(Re: Space for Play: Issue 114) Thank you for this fun (and nostalgic!) issue. Like everyone and their first cousin, I had my kids home with the flu this past week, and your doll-centered issue was such a treat. My kids loved looking at the gorgeous 3D illustrations of the Mitzvah Kinder and hearing about how they came into existence. The doll collection was also lovely, and they did not stop looking at the enticing pictures time and again. The cut-out activity, as well, was so timely and too cute for words! Thank you for the entertainment. An Appreciative Mother

(Re: Bucketfuls of Play, Issue 114) I’ll always be a child at heart, so Mitzvah Mentchees was created for me. Besides owning them and giving them as gifts, I’ve unknowingly become part of the “Mishpacha”! There was great excitement in our family when I was at first introduced — what a famous grandmother I am! I was hoping to read in the article, though, how I got the job at the grocery store. Does anyone in the industry actually know me? Mrs. R. Brull
THE LOOK WE WANT
(Re: Welcome to My Home, Issue 114) I can’t get enough of Dee Interior’s beautiful projects! They are so eye-pleasing; I just can’t stop looking at the photos. A beautiful, wellmaintained space brings so much harchavas hadaas and a sense of calm into a home. My kids all decided that this is exactly how they want

WHERE ARE THE EYESORES?
(Re: Welcome Home, Issue 114) I scrutinized every nook and cranny of this dreamy playroom with a not-so-slight twinge of envy. But as I was going to make a plan of action for my home, I noticed that all those sore thumbs that make up the mess in my playroom are actually missing in the Kahans’ glamorous pictures! Where are those functional and halfwayfunctional doll carriages? Where is that cumbersome highway for the trucks? Where are all the dolls and their highchairs? Where are those shtreimels and tichels for dress-up fun? Where are the pogo sticks and jumping toys? And what about the card games and board games? A Frustrated Homemaker DEVOIRY SIGAL RESPONDS: I understand your frustration! Every home has big, bulky toys, which is why I wrote that the big toys should be lined up against the least visible wall. In this playroom we put the bulky toys in a separate closet off the playroom and the games in uniform containers on the shelves.
CAN I COOK IT SLOW?
(Re: Instant Pot Hits the Spot, Issue 113) Thank you for an amazing publication. I loved the pressure-cooking recipes, but do not own an Instant Pot. Can you provide cooking times and instructions for making these recipes on a stovetop or slow cooker? Also, the design series is amazing! R.W. RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS: These recipes were developed specifically for pressure cooking. Using Accepting dresses & gowns in mint condition at our boutique.

SPACE FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE
(Re: Welcome Home, Issue 113) Thank you for providing our community with such quality literature. I was excited to find your article about renovations. I’d like to comment on the comparison of beautifying our homes to the Beis Hamikdash’s grandeur. As we create a spacious, comfortable home, let us not forget that while we await the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash, our focus should not be about making ourselves comfortable in our temporary dwellings in galus, but rather about using the space to enable us to serve Hashem through simcha and harchavas hadaas. Thank you again for this great weekly read. May we merit to make choices that will bring us nearer to the day we are all waiting for, bimheirah b’yameinu amen. Y.R.
WAITING FOR OUR HOME
(Re: Diagram by Design, Issue 113) I am thoroughly enjoying the very detailed and well-researched home architecture series, and the ending remarks are especially appreciated. It is a crucial reminder that ultimately, “home is where the heart is.” And, indeed, let us not get lost along the way… To those who are in the process of renovating, redecorating, moving — or hoping to be there soon (me!), let me share with you my constant tefillah: “Tatte! Your blueprint is ready! Your space-planning is complete. The precise material, color scheme, and look — they’re all done. Top craftsmanship! Please get Your Home ready. And may we be zoche to live there soon.” A Temporary Dweller

MELTDOWN The streets can be dangerous!” Yochanan turned around and found himself looking into the face of the very businessman he had come to see. As soon as he found his tongue, he shared the events of the evening, down to the last detail of his humiliating discharge from the hotel lobby. “Oy!” The businessman clucked in true empathy. “Come inside; you’ll be my guest tonight.” The two walked back into the hotel together, and the businessman marched straight to the front desk where he ordered a private room for Yochanan. “We’ll talk over breakfast tomorrow morning,” he promised. Indeed, after hearing Yochanan’s tale the following morning, the businessman wrote out a hefty check. Yochanan thanked his benefactor and turned to leave. As he walked out of the hotel doors for a second time, he couldn’t help but realize — his very moment of despair was in fact his moment of salvation. Just as he was thrown out of the hotel in the darkest of night, the doors of hope were being cranked open for him. Had he not met the businessman specifically at that moment of distress, the outcome of his efforts would surely have been very different. Often that darkest moment, the one that seems to us to be absolutely terrible, is actually the harbinger of our yeshuah.
It was a cold night, and the frigid air matched Yochanan’s frozen emotions.

* * * * * As the leader of Klal Yisroel, Moshe was entitled and obligated to daven to Hashem for the load to be lightened. The problem with Moshe Rabbeinu’s question was in the wording. By using the expression of “harei’osah,” which contains the root “ra,” or bad, he insinuated that the results of his initial actions were bad. With Hakadosh Baruch Hu, there is no ra. At times it may be hard to see this and we may have questions, but the underlying point remains fixed: Hashem never does “bad.” Everything is good; we just aren’t capable of seeing the good in the situation yet. As misfortunate and bleak as circumstances may seem, there is good hidden below, even if it is currently obscured from our view.
Did You Know? As Makkas Barad hailed havoc upon Mitzrayim, a frightened Pharaoh summoned Moshe Rabbeinu, begging him to daven for the hail to stop. Moshe agreed, and no sooner had he lifted his arms heavenward than the plague stopped. Hashem had prepared a specific measure of punishment for Pharaoh, and the remainder that was cut short through Moshe’s tefillah was to be rained down upon Klal Yisroel’s enemies in the future.

