the gift of convenience

Hi! My Neighbor just got engaged and my friends and I want to chip in for a gift. When we heard that you have a group chip-in option, we were thrilled! A great gift and so easy to organize!

The peppermill was so right! Setting up a group chip-in on their website is so easy. it takes just minutes to set up and my friends can chip in at their own convenience. We’ll never have to go through the hassle of laying out and collecting money, again!

You’ve come to the right place! We can either set up the group package with a link to pay on our website or on our pay-by-phone system. both are simple and convenient. The day of the simcha we’ll send a beautifully wrapped gift card for her to use when she stocks her kitchen.

I’m really excited Leah got engaged and I don’t even mind organizing her gift! Right! The Peppermills Simcha Chip-in system is easy! And the option to give her a beautifully wrapped gift card is my favorite part! Yes! She can choose just what she needs and still get her Kallah Discount!

From 20% off for kallahs to absolutely no exclusions on her gift card, this is the practical, most-appreciated gift for every kallah.

(Inbox, Issue 115) Dear Mrs. Brull, Your wonderful letter has actually led you to a promotion at work. You will, im yirtze Hashem, be playing an accordion in our upcoming Mitzvah Kinder book! Please make sure you’re well prepared for the job. Thank you to my friends and fans who spend hours playing with Mentchees and reading Mitzvah Kinder books to your kinderlach and grandchildren. You are my inspiration! Best regards, Toby — Mommy of the Mitzvah Kinder

A CRAFT OF LOVE

(Re: One Stitch at a Time, Issue 115) I would like to thank The Boro Park View staff for the wonderful article published this past week about my quilting. The layout, photos and content were superb. I would like to give a special thanks to Rachel Weinstein for the effort she put into this article. This is a craft of love and a tribute to my parents, z”l. Kind regards, Malka Serkin

A WELCOMING HOME, INDEED

(Re: Welcome to My Home) I had to take a moment to share my feedback on the column by Dee Interiors. It has totally enthralled me! Organizing and transforming a room from utter mess to complete perfection takes real talent, and the satisfaction of enhancing our homes in which we spend so much time is priceless.

Imagine... Home enhancements can be a family project that puts our creative juices to work, and now in the winter, I am looking forward to organizing and finally tackling those closets that are begging for my attention. An organized and beautiful space will be sure to infuse a sense of menuchas hanefesh into our home! Thank you so much for the column. I am definitely clipping it for reference! If your nights wouldn’t have to look this way... Sounds like a dream?

Let’s make it happen!

(Re: Diagram by Design) I really enjoy the practical, informative and interesting reading you provide. However, your past few issues have been a bit frustrating. I like seeing nice houses, but I can’t really afford my own, and I’m not seeing myself moving to Monsey or Lakewood within the near future. So why, when sitting down to a relaxing read, am I thrown into the lifestyle I do not have? Of choosing which four-bedroom layout works better, when I barely have two? Of seeing my dream laundry room and patio displayed in a real house? Maybe you should rather explore the benefits of condo apartments, of three-story houses, and yes — also of living within our beautiful, heimish, warm community! Thank you for allowing me to share my point of view. A (trying to be) Happy Camper in Our Cluttered Community

THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

(Welcome to My Home: Child Play, Issue 114) After seeing the super neat toy closet, I wonder what happens if Bubby gifts the kids with an extra-large truck that simply doesn’t fit in the closet? And why does color-coding, and keeping toys on specific shelves, matter? Let’s remember to keep our homes organized, but also to keep in mind

that if we attribute such a high level of importance to perfect closets, then this is what we teach our kids is our priority. I can’t imagine how good that can be for their upbringing. To keep bulky toys in that closet, I suggest getting rid of the lowest shelf. Then pile up the containers of Playmags and Clics one on top of the other, and get an extra-tall container for all cars, including what’s now outside the closet and three in a bin. That will leave room for one more tall container in which to hold musical, light-up and other muktzah toys. The results? There are no bulky toys out of the closet, and the muktzah container is actually teaching the kids something chinuch’dig. Not That Perfect

THE BEST GIFT

(Re: Bucketfuls of Play, Issue 114) I enjoyed reading about the Mitzvah Mentchees. It’s the very best toy, one with which my son loves to play. It’s always my bubby’s gift of choice, whether for a birthday, mishloach manos or another occasion. Whenever we visit my grandmother, my two-yearold already knows to ask for a Mitzvah Mentchee! C.H.

SWEET MEMORIES

(Re: Nostalgia Dressed in Doll Clothes, Issue 114) The nostalgic article about dolls brought back such sweet memories. I remember my aunt sewing the most adorable Cabbage Patch costumes for her kids. Your magazine is such a valuable addition to the community. Keep up your great work. A Local Mom

ASSESSING THE VALUE

(Re: A Peek at Porcelain, Issue 112) I read Chaya Blustein’s article about porcelain and china, and I was wondering if any of your readers or writers

Thank you so much for your fantastic publication! We enjoy it every week, and thus I felt it’s the right place to raise this issue. Dear Teacher, Thank you so much for the beautiful newsletter you handed out at PTA! It’s wonderful to see what each girl’s favorite subject is, what they enjoy most in the classroom, and their other comments. I appreciate your hard work and creative ideas in making the girls shine. However, I was very disappointed when I didn’t find my daughter’s name even once in the entire booklet. When I questioned her, she innocently explained that she had misplaced her paper, and then it was already too late to submit it. Principals, teachers and performance coordinators, please note: While all of my kids’ classmates are lovely and adorable, each mother is looking out for her own child! It does not feel good for a mother to see her daughter not mentioned at all. The same goes when I watch an adorable school performance where each girl is glowingly performing. I’m disappointed when my daughter is placed in a spot where I, her mother, am unable to see her. While the entire play is stunning, what purpose does my attendance have if I can’t see my own daughter? Dear hardworking school staff: Before you send a newsletter to print, please double check to see that every child is included. I thank you all for everything you are doing for my daughter, and may every mother be zoche to see much Yiddish nachas from each and every child! Your Student’s Mother

EDITOR’S BULLETIN COOKING CORRECTION

should go to cover my friend’s wedding expenses.” The letter tugged at Reb Yechiel Mordechai’s heart. He told Rav Yechezkel Abramsky, who was then the Rav of London, about it. The Rav said he would see what he could do to raise the funds so that the poor kallah could go to her chuppah. A few days later, Rav Abramsky told Reb Yechiel Mordechai that he already had the entire sum. “I want to go to the local post office and mail the letter myself,” he said. “I want to do

The Midrash says that one reason the Yidden were told to take a sheep for the korban Pesach was a middah k’neged middah retribution to the Mitzriyim. The Mitzriyim used to cook meat and eat it in the presence of the Yidden without sharing it, and now the Yidden roasted and partook in the sheep that they held holy. The Mitzriyim were harshly punished for all they did to Klal Yisroel. Why did they need to be punished for this tiny detail that nearly gets lost in the large scheme of the troubles they inflicted? DURING HIS DAUGHTER’S engagement, Reb Yechiel Mordechai Gordon was in London. As part of the shidduch, the Gordons had promised a significant sum as dowry. One day, Reb Yechiel Mordechai received a letter from his daughter. She wrote that her friend, who was also engaged, was in a difficult predicament. Her parents, too, had pledged the same amount, which they intended to pay with money they had loaned to a yeshivah. But the yeshivah was in difficult financial straits and had no way of repaying the money. Thus, the wedding date of this poor kallah was in danger of being postponed. “Both my chasan and I agree,” Reb Yechiel Mordechai’s daughter wrote, “that the money pledged for our wedding

The two decided that the friend who would pass away first

“Since we shook hands on this, I was given permission to reveal just one thing.” would come to the other in a dream to describe what takes place in the Olam Ha’emes. They sealed their deal with a solid handshake. The friend of the rebbetzin passed away first, several years after their conversation. Indeed, she fulfilled her promise, and three days after her passing, she appeared to the rebbetzin in a dream. “My friend,” she said, “in Shamayim, there is a gezeirah that one may not repeat to those alive in the world below what happens here. But since we shook hands on this, I was given permission to reveal just one thing. “You should know that in Shamayim, every single tiny action is taken into account. Even the smallest things are not overlooked. “You might remember that day when we went to collect some coins for hachnasas kallah for an orphan. When one of the wealthy women in town passed us, I waved to motion to her to wait. She stopped walking and waited for us to approach, and after we told her about the cause, she gave us a nice donation. “You can imagine that there was schar awaiting me for all the tzedakah collecting I did in my life. But you should know that even for that little wave, I received a huge reward!”

Indeed, when Hakadosh Baruch Hu wishes to repay a reward or punishment, not even the minutest detail of a person’s actions are forgotten. We learn this from the punishment the Mitzriyim received. They paid a large-scale price for their large-scale exploitation of Klal Yisroel. But at the same time, they were punished for every little detail separately, middah k’neged middah, with precision. Tormenting the Yidden by eating in front of them may have been insignificant in the larger scheme of their misdeeds, but it was not too small an infraction to warrant additional punishment.

