lighting the Chanukah neiros. Another parent shared that the packages are an amazing incentive for her children to clean up, as she gives each night’s bag only after they’d done so. Others described how their kids “jump with joy” when they receive the bags each night and how much they enjoy the activities and entertainment. After all the hours of thought and hard work that were put into the creation of the Chanukah activity boxes, our team was delighted to see the amazing turnout and hear the enthusiastic feedback. Over the past few years, the King David Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation has worked hard to make our facility the most attractive option for members of the frum community, with our beautiful shul, delicious kosher meals, an on-site rabbi, yom tov programs, and more. This is in addition to all our state-ofthe-art therapy equipment and outstanding medical staff. We are grateful that our heimishe program is growing in leaps and bounds Baruch Hashem, and so this event is our way to affirm that we indeed see ourselves as part of your family and that in all our work, our goal remains to bring joy to every family.

After one of the senior doctors finished operating on the injured teen, the ER doctor on call took advantage of his presence and brought him to take a look at the waiting patients. Yeshivah Curriculums Are on Lander’s Upcoming Agenda Making his plans clear before he even steps into his new office as New York City Comptroller, Brad Lander said that he plans to ensure that substantially equivalent curriculums are in place in all city schools, public and private. Hamodia reported that Lander announced his plans last Thursday night at a virtual meeting, noting that state law clearly states that all private and parochial schools need to offer secular studies comparable to what is being offered in public schools, especially those that receive busing and books from the city. “It is a responsibility of the city as a whole, and the comptroller in particular, to be paying attention and audit and make sure those obligations are being met,” said Lander. A self-described progressive, Lander would have the authority to audit yeshivos as comptroller, but not to force curriculum changes. City Councilman Kalman Yeger wasted no time in blasting Lander. “Not a word from Comptroller-elect Lander about the abysmal state of NYC’s public schools, where (outside of Park Slope) children struggle for an education and fear for their lives on a daily basis. But, by all means, target yeshivos,” tweeted Lander.

City Spells Out New Workplace Vaccination Regulations Hoping to clarify at least some of the confusion regarding the latest vaccination mandates, the New York City Department of Health issued a new set of guidelines that take effect on December 27. Under the new regulations, all city employees who work in direct contact with or interact with customers will have to show that they have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Employees will also be required to show proof of a second vaccination by February 10 if they received the two-part Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The latest mandate also applies to contractors and to vehicle-based businesses where two or more people may be present. Those who have certain conditions that cause adverse reactions to the vaccine must submit a request for reasonable accommodation by December 27. No religious exemptions are being allowed for the vaccine. Businesses were warned to anticipate inspections to ensure that they have written or electronic records of their employee’s vaccinations, as well as a publicly visible certificate saying they have complied with vaccine regulations. nesses will not be allowed to have unvaccinated workers at their workplace once the new regulations go into effect. Announcing the latest guidelines, Mayor Bill de Blasio emphasized that their goal was compliance, not penalties. “We’re not going to end up in the situation that some parts of this country are in, even this state, where hospitals are overwhelmed — we can’t let that happen in New York City,” said de Blasio. “We need these strong measures now, and I fully expect that we’ll have a very positive experience working with the business community to make it work for everyone.”

Cuomo Ordered To Return $5.1 Million Earned From COVID-19 Book Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had no compunctions about publicly hailing himself for beating back COVID-19 in his now-controversial 2020 book, but a state ethics committee has ordered him to return the $5.1 million he earned off the book deal. The New York Post reported that the decision was handed down by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, the state’s top ethics panel. Revoking a previous decision that allowed Cuomo to earn outside income from his book, American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic, the panel decided that the former governor had broken his promise not to use state resources of government employees to prepare his book. Cuomo was ordered to pay the state the $5.1 million in profits within 30 days of its December 14th ruling.

The money will be turned over to Attorney General Letitia James, who will decide how it will be distributed. Cuomo’s book deal remains the subject of additional investigations by James, the FBI and the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s Office. With Cuomo having forced nursing homes to accept COVIDpositive patients and then attempting to cover up the deaths by issuing falsified data, sympathy for the former governor was in short supply. “I’m super happy,” said Tracey Alvino, whose father Daniel died in a Long Island nursing home. “It was blood money, written off the graves of 15,000 people.” “Cuomo tried to make a profit off the death of our loved ones,” noted Haydee Pabey, who lost her mother Elba in a Washington Heights nursing home. “He wrote a self-congratulatory book in the middle of a pandemic. He didn’t fix the problem. He made it worse with his policies. He killed people.” But Cuomo attorney Jim McGuire wasted no time striking back. “JCOPE’s actions today are unconstitutional, exceed its own authority and appear to be driven by political interests rather than facts and the law,” said McGuire. “Should they seek to enforce this action, we’ll see them in court.”