Citing COVID-19 Concerns, Adams Postpones Inauguration Never one to stand on ceremony, Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced plans last week to postpone his inauguration indefinitely in light of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. Adams had been planning a joint inauguration along with Comptroller-elect Brad Lander and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams on January 1 at the Kings Theater in Flatbush. Hamodia reported that Adams scheduled his inauguration for the night in order to accommodate guests and members of the media who would not be able to attend a daytime event that would have taken place on a Shabbos. A statement released by the three read, “Dear fellow New Yorkers, it is clear that our city is facing a formidable opponent in the Omicron variant of COVID-19, and that the spike in cases presents a serious risk to public health. After consulting with public health experts, we have decided that our joint inauguration ceremony will be postponed to a later date in order to prioritize the health of all who were planning to attend, cover, and work on this major event.” According to NBC News, Adams was never in favor of a large inaugural gala. “I don’t need anything at all,” said Adams. “All I need to do is move my mattress to Gracie Mansion and sleep on the floor.” Adams made headlines during the pandemic when he moved into Borough Hall to help Brooklynites better weather the crisis. Adams gave NY1 a tour of his living quarters in May 2020, showing off his twin mattress on his office floor, as well as an air fryer, a slow cooker, a hotplate, an iron, assorted pots and pans and a clothes closet that he built himself. The mayor-elect has said that if his inauguration was ultimately canceled, he would donate the money that would have been used for a party to charity instead.
Rising to the Top, Yarmulka-Wearing Officer Promoted to Inspector At 39 years old, Richie Taylor isn’t just one of the youngest members of the NYPD to have been promoted to the rank of inspector; he is also the first Orthodox Jew to reach that rank, just one level below chief. A yeshivah graduate and a former Hatzolah member, Richie Taylor is also known as Yechiel, reported Hamodia. He joined the NYPD in 2005, quickly rose through the ranks, and is currently the commanding officer of community affairs outreach at the Office of the Chief of Community Affairs. A Marine Park resident, Taylor was awarded the Cop of the Month award by the 61st 50

Precinct in September 2016 for making a firearm arrest on his own. Taylor was one of four deputy inspectors promoted to inspector. NYPD Chief Ed Delatorre said that he had known Taylor for ten years. “You can’t know him and not love him,” said Delatorre. “His heart’s in the right place. His integrity is second to no one else, and he’s honorable, which is so key in any friendship, any working relationship.”
Pills To Treat COVID-19 Debut, Albeit With Caveats Two drugs newly authorized by the Food and Drug Administration will help recently infected individuals beat back COVID-19, reducing the chances of severe or fatal reactions to the virus. ABC News reported that regulators greenlighted Pfizer and Merck’s COVID-19 pills in mid-December. Both were shown to benefit high-risk patients who contracted the virus, but needed to be started within five days of symptoms appearing. The federal government is buying up Pfizer’s Paxlovid and Merck’s molnupiravir pills, which are expected to be effective against the Omicron variant. Initial supplies will be limited at first, and will be available by prescription only at pharmacies, community health centers and other locations. Infected individuals will need to take the pills for five days, and they will be available free of charge. The new pills are intended for those who are likely to suffer serious effects from COVID-19, including the elderly and those with heart disease, cancer or diabetes. While Paxlovid is authorized for children ages twelve and up, it isn’t recommended for those with severe kidney or liver problems or those taking statins, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, steroids and some antidepressants, reported NBC News. Molnupiravar is authorized exclusively for adult use and only for patients where other treatments such as monoclonal antibodies are not available or are deemed inappropriate. Twenty-one months into the pandemic, Peter Anderson, professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, hailed Paxlovid’s potential.

As Omicron Continues, Israel Attempts To Keep It at Bay With Israel doing its best to keep the latest COVID-19 variant at bay, a statement written last week in the name of Rav Chaim Kanievsky calls on parents to vaccinate their schoolage children. According to Yeshiva World News, the statement was reviewed by Rav Chaim and says “vaccines should be ordered at Talmud Torahs and schools, and the children should be vaccinated.” Pediatric vaccination rates in Israel have been low, with just 10% of all five- to eleven-year-olds taking the shot. Those numbers are significantly lower in the charedi community, with just 1.9% of children in the same age group being vaccinated. Israel had been considering a fourth round of booster shots for older residents and those at higher risk, but that plan has been tabled at least for now as the Ministry of Health continues reviewing infection and hospitalization rates. Meanwhile, Israel has been seriously considering relaxing its very tight travel restrictions that have 68 countries, including the United States, listed as high-risk areas. According to Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, travel regulations will be eased when it becomes clear that Omicron is being spread communally in Israel and not through travel.