Did You Know? Before bringing the Korban Pesach, every Yid needed to undergo a bris milah. Some hesitated, and so Hakadosh Baruch Hu instructed Moshe Rabbeinu to begin roasting his own lamb. The winds of Gan Eden immediately clung to that korban, sweeping a tantalizing aroma throughout Mitzrayim. The Yidden all wanted a part of this sweetness and agreed to have their brissim. A number of Mitzriyim were tempted by the aroma and begged for a chance to have a bris as well. They became geirim — the Erev Rav. Both the blood of milah and of the Korban Pesach affirmed Klal Yisroel’s commitment to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, making them doubly worthy of geulah.

Adams Hits the Ground Running After Taking Oath of Office

Bronx, Broadway Junction in Brooklyn and Jamaica-179th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, as of last weekend. Pop-up vaccination sites were also being held at the Times Square and Grand Central stations.

Eric Adams wasted no time after taking the oath of office in Times Square on Friday night as New York City’s 110th mayor — taking the subway to City Hall for his first day of work, calling 911 to report a fight, and holding a cabinet meeting with his new team. “A better city is not just about doing something new,” announced Mayor Adams. “It’s about doing something right. It’s not about showmanship. It’s about showing up. The theme of my first 100 days is GSD: Get Stuff Done. Let’s go!” In his inaugural address, Adams vowed to eliminate waste and inefficiencies in New York City and to restore a sense of normalcy, reported Hamodia. “Getting vaccinated is not letting the crisis control you,” said Adams. “Sending your kids to school. Going back to the office. These are declarations of confidence that our city is our own.” In the days before taking office, Adams had already announced that former mayor Bill de Blasio’s mandates that required all private sector employees to be vaccinated would remain in effect. Also carrying over to the new administration are previous mask and vaccine mandates, part of the continued effort to live with the virus. “We’re at the point where we must learn to live safely with COVID,” said Adams. “Keep our city open,” added Adams. “That’s the goal. We can’t shut our city down again.” Adams’ words came just days after the MTA suspended three subway lines temporarily because of COVID-19 staffing shortages, reported ABC 7. The W train service was suspended on Wednesday last week, with the B and Z lines taken out one day later. The MTA scrambled to cover the outages, advising B train riders to use the Q line in Brooklyn and D trains in Manhattan and the Bronx. Z train riders were told to use the J, which added local stops to its route, and those who normally take the W line were sent to the N in Queens or the R in Manhattan. A post by the MTA last week read, “Like everyone in New York, we’ve been affected by the COVID surge. We’re running as much train service as we can with the operators we have available.” City train stations have been pressed into service as COVID-19 testing sites, with PCR tests available at Times Square, Grand Central and Penn Station in Manhattan, E. 180th Street in the

CDC Halves Required COVID-19 Quarantines Citing scientific data demonstrating that most COVID-19 infections are spread during the early course of the illness, the Centers for Disease Control shortened its required quarantine period from ten to five days. A CDC statement released last week said that those who have COVID-19 should isolate for five days, and if they no longer have symptoms at that time and have been without fever for 24 hours, can leave quarantine. Those individuals are advised to continue wearing masks while around others for an additional five days to minimize the risk of any potential infections. According to the CDC, most infections are spread one to two days before COVID-19 symptoms emerge and for another 48 to 72 hours afterward. New guidance was also given for those who were exposed to coronavirus. Unvaccinated individuals and those who received their second dose of the vaccine more than six months ago (or two months after the Johnson & Johnson shot) and have not yet had a booster should quarantine for five days and mask up for five more days. In cases where quarantine isn’t feasible, the CDC strongly recommends wearing a well-fitting mask for ten days. Those who were exposed to COVID-19 after receiving a booster should wear a mask for ten days but do not need to quarantine. In all cases, those exposed to the virus should test for COVID-19 five days after the initial exposure, and anyone experiencing symptoms should quarantine immediately until they receive a negative COVID-19 test. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky explained that the latest guidance is being issued to help people continue with their daily lives and is based on the latest data about vaccinations, booster shots, and how COVID-19 spreads. “Prevention is our best option,” said Dr. Walensky. “Get vaccinated, get boosted, wear a mask in public indoor settings and areas of substantial and high-community transmission, and take a test before you gather.”

Hochul Continues COVID-19 Battle With Winter Surge Plan 2.0 With record-breaking COVID-19 surges continuing daily, Governor Kathy Hochul outlined her latest salvo in the battle against the virus last week, titling her initiative Winter Surge Plan 2.0. Hochul’s five-point plan focuses on five distinct areas — keeping schools open, increasing masking and testing, preventing serious illness and death, providing greater access to vaccinations, and working closely with local leaders. “We have every tool to keep our families and communities safe,” said acting state health commission Dr. Mary Bassett, adding, “Leveraging these multilayered mitigation tactics is how we will protect the health of New Yorkers and effectively manage the winter surge.” Hochul has made keeping schools open a priority, sending millions of tests directly to schools and implementing “Test to Stay” protocols, which would have students allowed back into class after a classmate tests positive if they take a COVID-19 test and receive a negative result. The governor also extended the statewide mandate requiring businesses to have patrons either mask up or produce a vaccination card. Other initiatives involve upping hospital capacities, distributing antiviral treatments, and boosting vaccination rates among children, teens and nursing home residents. “We can get through this surge through targeted actions, partnerships with local leaders, and by taking common sense steps to keep us all safe: get vaccinated, get boosted, and wear a mask indoors,” said Hochul.

As Cuomo Investigations Continue, No Criminal Charges Forthcoming in Three of Eleven Harassment Allegations Despite finding that witnesses had provided credible accusations against former governor Andrew Cuomo, two district attorneys have said that they would not be filing criminal charges for three separate incidents of harassment. NBC News reported that Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah had been investigating two of eleven incidents that had been filed against Cuomo. A statement released by Rocah last week said that her office had looked into the incidents, both of which had taken place in Westchester, and that neither met the state’s statutory requirements for criminal law. Rocah did note that her findings did not preclude the possibility that Cuomo could be found civilly liable in those same incidents. Rocah’s announcement came one week after Nassau County

District Attorney Joyce Smith released a similar report, saying that she found Cuomo’s actions troubling but that they did not meet the state’s standards for criminality. Cuomo remains under investigation for other allegations of misconduct both at the local and the federal levels. Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for the former governor, seized the opportunity to proclaim his innocence while taking a shot at Attorney General Letitia James, whose report toppled Cuomo and ultimately led to his resignation. “With each passing day, it becomes more and more clear that the attorney general’s report was the intersection of gross prosecutorial misconduct and an abuse of government power for political purposes,” said Azzopardi, adding that James “ignited the cancel culture mentality and started a media and political stampede against Governor Cuomo.”

Styrofoam Ban Goes Into Effect Statewide Like the year 2021, Styrofoam peanuts and takeout containers are now taking their place in New York’s history books, now that they have been banned all across the Empire State. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s ban on polystyrene foam container and loose fill packaging went into effect on January 1, and affects all food service establishments, retail food stores, delis, groceries, restaurants, coffee shops, health care facilities and schools. Foam containers and packing peanuts will no longer be available for sale, in an effort to prevent environmental litter and promote the use of recyclable materials. While the statewide ban is the first in the nation, ABC 7 reported that more than half of New Yorkers live in communities where similar bans are already in existence, among them New York City residents, whose styrofoam ban was enacted in January 2019. “New York City and Long Island are seeing the benefits of their foam bans with reduced litter on their landscapes and waterways,” said DEC commissioner Basil Seggos. “Now the rest of the state is poised to reap the benefits of a cleaner environment. DEC continues to focus on outreach to educate affected entities, but we know the foam ban will work and we look forward to less waste in our landfills in 2022.” Violators could be faced with fines of $250 for a first offense and up to $1,000 for a third violation in a calendar year, reported NPR. Seggos said that the state would be phasing in enforcement. “Anytime we pass a new law and it goes into effect, there’s always a period of education and outreach upfront,” said Seggos. Over the past year, the DEC has been letting tens of thousands of businesses know about the upcoming ban, giving them an opportunity to prepare for the new reality.

“Most understand that it’s coming,” said Seggos. “But some will be laggards.” Waivers will be available for small and nonprofit entities that might have trouble complying with the ban, which could include community meal programs, food pantries and religious organizations. Food service providers with an annual gross income of less than $500,000 per location, that operate fewer than ten locations statewide and are not part of a franchise can also request hardship waivers, which are available from the DEC in English as well as Yiddish, Russian and several other languages.

A federal judge ruled that, over the next fifteen years, New York City will be required to equip 13,200 intersections with new signal devices that will help blind pedestrians cross safely. Courthouse News Service reported that Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York faulted the city for not doing its part to keep the blind and visually impaired safe. Engelmayer found that the city had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act by equipping fewer than 5% of its intersections with devices whose audible or tactile capabilities could assist those with visual limitations. Engelmayer ordered the city to install Accessible Pedestrian Signal devices on 10,000 intersections over the next ten years, with 500 installed in the first two years of the plan, 700 in the third and 800 in both the fourth and fifth years. Engelmayer noted that the city had been slow to install the devices because of technology issues, which were no longer relevant. “This outcome is tailored to curing the violations of the federal and local law the court has found,” wrote Engelmayer, in his 90-page decision. “It achieves this goal on a timetable that is prompt, attainable and respectful of the city’s realistic capacity and competing demands on its resources and budget.” There are clusters of accessible crosswalks in certain parts of the city, but others have gaps of ten blocks between the nearest nonvisual crossing signs, noted Lori Scharff, one of two plaintiffs who sued the city in 2018. Scharff, who is blind and makes her way around the city along with the aid of a guide dog, hailed Engelmayer’s decision. “Having to solely rely on what you’re listening to with cars is not giving us access to the same information a sighted pedestrian gets when looking at the walk/don’t walk sign,” explained Scharff. “So really at any intersection, we’re at a disadvantage.” Approximately 2.4% of city residents are visually disabled at some level, reported Hamodia. “We can finally look forward to a day, not long from now, when all pedestrians will have safe access to city streets,” said American Council of the Blind lawyer Torie Atkinson. “We hope this decision is a wake-up call, not just to New York City, but for every other transit agency in the country that’s been ignoring the need of people with vision disabilities.” Nicholas Paolucci, a spokesperson for the New York City’s law department, said that the city had been facing operational challenges in installed APS devices. “We are carefully evaluating the court’s plan to further the city’s progress in increasing accessibility to people who are blind and visually impaired.”