American Dream Flagship Store Has Toys R Us Returning to Regular Retail No matter your age, you can be a Toys R Us kid again! The nostalgic toy store is once again a place to visit, with the grand opening of its only U.S. brick-and-mortar store — a 20,000-square-foot children’s paradise — at the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The brand, now owned by WHP Global, currently has more than 900 stores internationally and a digital presence of its own and through Macy’s website. But the East Rutherford location is its only physical store in the states. “America loves a comeback,” said Yehuda Shmidman, CEO of WHP Global. “We love the brand. We’re not changing the brand at all,” he said. “We’re infusing the best practices and data we have from the global business that exists to this day.” The store, which is the global flagship, has 10,000 toys set up by brand and play pattern — among them favorites such as Lego, Playmobil, dolls, crafts and books. With a two-story slide, interactive experiences, product demonstrations and other fun touches, the store will offer an experience that goes beyond shopping for children, “This store is going to be really dynamic,” Shmidman said, adding that merchandise will be changed out seasonally and to keep up with trends. Given its reputation as a unique retail and entertainment attraction catering to all audiences, American Dream CEO Don Ghermezian hailed Toys R Us as a perfect fit for the mall. “We didn’t want just any toy store. We wanted something that resonates, and there is no greater brand than Toys R Us.” “Toys R Us sparks the same feeling of joy across multiple age groups,” said Ghermezian. “This powerful brand is the perfect addition to American Dream. We’re thrilled to partner with WHP Global and Toys R Us to bring this project to life.” Toys R Us does not have any plans to announce other freestanding locations in the U.S. anytime soon.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN RECAP: Elazar

Reiness receives a call from his mediator, Karni, who wants answers about the house plans. Elazar is very worried that the plan won’t work out. Ariella finds Aliza doing strange, superstitious things with lit candles.

T

he strange odor had completely dissipated by the time Ariella opened the door of her room after a short, fitful nap. Now the house was filled with the regular smell of frying omelets, but Ariella had no desire to go into the kitchen. She glanced at the stand. The plant was back in its place, and there was no sign of any candles. A small orange circle adorned the tile closest to the metal stand, the only evidence of the bizarre scene from earlier that morning. “Hi!” Aliza came through the doorway of the kitchen. “How are you? Did you sleep well? Want an omelet?” “You waited until I got up to have your omelet?” She tried to sound impressed at her hostess’s consideration. “No, of course not. I’m running late today because I had to go out. So, do you want an omelet?” Ariella decided that she would press the point a bit. “No, but thanks for the offer,” she said as she walked toward Aliza. “I have my own food, for today and for Shabbos. But I have to tell you that I didn’t sleep so well.” “Why? Is the bed not comfortable?” “No, the bed is fine. But I had some… thoughts last night, and they prevented me from falling asleep.” She didn’t walk into the kitchen; she just stood at the door and watched Aliza, who had gone back to tending to her omelet. “There are all kinds of ways to deal with thoughts that come at night,” Aliza said. “We have our strengths, we have our interests —” “I know I have my strengths, baruch Hashem,”

Ariella said, slightly irritated. “But in order for me to be refreshed, I have to sleep well — at least in the morning, if I didn’t sleep well at night. But this morning —” “I didn’t say you have strengths,” Aliza cut her off. “You have nothing, you young, poor, confused lady. I said, we have strengths. We. Don’t you understand? If you are smart, I can help you!” Ariella turned on her heel, without another word, and walked back to her room. Unpleasant as it was to say it, this woman was not only strange — she needed some mental help, urgently. ***** Rabbi Reiness finished his afternoon shiur, and the boys rose from their places and walked out to the carpentry shop where Yehuda Matari was waiting for them to start the day’s work. Osher, as usual, headed for one of the corners. He sat down on a plastic chair, bent down to the floor, and picked up an old wooden handle. Slowly, he began to roll it between his hands. The boys spread out through the shop, some remaining standing at the large table, while others began to measure the new planks of wood that had arrived that morning. A buzz of talking filled the large room, but suddenly it grew quiet; only one voice was speaking. Osher shifted so he could see past the large plank that was blocking him and saw Rabbi Reiness standing in the middle of the room. Osher stood up and walked over to the table. “…So I’d appreciate it if you could tell me if you see anything like this. It’s very important to me.” “Sure, Rebbi,” said Nachum, the shortest of the boys. “What’s the question? Of course we will; we’ll do whatever you ask.” Reb Elazar smiled and patted Nachum’s shoulder. Then he raised his eyes and caught sight of Osher. He walked over to him. “Did you hear what I said, Osher?” “Just the end,” the sixteen-year-old replied. “That we should tell you about something or another?” “Right. Now listen to what kind of thing I want you to tell me about.” Osher went back to his chair, and Rabbi Reiness followed him. “If, in the near future, you see any suspicious-looking people walking around near this house, near the carpentry shop, and especially in the area of —” “Of the shiur room,” Osher filled in for him. Rabbi Reiness stared at him for a moment, surprised, and then smiled. “Yes, that’s right. Mainly in the area of the shiur room. So, if you see anything like this, I want you to tell me about it right away.” “Why, Rebbi?” “Because there may be people who are looking to do harm to this place.” “Why? Does it bother them that we are learning Torah?” “Oh, no, that’s probably not the issue, though I’m sure they are not particularly pleased about that either. It’s

