Chezky’s Story HOW WE
BEAT PANDAS
What’s wrong with Chezky? I watch him pace restlessly, his eyes darting nervously to and fro. Who is this jumpy, anxious eight-year-old? Chezky’s usual upbeat personality is gone. Now he’s bouncing with nervous and irritable energy, punctuated by random, explosive mood swings. “Vitamins,” his pediatrician advises. I run to the pharmacy to buy the vitamins the doctor recommends, a prayer on my lips.
Chezky is beginning to show symptoms of OCD, and his restlessness is at an all-time high.
The vitamins don’t help at all. A week later, we’re back at the doctor’s office. Chezky is beginning to show symptoms of OCD, and his restlessness is at an all-time high. His siblings have learned to tiptoe around him, afraid of being the reason for yet another outburst. Chezky’s doctor orders a full panel of blood work as well as a throat culture. The strep culture comes back negative. The blood work shows that his ASO titers and DNase levels are elevated, indicating a recent strep infection in his blood. These results and his OCD and ADHD symptoms lead the doctor to a diagnosis: Chezky has PANDAS. PANDAS occurs when the child’s immune system produces antibodies to attack strep bacteria and it also fights the regular bacteria. Some of these antibodies head to the brain, causing OCD, tics, and other neuropsychiatric symptoms. The doctor prescribes a 30-day round of
Zithromax. I hold Chezky’s hand tight as we leave the clinic, feeling hopeful. I’m certain that we’ve kicked this terrifying episode to the curb. The antibiotics do their job for 30 days. Chezky seems calmer, almost like his usual, relaxed self. As soon as the 30 days of antibiotics are done, Chezky’s tics and restlessness return with a vengeance. Panicking, I confer with the doctor, who prescribes another 30 days of Zithromax. The medication is not as effective as the first time around and as soon as we complete the 30 days of medication, all the symptoms return, worse than before. Chezky’s eye tics, his OCD, his anxiety, and restlessness all come roaring back. “I don’t know what to say,” the pediatrician says. “It seems to be an autoimmune issue. Perhaps try a gluten-free diet?” We convene with a different doctor in the clinic who prescribes Augmentin. I give it to Chezky for 30 days but there are no positive changes to his condition. Desperate and determined, I stop into a Williamsburg health food store and purchase all the holistic treatments the salesperson recommends. Doctors or no doctors, I will find a cure for my son. Back home, I call everyone I know, searching for someone - anyone - who might have the answers I need. With no information forthcoming, we try
What is Imbue? Imbue is a center where we combine aromatherapy, massage techniques and essential oils to ease physical, mental and emotional ailments.
What are aromatherapy and essential oils? Aromatherapy is a treatment where we apply essential oils to your skin. Essential oils are natural derivatives from flowers, herbs and trees that are infused with incredible healing qualities.
How does the treatment work? We run a test to find out which essential oils will work best for your body. Then, our trained practitioner uses a combo of aromatherapy and massage therapy to gently apply the treatments to your skin.
How often can I receive essential oil treatment? You can receive treatment twice a week, weekly, biweekly, monthly or seasonally. We listen to your body’s needs to determine the direction of the treatment.
Which essential oils do you use? The standard Raindrop Technique used by many practitioners consists of a basic combination of essential oils. At Imbue, we create a customized essential oil blend.
Can my family member perform the treatment for me or can I perform the treatment for my child? We offer a convenient option for patients who don’t live local. Our therapist explains the technique as she does it so that our patients can perform treatment by themselves after coming in once for a scan and session. Following their first visit, we call them with a list of oils that we would recommend, we assist them in placing the order of the oils at young living, and offer one-month phone support.
After how many treatments can I expect to see a difference? It’s impossible to predict, as the results depend on multiple factors, such as symptoms, severity, frequency, etc. The majority of our clients have seen improvements within the first month.
What are some conditions of previous clients? We have successfully helped clients with PANDAS, Lyme disease, migraines, back pain, anxiety, colitis, acid reflux and many more.
Other than the Raindrop Technique, what other services does Imbue offer? We now offer a full array of therapeutic massages at our upscale facility, including Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, medical, hot stone, and more.
Now offering our services free of charge for those eligible. a fermented food diet and then a gluten-free diet. But the tics are more severe than ever, and the diets don’t seem to help much, so we give up on that tactic, too. I’m at a dead end. My son is suffering. His siblings want their old Chezky back. His Rebbi has been kind and patient throughout the ordeal, but he’s at a loss dealing with a nine-year-old who hasn’t learned steadily for nearly a year. That’s it, I resolve. I must put an end to this. I dive into the research again and come across a story about a mother whose child experienced a similar ordeal. Excited and hopeful, I reach out to her to find out what method she used to heal her child. “It’s called the Raindrop Technique,” she explains over the phone. This method involves using essential oils and massages to reduce inflammation and kill viruses and bacteria in the spine. I purchase the oils and later that week, begin the regimen. The improvement is instant! I can hardly believe the transformation that’s happening before my eyes. After the first treatment, Chezky calms down significantly. Diligently, I apply the treatments and become familiar with the oils’ and massages’ healing properties. Within two months, Chezky is entirely symptom-free. Our beloved Chezky is back! It’s now five years later. With Hashem’s help, Chezky hasn’t experienced a single flare-up. We put the matter to rest, glad that it’s all behind us. And then I get a phone call. My aunt is on the line, asking me about Chezky’s PANDAS experience. One of her kids is exhibiting symptoms, and she needs guidance. I launch into an impassioned speech about the Raindrop Technique and how much it helped us. “If it helped you this much,” she says,” why aren’t you helping others find this incredible cure?” She’s right, I realize. And Imbue was born. At our center, we use a potent combination of aromatherapy and massage therapy to gently bring our clients back to health. With the help of our certified practitioners, we’ve helped many children by using the Raindrop Technique. Today we operate out of Williamsburg. Our office phone continually rings with people asking questions about various ailments. We do our best to help guide them in finding the antidote for their pain and suffering. Over time, we’ve fine-tuned and customized our services. We digitally scan each patient to correctly match them with the oils that they need most. The significant results are a welcome reprieve for our clients. Many of them have been searching for a cure for a long while. The Raindrop Technique has helped many. If you or anyone you know is suffering and in pain, get in touch with Imbue. We’ll help guide you to a complete recovery. IMBUE 718.666.3963

(Re: Stitch by Stitch, Issue 115) As someone who has spent a lot of time sewing in her lifetime, I absolutely loved the glimpse you gave us of Malka Serkin’s quilting work. There’s nothing quite like workmanship done by hand. The various different methods mentioned, and the ensuing beautiful products, sparked my imagination. O. Fried

Did You Know? Many theories have arisen over the years regarding the precise location of Krias Yam Suf. One recent opinion claims it was on the banks of Nuweiba in Sinai, about 60 kilometers south of Eilat. About 40 years ago, an American researcher named Ryan Mauro discovered lots of bones as well as some chariot wheels made of metal and gold underwater, some 1.5 miles from the shore. (Some wheels are on display today at the Wyatt Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.) Not far from the site, archeologists also discovered two identical granite pillars on both sides of the Gulf of Eilat. Inscribed in it were the words, “Mitzrayim, Meisu, Shlomo, Edom, Pharaoh, Moshe, Mayim” and the name of Hashem. It is believed that these pillars were erected by Shlomo Hamelech.

was a frosty November night when his heart gave its final beat. And she was alone. Completely and utterly alone. First, there was numbness. Then cruel tentacles of raw grief clutched at her heart. It hurt. And she was afraid. So afraid. Two weeks later, she was preparing some tea in her kitchen, attempting to rid herself of the everpresent chill in her bones. The doorbell rang. She set her mug down and went to open the door. A
smiling Misaskim volunteer stood holding a box. “A freilichen Chanukah! This is from Project Yedid.” And he was gone. Project who? She picked up the box and took note of the little logo. Project Yedid of Misaskim. What was that? Misaskim had played a huge role during the shivah. But shivah was over. And when the last chair was folded, the coat rack taken down, and the signs and covers removed, she didn’t think she would hear from Misaskim again. She opened the box and was caught by total surprise. There were toys, games, envelopes of spending cash, and little blue packets of dollar bills bearing the blessings of some of the greatest gedolim of the generation. A lump of grateful tears lodged itself in her throat. She closed her eyes and let the warm feelings wash over her. Someone was The pre–yom tov distribution dispatched from the Boro Park warehouse.