RECAP: Ariella

seriously considers leaving Aliza’s home and finding herself a place to rent, though she’d need some source of income to cover her stay. Bassi’s son Yisroel Meir falls and is rushed to the hospital. While watching Osher at the window one night, Ariella notices him staring at her, and she flees, not wanting him to recognize her.

riella broke into a jog to get away from Osher, who she was almost certain had noticed someone looking at him. A loud guffaw from one of the nearby houses — which was adorned with colorful, blinking lights — galvanized her to move even faster. She reached the corner of the street, turned left, and glanced quickly behind her. Aside from two Arab girls chatting with each other, the narrow street was empty. At the next corner, Ariella turned again, but a wide metal gate suddenly opened right in front of her, almost slamming her in the forehead! She recoiled in shock and gasped when she saw a number of people dressed from head to toe in black emerging from the courtyard behind the gate, speaking in hushed tones. It was a guttural Arabic that they spoke, and she recognized it, despite the low tones. And then she noticed someone else, even though it was only her profile. Aliza. She was the only one not completely dressed in black, and she was also the only one holding a glowing candle in her hands. An orange candle. She stood with the other women around her, murmuring something in Arabic. Her friends answered in a singsong voice, and then fell silent. Again she said something, and again they answered her. Sweat poured down Ariella’s face despite the evening chill. She began to retreat, carefully, and then, after two steps, she turned on her heel and fled. I don’t care if I meet up with you, Osher. I don’t care if you know that I’ve been in Acco for a while already. I don’t care about any of it! Right now I

She would not make a mistake; she wouldn’t. She had a good sense of direction, and she would find the correct way. She would get to the house even before that creature would get there. And she’d take her things and disappear. Ariella didn’t know how it happened so fast, but she suddenly found herself in front of the house. She took another deep breath and climbed the stairs, suspiciously glancing at the mezuzah on the doorpost. Where are you, key? Her fingers trembled as she rummaged in her bag, and it took her a long moment until they closed around the key. She stuck it into the keyhole, opened the door, and hurried into her room. First she slammed the door and locked it, and then she quickly began tossing all of her possessions onto the bed. She stuffed them haphazardly into her suitcase in no particular order, while constantly looking around the room to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything. At the last minute, she pulled the green necklace out of her pocketbook, holding it with her fingertips, as if it was bewitched. She placed it into the drawer of the night table. Maybe it was bewitched. Perhaps Aliza belonged to some type of Arab cult. Or maybe she was just a member of a group of eccentric people. But how was it possible? Aliza, who spoke a perfect Hebrew… the mezuzos… her overall views on things… But the truth was, Aliza didn’t really have so many views on

things. And when Ariella thought about it, Aliza’s speech also had a foreign ring to it… And her clothes? There wasn’t anything necessarily Jewish or Arabic about them. She didn’t wear a hijab, but rather a strange kerchief that enveloped her completely, and a dress that reached the floor. And the fact that she spoke Hebrew? Well, if she’d grown up here in Acco, there was no reason she shouldn’t know Hebrew. Ariella closed the zipper of her suitcase and looked around one more time. There, it was all done. She would depart quietly and leave payment on the table near the entrance and the keys under the mat. Hopefully Aliza, or whatever her real name was, was still out on the street, chanting in Arabic, waving her orange candle from side to side as she cast light into the darkness of the night. Ariella smiled to herself as she opened the door of her room and stepped into the dark, silent house. Suddenly the old phone on the table near the door rang, its sharp peals shattering the quiet. It continued to ring and ring, while Ariella quickly counted out the bills and placed them on the table. Finally the ringing stopped, and she heard a long beep. Then came a voice message: “Aziza, Aziza, it’s a shame you are not picking up the phone and that you’re not paying attention to the messages I’m leaving you.” A moment of silence, and then, “It’s Ya’ela Brinkler again, and I wanted to remind you that you haven’t paid your rent for three months already. I’m sorry I need to speak this way, but my husband says that if the payment is not made, we’ll have to involve the police. Do you remember that our

contract expires in a month and a half, and that we’re coming back? So let’s finish this well.” Ariella grabbed the phone. “Hello?” she gasped into the receiver. “Aziza?” The voice sounded very taken aback. “Azi—? No, this is her tenant.” “Her tenant? But she’s our tenant.” “Yes, I heard your message, but she’s not here now — only I am. Is this your house?” “Yes. We rented it to her for a year.” “Are you Jewish? I mean, you must be, because of the mezuzos.” “That’s right,” Ya’ela replied, still sounding very puzzled. “But I don’t understand what —” “Is Aliza also Jewish? Uh… I mean, Aziza?” “Definitely not,” the voice said with a chuckle. “And who are you, please?” “I’m a chareidi woman from Bnei Brak, and I live in her house… I mean, I was living there until now. For some reason, I was sure she’s also Jewish…” Ariella stared at the old lace tablecloth. “It’s a good thing I don’t trust everyone who promises me that they only cook kosher.” “What?” Ya’ela Brinkler’s voice rose. “Do you mean to say that she cooked in my kitchen?” “Uh…yes.” “But the kitchen was explicitly exempt from the contract! She told me that she’s an older woman who doesn’t need much, and that she doesn’t cook anyway, and that she’d manage without the kitchen. And I left it locked! That’s… wow, I’m in shock.” She paused, and Ariella could almost see her shaking her head. “Look,” she went on, “I wouldn’t call my husband and myself ‘chareidim from Bnei Brak’; we’re far from that. But we are very careful about kashrus. And this woman seemed so reliable to me…” “I know,” Ariella said. “To me, too.” She closed her fingers around the handle of her suitcase. She really had to get out of here before the woman would return. “I’ll speak to my husband, but I think we’re going to have to involve the police… although I really didn’t want to get into a confrontation. It’s not good in Acco, because —” Ariella turned her head in alarm toward the door. Without another word or even an apology, she put the receiver back in the cradle. She hadn’t been

wrong; just then, the key turned in the lock, and Aliza walked in, her regular smile on her face. There was no sign of the orange candles. “Hello, there!” she said. “How are you?” Ariella forced all of her creative juices into action. “Baruch Hashem, great! And you?” “Good, good. What’s with the suitcase?” “Something came up, and I have to leave.” Ariella flashed one of her most brilliant — and calm — smiles. “I was just leaving you the money here, under the phone.” If she stated clearly that she wanted to leave, could the Arab woman do something to her? She’d have no reason to, but still… “Wait, so, you’re leaving for good?” “I don’t know myself. I might be back… it depends on a few different things.” For example, if you get away from here, or if I wake up from a deep sleep and discover that this whole evening — from the minute I spotted you in the street until the phone call from Ya’ela — was nothing more than a vivid dream. “When will you know?” The woman sat down on the rattan chair in the entry hall. “Later.” “What do you mean by ‘later’? When will that be?” Ariella was already near the door. “That’s what I’m going to find out,” she said, and she placed the two keys — one to the front door and one to the door of her room — on the small shelf near the front door. “In any case, thank you for everything. And I really don’t like orange candles.” Oh, come on, why didn’t her adventurous soul just let her be quiet now?! Why did she have to blurt that out? It was possible, of course, that Aliza/Aziza would think she was talking about the incident on Friday morning, but it was also possible that she’d realize that Ariella had seen her in the street. But now Ariella did not wait to observe her landlady’s reaction. It was more important to just leave right away — and the sooner the better. She hurried into the street and began walking. Now, where to? The train station. This was it; her ceremonial visit in Acco was now over, and with it, the little bit of breathing space it had given her. She had to get back to routine. But her heart rebelled.