something else.” “What?” The Rav smiled silently. “Is it a secret?” Osher asked. “For now, yes.” “Connected to the will or the treasure or the whateverit-was that you told me about, something about a secret from your father?” “If it’s a secret for now, then it’s a secret,” Reb Elazar said. “Well, okay,” Osher said. “I’ll try to keep an eye out.” “Thank you so much.” “Should I go check it out now?” “You certainly can,” Rabbi Reiness said. “That’s actually a good idea. Not that we have to be there day and night, but it won’t do any harm to peek in once in a while to make sure everything is okay.” “Fine,” Osher said. He stood up to leave the room and almost collided with a man outside who inquired about the carpentry shop. “Yes, the carpentry shop is here,” Osher said. “You can go inside — they’ll ask you what you’re looking for and for the measurements and all that. I’m not so involved in the carpentry work here...” So what are you involved with, Osher? Rabbi Reiness wanted to ask, but didn’t. He just smiled in welcome at the man who had come in to contribute to the income of the small carpentry business. When he had opened it, he hadn’t intended it to be much more than an activity for his boys, but word had gotten around, and they had gained a number of customers. It wasn’t a bad thing, and it helped him pay for better meals for the boys. He was also looking into hiring a serious young man from Haifa to give a Gemara shiur three times a week. Osher slowly walked out of the carpentry shop and turned toward the backyard. He’d noticed a few weeks ago what an old house it really was, but he hadn’t thought about it much since then. The upstairs level was quite new, but down here everything was so old. Why didn’t they renovate? Everything was full of long, deep cracks. It looked like with one big blow, the walls would come crumbling down. What was Reb Elazar afraid of? That someone would come and destroy this ancient room? Osher leaned on the wall. It felt rather strong. He even tried to punch it with his fist, but nothing happened. Another punch. Still nothing happened. Well, of course — it was a thick stone wall! “Osher?” Within seconds, Reb Elazar was at his side. “Is that you? Baruch Hashem. I got nervous.” “What, that someone came to steal the treasure?”

Why was it, Reb Elazar wondered, that he always found himself releasing information to Osher?

“Osher, I’ve already told you; there’s no treasure.” “So why do you guard this place as if you know that there’s something here?” Osher’s chin stuck out stubbornly. “Because I need it.” “What for?” Reb Elazar sighed. “I need to do something there.” “And after you do that something, then you won’t need the room anymore?” Why was it, Reb Elazar wondered, that he always found himself releasing information to Osher? “Probably not,” he said at last. *****

“Hi, Ariella. All set for Shabbos this week?” “Yes, baruch Hashem. I don’t have to prepare much, you know...” “Your hostess would probably be happy to join you for the meals, no?” “I don’t know…” Ariella shook her head, though she knew her mother couldn’t see her. “I have no idea what she wants and what she doesn’t. She’s a little strange…” “You could offer her an invitation.” “Right,” Ariella said, not wanting to tell her mother about her strange morning. She’d only get nervous. And it was nerve-wracking, Ariella had to admit. Maybe she’d leave after Shabbos. But where would she go? Back to Bnei Brak? “Osher called,” her mother said suddenly. “He spoke to both me and Tatty.” “Really? How did he sound?” “Pretty good,” her mother replied slowly. “I think better than the previous times. Are you still in the area, Ariella?” “I’m staying two minutes from his yeshivah.” She laughed. “If you can call it that.” “How does he look to you? How do the other boys look?” “I hardly see them; they’re quite closed-in there.” “Okay, but how do they dress?” “They’re all kinds.” She scratched her neck. “There are a few in black and white, and some are more colorful.” Her mother was quiet for a moment. “And Osher?” she finally whispered. “I only saw him once, when he was released from the hospital after Shabbos, and he was in his Shabbos clothes.” “With a hat? And suit?” “A suit, yes. I didn’t see the hat. But it was raining and they had packages with them, so it could be that there was a hat box among them. Oh, and I also saw him for a minute one rainy night, and he was wearing his long black coat. Without a hat.” “What do they do there all day? Woodworking?” “For a big part of the day. Sometimes I feel like walking in and ordering a dresser or something, just so I could see the place from inside.” She giggled. “But why would I need any furniture if I don’t even have a home of my own right now?” To be continued…

The Boro Park View

When they debuted over eighteen years ago, the Mitzvah Kinder® took our community’s toy market by storm. Here were adorable little people — bubbies and zeidies, mommies and tatties, boys and girls, as well as community helpers, neighbors and friends — that looked just like the big people our community’s children know and love! In this interview with Mrs. Toby Horowitz of Mitzvah Kinder fame, The Boro Park View learns more about this beloved brand.

What inspired you to go into this line? What made you think of mentchees™? It all began with a passion for toys and the desire to create playthings that are perfectly appropriate for our kinderlach. I’d always been intrigued by the people look-alikes in the general toy market, both when I watched my girls playing with their dolls and when I put up puppet shows as a teacher. There was so much out there, and that made me wonder: Wouldn’t it be nice if our children had their own version of these toys, all based on characters they can relate to? Imagine having familiar-looking, Yiddishthemed products! When we debuted our first Mitzvah Kinder CD, I watched as kids grew connected to Mr. Kapalovsky, and that’s when my parents gave me the idea to actually produce these characters as mentchees. I very much enjoyed playing with mentchies as a child, so I understood their appeal and knew the idea had merits!