With proof of vaccination mandates taking effect in workplaces, private schools and many other locations, New York has taken steps to head off those who are looking to game the system by making falsifying vaccination cards a criminal offense. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the legislation into law last week; this made forging a COVID-19 vaccination card by hand a class D felony, and doing so digitally a class E felony. The governor noted that those misrepresenting their vaccination history jeopardize their health as well as those they interact with. State Senator Anna Kaplan, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, said that the Omicron variant made the law a necessity. “It’s never been more urgent that we protect this process from fraud so that the health and safety of the public isn’t compromised by bad actors using fraudulent vaccine cards or passports,” said Kaplan. The ease and speed with which New Yorkers have been able to procure fake vaccination cards has been astonishing, noted Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who introduced the bill in the Assembly. “This new law will undoubtedly help prosecutors and other law enforcement hold people accountable for the damage they are doing to public health by undermining the efficacy of vaccination requirements in workplaces, businesses, restaurants and more,” said Dinowitz.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT RECAP: Ariella
feels very uncomfortable with Aliza’s strange tendencies and contemplates leaving. Reb Elazar asks the boys to let him know if they see anyone suspicious-looking hanging around the yeshivah.
A
riella sat on a bench in the local park. It was completely deserted at this early hour on Sunday morning. Right opposite her was the wall that had already become very familiar to her, and she wondered whether Rabbi Reiness would bring his boys here this morning. It hadn’t been this mild and sunny in quite a while. She fingered the green necklace she’d made with Aliza last week. She had no idea why she’d pushed it into her pocketbook a minute before she left, as if these stones could shed some light on the very cloudy picture named Aliza. She’d spent her Shabbos closeted in her room, eating the food that she’d bought. It was actually just fine, not any worse than it had been the previous Shabbos in the Abramov home. Yet she felt like the four walls were choking her. Aliza, too, had hardly been home, both on Friday afternoon nor on Shabbos, and when she was home, there was no way to tell that it was Shabbos. Which traditional woman did not light Shabbos candles? It was quite bizarre; the woman covered her hair, but didn’t light Shabbos candles! And it wasn’t like there was a shortage of matches in the house or anything; Aliza had had plenty for her orange candles… Ariella’s lips twisted into a wry smile at the memory of that incident. Now, a few days later, the whole thing seemed rather amusing to her. But when it had occurred, it had been most unpleasant. So what should she do now? Start looking for a new place all over again? Zahava had called last night, Motzei Shabbos,

to ask her again about that shidduch, the widower with the child in her playgroup. She noted that Ariella sounded good, much better than she’d been sounding lately, but her little prelude was clearly meant to soften Ariella up. Ariella knew it was so because immediately after that, Zahava admitted that her mother-in-law was nudging her about the shidduch. “And his son is so sweet,” Zahava had added. “You just saw a little bit when you were here on Rosh Chodesh. He’s not only clever, Ariella; he also has a heart of gold, really!” “I’m happy to hear that,” Ariella had responded flatly. “But do you think his father is the only widower in the world? The second-time-around market is full, unfortunately… But thanks for thinking of me.” “And him,” Zahava had pointed out. “Put it however you want,” Ariella had said. And in contrast to the last time Zahava had discussed the matter with her, she had not hurried to end the conversation. Instead, she’d listened to the outpouring of words and praises with relative patience, and then she’d elegantly segued into a rapt description of the breathtaking scenery in Acco. Now Ariella placed the necklace on the bench beside her and straightened it into a long line. Perhaps she needed to rent a small studio apartment, just for herself. This way she wouldn’t have to depend on the goodwill of others, and their overly congenial or inscrutable personalities. She could have a kitchen to herself, and all the privacy she wanted — really, everything she had in her little home in Bnei Brak. But if she was planning to actually settle here for a while, she’d have to think of a way to earn an income. It wasn’t fair to have her parents fund her stay here, especially as she’d already seen that Rabbi Reiness and his wife were very fine people. Indeed, her parents were much calmer now. Osher had even called them himself two or three times, so everything was actually good on that front. So why should her parents support a daughter who had decided to abscond to Acco simply because she loved the distance and the placid nature of the place? They’d always said that Osher was a lot like her...

***** Bassi went out to the clotheslines strung between two trees in her yard. Winter rays of sun cast bright circles on the exposed ground, but apparently, they were not strong enough to dry the laundry. The clothes hanging on the line were still quite damp; only the socks were dry. Bassi took them off the line and tossed them into the basket, only to realize that very little space and very few clothespins had been freed up for the new load of wet laundry. A dryer might not be a bad solution, she knew, but just the thought of the static electricity on her hands when she emptied the dryer gave her the chills. All those dryer sheets — and she’d tried quite a few brands — were useless. Her dryer had stood idle for years, and she’d given it away before they’d moved. But in her last apartment she’d had a sun-drenched porch, even in the winter. Here, in the shadow of the trees, the winter sun could barely penetrate. It was really because of the shade that they’d chosen to build their house here; without that shade, Aryeh had told her, they would be hot most

days of the year. She chose the items she needed most urgently, and crowded them onto the laundry line. The rest of the clothes would have to wait. She’d put some of them on the radiator in the dining room, and spread the rest over nearby chairs. A short wail broke the silence. She hurried toward the house, but the baby
plant-based pill, because she knew that this was what she had to do. Perhaps she should continue giving Gadi the sage, and give it to the other children, as well. The plant had many other positive qualities, aside from improving concentration. She needed to find that brochure Miriam had given to her and read it from beginning to end instead of focusing only on the parts that applied to Gadi. The ones that reminded her of herself. Just then her phone rang. It was Aryeh. But why would he be calling her at this hour of the day? “It’s Yisroel Meir,” he said, before she even had a chance to ask. “He fell in cheder. I’m on the way to the emergency room.”
It was quite bizarre; the woman covered her hair, but didn’t light Shabbos candles!