No, the routine that awaited her did not attract her at all. Why return to it? To teach girls math and to play the accordion until the end of days? There was a certain fulfillment in it, yes, but it was not enough for her. Of course, everyone would say, “You’re looking for real fulfillment? Be in touch with the shadchanim — that should be your first step!” Ariella stopped walking and put her suitcase down for a moment. She turned around — no Aziza behind her. After a few more minutes of walking, she’d be at the train station. She’d already accumulated enough hours in Acco to know this route by heart. So she’d board the train and get back to Bnei Brak, and her parents and sisters would be happy to see her. And she’d be happy to see them, and they’d have a pleasant, festive evening to mark her homecoming. And then what? Shidduchim again? Comparing suggestions all the time, going back to the past, knowing that nothing would ever be as it was in her first marriage? Almost angrily, Ariella grabbed her suitcase again and briskly continued onward, almost in a run. No, she would not get stuck like that again. No! She and Nosson hadn’t lived together long enough to discover their conflict points. But she had lived with herself for long enough to collide head-on with her weak points, over and over again. And this effort to relax was crumbling like a toasted herb dried in the sun. All of her senses were rebelling, shouting that even if the first time around she’d somehow merited a husband who kept quiet, who was able to overlook so much, and didn’t see the flaws in others, there was no chance that such a miracle would occur again. The train station came into view. Good. She’d walk into the tumult, the line for a ticket, the noisy bustle of people, and then she’d stop thinking so much. Her thoughts were not doing her any good, and besides, whatever she had been explaining to herself about this for the past few years wasn’t getting her very far. And she was afraid that if something drastic didn’t change, she wouldn’t get very far for the next one hundred years either.

Ariella stopped walking and put her suitcase down for a moment. She turned around — no Aziza behind her.

G O O D O L’ GREEN BEANS BY: MIRIA M PE S SY WE RCB E R G E R

Green beans are a staple on many side dish rotations, and with good reason. They are healthy, crunchy and delicious. Here are some fresh ways to switch ‘em up!

SOUR GREEN BEANS 78

The Boro Park View

SOUR GREEN BEANS My beloved grandmother, Babby Stekel, a”h, was an amazing cook (among many other things) and quite health-minded. She was way ahead of her time in terms of creating dishes that now, years later, are considered trendy, gourmet and artisanal. I have great memories of devouring these sour green beans faster than she could make them.

ACRYLICS. CANVAS. ALUMINUM. We've got them all!

Note: If using table salt, use half the amount to replace the kosher salt called for in this recipe, then adjust to taste.

INGREDIENTS 1½ lb. green beans 4 tsp. kosher salt 1½ tsp. pickling spices 2 handfuls fresh dill (checked) 1 head garlic Water

DIRECTIONS 1. Trim and rinse green beans. 2. Place green beans in a 64-ounce ball jar or two 32-ounce jars by arranging them snugly upright. 3. Add salt, spices, dill, garlic and water to cover. 4. Cover jar with the lid, and place in a relatively warm spot on the counter. Allow to ferment for 3 to 4 days. Once a day, give the jar a quick shake, and then open it for a few seconds. 5. After the beans are fermented, store them in the refrigerator.

My grandmother used to clean and check her dill by rinsing and drying it, and then running it briefly through the stovetop gas flame and rinsing once more. Consult with your dayan about using fresh herbs.

Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

“Before we married off our first child, my husband went to our Rebbe and asked him what he should know about the inyan of mitzvah tantz. The Rebbe only told him that he should have in mind that he wants to have in mind what those who established the mitzvah tantz originally had in mind… More than that, he didn’t tell him anything.” The words of the wise woman I’d been suggested to call echoed the words I’d heard only a few minutes previously from a kallah teacher:

“The mitzvah tantz is very esoteric; it is not something I understand, and I tell all my kallahs that.” It was around this point that I realized that perhaps it’d be too difficult to delve into this little-understood community minhag. But forge ahead I did, and though there are many things that lie far beyond our understanding, perhaps these nuggets of gathered gold will enrich us all.

The Mitzvah of the Tantz At a very basic level, the mitzvah tanz has its roots in an ancient practice, which the Gemara speaks of in Maseches Kesubos with the question: Keitzad merakdin lifnei hakallah — how does one dance before the bride? In the days of old, dancing in front of the kallah was clearly a given, with some of the greatest talmidei chachamim even performing juggling shows before the bride. This is a tradition that has been carried into the present and is performed by every Jewish community, though the specifics of dancing before the kallah vary by kehillah. The chassidish community, by and large, fulfills this injunction at the end of the wedding, after the guests with the exception of close family have gone home. In small groups and individually, the male members of the chasan’s and kallah’s families are called upon to dance before the kallah and then with the chasan. The extended family dances first, while those closest to the bride and groom dance just prior to the ultimate moment: the dance of Aishes Chayil, where the chasan and kallah share an emotional-laden moment of tefillah. On a practical level, the mitzvah tantz is a beautiful way to be mechazek the chasan by swooping him into the circles of uncles, in-laws and grandparents in a warm welcome to the kallah’s family. The chasan also knows that the reason for the mitzvah tantz is solely because of his kallah, and it is in her merit that the entire family is dancing before her. This raises her esteem in his eyes, and likewise shows the kallah that she is worthy of the attention she is receiving from her chasan and family, helping her to be enthusiastic about entering a new stage in life with both its blessings and hardships. The positive feelings that are engendered through the mitzvah tantz help to create endearment between the new couple, setting the right tone for the beginning of their life together. It is in the realm of sod, however, that the true depth of the mitzvah tantz lies, and though these secrets are not readily available to or easily understood by the average person, we can

meated with awareness of Hashem. That, of course, is the era of Moshiach, when our reduced ability to perceive emes will be lifted. In galus we are as dreamers — “hayinu k’cholmim” — but in that era we will attain a new level of consciousness, allowing us to perceive Hashem’s greatness to the fullest extent a created being is able to. According to Harav Menachem Mendel of Riminov, the marriage of every zivug brings the Shechinah closer to Kudsha Brich Hu, moving us steadily toward that time of blessed clarity.

The Badchan One of the most notable figures of the mitzvah tantz is the badchan, who tells jokes to bring joy to the chasan and kallah and inspires them with words of mussar, enabling them to obtain the right mindset as they embark on the journey of life together. The badchan acts as a shaliach on behalf of all the people in attendance, fulfilling for them the injunction of bringing joy to the chasan and kallah through the use of words (mesamcho b’devarim).

Variations Aishes Chayil The intrinsic connection between Shabbos and chasunos can also be seen in the singing of Aishes Chayil, which is traditionally sung both on Shabbos nights and at the final mitzvah tantz. On the level of sod, Aishes Chayil is sung in honor of the Shechinah, which will no longer be in exile once the Yidden reach the era of Moshiach. The dance of Aishes Chayil is about reunification of the “Shechinah” with “Kudsha Brich Hu” — a Kabbalistic concept that few can understand, though a teaching of Rav Tzadok Hakohen, zt”l, may shed a bit of light for us laymen… In Dovar Tzedek, Rav Tzadok Hakohen writes that the Leshem Yichud we say before the performance of many mitzvos speak of this reunification, and that the various Sheimos of Hashem represent different aspects of the Ribbono Shel Olam. While “Kadosh” (or “Kudsha,” in Aramaic) refers to His ultimate unknowability due to His existing beyond the realm of Creation, and His being far beyond what the human 96

intellect can grasp, “Shechinah” refers to our ability to perceive Him in this world, as the pasuk says, “...v’shachanti b’socham — and I will dwell among them” (Shemos 25:8). Aishes Chayil is, on one level, about the days in which the world will be per-

Though mitzvah tantz is common in the chassidish world, there are variations on the general concept. While the oldest known mention (that I’m aware of) of what appears to be a mitzvah tantz occurs in the Machzor Vitry, a sefer written by a talmid of Rashi Hakodesh in the 12th century, both the chasan and kallah were

A minhag with a mesorah ...

THE NUMBER ONE STEP FOR A STRESS -FREE SIMCHAH Making a wedding is always an exciting and emotional time. The whole family, mechutanim, grandparents, children and not to mention the chassan and kallah, get pulled into the excitement as they count down to that special day, when they’ll finally be led under the chuppah. The to-do list is long and detailed. You need to clothe the entire family. Furnish the apartment. Buy the shtafir, plan the logistics of the chasunah, organize the sheva berachas and... the list never really finishes. You try to think of every detail. You take note of every advice shared by your family and friends. You daven and hope that everything goes well and your simchah will be a ‘simchah with simchah’. You flip through every sefer for segulos that ‘guarantee’ you more Siyata dishmaya. Is there something more you can do, you wonder?

The answer is yes. And fortunately, it takes only one phone call!

‫שבת‬ ‫באווארפן‬ ,‫ צופרידן‬,‫רואיג‬ ‫מיט א שמייכל‬

to do to make sure you can celebrate your simchah with peace of mind. So yes, just one phone call to Einey Yeshuah and, like the hundreds of mechutanim before you, the real stress and worry is over. One short phone call and you’re registered in the ‘’Sefer Hasimchah’’. That’s all it takes to ensure that Einey Yeshuos has you and your family in mind with the special segulos and practices, all based on solid tradition.