surprise is not at all unique. Misaskim is all about the shivah deliveries, right? Wrong. There are so many hidden facets to Misaskim — and that is the way the volunteers prefer it. For years, they have shied away from the public eye, preferring to do much of their holy work discreetly and without recognition. But it’s time to lift that cover and take a peek at some of Misaskim’s inspiring work. When a family is hit with the crushing loss of a loved one, they are engulfed in an overwhelming wave of emotions. It’s a solace for them knowing that someone is stepping up to the plate and taking the burden. And that is Misaskim. Misaskim is at the helm of providing for these families before, during and after the week of shivah, doing everything in their power to make the time feel that much more bearable. The bereaved families draw comfort in knowing that Misaskim is involved, will walk them through the process, and will hold their hands going forward.
Throughout their trying times, Misaskim remains a wellspring of comfort, care, and compassion. One of the most closely guarded and beloved secrets of Misaskim is the work they do for the almanos and yesomim of the community. Throughout their trying times, Misaskim remains a wellspring of comfort, care and compassion. As one woman wrote, “Just knowing someone cares is truly heartwarming.” Misaskim believes that families dealing with grief and loss should not have to carry the burden alone. That is why Project Yedid fills in in their time of need, enabling them to cover many expenses with their dignity intact. Misaskim is on their toes all year round, sending beautiful care packages for every occasion. At the start of the school year, fam-

ilies receive a package of school supplies, personalized for each child’s age and grade. Before yom tov, in many neighborhoods, cases of paper goods are delivered, giving some relief during an already expensive month. Sukkos packages include sukkah decorations, toys, books and treats. Yom tov, which is often a reminder of what the yesomim are missing, tends to be quite painful. That is why Project Yedid arranges entertaining chol hamoed events on Sukkos and Pesach, delighting the yesomim and easing their pain. Then there are the heartwarming Chanukah packages, gourmet Purim seudos, and Shavuos packages with flowers and delicacies. When the summer rolls around, Project Yedid’s camp fund enables yesomim to have an escape and refresh themselves for the year ahead. As always, it’s the little details that make Misaskim who they are: adding a gluten-free option at the Purim seudah; accommodating a special shechitah or hechsher; or setting up the almanah with an accountant to help her navigate her finances. These things are often overlooked, but not by Misaskim. Besides their regular activities, Project Yedid is constantly launching new initiatives, filling a necessary void for the almanos and yesomim of the community. For Project Yedid families, these gestures feel like a giant hug, giving them the feeling of being embraced, cared for and remembered. As one young child wrote, “I was so glad deep, deep inside that people didn’t forget about us.” Misaskim provides care and direction with heart, supporting the community through their darkest moments. Misaskim is always there. Lifting spirits. Illuminating hearts. Wiping tears.

TELL ME WHAT BEING A VOLUNTEER FOR MISASKIM IS LIKE FOR YOU.
Besides the regular shivah deliveries, we often get calls to help almanos in various ways. For example, an almanah called recently that her telephone system wasn’t working properly. We took care of that, and while we were there, we also fixed her leaking toilet and some loose hinges. We’re trained to look around, assess what needs to get done, and do it with the utmost respect. We also assist with tragedies and disasters, which require a lot of coordination and effort but, baruch Hashem, don’t happen often. HOW DO YOU BALANCE A JOB AND VOLUNTEER WORK?
When you have a job, you make sure it gets done because that’s what’s expected of you. Volunteer work is completely different — it comes from the heart. Somehow, time expands to make room for chesed when you set your mind to it. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS UNIQUE ABOUT MISASKIM BROOKLYN?
It’s amazing to watch all walks of life join seamlessly to help Klal Yisroel. Our volunteers are so different from each other, but none of that matters. Everyone works with their unique strengths and skills, and it meshes beautifully. WHAT DO YOU WISH OTHERS WOULD KNOW ABOUT MISASKIM?
Many hear Misaskim and they think of lights, sirens and public disasters. But 90% of what we do is very private and not something most people know about. This is true even with the shivah deliveries; people underestimate the amount of time and effort that goes into taking care of each call.

Ushering in a New Era, Hochul Prioritizes Ethics in State of the State Address
Jewish Community Shines as Volunteers Flock To Help Bronx Fire Victims
Governor Kathy Hochul came out strongly in favor of ethics and transparency as she delivered her State of the State address last Wednesday, making frequent allusions to disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo without ever mentioning his name. Hochul described a to-do list that includes instituting term limits for the state’s highest elected officials, which include limiting the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller to two consecutive four-year terms each, reported USA Today. Cuomo was in his third term as governor when he resigned, holding his position for ten years, seven months and twenty-three days. “For government to work, those of us in power cannot cling to it,” said Hochul. “We need to continually pass the baton to new leaders, with different perspectives and fresh ideas.” Since they would require a change to the state constitution, Hochul’s proposed term limits would need to be approved by the legislature as well as New York voters. The governor also sought to bar state officials from earning outside income while in office, noting that they should be spending their time focusing on the job they were hired to do: serving their constituents. Cuomo got a $5.1 million book deal as governor for a COVID book hailing his leadership, although he may have to forfeit those funds pending a decision by a state ethics committee inquiry. The state’s Joint Commission on Public Ethics, which has come under fire for its lack of independence, was another Hochul target. The governor suggested replacing JCOPE — which was not required to share information under the state’s Freedom of Information Law and Open Meeting Laws — with a rotating board of five members that would prioritize transparency. That effort would go a long way toward restoring trust, said Hochul, as would stronger ethics requirements for local officials. “Too often, previous administrations worked against, not with, the legislature, or altogether ignored the critical constitutional role of the legislature in our government,” observed Hochul in the introduction to her State of the State address. “My administration has demonstrated that there is a different, better way to get things done. “I have not made a single decision in a vacuum,” added Hochul, in stark contrast with Cuomo whose “my way or the highway” approach to governing often ruffled feathers and ultimately became his downfall. Acknowledging that New Yorkers have lost faith in government, Hochul vowed to do her part to repair the damage done by her predecessor, promising to “lead by example in showing the people what good, honest, functioning government looks like.”
Just hours after a deadly five-alarm blaze raged through a nineteen-story Bronx apartment building, teams of volunteers from Masbia and Boro Park Shomrim were on hand, distributing food and supplies to stunned fire victims. Masbia’s Alexander Rapaport and Shomrim’s Motty Brauner met up in the Boro Park Bingo Wholesale store, spending $5,000 on toiletries and snacks, reported VIN News. As Shomrim volunteers distributed toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, baked goods and drinks to residents of the scorched building, Masbia put together a food order with Greenfield’s catering, arriving on scene with a tent, a massive pot and an outdoor propane stove. Volunteers ladled out containers of hot soup to ward off the cold winter temperatures, with trays of chicken nuggets and rice set out to feed those who needed a solid meal. Initial reports say that the fire was caused by a defective space heater that was in use in a duplex apartment located on the building’s second and third floors. Approximately 200 firefighters responded to the blaze, with more than five dozen residents injured and nearly 20 dead as of Sunday afternoon, a total that included children. The horror of the day’s events left the victims stunned.

“You could feel the sadness when we got there,” said Brauner. “People were talking quietly, and there was a heavy weight in the air. The smiles we got when we came to help out had us feeling glad that we came.” It took three Shomrim SUVs plus three Ubers to bring all of the supplies purchased to the Bronx, with everything distributed to the fire victims. “You could see in their eyes how grateful they were,” said Rapaport. “When people are very broken, anything you do to show that you care, whether they like your rice or not, makes a big difference.”