was sleeping deeply; she must have cried out in her sleep. Bassi smiled. If she hadn’t been used to this from her other children, she would have been sure it was some abandoned animal cub that Gadi had decided to adopt. “Bassi?” Her neighbor Miriam was holding a full laundry basket in one arm and waving out the window with the other. “Hi, Miriam!” Bassi waved back. How are you?” “Baruch Hashem, great. I just wanted to tell you that I got a delivery, so I’m restocked with sage. You asked me to tell you when I get some more, right?” “Oh, right,” Bassy said, and then was quiet. She’d read a lot about sage and its properties, and for a long time, she’d doggedly given Gadi teaspoon after teaspoon of the stuff. But what could she do if nothing compared to the miracles they were seeing as the result of the tiny pill that Gadi had begun to take each morning? His appetite wasn’t great, that was true, but it had never been. So he was still short and very skinny, but now he could at least sit and learn, and in general just keep himself in line. It wasn’t that his character had been altered; there are some things that even pills can’t change. But the boy was starting to get used to new habits that no one would have believed he could possibly do. So there were two large containers of sage in her closet; she’d stuffed them in there in a moment of frustration. (She’d probably forgotten about them when she’d asked Miriam for the stuff.) And she gritted her teeth each morning as she gave her son a non-natural, non-
***** Night came earlier than usual. Or perhaps compared to the clear day, the cloudy night seemed gloomier and darker than usual. Ariella, who was leaning on the gate in her regular spot, glanced one last time at the two-story house with the lights in the windows. Since the boys had eaten supper in the carpentry shop, nothing interesting had happened. Most of them had gone out, as usual, and walked down the alleyway, apparently to a rented apartment where they slept. Osher was not among them. She had already realized, from previous evenings, that he and another boy — or two? — slept in the Reiness home. It was very quiet on the small street. Suddenly a window on the second floor lit up, and a shadow passed. She wondered if it was Osher. Then the shadow returned and stopped right by the window. Ariella took a deep breath. There was Osher, in the flesh, and if she was not mistaken, he was looking in her direction. He wasn’t focused on her, but if he would notice the figure leaning on the wall near the beach, and looking in the direction of the house… he might get suspicious. And might try to identify her. And might possibly succeed. She turned around calmly, gazing intently at the dark, agitated waves. Then

she stood up straight and sauntered away. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that he was still standing at the window, but she could not see if he was still looking in her direction. A moment later she crossed the street and began to double back. Finally she could see him, standing in one place like in a storefront window, as if waiting for her to study him from head to toe and decide whether or not she needed to worry. Right next to the Reiness’ fence was an old aluminum hut, perhaps still from the days of the Ottomans. Ariella leaned onto it; it partially concealed her from view. From where she stood, she looked her brother over carefully. He was wearing the same velvet yarmulke as he wore at home, the same glasses, and the sweater their mother had purchased for him a year earlier. She could not tell which collar was peeking out from the sweater, but it was pretty clear that it was a white, buttondown, yeshivish-style shirt. Unlike some of the other boys who had left the house earlier. Wait, who was ironing his shirts for him? She often used to do it. Actually, he also knew how to iron, and now in the winter, when he wore a sweater, the ironing didn’t have to be perfectly done anyway. Still… Osher moved suddenly. He leaned outward a bit, as if trying to get a better look at something. Ariella quickly turned her head to the side and again stared at the sea. A moment later, attempting to appear natural, she retreated entirely behind the aluminum hut. She kept close to the wall for a few long moments. Then, just as she was about to peek out cautiously to check if he was still there, she heard a familiar voice saying in the stillness, “I’m going downstairs for a minute to check on something. I’ll be right back.” Ariella did not wait for that minute to pass. She quickly slipped into the alleyway, walking briskly and quietly, ignoring the sounds coming from the Arab homes she was passing. This was not Aliza’s street; it ran parallel to that one. But with her good sense of direction, hopefully she’d find a way back to her rented room without having to come face to face with Osher. She’d have to hurry, though, because he was faster than she was. And if he would see her and get upset that she’d followed him, and would then disappear again, she would not be able to forgive herself.
It was very quiet on the small street. Suddenly a window on the second floor lit up, and a shadow passed. She wondered if it was Osher.

Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

Setting the Record Straight “We read The Boro Park View every week. We enjoy it immensely!” the letter in our inbox read. “However, in one of your recent articles on keeping warm with blankets during winter months, it said that quilts today are for decoration and display only. I must disagree! cient art of quilting, one that is shared by more people than you can imagine. One glance at any piece of her quilting is enough to recognize the love she imbues into every stitch that comprises the stunning patterns and designs she arranges at whim: Each item is an experience you will not soon forget.
Sewing Through Pain… And Hope Malka began her relationship with needle and thread when she was just five years old. A daughter of Holocaust survivors,
she was given the very clear message that having a skill or craft is not only useful when living in other countries, but could be vital to survival as well. (This proved to be prophetic, as Malka would later see when she moved to the United States.) Malka’s mother was talented at embroidery, cooking and baking, and her father was a craftsman who made matzeivos (including his own!). Living only two miles from the Jordanian border, Arabs would sometimes infiltrate their neighborhood, and when Malka’s parents needed to leave the house, they instructed the children to remain inside for safety reasons. In those moments, Malka was content to embroider
away. When the time came, her parents encouraged her to attend fashion school. She was entranced by textures, patterns and the vibrancy of colors. While Malka’s parents supported her in every way, her mother was her biggest fan and would often express amazement at Malka’s extraordinary abilities. Many years later, when her mother passed on, Malka put down her needle and thread. Losing her mother was a lasting ache, and she simply couldn’t go near her sewing machine. Over time, she considered picking up sewing again — but something was missing, and it would be two whole years until December 29, 2021

Malka could fill the void. One day, while shopping for groceries, Malka noticed a quilting magazine and immediately bought a subscription. Two years after her mother’s passing, the quilting world was tugging at her heart. Amazingly, Malka learned how to quilt on her own, from the articles in the magazine as well as tutorials. Malka’s passion was back and ready to make the world a brighter, more loving place.
the best machine that would manifest her quilting goals. She told him about the Bernina, a sewing machine that gives more room between the needle and machine itself, making it easy to pull a quilt through. He stressed that the most important investment for one’s craft is to have the equipment needed to create a superior product. When he passed away and left her with a yerusha, Malka saw the opportunity to buy the machine — just as her father had wanted her to do.