And, as you move forward, from the first exhilarating moments of anticipation as you bring in Shabbos Aufruf, until that satisfied sigh of nachas and sheer gratitude at the last sheva berachos, you’ll have the calmness and serenity of knowing that you’ve done your part in bringing this extra protection and siyata dishmaya to your special occasion

Already as far back as in the times of the Tashba’’tz (around 600 years ago) we find a minhag for mechutanim to practice certain segulos to ward off the Eyin Harah (Tashbatz, Katan, Ch 464). Still later, the Shevet Mussar cautions about protecting against Eyin Harah especially families of Chasan and Kallah! In fact, that’s one of the reasons why we break a glass under the chuppah - to protect against any Eyin Harah that may be present (Ohr Hachamah). We see that based on our mesorah, protecting against Eyin Harah is the correct and necessary hishtadlus for you

mentioned as being seated facing one another with others dancing around the two of them — not just the kallah having others dance in front of her. When it comes to the actual dancing, there are differing opinions in regard to use of a gartel when dancing in front of a kallah who is not an immediate relative. While some poskim permit it, others do not permit the use of a gartel at all, saying that the mitzvah is to dance in front of the kallah, not with the kallah — and therefore, those who follow this psak dance without a gartel between them and the bride, often tucking their hands into their own gartel or pumping their fists to the music. When it comes to the father (and often the grandfathers) of the bride, some use a gartel and some hold their daughter’s hands. Even the manner of dancing can vary from one dancer to the next, and these variations are often based upon secrets related to the Sheimos of Hashem. If one looks carefully during a mitzvah tantz, they may notice that some rebbes dance in calculated patterns, using their footsteps to form certain letters of the aleph-beis. Certain rebbes have been noted to dance in the pattern of Yud-Kay-Vav-Kay, while

other rebbes seem to dance in the pattern of a shin. There are so many minhagim within the minhag of mitzvah tantz that one can learn something new nearly every time they attend one. For instance, though most chassiduses have the chasan sit next to the kallah during the mitzvah tantz, others do not. Likewise, mitzvah tantz in Sanz takes place not only on the wedding night, but every night of sheva brachos! Perhaps the most interesting — or least commonly known — variation on the mitzvah tantz is that which is practiced by some families of the Skver, Viznitz, Rachmistrikve and Chernobly chasiduses:

the chasan mahl. The chasan mahl takes place the night before the chasunah, and begins with the chasan circling the kallah’s home seven times in an act that proclaims he’s come to greet the kallah. After that, the celebrating families gather together for a seudah that’s on a similar scale of a tena’im. The highlight of the night is when the chasan dances in a circle around the kallah while she holds a gartel. When the chasan finishes his dance, the other men join him in dance. The chuppah is held before shkiah the next day in order for the chasan mahl and the chasunah to be “bo b’yom” — on the same halachic day.

Opposition Despite being held in high regard by most chassidim, significant portions of the Jewish community view the mitzvah tantz as foreign, at best, and inappropriate, at worst. The mitzvah tantz is, in fact, sometimes a source of contention when marriages occur between families who observe the custom and those who don’t. Individuals who are staunchly antimitzvah tantz claim that removing the mechitzah between men and women during this final stage of the celebration is a breach of tznius, as is the “dance” of Aishes Chayil. And while they certainly have broad shoulders to lean upon, so do those who support the minhag. Most importantly, however, there is a middle ground which must be acknowledged. According to the Yismach Moshe, who allegedly wrote a letter against the previously mentioned chasan mahl over fear of it leading to pritzus, there is fear, too, that even the mitzvah tantz could lead to spiritual danger should attendees behave inappropriately. Should that occur, the Yismach Moshe is said to have written, the minhag of mitzvah tantz

would have to be suspended. This, in fact, is what the Lubavitcher Rebbe was said to have held. Though he, himself, had a mitzvah tantz of sorts, he was said to have declared that though the minhag was beloved in days of old, it should not be observed by his chassidim due to yeridos hadoros and the lowered standards of tznius. The very real pitfalls that could occur on one of the holiest days in a person’s life lead some rebbishe families to take the added precaution of having the kallah wearing a cape or even a veil during the mitzvah tantz. Select groups also erect a mechitzah of sorts, and bachurim are generally not permitted to attend the mitzvah tantz. According to the Kehal Yitzchok Spinka Rebbe, one reason the badchan calls out, “Gut Shabbos, gut Shabbos,” during the mitzvah tantz is to combat an atmosphere of pritzus, for saying “Shabbos” is a segulah against the yetzer hara in these matters.

The Holiness of the Mitzvah Tantz The mitzvah tantz is considered a very

holy event and a tremendous eis ratzon by those who follow this tradition. The time should not be used for frivolous chatter or levity, but for heartfelt tefillah. This is a time in which previous generations, whose neshamos come to the chasunah (according to the Zohar), are witnessing the continuation of their doros. The previous Skulener Rebbe, zt”l, was wont to say that the neshamos come not only in spiritual form but also appear in the guf, and those who are zoche to see them, do. However, he cautioned, the neshamos that come down depart from the chasunah if they fail to recognize their progeny, who are the embodiment of the fruit of their toils in Yiddishkeit. Moshe Aryeh Fruend, zt”l, the Rav of Yerushalayim, once said that the mitzvah tantz is compared to the holy day of Hoshana Rabbah, an especially auspicious time to daven for closeness to Hashem, success in the next stage of life, and the coming of Moshiach. Ultimately, whether or not one observes the minhag of mitzvah tantz, they must acknowledge that it’s a very deep tradition that has far more to it than meets the eye.

THE BIG BOX IS HERE!

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT

Two sets of silverware? Check. Food processor and iron? Check. Measuring cups, cookie sheets, blankets, linen and towels? Check, check, check, check and check. I have always found that the easiest way to tackle the somewhat daunting task of setting up a household for a new kallah is to stand in any room in my house, turn around slowly in a complete circle, and then make a list of all the essential items that appeared in my field of vision. But when it came to marrying off daughter number four not that long ago, in addition to eyeballing my own surroundings and looking over the lists I had made previously for her older sisters, I found myself wondering what kind of items I wasn’t seeing — things that would be valuable additions to her day-to-day life but wouldn’t take up too much real estate in her notoverly-large apartment.

1 The first one I came across was a relatively new item known as The Wig Bag. A proper box to protect your sheitel from the elements, prying fingers and other hazards of the road is always a good bet if you are going away for Shabbos or traveling for a simcha, but if you have ever bought one of those cases, you know that they are typically pricey and take up considerably more than their fair share of space once you get home. The Wig Bag tackles all of those issues. It is a sheitel carrier whose fulllength twin zippers and hard walls allow for solid protection and easy access, but it folds up almost completely flat for storage. Both the original quilted Wig Bag and newer patent leather–look models are gorgeous and are available in 16½- and 20-inch sizes to accommodate sheitels of different lengths. Best of all, The Wig Bag is priced at about half the price of a conventional sheitel box.

2 Given their large size, I have always refused to get a hotplate for Shabbos, preferring instead to keep my blech on even during the shvitziest summer weekends. I had a change of heart from the minute I laid my eyes on HotMat’s unique hotplates. Their separate heating elements are connected by flexible silicone rims, allowing them to be folded up into a compact 10-inch-square box. Available in two different sizes, the smaller HotMat has two heating elements and can be linked to as many as four more identical units all running off a single plug so that you can heat up ten items at once, while the larger warmer is double the size. Both models have warm (approximately 212 degrees) and hot (approximately 302 degrees for the smaller unit and 329 for the larger hotplate) capabilities, but while the two-burner unit can be switched in entirety from warm to high, the larger hotplate doesn’t offer the same flexibility, dedicating two burners to each temperature setting. As always, check with your rav to discuss the suitability of any hotplate and its allowed Shabbos and yom tov usage.

3 If you are really looking to conserve counter space on Shabbos, you definitely want to check out the Chefman Warming Urn. Not only does it heat the water for your morning coffee very, very well, but it also comes with a special tray that fits securely over the pot’s flat lid, giving you the perfect surface to heat dry foods on Shabbos. Expected in stores imminently, the Chefman Warming Urn was built after consultation with multiple rabbanim, and an enclosed 28-page booklet detailing the many halachic issues addressed during its development. While it is always good to keep kids far away from hot water of any kind, this urn does come with a childproof safety spout and it can be refilled on yom tov.

4 While it may not be small, if you have ever experienced the dubious pleasure of walking into someone’s prepared negel vasser sitting on the floor, you can appreciate the wisdom of Kosher Innovations’ Smart Shissel. Its bowl-in-a-bowl design with a one-way drain makes it virtually spillproof, keeping your feet and your flooring dry while also eliminating halachic issues by keeping any used water completely covered. Approved by multiple rabbanim, including Harav Yechezkel Roth, zt”l, and, yblch”t, Harav Yechiel Michel Steinmetz, shlit”a, the Smart Shissel comes with a matching washing cup and in four different colors. I can assure you that no one will miss waking up to wet floors and dripping toys.

Last but not least, while Kosher Innovations’ KosherLamps are hardly a new product, they have stood the test of time and earned their well-deserved place in Jewish homes worldwide over the past seventeen years. The lamp’s twisting shade that allows light to shine or be completely covered is super helpful when it’s time to close your eyes, for pre-bedtime reading, helping guests navigate unfamiliar surroundings, travelers, the baby’s room and just about everywhere else. The latest model, KosherLamp Max, has an updated design and comes in wood tones, metallic finishes and colors to match every decor, with a nine-watt energy-efficient LED bulb that can be easily replaced. In my eyes, KosherLamp’s weak spot has always been its shade, which can be damaged by curious little fingers, but Kosher Innovations has solved that problem by selling easily installable replacements for just $5 — a reasonable price that includes shipping and handling costs. Halachically approved by Toronto’s Rabbi Shlomo Miller, you can’t ever have too many KosherLamps, which also come in a compact version for both domestic and international travel.