What was your next step? How did you bring this dream to fruition? I had no access to China, but my mother got me in touch with an acquaintance, Mr. Hershy Hoffman of Gigatent, who was extremely enthusiastic about the idea of bringing Yiddish toys to 78

our kids. We set out to build our mentchees based on the characters featured on our CDs, and thus we created a world of play for our children. An interesting story took place at this point, and I think you can say that this also helped turn the Mitzvah Kinder into a full-fledged business. My husband and I were the parents of six lovely girls at the time, but we had no boys. My husband went in to Reb Naftulche, zt”l, of Bobov for a bracha to merit a son, and the Rav said, “Ir vet huben kinder uhn kinder, uhn nuch kinder!” You’ll have children and children, and more children! After the Rav passed away, we realized that the year we received this bracha was the year we launched our Mitzvah Kinder. (And baruch Hashem, we were soon also blessed with a baby boy!)

Who drew the characters? And are they designed as 2D or 3D? Mrs. Miriam Silberman did the original drawings, but as Mitzvah Kinder grew, we found that we needed to upgrade to newer technology to help our products reach their fullest potential. Our director of graphics Baily Biederman soon suggested that we change all of our mentchee renderings to 3D. “Then we’ll see what we’ll use them for!” she said. 3D art requires a tremendous level of skill and is very costly. that point we were working on a different project, and it suddenly fell apart. We were due to pay for the 3D upgrade, and the profits we’d been relying on to help us offset the cost were gone. B’siyata d’Shmaya, that’s when the idea to produce a book came to the fore, and it turned out to be a huge hit. Our first book followed our Shabbos story featuring the famous Mr. Kapalovsky, and it took off from there! The books are both child-friendly and adult-friendly, so repeat views keep having kids finding new details. Like in the Pesach book, there’s a kitten that follows garbage cans around Mitzvah Kinder Town, and when the cans are finally empty at the end of the story, we can see the kitten sitting in the window and eating matzah. These little details make reading about Shabbos and yom tov so exciting! But the quality is worth it; it keeps the kids hungry for more.

Do all of your mentchees have names? Who names them? Most of them have names, and we have to be careful when we produce a book to make sure that we don’t use wrong names or repeat any. And we all help out with the naming. Besides myself and Baily, there’s also my kids, Baily’s son Shimon… they all love giving ideas. Sometimes we look at a mentchee and say, “She’s such a Chanie!” And then we get really attached to them as they grow into the characters they are. CHANIE

What was the first toy accompaniment you produced? Our Shabbos set. It was a big hit, as the kids were now able to enact a Shabbos scene with the mentchees, making them a complete toy. Some mothers would save it for Shabbos, and it became a special Shabbos toy.

Which products are most popular? At this point it’s pretty hard to say. Once kids have one thing, they want the next thing to grow their collection. Some products are out of stock due to the shipping mess created by COVID-19, and now that we’re getting so many calls requesting them, we see how beloved they each are. Still, I’d say the bucket, the Shabbos set, the dollhouse and its accessories, and now the books are our most popular products.

Are there any products you’ve phased out? We phased out the wedding set. It was too costly to produce, and we couldn’t sell enough to offset what we’d invested.

What is your favorite mentchee? It’s hard to choose… It may seem strange, but when we work on our books, we eat them and sleep them to the point where I hear the characters talking to me when I’m out in the street! Zeidy and Bubby at the grocery, Mrs. Brull in the store… and they’re always so nice and kind to one another. I get pretty attached to them! Now I love our new Chanie mentchee. She’s full of spunk, wears this cute beanie, and she’ll be the one eating all the nosh at the party or getting into trouble by mistake. I just love her! I actually think she’s very much like me [laughs]. Otherwise, it’s really hard for me to choose.

What is the most-loved mentchee among your young customers?

M R . K A PA L OV S K Y

Our most-loved mentchee, hands down, is Mr. Kapalovsky. Speaking 80

of names, this character sounded so Russian that that’s the name he got! At a business show once where we exhibited our products, we saw two people looking our way and laughing. Finally they came over to tell us that as Shluchim living in China, they had a steady Shabbos guest… by the name of Mr. Kapalovsky! We all shared a laugh at that tale.

Which mentchee was the most difficult to design? The new father mentchee holding a baby was the most difficult to produce. It’s created from two separate molds, and besides for the difficulty of the weight being distributed properly so it doesn’t tip over, the baby also kept coming apart from the father. It actually kept up production for a year. Then, after production, we found that it still hadn’t been attached properly, so we had to open all packages to reglue them. That kept us up another two months. Our Lag Ba’omer set contains another father figure that was difficult to create; the child on the father’s shoulders also meant difficulty in figuring out the distribution of weight. But that’s where 3D comes in. With that technology, it’s possible to figure out how to design something of top quality.