Spreading a World of Color
Malka’s father became ill and needed to reside in a rehab facility in Eretz Yisroel, and even as he declined, he encouraged Malka’s craft. When she showed him a baby quilt, he expressed his pleasure at seeing her heart opening once again. As a craftsman, Malka’s father implored her to purchase

“He may tell me to switch around things, add things here or there,” says Malka, “and it’s especially helpful when it comes to letters, where I simply cannot make a mistake.” But as Malka says, humans aren’t perfect. “Only malachim don’t make mistakes. I can’t say that each quilt is 100 percent perfect. Embroidery stitches are evenly spaced, not perfect. So it’s perfect imperfection!” Malka also mentions that she was bothered by the comment that quilts are currently being used only as wall hangings. “I had the pleasure of attending the international quilt show in Houston, Texas, in 2005,” she says. “It was an experience of a lifetime. There were thousands and thousands of handmade quilts. Some were from the 1800s and completely made by hand. There were so many quilts to see, and people use them on their beds. They’re very heavy and warm.”

Sewing Malka’s Magic
Her Heart in Every Stitch While Malka puts her heart and soul into every stitch, she also gives generously when she’s moved to help someone in a difficult time. During the lockdown, there was a man who wanted to donate fabric to be sewn into masks as a merit for his son, who had just passed away from COVID-19. A friend connected him with Malka, who eagerly took on the task. Soon, hundreds of her beautifully detailed, hand-sewn masks landed in Good Sam Hospital. It turns out that this man who made the donation is a representative for a well-known fabric company. Later, he thanked Malka for her efforts and men-
While Malka embroiders and appliques by hand, she prefers to use the machine to piece together the blocks of fabric. Whether by machine or hand, Malka infuses a bit of her heart and soul into every stitch. While Malka can make anything, from wall hangings to bags to wallets, her greatest joy is working on baby quilts. “Hashem gave me the gift to create,” says Malka. “Whether I’m making a quilt, table runner or anything in between, I don’t go by rules of color. It
was cold and rainy — a windwh ippi n gyou r-b ones kind of cold, typical of a true winter day in Eretz Yisroel. The Haifa streets were quiet, aside from the constant pitterpatter of the steady droplets that were washing the streets clean. From time to time, a person wrapped in full winter gear would appear, rushing to reach their destination before the water seeped through their every layer. With such strong winds, no umbrella could last more than a few moments. I peered out the window of the beis medrash, glad for the dry haven the yeshivah walls provided. The daf Gemara swathed me in a cozier warmth than usual, and I turned to my chavrusa with an extra burst of cheshek. Just as I was leaving the beis medrash for lunch break, a bachur slapped me on my back and said, “Fried, someone is waiting for you outside.” Outside? I could not fathom who in the world could be standing outside in this downpour. Besides, I knew practically no one in Haifa, where my yeshivah was. This must be some kind of mistake, I thought as I rushed to the front entrance. The person had moved inside and was standing bent over on the front mat, with rivulets of water dripping from his waterlogged jacket. His plastic-covered hat was pulled low to his face, trickling raindrops down to the floor. I did a double take. “Tatte?” I asked incredulously. “What brings you here?” The ride from Yerushalayim to Haifa in those days
entailed a four-hour journey by public transport. My father had never before visited me in yeshivah, and now here he was, on this bitter winter day! Was there something important he needed to say that could not be shared over the telephone? An uneasy question rose in my mind. But my father’s broad smile quickly assured me that everything was okay. He asked me to show him my room in the dorm and soon we were walking together through the yeshivah halls, my father’s footsteps leaving a wet trail wherever we went. In my room, I helped my father peel off his soaking jacket and rushed to bring him a hot drink so he could defrost a bit from the freezing outdoors. “How are you doing?” my father asked between sips. Then he began to ask me about every aspect of yeshivah life. He wanted to hear how things were working out with my chavrusas, with the rosh yeshivah’s shiur, with my friends and roommates. He looked around at the dormitory accommodations and inquired about the food and other technical aspects of my day-to-day life. For close to an hour, we schmoozed. I enjoyed spending time with my father, but deep down, I was waiting for the punchline. What was the real reason for this visit? Soon my father stood up and walked over to his jacket. He fished inside the pocket
and pulled out something small, round, and wrapped in newspaper. He turned to the second pocket and took out another round package. “Here,” he said as he handed me the two packages. “This is what I came for. I wanted to give you these.” I opened the paper and found two jelly doughnuts, with hardly any powdered sugar left. Somehow, deep inside the pockets of my father’s jacket, they’d stayed perfectly dry. I thanked him profusely and ate them both on the spot. Meanwhile, my father shook his raincoat from the raindrops that remained and put it back on. Then he put his hat back in the plastic bag and turned to leave. “Tatte,” I said as soon as I finished eating my treats. “Before you go, come! Let me show you around. Surely the mashgiach and my maggid shiur will be happy to give you a report. You can ask them how I’m doing.” But my father looked at me and said, “Yisroel, I know you are learning well. I did not need to come all the way to Haifa just to hear what I already know! That’s not why I’m here. I came just so that I could give you this little treat and tell you face-to-face how much I think of you and how much you mean to me.” And just as abruptly as he had arrived, my father left. I watched him go, retracing his steps to the bus stop where he would catch the bus for the four-hour ride back to Yerushalayim in the heavy rain. It’s nearly 30 years since that wet winter day, and those eight hours of fatherly love still melt my heart. For me, they stand out for eternity as a patch of warmth in the icy cold.