With Mayor Eric Adams failing to exercise his veto power, a City Council measure drafted last month has now passed into law, giving noncitizens holding green cards the right to vote in municipal elections. The Associated Press reported that the new law affects 800,000 city residents and could have them casting their ballots as soon as next year. More than twelve communities in the United States already allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, but none are as large as New York City. In order to be eligible to vote, noncitizens would have to have been lawful permanent residents of the city for at least 30 days. Also covered under the law are “dreamers,” young immigrants who were brought into the country as children under the DREAM or DACA Act, as well as noncitizens who are authorized to work in the United States. “I believe that New Yorkers should have a say in their government, which is why I have and will continue to support this important legislation,” said Adams. The effort was spearheaded in the City Council by former Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, who was just tapped by Adams as the head of the city’s Department of Transportation. “We build a stronger democracy when we include the voice of immigrants,” said Rodriguez. The law is likely to be challenged in court, with opponents saying the City Council exceeded its authority by allowing noncitizens to vote, an initiative that should have been handled by state lawmakers. Alabama, Arizona, Colorado and Florida all have measures in place that would prevent similar actions from being taken within their borders.

wood, Flatbush, New Lots, Brownsville, East New York, Bushwick, Ridgewood, Middle Village, Maspeth and Jackson Heights, reported ABC News. It would also add several new stations in areas that are not currently served by existing train routes. Currently, most train routes between Brooklyn and Queens take riders through Manhattan, adding to commute times. Hochul directed the MTA to start the project’s environmental review process, the first step toward making the Interborough Express a reality. The project could connect residents of Brooklyn and Queens with over fifteen train lines, as well as the Long Island Rail Road. Hochul described the proposed line as a cutting-edge infrastructure project. “New Yorkers deserve reliable public transit that connects them from work to home and everywhere in between,” said Hochul. “The Interborough Express would be a transformational addition to Brooklyn and Queens, cutting down on travel time and helping neighborhoods and communities become cleaner, greener and more equitable.”
New Nursing Home Visitation Rules Take Effect With New York unable to enforce vaccination and booster requirements for nursing home visits, new rules that went into effect this week will employ another tactic to keep residents safe in the wake of the latest pandemic surge. As of January 12, would-be visitors to nursing homes must wear surgical masks and present a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within the last 24 hours. WGRZ reported that nursing homes would be given test kits, but Hochul recommended that visitors test in advance to save time and state-supplied testing kits. “We prefer that they do it at home,” said Hochul. “Bring the results — show us. Or do it in the parking lot before you go in — show us that it’s true. But also, we will provide the tests.” According to Hochul, the state had no choice but to put the new rules in place, noting that visitors who bring COVID-19 into a facility can infect an untold number of people. She emphasized the importance of allowing visits from family members, explaining that the new rules were being instituted in lieu of the previous isolation policies, which were devastating to residents. “People literally sat in their rooms, not understanding why their loved ones could not visit them,” noted Hochul. “We understand this — we truly do.” The governor’s push to beat back COVID-19 also included a booster mandate for all health care workers statewide, with no test-out option available, reported PIX 11. The Centers for Disease Control is now advising that booster shots be given five months after the initial vaccine series is completed, a month sooner than had been initially recommended. “Getting boosted is a common sense move,” said Hochul. “We do not want people to keep having breakthroughs.”
GE Drops Shabbos Mode in New Ovens General Electric’s Shabbos mode, a feature that has been in place on its ovens for years, is no longer being included as a stan62

dard component of any of its freestanding or wall ovens. Boro Park 24 reported that GE decided not to renew its contract with Star-K kashrus, whose rabbanim had been giving their stamp of approval to the widely used Shabbos mode. Instead, GE will be providing an optional mode called “The Shabbos Keeper,” which will be under the rabbinical supervision of the Orthodox Union and will add an extra $200 to $250 to the price of ovens that include the feature. Star-K president Rabbi Avrom Pollak said that it would continue to stand behind any oven that was installed before January 1, 2022, and that it was continuing to certify Shabbos mode in all of GE’s refrigerators. He stressed that Star-K did not pull its hechsher because it found any halachic problems with GE ovens and that it would continue to certify ovens from other companies including Electrolux, Frigidaire, Samsung, Sub-Zero and Whirlpool. “We are very much in favor of the Shabbos mode, which allows frum families to keep their food warm on pre-set timers, without lights going on or anything beeping,” explained Rabbi Pollak. “Plus on yom tov, when cooking and adjusting temperatures is permissible, families use the Shabbos feature to cook and to adjust temperatures, which change by time delays.” GE’s decision to charge extra for a Shabbos feature certainly isn’t a plus for the Jewish community, noted Rabbi Pollak. “It used to be that the Shabbos mode was included in most GE ovens,” observed Rabbi Pollak. “Now, if you buy a GE oven, you have to buy this added-on ‘Sabbath Keeper,’ which is another expense. It’s a very big inconvenience.”
Judge Fines Airline for Failing to Provide Kosher Meals American Airlines will have to pay nearly $3,000 in fines to two passengers who never received their promised kosher meals on long-haul flights. The Dallas Morning News reported that a Brazilian judge ordered American Airlines to pay 6,000 Brazilian reals (approximately $1,065) to Levi Yitzchak Beer who said that he did not receive the kosher food he ordered on his ten-hour flight from New York to Sao Paulo, Brazil. American Airlines was also ordered to pay 10,000 Brazilian reals (approximately $1,770) to Ana Treiger Wajchman, who did not receive her kosher meals on two flights — an approximately twelve-hour flight from Madrid to Philadelphia and a nearly eight-hour trip from Chicago to London. According to the Simple Flying website, the court ruled that since American Airlines advertises that it offers passengers fifteen different types of special meals, it had breached its obligations under consumer protection laws by not providing the kosher meals that had been ordered. The fine also included a fee for emotional suffering, with the two passengers facing distress because they were not able to eat while everyone around them was provided with food. One Mile at a Time reported that the Brazilian judge ruled that neither of the passengers were required to prove that they hadn’t been served meals, but that it was the airline’s responsibility to prove that the food had been served, something that American Airlines was not able to do. American Airlines does note on its website that it can only provide kosher food on flights out of Brazil that depart from Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, and that no kosher food is available on flights departing from India.

CHAPTER FORTY RECAP: Ariella
bumps into a group of Arab women chanting in Arabic — and is shocked to discover Aliza among them. As she gets ready to flee, she learns that Aliza is an Arab woman whose real name is Aziza. Ariella, hesitant to go back home, wonders where she should go next.
S
arah Reiness rummaged around in her kitchen cabinets. Jellybeans, Cheetos and Bissli. That’s what Elazar bought for Nechemiah for the Shabbosos he came home, but she could not bring any of those things for Bassi’s children. So what could she take? Walnuts and almonds? The little ones could not eat that. What would keep them quiet while she watched them? Elazar walked into the kitchen. “How is Yisroel Meir?” he asked. “Bassi says that he’s on strong painkillers right now, and that they’re taking him into surgery first thing tomorrow morning.” She sighed. “It’s amazing how these things happen sometimes to the easiest and most placid children. How did Bassi put it? If Gadi would have fallen from a tree and broken two legs in such a dreadful way, she would not have been surprised. But Yisroel Meir! He’d climbed up to get a ball down for the first grade! And it was at a height of barely six feet!” “Hashem yishmor, poor kid… I hope those medications are doing something to ease his pain.” “Bassi says they are.” “Good. I see here that there are craisins and dried apricots left over from Tu B’Shevat. Works?” She threw him a grateful smile. “Perfect,” she said. “Not that they’re Bassi’s favorites, either, since they’re also full of sugar and preservatives and chemicals that dry it out and whatever else, but it’s the lesser of the evils.”