Have you ever gotten any special requests from customers? People always want to replace mentchees they’ve lost and want to know if they can purchase them separately. Unfortunately, they come prepackaged in sets, so it isn’t possible to purchase just one piece on its own, even though we know how much every single mentchee means to the children who can’t help but love them! 82

Can you imagine childhood without dolls? Neither can I. And evidently, neither could the generations throughout history! Granted, the dolls of past millennia may not have resembled the dolls of today, but being the most basic of playthings, it is conjectured that the oldest toy of all time was the doll. Let’s take a stroll down the nostalgic road paved with doll hair and frills and explore some of the popular dolls of the past century.

Early Dolls The construction and appearance of dolls have evolved and improved with time, with dolls taking on more human-like characteristics with each new development in manufacturing and industrialization. Dolls were originally crafted from whatever materials were available in a given era and area. They’ve been crafted of clay, bone or wood, and have also been constructed from material scraps, creating what we know as rag dolls. Archaeologists have even unearthed wooden paddle dolls in Egyptian tombs, and the earliest dolls with movable limbs and removable clothing have been dated to around 200 BCE.

Porcelain Dolls Improving upon its predecessor, the glazed china doll, the porcelain doll is fashioned from bisque porcelain, with a more realistic matte skin tone. These became widely popular in France and Germany in the late 1800s, initially as children’s toys and later as collectibles. They were intricately styled with painted porcelain hair. Over time the hair saw improvements, with many dolls even sporting real hair. At first, these skillfully crafted dolls were targeted for children of the upper class. Around the turn of the 19th century, with production becoming more efficient and cheaper materials becoming more readily available, porcelain dolls became more accessible, and the dolls’ faces took on more realistic, childlike expressions. Toys in general were not as abundant a century or two ago as they are today, and these dolls were usually passed down to younger family members, turning into keepsakes. Often, their wardrobes would be updated to reflect the fashion of the time. These porcelain dolls soon began to phase out as more resilient materials, such as plastic and vinyl, allowed for more practical, durable play. Now, antique porcelain dolls can rake in quite a sum as a popular and valuable collector’s item.

Raggedy Ann Created by American writer Johnny Gruelle, Raggedy Ann is a character starring in a series of wildly successful books he wrote and illustrated, beginning in 1918. Iconic for her red yarn hair and triangular nose, Raggedy Ann was the first to be created, and she was joined by her brother Raggedy Andy two years later. The doll itself came about when the writer’s daughter brought him a worn rag doll one day, and he brought it to life by drawing a new face. Raggedy Ann, an affordable, homespun doll, appeared in great contrast to the fragile porcelain and unrealistic fashion dolls of earlier days, and she appealed to people with her simplicity and relatability. This classic American character is notably known for the heart stamped on her chest. According to the book How Raggedy Ann Got Her Candy Heart, a house painter and his wife repaired Raggedy Ann after she fell into a bucket of paint, and then sewed a red candy heart into the repair stitching. From then on, candy hearts were sewn into the dolls, but they were discontinued after complaints that the candy made the dolls sticky. When they were removed, however, the public couldn’t bear to see Raggedy Ann without her heart, so the heart came back in various ways, most notably as the current heart imprint. Unbeknownst to many, Raggedy Ann wasn’t always a redhead. She was actually a brunette at birth, but her hair was changed to a flaming red in a display of patriotism during the world wars. The red hair, along with her blue and white outfit, turned her into the all-American icon we know her as today.

Cabbage Patch Whether you think they’re adorable or ugly, Cabbage Patch became a household name during the ’80s. Those who remember the Cabbage Patch craze will likely tell you that they loved them, hated them — or simply didn’t identify with the hype that surrounded them. Initially called “The Little People” (not to be confused with Fisher Price Little People) and marketed as collectibles by Xavier Roberts, Cabbage Patch got its official name when it was superbly pitched to the wider public in 1982. By the 1983, the marketing response resulted in a major turnout that caused serious rioting, with adults clamoring to get their hands on one of those coveted dolls. One woman even suffered a broken leg from the mayhem that resulted from the clash between the great demand and insufficient supply in the stores. Controversy aside, and to be fair to Cabbage Patch fans, what was so special and enticing about these Cabbage Patch dolls? For starters, these weren’t dolls to be bought, but “babies up for adoption,” according to the Cabbage Patch founder. Prospective “parents” could even choose their babies in the headquarters called “Babyland General Hospital” and have them examined by the on-call LPMs — Licensed Patch Nurses. Exclusive Cabbage Patch Babies and Kids are priced between $70 and $80 and come with unique, removable clothes as well as a birth certificate. Even more deluxe options are the Handstitched Cabbage Patch Kids, each of which are perfectly unique, with no two dolls being exactly alike. Their adoption fees, however, begin at a whopping $250! Adopters have the opportunity to personalize their adoptee’s birth certificate, with their name and birthdate of choice. The dolls also have the founder’s signature imprinted on their bodies. Though these exclusive dolls are available exclusively at BabyLand General Hospital or directly from Cabbage Patch, mass-produced boxed dolls are more readily available at toy retailers. In recent years, some Cabbage Patch dolls were equipped with touch sensors and voice chips, which allowed them basic communication with those around them. Some even mimic less pleasant lifelike sounds like burps. While some folks delight in these features, others find them downright creepy. Cabbage Patch maintained a toy sales record for three consecutive years before the hype slowly fizzled out, as fads do. The Cabbage Patch family name was tarnished when Martha Nelson of Doll Babies filed a lawsuit against Cabbage Patch, alleging that Xavier Roberts profited off of her original works and ideas. This custody battle was ultimately settled quietly, though it left permanent scars on the Cabbage Patch heritage.