or me, winter is spelled S-O-U-P. While warm weather stirs my salad creativity, in the winter, raw veggies just don’t do it for me. And while recipes are fine sometimes, I often prefer just to wing it — sautéing some onions and garlic in the bottom of the pot, dousing that with water, and then cubing and tossing in more or less whatever the yeshivah refrigerator has in abundance that day. Of course, these experiments are sometimes more successful and sometimes less, so occasionally I’ll ask my yeshivah kitchen assistant to have a taste before letting my experiment go public. And such was the case on one winter day. “It is pretty good,” he said, nodding, after savoring a spoonful. “But it’s not as good as the best soup I never had.” He paused expectantly. “Um, don’t you mean ‘ever’ had?” I asked, feeling like I was about to walk into a well-set trap. “Nope.” The guy grinned as if to confirm my suspicions, and launched into his tale: “I’d been to some pretty unusual youth hostels in my six months of post-college European backpacking before I was frum, but one specific place took the prize.” “Sounds like there’s a story there!” I said. “Well, we were above the Arctic Circle — in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, to be exact — where the midnight sun never sank below the horizon all 24 hours of the day,” he explained. “Lacking a circadian rhythm to keep them anchored, the hostel’s clientele of budget travelers simply demarcated days and nights as they pleased. And in the communal kitchen at any given time there would be blearyeyed breakfast eaters, others garrulously gabbing over hearty lunches, and still others winding down over laidback suppers after an all-day hike — all at the same time. “Unlike some of the ‘old-timers’ who’d been staying there for weeks, I’d only arrived two days earlier and was planning to leave on the ferry that day, so I never deviated far from what my watch told me. Now it said that it was midday, and I was hungry. “The problem was that I had neither an on-hand food supply, nor the budget to obtain one. Food in Scandinavia was outrageously expensive. The markets wrapped each piece of produce individually, like jewels, and charged prices to match. “Being a bit of a showman in the kitchen, as you know” — he winked — “I flamboyantly pulled down a communaluse pot and began hacking away at a couple of carrots and celery stalks I did have, hoping to catch the notice of the crowd. And it worked…” “‘Whatcha making?’ a fellow traveler asked, peering into the pot. “‘Soup. A big, delicious soup,’ I told him. ‘Want some?’ “‘Sure. Y’know, I have a sack of baby potatoes we can put in there, too, if you want.’ “‘Why not?’ “As the first guy peeled, more folks gathered, with more offerings. Chickpeas, spices, mushrooms… the works. I stirred the ever-growing vegetable soup — now just about ready — looking forward to my first good meal in a while, when a large can loomed in front of my face.
“Suddenly… ‘Hey, if we’re going to eat, let’s at least add some meat!’ I followed the deep voice, looking up… and up… and up, at this huge German biker’s train-track smirk. The guy’s uber-loud motorcycle and his violent tattoos had made me edgy from the first time I saw him, and now he was buying into lunch with a jumbo can of genuine German pork sausages. “Considering the situation, I knew it would be very bad manners to say no to his offer — even if he hadn’t been the size of an oak tree. My fellow soup-stockholders were all for it, so I gave a little nod to the guy, who whipped out a gleaming multi-purpose knife from his leather pants, opened the can with one of the blades, and sliced its slippery contents into the soup with another. I slunk away from the pot. “‘Hey, after all that work, aren’t you going to have some?’ slurped the urbane travel buddy I’d met there. I’d been planning to travel with him via ferry to the mainland and then by train back down to Trondheim. “‘Um…’ I hedged. “As you know,” my assistant said, “I wasn’t yet keeping kosher; I didn’t even really know much about it back then. But I’d become a vegetarian over the several months prior, feeling it was healthier and somehow better for my Jewish soul. It wasn’t set in stone, though, and if someone had thrown in a little chicken or even beef I probably would have just eaten around it. But pork sausage? “‘C’mon, have some. It’s really good,’ the fellow insisted. “Everyone seemed to be enjoying it, and I was very hungry... But maybe my visit to the Dachau concentration camp on my way north was still too fresh in my mind… “‘Nah, not for me,’ I told him with a shrug. ‘You know, sometimes just the cooking is filling enough,’ I joked, hop-
“As the first guy peeled, more folks gathered, with more offerings. Chickpeas, spices, mushrooms… the works.” ing he’d let up. “‘Whatever.’ The guy eagerly scooped the last bits from his bowl. ‘I heard the boat’s already at the dock. Let’s grab our packs and head out.’ “Now, the Norwegian Sea on its calmest day is a roiling ride. The tossing ferry, together with its fragrant dieselfume bouquet made my head spin. Seeking distraction, I noticed a group of fellow passengers leaning over one of the guardrails peering into the water. Maybe they’d seen a whale or something. “But this was no sightseeing group. I walked over, just as my buddy — face green as the sea — lifted his head. ‘Whoa, I’m as sick as a dog,’ he croaked. ‘That greasy soup… bad move. Boy, were you smart to pass it up.’ “I moved down the line of heaving ex-hostelers, to see Big Biker — the cook who’d spoiled the soup — now looking more like a weeping willow than a mighty oak. And I realized that something, or Someone, much bigger than him had just given me a message. “And the rest” — my assistant waved his arm theatrically around our glatt-kosher kitchen — “is history.” Nesanel Yoel Safran is a writer, chef and student of Torah and life. A MUDROOM MADE FOR ME Winter is here, and so is the endless paraphernalia that comes with it. While the gear is warm and cozy, everything needs a place, and that’s what I wanted for the mudroom of the Katz family with their bunch of adorable kids. “A place for everything and everything in its place.” So well-worn a phrase, but true!
TH E ROOM:
Mudroom THE CH ALLENGE:
Since this mudroom is the space that greets you when you step into the Katz abode, my list of criteria for its design read like this: Pretty. Super functional. Easy to maintain. The first impression in a home really sets the mood, and a pleasant welcome lends the space serenity and joy. It was so important to get this right.
Color Compass I chose black and white to make this room attractive while keeping a neutral balance for both the boys and girls. Here, the design pops without being juvenile. “Sharp” just about clinches it!