With new products coming out nearly every day, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overbuying, but the reality is that having too much stuff isn’t always a good thing, especially when you are dealing with limited space. Look around, see what’s out there, and ask yourself if a particular item will get used or will just end up taking up valuable real estate. And just remember — if you come across something really fabulous that will be a real asset to your daughter, you can always buy it for her after the wedding. So relax, enjoy this wonderful time in your life and hers, and get ready to shep nachas, big time!

The showroom sections are brilliantly organized to enable you to smoothly move from item to item. HIS STORY:

“Zevi , can I serve you anything?” Mrs. Biston asks. He shakes his head no. How can he eat when it feels like his tongue is plastered to his palate with glue? Besides, he barely has the strength to lift his head from the table where it’s resting. “Thanks,” he mumbles, “but my mouth is too parched for food right now. I’ll just have some orange juice.” “What’s up with you, Zevi?” His father is growing concerned. “I don’t remember a time when you were ever so listless. I think you need to see a doctor.” And that very evening, Zevi, accompanied by his mother, visits the office of Dr. Davis.

E

arly the next morning, the phone surprises the family with its trill. “Dr. Davis on the line!” Chumi, always

the early riser, calls out. “Mommy, phone call!’’ Three minutes later, Mr. Biston enters Zevi’s room. “You didn’t have any breakfast yet, right?” he asks his son. “Dr. Davis just called to say you should not eat or drink anything, and that he wants to see you again. Now. Let’s go.” Zevi blinks the sleep out of his eyes. “But Tatty,” he says, “ I didn’t even daven yet.” “You’ll daven later, Zevi,” Mr. Biston says. “I don’t think we should push this off.’’

A

t the doctor’s office, a single finger prick reveals that Zevi’s fasting blood sugar — the level of sugar in the blood in the morning before any food is eaten — is 200. A healthy range is up to 95. “Probably Type 1 diabetes,” the doctor

proclaims. “We’re sending you right over to the hospital to get your sugar levels under control. The nurses will also teach you how to keep your glucose levels stable, and more.” Relief floods Zevi’s being. For weeks he had dragged himself around half faint, subsisting mainly on orange juice, with no clue why his formerly energetic self suddenly felt so weak and tired. Sure, it would be hard getting used to administering insulin and monitoring his blood sugar. A new diagnosis is never easy. But now that the cause of the problem was identified, it could be taken care of. “Happy birthday, Zevi!” his father greets him when he rejoins Zevi and his mother in the hospital later that day. It’s just a few days before Zevi’s sixteenth birthday. “What a birthday present!” “The present is from Hashem Himself,” says his mother. “But we bought you a small something to go with it.” The hours in the hospital are so boring that Zevi welcomes the goodnatured joking. Besides, the joke is also true. Everything Hashem gives us is for our own good, including this diagnosis of diabetes, now dubbed the “birthday present.” MY STORY:

I owe it to my parents; my positive attitude is thanks to them. Even though I have cystic fibrosis, a notso-common medical condition, not once did I ever hear my father sigh, “Oy, what will be with a shidduch for Henny?” My parents never warned me to expect a hard time in the shidduch parsha; they just dealt with every122

thing as Hashem gave it to them, and I inhaled their emunah. A friend in elementary school who knew the details of my condition once asked me how I wasn’t worried about shidduchim, and I told her that my parents don’t fret about it, so neither do I.

“M

ommy, when will we start looking for a chasan for Henny?” my little brother Yossi pipes up in the shoe store one day.

Mrs. Biston to Hindy. Hindy’s mother is a wonderful shadchan who primarily helps people with medical issues. “My son has diabetes,” she continues, “and your mother goes all out trying to find a good shidduch for him.” My own mother knows many people with minor medical issues, and she’s sitting near Hindy when this conversation takes place. She tells Mrs. Biston that she, too, will try to think of someone suitable for her son.

For these two reasons I’d always looked forward to marrying someone with a medical condition. But diabetes was a different story. My mother and I laugh. I’m only in eleventh grade! But I know it is never too early to daven. “Even as girls in school,” a teacher has just told us, “you can daven for your future chasan, that he be great in Torah and middos.’’ Thus, my tefillos for my future chasan intensify. What I find out later is that around that time, he began seeking his bashert.

T

wo years pass, and I’m in shidduchum for real. Maybes, what-ifs and unknown variables come along with every suggestion. Dismayed, I realize that in spite of my positive outlook, a small worm of worry niggles in my heart. Only when I bear in mind that Hashem is taking care of me does my angst ease. Hashem has someone special out there for you, I train myself to think. And He does. OUR STORY:

We lived in different cities. Our families had never met. Each side didn’t even know that the other existed. But when Hashem wills it, things happen.

O

ne day, my family was invited to the engagement party of my mother’s close friend’s daughter. We all dress up to go. When I arrive at the hall, my mother introduces me to one of her classmates, Hindy, who lives out of town. I’ve already left the hall when Hindy is approached by an acquaintance of hers, Mrs. Biston. “Your mother is so special,” gushes

To this day we laugh about it. The shidduch idea was right there at the table, but somehow, it escaped my mother. That very night, Hindy, who knows I have a condition (don’t ask me how — we keep it secret from the public for shidduch purposes!) but doesn’t know exactly what, thinks, Hey! Maybe the bachur with diabetes is a good match for Henny? She calls my aunt to inquire further.

“T

atty,” I say one night at the supper table. The shidduch is growing more serious, and I want to know more details. “What type of condition does the bachur have?” “He has Type 1 diabetes,” answers my father, to which my mouth drops open. I always knew that I would likely marry someone with a medical issue, and that was more than okay with me. As I matured, I even looked forward to a marriage where both parties share a special understanding of what the other is going through medically. In addition, when a person goes through a hardship with the right frame of mind, the person often matures and becomes a greater person through the experience. For these two reasons I’d always looked forward to marrying someone with a medical condition. But diabetes was a different story. It wasn’t so because of the disease, per se; I simply did not want a constant reminder that I am also at risk of developing diabetes. I even blacklisted diabetes in my mind as a condition my future husband shouldn’t have. In some people, CF affects only the lungs. In others — like

myself — it also affects the pancreas. When I eat, I have to take artificial enzymes in the form of pills to digest proteins and fat, since my pancreas has a hard time producing enzymes on its own. Likewise, the chances of developing diabetes are higher for people whose CF also affects their pancreas. My father noticed the look on my face. “It’s not that daunting, Henny,” he says. “Today, it’s so much easier to take care of diabetes than it was years ago.” I think it over and come to the conclusion that my reservations about living with a diabetic are just an exaggerated preference, and not a reason to say no to a shidduch. I can handle it. “Maybe Zevi Biston would like the supper I made today,” my mother says. She winks at me over the supper table in an attempt to lighten the preshidduch jitters. “Biston?” I ask. “Is Biston a normal name?” “Yes.” My mother smiles. “Have you never heard it before?” I hadn’t. Yet as interesting as the name seems to me at the time, very soon I would bear it. A short while after the engagement party my mother attended, Zevi and I celebrate our very own engagement.

I

f I’d have had to wait years to find my bashert, or if the shidduch parsha would have been a complicated experience for me, it would have been understandable because of my medical condition. But for Hashem, nothing matters. If He wills it, things that are “supposed to” go hard go remarkably smoothly. And when our adorable little Raizy joins our family less than a year later, it feels like a wink from Hashem that reinforces the point: Nothing can stand in the way of His will.

So much has to fall into place in preparation of the big day. And despite the planning, the bookings, the lists and the careful considerations, sometimes we are left to see that we are simply not in control. Here several writers share tales of stressful wedding day mishaps. An overwhelming crisis at a time when all hinged on the smooth running of things, they can recall it now with a smile of nostalgia.

ur house was submerged in girls’ gown talk. Even my father voiced his opinion, though it was not about the color or style. “Please,” he implored. “Let’s have the gowns ready ahead of time.” We knew we couldn’t afford upscale elegant gown rentals — which were known for completing alterations at the eleventh hour — so that wasn’t a concern. We planned to purchase gowns secondhand in advance. No last-minute dashes to the dressmaker! With Hashem’s help, two weeks before Wedding Day, four gowns hung from hooks placed strategically around the house. But one thought kept niggling at my mother: Two of the gowns didn’t have that fresh, crisp look. My aunt suggested we borrow her friend’s professional steamer to easily solve that problem, and so we did. Soon the steamer was in our house. My mother looked at the steamer and the steamer looked at her. How would the two make this work? Watching the two all but circling each other, my father volunteered his help. To calm my mother and show us that he knew how to work it, he first used it on the men’s bekeshes. The results impressed all. Reassured, my mother positioned the first gown to get its steaming treatment. My father aimed the steamer confidently at the front center: PSSSTTT. Gasps escaped our mouths as we watched a black cloud streak downward onto the white fabric. My father slammed on the steamer’s brakes, but it was too late. Two days before her wedding, my sister’s gown was ruined. (We later figured that some residue of the bekeshes’ black satin had been ingested by the steamer, then spewed out the next time it was put to work.) The first responder we turned to was the dry cleaner who was renowned for his magic with difficult stains. He surveyed the damage and named an exorbitant price. And then he gave a disclaimer: No guarantee that it would come out. Should we take the chance? In the end, my sister’s creativity came to the rescue. Following her instructions, we folded the fabric, creating a loose pleat to hide the black line. For symmetry, we did the same on the other side as well. When the guests complimented my sister on her beautiful gown, those in the know also complimented her on her brilliant idea that saved the gown… and saved the day.