He studied the small words on the packaging. “No, it’s not even as evil as you think — there’s no sugar in it.” “So then there’s certainly artificial sweetener in it.” She smiled. “But it’s fine. Bassi says I’m free to do whatever I want with her children.” She closed her large handbag with a click and turned to leave. “What did Osher want earlier?” she suddenly asked in a whisper as she passed the door to his room. “It seems that he thought he saw someone in the yard downstairs, but it must have been his imagination.” He took his hat and the keys to the car, lingering long enough to close the door that separated the house from their private quarters. Sarah was already downstairs, and she opened the gate. “Ella?!” she gasped in alarm. “Ella Rothman?” Her client stood there with a look of sheer panic in her eyes. Ella didn’t respond. She was gripping a suitcase in one hand and fumbling with the long strap of her handbag with the other. “Ella?” Sarah drew closer. “Is everything okay? You look… well, not good. What happened?” “I don’t know what happened. I don’t know.” “What does that mean, you don’t know?” Sarah put a hand on her shoulder. “What happened? What scared you? Did you fall? Did you get hurt?” “No, baruch Hashem.” Sarah noticed that Ella’s eyes were fixed on some point up the stairs. Sarah turned around to see what she was looking at; it seemed she was staring at their second floor. “So what happened?” “She… she’s an Arab,” Ella croaked. “I saw her in the street. And not just an Arab… She’s half a witch, or something, I don’t even know what.” “Who?” “Aliza.” Ella took a deep breath. “Aliza. And it’s not even her real name.” “Who is Aliza?” “The lady I was boarding with.” “So, she’s an Arab… and half a witch? What do you mean?” “She lights candles and then waits for their light to do things for me…” Ella trembled. “I wasn’t afraid at first. But this evening I saw her, and I suddenly realized...” “Poor girl…what a trauma!” And Ariella burst into tears. Out of the corner of her eye, Sarah saw Elazar in the yard. She moved aside to let him pass to the car and motioned for him that she’d be there in one minute. This emergency was no less pressing than Bassi’s children’s emergency. “I was walking here in the area this evening, and I suddenly saw her with a group of Arab women. They were acting strange, chanting in Arabic, and she was holding a candle in her hand… I ran to pack my things, because I felt like I couldn’t stay with her anymore once I knew about all this — we’d already had a very strange encounter a few days ago.” She paused to breathe, realizing that she sounded hysterical and incoherent. “Something about candles and strange words… At that time I thought to my-

self that she just had some weird beliefs and was a little delusional. But then, after what I saw today, I decided to leave. Then —” She almost choked. Sarah looked at Elazar, who was leaning on the car and chatting on his phone. “Come,” she said to Ella, and led her to the car. “Let’s get in. I have a bottle of water and some cups. We’ll switch on the heat, you’ll drink something, and you’ll tell me all about it.” Ariella sat down in the back seat with Sarah beside her. She slowly sipped from the water, trying to calm down so she could act a bit more like herself. Actually, not like herself, but like Ella Rothman. Ella and Ariella Erenbaum had a lot in common, but there were some differences. Ella was calmer, more decisive, and sure of what she was and what she was not. Ariella had a lot less of these qualities. Ariella felt pressured by things that Ella could resolve with the wave of a hand. Sarah knew Ella, but now she was going to get to know Ariella in all her glory. “When I finished packing,” Ariella continued tremulously, “the phone rang, and the caller began to leave a strange voice message, so I decided to pick up. It was the real owner of the house, who is Jewish, and she told me that Aliza, the tenant — she called her Aziza — is actually an Arab. She was trying to reach her because Aziza hasn’t paid her rent in a few months.” “Acco is full of Arabs,” Sarah said gently. “And I didn’t get the impression until today that you’re particularly afraid of them. They’re considered all right from a security viewpoint.” “Yes, I know.” Ariella looked outside. From her place in the car, she could not see Osher’s window. “But I didn’t want to live with her.” “Well, yes, that’s understandable.” “I was about to leave when she suddenly came home. I told her I had to leave urgently. And I left. I got to the train station…” “You wanted to go home?” “Wanted? No, I didn’t want to, but I didn’t have any other option. I saw that I had more than two hours until the next train to Tel Aviv, so I sat down to wait. I had waited hardly twenty minutes when suddenly, there she was!” “Who? Aziza?” “Yes. She sat down next to me, and only then did I notice her. I had been reading until then.” “Oh my!” “Oh my is right.” Ariella smiled for the first time, faintly. “She chuckled and said to me, ‘Thought of running away? But you can’t anymore. Even if you go to America, you’ll always come back to me in the end.’” “Oh my!” Sarah repeated. “My poor girl, you must have been so scared!” “I was.” Ariella burst into tears again. “Then she took out this ugly necklace, something that I had made with her and that I had purposely left in her house.” She stopped crying. “And she said to me, ‘You left this with me, and you thought you could get away from me. But this will tie you to me forever. No matter how much you try to get rid of this necklace, it will always come back to you.’”
“No!” Sarah said forcefully. “Nonsense! There is no such thing! Yidden don’t believe in that kind of drivel!” “Are you sure?” Ella was doing the talking, but they were Ariella’s words, as if she were standing in the wings and cueing Ella to say them. “One hundred percent. Listen to me, Ella, sweetie. Acco is full of strange types. I don’t know if this Aziza is just an eccentric woman trying to frighten you, or if she belongs to a real cult or something. But she doesn’t have any real power. It’s not real; do you understand?” “But there are forces of impurity in the world…” Ariella said, her lips trembling. Sarah’s voice was hard. “There are, but your holiness, your kedushah, as a Jewish woman, is a million times stronger — and that would be putting it mildly. In general, Ella, most of the strange birds here are just charlatans.” Ariella was quiet. “I have the necklace,” she said, after a long pause. “Did it really find its way back to you by itself?” Sarah asked with a twinkle in her eyes. “I haven’t tried to get rid of it again to check. She finished talking, left it on the bench near me, and walked away. But she didn’t leave through the front entrance that leads to the street; she went toward the back entrance, to the platforms, where I was also supposed to go to board my train. She stood near the doorway and kept looking at me.” Ariella gazed out the window at the black sea. “I stood up and knew that I was going back to the street, and running to the only place that I really know here — to you. And don’t ask me why I took the necklace with me, because I have no idea. I just picked it up and stuck it into my bag.” “Probably so that you can check to see that it’s all really nonsense,” Sarah said. “Give it to me.” Ariella opened the zipper of her handbag and pulled out the string of green stones. “Now come,” Sarah said, opening the
car door. “Where to?” “To throw it into the sea.” “No,” Ariella whispered. “Yes.” Sarah spoke gently but firmly. “Look, Ella, dear, this Aziza may have taken a short course in psychology, and may have learned that anyone who would hear a promise about a necklace always finding its way back to them would be afraid to throw it away because of the simple fear of discovering that it might return. Here, she was right — you’re afraid. But you’re not going to let her call the shots, are you?” She smiled. “And the candles, and everything
and the next one. “Let’s go, help me!” she said, after the fifth stone. “It’s not nice to let a woman who is… it doesn’t matter how old, bend down so many times!” Ariella smiled and bent down to the sand. They picked up the stones and hurled them into the water, one after another, until there wasn’t a single green stone left on the sand. Then Ariella tossed the torn cord into the sea. “Do you want us to take you to Bnei Brak?” Sarah, ever practical, asked as they walked back to the sidewalk. “Wait, you said before that you don’t really want to go home.” “That’s right,” Ariella murmured. “But maybe it’s what I have to do.” “Maybe,” Sarah agreed. “Still, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to be seen in the train station for the next few weeks.” “So what should I do?” “Wait, I’ll ask my husband what to do.” “I don’t want to ruin your plans.” Ariella suddenly looked around, as though she’d just woken up from a nightmare. “You were planning to go someplace now, weren’t you? And it wasn’t a round trip to Bnei Brak.” “Wait, let me ask my husband,” Sarah repeated. She switched on the small light on the ceiling of the car. Ella still looked a bit too tense, and hunched over. Undoubtedly, the young woman had experienced a trauma, and it would take her time to recover. But what should they do with her now, at eleven at night? She and Elazar couldn’t leave Ella alone to find a solution. Sarah got out of the car, and Ariella quickly twisted around to the back window. No. There was no one at the end of the street. She took a deep breath, and with a swift motion, she pulled open the zipper of her handbag. The necklace — unsurprisingly enough — was not there.
“I had waited hardly twenty minutes when suddenly, there she was!”

else?” Ariella asked, but she followed Sarah out of the car. “It’s all to draw money from tourists. If you were an innocent non-Jewish tourist, you’d fall into her net, and continue paying her so that she could ‘spread her light to you’ and all the rest of that garbage. But you’re above all these things, far above.” They walked down to the deserted beach. Ariella was shaking. “Here you go,” Sarah said, handing her the necklace. “You are hereby honored with throwing it into the water.” “Shouldn’t I tear it first?” Ariella stared at the necklace as if, at any moment, each stone would open a mouth full of teeth. “You could, if it makes you feel better.” Ariella stuck her hand out and took the necklace. She grasped both ends of it and pulled, hard. Within a second, the thin metal cord tore, and the green stones fell onto the sand at their feet. Sarah bent down and picked up one stone. “Here!” She tossed it into the water. Then she picked up the next stone,