The Closet That Has It All This closet was to be the focal point of design and function in the mudroom, and it needed careful planning to prepare it for its various roles. First, we removed the broken doors. They didn’t have to be replaced, especially since we were designing a closet interior that begged to be seen. We put up wallpaper for added interest, and I must say this one checks all the boxes: sharp, inviting, attractive and clean. Wallpaper is a real boon in decor, especially in a small space where you don’t need a lot. The personality it adds to a room makes this element worth more than the sum of its parts. In going with the super-functional theme, I knew that lots of hooks and individualized space for stuff was in order: space for the kids to hang their backpacks, space to park their boots, hooks for the kids and hanging space for the adults. What you’re seeing is actually one large closet, with that mock wall in the middle as a type of optical illusion that works well as a divider between the kids’ and adults’ areas. We added the bench to serve a multitude of functions. I wanted a place for the kids to sit when they put on their winter footwear — and a place to keep that footwear, too. And the space just looks so much more customized with this addition. I chose the wood top rather than a black one to avoid too much matching. Also, as you already know, I am a huge fan of the warmth and versatility that wood brings to a space. Moving on to the top of the closet, I initially felt that the worn hanging rod would have to go. But it was still so sturdy — it would be a waste to trash it. We painted the rod and supporting brackets black instead, and the effect is gorgeous. 112

Woods and Shoulds Rather than going with a lighter wicker, I chose the dark-colored baskets for added interest, and because, like I mentioned, I steer clear of too much matching. The highlights in these baskets pick up and complement the bench top. This is how we mix and match while still sticking to a frame of reference. The same goes for the wooden hangers that I chose. There, I brought in a different color while still being consistent with the general theme.
…And Everything in Its Place The wicker baskets really serve their function of minimizing clutter with aplomb. They’re large and deep and labeled appropriately. One is even assigned for purchase returns. The key to avoiding clutter is: Work actively to prevent it. Therefore, my goal is to preempt it by creating a place for everything. I hung magazine holders in the kids’ section and labeled each with a name. It’s such a nifty way for the kids to have their accessories handy. I also added baskets on the top of their section for extra gear, because there are always some stray hats and lonely gloves hanging around! 114

Light Once the closet interior was prettied up, I felt the outside could use some sprucing up too. We added greenery in an eyecatching planter, but something was still missing. Light. We needed more light. But between fixtures and electrical work, light can run up some big numbers, so we put up a trio of battery-operated sconces that act as beautiful and functional decor. Mission accomplished!
Devoiry: This series has been a powerful experience for me. And a humbling one, too! I hope you take the general information shared to heart and the particulars with a grain of sheetrock, because as unique as your family is, so is the design that works for you. Before I bid you adieu, I want to share one last tip. If redecorating in any shape or form doesn’t work for you right now, here’s one impactful and cost-free way to enhance your space: Mirrors and art on your walls should be hung at eye level. This may be a shocker to most because we usually tend to go high, but why should you crane your neck to enjoy your art? Keep in mind that whatever aesthetics you hang are there for you to see and enjoy comfortably. Rule of thumb? Measure about 60 inches from the floor until the middle of the art. That’s eye level. Obviously, adjust it if your family members are shorter or taller than the average, or if the art is placed over a very high-backed couch or headboard. Try it. Bring your wall hangings down to eye level, and see your space transformed from commercial-like to homey.
Welcome home!

You may be seriously entertaining the idea, or just swatting away the thought every night as you try to put the kids to sleep in a space that’s bursting at its seams. For many, however, it’s a prospect on the horizon: to move out to greener, and wider, pastures. What awaits you beyond city limits, in those developments, townhouses, side-by-sides and private properties in the communities popping up and expanding in the tristate area?
WEEK 1: FLATS
Week 2: Duplexes
Week 3: Private Homes
F E AT U R I NG : T H E PR I VAT E HOM E This week we explore the freestanding home on its own property, once the birthright of any suburban dweller and now a luxury that often has homeowners moving farther out to obtain it.
T H E DR AWS → First off is privacy. Sole ownership of a property translates to privacy in the home as well as in the yard, the ability to keep the sounds and the shades up without compromising privacy, and the ability to install pools, playgrounds or whatever one wishes on their property. → Independence: Decisions are not contingent upon property co-owners or a condominium association. → This type of construction offers the option of a car garage, which provides both wintertime comfort and storage solutions, with many private homes even including garages that can hold two to three cars. → With the basement usually three-quarters underground, the main entrance requires just a few stairs. → Most modern private homes allow for an extra dose of luxury: a two-story entrance, ten-foot ceilings on the main level and nine on the second level, and a lot of spaciousness. → Private homes are highly customizable and can be designed to suit any specific family’s needs. → The space allows for a variety of rooms, like a separate dining room and living room, a family room, playroom, den, sunroom, butler’s pantry, separate Pesach kitchen, indoor sukkah, mudroom with a separate entrance, as well as an indoor reading nook or sitting room on the upper level.

→ Providing that it’s allowed by local codes, the walk-in/basement level has the potential to be used as an accessory apartment. → Additionally, the basement can be finished to accommodate a spacious play area, a recreational area, suites for guests or maids, a home office, an event room, etc. → The multilevel layout allows for temperature control in the different home areas separately. Having the sleeping and living areas separate also optimizes home organization and allows for privacy when sleeping. → A typical private home will generally have significantly more square footage than a multifamily unit. → Between the basement, garage, closet space and attic, storage space is usually abundant. → Hosting in style is an option in a private construction, which often allows for private guest quarters.
T H E DR AW BACK S → Private homes are the most costly construction. Its maintenance and utilities also cost a great deal. → Maintaining and cleaning a luxury private home requires a lot of work, both from the part of the family/cleaning staff, as well as from professional maintenance services. → With no neighbors immediately nearby, children don’t have easy access to playmates as they do in shared living units. Adults, especially, will much sooner stop to chat with those living within feet from their own home than visit the neighbor’s private property. → There are generally a lot of stairs to walk in private homes, which many can find strenuous. In fact, today, some private homes include small 5x5’ elevators.