DIY Doll Restoration

‫שתצילנו‬

Dolls may retain their original beauty when left untouched on their pedestals, but if your dolls have been loved so intensely that they’re barely recognizable, we have some tips to help you restore their beauty. To clean the skin, the ever-reliable magic eraser is the most simple and effective way to go. Wet the magic eraser, squeeze, and wipe away years of filth. Be careful not to scrub around the eye/mouth or any other painted areas to avoid erasing them. Rinse with a wet cloth and dry. To deal with matted hair, begin by combing the hair with a wide-toothed comb, starting from the edges and working your way up. Shampoo the hair well with Dawn dish soap and rinse. Condition the hair using fabric softener, then rinse. A widely used method to revive doll hair is to give it a hot water bath. To do this, boil hot water and then allow it to cool for five to ten minutes to avoid burns. Then dip the hair into the hot water for five seconds, remove from the hot water, then dip again for five seconds. Repeat this a few times to help soften the hair. To avoid damage, don’t leave the hair in the hot water for too long, and test a small section to ensure the hair can withstand this process before proceeding with the entire head of hair. Once a doll’s hair is all repaired, it’s time for a beauty treatment! To perm doll hair, first put the hair into rollers, and then follow with the hot water bath. Allow the hair to dry completely before removing the rollers. To straighten doll hair, use a blow dryer or a straightener on the lowest setting. Remember to test a small area first to ensure it’s safe for your doll.

C H I L D ’ S P L AY Playrooms are wonderful. I say this without levity because although setting up these rooms can log many hours of intense labor —what with decorating a roomful of things — they yield high returns in the satisfaction department. There is nothing as serenity-inducing as a pleasant, neat space with a place for each of those many playthings. And since each playroom is as unique as its host family, decorating one is a fun experience that often comes with many a playful surprise.

TH E ROOM:

Playroom THE CH ALLENGE:

The Kahans’ playroom is a small neat square with a closet that is simply not large enough to hold the crew’s extensive toy collection. Our aim was to achieve a design that’s neutral but fun, with an extra storage solution that would beautify the room without cluttering up the space.

Additional Storage This was actually the first thing I dove into. I wanted the storage piece to be low, as befits a playroom. I chose a wall-to-wall bench with cubbies underneath: functional for reading, toy storage, and an addition to the gorgeous focal wall we’d create. The toy bins in the cubbies did not need to be labeled as they all house stuffed animals — all the better for seamless, flowing decor. I left the two cubbies on either side binless, for books. I find that cubbies are a great solution where books and kids are involved.

Focal Wall Now that this adorable reading nook was coming to life, I needed decor for the focal wall behind it. The order was “cute, fun, functional and neutral.” Dusty red wallpaper checked all the boxes! Now, the showstopper on this wall is nothing a decorator can plan, but the work of the Master Artist Himself. I did not want to ruin the effect of that absolutely gorgeous trees-in-a-frame by adding window shades, or even a piece of art on either side of the window. Instead, we installed floating shelves. They add so much symmetry, balance and beauty to the focal wall. At 24 inches wide, they are neither too small nor too large, but perfectly proportioned to the walls. I styled the shelves using functional decor. These adorable dolls that greet you when you walk in can also be played with, and the same goes for the rest of the trinkets displayed. Now, for the perfect sconces. I wanted to keep the playroom light and airy because it’s small, but also fun, since it’s a room for play. I chose white sconces for their clean look, as the wallpaper is busy enough, and wood to complement the detail in the table, chairs and wicker baskets. 114

Bottom-Up Cozy We had the walls repainted from yellowish to white. I chose warm white for coziness. The floor, we decided, would remain its gray self. This shade is a cold one, though. I wanted to add a cozy effect but still honor the gray, so I brought that color into the pillow and bench, but in lighter, warmer shades. Talking about coziness, the rug we added scores a 100+ in that department. It’s a bright, airy white with a bit of gray, too. We knew that a high-pile rug is not ideal for a play area (think Playmobil pieces buried forever) but went with it anyway to maximize the softness in the room. It works, because there’s enough space on the rest of the floor for playing with little thingamajigs. Another tip for rug pile: Go low in large areas.