CITRUS CAKE 82

CITRUS CAKE This upside-down citrus cake is really beautiful and tasty. I especially love how it looks like art and is so easy to make.
INGREDIENTS 3 oranges 3 blood oranges 1 grapefruit
SUGAR SYRUP ½ cup sugar ¼ cup water
BATTER 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 cup oil 1 cup orange juice 2 cups WonderMills flour 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. baking powder 1 T. orange zest
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line a 9-inch springform pan with parchment paper, covering the bottom and sides of the pan. (Fold the parchment paper over the rim so it hugs the sides.) 2. Slice the fruit horizontally into half-inch-thick slices. Use a knife to carefully remove the skin from the citrus slices (along with the ring of peel). 3. Heat the sugar and water in the microwave until the sugar dissolves completely, about 45 seconds. Pour half of the sugar-water into the bottom of the prepared cake pan, then line the bottom with prepared citrus fruit rounds. Make sure to arrange them tightly, as the fruits shrink and you don’t want the batter to ooze through. Once arranged, pour the remaining sugar-water over the citrus fruits. Set aside. 4. In a large bowl, beat the eggs for about 5 minutes until fluffy. Add the rest of the ingredients, and beat until everything is combined. 5. Pour the batter over the sugared citrus rounds, spreading it evenly until the edge. 6. Bake for about 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before inverting onto a serving tray.

ACRYLICS. CANVAS. ALUMINUM. We've got them all!
INGREDIENTS 1 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade, recipe below) 2 oranges 3 blood oranges ½ T. blood orange zest 3 T. sugar, plus more for sprinkling ¼ cup strawberry jam 1 large egg, beaten
DOUGH 2 cups WonderMills flour 1½ sticks margarine 2 tsp. sugar 5 T. ice water Pinch salt
DIRECTIONS 1. Mix together the dough ingredients by hand. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Remove the peels, seeds and pith of the citrus fruits. Cut the peels into ¼-inch-thick slices. Keep the oranges and blood oranges separate. 4. Gently toss the sliced blood oranges with the blood orange zest and 2 tablespoons of sugar (or more, if the fruit is sour). 5. Roll out the pie crust, not too thinly, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle the crust with 1 tablespoon of sugar. 6. Spread the jam evenly over the crust, leaving a 1½-inch border. Arrange the citrus slices evenly over the jam, again leaving a 1½-inch border. 7. Gently fold the edges of the pie crust over the fruit, overlapping the crust as desired. Press gently to seal the edges. Brush the edges with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.

8. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden. Allow the galette to cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

ORANGEINFUSED SANDWICH COOKIES These orange-infused sandwich cookies look almost too pretty to eat, but don’t let that deter you from making them. They are divine!
INGREDIENTS 2 sticks margarine 1½ cups sugar 4 cups WonderMills flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 2 eggs 1½ tsp. vanilla extract 1½ T. orange zest 1 T. freshly squeezed orange juice 1 jar Tnuva cookies-and-cream chocolate cream
DIRECTIONS 1. Beat the margarine and sugar on mediumhigh speed until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Add the rest of the ingredients except the chocolate cream, and mix until combined. 2. Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Flatten each part into a disc, cover with cling wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 2 days. 3. Once the dough has chilled, preheat the oven to 350°. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Dust the rolling pin with flour and roll out the dough to about ¼-inch thickness, directly on parchment paper or a floured work surface. Using a scalloped cookie cutter, cut the dough into circles. Repeat these steps until all the dough has been used. 4. Arrange the cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheets. If desired, sprinkle/press coarse sugar into the tops. 5. Bake the cookies for 9 to 10 minutes, until they’re very lightly browned around the edges. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Yoga groups at Advenium combine age old wisdom of the human body, reflexes, and the mind-body connection, focusing on the mental health healing that can be achieved through movement. The groups work by relaxing the body and mind, making it easier to accept realities that are challenging, while exploring things occurring internally that may never have been previously noticed. The increase in awareness decreases high reactivity, allows for more conscious living, stretching us to grow in areas we thought were both physically and emotionally inaccessible. To say this is serious therapy would not be a stretch.

Imagine keeping Shabbos for an entire year straight. No work, no worries, just lots of time to pause, ponder and reflect on the purpose of our existence. In essence, that’s what happens during the special year called Shemittah.
To farmers, Shemittah means abandoning their plows and fertilizers, along with their livelihood. What does Shemittah mean to housewives and families living in Eretz Yisroel? As the fields lie fallow, how are kitchens affected?
In Eretz Hakodesh, our brothers live with extra kedusha. Even today, while we are sadly still in galus, there are mitzvos hatluyos ba’aretz that only the Yidden of Eretz Yisroel are privileged to keep. High on that list is Shemittah, the time when we are treated to a break, and to the reward of its fruitful offshoots.

The perfect bag
AT THE FRUIT STORE Let’s take a virtual trip to the local supermarket in Eretz Yisroel and see their display of fruits and vegetables. As soon as we enter, we are reminded that the produce doesn’t actually grow in the store… There are signs all over, letting us know the origins of this produce. You will see some produce marked shishis, some with a chu”l label, and still others labeled yevul nochri or otzar beis din. What do these terms mean? There are special ways to handle produce that is sanctified with kedushas Shevi’is, but these guidelines apply only to produce that actually has the holiness of Shemittah. Broadly, this means produce — mostly fruit — grown on land in Eretz Yisroel. It is possible to buy fruits that were imported from chu”l — chutz la’aretz, outside of halachic Eretz Yisroel. There are also fruits labeled shishis, indicating that their main growth was in the previous year. Toward the beginning of the Shemittah year, there can be both fruits and vegetables from the sixth year, but as the year progresses, only fruits are available in this category. Shishis produce is handled like any other product of Eretz Yisroel, meaning that terumos and maasros must be taken as usual, as it does not have kedushas Shevi’is. Matters are not as clear in regard to produce grown by a nochri in fields in Eretz Yisroel that belong to non-Jews. The poskim are divided in their opinion regarding whether this produce has kedushas Shevi’is. The Chazon Ish maintained that it is sanctified, and therefore, in what is known as “minhag Bnei Brak,” such produce is treated as holy and is not gener-

There are special ways to handle produce that is sanctified with kedushas Shevi’is, but these guidelines apply only to produce that actually has the holiness of Shemittah. ally available. The age-old minhag in Yerushalayim is otherwise, and most stores do bring in such produce, with the hashgacha of the Badatz Eidah Hachareidis. A fourth category of produce is otzar beis din. It is important to note that these fruits have kedushas Shevi’is, and they must be treated according to the halachos of this sanctified crop. While a private individual is not allowed to sell produce that has kedushas Shevi’is, Chazal permit beis din to handle the distribution of such fruits. In this way, in many homes throughout Eretz Yisroel, Yidden actually eat from holy fruits that were grown in Shemittah-observant fields.
AT HOME We’ve unpacked our fruit and vegetable order, and now it’s time to cut up a salad. First, we want to know what to look out for. With what care must we handle these fruits and vegetables? How are we to cut the cucumbers? What do we do with the orange peels? Chazal tell us that we are permitted — even encouraged — to partake in the fruits of Shemittah, but we are not allowed to waste or destroy it. That means that so long as the fruit is edible, we may not throw it out or treat it disrespectfully. 100