A LOOK AT THE PLANS These renderings are of a private home development we recently did on Viola Road. The plans are approximately 6,000 square feet. The main level includes a two-car garage. The foyer as well as the great room are two stories high. On the second level a bridge-style hallway overlooks the foyer and great room on either side and connects the master suite with the rest of the bedrooms. Notice the Jack and Jill bathroom upstairs.

SO YOU WA N T A N UPGRADE? Here are some ways any type of home can be upgraded at a reasonable cost. → Tray ceilings and cove lighting in the dining room, living room, or master bedroom. On the top floor, proper tray ceilings can be constructed, and on the lower levels, the look can be obtained by dropping the ceiling at the sides. → A fully-tiled bathroom, versus one that is only half-tiled. → A taller door (an 8-foot, or even 9-foot, door versus the typical 6.8-foot door), which gives the entrance a modern look. Similarly, taller doors inside the home also upgrade the decor by far. Decorative doors and handles is another upgrade you can do throughout the home or at the entrance. → High heads (spotlights). → In the kitchen, lighting above and below cabinets. You can also upgrade a kitchen with taller cabinets that reach the ceiling. → Nicer, bigger windows. The price difference is not so significant, but the look is so much more contemporary.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS While the ceiling’s the limit when it comes to upgrading a home, the happiest families are not necessarily those inhabiting luxurious homes. Home should be a place of warmth, love and simcha, and we often see those in small and simple spaces truly being the homemakers of the homiest dwellings. Gavriel Einhorn and his architectural company, AB Design, specialize in commercial and residential projects running the gamut from schools, yeshivos, camps, commercial buildings, health centers and private homes, to supermarkets and shopping malls. Some famous landmarks designed by AB Design include Rockland Kosher and the Shoppers Haven Mall, the Refuah Health Center buildings, as well as the new shul in New Square, the largest shul in the United States to date. Operating Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities in Accordance with Halachah
A PROJECT OF BAIS DIN MAYSHARIM
A Guide for Owners, Administrators and Employees
Reviewed by: Rav Yaakov E. Forcheimer and Rav Doniel Y. Neustadt
Operating a modern-day Healthcare Facility presents an unparalleled array of challenges, and entails clarifying a broad range of diverse halachos. Healthcare Facilities in Halachah is the first-ever compilation of halachos that apply exclusively to Healthcare Facilities.
This sefer presents these halachos in a clear manner, and includes discussions of real-life scenarios. It is comprehensive and authoritative, spanning all four sections of Shulchan Aruch, blending in-depth halachic analysis with practical guidance; enabling owners and administrators to operate their Facilities in full accordance with halachah.

This humble ball of soft fiber is used primarily for medical or cosmetic purposes. It originates from the cotton plant, a shrub found in subtropical and tropical regions. Cotton Commercialized Care and Crafts Light and little as they are, cotton balls rank high on the medical supplies list; they play center stage in ointment application, cleaning wounds, stopping blood after a shot is given, and soaking up blood during surgical procedures. In skin care, cotton balls come in handy for those who wish to protect their faces from the blemishes that can be caused by touching the skin with their fingers. And, of course, without the cotton ball, our preschool sheep would be missing their wool, the skies their clouds, and the zeidies their beards! Another art use the cotton ball has: Painting or ink stamping where one creates the appearance of texture in an art project.
Cotton wool has been used for sanitary and medical purposes since way back when, while cotton balls have been used as far back as 1801 to apply gold leaf, as evidenced by an artists’ manual for that year that recommends using a “squirrel’s tail or cotton ball” to press the gold leaf into place.
There is some evidence that the nifty things were being mass produced in 1816, as seen in a fabric company’s advertisement. But if there was a magic year for cotton balls, it would have to be 1937. That was the year Joseph A. Voss went ahead and invented a machine that unraveled rolls of cotton and cut them at fixed intervals, gifting the collective household with the cotton pad and cotton ball.

Did you know? Cotton balls aren’t friendly fluffs picked off an organically grown plant. The fibers are often processed with bleach and other chemicals, which can make them iffy for skin use. No worries, though; there are sterile cotton balls available. Cotton in medicine bottles were originally placed there to prevent the pills from jiggling around in the bottle and breaking, avoiding incorrect dosage if consumers were to pop broken pill fragments. Though they’re not necessary today as pills come coated, some companies have kept the cotton for the sake of same old, same old.
Cotton Balls or Cotton Pads? For general skincare routine, pads work best. They’re less absorbent so they’ll eat less of the product applied to them.
Cotton Ball Hacks Thought you’re through with cotton ball uses? The list doesn’t finish. No, really. When stubborn water spots show up on chrome, place cotton balls soaked in a vinegar-water solution on them for a few minutes to dissolve mineral deposits. Soothe a mild sunburn with a cotton ball dipped in vinegar, or a baking soda–water mixture. Remove permanent marker from skin with a cotton ball dipped in milk. Lift ink stains from clothes with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. Place the balls in the new shoes you’re breaking in to avoid or relieve painful skin friction. Soak them in bleach and place them in hard-to-clean corners to do the work for you. Let sit for an hour or two, then rinse the area with warm water. Dampen cotton balls with vanilla extract and place in the back of your fridge to keep it smelling fresh. To sprout seeds, place a bunch of cotton balls into a glass jar. Place the seeds on either side of the cotton and keep them damp. Watch magic happen in just a few days!