should have known to be more careful. This was my third child, but my first son to be married. Compared to marrying off a girl, getting a son ready for the chuppah was a breeze. A suit, shoes, hat, shirt, kittel … and, of course, the wedding band. The morning of the wedding, we were in giddy spirits. All the lists had been duly checked, and we were on schedule. Makeup, sheitels, gowns — all was in order. What could go wrong? My son had a particularly close relationship with his Rosh Yeshivah, who was the mesader kiddushin. The Rosh Yeshivah was widowed, and my son had accompanied and assisted him for over a year — and today was no exception. My son wanted to escort his Rosh Yeshivah to the wedding hall. As my son gathered his things to leave our home, I rushed after him to give him the wedding band, mentally checking off another task done. He stood still for a moment, contemplating the jewelry box, then turned to me and said, “Better that you take it. I don’t want to misplace it.” Then off he went to his Rosh Yeshivah. Within the hour, we were at the wedding hall posing for pictures and greeting guests. Before I knew it, we were ready to walk down to the chuppah. The gravity of the moment hit me. My son was about to begin a life apart from us. The kesubah was prepared, and my mind was busy reviewing the past two decades of my son’s existence. Then the Rosh Yeshivah turned to my son and said, “The ring.” My son turned to me and said, “The ring.” I looked at him and shrieked, “The ring!” It had been left on my bureau in plain sight so I shouldn’t forget it. And forget it I did! What to do? I offered my engraved wedding band, but it was rejected; same with the mechuteniste’s. Finally an aunt approached with her smooth one, and the Rosh Yeshivah nodded his approval. Saved by the ring.

t should have been a simple trip, a real no-brainer. I’d found a gown, had the gown fitted, and was there for one final try before taking it home. It should have been a quick in-and-out. What could possibly go wrong? “I’m here to pick up my gown,” I told the saleslady, who assured me that the seamstress would bring it to me in a few minutes. A few minutes quickly turned into a half hour. “Um, I’m getting married tomorrow,” I tried to gently prod the saleslady. “Can I get the gown, please?” Looking very uncomfortable, the saleslady admitted that the seamstress was still working on the collar I’d decided to add at the previous fitting. And, oh, it was a different seamstress than the one to whom I’d given the instructions. “The other one just disappeared…” she said. Twiddling my thumbs, I waited a little longer, and finally the new seamstress trudged up the stairs, a gown-sized garment bag in her arms. I’m sure my sigh of relief was audible to everyone in the room. And then I unzipped the bag. “Oh!” I exclaimed in horror. In place of my desired collar were two huge triangular projections that popped out the front of the dress, each nearly two feet long. The pointy ends of the “collar” reached the gown’s waist. I’m pretty sure I started to hyperventilate, though today I can laugh about it… Baruch Hashem, once I calmed down and explained to the new seamstress what a collar actually looks like (duh!), she fixed it quickly, and I went home with my gorgeous gown in tow...

he air crackled with excitement. Our son was a chasan, and the whole family dived into wedding mode. My dining room table was peppered with a plethora of lists, but top priority were our granddaughters, whom the kallah had requested to be “just like the flowers in my bouquet!” Our granddaughters, each of different ages and sizes from small to tall, all resided in Eretz Yisroel. The goal was to dress them all in the same style, but each in a different color. The search was on. Following every clue, we soon found a place in China that could do exactly what we wanted within the time frame we needed, and then ship the dresses to Eretz Yisroel. The children chose their colors, the mothers ruminated over the sizes, and the order was placed. Now all we could do was wait in anticipation. When the email came to inform us the dresses had been delivered, I breathed a sigh of relief that one job was done. Most of the girls were delighted with the dresses, except — When I got the call from our oldest granddaughter, she was sobbing so hard I could hardly understand what she was saying. “Bubby! I don’t want to be a banana!” I was mystified. “Darling, what do you mean?” “The dress! It looks like a banana!” she wailed. “It’s yellow!” I thought for a moment. We had ordered pastel colors, and definitely not anything bright yellow. “Perhaps they sent the wrong dress,” I soothed her. “There’s still time to sort this out.” I sent off a flurry of emails to China. “We sent the right color,” they replied. “Try taking a photo. You’ll see.” So we did. And they were right. I phoned back our granddaughter. “Darling, you won’t look like a banana. We’re going to get the dress dyed a different color. Okay?” A hiccup, then a tiny “Yes.” It took several tries, but finally the dress was transformed from banana yellow to a beautiful gray. Looking back at the photos, there’s one radiant bride clutching her beautiful bouquet, surrounded by a bouquet of smiling little girls. And the biggest smile of all is on the little girl who wasn’t a banana.

t’s never a great time to break a toe, but two weeks before a daughter’s wedding is about as far from great as it can get. After stubbing my toe, I noted, through a pain-filled haze, that the offending toe and the one next to it formed a pretty neat obtuse angle. Baruch Hashem, my podiatrist was able to see me promptly. The treatment plan was to tape the toes together and let them heal, but first he needed to straighten the broken toe. He gave me a numbing shot, then tossed me a squeeze ball. “What’s this for?” I asked. “Well, it still might hurt, so…” I cut him off with a question. “Isn’t squeezing a ball the last thing I should be doing?” I tossed him the ball and spent the next few minutes slowly breathing in and out. Straightening my toe didn’t turn out to rate that high on the pain scale, but I still had a restless night. Within 36 hours, b’chasdei Hashem, I felt pretty good. A week later, I even felt good enough to walk a mile and a half each way to the bar mitzvah of the son of my Partner in Torah. I did walk in Crocs, but I was not going to wear the same to the wedding. My doctor kindly offered to come to the wedding to give me an anti-inflammatory and numbing shot that would allow me to wear the shoes I’d planned on wearing, but I couldn’t take him up on his generous offer as it didn’t include his flying east. In the end I found some blue Jambu shoes that I could wear without my toe screaming, and the flowers on the strap even added a festive note to my getup. All was wonderful… until we piled out of the van the night before the wedding and I realized that I needed to get my gown hemmed if I was going to wear these much lower shoes safely! Thank you to my dear daughter-in-law’s brilliant seamstress aunt, all was soon wonderful again, and we danced all night. And the shoes? A few years later, they met their full tikkun and ended up in a consignment store.

hen my eldest was born, Aunt Faige, known for her sense of humor, gifted my daughter with an undershirt with the following words: “It’s not my fault that I was dropped in a box of glitter when I was a baby and I’ve been shining ever since.” The undershirt was wrapped in an oversized box alongside a classroomsize container of glitter. We didn’t proceed with a glitter bath, but Aunt Faige never ceased to take credit for Chaya Sara’s sparkle. For really, with her twinkly eyes and smiling, easygoing personality, Chaya Sara did leave a sparkle wherever she went. Fast forward two decades, and her sparkle is there full force on her wedding day. But this time it wasn’t all natural. As the mother of the bride, I considered myself lucky with my dress. I managed to order a designer dress for a fabulous price. And it needed no alterations. Obeying my friends’ stern warnings not to try it on every day to see how many inches I lost and gained by the hour, I left the beauty in the garment bag until the big day. In the hall, I had someone help me into my dress. That’s when I suddenly realized that the unlucky someone was swathed in a layer of glitter. Culprit? My dress. The dress was shedding glitter like dogs shed hair. Glitter here, glitter there; the glitter was everywhere! I didn’t have something else to change into, and really, how much more glitter could one dress shed? But keep shedding it did. Every guest glimmered with at least a speck or two, and I tried my very best not to infect any lavishly plated portions. During dancing, the glitter beat the confetti, and my younger son, sporting a glittery fleck on his sweaty nose, happily informed me that the musician got some glitter on his keyboard too. Every vintch to the beaming chasan and kallah included something good-humored and glitterrelated. A great measure of solace was that the sparkle of the simcha was not dulled. It was dazzling and sparkling and shimmering, like a full bottle of classroomsize glitter. B Y :

Ah, diamonds. A woman’s best friend and a man’s best bet at a gift, these sparklers take a jewelry piece up many, many notches. What’s in a stone? Let’s get ourselves in the loupe!

What’s in a Name? The word diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, which means unconquerable and indestructible — which makes quite a lot of sense for the hardest natural substance on earth.

What’s in Its Cost? The million dollar question: Why are diamonds so valuable? As all precious things go, the answer lies in their rarity. So few stones survive the difficult journey from the pits of the earth to its surface, that only about 50% of diamonds mined today are of high-enough quality to be sold. To get some perspective, 250 tons of earth are mined to produce a single, one-carat diamond!

Celebrity Diamonds The world’s largest polished diamond is the Great Star of Africa, weighing in at a staggering 530.2 carats. Pear-shaped with 74 facets, the diamond is set in a Royal Scepter and is on display with the other crown jewels in the Tower of London.

Rarest of Rare The rarest diamond color is red. This color is so uncommon, in fact, that less than 30 true red diamonds are known to exist. They’re priced at a cool million per carat, and most red diamonds in existence are less than ½ carat in size. 144

The Boro Park View

Made in the Lab Lab-grown diamonds are gaining popularity for a host of good reasons. Let’s dispel the myth about them right here: A diamond is a diamond is a lab-grown diamond. It’s just as genuine as an earth-mined one, with all the same physical, chemical and optical qualities. With advanced technology, diamonds are grown in a laboratory that replicates what occurs underground. The only difference? No harmful impact to the environment. In mining, tremendous amounts of earth are removed, and energy is used to extract diamonds from the ground. Not so with the lab-grown gems. They cost a lot less to produce, and do not deplete natural resources. So here’s to considering your next cost-effective, eco-friendly jewelry piece!