In the Zechus of Shemittah Rabbanit Sara Yosef shares the following tale, told by a woman she knows: One afternoon, my cleaning help was preparing to leave my home. I took some fruits from the refrigerator and handed them to her. She thanked me and left. Suddenly, it hit me — these fruits had kedushas Shevi’is! I was not permitted to give them to a non-Jew! I quickly ran after the cleaning lady and traced her until the nearest bus stop. Just as I reached the bus stop, a bus pulled up and she quickly got on. I followed her and jumped on through the back door. As soon as the cleaning lady saw me, she opened her pocket book and pulled out… some of my jewelry! I always knew that keeping Shemittah is a privilege, but I personally experienced how it is a protection, too.
This can be learned from the pasuk in Parshas Behar, “V’haysah Shabbos ha’aretz lachem l’ochlah — and the [produce of the] Shabbos of the Land should be yours to eat” (Vayikra 25:6). All fruits and vegetables must be eaten, or disposed of with extra care. Any edible parts that are not eaten must be placed in a special bag, which is basically a designated garbage. After they have decomposed, they can be disposed of as usual. Even the peels must be handled with care. Peels that are edible, like those of an apple, must be left to decay, just like the fruit itself. This is also true of peels that can be eaten even if we do not do so regularly, like the peels of a banana or an orange. The parts of a fruit or vegetable that are not worthy of being eaten — like the seeds and stems — may be disposed of as usual. Shemittah produce has a special kedushah. There is a machlokes among the Rishonim whether it is a mitzvah to eat from these fruits or if it is just a matter of handling the fruits with appropriate respect.
OUTSIDE A word of caution to flower-lovers and those who enjoy producing homegrown veggies: There are halachos to become acquainted with before gardening in Eretz Yisroel this year… Any fruits that do grow on homegrown vines or personal trees in a family’s backyard must be treated with the same care as other Shemittah fruits. In addition, these fruits are hefker — ownerless, and may be enjoyed by others. Halachos of Shemittah come to play in any public area as well, with care being given not to water the ground, even unintentionally. Fruits and vegetables with kedushas Shevi’is may not be taken out of Eretz Yisroel. If a person takes some fruits for the way when he travels out of Eretz Yisroel, he must handle the remnants with the appropriate care even after he arrives at his destination. 102

JOIN US FOR A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION WITH YOUNG WOMEN LIVING IN YERUSHALAYIM AND HEAR HOW SHEMITTAH IS FELT ON THE DAY-TO-DAY LEVEL IN ERETZ HAKODESH. “Usually, I buy my produce in a big supermarket. There is a hechsher on the entire produce department, which many people rely on. Still, now during Shemittah, I changed to a small fruit store where there is closer supervision. I don’t want to rely on the non-Jewish workers who put up the signs marking where the fruits come from. “The prices are higher in the small store, and it takes more time to make a separate stop rather than adding fruits and veggies to my regular grocery shop. But I feel it’s worth it…” —T. L.

“I was at a local park, ready to press the button on the water fountain for some water to rinse my toddler’s face, when my neighbor pointed out that the fountain was on the unpaved ground. My turning on the fountain would water the earth — a questionable act during Shemittah!”
“It’s hard to find bananas that are shishis (harvested in the sixth year) or nochri (from non-Jews). Most bananas in the stores come from Shemittah fields. So we try to eat them before they go bad, and when I feed my kids bananas, we make sure they don’t leave over much. Then we double-wrap the peels and throw them out.” —S.G.
—H.G.
“During the summer, the landscapers were very busy planting little trees. Now that it’s already Shemittah, they cannot be pruned and watered as usual. Some kids played in the bushes and plants at the entrance to our building and they will have to stay the way they are — ruined and missing flowers — until next year!”
“Our apartment is on the ground floor, so we actually have a plot of land as part of our property. We cannot take care of the grass as usual this year, and we’ll have to be careful when spilling the pool water in the summer.”
—R.B.
—M.B.E.
“We are more particular with which hechsher we use this year. That means we had to start shopping at a different store, one we don’t usually shop at. —R.T.
“The year I moved to Eretz Yisroel was a Shemittah year. I saw an ad for a series of shiurim on Shemittah and I was only too happy to attend. Then I came home and meticulously handled every fruit and vegetable exactly the way I learned. Only a while later did I realize that my efforts were for naught… The produce I was buying was not kedushas Shevi’is at all!” (As mentioned above, produce grown during the sixth year, or in chutz la’aretz — and, according to minhag Yerushalayim, the fruits of yevul nochri — do not have the halachos of Shemittah produce.) —P.K.

“Some vegetables are not widely available now… and the prices are higher than usual. When the total rings up high, I try to remind myself that it is a mitzvah! “We also changed which stores we shop at, to be extra careful.” —M.G.

“My daughters went on a school trip to Komemiyus. There, they saw up close how the tractors are literally parked for the year. They were given a tour of the fields and were allowed to pick and eat any vegetables they found. They also picked fruits that were grown last year, and the Rav of Komemiyus came to separate terumos and maasros. He also explained how the wastes of the Shemittah vegetables they had picked were meant to be disposed.”
“From time to time, there are distributions of kedushas Shevi’is produce in our shul. It really excites me when I get to serve my family Shemittah fruits. It makes me feel so holy, so lucky. We live in such a special place!

—T.G.
“It also raises awareness. My kids know to ask if they need to be careful with the vegetables they eat. But all edible parts need to be treated like kodshim — similar to the way we treat the challah that we take when baking dough (which, by the way, is a d’Oraisa only in Eretz Yisroel). That’s why I don’t let my children take Shemittah produce to school, as I want to make sure they take care of it appropriately. “I thank Hashem for the zechus to apply the mitzvos hatluyos ba’aretz on a day-to-day basis!” —C.W.

Hearing the words Upstate Produce fills the imagination with images of produce at their best, with colors aplenty beautifully displayed in your local grocery. It’s niflaos haBorei at its most tasty peak! Here The Boro Park View speaks with Upstate Produce to get some stats in honor of Tu B’Shvat.
A WORLD OF PRODUCE AT HUNTS POINT For most produce, the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx is almost the end of their journey. That’s where distributors pull up with their trailers each night to collect their bounty. For the layperson, seeing a few crates of bananas lined up is a lot. But Hunts Point provides a whole new frame of reference, boasting thousands upon thousands of boxes of produce, all lined up in a brilliant kaleidoscope of color. Hunts Point is the largest produce market in the country and serves all of New York City and much of New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut. That’s a whole lot of produce!

WHERE DOES ALL THIS STOCK COME FROM? The list of produce is limitless, and where they’re each sourced as well, but we’ll mention a few fruits and where they’re most commonly sourced:
112
Pomegranates come from California in the winter, and from about April until July, they’re sourced from Chile and Spain.
Grapes are grown in California and Chile.
Oranges are mostly sourced from California.
Kiwis come from New Zealand.
Carrots are mostly from California, and before Pesach we get them from Texas.
Knob celery also grows in Texas.
The Boro Park View
Avocados come from Mexico, Peru and California.
Potatoes come from… Idaho. Yukon potatoes are grown in California, Indiana, Minnesota and Canada.
An interesting note about potatoes: Potatoes are only a once-yearly harvest. After being harvested in early winter, the full crop is stored underground and slowly shipped out over the next three-quarters of the year. Once summer comes, you can see a noticeable drop in potato quality, and the potatoes often have to be sourced from places other than Idaho.

APPLES BY THE CRATE Apples is one fruit that Upstate Produce sources directly from the growers. Our Cortland and McIntosh apples grow mostly in New York State, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and all the way up in Canada. Apple varieties like Fuji, Honeycrisp and Gala grow in New York State and in Washington State. The premium stock comes from Washington, but we do sell both options. To get some background, Washington is the largest grower of apples in the country. They produce an astonishing 80 million crates of apples a year to New York State’s 20 million. While we do try to stock apples year round, those fruits, like potatoes, are in their prime only from around September until June. In the summer, we get our apples from Chile and New Zealand. There is definitely a difference in the taste of apples grown in the United States and otherwise, but when availability is scarce, we take what we can get. Fun fact: The Cortland apple is our bestselling variety!
WHATEVER THE WEATHER When the prices of produce fluctuate, it’s due to the ubiquitous balance of supply and demand. That, in turn, is dependent purely on the weather. When the weather plays along with the needs of the trees, there’s abundant produce, and growers and packers sell prime produce at great prices to please their customers and avoid falling to the wayside due to competition. But when the weather turns, this affects all fields across large swathes of earth, and suddenly, packers are only selling hundreds of what they’d normally be selling thousands. Not only is this fruit of poorer quality, but the low quantity means suppliers are packing whatever they can get their hands on. To consumers, this means that when there’s a higher demand and higher prices, chances are the stock is