Fun Furniture We needed a table and chairs for the kids to color and do table-based activities, and for this I wanted white and wood. The chairs we found add a ton of character! Since symmetry is a must in my design, once the table and chairs were added, I needed to balance out the other side of the room. Here’s where a delightful surprise came in! The Kahans had an aged real kiddie piano in their attic. We’re talking vintage here: seventy years old, to be exact. The thing was dirty, scratched, and worn away in some places. You wouldn’t believe what primer and two coats of white paint did. This stunning heirloom piece is now fully rehabilitated to balance the left side of the playroom. Best of all, the keys still work! This piece is a perfect example of a design element that adds but does not overwhelm. 116

Imagine... Earth to Space If you’ve seen the first installment of this series, you know that I add plants and wood, those vital — and revitalizing! — elements to every space I work with. But… plants in a playroom? I found these really cute, playful colored faux planters you see throughout the room. They’re safe and fun and literally playthings. I got to choose colors I seldom use anywhere else; purple, pink and green. They work fabulously for this playroom.

Texture Back to that wall-to-wall bench, check out the fabric of the bench upholstery. Would you believe me if I told you it’s completely smooth to the touch? Texture adds visual interest and comfort, and there’s much of that in the carpet. A lot was banking on the bench upholstery. I wanted it to be that unexpected something that every space needs. I couldn’t do anything too crazy, though, as the wallpaper has enough going on! I didn’t want anything patterned, because again, the wall has plenty of that. But I did want some sort of tease. Oh, and I also needed it to be kid-friendly. Tall order, this! And then I found The Find. When I saw this kid-friendly, easy-to-wipedown fabric, I kept on reaching out to touch it in shock. The appearance of texture borders on optically illusory! Those shadows you think you’re seeing are just flecks of gray that blend beautifully with the floors and wallpaper. It was sort of a dare to use this fabric next to wallpaper, but this piece somehow fulfills the requirement of “different” while also flowing with the rest. This is just so many levels above solid gray leather!

Pillow Pointers: And here are some accent pillow tips for when you’re shopping: Fill them with down. Yes, down is pricier, and yes, down brings life to the pillow. It’s fluffy, cozy, and lasts a nice while without thinning out. You can tell from the “bunny ears” in a pillow if it has a high-quality fill. Another game-changer: Size up the inserts. This means that if you have 18”x18” cases, get 20” pillow inserts to really fill the cases with life.

Closet Consistency On to the crowning glory of every playroom: the toy closet. The focal wall really is tops and a feast for the eyes, but where function of the room is concerned, the closet is king. One genius thing that will keep that closet humming without a hitch is color-coding the labels of the bins according to shelves. Yep, it’s that simple. It makes cleanup a no-brainer for the kids and a lifesaver for Mommy. For additional Mommy control, all the hands-on, crafty items are high up and out of reach. Consistency is the name of the game here, pun not intended. It’s why I placed even the big cars in bins (just three per!). The closet is now uniform and gorgeous, and looking at it literally slows the heartbeat with menuchas hanefesh. The bulky toys that defy the confines of a closet are best placed against the wall that you don’t see right when you walk into the room. This lets you focus on beauty first.

You may be seriously entertaining the idea, or just swatting away the thought every night as you try to put the kids to sleep in a space that’s bursting at its seams. For many, however, it’s a prospect on the horizon: to move out to greener, and wider, pastures. What awaits you beyond city limits, in those developments, townhouses, side-by-sides and private properties in the communities popping up and expanding in the tristate area?

WEEK 1: FLATS

Week 2: Duplexes

Week 3: Private Homes

FEATURING: THE DUPLEX This week we explore the two-storied housing unit that either makes up one half of a side-by-side two-family home, or is a column in a multifamily townhouse.

Most duplexes have five bedrooms on the second level.

T H E DR AWS → There is always a firewall between units, which maximizes soundproofing as well as offers fire protection. → This type of construction offers the option of a garage, which provides both wintertime comfort and storage solutions. → When duplex plans are the same as those of the other units in the structure, it translates into monetary savings during the planning and construction stages. → The layout allows for leaving open space above the playroom or dining room for the construction of an indoor sukkah. → If the space allows for the luxury, we try to design an open interior staircase, which lends a feeling of spaciousness to the home. We will close it only when we’re very limited in space. → The fact that the home is split into two levels allows for temperature control in the sleeping and living areas separately, which makes heating and cooling the home more economical. → Additionally, having the sleeping and living areas separate optimizes home organization and allows for privacy when sleeping. → Providing that it’s allowed by local codes, the walk-in/basement level has the potential to be used as an accessory apartment, guest quarters, home office, or to extend the living space for a family room, playroom or mudroom (for which a separate ground entrance will be needed).

→ In side-by-sides, each homeowner generally has three sides of privacy (their side, and half of the front and rear), and in townhomes, there is at least one section earmarked for a specific family. → Most duplex plans include an additional room, generally used as a study. → Typically, whereas with a flat one can get away with two baths, the duplex will have at least 2.5 baths. Some duplexes will have an additional bathroom in the basement and/or ensuite in a room designated for an older child or visiting couples. → A typical duplex will generally have significantly more square footage than a typical flat. → Between the basement and the attic, storage space is usually abundant.