Gem Quality What makes one diamond different from its neighbor? Quality is determined by the 4 C’s:

Mamme Lashon on 47th

Carat: the weight of the diamond (not to be confused with karat, which refers to purity in gold).

The diamond trade has been dominated by frum Yidden for generations. Being forbidden from buying or working any land in the Middle Ages and beyond, Jewish merchants and craftsmen turned to precious gems — and the industry bloomed. Polishing does not require much space or equipment and diamonds are small, the perfect trade for the galus Yid so he could quickly pack up and escape in case of danger.

Which quality is most crucial, you ask? The C of all C’s is cut. This is the most important aspect where diamond quality is concerned, and it greatly impacts a diamond’s beauty. The long list of factors in the cut — its angles, proportions, symmetrical facets and more finishing details — directly impact a diamond’s sparkle and overall appeal.

In the hub of New York’s Diamond district on 47th Street, this historic influence is alive and well and clearly heard in the Russian, Indian, Dutch and French accents carefully enunciating diamond terms in mamme lashon. Here’s a sampling of irresistible treasures:

To get a picture of just how impactful the cut is, consider this list of cut types: round, princess, emerald, Asscher, radiant, oval, marquise, pear, cushion, heart and baguette! Round diamonds top the list in popularity, accounting for over two-thirds of diamonds sold. Different cuts fetch different prices, too. So, no, “diamond” does not only present in one shape.

it's your mitzvah Earn your blessing Everyone knows that a married Jewish woman must cover her hair. But recent trends are making it obvious that many people don’t know one of the basic premises of the mitzvah: To lessen attraction. Sadly, many current wigs don’t meet this requirement. They attract attention – the opposite of what a head covering should do. Lace wigs, in particular, take this attraction to a new level. Dozens of Rabbonim from many communities have just issued a clear psak against the wigs. Their cry is unanimous. Lace front and top wigs are assur to wear or sell. The Rabbonim bless those who heed their call, with nachas & great bracha.

As per the psak of the gedolim and rabbonim of Eretz Yisroel, Lakewood, Boro Park and beyond, it is assur to wear, manufacture or sell lace wigs.

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH: REFUAH HELPLINE OPENS BROOKLYN HEADQUARTERS, JOINED BY LEADING GEDOLIM, RABANIM, AND ASKANIM OF KLAL YISROEL An uplifting and moving scene unfolded this past Thursday night, Parshas Veara, when a group of respected Gedoli Hador gathered to celebrate an amazing breakthrough- the Chanikas habayis of the headquarters of Reufah Helpline which was now opened in Brooklyn. Refuah Helpline’s mission is to help every single individual who is undergoing any medical crisis, by providing guidance and support every step of the way. It continues to be their mission, which only intensifies with each passing day.

Refuah Helpline’s Mission Refuah Helpline is widely known amongst all circles as the organization which serves as a lifeline to Klal Yisroel, one which has over time grown into one of the biggest medical organizations, and one which stands at people’s sides when they get a diagnosis and is there with them throughout the lengthy process. They find the right doctors, refer them to the doctors, and are constantly standing by the sides of patients and their families from beginning to end. Refuah Helpline has liaisons in hospitals who speak to the doctors and to families, and are unbelievably helpful, especially in these trying, difficult times. Over 50 caseworkers dedicate their every breath to the lives of those who need their help- people who find

themselves in complicated medical situations. They are there for them and support them, day, and night. Patients and their families are confused and so lost in the medical world when they reach out to Refuah Helpline. They are pained and unfamiliar with all that is happening. But the people at Refuah Helpline are there to guide them and help them throughout the entire ordeal, until the full Refuah Sheleima. With time, the headquarters located in Kiryas Yoel has reached the point where they became overwhelmed by the number of cases they were dealing with, the questions they answered, the referrals they arranged, and the guidance they provided. They receive thousands upon thousands of phone calls, ranging from simple medical situations to complex medical situations. And although it gets tiring, overwhelming, and emotionally draining, stopping is not an option. Because Refuah Helpline will never leave a call unanswered. And it is with that mission moving forward, that Refuah Helpline forged ahead, and opened a brand new headquarter in Brooklyn so that everything they stand for and believe in, can now be continued.

The Rabbinical Participation The new headquarters finally opened in Brooklyn, after investing

huge amounts of money, time, work, and effort. A beautiful new office, fully supplied, will now host a full new Refuah Helpline staff. They are ready, willing, and able to be there for those who need them, offer the right support, guide them, and alleviate some of their burdens. The greater the staff, the greater the number of people being helped. All this comes with much investing. What is essentially happening, is that the Refuah Helpline budget, which is quite high already, is doubling. Another headquarters means more financial responsibilities. When the moment has finally arrived, after monetary aspects have been taken care of, after so much effort and work has been invested, and after so much heart and soul was put into the new offices, it was only deemed appropriate to celebrate its opening, joined by Gedolei Harabanim, and a select few Askanim who are involved in Refuah Helpline on a daily basis. The importance and holiness of Refuah Helpline were so evidently proven, by the fact that these Torah giants took time off their learning and paskening, to be present and give their blessings on the new headquarters. Viznitz Rabbi Yerushalayim Everyone listened to the words and blessings from the Viznitz Rabbi Yerushalayim attentively. As a Rabbi whose heart is open to the sick and brokenhearted, the Rabbi

Shlita is very closely acquainted with the holy Refuah Helpline and knows them as a ray of hope. The Viznitz Rabbi, who is an actual epitome of chessed, and is constantly involved in the medical field, expressed with deep emotion how he sees Refuah Helpline’s work up close, how they hold Cholei Yisroel’s hands and walk with them together.

Rabbi Binyomin Landau Rabbi Binyomin Landau, Tosh Dayan of Boro Park is known as someone who is extremely experienced and knowledgeable within the medical field. When life and death is on the line, he is the one who makes major medical decisions. “Yiddishe kinder are being helped by this organization in an extraordinary way. It is this space here that will serve as a shluchis for hatzals nefashos within klal Yisroel” Such words said by someone who deals with life and death matters all day hit differently. They have more meaning- more depth.

Helpline meant a lot. Rabbi Michoel Steinmetz is a living example of someone who does Chessed at every available opportunity. Rabbi Zisha Ausch Everyone had the honor to hear the wise words of Hagoan Rabbi Zisha Ausch, who helps thousands of Yidden, and serves as the Satmar Dayan regarding medical matters. Reuah Helpline has the privilege of having Rabbi Ausch part of their board and serving as the Rav and Posek within the organization. He is involved daily with the many extensive, serious medical shailos that people face. He is the one who answers these very seriously complex Shailos. He puts his heart and soul into every individual case and deals with it with the help of his extensive medical knowledge and Rabbinical guidance. He is there for Refuah Helpline and for Klal Yisroel 24/7.

With tremendous Chizuk and encouragement, the new Brooklyn Refuah Helpline Headquarters was finally about to open. Everyone drank a Lchaim, as the Rabanim gave brachos that they should be able to continue doing what they’re doing. They should be able to continue the holy lifesaving work and help the Cholei Yisroel who count on them. With renewed strength and renewed inspiration, the Brooklyn Headquarters finally opened. The new staff and case managers are invigorated, and ready to take on the daily privilege of helping Klal Yisroel with passion and warmth. They are prepared to answer Klal Yisroel’s call, and never turn them down. In conclusion, it must be emphasized clearly and unequivocally that

The Dayan who is personally involved in the holy work on a daily basis expressed that the place they were all standing in, is just like the headquarters in Kiryas Yoel. “One big factory of chessed and hatzala for Yiddishe kinder” He then stressed the great merit that Askanim, sponsors, and anyone involved, have. L’chaim!

this development, which will undoubtedly help many people, has only been possible thanks to the ongoing financial help of all of Klal Yisroel- the tens of thousands of loyal supporters around the world, who know and recognize the heart that Refuah Helpline has, and who will continue with their support so that more people can be helped, till we will be zoche to the geula, and no one will know of any pain.

Rabbi Hershel Ausch It was an honor to host the presence of Rabbi Hershel Ausch, father of Rabbi Zisha Ausch, and someone who embodies Chessed and is involved in Refuah Helpline up close. Rabbi Ausch made an effort to attend, to be able to participate in the Kvias Mezizah of the new headquarters, which will undoubtedly help so many more Yidden. “It gets difficult to constantly hear of pain and suffering. But Baruch Hashem, we stand here today and knock on the Shaarei Refuos. And with the amount of Chessed Refuah Helpline does, it is guaranteed that Hashem will send so many blessings through this door.”

Rabbi Mechel Steinmetz The world-renowned Posek, Hagoan Reb Michoel Steinmetz, strongly and passionately stated “The room that we are standing in right now, is a place of Hatzlas Nefashos. This is where they save Yidden from death, by referring them to the right doctors and helping them in whichever way.” Hearing this from someone who is so involved with the work of Refuah