of poorer quality — all part of the cycle that is natural produce.
FARM FRESH To deliver prime produce, every cog in the industry does its best to get their products to the shelves as fast and as fresh as possible. We do our part by storing our produce in refrigerated warehouses and using refrigerated trucks. Our trucks in numbers: We’ve got eight regular-sized trucks, two trailers and three small trucks.
STOCKED AND STOCKING We stock our customers’ shelves every day. Most produce get restocked daily, but some get replenished only every other day. The schedule of our incoming orders, as well, depends on the product. We get some produce on a daily basis, while others get delivered only a few times a week. Due to their tendency to easily get bruised, kirbies and zucchini need careful handling during transport.
GOOD TO KNOW Customers often insist on purchasing only Del Monte pineapples, avocados, grapes or whatever. However, it’s good to know that the Del Monte label — or any other fruit brand, for that matter — means almost nothing. There are plenty of growers who sell their fruits through Del Monte, and even when it’s Del Monte themselves who’s doing the growing, bear in mind that they have land all over the United States, and even beyond. This translates to a large variety of climates and means that every crate of fruit has a whole different story to tell. Similarly, some claim that it’s only GPOD potatoes that are good. But GPOD

is only the packer, and potato packers get their potatoes from so many different growers. This means, again, that every batch of potatoes has a history as individual as its consumer.
WAXING KNOWLEDGEABLE If you’re selecting the fruit from a large crate, chances are that it hasn’t been waxed.
THE FRUIT IS RIPER ON THE OTHER SIDE No, it isn’t your imagination telling you that your apple today was sweeter than its sister yesterday. Every individual fruit has its own journey, and whether it was or wasn’t on the side of the tree that received more direct sunlight, or less hail in a passing storm, makes all the difference. TEAM DISTRIBUTOR Even though there are multiple Jewish distributors, we all help each other out when there are certain products that are in low supply. There’s a Jewish-owned store, for instance, that I supply with certain produce. When a different product was in low supply, he was the one to get me in touch with his local grower and supplier, to everyone’s mutual benefit. Thank you, brother!

We
were on a rare family outing to a farm, picking the freshest fruits and veggies we’d ever tasted. After collecting a load of bounty, we sat under a tree to catch some shade and take a breather from the relentless sun that beat upon the open fields. I sat down on the thick grass and closed my eyes, moving only to lazily swat at the flies that buzzed nearby. There was something satisfying about connecting with family and nature at the same time, and a deep contentment spread through my tired limbs. I was happy to let the others sit and talk while I lounged off to the side. Their chatter swirled around me, and I listened with half an ear, drawing deep lungfuls of grassscented, sun-saturated air. Our trip was a multi-generational affair and included my aging grandmother. She sat perched on the edge of our wagon, which was already filled with the product of the last hour’s labor. Fat cucumbers and long zucchinis, shiny eggplants and buckets of tiny grape tomatoes, brightly colored peppers and sharp green jalapeno peppers… She surveyed our bounty and noted with a wistful sigh, “In Auschwitz vult men zich mechayeh gevehn.” A child of survivors, born in the DP camps, the everpresent hunger her parents faced was ingrained in her psyche. And as she is wont to say when she sees the abundance of food that we are blessed with today, those starving in the camps during the war might have lived had they had even just a little portion of it. But now, in the midst of reveling in the peaceful afternoon, far away from the grime and stench of the city, it was the last thing I wanted to hear. The mention of the camps punctured my happy mood; it was like lighting a memorial candle at a birthday celebration. I know that our ancestors went through Gehinnom; not a century ago, they were exterminated with the detachment of one stepping on a bug. I live with the knowledge, the fear, the repercussions and the weight of their unfinished dreams. But did she have to mention it now? Could we not enjoy an occasional outing in the present, only with the sounds of the little members of our clan frolicking in the grass? Loud, brash conversation in a foreign tongue startled me out of my thoughts. The very sound of the words and intonation gave me shivers, despite the heat. Instinctively, I straightened up and looked around to find its source. When I spotted them, they looked innocent enough. At the helm of a bursting wagon was the father, followed closely by his wife. Two little girls raced each other and collapsed, laughing, under our tree. A perfect little family unit, an idyllic scene. But coming on the heels of my grandmother’s comment, the picture they painted was colored in darker, more forbidding tones.
Polish. I recognized the language instantly. And that translated to one thing: an unfathomable horror of less than a century ago. The Germans started the extermination, but the country that they initially invaded willingly took over, murdering men, women and innocent children in cold blood. Cold-blooded murderers, who kicked a dead child’s doll out of her grasp, who ignored the pleas for mercy of a mother who clutched her baby to her chest; who gunned down thousands, millions, leaving just the ghosts of their potential. Polish, the language in which they bantered with their wives and cooed to their babies, just after washing their hands that dripped with the blood of the innocent. And I knew it: My Babby is right. We must never forget; we are duty-bound to remember. Yes, we thank Hashem that we have been allowed to rebuild. Our children’s eyes are bright and carefree. We are free to proclaim our faith openly, and we enjoy beautiful, productive lives. Truly, we have been blessed with plenty.
I live with the knowledge, the fear, the repercussions and the weight of their unfinished dreams. But did she have to mention it now? But the whisper of our recent past shows us the truth that lies beneath a facade of culture and freedom and equality. It urges us to see that despite all of our material goods, there are things that are more important: family, mitzvos, Torah, and a connection to Hashem. In the world we live in, the sky is blue, the air is calm. We share our world with others, who greet us with smiles while their hearts harbor an ageless hatred. At times we can catch a glimpse of it frothing and boiling, ready to spill over at the slightest provocation. “Kill the Jews!” That slur was not confined to my grandparents’ memoirs. The epithet was recently shouted at me as I walked in the street, leaving me shaken but not surprised. Now I got to my feet and urged everyone to move on to the apple orchard. We didn’t belong together with these people, not even under the canopy of the same tree. There was nothing we shared but a history of horror, and it taught us one thing very clearly: Only ours is the tree of life. January 12, 2022

Do
you know those Windex-wielding women? The ones who purposefully stride around the house with a bottle of Windex and a rag? Well, that was me. Minus the rag. Not because my house is immaculate (it’s not); not because my kids aren’t dirtproducers (they are); but because in the fruit-fly battles I’ve waged thus far, the only way I’ve emerged victorious is with those ammonia-containing sprays that leave the little critters gasping for air. Who would believe that this is coming from me, the one about whom they’d say, “She wouldn’t hurt a fly!” (To be honest, I think what I actually got was the bee comparison — “You produce honey, but boy do you sting” — but maybe someone, somewhere, did say those kind words about me.) But when those fly over my threshold, you bet I would hurt a fly, and I do. Especially since leaving them unscathed means instant proliferation. They reproduce like fish, like those ever-splitting bacteria that starred in our grade-school problem-solving assignments. The battle I now talk about commenced with one briefcase in which a water bottle spilled on an open bag of snackers. I was supposed to wash it, but it was erev yom tov, and I forgot about the mess sitting in the closet. I forgot all about it until I opened the coat closet one fine yom tov morning and was hit in the face by — oh no, fruit flies! And I could do nothing about it except take the briefcase out to the porch. Before I knew it, my home was overtaken by these little creatures that made eating or cooking a terrifying chore, with me on the lookout for black invaders. I had a stint with fruit flies a year back, so I already know what doesn’t work: Store-bought ready traps. DIY apple cider vinegar traps. Putting a slice of apple in a container covered with cling wrap with a few poked holes. Vacuuming them off the cabinets at the end of the day. (Don’t ask me how my neighbor manages it.) Fly zappers. Fruit flies are so tiny and elusive that they can fly right through without being electrocuted. Those ageless flypaper tape trap rolls hung from the ceiling (besides being 126