For the main level in duplexes, a tray ceiling look can be attained by dropping the sides of the ceiling to eight feet and keeping the center at nine.

T H E DR AW BACK S → It is more costly to build a duplex than a flat, since each unit has a separate foundation, basement and roof. → The property is shared with other homeowners, compromising privacy and making customizations, landscaping or other maintenance issues a shared decision. → The stairs between levels can be an issue when it comes to those with limited mobility, or little children. → This layout requires a lot of going up and down the stairs. Every time something is needed from the other level, or a load of laundry needs to be put in, it means trekking up or down yet again. This will sometimes cause a pileup of stuff on the stairs waiting to be taken up. → Some children are afraid to sleep alone on the upper level without the parents nearby, which can make bedtime more difficult. → Due to the open spaces, heating can end up being more costly, though it’s also more controllable level by level. → There usually isn’t a full bath on the main level.

A LOOK AT THE PLANS This floor plan and rendering is the right duplex of a Monsey two-family home. The duplex measures 3,000 square feet. In these plans, we left the space above the playroom open to allow for the construction of an indoor sukkah. There’s also a third small bathroom off one of the bedrooms that is used by guests. Another feature we included in these plans is a small deck off the master suite.

Some municipalities allow you to make two curb cuts on a property with a side-by-side, so each homeowner has their own driveway, but some will only allow a single driveway per property.

STEP BY STEP → New York State code for staircases allows for a rise of up to 8¼ inches, but this measurement is pretty uncomfortable to walk up. The ideal rise for staircases is between 7 and 7.25 inches, and that’s the measurement we generally go with. It means that more risers are needed, but it’s well worth the comfort it provides. (Some people will even do a rise of between 6.5 and 6.75 inches.) → We generally do a tread of 9 inches plus the 1-inch nosing, which comes to a total of 10 inches. → When it comes to shared staircases, the maximum allowed by code is a rise of 7 inches and a tread of 11 inches. → In the case of staircases, we try to avoid straight-run stairs at all costs, primarily because of safety concerns, but also because of convenience. We will try to design U-shaped staircases and L-shaped staircases instead. → In high-end homes, circular staircases are often used as the focal design element in a foyer. However, these are uncomfortable to walk up. In many private homes, a secondary, more-comfortable staircase will be built toward the back of the house. → While full oak staircases are an upgraded choice, those looking to save can make steps out of a combination of trex and pine and repaint them, or opt for all pine and cover it with carpet. → The upgrades and decor that can be implemented in staircases are endless. There is a huge variety of spindles on the market and many banister options. They can be made out of wood, wrought iron, or a mix of the two.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS While the ceiling’s the limit when it comes to upgrading a home, the happiest families are not necessarily those inhabiting luxurious homes. Home should be a place of warmth, love and simcha, and we often see those in small and simple spaces truly being the homemakers of the homiest dwellings.

The first paper dolls were made in France in the 18th century and were originally called “pantins.” These paper dolls utilized string to hold their joints together. This enabled them to “move.” Pantins were hand-painted, and are considered valuable to history because they provide insight into the culture and fashions of their day — as do vintage paper dolls, such as this collection from the Victorian era.

The first American paper dolls came along with a book that encouraged children to act out the scenes with the dolls.

The first paper doll to be mass manufactured was produced in 1810 by a company based in London. America caught up to the game two years later and produced their first homegrown paper doll in 1812.

Children in Pioneer America often kept their paper dolls safe by putting them between the pages of books to hold their forms. During the Great Depression, many families had little to no extra cash to splurge on toys for their kids. Paper, however, was still affordable to most, and so paper dolls were a popular, accessible toy for kids of that era.

American paper dolls were often colored in by hand by the purchaser. 138

The Boro Park View

It’s not only people that were made into paper dolls… Animal characters from books were often brought to life through paper.

The 1930s to the 1950s were considered the Golden Age of Paper Dolls. December 22, 2021

By: Ruchy Reese

One manufacturer in the 1880s added crepe paper to their costumes to give their outfits added dimension. Paper dolls were so popular in the past that department stores would print paper dolls featuring their styles for sale, and magazines would print paper dolls in advertisements for items such as coffee, flour, sewing machines or soap.

The first known magazine to include paper dolls printed the doll in black and white and included a page of costumes for kids to color. The most recent? Flip over to our paper dolls included in this week’s issue — a gift for you by The Boro Park View! The most common form of paper dolls features cut-out clothing that attaches to the body of the doll with folded paper tabs. A different style features two-sided clothing that attaches to the paper doll by the neck-hole. Many early paper dolls had the clothing attached with drops of sealing wax.

People really like their paper dolls… In 2013, a world record for the longest chain of paper dolls was set, with 45,282 paper dolls creating a chain that measured almost 15,000 feet in length!

Vintage paper dolls can still be found when going through old papers, and they can fetch a pretty penny. In fact, the first paper doll manufactured in America recently went on sale for $695…

Today’s paper dolls often use Higher-Quality supplies, such as metal joints and layers of paper. < To add to the fun of paper doll play, some manufacturers also produce pop-up houses. Check out the closet for the dolls’ clothing!