unsightly, they are very not appreciated by husbands who are six feet tall). I also know what does work. My mother blesses those adhesives placed on the window that trap them. But if they kill flies, I’m not so keen on having the fingers of little experimenters touch them. And with apologies to those various traps that do work, when flies are swarming all around, well, I can’t just wait for them to find their way to the trap or the tape or go to who knows where. That’s why I’m so attached to my Windex bottle. I don’t remember who introduced me to this powerful weapon that turned me into a mass fly murderer, but if she’s reading this, just know that you saved my sanity. And my walls full of streaks are proof of my new obsession, and proof that housekeeping is not my strong suit; the real way to do it is to walk around with the rag, too, and immediately erase your trail. So in case you’ve noticed a Windex shortage, it may have to do with the fact that I’m urging everyone to stock up on Windex and release it on those unsuspecting invaders. Or it may have to do with the pandemic. Which brings us right to the crux of the issue. Why is this world suddenly so full of fruit flies? At one point, the only time I had those nuisances in my home was when I left fruit out, which was rather characteristic; hence their name. But as of late, they’re there when every last bit of fruit is safely stored in the fridge. And while I might not run the most spankingclean home ever, it’s just not dirty enough to actually qualify as a home of flies. And I even found some upstairs! Near the vanities! In the playroom! Seems this has to do with the pandemic too. And I’m not kidding! Sources say that rotting piles of fruit — another issue the pandemic labor shortage has brought about — serve as perfect breeding ground for fruit flies, causing this outbreak that is affecting many housewives we know. You knew we’d end up blaming the pandemic, right? Now, for practical advice if you ever find yourself swarmed with these: Stock up on Windex and scout out your house at least once in the morning and once at night. Sometimes it takes two sprays to get the results you want. If you’re on top of them, you’ll have the invasion down to a few lone stragglers in just two days or so. But keep aiming for those innocentlooking singles, because they reproduce faster than I can get my Windex bottle from the laundry room. And pour some bleach down each of your drains; it’s often in those dark, wet environments that they keep on proliferating. But don’t do that while you execute the Windex extermination tip! Because if there’s one fact I still remember while the flies buzz around me it’s that one should never, ever mix ammonia and bleach.
You knew we’d end up blaming the pandemic, right?

ICE CREAM CONES Why use plates when you can use cones? These fruit cones are simply irresistible — a joy to create and eat! • Large ice cream cones • Cupcake liners (to prevent soggy cones) • Cantaloupe • Honeydew • Dragon fruit • Pomegranate • Cherries • Small fruits to fill the cone and add weight, such as grapes, apple pieces, and the like. It’s best to avoid using very juicy fruits, such as melons, at the bottom.

DIRECTIONS • Fill the bottoms of the cones with small fruit pieces until the cones feel weighted and stable. • Use a melon scoop to form melon balls. Use toothpicks to hold them in place. • Cupcake liners can help avoid soggy cones, but it’s still best to assemble the fruit cones shortly before eating.

Chany, mother of 3 As a mother of 8 with married children and einiklich KEH, I took this course to help my younger children. Even though this is not a discipline course, so many problems have disappeared as I put the mindset and game ideas into everyday life. GARDEN This fruit garden will make for a showstopping centerpiece on your Tu B’Shvat table! This may seem elaborate, but it’s easy for little hands to take part in shaping and arranging the melon pops. • Watermelon half • Cantaloupe • Honeydew • Pineapple • Kiwi • Cranberries • Grapes • Skewers • ½ watermelon • Dragon fruits • Popsicle sticks
DIRECTIONS • Cut the melons into slices that are approximately 1 inch thick, then use cookie cutters to create flowers. Slice kiwis for the leaves, and slide cranberries and grapes onto skewers.

GRAPHICS COURSE
• Scoop out approximately 1 to 2 inches of the watermelon, then fill the cavity with grapes and scooped dragon fruit.

• To make the popsicle sticks pliable enough to be used for the fence, soak them in hot water and bend them once they’re soft. Build the fence with hot glue only after arranging the garden, to prevent the fence from falling apart when setting up the fruit arrangement.

RAINY DAY This rainfall scene is fairly simple for children of any age to assemble, and reminds us to be thankful for the rain, without which our trees can’t grow! • Grapefruit or orange • Straw • Sunflower seeds • Grapes, halved • Sesame seeds (for eyes)

• Grape stem • Fresh checked herbs • Assorted dried fruit • Banana
DIRECTIONS • Slice the grapefruit or orange, and cut the straw to size. Cut and arrange all the fruit as seen in the picture. • I suggest slicing the banana last, to prevent it from browning too soon. (A bit of orange or lemon juice on the banana will keep it from browning.) Happy crafting!
DRIED FRUIT TREES A traditional Tu B’Shvat staple, dried fruits are often easier to work with in fruit art, as they retain their freshness and don’t discolor or wither the way fresh fruit does.

it's your mitzvah Earn your blessing Everyone knows that a married Jewish woman must cover her hair. But recent trends are making it obvious that many people don’t know one of the basic premises of the mitzvah: To lessen attraction. Sadly, many current wigs don’t meet this requirement. They attract attention – the opposite of what a head covering should do. Lace wigs, in particular, take this attraction to a new level. Dozens of Rabbonim from many communities have just issued a clear psak against the wigs. Their cry is unanimous. Lace front and top wigs are assur to wear or sell. The Rabbonim bless those who heed their call, with nachas & great bracha.
Heed Daas Torah. Earn your blessing. TM
."אוי לה לאותה בושה שבעולם העליון "זהו כדרך המשכילים שהתביישו ביהדותם והיו אומרים "היה יהודי באוהליך ואדם בצאתך “Woe to the humiliation in the Upper World. She and her husband will be very ashamed… [Wearing lace wigs] is like following the Maskilim who were ashamed of their Jewish appearance, and said, be a Jew in your home and a ‘regular’ person outdoors.” Harav Moshe Sternbuch, shlita”
As per the psak of the gedolim and rabbonim of Eretz Yisroel, Lakewood, Boro Park and beyond, it is assur to wear, manufacture or sell lace wigs.

Find the Fruit If you see a shrub or small tree filled with white flowers that have five petals each, it may just be a citrus tree. Citrus fruits have a thick, leathery rind, white pith and juicy pulp on the inside. Now take a sniff. Both the flowers and the fruit of the citrus tree have a delicious fragrance. Don’t forget to make a bracha!
The Citrus Family There are at least 50 different kinds of citrus fruits in the world. I know you’re thinking oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits — but how about pomelos, mandarins, clementines and esrogim? The world of citrus fruits is full of color and variety. Finger Fruit The fingered citron is the name of a strange-looking citrus fruit that looks like a hand with very misshapen fingers. This fruit grows in India and China, and unlike most citrus fruits, it doesn’t have juice. Its pith, however, is sweet and can be used as a flavoring.
A Fortune for Fruit For $80, you can buy a box of six small Dekopon citrus fruits, known to be the most expensive citrus fruit in the world. This hybrid citrus fruit is grown in Japan, and its claim to fame is that it is the most delicious citrus fruit in the world. But we know of another citrus fruit that can cost a lot more than the Dekopon citrus. Come Sukkos time, just one esrog easily beats that price! Frosty Fruit
When the winds start blowing, oranges and grapefruits hit the fruit stands. Most citrus fruits ripen in the months of December and May, bringing a splash of color to the winter months. But cold winter weather can be dangerous for the fruits, as it leeches out their moisture. Citrus fruit farmers have an innovative solution to protecting their fruits from frost. Before a cold spell, farmers water their orchards, spraying the trees with H20. The water freezes over the fruit, and the ice becomes an insulator, protecting the fruit inside. Oh, and the icy trees look beautiful, too, as if they’ve been frosted in glass. 148

A Citrus a Day Keeps the Doctor Away Did your mother ever tell you to eat an orange when you had a cold? Oranges and other citrus fruits have a considerable amount of vitamin C. In fact, just one orange has all the vitamin C you need in a day. They’re so full of the vitamin that sailors used to be given oranges before they set out on long sea voyages, to prevent diseases caused by vitamin C deficiency (such as scurvy). But citrus fruits have other health benefits as well, like fiber, flavonoids and potassium. So eat a citrus — to your health! Where the Citrus Grows Juicy News One of the most popular ways to enjoy citrus fruits is to juice them. Come Pesach time, many pull out electric juicers and buy crates of oranges and lemons to juice.
Most citrus fruits grow best in warmer climates, with lots of sunlight. When growing a citrus tree, it’s important to have at least five hours of direct sunlight on the plant. China is the world’s top producer of citrus fruits, accounting for more than a quarter of the world’s citrus fruit production. The remaining top producers are Brazil, India, Mexico and the United States; together, these countries account for almost 60% of worldwide citrus production.
Fruit Favorites The most popular citrus fruits are Jaffa oranges and Florida oranges. These are sweet, edible varieties of orange.
